- 0:25Speaker 2: Hello and welcome everyone to another edition of the Pro
- 0:28Football Report, presented by BCWSA, right here on fourteen nine
- 0:33E WBCB and one O seven to three FM, and
- 0:36also seen live at wbcbsports dot com. As the announcer
- 0:40said that SANDERD. Checker to my right, and two time
- 0:43Super Bowl champion Sean Landetta, how are you, my friend?
- 0:48Good to see it?
- 0:49Speaker 3: I'm good, Adam Andrew. Great to be here with you, guys,
- 0:51and great to.
- 0:51Speaker 2: Be with you. Thank all the Eagles fans for coming out.
- 0:53Speaker 3: Got off to a great start last Thursday night, and
- 0:58you know, no time to snooze. You know we're gonna
- 1:00get a repeat of the Super Bowl this Sunday. And
- 1:03you know, I'm surprised. I don't know how the TV
- 1:05deal works, but the whole country would want to see
- 1:08this game, all right, I have an answer for you.
- 1:10Speaker 2: So I was on the NFL media call. And by
- 1:12the way, I want to let everyone know we're here
- 1:13at Chicken Pizza Parks Cassino and we appreciate of them
- 1:16having us out here. So what happened is and this
- 1:19call was right after the schedules made, so it was
- 1:21in May. So the league and the partners don't care
- 1:25which week it is. They want great matchups every week.
- 1:28I'm with you, I wanted this in week fifteen. As
- 1:30a matter of fact, I'm like, why did the Eagles
- 1:32play Andrews? It weeks fourteen and sixteen or fifteen seventy Washington?
- 1:37Speaker 4: I think fourteen and six Okay, it's ridiculous it is,
- 1:40But they don't care.
- 1:41Speaker 2: They just want great matchups. Now. Obviously, as they told me,
- 1:46and I've asked this every year Sean and these media
- 1:49deals with the schedule makers, how much do you prognosticate
- 1:52how good a team is? They said, absolutely, that's part
- 1:54of it. We're not always going to be right. They
- 1:56wanted the Jets on national TV a lot last year.
- 1:58They started to be taking off of it because that's
- 2:00went very good. But on your point, I agree with you.
- 2:03I'd rather see this game late. I really didn't want
- 2:05to see the Cowboys in Week one. I didn't have
- 2:07a great feeling about them. Okay, that game was interesting.
- 2:10That was while we'll get into that Sean tonight. But
- 2:12I do want to ask you something before we get
- 2:14started here. Had you ever been in a game that
- 2:16had been delayed like that?
- 2:18Speaker 3: You know, it's interesting I didn't. All those years I played,
- 2:21you would have thinked it happened one time and never did.
- 2:23And my first thought is, I don't know what the
- 2:26rule was then, but I would think it would have
- 2:28had to have been different because at some point, you know,
- 2:31I played in a number of games with rain and
- 2:33this and that, and you would think lightning had to
- 2:35be somewhere in the area. But I never had one postponed,
- 2:40well not postponed, but delayed. But this has happened a
- 2:43number of times in the last five or ten years,
- 2:45and in the seventies, eighties, nineties, it like never happened.
- 2:49So I don't know if they came up with a
- 2:51new rule in the name of safety that if lightnings
- 2:53within thirty or fifty miles, we stopped the game. But
- 2:56all those years I played, it never happened once.
- 2:59Speaker 2: Never once, Sean, that's hard to believe. Yeah.
- 3:02Speaker 3: Wow, that's why I say, I wonder if they changed
- 3:05the rule on it, because there had to have been
- 3:08all those years, you know, a game where lightning wasn't
- 3:11far away, especially in all the rain games you know
- 3:13that I played in in the Northeast.
- 3:15Speaker 2: But interesting, so.
- 3:17Speaker 4: You could see how both offenses were impacted after that
- 3:20long delay. The defense has definitely benefited from that. Joe
- 3:24had fifteen minutes to get ramped up, and it seemed
- 3:25like there was a lack of intensity coming out of
- 3:28that break.
- 3:28Speaker 2: Yeah, there's no question.
- 3:29Speaker 3: I mean, you're in a full ladder, you're playing, you're rolling,
- 3:32and you know, guys are, guys are in, you know,
- 3:35you're you're in such a routine and you're just told
- 3:37to stop cold. And I think they said in real minutes,
- 3:41it was about an hour from the time they finished
- 3:44until they actually started to play again. And to have
- 3:46to pick up where you left off is a very
- 3:48difficult thing. I mean quite often in baseball, you'll see
- 3:51if there's a delay, even if the pitcher's rolling, they
- 3:54won't send them back out there because now you know
- 3:56he's cooled off for an hour and they don't want
- 3:58to throw him again after he was worn and again
- 4:02if you can remember the Super Bowl down in New
- 4:04Orleans about fifteen years ago where the lights went out
- 4:07and that whole game changed drastically after that, you know
- 4:09what I mean, it became a close game. So there's
- 4:12no doubt that it affects the guys. Everybody's different, but
- 4:15we saw it in that game.
- 4:17Speaker 2: Sean. When I saw you at training camp in August,
- 4:19it was interesting because Ken dunnock for Eagles tight end.
- 4:22I believe you played with with the Stars, correct, but
- 4:24you were also with the Stars when Vic Fangio was there.
- 4:26He must have been in his mid twenties. Did you
- 4:28say anything divicted to see? Yeah?
- 4:29Speaker 3: Absolutely, you know Vic was you know, he was kind
- 4:33of what they call today a quality control guy. He
- 4:35did a little bit of everything, and you know, he
- 4:38worked his way up. I mean, this is you know
- 4:41with the USFL, this is forty five years, thirty five, no,
- 4:47forty five years nineteen eighty three, three years there, plus
- 4:51the forty in the NFL.
- 4:52Speaker 2: Whatever.
- 4:52Speaker 3: But you know, he's had an amazing career and I
- 4:55had a chance to visit with him, and you know,
- 4:57it's just amazing that he's still in the league, and
- 5:00and that Philadelphia Stars team was amazing.
- 5:02Speaker 2: We had four.
- 5:04Speaker 3: Guys who became NFL head coaches. Four we had three
- 5:08guys in the front office who became NFL GMS, our
- 5:12equipment guy, our trainer, our film guy. I think eleven
- 5:15guys from that team went on to play in the NFL.
- 5:18And this is all from one USFL team. We had
- 5:21a terrific group in the front office, coaching staff, and players.
- 5:25And I was so grateful to play here. And I
- 5:27was telling you before the show started. A big reason
- 5:30why I was so thrilled to get back here in
- 5:31ninety nine when Andy came from Green Bay where I was,
- 5:35because I played here three years. Even though it was
- 5:36the USFL. I loved it here. The fans were great,
- 5:39we won a lot, and so grateful to come back
- 5:42here and play in Philly.
- 5:44Speaker 2: All right, Speaking of the Eagles, and Andrew brought up
- 5:46off the air Braidon Man, this guy Andrew and I
- 5:48would go to training camp. I'm like, I've not seen
- 5:50anything like this in a long time. What are your
- 5:51thoughts in Braidon Man? So far?
