- 1:58SPEAKER_00: Thank you so much for having me, Karen, first of all.
- 2:01SPEAKER_00: It's such a joy to be here with you.
- 2:03SPEAKER_00: I know we have so many tremendously connected conversations, and every time we wish we'd recorded them.
- 2:08SPEAKER_00: So now we actually get to record, which is amazing.
- 2:10SPEAKER_00: So thank you.
- 2:11SPEAKER_00: Yes, my name is Rachel Robson Green.
- 2:13SPEAKER_00: My business is conscious coaching.
- 2:15SPEAKER_00: I'm an executive coach and transformational leadership coach.
- 2:18SPEAKER_00: So what does that mean?
- 2:19SPEAKER_00: I basically support businesses and organizations to develop, empower, inspire their leaders and teams to create an engaged, conscious culture where everyone gets to thrive.
- 2:29SPEAKER_00: Very much born out of my corporate roller coaster journey through which I hit burnout and breakdown on more than one occasion, and feel really passionate about empowering people within their working environment to be on purpose, to be creating an environment that everybody gets to really thrive in and be their best version.
- 2:49SPEAKER_00: And similarly, I also support individuals and entrepreneurs as leaders in their own businesses and their lives to do exactly the same.
- 2:58SPEAKER_00: And this is those who, especially feeling stark overwhelmed, perhaps they're caught in the relentless doing.
- 3:03SPEAKER_00: I think there's a lot of overwhelm out there at the moment.
- 3:05SPEAKER_00: I'm hearing that from my clients.
- 3:07SPEAKER_00: And the limitations that we place on ourselves.
- 3:09SPEAKER_00: So I help my clients to break through those limiting beliefs, better manage their time, and create a true transformation in terms of their mindset and their heart set, because often we're too much in our head and we get to feel into things and get into inspired action from there and untame the mindset piece of it so that they can create the reality that they really want, not just in their business but in their lives.
- 3:34SPEAKER_00: I talk about not the work-life balance but the life-life balance because it's all the same.
- 3:38SPEAKER_00: Where we show up professionally and personally is the decision we get to make on a daily basis, and that's what I help my clients with.
- 3:44SPEAKER_00: And that's both individuals as entrepreneurs and businesses and organizations.
- 3:49SPEAKER_01: It's really important work, I think, because you're absolutely right with what you say.
- 3:52SPEAKER_01: I think as entrepreneurs, that blend of work and personal, like I say, it can be very blended where there are very little boundaries because it can be really full-on all the time.
- 4:06SPEAKER_01: And I think it's really important to have people like yourself to support entrepreneurs and people who run in businesses to really manage that in the best way possible so they get that life-life balance.
- 4:20SPEAKER_00: Absolutely.
- 4:21SPEAKER_00: I talk a lot, in fact, recently thinking about slowing down to speed up, we've all been running at it, I think, since September, October, and it's been building up in terms of lots of more things to do.
- 4:34SPEAKER_00: And we forget who we be in that.
- 4:37SPEAKER_00: And it's only when we really reconnect and realign, and we slow down, we we we look at where it is that we can prioritize and move our energy into that we can end up in inspired action and then speeding up and kind of getting into the type of momentum that we want, not the momentum that leads us to burnout and overwhelm.
- 4:56SPEAKER_00: Because I think, particularly as entrepreneurs and as as kind of high-achieving professionals, in whatever area you're working, we have that tendency to really push ourselves and we don't double down on the rest and recovery that we need in order to be who we want to be and create what we want to create, whether that's you know personally or professionally, it's so important.
- 5:18SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I absolutely agree with you.
- 5:21SPEAKER_01: I think in order to do what we do as entrepreneurs, we do need to step into our being and we need to feel into what we want to achieve.
- 5:34SPEAKER_01: So rather than just being in our place of the head where we're thinking about the practical side of things and what we need to get done, you know, through the day, what's on our to-do list, it's recognising who we need to be in order to show up to achieve the things that we want to achieve for ourselves.
- 5:54SPEAKER_01: And I think you're absolutely right.
- 5:56SPEAKER_01: I don't think enough focus is necessarily put on that because we get so caught up in the doing all the time.
- 6:05SPEAKER_00: Yes, absolutely.
- 6:07SPEAKER_00: It's the alignment with what we are here to create.
- 6:11SPEAKER_00: And if I reframe that in a slightly different way, what we're talking about is the fulfillment piece.
- 6:15SPEAKER_00: You know, what are we doing it for?
- 6:16SPEAKER_00: What's our why?
- 6:18SPEAKER_00: Are we being on purpose?
- 6:19SPEAKER_00: And I think we get so lost, as you rightly say, in the doing piece of it, we forget who we're being and who we're choosing to be as the leaders in our life in every area of our life and how we get to show up.
- 6:31SPEAKER_00: And often that means getting out of our heads, and like you say, the to-do lists, it prioritizing and trying to get to the end of a never-ending list of to-dos, and not doubling down on the inspired action and what comes from our heart, who we're being, you know, what we know to be true, and really aligning with that.
- 6:49SPEAKER_00: And we often forget, and part of my role wherever I'm showing up, is to remind and reconnect people with that piece of themselves so that they are thinking about what is the impact I'm here to create?
- 7:01SPEAKER_00: How do I get to make a difference today in my life and my family's life and in the life of those around me?
- 7:07SPEAKER_00: And I think it's that fulfillment piece that we're looking for more and more, particularly this side of COVID, this side of what we've experienced over the last two and a half years, and going into what we're experiencing now, of course.
- 7:20SPEAKER_01: Yes, it's been an interesting time, hasn't it?
- 7:23SPEAKER_01: Because we have gone through this incredible amount of change and shift, whether it's in the economy or whether it's in our local community, where there's been a tremendous amount of change that's been going on over the past few years, and we know that going forward there's going to be a lot of change that we're going to be facing as well.
- 7:46SPEAKER_01: And I think now more than ever, as you said, we need to lean into why we're here and why we are doing the things that we're doing and what that means in a sort of grander scale almost, rather than getting so caught up with a to-do list.
