- 0:03Hour number two, welcome back, It's Millerin Condon on the Iowa
- 0:06Sports Radio Network. We're with you until 2:00.
- 0:10Coming up this hour, we're going to take a look at three of our
- 0:12regional NFL team schedules of course have come out a
- 0:15momentarily Den Mazatani. We're also going to pick his
- 0:18brain on the T Wolves as he was in attendance last night for the
- 0:21clincher as they move on to the Western Conference final.
- 0:24We'll talk Vikings first, then the Packers with Dave Sinican,
- 0:28KFAN and Zone coverage.com, and then Nick Athen, Chiefs
- 0:32blitz.com on the Kansas City Chiefs.
- 0:35We'll talk to him at about 1:30. Let's get to
- 0:37danemazatanitwincities.com. Saint Paul Pioneer Press, How
- 0:41are you? Dane Trenton, Ken, thank you for
- 0:43coming on. Good to talk to you.
- 0:45Yeah, always good to talk to y'all guys.
- 0:47I guess we've got to save some time for hoops, but let's start
- 0:50with the schedule first of all. And I guess the one thing that
- 0:53jumps off to everybody is the back-to-back games over across
- 0:56the pond. They do I guess avoid 2 road
- 1:00games because they would have I think had to have gone to
- 1:03Pittsburgh and had to gone to Cleveland.
- 1:05But they'll play one of them in Pittsburgh and Ireland, the
- 1:07other one in Believe in London. Just your thoughts on that?
- 1:11Something that's never done before.
- 1:13Are the Vikings embracing this challenge, do you think, Dave?
- 1:18Yeah, I think they are. I think when you look at what
- 1:21the Vikings have been able to do as far as connecting with the
- 1:26fan base across the pond, they have a pretty cult following in
- 1:30London. And this is just an opportunity
- 1:32to take that cult following from London, England and apply it to
- 1:36Dublin, Ireland. And I think they really looked
- 1:39at this as an opportunity to just kind of grow their brand
- 1:42while also kind of setting themselves up because they
- 1:46believe so strongly and in their support system.
- 1:50You hear them talk all the time about their medical staff, their
- 1:52their athletic training staff, their, their operation staff.
- 1:56Do they feel equipped to deal with something like this?
- 2:00So I think they're looking at it more as an opportunity and less
- 2:03as a as a daunting task that they have to overcome.
- 2:07And then you mentioned it. Look, they get to play the AFC
- 2:10North in full and not play one through Rd. game.
- 2:13They get to host the, you know, Joe Burrow and the Cincinnati
- 2:17Bengals at home, Lamar Jackson and the Baltimore Ravens at
- 2:19home. And then you avoid Pittsburgh,
- 2:22you avoid Cleveland. I know those teams might look on
- 2:25paper to be down this year, but if you can avoid going to
- 2:28Pittsburgh, going to Cleveland, I think that's just a small
- 2:32bonus for the Vikings as well. And it's crazy to think they're
- 2:35only going to have, what, one true Rd. game through the first
- 2:37seven weeks of the season? Now, of course, two of them
- 2:40across the pond. But true Rd. games?
- 2:42They're different. As we know, even in the NFL, the
- 2:44home field advantage isn't 1 once it once was.
- 2:46Well, that means that back end of the schedule, what it does,
- 2:49starting at Green Bay, at Seattle Rd. trips to Dallas, New
- 2:54York. You do that gauntlet over A5
- 2:57week period, four true Rd. games on the back end, suddenly it
- 3:01gets much more difficult. Does it feel to you, Dane, that
- 3:04this team's going to have to make some hay early if they're
- 3:06chasing a playoff bid? They better have a lot of that
- 3:08hay in the barn. I think so to a degree, yeah.
- 3:12I think the the end of your schedule, it certainly doesn't
- 3:16set up favorably in terms of just being on the road.
- 3:20I also think because you play, you know, back-to-back across
- 3:24the pond, you're you're by coming in week 6.
- 3:28That gets tough when when you ask the team to play 1314 weeks
- 3:32in a row down the stretch here. If you're assuming they get to
- 3:35the playoffs, which which I know they want to.
- 3:38So it's going to be tough. I think you got to make, like
- 3:40you said, hey, where the sun shines early and then hope that
- 3:44can kind of buoy you down the stretch in the regular season.
- 3:48But look at the way the season closes as well.
- 3:52You're going to be tested Detroit Lions on Christmas,
- 3:55Green Bay Packers as as the season finale.
- 3:58With how close the NFC North figures to be, I would assume
- 4:02that those are going to be super, super impactful games
- 4:05that could just swing playoff positioning as a whole.
- 4:08Yeah, I couldn't agree with you more.
- 4:09I don't think there's a free square amongst the four teams in
- 4:12the North. Incredibly competitive is how I
- 4:16see it. Well, just one more back from a,
- 4:18from, from your perspective, how will the Saint Paul Pioneer
- 4:21Press, will they send different, will they keep one guy out there
- 4:25the entire couple of weeks? That's a, that's a big ask for,
- 4:28you know, family guys, etcetera. What?
- 4:30How are you guys going to cover the Pittsburgh and Cleveland
- 4:33games? One in Ireland, one in London?
- 4:36That is a fantastic question. We are trying to figure out
- 4:38those logistics right now. It's going to be a pretty
- 4:42expensive road trip. I don't know if we'll go
- 4:45honestly like it. It might be one of those where
- 4:48you just kind of have to take the owl and then understand that
- 4:52while I would love to go cover a game in Dublin, I would love to
- 4:55go after that and cover a game in in in London.
- 4:58It just might not make sense fiscally, but we're going to try
- 5:01to make it happen. Maybe I'll pay a little bit on
- 5:05my own way and maybe y'all could chip in too and then send me to
- 5:08something. Yeah.
