Latest / Birdland Territory / CRUSHING series loss to the Braves as O's offense goes silent
Transcript
- 0:07Speaker 1: Those fans in a season of frustration. There was more
- 0:10Speaker 1: on Sunday afternoon in downtown Baltimore. The Oils had the
- 0:14Speaker 1: bases loaded trying to win the game in the bottom
- 0:16Speaker 1: of the tenth against Atlanta. They couldn't do it, and
- 0:19Speaker 1: they lose to the Braves three to two in eleven.
- 0:23Speaker 1: And we're with you for another edition of Birdland Territory, Steve,
- 0:26Speaker 1: tim and Brad and guys. Let's start with this stat
- 0:30Speaker 1: And I posted this on my substack about a week
- 0:33Speaker 1: or two ago going into Boston, and I went back
- 0:36Speaker 1: to June twenty second. I went back to that date
- 0:38Speaker 1: because the series that preceded that Dodger Stadium. Ironically enough,
- 0:44Speaker 1: the Oriel scored a bunch of runs won that series.
- 0:48Speaker 1: But in the three games series that have followed, the
- 0:51Speaker 1: offense keeps coming up short. One series, they've been really
- 0:56Speaker 1: good Kansas City. Here's the run down in order, going
- 1:01Speaker 1: back over nine series. Now at the Angels thirteen runs
- 1:06Speaker 1: against the Nats ten, White Sox eleven, at Cincy thirteen,
- 1:12Speaker 1: Cubs twelve, Houston twelve, Boston thirteen, Atlanta eleven. They're barely
- 1:20Speaker 1: getting four runs a game. Here's the really damning part
- 1:24Speaker 1: for the offense, the pitcher er and that span is
- 1:29Speaker 1: three nineteen. They are pitching as well as anybody in
- 1:34Speaker 1: that date that we just I arbitrarily picked. They're going
- 1:37Speaker 1: back to when they kind of stopped scoring and they're
- 1:40Speaker 1: fourteen and thirteen, So seventeen and ten was really what
- 1:44Speaker 1: was needed and they'd be right there. So this was,
- 1:48Speaker 1: in a microcosm, this is what we've been seeing too
- 1:50Speaker 1: much of for about a month now.
- 1:53Speaker 2: Yeah, it's unfortunate because it was kind of the part
- 1:56Speaker 2: of this team that you just didn't expect to struggle
- 1:59Speaker 2: at all. Figure they're going to score runs, and you know,
- 2:02Speaker 2: the starting pitching staff was kind of what's going to
- 2:04Speaker 2: happen there?
- 2:04Speaker 3: Where's the bullpen going to be? The defense?
- 2:07Speaker 2: All these other question marks that you weren't sure, But
- 2:09Speaker 2: the offense was the one thing that was supposed to
- 2:11Speaker 2: carry this team and really lead them to a lot
- 2:14Speaker 2: of wins. And it's just been a struggle with runners
- 2:17Speaker 2: in scoring position in particular with that stat there zero
- 2:20Speaker 2: for ten today, four for twenty seven in the series,
- 2:23Speaker 2: and it's kind of been that's a microcosm of the season.
- 2:25Speaker 2: I feel like giving up two out runs and not
- 2:28Speaker 2: hitting with runners in scoring position have really been the
- 2:31Speaker 2: two biggest struggles for this team, and it's kind of
- 2:34Speaker 2: where they find themselves at today and this series, those
- 2:37Speaker 2: two things showed their glaring head there multiple times throughout.
- 2:41Speaker 4: It really hard to believe, guys, because Bradham with you
- 2:45Speaker 4: one hundred percent when you're heading into spring training and
- 2:48Speaker 4: we're previewing this Oriole season and what's good about well,
- 2:53Speaker 4: it starts with the lineup. You just expected that this
- 2:56Speaker 4: lineup was going to mash. I was high on the
- 2:59Speaker 4: start pitching and they've been even better. Bullpen was a
- 3:03Speaker 4: big question mark, but give the pen a ton of credit.
- 3:07Speaker 4: Man's it's two months now, over two months, the starting
- 3:10Speaker 4: pitching and the bullpen, they're both top ten and ERA
- 3:13Speaker 4: going back to May twenty second. But for the offense
- 3:17Speaker 4: to be struggling as much as they are, it's really
- 3:21Speaker 4: tough to watch.
- 3:22Speaker 5: And if you would have.
- 3:23Speaker 4: Told us prior to the season that they would get
- 3:26Speaker 4: this caliber of pitching, you would think their record would
- 3:29Speaker 4: be a heck of a lot better than it is
- 3:31Speaker 4: right now. But it's not the case that the offense
- 3:34Speaker 4: is really scuffling, and guys, look, they missed sadly Ruchman.
- 3:38Speaker 4: They missed Samuelbasio, Blaze, Alexander. Absolutely they do. But even
- 3:43Speaker 4: when those guys were in the lineup, you know, they
- 3:46Speaker 4: still weren't performing up to expectations that we had for
- 3:49Speaker 4: the offense heading into the season.
