- 0:00Speaker 1: This is the Bad Hire, the show where epig hiring
- 0:03Speaker 1: failures and remarkable wins fuel better hiring. Now I'm your host,
- 0:07Speaker 1: Ken Monroe, and each week we dive into real life
- 0:09Speaker 1: stories with hrpros, recruiters and leaders who've seen it all.
- 0:14Speaker 2: Because, let's face it, everyone remembers.
- 0:17Speaker 3: The Bad Hire.
- 0:28Speaker 2: Hey, welcome to the Bad Hire.
- 0:30Speaker 3: We got another episode coming up, and I'm with Nathan
- 0:32Speaker 3: and with Dallan Wortham. He's the founder and CEO of
- 0:36Speaker 3: Charter Connect. Happy to have you, brother.
- 0:38Speaker 4: Oh, it's great to be I this is I'm so stoked.
- 0:40Speaker 4: This is gonna be fun.
- 0:41Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 0:42Speaker 3: Yeah, So tell me. Tell me a little bit about
- 0:44Speaker 3: Charter Connect. I wanted to let people understand what you do.
- 0:46Speaker 3: The reason I love it. You're a CEO and you hire,
- 0:50Speaker 3: You're hiring people. You got a growing company and so
- 0:52Speaker 3: you've got that. Maybe you have a story of your own,
- 0:55Speaker 3: but I know you've had a long career or two
- 0:56Speaker 3: you can talk about. So what's up.
- 0:58Speaker 2: Tell me about Charter Connect.
- 0:59Speaker 4: Yes, I was an airline pilot and to become an
- 1:03Speaker 4: airline pilot, I worked at a market agency to help
- 1:08Speaker 4: clients has grow their company. And one of our clients
- 1:10Speaker 4: was a charter school, and it went really well. They
- 1:13Speaker 4: kind of word of mouth told their friends, and pretty
- 1:16Speaker 4: soon I had, you know, dozens of charter schools wanting
- 1:19Speaker 4: me to help with them with their marketing. And so
- 1:22Speaker 4: I stopped flying and I started a business. Had no
- 1:25Speaker 4: idea how to do anything in regards to running a business,
- 1:28Speaker 4: and made a ton of mistakes along the way. But
- 1:32Speaker 4: it's been a big blessing, a good experience, and here
- 1:35Speaker 4: we are now with hopefully a little bit more knowledge
- 1:38Speaker 4: than I had five years ago when I started it.
- 1:40Speaker 3: Yeah, that's kind of a crazy path from airline pilot
- 1:43Speaker 3: to entrepreneur.
- 1:44Speaker 4: Yeah, it's been break it through a firehouse, aren't you.
- 1:47Speaker 2: You're in business with your brother, maybe right?
- 1:48Speaker 4: Yeah, I have a twin brother that looks pretty much
- 1:51Speaker 4: just like me. Like if I take off my glasses
- 1:52Speaker 4: and say, you can't tell really and so now I'm
- 1:55Speaker 4: Sean and I'm dowling again. So yeah, it's.
- 1:58Speaker 3: Okay, I know that next time. I don't mean I
- 2:00Speaker 3: knew he was your brother. I don't think I knew
- 2:01Speaker 3: it was your twin.
- 2:02Speaker 4: Yeah, so if you want a cameo, yeah, yeah. So
- 2:05Speaker 4: it's been really good having someone to be able to
- 2:09Speaker 4: ride the battle with.
- 2:10Speaker 3: Yeah, for sure, that's awesome. So you know what we
- 2:13Speaker 3: do here, we we you know, when we started the
- 2:15Speaker 3: Bad Hire, I just love the idea of of Uh,
- 2:19Speaker 3: every time I'm hanging around with like talent acquisition pros
- 2:21Speaker 3: and recruiters and stuff, when we're just when we're just
- 2:24Speaker 3: chopping it up, that almost always turned to like guys
- 2:27Speaker 3: telling funny stories, Darius, uh, you know, just about interview
- 2:31Speaker 3: blow ups or somebody showed up like crazy on the
- 2:34Speaker 3: first day or like melt down later. And as I
- 2:38Speaker 3: was talking about, you know, doing the show, I was like,
- 2:40Speaker 3: I just I don't want to try to be an
- 2:42Speaker 3: expert to anybody and try to like I got to
- 2:44Speaker 3: come up with some words of wisdom every single show.
- 2:46Speaker 3: I just I just want to have fun and uh
- 2:48Speaker 3: and chop it up and and and and enjoy and
- 2:51Speaker 3: so came up with the idea of the Bad Hire,
- 2:54Speaker 3: and we just you know, the goal is to get
- 2:56Speaker 3: people to submit their stories to us, right, real life
- 2:59Speaker 3: stories just where hires went wrong. And I do think
- 3:03Speaker 3: there's learning there, right.
- 3:05Speaker 2: You know.
- 3:06Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean as we talk about them, you could
- 3:08Speaker 3: be like, bro, I know that story, and you know,
- 3:10Speaker 3: we probably have all learned a lesson.
- 3:12Speaker 5: I realize there's a lot of stories out there. Yeah,
- 3:14Speaker 5: a lot of bad.
- 3:15Speaker 3: Yeah, that's what's crazy is is the amount of stories
- 3:18Speaker 3: that we hear and just some of the shenanigans that
- 3:22Speaker 3: go on in interviews and all that kind of fun stuff.