- 5:09Make it happen. Yeah, make it happen.
- 5:11I like that date. Anything else schedule wise,
- 5:14jump out here. Anything that we haven't touched
- 5:16on that you thought was impactful overall?
- 5:19I, I, I do think opening right, right away on the road Monday
- 5:23Night Football against the Chicago Bears.
- 5:26You know, JJ McCarthy kind of going home, grew up in La
- 5:29Grange, IL, getting to test himself right away against Caleb
- 5:32Williams, the number one pick in his draft.
- 5:35Then also Kevin O'Connell, the offensive genius, going against
- 5:39Ben Johnson, the offensive genius.
- 5:40I think there's a lot of intrigue in that match up.
- 5:43And I think frankly, like we just talked about, the NFC North
- 5:47is going to be so tough this year.
- 5:49That will be a good measuring stick both for the Vikings, for
- 5:52the Bears and whoever wins that game will put themselves in
- 5:56better standing moving forward. So I I think that's a cool one
- 5:59right off the bat. Just throw them in into the kind
- 6:03of the spotlight. Throw JJ McCarthy into the deep
- 6:05end of the pool. Also a lot of prime time game.
- 6:08That's what happens when when you win 14 games and and you
- 6:11have JJ McCarthy in the on all the entry that comes with him.
- 6:14So there's a lot of interest in this team and there absolutely
- 6:17should be. I think there's as hard as the
- 6:20schedule sets up to be on paper, I think the Vikings.
- 6:24Yeah, I'm with you and I love the fact that they're playing
- 6:26Monday Night Football. The whole league is watching, as
- 6:28you know, on Monday night and JJ gets to go up against Williams
- 6:32from the same draft, etcetera. The thing about McCarthy and I,
- 6:35I get he hasn't played in a long time, but it's not like he
- 6:38hasn't played under the brightest of lights, you know,
- 6:41back in college. So we'll see how I'm I'm a
- 6:43believer. I am.
- 6:45We'll we'll see how it goes at this point, some hoops
- 6:48conversation trends as we switch.
- 6:50Look, it was if you're if you're a Golden State Warriors fan, it
- 6:54kind of feels like this might be the end of this run that this
- 6:58franchise has put together. Age catches up with everybody.
- 7:02Obviously, we know Steph Curry couldn't play, but it it seems
- 7:07as maybe a changing of the guard moment is how I was watching it.
- 7:11Did it feel like that to you that there's a new kid in town
- 7:14kind of thing? And there are the Minnesota
- 7:16Timberwolves, granted, who played in the Western Conference
- 7:19final last year. But it seems more real this
- 7:21year, at least to. It does.
- 7:23It does. I do think the whole passing of
- 7:26the torch, changing of the guard was a little bit dampened by the
- 7:29fact that Steph Curry goes down in game one.
- 7:32I know Anthony Edwards, that guy is as competitive as they come.
- 7:35After beating LeBron James and Luka Doncic in the Los Angeles
- 7:39Lakers in round one, there's nothing more that he wanted to
- 7:42do. Then follow that up by beating
- 7:45Steph Curry in the Golden State Warriors in round two.
- 7:48And while the Wolves beat the Warriors and did not get the
- 7:52chance to kind of go head to head with Steph Curry.
- 7:54So I think that's meat left on the ball and motivation moving
- 7:57forward and frankly kind of takes the series and then you
- 8:00really suck the air out of it right from the start.
- 8:03But when you look at just the encapsulation of the
- 8:05Timberwolves, you're absolutely right.
- 8:07This is they're not just this team that that's fun to be
- 8:12around and oh wow, look, they have that.
- 8:13They're an exciting group. They're legitimate contenders.
- 8:16And then I think they're going to be legitimate contenders for
- 8:19quite some time. I think Chris Finch summed it up
- 8:23fast after after the game, we talked to him, posting him and
- 8:27he said, look, it came down to one question.
- 8:29We challenged our guys at the start of the year, are you a
- 8:33Western Conference finals team? Are you, were you a team that
- 8:36just happened to get to the Western Conference?
- 8:38Fine. And last year we didn't know
- 8:41they, they, you know, they, they came back, they, they dominated
- 8:44down the stretch in the Denver series and ended up winning in
- 8:46seven and kind of went down quietly in Dallas.
- 8:49So there were question marks entering this season, enough
- 8:52that Tim Conley pulled the trigger on a pretty big trade on
- 8:55the eve of training camp. So were they a Western
- 8:58Conference Finals team or were they a team that just happened
- 9:01to get to the Western Conference Finals?
- 9:03We know the answer now. They're a Western Conference
- 9:05Finals team. They are a team that absolutely
- 9:07can win the NBA title. And it sounds a little funny
- 9:10thing that with all the futility that that this franchise has
- 9:14endured, but. They're for real.
- 9:18Julius Randall has been tremendous and on one team's
- 9:22problem with the Knicks, another team's problem with the T Wolves
- 9:24and they flip flop. Randall, though, is a pending
- 9:27free agent. Any idea going forward?
- 9:29I mean, you kind of look at these windows and they close
- 9:32quickly in all kinds of sports. Is the window right now for the
- 9:35Timberwolves knowing that Nas, Reed, Julius Randall, those guys
- 9:38are free agents after this year? Yeah, I think the window is is
- 9:42now. But I also think with what
- 9:45you've seen the the team as a whole put together and
- 9:48particularly what you've seen out of Julius Randolph, I would
- 9:52assume he opts out of the contract because he's earned
- 9:54himself more money that I think opting in, which would garner
- 9:58him with, with the way he's played in the playoffs.