- 3:53Speaker 1: Today, the Orioles went six for thirty nine at bat
- 3:56Speaker 1: one extra base hit, oh for ten with runners and
- 3:59Speaker 1: scoring position twelve left eleven runs in the series against
- 4:04Speaker 1: It a good Atlanta pitching team, we know that, and
- 4:07Speaker 1: it was glaring in this series, particularly the catcher injuries
- 4:11Speaker 1: being with Appasio and Adley. You put those two in
- 4:13Speaker 1: that lineup and the Oils maybe win this series, but
- 4:16Speaker 1: they're not there. What can they do? They're doing the
- 4:18Speaker 1: best they can, and right now it's really tough because
- 4:23Speaker 1: Chadwick Trump and Sam Huffer are combined one for twenty
- 4:26Speaker 1: four the last seven games with fourteen strikeouts. So it's
- 4:30Speaker 1: just it was so bad that they put the winning
- 4:33Speaker 1: run base to give a chance there.
- 4:38Speaker 3: And I was gonna say, Steve, I was.
- 4:40Speaker 2: We talked about it briefly right before we got on here,
- 4:42Speaker 2: but I can count on maybe three fingers the time
- 4:46Speaker 2: seeing that an intentional walk to load the bases with
- 4:49Speaker 2: the game on the line with a one on lead.
- 4:51Speaker 2: I don't even know if I can say it three
- 4:52Speaker 2: times I saw it in my career, and to see
- 4:54Speaker 2: that today just really shows you that the Braves were
- 4:57Speaker 2: not scared. I mean they saw it as an how
- 5:00Speaker 2: there was no reason to throw any pitches near the
- 5:02Speaker 2: zone to the battle before. I think it was Holiday.
- 5:04Speaker 2: I forget who was up before, but yeah, so it
- 5:06Speaker 2: was just I mean, that is It's tough. It's they're
- 5:09Speaker 2: they're playing multiple, multiple men down, but it's just not
- 5:12Speaker 2: an excuse in the MLB, unfortunately, because everybody's playing with
- 5:15Speaker 2: injuries and nobody's gonna feel sorry for you.
- 5:17Speaker 3: So it's it was just one of those things.
- 5:19Speaker 2: I was unfortunate to be putting that spot there, but
- 5:21Speaker 2: they had their chance in the tenth inning. I mean,
- 5:23Speaker 2: they have nobody else to blame but themselves there with
- 5:26Speaker 2: basically loaded, nobody out, tie game, and you just can't
- 5:29Speaker 2: get that run across.
- 5:30Speaker 3: It's just frustrating. I know it was a good play by.
- 5:32Speaker 2: Olsen there to double up heat at first, but it's
- 5:35Speaker 2: just a frustrating loss and a frustrating weekend overall for
- 5:38Speaker 2: Orioles and I'm assuming the fans are just frustrated at
- 5:41Speaker 2: this point because they've seen it multiple times.
- 5:43Speaker 6: Now.
- 5:44Speaker 4: Yeah, it was tough, man, and it's so glaring because
- 5:48Speaker 4: we know that at the Rocherman and Samuel Bosio that's
- 5:51Speaker 4: the best catching tandem in baseball, and you lose them,
- 5:55Speaker 4: and now you have guys in there that were at
- 5:58Speaker 4: Triple A not that long ago, and Brad, you're one
- 6:01Speaker 4: hundred percent right.
- 6:02Speaker 5: The Braves they're like, all right.
- 6:04Speaker 4: Bring us sam off, like we'll take our chances with
- 6:06Speaker 4: him and a basis loaded situation. And obviously it ended
- 6:09Speaker 4: up paying all for him, but you're also right, they
- 6:13Speaker 4: had every opportunity to win that game in the tenth
- 6:16Speaker 4: inning Man and unfortunately Gunner Henderson, who shockingly every time
- 6:22Speaker 4: Kevin brings it up, Kevin Brown on mass and it's
- 6:25Speaker 4: amazing he hasn't had a walk off, and then you
- 6:27Speaker 4: know what's been such a great start to his career,
- 6:30Speaker 4: it's amazing he hasn't had a walkoff, and that that
- 6:33Speaker 4: was sort of a microcosm of Gunner season, right. He
- 6:36Speaker 4: hit the heck out of the ball and it was
- 6:38Speaker 4: just really unfortunate. It was a bang bang play, looked
- 6:42Speaker 4: like maybe Pete almost.
- 6:44Speaker 5: Got back in there. Maybe he did.
- 6:46Speaker 4: You know, it's an interesting review, but you gotta find
- 6:49Speaker 4: a way to push a run across when it's bases loaded,
- 6:51Speaker 4: nobody out, there's no excuse.
- 6:54Speaker 1: How do you see that one played appearance today for Gunner?
- 6:59Speaker 1: Because I have fans jumping Gunner because of the season
- 7:03Speaker 1: he's had that saying you didn't come through there. I
- 7:08Speaker 1: think you hit the ball hard, you can't steer it.
- 7:11Speaker 1: He didn't strike out into a double play. It was
- 7:14Speaker 1: a double play, but not a six four three.
- 7:18Speaker 4: I think that play on its surface, like, that's just
- 7:22Speaker 4: bad Luckick, what are you going to do now?
