- 0:00Speaker 1: Could go from you being extremely positive to you being
- 0:03Speaker 1: extremely negative, to you being controversial, to you.
- 0:06Speaker 2: Just sharing your day to day.
- 0:08Speaker 1: I choose to be on the positive side, choose to
- 0:11Speaker 1: be positive and uplifting and just show my day to
- 0:15Speaker 1: day life here in West Virginia as a Tarlestonian. Charleston
- 0:20Speaker 1: can come sometimes get a negative rep and I absolutely
- 0:22Speaker 1: can't stand that. So I try to be the person
- 0:24Speaker 1: to uplift our community.
- 0:25Speaker 3: Now you a native Charlestonian.
- 0:27Speaker 1: Yes, I'm actually from Rand originally, so yes, I'm originally
- 0:31Speaker 1: born and raised and Ran, and then I have lived
- 0:34Speaker 1: in North Charleston all of my adults.
- 0:36Speaker 4: You know, recently, I think like a week or so
- 0:39Speaker 4: ago ESPN two, I think it was just reran the
- 0:42Speaker 4: Rand University and I actually watched it again. I watched
- 0:45Speaker 4: it when it was new and it came out like
- 0:46Speaker 4: what ten twelve years ago, but they reran it. I
- 0:50Speaker 4: was slipping through the channels on the weekend. I saw
- 0:52Speaker 4: that and I watched it again. It's very good documentary.
- 0:54Speaker 3: It really was. When we're going to do a documentary
- 0:56Speaker 3: about North Charleston.
- 0:57Speaker 2: Ooh, I don't know, but that would be good. They
- 0:59Speaker 2: call that dog.
- 1:00Speaker 4: Town and yeah, I know I learned that doing this show,
- 1:03Speaker 4: and you would be a great person for that. You know,
- 1:06Speaker 4: there are influencers all over the world, but I think
- 1:09Speaker 4: that we have the fact we have some base here
- 1:10Speaker 4: in Charleston is pretty cool. How did you get into
- 1:13Speaker 4: this whole thing?
- 1:15Speaker 2: Honestly, just organically. It wasn't planned.
- 1:19Speaker 1: I literally just started sharing local news, uplifting local businesses,
- 1:24Speaker 1: especially the new businesses, and I just started. My page
- 1:28Speaker 1: just started growing drastically. I did recently create a new
- 1:32Speaker 1: page that's so jam Fancy, so you can follow me
- 1:35Speaker 1: at Jessica A. Martin or so jam Fancy either one.
- 1:38Speaker 1: I'm going to be sharing uplifting things, positive things, and
- 1:43Speaker 1: a lot of local things as well, just because that's
- 1:47Speaker 1: where my heart is. But as far as like how
- 1:50Speaker 1: I got started or what made me started, it's it's
- 1:54Speaker 1: nothing new and I just am just myself. I really
- 1:58Speaker 1: didn't expect any of this, so it's really crazy and
- 2:01Speaker 1: it's coming full circle because I used to make everybody's
- 2:03Speaker 1: MySpace layout and you know, all those little fun things,
- 2:07Speaker 1: and it's just all come full circle now. So as
- 2:10Speaker 1: far as how I did it, there's not really like
- 2:13Speaker 1: a you know, a secret prost on how to do it.
- 2:17Speaker 1: I just suggest being yourself, being consistent, and you'll eventually
- 2:21Speaker 1: grow your following.
- 2:22Speaker 4: Now, you said that you choose to do mostly positive things,
- 2:26Speaker 4: and I've followed you for some time and that's pretty
- 2:29Speaker 4: much all I've seen you in a world where it
- 2:31Speaker 4: seems like we thrive on negativity and that's what keeps
- 2:34Speaker 4: social media going.
- 2:35Speaker 3: Why do you choose the positive?
- 2:37Speaker 1: I just feel like there are so many people that
- 2:39Speaker 1: need it, and a lot of those people that do
- 2:42Speaker 1: focus on the negative need that positive aspect to uplift them.
- 2:46Speaker 1: So I choose to be the light and choose to
- 2:47Speaker 1: be the person that brings that positivity to them.
- 2:50Speaker 4: How many followers approximately do you have? Because I know
- 2:52Speaker 4: you've been in the studio for ten minutes, so you
- 2:54Speaker 4: probably increased while you were here, But approximately how many follows?
- 2:57Speaker 2: I have almost thirty six thousand followers on Facebook?
- 3:00Speaker 3: What and how much? What was the amount of time
- 3:02Speaker 3: it took you to get to thirty successes?
- 3:04Speaker 1: So I have been monetized on Facebook for almost four years,
- 3:08Speaker 1: so a lot of people are new to monetization on
- 3:10Speaker 1: social media, and all I.
- 3:13Speaker 2: Can say is just be consistent.
- 3:16Speaker 1: I honestly it took me four years, but I didn't
- 3:19Speaker 1: start taking it very serious until the last year. Other
- 3:23Speaker 1: than that, it was just me posting all the time
- 3:25Speaker 1: and uplifting businesses and doing different things like that. And
- 3:28Speaker 1: then like within the last year, I was like, you
- 3:30Speaker 1: know what, this is crazy, Like my following is going
- 3:32Speaker 1: really fast, Like I really need to start focusing more
- 3:34Speaker 1: on this. So I've kind of really taken the lead
- 3:37Speaker 1: and like started being a little more serious.
- 3:39Speaker 4: Now, how does one get into the monetizing of social
- 3:43Speaker 4: media posts?
- 3:43Speaker 1: So it's very different now. Used to be invite only.
- 3:46Speaker 1: I got invited almost four years ago.
- 3:48Speaker 3: Who invites you? Is it meta?
- 3:50Speaker 2: Okay, yeah, mata is who invites you?
- 3:52Speaker 1: And I think now to get in the content monetization program,
- 3:55Speaker 1: you do still have to be invited, and there are
- 3:56Speaker 1: certain criteria like how many followers, you have to have,
- 4:00Speaker 1: certain amount of engagement, all of those things before they'll
- 4:02Speaker 1: actually monetize you on social media. So the first key
- 4:05Speaker 1: is just to start posting consistently and authentically.
- 4:08Speaker 4: And there's so much news even in an area, and
- 4:11Speaker 4: you focus primarily on Charleston and the surrounding areas, but
- 4:14Speaker 4: there's so much news out there.
- 4:15Speaker 3: How do you choose what it is that you that
- 4:17Speaker 3: you post for that.
- 4:18Speaker 2: I'm really cheesy. I don't like political things.
- 4:21Speaker 1: I don't like anything too controversial in a bad light
- 4:24Speaker 1: at least, and I pretty much just I don't know.
- 4:27Speaker 1: If I see a new business is coming, I try
- 4:29Speaker 1: to uplift them. If I see a business as maybe
- 4:32Speaker 1: struggling to stay open, I try to uplift them.
- 4:35Speaker 2: And then as far as news.
- 4:36Speaker 1: Wise, it's anything that could stop somebody from getting somewhere.
- 4:42Speaker 1: So if there's a traffic alert, if there's something where
- 4:44Speaker 1: there's a missing child, anything that could possibly help someone,
- 4:48Speaker 1: and I know that I have the platform for it.
- 4:50Speaker 4: I try to talk to Jessica Martin again. It's nine
- 4:53Speaker 4: point fifteen to Dave Island Show in five eighty line,
- 4:55Speaker 4: brought to you part by your hometown baseball team, the
- 4:57Speaker 4: Charleston Dirty Birds. What a time now, but we're thinking
- 4:59Speaker 4: about base all over at Gomart Ballpark now. It'd be
- 5:01Speaker 4: a great time to get your season tickets for the
- 5:04Speaker 4: upcoming twenty twenty six season. You can also pick up
- 5:06Speaker 4: your merchandise and more at dirty Birds baseball dot com.