- 10:00But if he were to opt out to negotiate a larger deal, I would
- 10:05be pretty surprised at this point if the 10 rule did not
- 10:07come to the table with something.
- 10:09And I, I think the way the NBA salary cap works, you can go
- 10:13over the cap in certain situations.
- 10:17If you have guys right, certain convoluted things with the
- 10:21contract, they can exceed that. There's two salary caps to keep
- 10:25Julius Randall around. They would just have to dip into
- 10:27the luxury packs. That'd be a pretty penny for
- 10:30Mark Laurie and and Alex Rodriguez to pay.
- 10:33But it's worth it because I think what you've seen is that
- 10:35Julius Randall, as crazy as it sounds, might be the best #2
- 10:40left in the playoffs. He has taken a step forward this
- 10:43year. He has gone from a punching bag
- 10:45punchline that all the fans used against him early in this season
- 10:49to a guy nobody really wanted, a guy that that he thought was
- 10:54just going to kind of be in town for a year and move on to, I
- 10:57think a foundational piece of what this franchise is going to
- 11:01try and do moving forward. I wrote it yesterday.
- 11:04If Anthony Edwards is Batman, Julius Randall is Robin, and
- 11:08that might not be giving him enough credit because he's been
- 11:11a superhero himself in the playoffs.
- 11:14We can get you out of here on this.
- 11:15And Trenches brought it up during the break and he was down
- 11:17in the dumps. And I understand why the twins
- 11:20are playing so well. And then I guess the game in
- 11:24Baltimore, Korea, and Buxton collided.
- 11:27They banged heads. They both had to leave the game.
- 11:31How twins like, I guess we'll put it that way, Dane.
- 11:34Hey, hey, I know it does seem like you're waiting for the
- 11:39other shoe to drop 10 games in a row.
- 11:42They're back maybe. I think they're winning right
- 11:44now in Baltimore, too. They did the same thing last
- 11:47year. And hey, if they can string
- 11:50together as winning streak and at least be relevant in the AL
- 11:52Centro, that's all we really hope for in the summer.
- 11:56And then hopefully they don't collapse down the stretch.
- 11:58But I think hopefully those two are OK.
- 12:01And hopefully, you know, health can can be on their side.
- 12:03It certainly wasn't last year. Danemazatanitwincities.com,
- 12:07Saint Paul Pioneer Press, We will run you down during the
- 12:10Western Conference final and then the NBA final.
- 12:12How's that for confidence, Dane? Thank you, buddy.
- 12:15Appreciate it as always. Thanks, Dane.
- 12:17Yep, anytime guys. Good to talk to you, Dane
- 12:19Mazatani, St. Paul Pioneer Press.
- 12:22Here's Dave Sinican. He covers the Packers and talks
- 12:25about the Packers on the radio Sunday morning, game day, Sunday
- 12:28morning. Packer preview.com.
- 12:30Into your #30 Dave goes Zone Coverage is where you can read
- 12:33his thoughts on the Green Bay Packers, and he's with us,
- 12:36Miller and Condon. How are you, Dave Sinican?
- 12:39I'm good, Ken. How are you guys?
- 12:40Doing well. Appreciate you giving us a few
- 12:42minutes here. Let's just pick up because I
- 12:43know you're a big basketball fan in your Saturday morning show on
- 12:46Cafe and is there's a lot of NBA talking.
- 12:49It's just your thoughts on what the Timberwolves are doing.
- 12:51And before we get into the Packers schedule, does it feel
- 12:54maybe more legit this year than last year, Dave?
- 12:58Yeah, You know, maybe so when you can back it up a second
- 13:01straight year, I think it feels like it's not Lucas, you know,
- 13:04to get your first one in 20 odd years.
- 13:06But I just think there's a real sense of satisfaction from the
- 13:09organization and now from the fan base after the stunning
- 13:13trade on the eve of the season opener that everybody questioned
- 13:17how could you break up a team that got into the final four?
- 13:20And you know, they really kind of kicked themselves around most
- 13:23of the season until March when everything clicked, when Randall
- 13:27clicked and even Chenzo, those, the guys got healthy and we saw
- 13:30what might be possible. And when you have a leader like
- 13:33Ants, you know, a young superstar like Ants and then a
- 13:36guy like Randall, who was the big X Factor heading into the
- 13:38postseason, delivering beyond what anybody could have dreamed.
- 13:42Yeah, it it feels like this is a legit team with championship
- 13:45aspirations. But man, that OK C team is going
- 13:48to be a pretty tough one if that's who they face back.
- 13:51Yeah, just concerned how they score.
- 13:53You know, this team has not played even going 8 and two in
- 13:55the playoffs so far. Doesn't feel like they've hit
- 13:58their apex offensively throughout the opening 10 games
- 14:01of the NBA playoffs. And OK, C, their defense, what
- 14:04it leaves me concerned how they're going to score against
- 14:06that team. How do you see it, Dave, if we
- 14:08get that? Yeah, well, I mean, first of
- 14:10all, they have to take care of the basketball.
- 14:12I mean, 20 plus turnovers the last three games, that's not
- 14:15going to work against the team like OK, C and when they split
- 14:18the four games during the season, but you know, oddly
- 14:20enough, they never faced them fully healthy. 3 of the games
- 14:25fell like over a 10 day stretch in February where Randall and
- 14:28Gobert both missed all three of those games.
- 14:30And I think Holmgren may have missed one or two of the four as
- 14:33well. So you really haven't seen these
- 14:35two teams fully healthy. But yeah, it's a fair first
- 14:39question. They're going to need Jade
- 14:41McDaniels, who has flashed to be that #3 offensive option.
