SPEAKER_00: Welcome to the Create Love, Create Freedom Podcast.
0:06
SPEAKER_00: This podcast explores feminine psychology, embodiment, attachment, sovereignty, archetypes, and conscious womanhood in a post-spectacle world.
0:20
SPEAKER_00: My name is Alison Fisher, and my work centers on internal authority and relational clarity across the seasons of a woman's life.
0:32
SPEAKER_00: On today's episode, we are going to be discussing Demeter Beyond Motherhood.
0:42
SPEAKER_00: There are certain feminine archetypes that women tend to embrace immediately the maiden, the lover, the mystic, the queen, the warrior.
0:53
SPEAKER_00: These archetypes feel expansive, powerful, liberating.
0:59
SPEAKER_00: And then there are archetypes that many women quietly resist.
1:04
SPEAKER_00: Demeter is often one of them.
1:06
SPEAKER_00: For years, I did not reject Demeter, but I also did not feel particularly drawn to her.
1:14
SPEAKER_00: Whenever I encountered discussions about Demeter, the conversation almost always revolved around motherhood.
1:25
SPEAKER_00: Motherhood, parenting, nurturing children.
1:30
SPEAKER_00: And as a woman who does not have children and may never have children, I often found myself wondering what exactly this archetype had to offer me.
1:41
SPEAKER_00: Surely there must be more.
1:43
SPEAKER_00: Surely one of the oldest and most important goddesses in the ancient world could not be reduced to a single role.
1:52
SPEAKER_00: And the more I studied her, the more I realized that my instinct was correct.
1:57
SPEAKER_00: Demeter is not simply the archetype of motherhood.
2:01
SPEAKER_00: Demeter is the archetype of stewardship.
2:05
SPEAKER_00: She is the keeper of what sustains life.
2:09
SPEAKER_00: She governs civilization, provision, responsibility, and harvest, success and achievement.
2:19
SPEAKER_00: She is the woman of stewardship, stewardship of resources, stewardship of communities, and stewardship of the future.
2:31
SPEAKER_00: In many ways, Demeter is not merely the mother.
2:35
SPEAKER_00: She is the woman who understands that life itself requires tending, that everything valuable must eventually be cultivated, nourished, protected, and sustained.
2:48
SPEAKER_00: And suddenly, Demeter becomes relevant to far more women than we have been led to believe.
2:55
SPEAKER_00: Because perhaps your stewardship is not expressed through children.
3:00
SPEAKER_00: Perhaps it is expressed through a business, a body, a relationship, a creative work, a community, a family legacy, a vision for the future.
3:13
SPEAKER_00: Perhaps Demeter arrives not when a woman becomes a mother, but when she becomes responsible for something larger than herself.
3:23
SPEAKER_00: I have been thinking about this archetype quite a bit lately, partly because I have spent many years exploring feminine archetypes such as Persephone, Hecate, Lilith, Hathor, Magdalene, Athena, and Hera.
3:40
SPEAKER_00: But also because I have reached a stage of life where a different question is emerging, not who am I becoming, but what am I being asked to steward?
3:52
SPEAKER_00: What has been entrusted to my care?
3:55
SPEAKER_00: What am I cultivating?
3:57
SPEAKER_00: What am I responsible for protecting?
4:00
SPEAKER_00: And perhaps that is where Demeter truly lives, not motherhood alone, although Demeter's expression of motherhood is absolutely beautiful, but also in the sacred responsibility of tending what matters.
4:18
SPEAKER_00: So today I want to explore Demeter beyond motherhood.
4:23
SPEAKER_00: I want to explore her as one of the most powerful and perhaps most misunderstood archetypes available to women.
4:31
SPEAKER_00: Not because motherhood isn't important or to diminish women who are mothers, but because I suspect that many of us have been carrying her energy along without all along, I should say, without realizing it.
4:50
SPEAKER_00: And perhaps it is time to meet her again.
4:55
SPEAKER_00: Let's begin.
4:58
SPEAKER_00: First we're going to discuss who Demeter really is, beyond the mother.
5:04
SPEAKER_00: One of the most fascinating things about archetypes is that they often become simplified over time.
5:11
SPEAKER_00: Entire dimensions of the wisdom get lost.
5:15
SPEAKER_00: A complex goddess has been stripped down to a stereotype.
5:19
SPEAKER_00: Profound symbol has been stripped down to a role.
5:23
SPEAKER_00: And I think that's exactly what happened with Demeter.
5:26
SPEAKER_00: When most people hear her name, they immediately think the mother, the grieving mother, the nurturing mother, the mother searching for Persephone.
5:38
SPEAKER_00: And while that story is certainly important, it is not the only aspect of Demeter, and it is only one piece of who Demeter truly is.
5:50
SPEAKER_00: Because Demeter was never simply just a mother.
5:55
SPEAKER_00: She was one of the most powerful goddesses in the Greek world.
5:59
SPEAKER_00: She was the goddess of grain, architecture, agriculture, harvest, fertility of the land, cycles of growth and renewal, systems that allowed entire civilizations to survive.
6:17
SPEAKER_00: This distinction matters because Demeter was not responsible for one child.
6:22
SPEAKER_00: She was responsible for sustaining life itself.
6:26
SPEAKER_00: Without Demeter, crops failed.
6:30
SPEAKER_00: Without Demeter, communities starved.
6:33
SPEAKER_00: Without Demeter, civilizations became unstable.
6:38
SPEAKER_00: In many ways, she represented the invisible labor that makes all visible life possible.
6:46
SPEAKER_00: And I think this is where we begin to understand her more clearly.
6:50
SPEAKER_00: Now Demeter is not fundamentally the archetype of motherhood, that is one aspect of who she is.