- 8:03SPEAKER_01: I mean, I sometimes do think our to-do lists are like the devil's work, isn't it?
- 8:09SPEAKER_01: It's almost as though when you have this list of tasks to do, that's where your focus goes because you want to be productive and get the things done that need to be done.
- 8:21SPEAKER_01: But I haven't said that, it can stop growth in other areas because you're so caught up in the sort of weeds of your business almost, rather than looking from a wider perspective as to like almost bringing everything together, and I think that's really important.
- 8:39SPEAKER_01: I think it's really important to be connected to what you're creating, so you understand the intention behind it, but also how powerful what you're creating is.
- 8:51SPEAKER_00: Yes, absolutely.
- 8:53SPEAKER_00: I love what you're saying, and it's the intention that pulls us forward into inspired action rather than busy action.
- 9:01SPEAKER_00: And I was laughing to myself because just like me, I create these lists, and then you only feel successful if you get to the end of it.
- 9:10SPEAKER_00: And we set ourselves up royally within that because it means we're just in busy in the weeds, as you say, we're in busy work rather than focusing on maybe the one, two, or three things that are really connected to that intentional piece, to the bigger vision, to where we're heading and what's really important to us.
- 9:29SPEAKER_00: And of course, that's going to be personal to each of us.
- 9:32SPEAKER_00: That that the reason we're doing what we're doing, why we're doing what we're doing, and what's important about it is our own choice, it's our own conscious choice.
- 9:43SPEAKER_00: And we then get to make that discerning conscious choice about the things we do in order to get us there.
- 9:50SPEAKER_00: But setting the intention is so powerful, and that's and and also letting go of the results.
- 9:57SPEAKER_00: We get so caught up in thinking about the how, and that we have to figure out every single step, and it has to look a certain way, and we don't then allow ourselves to expand into the possibilities that are outside the edge of our map of the world, that are outside the realms of what we have experienced, and look at things from a different perspective.
- 10:19SPEAKER_00: There are so many more possibilities, there are unlimited possibilities, and so there's again a really beautiful when it happens, it's beautiful, piece where there's an intentional focus and a letting go of how it's going to happen, almost like a letting go of the outcome, because the how may come in very different ways than you think it's going to.
- 10:40SPEAKER_00: And I think as entrepreneurs, we get to really move into, and we call it a growth mindset, but we get to move into it's an expansive mindset so that we are intentional and focused and also allowing other possibilities to evolve as well.
- 10:58SPEAKER_00: And it's it's uh it's it's a dance of leaning in and you know, kind of the giving and receiving, I suppose, piece of it, and it's so important, particularly as entrepreneurs, and particularly at the moment in the climate we find ourselves.
- 11:11SPEAKER_01: Yes, well, it's very challenging times at the moment, isn't it?
- 11:14SPEAKER_01: I mean, we were talking about this yesterday, and I think you're absolutely right.
- 11:18SPEAKER_01: I think really doubling down and kind of looking at things from a sort of wider stance, especially you know, in today's world where there is so much change going on, is more important than it's ever been before, and really developing that growth mindset so that you are looking in at the possibilities that are available as opposed to just seeing limitations.
- 11:46SPEAKER_01: I mean, we were speaking yesterday, obviously, about what's going on in the economy as at the time of this recording, the UK economy has officially gone into a recession, and I know with that it can bring a lot of fear and scarcity to people's minds because the narrative that we're having to digest is the fact that there's just so much scarcity at the moment.
- 12:11SPEAKER_01: I mean, how do you feel about that?
- 12:13SPEAKER_01: Are you finding that with your clients?
- 12:15SPEAKER_01: And what would you suggest as being a way to almost kind of flip the mindset?
- 12:24SPEAKER_00: Yes, I mean that's the question at the moment.
- 12:26SPEAKER_00: How do we all flip our mindsets?
- 12:28SPEAKER_00: How do we all reframe when the presenting reality is so challenging?
- 12:33SPEAKER_00: And who do we need to be in order to cope?
- 12:36SPEAKER_00: And I know we referenced, you know, the last two and a half years and having come through COVID and all of the challenges that presented themselves.
- 12:44SPEAKER_00: And actually, when we look back now, so many businesses, so many people made different choices, conscious choices, and thrived through it because they were thinking outside the box.
- 12:58SPEAKER_00: They managed to pivot either what they were doing or how they were doing it or what their choices were, life choices, in terms of what's important to them.
- 13:07SPEAKER_00: Actually, why am I spending my time over here doing that when that's not fulfilling me and I want to be doing this instead?
- 13:13SPEAKER_00: And really moving into that.
- 13:15SPEAKER_00: So I think there is always opportunity born out of these challenging times, and they're not the only ones.
- 13:21SPEAKER_00: And when we look back over history, and I was doing this with some clients yesterday, you know, framing it over the last hundred, two hundred years, change is constant.
- 13:29SPEAKER_00: And our conscious choice at the moment is okay, so I'm surrounded by this narrative of fear.
- 13:37SPEAKER_00: I'm surrounded by the narrative that the market is contracting rather than expanding.
- 13:42SPEAKER_00: And our challenge is through that presenting reality is not to get caught up in the belief system of there is not enough, and there is, you know, kind of there's the lack, the scarcity.
- 13:55SPEAKER_00: Super challenging, of course, because of our own beliefs about money, and you know, kind of that's one of those, you know, really hot topics for us all.
- 14:04SPEAKER_00: Socially and culturally, we've absorbed different belief systems around it.
- 14:08SPEAKER_00: But we do have a conscious choice in that, whether we focus on the lack and scarcity, or whether we pivot and decide, I'm going to look for the opportunity.
- 14:19SPEAKER_00: And I'm not saying it's easy.
- 14:21SPEAKER_00: It's not like you can click your fingers and just be there.
- 14:24SPEAKER_00: But at the same time, this is where we get to look for opportunities and work through the personal limitations and the limitations of what we find around us.