- 3:24Speaker 3: So so what we did we put together show. I
- 3:26Speaker 3: mean we're like ten episodes in or something. This maybe
- 3:28Speaker 3: this is episode nine. And then to encourage folks to
- 3:34Speaker 3: to submit their stories to us. To us, we put
- 3:36Speaker 3: together a ten thousand dollars contest best story of the
- 3:39Speaker 3: season the season that we be around twenty four shows,
- 3:42Speaker 3: best story of the season. Our producers who up with
- 3:45Speaker 3: us together, they'll help select that, will choose it, give
- 3:48Speaker 3: somebody ten thousand bucks for the best story, which right,
- 3:51Speaker 3: you love that right?
- 3:52Speaker 2: So are you are you gonna submit one today?
- 3:54Speaker 4: Oh?
- 3:54Speaker 6: Yeah, for sure, you're telling a story hundred dollars, right,
- 3:58Speaker 6: And what we need to be great, we need great
- 4:02Speaker 6: marketing to get people.
- 4:04Speaker 2: To submit stories. So you know, we'll just lean into.
- 4:07Speaker 3: You for that because that's what you're an expert at.
- 4:09Speaker 2: So yeah, that's awesome.
- 4:11Speaker 3: Yeah, So that's uh, that's uh why I started it,
- 4:15Speaker 3: and h the first. I mean, I am having a
- 4:18Speaker 3: T shirt made. You got to listen to some of
- 4:20Speaker 3: the shows they come out and when you hear this
- 4:22Speaker 3: one having a T shirt, Maide says, don't be a
- 4:25Speaker 3: cat nuzzler?
- 4:27Speaker 2: Is it nuzzler?
- 4:28Speaker 3: I think, don't be a cat nuzzler.
- 4:29Speaker 5: Yeah, it's a memorable word.
- 4:31Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 4:31Speaker 3: Yeah, I'm gonna get us. Don't be real small cat nuzzler.
- 4:35Speaker 3: So it just looks like I'm a cat nezzler when
- 4:37Speaker 3: you look at closest. Yeah, it's just a great story,
- 4:40Speaker 3: is it? Is it?
- 4:40Speaker 2: Episode two?
- 4:41Speaker 5: Yeah, got a teams call video call, literally like showing
- 4:45Speaker 5: up to his team's calls sureless more or less snuggling
- 4:48Speaker 5: with his cat in bed.
- 4:49Speaker 2: Yeah, lating us the cat in bed on.
- 4:51Speaker 5: K news that the camera was on and still And
- 4:53Speaker 5: I saw a video this week you shared with me.
- 4:55Speaker 3: Maybe like someone telling a story about somebody who just
- 5:00Speaker 3: laid in bed.
- 5:01Speaker 5: Yeah, on a client call, like sir, list in bed
- 5:03Speaker 5: and hang out with their cat.
- 5:04Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 5:05Speaker 3: Maybe I don't know. Maybe maybe that's how you read.
- 5:07Speaker 3: Maybe you're when you're not dressed up like this. Maybe
- 5:10Speaker 3: maybe that's what you're.
- 5:11Speaker 2: Doing at work at home. Yeah, So I don't know.
- 5:15Speaker 2: So anyway, we take those stories.
- 5:17Speaker 3: These guys source some stories right now, we're sourcing stories
- 5:21Speaker 3: off the internet to draw them and get him into
- 5:22Speaker 3: the show. And then just you know, really hopeful for
- 5:26Speaker 3: engaging an audience that will would love to tell their
- 5:29Speaker 3: stories and have some fun. And I so that's what
- 5:31Speaker 3: we're up to. Yeah, yeah, good stuff.
- 5:33Speaker 4: Awesome, awesome, awesome.
- 5:34Speaker 2: All right, so.
- 5:36Speaker 3: Let me I'll kick it off and I'll read I'll
- 5:38Speaker 3: read one to you and then you know, we're just
- 5:41Speaker 3: I'm excited.
- 5:42Speaker 2: Yeah, I see what the reaction is.
- 5:44Speaker 3: So this is Hey, I work at an h I
- 5:46Speaker 3: work at HR at a company with over five hundred employees,
- 5:49Speaker 3: so I'm used to dealing with wild situations at least
- 5:52Speaker 3: once a week. I end up dealing with an incident.
- 5:56Speaker 3: We had to fire young woman for repeatedly taunting and
- 5:59Speaker 3: harassing their employee. It wasn't a snap decision. There had
- 6:03Speaker 3: been complaints, documentation, warnings, but eventually it was clear she
- 6:08Speaker 3: couldn't stay as as part of the process, I escorted
- 6:13Speaker 3: her back to her desk. This is you know, everyone
- 6:17Speaker 3: hates this part of letting someone go. When you got
- 6:19Speaker 3: to do the proverbial walk out.
- 6:20Speaker 5: And walk out, just like, oh this first sucks.
- 6:25Speaker 3: Okay. I escorted her back to the desk so she
- 6:27Speaker 3: could gather her personal belongings.
- 6:30Speaker 6: Uh.
- 6:30Speaker 3: Usually that part is uneventful.
- 6:33Speaker 2: It is like usually a shame.
- 6:35Speaker 3: You're just like, let me just get out of here, people,
- 6:38Speaker 3: grab a coat, a few knick knacks, you know, quietly
- 6:41Speaker 3: head out.
- 6:41Speaker 2: Not this time.
- 6:42Speaker 3: She opens her desk drawer, reached in, pulls out a
- 6:45Speaker 3: full size bottle of wine. Okay, apparently it's the screw
- 6:49Speaker 3: top was already there was this one. So she cracks
- 6:53Speaker 3: open this bottle of wine.
- 6:53Speaker 2: I'm assuming you know she didn't.
- 6:55Speaker 3: It was a screwtop there, so you know, but before,
- 6:59Speaker 3: before this hr person could even process it, she tips
- 7:03Speaker 3: it back and just started chugging the wine.