6:58
SPEAKER_00: She is the archetype of civilization.
7:01
SPEAKER_00: She is the woman who understands that nothing valuable simply appears.
7:07
SPEAKER_00: Everything must be grown, everything must be tended, everything must be nourished over time.
7:13
SPEAKER_00: And unlike some archetypes that focus on vision or inspiration, Demeter is deeply connected to reality.
7:22
SPEAKER_00: She understands seasons, she understands patience.
7:26
SPEAKER_00: She understands that growth unfolds according to natural rhythms, not personal timelines, not cultural expectations, and not urgency.
7:38
SPEAKER_00: Nature's timelines.
7:41
SPEAKER_00: There is something profoundly mature about this perspective, in my opinion.
7:46
SPEAKER_00: The maiden often asks, What do I want?
7:50
SPEAKER_00: The lover often asks, What do I desire?
7:54
SPEAKER_00: The warrior or the huntress feminine archetype often asks, What must I conquer?
8:00
SPEAKER_00: But Demeter asks a different question.
8:04
SPEAKER_00: She asks, What must be cultivated?
8:07
SPEAKER_00: And that question changes everything.
8:10
SPEAKER_00: Because civilization requires a completely different relationship with life.
8:16
SPEAKER_00: Cultivation is not glamorous, it is repetitive, consistent, patient, often invisible.
8:25
SPEAKER_00: You plant seeds long before anyone sees a harvest.
8:29
SPEAKER_00: You water fields before there is evidence of growth.
8:33
SPEAKER_00: You care for what is becoming long before it becomes visible.
8:38
SPEAKER_00: And I suspect many women underestimate how much Demeter energy they already embody.
8:45
SPEAKER_00: If you have ever built a business over years rather than months, you have touched Demeter.
8:52
SPEAKER_00: If you have ever cared for an aging parent, you have touched Demeter.
8:57
SPEAKER_00: If you have ever tended to your own healing through seasons of grief, recovery, and transformation, you have touched Demeter.
9:07
SPEAKER_00: If you have ever committed yourself to a long term vision that required patience and devotion, you have touched Demeter.
9:16
SPEAKER_00: And of course, if you have mothered children, you have touched Demeter.
9:22
SPEAKER_00: This is not the energy of instant gratification.
9:27
SPEAKER_00: Even in her role as mother, there is no instant gratification.
9:32
SPEAKER_00: It is tending to children day in, day out for years, just as another woman tends to her business day in and day out for years.
9:47
SPEAKER_00: As I said, this is not the energy of instant gratification.
9:53
SPEAKER_00: This is the energy of stewardship.
9:57
SPEAKER_00: And perhaps that is why Demeter often becomes more visible in midlife.
10:03
SPEAKER_00: Because youth tends to celebrate beginnings.
10:07
SPEAKER_00: Midlife often teaches us the importance of maintenance, of preservation, of tending, and of sustaining.
10:17
SPEAKER_00: Many women spend their younger years focused on becoming.
10:24
SPEAKER_00: Demeter arrives when we begin asking what we are here to sustain.
10:30
SPEAKER_00: And this is where another misconception often appears.
10:34
SPEAKER_00: Many people hear words like cultivation, care, and stewardship, and immediately assume softness.
10:44
SPEAKER_00: But Demeter is not merely gentle, she is powerful.
10:49
SPEAKER_00: In fact, one of the most overlooked aspects of her mythology is what happens after Persephone is taken to the underworld.
11:00
SPEAKER_00: Demeter does not simply weep, she withdraws her gifts from the world.
11:06
SPEAKER_00: The earth becomes barren, nothing grows, the harvest ceases.
11:12
SPEAKER_00: Even the gods become concerned.
11:14
SPEAKER_00: Why?
11:16
SPEAKER_00: Because Demeter understands something profound.
11:19
SPEAKER_00: The one who sustains life possesses tremendous power.
11:24
SPEAKER_00: The one who nourishes civilization is not weak.
11:29
SPEAKER_00: The one who tends the garden is not powerless.
11:33
SPEAKER_00: The one who feeds the world holds influence that others often fail to recognize until it disappears.
11:42
SPEAKER_00: This is stewardship in its mature form, not martyrdom, not self sacrifice, not endless giving, but conscious responsibility combined with profound self respect.
12:00
SPEAKER_00: Demeter knows the value of what she provides, and she refuses to allow that value to be taken for granted.
12:09
SPEAKER_00: I think many women need this reminder, especially women who have spent years caring for others, providing, supporting, holding families together, holding businesses together, and holding communities together.
12:25
SPEAKER_00: Because the lesson of Demeter is not that care is weakness.
12:30
SPEAKER_00: The lesson of Demeter is that care creates civilization.
12:35
SPEAKER_00: And those who sustain life are far more powerful than they often realize.
12:41
SPEAKER_00: When we begin to see Demeter in this way, he transforms from a narrow motherhood archetype into something much larger.
12:51
SPEAKER_00: She becomes the archetype of stewardship itself, the woman who understands that everything valuable requires tending, the woman who knows that growth is seasonal, the woman who accepts responsibility for what has been entrusted to her care.
13:11
SPEAKER_00: And perhaps most importantly, the woman who understands that sustaining something beautiful is every bit as sacred as creating it.
13:26
SPEAKER_00: Next, we're going to examine stewardship and how it is different than sacrifice.
13:33
SPEAKER_00: We're going to also examine the feminine distortion.
13:38
SPEAKER_00: One of the reasons I believe many women have a complicated relationship with Demeter is because we have been taught to confuse stewardship with sacrifice.
13:50
SPEAKER_00: As women, we have been conditioned to believe and to act in a way that says a good woman gives, a good woman serves, good woman nurtures, a good woman puts everyone else first before herself.