- 5:53Speaker 3: I think he's exceptional, you know, I mean, the punters
- 5:55every era, it seems like they get better and better
- 5:59and their technique are really great. You know, he's outstanding
- 6:03in college. I used to follow him because he was
- 6:06having games that, you know, your best stay in practice
- 6:10might not be as good as he was in the game.
- 6:11And he's just a guy where it all comes together,
- 6:14you know, his synchronization, his legs speed, his legs strength,
- 6:18you know, just outstanding. I remember that when the Jets
- 6:22drafted him, I thought he'd be there for a while,
- 6:24but you know, he was with the Jets, he went
- 6:26somewhere else. They kind of made a mistake in Pittsburgh.
- 6:30He kind of beat out the punter who was in
- 6:32Pittsburgh who had drafted, but.
- 6:34Speaker 2: They didn't keep him.
- 6:35Speaker 3: And that was good for the Eagles because he ends
- 6:37up being here and if he's healthy, he'll be here
- 6:39for a long time because I think he's terrific.
- 6:41Speaker 4: Now, having watched him as long as you have, Sean,
- 6:44have you noticed a difference in his approach at all?
- 6:46Speaker 3: Not really, you know, I mean, he seems to be
- 6:49doing everything the same that he was. But every year
- 6:52you do this, you get better because every year with
- 6:54practicing games might be another ten thousand punts you've hit
- 6:58and It's very similar to some who throws darts or bowls.
- 7:02You know, you do the same thing over and over.
- 7:04You get to a point where that muscle memory just
- 7:06gets ingrained, you know, and you just become consistent. And
- 7:11that's why so many punters play so long, because when
- 7:14you're thirty or thirty five, you're so much better than
- 7:17you were twenty five because you've done it so much longer.
- 7:19And it's the same thing over and over. Different from
- 7:23another position where you don't have to keep up your
- 7:25speed or your strength or somebody else may do that better.
- 7:28But Brayden is a terrific punter.
- 7:31Speaker 2: I mean, he is a I've always felt that a
- 7:33punter or a kicker, particularly a punter, because a field
- 7:35position is a field position game is a weapon. And Andrew,
- 7:40what I saw in training camp. I usually don't study
- 7:42punters as much, but I was like, he was good
- 7:46for the Eagles. But what I saw on training camp
- 7:48and this first game also just he looked incredible. Were
- 7:52your thoughts on him? Well?
- 7:53Speaker 4: He was lights out this summer and Nick Sirianni actually
- 7:56gave him and Jake Elliott a shout out in the
- 7:58locker room for their efforts and keeping the ball away
- 8:01from Cavante Turpin, who obviously is a lethal return specialist
- 8:04for the Cowboys. But what I've noticed from him, Adam
- 8:07is just time on task, attention to detail. Michael Clay today,
- 8:12the EGO Special Teams coordinator, mentioned that he's one of
- 8:14the hardest workers he's ever been around. So I think
- 8:16that that really speaks volumes and illustrates why he is
- 8:20why you're seeing this development right now.
- 8:22Speaker 2: Sean, you were here in Philly twice. Actually a lot
- 8:25of people just think once, but twice. John Harboll coach.
- 8:28Speaker 1: You.
- 8:28Speaker 3: Yeah, the five years I played here, he was my
- 8:30special team's coach.
- 8:31Speaker 2: I could have a coach with him.
- 8:33Speaker 3: He was everything you'd ask him for a coach if
- 8:35you were me, I mean, you always felt he was
- 8:37in your corner. Anything you needed that you felt you
- 8:40needed to do to be the best you could be
- 8:42game day. I always felt I had, whether it was
- 8:45studying film, practice, time, reps during practice, anything I needed.
- 8:50And just a great communicator.
- 8:52Speaker 2: You know.
- 8:53Speaker 3: He You know, he's one of those guys. If you
- 8:55open the dictionary to the word professional football coach, his
- 8:59pictures there because he just knows how to communicate with everybody.
- 9:02He's very intelligent. You know, every great coach will tell
- 9:06you that their players, you know, were why they win.
- 9:09But we also know coaching is so important, and you
- 9:12know it's no accident that he's this is seventeen or
- 9:15eighteen years.
- 9:16Speaker 2: I mean, how many.
- 9:17Speaker 3: Coaches in the history of pro football I've ever been
- 9:19with one team eighteen years? Was impossible, and every one
- 9:23of them basically winning seasons. Just a great, great coach,
- 9:27and I'm so glad the five years I played here
- 9:29he was my guy.
- 9:30Speaker 2: Who is the best special teams coach you've ever played for? Jeez?
- 9:33Speaker 3: I mean he would be as good as you know
- 9:36when you say best. I had some great ones. There
- 9:38was a guy named Wayne Severe. I don't know if
- 9:40remember Wayne. He had that silver hair. He's with the
- 9:43Redskins in the eighties and nineties. You'd always see him
- 9:45on the sidelines. He was just brilliant, so cerebral. John
- 9:50was outstanding. Mike Sweatman was a special teams coach for
- 9:54years in the league, and my first one, My first
- 9:58one was great. He went on to be a coordinator
- 10:01and a three time head coach. A guy named Romeo Crenelle. Yeah,
- 10:07we all refer to Romeo as Rack because those are
- 10:10his initials, aid you know, and uh, you know, he
- 10:14actually lives in New York City. We still get together.
- 10:16I think he's a great guy. Yeah, I think maybe
- 10:19Carol ties him this year. But with Houston, I didn't
- 10:21know he was the oldest head coach in NFL history.
- 10:24I think he was seventy three or seventy four. He
- 10:26was only there one year, but but he was that.
- 10:28But to be a young player and have a coach
- 10:31like him, again, that was just in your corner and
- 10:34let you be as good as you can be. Always
- 10:36grateful to that because, uh, you know a lot of
- 10:39times that can affect your play.
- 10:40Speaker 4: Now, Sean, getting back to John Harball for one moment
- 10:43in your view, was there a moment that in that
- 10:46signaled to you that he would eventually go on to
- 10:48be a head coach.
- 10:49Speaker 3: There wasn't a moment, but there was no question just
- 10:54his leadership ability and the main reason I think more
- 11:00teams coaches should be coaches because no other coach on
- 11:03a team deals with more players on a daily basis.
- 11:06I mean every morning at eight am, we'd have our
- 11:08special teams meeting, and except for the starting quarterback or backup,
- 11:13everybody's in there, because even your star linebacker might be
- 11:16the second or third backup on field goal protection. So
- 11:19he watches every player every day. He knows all their
- 11:22skills and straints, and you know that's just great knowledge
- 11:25for a coach to have. You know, he's just not
- 11:28coaching the receivers or the linebackers. He's coaching everybody every day. Yeah,
- 11:34you know, you don't know that he's going to go
- 11:35on to do what he did, but I certainly felt
- 11:38he would be a head coach at some point.
- 11:40Speaker 2: When you're three time a two time All Pro actually
- 11:42it was seven.
- 11:43Speaker 3: Oh, there's three times first team All NFL, because that's different.
- 11:49You know, people don't realize first team All NFL that
- 11:51is so tough to get. There are guys in the
- 11:54Hall of Fame who were not first team All NFL once.
- 11:58Speaker 2: Wow.
- 11:58Speaker 3: Think about that statement. Wow, John John Elway was a
- 12:02great quarterback. You know many times he was all time
- 12:04first team All NFL zero. Yep, I think Harry Carson
- 12:09was in the NFL Hall of Fame.
