- 1:05our guests today. Help me.
- 1:06Welcome mr. Earnest Moss.
- 1:08As how are you sir? I'm blessed and highly favored.
- 1:11On this side of the earth is, there is going pretty good and I
- 1:20will open up full-time but doing The Hobbit schedule.
- 1:22So we're we're doing in person teaching, as well as I am person
- 1:26coaching start off at the same. I believe progressional most
- 1:30people with smaller groups are in the classroom if your class
- 1:33bigger than 14, countertop that and a half little bit.
- 1:36Then if we're approaching me started working from nine and
- 1:39kind of progressive, what the way up to the progression of the
- 1:41Cities, skylines? You know, I could for ten years
- 1:45before I came over to this side and certainly here on the yellow
- 1:49specifically track and field equipment manufacturer inside.
- 1:51There's some issues with schools closed.
- 1:54No seasons and things like that. But I can't imagine being a
- 1:58coach right now that it's normally a tough thing to do,
- 2:02right? I mean, do the scheduling and
- 2:04processes, and stuff like that. And now having these smaller
- 2:07groups. These I've heard of like almost
- 2:10pods like, you had to coach the same for five kids together
- 2:14because they live together. It doesn't matter what events
- 2:17are you. They are in and things like
- 2:18that, that's just got to be, you know, you've added a lot of
- 2:21complexity on an already complex work to coach and I think we're
- 2:28going to meet situation, like, we're in a profession.
- 2:32Where are we doing a lot of uncertainty on a daily basis.
- 2:34Even though we made plans in place, what is a workout plan?
- 2:38Where they sell meteorite in Terraria?
- 2:39When there's a schedule or travel itinerary Indianapolis
- 2:43and show up? You know, I'll take a line from
- 2:45a great mentor friend of mine, George Williams.
- 2:48You said, you know, what's about?
- 2:50Take away the bonuses. You know, she always approach
- 2:52today with at the end of the day, Looking for a Golf Mill.
- 2:55If you have nothing many takeaways and a lot of bonuses,
- 2:58they tax plan park off. You know, some trying to get a
- 3:01birdie is great, but the expectation is just to
- 3:03trampoline park off of cutting boys.
- 3:06If you're going to listen, anybody listen to Listen to
- 3:08George, has done it all and continues to do a tall man.
- 3:13Love that guy. Yeah, you're right.
- 3:15You know, coaches were so used to doing so much with so little
- 3:19and being so flexible. We definitely do have I think
- 3:22the advantage going into something like this, pandemic.
- 3:25We're okay. It's, I don't want to call it
- 3:27just another day because this is different than what we've ever
- 3:29had. However, maybe track coaches,
- 3:32specifically are the most prepared to be unprepared, the
- 3:42transition and weather and location and what have you
- 3:45absolutely may. I tell you that you and I have
- 3:48been talking to the last few weeks.
- 3:50Really excited to chop it up with you today about some
- 3:54Coaching progressions and coaching career, progressions,
- 3:57not necessarily. You know, when I'm going to take
- 3:59a long jumper through beginning to 20 foot plus long jumper,
- 4:03we're going to talk about your coaching career progression
- 4:06coaching mentality today or we get on that subject.
- 4:10Why don't we take a step back and learn a little bit more
- 4:12about you and your athletic and coaching background?
- 4:15I know you're a Western Carolina grad in a loan from Western
- 4:20Carolina to get the door. Do you want me to?
- 4:24Are you from that area originally or where did you like
- 4:33those High School in track and all that Rowan County and I was
- 4:39born and raised in Salisbury North Carolina.
- 4:41But with the North Branch High School, some people try to ask
- 4:44you, some people have it. Class 95 from 94-95.
- 4:50I believe in 95, we score 248 points at the state meet so I
- 4:55don't know what that was a record number of points or not,
- 4:57but we scored it and everything like that, that we qualify that
- 5:01is that is North Rowan and maybe two mixed up with another guy.
- 5:05I know I've no, of North Rowan, but is that triple jump pie?
- 5:08Is that where all the clues that really good trouble?
- 5:11Jumper ended up going to Indiana.
- 5:12I thought he was from northern 500 mL 2 times Champion, High
- 5:27School, record, and then turn around.
- 5:29And both the triple jump, High School record Friday, going to
- 5:31Indiana. So, yeah, we called the airport
- 5:34and turns with football. Bye.
- 5:35But I also think that you can color the airport for jumping,
- 5:38we had a pretty good history of they had about 48, guys.
- 5:41Jump over 48 feet. Come out of there.
- 5:47Harmony still Junior. What was his background?
- 5:52Why did why such a deep successful civically?
- 5:55In those events? You started, you know, what
- 5:58people thought I was jumping in a mental coach that coaches up,
- 6:03so use about three hundred, fifteen bucks town, and so yeah.
- 6:09So there's some different kind of printed out.
- 6:12The other jumping on the old band directors boxes and
- 6:15everything before the knife file boxes that are out there now
- 6:18I'll for kids to jump on or trained on it so you know what
- 6:22you did a lot of hard work and when he learned the event he was
- 6:25able to individualize a lot of different things for us.
- 6:29We did the old school right now to workouts.
- 6:31No, computers tell Batiste to get it to stay because you work
- 6:34out. You know.
- 6:35He passed away about that big ass to have a couple pieces and
- 6:37then I'll just kind of store is missing and you know, what do
- 6:42you think? I talked to him a little bit,
- 6:44you know, when and we all said in Spanish, Did you and summer
- 6:48track? Well, before it really explode.
- 6:50It you know if I remember rolling Express but we kind of
- 6:54word palangi off of the national recognized those drivers.
- 6:58Oh yeah, right. Wow, that's amazing.
- 7:02Where you at jumper. Were you part of that jumps crew
- 7:04of all don't really go over earlier?
- 7:06I may still be on the county, all-time Lewis at least, maybe
- 7:10in the top 10. Maybe I was more cuz I worked
- 7:24Indiana University campus in the summer.
- 7:26So I got to meet you and stuff like that.
- 7:28He look like a white or like a wide receiver in football,
- 7:34right? It is so we actually was a
- 7:37strong safety on it to Atlanta, well, that makes sense.
- 7:47That scene, he was daring and do you have a great great, great
- 7:51coach that end up meeting later on, but Greg was the first one.
- 7:54I was a senior. So my coach, of course, you
- 7:57could not jump around and down there, then you had a couple
- 7:59good knee surgeon. So, yeah, she asked me to go and
- 8:02work with Greg. So so very fortunate to work
- 8:06with Greg and Alabama final score of the Arizona State.
- 8:13That's so cool. I love that.
- 8:15You said North Carolina had a good career there.
- 8:24When did the actual profession of coaching?
- 8:27Kind of inner your mind, did you always grown up your high
- 8:31school? Think you were going to be a
- 8:32coach or what? When did that start triggering
- 8:34for you, bending and certain things just got to work on
- 8:38people. I'm getting really realize that
- 8:40on my path has been charted. The right before my eyes are not
- 8:43me, you know what about it? So, when I was in my fifth year
- 8:45at Western have to come up with the hip surgery.
- 8:47It will be up there. You know, I was going to refund
- 8:50my love and my passenger, let me run to the store and then get up
- 8:54and around 20 to 23, I mean, yeah, yeah, yeah, I was out came
- 9:01back cuz I want to come back and and in the midst of that, I
- 9:06still have a little bit of controversy about flip files and
- 9:10that goes that will go back and forth.
- 9:13Of course, outside you do now is breaking the plane.
- 9:16But you know, I was I was always close to hitting, you know, the
- 9:19B Mark R Us's, you do at the Nationals, what before they had
- 9:23the 48, you know, going into the Region's, you know, we only had
- 9:27a few marks, will you get on a provisional?
- 9:28It's not was it so little bit tougher, right?
- 9:31And so, so now you're I said well when you have a chance to
- 9:36go ahead and take the Mark, I was still in pretty good shape
- 9:38and it was laying and was still excited so so I can dream about,
- 9:43you know, grad assistant grad assistant, my thinking is
- 9:46nothing about a master degree, really?
- 9:47But hey you know what? You ain't get a degree while
- 9:50still training closest. I'm by the way to pay my bills,
- 9:53I was training. End up going up to I said, call
- 9:56the Fairfield Connecticut and I really didn't think about
- 10:00coaching and tell it to my head up about 15 years of my career.
- 10:05And I was like, yeah, seriously. That's interesting.
- 10:09So you mention grad school and this was a topic.
- 10:13I wanted to make sure I asked you about.
- 10:15So, doing my research on you, you're so you get your
- 10:18undergrad. I love.
- 10:19I respect it so much cuz his Communications with public
- 10:22relations, which I was a Communications and public
- 10:25relations Majors, that maybe that's why you and I have always
- 10:27kind of clicked since we've known each other for the
- 10:30Decorah. However, I was done with school
- 10:33soon as I got my undergrad. There was never a thought of
- 10:35going to grad school and all that kind of stuff, and I barely
- 10:39made it out with a sheet of paper for my undergrad.