- 5:09Speaker 4: Last week, on social media and on the airwaves here
- 5:12Speaker 4: Big story was the mayor's comments during city Council during
- 5:16Speaker 4: her State of the City addressed at the City of
- 5:18Speaker 4: Charleston hoping to enter into talks with the owners of
- 5:20Speaker 4: the towns that are all the whole group about the
- 5:22Speaker 4: city taking over the mall, and that really got comments
- 5:26Speaker 4: a blazon on your page.
- 5:30Speaker 3: How did you choose?
- 5:31Speaker 4: Because there was and look I heard it on this show.
- 5:34Speaker 4: I got off the text line here on my social
- 5:36Speaker 4: media as well, there where everybody's got an opinion. But
- 5:40Speaker 4: how did you separate that into Okay, this is positive,
- 5:42Speaker 4: this is not be And even said a couple of
- 5:44Speaker 4: times I was following you that night. You even said
- 5:47Speaker 4: something that let's keep it positive, let's keep it positive.
- 5:49Speaker 4: How difficult was that?
- 5:51Speaker 1: So we all want the mall, you know, we all
- 5:54Speaker 1: want them all to be something successful. And my thinking
- 5:57Speaker 1: of all of it is, you know, the mall is
- 5:59Speaker 1: not going to be what it was when I was
- 6:02Speaker 1: a kid and we would go to the mall movies
- 6:04Speaker 1: and shop and all the things. It's a whole new
- 6:06Speaker 1: time frame now, a whole new generation of kids, and
- 6:11Speaker 1: anybody that can be positive about what's to come for
- 6:14Speaker 1: the Charlestontown Center. I think it's just insane. I think
- 6:17Speaker 1: it's selfish. I think we should all want the best
- 6:20Speaker 1: for that area, that space. It may not even be
- 6:23Speaker 1: that same building in the end, you know. So I
- 6:27Speaker 1: just try to stay as positive as I can on
- 6:30Speaker 1: my page and let people know if you us something
- 6:32Speaker 1: negative to say, that's why you have your own news.
- 6:34Speaker 2: City takes ring it to mine, Yes, Dot's ring it
- 6:36Speaker 2: to mine. Take that on somewhere else.
- 6:39Speaker 4: And I think one of the things we talked about
- 6:40Speaker 4: this in the show last week is everybody thinks that
- 6:42Speaker 4: they've got a great idea. And when I had Mayor
- 6:44Speaker 4: good one on the show last week, she talked about it.
- 6:46Speaker 4: She said, Hey, we appreciate the ideas, but the truth is,
- 6:49Speaker 4: if we bring in a blank fill in name here,
- 6:52Speaker 4: you know, whether it's you know, David Busters or whatever,
- 6:56Speaker 4: it's not going to save the town Center.
- 6:58Speaker 3: It's not right. I mean you exactly.
- 6:59Speaker 4: And it's and multi use is where it's going to
- 7:01Speaker 4: probably head if this deal works out, where you're gonna
- 7:03Speaker 4: have a variety of things, you're gonna have off the space,
- 7:05Speaker 4: You're gonna have living space. It like you and I'm
- 7:08Speaker 4: a bit I'm a lot older than you. It's not
- 7:10Speaker 4: going to be the Charleston Town Center of nineteen eighty
- 7:13Speaker 4: eight ever again, and we need to get that out
- 7:16Speaker 4: of our heads. I'm not trying to be negative. I'm
- 7:17Speaker 4: being a realistic.
- 7:18Speaker 2: Exactly that's exactly right.
- 7:20Speaker 1: And I mean, I think that it's a huge space
- 7:23Speaker 1: and there are so many different things that could be
- 7:25Speaker 1: done with that space. And I have faith and trust
- 7:28Speaker 1: and Amy and the City of Charleston that they will
- 7:31Speaker 1: make the best decision for our kids. It's really about
- 7:34Speaker 1: our kids now. It's not really about us that much anymore.
- 7:37Speaker 1: You know, we're all oldies now, so it's really about
- 7:40Speaker 1: what we can bring to our kids. Think about how
- 7:42Speaker 1: many memories that we have. They're ass kids. We want
- 7:45Speaker 1: that same type of experience for our kids. But modern
- 7:49Speaker 1: day of course.
- 7:50Speaker 3: Ye, what else is positive? That's keeping you busy these days?
- 7:54Speaker 2: Into Charleston area, Oh, all kinds of things.
- 7:56Speaker 1: I was invited to Carnival, so that's exciting. I have
- 7:59Speaker 1: to get them their shout out. Make sure you get
- 8:01Speaker 1: your tickets to Carnival because that does fund a lot
- 8:04Speaker 1: of different programs that they had at the case.
- 8:07Speaker 4: We talked about it on the area yesterday and if you're
- 8:09Speaker 4: going to get your tickets.
- 8:09Speaker 3: You need to do so the next couple they do
- 8:11Speaker 3: sell out.
- 8:12Speaker 1: So I have Carnival coming up, and of course I'm
- 8:15Speaker 1: always looking forward to the Regatta. A lot of people
- 8:18Speaker 1: don't realize that I am the owner of fancy five
- 8:20Speaker 1: buck fashion as well, and I do a lot of
- 8:22Speaker 1: the fares and festivals that are here local, so I
- 8:25Speaker 1: sell five dollars accessory. So if you go to those
- 8:28Speaker 1: fares and festivals, which you should, you'll see me there
- 8:30Speaker 1: with my booth.
- 8:31Speaker 4: And I want to have Brian Hughes, the Regatta chair,
- 8:33Speaker 4: is gonna be on a little bit later on the
- 8:34Speaker 4: show to talk about where we are as we move
- 8:36Speaker 4: into the regatta, because when you wake up with temperatures
- 8:39Speaker 4: at like twenty three or twenty four degrees, you're like
- 8:41Speaker 4: I was talking about the dirty Birds early. You're thinking baseball,
- 8:44Speaker 4: you're thinking and you're thinking regatta. Oh, by the way,
- 8:47Speaker 4: I had a text here, And normally the text of
- 8:49Speaker 4: the show are anonymous. We don't know who they are,
- 8:51Speaker 4: but sometimes people will text my personal phone here, so
- 8:53Speaker 4: I don't care. I don't think this person would care
- 8:55Speaker 4: if I read this or I read this. Jessica Martin
- 8:57Speaker 4: is a former student, and I'm so proud of her.
- 8:59Speaker 3: She's always so positive. From Fred Albert, Oh, oh.
- 9:02Speaker 2: My gosh, I love Fred Albert.
- 9:04Speaker 1: He was my teacher in let me think, sixth grade
- 9:07Speaker 1: at DuPont and oh my goodness, he I literally first
- 9:12Speaker 1: of all, we have a relationship so great that I
- 9:14Speaker 1: called him my dad in middle school and he still
- 9:17Speaker 1: calls me his daughter. I'm shocked he didn't call me
- 9:18Speaker 1: his daughter in that text message. But he's one of
- 9:21Speaker 1: those teachers that you'll never forget, like I'll never forget him.
- 9:24Speaker 1: He was literally so such a great teacher, and math
- 9:28Speaker 1: has always been my strong suit. I'm just such a
- 9:31Speaker 1: nerd and he just we bonded because of that.
- 9:34Speaker 2: He loves math.
- 9:35Speaker 1: I loved math, and he was just wonderful. And then
- 9:37Speaker 1: still to this day he checks in on me like
- 9:39Speaker 1: he was just such an amazing teacher.
- 9:41Speaker 4: And you know, it's interesting when it comes to the
- 9:44Speaker 4: teachers that you remember, sometimes it's not about the lessons.
- 9:48Speaker 4: Some of my bat some of my favorite teachers, now
- 9:51Speaker 4: I don't know if they want to hear there's not
- 9:52Speaker 4: some of my favorite teachers in public school. I can't
- 9:55Speaker 4: really tell you a whole lot about their classroom. It's
- 9:57Speaker 4: the other things I learned from it, and I know
- 9:59Speaker 4: Fred is one of those.