- 7:24Speaker 5: Now?
- 7:24Speaker 4: I understand the fans frustration, and obviously Gunner has not
- 7:29Speaker 4: had a lot of those signature moments that he's had
- 7:31Speaker 4: plenty of throughout his career in terms of runners in
- 7:35Speaker 4: scoring position, you know, high leverage spots. I kind of
- 7:39Speaker 4: just chalk that up to, Hey, the Braves are a
- 7:42Speaker 4: heck of a team, man, and the defense that they
- 7:45Speaker 4: had on display throughout that series was unbelievable, and I
- 7:50Speaker 4: just I chalk that up as just a bad luck
- 7:53Speaker 4: play for Gunner.
- 7:55Speaker 1: Exactly getting back to the catchers, Sam huffin were three
- 8:00Speaker 1: hundred and five career plate appearances, has a six eighty
- 8:03Speaker 1: eight mlbops. That's not bad, but he's four for thirty
- 8:07Speaker 1: three his time with the Ools this year that is bad.
- 8:11Speaker 1: One twenty one and Trump in two hundred and ten
- 8:14Speaker 1: plate appearances is five eighty five. So just by those
- 8:17Speaker 1: two stats, I mean huff is the better hitter in
- 8:21Speaker 1: brief career. Neither is hitting right now for the Orioles,
- 8:24Speaker 1: and unfortunately it's at a time when others aren't. It's magnified.
- 8:28Speaker 1: If yours were scoring six runs a game, Gunner was rolling,
- 8:31Speaker 1: Ward was rolling, they were all going. Then the catchers,
- 8:34Speaker 1: that wouldn't be as noticed. So it's tough on those guys.
- 8:37Speaker 1: They're getting a chance. Yeah, they are doing some nice
- 8:40Speaker 1: things defensively. And I'll say, oh, by the way, oh
- 8:42Speaker 1: for ten with runs in scoring position today, was not
- 8:45Speaker 1: all of them? Not you guys bad at right? They
- 8:47Speaker 1: scored two runs at eleven innings?
- 8:51Speaker 3: Yeah, no, I agree one hundred percent.
- 8:52Speaker 2: I think it's obviously because the play the game ended
- 8:55Speaker 2: with Huff at the plate. But those guys, they're NXT
- 8:58Speaker 2: when when you have those guys having come up because
- 9:00Speaker 2: of injuries. Those are not the guys you're expecting to
- 9:02Speaker 2: knock in the runs and to do all the damage.
- 9:05Speaker 2: They're gonna play a good defensive catcher, and that's mainly
- 9:07Speaker 2: what they're there for. It's a call a good game,
- 9:09Speaker 2: be a good defensive catcher, and if they get some
- 9:11Speaker 2: hits that that's icing on the cake. But at this point,
- 9:14Speaker 2: if you're expecting them to be the ones to win
- 9:16Speaker 2: the game, your team is just not. It's and it's
- 9:19Speaker 2: no slight to those guys. Like I said last episode,
- 9:21Speaker 2: I played with Chadwick Trump and Triple A. He's a
- 9:23Speaker 2: very good player and he deserves to be a major leaguer.
- 9:26Speaker 2: It's just those are the guys that you can't expect
- 9:29Speaker 2: to win you ball games. And it's just kind of
- 9:31Speaker 2: unfortunate that it came down to that.
- 9:32Speaker 1: Today it is and it's a frustrating weekend for oriole fans.
- 9:39Speaker 1: And a week ago we had them in by mode
- 9:46Speaker 1: two series later where they go one and two against Boston,
- 9:49Speaker 1: one and two against Atlanta. I said to somebody last
- 9:52Speaker 1: night in the press box, I would not want to
- 9:54Speaker 1: be Elias and his staff right now trying to figure
- 9:57Speaker 1: out what's the best play here as it's seems to
- 10:00Speaker 1: change every ten minutes.
- 10:02Speaker 4: It's gonna be a fascinating lead up. And I've been
- 10:05Speaker 4: saying that for weeks now, But geez, guys, you think
- 10:08Speaker 4: we're eight days away from the trade deadline and we
- 10:11Speaker 4: saw one move what was it yesterday or this morning
- 10:14Speaker 4: early getting trade from the Red Sox for mead from
- 10:18Speaker 4: the Nats. I think this is just gonna be a
- 10:22Speaker 4: flurry of activity in the last forty eight hours leading
- 10:26Speaker 4: up to the trade deadline because I think everyone's really
- 10:29Speaker 4: holding out. And heck, look at this upcoming series between
- 10:32Speaker 4: the Tigers and the Orioles, Like, whoever loses that series,
- 10:36Speaker 4: how does that factor into the calculus there?
- 10:39Speaker 5: And to add even.
- 10:40Speaker 4: More drama, Wednesday, guys, the projected starters Trevor Rodgers opposite
- 10:46Speaker 4: Trek scoobl it could be the final game for both
- 10:49Speaker 4: of those guys. It's gonna be a lot of fun
- 10:52Speaker 4: and craziness leading up to August third.
- 10:56Speaker 1: It certainly is. The Birds lose two of three to Atlanta,
- 10:58Speaker 1: they ans it that series at fifty one and fifty five.