- 10:42So I was done. You went on, I love it that you
- 10:44went on and got a master's degree, you might have the most
- 10:48interesting master's degree I've ever heard of.
- 10:52So I'm going to try to say it out loud.
- 10:54You correct me where I get wrong.
- 10:56So you have a masters of psychology gifted and talented
- 10:59and multiple intelligences. What?
- 11:05What is that? Besides it sounds like you
- 11:07studied. I was going to get.
- 11:08Joe can play that you studied me your multiple and gifted and
- 11:11talented but you didn't you didn't study me.
- 11:12What does that mean? What does talented intelligences
- 11:17under a Psychology major. So when I, when I was looking at
- 11:28gratitude, the positions and understanding sometimes high
- 11:32school, start in September of August and in the Southeast, I
- 11:37had to get Lana into a program on probation just because you
- 11:41know, damn testing MCAT things like that.
- 11:43So when I got into the program, I was against it was like, Hey,
- 11:49I just like to get this job not more.
- 11:51So he'll want to proceed as degree, right?
- 11:53And then in the midst of it, they said wall because I'm out
- 11:58early that program was it was transitioning from a commuter
- 12:01school to a resident school, they said, well, you lie.
- 12:05Design for you to do a southern game for 4 years and then you
- 12:08spend your last year year-and-a-half doing the
- 12:10student teaching and learning some of the other things that
- 12:14receive your master. So, 105, you're programmed
- 12:16correct. So they said, you can pretty
- 12:18much design your own degree. I said no problem.
- 12:21So my inspiration one for running, one of my major
- 12:25operations were on the track as well as getting my Master's
- 12:28Degree. Believe it or not and she's not
- 12:30here on this Earth anymore. As my older sister, bring them
- 12:33all and that she was asking. Now, when we look at the
- 12:36research, she was went from being a manic-depressive to
- 12:39being bipolar. One is schizophrenic.
- 12:42And so, I pursued my Master's in the midst of trying to
- 12:46understand my sister. Talk about the word,
- 12:50understanding later on. So I can see if my dad has been
- 12:53charged without me, even knowing it and then so before she really
- 12:58passed on, Clearly, she always, you know, nothing of interest in
- 13:05my career, but she was always you know, that my are my career.
- 13:08And so I just told us that you would have no reason why I went
- 13:11the right track and you're the sole reason of Steel.
- 13:15So it wasn't like I just heard about those skills.
- 13:17She going to do some coke still like 13 years old, right.
- 13:25But going there and getting induced you to the world of
- 13:29track and field. My dad was a great athlete.
- 13:32Get know about a monk was a great athlete didn't know about
- 13:34it till I was thirty years ago. So it's additional kind of
- 13:38raising up in the black house. Ol keeping secrets ball,
- 13:43football Glee. Now getting those classes and
- 13:51Professor. Sherry Earl, who helped identify
- 13:56what you do, a TDY stand up. When you have to understand at
- 14:008, Because of the stigma, ADD and ADHD without you for that
- 14:04today. And there were certain things
- 14:07and trying to study in a multiple intelligences, there is
- 14:109 multiple challenges out there to understand that people have
- 14:12three of the four judges have about five or six it.
- 14:16So, when you really look at the moment, I'm telling you is you
- 14:17really can gain understanding noticing.
- 14:19You never understand again people and how they learn and
- 14:24and how they may receive information and process
- 14:26information on how do you learn? So I love that your sister was
- 14:30your inspiration to learn this. And obviously, she meant a lot
- 14:33to you because I mean, I hate to say that seems like everything
- 14:37stems from your sister's car, as you introduce you to the cover,
- 14:40like what an influence, she had positive influence, she had on
- 14:42you, it did. As you went through those
- 14:45studies that it help. You understand her conditions
- 14:48better. I did it connects you more with
- 14:50her, it did because I like the bass up like every psychology
- 14:54course they had. And and so when you kind of have
- 14:58a certain not in this April We have a certain understanding,
- 15:02your perception and Viewpoint changes cuz now I can understand
- 15:06OK Google call Dallas, that same thing with culture, something
- 15:10they have been a traumatic event may happen or we may have a
- 15:13great Passion, the conversation, but then I can kind of pick and
- 15:16choose our to the conversation if I wanted you.
- 15:19And I both wanted to end the conversation.
- 15:20So there was there was no conflict but you still want your
- 15:23voice to be heard and also you don't want her to feel devalued.
- 15:27And it's really, with my sister, I was learning to be a coach,
- 15:31didn't know, it was going to be a teacher because he also was
- 15:36the one that wanted, you know, like a dog.
- 15:38But when I was like, your workouts are your lesson, plans,
- 15:48your track is your classroom is just a non-traditional,
- 15:51classroom opening, the floodgates opened up on charges
- 15:56of trying to learn as much as I could.
- 15:58I love that because you're right, communication is key,
- 16:01it's interesting how important communication is and yet and how
- 16:04simple communication can be and we are definitely here in 2020.
- 16:08We have so many avenues for deferred communication, right?
- 16:12Social media, obviously you face-to-face Zoom calls things
- 16:15like that and yet it continues to be one of the hardest things
- 16:19to do and do right communicate with others, so much,
- 16:29inspiration from your sister with that, it's so awesome.
- 16:32That's great to learn to walk us through, is Sacred Heart for
- 16:35graduate school. Where were some of the next
- 16:37stops as you go from now I need to find a way to pay for school
- 16:41without schools done. How to talk to us about the
- 16:44actual career coaching real estate home.
- 16:47Networking for my marketing background, really supposed to
- 16:50graduate with a degree in marketing and sales.
- 16:52So but that made you was very early but end up meeting a guy
- 16:56named Just one coat was I knew a guy named Mark Davis, who that
- 17:05may may sound very familiar to you.
- 17:06And Mark Davis actually W test and so you know that name is
- 17:12well, so my next job and don't see me trying to scramble go
- 17:16through. And, you know, it wasn't coming
- 17:18from the power 5. I came from, you know, where a
- 17:21mid-major or mid to buy the best way to put it in.
- 17:25You know, we got Clyde Simmons, you got some rest and Carolina
- 17:48score But now I do. You know, I got you a blue coat
- 18:12at Lehigh and then turn around and go to Lafayette.
- 18:14And why is that so unique? Because Carly and step outside
- 18:19of Army and Navy in college sports.
- 18:23I didn't know that. So, you know, the story I've
- 18:26been where you're only about 15 miles apart and so, they used to
- 18:30think the story was back in the day when people are alive right
- 18:35now. So they would drop the Freshman
- 18:39off on on Leon's campus and they would leave them.
- 18:43And so they had to run all way back from the back to Lafayette
- 18:45to get the story from wrong. And that's kind of how the first
- 18:49Cross Country meets we're going on.
- 18:51And it was figuring out who's freshly to run back to campus
- 18:54and passes. That's going to have a robbery
- 18:56started, right? Indiana basketball football.
- 19:01So you told me, so then from there in the Pennsylvania on
- 19:05down to Davidson College Years of Shadow, Steph Curry and
- 19:11Yandel. And his mom are great people.
- 19:14Learn a lot of good stuff and Gary Gary injuries and so went
- 19:20in there. Pretty quickly up to you.
- 19:22I got to check your head coach 31, Virginia State sign up for
- 19:26the Trojans, and I was able to kind of really see things in a
- 19:29different level on that you have always interested in, you know,
- 19:32we get a lot of coaches in a very few of us will actually go
- 19:35on to become head. Coach is right, there's only so
- 19:37many slots for head coaches when there's, you know, maybe three
- 19:40to four times more slots for assistant, coaches.
- 19:43What did you learn? You got a pretty good history up
- 19:46to this point of you, knowing you, you're in it, right?
- 19:48You know what it means to be tricode.
- 19:50It's your career at this point and then you become a head
- 19:54coach. What were some things that
- 19:56change that time baby? If I surprised you didn't
- 19:58realize you were going to have to do acts, are you to be
- 20:00responsible for a while? I won't force you to pay for
- 20:05Genesis. And this is the roster for the
- 20:07day on the job changed completely.
- 20:11And that was the coldest day of being a head coach outside of
- 20:16sleeping and it was like a rocket ship and and so I had to
- 20:21learn a lot of baptism by fire. Yeah.
- 20:24I was kind of one of those things you like a level 1 level
- 20:262 and there's ATF education, right?
- 20:28So no one uses the general knowledge of the sport, right?
- 20:33So they got to get your love. Snapshot of every single
- 20:37terraria. What level to get deeper into
- 20:39those areas until the fire is in the snack with nature but then
- 20:43When I when you look at being an assistant coach or you just are
- 20:46not coaching and I had a lot of my jobs, are you said a lot of
- 20:56my jobs intern jobs? They were 1 year or Chandler
- 21:01position that paid a stipend, don't benefit.
- 21:04And so I was, I was still running close to leave early, so
- 21:09I was just not really in that mindset of like bills and I'm
- 21:14really trying to pay rent of that.