- 7:07Speaker 5: Right, this is post firing.
- 7:08Speaker 3: Oh yeah, this is this is her rebellious aspired me.
- 7:11Speaker 3: I'm going to get drunk on the job.
- 7:12Speaker 4: You could have done this on the parking lot, and
- 7:14Speaker 4: she wanted to do this.
- 7:15Speaker 3: So she Yeah, she chugs the whole thing. That's a lot. Yeah,
- 7:23Speaker 3: in college, there's a story. Okay, so that's a lot.
- 7:28Speaker 3: She then pulls out a second one.
- 7:30Speaker 5: Oh all right, she had a collection in there.
- 7:32Speaker 3: And did the same thing. So she now as people
- 7:35Speaker 3: we're standing there, she's just being rebellious, and she drinks
- 7:39Speaker 3: the second bottle of wine, and you know, just right
- 7:42Speaker 3: in front of this person, right in the middle of
- 7:44Speaker 3: the office. The lady says, it's so surreal that for
- 7:47Speaker 3: a second I didn't even I didn't even know what
- 7:50Speaker 3: to do, you know, I didn't know how to stop her,
- 7:53Speaker 3: didn't know if she should call security or just let
- 7:55Speaker 3: it go. But they ended up calling the police. I
- 7:56Speaker 3: assume two bottles of two bottles of wine quickly, uh,
- 8:00Speaker 3: would make you pretty belligerent if you're angry. And by
- 8:03Speaker 3: the time the cops arrived, she had completely passed out well,
- 8:09Speaker 3: and so she was unresponsive, glassy eyd, staring into space,
- 8:12Speaker 3: and it got serious enough they had to call an ambulance.
- 8:15Speaker 5: Oh my god.
- 8:16Speaker 2: So you think the.
- 8:16Speaker 3: Story would end there, But later they had to go
- 8:20Speaker 3: through some of her company email and found that she
- 8:22Speaker 3: had lots of stranger dozens of notes she had written herself,
- 8:26Speaker 3: plotting stuff against the employees, plotting revenge, slotting revenge on
- 8:31Speaker 3: different employees.
- 8:32Speaker 5: So, oh my gosh. Yeah, the least they caught her
- 8:34Speaker 5: before in the oven.
- 8:35Speaker 3: Right, I just you know, some I think it's a
- 8:37Speaker 3: arresting how sometimes just people just like don't like they
- 8:42Speaker 3: might actually be you start out good and then something
- 8:45Speaker 3: happens and they go off the rest. Clearly, if someone's
- 8:48Speaker 3: bringing bottles of wine to work, there's like this multiple
- 8:53Speaker 3: something you missed on the way in, something the manager's overlooking.
- 8:57Speaker 5: Yeah, and some people don't mind burning bridges. Well I'm
- 9:00Speaker 5: out of here.
- 9:01Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 9:01Speaker 3: I remember the guy who was called sleeping in the
- 9:04Speaker 3: story about the guys sleeping on the job behind. Yeah,
- 9:07Speaker 3: like he rips his shirt off and goes hulk on
- 9:10Speaker 3: everyone on the way out, screaming, and everyone like, well,
- 9:13Speaker 3: have come this far.
- 9:13Speaker 5: I'm not coming back.
- 9:14Speaker 2: This is not a why wy why? This is a
- 9:15Speaker 2: chug chug chug event.
- 9:16Speaker 3: You know, it's like, actually, I actually you know, uh,
- 9:21Speaker 3: this one actually kind of hurt my soul a little bit.
- 9:23Speaker 3: It's like, wow, you know, that's just not a great
- 9:24Speaker 3: place for someone to be. Yeah, you know she did,
- 9:28Speaker 3: and man, but you know what these what some of
- 9:33Speaker 3: these hr people face.
- 9:34Speaker 2: You know, it did strike me early in the deal.
- 9:37Speaker 3: As you get, as you get bigger, you start growing
- 9:39Speaker 3: your organization, you you.
- 9:43Speaker 2: You have these.
- 9:46Speaker 3: HR issues, and they just become you know, it's just
- 9:49Speaker 3: big people's lives, you know. I mean, who knows what happens,
- 9:53Speaker 3: but and and the HR is constantly intervening, and you know,
- 9:57Speaker 3: this drama over here, that drama, this person's struggle with
- 10:01Speaker 3: this or this, you know, maybe some pressure outside or
- 10:05Speaker 3: conflict internal.
- 10:07Speaker 2: You know, it's all kinds of things, you know.
- 10:09Speaker 3: That's HR folks are just absolute heroes for all they
- 10:12Speaker 3: have to deal.
- 10:13Speaker 4: With, right, I mean, I'm just thinking she probably didn't
- 10:19Speaker 4: maybe have money for an uber, so she's like, there's
- 10:20Speaker 4: only one way I'm getting out of it, and it
- 10:24Speaker 4: has sirens on top, but it's either a police car
- 10:27Speaker 4: or an ambulance.
- 10:28Speaker 5: Yeah, it's free, right, free right, get carried out?
- 10:30Speaker 6: Yeah?
- 10:31Speaker 3: Yeah? Yeah, Oh my god. All right. A while back,
- 10:36Speaker 3: I had an intern who to this day still stands
- 10:39Speaker 3: out as the worst I've ever supervised. We've heard some
- 10:44Speaker 3: bad intern stories.
- 10:45Speaker 4: Interns are those fun stories though.
- 10:48Speaker 3: The Yeah, just speaking of interns, Yeah, you know, I'm
- 10:52Speaker 3: always blown away now by I think this story. I
- 10:56Speaker 3: think I read it before it was before we came on.