- 14:45And really, you know, the Wolves technically go as far as Nas and
- 14:49Dante can carry them. When those guys are hitting
- 14:52their shots and being really strong off the bench, then
- 14:55Minnesota is tough to beat. But they've both struggled
- 14:58throughout these playoffs. They haven't been as consistent.
- 15:00I think that's a good sign. I don't think they've come close
- 15:03to tapping where they can be offensively, but if those guys
- 15:07are back, they'll be a tough out no matter who they face that's
- 15:10round. Well, let's get to the Packers
- 15:11in their schedule. And when I looked at it
- 15:13yesterday, as I looked at most of the teams in the NFC North
- 15:17when the schedule came, I can't get enough of it.
- 15:19I love schedule. Review Day.
- 15:21It's just so much fun, right? I hear Dan Patrick and his
- 15:24little moment about W&L lead. Let me have my fun, damn it.
- 15:28But anyways, I think it's pretty favorable for Green Bay at
- 15:31least, you know, early in that schedule, maybe until they get
- 15:35to into November with the start of the home game against
- 15:39Minnesota, the water seemingly melt.
- 15:40You know, they got Philly a couple of weeks before that on
- 15:43Monday Night Football. But I thought it was pretty
- 15:45favorable. How about you, Dave?
- 15:47Well, I don't love it, to be honest.
- 15:50It's nice that they open at home for the first time in the Mat
- 15:52Lafleur era since 2018. They've opened on the road every
- 15:56year. So to open at home is nice.
- 15:58But then we've got to face Jayden Daniels four days later.
- 16:01I mean, you've got two games of right off the bat and then you
- 16:05go on the road for two and then an early bye week 5 is earlier
- 16:09than I would like for Green Bay. I think what stands out the most
- 16:12of me guys is you know, this team this year is all about
- 16:16getting back to being dominant within the division.
- 16:18They were a kicks field goal away from the block field goal
- 16:22away from going O1 6th in the division last year.
- 16:24So this year's team is going to really be judged by how they do
- 16:28in the NFC North and they they open against Detroit and then
- 16:31they don't play a division game until that Vikings game the
- 16:33Sunday before Thanksgiving and none of their Rd. division games
- 16:38even hit until Thanksgiving Day. So it's really back loaded,
- 16:43three of the last four who are on the road with the Baltimore
- 16:46game likely in prime time in between.
- 16:49I think the once the Vikings get here November 23rd, you look at
- 16:53those last 6-7 games, almost all division games, they go to your
- 16:56Broncos and they have the Ravens at home.
- 16:58Otherwise they're all division games.
- 17:00So I guess me big picture, we're not going to know much what we
- 17:04have with this team until Thanksgiving dinner.
- 17:08I'll know a lot more about this team after that game against
- 17:10Detroit. Following up the Vikings game, a
- 17:14little back loaded for my taste. But yeah, All in all that
- 17:18horrible 32 game Rd. trips, they only had one last season and one
- 17:22trip. They got to go to Arizona one
- 17:23week and then find a Pittsburgh next.
- 17:26So I don't know, it's just kind of sneaky tricky at the way I
- 17:29looked at it the first blush. You know the Thanksgiving game
- 17:32this is for both of you. But it's not.
- 17:34It's not, you know that critical to the grand scheme of thing.
- 17:38But didn't the early game used to start at 11:30?
- 17:40Yeah, they announced that right about a month ago.
- 17:42Did they announce? That I didn't know that I
- 17:44thought so. I thought me, my you losing your
- 17:46mind, Miller. But it's noon, which is neither
- 17:48here nor there. But anyways, go ahead, Trent.
- 17:50Sorry, No, no, push it back a little bit.
- 17:51Well, Dave, you know where my eyes raced.
- 17:53And of course it was the two matchups against my Bears. 2
- 17:56games in three weeks, actually, two games in 13 days.
- 17:59The way that it's scheduled with the Saturday game on the back
- 18:02half of that. I just hate that I it doesn't
- 18:04matter the opponent. Divisional games, there needs to
- 18:06be some kind of separation. Twice in three weeks doesn't
- 18:09make sense to me. How about you?
- 18:11Yeah, I feel the same way. I don't like it.
- 18:13I'd like to have one earlier and one later.
- 18:15But like Green Bay has with both the Vikings and the Lions of a
- 18:18lot, I guess the bikes come somewhat late.
- 18:20But yeah, it's really unusual. You do see it from time to time
- 18:24in other division matchups. I can't remember ever playing
- 18:28the Bears twice in a three weeks or as you say, within 13 days.
- 18:32So yeah, it's unusual. I don't think it's ideal, but
- 18:35you know, I don't think there's an advantage either way.
- 18:36Both teams have to deal with it. It's just, I think from a fan
- 18:39perspective, it's it's just not ideal.
- 18:42Have you looked at Detroit's road schedule, Dave?
- 18:45Yeah, it's brutal. Unbelievable.
- 18:48Yeah. I mean, my God, if they get
- 18:50through that and they read they find their way to the top of the
- 18:54NFC North again, they will have earned it.
- 18:56Is the is it going to be as many wins, I guess.
- 19:00I mean, the Vikings, what do they have, 14 or whatever it was
- 19:03last year, 15 for the Lions? I mean, is that what we're
- 19:06looking at again? Or maybe does the division
- 19:08winner, you know, maybe have 12 or 13 because it seems to me
- 19:12like the teams, they were all good last year with the
- 19:14exception of the Bears. But I think the Bears took a
- 19:16step forward. I see maybe more parity in the
- 19:19North this year than last. How about that?
- 19:21Yeah, I would agree. I mean, the Lions have two new
- 19:24coordinators. I think you don't have.