- 21:15Just trying to really stay up all day and still, right?
- 21:23So, so from their going into like, really looking at coaching
- 21:29and and really haven't you even lie.
- 21:32I made a goal of mine to learn everything you getting up there
- 21:35today just don't want to be a head.
- 21:37Coach said, I never want my sisters to not know about
- 21:39something or I don't want to add these to suffer because Lack of
- 21:44protein, lack of knowledge. Like the equipment is, right?
- 21:49Because you helped me survive that job a lot of great success
- 21:53and failures. But I was kind of learning and
- 21:57it's been able to help change the energy into the other, you
- 22:01know, 2/3 of my career that so far.
- 22:04So coaches are famous and in a true.
- 22:07But they're famous for saying, you know, you don't learn much
- 22:10when you win. You learn more when you lose,
- 22:13you know you talked about your failures what is it okay to put
- 22:16me on the spot here like that, you mention there's a lot of
- 22:18failures there. What?
- 22:20What's one failure that you can think of that?
- 22:22You might share with us that you that was a big learning for you.
- 22:26Don't think having such a big heart and in understanding that
- 22:32everybody is out there for the same purpose and also where were
- 22:35here except me about 287 on the roster, right?
- 22:38Would you like a football game? But you know at the gate you say
- 22:42we got about 164 and so in the mist of me having to do so many
- 22:47different things, I didn't understand the whole thing of my
- 22:51depth charts in this that whatever because to me track and
- 22:53field is presented as an opportunity sport you know when
- 22:56so ever as opportunity you can go out there and you can run you
- 22:59go out to eat and run jump throw away all those with limited
- 23:03captured off the right runjumpthrow and so that was my
- 23:06Approach but the problem is a business standpoint, not a good
- 23:09decision because now what's going on is because I knew so
- 23:14much about each event and I'm going to check reminder install
- 23:16real big on a really OCD about technique specialist a piece and
- 23:20point I was trying to get it by the bees that technical athlete
- 23:23like me. Can you do that?
- 23:26Could you do that? Basketball was kind of her
- 23:40background but it really do show me like everything for
- 23:44everybody. But that took me five years to
- 23:47understand that. I was, I was a little young, I
- 23:50got a relief. Go to the store and look like
- 23:52when Jon Gruden first went into the NFL as a head coach and in
- 23:56any of his account at Tampa Bay, Inn, failed, miserably a little
- 23:59bit, right? You know, the conference
- 24:04Championship, everyone, my personal bills wins first time
- 24:08together and then follow back up and it will become.
- 24:11So, we end up going to end up, going to win a championship.
- 24:26But then I learned a lot on paper pretty successful with
- 24:44over a hundred and fifty and I pushing a hundred 780 kids at
- 24:48Virginia state. How many coaches did you have to
- 24:53do that stuff? I tell you because you
- 24:56mentioned, it's your roster. Size is a lot like football in a
- 24:59football, have a hundred plus almost every campus, right?
- 25:02That I can pick up. Anyway, it almost seems like
- 25:05they have a tackles coach of guards coach, a center coach
- 25:09tide in cahoots. Outside receiver coach insiders
- 25:12at me. They've got so many coaches and
- 25:14I'm not like I'm not a guy who talks about taking away from
- 25:19other sports so that we can have more for track.
- 25:21I'm more of a let's grow track that.
- 25:24I cannot believe one. Full-time coach for that many
- 25:27kids. It's, it's really a disservice
- 25:30to the kids as well as the coach who you know, pull your hair
- 25:32out. Kind of thing isn't
- 25:34understanding Network Dan and and in the process of trying to
- 25:41look, listen to go to off and try to get the job done.
- 25:44Letting, you know, because you do we have my schedule one time
- 25:48will be 6 a.m. practice for for the cross-country kids, or I
- 25:52would do all training for the track kids, early in the morning
- 25:55and then turning around and do cross-country that was in season
- 25:58in the afternoon if that background.
- 25:59So really, I mean, a lot of the work ethic in the hardware for
- 26:02my upbringing and just my dad, you were working three shifts in
- 26:06a row, you know what, the factory.
- 26:08And so I just got to take that mentality and just knew it was
- 26:11there. Now what I do not all over again
- 26:13snow you know. And so are we at we have
- 26:17sometimes it's what I'm trying to interview some people but you
- 26:21know, When you're not in full control of the other process,
- 26:25you know, you just understand procedure and protocol and
- 26:28sometimes procedures protocols and always think the person.
- 26:30But you, but you still got to follow procedure and protocol a
- 26:34good points. So you end up winning conference
- 26:37at Virginia state. That's awesome.
- 26:39That the high note for sure, where did it take you after
- 26:42that? Where did you go from?
- 26:43Virginia state, and the ended up, you know working with some
- 26:49great people being around straight people, end up coach in
- 26:52by 2 in the shoulder jumpers, in the Southeast to doing some
- 26:56great things. Antonio Miller who is now
- 26:59running at a club in Virginia Staley, been about five foot
- 27:03five and the end up going, like, I think like 48 some change and
- 27:07door. Then we had a young lady named
- 27:10Roseberry, a lawsuit from school, turned it down because
- 27:16of the right, everything, but she ended up in like 5 and 3/4
- 27:19probably at least 11 to 12 times.
- 27:22She was really, but the trick was, she was a world-class
- 27:29order. So because of all the years of
- 27:31riding a horse in the, other than that, it was work.
- 27:34She was a lot of coke into Ecentric strength, training
- 27:37continuously. And so you able to take that and
- 27:39transferred it into a vertical lift daughter.
- 27:44So different, we got plans or see those kind of think so.
- 27:58And I love, I love the, the stuff that is like, unexpected,
- 28:02right. Do you know where we are on
- 28:04track and field podcast and we end up learning and an athlete
- 28:07who 5/8 by the way? And I jump nothing to do.
- 28:09So that's a big man. Any day, right?
- 28:13But she's a world-class sorter so that the horse and she makes
- 28:19sheep go one way. And that kind of thing.
- 28:22Yes, and yes, maybe she was trying to take the sheet and act
- 28:24like a cowboy and the most I ever had.
- 28:36I had a really, really good. Quarter mile, are that I
- 28:39recruited at Ball State and she's from Ohio, from
- 28:41Worthington, Ohio, big time. If I remember correctly, the
- 28:51ping, pong. Ping, pong.
- 28:51Racket ball. Players are my recruiting calls
- 29:01and visits was like we had talked track.
- 29:03I was like tell me more than a wreck on the ICF walls of where
- 29:10Bayport sport Bruno a little bit.
- 29:22I guess there's a, there's a nationally-ranked pickleball
- 29:27player, Jackson no one in his age group, so, yeah, I love
- 29:31ping-pong ping-pong. So that's, that's a good way of
- 29:37knowing, I'm going back to the ballroom documentaries about New
- 29:48York City and stuff like that. So it's literally your hand in
- 29:52your head, but what is squash a gesture, but I'll be in the
- 30:15negative, so bad. There wasn't a lot of lot of
- 30:27good. It was too hot so they figure
- 30:29out a way to go on play something at Dudley's.
- 30:32So they came up with this damn squash to play in the room until
- 30:35we look at the world-class squash tournaments during a
- 30:37clear Road and it's hitting lines on and they just stand
- 30:40there. Hitting a small rubber balls in
- 30:42different densities of it. You got it around.
- 30:44You have the longer I can look right.
- 30:53And so it gets pretty big just put in text what you describe
- 30:58sounds like what I have in my head for a racquetball, do it in
- 31:01a room with all these blind fools, couple the Court's, the
- 31:06same, except on the front wall, where you got to hit it above
- 31:10the line and you got it. Like after that one bounce, it
- 31:14dies completely as opposed to Wrecking Ball.
- 31:17Decided I'm going to look around the ceiling around the world
- 31:20that you would have caught up to you.
- 31:21You know, you can't get the corner so you really like to
- 31:24change it up a little more leveled up close to tennis
- 31:27right, listening to the elections podcast, it's going to
- 31:31help you with jeopardy with your trivia night.
- 31:33Maybe go play, trivia Pursuit with your family.
- 31:34You are going to understand Z shots and around the world and
- 31:37hit you with all the way all because you listened to track
- 31:40coaches man, that's awesome. I love that.
- 31:42Okay. But let's let's get back to
- 31:44track cuz that sucked as much as squash and Racquetball track is
- 31:48its way up here, right? That's way way more interesting
- 31:50at least for me. So where we at?
- 31:56You are Radford. Coach at Radford some great
- 31:59jumpers there. Keep keep going for us, went
- 32:02back to West Carolina. Got a chance to really work
- 32:04around a lotta and shut up Darren Wilson a great coach
- 32:09great. God, great mentor.
- 32:10Father, son and I and I was able to actually get my first Women's
- 32:18Conference Championship in terms of really at Weston that was
- 32:23saying first championship. He got Western shows, I was
- 32:26going to come to pay. Homage to him with that cuz I
- 32:28miss my car charger cuz they want the man want it.
