- 0:00Speaker 1: And that showed you how deep the rabbit hole goes own
- 0:05Speaker 1: Poindexter joining us from the Athletic for the first time here.
- 0:08Speaker 1: We're excited to talk to him about a little fantasy
- 0:10Speaker 1: sports and what's happening here in the baseball world. He
- 0:13Speaker 1: just put out a fresh article in the Athletic about
- 0:14Speaker 1: buy sell hold. So Owen, first off, great to have
- 0:17Speaker 1: you on here. And if you just want to kind
- 0:19Speaker 1: of start saying hello to us the same way you
- 0:21Speaker 1: said hello in the article, you can just tell everybody
- 0:24Speaker 1: in any league that you're participating in to yes, sell
- 0:27Speaker 1: Julio Rodriguez, trade him to you. You will take him
- 0:30Speaker 1: for pennies on the dollar right now.
- 0:32Speaker 2: Right absolutely, yeah, if you want my WILLI or Breu, which,
- 0:35Speaker 2: as you can see from the stat line, he's like
- 0:37Speaker 2: the new Mic Trout. I'll all do your favor. Take
- 0:40Speaker 2: j rud off your hands, Roman Anthony too, you know,
- 0:43Speaker 2: drop that guy not doing anything for you. I'll just
- 0:46Speaker 2: I'll be the nice guy and then do that for you.
- 0:49Speaker 2: And thanks for having me on. Guys told to be here.
- 0:52Speaker 1: Yeah, so I want to start here. Let's start with
- 0:54Speaker 1: a cell guy. We'll hit a couple on each parts
- 0:57Speaker 1: of your list, right, So I want to hit a
- 0:59Speaker 1: cell guy and let's go to Munautaki Morikami. Right, Munataka Morikami.
- 1:05Speaker 1: This is a guy who's a rookie who was highly,
- 1:07Speaker 1: highly debated in the off season, and you are not
- 1:10Speaker 1: buying what he's selling with the power right now? Is
- 1:12Speaker 1: that correct?
- 1:14Speaker 2: That is basically correct? So I mean this the cell part.
- 1:17Speaker 2: I found the hardest part of this because I can't
- 1:20Speaker 2: just tell you to, like, you know, sell the guy
- 1:23Speaker 2: with the six hundred bad bit because everyone knows they're
- 1:26Speaker 2: coming down. We're too savvy at this point. You need
- 1:29Speaker 2: someone with a narrative of you know, this guy has
- 1:33Speaker 2: never failed. You know, he's got incredible power. He's never
- 1:36Speaker 2: failed in MLB. Now's the time to be like, look,
- 1:39Speaker 2: this is this is who he is. Like he's showing
- 1:41Speaker 2: us like he's a monster. And the thing is he
- 1:44Speaker 2: is a monster. So I do buy the power. I
- 1:47Speaker 2: also buy the I think he's struck out in a
- 1:50Speaker 2: third of his plate appearances that I think is going
- 1:53Speaker 2: to be steady. I think he's also got a forty
- 1:55Speaker 2: percent homer for fly ball, that it's going to be
- 1:58Speaker 2: high because he does have monster power, but it's not
- 2:00Speaker 2: gonna stay this high.
- 2:01Speaker 3: This is probably basically.
- 2:03Speaker 2: The best version we're gonna see of him, and if
- 2:06Speaker 2: someone wants to pay for that, then go for it.
- 2:09Speaker 2: If no one wants to pay for that, then that's
- 2:11Speaker 2: okay too. You can hold on to him. He'll give
- 2:13Speaker 2: you thirty something. Homer's probably a pretty bad batting average.
- 2:19Speaker 2: He's basically another Colson Montgomery. Maybe this is the new
- 2:21Speaker 2: White Sox model. But with the sell things, I'm not
- 2:25Speaker 2: saying this guy is bad. I'm saying there's a narrative
- 2:28Speaker 2: here that might be suggesting that they're better than they are,
- 2:32Speaker 2: and I think Murakami is an easy case for that
- 2:34Speaker 2: because we've never seen him fail.
- 2:37Speaker 4: What is the narrative on Sandy Alcantara. I mean, this
- 2:40Speaker 4: guy's been absolutely filthy his past two starts. Talk to
- 2:44Speaker 4: me about that. You got selling on him too.
- 2:47Speaker 2: I got selling on him too, And it's the same thing.
- 2:49Speaker 2: Sandy's great. If you're a Marlins fan, you're thrilled to
- 2:52Speaker 2: have Sandy, and then you're gonna be thrilled to have
- 2:54Speaker 2: whoever they get for him in a trade at some point.
- 2:57Speaker 2: But unless they're contending, who knows. But yeah, is again
- 3:01Speaker 2: not a knock on Sandy himself. What I'm saying is
- 3:03Speaker 2: a lot of people are gonna see these first couple starts,
- 3:06Speaker 2: which I think at home against the Rockies, which is
- 3:09Speaker 2: just you know, a great matchup for him, and at
- 3:11Speaker 2: home against the White Sox's he's.
- 3:15Speaker 3: A great pitcher.
- 3:16Speaker 2: People remember that twenty twenty two season where he was
- 3:19Speaker 2: awesome and the early start might make you kind of
- 3:23Speaker 2: wash from your brain, twenty twenty three, twenty twenty four
- 3:26Speaker 2: when he wasn't pitching at all, twenty twenty.
- 3:27Speaker 3: Five, when again not great.