- 14:33SPEAKER_00: And as we've seen, there is the opportunity to create different possibilities where we can thrive.
- 14:40SPEAKER_00: So it's definitely a mindset piece.
- 14:42SPEAKER_00: And I mentioned growth mindset, but it's expansive mindset, and remind ourselves of the resilience and the strength that we have created through the last two, three years, and to really double down again on that to take us through this period.
- 14:56SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I absolutely agree.
- 14:58SPEAKER_01: It was interesting through the pandemic.
- 15:01SPEAKER_01: I mean, that was an incredibly tough time for people, and I think everybody was affected in some way.
- 15:09SPEAKER_01: But as you mentioned, there were many businesses that were born out of that time because of the opportunities that presented themselves, and it was also an opportunity as an entrepreneur and a small business owner to look in at your business and to look at what you could do in order to sort of thrive during that period.
- 15:34SPEAKER_01: And I think when we have these times of challenges, I think us entrepreneurs really need to be sort of asking is what we can do to put ourselves in the best place possible so that we can build through this time because there's always opportunities that are out there and that are available to us if we have that open-mindedness of going and exploring because that's what it's about, isn't it?
- 16:05SPEAKER_01: Is understanding the fact that okay, so in the media, there's a lot of doom and gloom, and if you were to listen to the media, you would honestly think that the world has come to an end, and it's not coming to an end, it's just we're on a cycle, and this is a period of time that may be a bit more challenging than times that we've experienced.
- 16:29SPEAKER_01: However, it's how we look at this time and what, like you said, the conscious decisions that you make, and also recognising what you want to achieve through this period.
- 16:40SPEAKER_00: I mean, that there's so much in what you said there.
- 16:42SPEAKER_00: I just want to pick up on the change piece of it because this is evolution, you know, we learn contrast, and the contrast is extreme for sure, and it's going to feel really uncomfortable and tough for people.
- 16:58SPEAKER_00: But if you think about the growth and expansion of the world, of the universe, this is what it is to be human, this is what it is to come up against those edges, push past them and expand into a new way of being.
- 17:13SPEAKER_00: And we've done it throughout time.
- 17:15SPEAKER_00: And this is another one of those times where we're living through it, and we then get to look at where are we with our edges, and how do I get to cross over into something that I don't know and can't see.
- 17:29SPEAKER_00: We always fall back on the well, I will believe it when I see it.
- 17:34SPEAKER_00: And that's not actually how it works.
- 17:37SPEAKER_00: It's when you believe it, you will see it.
- 17:40SPEAKER_00: It's the other way around, and that's really challenging because it's how we create it.
- 17:45SPEAKER_00: So it's going back to that intentional piece.
- 17:48SPEAKER_00: And I think as entrepreneurs, as you rightly say, Karen, we've got the opportunity to make those conscious choices and shift our mindset in a way that leaves us open to creating new things and the possibility of new things.
- 18:05SPEAKER_00: I mean, who would have known three years ago that the online digital space would boom?
- 18:10SPEAKER_00: And I know this is a conversation and that you have moved into yourself in a huge way to really serve people and businesses in a different way.
- 18:20SPEAKER_00: And we think about the evolution of business over the last, you know, kind of hundred or so years, or even thinking about web and you know how the the boom and bust of that.
- 18:31SPEAKER_00: Everything has this flux, has this up and down to it.
- 18:36SPEAKER_00: And I think this is what we're in at the moment.
- 18:38SPEAKER_00: And then as individuals, because of course that's going bigger picture, and it's great to think about that.
- 18:43SPEAKER_00: But it's like, well, what does that mean to me?
- 18:45SPEAKER_00: How can that actually help me right now when my presenting reality is scary and feels that way?
- 18:51SPEAKER_00: It's really doubling down on sometimes it's the simple things in terms of reconnecting ourselves with positivity and thinking about the things that bring us joy and feeling into a different way of being rather than the lack, the scarcity.
- 19:07SPEAKER_00: And sometimes it can be a really subtle change and difference, and we don't realize we're doing it.
- 19:11SPEAKER_00: These belief systems are very unconscious, and you know, they do run the program a lot of the time.
- 19:17SPEAKER_00: So it is stopping ourselves in the moment and going, where is my focus?
- 19:22SPEAKER_00: Am I really looking at possible, or am I thinking about that there's not enough, that you know, the money is going to disappear?
- 19:30SPEAKER_00: And of course, as soon as our focus is there, that's what we're creating.
- 19:35SPEAKER_00: If we can move us, and sometimes it's a question of distraction.
- 19:39SPEAKER_00: We get to distract ourselves, to shift our mindset, you know, to shift into something different.
- 19:44SPEAKER_00: It's more that you can go from feeling lack and scarcity to incredible abundance in one fail swoop.
- 19:50SPEAKER_00: It may be that it's a small step.
- 19:53SPEAKER_00: So, what small step can you take right now to just shift into opening yourself up to what's possible rather than focusing on lack or scarcity, and even just noticing when you're doing it and getting into the habit of noticing where your mindset goes and where you tend to go.
- 20:10SPEAKER_00: And we did talk about something else here as well, Karen, that I just want to bring in a moment, and that is the responsibility.
- 20:16SPEAKER_00: We often make excuses.
- 20:17SPEAKER_00: Well, it's something over there that's creating that, and therefore I can't do it.
- 20:21SPEAKER_00: And we tend to hide behind this, and I know this is probably not going to be a popular thing to say, but as a leader, when we take a hundred percent responsibility for who we're being and what we're creating, and we can really think outside the box, that's when we do have the possibility of creating magic and opening ourselves up to things that perhaps we can't see and we can't feel in that moment.
- 20:45SPEAKER_00: So there's a lot there, I know.
- 20:47SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I love that.
- 20:48SPEAKER_01: The responsibility side is so important because we are responsible for the decisions we make, and you're absolutely right.