- 19:26You can't just assume the offense defense is going to fly
- 19:29like they did with with Johnson and Glenn being gone.
- 19:32I think that's an advantage for Green Bay, getting them in week
- 19:35one with the brand new coordinators.
- 19:37And certainly the Vikings have a new quarterback and he might be,
- 19:40you know, Jaden Daniels 2.0. But that's probably wishful
- 19:44thinking. I do think the Vikings are more
- 19:45of a 10 or 11 win team if McCarthy is a solid quarterback
- 19:50and obviously it builds a really nice roster around him.
- 19:52But you know, he's never thrown a pass in the NFL so he will
- 19:55assume a 1314 win chief. You know, unless your name is
- 19:58Paul Allen, I don't think you can accept that.
- 20:01So yeah, I think 11 or 12 wins, probably wins the North and I
- 20:05think like I felt last year. Did not come true.
- 20:08I would think the four teams are all within about four games of
- 20:11each other. Did you talk to PA after this?
- 20:13Have you heard what? When did he find the first loss
- 20:16for the Vikings? Usually tries pulls that bit out
- 20:19about this time every year. Yeah, you know, I caught him and
- 20:22Ben Lieber a little too late. They were going through the
- 20:24Packer schedule and Lieber had the pack at 6:00 and 11:00.
- 20:28So I I texted PA that that was some fine humor they had on this
- 20:33morning. Good stuff.
- 20:35Week 1 at home, first time since, what, 2018?
- 20:39That's crazy. That's unthinkable, you know,
- 20:42with all these cute computer algorithms that we have and all
- 20:44these kind of different things do are teams able to kind of put
- 20:48in, Hey, by the way, you know, I, I think about a reminder here
- 20:53locally, I think Kurt Ferrets has started on the road like 21
- 20:56of his 26 seasons in the big 10, things like that, how they could
- 20:59happen. Is there, do you know, is there
- 21:01anything though that teams individually put in schedule
- 21:04wise outside of, hey, we can't use this date because there's a
- 21:07motor truck rally happening? Yeah, for sure.
- 21:10I remember reading last year after the schedules were
- 21:12announced that Green Bay had requested that the league
- 21:15finally let them start at home because, you know, Matt Lafleur
- 21:18is in his sixth season. He had yet to have that happen,
- 21:21and it didn't happen last year. So yes, you can put requests in.
- 21:24I mean, as a as a fan base, I'd like to request at some time in
- 21:28my life. Having the Vikings come to
- 21:30Lambeau in cold weather. It feels like it's been forever
- 21:33since we've got. And then, in fact, as the
- 21:35schedule was being leaked yesterday, you knew the Packers
- 21:38and Vikings were going to close out the season, but we didn't
- 21:40know where. I assume because of how it's
- 21:43always been lately that it would be at U.S. bank Stadium.
- 21:46God forbid the Vikings should have to come to Lambeau in
- 21:49January, right? Yeah, of course.
- 21:51It's back up in the Twin Cities for Week 18.
- 21:53So yes, teams can put those requests in.
- 21:55I don't know how seriously they look at them, but I know they do
- 21:58it. Zonecoverage.com is where you
- 22:01can read them. KFAN in the Twin Cities on the I
- 22:03Heart app is where you can hear them Saturday mornings and in
- 22:07the NFL season, you're #30 Packer preview on Sunday
- 22:10mornings. Dave Sinican, Thank you.
- 22:12Dave, we will talk to you in the weeks ahead.
- 22:14Appreciate you coming on as always.
- 22:16Dave Sinican, thank you. Got it.
- 22:18Look forward to it. See.
- 22:18You again. Good to talk to you, Dave
- 22:20Sinican, as we take a look at the Packers earlier, Dame
- 22:23Mazatani on the Vikings. Yeah, that's 13 days for Pack
- 22:27and Bears. It's going to be a tough O and
- 22:30two. For him, yeah, maybe.
- 22:33Maybe it? Was a mist kick away last year
- 22:36something happening? I guess I didn't realize that.
- 22:39They one in five. In the division, that's not
- 22:42good. Hacker's going the wrong way.
- 22:45Do you think? No too much scar tissue.
- 22:50Who finishes 4th you like? Do you think the Vikings are the
- 22:53Vikings? Yeah.
- 22:55Your lions win it. Damn my boyfriend.
- 22:58The Lions. So I'll let me get this
- 22:59straight. So my, my, my, my.
- 23:02You've got a worthy guy. I'm a Nebraska football guy.
- 23:04Yeah. Husker Miller.
- 23:05I love it. I don't know, I I'm not in love
- 23:11with the Lions though. Yeah, it's the coordinator thing
- 23:14and I think it's fair. I mean they they may be, as you
- 23:17know, not a drop off at all. Now I think there will be both
- 23:21those guys are head coaches and could have been earlier than
- 23:23they got their respective jobs this season.
- 23:28We'll see, the Eagles say stunk. If it is 10 and seven, we got a
- 23:34bunch of teams that are all. I think that's what it is,
- 23:36Trent, I really do. Can the Bears get there?
- 23:39Get to 10 and. Can they get to 10 and 7?
- 23:41I think they were heading in that direction before Washington
- 23:43happened. And then it fell off.
- 23:45It just got off a Cliff. I mean, the season just went put
- 23:49at that. Point I was reading, Caleb
- 23:51Williams said. There were times after everybody
- 23:54was fired, he was just go in there, watch film by himself,
- 23:57nobody around really, no coaches with him.
- 24:00What are you looking for? He don't know.
- 24:01Now he's at least like watching film.
- 24:03It'll be nice to have an adult there.
- 24:06How much time we got? We always got time.
- 24:09Home to Minnesota win at DEET loss.
