- 0:00Speaker 1: And Football at four is powered by the Inside of
- 0:02the Birds podcast. It's brought to you by BET three
- 0:04sixty five. Whatever the sport, whatever the moment, it's never
- 0:06ordinary at BET three six five. Of course, Andrew to
- 0:10checko on a Thursday, we got a lot to dive into.
- 0:13Andrew's been cranking out some stuff over at Inside the
- 0:16Birds dot com. Make sure you check that out. And
- 0:19he's got his positional previews. And we talked a little
- 0:22bit earlier today about the article over at ESPN dot
- 0:25com where Aaron Shatz mentioned one suggestion for every team
- 0:31to add between now and training camp. Let's first bring
- 0:35in Andrew to check O from the Inside the Birds
- 0:38podcast Inside the Birds dot Com as he joined us
- 0:40on a Football at four Tuesday. Andrew, welcome back, man,
- 0:44how are you.
- 0:45Speaker 2: How's it going, Mike?
- 0:46Speaker 1: Great to be with you as always. Man, it's a
- 0:48fun time. We are getting ready for summer. But inside
- 0:52one month till training camp. That means July twenty second,
- 0:56back out there grinding it out, getting ready for camp.
- 1:00You know, and many people look at this Eagles team.
- 1:02Let's start there, Andrew, do you think this is a
- 1:05finished product before they get to the July twenty second
- 1:09report date.
- 1:12Speaker 2: As of right now, I'm inclined to say yes and listen.
- 1:15I've been a big believer in allowing the players that
- 1:18you've devoted time to developing to go out there and
- 1:22prove it with these events, with these extended opportunities. And
- 1:25then if you're not getting what you see or what
- 1:27you envision from those players, well then maybe look outside
- 1:30and try to get a reinforcement. But that they've dedicated
- 1:33so much time to the different players that we've talked
- 1:36about that maybe a lot have questions about, So I
- 1:38think you want to see what you have there first, all.
- 1:40Speaker 1: Right, Andrew, if they do do something outside of the
- 1:43organization and say, you know what, let's bring in another guy,
- 1:46is there a spot where you would say they don't
- 1:49need to, but if they do, these would be the spots.
- 1:54Speaker 2: Yeah, So there's really spots, and they're both on defense.
- 1:58I would say at linebacker, extremely light there. At linebacker,
- 2:01obviously jahat Campbell is due on the field sometime in August,
- 2:05and the Kobe Dean has an uncertain timeline. So Mike,
- 2:08they really just have Zach Bond, Jeremiah Troter, Junior, Dallas
- 2:12Ghent and Lance Dixon who's a rookie free agent out
- 2:15of Toledo. So they really need just another body there
- 2:18to handle some of these reps in training camp. You
- 2:22can't go into camp with just four healthy players at
- 2:24that position just for rotational purposes. And then defensive tackle
- 2:28might be a spot where they don't have a veteran.
- 2:32So you kind of look at it and say, okay, well,
- 2:34Moro Jomo is going to take a big leap this year.
- 2:37At least that's what the Eagles are expecting, and I
- 2:39think he will as well. Jordan Davis. There's a lot
- 2:41of eggs in that basket and him being able to
- 2:43play more than thirty seven percent of the defensive snaps
- 2:47which he played last year. But if you need another
- 2:50player to supplement in, especially if you don't believe that
- 2:53Ty Robinson's ready to take on a sizeable workload, well
- 2:56then an experienced defensive tackle just to add depth might
- 2:59make some.
- 3:00Speaker 1: You know interesting. Pro Football Focus just put out its
- 3:02unit rankings. They have the Eagles linebackers number one. I
- 3:05think that's based on the Kobe Dean's grades from last year.
- 3:10And here we are saying, well, they could possibly use
- 3:12another guy there, But a lot of this is predicated
- 3:14on wildcards Dean and his injury, and then of course
- 3:18you got a rookie jo I had Campbell who's also hurt.
- 3:21So while they had had the number one unit last season,
- 3:24it's still a fair question mark.
- 3:28Speaker 2: Yeah, I think so, And you know, I'm a big
- 3:29na Kobe Dean guy. Many will tell you that C. J.
- 3:32Gardner Johnson was the heartbeat of that defense, or at
- 3:36least that's what they're led to believe, But in my opinion,
- 3:38it was the Kobe Dean. His mentality, his toughness, his
- 3:42vision for what he wants the defense or wanted the
- 3:44defense to look like. That all was exuded through him.