- 32:31But it's good to get the women to gain opportunity to help me
- 32:35get the job at Toledo. And so I got a chance to be as
- 32:40close to the pop out. If you could be an experience
- 32:42the world in Toledo and Mac football and basketball and, you
- 32:47know, goes out there in Iowa, State and a great guy to talk
- 32:52with him and he was young, but just to see him elevating high
- 32:55chair on himself, really. I think That's when I really
- 32:59started to look at coaching different 10 years and at this
- 33:06point I was 13 years old, 14 years ago.
- 33:09What was that? What was being looked at
- 33:12differently? You know, and are experiencing
- 33:17success? But are you allowed to see?
- 33:19Barbie said he had all his success but it wasn't enjoying
- 33:22it. So when you look back and look
- 33:24on a resume, you see, Champion is reading to call Friday to
- 33:28record. You know, I wasn't really
- 33:30enjoying because I didn't outside of the training.
- 33:33I didn't see any kind of forecasting.
- 33:36And so, when I miss her being there at Toledo, I started to
- 33:43talk with. When you have a chance to talk
- 33:45to the thing, going to clean football coaching, and they had
- 33:48won the basketball coach, you know, just chilling out at Unity
- 33:52Toledo and see what they are able to do in command and how
- 33:55they commanded their athletes me.
- 33:57My number one coach. Call Tom's pet center.
- 33:58Number 2 is like like a sorry Mike let me know but I mean you
- 34:03know and then you go Gino and bob Knight all those guys right?
- 34:06And so I started I'm not a literary person verbal and
- 34:13auditory kind of learner as well as Visual and so I began to just
- 34:18have conversations if they allow me to just talk with great
- 34:22coaches. I told you that was still on the
- 34:24rise and he was trying to look at myself and I submit myself to
- 34:30do stitching years, do you know? But it can you track Jana
- 34:52Runway, right? The reading, unicorn orders and
- 34:55then come to light Toledo and have to order Lily every piece
- 35:01of equipment, you think up on a track meet and then negotiated
- 35:04this, all that deal and was like, you know, but but then
- 35:07also still trying to be the meat director for the conference
- 35:11Championship, right? And so, you know, you can get
- 35:15the deal with some good times in the coaches poll, like lost and
- 35:18how to kill State, and and connected to go down to Marion
- 35:43and Indianapolis and was able to really interact with my Holman
- 35:48and another great. God didn't realize that connect
- 35:52and all the while Here we go. Now, couple meet for Bravo's at
- 35:57Toledo, went down and meet at Family Marci and I will shut up
- 36:00RC as a great guy, he was coaching again or what?
- 36:05I'm going to say. I'm going to beat him just cuz
- 36:08I'm a coach just in a lot of my school work that most people
- 36:22never heard of history that I was suddenly without the blue.
- 36:26While I was down at Marion School named, Stiles to win the
- 36:32NCAA National Championship at the shop around the world.
- 36:36In 2016 work with a great staff here with great regret coaches,
- 36:47do Elsa, get people, are we talkin to Bailey?
- 36:49Banks is open door policy. We have great relationship by
- 36:53chance. And I think that's, that's
- 36:55really where the meat of Coachmen comes.
- 36:58Now, I need to be about relationship to be about,
- 37:00collaboration needs to be about understanding.
- 37:02And I think, if you go with those three things in there
- 37:04alone, and all the little Sports, can you get all this
- 37:08done more, but you're just finishing up this past season,
- 37:12was your 20th year coaching it? And maybe if you look at you
- 37:17said about your 13 things kind of change for you, so maybe
- 37:19seven. This is your seventh year,
- 37:21coaching in a, in a whole different if you will write.
- 37:26So let's talk about it. Cuz you said something real
- 37:28interesting about that major. And you've been using the word
- 37:32understanding, which we want to get into.
- 37:34We talked about the multiple intelligences and, you know,
- 37:38that the average person, I think you said has two, three or four.
- 37:41And then the Portico Geniuses you have 5 6 7.
- 37:44You talked about when I hear that.
- 37:47I think about when you're teaching people and you actually
- 37:50alerted to this as well. You have some people learn
- 37:52better visual. Some people learn better
- 37:55auditorily. So you know, is a is a teacher
- 37:59and as a coach, I sometimes get the show filmed the kids, some
- 38:03kids you need to show more film to some kids, you need to talk
- 38:06more. If they explain it more to them,
- 38:08some kids, you have to drill your the show, the drill, things
- 38:12like that are each each person. They're unique people and they
- 38:16learn uniquely. It made me think of that aspect.
- 38:19When you talked about these multiple intelligences, am I
- 38:24connected to you all day. I mean, you know, somebody's
- 38:28linguistic you kind of got to cut out your show on something
- 38:32they can read or when you got a, you know, with me, I'll talk to
- 38:35are very fast and a lot, so it doesn't like in cochem, mr.
- 38:39Let me be a big Achilles heel, so I have to try and talk with
- 38:43them and make it a collaboration to wear.
- 38:46It has become their idea and it may take a while to take care.
- 38:53But one of the things you just said there to explore, you
- 38:56talked about how you're a fast talker.
- 38:57I think a lot of it has to do from my relationship with you
- 39:02and knowledge of you is I think it has to do with your brain,
- 39:04can it goes a little bit, like a hundred miles per hour as well
- 39:07so it sometimes there's no speed boat for you from your brain to
- 39:11your house, you go. And I don't mean that negatively
- 39:14but like not just it just spills out sometimes they're a lot of
- 39:17things that come out. What responsibility is it?
- 39:20Do you think for the coach versus the athletes?
- 39:23So is it that these responsibilities to learn to
- 39:27listen to the hundred miles per hour?
- 39:28Or is there more responsibility on the codes to teach her to
- 39:33realize? Oh, this athlete are these this
- 39:36section of my athletes, I've got to slow down or backup my
- 39:40hundred miles per hour with visuals whose responsibility is
- 39:43it here? Liberty Bowl, but I think one
- 39:46because the coaches in a position of power and they have
- 39:51to approach to understanding and see if they still have to be,
- 39:55doesn't understand. No one was going on.
- 39:58So when I was in the younger part of my career, they will
- 40:01say, you know, as a young coach, you want everybody to be the
- 40:04love of sport like you do, but some people may be doing it for
- 40:06different reasons school as a part-time job and I'm still
- 40:11that, you know, you're going to sleep.
- 40:13You attract. After, you know, it was just a
- 40:14complete, this help you pay for school.
- 40:16That's the way I was beginning to have second part-time job
- 40:18with other men to get me to skate like that to me.
- 40:22So what is learning is understanding destructible that
- 40:28When the athlete doesn't have the same kind of passion and
- 40:32drivers, you do then you and tell Miss become the teacher and
- 40:35teach them why this is important for them to accomplish what they
- 40:40want a copy. So I relate if you go in there
- 40:42to look at my resume to say something like as you learn more
- 40:45about the sport of track and field Evans related to life, you
- 40:49will learn to appreciate both because there's a lot, you can
- 40:53learn to be an athlete and how you accomplish things in life.
- 40:56And I think in today's times we, we are, we're dealing with and
- 41:01maybe will tag this. What do, what do you know you
- 41:04got a generation. You know, someone says, just
- 41:08give it to him just a kid. Jordan's number 1z.
- 41:14Yeah. Because we want them to look a
- 41:17certain way, but we never top in the back of it.
- 41:19So, the Aztec the responsibility to ask think of accountability
- 41:23that aspect of learning is become devalued.
- 41:27More more and more. You know, I always joke now and
- 41:29tell him, I'm old enough to where I tell him the internet
- 41:32was traded in the second semester, my freshman year at
- 41:341996 right here, right? Yeah.
- 41:41It was actually, there's a fascinating though, there's
- 41:44plenty of fascinating books, but one of the first internet's that
- 41:47was right here to University Illinois.
- 41:49Right. In the basement, they created
- 41:51the internet right here in a little Champaign.
- 41:53Illinois, Steve Jobs book, The One That Got Elsa, did Benjamin
- 42:09Franklin and a couple others there, there there.
- 42:12Amazing, Albert, Einstein, but he also did one called
- 42:15innovators of the computer. So, he talks about how your
- 42:21computer was named Peter language, and then, of course,
- 42:23the internet and stuff like that.
- 42:24And it is And I'm terribly embarrassed that I cannot think
- 42:29of his name at Walter Isaacson, that's the author's name.
- 42:33So, all of his books are like 600 pages except for this one,
- 42:37that's in a minute. We'll listen to or maybe that's
- 42:40why I say you're not a reader. Yeah, but the audio books today,
- 42:43man, that I'm with every book is an audio form and things like
- 42:46that. So, sorry, and thank you Mike.
- 42:54Holman for, give me that love, you know, I cannot use my food
- 42:57stamps to get daylight in 15 minutes kind of creature.
- 43:03So engaged for 15 minutes to take a break, then come back and
- 43:08get you ever fix your mother's. And that correlates of what we
- 43:10doing for the track and field coaches, the other.