- 24:14Dallas at home. Win at Vegas.
- 24:17Win. There's three before they hit
- 24:19the by. We're now in October at
- 24:21Washington. Loss home to New Orleans, win 4
- 24:25at Bolt, L at Cincy, L home to Giants.
- 24:29Big win. Five at Vikingville L home to
- 24:34Steelers, win 6. At Philly loss at Green Bay
- 24:38Gross loss home to Cleveland, win 7.
- 24:41At A home to Green Bay. Win 8 at Ninerville.
- 24:48Win 9 home to Detroit. Sunday Night Football with the
- 24:54division supremacy on the line. Snow was falling.
- 24:58Soldier Field. Oh, sign me.
- 25:01Up those Dome kitties, they don't play well in that cold
- 25:04weather. Go ten wins potential right
- 25:08there. It's as easy as that folks.
- 25:10Dad Patrick tried to tell us not to.
- 25:12WNL who you tried to kid Patrick time to try and win $1000 in
- 25:17this nationwide contest. You can head to kxno.com right
- 25:21now. The keyword this hour is money.

- 25:27The keyword is money at kxno.com.
- 25:31Another opportunity coming up in one hour or a little bit less
- 25:35from that right now and throughout the afternoon with
- 25:36the drive with Heather and Lucas.
- 25:38This contest is sponsored by her friends at Suntan City Chiefs.
- 25:42Next Miller and Condon, Iowa Sports Radio Network, Right,
- 25:54Miller, Condon, welcome back. About 25 minutes before 2 top of
- 25:57the hour. It'll be the drive coming up.
- 25:59Heather and Lucas until 5 overtime Iowa from 5:00 until
- 26:036:00. Well, the NF LS got a real
- 26:04quandary. They're going to have to figure
- 26:06out if they can change the rules on flexing because the Chiefs
- 26:10appear in prime time so many times, and with their pending
- 26:14doom and gloom this year that's going to be falling.
- 26:16The Kansas City Chiefs, the networks will be looking to get
- 26:19out of most of those games, probably by what trend?
- 26:22Middle of October? Early November.
- 26:24I'm not putting my name on this one.
- 26:26That's Ken. That is Ken Miller that is
- 26:29stating that. Hello Nick, got the Chiefs
- 26:31bloods.com. Middle of February, does that
- 26:33work? For you it has most years, the
- 26:36last few years anyways, Good to talk to you, Nick.
- 26:38All kidding aside, I love the fact last year the game in
- 26:43Brazil wasn't sure I was going to go, you know, just a
- 26:46different venue, etcetera. And the Packers and the Eagles
- 26:49put on a hell of a show, if you recall.
- 26:51Well, this year, we'll get the Chargers and the Chiefs.
- 26:54It's the AFC West, sign me up. And then the next week, the
- 26:57Eagles and Arrowhead. Hello, back-to-back.
- 27:00Pretty good start to that schedule for the Chiefs, Nick.
- 27:03Yeah, I think so too. I mean, I'm I can see why the
- 27:06Chargers gave up the home game against the Chiefs because
- 27:08generally A50 to 55 stands. The Chiefs fan.
- 27:14Out there in Los Angeles. So, yeah, I mean, this is a long
- 27:17rumored game. A couple of months ago we kind
- 27:19of heard that the Chief, we wanted to have an international
- 27:22game this year, but they wanted it to be a Rd.
- 27:24I got their wish and so they'll open against the Chargers.
- 27:28Hopefully the field conditions will be a.
- 27:30Lot better. I think Jordan Love got hurt on
- 27:33the second and last play in that game.
- 27:35You know that is something that they that the league is
- 27:38indicated that they would correct.
- 27:40It's only a 49,000 seat venue. So it's going to be interesting
- 27:43to see how many fans travel from Kansas City and Los Angeles and
- 27:47then Week 2, you know, the. Super Bowl 4 rematch.
- 27:50Technically another prime time slot.
- 27:52It's going to be the NFL game of the Week on Fox.
- 27:54It's going to be the late game, just a great way to start the
- 27:59season in my opinion. Get the get the Chargers game
- 28:02out of the way and come back and play the Eagles with an extra
- 28:04couple days rest. And so because of that neutral
- 28:07site game, only seven true Rd. games on the schedule for Kansas
- 28:11City. But boy, you look through them
- 28:13and and until the end, not exactly some easy trips in
- 28:16there. You got the Buffalo, the Denver
- 28:18in the middle along with Dallas, those three in the middle.
- 28:20But overall, boy, I'm a Bears fan.
- 28:23Look at my schedule compared to yours.
- 28:24Can we switch? Yeah, You know, I mean, the
- 28:28Chiefs 9 home games again, no international game abroad for
- 28:31the home game they've got. I think it's the best home
- 28:34schedule that the Chiefs could possibly have wanted because
- 28:37you're playing a lot of really good teams at Arrowhead.
- 28:40You know, you get the Eagles, you get the cows.
- 28:42The Lions. I mean the Lions you get the
- 28:45Washington Commanders you got, you mentioned the Broncos, the
- 28:48Texans, the Ravens at home, the. Road, You know Lamar, Yeah.
- 28:53Yeah, the road, you know, they got to add Tennessee at the end
- 28:55of the year. I think the last the end of the
- 28:57year is, is kind of the softer portion.