- 3:30Speaker 2: All of that history is relevant, including the cy Young
- 3:33Speaker 2: season when he was incredible. He hasn't given up a
- 3:35Speaker 2: home run this year, which two starts. Nothing crazy about that,
- 3:40Speaker 2: but he will give up home runs. He's like a
- 3:43Speaker 2: twenty one percent ish strikeout guy. Not terrible, but not elite,
- 3:47Speaker 2: certainly not like the Schemes and Scooples of the world. Again,
- 3:51Speaker 2: the narrative is there that he might give you another
- 3:55Speaker 2: of these cy Young seasons, and so you might be
- 3:57Speaker 2: able in your fantasy league, or perhaps if you're in
- 3:59Speaker 2: the Mark front off as you might be able to
- 4:01Speaker 2: sell him as that of like twenty twenty two, Sandy
- 4:04Speaker 2: is back maybe he is. That is the risk when
- 4:07Speaker 2: you trade. Every trade has risk, and the risk is
- 4:10Speaker 2: that you're wrong, the risk of that I'm wrong, and
- 4:12Speaker 2: I'm saying he's, you know, probably gonna settle into mid threes. Yeah,
- 4:18Speaker 2: twenty one percent strikeout rate, mid Threeszra, that's a good picture.
- 4:23Speaker 2: It's not a like aces Ace though, And you might
- 4:26Speaker 2: get someone remembering twenty twenty two when he was the
- 4:31Speaker 2: best picture in baseball. Unless I'm forgetting someone and saying,
- 4:35Speaker 2: you know, that guy is who I'm getting, and maybe
- 4:38Speaker 2: you get someone to pay up for that.
- 4:40Speaker 5: So you work for the Marlins, is what you're saying.
- 4:43Speaker 5: You're you're you're going there and you're saying, Okay, Sandy
- 4:46Speaker 5: al Contra is going to be a guy that isn't
- 4:49Speaker 5: like you better buy him now because or the Marlins
- 4:51Speaker 5: better sell him now because he's gonna regress back to
- 4:55Speaker 5: the to the meme, or that's actually the maturation of
- 4:59Speaker 5: a picture. Who puts the ball on the ground, looks
- 5:02Speaker 5: for innings because of your fantasy league gives you innings,
- 5:05Speaker 5: gives you complete game bonuses. It might make up for
- 5:08Speaker 5: the fact that he's only going to strike out one
- 5:10Speaker 5: guy per inning.
- 5:11Speaker 3: Which is still pretty decent.
- 5:13Speaker 2: Yeah, if you do get a complete game bonus, then
- 5:15Speaker 2: hang on to Sandi al Contra because he's like one
- 5:19Speaker 2: of like one guy that's going to give text. Maybe
- 5:21Speaker 2: school throws one in there once in a while, but yeah,
- 5:23Speaker 2: there's gonna be like four complete games this season, and
- 5:26Speaker 2: like probably three of them from him.
- 5:28Speaker 5: Yes, so I'm gonna trade you your Sandy al Contra
- 5:33Speaker 5: for Cam Smith. Are you are you taking that by?
- 5:37Speaker 3: That's that is?
- 5:38Speaker 2: I love Cam Smith. I love Camp Smith. That is
- 5:40Speaker 2: a French for Smith. Just you know, all the bye
- 5:43Speaker 2: I'm saying. So I'm imagining a market, right, I'm saying
- 5:46Speaker 2: people don't really know Cam Smith yet and maybe we're
- 5:50Speaker 2: just calling this a hot streak. I was on him
- 5:53Speaker 2: at the start of the year because the tools are awesome.
- 5:57Speaker 2: He's super fast, he's got power, he's got something of
- 6:00Speaker 2: a hit tool, and all of a sudden he's putting
- 6:05Speaker 2: that together. He's not going to be the guy he's
- 6:08Speaker 2: been for the first two weeks for the rest of
- 6:09Speaker 2: the season, but he's exciting right now and if you
- 6:13Speaker 2: can get him, I mean, he might still be on
- 6:15Speaker 2: the waiver wire in a lot of leagues at please
- 6:17Speaker 2: pick him up right now. If you can, you might
- 6:20Speaker 2: be able to get someone like I mean, Sandy's a
- 6:22Speaker 2: little rich, but you know, you can probably find someone who's,
- 6:26Speaker 2: you know, just like a decent player. I'm struggling to
- 6:29Speaker 2: think of, like what is perfect in all leagues are
- 6:32Speaker 2: a little bit different right now. But if someone wants
- 6:35Speaker 2: to say, you know, I just I pick Cam Smith up,
- 6:37Speaker 2: you know, with my last pick in the draft, and
- 6:39Speaker 2: he's been great. But maybe I'll I'll give you someone
- 6:43Speaker 2: or I'll trade for someone who going into this season
- 6:47Speaker 2: I liked a.
- 6:48Speaker 3: Little bit more.
- 6:50Speaker 2: I'd go for that because I do love Cam Smith.
- 6:53Speaker 2: Sandy would be a lot for Cam Smith, just because
- 6:55Speaker 2: one's in the bikelum and ones in the cell column.
- 6:57Speaker 2: I'm imagining that people coming into or like, you know,
- 7:01Speaker 2: Sandy's a cy young winner, Cam Smith, like, what's he
- 7:03Speaker 2: even done yet? So yeah, if you give me Cam
- 7:07Speaker 2: Smith in the next eye on that list Jordan Walker
- 7:09Speaker 2: for Sandy. And now we're talking.
- 7:12Speaker 1: With over thirty five million downloads. What is the number
- 7:16Speaker 1: one rated ticketing app?
- 7:17Speaker 4: Todd Father, It's simple, man, see geek as we know, man,
- 7:20Speaker 4: they have a lot of things that helps you out
- 7:22Speaker 4: along the way. They have green dots meaning good and
- 7:25Speaker 4: red dots meaning bad, and it's on a scale of
- 7:27Speaker 4: one to ten, showing you, Scott, how good the seats are.
- 7:30Speaker 4: And sometimes you want to sit in the nosebleedzer, sometimes
- 7:33Speaker 4: you want to sit in really good seats and Scott,
- 7:35Speaker 4: you know the code.
- 7:35Speaker 3: Right, yeah? I do.
- 7:36Speaker 1: And also I know that you always like a good deal.