- 11:02Speaker 1: Now onto Detroit for three games starting Monday night with
- 11:05Speaker 1: that Markue pitching matchup coming Wednesday, so that's going to
- 11:09Speaker 1: be an interesting series. Stick with us. We got a
- 11:12Speaker 1: lot more to do. This edition of Birdland Territory.
- 11:20Speaker 4: This next week is sure to be exciting as we're
- 11:22Speaker 4: close to the trade deadline. Are you heading to Detroit
- 11:25Speaker 4: to see Theo's play, Well, if you are, I would
- 11:28Speaker 4: suggest going Wednesday because, as we just mentioned, Trevor Rodgers
- 11:32Speaker 4: and Trek Scooble they're both scheduled to pitch. Make sure

- 12:43Speaker 5: Thank you, Sea Geek.
- 12:46Speaker 1: All right, thanks Tim, And you know you look at
- 12:48Speaker 1: this pitching. We mentioned the stat and want to put
- 12:51Speaker 1: it up again to give some props to this pitching staff.
- 12:55Speaker 1: Since that series we referenced, that's three nineteen TmrA, which
- 13:00Speaker 1: is crazy. So it feels like opportunities lost here, fourteen
- 13:04Speaker 1: and thirteen, two more wins sixteen eleven, yeah, really good,
- 13:08Speaker 1: seventeen and ten, So eighteen and nine they had a
- 13:10Speaker 1: chance to really run this thing. Now it all was
- 13:14Speaker 1: not lost here. There's two months to play, and remember
- 13:19Speaker 1: how fast it change when they want a few. So
- 13:22Speaker 1: they just got to go to Detroit and get it going.
- 13:26Speaker 1: You keep taking these gut punches, which I think is
- 13:28Speaker 1: taking it out of the fan base. Whether it will
- 13:31Speaker 1: eventually take it out of the team, We still have
- 13:33Speaker 1: several weeks to find that out.
- 13:36Speaker 3: Yeah, and I think you're right.
- 13:37Speaker 2: See, you just got to keep playing the games and
- 13:39Speaker 2: kind of see where you're at come this next week.
- 13:41Speaker 2: And it's just we've talked about this multiple times on
- 13:44Speaker 2: the show, but leading up to this trade deadline, it's
- 13:46Speaker 2: a it's an intricate puzzle with the Orioles. You have
- 13:48Speaker 2: so many pieces that are moving past this year. To me,
- 13:52Speaker 2: it's like it's at the point where I feel like,
- 13:54Speaker 2: with Trevor Rodgers, you either sign them to an extension
- 13:56Speaker 2: somehow this week if if you can get that done,
- 13:59Speaker 2: if not, you got to get the best deal for him,
- 14:00Speaker 2: because he is pitching at one of the highest levels
- 14:04Speaker 2: with anybody across baseball right now. I think they said
- 14:06Speaker 2: it's been seven or it was either seven or nine
- 14:08Speaker 2: straight starts of two runs or less. Name another guy
- 14:10Speaker 2: in the big leagues who has been pitching like that.
- 14:12Speaker 2: He's been unbelievable and he's gonna be one of.
- 14:14Speaker 3: The top guys.
- 14:15Speaker 2: And I think it's very interesting that he's facing school
- 14:18Speaker 2: ball on Wednesday, because I feel like both those guys
- 14:20Speaker 2: are gonna be on the move, and they're both highly
- 14:22Speaker 2: as of being lefty starters, they're both highly gonna be
- 14:25Speaker 2: solid after here. So it's an interesting week and I
- 14:28Speaker 2: just I keep it keeps coming back to the point
- 14:30Speaker 2: with me, with Trevor Rodgers is the biggest piece here.
- 14:32Speaker 2: They either got to extending past the season or they
- 14:35Speaker 2: got to kind of move on. And I hate to
- 14:37Speaker 2: say that the former player, but I just feel like
- 14:39Speaker 2: with the organization, it's you're just stuck at that crossroad
- 14:41Speaker 2: right now that there's really no other option in my eye.
- 14:46Speaker 4: I still just am so surprised and Steve we talked
- 14:49Speaker 4: about it Friday on the fan. I'm still so surprised
- 14:53Speaker 4: they have not reached out to Trevor Rodgers. It's very
- 14:56Speaker 4: puzzling to me. And you give Michael Isyas a ton
- 14:59Speaker 4: of credit. Locking up Kyle Bradish, Shane Bose, you got
- 15:03Speaker 4: two fifths into your lineup or excuse me, starting rotation?
- 15:06Speaker 4: Locked up long term? Roger seems like he wants to
- 15:09Speaker 4: be here, and look, I don't know what his asking
- 15:13Speaker 4: price is. I don't know if his agent would ask
- 15:15Speaker 4: for the moon, but it's certainly worth having a conversation
- 15:18Speaker 4: with him, and it's a really tough spot for this
- 15:22Speaker 4: team to be in because I would assume you're still
- 15:26Speaker 4: gonna have the qualifying offer because you're operating under the
- 15:29Speaker 4: CBA at least for a month until December first, and
- 15:33Speaker 4: then all signs point to them doing away with it.
