- 0:00SPEAKER_00: Here in the gospel,
- 0:00SPEAKER_00: we have Herod being drawn to Jesus,
- 0:05SPEAKER_00: but for something of the same reason,
- 0:06SPEAKER_00: I think that many people are fascinated by rumors of miraculous things
- 0:10SPEAKER_00: or happenings out of a sort of curiosity.
- 0:15SPEAKER_00: Out of a desire for novelty, a desire to see something strange and exciting.
- 0:23SPEAKER_00: And what Padre Pio says is what Jesus might say to Herod as well,
- 0:28SPEAKER_00: that I have no interest outside of sanctifying your soul.
- 0:34SPEAKER_00: So why would these things even happen?
- 0:37SPEAKER_00: I mean, the reason why Herod wants to see Jesus is because all these miraculous
- 0:41SPEAKER_00: and strange things are happening around him.
- 0:44SPEAKER_00: Why do miracles happen?
- 0:45SPEAKER_00: Why did miracles happen around Jesus?
- 0:47SPEAKER_00: Why do they happen around people who are holy, people who are with God?
- 0:53SPEAKER_00: It's because they're meant to take us to God.
- 0:57SPEAKER_00: And even more than that, they're meant to show us the way that reality is.
- 1:04SPEAKER_00: It's only in our strange modern world that we don't understand this,
- 1:09SPEAKER_00: although in a way we're similar to Herod.
- 1:12SPEAKER_00: But in our modern world, there's no place for wonder.
- 1:15SPEAKER_00: There's no place for the supernatural because we have everything figured out.
- 1:19SPEAKER_00: We have everything reasoned away.
- 1:22SPEAKER_00: We have this illusion that we understand everything that happens in the world.
- 1:26SPEAKER_00: We can describe it mathematically.
- 1:28SPEAKER_00: Therefore, there's no more wonder.
- 1:32SPEAKER_00: There's no more miracle.
- 1:34SPEAKER_00: There's no more, you know, any amazingness to it because it's all sort of mundane and material.
- 1:42SPEAKER_00: It's a very materialistic and basically a functionally atheistic way of looking at
- 1:46SPEAKER_00: the world that we all basically buy into because it's the culture in which we live,
- 1:51SPEAKER_00: but it is not the truth.
- 1:53SPEAKER_00: And this is C.S.
- 1:54SPEAKER_00: Lewis makes this point in his essay on miracles,
- 1:58SPEAKER_00: where he says,
- 1:58SPEAKER_00: you know, sure,
- 1:59SPEAKER_00: you know,
- 1:59SPEAKER_00: it says in the Bible that there are things that Jesus did like turning water
- 2:03SPEAKER_00: into wine.
- 2:04SPEAKER_00: He said every year,
- 2:06SPEAKER_00: great vines draw up water from the earth and Inside of themselves,
- 2:11SPEAKER_00: they transform it into fruit and that fruit is then fermented and transformed
- 2:16SPEAKER_00: into wines throughout the world.
- 2:18SPEAKER_00: We see the miracle of water turning into wine.
- 2:21SPEAKER_00: We see the miracle of bread being multiplied.
- 2:24SPEAKER_00: We see the miracle of something coming from nothing.
- 2:27SPEAKER_00: The whole world is miraculous and amazing and fantastic.
- 2:32SPEAKER_00: And why should there be something rather than nothing?
- 2:35SPEAKER_00: And why should there be plants that do the amazing things that they do or the stars?
- 2:42SPEAKER_00: All of these things are shot through with wonder and with the presence of God
- 2:48SPEAKER_00: and are trying to communicate that to us.
- 2:50SPEAKER_00: And the reason why there are these little miracles is to remind us of
- 2:53SPEAKER_00: the big miracle,
- 2:55SPEAKER_00: which is the amazing miracle of existence,
- 2:58SPEAKER_00: the miracle that we all live every day and that we take for granted,
- 3:02SPEAKER_00: that we think, that we understand.
- 3:04SPEAKER_00: And there's certain moments in life where we're confronted with Death or
- 3:08SPEAKER_00: when we're confronted with tragedy or certain things that will break us out of that
- 3:13SPEAKER_00: and make us turn to God because they show us there must be something else.