- 10:01Speaker 2: He's the best. I already knew all the math.
- 10:03Speaker 3: I'm just lucky he gets credit.
- 10:05Speaker 4: Yeah, when it comes to me in math, I'm not
- 10:07Speaker 4: anything I can memorize. You give me a history book whatever.
- 10:10Speaker 4: I'm good, but anything math not so much. That's want
- 10:13Speaker 4: to end it up in the media. Remind people where
- 10:15Speaker 4: they can follow you in social media, because if you're
- 10:17Speaker 4: not following Jessica Martin, you need to.
- 10:19Speaker 1: So you can visit Jessica amartin dot com and it's
- 10:22Speaker 1: going to give you all of my social media links.
- 10:24Speaker 1: So Jessica amartin dot com and you can go. It'll
- 10:28Speaker 1: show you where are my TikTok pages, my Facebook, my
- 10:32Speaker 1: all the different social media platforms.
- 10:34Speaker 2: It's all listed on Justica Martin.
- 10:36Speaker 4: What is the hottest thing going as far as social media?
- 10:38Speaker 4: Because you know, forever it was Facebook and now Facebook's
- 10:40Speaker 4: kind of no. I say, Facebook's still the biggest and
- 10:42Speaker 4: there's a lot of people on it, and then x
- 10:44Speaker 4: or Twitter, and then it was Snapchat, Instagram, TikTok.
- 10:48Speaker 3: What's the new thing out there right now?
- 10:50Speaker 1: So I guess TikTok will be the number one, and
- 10:52Speaker 1: that's because the youth generation loves that the most. So
- 10:56Speaker 1: wherever the youth is, that's usually what's the most trending.
- 10:59Speaker 1: So my old bones are trying to get on there
- 11:01Speaker 1: a little bit more, even though I do love that
- 11:04Speaker 1: blue app called Facebook, but TikTok is definitely where most
- 11:08Speaker 1: people get on and scroll and scroll and scroll and
- 11:10Speaker 1: go down rabbit holes and all.
- 11:11Speaker 3: The things, you know.
- 11:13Speaker 4: And I'll close with this. There was a meme I
- 11:15Speaker 4: posted about once a year to remind people that it
- 11:17Speaker 4: was posted by some young person said, you know, if
- 11:20Speaker 4: only there were an app that would tell people in
- 11:23Speaker 4: real time what the news is, what the weather is,
- 11:25Speaker 4: things like that. And somebody responds, Oh, yeah, that's called radio.
- 11:28Speaker 4: You know, that's what we do. So you can embrace
- 11:31Speaker 4: all the new technology. But don't forget us folks here
- 11:33Speaker 4: in radio. We've been doing it for a long long
- 11:35Speaker 4: time and we try to do a great job.
- 11:38Speaker 3: Jessica, always a pleasure to have you on the show.
- 11:40Speaker 4: I do well, this is the first time I've had you,
- 11:42Speaker 4: but I'll tell you you're gonna be back on again because
- 11:43Speaker 4: I want I want you back on the show again.
- 11:45Speaker 3: Yeah, anytime. You're always welcome here.

- 15:15Speaker 4: Coming up a little bit later on. Also, Brian Hughes
- 15:17Speaker 4: is going to join his Brian. Although he's no longer
- 15:19Speaker 4: with the television station here in Charleston, Brian is still
- 15:22Speaker 4: very heavily involved in the community, including the Charleston starning
- 15:25Speaker 4: Will Regatta, and he is going to join us a
- 15:28Speaker 4: little bit later on as well to kind of let
- 15:30Speaker 4: us know about some planning for the regatta. Everybody always
- 15:33Speaker 4: wants to know where or when I should say, are
- 15:36Speaker 4: the new acts going to be announced to be coming
- 15:38Speaker 4: to regatta?
- 15:38Speaker 3: They're not quite ready for that yet. But we are
- 15:41Speaker 3: going to talk about.
- 15:42Speaker 4: Some other things related to Regatta, because I mean, if
- 15:44Speaker 4: it's in the middle of January and it's twenty three
- 15:47Speaker 4: degrees when you leave your house, you want to start
- 15:49Speaker 4: thinking about warm weather things. So we're going to talk
- 15:51Speaker 4: to Brian about that. Coming up a little bit later
- 15:54Speaker 4: on a reminder that tomorrow the West Virginia Legislature will
- 15:58Speaker 4: gavel in Metro News talk Line be Live with Wilson
- 16:01Speaker 4: to Meadows from there two or three times a week now.
- 16:04Speaker 4: This week they're gonna be there Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday.
- 16:08Speaker 4: They will be their life at the capitol though starting tomorrow.
- 16:12Speaker 4: The governor will give his State of the State tomorrow
- 16:15Speaker 4: night at seven. We're gonna have coverage on air and
- 16:18Speaker 4: on the Metro News TV app coming up tomorrow night.
- 16:23Speaker 4: And it's going to be interesting to see what happens
- 16:27Speaker 4: with this session this time, because I've been kind of
- 16:31Speaker 4: following this, you know, a couple of weeks ago, the
- 16:33Speaker 4: House came out, Speaker Roger Henshaw and the Republican Caucus
- 16:36Speaker 4: came out and they laid out their plans for the
- 16:39Speaker 4: upcoming session, and there seems to be a little, shall
- 16:43Speaker 4: we say, uncertainty when it comes to what the Senate's
- 16:49Speaker 4: going to do. And that on Friday, the Associated Press
- 16:54Speaker 4: and Westrdian Press Association, I think they do this thing
- 16:57Speaker 4: called the Legislative look Ahead and what they there were
- 17:03Speaker 4: some questions that came out of that. I don't think
- 17:05Speaker 4: that the Senate President, Randy Smith was an attendant to
- 17:08Speaker 4: think he had I was total he had a medical
- 17:09Speaker 4: thing going on or something. He wasn't there. So it
- 17:12Speaker 4: is it's gonna be interesting to see what the Senate is.
- 17:15Speaker 4: I mean from an outsider looking in, it looks like
- 17:17Speaker 4: the Senate may be a little I don't want to
- 17:19Speaker 4: say that they don't have a plan. I'm not saying that.
- 17:22Speaker 4: I'm just saying that they haven't presented one yet. And
- 17:25Speaker 4: that's okay. Uh, that's there. That's their prerogative. But it's
- 17:29Speaker 4: going to be interesting to see what the Senate is
- 17:32Speaker 4: going to do. And there are a lot of folks
- 17:34Speaker 4: that are going to be running for the State Senate
- 17:38Speaker 4: on the Republican side, trying to take out current senators.
- 17:41Speaker 8: Uh.
- 17:42Speaker 4: I know in one particular district, the district the directorias
- 17:45Speaker 4: and there is at least two of the Republicans that
- 17:49Speaker 4: are running, and sometimes when that happens, it ends up
- 17:52Speaker 4: working out well for the for the incumbents.
- 17:55Speaker 3: So we'll see what happens.
- 17:56Speaker 4: But again, I do want to let you know that
- 17:58Speaker 4: talk Line again will be broadcast asting live from the
- 18:00Speaker 4: Capitol on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday of this week, generally
- 18:04Speaker 4: speaking Tuesday and Wednesday and Thursday. Wilson Meadows will go
- 18:06Speaker 4: live there at ten oh six Later today Metro News

- 18:16Speaker 4: Hoppy Kerchival is going to join us. He is in
- 18:19Speaker 4: town moderating. It's probably starting to wrap up right now,
- 18:23Speaker 4: if it hasn't already, the Issues an ex event, the
- 18:25Speaker 4: annual event Charlestonnry Alliance, Charleston Chamber involved in that that
- 18:28Speaker 4: happened this morning at the Marriott in Charleston. He's going
- 18:31Speaker 4: to join us in the studio coming up a little
- 18:33Speaker 4: bit later on. Also, State School Superintendent Michelle Blatt is here.