14:12
SPEAKER_00: And while there is certainly beauty in generosity, there is also a shadow side to this conditioning.
14:20
SPEAKER_00: Because somewhere along the way, many women learned that care requires self erasure, that devotion requires depletion, that responsibility requires suffering, that love means abandoning themselves.
14:36
SPEAKER_00: And I don't believe that is Demeter's wisdom at all.
14:40
SPEAKER_00: In fact, I think it is a distortion of her wisdom by society.
14:47
SPEAKER_00: Because true stewardship and self sacrifice are not the same thing.
14:52
SPEAKER_00: A steward protects resources, a martyr consumes them.
14:57
SPEAKER_00: A steward preserves energy, a martyr exhausts it.
15:02
SPEAKER_00: A steward thinks long term.
15:05
SPEAKER_00: A martyr burns herself down in the name of short term approval.
15:11
SPEAKER_00: These are fundamentally different orientations toward life.
15:15
SPEAKER_00: Yet many women have been rewarded for the latter.
15:19
SPEAKER_00: We receive praise for overextending ourselves, for saying yes when we want to say no, for carrying responsibility that belong to other people, for tolerating relationships that drain us, and for endlessly proving our worth through sacrifice, through service.
15:41
SPEAKER_00: And eventually many women wake up exhausted, not because they lack love, not because they lack generosity, but because they have confused stewardship with self abandonment.
15:54
SPEAKER_00: Demeter invites a different perspective.
15:58
SPEAKER_00: She asks, What are you responsible for?
16:02
SPEAKER_00: And equally important, what are you not responsible for?
16:07
SPEAKER_00: That second question can be surprisingly difficult, especially for women who have spent years carrying emotional burdens that were never theirs to carry.
16:18
SPEAKER_00: Many women become caretakers of other people's feelings, other people's choices, other people's growth, other people's healing, and other people's consequences.
16:31
SPEAKER_00: And they call it love.
16:33
SPEAKER_00: But stewardship requires discernment.
16:36
SPEAKER_00: A gardener does not force a seed to grow.
16:40
SPEAKER_00: She creates the conditions for growth.
16:43
SPEAKER_00: Then she allows nature to do its work.
16:47
SPEAKER_00: There is profound wisdom in that, because stewardship is not control, it is not rescuing, it is not micromanaging.
16:58
SPEAKER_00: It does not take responsibility for outcomes that belong to someone else.
17:06
SPEAKER_00: It creates conditions, tending what is yours, and allowing life to unfold according to its own rhythms.
17:18
SPEAKER_00: I think many women entering midlife begin to understand this lesson in a deeper way.
17:25
SPEAKER_00: Because instead of I should say because after decades of trying to help everyone, save everyone, support everyone, they begin asking, Where has all of my energy gone?
17:43
SPEAKER_00: What have I neglected while caring for everyone else?
17:48
SPEAKER_00: What parts of my own life need tending?
17:51
SPEAKER_00: And those are not selfish, they are wise.
17:56
SPEAKER_00: A woman who neglects herself is not practicing stewardship.
18:02
SPEAKER_00: She is violating it, because stewardships the steward.
18:07
SPEAKER_00: The garden includes the gardener.
18:10
SPEAKER_00: The ecosystem includes the woman tending it.
18:15
SPEAKER_00: You cannot sustainably care for what matters if you continually abandon yourself in the process.
18:24
SPEAKER_00: And this is where Demeter differs from many cultural narratives about feminine virtue.
18:32
SPEAKER_00: The culture, our culture, often praises endless giving.
18:37
SPEAKER_00: Demeter teaches sustainable giving.
18:40
SPEAKER_00: Our culture often praises self sacrifice.
18:43
SPEAKER_00: Demeter teaches responsibility.
18:46
SPEAKER_00: Our culture often praises exhaustion as evidence of devotion.
18:52
SPEAKER_00: Demeter teaches cultivation, and cultivation requires resources.
18:59
SPEAKER_00: Think about a farmer.
19:01
SPEAKER_00: A farmer who continually depletes the soil eventually destroys the harvest.
19:06
SPEAKER_00: A farmer who never replenishes nutrients eventually creates scarcity.
19:12
SPEAKER_00: A farmer who ignores the health of the land cannot sustain abundance.
19:18
SPEAKER_00: Why would women be any different?
19:21
SPEAKER_00: Why would we expect ourselves to flourish while constantly giving from an empty reservoir?
19:28
SPEAKER_00: And the answer, of course, is that we cannot.
19:32
SPEAKER_00: And yet many women have inherited precisely that expectation to endlessly provide, to endlessly care, to endlessly accommodate without considering the cost.
19:47
SPEAKER_00: Demeter asks us to become more conscious of that.
19:51
SPEAKER_00: She asks us to consider sustainability.
19:55
SPEAKER_00: She asks us to think in seasons.
19:58
SPEAKER_00: She asks us to recognize that all living systems require renewal, including ourselves.
20:06
SPEAKER_00: And perhaps this is one of the most important lessons she offers modern women.
20:11
SPEAKER_00: You are not required to prove your goodness through depletion.
20:16
SPEAKER_00: You are not required to earn your worth through sacrifice.
20:21
SPEAKER_00: You are not required to carry responsibilities that do not belong to you.
20:27
SPEAKER_00: Your role is not to save the world.
20:30
SPEAKER_00: Your role is to steward what has genuinely been entrusted to your care.
20:37
SPEAKER_00: That may be your body, your health, your family, your business, your relationships, your children, your creative work, your community, and your vision.
20:51
SPEAKER_00: But whatever it is, stewardship requires enough self respect to preserve the resources necessary to continue the work.