- 10:59Speaker 3: It's a little bit of that kind of entitlement, you know, Hey,
- 11:02Speaker 3: I do this.
- 11:03Speaker 2: I don't do that.
- 11:04Speaker 3: You know, you're finding that a lot and gen Zers
- 11:08Speaker 3: is resistance to that's not my job to flexibility.
- 11:12Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, that's the whole definitely.
- 11:15Speaker 3: Yeah. Yeah, Like so from day one he was off.
- 11:19Speaker 3: You know, he wasn't shy, he wasn't shy. He was inappropriate,
- 11:24Speaker 3: constantly asking how much money that I made? So how
- 11:29Speaker 3: much money you make?
- 11:29Speaker 4: Bro?
- 11:30Speaker 2: Tell me how much money you make?
- 11:31Speaker 3: And not just once or twice, he'd bring it up
- 11:33Speaker 3: all the time. We'd be in the middle of working
- 11:35Speaker 3: on something and he'd just slight drop. So seriously, how
- 11:38Speaker 3: much money do you make? You get that from Like
- 11:42Speaker 3: if you if you watch enough social media and you
- 11:44Speaker 3: watch these things where there's actually these guys who just
- 11:47Speaker 3: walk up to people success.
- 11:48Speaker 2: Hey, how much money do you make?
- 11:49Speaker 5: A yeah, I just like guess, uh yeah, tell me
- 11:52Speaker 5: how you you know?
- 11:53Speaker 3: And of course they target people who look like they
- 11:55Speaker 3: have money and then get them to tell their story.
- 11:57Speaker 5: Right, but still a little bit different.
- 11:59Speaker 3: Not in work bro right, And I'm not sure it
- 12:03Speaker 3: was for the same educational reasons the guy on that
- 12:07Speaker 3: does it, you know, on the street going.
- 12:10Speaker 4: I mean, when you're an intern, like your job is
- 12:12Speaker 4: to kind of like learn, absorb and like, I mean,
- 12:16Speaker 4: we'll kind of just shut up in color and to
- 12:19Speaker 4: be out asking questions to your potential future.
- 12:23Speaker 5: Yeah, I think what salary should I aim for here
- 12:25Speaker 5: in the next couple of years.
- 12:27Speaker 2: Fifteen years from now, when I'm your age. I just
- 12:28Speaker 2: want to make sure if I'm making.
- 12:30Speaker 5: Yeah, exactly, it'll be the stand and trap how much.
- 12:34Speaker 3: It's not asking how much has that person that started
- 12:36Speaker 3: last year? How much are they making?
- 12:38Speaker 2: So how much do you make?
- 12:39Speaker 3: When I gave him assignments, he looked me dead in
- 12:42Speaker 3: the eye and say, that's not my job. I don't.
- 12:44Speaker 3: Sometimes we wonder how people why people stick with these people?
- 12:48Speaker 3: Imagine hearing that from an interim. And then it escalated.
- 12:51Speaker 3: He started asking personal questions so out of line. Almost
- 12:54Speaker 3: couldn't believe that he said it out loud. One day,
- 12:57Speaker 3: out of nowhere, he blurts, so do you like adult movies?
- 13:04Speaker 3: At that point, I was documenting everything. I finally reported
- 13:07Speaker 3: himTo HR and they didn't even hesitate. He was out
- 13:10Speaker 3: of the internship program immediately. I thought that was the
- 13:13Speaker 3: end of it, but no, you know, he now goes
- 13:15Speaker 3: around telling people are we.
- 13:17Speaker 2: Win this life?
- 13:19Speaker 3: Oh don't we get that a lot from these folks
- 13:22Speaker 3: who like really crash and burn and they've got like
- 13:25Speaker 3: really weird odd behavior, you know, not great productive behavior. Yes,
- 13:30Speaker 3: and then they're angry when they're like terminated somehow, it's
- 13:35Speaker 3: not their fault. You know.
- 13:36Speaker 4: It's almost like when the culmination of the bad thing
- 13:39Speaker 4: finally happens. It's almost like they tag the person next
- 13:43Speaker 4: to them when it happens. It's like burned in their friend.
- 13:47Speaker 4: You were there when the bad thing happened, so you're
- 13:50Speaker 4: the bad juju. Yeah, yeah, my life was great up there.
- 13:53Speaker 3: Tell you, I was able to ask any question I
- 13:55Speaker 3: wanted up until you know.
- 13:57Speaker 4: You said and told me how much money you made.
- 13:59Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 13:59Speaker 3: Right, there is a need. There is a need and
- 14:03Speaker 3: for in fact, I think we're actually doing some here
- 14:06Speaker 3: in another month, for like just pure business etique training, right,
- 14:10Speaker 3: like you know, how to how to how to just
- 14:14Speaker 3: how to be a pro, to profession, how to be
- 14:16Speaker 3: a pro, how to be a normal you know, and
- 14:19Speaker 3: it's really needed, you know, it's I get it all
- 14:22Speaker 3: the time, and you know, sometimess I don't know that
- 14:26Speaker 3: I'm disappointed, but when I see young folks in in
- 14:30Speaker 3: you know, coming up in their career and watching them
- 14:34Speaker 3: struggle with you know how to act, you know what's appropriate,
- 14:39Speaker 3: you know, and and I'm not trying to create some
- 14:41Speaker 3: type of crazy, over controlling culture. But there is just
- 14:45Speaker 3: a way to act that's just like positive juju into
- 14:47Speaker 3: your organization. That comes to professionalism and knowing how to act,
- 14:51Speaker 3: you know. And so and that's not my job is
- 14:57Speaker 3: never a good thing to say when you're an intern.