- 18:36Speaker 4: Steve Roberts from the West Virginia Chamber of Commerce will
- 18:39Speaker 4: join us. Also, we're going to be joined by House
- 18:42Speaker 4: Minority Leader Sean Hornbuckle on the show today as well.
- 18:45Speaker 4: If there's a quote in this morning's paper and reported
- 18:49Speaker 4: elsewhere from Sean Hornbuckle, Delegan Hornbuckle out of Cabal.
- 18:51Speaker 3: County that they really want to legalize.
- 18:54Speaker 4: Cannabis, recreational cannabis in West Virginia and that they want
- 18:58Speaker 4: to make that a priority of the Democrats. So we're
- 19:00Speaker 4: going to talk to Sean Hornbuckle about that. Some of
- 19:03Speaker 4: the folks that will be on the show today Metro
- 19:05Speaker 4: News Midday powered by Selango Law with thirteen News in
- 19:08Speaker 4: Tonight Live anchor Amanda Baron and me again coming up
- 19:11Speaker 4: at noon today on this show. Tomorrow, we're going to
- 19:13Speaker 4: put a rap on the Christmas season the Selango Law

- 19:19Speaker 4: Garon for the Dirty Birds will be here, Doctor Casey
- 19:21Speaker 4: Sachsbridge Valley will show up. It will be on the
- 19:23Speaker 4: show tomorrow. And next week is Restaurant Week at Charleston
- 19:27Speaker 4: and we're going to get into that coming up on
- 19:29Speaker 4: tomorrow's show as well. I do want to remind you
- 19:32Speaker 4: about something that we are trying to do. We think
- 19:35Speaker 4: this is the second maybe third year we've done this.
- 19:37Speaker 4: I have to talk to Rob Real about that. Our
- 19:38Speaker 4: annual Drop your Socks events. The stations of WVRC Media
- 19:43Speaker 4: Charleston in Union Mission inviting you for our big event
- 19:46Speaker 4: next Thursday, a week from this Thursday on our parking
- 19:48Speaker 4: lot eleven, eleven Virginia Street East and Charleston, seven am
- 19:52Speaker 4: till six pm.
- 19:53Speaker 3: And we are looking for new socks.
- 19:55Speaker 4: You can drop them off on that Thursday, that's the
- 19:57Speaker 4: twenty second, seven am till six p and we can
- 20:00Speaker 4: also accept cash and check donations as well. For the
- 20:04Speaker 4: Drop your Socks event. We'll be talking to Rob Real
- 20:06Speaker 4: about that. And the single is ready. You've heard Rob say,
- 20:10Speaker 4: and the promos that we're running will say this the single,
- 20:15Speaker 4: the single number one thing that people ask for, of
- 20:18Speaker 4: the most requested item when it comes to the folks
- 20:21Speaker 4: like Union Mission, these folks that do this sort of thing,
- 20:23Speaker 4: the socks warm socks, and last year we collected I
- 20:26Speaker 4: don't know, like several hundred pairs of socks and I'm
- 20:29Speaker 4: not even sure how much cash we did.
- 20:32Speaker 3: So we're going to start.
- 20:33Speaker 4: At seven am next Thursday, one week from this Thursday,
- 20:35Speaker 4: on our parking lot eleven eleven Virginia Street East and Charleston.
- 20:39Speaker 4: Really simple. You don't even have to get out of
- 20:41Speaker 4: your car. You know the way these things work. You
- 20:43Speaker 4: basically will do a loop in the parking lot and
- 20:46Speaker 4: all of our stations take part in this. You all
- 20:49Speaker 4: your favorite WVRC media Charleston personalities will be out there
- 20:53Speaker 4: collecting socks. The only thing we ask is that they
- 20:55Speaker 4: are new socks. All right, they can be. We just
- 20:59Speaker 4: want them to be new socks. That's the only thing
- 21:02Speaker 4: that we ask, all right. And you can give a sum,
- 21:05Speaker 4: you can give us all. You can do whatever you
- 21:07Speaker 4: want for drop your socks amount.
- 21:09Speaker 8: All right.
- 21:09Speaker 4: So we've had a little bit of scheduling problem which
- 21:12Speaker 4: probably is on my end, uh for the new Knaw
- 21:17Speaker 4: County Magistrate, Delbert rausch Uh And uh yeah, looking at
- 21:23Speaker 4: the schedule, it is on my end. The problem was
- 21:25Speaker 4: on my end, So not on the show today. He
- 21:29Speaker 4: will be on the show. Hey, you keep it down
- 21:31Speaker 4: in there. The a trained Anthony Harmon giving me crap
- 21:33Speaker 4: about this, all right, Yeah, it's I apologize it's tomorrow,
- 21:37Speaker 4: it's not today.
- 21:37Speaker 3: But I'll tell you who is here. It's our good
- 21:41Speaker 3: friend Brian Hughes. How you doing doing great?
- 21:43Speaker 4: Are you just put just tagged you in here a
- 21:45Speaker 4: little bit early because you boy here.
- 21:47Speaker 3: Messed up on the sky.
- 21:48Speaker 9: I heard you dancing like nobody's business. I mean you
- 21:50Speaker 9: had tap you had tap shoes on there. Well, luckily
- 21:53Speaker 9: I'm pretty good at it.
- 21:55Speaker 3: They tell me.
- 21:55Speaker 9: I don't those dance lessons back when you were a
- 21:58Speaker 9: kid finally paid off all that clog.
- 22:00Speaker 4: Yeah all right, So Brian Hughes is here, How are
- 22:04Speaker 4: you doing, my friend?
- 22:04Speaker 9: I'm doing good right, well chili this morning. But hey, yeah,
- 22:08Speaker 9: life happens. Life happens. All right, let's warm it up
- 22:11Speaker 9: and talk about Regatto. Yeah bet, all right, So you
- 22:13Speaker 9: you're the chairs that I no no official title, but
- 22:17Speaker 9: I primarily am doing the fundraising or that. That's my
- 22:21Speaker 9: primary role at this point. Then I go into operations
- 22:23Speaker 9: once we get there. But listen, we've been going full
- 22:27Speaker 9: force with our fundraising because you know, this is a
- 22:30Speaker 9: big year coming up. I mean it said twenty you
- 22:32Speaker 9: know it's a twenty twenty five or twenty twenty five,
- 22:35Speaker 9: two hundred and fiftieth birthday of America. So we've got
- 22:38Speaker 9: to celebrate that. We've got a couple of votes that
- 22:40Speaker 9: are turning one hundred years old this year. The regatta
- 22:42Speaker 9: is in its fifth year of the return. And then
- 22:46Speaker 9: let's the American Ctermal Association, which I'm the president of.
- 22:49Speaker 9: It turns fifty years old this year as well.
- 22:52Speaker 3: All right, big year. It is a big year, indeed,
- 22:54Speaker 3: And what give us? Give us a date to the regatta.
- 22:56Speaker 9: So July second through July fifth, and that's that Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday.
- 23:01Speaker 8: Uh.
- 23:01Speaker 9: When you know, when we've spoken to the fireworks folks,
- 23:04Speaker 9: they've said no time. And and you know a couple
- 23:07Speaker 9: of these families that, by the way, most of fireworks
- 23:10Speaker 9: are based out of Pittsburgh, Italians.
- 23:12Speaker 10: They know how to blow things up.
- 23:14Speaker 4: What's the yeah, Because I remember when I was helping
- 23:18Speaker 4: out with the Freedom Festival down down in Logan years ago,
- 23:21Speaker 4: there was a big there was one big company. They
- 23:23Speaker 4: always advertised when and they didn't just say fireworks. They
- 23:26Speaker 4: wanted their name mentioned. It was like the Zambelle and
- 23:29Speaker 4: zam Beli brothers. Yeah, they wanted their name mentioned in
- 23:31Speaker 4: the advertising.