21:03
SPEAKER_00: This is why boundaries are not the opposite of care.
21:07
SPEAKER_00: They are a form of care.
21:09
SPEAKER_00: Discernment is not the opposite of generosity, it is a form of generosity.
21:16
SPEAKER_00: Rest is not the opposite of responsibility, it is a part of responsibility.
21:24
SPEAKER_00: And perhaps that is the mature expression of Demeter.
21:28
SPEAKER_00: Not the woman who gives until she disappears, but the woman who understands that tending life requires wisdom, sustainability, and devotion.
21:40
SPEAKER_00: The woman who knows that the goal is not sacrifice, the goal is flourishing for herself, for those she loves, and for whatever she has been called the steward.
21:56
SPEAKER_00: Next we're going to look at the child free demeter.
22:00
SPEAKER_00: Creating without giving birth.
22:03
SPEAKER_00: One of the reasons I wanted to create this episode is because I suspect there are many women listening who have had the same reaction to Demeter that I once had, a quiet distancing.
22:16
SPEAKER_00: A subtle sense that this archetype was meant perhaps for someone else, for mothers, women raising children, for women whose lives unfolded according to a more traditional path.
22:31
SPEAKER_00: Sometimes we can use it when in the presence of children or when mothering children that are not ours.
22:39
SPEAKER_00: But perhaps we consciously or unconsciously have concluded that this isn't my archetype.
22:49
SPEAKER_00: I understand that feeling.
22:51
SPEAKER_00: As a woman without children, I spent many years relating more naturally to archetypes like Persephone, Athena, also Hathor and Lilith and Magdalene and Hecate.
23:08
SPEAKER_00: Those archetypes felt immediately relevant to my life.
23:12
SPEAKER_00: But Demeter remained somewhat in the background until I began to understand stewardship.
23:19
SPEAKER_00: And suddenly everything changed.
23:22
SPEAKER_00: Because once you remove the assumption that Demeter is only about motherhood, you begin to see her everywhere.
23:31
SPEAKER_00: You begin to realize that many women are already living Demeter's archetype every single day.
23:38
SPEAKER_00: They simply aren't doing it through children.
23:41
SPEAKER_00: They are doing it through creation, through cultivation, through devotion to something larger than themselves.
23:50
SPEAKER_00: And that is where I think we need we need to we need a much broader understanding of feminine regeneration and generativity because there are many ways to bring life into the world.
24:09
SPEAKER_00: Some women create children, some women create businesses, some women create movements, some women create art.
24:18
SPEAKER_00: Some women create communities, some women create healing.
24:24
SPEAKER_00: Some women create institutions, some women create knowledge, and some women create opportunities that transform the lives of people they may never even meet.
24:38
SPEAKER_00: And all of these are expressions of creation.
24:42
SPEAKER_00: All of these require cultivation.
24:45
SPEAKER_00: All of these require stewardship.
24:49
SPEAKER_00: And all of these require all of these carry a distinctly demeter like energy.
24:58
SPEAKER_00: I think this is especially important because many women have internalized the idea that motherhood is the ultimate expression of feminine fulfillment, especially in the society I currently live in.
25:11
SPEAKER_00: And while motherhood can certainly be meaningful for many women, it is not the only meaningful path.
25:19
SPEAKER_00: It is not the only sacred path, and it is not the only path through which a woman contributes to the future.
25:28
SPEAKER_00: Civilizations have always required more than mothers.
25:33
SPEAKER_00: They have required teachers, healers, artists, mystics, leaders, builders, entrepreneurs, visionaries, caretakers of culture, caretakers of knowledge, and caretakers of wisdom.
25:52
SPEAKER_00: In other words, civilizations have always required women expressing demeter in many different forms.
26:00
SPEAKER_00: When I look at my own life, I can see that more clearly now.
26:04
SPEAKER_00: It may not be raising children, but I have spent years cultivating ideas, building communities, creating courses, recording hundreds of podcast episodes, holding space for conversations about healing, growth, sovereignty, and transformation.
26:22
SPEAKER_00: And those things require stewardship, not for a week, for a month, but for years.
26:30
SPEAKER_00: And that realization helps me understand something important.
26:35
SPEAKER_00: Demeter's energy is not defined by what you create.
26:40
SPEAKER_00: It is defined by how you tend to what you create.
26:46
SPEAKER_00: That distinction matters, because many people enjoy the act of creation.
26:52
SPEAKER_00: Far fewer enjoy the responsibility of creation.
26:56
SPEAKER_00: It's excite exciting to start something new.
27:00
SPEAKER_00: It's far more demanding to sustain it.
27:04
SPEAKER_00: Anyone can plant seeds.
27:06
SPEAKER_00: Demeter stays for the seasons that follow.
27:10
SPEAKER_00: She remains through uncertainty.
27:12
SPEAKER_00: She remains through doubt, drought and doubt.
27:17
SPEAKER_00: She remains through slow growth.
27:19
SPEAKER_00: She remains when the novelty disappears.
27:24
SPEAKER_00: And I think that this is one of the reasons this archetype often emerges later in life.
27:30
SPEAKER_00: Because younger versions of ourselves are often focused on possibility.
27:36
SPEAKER_00: Midlife asks us to become responsible for what we have built, to tend to what matters, to deepen rather than simply expand, to cultivate rather than constantly initiate.
27:51
SPEAKER_00: And for women without children, this can be an especially empowering realization.
27:59
SPEAKER_00: Because it invites us to stop measuring our lives against a single template.
28:05
SPEAKER_00: It invites us to ask a different question or several different questions.
28:11
SPEAKER_00: Not what am I missing?
28:13
SPEAKER_00: But what am I creating?