- 20:58SPEAKER_01: You can, of course, blame circumstance or what's going on in the economy, or the fact that X, Y, and Z is not happening, and therefore the reason why you've not done whatever is because of those reasons, but they are just excuses at the end of the day, and I think it's just recognizing the fact that if you're in that place and you are finding that you're blaming things that are outside of your control, then that can just lead to you sort of almost procrastinating and and not moving forward and just staying stuck.
- 21:40SPEAKER_01: And I think it's important to recognize that behavior because it's not going to be what serves you.
- 21:48SPEAKER_01: You know, I remember in the pandemic, I always remember it, there was a moment where I was having lunch with my children and I got really upset because.
- 22:00SPEAKER_01: Because at that time I was dealing with a lot in my business.
- 22:04SPEAKER_01: I have a branding and web studio for those that don't know.
- 22:08SPEAKER_01: And at the time I was running multiple projects, and the projects were being affected.
- 22:14SPEAKER_01: You know, the first thing that happens when times get tough is that clients hold back on marketing because they're batting down the hatches and they're having to make these decisions.
- 22:25SPEAKER_01: And of course, when you're providing marketing services, it becomes affected.
- 22:30SPEAKER_01: And it was very, very difficult in that moment because I was faced with the reality of the situation and the prospect that my business was going to disappear because if I had no work, if nobody was, you know, moving ahead with anything, and nobody was wanting support because they were all holding back because of the uncertainty that was going on, then that was going to mean that my business was going to be affected negatively.
- 23:01SPEAKER_01: And I think looking back, it would have been so easy to have just hid and to have just, you know, just given up.
- 23:10SPEAKER_01: And I remember I've only ever got really upset once in front of my children, and at the time they were six and eight, and they've never seen mummies that upset.
- 23:21SPEAKER_01: And I did it just completely got to me and the harsh reality of the situation and the impact that it was having.
- 23:30SPEAKER_01: And I almost needed to go to that place, I needed it to almost dismantle around me so it could wake me up, essentially.
- 23:39SPEAKER_01: And whilst it was not a great place to be, because emotionally I was just a little bit all over the place, looking back, it was the best thing that could have happened because what it did, it got me fighting back to look in on what was happening and face the harsh reality of the situation, and then I had to figure out how I was going to turn the situation around and how I was going to benefit from what was going on, and like you say, when things get a little bit pokey and you're having to step out of your comfort zone and look in at things that you don't want to see, it can be very, very uncomfortable.
- 24:22SPEAKER_01: But I do think in those moments that's where you really step into your power because you sort of take on this force that I'm not gonna let this beat me, I'm gonna use this time to get myself into a place where I'm better off.
- 24:42SPEAKER_01: And I think looking back, I'm definitely somebody that if you say to me you can't do something, I will be like, you know what, watch me.
- 24:49SPEAKER_01: And I I remember I once I got over myself and I got over what was happening, and I got myself to that place of right, okay, this is the reality.
- 25:00SPEAKER_01: What can I do to step into the person I need to become to turn this around?
- 25:07SPEAKER_01: Everything changed for me, everything changed for me.
- 25:10SPEAKER_01: It was almost as though the dots started to connect, and because of that, I was then able to develop something actually really quite powerful that had that situation not occurred and that period of time not occurred, I wouldn't be where I am today.
- 25:29SPEAKER_01: And so I now look back with immense gratitude because of what it brought me, and I guess when we're in that space of feeling as though everything's just getting on top of us, and there's no way forward, and we're just going to be affected, and it's going to be all doom and gloom.
- 25:48SPEAKER_01: That shifting mindset, that asking yourself really key questions can kind of really do wonders to move you forward.
- 26:01SPEAKER_01: And I think sometimes we have to go to that place.
- 26:04SPEAKER_01: I think sometimes things have to dismantle a little bit because we get caught up in complacency.
- 26:11SPEAKER_01: So when we have times of change and shift, the power is almost stepping into that.
- 26:18SPEAKER_00: Yes, I love what you're saying, and thank you for outlining your journey.
- 26:22SPEAKER_00: I think it's a really powerful reminder that we have these defining moments.
- 26:26SPEAKER_00: We're human, we do get these really deep emotions, and we have to process them.
- 26:34SPEAKER_00: I think if we squash them and ignore them or don't allow them to process, we do more damage.
- 26:41SPEAKER_00: And as you say, it's that going down to that point that gives us the impetus, maybe it's that extreme contrast that then allows us to shift.
- 26:53SPEAKER_00: But we do have to feel them in order to release them, and so there is no way around it, it's through.
- 27:00SPEAKER_00: And within coaching and with my coaching, it's my privilege often to support my clients to negotiate and hold them through these really deep and often distressing emotions to come out the other side so that you know, kind of that it can release that piece of it.
- 27:16SPEAKER_00: And I think we get to forgive ourselves too.
- 27:18SPEAKER_00: We think it's not about I get to have a positive mindset all the time and I have to be there.
- 27:24SPEAKER_00: We can't have the positive mindset without feeling the other.
- 27:27SPEAKER_00: We can't experience the joy without feeling the other.
- 27:30SPEAKER_00: So I think we do need to move through that, and that's often what gives us, it reminds us because it gives us the opportunity, as you say, to ask those questions: what is it that I really want?
- 27:40SPEAKER_00: What's important to me?
- 27:41SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 27:42SPEAKER_00: If I knew I couldn't fail, what's the one thing that I would do right now?
- 27:46SPEAKER_00: You know, or what's the one small thing that I can do right now that will give me what I need or will show myself self-care?
- 27:54SPEAKER_00: I'm often asking myself that in the morning just to reset myself because we usually put ourselves at the end of our list anyway.
- 28:00SPEAKER_00: And what I'm hearing through what you're saying as well is, you know, as a high-achieving professional yourself, we put ourselves under so much pressure.
- 28:07SPEAKER_00: And that pressure has to go somewhere, right?
- 28:10SPEAKER_00: And being in a place that feels really overwhelming, there is only one way to go, and that is up.
- 28:18SPEAKER_00: And I think it's a good reminder that the period that we're in right now and what we're experiencing is not going to last forever.
- 28:25SPEAKER_00: We get to double down on support for ourselves and each other.