- 15:35Speaker 4: So at worst you could offer him the qualifying offer,
- 15:39Speaker 4: but he would be someone that I would want to
- 15:41Speaker 4: consider locking up long term strongly, Brad.
- 15:45Speaker 1: I want to get your opinion on this, having played
- 15:47Speaker 1: in the majors and work with agents. David Rubinstein Friday,
- 15:51Speaker 1: the pressor for Bradish and paraphrasing, said something like anybody
- 15:56Speaker 1: that's interested in staying here, we want to talk to you.
- 16:01Speaker 1: Is it almost to the point now where despite the
- 16:03Speaker 1: public comments of Trevor, the whole world knows he wants
- 16:06Speaker 1: to stay, including the Orioles that his agent calls them
- 16:11Speaker 1: says here's here's what we would sign for. Let's talk
- 16:15Speaker 1: over the next twenty four hours and get this done. Yeah.
- 16:18Speaker 2: I mean, I think it's they agents are a representation
- 16:22Speaker 2: of the player, and I think if as much as
- 16:25Speaker 2: it's a difficult process to go through because he's right
- 16:28Speaker 2: at the edge of reagency and you want to get
- 16:30Speaker 2: your full value and all this stuff. But at the
- 16:33Speaker 2: end of the day, if he really did want to
- 16:34Speaker 2: stay with the Orioles, I'm reaching out to my agent
- 16:36Speaker 2: and be like, Hey, let's find out what the best
- 16:38Speaker 2: offer we can get for them, because I really want
- 16:40Speaker 2: to stay here. And the fact that he was on
- 16:42Speaker 2: air on Masson in the Boston series saying I want
- 16:45Speaker 2: to be here and I want to sign like I
- 16:47Speaker 2: want to be here long term, that speaks everything you
- 16:50Speaker 2: need to know. Because the fact that he said it
- 16:52Speaker 2: on air in the middle of a game, to me,
- 16:54Speaker 2: is like you never hear a player say that, especially
- 16:57Speaker 2: somebody who's as close to free agency, and somebody who's
- 16:59Speaker 2: pitch as well as he has been pitching, where his
- 17:02Speaker 2: value is just going off with every single start that
- 17:04Speaker 2: he makes. It's just I just don't seem it doesn't
- 17:08Speaker 2: seem like it should be that far fetched to get
- 17:11Speaker 2: a deal done, and I don't think it would take
- 17:12Speaker 2: that long, because I think both.
- 17:13Speaker 3: Sides are clearly interesting.
- 17:15Speaker 2: Like you're saying to me, it's kind of odd at
- 17:17Speaker 2: this point that there hasn't been at least some kind
- 17:19Speaker 2: of talks.
- 17:20Speaker 7: Because there's there's no downside because look, Michael Eiath could
- 17:25Speaker 7: approach his agent and theoretically, and I'm just making this up,
- 17:28Speaker 7: theoretically his agent could be asking for XYZ, asking for.
- 17:32Speaker 4: The moon, and it's just so ridiculous that it doesn't
- 17:35Speaker 4: make any sense for the Orioles to do so. But Okay,
- 17:39Speaker 4: no harm, no foul. You're having the conversation. You're you're
- 17:42Speaker 4: figuring out what you know he's searching for. And I understand,
- 17:48Speaker 4: you know, heading into this past offseason that it was
- 17:52Speaker 4: a difficult negotiation, right because all right, he was on
- 17:56Speaker 4: an insane eighteen start stretch last year.
- 17:59Speaker 5: Are you paying paying him off?
- 18:00Speaker 6: That?
- 18:01Speaker 4: Are you paying him off when he struggled when you
- 18:03Speaker 4: initially traded for him?
- 18:04Speaker 5: Who is the real Trevor Rodgers?
- 18:06Speaker 4: Then he got off to a great start this year,
- 18:08Speaker 4: then really struggled in the month. Man, he's been fantastic
- 18:12Speaker 4: over an eight start stretch. Now he's one of the
- 18:14Speaker 4: best starting pitchers in baseball in that stretch. So I
- 18:18Speaker 4: understand it's it's a little tricky, but you know, I
- 18:22Speaker 4: have the conversation, try to figure out, you know, what's
- 18:25Speaker 4: fair for both sides.
- 18:26Speaker 1: Yeah, I had a fan ask me this question. They said, Steve,
- 18:31Speaker 1: are you convinced there have been no talks or do
- 18:34Speaker 1: you think it's Trevor's way of saying there have been
- 18:37Speaker 1: no talks going anywhere? And I said, well, he's told
- 18:41Speaker 1: multiple outlets, including myself, and I've asked him a couple
- 18:44Speaker 1: of times this year there haven't been any talks. Now,
- 18:48Speaker 1: the other side of that could be at an appropriate
- 18:50Speaker 1: time media ask Elias, have you even reached out this
- 18:54Speaker 1: year to Trevor and his folks? Is anything happened? Did
- 18:57Speaker 1: you get anywhere? Did you try? You asked that question
- 19:01Speaker 1: and hear his answered That's what I'd like to hear
- 19:04Speaker 1: on the other side of it. Friday would not have
- 19:06Speaker 1: been the appropriate time to do that. It's a celebration
- 19:08Speaker 1: of Bradish. The whole team's sitting there, including Trevor. That
- 19:12Speaker 1: probably was not the time to try to back Mike
- 19:15Speaker 1: into a corner or get and answer that specific question.