28:15
SPEAKER_00: Not what path didn't I take, but what path am I cultivating now?
28:22
SPEAKER_00: Not how do I fix someone else's definition, or I should say fit into someone else's definition of fulfillment, but what has life asked me to steward?
28:36
SPEAKER_00: Those questions often reveal a very different story, a richer story, a more expansive story.
28:44
SPEAKER_00: A story in which feminine purpose is not limited to one expression.
28:49
SPEAKER_00: I think there is also something profoundly healing about recognizing that contribution takes many forms.
28:58
SPEAKER_00: Some women shape future generations through their children.
29:02
SPEAKER_00: Some women shape future generations through their work.
29:05
SPEAKER_00: Some women do both.
29:07
SPEAKER_00: Neither path is inherently superior.
29:10
SPEAKER_00: Both require devotion.
29:13
SPEAKER_00: Both require sacrifice of a certain kind.
29:17
SPEAKER_00: Both require stewardship, and both leave a legacy.
29:22
SPEAKER_00: Because ultimately, Demeter is not concerned with whether you have given birth.
29:28
SPEAKER_00: She is concerned with whether you are participating in the cultivation of life, whether you are nourishing something that will outlast you, whether you are helping something grow, whether you are tending what has been entrusted to your care.
29:48
SPEAKER_00: That is the deeper invitation of this archetype.
29:52
SPEAKER_00: And perhaps that is why Demeter has become so meaningful to me recently.
29:58
SPEAKER_00: Not because I suddenly relate to her through motherhood, because I finally recognize her in the years I have spent cultivating a life, a body, a business, a body of work, a vision, a future.
30:15
SPEAKER_00: And perhaps many of you are beginning to recognize her there as well, not as the god, the goddess of motherhood alone, but as the goddess of sacred cultivation, the woman who teaches us that creating something is only the beginning.
30:33
SPEAKER_00: The real work and often the most meaningful work is learning how to tend it.
30:42
SPEAKER_00: Next we're going to examine Demeter and midlife power, often why she arrives later in our lives.
30:53
SPEAKER_00: One of the questions I have been asking myself recently is this Why has Demeter become so much more interesting to me now than she was ten years ago?
31:03
SPEAKER_00: Why did I spend years exploring Persephone, Lilith, Lakate, and Magdalene, Athena, and so many other feminine archetypes while Demeter remained largely in the background?
31:18
SPEAKER_00: I don't think it's because she was absent, I think it's because I wasn't ready to see her.
31:24
SPEAKER_00: And perhaps that is true for many women, because Demeter is an archetype that often reveals herself later in life.
31:33
SPEAKER_00: Not because younger women cannot access her wisdom, but because stewardship becomes increasingly relevant as life becomes more substantial.
31:44
SPEAKER_00: When we are young, life is often organized around becoming.
31:49
SPEAKER_00: Who am I?
31:50
SPEAKER_00: What do I want?
31:51
SPEAKER_00: What am I capable of?
31:53
SPEAKER_00: What path will I choose?
31:56
SPEAKER_00: There is a natural focus on discovery, experimentation, exploration, identity formation.
32:04
SPEAKER_00: And these are important developmental tasks.
32:08
SPEAKER_00: The maiden archetype thrives in this space.
32:12
SPEAKER_00: Persephone thrives in this space.
32:15
SPEAKER_00: Even Athena, in many ways, thrives in this space through learning, mastery, intellectual development, becoming more herself.
32:27
SPEAKER_00: But eventually a shift begins to occur.
32:30
SPEAKER_00: The question is no longer who am I becoming?
32:34
SPEAKER_00: The question is what am I building?
32:38
SPEAKER_00: And eventually, what am I responsible for sustaining?
32:43
SPEAKER_00: That is where Demeter enters the conversation, because Demeter is less interested in potential than in cultivation, less interested in beginnings than in continuity, less interested in possibility than in stewardship.
33:03
SPEAKER_00: And I think that this is one of the hidden gifts of midlife.
33:07
SPEAKER_00: Midlife is often portrayed as a period of loss, loss of youth, loss of beauty, loss of opportunity, and loss of relevance.
33:18
SPEAKER_00: But I increasingly believe that narrative misses the deeper transformation taking place.
33:26
SPEAKER_00: Because what many women gain in midlife is substance.
33:31
SPEAKER_00: They gain perspective, they gain discernment, competence, emotional maturity, pattern recognition, wisdom earned through experience.
33:45
SPEAKER_00: And perhaps most importantly, they gain something worth stewarding.
33:50
SPEAKER_00: By midlife, many women have spent decades building, building careers, building relationships, building expertise, building resilience, building communities, building businesses, and building a deeper relationship with themselves.
34:09
SPEAKER_00: And once something substantial exists, stewardship becomes necessary.
34:15
SPEAKER_00: You cannot sustain a meaningful life through maiden energy alone.
34:21
SPEAKER_00: At some point, cultivation becomes more important than exploration.
34:26
SPEAKER_00: This doesn't mean adventure disappears, it doesn't mean curiosity disappears, it doesn't mean growth disappears.
34:36
SPEAKER_00: But the center of gravity shifts.
34:39
SPEAKER_00: The focus becomes less about acquisition and more about refinement, less about proving and more about embodying, less about becoming and more about tending.
34:53
SPEAKER_00: I see this in my own life.
34:55
SPEAKER_00: In my twenties, I was gathering experiences, learning, traveling, exploring, studying, trying to understand who I was.
35:06
SPEAKER_00: In my thirties, I was building.
35:09
SPEAKER_00: I was healing, I was reconstructing, and I was creating foundations.
35:15
SPEAKER_00: And now into my forties, a different question is emerging.
35:21
SPEAKER_00: How do I steward what I have built?