- 43:15So driven is so competitive. I think sometimes we think,
- 43:19like, with reading as the example, like I do, if I can't
- 43:22sit down and read for an hour or if I can't sit down and read the
- 43:25whole book, will that I'm failing?
- 43:26So then Just want to do it. And I don't mean that in a
- 43:29negative like, oh then I, you know, I don't try things that
- 43:31are hard for me, but I think we please forget and send it to
- 43:36that aspect of 15 minutes at a time.
- 43:38But we don't have to, you don't have to set the world record all
- 43:41at one time, you train the other day at a time.
- 43:43So same thing with reading, instead of trying to read the
- 43:45whole book or read for an hour, yes it down, put your 15 minute,
- 43:49timer to read for 15, put it down to go, do something else
- 43:51that, that style of learning that we sometimes, don't think
- 43:55about it that way. Because we're just so
- 43:56competitive work, which one to get on the runway and job.
- 43:59Are we going to get on the track and raise the whole 400?
- 44:02You know, we were so driven in that aspect that we forget about
- 44:05chunking things and learning that way.
- 44:08It really it is. I'm here and I think that's I
- 44:11might go to a different in my purse 10 years to now, in my, in
- 44:14my last 10 years, in terms of just like approach to the
- 44:18milepost, to coach my approach to this, for my approach, to
- 44:20learning, you know, adopting certain lingo, you know, so it
- 44:24so I sound, you know, professional with Micah Patriots
- 44:28and USA to Europe and USA to UFC c, c c, c u r, a c, a o n a i n
- 44:39go in and talk to speak with first-year athletes that wear
- 44:44their whole career in YouTube and in a lot of speed trainers.
- 44:50And and you know, a lot of these athletes that have become so
- 44:56specialized instead of just being very generalized.
- 45:00So when people come into my fall and training, Drake generalized
- 45:05what is very specific and turns up.
- 45:07I ain't going to train the body that I want to be able to
- 45:10eventually use as opposed to just I want to Tess Tess Tess I
- 45:13want to run you really fast on the jump, really far to the kind
- 45:17of body because we didn't understand the transfer brittle
- 45:20bone syndrome to. Now, the couch potato to just
- 45:24sitting with the arcade, your hands are starting in their
- 45:27feet. Yeah.
- 45:28Right into your skin problems, right?
- 45:32So I trained ankles, I told two joints, I trained the lower back
- 45:37yoga instructor Pacific and I maybe not typical name or where
- 45:46you're coming, you see, it, it gets them all nicely and still
- 45:55going current but still being limited old school player, see
- 46:03your education. Continues to get better.
- 46:05As you not only do coaches, add you mention level 1 and level 2
- 46:08and used to FCA has a great coaching.
- 46:11Education course you seem like I know you well enough to know
- 46:15this. This is true a guy that seeks
- 46:18out others that know more than you guys and gals that have done
- 46:21it for longer and I love that you've actually mentioned.
- 46:23You may have mentioned more other sport, coaches, football,
- 46:27and basketball. Then you have track.
- 46:29So it seems like you. Your ego is not so large that
- 46:33you don't speak at Council and mentorship from outside of our
- 46:36sport as well. What is changed for you.
- 46:40Not the athletes. We talked a little bit about the
- 46:42athletes have changed over the last 20 years.
- 46:43When you look back at your one of your coaching career two-year
- 46:4820, how have you changed or have you not, are you still doing the
- 46:54same things in the same mentality?
- 46:56Oh no, by no means. I think is going to last year,
- 47:15you know, if I have 20 athletes and Indian Point.
- 47:24I'm at a base plan, but I'm have 20 different individual, you
- 47:28know, specialize kind of different things within the day.
- 47:30It's all I understand the management of it in the
- 47:33management of the athlete. The name of the group that I
- 47:36learned from other coaches and they were dry cuz you taught me
- 47:38this as well as been in the watch other great coaches that
- 47:41were Championship or in the coaches and then I will be
- 47:45there. No automatic, my group, I went
- 47:47on a man has to work out, you know.
- 47:49Now we're going to take a lot of coaches.
- 47:51You up to today paperwork I need to have to do it.
- 47:56But I still enjoy your day is going.
- 48:05Well, hurry up and give me a few outfits for your birthday on the
- 48:11brightness on yours. Instead of going to practice.
- 48:14We're going to practice is we're going to be like for 5:00 6:00
- 48:17practices and we're working 70-80 hours, a practice or so to
- 48:22buy. They ain't what it used to be,
- 48:23you know? And so great to have a great
- 48:28facility, great things provided for us about the kids but you
- 48:33never can replace to bring what if you didn't have this.
- 48:37How do you do it? My boyfriend's level 1 class for
- 48:40the movie with Jim Potter, Larry judge, Dan Woolley Gary, Gary
- 48:45Winkler Minnesota, high school coach won a lot of cross-country
- 48:51championships. Yeah, that was my that was my
- 48:57very first little one plastic water high school was, what are
- 49:13we before all these great events that are out there, that can
- 49:18really help you out, but you ain't got the budget.
- 49:21How do you do it? How do you do it?
- 49:25Like I said, once again, you never let, so I need this the
- 49:28same. I never let the lack of
- 49:30coaching, the lack of knowledge lack of equipment or facilities.
- 49:33To prevent my master happens to a concert with a new gem credit.
- 49:39Same thing, you look at his story, you know how you ball the
- 49:42program is first class as you know, 20 years ago.
- 49:46So I meant to say, was I still do old school, probably will go
- 49:51through training yet, you know? And I think.
- 49:54Is always under written thing that we got to look at European
- 49:57style training and still trying to implement into the message I
- 50:00please. So instead of me sitting at just
- 50:04sitting at home all the time, you look at it you look at it
- 50:07and see how I can apply and really just comes with the
- 50:10lifestyle. So they didn't come from any buy
- 50:12it you have to create that culture.
- 50:14So now we're going to come out to work culture and if you hear
- 50:17it, but you didn't really know what it meant.
- 50:19So much culture in my training is completely different than any
- 50:23other person's culture, and you can come and watch my training
- 50:26now and I'll give you the workout watch.
- 50:30Every Coast is pretty good though, that.
- 50:33I mean, I'm not really doing anything Innovative, you know,
- 50:37if it's the same stuff, right? It's just I'm a put it over here
- 50:40and they put over there and they understand that Mia came from
- 50:43and how I want to do it because it's what we're planning for a
- 50:46purpose which I don't want to go, you know, I change the
- 50:49version instead of saying his goal setting, no purchase
- 50:51setting today What's your purpose in approaching the
- 50:56workout, has a lot of the same stuff that, you know, from
- 50:59another one of them to education and other things.
- 51:02I just said differently to where they're going to understand it.
- 51:05Know what's your intent? When you coming in to practice
- 51:08today? You know, from how you slept the
- 51:11night before you ate as you were covered in the day before and
- 51:14then what's your purpose in doing this right now?
- 51:17And explain the purpose and why we're doing it.
- 51:19So there are some tremendous Podcast in education for
- 51:28coaching the jumper in the Sprinter in the hurdler.
- 51:31And what have you write my purpose?
- 51:33Our purpose here on the connection podcast is this talk
- 51:36about the coach. So I'm going to turn what you
- 51:40just said. They are around about how you
- 51:42coach or athletes. I'm going to turn it to you or
- 51:44Anna. So, you talked about whatever
- 51:45goal setting, what is your purpose setting?
- 51:48What do you as you look at 20 years in men?
- 51:51I know that that seems like a long time, right?
- 51:53I mean, you talk about 20 years, like, that's a longtime coach,
- 51:56and you are the same age of roughly the same age.
- 52:00I think I got you by 2 years. I think.
- 52:03I'm two years older than you are the laws for you to disobey be
- 52:06okay. One day I'm Seventy-Six.
- 52:08Okay, all right. So but you know, at 7:40, you
- 52:11know, 344 year olds, you know, there still we have a long
- 52:15runway in front of us we are going to buy me to close to
- 52:18retiring and maybe with the financial scope of life.
- 52:22We never retire or maybe. I don't know, I hope you do.
- 52:25I don't think I'll ever be able to retire cuz I was working.
- 52:27So what is as you look at 20 years behind you and you got at
- 52:33least 20 years in front of you. What for you coach?
- 52:37What is your purpose goals? What is your goal?
- 52:40Setting your purpose setting for career development for coaching
- 52:46Yo, 2004 conversation with a guy named Raymond Brewer, a friend
- 52:53of mine. Now we were two drivers and in
- 52:55college because he went in that state.
- 53:01And I know it took me two weeks to talk to him and I said yeah,
- 53:16I think that might, my profession was really chosen for
- 53:22me by God's. I said okay well I'm up and I'm
- 53:24not a minister by no means rich guy and I just said, you know
- 53:28God you know, imma do this for you.
- 53:30You know. The next what?
- 53:3519 or 16 years? A lot of ups and downs.
- 53:40Lot about. A lot of the inside of that.
