Transcript
- 0:04SPEAKER_00: Hi guys, and welcome back to another episode of Sprinker Anarchy.
- 0:08SPEAKER_00: This is your host, Ekta, and I'm super, super stoked for this interview because I absolutely love the products in this line, and I'm so excited to be talking to the founder.
- 0:17SPEAKER_00: So without further ado, I want to introduce you guys to Dara Levy, who is the founder for Dermaflash.
- 0:23SPEAKER_00: I'm sure a lot of you have seen the products around, and I know it's huge on Instagram.
- 0:27SPEAKER_00: So welcome to the show, Dara.
- 0:28SPEAKER_00: I'm so I'm so excited that you're here.
- 0:31SPEAKER_01: Hi.
- 0:34SPEAKER_01: Hi, Ecta.
- 0:35SPEAKER_01: So thrilled to be here.
- 0:36SPEAKER_01: Thank you for having me.
- 0:38SPEAKER_00: It's truly my honor.
- 0:39SPEAKER_00: Um, I want to get started by talking about your your background and your career and just what really inspired you to create um, you know, your first device.
- 0:50SPEAKER_02: Well, it's been a real journey to be honest with you.
- 0:53SPEAKER_02: Um, but I have always been a skincare junkie.
- 0:59SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:00SPEAKER_02: And I um, you know, have I got I was really tired, to be honest, of going from place to place to get a facial in the back of a of a beauty shop and the um Botox at a plastic surgeon and um derma planing at a dermatologist and you know, everything else going from place to place.
- 1:22SPEAKER_02: It was exhausting.
- 1:23SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:24SPEAKER_02: So um in 2009, I actually opened a very high-end med spa in Chicago.
- 1:33SPEAKER_03: Oh, yeah.
- 1:34SPEAKER_02: So without knowing it, I was really doing research right during that whole time.
- 1:40SPEAKER_02: But before I opened my door, my doors, I decided that derma planing was going to be the foundation of everything we did at my spa because I had been an avid dermaplaner for years.
- 1:53SPEAKER_02: And I knew how it just made everything better.
- 1:57SPEAKER_02: It made all services work better, all products work more effectively.
- 2:02SPEAKER_02: And I wanted to start every treatment with derma planing.
- 2:06SPEAKER_02: I trademarked our derma planing treatment, dermaflash, at the time, not knowing that the universe had a much bigger plan in store for me.
- 2:15SPEAKER_02: Um, so we became, you know, really, and we did everything.
- 2:19SPEAKER_02: We did Botox and fillers and lasers and traditional facials and cool sculpting and Altera, I mean, you name it, we did it.
- 2:28SPEAKER_02: Um, but what we really became famous for was our derma planning treatment, our dermaflash treatment.
- 2:34SPEAKER_02: And I'm, you know, kind of that that gal that's always thinking of the next big thing.
- 2:41SPEAKER_02: And a few years in, I decided that I wanted to start a skincare line.
- 2:46SPEAKER_02: And it wasn't just going to be a skincare line for my spa.
- 2:49SPEAKER_02: You know, in my brain, I was going to be the next Estee Lauder.
- 2:52SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 2:53SPEAKER_02: So I love that.
- 2:56SPEAKER_02: So, you know, we got to work and we started thinking about the line, and we had a name and we had a product innovation pipeline, and we were literally, we'd rolled up our sleeves and we're in the lab, and we couldn't decide what that hero ingredient was going to be.
- 3:13SPEAKER_02: Was it going to be a peptide or a stem cell or an oil?
- 3:16SPEAKER_02: Or, you know, what was that magic bullet going to be?
- 3:21SPEAKER_02: And we we were really struggling with that.
- 3:24SPEAKER_02: And one day I was in the shower and I screamed at the top of my lungs, oh my God, it's dermaflash, it's dermaflash.
- 3:33SPEAKER_02: Like this doesn't exist.
- 3:34SPEAKER_02: I have to, it's dermaflash.
- 3:36SPEAKER_02: Oh my gosh.
- 3:38SPEAKER_02: Literally true story.
- 3:39SPEAKER_02: It was like that, you know, Oprah, aha moment that she always used to talk about.
- 3:45SPEAKER_02: And um, you know, I came running out of the shower soaking wet and called everybody I could you think of to like say, oh my God, I had the most insane idea.
- 3:55SPEAKER_02: And I got validation from some really influential people that this was an amazing idea.
- 4:02SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 4:04SPEAKER_02: So now I'm sort of like an idiot savant because I'd never invented anything, I had no idea what I was doing.
- 4:12SPEAKER_02: And um I sold my spa.
- 4:16SPEAKER_02: And at this point, we had sold 6,000 derma planting treatments.
- 4:20SPEAKER_02: By the time you know this came to market, I had sold 6,000 derma planting treatments in under five years.
- 4:26SPEAKER_02: And, you know, for a little local one-door spa, that's fairly amazing.
- 4:32SPEAKER_02: That's huge.
- 4:33SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah.
- 4:35SPEAKER_02: And, you know, I will tell you that it wasn't easy, and it it's not like I, because I was really doing this, you know, with one other person, and we were just kind of innovating and ideating and bouncing ideas off of people.
- 4:48SPEAKER_02: I went through three different designers that just didn't get it and it didn't make sense to them.
- 4:55SPEAKER_02: And what I was trying to invent a category, because prior to the launch of Dermaflash, yeah, at home derma planing didn't exist.