- 12:10Speaker 2: Yeah, first teams zero.
- 12:13Speaker 3: I mean, because it's it's one of eleven you know,
- 12:15and as a court I think Tom Brady three, you know,
- 12:20because there's only one per position per year and that's really.
- 12:24Speaker 2: Hard to get.
- 12:25Speaker 3: But the all pro teams, you know, there's so many
- 12:27different ones, you know, AP and unfortunately through the years
- 12:32I was able to get some.
- 12:33Speaker 2: But the three time is the first team. So here's
- 12:38a question for you before we move on. And we
- 12:40went to talk about the Dallas game. Then we'll get
- 12:41to Kansas City later. When you have a game like this,
- 12:45when you have a game like week one, and you
- 12:47and I were talking off the air about Week one
- 12:49was interesting because there were a lot of interesting games.
- 12:51If you lose Week one, you do you simply walk? Hey,
- 12:55hey it's only week one. We got sixteen games. Ever
- 12:57back when you were playing fifteen more games, you had
- 12:59sixteen games. Or if it's really tight, is there a
- 13:02hangover it? Because what kind of rules did you have?
- 13:04You have the twenty four hour role? How do you
- 13:06get over a game?
- 13:06Speaker 3: Well, everybody handles it different, you know, I mean, things
- 13:09will stay with you because you know, the worst part
- 13:12is almost every game we talked about earlier, how so
- 13:15many games are a one score game? Right, so you
- 13:18lost if you lost that game. There was a pretty
- 13:20good chance it was just a couple of plays. Then
- 13:23the next day you go in and you watch the
- 13:24film and you'll see five or six things that the
- 13:27fans didn't see that you're saying to yourself, are you
- 13:30kidding me? That little thing? That little thing is really
- 13:33why we didn't win. But at that moment, you didn't
- 13:36make the play and they did. But you know, that's
- 13:39it's tough to get over. But you have to get
- 13:41over it because seven days later you got to line
- 13:44up and play again. And most of the guys are
- 13:47pretty good at it. And that's a big thing for
- 13:49the coaches too. You know, it's big for the coaches
- 13:51to look at a tape correct the mistakes. You know,
- 13:54not be happy about it, but you know what, that's gone.
- 13:57We got to get ready for next Sunday's game. And
- 13:59for the most part, I think the majority of guys
- 14:02do a great.
- 14:03Speaker 2: Job of that. I really do. All right, guys, hold
- 14:05those thoughts. When we come back after this break, we're
- 14:07gonna talk Cowboys Eagles later on Eagles Chiefs. You're listening

- 18:32and Andrew u Cheko from Inside the Birds. And not
- 18:35only is shorn Landetta a great punter any two time
- 18:38Super Bowl champion, but he also won two championships with
- 18:41the Philadelphia Stars.
- 18:43Speaker 3: No, absolutely, we had such a great team. We talked
- 18:46about it before. Yeah, you think of all those great
- 18:49players we had on one USFL team, we should have.
- 18:51Speaker 2: Won three ERVII eatman, we lost ourself. We lost the
- 18:53other one by a point. I think.
- 18:56Speaker 3: Yeah, we just had a terrific group of guys. And
- 18:59you know, I was so lucky to play on that
- 19:02team here with that front office, coaches and players, and
- 19:04in this city because they supported us so well. You know,
- 19:08the first year we had about twenty thousand. Second year
- 19:11we had like in the thirties. Then unfortunately, there was
- 19:13a problem with the lease with the stadium. So we
- 19:16did something that was kind of crazy. We lived and
- 19:19practiced in Philadelphia and basically we traveled four hours each
- 19:24way to our home games as the Baltimore Stars playing
- 19:29ten miles from Washington, DC. Wow, I mean think about that.
- 19:32Would never be lived here and practiced here, you know,
- 19:37and drove four hours each way to our home games.
- 19:41Our opponents would fly home quicker than we drove home
- 19:44from our home games. I've never heard of the thing, like, yeah, yeah,
- 19:48I mean it's such a shame because the first two
- 19:50years we had such a following year and did so well,
- 19:52but there was a problem with the lease at the
- 19:54VET and you know that that just didn't work after that.
- 19:58Speaker 2: All guys, So let's before we get into our our
- 20:00injury review brought to you by the attorneys of Begley,
- 20:03Carlin and Mandio. Guys, I want to talk about the
- 20:07Eagles game last week against Dallas. Again, we talked about
- 20:09the delay, which was wild, but look, they won the game,
- 20:12right Andrew, They won the game, but there's some issues
- 20:15I think with with football team, particularly on defense.
- 20:17Speaker 4: What are your thoughts, Yeah, particularly in terms of edge depth.
- 20:21That was something that we looked at you and I
- 20:22talked to ad Nausea about this.
- 20:24Speaker 2: Adam.
- 20:24Speaker 4: Throughout the summer, you have two younger players who they're
- 20:27banking on, but then behind that they weren't getting a
- 20:29lot out of Azizo Julari. This summer, josh Usha had
- 20:32flashes and you know, offered signs of encouragement. But obviously
- 20:37they sign Zadarius Smith for a reason. But I think
- 20:40in the back end as well, Drew mccooba started pic
- 20:44Vanjo today said that he had a couple of major
- 20:46coverage bus which is what he said, and cornerback two
- 20:50adri Jackson gets the nod and struggle, especially in that
- 20:54first half. So defensively, it seemed like they were ruining
- 20:56a little bit. And that's something that I think the
- 20:59more that they play, the more that they'll start to
- 21:01settle in and establish that chemistry.
- 21:04Speaker 3: Well interesting, you know, anytime I watch a game, you
- 21:07know it's gonna be tight because these are all professionals
- 21:10out here, and you know a lot of times each
- 21:12team might have a little better strength at a certain
- 21:14position than another. And when I looked at the game,
- 21:17I'm like, you know, the Cowboys have a good quarterback,
- 21:21they have a pretty good tight end, and they have
- 21:22a couple tremendous receivers. And with all the guys the
- 21:27Eagles lost on defense and especially in the defensive backfield.
- 21:31You know, I really said to myself, if I'm Dallas,
- 21:34I am gonna throw to these two wide receivers as
- 21:37much as I can and make these you know, younger
- 21:41defensive backs from Philly prove they can cover them. I mean,
- 21:44hindsight's twenty twenty. I don't know if ever in the
- 21:47NFL in history has an All Star NFL receiver dropped
- 21:52four passes in one game. He's probably never done it
- 21:55before or never will do it again. But I mean
- 21:58those receivers will getting open. They were down there, and
- 22:02I think they were the main reasons that kept the
- 22:04Cowboys in the game. You know, they played very well,
- 22:06and you know, we forget before Prescott got hurt. This
- 22:10team won twelve games three years in a row, and
- 22:13because last year was a bad year, because they didn't
- 22:15have their people, a lot of people like, wow, they
- 22:17played better when we thought, well, you forget before last year.
- 22:21That's the kind of team they were. They played every week.
- 22:23You know, you don't win twelve games three years in
- 22:25a row if you're just okay. But the Eagles kind
- 22:28of survived that. It's crazy to think none of us
- 22:30would have thought that before the game. But we'll never know.