- 3:47He channeled that energy and he talked about all the
- 3:50leadership qualities and what he's able to bring from a
- 3:53physicality standpoint right, attacking the line of scrimmage and really
- 3:57just being that tone setter. I'm curious to see when
- 4:00he works his way back. But to answer your question, yeah,
- 4:03they just don't have a lot of bodies there right now.
- 4:06You don't question the talent, especially Jihad Campbell's, Zach vaugh On, Na,
- 4:10Kobe Dean and Trotter Junior is a player that the
- 4:12Eagles really like, but just for rotational purposes, they could
- 4:15stand to add another player there. Ahead of camp.
- 4:18Speaker 1: Talk with Andrew to Checko Football a four. By the way,
- 4:20Pro Football Focus also ranked the top ten defensive lines
- 4:23in the NFL Philadelphia number two. They lose Milton Williams
- 4:28and Josh Sweat, and it seems that people still are
- 4:30excited Andrew about what's left over. And I say left over,
- 4:34not like these are sparing parts, but I guess the
- 4:36opportunity for some emergence here.
- 4:39Speaker 2: Yeah, there's a couple of players here that are going
- 4:42to be inheriting more prominent roles, none more than more Jomo,
- 4:47who is entering his third season. He kind of has
- 4:50an undersized bill, but so did Milton Williams, and Milton
- 4:53Williams was effective. Jemo has continuously got better each of
- 4:57his past two seasons. I think year three he's gone.
- 5:00It really hit his stride. Physical player, violent hands, and
- 5:04somebody who can be disruptive along the interior and really
- 5:07put some interior linemen in a bind. But the question remains,
- 5:11can he handle a larger workload without diminishing his effectiveness?
- 5:17Because when he was inserted in the games. He had
- 5:20a lot of bursts and you saw the energy that
- 5:23he was able to sort of showcase out there. So
- 5:26will a larger opportunity this season, will that diminish some
- 5:31of that effectiveness. We're going to learn about that. And
- 5:33then Jordan Davis, that's the big question. The Eagles are
- 5:36banking on him sort of continuing that development what you
- 5:39saw to end the postseason. I don't know if he's
- 5:42ever going to be a pass rush phenom from that position,
- 5:46but I do think that he needs to and he
- 5:48can provide you with a little bit more of a
- 5:51responsibility this year in terms of snapshare.
- 5:53Speaker 1: All right, Angel, checkout football for here on the Sports
- 5:56bats Live. You wrote an article over at Inside the
- 5:58Birds dot Com your position previews, the spot that Aaron
- 6:02Shats over at ESPN, thought that the Eagles could still
- 6:05add to he is Tyler Boyd as a slot wide receiver.
- 6:10Now people listening might be like, hey, Boyd, Bengals, great
- 6:13run there eight seasons. Last year was in Tennessee, wasn't
- 6:16so good, But would that be something that would perk
- 6:20your interest bringing in a player like Tyler board He
- 6:23also mentioned Keenan Allen as a possible fit, But do
- 6:26you think they still should be kicking the tires on
- 6:29a slot wide receiver.
- 6:32Speaker 2: Well, it's an interesting concept, but the point remains, how
- 6:36would they fit into the offense? Right, there's only one
- 6:38football They already had a difficult time getting the ball
- 6:41to Dallas Goddard. John Dotson I think is a prime
- 6:44Canada for a bounce back season. And even he, I mean,
- 6:47twenty five thirty catches would be a bounce back because
- 6:50he had just nineteen last season. But I just and
- 6:53Tyler Boyd's a nice player. He's more of a an
- 6:56intermediate route type of player who quarterbacks have really leaned on.
- 7:01He can be a good security blanket, but he would
- 7:03probably be a fourth receiver here. And you have guys
- 7:07like Johnny Wilson and an Ayah Smith and Danny Gray
- 7:09and Terris Marshall, Who's another player that I think you're
- 7:12gonna want to highlight because he has a whole have
- 7:15a decent shot to crack the roster. So they have
- 7:18some bodies there.
- 7:18Speaker 1: I don't know that you.
- 7:19Speaker 2: Make a move at that position, Mike, until you're certain
- 7:22that the players that you have already in the fold
- 7:24aren't able to step off and seize that opportunity.
- 7:27Speaker 1: Right, So you got Brown and Smith, we know that
- 7:29Dotson seemingly is the lock to be the number three,
- 7:33and then after that, you've got this whole group of guys.