- 7:38Speaker 6: Oh so Seek.
- 7:39Speaker 1: Helps you out all the time with that. They also
- 7:41Speaker 1: help you out with the exclusive FT code which is
- 7:45Speaker 1: Territory ten for ten percent off your next set of
- 7:47Speaker 1: tickets at Sea Geek. That's ten percent off any tickets
- 7:51Speaker 1: with promo code t E R R I R Y
- 7:54Speaker 1: one zero. Make sure you click the link in the
- 7:56Speaker 1: description to download the app and you can have that
- 7:59Speaker 1: code automatically added to your account so that you can
- 8:01Speaker 1: use it later. There are regular season MLB games going
- 8:04Speaker 1: on right now. There are hot tickets across the country,
- 8:08Speaker 1: so make sure you go to seat Geek. They will
- 8:10Speaker 1: take care of you.
- 8:12Speaker 5: Okay, so that was gonna be My next question is
- 8:15Speaker 5: the next two guys on your list are Jordan Walker
- 8:17Speaker 5: and Williadamas. Will Adamas clearly a more established player, but
- 8:22Speaker 5: when you're talking about fantasy value. You're talking about Williadomas
- 8:26Speaker 5: in San Francisco. Does that make you a little bit
- 8:29Speaker 5: more nervous? And with Jordan Walker's hot start, Charlie Manuel,
- 8:34Speaker 5: he told me plenty of times water levels out because
- 8:38Speaker 5: he might not be a forty home run guy, which
- 8:40Speaker 5: he's on pace for right now.
- 8:42Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, at least that. Yeah, Jordan Walker very similar
- 8:46Speaker 2: to Cam Smith. Incredible power like Murra COMI like power
- 8:50Speaker 2: and combine that with elite speed. Now that he's hitting,
- 8:55Speaker 2: very exciting player. The danger is that the strikeout Mcami,
- 9:00Speaker 2: the strikeouts are going to be there. We are seeing
- 9:03Speaker 2: the best version of Jordan Walker. It's only two weeks,
- 9:06Speaker 2: but he's only twenty three, Like you know, that's that's
- 9:10Speaker 2: you know, Bubba Chandler's twenty three. I think Cam Smith's
- 9:13Speaker 2: brown twenty three. I mean, this is the age of
- 9:16Speaker 2: a player that might just be coming up. The difference
- 9:19Speaker 2: with Jordan Walker is we've seen him fail for a
- 9:22Speaker 2: couple of years now, and so he has the narrative
- 9:26Speaker 2: going into the year is going in the opposite direction
- 9:28Speaker 2: of he's kind of a forgotten man, but he's young
- 9:32Speaker 2: enough that this could be the start of a true
- 9:34Speaker 2: breakout and he's got the tools where if that hit
- 9:36Speaker 2: tool just gets a little bit better, he's he could
- 9:40Speaker 2: be a true star. A Damas is on the opposite
- 9:44Speaker 2: side of things, where and I listed a bunch of
- 9:46Speaker 2: players on the column of like, these guys are probably fine.
- 9:50Speaker 2: Adamas is probably fine. Last year wasn't great, But first
- 9:54Speaker 2: year in a big contract in yeah, in the stadium
- 9:56Speaker 2: that suppresses power a bit. He's still hit a lot
- 9:59Speaker 2: of homers. I forget exactly how many, but it is
- 10:01Speaker 2: something like twenty five or something like the ball can't
- 10:03Speaker 2: leave the park in San Francisco. Okay, Yeah, so even
- 10:06Speaker 2: more than I was remembering. He's still got power, he's
- 10:09Speaker 2: still got speed. He's gonna be in there every day
- 10:11Speaker 2: because he plays great defense.
- 10:12Speaker 3: He's the shortstop.
- 10:13Speaker 2: Teams tend to not mess around with a shortstop too much.
- 10:17Speaker 2: I think it's just a cold start, and I think
- 10:20Speaker 2: he's better than he was last year. That first year
- 10:24Speaker 2: on a big new contract, players tend to chase a
- 10:27Speaker 2: little bit more than usual. I tend to avoid those
- 10:30Speaker 2: players in fantasy, just because there's a lot of hype
- 10:33Speaker 2: from the contract and from the big year they probably
- 10:35Speaker 2: just had. If they had that contract and they tend
- 10:38Speaker 2: to want to show off. He might be seeing that
- 10:40Speaker 2: with Pete Alonzo right now and in Baltimore for one example.
- 10:45Speaker 2: Those players tend to be a little rocky at least
- 10:48Speaker 2: the first month or two. Adamis is one of many
- 10:51Speaker 2: players who I think is going to be fine. You know,
- 10:55Speaker 2: if you're in like a ten team league with one shortstop,
- 10:57Speaker 2: then he's kind of borderline. But you know, if you've
- 11:02Speaker 2: got some depth in your league, he's going to be
- 11:05Speaker 2: useful and you might have that narrative of he was
- 11:08Speaker 2: bad last year. He's in the pitcher's park bad relatively
- 11:12Speaker 2: obviously that relative to what we've seen from him. I
- 11:15Speaker 2: think he can kind of straighten out and be something
- 11:17Speaker 2: closer to the Brewer's version.
- 11:20Speaker 5: All Right, some of the people you have on your
- 11:21Speaker 5: whole list, One of the guys I want to definitely
- 11:24Speaker 5: hit on here is Todd's buddy, Matthew Libertore. Could he
- 11:29Speaker 5: be on people's list and somebody that you should be
- 11:33Speaker 5: buying if he's not on your list because of the
- 11:35Speaker 5: fact that the way that he's kind of been given
- 11:38Speaker 5: this you know, opening they start, the fact that he's
- 11:40Speaker 5: now you know, kind of coming into his own on
- 11:43Speaker 5: a team that doesn't have any veterans that you know,
- 11:46Speaker 5: are the step up guys in the rotation. Couldn't he
- 11:49Speaker 5: be more of a definitely should buy kind of guy.