- 19:17Speaker 1: But I would think at some point before or after
- 19:21Speaker 1: the deadline, he's going to do more media and somebody's
- 19:24Speaker 1: got to bring that question up. We got to hear
- 19:26Speaker 1: his side of this.
- 19:28Speaker 2: Yeah, definitely, And I think you're I think it's more
- 19:30Speaker 2: and I think it even in the press conference, he
- 19:32Speaker 2: had mentioned that a lot of players don't like the
- 19:34Speaker 2: distraction in season. So maybe it's them not wanting to
- 19:38Speaker 2: reach out to Rogers representation because they don't want it
- 19:41Speaker 2: to be distraction, or it's just I feel like it's
- 19:43Speaker 2: a lot of times it's it's you don't know, so
- 19:46Speaker 2: you don't want to like push anything and you don't
- 19:48Speaker 2: want to mess up anything along the way, and it
- 19:51Speaker 2: just gets I think there's like no communication at all
- 19:53Speaker 2: from both sides, so nobody knows what's what's actually going on.
- 19:57Speaker 5: Well, what's interesting, Brad.
- 19:59Speaker 4: I had Rogers on my show a week before opening day,
- 20:03Speaker 4: and I remember he was asked at the beginning of
- 20:04Speaker 4: spring training were there any talks? He said no, So
- 20:07Speaker 4: I asked him again at that point, what were there
- 20:09Speaker 4: any talks? He said no, And then I did ask him, well,
- 20:13Speaker 4: would you and your representative be open to negotiating mid season?
- 20:17Speaker 5: And he did say yeah, he said he was all
- 20:19Speaker 5: for it. So I don't know. I don't know.
- 20:24Speaker 1: It's a strange scenario that is still unresolved. We don't
- 20:28Speaker 1: know as he's staying, is he going, is he traded?
- 20:30Speaker 1: Is he going to pitch through the season. He had
- 20:32Speaker 1: a qualifying offer and leave. Maybe they make a last
- 20:35Speaker 1: ditch Hail Mary on you know in November, and he returned.
- 20:39Speaker 1: You know, he really wants to be here, so he
- 20:41Speaker 1: likes what he hears these days. When he gets to
- 20:44Speaker 1: the point where a player can hear from thirty clubs,
- 20:47Speaker 1: that's when your club is in trouble. If you haven't
- 20:49Speaker 1: done it by then, you know, now you're giving twenty
- 20:52Speaker 1: nine other teams a shot at this guy.
- 20:54Speaker 4: That's that's challenging, And especially if you consider Steve, if
- 20:59Speaker 4: he pitches an they're close to the level he's pitching
- 21:02Speaker 4: right now.
- 21:02Speaker 5: The rest of the way. Man, he could ask.
- 21:05Speaker 4: For the moon at that point, and who would blame him,
- 21:07Speaker 4: especially being a left handed starter.
- 21:10Speaker 1: Exactly a lot to play out here, trade deadline, tick
- 21:12Speaker 1: tick tick Here to August third. We're closing in on
- 21:15Speaker 1: that as the Orioles lose to Atlanta on Sunday and
- 21:18Speaker 1: eleven innings now head to Detroit. We got more coming
- 21:21Speaker 1: up on Birdland Territory.

- 22:55Speaker 1: As we take this show, I just noticed via Twitter
- 22:59Speaker 1: that some of the reporters are noting Oriel pitching prospects.
- 23:02Speaker 1: Luis de Leone and Juwan Watts Brown are being promoted
- 23:07Speaker 1: from double A to triple A. And infielder of Viheva
- 23:10Speaker 1: Eloy is going from Frederick to double A Chesapeake. So
- 23:13Speaker 1: that's interesting. Daily One to Triple A, Jiwan Rotts Brown
- 23:18Speaker 1: to triple A. The Oels are getting some of the
- 23:20Speaker 1: arms a step closer. And I went to Booie about
- 23:23Speaker 1: a month ago and did a long piece on Luis
- 23:25Speaker 1: de Leone, who's RA at that time was six, and
- 23:29Speaker 1: I watched him pitch that night, and I talked to
- 23:31Speaker 1: some people with the team and I concluded he was
- 23:34Speaker 1: about to get it going and he has gotten a
- 23:36Speaker 1: Cohen that night in front of me. He did because
- 23:39Speaker 1: his line was a lot better than what the box
- 23:42Speaker 1: score said. That night, the defense hurt him and Juwan
- 23:45Speaker 1: wats Brown, a right hander with a lot of talent
- 23:48Speaker 1: they traded last year, got him in a deadline deal.