- 7:35Is there somebody in that group that we don't know
- 7:38a lot about that you are definitely going to be
- 7:41keeping an eye on. Yeah.
- 7:43Speaker 2: Danny Gray is a player that I've been talking about
- 7:45really since prior to the twenty twenty two NFL Draft.
- 7:48I interviewed him on the Inside the Birds platform for
- 7:50Draft Dreams. I liked him coming out of SMU. He
- 7:53didn't really reach expectations there at the forty nine Ers.
- 7:56He was a third round pick picked one oh five,
- 7:59I believe back in twenty two and injuries played a
- 8:03part of it. But talking to him last year, you know,
- 8:06you got the sense that he had this different perspective,
- 8:09seeing things differently. He mentioned that he probably would have
- 8:12done some things differently or approached it differently with the
- 8:15forty nine ers, and he was really focused on getting
- 8:17better and he has no lack of confidence. He said,
- 8:20if I was here last summer for a training camp,
- 8:24you know, you better believe I would have made the
- 8:26fifty three man roster, and he said, I'm not arrogant.
- 8:28It's just the amount of confidence that I have in
- 8:30my skill set and my ability. And he's also a
- 8:33player that I mean. Folks may not know this, but
- 8:35when he was on the scout team last year, he
- 8:37was often tasked with emulating the top receiver of whoever
- 8:41the Eagles were playing that week, and Jamar Chase was
- 8:44a player that he had to that he had to
- 8:46really study that week for you know, for an example,
- 8:50and he would give the starting secondary fits throughout the
- 8:53season and really prepare them for what was to come.
- 8:57So you see the skills. Maybe he's able to put
- 8:59it all together. Course, now he has that continuity with
- 9:02Kevin Patulo, who was the past game coordinator last year,
- 9:05and wide receivers coach Aaron moorehead the ability, you can't
- 9:09deny it. He runs a four to three to three.
- 9:11He looked pretty good at OTAs. He catches the ball
- 9:13well and he has good quickness. But now it's about
- 9:16where can you showcase your value because they have vacancies
- 9:20at kick returner. He wrapped a kick returner in practice
- 9:22last year. He also did that in practice from what
- 9:25we saw from the media attended OHTA sessions. So maybe
- 9:28if you're able to really showcase your skill in maybe
- 9:31a broader skill set, you can make things interesting there
- 9:34for that fifth receiver spot.
- 9:35Speaker 1: All right, let's look at running back you previewed them
- 9:37over at Inside the Birds dot com and ask the question,
- 9:40do they have enough around Saquon Barkley so he doesn't
- 9:44have to get three hundred and fifty plus touches this year?
- 9:48Speaker 2: Yeah? Exactly. So one of the primary takeaways, at least
- 9:52from my vantage point from the spring was that Saquon
- 9:56Barki has a new approach to the offseason, knowing that
- 9:59it's okay to balance the training and the rest of
- 10:02the recovery. Where earlier in his career he was helped
- 10:04bent on getting after it and being motivated by you know,
- 10:08other colleagues Derrick Henry and Christian McCaffery posting stuff on
- 10:13social media, and he felt the need that he had
- 10:15to go one up, and that's just that competitive nature.
- 10:17But he tapped into his resources this year, trainers, coaches,
- 10:21fellow running backs, and he now has a different perspective
- 10:25where he knows that it's okay to scale it back
- 10:27and know when to scale it back because you have
- 10:30to prepare for the season ahead. I think for preservation purposes,
- 10:34it would serve Leagles well to mix in some of
- 10:36the other running backs, which I believe they will this season.
- 10:39I think Will Shipley as a complimentary change of pace
- 10:42running back is going to be somebody that Eagles look
- 10:45to this season more kind of maybe even a little
- 10:47bit more than Kenny Gangwell because he can catch the
- 10:50football well. The question with him becomes past protection. And
- 10:53then aj Dillon, of course was signed as a free agent.
- 10:56He has that between the tackles power. He doesn't necessary
- 11:00we have this, so he doesn't have the same burst,
- 11:01but there's a lot of things that he can bring
- 11:04in terms of look at him as a closer and
- 11:07in certain situations where Saquon Barkley was forced to miss
- 11:10a game or two, well, AJ Dillon would be the
- 11:12player who's going to handle the eighteen to twenty two
- 11:15carriers or what have you, because he's more equipped to
- 11:17do that. So they have a lot of good players
- 11:19and pieces there that I think blend well together. And
- 11:22for the offense to ultimately evolve, you have to be
- 11:25strategic and how you utilize Saquon Barkley and really start
- 11:29to tap into that passing game.