35:23
SPEAKER_00: How do I deepen it?
35:25
SPEAKER_00: How do I strengthen it?
35:27
SPEAKER_00: How do I ensure that it continues to grow in a healthy and sustainable way?
35:33
SPEAKER_00: Those are profoundly Demeter questions.
35:36
SPEAKER_00: And I suspect many women listening are asking similar questions, not because life is ending, but because life is becoming more substantial.
35:48
SPEAKER_00: There is another aspect of Demeter that feels particularly relevant in midlife.
35:53
SPEAKER_00: She teaches us to think in seasons.
35:57
SPEAKER_00: One of the greatest gifts of age is that we begin to understand cycles.
36:02
SPEAKER_00: We stop expecting life to move in a straight line.
36:07
SPEAKER_00: We recognize periods of growth and periods of rest, periods of abundance and periods of uncertainty, periods of expansion and periods of contraction.
36:19
SPEAKER_00: We learn that every harvest is followed by another planting season, and every winter eventually gives way to spring.
36:29
SPEAKER_00: This perspective creates a different kind of confidence, not the confidence of certainty, but the confidence of experience.
36:39
SPEAKER_00: The confidence that comes from knowing I have survived difficult seasons before.
36:45
SPEAKER_00: I know how growth works, and I understand that life unfolds in cycles.
36:52
SPEAKER_00: Demeter embodies this wisdom.
36:55
SPEAKER_00: She is deeply connected to the rhythms of nature, to the reality that growth cannot be rushed, to the understanding that every living thing moves through seasons.
37:08
SPEAKER_00: And perhaps this is why she becomes so valuable in midlife, because by this stage most women have experienced enough of life to recognize the truth of those cycles.
37:21
SPEAKER_00: We have known heartbreak, success, disappointment, renewal, loss, and transformation.
37:30
SPEAKER_00: We have planted seeds that flourished and seeds that did not.
37:36
SPEAKER_00: We have learned patience, whether we wanted to or not.
37:41
SPEAKER_00: And all of that experience creates a deeper capacity for stewardship, a deeper capacity for tending life wisely.
37:50
SPEAKER_00: I also think Demeter offers an important corrective to a culture obsessed with perpetual youth.
37:59
SPEAKER_00: Our culture often celebrates the woman who is becoming.
38:20
SPEAKER_00: Yet that woman possesses tremendous power, not the power of novelty, not the power of performance, but the power of substance.
38:34
SPEAKER_00: The power of a woman who understands how to create continuity, how to create stability, how to create nourishment, and how to create conditions in which life can flourish.
38:51
SPEAKER_00: And perhaps that is Demeter's greatest gift to women in midlife.
38:55
SPEAKER_00: She reminds us that our value does not diminish as we age.
39:00
SPEAKER_00: In many ways it deepens, because every year adds another layer of wisdom, another season survived, another harvest gathered, another lesson integrated.
39:15
SPEAKER_00: Demeter is not the archetype of youthful possibility.
39:19
SPEAKER_00: She is the archetype of mature abundance, the woman who understands that true power is not merely the ability to create something, it is the ability to sustain it, to nourish it, to protect it, to help it flourish over time.
39:40
SPEAKER_00: And that kind of power often becomes visible only after many years, which may be exactly why Demeter arrives when she does.
39:55
SPEAKER_00: Next we're going to discuss Demeter, Athena, and Hera, and why mature women need all three.
40:04
SPEAKER_00: One of the reasons I have become increasingly fascinated by feminine archetypes is that no single archetype is sufficient on its own.
40:14
SPEAKER_00: Each one offers a particular gift, a particular lens, a particular form of wisdom.
40:21
SPEAKER_00: But when we over-identify with any single archetype, we often become imbalanced.
40:28
SPEAKER_00: What begins as a strength can eventually become a limitation.
40:34
SPEAKER_00: And I think this is especially true when we look at Demeter, Athena, and Hera.
40:40
SPEAKER_00: Because together these three archetypes create a remarkably powerful model of mature feminine leadership.
40:50
SPEAKER_00: In many ways they represent three different dimensions of feminine authority.
40:55
SPEAKER_00: Athena teaches strategy.
40:58
SPEAKER_00: Hera teaches sovereignty.
41:00
SPEAKER_00: Demeter teaches stewardship.
41:03
SPEAKER_00: And I would argue that mature feminine power requires all three.
41:09
SPEAKER_00: Let's begin with Athena.
41:11
SPEAKER_00: Athena is the goddess of wisdom, strategy, discernment, intellectual mastery, and war.
41:19
SPEAKER_00: She sees patterns.
41:21
SPEAKER_00: She understands systems.
41:24
SPEAKER_00: She thinks several moves ahead.
41:27
SPEAKER_00: She values competence, preparation, skill, and precision.
41:33
SPEAKER_00: Many women who are builders, leaders, entrepreneurs, scholars, and visionaries resonate strongly with Athena.
41:42
SPEAKER_00: I certainly do.
41:44
SPEAKER_00: Athena teaches us how to think, how to solve problems, how to navigate complexity, how to act with intelligence rather than impulse.
41:55
SPEAKER_00: But Athena has a shadow.
41:57
SPEAKER_00: Without balance, Athena can become overly cerebral, detached from the heart, detached from the body, detached from the human realities that exist beneath every system.
42:12
SPEAKER_00: Strategy without stewardship can become sterile, brilliant, but disconnected.
42:21
SPEAKER_00: And this is where Demeter enters.
42:24
SPEAKER_00: Demeter reminds Athena that people are not simply systems to optimize.
42:31
SPEAKER_00: They are living beings to nourish.