- 53:42Give a shout out to my pastor, Pastor, Steven furtick Elevation
- 53:47Church, do you know, and, you know, tell me where the city
- 53:52during this game, dammit can even do my joint.
- 53:55A detective acts, the guy from go to the six months, I had to
- 53:58go home and look in the dresser Uncle who I was named after.
- 54:01Dementia, you know, and so cuz it's going to that point in time
- 54:06in a 19 years into into my career, you know, there's a lot
- 54:12of stuff with families, you missed you the story about
- 54:14coaches, are they feel like they were greatly missed a lot in the
- 54:18Family Lights like that. That was once I turned 20 hours
- 54:24is, ain't you at the world? 30 years old, you know, still
- 54:28pretty fit. I'm like, yeah, I know this
- 54:30stuff now soon as you hit 40, it's like you watching Marley
- 54:34and Me and Grandma voice. The wind is blowing.
- 54:42I got done over here we looked at 40 or older like oh my
- 54:51goodness foot in the grave at 40 years old and now we're 40 or
- 54:58like a life's just beginning. I'm finally understand a little
- 55:01bit. Play everything that you
- 55:02everything that you know, you kind of get it and be like, oh
- 55:09my God, I can't believe my cousin you going to be here for
- 55:28you. You look up the name success.
- 55:31You know what? You know, and you always trying
- 55:38to serve the boss. So I'm trying to make sure it
- 55:42when I'm trying to get it to him.
- 55:46And he said to tell me because I don't like they're running slow
- 56:00or whatever it's called. They just checking out.
- 56:04What's up brother? How you doing?
- 56:05Good man and I think that I'm right in rolling in today.
- 56:23But, you know, right? But the level of understand how
- 56:42do you turn about the jumps, but didn't really embrace all that.
- 56:46Whole new system speed training, and rest and everything.
- 56:49Even this past summer, you know, got to talk to you, one of the
- 56:53guys I'd like to call and double-check.
- 56:54Let you know what I mean? Like I told you know I got 15
- 57:00minutes by myself and I was like the person like that is
- 57:11Institute, 10 seconds and I'm walking away like that just
- 57:16happened a bit, you know, I see you always learning if you know,
- 57:25when you get here from Blake guys, on a church where I can I
- 57:29go to conventional loan at least one thing.
- 57:32Curtis Robert. He's out of Chapel Hill, right?
- 57:35In front of me, just at certain times, I did not realize I was
- 57:48being mentored. I didn't realize that.
- 57:50I don't receive it right? So like we were at the Armory
- 57:53one time I was sitting with Curtis.
- 57:55I'm sitting at the bar because you know you know Alexis Jordan
- 58:09going to be like chilling right now.
- 58:12Just kind of watching it right now to take advantage of me
- 58:22right now in the jungle. How to take advantage of it.
- 58:33So what do you mean by that? What you said that was an aha
- 58:35moment for Jimmy State and go back and look at all the jobs at
- 58:45work really wasn't just one particular job is takes up all
- 58:48the evening jobs and looking at the difference between these in
- 58:50and just and opportunities were different.
- 58:54So just miss me as much as I thought.
- 59:00I actually had the balls to tell me that I realize you do.
- 59:02This is going to be weird when I tell you this.
- 59:04I actually listened with my mouth but you weird cuz I was
- 59:07sending my Mother Teresa with a mouthy with a black ears and
- 59:12throat right out of my system and I want liners.
- 59:24Right? So but I I adopt a little bit
- 59:29now that we're eating you hear me now Paul's in a little bit
- 59:31now. Still do something may seem like
- 59:33I'm not at all. I'm pulling a lot more now than
- 59:37I was 10 years ago, and I'm pausing because like I said,
- 59:41it's not a challenge. He always had to have the kind
- 59:44of doing this anyway, breathe like long and me 23, like,
- 59:51right. And then the ABS light is the
- 59:56truth. And I ran in there and act like
- 1:00:29Any kind of old man stereotype. You can think of it was him,
- 1:00:35Grumpier Old Men to lift your butt guy from the dare.
- 1:00:42You do you have to be to drop them in at 2?
- 1:00:45So see those two at the same time, right?
- 1:00:47And you know but I know people are aggravated.
- 1:00:56What? I take my breath, you said I see
- 1:00:58him and he said I do it for a reason so that if I take a
- 1:01:03breath and give me a moment to think about what I'm about to
- 1:01:07say. And make sure that what I say
- 1:01:09comes out correctly, like rain in the moment still young and
- 1:01:12his brother. Oh yeah.
- 1:01:13But but but that's one of the things that I took with me that
- 1:01:18I've taken throughout my career still working on it, still
- 1:01:22working on it and it's improving about it and some people always
- 1:01:24want to get it like this unless they want it right now.
- 1:01:27I want it right now. Go to Lake.
- 1:01:29Well, are you better than you used to be at it right into a
- 1:01:34change your approach, right? Continue the Viewpoint, not one
- 1:01:37of the other one line. As I say, if your head is down
- 1:01:40in your wording, you change how you look at the milk in the
- 1:01:44glass, and I was going to put that in the sense of seeing, if
- 1:01:48your head is down, the glass always looks half empty.
- 1:01:51But if you lift your head up, and look around you and
- 1:01:55realizing change your view point, the glasses actually
- 1:01:57have. So, in the mister grinding, my
- 1:02:01first channel, 12 to 13, 14 years.
- 1:02:04Yo, I didn't look up. The best, I never was really any
- 1:02:21line on coaching style. I never was really don't
- 1:02:24understand what is the full package so that when you have to
- 1:02:28get a I was going to buy some people.
- 1:02:30How's it going to be? So now we're happy to call me up
- 1:02:34and I'll talk to him. I'm seeing a lot of saying
- 1:02:36stuff, repetitive me now you start understanding.
- 1:02:38This is the meat and it bubbles eventually.
- 1:02:42Now you start saying oh and 40 is what I said to go to the 23,
- 1:02:47a much different. Now, the conversation with the
- 1:02:50athlete, a much different is that if they still do it, if I
- 1:02:54wasn't going to work to go do it.
- 1:02:55Don't always work. I love that example of Coach
- 1:02:59sitting back and taking that deep breath.
- 1:03:01I recently read an article about answering questions, more
- 1:03:06empathetically being more empathetic, right.
- 1:03:17Sometimes I'm a little bit more too much on the direct and
- 1:03:20business and get it done type of side.
- 1:03:22And this article was talking about the research of pausing
- 1:03:26for a few seconds before he hasn't even.
- 1:03:28Are you you know, the answer, even though, you know, possibly
- 1:03:31how you're going to answer the question or the situation and
- 1:03:35the examples that this article gave was talks from Steve Jobs
- 1:03:40and I believe he'll on must was the other one and the Steve Jobs
- 1:03:44one really sticks out. I know Steve Jobs and Bill
- 1:03:47Gates, that's what it was. And where someone in the
- 1:03:53audience asked? Bill a question about, you know,
- 1:03:57like what do you do? Like he was kind of confronting
- 1:03:59Bill. Like you just wasted a lot of
- 1:04:00time where you made mistakes with this Microsoft system,
- 1:04:03whatever, and bill passed. You the answer, you know.
- 1:04:08He knew all the all the engineers is Microsoft.
- 1:04:11We've been working on this and thinks that you, he knew it.
- 1:04:13I mean, no one knows it better than Bill freaking Gates, Right?
- 1:04:15But he popped and was able to give a much more empathetic
- 1:04:19answer to help that guy understand why can't?
- 1:04:23We certainly make mistakes. Like that's like if you want
- 1:04:26Perfection, that's not. There is nothing in it.
- 1:04:28Perfection, right? But I really took the hard about
- 1:04:31that. That pause before you answer
- 1:04:35questions. I I sometimes it for myself, I
- 1:04:37have to slow down to help other people understand what I'm
- 1:04:40trying to convey. Yeah.
- 1:04:43Right. That's a lot of them, you know,
- 1:04:53did you eat? Did you feel like they had a
- 1:04:54good meeting or do you like, you had a good meeting or did?
- 1:04:57They feel like they had a good meeting a while.
- 1:04:59What a great question to ask yourself, right?
- 1:05:01That's really good. Yeah, I was the meeting good
- 1:05:03because I thought it was good. I got all my views out or did
- 1:05:07the person I'm trying to help improve my athlete, that they
- 1:05:10have a good movie. That's, that's a really good
- 1:05:12question. If you touch done mentors, how
- 1:05:16is the role of mentors change for you as well?
- 1:05:19You got some amazing people in your life inside of track.
- 1:05:22Family outside of track with other sport.
- 1:05:25How is the role of mentors? Changed over the past 20 years,
- 1:05:30for you gotten very blessed. You know, this is one of those
- 1:05:36when I was away for six months and I was doing some modeling
- 1:05:40jobs, he's trying to be around the family and stuff and my
- 1:05:49mentor. I mean, I'll talk to you in the
- 1:05:53last four or five Olympic coaches in the last 10 years.