- 23:32Speaker 10: Oh let me tell you the asam Belli brothers.
- 23:33Speaker 9: You've got the Pyrotechnica group and and they actually all
- 23:37Speaker 9: are descendants of the same family. So they've just broken
- 23:41Speaker 9: off when somebody goes, I can do this better than
- 23:42Speaker 9: you guys, and you know, they break off. But yeah,
- 23:45Speaker 9: most of the fireworks celebrations are booked out of Pittsburgh.
- 23:49Speaker 3: That's that's interesting, very interesting.
- 23:52Speaker 9: But but you know, they said, no time in the
- 23:54Speaker 9: one hundred year history of some of these one hundred
- 23:56Speaker 9: plus year history of some of these families and h
- 23:59Speaker 9: organization have they ever had a date that has been
- 24:02Speaker 9: so perfectly placed in which they have to do massive,
- 24:07Speaker 9: massive celebrations across the country. So we're gonna have a
- 24:10Speaker 9: fun time. The good thing about it is and you know,
- 24:13Speaker 9: if you want to be a part of the uh,
- 24:16Speaker 9: you know, of the celebration, we are absolutely willing to
- 24:20Speaker 9: talk with you, find ways to help you grow your brand,
- 24:23Speaker 9: make things unique for you and your and your company.
- 24:26Speaker 9: But this is the time that you know, corporate citizens
- 24:29Speaker 9: need to step up because you know, we are here
- 24:33Speaker 9: to help you every single day of the week and
- 24:36Speaker 9: of the year, you know, to make sure.
- 24:38Speaker 10: Your business continues to grow.
- 24:40Speaker 9: But if there's a time to give back to the
- 24:42Speaker 9: you know, to celebrate America right and and everything we've accomplished,
- 24:46Speaker 9: whether this country. Whether you think it's broken or it's perfect,
- 24:50Speaker 9: or it's somewhere in between. It's time to celebrate this,
- 24:53Speaker 9: this long, two hundred and fifty year experiment.
- 24:58Speaker 4: And from that's what it is to time, Brian, I
- 25:00Speaker 4: wonder how the experiment's going, especially in the last.
- 25:02Speaker 3: Couple of years.
- 25:03Speaker 10: Listen, I I know, I agree. There are times I
- 25:06Speaker 10: look at how I'm.
- 25:07Speaker 3: Like, what are you people doing?
- 25:09Speaker 9: But but the good part about it is, you know,
- 25:11Speaker 9: we get to come together every couple of years, every
- 25:14Speaker 9: four years, and we get to you know, let our
- 25:17Speaker 9: voices be heard. But this is the time to celebrate
- 25:20Speaker 9: the fact that our voices can be heard, celebrate those
- 25:22Speaker 9: people who have given the ultimate sacrifice.
- 25:25Speaker 10: And it's just gonna be it's gonna be a fun time.
- 25:27Speaker 9: And and but but this year, when I have been
- 25:30Speaker 9: meeting with many of our sponsors, they I've said, if
- 25:35Speaker 9: you can help us out a little bit more, because
- 25:36Speaker 9: things are going to cost a lot more this year,
- 25:38Speaker 9: just help us out, you know, step up late, just
- 25:41Speaker 9: so touch more. Nearly every single organization has stepped up
- 25:45Speaker 9: to the plate. And and that's that's a cool thing.
- 25:48Speaker 9: This is going to be an awesome celebration the mayor
- 25:51Speaker 9: uh and and the entire Charleston Stem when we got
- 25:53Speaker 9: a board, uh, the city employees, everybody's excited. Plus we
- 25:57Speaker 9: also know June into that first week of July is
- 26:00Speaker 9: a massive undertaking for the city with the bike races,
- 26:04Speaker 9: with the you know you say cycling, which is so exciting,
- 26:07Speaker 9: and then you've got the gymnastics that it's gonna be
- 26:09Speaker 9: USA Gymnastics and their new stuff.
- 26:11Speaker 10: You know, that's gonna be some really fun times.
- 26:14Speaker 4: Talking to Brian Hughes again about the Charleston's Stern Wheel
- 26:17Speaker 4: forgot it now? Everybody always asks when will the entertainment
- 26:20Speaker 4: be announced? I'm not asking for it today. When will
- 26:23Speaker 4: it be announced?
- 26:24Speaker 9: We we hope to announce somewhere because the thing is,
- 26:27Speaker 9: we still we just don't have all of it booked.
- 26:30Speaker 10: You know, we've got we've got some of it books.
- 26:33Speaker 9: But we hope that maybe sometime during March or April
- 26:37Speaker 9: we might be able to do that with with Gusto.
- 26:39Speaker 9: Because the other thing, too is everybody's gonna be on
- 26:42Speaker 9: the same page. So once once we're all on this,
- 26:46Speaker 9: once every single artist, their management teams, we're all on
- 26:49Speaker 9: the same page, then we can do it but one
- 26:52Speaker 9: of the most popular.
- 26:53Speaker 10: Things from last year. Oh my gosh, I'm so excited.
- 26:57Speaker 10: You know, the the Valley jam and the stern will
- 26:59Speaker 10: boat rides everybody.
- 27:00Speaker 3: I love that. It's a huge hit last year. Yeah, jam.
- 27:02Speaker 9: So we we've been chatting with them and and and
- 27:05Speaker 9: we expect that to grow. Uh you know, there are
- 27:07Speaker 9: more opportunities with that. But there's so many different things,
- 27:11Speaker 9: you know, from the carnival, the kids zone, uh, you know,
- 27:14Speaker 9: to the all the food that you.
- 27:15Speaker 10: Could possibly imagine. So that's gonna be fun.
- 27:19Speaker 9: But listen, we're gonna have a big party and celebrate
- 27:22Speaker 9: America's birthday.
- 27:23Speaker 3: That's the plan. That's the plan.
- 27:25Speaker 4: So I mean, again, I don't want to give away
- 27:26Speaker 4: too much now because we're just in January, but are
- 27:28Speaker 4: there new things this year coming? You don't have to
- 27:30Speaker 4: tell me what they are, but are there new things
- 27:32Speaker 4: that are in that head of you and and the
- 27:34Speaker 4: rest of the committee and the and the and the
- 27:36Speaker 4: and the city that you're thinking about.
- 27:37Speaker 9: If there's if there's anything that because we we've laughed
- 27:42Speaker 9: about it, uh, you know, and we said if there's
- 27:44Speaker 9: any time to do something and go over the top,
- 27:46Speaker 9: it's this year. And we do have some we do
- 27:49Speaker 9: some things that we're planning and I and here's the deal,
- 27:52Speaker 9: as Mayor said the other day, we got to keep
- 27:55Speaker 9: this all the wraps because we will make this a
- 27:57Speaker 9: big party. But it is going to be bigger, it's
- 27:58Speaker 9: gonna better, it's gonna be so much fun. The Wii,
- 28:00Speaker 9: your dog raciers are going to be awesome. You know
- 28:03Speaker 9: you've got the And this is one thing I don't
- 28:05Speaker 9: think people realize that we have this little hidden cove.
- 28:08Speaker 9: It's called Capitol Street. It's not so much hidden during
- 28:12Speaker 9: the day, but during regatta it's hidden. And we put
- 28:14Speaker 9: a jumbo tron at the end of Capitol Street close
- 28:17Speaker 9: to the river, and you can sit there with your
- 28:19Speaker 9: lawn chairs an incredible comfort because there's a lot of
- 28:22Speaker 9: space up there, and we've got speakers that go specifically
- 28:25Speaker 9: to Capitol Street and a JumboTron you can relax, step
- 28:29Speaker 9: into whether it be Groove or Sam's Uptown Cafe and
- 28:32Speaker 9: now one oh one just right across the street. You know,
- 28:35Speaker 9: you have that opportunity to sit down, sit there and
- 28:37Speaker 9: relax and enjoy the concert there as well without having
- 28:39Speaker 9: to get over into the main footprint and try and
- 28:42Speaker 9: fight some of the crowds. So there's a lot of
- 28:44Speaker 9: things that you can still do and still enjoy it all.