- 11:53Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, with the whole list a lot of them,
- 11:56Speaker 2: I'm kind of being pulled in two directions. There's there's
- 11:58Speaker 2: a good case for buying or tour, and certainly if
- 12:01Speaker 2: he's on your waiver wire, you know worth picking him
- 12:03Speaker 2: up and seeing what you can get. The by cases, yet,
- 12:06Speaker 2: he's not going anywhere in that rotation unless they trade him, obviously,
- 12:09Speaker 2: but they'll be trading him into a team that wants
- 12:11Speaker 2: to use him. He's there the closest thing they have
- 12:15Speaker 2: to just to start him every five days and hope
- 12:17Speaker 2: for the best kind of thing. This stuff is looking
- 12:20Speaker 2: pretty good. He's got a history of at least being
- 12:23Speaker 2: an average pitcher. You're probably gonna get some decent run suppression,
- 12:27Speaker 2: whether that's him finding a few more strikeouts or just
- 12:30Speaker 2: keeping the ball on the ground. I like the kitchen
- 12:32Speaker 2: sink approach a lot to like there. The sell or
- 12:37Speaker 2: just be less enthoosed case is that these strikeouts have
- 12:41Speaker 2: not shown up. He's getting a lot of those like
- 12:44Speaker 2: luck stats like his strand rate is very high.
- 12:47Speaker 3: I think it's babbit.
- 12:48Speaker 2: I couldn't tell you off hand, but I think it's
- 12:49Speaker 2: on the low side. And so we might be seeing
- 12:55Speaker 2: a couple of nice starts where once those those hits
- 12:59Speaker 2: start finding more holes, maybe the weather warms up. He's
- 13:02Speaker 2: in a picture's park as well. But you know, the Midwest,
- 13:06Speaker 2: I think, is a place where the start of the
- 13:09Speaker 2: year and the middle of the year are going to
- 13:11Speaker 2: be pretty different because the ball is going to the
- 13:13Speaker 2: physics are going to change. It changes everywhere, obviously, but
- 13:16Speaker 2: you see it especially, you see it more there than
- 13:18Speaker 2: you see it in California.
- 13:20Speaker 3: So I like Liberatore.
- 13:23Speaker 2: It depends on your league how much you get punished
- 13:26Speaker 2: for having a picture who doesn't have the same strikeout
- 13:30Speaker 2: rate as some of the other guys you're going to
- 13:32Speaker 2: be looking at.
- 13:33Speaker 3: He's steady, he's.
- 13:34Speaker 2: Going to be in there a lot, and yeah, maybe
- 13:36Speaker 2: he's got a little bit more that he can work with.
- 13:39Speaker 2: Maybe the stuff can come up, and maybe the strikeouts
- 13:41Speaker 2: can come up. That's the by case. At this point,
- 13:45Speaker 2: I kind of feel like I want to buy him
- 13:48Speaker 2: at What you see is what you get, and you
- 13:50Speaker 2: hope for more. You hope for you know, where you're
- 13:54Speaker 2: buying is something like a high three CRA and twenty
- 13:58Speaker 2: ish percent strikeout rate, and and you hope he's got
- 14:01Speaker 2: a little bit more there.
- 14:04Speaker 1: Hey, I want to ask you about Carson Bench. Rookie,
- 14:08Speaker 1: A lot of excitement, a lot of hype makes the roster.
- 14:11Speaker 1: They left a spot open for him. He's slumping lately.
- 14:14Speaker 1: He's hitting a buck about of one hundred so far
- 14:16Speaker 1: on the season. You know, had the first big game
- 14:19Speaker 1: and then you haven't heard much about him since then.
- 14:21Speaker 1: He's on your hold list.
- 14:23Speaker 2: Why for all the reasons you said at the beginning
- 14:28Speaker 2: there he's I mean the reason he's on the team
- 14:31Speaker 2: over a serviceable player like Tyrone Taylor where he's starting
- 14:35Speaker 2: starting over Tyrone Taylor.
- 14:37Speaker 3: Is he can hit.
- 14:38Speaker 2: He's fast, you know, he's he brings a lot to
- 14:41Speaker 2: the table. He hasn't done a whole lot so far.
- 14:45Speaker 2: And that is I would assume one because slump's happened too.
- 14:50Speaker 2: This is his first time facing major league pitching. It
- 14:53Speaker 2: turns out it's pretty hard, and so he you know,
- 14:56Speaker 2: this is a pretty normal process to go through it. Looke,
- 15:00Speaker 2: just like he wants to steal. So at least here
- 15:02Speaker 2: you're getting that when he gets on base, he's looks
- 15:04Speaker 2: like he's looking to run and more and more. That's
- 15:07Speaker 2: something I look for in players of not only are
- 15:09Speaker 2: they fast? Are they I mean look at like south
- 15:12Speaker 2: Stewart is my current favorite example of him. I think
- 15:14Speaker 2: he might be the new Josh Naylor and that he
- 15:16Speaker 2: might just be a slow guy who steals like twenty
- 15:18Speaker 2: thirty bases this year. Some guys just choose to do that.
- 15:22Speaker 2: Ben's fast and choosing to do that, and he's going
- 15:25Speaker 2: to be better than this the cell cases. Maybe he's
- 15:30Speaker 2: going to be better than this at Triple A while
- 15:32Speaker 2: the Mets let him, you know, build his confidence back up,
- 15:35Speaker 2: sort things out a bit, send them down for a
- 15:37Speaker 2: month or two, and then you know, maybe bring him
- 15:39Speaker 2: back up in the summer when there's a need. So yeah,
- 15:44Speaker 2: I would like to have a roster spot for him.
- 15:46Speaker 2: See where this goes. At least bank those steals, and
- 15:51Speaker 2: you know, hope that the guy they that they left
- 15:54Speaker 2: a spot for is the guy who shows up in May, June, July.