- 1:05:58Like he's not just like, oh, I need a just want to Touch the
- 1:06:04Hem of your garment called and talked to him and his people in
- 1:06:10and and, you know, I was dying because I was able to just stay
- 1:06:14here before you were supposed to, like, I'm actually Center
- 1:06:18have a conversation with you and really listening to him on the
- 1:06:25phone and and, and just people Yeah I know.
- 1:06:29And you know what you're saying, a lot about you over here and
- 1:06:32we're at a small school and you're like damn these people
- 1:06:36are world-class would like to still people are using the other
- 1:06:42day in class. I said we don't we don't we do
- 1:06:45value. Do the humanistic value of a I'm
- 1:06:49living. Right?
- 1:06:50So where humans and what I'm talking about, certain events
- 1:06:53down, in pandemic opportunity, you know, to be able to talk
- 1:06:59with some to some other coaches and I'll just feel like the
- 1:07:04opportunity to trade about to go to talk with each other and it
- 1:07:08was, it was great. And then of course it changed.
- 1:07:10I think a more business-oriented and everything else and I'll
- 1:07:14leave it there. But the organic organic and some
- 1:07:19coaching them is is is not left and it's still being able to
- 1:07:22speak with people who eat least, eat organically.
- 1:07:25And then on top of you start looking at while certain people,
- 1:07:29Welcome to the scriptures on on, on on your Facebook post and
- 1:07:33it's like trying to show up late and so I'm not saying that you
- 1:07:42have to be a Christian but what I'm saying is that if you don't
- 1:07:45have some kind of solid foundation then you're going to
- 1:07:49not know how to deal with her. You're not going to know how to
- 1:07:51accomplish problem. So that's what we do is do you
- 1:07:56know, I work out since the map but the gear is the road and
- 1:08:00then you take the gloss and I like it don't take away the
- 1:08:02bones as you hoped throughout the year.
- 1:08:04By the way, you take away a couple bonuses and you can't
- 1:08:08Park Golf and you do it again. But then you get to a point
- 1:08:12where it just makes it look like you.
- 1:08:14But after you won a championship coaching with some coaches,
- 1:08:20don't even get one or two trying to get 110, right and Champion,
- 1:08:27do that. How do you do it again?
- 1:08:30This is where it starts getting pressure to you.
- 1:08:33How do you do it again? Do you do it with the with the
- 1:08:36power side to do with them during side to do its balance?
- 1:08:39Can you look up the Mexican national team transferred and
- 1:08:44some interest in learning and listening to them processing
- 1:08:50information in coming back, texting him again you know or
- 1:08:55talk to him again or reading their post directly talking to
- 1:09:00the person from just following him in order to see what the old
- 1:09:07saying, we learned growing up to be a good leader, you have to
- 1:09:09learn to be a good, what each other, they would never run
- 1:09:17against each other. Now, you seen the trend over the
- 1:09:20last five, to seven years. You like, no, it's run.
- 1:09:23You want to put on a good show for everybody because you're
- 1:09:27going to make me step my game. It.
- 1:09:29So now you even seen it and just do not mean housewife is a
- 1:09:33graduate every year so we can all have it, cut the budget or
- 1:09:36whatever. So I don't have the part where
- 1:09:39you thought I had to come to say, call you up.
- 1:09:40It's us and respect money. You got disaster here, they need
- 1:09:45opportunity. So if ice versus hey Terry, do
- 1:09:49it. Then it is that we don't have a
- 1:09:50major, I know you will because now your name is on that.
- 1:09:54So now you start valuing your name, you started on your in
- 1:09:57your product so it died on you and your people calling you up.
- 1:10:01How are you with the front of your colleagues in the industry?
- 1:10:03Are you? Well respected or not?
- 1:10:06You know what my overall purpose?
- 1:10:08Now in coaching is it's involved in a profession.
- 1:10:12What allows me to help out as many people as I can?
- 1:10:15And that's a great point. I got to give a shout out.
- 1:10:18I just saw this recently with Signing Day the other day and
- 1:10:23athlete from publicly sick. So I put it on my Twitter as
- 1:10:27well, just so soon. With the selfless leadership.
- 1:10:30This coach show to Alex heacock the head coach of William and
- 1:10:34Mary which of course has been in the news or bad things and have
- 1:10:37a good things. They've reversed course and
- 1:10:39they're going to keep their Sports which is the right thing
- 1:10:41to do. I specifically they're going to
- 1:10:43keep their men's indoor outdoor track program which is
- 1:10:45absolutely the right thing to do.
- 1:10:47Now we've got to work on Clemson and some of the other guys that
- 1:10:50are doing this crap Alex had an athlete transfer from William
- 1:10:55and Mary to, I believe you in seat until UNC put out the the
- 1:10:59Tweet about, you know, such a fleet, you know, signed with us
- 1:11:03and whatnot. Alex retweeted that and said
- 1:11:07just sang the Praises of that kids at.
- 1:11:10Hey, this is Young. I wish this kid the best of
- 1:11:12luck, he's going to do great. I'm glad you landed at you and
- 1:11:14see what everybody gotta and I was so impressed with that
- 1:11:18leadership cuz even if that's obviously who Alex is cuz you
- 1:11:22showed it but even if that was him he didn't have to publicly
- 1:11:26state that he didn't have to. For whatever reason is kids
- 1:11:30transfer, there's a million reasons a kid can and should
- 1:11:33possibly transfer schools, but Alex didn't have to publicly get
- 1:11:39out there and say, hey, we lost the kid.
- 1:11:40This is transferring, and I wish him the best of luck in the
- 1:11:44world. What a great kid.
- 1:11:46That was such a amazing and I want to see made a love like to
- 1:11:56meet up with you do. When a man sometimes it's not
- 1:12:04the coach and it's not. The school is not fit into my
- 1:12:10past but a lot of time a human beings.
- 1:12:15First, I looked at it with that way I look at it as a dadlands
- 1:12:19now is a father of little kids. One day, they're going to be in
- 1:12:24college and what if their athletes are not.
- 1:12:25But I look at like what Alex did they are and I go Man, that's
- 1:12:30the type of person I want my children to be around cuz that
- 1:12:34that guy Alex is going to do what's right for my kid even
- 1:12:37when it's a detriment to himself, he losing.
- 1:12:40That kid was a detriment to his program, but he seems like he
- 1:12:44did the right thing to help that kid be successful for the
- 1:12:48future. And I said into me, and I know
- 1:12:51it is, I were talking about Alex here because of the recent
- 1:12:53tweet, but, you know, I talked to coaches is, all I do is, I
- 1:12:56talked to Coach has all day right at the greatest job in the
- 1:12:58world. And there's so many examples of
- 1:13:00that. That's what I love about our
- 1:13:02Sport. And our people who choose to be
- 1:13:04inside of our sport, as we start to wrap up.
- 1:13:08What are the words that you said consistently throughout today?
- 1:13:11And I want to make sure we touch down what it meant to you.
- 1:13:14You said the word understanding quite often talked to me about
- 1:13:19that, that there must be some special there.
- 1:13:22Something special about that works.
- 1:13:23He talks about understanding and not in just in the.
- 1:13:25In the term of what the definition of understanding is
- 1:13:27but maybe it goes. Where's your pedagogy and how
- 1:13:30you teach or how you live. Talk to me about what
- 1:13:32understanding means to you. Get all of that all in one when
- 1:13:38when I kind of start on the Journey of Purpose Driven Life
- 1:13:43and I'll be able to book. Those are not about us like that
- 1:13:46but I'm trying to understand really what purpose is.
- 1:13:49One of the ways that I trying to post the day is trying to
- 1:13:56understand, you know what, the person is going through and gone
- 1:14:01through will go through what I've gone through will go
- 1:14:06through in that nature and trying address the situation and
- 1:14:11another shutout even almost like my homie.
- 1:14:13He was on the rear coaches where are you allowed to lift weights,
- 1:14:18you got work out and got to work out to where he had.
- 1:14:23C, a r. S going through a struggle or
- 1:14:25not just the day off, what I mean, like rest.
- 1:14:27And so, like we will do anything and quote, the lie that came
- 1:14:31from a lot of the studies. He did, you know, him and man.
- 1:14:34And so, he's really science-oriented.
- 1:14:38So instead of me going to go take a Kinesiology class and it
- 1:14:45was, it was, it was daily. You know, how do you know,
- 1:14:50probably, but I'm a question and I think about the chimney, they
- 1:15:06understand how it's not too serious, you know, she can a day
- 1:15:09away. It's really am trying to learn
- 1:15:10in the more, I am so happy that I don't get me wrong.
- 1:15:14I also just questions, but, but I think just, if I can
- 1:15:20understand more as opposed to I can understand more some of this
- 1:15:28doesn't come for me and you know what he says and somebody to
- 1:15:32walk around and do a lot of stuff and putting it into
- 1:15:36practice, they don't, you know. So people and using multiple
- 1:15:42leave it podcast different varieties and capillaries.