- 28:48Speaker 4: Talking to Brian Hughes about the regatta, a Dave Island
- 28:50Speaker 4: Show on five eighty Live broad to part by Generations
- 28:52Speaker 4: Forward of Hurricane Drive Home and a newer quality pre
- 28:54Speaker 4: on four no payments to qualified buyers for ninety days,
- 28:57Speaker 4: Generations Ford just off the hurricane exit of I sixty
- 28:59Speaker 4: four or online Generations for dot Com one destination for
- 29:02Speaker 4: every generation. Generations Forward cea dealer for details. All right,
- 29:07Speaker 4: this is gonna be your but not your final one.
- 29:08Speaker 4: What happened on several times between nowadays, but for today
- 29:11Speaker 4: your final plea if you will for for sponsors, because
- 29:15Speaker 4: if you're a company, I mean, there's no bigger event
- 29:18Speaker 4: in one place I can't imagine in West Virginia. Maybe
- 29:21Speaker 4: maybe Bridge Day, but but it doesn't have that's a
- 29:24Speaker 4: you know, that's a one day thing. One day for
- 29:26Speaker 4: that you're not gonna have your name out there. Any
- 29:29Speaker 4: other opportunity that you're gonna have your name in front
- 29:31Speaker 4: of that many people is what you will with for God.
- 29:34Speaker 9: The the the equivalent of the Charleston Cemo Regatta, is
- 29:39Speaker 9: three Mountaineer football games back to back to back. It
- 29:44Speaker 9: is you are you're reaching audience that is massive. It
- 29:47Speaker 9: stretches states upon states away and if you're and you know,
- 29:51Speaker 9: and it also gets the locals here so excited. But
- 29:55Speaker 9: this is a time for you to be a corporate citizen,
- 29:57Speaker 9: step up to the plate, have some on with us
- 30:00Speaker 9: and celebrate America's birthday. The Stern Wheels, you know, these
- 30:05Speaker 9: boats are you know what helped get the coal and
- 30:08Speaker 9: the salt trade going up and down the rivers. And
- 30:12Speaker 9: you know, we celebrate that every single every single day.
- 30:15Speaker 9: I sell it, every celebrate every single day. I live
- 30:17Speaker 9: on one full time. And just so you know, the

- 34:07Speaker 4: Bright to you apart by Bridge Valley Community Technical College,
- 34:09Speaker 4: Bridge Valley dot edu. That's a website, Bridge Valley Community
- 34:12Speaker 4: Technical College. Your career starts here. I did mention that
- 34:15Speaker 4: we had scheduled on the show today Delbert rash I
- 34:17Speaker 4: the new magistrates in Kanawh County air on the host
- 34:21Speaker 4: and the booking agent. I'm going to blame the bookers
- 34:23Speaker 4: of the Oh yeah, that's me. That's me. Oh, the
- 34:26Speaker 4: booking agent on the show. It's actually tomorrow. I planned
- 34:29Speaker 4: all this stuff and texting back and forth. It's actually tomorrow,
- 34:33Speaker 4: So now I got to mess with tomorrow's schedule.
- 34:35Speaker 3: It's a little bit sure.
- 34:37Speaker 14: You'll figure it out. That's always fun, right, It's like
- 34:38Speaker 14: trying to heard cast with a pistol.
- 34:40Speaker 3: Sometimes I'll figure it out. That voice you hear is
- 34:42Speaker 3: Chris Miller, who is going to be a Canada for
- 34:45Speaker 3: State Summit.
- 34:46Speaker 10: Yeah.
- 34:47Speaker 14: I'm really excited, man, Thanks ver much for having us on.
- 34:49Speaker 14: We get to file today and the news is public.
- 34:53Speaker 14: Now you're the first on air radio interview in person
- 34:56Speaker 14: that we've done.
- 34:56Speaker 3: Dave, Wow, you could have done much better than me. Ah,
- 35:00Speaker 3: I disagree.
- 35:01Speaker 14: You're pretty You're pretty okay in my book.
- 35:03Speaker 4: All right, all right, yeah, you and I have known
- 35:04Speaker 4: each other for a long time. But what made you
- 35:09Speaker 4: make this decision, Chris.
- 35:14Speaker 3: Dave, Yeah, we have to.
- 35:16Speaker 14: I don't want to. I don't want to taut a
- 35:17Speaker 14: bunch of negativity. But if we're going to look at
- 35:19Speaker 14: the numbers and look at where we are as a
- 35:21Speaker 14: state right now, we have serious, serious problems. We've been
- 35:24Speaker 14: declining in population, we have an aging population, and we
- 35:27Speaker 14: have a financial catastrophe that's coming because of the way
- 35:30Speaker 14: the funding works for the Affordable Care Act, in Medicare
- 35:33Speaker 14: and Medicaid expansion. As our population continues to age and
- 35:36Speaker 14: we don't have a productive workforce below it, then the
- 35:39Speaker 14: revenue gets basically upside down and it's going to affect
- 35:42Speaker 14: the bond ratings and put us in a financial tail spin.
- 35:44Speaker 14: And that's when the deep austerity happens. And so the
- 35:47Speaker 14: way to fix this is just like any time that
- 35:49Speaker 14: I buy a business, I systematically analyze it and then
- 35:52Speaker 14: I determine how in the world we're going to take
- 35:54Speaker 14: it from where it is because you don't buy a
- 35:56Speaker 14: business that's really rocking and rolling and cranking, right, You're
- 35:58Speaker 14: always buying struggling businesses. Most of the time. You create
- 36:01Speaker 14: a game plan and a blueprint to fix the problem,
- 36:03Speaker 14: and then you go through and execute. And that's exactly
- 36:05Speaker 14: where we are in the state. We have serious financial catastrophe,
- 36:09Speaker 14: a serious financial catastrophecoming and it's going to take our best,
- 36:11Speaker 14: in our brightest on the field to fix it. It starts
- 36:14Speaker 14: and ends with economic development, because the solution to every
- 36:17Speaker 14: problem that we have, from population, to healthcare, to the
- 36:21Speaker 14: foster care system, to everything that involves our economy. We
- 36:25Speaker 14: got to add two hundred thousand people to our state
- 36:27Speaker 14: over the next ten years. We absolutely positively have to.
- 36:30Speaker 14: And that's a function of economic growth, growth and development.
- 36:32Speaker 14: And who better to do that than people that are
- 36:34Speaker 14: literally employ people. I'm employee about six hundred and fifty
- 36:37Speaker 14: people and understand how to operate a business. It's the
- 36:39Speaker 14: same darn thing. We're going to get in there and
- 36:41Speaker 14: make ourselves very appealing to commerce and investment and turn
- 36:45Speaker 14: West Virginia into an absolute engine of economic development because
- 36:48Speaker 14: we have to. So there is a key thing here
- 36:52Speaker 14: that we need to discuss. We are living in artificial
- 36:55Speaker 14: intelligence age. It is going to change absolutely everything. And
- 36:59Speaker 14: it just so happens that West Virginia has everything that
- 37:03Speaker 14: the rest of the country needs in this emerging twenty
- 37:05Speaker 14: first century economy. And it starts and ends with being
- 37:08Speaker 14: able to produce massive amounts of energy and also all
- 37:11Speaker 14: of the water resources that we have. It takes massive
- 37:14Speaker 14: amounts of water to cool all the servers to provide
- 37:16Speaker 14: the computational power. It takes massive amounts of water to
- 37:19Speaker 14: manufacture the Cubit chip, which is the next generation of
- 37:22Speaker 14: artificial intelligence chips. It takes massive amounts of power to
- 37:26Speaker 14: power the computation to literally fund all of the future.