- 28:59And obviously they're going to play the Broncos on Christmas
- 29:01like in Kansas City. And that should decide the AFC
- 29:04West in my opinion. But you know, I think overall,
- 29:06if you're if you're a Chiefs fan and you're a season ticket
- 29:09holder, you're not. And maybe you sell your tickets
- 29:12to the Colts game. But other than that, I mean, if
- 29:14you've got some really good matchups against teams that were
- 29:17playoff teams a year ago in Kansas City and the road
- 29:20schedule you mentioned, you know, at Buffalo, at Denver, at
- 29:24Dallas are going to be tough. The rest of it, yeah, not so
- 29:26tough, I don't think. We shall see where it goes from
- 29:30here. So obviously the League still is
- 29:33very much aware of the power that the this franchise holds by
- 29:37putting them both on Thanksgiving and then again on
- 29:40Christmas. Again, the Thanksgiving game.
- 29:43Did that surprise you? I mean, I could see Christmas
- 29:45being part of it. It worked.
- 29:47It's worked well for them. Did the Thanksgiving game, was
- 29:51that kind of rumored at all? Nick, you told us about the
- 29:53Chargers that that have been out there for a while, the Chiefs
- 29:57going to Dallas in what the NFL hopes and they're already
- 30:00starting to speculate that this might be the most well watched
- 30:05regular season game of all time. They think it's going to do that
- 30:10type of a number. When did when did this one first
- 30:13appear on your radar? About a week ago, I had heard
- 30:17that Jerry Jones really had pushed for the Chiefs to go to
- 30:21Dallas on Thanksgiving. The Chiefs are rumored to go
- 30:24there four years ago and it just didn't work out.
- 30:26I think they ended up going with the Broncos, if I'm not
- 30:28mistaken, or maybe it's the Chargers.
- 30:31And so it was something that the league really wanted.
- 30:34And I'm with you can't. I think I'm going to put it out
- 30:36there. I think this will be the most
- 30:39watched game in NFL history in the regular season.
- 30:41And I think you're looking at close to 50 million.
- 30:44Yeah, that's the number ultimately be that number.
- 30:46Perfect time slot. You know, you got your Turkey
- 30:49hangover done. You got open window 4:30
- 30:53Eastern, 3:30 Central. And it's I think it's going to
- 30:57be a great game if it's you know what's going to really sell this
- 31:00if both teams are first in their division or near the top, it's
- 31:04going to it's going to, it may exceed even my expectations
- 31:07because I think this is the number one game of the year
- 31:10based on location, the day. And kudos to the NFL overall the
- 31:15the Thanksgiving schedule. Finally, we have three really
- 31:18good games with a really good football team and that hasn't
- 31:22happened for a long time. So the Chiefs have expressed
- 31:26interest in being permanent hosts on Christmas.
- 31:29The NFL push back on that right two parter.
- 31:33Well, Patrick Holmes isn't going to play till he's 60.
- 31:35Well, that's. True.
- 31:36So hopefully maybe then that's a reason behind it.
- 31:39But is the fan base, is that something that they're enamored
- 31:43with? I mean, every single one of your
- 31:45Christmases being there, Thanksgiving is one thing and
- 31:47it's been transmission for decades upon decades.
- 31:49I don't know as the season ticket holder be something that
- 31:52would be difficult sell for me. Well, considering the history of
- 31:56the AFL and you know, the chief losing to the Dolphins at
- 31:59Christmas Day back in 71, you know, I think that has some that
- 32:03I'm thankful they've moved past it finally.
- 32:05But you're right, Mahomes is going to play forever.
- 32:07But but Clark Hunt indicated very strongly to to the
- 32:12commissioner that they wanted to be the attempt of the permanent
- 32:15host for the Christmas Day game in Kansas City every year.
- 32:19The week said no. And what they do, they put them
- 32:21right back there this year. So I think for the conceivable
- 32:24future, you're probably going to see the Chiefs featured on
- 32:28Christmas Day for the next three, maybe four years.
- 32:31And then maybe they wean off of that.
- 32:33But, you know, I'm not a big fan of it being in Detroit and being
- 32:36in Dallas every year either. You know, it used to be in
- 32:38Kansas City back in the AFL days on Thanksgiving.
- 32:41So I think this is a compromise. And listen, the Chiefs are a
- 32:45ratings bonanza. They set records, They said so
- 32:49many records last year. And it's going to continue.
- 32:52Pastor Mahomes is in his prime, you know, and the Chiefs are the
- 32:56number 1 ticket in the NFL. Like him, love him, hate him.
- 32:59And that's what the league's counting on.
- 33:01Many, as many people want to watch him win.
- 33:02They want to see him lose, too. That's a great point.
- 33:05Nick Athen chiefs blitz.com Nick gets you out of here on this.
- 33:08Saw some video of Travis Kelsey. Boy, does he look dead fit.
- 33:11I mean, he looks terrific as he prepares for what in all
- 33:14likelihood will be his final year.
- 33:17And you know, if if the offseason is ND indicator, man,
- 33:21oh man, he's going to be ready to roll.
- 33:23Yeah, he's £20.20 to £20 lighter now.
- 33:26He'll put some weight on during the season, but maybe he's just
- 33:29cutting back on Taylor Swift's Pop Tarts, not eating so many of
- 33:32them, so who knows. But hey, he's he's been working
- 33:35out like crazy. He looks like he's in great
- 33:37shape. He's going to play lighter.
- 33:39The Chiefs have a really good wide receiver core around him
- 33:43and I think the outfits of line will be better.
- 33:44So many things are going to be available to him this season.
- 33:48He wants to go out of winter and I'm not.
- 33:51I'm not betting against Travis Kelsey having to come.
- 33:54No you're 1000% right. You know I'm glad you made that
- 33:56point about Kansas City and and the Chargers that the building
- 34:00would be half full of Chiefs fans anywhere.
- 34:02I know there's a lot of Chiefs haters that are pointing that
- 34:05out on why did the Chiefs not have to play a true Rd. game?
- 34:09I mean the building would be half of theirs anyways so makes
- 34:13sense. Makes perfect sense.