- 22:32But if he makes a couple of those catches, that
- 22:34may be an overtime game.
- 22:35Speaker 2: And you know, it was tough. It was tough, so Andrew,
- 22:39when you look at let's we'll get to the injuries
- 22:42in a second, you look at that game and you feel, Okay,
- 22:44they survived. What were your thoughts of the team coming
- 22:47in the season. What do you how do you project
- 22:49Eagles this season?
- 22:50Speaker 4: I had them at about eleven wins and one thing
- 22:53that really struck me is that from players won through
- 22:57whatever seventy throughout training camp, whoever you spoke to, no
- 23:00one was sort of living in the past. They were
- 23:02focused on the here and now, on the season ahead,
- 23:05and they came in focused. But obviously things start to
- 23:09change six seconds into the game when you lose your
- 23:11fullback Ben van Sumern for the season, and then of
- 23:15course the Jay when Carter you know, incident there and
- 23:18that's where.
- 23:19Speaker 10: But I don't view that as a lack of focus.
- 23:21Speaker 4: I believe that they were locked in going into it,
- 23:23but things started could have snowballed from there.
- 23:26Speaker 2: Do you believe in the hangover from winning a Super Bowl?
- 23:29Speaker 3: Well, you know, it's interesting that they use that term,
- 23:32and I would say that it is true. Just based
- 23:36on history. There are so many teams the year after
- 23:40a Super Bowl don't play as well as they did.
- 23:43I think there's a reason for that. You know, of
- 23:45the thirty two teams, maybe twenty two were finished around
- 23:49New Year's The Super Bowl team is playing through the
- 23:52first second week of February. That's another six weeks. Not
- 23:56only are they playing, they're playing tough games. You know,
- 23:59after they played eighteen twenty weeks with training camp. That's
- 24:03an exhausting year, and especially if you're a team that's
- 24:06done it two to three times in a row where
- 24:07you've gotten to the playoffs and in the super Bowl.
- 24:09But you know, the two super Bowl teams I was on,
- 24:13you know, we felt great going in the next year,
- 24:15and this was before free agency, so we kind of
- 24:17stayed together. We had losing seasons both times, and I
- 24:22think part of the reason is it's just human nape nature,
- 24:27even subconsciously. When you're playing at defending super Bowl champs,
- 24:31you get ready for every game because every way is important,
- 24:34but maybe you just turn it up another notch. You know,
- 24:37it's not like, well, I'm not gonna play hard this week.
- 24:39You play hard every week, but when you're playing in
- 24:41defending super Bowl champs, you might not even realize it,
- 24:44but you just might play a little bit better. And plus,
- 24:48look at all those players. They lost most of the times.
- 24:53I mean, you're talking half your starters on a Super
- 24:56Bowl and that happens to every Super Bowl. The reason
- 25:00you want is because your guys played great and you
- 25:02can't keep them all because of the cap.
- 25:04Speaker 2: Could you tell that in training camp? Oh boy? You know,
- 25:07I don't know, are we that good? Like, could you
- 25:09tell them training cap I couldn't.
- 25:11Speaker 3: I couldn't because all the regulars, the guys that were
- 25:13there before, you're watching them playing to you, they looked
- 25:16the same as they did last year. And you know, again,
- 25:19you know it's it's the players you lose, the new
- 25:22guys replacing them. You know they're going to replace them
- 25:25at the same level. You don't know that until the
- 25:26season starts, and then that other thing that you know
- 25:29it's subconscious. You know you're gonna play your best every game,
- 25:32but when you play the defending champs, you might just
- 25:35play a little harder, even if you don't realize it,
- 25:37you know.
- 25:38Speaker 2: All right, guys, it's time for this week's injury review,
- 25:41brought to you by the attorneys at Begley, Carlin and Mandio.
- 25:45Contact them today for a free consultation. At two one five,
- 25:48it was six three six eight nine. That's two one five.
- 25:51It was six three, six eight nine. So, first of all, Andrew, yes,
- 25:56this is entry segment, but it's also a transactional segment
- 25:58because again Howie Roseman churning the roster. So Will Shipley
- 26:04has this rib injury it's clearly a concern, so they
- 26:07make the trade for Tank Bigsby. I'll he turned the
- 26:10practice squad, So let's go over to the transactions. Then
- 26:12we'll get into the injuries. But we just talked about
- 26:14will Shipley's ribageery. Go ahead, Andrew, what do you think
- 26:15of these transactions today?
- 26:17Speaker 10: Yeah?
- 26:17Speaker 4: Well today they wave Gabe Hall, the Eagles defensive lineman
- 26:22second year, had a really good training camp. I thought
- 26:24that he had a lot of juice day in and
- 26:26day out, six foot six and planning position on the
- 26:28defensive line. They made room for running back Tank Bigsby,
- 26:32who I thought was a really interesting addition because I
- 26:34liked him coming out of Auburn. Had seven hundred and
- 26:37sixty six rushing yards last season for the Jags and
- 26:40had five carries on Sunday, So it didn't seem like
- 26:43he was much of a factor into their immediate plans.
- 26:45They had a running back who they drafted in the
- 26:47fourth round.
- 26:48Speaker 10: He ends up in.
- 26:49Speaker 4: Philadelphia, has really good contact balance, he has a compact build.
- 26:54The Eagles are going to give him a long look
- 26:55as a kick returner, but you don't give up that
- 26:57kind of compensation purely for kick returner, so they obviously
- 27:01like that for you know, he has still has two
- 27:04years left on his rookie contract, and you can look
- 27:07at the running back backfield for next season Saquon Barkley,
- 27:09Will Shipley, and Tank Bigsby. I think he's going to
- 27:12have a fact that he's going to be a factor
- 27:14here in the next couple of weeks once he gets
- 27:15fully on board in the offense.
- 27:17Speaker 2: Or the other injury and this is been you know,
- 27:18it's a significant situation and we'll see if he's able
- 27:21to play. But Landon Dickerson again with the back. First
- 27:24of all, Sean as a as an athlete, you punted
- 27:30bad back. How do you play with a bad back?
- 27:32Speaker 3: You know, it's almost impossible. I missed a lot of
- 27:35the nineteen eighty eight season with L four and L
- 27:38five Hernias. Oh and ninety percent of people have had
- 27:41bad back problems, and we all know how excruciating and
- 27:44debilitating him be. And you know a lot of times
- 27:47you're going to take an injection to play to kill
- 27:49the pain. But you know, you can only do what
- 27:52you can do. And again, you think of a guy
- 27:54three hundred and thirty pounds, you know that's got to be,
- 27:57you know, bench pressing another person and everything. You can
- 28:00only do so much and so many times it's just
- 28:03there's not enough time for it to heal.
- 28:05Speaker 2: You know.
- 28:06Speaker 3: Obviously there's six seven days before each game. Some of
- 28:09these things probably take six seven weeks, but you don't
- 28:11have that, you know, so you constantly have to just
- 28:14get it better and then play. And you know, I
- 28:17just hope it's not significant, but it could be, because
- 28:20you know, a bad back is just impossible, well just
- 28:23totally incapacitate you.