- 28:28SPEAKER_00: And I think that's why these types of conversations are so important because in those moments we often feel alone.
- 28:34SPEAKER_00: We often feel that everybody else looks like they've got it sorted, right?
- 28:37SPEAKER_00: That they've got everything to be well.
- 28:41SPEAKER_00: And nine times out of ten, they're feeling exactly as we are.
- 28:44SPEAKER_00: So I think as entrepreneurs, we get to lean into each other and really support each other and go, okay, what do you need right now?
- 28:50SPEAKER_00: How can I support you with that?
- 28:51SPEAKER_00: We have blind spots, we can't see things for ourselves often.
- 28:55SPEAKER_00: And when we reach out or when we have these types of conversations where we can look at things from a different perspective, maybe a different realization about who we're being and how we're being lands, then we get to make conscious choices about, okay, so what's working, what's not working?
- 29:11SPEAKER_00: And who do I want to become?
- 29:14SPEAKER_00: You know, which parts of what I'm doing right now, who I'm being right now, feel really aligned and which parts don't.
- 29:21SPEAKER_00: And often it can be those voices in our head that we're listening to rather than the one that comes from our heart and our gut that kind of is really trying to lead us in the direction that we want to go.
- 29:32SPEAKER_00: And so I think those types of habits and behaviours we get to reframe so that we can start to come out the other side of this.
- 29:42SPEAKER_00: And I love that you mention empowerment because it does feel very disempowering when we're in that place.
- 29:48SPEAKER_00: It is disempowering to sink into blaming things outside of ourselves.
- 29:53SPEAKER_00: And I often say no blame, shame, guilt, or fault.
- 29:56SPEAKER_00: And that means, you know, no judgment for ourselves or others.
- 29:59SPEAKER_00: Really difficult to do because as human beings, we are often in the judgment space when we don't realize we are.
- 30:05SPEAKER_00: And I think it's really critical to not judge ourselves, first of all, because as entrepreneurs, that's the first thing we do.
- 30:11SPEAKER_00: We're so hard on ourselves.
- 30:13SPEAKER_00: We really get to forgive ourselves and and release ourselves from the burden of that, and then also judging others.
- 30:20SPEAKER_00: Like I say, we think others have got it figured out, or we get into comparisonitis, and that holds us because then we're in a space of that blame and shame, and it's a negative loop.
- 30:31SPEAKER_00: And so we do get the chance to reframe in every moment.
- 30:34SPEAKER_00: And I think I told you the other day I had an incident where a lady backed into my car.
- 30:39SPEAKER_00: She wasn't looking where she was going.
- 30:41SPEAKER_00: Luckily, it wasn't very fast.
- 30:43SPEAKER_00: She backed into the main road and right at the last minute kept going, and I managed to pull out a little bit, but she scraped my car and pulled over.
- 30:52SPEAKER_00: We did the normal thing, and she was shaking.
- 30:55SPEAKER_00: You know, she was late for an appointment, she didn't know where she was, it was an unfamiliar place for her, she was parked in the wrong place.
- 31:03SPEAKER_00: Now I had a choice in that moment.
- 31:05SPEAKER_00: I could have been really annoyed that there's damage on my car.
- 31:08SPEAKER_00: And I looked at her and I thought, what does she need right now?
- 31:11SPEAKER_00: I mean, she was shaking so much she couldn't put her name and her contact details in my phone.
- 31:14SPEAKER_00: Oh, took her by the hand and said, Please breathe.
- 31:17SPEAKER_00: Nobody has been hurt making parachutes.
- 31:20SPEAKER_00: It's a small scrape, the insurance will sort it out.
- 31:23SPEAKER_00: Where do you need to be?
- 31:24SPEAKER_00: Just take a moment to just stop.
- 31:27SPEAKER_00: And maybe that was the point in her day that got to impact her and reframe things in a different way.
- 31:34SPEAKER_00: And as I got back in the car, I also thought to myself, right, well, I also have another conscious choice now.
- 31:39SPEAKER_00: It was interesting because it happened in a flash, but it was very interesting, it was very conscious.
- 31:44SPEAKER_00: And this is this is where I want, you know, kind of when we say conscious choice, this is what it really means.
- 31:48SPEAKER_00: Like in that moment, I could have thought to myself, and this often is our default position, like, oh no, another thing to add to my to-do list, right?
- 31:57SPEAKER_00: Another thing that I get to sort out on my never-ending list of things.
- 32:01SPEAKER_00: And as a single mother, and as you know, parents, there'll be lots of parents listening, as entrepreneurs juggling a multitude of different things, spinning a million different plates, it feels overwhelming.
- 32:12SPEAKER_00: And at that point, I was like, I could choose to see it that way, but I choose to think about it differently.
- 32:18SPEAKER_00: This is an opportunity.
- 32:19SPEAKER_00: Yes, I get to sort out the damage to my car.
- 32:23SPEAKER_00: But I also open myself up to the possibilities that I couldn't see in that moment.
- 32:28SPEAKER_00: The possibilities that maybe I made the difference in her day, and that's all she needed because she wasn't going to go on to have an even worse crash.
- 32:34SPEAKER_00: And Dean me helped her reset.
- 32:37SPEAKER_00: That would be my ultimate goal, of course, to have that level of impact.
- 32:40SPEAKER_00: And I hope that it helped her in some way.
- 32:42SPEAKER_00: But also from the perspective of getting back in my car and thinking, there might be something else here that I'm not seeing.
- 32:48SPEAKER_00: And as I contacted the insurance company, they've offered me a hire car, and I've got some long journeys that I get to take over the next month, and that will really support me.
- 32:57SPEAKER_00: Maybe that's the thing that I needed.
- 32:59SPEAKER_00: So I think we get to inside the box.
- 33:02SPEAKER_00: We get to think, okay, maybe there's other forces at work here that I don't know.