- 34:15Chiefs blitz.com. I'm sure you've broken down the
- 34:18schedule. If not, you'll get to it.
- 34:20A lot of content leading up to the TO training camp, I'm
- 34:23guessing to Nick. Can't wait, can't wait.
- 34:25Yeah podcast three days a week, 1:30 central time.
- 34:28You can check out the Chief Blitz 4 Guys in a bar podcast on
- 34:31YouTube and of course, the website cheeseblitz.com.
- 34:34We try to update at least every day or two Offseason a little
- 34:38differently, but hey, Chiefs are back in business.
- 34:40You can now start officially talking about the 225, the 225
- 34:44season out of the Yeah. Does feel real now that the
- 34:47schedule's in front of us. Nick, as always, thanks for
- 34:49doing this, brother. Talk to you in the weeks ahead.
- 34:51See you buddy. You guys take care of.

- 35:04Yes, because you. Can't use them I don't think the
- 35:06more I think about it. We have an answer for you when
- 35:10we come back. Miller in Condon Iowa Sports
- 35:12Radio Network No in Condon. Welcome back, Iowa Sports Radio
- 35:19Network, our final segment of the day coming up at the top of
- 35:22the hour of the drive. Heather and Lucas, at that time
- 35:25your leader, Ryan Gerrard in the PGA Championship, he's 5 under,
- 35:33has the outright lead at this point.
- 35:34Ryan Gerrard. Sounds made-up.
- 35:36What are any idea what his price was prior to the T going in the
- 35:40ground had to be a huge Have you heard of him?
- 35:42No, you have as best golf as you bet.
- 35:45I've never heard of the guy. Wow.
- 35:47And he's leading the way. He's an American, too.
- 35:48He's ranked 80th in the world. News to me.
- 35:52Yes, same. Here North Carolina kid, is he,
- 35:56we didn't have time to talk about this and and I, I feel
- 35:59like we should have this DCI story.
- 36:03It's getting worse. And I'm talking about the
- 36:05gambling story from a few years back with Iowa, the I and Iowa
- 36:09State athletes getting caught up in it, in the no warrant,
- 36:13etcetera, etcetera, and how bad they looked.
- 36:15Apparently it's worse. And now state legislatures
- 36:18legislators are involved because the DCI apparently tried out
- 36:23this scheme at the state legislature.
- 36:26Yeah, the State House. Not a bad idea, right?
- 36:28I. Mean, my good God, do you know
- 36:30how many people the a the class action lawsuit's got a lot of
- 36:33people on it to begin with? People we don't even know about.
- 36:36I think that that number just increased.
- 36:38This is terrible. How brazen do you?
- 36:40Have to be my God. To do that, to go after them.
- 36:45And how did it's finally see the light of day this late in the
- 36:48game? Anyways, that's well done
- 36:51whoever broke that story. Yeah, I saw Radio Iowa.
- 36:53I think that. You know what, that's the first
- 36:55one I saw too. So let's if it's we're wrong,
- 36:58our apologies, but Radio Iowa, well done out of you.
- 37:01All right, Trent, let's make some plays.
- 37:02We just got two of them for this evening.
- 37:04Nothing. A baseball trip by trigger.
- 37:05I'm going to grab the points with the Nuggets.
- 37:07Maybe it's more hopeful than anything.
- 37:09They can expand and we'll get a game seven out of it.
- 37:11But I'll grab the four and a half of Joker and company in
- 37:14that one this evening. 730 tip off in Denver and.
- 37:19Yes. They're gonna extend, they're
- 37:20back at home. You have told me they're just a
- 37:23different team that, well, hella bucks a different goalie there.
- 37:26So we will lay the -125 with the Winnipeg Jets.
- 37:30And let's root for a game on Saturday.
- 37:32And I know that won't go well because it can't play it at home
- 37:34again, but we'll see, I think. Maybe I mean stranger things
- 37:38have happened. Well, yeah, but obviously if
- 37:39they do, they'd get back for 7:00.
- 37:41But that would be Monday and I hope I'm watching my squad on
- 37:44Monday. I doubt that I will be.
- 37:46I think the capital season comes to an end today.
- 37:48Probably, probably. Hurricanes get them.
- 37:50Leafs are in deep water. Edmonton's moved on.
- 37:54We're coming to the end. I hate to say it, but we're
- 37:57inside the final what month or so of both NBA and hockey?
- 38:01Let's get the Timberwolves to give us.
- 38:02Wouldn't that be something if they found a way to get to the
- 38:05championship game and please be sharing the floor with the
- 38:09Knicks? I mean the storylines in that
- 38:12series. Sign me.
- 38:14Oh my God. So we finished today where we
- 38:17began the program, that is with the NFL schedule and as we were
- 38:21speculating and looking forward to survive.
- 38:23About this, Yeah, yeah. So week 17 there is a game.
- 38:27Saturday, December 27th there will be a game.
- 38:32This will be streamed exclusively on Peacock.
- 38:34I do not know if there's a. Stand alone game.
- 38:37It's a stand alone game that will be only on Peacock week 17.
- 38:41I don't know if it's the only game on that Saturday, but there
- 38:44is one for sure. It is going to be amongst the
- 38:47group of TBA games, Arizona at Cincinnati, Baltimore at Green
- 38:53Bay, Giants at Vegas, no Texans at Chargers or Seattle, Carolina
- 38:59probably not so likely of these two, Baltimore at Green Bay or
- 39:04Houston at Chargers that will also be involved there for Circa
- 39:08survival. So Houston charge, my God, Mike
- 39:13Palm will share more details with that when he joins us
- 39:15tomorrow at 1:00. Look forward to that.