- 23:52Speaker 1: Fans are going to look at his overall stats and
- 23:54Speaker 1: not be impressed, but his last six or seven at
- 23:56Speaker 1: double A have been lights out. So the Oils are
- 23:59Speaker 1: taking a hot pitch. You're in promoting them. These are
- 24:01Speaker 1: two of their better arms, and so that's interesting. They're
- 24:05Speaker 1: getting guys one step closer here. Who knows who they're
- 24:08Speaker 1: gonna call well, and as the season gets to the
- 24:10Speaker 1: dwindling days.
- 24:12Speaker 3: Yeah, definitely.
- 24:12Speaker 2: I think it's always interesting when you see that jump
- 24:15Speaker 2: from double A to triple A, kind of see where
- 24:17Speaker 2: they're at and if they can continue the success from
- 24:19Speaker 2: double A to triple A, you know they're knocking on
- 24:21Speaker 2: the doorstep of the big league. So it's definitely exciting
- 24:24Speaker 2: times down on the farms for guys. When you're getting promoted,
- 24:26Speaker 2: it's always exciting, but when you know you're one level
- 24:28Speaker 2: away from the big leagues.
- 24:29Speaker 3: That's when it.
- 24:30Speaker 2: Really really starts to get interesting and fun, because you know,
- 24:34Speaker 2: anything could happen at any point when you're in Triple
- 24:36Speaker 2: A and Steve.
- 24:38Speaker 4: You know, even going back to when this farm system
- 24:41Speaker 4: was at its peak three four years ago, a number
- 24:43Speaker 4: one farm system for multiple years, I feel like it
- 24:46Speaker 4: didn't have this type of pitching depth that it currently
- 24:51Speaker 4: has right now.
- 24:53Speaker 1: It's come fast to him in the last year or two.
- 24:56Speaker 1: You could see last year at Double A, the big
- 24:58Speaker 1: three of Trey g Gibson, Nestor Herman, and Levi Wells,
- 25:04Speaker 1: they've all been now been Triple A. One of those guys,
- 25:07Speaker 1: Wells is hurt. Hermon's pitching well by the way, and
- 25:10Speaker 1: Gibson's back pitching for Triple A. So they're loading up
- 25:13Speaker 1: some arms at Triple A. And if you look at
- 25:16Speaker 1: their top fifteen prospects Baseball America tenor pitchers, so clearly
- 25:20Speaker 1: the shift has happened. The hitters made it to the
- 25:23Speaker 1: big leagues, Adlee, Gunner, cals Er, Westburgh. The pitchers are
- 25:27Speaker 1: a step or two behind them. But I like some
- 25:30Speaker 1: of these guys, as you guys know, I really like
- 25:32Speaker 1: Trey Gibson, but I like Leuis dellyng too, and I've
- 25:35Speaker 1: been wondering which international pitcher they signed is going to
- 25:40Speaker 1: break through first, and this might be the guy A
- 25:43Speaker 1: lot of people have labeled him as the guy to
- 25:45Speaker 1: do that. Lefty with the mid to high nineties slider
- 25:49Speaker 1: is really really good, I mean really good, and he's
- 25:52Speaker 1: really driven to pitch well. And he had an instance
- 25:56Speaker 1: this year at Double A where he gave up a
- 25:57Speaker 1: ton of runs and the pitching coach told he challenged
- 26:01Speaker 1: them to eliminate all that overnight, so you throw your
- 26:05Speaker 1: bullpen and you show us that what is more like you?
- 26:09Speaker 1: And he did and they liked the response. So I'll
- 26:12Speaker 1: be curious to see what these guys do at Triple A.
- 26:16Speaker 1: I want to touch on an attendance note, and we
- 26:20Speaker 1: will do that in a moment here On Birdland Territory.

- 26:43Speaker 1: So, guys, this series against Atlanta disappointing end for the
- 26:46Speaker 1: Ools on the field, but in the stands. It was
- 26:48Speaker 1: arousing success. Ninety eight thousand and six, ninety a weekend series.
- 26:53Speaker 1: They gave away these shirts the whole weekend. The kids
- 26:56Speaker 1: got them today and the adults got the Hawaiian shirts
- 26:58Speaker 1: Friday and Saturday. And the orals will tell you that
- 27:01Speaker 1: is their most popular promotion. The fans love these Hawaiian shirts,
- 27:06Speaker 1: so why not have two night giveaways? And for me,
- 27:09Speaker 1: attendance in Baltimore safer occasional. You know, Outliers really comes
- 27:16Speaker 1: down to weekend and giveaways, and if you put them
- 27:18Speaker 1: two together, you really got something and you get people
- 27:21Speaker 1: in the stands. Because Tim, I have fans say, why
- 27:23Speaker 1: are people watching the Orioles there? They're losing record, why
- 27:26Speaker 1: are they going? It's not about attendance doesn't happen immediate anymore.
- 27:32Speaker 1: You know you're winning team, so bam, all of a sudden,
- 27:34Speaker 1: in two weeks, everybody shows up. It's just different. I
- 27:38Speaker 1: just feel the game is different and and weekends and
- 27:42Speaker 1: promotions get people in the stands almost no matter of
- 27:46Speaker 1: the record.