42:34
SPEAKER_00: She reminds us that leadership is not only about vision, it is also about cultivation, not only about achieving outcomes, but creating conditions to which life can thrive.
42:48
SPEAKER_00: Demeter softens Athena without diminishing her.
42:52
SPEAKER_00: She humanizes wisdom, she grounds strategy into care, and this helps both archetypes thrive.
43:03
SPEAKER_00: Now let's look at Hera.
43:05
SPEAKER_00: Hera is often deeply misunderstood as well.
43:09
SPEAKER_00: Many people reduce Hera to marriage, just as they reduce Demeter to motherhood, but Hera is far more than that.
43:18
SPEAKER_00: At her highest expression, Hera represents sovereignty, dignity, self respect, and legitimacy.
43:28
SPEAKER_00: The woman who understands her own authority, the woman who occupies her throne without apology, the woman who recognizes her worth.
43:38
SPEAKER_00: Hera teaches boundaries, standards, commitment, responsibility.
43:45
SPEAKER_00: She refuses to make herself small, and for many women, reclaiming Hera is essential, or I should say an essential developmental task, especially after years of people pleasing, Self doubt or seeking external validation.
44:04
SPEAKER_00: But Hera also has a shadow.
44:06
SPEAKER_00: Without balance, sovereignty can become rigidity, control, isolation, status without connection, authority without warmth.
44:18
SPEAKER_00: And again, Demeter provides the compliment.
44:22
SPEAKER_00: Demeter reminds Hera that leadership is not merely about holding power.
44:27
SPEAKER_00: It is about using power in service of something meaningful.
44:32
SPEAKER_00: It is about tending what has been entrusted to your care.
44:37
SPEAKER_00: She brings nourishment to sovereignty, compassion to authority, generosity to leadership.
44:44
SPEAKER_00: And suddenly something beautiful begins to emerge.
44:48
SPEAKER_00: Athena provides the vision, Hera provides the authority, and Demeter provides the stewardship.
44:56
SPEAKER_00: Athena asks, what is the strategy?
45:00
SPEAKER_00: Hera asks, what are the standards?
45:03
SPEAKER_00: Demeter asks, what must be cultivated?
45:08
SPEAKER_00: Together these questions create a much more complete form of feminine leadership.
45:14
SPEAKER_00: In fact, when I look at my own life, I can see how each of these archetypes has become increasingly important.
45:22
SPEAKER_00: Athena has been present for many years, my love of learning, analysis, systems, psychology, finance, and strategy.
45:32
SPEAKER_00: That is unmistakably Athena.
45:35
SPEAKER_00: Hera has emerged more strongly in recent years, the development of self-respect, boundaries, and sovereignty, a willingness to occupy space without seeking permission, a deeper relationship with my own authority.
45:52
SPEAKER_00: And now Demeter is arriving, not replacing Hera, not replacing Athena, but complimenting them, asking new questions, inviting me to think not only about what I am building, but what I am sustaining.
46:09
SPEAKER_00: Not only about power, but responsibility, not only about vision, but cultivation.
46:17
SPEAKER_00: And perhaps this is why I believe Demeter becomes so important in midlife, because many women have already spent years developing Athena.
46:26
SPEAKER_00: Many women have spent years reclaiming Hera, but eventually another layer emerges.
46:33
SPEAKER_00: The realization that wisdom and sovereignty are not enough on their own.
46:39
SPEAKER_00: Something must also be tended, something must be nourished, something must be stewarded.
46:47
SPEAKER_00: Otherwise, where and what are all that wisdom and authority for?
46:56
SPEAKER_00: I think this is one of the most profound transitions of mature womanhood.
47:02
SPEAKER_00: We stop viewing power as something we possess, and begin viewing power as something we are responsible for.
47:11
SPEAKER_00: We stop asking, how do I become powerful?
47:15
SPEAKER_00: And start asking, how do I use my power more wisely?
47:19
SPEAKER_00: How do I sustain what matters?
47:22
SPEAKER_00: How do I contribute to something larger than myself?
47:26
SPEAKER_00: That is Demeter's territory.
47:29
SPEAKER_00: And when Athena, Hera, and Demeter work together, a woman becomes extraordinarily effective.
47:37
SPEAKER_00: She is thoughtful without becoming detached, powerful without becoming domineering, caring without becoming self sacrificing, strategic without losing her humanity, sovereign without losing her heart, and nurturing without losing herself.
47:58
SPEAKER_00: She becomes capable of building, leading, and sustaining.
48:02
SPEAKER_00: And perhaps that is the deeper invitation of these archetypes, not to choose between them, but to integrate them, to allow each one to contribute her wisdom, because the most substantial women are rarely one thing.
48:23
SPEAKER_00: They are many things woven together, and Demeter, Athena, and Hera form a particularly beautiful constellation of feminine maturity.
48:37
SPEAKER_00: Lastly, we're going to be talking about stewarding the life that you have built, the quiet responsibility of becoming.
48:47
SPEAKER_00: As we begin to bring this conversation to a close, I want to shift from mythology and archetypes into something more personal, because ultimately, the purpose of an archetype is not simply to understand it, the purpose is to recognize where it lives within us, to see how its wisdom might illuminate our own lives.
49:10
SPEAKER_00: And when I think about Demeter, I find myself returning to a simple question.
49:15
SPEAKER_00: What am I being asked to steward?
49:18
SPEAKER_00: Not what am I trying to acquire, not what am I trying to prove, not what am I still lacking, but what has already been entrusted to my care.
49:29
SPEAKER_00: This question becomes increasingly important as we move through adulthood, especially in a culture that constantly encourages us to focus on what comes next, the next goal, the next achievement, the next milestone, the next chapter.
49:46
SPEAKER_00: There is nothing inherently wrong with ambition.