- 15:59Speaker 2: It's hard to say when someone's under the windows a
- 16:01Speaker 2: ligne though.
- 16:02Speaker 1: Oh and last one for you, we have a fan
- 16:05Speaker 1: question asking if they should buy, sell or hold Adley Rutchman.
- 16:09Speaker 1: So this is a good example of someone who's been
- 16:13Speaker 1: fine right now in terms of OPS plus and how
- 16:16Speaker 1: the front office is valuing him just for the first
- 16:18Speaker 1: couple weeks of the season. A lot of that has
- 16:20Speaker 1: to do with his on base percentage. Most leagues don't
- 16:23Speaker 1: have on base percentage three point fifty three OBP. He's
- 16:26Speaker 1: in one seventeen OPS plus and for catchers, the OPS
- 16:30Speaker 1: plus league averages one hundred. Usually it's it's lower for catchers.
- 16:34Speaker 1: So that's a good number. If you get that for
- 16:35Speaker 1: the whole year, and you're a front office, you're like,
- 16:38Speaker 1: that's a very good catcher. That's a valuable catcher if
- 16:40Speaker 1: he can play defense. Right, But let's focus on what
- 16:42Speaker 1: the fantasy stats look like. Two forty one, no homers,
- 16:47Speaker 1: three RBIs, three runs scored, and last year he hit
- 16:51Speaker 1: two twenty with nine homers and twenty nine RBIs. Of course,
- 16:54Speaker 1: he missed significant time. That was in a little over
- 16:57Speaker 1: half a season, but even now, you know, going to
- 17:00Speaker 1: the year before two fifty nineteen seventy nine, so like,
- 17:03Speaker 1: it's fine, but it doesn't look like a star like
- 17:06Speaker 1: we thought about do you think that you're going to
- 17:08Speaker 1: see those numbers get back to at least what he
- 17:11Speaker 1: was doing early in his career. How would you measure
- 17:14Speaker 1: him at this point?
- 17:15Speaker 2: Yeah, I like Adley. I think he's at least a
- 17:18Speaker 2: hold for me. And again, those like runs RBI numbers
- 17:23Speaker 2: early in the season, they just don't mean a whole lot.
- 17:26Speaker 2: It's arguable how much they mean in the middle of
- 17:30Speaker 2: the season. It's a lot of it's that's just luck.
- 17:32Speaker 2: That's I mean, it's your team context, that's where you
- 17:34Speaker 2: hitting the lineup. But it's also like you hit a
- 17:37Speaker 2: double great and then you know the next three guys
- 17:39Speaker 2: struck out. That's not your fault.
- 17:40Speaker 3: You did your job.
- 17:43Speaker 2: I think that that's gonna be a good lineup. I
- 17:47Speaker 2: think Adley's a goodhitter. I mean you're seeing it in
- 17:49Speaker 2: what he's doing right now. And those are the guys
- 17:52Speaker 2: that you can sometimes profit on of, like, oh this guy,
- 17:56Speaker 2: you know, it's like what have they done for me lately?
- 17:58Speaker 2: Or what have they done for me my fantasy stats
- 18:01Speaker 2: so far. I wouldn't worry too much about the runs RBIs.
- 18:05Speaker 2: I'd be more encouraged to say, like this guy he's
- 18:08Speaker 2: hitting right now, he's getting on base. I think the
- 18:11Speaker 2: production's gonna be there, especially at catcher. I think Adley
- 18:16Speaker 2: is I would say a light by for me. Again,
- 18:19Speaker 2: it depends a bit on the two catcher league absolutely. Yeah,
- 18:22Speaker 2: don't don't get rid of Ali Rushman. I think two
- 18:25Speaker 2: catcher leagues are kind of insane. But even as you know,
- 18:29Speaker 2: like a twelve team one catcher situation. Yeah, I like
- 18:33Speaker 2: Adlie enough. I think he's got those core skills. Catcher
- 18:37Speaker 2: is a hard position, and he had a sort of
- 18:40Speaker 2: rough injury interrupted year last year. He's still pretty young.
- 18:46Speaker 2: I know that when these guys aren't like instant stars.
- 18:50Speaker 2: It's like, well, Mike Traut is an instant star, you know, like,
- 18:53Speaker 2: come on, I can get with the program Adley. But
- 18:55Speaker 2: you know, it's there's there's a lot to take in
- 18:58Speaker 2: for him, and it hasn't been a smooth ride. I'm
- 19:02Speaker 2: willing to see where this goes with him because I
- 19:04Speaker 2: think the core skills are there. Don't assume he's going
- 19:07Speaker 2: to be a superstar right away or maybe ever, but
- 19:11Speaker 2: a pretty good hitting catcher in you know, at a
- 19:13Speaker 2: position where it's hard to find that level of production.
- 19:16Speaker 1: Yeah, I'll take that. Owen, good stuff, man. We enjoyed
- 19:20Speaker 1: hearing from you. Thanks for the time. Good to have
- 19:22Speaker 1: you on here for the first time. Hope you had
- 19:23Speaker 1: fun too, And also you can catch the article that
- 19:25Speaker 1: we're talking about with many more names in the athletic
- 19:28Speaker 1: from Owen.
- 19:29Speaker 7: Thank you, dude, Yeah, anytime. Thank you.
- 19:40Speaker 1: You're having fun with this team. They've won four in
- 19:42Speaker 1: a row. Like to paint the picture for us, what's
- 19:44Speaker 1: it like right now? What do you think is the
- 19:46Speaker 1: identity of the team and who are some of the
- 19:48Speaker 1: personalities that stand out that keep things fun and loose
- 19:51Speaker 1: for you guys.
- 19:54Speaker 6: Yeah, we just have a real tight knit group of guys.
- 19:56Speaker 6: I feel like, you.
