- 0:00Modern civilization puts a premium on the mental process.
- 0:05We educate our children with a focus on the mind.
- 0:08We want them to learn verbal skills, reading skills, logical
- 0:13skills and measure them on their abilities in these areas with
- 0:17various forms of standardized tests, by which we then classify
- 0:22them based on their capabilities.
- 0:23In this regard, we undervalue different forms of intelligence
- 0:30that may be based on the capacities of the physical body,
- 0:33the vital nature or the emotional being.
- 0:37Empathy and insight are less valued than mental linear logic.
- 0:43We fill the minds of the children with facts, arguments
- 0:47and chatter. We create an atmosphere with
- 0:50social media, Internet, mass media, constant blaring of music
- 0:56or talk radio that eliminates silence of the mind and keeps
- 1:01the mind occupied and vibrating with the energies moving in the
- 1:05external world. We raise generations of human
- 1:10beings who are alienated from the quiet mind and its powers of
- 1:16receptivity, intuition and understanding.
- 1:22Spiritual disciplines try in many cases to break the habits
- 1:25of mental chatter. Raji Yoga in particular asked
- 1:30the practitioner to focus on observing the mind stuff chitta
- 1:35and bringing it into a state of quiescence such that it becomes
- 1:40like a body of water without a ripple or like a mirror that
- 1:44reflects the exact image it receives without distortion.
- 1:49Other disciplines use mantras to 1st remove the distracting
- 1:53forces that vibrate the mind stuff and then the mantra itself
- 1:58can be dispensed with. Visualization, contemplation on
- 2:04the infinite universe, devotional aspiration and
- 2:08consecration all can help a seeker out of the realm of
- 2:12mental chatter. Srioro Bindo describes his own
- 2:16experience with a practice that brought him silence of the mind.
- 2:20This state is not a dull, empty and ignorant state, but one that
- 2:25is alert, luminous and receptive.
- 2:29When the mind falls silent, new higher powers of awareness are
- 2:34able to enter and act. For those who have been
- 2:38habituated to the mental process, the quieting of the
- 2:41mind initially is a scary event. They wonder if they are losing
- 2:46their minds, if they are becoming incompetent to think
- 2:49and act, if they have lost their ability to live and act in the
- 2:53society and carry out whatever role they have to play in a
- 2:59certain state. If they pass over the border
- 3:01into another level of consciousness, a state akin to
- 3:05what is known as Samati, they even become afraid that they are
- 3:09going to die. This is the fear of the ego
- 3:13consciousness when it loses its limiting frame.
- 3:16The seeker eventually learns to accept the status of quiet mind
- 3:20and receptivity, and he can then benefit from the status.
- 3:26Rene Descartes famously proclaimed cogito ergo sum.
- 3:32I think therefore I am. He epitomized the predominant
- 3:37attachment to the mental being and its association and
- 3:41identification with the ego consciousness.
- 3:45In the future, as the spiritual consciousness takes on its
- 3:49leading role as the next stage in the evolution of
- 3:51consciousness, it will not be correct to associate existence
- 3:56with thinking. Rather, existence will be
- 4:00understood as a status of being that can observe, know and
- 4:05respond through powers that are not necessarily routed through
- 4:10the verbal center of the being the mother observes.
- 4:15Quote. The noise made by all the words,
- 4:19all the ideas in your head is so deafening that it prevents you
- 4:23from hearing the truth when it wants to manifest.
- 4:27To learn to be quiet and silent. When you have a problem to
- 4:31solve, instead of turning over in your head all the
- 4:34possibilities, all the consequences, all the possible
- 4:38things one should or should not do.
- 4:41If you remain quiet with an aspiration for goodwill, if
- 4:46possible a need for goodwill, the solution comes very quickly
- 4:52and as you are silent, you're able to hear it.
- 4:56When you are caught in a difficulty, try this method.
- 5:00Instead of becoming agitated, turning over all the ideas and
- 5:04actively seeking solutions of worrying, fretting, running here
- 5:09and there inside your head, remain quiet and according to
- 5:15your nature, with ardor or peace, with intensity or
- 5:20widening, or with all these together, implore the light and
- 5:25wait for it to come. In this way the path would be
- 5:30considerably shortened. And quote reference 3 or old
- 5:36into and the mother looking from within.