49:50
SPEAKER_00: Growth is part of being alive.
49:52
SPEAKER_00: Many people spend so much time looking toward the horizon that they fail to notice what is already growing in the garden around them.
50:02
SPEAKER_00: Demeter asks us to pause long enough to see it, to recognize what has already been built, what has already been cultivated, what has already taken root.
50:15
SPEAKER_00: Because stewardship begins with awareness.
50:18
SPEAKER_00: You cannot tend what you refuse to acknowledge.
50:22
SPEAKER_00: You cannot nourish what you fail to see.
50:26
SPEAKER_00: And I think many women underestimate the lives they have already created, perhaps because those lives don't resemble the ones they imagined, perhaps because some dreams change, perhaps because certain milestones never arrived, or perhaps because they have become so accustomed to carrying responsibility that they no longer recognize the significance of what they have built.
50:54
SPEAKER_00: But if you pause and look carefully, there may be more abundance present than you realize.
51:03
SPEAKER_00: There may be relationships worth protecting, wisdom worth sharing, skills worth refining, a body worth carrying worth caring for, a business worth strengthening, a community worth nurturing, a creative vision worth continuing, a future worth investing in.
51:28
SPEAKER_00: All of these are forms of stewardship.
51:31
SPEAKER_00: All of them require attention.
51:34
SPEAKER_00: One of the things I appreciate most about Demeter is that she teaches us to value maintenance.
51:41
SPEAKER_00: That might sound simple, but maintenance is one of the least celebrated forms of power in our culture.
51:49
SPEAKER_00: We celebrate beginnings, breakthroughs, dramatic transformations.
51:54
SPEAKER_00: Yet some of the most meaningful work in life is far less visible.
51:59
SPEAKER_00: Maintaining a healthy relationship, maintaining physical health, maintaining emotional well being, maintaining a business, maintaining friendships, maintaining integrity, and maintaining trust.
52:16
SPEAKER_00: These are not glamorous achievements, they are ongoing practices, and yet they form the foundation of a substantial life.
52:26
SPEAKER_00: Demeter understands this.
52:29
SPEAKER_00: She understands that flourishing is not a single event.
52:34
SPEAKER_00: It is a continuous relationship, a continual act of tending, a continual act of choosing.
52:43
SPEAKER_00: And perhaps this is where stewardship becomes less about obligation and more about devotion.
52:52
SPEAKER_00: Because the healthiest forms of stewardship are rooted in love, not fear, not control, not perfectionism, love.
53:03
SPEAKER_00: A gardener tends the garden because she values it.
53:06
SPEAKER_00: A teacher nurtures students because she values growth.
53:11
SPEAKER_00: A leader supports a team because she values the mission.
53:16
SPEAKER_00: A woman cares for her body because she values the life she inhabits.
53:22
SPEAKER_00: Stewardship is not punishment, it is relationship.
53:27
SPEAKER_00: It is the ongoing expression of care toward what matters.
53:32
SPEAKER_00: I also think Demeter invites us to become more intentional about where we place our energy.
53:40
SPEAKER_00: Because not everything deserves stewardship.
53:44
SPEAKER_00: Not every obligation deserves our devotion.
53:48
SPEAKER_00: Not every demand deserves our attention.
53:51
SPEAKER_00: Not every relationship deserves unlimited access to our resources.
53:58
SPEAKER_00: One of the greatest lessons of maturity is learning discernment.
54:03
SPEAKER_00: Learning what belongs in the garden and what does not.
54:07
SPEAKER_00: Learning what is life giving and what is merely draining.
54:12
SPEAKER_00: Learning where our efforts create genuine growth and where they simply disappear into endless depletion.
54:20
SPEAKER_00: Demeter teaches selective devotion, conscious cultivation, wise investment.
54:28
SPEAKER_00: And perhaps that lesson becomes increasingly valuable as life grows more complex, because none of us possesses infinite time, infinite energy, infinite attention.
54:43
SPEAKER_00: Stewardship requires choices.
54:46
SPEAKER_00: It requires priorities.
54:49
SPEAKER_00: It requires clarity about what matters most.
54:52
SPEAKER_00: And perhaps that is the question I want to leave you with today.
54:57
SPEAKER_00: Not what do you still need to become, but what are you being asked to steward?
55:04
SPEAKER_00: What in your life deserves greater care?
55:07
SPEAKER_00: What deserves more attention?
55:09
SPEAKER_00: What deserves more protection?
55:12
SPEAKER_00: What deserves cultivation?
55:14
SPEAKER_00: And what deserves your patience, your devotion, your consistency, and your love?
55:22
SPEAKER_00: Because the truth is that many of the things we hope will flourish do not require dramatic transformation.
55:31
SPEAKER_00: They require tending.
55:33
SPEAKER_00: Small acts repeated over time, attention given consistently, care expressed patiently.
55:42
SPEAKER_00: And that may be one of Demeter's deepest teachings.
55:46
SPEAKER_00: The most meaningful things in life are rarely sustained through intensity.
55:51
SPEAKER_00: They are sustained through devotion, through stewardship, through a willingness to return to what matters again and again.
56:01
SPEAKER_00: And perhaps that is what mature feminine power ultimately looks like, not endless striving, not endless proving, not endless becoming, but the quiet responsibility of tending the life you have already begun to build, the wisdom to recognize what is precious, and the devotion to help it flourish.
56:28
SPEAKER_00: Thank you for being here.
56:30
SPEAKER_00: Let whatever was useful in this episode settle in its own time.
56:35
SPEAKER_00: Clarity, I have found, tends to unfold naturally when we give it space.
56:41
SPEAKER_00: Until next time, stay rooted, stay sovereign, and stay true to your feminine path.