- 28:25Speaker 4: Yeah, so it was like labor day. We're out there
- 28:26on the practice field. We don't see Landon Dickerson shows
- 28:29up on the injury report. It wasn't the knee, it
- 28:31was the back. And then a few days later, to
- 28:33your point, he was battling through it and clearly he
- 28:36was laboring throughout the game.
- 28:38Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 28:38Speaker 3: I mean, again, everybody's had a bad back, and you know,
- 28:42it's an awful thing. And then when you think about
- 28:44what an offensive lineman has to do, you know, to
- 28:46deal with that, it's extremely difficult. Any position, you know,
- 28:49it's hard to play if you have that injury.
- 28:52Speaker 2: Hunting, so, what were your typical injuries? Calf knee echo.
- 28:56What were your typical injuries?
- 28:57Speaker 3: You know, most guys will have injuries with pull and strains.
- 29:01Every single punter has a bad back problem because your
- 29:04left foot is planted on the ground or your right
- 29:07foot whatever as you swing up through, so the pull
- 29:11the tension on your lower back is tremendous. Now, obviously
- 29:15you stretch and you build those muscles through thousands of kicks,
- 29:18but every single punter's had a bad back, And most
- 29:23punters down the road will get a hip replacement on
- 29:27their plant leg because they put all their weight on
- 29:31that leg. They stick it real hard in the ground
- 29:34and then you stay there as you swing through.
- 29:37Speaker 2: You know.
- 29:37Speaker 3: So if you think of the tens of thousands of
- 29:39times that you plant real hard into the ground, you know,
- 29:43and your hips absorbing that, you know, those are mostly
- 29:47the common injuries you know for punters.
- 29:49Speaker 2: That punters, what they go through, it's interesting watching them.
- 29:54I go to camp to camp to camp. I'm thinking
- 29:57all the camp shown that I've been to. Shane Leckler,
- 30:00it's probably one of the best punters ever saw. Formally amazing.
- 30:02It's amazing the Raiders and going to Raiders camp and
- 30:05napo's something and our body experienced because it never rained
- 30:08for fifteen years. I went there, never rained one day,
- 30:10Andrew never rained one day. NAPA. When I went out,
- 30:13they're in the back to the NAPA, Mariott Schean. Yeah,
- 30:16you know, it's unbelievable.
- 30:17Speaker 3: Back in the day, we try to tell these guys,
- 30:18we used to stay in these little, you know, dorms,
- 30:22you know, cinder block room dorms, you know, with the
- 30:25one single bed that was like barely six feet long.
- 30:28Speaker 2: And today they go back, you know, to a.
- 30:30Speaker 3: Beautiful room, king sized bed, air conditioning, color TV. And
- 30:34good for them, everything's gotten better. But you know, back
- 30:37in the day, it wasn't quite as easy.
- 30:39Speaker 2: All right. So after this quick break, we're gonna talk Eagles.
- 30:42Chiefs will preview it. They got some injury concerns Andrew
- 30:46in fact that they they and they had a tough
- 30:48loss against the Chargers. The Chiefs guys have owned the
- 30:51Chargers since any Reid got there, but not this time.
- 30:53The Chargers got them. So we'll talk a little bit

- 35:31chicking peats at parks casino here in Ben Salem. So, guys,
- 35:34let's turn the page. Right. In the NFL, they always
- 35:37got to turn the page for the next week. He
- 35:39goles to play at the Chiefs on Sunday and this,
- 35:43you know, people, we were saying earlier, we would have
- 35:45loved this game to be later in the season, but
- 35:47it is. What is It's week two. It's not even
- 35:49into a Sunday night game. Does that surprise you?
- 35:51Speaker 10: Yes, it loses it's luster a little bit.
- 35:54Speaker 4: Sunday four, twenty five, Week two, a rematch of Super
- 35:56Bowl fifty nine. Yeah, that was one that was a
- 35:59little bit of a head scratcher when the schedule came out.
- 36:01Speaker 2: So with the injuries here, we do want to add
- 36:04this guys, xavier' worthy, who's their best D threat. He's
- 36:07got a bad shoulder. Andy Reid now is kind of
- 36:10there have been some reports out there. He didn't say
- 36:12they were wrong, but they think he's day to day. Sean,
- 36:14what is day to day mean to you?
- 36:15Speaker 3: Well, it's what it means. I mean, it's literally day
- 36:18to day. It's amazing how well you can get every
- 36:23twenty four hours. You know, I don't know how many
- 36:26players and especially me where on Wednesday, I'm like, there's
- 36:31no way I can kick Sunday because of the helmet
- 36:34I took to the knee or something, and everything's different colors.
- 36:38Speaker 2: But these trainers are so good that by Thursday, you
- 36:41know what, I'm a lot better.
- 36:43Speaker 3: I still can't kick. Friday, I'm a lot better. I
- 36:47can kick a little. Saturday You're like, Wow, it's just
- 36:50amazing how much better you can get in those four days.
- 36:53And again, these trainers are terrific. You know, it's from
- 36:56six in the morning till nine at night every day,
- 36:59and you just he's got to wait and see how
- 37:00guy plays. And so many times it's determined nine thirty
- 37:04in the morning, they go out on the field and
- 37:05they'll run a guy and they might not know till
- 37:07right then if he's active or not.
- 37:08Speaker 2: All right. Since you brought up trainers, did you work
- 37:11with the Giants when they're with the legendary Ronnie Barnes,
- 37:14You know I did.
- 37:15Speaker 3: Ronnie was my guy there for most of the ten
- 37:17years that I played there, and he's still there. He's unbelievable.
- 37:21Ronnie was a great trainer. He always felt again, you know,
- 37:24he was in my corner or anything. I needed, and
- 37:27he really helped me in my career and I'm always
- 37:29appreciative for that. The Eagles had of an excellent trainer
- 37:31too when I was here, Rick Burkeholder.
- 37:33Speaker 2: You know, Andy took him with him to Kansas City.
- 37:37Speaker 3: But the trainers through the years, you know, I've always
- 37:40said three of the most important people in every player's
- 37:43career that most don't even realize is the trainer, your
- 37:48strength coach, and the equipment man. Those three guys, you know,
- 37:53and what they can do to help you do your
- 37:55skill can mean so much, and a lot of times
- 37:58guys don't realize it. But I had great ones all
- 38:02from my career and there's no doubt in their ways
- 38:05they helped.
- 38:05Speaker 2: Me to be the best I could be. Sean, let
- 38:08me ask a question off of that, what did you
- 38:11do to get yourself right physically for a game? A
- 38:14lot of stretching core, actually, what would you do to
- 38:17get ready? Yeah?
- 38:18Speaker 3: You would, I mean, you know, the whole thing. It's
- 38:20like the tool you do your job with. It's not
- 38:23only your body, but basically your legs, you know, so
- 38:25obviously you don't want to.
- 38:27Speaker 2: Have any soreness.
- 38:28Speaker 3: So a lot of cold, tub hot tubs, stretching, you know,
- 38:32get you know, massage on your thighs, on your calves, because.
- 38:35Speaker 2: You want to be loose.