- 19:58Speaker 8: Know, we have a better like Tole Freeland, and you know,
- 20:03Speaker 8: other guys in the locker room that just you know,
- 20:05Speaker 8: are good key pieces to our you know, already good team.
- 20:09Speaker 8: We have Hunter Goodman who's an All Star already, other
- 20:13Speaker 8: players that I'm just forgetting the name. But we're a
- 20:15Speaker 8: tight knit group and we just try to go out
- 20:19Speaker 8: there and win ball games.
- 20:21Speaker 3: All right.
- 20:22Speaker 5: I got I got one simple question for you. How
- 20:25Speaker 5: many people's names have you forgotten? Because when a rookie
- 20:28Speaker 5: would come up I would call it. When I would
- 20:29Speaker 5: call people to the front of the bus, I would go,
- 20:32Speaker 5: I would go, dis my name Poppy. Because you just
- 20:36Speaker 5: got to the organization. You're trying to learn these guys.
- 20:39Speaker 5: How hard is that as a as a one, as
- 20:42Speaker 5: a young player two, coming into a new organization. All
- 20:46Speaker 5: you've had is spring training with these dudes.
- 20:50Speaker 8: Yeah, it's just, you know, coming to a new new organization.
- 20:53Speaker 8: It's just you know, trying to learn names. As you
- 20:56Speaker 8: all know, it's just trying to remember people's names and
- 21:00Speaker 8: saying hello every day and just trying to be the
- 21:02Speaker 8: same guy, you know, being consistent, saying you know, saying
- 21:07Speaker 8: hello to the right people, to the you know, to
- 21:10Speaker 8: the kitchen staff, you know, all the way to you know,
- 21:12Speaker 8: front office managers, coaches, just making sure that you're there
- 21:16Speaker 8: every day and doing the right things.
- 21:20Speaker 4: Hey, you're hitting really well right now. I love your approach.
- 21:23Speaker 4: I love the way you're doing things. Can you explain
- 21:26Speaker 4: to me, one, give me your routine. I always want
- 21:29Speaker 4: to ask these guys a routine, especially as the youngster
- 21:31Speaker 4: coming up. Give me specifics on the routine you do
- 21:34Speaker 4: and what's your approach right now? Going up there to
- 21:37Speaker 4: the play.
- 21:39Speaker 8: I feel like I try to keep it as simple
- 21:41Speaker 8: as possible. You know, see the ball, hit the ball.
- 21:44Speaker 8: My routine in the cage is just kind of, I mean,
- 21:48Speaker 8: pretty bland. I just asked the coach to get on
- 21:51Speaker 8: one knee and shoot me some darts and just try
- 21:54Speaker 8: to hit home runs to the right field. And you know,
- 21:58Speaker 8: if I can do that in the game, then I'm successful.
- 22:00Speaker 8: And that's what I mean. The plan is just keep
- 22:03Speaker 8: it simple, damage to right field.
- 22:07Speaker 4: And I gotta be honest with you. That is so
- 22:09Speaker 4: refreshing to hear from a younger guy coming up, like
- 22:12Speaker 4: I know, Cratzy, I'm clicking Cratzy, let me talk again,
- 22:15Speaker 4: because he had a question like for me, there's no
- 22:19Speaker 4: drill in the world that can make you successful. Then
- 22:22Speaker 4: one your brain being there focus up here, and two
- 22:26Speaker 4: making sure my hands are where they need to be.
- 22:27Speaker 4: And that's basically what you're saying. Give me some flips,
- 22:30Speaker 4: let me square the ball up, let me hit down
- 22:32Speaker 4: on it. And I'm trying to get directional with the ball.
- 22:35Speaker 4: I don't care what numbers can tell you anything. I
- 22:37Speaker 4: don't care about any launch angle, I don't care about
- 22:39Speaker 4: any of that stuff.
- 22:40Speaker 6: Well, you just.
- 22:41Speaker 4: Said I need that and I need that buttoned up.
- 22:44Speaker 4: I'm gonna show all my young kids that I work with.
- 22:46Speaker 4: You don't need to do extra stuff that is not
- 22:49Speaker 4: worth doing you if people who do all that crap,
- 22:52Speaker 4: it's just crap at the end of the day. For
- 22:54Speaker 4: you to say that, and you're being successful right now,
- 22:57Speaker 4: kudos to you and stick with that plan, young man.
- 23:00Speaker 4: This is very You just woken me up. Bro, This
- 23:02Speaker 4: is fantastic, absolutely good for you.
- 23:07Speaker 5: Todd usually spends most of the show on his phone,
- 23:09Speaker 5: so for you to like get his attention, that's awesome.
- 23:13Speaker 3: But I want to add, like, Okay.
- 23:16Speaker 5: All these dudes, all these dudes went through the whatever
- 23:19Speaker 5: they call it, the digital height measuring and spring training.
- 23:23Speaker 5: I see you out on the field. I watch because
- 23:25Speaker 5: you guys are doing well. I've watched a few Rockies
- 23:28Speaker 5: games this year. Last year I didn't watch any. I
- 23:31Speaker 5: see you out on the field. Did you lie on
- 23:33Speaker 5: your height on your thing because it says you're six'
- 23:35Speaker 5: five and you look way taller than six y five
- 23:38Speaker 5: or everybody else on The rockies is short.
- 23:41Speaker 8: Short, no they came in and measured, us and so
- 23:44Speaker 8: if they have me at six y, FIVE i wasn't
- 23:46Speaker 8: bending at all BECAUSE i don't want. THAT i don't
- 23:48Speaker 8: want the lower part of the strike zone to be even.
- 23:50Speaker 8: LOWER i kind of want that to be as high
- 23:52Speaker 8: AS i. Can SO i was standing straight up as
- 23:55Speaker 8: tall AS i could when they measured.
- 23:57Speaker 3: Us that is such a great.