- 11:30Speaker 1: All right, Andrew checho football at four yesterday. The tight
- 11:34End University. A lot of stuff coming out of that,
- 11:36and the title was a big question. And then they
- 11:39got Goddard to come back, and you wonder, what kind
- 11:43of evolution do we see in the tight end game
- 11:45with the group of guys that are here now?
- 11:49Speaker 2: Great question, Yeah, and the tight End University. So Dallas
- 11:52Goddard was there, grand Ka Katerra was there. EJ. Jenkins
- 11:55was there, and so was Nick Muse, who actually I
- 11:58wrote this in my story. He was like Joe Stands
- 12:00in that he left on a high note. His best
- 12:02practice was best His best practice was mandatory mini camp,
- 12:07where he had about three splash worthy plays, including a
- 12:11touchdown the red zone and one where he sort of
- 12:14extended like an outfielder and was parallel to the ground
- 12:17from about twenty five yards out. But I really like
- 12:20what they have there. All of a sudden, this is
- 12:22a pretty deep tight end room and versatile and so
- 12:25you see Dallas Goddard and I have to think we
- 12:27say this every year, this has to be the year
- 12:29where he really is a little bit more involved, and
- 12:32if not more involved in terms of volume, maybe they
- 12:35get creative in how they utilize him because the middle
- 12:37of the field has been underutilized, and I think Doddard's
- 12:40ability to stretch defenses vertically and really put that type
- 12:43of unique stress on defenses has been something that the
- 12:46Eagles haven't really turned to. So I'm curious to see
- 12:49under Kevin Batulo if they try to, you know, maximize
- 12:53Goddard's ability because he is one healthy, one of the
- 12:56best players at that position. Then of course you have
- 12:59Grant Calcutara, who can catch really well. He's been a
- 13:02great story of development. I think you have to give
- 13:03credit to Grant, but also tight ends coach Jason Michael.
- 13:07Grant is somebody that Jalen Hurts has trust in. He
- 13:10doesn't give you much as a blocker, though he is willing,
- 13:12but I think right now he's probably entrench in that
- 13:14number two spot. And then they signed two free agents
- 13:16and Harris and Bryant Kylon Grants, and that feel like
- 13:19they're duking it out for what for a position that
- 13:22may or not exist at the number three tight end spot.
- 13:24Because Leagle has had a lot of success last season
- 13:27going with two and then elevating a player from the
- 13:30practice squad.
- 13:31Speaker 1: All right, Andrew to check it, Let's fire off a
- 13:33couple of quick user excuse me, listener questions here of
- 13:36the mailbag edition, we'll do five quickies with Andrew to
- 13:40check o. Here, Andrew, Number one, how much influence will
- 13:43special teams play have on that wide receiver room.
- 13:48Speaker 2: Wow, that's a great one, and that's like music to
- 13:50my ears because this is this stuff that doesn't get
- 13:53talked about enough, and it's going to play a huge
- 13:56factor because you have to look at it in terms
- 13:58of how coach are going to view the game day value.
- 14:02You can only dress too many players. So for example,
- 14:04someone like an Ania Smith, he's only a slot player.
- 14:07And if he's not going to factor into the top
- 14:10three or four of the rotation and he can't help you,
- 14:13let's say on punt return or kickoff coverage, well, what
- 14:16will be the purpose of activating him? I think someone
- 14:19like a Danny Gray who potentially can return kicks and
- 14:23be that vertical threat because speed is at a premium
- 14:25in today's NFL, that's some value. Johnny Wilson playing twenty
- 14:29four percent of the special team snaps last year and
- 14:32doing the dirty work as a blocker on offense probably
- 14:34doesn't get talked about enough, doesn't show up in the
- 14:36box score, but that's something that I think could give
- 14:39him a leg up over some of those challengers. But
- 14:42Terres Marshall is somebody that I mentioned. He hasn't played
- 14:45much special teams at all in his career, but if
- 14:48he can give you a little bit more of a
- 14:49pass catching up side, I think he can certainly fulfill
- 14:53some of the duties that Johnny Wilson had to do
- 14:55last year. But it's gonna be really interesting to see
- 14:57how this pans out because the X factor here to
- 15:00me is a Nias Smith because he was a decorated
- 15:03punt returner at Texas A and M. And if he's
- 15:05able to showcase that ability and maybe hold off Avery
- 15:09Williams in that department, let's say, well, then he will
- 15:12have value on game day and he'll be your punt returner.