- 38:36Speaker 3: You want to kick a lot of balls, but not
- 38:38too many balls because you know, Sunday afternoon you want
- 38:40to feel so fresh. And it's interesting all the things
- 38:43that you do just for those four or five six
- 38:46punts you're going to have. Sometimes it's only two or three,
- 38:49but you know, everyone's expected to be good, but you know,
- 38:52you find a routine and everybody's different. I always felt
- 38:55I wanted to kick a lot of footballs. You know,
- 38:58other guys didn't kick as much, but you did what
- 39:00worked for you. But the whole idea is Sunday when
- 39:03you go out there for your legs to feel fresh,
- 39:06because you started back in March and April to get
- 39:08ready for minicamp, then training him, then the season and
- 39:11in November and December, you can't be sore, and some
- 39:14guys get sore.
- 39:15Speaker 2: But I was just very fortunate that that didn't happen.
- 39:18All right, guys, it's time now for this week's Penworth
- 39:21Financial Key to the Game. The key to your financial
- 39:25future is Penworth Financial. Call him today at two six
- 39:28seven nine nine to seven, four, five oh three or
- 39:31visit Penworth dot com. All right, so Andrew, I'm gonna
- 39:33go to you first. Do you us play Kansas City?
- 39:36Speaker 5: Right?
- 39:37Speaker 2: Yep? And they they? If I'm not mistaken. Did they
- 39:40win on like a Monday night or Sunday night like
- 39:42three day? Did?
- 39:42Speaker 10: It was a sloppy game?
- 39:43Speaker 4: I remember Marquez Valdez Gantling dropped the pass at the end.
- 39:46Speaker 2: Yeah, okay, so they've won there. They just beat them.
- 39:49But could you see first of all it and we'll
- 39:51get Sean's thoughts. I went from thinking there's no way
- 39:54they're going to to to oh and two. But I'm thinking,
- 39:58I don't think this Chiefs game as good as Chiefs
- 40:00team as good as I thought your thoughts.
- 40:02Speaker 4: It's not especially offensively and you can make a case
- 40:05for going into this game one one that they're gonna
- 40:07really want this game.
- 40:08Speaker 10: They're going to be juiced for it. But so will
- 40:10the Philadelphia Eagles.
- 40:11Speaker 4: They know that that wasn't their best effort Thursday night
- 40:13in the opener, But I think for me, the key
- 40:15is too and they're going to benefit greatly from potentially
- 40:19obviously the return of Jalen Carter providing pressure against Patrick Mahomes,
- 40:24but also not making the same mistake that the Dallas
- 40:26Cowboys made, and that was getting too wide in their
- 40:29rush lanes and things like that. You have to be
- 40:30able to contain them because he'll make you pay for it.
- 40:34And then establishing the running game with Saquon Barkley. I
- 40:36didn't think that they were as efficient running the football
- 40:39in the opener as they've proven to be with that
- 40:41offensive line.
- 40:42Speaker 3: Sean, you know interesting that the Chiefs. I agree they're
- 40:46not the team they were. I still think they're very good.
- 40:49I still think there'll be a playoff team. You know
- 40:50that AFC is so deep. You know, only one team
- 40:54can go from each conference. So if you think about it,
- 40:56in the AFC, there's a couple of terrific teams and
- 41:00will not get to the super Bowl because only one
- 41:02can go. And we saw a couple of the other
- 41:04night who were amazing. But uh, you know, it's going
- 41:06to be interesting. I mentioned to you before that I
- 41:08thought Dallas could have success, which they did with their
- 41:12two great receivers and good quarterback against the defensive backs
- 41:15of the Eagles. It's almost a little different now. I mean,
- 41:18Mahomes is still Mahomes. He's terrific, But will his receivers.
- 41:22Will he watched the film? Will he say we can
- 41:25make Ky the way Dallas did, you know, throwing the ball,
- 41:28because he's still a great quarterback, But obviously I don't
- 41:31know if he has everything around him that he did.
- 41:34And we talked before about San Diego was clearly the
- 41:36better team the other night. So interesting to see if
- 41:39they try to attack the Eagles defensively the way Dallas did.
- 41:42Speaker 2: All right, let me take what you just said and
- 41:44take it a step further. So I go back to
- 41:45the super Bowl. Okay, they spacks, you spending able to
- 41:48put in a new front to stop Barkley. He did.
- 41:51Speaker 10: What do they do?
- 41:51Speaker 2: They won vertical? They should have gone vertical. Andrew against
- 41:55the Cowboys one shot and by the way they nailed it.
- 41:58They nailed it. Okay, that was a great throw by her.
- 42:00It's great protection and a great catch by Johann Dottin.
- 42:03So to me, Andrew, they've got it. They got to
- 42:05throw the ball deep go after well, they have to
- 42:06open things up at him.
- 42:08Speaker 4: You hear the word evolve dating back to the spring,
- 42:10and when you hear that, it's it really suggests that
- 42:14the passing game is what needs to evolve, and frankly
- 42:16it does. Because you can't lean on Saquon Barkley game
- 42:19in and game out, teams are going to look to
- 42:21try to sell out.
- 42:22Speaker 10: You saw what Dallas did crowding the box.
- 42:25Speaker 4: The Eagles need to take advantage of their downfield weapons
- 42:27with aj Brown, DeVante Smith, and you saw Johann Dotson
- 42:30with the fifty one yard reception that you were talking about.
- 42:33Speaker 2: Sean, I got to ask you this question because you're
- 42:34wearing an Eagles hat. Nice hat by New Era. Thanks.
- 42:37I've been with a bunch of teams, though, Okay, who
- 42:39do you root for? Do you root for anyone?
- 42:40Speaker 3: You know a lot of people ask me that, And
- 42:42I really loved all the teams I played for. I
- 42:44had great experiences there, you know. Obviously the most years
- 42:48I played was with the Giants. Was lucky to win
- 42:50twice there, so certainly I'd like them to do well.
- 42:52They treated me well.
- 42:53Speaker 2: The years I was here.
- 42:56Speaker 3: Might have been my favorite in the sense that it
- 42:58was at the end of my career, and I really
- 43:00appreciated we got it turned around, and you know, I
- 43:04live here now. I split my time between here and
- 43:06New York. But you know, I root for the teams
- 43:09that I played for. But more than that, I tell people,
- 43:12when you're a player, it's interesting you root for people
- 43:15because so many guys I played with. I have former
- 43:17teammates that are head coaches, gms, and you know, if
- 43:20we're all teammates on the Phillies of Phillies on the Eagles,
- 43:24you know, and you go to the Vikings, well, you're
- 43:26my friend. I want the Vikings to do good, right,
- 43:28you know, and you're down with New Orleans, I want
- 43:32you to do good, you know, because every Sunday I'll
- 43:34watch a game and I'll see former teammates this that,
- 43:36and they all can't win, you know, but I want
- 43:39them to do.
- 43:40Speaker 2: Good because they're my teammates and my friends. So it's
- 43:42very interesting.
- 43:43Speaker 3: As a player, you kind of root more for people
- 43:46because they moved around the league. But you know, for
- 43:49the most part, most of my years, you know, twenty
- 43:52of my years with the Giants, Rams, and Eagles. I
- 43:55wish the Giants and Eagles weren't in the same division.
- 43:58If it was the Jets and Eagles, that'd be a
- 43:59lot easier for me because twice a year.
- 44:01Speaker 2: I'm in a little situation.
- 44:02Speaker 3: I don't want anyone to lose, but that can't happen,
- 44:05so I root for everyone.