- 37:30Speaker 14: And West Virginia has a key role that we can
- 37:33Speaker 14: play by turning ourselves into the battery of the East Coast.
- 37:36Speaker 14: And here's where the real game changer happens, Dave. We
- 37:39Speaker 14: dramatically uptick the amount of power that we're producing, it
- 37:41Speaker 14: dramatically lowers the cost, and we export the power. When
- 37:45Speaker 14: we do that, we're an ability to where we can
- 37:47Speaker 14: dramatically drive down the cost of power and use that
- 37:50Speaker 14: as the foundation of all of the economic growth and development.
- 37:53Speaker 14: So if We're the state in the Union that's power
- 37:55Speaker 14: is eighty percent cheaper than anywhere else. It is an
- 37:58Speaker 14: absolute game changer because businesses that are in power intensive
- 38:01Speaker 14: will come to us. But then you also think about
- 38:03Speaker 14: Jim and Susie Adkins, both of them are on Social Security.
- 38:06Speaker 14: You cut their power bill by seventy to eighty percent.
- 38:08Speaker 14: You've done something incredibly impactful for them as well. And
- 38:11Speaker 14: that's what good government is. And that's what I want
- 38:13Speaker 14: to be a part of. I want to be a
- 38:14Speaker 14: part of nothing but solutions and fixing problems.
- 38:16Speaker 3: Todor Chris Miller.
- 38:17Speaker 4: And again, this is the fifth District, Yes, sir, Okay,
- 38:20Speaker 4: and that's primarily Cable County.
- 38:22Speaker 3: But explain, explain the district what area It is.
- 38:24Speaker 14: A little bit of Cable, all of Cable in a
- 38:25Speaker 14: little bit of Wayne County, Okay. And Mike Wolfele was
- 38:28Speaker 14: the Senator and the state out of the fifth district
- 38:31Speaker 14: for the past three terms, so he served for twelve years.
- 38:33Speaker 14: He is just a fantastic guy. He's a close friend
- 38:36Speaker 14: of mine, and he decided that it was time for
- 38:38Speaker 14: him to step aside, and so he's passing the torch
- 38:40Speaker 14: onto me. And I'm going to roll up my sleeves
- 38:42Speaker 14: and rock and roll and do everything I can to
- 38:43Speaker 14: represent the fifth.
- 38:44Speaker 4: It's interesting you say, because Wolfel was a Democrat and
- 38:46Speaker 4: you're a Republican. You're saying he's passing the torch under.
- 38:49Speaker 14: Your Mike and I play basketball together, like I'm close
- 38:53Speaker 14: with his with his sons, they're my age. They're great
- 38:55Speaker 14: people and we're just we're family friends, and you know,
- 38:58Speaker 14: get past the political party stuff. They are good human beings.
- 39:01Speaker 14: The Wolfls are just great people and I do anything
- 39:03Speaker 14: with them.
- 39:04Speaker 4: Talking to Chris Miller, who is going to make it official,
- 39:07Speaker 4: I guess later today when you head to the Secretary
- 39:08Speaker 4: of State's office. When you leave here, these will be
- 39:10Speaker 4: running for state Senate out of a district five, but
- 39:12Speaker 4: Nave Islands showing five. Any line brought to you by
- 39:14Speaker 4: Pinnacle Consultants. Pinnacle offers a four phase assessment for your properties. Inspection,
- 39:18Speaker 4: samply now analysis, comprehensive reporting, the management planning.
- 39:21Speaker 3: There's a Pinnacle Corp.
- 39:22Speaker 4: Dobt net because what you don't know, Ken Hershey, of course, Chris,
- 39:25Speaker 4: you ran for governor last time around. What did you
- 39:27Speaker 4: take away from your bid for governor?
- 39:30Speaker 14: The absolute best thing about the state of West Virginia
- 39:32Speaker 14: is the people. And I got the privilege to travel
- 39:35Speaker 14: all around the state. My wife and I got the
- 39:36Speaker 14: privilege to travel all around the state and meet so
- 39:38Speaker 14: many incredibly fantastic people, and it just literally inspired me
- 39:42Speaker 14: to want to stay involved and do this even you know,
- 39:44Speaker 14: lose it hurts, but that's not why you do this, right.
- 39:47Speaker 14: You do this because you're trying to do the right
- 39:49Speaker 14: thing and help the people in the state that has
- 39:51Speaker 14: literally provided everything for you. So here we are.
- 39:57Speaker 4: It is interesting, I guess, because there have been people
- 40:01Speaker 4: that have said, we need more business people in the legislature,
- 40:05Speaker 4: and over the last couple of years we have seen
- 40:06Speaker 4: I think a lot more business people stand up. And
- 40:09Speaker 4: you're obviously a very successful business person. Why do you
- 40:12Speaker 4: think it's important to have more business people in general
- 40:15Speaker 4: in the legislature.
- 40:16Speaker 14: We understand financial mechanisms, we understand common sense, and we
- 40:19Speaker 14: also don't like bureaucracies. And I really do think that
- 40:22Speaker 14: one of the enemies of the twenty first century, just
- 40:24Speaker 14: in general or bureaucracies, and so we know how to
- 40:27Speaker 14: manage through them and also fix them. So that's why
- 40:31Speaker 14: it's a unique skill set. That's problem solving. It's not
- 40:34Speaker 14: sausage making. It is actual execution because every single day,
- 40:37Speaker 14: every decision that I make affects six hundred and fifty
- 40:40Speaker 14: employees and then some because we got businesses outside of
- 40:43Speaker 14: the state, So it matters to have people that understand
- 40:47Speaker 14: decisions and consequences and in particular unintended consequences, because in business,
- 40:52Speaker 14: I can make a decision that could have unintended consequences
- 40:54Speaker 14: if I don't evaluate them, and it creates it's nothing
- 40:56Speaker 14: but problems. It's the same thing in politics. Sometimes they
- 41:00Speaker 14: create solutions to fix problems that they don't think about
- 41:02Speaker 14: the unintended consequences because they're not using common sense. And
- 41:06Speaker 14: so it's providing that kind of simple, clear thought process
- 41:09Speaker 14: and mindset to help fix problems. That's what the appeal
- 41:12Speaker 14: of business people is.
- 41:13Speaker 4: Tad to Chris Miller, we're going to take a break.
- 41:15Speaker 4: He is going to be a candidate for State Center.
- 41:16Speaker 4: We'll take a break and come back after this. On
- 41:18Speaker 4: the Voice of Charleston WCCHS.

- 42:59Speaker 4: Center Friday, January twenty third through Sunday the twenty Fifth'm
- 43:02Speaker 4: talking to Chris Miller, who is going to be a
- 43:05Speaker 4: candidate for State Senate out of District five. You've mentioned
- 43:10Speaker 4: some of the things that are on your agenda and
- 43:12Speaker 4: you're coming in this. You're attacking this with a very
- 43:15Speaker 4: ambitious agenda, but you're one of you know.
- 43:19Speaker 3: There are other people in there. You know.
- 43:21Speaker 4: It's not like when you're running for governor or secretary
- 43:23Speaker 4: of state or whatever. When you're the guy or the person,
- 43:26Speaker 4: you got to work with other people. And you're going
- 43:29Speaker 4: to be when if you are elected or whomever's elected this,
- 43:32Speaker 4: you're going to be the new person on the block.
- 43:35Speaker 4: How do you plan on attacking that.
- 43:38Speaker 14: Well, building bridges. That's that's what we do every day
- 43:42Speaker 14: in business, that we build bridges. You can't get stuff
- 43:44Speaker 14: done when you're an absolute ahle, and so you've got
- 43:46Speaker 14: to be good to everybody, right, and people always remember
- 43:49Speaker 14: how you make them feel before it is what you say.