- 15:15Speaker 1: A good point because somebody asked this question, Andrew, is
- 15:18Avery Williams in your mind the front runner for the
- 15:21return jobs.
- 15:24Speaker 2: Right now? I would say yes, But it's also important
- 15:26to note that he was sidelined for rots with an
- 15:29undisclosed injury. But when you hear Nick Sirianni practically gush
- 15:33over this player, which was a pretty innocuous signing, I
- 15:36think a lot of us sort of glossed over it.
- 15:38And he mentioned he sort of implied that they have
- 15:41plans to involve him offensively. Now they're listing him as
- 15:44a wide receiver. He played cornerback and running back for
- 15:47the Falcons, so he has some some type of explosive
- 15:50qualities and I think because of that, he has the
- 15:53inside track. But if someone like a Nia Smith really
- 15:56emerges and can give you a little bit at receiver
- 15:58and flash there, but he can merge as a pump returner,
- 16:01well then I think you can use Avery Williams as
- 16:03that kick returner and then sporadically utilize him offensively.
- 16:06Speaker 1: All right, And to check o a couple more in
- 16:08the mailbag here, is there an upgrade on the roster
- 16:12to Johnny Wilson or will he be that wide receiver
- 16:15for this year?
- 16:17Speaker 2: Yeah, it's a great question. I see we're getting a
- 16:19lot of wide receiver questions, and I think if you
- 16:22look at someone who can it's not apples to apples.
- 16:25But if you look at someone who can fulfill a
- 16:27similar role. Terras Marshall is a bigger, bodied wide receiver.
- 16:31I think if he shows a willingness to be able
- 16:33to mix it up, play selfless football and do that
- 16:36dirty work to free up teammates and things like that,
- 16:39he's going to have that shot to step up and
- 16:41take that type of role because he gives you more
- 16:44as a pass catcher, at least, he's proven that over
- 16:46eight hundred receiving yards in his career. And he looked good.
- 16:50I mean he looked good in OTAs. He has some
- 16:53chemistry with Devonte Smith, looked like jaywhen Hurtz didn't have
- 16:57any issues going his way. You know, normally when you
- 16:59have a newer target there in the past, Jaywin has
- 17:02to develop that kind of chemistry. But that wasn't necessarily
- 17:05the case this spring. So I think if there were
- 17:07a player, it would be Terras Marshall.
- 17:08Speaker 1: All right, we'll do one more here on the offensive line, Andrew,
- 17:11do you think Matt Pryor is a bigger a challenger
- 17:15to that spot over Kenyon Green for Tyler Steen's spot
- 17:19at the right guard spot.
- 17:22Speaker 2: I absolutely do, because look, when Kenyon Green was acquired
- 17:26in that CJ. Gardner Johnson trade. Many just assumed that, okay,
- 17:30he was once a first round pick, a decorated player.
- 17:33The Eagles brought him in for you know, a thirty visit,
- 17:36so there's interest there. Well that it's all true, but
- 17:39let's not forget that Kenyon Green was grated as one
- 17:42of the worst players at his position in the sport.
- 17:45And I mean, Jeff Stalin has his hands full there,
- 17:48but he's going to have to work with him a
- 17:50little bit. Where someone like Matt Pryor played over one
- 17:51thousand snaps last season with the Bears, He's played a
- 17:54ton of football. He was running with the second team.
- 17:57Take it for what it is in OTAs with second
- 18:00team when we last saw the Eagles, and it was
- 18:03Kenyon Green who was working on the third team. And
- 18:06he can play left or right guard. I mean, best
- 18:08case scenario in my opinion, Mike Kenyon Green's sort of
- 18:11vying for the Tyler Steam role of last season, where
- 18:13it can be that multi faceted guard on game bay
- 18:16that you can kind of plug in. But I think
- 18:18Matt Pryor right now is probably the primary challenger to
- 18:21Tyler Stein.
- 18:22Speaker 1: That's answer to Checko everybody. Football at four a little breakdown.
- 18:25You can check out all the position previews over at
- 18:28Inside the Birds dot com and Football at four. We're
- 18:31gearing up for training camp July twenty second. We're inside
- 18:34a month. Andrew can't wait for it. Appreciate your time
- 18:36as always.
- 18:37Speaker 2: Man, do you bet Mike talks soon? All right?
- 18:40Speaker 1: That's answer to checko for Football at four today on
- 18:42the Sports Bash Live on ninety seven three ESPN