- 44:06Speaker 2: All right, good thoughts, Sean, I appreciate that. Yeah, it
- 44:10for Andrew and I who are reporters. You know what,
- 44:12I don't know about you, Andrew. I can't root for anyone.
- 44:14But although it's good for inside the birds by the way,
- 44:17if Eagles win, I'm just telling you not that we root,
- 44:20but I root for people as Sean does, because I
- 44:23have a lot of friends of our coaches and I
- 44:25have to be impartial, but I'm secretly pulling for them
- 44:27to win. And it's weird because you know, you get
- 44:30to know these people's human beings and you're trying to
- 44:32get information from them. It's like, we can't root for them.
- 44:35How do you deal with as a reporter? How do
- 44:36you deal with it?
- 44:37Speaker 4: Well, you have to strike a delicate balance. But look,
- 44:41being a reporter, it may desensitize you, but it does
- 44:43not dehumanize you. And you're able to really build relationships
- 44:47and get to know players and coaches and things like that.
- 44:50So you always take that into consideration. I mean, you're
- 44:53human and you're lying if you say you're not, because
- 44:56of course that's just the reality of it.
- 44:58Speaker 2: Oh, guys, hold those thoughts. When we come back, we're
- 45:01gonna talk with Sean about more about his career. We're
- 45:03gonna talk a little bit more Eagles, Chiefs, and a
- 45:05couple other subjects. You are listened to the Pro Football

- 48:48Speaker 2: All right, everyone, welcome back to Pro Football Report presented
- 48:52by BCWSA right here on fourteen ninety WBCB and one
- 48:56of seven point three FM and also seen live at
- 48:59WBCB sports dot Com. I'm Kathlin and anderw Checo and
- 49:03two times Super Bowl Champion and also two time the
- 49:06Real USFL as a former season ticket holder. I was
- 49:11in nine tenth grade, ninth or tenth grade at Cheltham High, Okay.
- 49:15I went to Penn Charter before that, and Sean, I
- 49:19have to tell you Doghouse, d Sam Mills. Okay, I
- 49:24used to be able to talk probably Chuck Fusina, Kelvin Bryant,
- 49:30the receivers, Scott, Scott Fitsky. I know I played golf
- 49:33with Scott Fitzkey, who could run by the way he
- 49:35could Chuck Kminski very good.
- 49:40Speaker 3: I mean, we're talking about forty two years ago and
- 49:42you're knocking these right off.
- 49:43Speaker 2: That's pretty impressive. People. The reason why I'm bringing this up, Shawn,
- 49:47is people do not realize. I know that I when
- 49:49I would talk to Terry Bradway, who you obviously know,
- 49:52who was a former GM of the Jets, and I
- 49:54run into Terry every couple of years and he would
- 49:58recite he goes, do you realize how many nfl airs
- 50:00we had? Who? Kevin Bryant a Super Bowl winner? I
- 50:03believe with Washington yourself obviously if you've seen it, never
- 50:08made it? Did he? He went back to Green Bay?
- 50:10Speaker 3: You know, we had I think we had six or
- 50:13seven guys after the USFL who all played.
- 50:17Speaker 2: Ten or more years and were All Stars.
- 50:19Speaker 3: Now that doesn't count another five or six that played two, three,
- 50:23four years in the league. So I don't know this,
- 50:26but I think if we'd have moved into the NFL,
- 50:29I think we could have been like a six and
- 50:31ten team.
- 50:31Speaker 2: That's my point where we would have won some games, you.
- 50:34Speaker 3: Know, not as good, but we had a terrific group
- 50:37of guys.
- 50:38Speaker 2: Really did all right. So the Eagles play at Kansas City.
- 50:40I gotta ask you Arrowhead Loud Stadium, give us some
- 50:46memories of punning our head.
- 50:47Speaker 3: You know, it's interesting there were two places. You know, nowadays,
- 50:51everywhere you go, everybody wears their colors, and I think
- 50:55it's wonderful, But back in the eighties and nineties, it
- 50:57seemed like there were two places that were doing that
- 51:00before anywhere else. It was Green Bay and Kansas City.
- 51:04And as a visitor, it's almost like when you go out,
- 51:07you would notice it, because back then a lot of
- 51:09people just were at a jean jacket or whatever. But
- 51:12you would notice it and you almost would look around
- 51:15and say, wow, this is just cool. Look at everybody
- 51:18in their colors. It was like a college atmosphere, and
- 51:21you kind of enjoyed being there. It almost it almost
- 51:25took away the edge of these our opponents and there
- 51:27against us. It was like, wow, look at them all here.
- 51:30It was really interesting that those two were the two places.
- 51:33But Arrowhead, Yeah, it's a very loud crowd there, and
- 51:37you know, they've had a great history for a lot
- 51:39of years.
- 51:39Speaker 4: And you had an electric returner that you were kicking
- 51:42to Dante Hall around that time.
- 51:43Speaker 3: He was something, you know, I got lucky one time.
- 51:46You know, I remember we were playing them, and you know,
- 51:49I hit a pretty good ball and he got through
- 51:52the first wave and as he was getting through the second,
- 51:55you know, one of our players came over and hit
- 51:57him on through the side and he had about a
- 51:59twelve fourts in your return. But I was like, I'm
- 52:01glad that guy got him, because if he didn't get him,
- 52:04I wasn't gonna get him.
- 52:05Speaker 10: So that that leads me to my next question.
- 52:07Speaker 4: Obviously, the Eagles did a lot of planning for Cavante
- 52:09Turpin and had to strategize. So for you during your
- 52:12Eagles tenure, was there.
- 52:14Speaker 10: Who was that guy?
- 52:15Speaker 2: For you?
- 52:15Speaker 4: Who did you really have to have to do a
- 52:18lot of planning and strategizing you to try and combat You.
- 52:22Speaker 3: Know, I always felt and we always felt, which is true,
- 52:25any guy you put back there can run it back
- 52:28for a touchdown because it's the NFL. Certainly some are
- 52:30better than others, but any guy you put back there
- 52:33if you don't cover and tackle and stay in your lanes.
- 52:36But you know, obviously Brian Mitchell, who was a teammate
- 52:39of mine three years year, you know, all those years
- 52:41in Washington, was one of the best ever. Dion Sanders
- 52:45was an exceptional. He had great vision.
- 52:47Speaker 2: You know. I remember we played a.
- 52:48Speaker 3: Game in Dallas because you know, Dion would kind of
- 52:52walk up to forty or thirty five yards, you know,
- 52:55and he kind of you know, he's always playing, you
- 52:57know which way you're gonna punt it, And I hit
- 53:00one over his head that you know, I say, I
- 53:03can't believe he got it, but I can because he
- 53:05was a major league center fielder.
- 53:07Speaker 2: You know, he went this way and went back by.
- 53:09I turned around.
- 53:09Speaker 3: Quilt Rover said, if he didn't catch it, and if
- 53:11it hit and rolled, I might have got a ninety
- 53:13yard punt. It was probably around a sixty yard punt.
- 53:16But he just went back brought it in with ease.
- 53:18He did a little of this and we got him.
- 53:20But you know, he was so dangerous just because of
- 53:23his skill, but just about anybody in the league and
- 53:25hurt you if you put him back there.