- 24:00Speaker 5: Point nobody has talked about that because everybody's talked about
- 24:03Speaker 5: the fact, that OR i haven't seen anybody talk about
- 24:05Speaker 5: it because everybody talks, About, oh you, KNOW i want
- 24:08Speaker 5: TO i want to make Sure I'm i'm, shorter so
- 24:10Speaker 5: that the so that my strike zone is. Smaller but
- 24:13Speaker 5: you're saying that you standing up make sure that the
- 24:17Speaker 5: bottom part of your strike zone is, smaller or you're
- 24:22Speaker 5: saying the bottom part of your strike zone is at
- 24:24Speaker 5: a higher.
- 24:24Speaker 8: Height H i think it's at a higher, height is
- 24:27Speaker 8: What i'm is What i'm. Understanding so IF i wanted
- 24:30Speaker 8: to be, shorter THEN i would have a you, know
- 24:32Speaker 8: a strike.
- 24:32Speaker 6: Zone i'm a smaller. Guy that's not WHAT i. WANT
- 24:34Speaker 6: i don't want the lower part of the zone Where
- 24:35Speaker 6: i'm not familiar.
- 24:36Speaker 3: WITH i love.
- 24:38Speaker 5: THAT i love that talk about hitting In. Colorado i'm
- 24:42Speaker 5: assuming you didn't you heard for about six weeks in
- 24:45Speaker 5: spring training people tell you all the things About colorado. Everything,
- 24:50Speaker 5: oh it's so tough to. Recover it's all this stuff
- 24:54Speaker 5: when you got there and you finally got to play
- 24:56Speaker 5: in your first big league game In, colorado, which by the,
- 24:59Speaker 5: WAY i wrote it down your big league player number
- 25:02Speaker 5: twenty three, thousand six hundred and twenty four to ever
- 25:05Speaker 5: step foot on the. Field so not that you're gonna
- 25:08Speaker 5: remember that or get a tattoo of that, number but you.
- 25:10Speaker 3: Should but, yeah talk.
- 25:12Speaker 5: About playing In colorado compared to the friendly confines OF
- 25:17Speaker 5: Pnc park up In Scranton.
- 25:20Speaker 3: Wilkesbury, YEAH i mean that is a huge.
- 25:24Speaker 8: JUMP i you, KNOW i think my Manager Shelley duncan
- 25:28Speaker 8: there And scranton would say the, same just trying to
- 25:31Speaker 8: like but the preparations the, same even though the exterior
- 25:37Speaker 8: and all the fans are are. There and that's that's
- 25:40Speaker 8: that's fun and. Nice it's you, know you still kind
- 25:43Speaker 8: of focus on the, game the, pitches the pitchers that's coming,
- 25:46Speaker 8: in you, know all the things in.
- 25:48Speaker 6: Order to be a successful baseball. Player it's you kind.
- 25:50Speaker 8: Of learned that at THE p AND C park In,
- 25:52Speaker 8: scranton how to be a big leaguer and it's kind
- 25:57Speaker 8: of working.
- 25:57Speaker 6: Out, HEY.
- 26:00Speaker 1: TJ i wanted to take you back to course field
- 26:03Speaker 1: for a. Moment there was a viral moment last, night
- 26:06Speaker 1: AND i was just wondering if you called on all
- 26:08Speaker 1: your friends to start a party section deep in the
- 26:12Speaker 1: outfield in the upper. Deck did you see this little
- 26:15Speaker 1: party from where you were during the game or was
- 26:18Speaker 1: it something you caught after the. Game i'm guessing you
- 26:20Speaker 1: can't really miss it despite trying to be as locked
- 26:23Speaker 1: in as.
- 26:23Speaker 6: Possible, no it was kind of. HARD i mean when
- 26:28Speaker 6: you're looking up.
- 26:29Speaker 8: There they started off as like a small, GROUP i,
- 26:31Speaker 8: think and then every TIME i looked up. THERE i
- 26:34Speaker 8: must have looked up there maybe three or four times after,
- 26:37Speaker 8: that and they just kept on multiplying and multiplying. It
- 26:39Speaker 8: and it was kind of refreshing to see that these,
- 26:42Speaker 8: fans you, know they still want to, win they still
- 26:44Speaker 8: care about The, rockies and you, know they took their
- 26:47Speaker 8: shirts off for.
- 26:48Speaker 6: It so that was that was.
- 26:51Speaker 4: Amazing it looked, like you, know a football kind of
- 26:55Speaker 4: thing with those kind of. Fans BUT i want to
- 26:56Speaker 4: talk a little about Your yankee, experience you, know talk
- 27:00Speaker 4: a little about sharing first base With Ben rice and
- 27:02Speaker 4: you know how you learn from all?
- 27:03Speaker 8: This, yeah, Dude ben Is ben is a great hitter
- 27:08Speaker 8: and even better first, baseman better, person better. Teammate can't
- 27:13Speaker 8: have you, know enough good things to say about that.
- 27:16Speaker 8: Guy coming up through the minor leagues with The, yankees
- 27:20Speaker 8: it was just always their philosophy was hit strikes, hard
- 27:23Speaker 8: AND i think that was that was refreshing for me
- 27:26Speaker 8: BECAUSE i could hit, STRIKES i just couldn't hit them very.
- 27:29Speaker 8: Hard so for them they're playing with me was to,
- 27:32Speaker 8: just you, know do, that keep it simple and hit
- 27:36Speaker 8: it hard and working with the hitting coaches there and
- 27:40Speaker 8: the sports you, know science and all the things that
- 27:43Speaker 8: they have as The yankees and developing. Players they do
- 27:46Speaker 8: a great job of, that AND i took advantage of
- 27:50Speaker 8: every single bit of, IT i, think AND i think
- 27:52Speaker 8: it's working.
- 27:52Speaker 3: Out, WAIT.