- 27:48Speaker 2: I remember when I was playing, the Hawaiian shirt was
- 27:50Speaker 2: a huge giveaway and it was always packed house. And
- 27:53Speaker 2: you know, anybody you talked to that was getting close
- 27:55Speaker 2: to that that time. They were like, oh yeah, it's
- 27:57Speaker 2: why sure giveaway. We're definitely gonna be there that weekend.
- 27:59Speaker 2: So it's funny that they're not funny, but it's just
- 28:02Speaker 2: kind of cool that they're still selling huge amounts of
- 28:04Speaker 2: tickets when they give away the Hawaiian shirt, because even
- 28:07Speaker 2: ten years ago at this point, I remember that being
- 28:09Speaker 2: a big giveaway and my family was in town one
- 28:12Speaker 2: of those giveaways and the stadium was slammed. And it's
- 28:15Speaker 2: always fun playing in front of those crowds no matter
- 28:17Speaker 2: what gets them in the stands, it's always fun with
- 28:19Speaker 2: Kim the yards packed. So that's cool to see this weekend,
- 28:22Speaker 2: and unfortunately they just didn't get it done. But it's
- 28:25Speaker 2: still great to have that many people in the stands
- 28:27Speaker 2: anytime you can get them.
- 28:29Speaker 5: Yeah, Hawaiian shirt and the floppy hat.
- 28:32Speaker 4: Those are the two stables that I feel like have
- 28:34Speaker 4: been around for quite some time at this point. But look,
- 28:38Speaker 4: it's one of the best ballparks in all of baseball.
- 28:40Speaker 4: It just underwent significant renovations that have only made it
- 28:44Speaker 4: even better, and it's going to undergo even more renovations
- 28:47Speaker 4: this offseason.
- 28:48Speaker 5: But you can go back, even that series against the Royals.
- 28:52Speaker 4: Steve where heading into the All Star break, I was
- 28:55Speaker 4: a packed weekend. Look next weekend when the Phillies come
- 28:58Speaker 4: to town, it's going to be a packed house again.
- 29:01Speaker 4: Chris Davis getting inducted into the Orioles Hall of Fame Saturday.
- 29:06Speaker 4: You know it's it's gonna be another strong attended series.
- 29:11Speaker 1: Yeah, And the Orils now do a military promotion every
- 29:14Speaker 1: home game. Eighty one out of eighty one, they'll salute
- 29:18Speaker 1: a member of the military or some connects you with that,
- 29:21Speaker 1: which is a great thing. It's very It's become very
- 29:23Speaker 1: popular moment in the game when the fans salute that
- 29:26Speaker 1: person who gets his moment in the spotlight. It's really cool.
- 29:29Speaker 4: I know I brought it up. I think it was
- 29:31Speaker 4: the Royal series. Coincidentally enough that that one hundred.
- 29:34Speaker 5: One year old.
- 29:35Speaker 3: Yeah, he's saying that.
- 29:38Speaker 5: I was singing the national anthem. It's like, oh my god,
- 29:41Speaker 5: this is awesome. Like, geez, that's off to that's off
- 29:44Speaker 5: to him.
- 29:45Speaker 2: All the Oriols have always done that too. Like even
- 29:47Speaker 2: when I was playing, it was like kind of underneath
- 29:49Speaker 2: the tunnel wasn't really talked about a lot but Sunday games,
- 29:52Speaker 2: they had different military organizations that would come down and
- 29:54Speaker 2: I love being a part of that, just getting to
- 29:56Speaker 2: meet the families. And I mean it was a wide
- 29:59Speaker 2: variety of military organizations, but all former military either still
- 30:03Speaker 2: serving or just got done serving, you know. Unfortunately, some
- 30:07Speaker 2: families who lost members in the military service. The Royals
- 30:10Speaker 2: have always done such a great job with honoring those,
- 30:13Speaker 2: you know, people and their families, and it's great to
- 30:16Speaker 2: see that they're now doing every single game, because that
- 30:18Speaker 2: should be something that should be done every game. It
- 30:20Speaker 2: doesn't take a lot, and it means a lot of
- 30:22Speaker 2: those families and the servicemen and women that have given
- 30:25Speaker 2: sometimes everything to let us play a game and let
- 30:28Speaker 2: us cover the game and all that stuff. So it's
- 30:30Speaker 2: really cool seeing the Oils be able to do that.
- 30:32Speaker 1: Yeah, and it means a lot to the people at
- 30:34Speaker 1: the game. You see, they are happy to let that
- 30:37Speaker 1: person know how appreciated they are and what they did
- 30:40Speaker 1: for the United States. So it's really cool. It's just
- 30:43Speaker 1: a feel good moment. It's a nice thing to do
- 30:46Speaker 1: that a ball club can do. And the Oriols and
- 30:48Speaker 1: Ravens really both do a lot of great community stuff
- 30:50Speaker 1: so we tip our hat to both of them for
- 30:53Speaker 1: that and we'll see how it gets on the field.
- 30:55Speaker 1: Those fans is they need a good week man going
- 30:58Speaker 1: to Detroit. Got to lick their wounds after this loss
- 31:00Speaker 1: on Sunday against Atlanta and get back in the win
- 31:03Speaker 1: calm and no matter what happens, we'll be here to