- 53:27Speaker 2: So you grew up in Baltimore, of course you played here.
- 53:30What were your first thoughts when you signed in Philly
- 53:33and ninety nine? What do you think the fan base? Well?
- 53:35Speaker 3: I had known about it very well because basically the
- 53:38Stars fans to me were like the eaglesh fans, where
- 53:40they loved their team, and you know, they were so happy.
- 53:43I mean, you know when we won that championship, we
- 53:46had a parade down Broad Street. There was two hundred
- 53:49and fifty thousand people really for us. Yeah, you go
- 53:52back in the archives and look that up in the
- 53:53Philadelphia Inquiry. It was unbelievable, the parade we had, the
- 53:57way they showed up. So, you know, when Andy got
- 53:59the job, he and he gave me the opportunity to
- 54:01try out. I was just so thrilled to get back
- 54:03because I know how much they care about it. Obviously,
- 54:05growing up one hundred miles south of here and living
- 54:08one hundred miles north that didn't hurt either. But you know,
- 54:12just so glad I got back here, you know, to
- 54:15get those five seasons in and now you know it's
- 54:18where I reside.
- 54:19Speaker 4: Winters in the Northeast can be absolutely brutal. How did
- 54:23you go about sort of atoning for that and accounting
- 54:27for that?
- 54:27Speaker 3: Well, I was just lucky to get to practice in
- 54:29it all the time. And what would happen is is
- 54:32you'd have to hit you know what we would call
- 54:34punts that work. A lot of times they're not the
- 54:37beautiful high spiral. Earlier in the year. You can hit
- 54:39those beautiful spirals, but when you know it gets windy
- 54:43or cold, you know, it's all about how many yards
- 54:46you can get in. You know, you knew sometimes that
- 54:49I know when I hit this punt, the way I'm
- 54:51going to hit it to maximize the yard is because
- 54:53of the situation. I know the guy on TV is
- 54:56going to say, oh, that was a poorly hit punt
- 54:58by Landetta, or I know the whole I was going
- 55:00to go, oh, but you know what, in this situation,
- 55:03I hit it low, it rolls a little. If I
- 55:05can get thirty eight with no return, and that situation
- 55:08was a terrific punt because it could have been eighteen,
- 55:11you know, based on the situation.
- 55:12Speaker 2: So you you punted for the situation.
- 55:14Speaker 3: And a lot of times guys would come in here
- 55:16and try and hit that beautiful spiral and it would
- 55:18just get knocked down. And you know, again you would
- 55:21punt to the situation, to the weather, and certainly late
- 55:25in the year that's a factor, especially in our position.
- 55:27Speaker 2: Sean, did you have a favorite punt of growing up?
- 55:29Like mine? Was Ray Guy? Did you ever got anyone?
- 55:31Did you find? No? I didn't.
- 55:33Speaker 3: It was interesting, you know. I grew up in Baltimore
- 55:35with the old Baltimore Colts. You know, we love them
- 55:37the way the Eagles loved you know, loved the Eagles,
- 55:40the fans in Philly. But yeah, I just used to
- 55:43follow all of them. And I was aware of Ray
- 55:44because in his era he was the best, best one.
- 55:47And you know, but it was so great for me,
- 55:50you know, playing at Towson University, you know, where we
- 55:53would play on Saturdays, and every Sunday we would go
- 55:55to the Colt games and I would go early, and
- 55:57I'd go with my stopwatch and I would watch all
- 56:00these guys warm up. Wow, you know, so for me
- 56:02to be able to be right there and watch how
- 56:04they punted and watch what they did, you know, it's
- 56:06just so great for me, you know, to see what
- 56:08they were doing and you know, I'd watch what they
- 56:10would do and I'd say, you know, you might get
- 56:12your chance one day. So you know, it was really great,
- 56:15you know, for me to live in a place that
- 56:17had a pro football team, because after that they didn't
- 56:19have NFL football for thirteen years until Cleveland moved back.
- 56:22Speaker 2: It's right and became the Ravens. It's right, Andrew. Let
- 56:25me ask you this question. So you with with the
- 56:28Chiefs coming, I mean, the Eagles, as you know, don't
- 56:30have back to back home games all year, which is absurd. Yeah,
- 56:32I've never heard of that before me either. Your guys
- 56:35in the locker room. You've got to know these players really,
- 56:37really well, and you talked about earlier, how look they
- 56:43they know they could play better. What's your outlook for
- 56:46this game for the Egals in the Chiefs.
- 56:48Speaker 4: Well, I think they're going to go back to the
- 56:50drawing board, figure out what worked. And they're their own
- 56:52worst critic talking to a lot of those guys that
- 56:55they know how good they can be. And I don't
- 56:58know that you can make too much off of one.
- 57:00It was Week one, and like it or not, the
- 57:03first month of the season is an extension of the preseason,
- 57:05So I think the more you play and get that
- 57:07continuity with one another, you start to really establish an
- 57:11identity and they know what they're going, what they're capable of.
- 57:14Speaker 2: Sean, let me ask you a question because Andrew and
- 57:16I we've talked about this over the years. Sometimes when
- 57:20I go to training camp, I don't like to make
- 57:22broad statements, but I'm with the Eagles and Browns. In
- 57:27twenty twenty two, so a former a former NFL head
- 57:30coach who I'd gotten know a little bit through travels,
- 57:33I run into them and I said, hey, coach, what
- 57:36do you think this team goes? Oh, Phillies making the
- 57:38Super Bowl? Like, how do you know that? Because I coached,
- 57:40and I know what I'm looking at. And he wasn't
- 57:42trying to be dismissive, but he broke He broke it down.
- 57:44He goes, here's what I love you as a former player.
- 57:49Because you go to camps. Do you go do you
- 57:51get wilds sometimes where you say, hey, I gotta be careful,
- 57:54but this team's really good. What happens when you go
- 57:56to camps?
- 57:56Speaker 3: Well, you know, I really don't go to many camps.
- 57:59You know, I see the Eagles periodically. Sometimes the Giants
- 58:01will have their alumni back and you see them. But
- 58:04I've I've always felt, you know, I've always felt that
- 58:07you can't take that much out of camp. I mean,
- 58:10when you see a great play, it's a great play.
- 58:12But you know, you just look at the roster, you know,
- 58:14and the Eagles don't have five or six really good players.
- 58:16They got like twelve to fifteen, Yeah, really good players.
- 58:19Most NFL teams don't have that. I don't know if
- 58:21there's one that does. But it'll just be interesting this Sunday,
- 58:25you know, in Kansas City. One thing that should be
- 58:26a huge advantage for the Eagles is they have their
- 58:30best defensive lineman back on the field. And I'm very surprised.
- 58:33I thought he might have been suspended.
- 58:34Speaker 2: For the skin.
- 58:35Speaker 3: We should mention jail Card was not suspended, but what
- 58:37a difference it should be with him in the middle
- 58:39of the great point.
- 58:40Speaker 2: All right, guys, you need to wrap it up. Thank
- 58:42you so much to our friends here at Chicken and
- 58:43Pizza Parks, because you know, for shar Landetta, he's Andrew
- 58:47the checko. I'm Adam Kaplan. We'll see you next week
- 58:51at Chicky's in Warrington. Thanks for listening
- 59:00Speaker 8: Three