- 3:19SPEAKER_00: What's going on here?
- 3:19SPEAKER_00: We can't just reduce this to the material, but yet usually we live in that way.
- 3:25SPEAKER_00: We live without that awareness.
- 3:28SPEAKER_00: So Herod in the Gospel is simply curious.
- 3:32SPEAKER_00: We ourselves are often tempted to be curious.
- 3:35SPEAKER_00: The people who came to see Padre Pio were curious.
- 3:39SPEAKER_00: Curiosity can be good or bad.
- 3:41SPEAKER_00: It's not in itself one or the other, but it is not necessarily good.
- 3:46SPEAKER_00: And the Lord doesn't want us to be merely curious.
- 3:51SPEAKER_00: The Lord wants to break us out of our mundane and ordinary way of being and
- 3:57SPEAKER_00: to bring us into wonder, into contemplation, to bring God into everything.
- 4:05SPEAKER_00: Whenever we see anything,
- 4:07SPEAKER_00: We can be tempted to be curious about it, but it's like Herod as well.
- 4:12SPEAKER_00: We're thinking about things in terms of our sounds.
- 4:14SPEAKER_00: It's like, ooh, that I think is kind of cool.
- 4:16SPEAKER_00: I want to see that.
- 4:17SPEAKER_00: And Herod is the same.
- 4:18SPEAKER_00: He's like, oh, you know, I'm kind of bored.
- 4:20SPEAKER_00: You know, let's see.
- 4:20SPEAKER_00: Who are the wonder workers who are around these days?
- 4:23SPEAKER_00: Bring them in.
- 4:24SPEAKER_00: Let's see what they have to offer.
- 4:27SPEAKER_00: Because he was thinking about the world in terms of himself.
- 4:30SPEAKER_00: What can I get from it?
- 4:32SPEAKER_00: And that is exactly the opposite of wonder.
- 4:35SPEAKER_00: We can do the same thing,
- 4:37SPEAKER_00: thinking that we understand, thinking that we have control over life and we do not.
- 4:44SPEAKER_00: What we are called to do is to bring God into everything.
- 4:47SPEAKER_00: When I see anything,
- 4:49SPEAKER_00: when I see a person,
- 4:51SPEAKER_00: when I see a tree,
- 4:52SPEAKER_00: when I see the sky,
- 4:53SPEAKER_00: when I see these beautiful autumn days to say,
- 4:57SPEAKER_00: God, how amazing this is, how wonderful.
- 5:01SPEAKER_00: How beautiful.
- 5:01SPEAKER_00: It takes away any temptation to vain curiosity to put myself to just be trying
- 5:05SPEAKER_00: to get things for people.
- 5:07SPEAKER_00: Oh, I like this person because they're attracted to me.
- 5:09SPEAKER_00: I don't like that person because they're not attracted to me.
- 5:12SPEAKER_00: Whereas when I bring God into the conversation, there's a whole new level.
- 5:15SPEAKER_00: Wow.
- 5:16SPEAKER_00: It's amazing.
- 5:18SPEAKER_00: That person is alive.
- 5:19SPEAKER_00: That's incredible.
- 5:21SPEAKER_00: The world is a beautiful place.
- 5:23SPEAKER_00: Thank you.
- 5:24SPEAKER_00: Thank you, God, for all of this.
- 5:26SPEAKER_00: That's the solution that Christ is trying to teach us.
- 5:29SPEAKER_00: That's what the miracles are here to remind us.
- 5:34SPEAKER_00: Today we celebrate the Eucharist.
- 5:35SPEAKER_00: Christ comes to us in bread and wine and reminds us that all bread and wine,
- 5:44SPEAKER_00: all the good things of this earth communicate to us his presence.
- 5:49SPEAKER_00: And today we have that intensified in a particular way.
- 5:51SPEAKER_00: Just ask for that grace today to bring God together.
- 5:55SPEAKER_00: Into everything and as we receive him into our lives to bring him around us
- 6:03SPEAKER_00: to all those we encounter.