- 14:59Speaker 2: I don't even I like it.
- 15:00Speaker 3: I don't care who you are in an organization. If
- 15:02Speaker 3: you looked at me and said I'm not that's not
- 15:03Speaker 3: my job.
- 15:04Speaker 5: Like bro, the opposite where I feel like your positive
- 15:07Speaker 5: impact when you're on your culture, when you're able to like, oh,
- 15:09Speaker 5: I'll take that on. I'll help support whatever way I can,
- 15:13Speaker 5: instead of to be like ah, no, no, thanks.
- 15:15Speaker 4: Well, And there's such a difference between that's not my
- 15:17Speaker 4: job and setting up boundaries and saying hey, like, this
- 15:20Speaker 4: is my priority right now and if you want me
- 15:22Speaker 4: to be able to do that, I can, but would
- 15:25Speaker 4: you like me to let this other priority go so

- 15:29Speaker 4: setting boundaries, But then I say that's not my job.

- 16:28Speaker 3: You sure?
- 16:28Speaker 5: I think Dollan has some stories of hell because he's Allen.
- 16:32Speaker 3: You got Dylan, You've got some story?
- 16:33Speaker 4: Oh this is perfect because about I don't know, maybe
- 16:37Speaker 4: two months ago, right before I got the invite to
- 16:40Speaker 4: be here, I was having dinner with a friend of
- 16:42Speaker 4: mine who they were an owner of a franchise that
- 16:47Speaker 4: sells cookies and it rhymes with stumble. Oh, and uh,
- 16:52Speaker 4: they had a few differentations.
- 16:53Speaker 3: Well, by the way, I love it, I love bumble,
- 16:55Speaker 3: I love stumble cookie.
- 16:56Speaker 4: Yeah, and so they have the they recently sold, but
- 17:01Speaker 4: they had multiple different locations and I can I mean,
- 17:05Speaker 4: this lives rent free in my mind. This story. They
- 17:09Speaker 4: had an employee we'll call him Richard, and Richard was
- 17:14Speaker 4: showing some inappropriate media to his co workers when they
- 17:18Speaker 4: immediately went to the manager to say, hey, like, this
- 17:21Speaker 4: is what Richard's doing the new guys kind of being
- 17:23Speaker 4: a little weird. And so obviously they let Richard go
- 17:27Speaker 4: because Richard's doing some inappropriate things. They walking out to
- 17:33Speaker 4: his car and he's kicking and screaming and not wanting
- 17:36Speaker 4: to leave, demanding an explanation. But then they say, hey,
- 17:39Speaker 4: come back on Monday for your final check and whatnot
- 17:43Speaker 4: and we'll send you on your way. And so he
- 17:47Speaker 4: didn't want to come back in person because he was embarrassed.
- 17:49Speaker 4: He was completely to imagine, Yeah, but they said, no,
- 17:54Speaker 4: you need to come in person because we had like
- 17:56Speaker 4: the paper check for you to just come in. And
- 17:58Speaker 4: so this and completely covered in black with a ski mask, sunglasses, everything,
- 18:05Speaker 4: walks in and goes up to the counter and he
- 18:09Speaker 4: doesn't say a word, like he's just standing there and
- 18:12Speaker 4: the person here, yeah, like can I help you? Like, yeah,
- 18:16Speaker 4: do you need it? There wasn't wouldn't respond. And so
- 18:19Speaker 4: after about twenty seconds of just like no response from
- 18:22Speaker 4: this man and all in black, who's probably scaring her,
- 18:25Speaker 4: she goes back to the manager says, there's a guy,
- 18:27Speaker 4: I am black. I think it's Richard. It looks like
- 18:32Speaker 4: Richard's He won't respond. I think he probably came in
- 18:36Speaker 4: for his check. And so they go out and like, Richard,
- 18:40Speaker 4: is that you nothing, won't say anything, and so he
- 18:43Speaker 4: finally on a piece of paper, rights, I am the
- 18:47Speaker 4: twin brother of Richard. Okay, this is Ricky, and so
- 18:52Speaker 4: he passes them the note this yeah, yeah right, and
- 18:56Speaker 4: I'm the twins so yeah, if if you really are
- 18:59Speaker 4: the twin brother, Richard like, we can't give you the check,
- 19:02Speaker 4: and you give me your ID, and after you know everything,
- 19:07Speaker 4: he finally gives him the ID and uh, they passed
- 19:10Speaker 4: the check. He goes out, But that's not the end
- 19:13Speaker 4: of the story. He keeps coming back to kind of
- 19:17Speaker 4: taunt and uh, he starts like riding things on the
- 19:20Speaker 4: windows and kind of vandalism and things of that nature.
- 19:23Speaker 4: And then they get like a I don't know if
- 19:29Speaker 4: it was something legally where he could come around anymore,
- 19:34Speaker 4: but like a restraining order kind of thing. Yeah, you
- 19:37Speaker 4: think it's over, but then he starts doing door dash orders.
- 19:43Speaker 3: I got your food and he's no, so he's ordering
- 19:45Speaker 3: from this place.
- 19:46Speaker 4: Yeah he is.
- 19:47Speaker 3: Now he.
- 19:49Speaker 4: Is no longer strategy the twin of Richard, and he's
- 19:53Speaker 4: no longer this black mass man. He's just richer and like, Richard,
- 19:56Speaker 4: you can't be here, and he keeps taking these door
- 19:59Speaker 4: dash orders and finally Richard go on, Richard, you can't
- 20:02Speaker 4: be anywhere Richard, and they're like screaming at him and
- 20:04Speaker 4: just like shoot, shoot, get out of here, Richard. And so
- 20:06Speaker 4: now he's kind of a I mean I've heard that
- 20:10Speaker 4: he doesn't come around anymore. But yeah, pretty wild story.