- 33:06SPEAKER_00: But if I'm choosing to lean into opportunity and possibility, even when the circumstances are challenging, and choose differently in that moment, not only did it lighten it, because then it didn't mean that I was in a bad mood and then going to others and bringing some negativity, it also meant that I'm setting the intention to allow what I don't know is going to happen to happen.
- 33:28SPEAKER_00: So the how bit that I was talking about.
- 33:30SPEAKER_00: And I think that's really powerful.
- 33:32SPEAKER_00: And that it felt empowering in that moment that actually, you know, I got to lean in, set my intention, be positive, create an impact, help the lady that was there, help myself, and look at things in a different way.
- 33:46SPEAKER_00: And I think that perspective often helps us.
- 33:48SPEAKER_00: It can feel like a really subtle change.
- 33:50SPEAKER_00: We're often looking for this really drastic, dynamic thing, and the subtle differences built up over time are what will create a different reality and those big changes in the world.
- 34:02SPEAKER_01: Oh, I love that.
- 34:03SPEAKER_01: I really do love that because I think what comes through is that kindness that you were able to display and that sort of shifted mindset had a real positive impact on not only that lady that through no fault of her own, I mean this thing, accidents happen, but sometimes when accidents do happen, we feel so bad about the fact that we've made these accidents as though we possess these superpowers where we should never create any accidents or anything.
- 34:33SPEAKER_01: So I think the fact that you showed her that kindness hopefully would have made such a difference to how she was feeling, but also, like you say, the opportunity that then arose for you, which had you framed it differently, could have been a different outcome.
- 34:50SPEAKER_01: So I I love that because it just goes to show that mindset and how we choose to use it can have this tremendous effect on not only how we feel but how we show up and how we behave and how we impact other people.
- 35:09SPEAKER_00: Exactly that.
- 35:10SPEAKER_00: I think in these moments we get to really lean in and choose who we're being.
- 35:17SPEAKER_00: And for me, leaning in and leading with kindness, it has to be number one.
- 35:21SPEAKER_00: If I stand fully in the leader that I'm being in the work that I do, I want to make a difference in people's lives.
- 35:29SPEAKER_00: Now, if that is in a short exchange with somebody who I've never met before and probably will never meet again, what we're talking about is the ripple effect.
- 35:39SPEAKER_00: Who knows where that might lead?
- 35:40SPEAKER_00: And often we don't.
- 35:42SPEAKER_00: And it can be the small, small difference that makes the big difference overall.
- 35:48SPEAKER_00: And it's really important then to consider what we're opening ourselves up to, the opportunities that opens us up to in terms of who we're being.
- 35:56SPEAKER_00: We get to really double down on that and think about well, how do I want to show up?
- 36:00SPEAKER_00: Who do I get to be through these moments?
- 36:02SPEAKER_00: Who do I want my children to see me being as we negotiate and reframe, reset through challenging times or whatever we're experiencing, and the differences in each moment.
- 36:14SPEAKER_00: And what I love to remind myself of, as well as my clients, is that each moment is a new moment.
- 36:20SPEAKER_00: You know, we get to forgive ourselves and reset.
- 36:22SPEAKER_00: We get to release, forgive ourselves, reset.
- 36:24SPEAKER_00: And often we dwell on things, and by definition, we then create more of the same.
- 36:30SPEAKER_00: And what we need to do is reframe it in that way.
- 36:33SPEAKER_00: Well, what am I choosing now?
- 36:34SPEAKER_00: What am I choosing now?
- 36:35SPEAKER_00: And really step into that.
- 36:37SPEAKER_00: What am I seeing around me?
- 36:38SPEAKER_00: And then look underneath what's really going on for you.
- 36:41SPEAKER_00: So we're getting into a deeper dive.
- 36:43SPEAKER_00: It's not just you know the surface layers here, like really consciously choosing what that is and who it is that you get to become.
- 36:50SPEAKER_00: And I think this is something we get to double down on, particularly at the moment, and support each other with.
- 36:55SPEAKER_00: Again, as I say, these aren't conversations we have on our own where we can see outside of our map of the world.
- 37:01SPEAKER_00: Often we need someone else to point out those blind spots so that we can look at the opportunities and the possibilities that are there in a different way.
- 37:09SPEAKER_01: I agree.
- 37:10SPEAKER_01: I think bringing different perspectives to the table can make a huge difference because when you're caught up in your own thoughts, and like you say, you know, you see the world how you see it.
- 37:26SPEAKER_01: I think sometimes being able to see things from a different perspective can be really powerful, and it can be what helps you to sort of move forward, especially in this time where it does feel challenging and there is going to be change ahead.
- 37:42SPEAKER_01: If you're there almost caught up in those negative spiraling thoughts that are leading you to maybe want to hide away, then now more than ever, we need that power of community so that we bring people together to have conversations that can make a difference to people's life, essentially, because it's what will make the difference between almost like say hiding away and wanting to give up, or sitting in that place of fear as opposed to showing up as the person that you want to be and working towards the things that you want to achieve.
- 38:26SPEAKER_01: You know, there's a different behaviour there, and so I think now more than ever, we need to be choosing to go to that place of abundance and opportunity as opposed to reveling in the doom and gloom that we're constantly being exposed to.
- 38:45SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and I think that's the key, really, when we find ourselves there, because inevitably we will at the moment, we will all be experiencing that at some point in our day, our week, our month as we go forward.
- 38:55SPEAKER_00: And the opportunity is to then think to yourself, well, how do I get to reframe this right now?
- 39:01SPEAKER_00: What am I choosing?
- 39:02SPEAKER_00: Who do I get to be?
- 39:03SPEAKER_00: And I love also that you mentioned community, because there's unity in community, and we've had direct experience of that over the last two and a half years where a lot of communities have come together through the difficulties that people have been facing and continue to face.
- 39:19SPEAKER_00: I mean, there's no taking away from that, but there's so much power and strength in that and in supporting each other, and I think we often think we have to do it on our own.
- 39:29SPEAKER_00: You know, we have to earn the badge of martyrdom and managing all of the things all of the time.
- 39:35SPEAKER_00: We're not actually designed as humans to do that.