- 27:54Speaker 5: TJ i have to keep it real because people listen
- 27:59Speaker 5: to this show because they want to hear a player's
- 28:01Speaker 5: point of. View you were not twenty one years old
- 28:04Speaker 5: when you made your big league. Debut you were in
- 28:06Speaker 5: the minor. Leagues Ben rice was a. Catcher when you
- 28:09Speaker 5: See Ben, rice you're in the minor leagues and you
- 28:11Speaker 5: See Ben, rice a guy you were playing around at first.
- 28:15Speaker 5: Base move to first base and take advantage of that.
- 28:19Speaker 5: Opportunity you can be happy for him because of the
- 28:21Speaker 5: guy he, Is but how hard is that as a
- 28:25Speaker 5: first basement only in the minor. LEAGUES i looked up
- 28:28Speaker 5: your stat you didn't play any other position but first,
- 28:30Speaker 5: base and you're, like wait a, MINUTE i hit seventeen home.
- 28:33Speaker 5: RUNS i hit fifteen home. RUNS i hit sixteen home
- 28:36Speaker 5: runs in back to back. YEARS i hit almost three
- 28:40Speaker 5: hundred every year in the last three seasons in the minor,
- 28:42Speaker 5: Leagues and.
- 28:44Speaker 3: Why AM i not getting that?
- 28:45Speaker 5: Opportunity because very few people ever see that side of the.
- 28:49Speaker 5: Game i'd love to hear your feeling as far as
- 28:53Speaker 5: and then they didn't keep you on the forty man,
- 28:55Speaker 5: roster and now you're getting your. Opportunity but take us
- 28:58Speaker 5: through those times when you're like this, sucks LIKE i
- 29:01Speaker 5: WANT i want this bad And i've done EVERYTHING i.
- 29:03Speaker 8: Can, YEAH i think it's just something that LIKE i
- 29:08Speaker 8: just you, know just NOTHING i can. Control SO i
- 29:12Speaker 8: don't really try to work on it or like really
- 29:16Speaker 8: feel any sort of way about it BECAUSE i can't control,
- 29:19Speaker 8: it you, KNOW i can just try to put my
- 29:23Speaker 8: best foot. Forward AND i think that's WHAT i like
- 29:25Speaker 8: tried to do in the minor leagues was just you,
- 29:27Speaker 8: KNOW i had good, years but it was always LIKE
- 29:29Speaker 8: i could be better Because i'm seeing these Other i'm
- 29:31Speaker 8: seeing the underlying data And i'm seeing that like, okay
- 29:34Speaker 8: Like i'm getting lucky AND i could be, Better like
- 29:38Speaker 8: how CAN i get?
- 29:38Speaker 6: Better that sort of.
- 29:39Speaker 8: Thing it wasn't necessarily like OH i need TO i
- 29:43Speaker 8: need to BE i should be in.
- 29:44Speaker 6: The big leagues or or any of.
- 29:47Speaker 8: That it was, like it kind of makes me hungrier
- 29:50Speaker 8: to get better at this, game because IF i was
- 29:52Speaker 8: JUST i wouldn't necessarily say you've ever given anything in this.
- 29:56Speaker 8: Game but it kind of just you, know turned a
- 29:59Speaker 8: fire on in my belly and just LITTLE i mean
- 30:02Speaker 8: little spark in me to try to get better.
- 30:04Speaker 6: At this game to the HIGHEST i, mean to the
- 30:07Speaker 6: highest level. POSSIBLE i love.
- 30:09Speaker 5: THAT i love that because so many people that make
- 30:12Speaker 5: the big leagues never go through any adversity until they
- 30:15Speaker 5: get to the big. Leagues while you had success in
- 30:18Speaker 5: the minor, leagues that was kind of your, adversity like
- 30:21Speaker 5: why is this guy not getting a? Shot he keeps
- 30:23Speaker 5: hitting dingers out of a absolutely Massive park In, scranton
- 30:27Speaker 5: and he's still not getting a. Shot So i'm glad
- 30:29Speaker 5: you finally got your. Shot talk about how to. Dude,
- 30:32Speaker 5: now MAYBE i have my timeline, wrong but talk about
- 30:34Speaker 5: how a dude From texas gets To Virginia tech to play?
- 30:38Speaker 6: Baseball, YEAH i. WAS i was actually gonna touch on that.
- 30:43Speaker 8: TOO i, started like my adversity started off At Texas.
- 30:46Speaker 6: TECH i red. SHIRTED i didn't even play a year in.
- 30:49Speaker 8: Twenty, nineteen or didn't even play a pitch in twenty.
- 30:52Speaker 8: NINETEEN i sat and watched the whole entire year just
- 30:55Speaker 8: BECAUSE i wasn't wasn't good enough to. Play SO i
- 31:00Speaker 8: had to sit there and watch baseball and had to
- 31:02Speaker 8: get better at baseball without. Playing and that was kind
- 31:05Speaker 8: of the first major roadblock in my career was in
- 31:08Speaker 8: twenty nineteen trying to figure, Out, Okay i'm not on the,
- 31:10Speaker 8: field how DO i get better at this? Game Because
- 31:13Speaker 8: division one baseball it's when, now when? Now not developed,
- 31:17Speaker 8: Players so that that kind of kicked started, that and
- 31:23Speaker 8: then twenty TWENTY i kind of got my opportunity there
- 31:26Speaker 8: BEFORE covid hit AND i hit four hundred there and
- 31:30Speaker 8: just still wasn't getting to play every, day AND i was,
- 31:32Speaker 8: LIKE i need to go play every single. Game and
- 31:35Speaker 8: Coach John chef From Virginia tech gave me a shout
- 31:40Speaker 8: and he never looked. Back he said THAT i would
- 31:43Speaker 8: play every day and he kept his, word AND i
- 31:48Speaker 8: told HIM I i told HIM i drive in some
- 31:50Speaker 8: runs and he told ME i play every day and
- 31:52Speaker 8: we just both kept our promise and look at where
- 31:55Speaker 8: we are.