- 20:13Speaker 5: Dang, that's crazy. Yeah, so he finally stopped coming around.
- 20:17Speaker 4: Yeah maybe, And they.
- 20:19Speaker 5: Never confirmed if it was actually him or a twin brother,
- 20:22Speaker 5: because with the ID like to just say brother's yeah,
- 20:26Speaker 5: I don't know.
- 20:26Speaker 3: Yah, don't.
- 20:27Speaker 2: Yeah, I think some people lose.
- 20:29Speaker 3: It's kind of crazy. The stories that we get have
- 20:31Speaker 3: people who like when they lose their job and they
- 20:35Speaker 3: should have yeah, right, and they it just reveals is
- 20:40Speaker 3: like there must there's like this, there's like a different
- 20:43Speaker 3: person right under the surface that they're just trying to conceal. Yeah,
- 20:47Speaker 3: and then this comes you know, it just comes out. Yeah,
- 20:50Speaker 3: And it happens a lot in retail because you know,
- 20:54Speaker 3: you know, retail just has such high demand for people
- 20:57Speaker 3: that's so hard to find.
- 20:58Speaker 4: You know, well, you just and I feel like, you know,
- 21:02Speaker 4: when you're a kid and you're like playing hide and
- 21:04Speaker 4: seek and you're hiding and so on finances like hey,
- 21:06Speaker 4: I see you, you're right there, and you'd like don't move,
- 21:09Speaker 4: and like I see you, you can move, and you're
- 21:12Speaker 4: still not moving, Like, oh, I don't want to be caught.
- 21:14Speaker 4: I feel like that kind of happens when people fall
- 21:17Speaker 4: into this I don't know, fantasy land of like this
- 21:22Speaker 4: lie and they just don't want to let go of
- 21:24Speaker 4: it because it's painful to realize, like I got caught. Yeah,
- 21:29Speaker 4: you know.
- 21:29Speaker 3: Humility embarrassment Humility are really powerful, really powerful emotions embarrassment
- 21:39Speaker 3: that stop people from being able to take accountability, to
- 21:43Speaker 3: tell lies and to do other things. That is such
- 21:46Speaker 3: a tough emotion.
- 21:48Speaker 2: So Nathan, what's up? What you got?
- 21:50Speaker 3: Brother? All right?
- 21:51Speaker 5: Don't have any of my own like down as I
- 21:54Speaker 5: think these are just from Reddit. So all right. As
- 21:58Speaker 5: an office manager, I once high a new employee. On
- 22:01Speaker 5: his very first day, he was told to fill out
- 22:03Speaker 5: his new higher paperwork. Pretty standard stuff I put. I
- 22:07Speaker 5: put him into an office. He came back a little
- 22:09Speaker 5: while later. He handed me the forms. I scanned him
- 22:12Speaker 5: over to HR like usual, and about twenty minutes later
- 22:15Speaker 5: I get an HR or. I get a call from
- 22:17Speaker 5: the HR rep and the HR rep is laughing and
- 22:20Speaker 5: she tells me that he's filled out his name in
- 22:22Speaker 5: all the forms as Batman. So I sit Batman down.
- 22:28Speaker 5: I sent him down. I tell him to redo the
- 22:29Speaker 5: paved work with his actual legal name. He nods, no problem,
- 22:34Speaker 5: sorry about that. He fills out again, and he hands
- 22:37Speaker 5: it back and it says Batman. It doesn't say that
- 22:40Speaker 5: Bruce went No, still a Batman.
- 22:42Speaker 2: He just didn't get ways that would have been good?
- 22:44Speaker 3: That would that would have been good.
- 22:45Speaker 5: Yeah. By the end of the day, I had him
- 22:47Speaker 5: on a call with HR where they explained very directly.
- 22:51Speaker 5: If he does not fill out this paperwork correctly, he
- 22:53Speaker 5: would not have the job, and it should have ended there.
- 22:56Speaker 5: But it did not. From that day forward, it was
- 22:59Speaker 5: one ridiculous thing after another with this guy. At least
- 23:01Speaker 5: once a week he'd be in my office for some
- 23:04Speaker 5: weird issue. Then one morning he comes in completely serious
- 23:07Speaker 5: and announces that he's officially legally changed his name to Batman.
- 23:12Speaker 5: So he saw that stame true? Yeah, so fine, we'll
- 23:15Speaker 5: give him a fresh, W four new paperwork. He fills
- 23:19Speaker 5: it out again, probably signing Batman. Yeah so, But then
- 23:23Speaker 5: HR comes back and says, hey, we need proof of
- 23:26Speaker 5: your name change for the system, like legal legal proof.
- 23:30Speaker 5: So he I told him he needs to provide documentation.
- 23:33Speaker 5: He said, no problem, I'll bring in tomorrow. And the
- 23:35Speaker 5: next day comes, and the next day and the next week.
- 23:38Speaker 5: Weeks go by, excuse after excuse, and he lost it.
- 23:41Speaker 5: He forgot it. It was at home. Finally we figure
- 23:44Speaker 5: out the truth. He never actually changed it at all.
- 23:46Speaker 5: He just wanted to be called Batman.
- 23:47Speaker 3: Yeah, bro, I get it, and I love that.
- 23:50Speaker 5: Part of me is on his side a little bit.