- 39:38SPEAKER_00: We're programmed for connection and we're programmed to support each other in elevating each other, you know, lifting each other up.
- 39:43SPEAKER_00: A rising tide lifts all boats.
- 39:46SPEAKER_00: And I think that's what we get to do now as well.
- 39:48SPEAKER_00: We get to really think about okay, so how can I reframe?
- 39:52SPEAKER_00: How can I choose differently in the moment?
- 39:54SPEAKER_00: Who am I being?
- 39:55SPEAKER_00: And if I'm really struggling, I get to reach out to a friend and go, can we just have a chat?
- 40:01SPEAKER_00: I need to work through this piece.
- 40:03SPEAKER_00: I'm not seeing something, and so there is another perspective, somebody else that can build us up as well, because we're so hard on ourselves.
- 40:11SPEAKER_00: And in those moments, sometimes it can feel like that spiral, and we can catch ourselves in it.
- 40:16SPEAKER_00: So there is a habit piece around this to be really mindful of okay, so where are these thoughts coming from?
- 40:23SPEAKER_00: Are they those inner voices that tell me not very nice things about myself and what I'm doing and who I'm being, because that's not part of who you really are.
- 40:30SPEAKER_00: Those are what we call in coaching saboteurs or nerds, and there's imposter syndrome in that as well.
- 40:37SPEAKER_00: And we get to choose, and this is what I coach my clients on as well, we get to choose how we manage that, to really recognize that they're they're part of the fear, they're part of what keeps us small, they're the disempowering part that you were talking about earlier on.
- 40:51SPEAKER_00: And our choice then is to go, you know what, I don't choose to agree with you.
- 40:55SPEAKER_00: I'm going to go this way.
- 40:57SPEAKER_00: And sometimes we need a helping hand to do that as well, you know, to really be able to turn up the dial and go, no, this is who I'm being, this is the way that I'm going.
- 41:05SPEAKER_00: I'm consciously choosing to reframe it in a different way.
- 41:08SPEAKER_00: And sometimes we need a pattern interrupt.
- 41:09SPEAKER_00: If we're thinking about, you know, going back to what we were saying about the money mindset and the lack and scarcity, and there's not enough, and there's not going to be enough, and everything's contracting, that's all around us, you know, there will still be people who will thrive, there will still be people making a lot of money, but it's very difficult when we're presented with that narrative.
- 41:27SPEAKER_01: Yes, I love what you're talking about here actually, because you're absolutely right.
- 41:31SPEAKER_01: I think we can't do it alone, and I think we have to come together and we have to be there for each other and support each other because that's how we're going to get through.
- 41:42SPEAKER_01: And you're absolutely right.
- 41:44SPEAKER_01: I don't think for a moment that we're meant to do this alone.
- 41:46SPEAKER_01: I don't even think that as entrepreneurs we're meant to do this entrepreneurial journey alone.
- 41:52SPEAKER_01: I think we need to be connected to others that understand and who are going through it as well.
- 42:00SPEAKER_01: And during this time of change, reaching out and talking about the things that may be causing you fear or worry, I think is really important because that's what's going to help you shift your perspective and how you're feeling, and also give you a way forward in terms of what you can do to really support yourself through this period of uncertainty.
- 42:29SPEAKER_01: Rachel, we've covered some amazing stuff today, and I'm so grateful the fact that you've come on and you've really sort of shared your thoughts and given us some really great nuggets of coaching, really.
- 42:44SPEAKER_01: You've shared your coaching with us because I think it's going to make such a difference in terms of how people feel.
- 42:52SPEAKER_01: I think one thing that I most definitely take away from this episode is the fact that it all starts and it ends with our mindset and being able to control how we feel and do things that really kind of support how we feel and how we're showing up and making those conscious decisions about what that then looks like.
- 43:16SPEAKER_01: Rachel, thank you so much for sharing your wisdom and for letting us in on the greatness that you bring to the table.
- 43:27SPEAKER_01: I absolutely love listening to what you have to say because I just literally sit here nodding my head and you explain it in such a beautiful way that really does learn.
- 43:39SPEAKER_01: So thank you for being a part of today's episode and sharing what it is you have to share with us.
- 43:45SPEAKER_00: Well, thank you for having me.
- 43:46SPEAKER_00: I'm the other end nodding as well, Karen, because you uh you likewise have such great insight and we always have these tremendously consciously connected conversations and they're so uplifting and energizing, and I know We're saying at the end there about leaning into each other and community and supporting each other.
- 44:05SPEAKER_00: This is what it means to do that.
- 44:07SPEAKER_00: This is really what it means to do that.
- 44:09SPEAKER_00: And just before we go, there was a couple of things that I wanted to land with people, just in case there's some tips and techniques that we can share that will support the listeners.
- 44:18SPEAKER_00: And one thing that I learned through the last year or so through my business support is writing out a list of 50 ways that we can make money right now and get to the 50, because it is a pokey exercise to do.
- 44:30SPEAKER_00: And then, as we've been talking about through this session, take a conscious breath.
- 44:35SPEAKER_00: Just stop in the moment.
- 44:37SPEAKER_00: Take a conscious breath that things are feeling difficult and overwhelming, and forgive yourself of the thoughts that you're having and consciously choose how you want to move forward next.
- 44:47SPEAKER_00: It's almost like that instant reframe: like, okay, I'm breathing, I'm going to stop.
- 44:54SPEAKER_00: Who do I get to be?
- 44:55SPEAKER_00: How am I showing up now?
- 44:56SPEAKER_00: What is it that I'm choosing?
- 44:57SPEAKER_00: It may be you reach for the phone and you call someone, it may be you go make a cup of coffee, maybe you go for a 10-minute walk to reset and shift in the moment so that you can not be overwhelmed and get into that spiral of negativity or invested in the lack and scarcity and reframe yourself in a way that opens you up to different possibilities and different opportunities.
- 45:20SPEAKER_00: We could keep going because there's so much here with what we've been talking about today.
- 45:25SPEAKER_00: But thank you so much for having me on the podcast.