- 43:51Speaker 14: So like, this is just what I'm made for. This
- 43:53Speaker 14: is teamwork. This is creating a team and creating a
- 43:56Speaker 14: map for execution, going out and executing. And I realized
- 43:58Speaker 14: that I might start might not start off right, you know,
- 44:01Speaker 14: in charge of everything.
- 44:01Speaker 3: That's okay.
- 44:02Speaker 14: I'm just gonna do everything that I can to work
- 44:04Speaker 14: is absolutely hard as I possibly can for Cabal and
- 44:07Speaker 14: Wayne Counties, and also realize that my jobs protect the
- 44:09Speaker 14: state and solve the problems of states facing. The interesting
- 44:12Speaker 14: thing is going to be who's going to be able
- 44:14Speaker 14: to keep up? Because I have a very high work
- 44:15Speaker 14: rate and a lot of energy, and I'm prepared to
- 44:17Speaker 14: actually be in that building for twelve hours a day,
- 44:19Speaker 14: busting my hump for the people of West Virginia, and
- 44:22Speaker 14: so I hope everybody else is prepared to roll up
- 44:24Speaker 14: their sleeves and do that as well, because there is
- 44:25Speaker 14: a serious set of jobs that needs done.
- 44:28Speaker 4: When you were talking earlier about AI and things of
- 44:31Speaker 4: that nature, one of the hot button topics over the
- 44:32Speaker 4: last year so has been data centers. We've talked about
- 44:36Speaker 4: data centers. Where are you on data centers?
- 44:38Speaker 14: So we have to be smart about this. There are
- 44:41Speaker 14: locations and areas that people that do not want data
- 44:44Speaker 14: centers there. There also are, like when we're talking about
- 44:46Speaker 14: being strategic, there are locations where we absolutely positively should
- 44:50Speaker 14: be putting data centers. And here's why. The way that
- 44:53Speaker 14: those those those servers and computational systems are calculated for
- 44:59Speaker 14: property tax because of how expensive they are even at
- 45:03Speaker 14: salvage values. We're talking about twenty five to fifty million
- 45:06Speaker 14: dollars in revenue for a county. You know, you see
- 45:09Speaker 14: you think about Mingo County, you think about McDowell County,
- 45:12Speaker 14: you think about Wayne County that's really struggling. A data
- 45:15Speaker 14: center there would provide an incredible amount of revenue for
- 45:18Speaker 14: that county because of the way property taxes work. That
- 45:22Speaker 14: would be an absolute game changer. So nobody wants a
- 45:25Speaker 14: data center, just like nobody wants a power plant right
- 45:27Speaker 14: beside their house. But there's plenty of sites and locations
- 45:29Speaker 14: that we can find to put these in, because like,
- 45:31Speaker 14: this is a financial obligation. We have a fiduciary duty
- 45:35Speaker 14: inside of elected office to run the government, to do
- 45:39Speaker 14: beneficial things for the people and manage the dollars and
- 45:41Speaker 14: cents the right way. And this is something that's imperative
- 45:44Speaker 14: when it comes to managing dollars and cents, because my goodness, gracious,
- 45:47Speaker 14: that is an incredible amount of money that we could
- 45:49Speaker 14: have to improve education, to improve people training and trades,
- 45:52Speaker 14: to improve healthcare, all kinds of things inside of just
- 45:55Speaker 14: one county that has that data center. So we got
- 45:58Speaker 14: to be smart and I'm all in a lot of ways.
- 46:01Speaker 4: What you know, you mentioned earlier that we need we
- 46:04Speaker 4: need to add what did you say, two hundred thousand, Yeah,
- 46:06Speaker 4: people to West Virginia. How do we market West Virginia
- 46:09Speaker 4: I mean to other people to get them to want
- 46:11Speaker 4: to either a stay here. I mean, you brought your
- 46:15Speaker 4: son with you, he's a young guy. How do you
- 46:18Speaker 4: look at him and say, okay, your generation, we need
- 46:20Speaker 4: you to stay here. Or how do we go on
- 46:22Speaker 4: the on the national level and say West Virginia is
- 46:24Speaker 4: the place to be.
- 46:25Speaker 14: Both things right. So we have what the rest of
- 46:28Speaker 14: the world, based on data, is looking for. We have
- 46:30Speaker 14: what the rest of the country is looking for. We
- 46:32Speaker 14: have hills and trees and rivers and streams, and a
- 46:34Speaker 14: high quality of life and the lower cost of living.
- 46:37Speaker 14: We have some of the best people on planet Earth. Like,
- 46:39Speaker 14: there's something very beneficial to all of that stuff, and
- 46:42Speaker 14: there are people all around the country that are looking
- 46:45Speaker 14: for that. They're tired of being locked up in cities
- 46:47Speaker 14: surrounded by concrete where they like, if something happens, like
- 46:50Speaker 14: a pandemic, you're locked up in a quad building up
- 46:54Speaker 14: and down bunch of apartments and you can't go anywhere.
- 46:56Speaker 14: That is pure misery. That's not the way human beings
- 46:58Speaker 14: are wired. So we have what people are looking for.
- 47:01Speaker 14: And if we ramp up our economy and make it
- 47:04Speaker 14: very very beneficial for opportunity in the young kids to stay,
- 47:08Speaker 14: then you hit it with a double edged sword, right,
- 47:10Speaker 14: You hit it with what people want that aren't here,
- 47:12Speaker 14: and then you solve the problem that people are looking
- 47:14Speaker 14: for that are here, and it's a win.
- 47:17Speaker 4: The couple weeks ago, Chris House speaker Roger Hanshaw came
- 47:21Speaker 4: out and had a gathering little press event with some
- 47:24Speaker 4: of the people of the Republican Caucus, and he said,
- 47:26Speaker 4: on the House, they want to focus on not so
- 47:29Speaker 4: much on social issues, but they want to focus on jobs,
- 47:32Speaker 4: the economy, so on. So we didn't really hear that
- 47:34Speaker 4: out of the Senate. Where are you on the social
- 47:36Speaker 4: issues versus the other things?
- 47:38Speaker 14: So we need to be focusing on nothing but economic
- 47:41Speaker 14: growth and development to solve the problems the state is facing.
- 47:43Speaker 14: And if you break down every single problem that we have,
- 47:47Speaker 14: it all boils back down to if you create a
- 47:49Speaker 14: thriving economy, you can fix it. You can fix Peia,
- 47:52Speaker 14: you can fix education, you can fix healthcare, and what
- 47:55Speaker 14: you have to do to do all those things that
- 47:57Speaker 14: you have to the tax revenue and the systems to
- 47:59Speaker 14: make it work. And so growing the population does exactly that.
- 48:03Speaker 14: And how do you grow the population You create an
- 48:06Speaker 14: economy that thrives. Capital flows like water to the places
- 48:10Speaker 14: that it's most welcome. And so if we make West
- 48:12Speaker 14: Virginia welcome to capital and investment systematically hitting singles and
- 48:16Speaker 14: doubles and then setting it up for the home run
- 48:18Speaker 14: in the Grand Slam, then the sky is the limit.
- 48:21Speaker 14: And I if we do this, the right way, Dave,
- 48:23Speaker 14: we can awake a sleeping giant. West Virginia could be
- 48:26Speaker 14: because of our resources, we could be the richest state
- 48:29Speaker 14: in the country per capita. And when we do that,
- 48:31Speaker 14: there's lots of problems that get solved.
- 48:33Speaker 3: You have your website or social media up and running in.
- 48:36Speaker 14: Yeah, so it's Miller for West Virginia dot com. It's
- 48:39Speaker 14: just now freshen up and running. And when I go
- 48:42Speaker 14: file today then they'll have a po box and all
- 48:44Speaker 14: this other stuff. It'll make it official.
- 48:46Speaker 4: All right, Chris Miller, Republican candidate. Now go to go
- 48:49Speaker 4: make it official. Head down the street.
- 48:50Speaker 3: All right, thanks for having us dating that.