- 23:51Speaker 2: Yeah no, I mean, if you could be called Batman. Yeah,
- 23:54Speaker 2: you know, Dylan, what if.
- 23:56Speaker 3: You could just like tell people just call me Superman brom.
- 23:59Speaker 5: Super confusing because I guess they know his name in
- 24:02Speaker 5: the interview process, like is he on LinkedIn as Batman?
- 24:05Speaker 3: I just got to tell you some of these stories, man,
- 24:07Speaker 3: there's like there's a sign so early, and they don't
- 24:11Speaker 3: like just cut, you know, they just just keep going.
- 24:15Speaker 3: And you're like, have you ever seen that that TikTok
- 24:18Speaker 3: where the guy goes to interviews online and he's just
- 24:23Speaker 3: like like one of him. He's like sitting at a
- 24:25Speaker 3: drive through eating and he's like, no, no, no, I'm not
- 24:28Speaker 3: at a drive through. And she's like you're clearly at
- 24:30Speaker 3: a drive through and he's like, no, no, no, I'm not
- 24:31Speaker 3: at a drive through.
- 24:32Speaker 5: I'm a friend.
- 24:32Speaker 3: Try and don't a stun Like how long they They're
- 24:35Speaker 3: like no, you aren't, and they have, you know, trying
- 24:38Speaker 3: to get back to the interview, and I'm like, some.
- 24:41Speaker 5: People are just desperate to hire.
- 24:42Speaker 3: I guess it just really speaks to how hard it
- 24:46Speaker 3: is to find great talent. You know, You're just like, wow,
- 24:50Speaker 3: if you're willing to stay on the phone after you know,
- 24:55Speaker 3: and this guy does crazy stunts up with him.
- 24:57Speaker 5: And maybe he's the mass mass crusader and accounting and
- 25:00Speaker 5: maybe having the best I don't know.
- 25:02Speaker 4: I mean, we're just taught ever since we're little, like
- 25:04Speaker 4: don't judge a book by its cover, like like give people,
- 25:07Speaker 4: you know, chance street others like you'd like to be treated.
- 25:10Speaker 4: And in balancing that with like this dude things he's Batman.
- 25:15Speaker 3: So all right, what's up?
- 25:17Speaker 2: All right?
- 25:18Speaker 5: Second one, last one for the day. At a small
- 25:20Speaker 5: company I worked for, we hired a receptionist, let's call
- 25:23Speaker 5: her Jin. At first, she came across as friendly, maybe
- 25:26Speaker 5: a little bit quirky, but I started noticing some small
- 25:29Speaker 5: lies in her stories. Nothing huge at first, just weird
- 25:32Speaker 5: details that didn't really quite add up, but I didn't
- 25:34Speaker 5: really think much of it. One day, HR sent out
- 25:37Speaker 5: an all staff email, and it said that Jin's husband
- 25:40Speaker 5: had passed away, and so naturally everyone had felt awful.
- 25:43Speaker 5: We collected money, said flowers. We gave her two full
- 25:47Speaker 5: weeks off for bereavement, and when she came back, she
- 25:50Speaker 5: really looked apart. She was shaken, she was quiet. You know,
- 25:53Speaker 5: the whole office was walking on eggshells around her. A
- 25:56Speaker 5: few weeks later, I happened to be covering the desk
- 25:59Speaker 5: for her when the phone and I answered, is a
- 26:00Speaker 5: man's voice on the other end and said, this is Frank,
- 26:04Speaker 5: Jen's husband. Uh, and I froze the Frank, the husband
- 26:09Speaker 5: that we all thought was gone, was on the other line.
- 26:11Speaker 4: Yeah, he resurrected.
- 26:12Speaker 2: She immediately was like, it's a miracle, it's a live.
- 26:16Speaker 5: So then later over drinks with Hr, I'm telling them
- 26:19Speaker 5: the whole story, and I'm expecting shocked in awe, and
- 26:22Speaker 5: instead they kind of shrugged. They already knew. It turns
- 26:25Speaker 5: out that Jen had faked her own husband's i'm a
- 26:29Speaker 5: living to get extra vacation time. And the only reason
- 26:32Speaker 5: that she got away with it was because she threatened
- 26:34Speaker 5: to expose the company president's affairs of anybody pushed back.
- 26:40Speaker 5: So it was an inside job.
- 26:42Speaker 3: Yeah, the drama stacks.
- 26:45Speaker 5: Yeah, so it was just multiple layers of some lies,
- 26:49Speaker 5: some drama. And also it's a big cover up, so
- 26:52Speaker 5: it's a multi problem.
- 26:54Speaker 3: And Jen was a pro it was collected information to well,
- 26:59Speaker 3: I would make her at least give them money back.
- 27:01Speaker 5: Yeah, people actually raised took up some collections around the office.
- 27:05Speaker 3: Yeah, that's like the backbreaker for me is like if
- 27:08Speaker 3: you're an organization and you're like, like.
- 27:10Speaker 5: I gave Frank twenty bucks. Yeah, yeah, yeah, just crazy.
- 27:14Speaker 5: I just don't understand.
- 27:15Speaker 3: How do you have a bereavement policy yet? That's a
- 27:18Speaker 3: really interesting thing. No, And I've had a you know,
- 27:22Speaker 3: over the years, I've had multiple that happened, and and
- 27:27Speaker 3: we had one of our employees lose his wife another husband,
- 27:33Speaker 3: you know, and it's just the bereavement, the bereavement policies
- 27:38Speaker 3: that comes standard, right, Yeah, that's exactly right.
- 27:40Speaker 2: So it was just nuts when you know, you're faced with.