- 1:15:48In this time. In that time, about time you
- 1:15:50finish, you have no idea they just said that's why I can't
- 1:15:53like Google. And so he's an amazing teacher
- 1:16:14drifted in the coach in a little bit.
- 1:16:26And also let you know that whatever, right?
- 1:16:38I've been around some really good people.
- 1:16:43That really give me a lot of stuff to sit through and it took
- 1:16:46me that long to really just Brew it to really try and put a
- 1:16:51product out there. So when people start saying like
- 1:16:53what's your training Pulaski and what's your training this and
- 1:16:56whatever what's funny is, there isn't A little bit of this, a
- 1:17:01little bit of that, it's like making a suit and that's really
- 1:17:05what it is. You know, we're making soup and
- 1:17:08everybody likes to write. My name is soothing but
- 1:17:14everybody I think as to get comfortable being uncomfortable
- 1:17:16and stepping out of the box and relearning, and yourself in
- 1:17:25humility, even as a coach, you know, you can't just approached
- 1:17:29a first-year student by saying, right, because as soon as they
- 1:17:38are freshman, you just given them continuously the mentality
- 1:17:42of a freshman, and that's your fault.
- 1:17:45I just called him a first-year student.
- 1:17:46I used to say your friends, as long as you let somebody call
- 1:17:49you a question. Now I'm going to tell him I'm in
- 1:17:55class, so I understand a little bit more.
- 1:17:56What is alright? Give me rights civil rights.
- 1:18:00Women's rights disability. Rights of LGBT cue the Aldi's in
- 1:18:04the things, that's the trend in. So if you're just in your sport
- 1:18:07only and only looking up games that that apply to your support,
- 1:18:13only your boxing yourself. What if you have, what if you
- 1:18:18ask for, lgbtq Ashley, how do you address them?
- 1:18:21What did you, how do you deal with a with a athlete that came
- 1:18:26from associate? Not a background that you have
- 1:18:28never been a part of. How do you adapt to them about
- 1:18:33as many people as possible as many people as possible?
- 1:18:36After being exposed to as many people as possible, different
- 1:18:40outlooks, different backgrounds, right?
- 1:18:43And have those conversations. Just a simple conversation and
- 1:18:48then buy you having a conversation with you.
- 1:18:50Now not devalue, the person you've actually up with the
- 1:18:54person and sometimes if you just look, the human being they can
- 1:18:58do amazing things at 1 to 3 with 1 through 4.
- 1:19:03In the long. Jump that, yeah, we were like
- 1:19:05two, two, four, six eight employment.
- 1:19:08Little bit right. There was like four in the
- 1:19:15triple. Jump on the men's side, right,
- 1:19:19get it right then and there sometimes training ain't got
- 1:19:24nothing to do with it. Sometimes it don't.
- 1:19:25Sometimes it's about understanding when I look at you
- 1:19:29in your eyes and make a statement.
- 1:19:32That's one statement just coach them from there.
- 1:19:36They need to know what there was wasps build their experiences
- 1:19:40and every great coach has those moments because you see Em Down
- 1:19:44Road in the. Pat Summitt to Geno to Mike
- 1:19:47racette skis through to a Carol to a Curtis ride or Jeremy Corea
- 1:19:52whatever we're continually coaching, but we also need to be
- 1:19:56able to receive as well. Definition about being in a
- 1:20:02posture of understanding and not always in a posture of, I know
- 1:20:06it. You know what, I look at you
- 1:20:08mention all of the coaches with the carols and Curtis and mouse,
- 1:20:11and flow of the guys and gals that I've seen continually be
- 1:20:16successful over Generations, over decades.
- 1:20:19I should say, they're the ones that are always even though they
- 1:20:22have a system they're always learning like okay, we learn new
- 1:20:25things about the body on a daily basis.
- 1:20:28So okay, what do we put into place?
- 1:20:30How do I keep tweaking my sis? Done with the new things, have
- 1:20:33you learned and they realized that the subject that they're
- 1:20:36working with the athletes, they're changing the athlete
- 1:20:39that you have today. That eighteen-year-old you have
- 1:20:41is it in 2020 is not the same 18 year old to learn that in and
- 1:20:48how do you change your teaching or tweet your changed, your
- 1:20:50teaching? I should say two words that new
- 1:20:53generation been going to let it happen.
- 1:20:57You know? Like you got to understand it,
- 1:21:00you got to know where you want to be.
- 1:21:01And, and you got to know how to pick on the fly out at 3
- 1:21:10workout. Somebody at 3, the one I wrote
- 1:21:13and the two of them. Think about when somebody brings
- 1:21:16situation has been seasoned absolute.
- 1:21:32In our time today, looking at your career development and more
- 1:21:35importantly, your personal development, how you continue to
- 1:21:39learn how to have them into her. Take advantage of that means or
- 1:21:45how to be available for that mentor and learn as well as the
- 1:21:49Pinnacle of x's and o's coaching you.
- 1:21:51You continue to develop and continue to get better.
- 1:21:53I think Tiffany is really lucky to have you and that's another
- 1:21:57great programs. That's what that's saying
- 1:21:58something big, right? I mean, they think I had great
- 1:22:00coaches and have a great day, it's a great place.
- 1:22:07And it really is to drool letting you know, I work at only
- 1:22:13grown weary Bob and I mean, yes, he doesn't make sense but we
- 1:22:15have a lot of goals. A lot of things you want a copy.
- 1:22:17So you know, when you know more about the relationships about
- 1:22:22this about the family, you know, yeah, we're about the
- 1:22:24relationships with people that want to come and kind of look at
- 1:22:28the school and then see what we're doing.
- 1:22:29And how is your Saturday in shipping?
- 1:22:31How cold is kind of work in there?
- 1:22:32Wouldn't want to know that we're all different.
- 1:22:34And, and I think it allows us to be at address to large numbers
- 1:22:39that we have with the diverse population that we have.
- 1:22:42And I think, you know, me and we can offer people and do some
- 1:22:49classes and work continued growing in the closet, where we
- 1:22:51will build it, and I miss them with that.
- 1:22:53Damn it. I just said we were recruiting
- 1:22:54in the midst of a time. Do you know?
- 1:22:57We, we, we sure about the person that's the best, I can every
- 1:23:02care about the person and we're going to teach you your sport.
- 1:23:05You may not have a national qualifying marks your first year
- 1:23:10but I haven't been for years but you're going to get better.
- 1:23:13I'm going to get better, not only as an after you get better
- 1:23:16as a person. Let's let's I can't stay the
- 1:23:21importance of that, right? I mean, we're not all going to
- 1:23:23be Olympians and all Americans, but we if we're in college we
- 1:23:27should all be getting better as a person and academically
- 1:23:30sweetheart in, that degree in Earnest man.
- 1:23:32I'm just so thankful. I'm thankful for our
- 1:23:34relationship, personally, but I'm just thankful that you would
- 1:23:37join us here today on the headaches connections podcast.
- 1:23:39I had a great time learning about your career and really
- 1:23:42chopping up about coaching mentality and how coaching is of
- 1:23:46all for you. Just so, so thankful for you,
- 1:23:48man, so much that we don't talk about the other parts of
- 1:23:58coaching us, you know. And so I think what you're doing
- 1:24:02is a great thing. Yeah.
- 1:24:03I knew you would be doing it to watch you from afar and, you
- 1:24:07know, known you for a long time. And I really wasn't like, I mean
- 1:24:12interview by investigator reporters more, like, I'm
- 1:24:14getting them work, like you said, what type of that, we're
- 1:24:16friends and everything. So, You got a place over here to
- 1:24:19the university, do you come on over here and just chop it up
- 1:24:24and she snaps at a high level in.
- 1:24:26And she said, people just really having fun in the sport in the
- 1:24:29midst of a pandemic and we're doing everything that we both
- 1:24:31keep masisi standpoint pressing, all the guidelines sanitizing,
- 1:24:35everything. That's something.
- 1:24:36New add-on beside the right to work out.
- 1:24:38Taking Cameron to practice Fastenal, small group.
- 1:24:41So what do you supposed to be doing all that you'll be.
- 1:24:44You'll be safe too, you know, when and I think you know we'd
- 1:24:48like to have and I always will but the one Little Ghetto Boy
- 1:24:51out there. I think since the beginning of
- 1:24:53sports tracker. Because without a gate smart men
- 1:24:58stole but we can bring in numbers that can help populate
- 1:25:03the schools in a lot in a, in a million different ways to meet
- 1:25:07me at 19 bench that we can recruit for.
- 1:25:09So, you know, schools that are that are having problems with
- 1:25:13with much as I like the enemy. You know, we're, we're we're
- 1:25:16pushing ahead when making a Chelsea Central And I think
- 1:25:19about temperature about Jimmy going to be in the morning get
- 1:25:22off, can you get a good education and then decide to get
- 1:25:25some rings and we going to win if you don't want to, that's a
- 1:25:31great way to end a man. Thank you again, so much for
- 1:25:33being here. You know, your time and
- 1:25:35attention is the most valuable thing you can give me.
- 1:25:37So I do appreciate your time today.