- 45:28SPEAKER_00: It's been an absolute pleasure.
- 45:29SPEAKER_00: I know we'll get to do it again soon, I hope.
- 45:31SPEAKER_01: Yeah, absolutely.
- 45:32SPEAKER_01: I'm definitely going to have you on again because I know we've got so much more good stuff to talk about, and we haven't even scratched the surface, so there's lots of juicy things that's going to come up in future episodes.
- 45:46SPEAKER_01: But I just wanted to take this opportunity to thank you for coming on board today.
- 45:51SPEAKER_01: We did have some tech issues, and I do appreciate you being really patient and um sticking with me because you know it can be very trying at times.
- 46:03SPEAKER_01: I love tech, but um there are times when I am nearly thrown out of the window.
- 46:09SPEAKER_00: So thank you so much.
- 46:10SPEAKER_00: Absolutely.
- 46:11SPEAKER_00: You're so welcome.
- 46:12SPEAKER_00: We did talk about this, didn't we, Karen?
- 46:14SPEAKER_00: That it's been like life imitating art.
- 46:16SPEAKER_00: Yeah, absolutely.
- 46:17SPEAKER_00: How many times have we tried to be recording?
- 46:20SPEAKER_00: We've had hours worth of conversations around this subject, and the tech has not been with us.
- 46:26SPEAKER_00: But interesting because we also had the conversation then.
- 46:29SPEAKER_00: What is it that we're creating?
- 46:31SPEAKER_00: And I just wondered whether it was life imitating art that actually the difficulty in the recording of a session about the difficulty that we're facing in the world in terms of the recession and what's happening really does make us think about our perseverance, what we're consciously choosing, the resilience we've built, the strength we have, how we can empower each other, and how we can through adversity overcome, you know, and create something hopefully that is impactful for your listeners.
- 47:01SPEAKER_00: So it was a beautiful way of the universe showing us that life imitates art.
- 47:07SPEAKER_00: Look at what you're creating, and we've just created a microcosm of what's happening and what exactly what we're talking about.
- 47:13SPEAKER_00: So it's been powerful.
- 47:14SPEAKER_01: Yeah, absolutely.
- 47:15SPEAKER_01: It's forcing us to walk our talk and to really dive into what it is we're wanting to achieve and to kind of almost find that resilience to keep going.
- 47:28SPEAKER_01: Because obviously, at times, my goodness, it can be so trying just to get something working, and actually, we've arrived, we've got here, we've done it.
- 47:40SPEAKER_00: And I just want actually, it's reminded me, Karen.
- 47:42SPEAKER_00: It's reminded me it gets to be messy.
- 47:44SPEAKER_00: We're talking about this yesterday, and it has felt like the messiest thing, it's probably one of the messiests that you've created, but actually, that's what we often don't lean into as entrepreneurs as well.
- 47:56SPEAKER_00: And I said yesterday, you know, it's not about ready, aim, fire, it's ready firing.
- 48:00SPEAKER_00: So we've just been firing uh non-stop in order to create it.
- 48:04SPEAKER_00: And I know that the processes will filter out the other end and you'll be able to create a beautiful podcast from this, but it has been messy in the process, and sometimes we get to embrace the messiness, and it doesn't feel great in the moment, and we get to trust and lean into that process.
- 48:20SPEAKER_00: So there is a beautiful piece here about reminding you and I that we get to trust and let go as we create, as we show up, as we are intentional about who we're being in order to make the difference for others, which I know is so close to both of our hearts.
- 48:33SPEAKER_01: Absolutely.
- 48:34SPEAKER_01: Do you know what?
- 48:35SPEAKER_01: I'm getting comfortable with being uncomfortable, it just seems to be the state of play at the moment, and I'm I'm all with it.
- 48:42SPEAKER_01: Yeah, absolutely.
- 48:43SPEAKER_01: I'm just going with it, to be honest.
- 48:44SPEAKER_01: I'm going with it.
- 48:45SPEAKER_01: I feel if things are meant to happen, they'll happen, and it's okay for things to be messy.
- 48:51SPEAKER_01: Sometimes, as you put it, sometimes the messier the better, because it's what's born out of that messiness, and I've no doubt that this episode will come together, it will make it all lovely, but it has been a very messy approach to it.
- 49:11SPEAKER_00: It's been messy, and and I think you know, that's a beautiful point to end on, you know, being uncomfortable, getting comfortable with being uncomfortable.
- 49:18SPEAKER_00: That's what change is all about, that's what growth and expansion is all about, that's what thinking outside the box is all about, stretching outside the edges that we've created in our map of the world and looking at things from a different perspective.
- 49:30SPEAKER_00: And I think we get to do that.
- 49:32SPEAKER_00: And this is, I've said life imitating art, but it's these stories, you know, kind of this experience that we've lived having produced this podcast together, that has really brought that to life.
- 49:43SPEAKER_00: And I hope it brings it to life for the listeners as well, because this is where we get to notice what's happening around us and get curious about okay, so how can I use this in a way that's really positive?
- 49:54SPEAKER_00: And I think we've done exactly that.
- 49:55SPEAKER_00: And the message for you and I, and hopefully for the listeners, getting comfortable with being uncomfortable and being in that messy space so that we can really lean in and create things in the way that we want to, and being deliberate.
- 50:05SPEAKER_00: I think it's a beautiful way to end just deliberate frame the podcast.
- 50:09SPEAKER_01: Yeah, absolutely.
- 50:10SPEAKER_01: I think you are absolutely spot on then.
- 50:12SPEAKER_01: Being comfortable with being uncomfortable, absolutely brilliant.
- 50:17SPEAKER_01: Because that's life.
- 50:18SPEAKER_01: That's life.
- 50:19SPEAKER_01: It's not always going to go the way we want it, but it's okay because great things can come from that discomfort.
- 50:28SPEAKER_01: So, so yes.
- 50:29SPEAKER_01: Thank you so much for coming on board today, and I really hope that the listeners have gained the value from this that we both have intended.