- 27:47Speaker 3: It and you're like this bereavement policy, what he gets
- 27:53Speaker 3: seven days? You know, it's like yeah, yeah, you're just
- 27:56Speaker 3: like I if my child died, I would you you better?
- 28:00Speaker 2: I'll see you next year, bro, Yeah, I'll be a fun.
- 28:02Speaker 5: I mean yeah.
- 28:04Speaker 2: And so I don't know, I just I think about that.
- 28:09Speaker 3: We really extended ours and and and just went full
- 28:12Speaker 3: blown where you know, and I think we just kind
- 28:17Speaker 3: of crafted it to instead of having the days we
- 28:20Speaker 3: just did, there's just a lot of trust implemented into
- 28:24Speaker 3: the processes, like we're going to give them the days
- 28:27Speaker 3: they need, right, not you.
- 28:29Speaker 2: Get twenty one days and by the way, on the
- 28:30Speaker 2: twenty second.
- 28:31Speaker 4: Day, you gotta be back, yeah, because I mean if
- 28:35Speaker 4: they come back, they might be back physically.
- 28:37Speaker 3: But yeah, I mean, yeah, it's just you know, it's
- 28:41Speaker 3: it's just I think it's just one of the responsibilities
- 28:43Speaker 3: as CEO as a company you just take on. It's like,
- 28:45Speaker 3: if I'm going to build a culture in which everyone
- 28:47Speaker 3: loves to work here, right, and we love each other,
- 28:49Speaker 3: and we're after.
- 28:50Speaker 2: This common vision.
- 28:51Speaker 3: If someone's life has changed, it altered in such a
- 28:53Speaker 3: terrible way, right, I mean, how do I approach that
- 28:59Speaker 3: with some rubbers that way of you know, hey, you know,
- 29:03Speaker 3: so sorry you lost your loved one, your kid, your husband,
- 29:06Speaker 3: whatever it is. We're going to give you five days
- 29:10Speaker 3: and after that, you know, we're off. Took having to
- 29:12Speaker 3: pay you hr. People probably think I'm crazy, but it's just,
- 29:16Speaker 3: you know, our mentality after facing that was like we
- 29:21Speaker 3: there is no one size fits all here. Some people
- 29:23Speaker 3: need to get back to work. Some people like this
- 29:25Speaker 3: is how I, you know, this is how I this
- 29:28Speaker 3: is how I move forward. And others are like I
- 29:31Speaker 3: just want to lay in bed for you know, six months.
- 29:34Speaker 2: And you know you gotta be okay with either.
- 29:37Speaker 4: Yeah, whatever. Everyone deals with it differently.
- 29:39Speaker 3: Yeah, I think it's harder, certainly harder when you become
- 29:42Speaker 3: a massive organization. You know, certainly have much much harder.
- 29:45Speaker 4: Some many moving pieces.
- 29:47Speaker 3: But personally, you know, where we're at in our and
- 29:50Speaker 3: our journey is it's just like a really good place.
- 29:53Speaker 3: You know, it's a really good place. Is as a
- 29:55Speaker 3: CEO say, you're able to it's just you're able to
- 29:59Speaker 3: turn knobs and effect culture. And I love that part.
- 30:02Speaker 2: So yeah, all.
- 30:03Speaker 3: Right, guys, I want to wrap up.
- 30:07Speaker 2: But before we did, I just wanted to this. I
- 30:08Speaker 2: wanted to remind.
- 30:12Speaker 3: Remind us that we've got this ten thousand dollars contests
- 30:16Speaker 3: that that I got on that is absolutely trying to win. Yes, uh,
- 30:21Speaker 3: he's going to rewrite his story and send us.
- 30:22Speaker 2: A picture of Batman.
- 30:24Speaker 3: But that's if you win this, we will like put
- 30:28Speaker 3: this Batman dude up.
- 30:29Speaker 2: But ye, do this whole video montage. We should do,
- 30:32Speaker 2: we should, we should.
- 30:33Speaker 3: Okay, here's what we have to do.
- 30:35Speaker 5: This couple opportunities.
- 30:36Speaker 3: We're gonna let's put together a video of that story
- 30:39Speaker 3: of like this dude. Constantly we're in a Batman costume
- 30:43Speaker 3: and word, Yeah, we have a Batman around here?
- 30:46Speaker 2: Have you ever seen that? No, we have an employee he.
- 30:49Speaker 3: Likes to put on the bat.
- 30:50Speaker 5: Is he batman?
- 30:50Speaker 4: Yeah?
- 30:51Speaker 3: Well, in some of the events we've had he's been batyuddy.
- 30:55Speaker 3: But we've got this, we've got this contest going on.
- 30:57Speaker 3: We've got about twenty four episodes in a season. The
- 31:00Speaker 3: best story, if you submit it gets ten thousand, will
- 31:03Speaker 3: win ten thousand dollars. So you can go on our website,
- 31:05Speaker 3: the badhire dot com, go over to submit, check it out,
- 31:09Speaker 3: to go through a process of submitting, answering a bunch
- 31:11Speaker 3: of questions, check out some rules there, and submit the story.
- 31:16Speaker 3: If it's a good story, you'll end up on the show.
- 31:18Speaker 3: So you get to hear it. And if it's if
- 31:20Speaker 3: it's really cool, you know, producers will potentially reach out
- 31:24Speaker 3: to you and they say, hey, do you want to
- 31:25Speaker 3: come on the show.
- 31:26Speaker 2: We'll either phone you in you know, or.
- 31:30Speaker 3: Video in or get you to get here, and if
- 31:34Speaker 3: we do that, then we'll pay for you to get here,
- 31:36Speaker 3: and then or you could end up just winning the