- 5:07SPEAKER_02: Like you had to go to a medical spa, a doctor's office.
- 5:11SPEAKER_02: And what I and what I realized, and I don't know if you were ever had been professionally dermoplaned before.
- 5:17SPEAKER_02: Have you ever been professionally?
- 5:19SPEAKER_00: I've never gone through the process.
- 5:20SPEAKER_00: No, and I'd love for you to tell us about it, actually.
- 5:23SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it's really um, it's a beautiful treatment where a medical esthetician uses literally a surgical scalpel.
- 5:33SPEAKER_02: It's called a 10S blade.
- 5:35SPEAKER_02: I could cut you open with it.
- 5:37SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 5:38SPEAKER_02: And of course, we didn't do that, but you you, you know, you glide this blade over the surface of a woman's face, and it removes all of the dead skin cells, the built-up debris, and what the hook and sort of that piece that keeps you coming back, it gets rid of all that peach fuzz.
- 6:00SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 6:01SPEAKER_02: And when you remove all of that debris and cook from your face, light is able to bounce off the plans of your skin.
- 6:10SPEAKER_02: You look lit from within, you have this glow because instead of light absorbing into your skin, light bounces off the high points of your skin because there's nothing in its way.
- 6:25SPEAKER_02: It's like you get this when you look at children, they're glowy and dewy, and it's natural because light is bouncing off of their skin.
- 6:35SPEAKER_00: Right, right.
- 6:36SPEAKER_00: That's brilliant.
- 6:37SPEAKER_00: I've never thought about that.
- 6:39SPEAKER_00: And you know, I the interesting part for me, uh, I think especially it was the idea of getting rid of the peach fuzz.
- 6:46SPEAKER_00: I know women are very reluctant when it comes to like facial hair, you know, like we're there.
- 6:52SPEAKER_00: It's almost like it's not talked about a lot.
- 6:54SPEAKER_00: And I I want to ask you about that, you know, also is like if you face any hurdles, you know, from the consumer and from that, because I I feel like there has been this stigma.
- 7:04SPEAKER_00: I remember, you know, my mother growing up was like, Well, don't shave your little you know, kid's stash, you know.
- 7:09SPEAKER_02: Oh my god, and it's an old wives tale, and I will tell you, yeah, we've been around for over five years.
- 7:16SPEAKER_02: The number one question to this day, from even the most savvy skin junkies, yeah, is will my hair grow back thicker, darker, fuller, different?
- 7:28SPEAKER_02: And right, right, dramatically, it will not.
- 7:32SPEAKER_02: Like we need to just, you know, debunk that myth.
- 7:35SPEAKER_02: We need to kneecap that myth because the truth of the matter is we are women, we grow vellus hair, which is like fine cottony fluff.
- 7:46SPEAKER_02: Men grow terminal hair, which is like a piece of copper wire.
- 7:50SPEAKER_02: We are not shaving, you know.
- 7:53SPEAKER_02: Men have to lubricate their beards to make them receptive to removal.
- 7:58SPEAKER_02: We are exfoliating with the added benefit of also removing that peach fuzz.
- 8:04SPEAKER_02: That is so fascinating.
- 8:05SPEAKER_02: I had no idea.
- 8:07SPEAKER_02: Yeah, so what you're seeing when you dermaflesh, what you're seeing is a cocktail of all the oldest layer of dead skin cells, built-up environmental debris, bacteria, as well as the peach fuzz.
- 8:24SPEAKER_02: So you're removing the oldest layer, the top layer.
- 8:28SPEAKER_02: And what you're doing when you when you when you do this treatment is you're saying to your skin, act younger.
- 8:35SPEAKER_02: You're encouraging microcirculation, you're encouraging cellular turnover.
- 8:41SPEAKER_02: And you know, our skin cells turnover every 28 days and under perfect circumstances.
- 8:46SPEAKER_02: As we age, that slows down.
- 8:49SPEAKER_02: So, you know, in-spa derma planning is done every six weeks.
- 8:54SPEAKER_02: So, what happens is you walk out of there, you are magnificent, you are glowing, you are standing up taller because you feel better about yourself.
- 9:02SPEAKER_02: I love that.
- 9:03SPEAKER_02: But just really, like seriously, for me, it I literally like would watch people come out of the treatment room 30 minutes later, a different woman.
- 9:15SPEAKER_02: Like they walked in schlumpy and tired, their shoulders down, not in a good mood.
- 9:20SPEAKER_02: And they came out with their shoulders back, their head held high, and they were glowing.
- 9:26SPEAKER_02: And you know, it's like that when Harry met Sally, I'll have what she's having moment.
- 9:31SPEAKER_02: Yeah, but I literally, it never got old for me to see that.
- 9:36SPEAKER_02: And I will tell you, it never gets old for me, even with my own face.
- 9:39SPEAKER_02: Every week I dermaflash, and that's the magic.
- 9:42SPEAKER_02: We dermaflash once a week, so we're encouraging that cellular turnover every single week.
- 9:51SPEAKER_00: So, you know, I have I have some questions because I completely agree with you.
- 9:54SPEAKER_00: And I think that, you know, for me, when I look at skincare and skincare products and devices, I think that what you said is such an important point where it's really about making people feel like the best version of themselves.
- 10:07SPEAKER_00: And I think that's also where the self-care component comes in, right?
- 10:10SPEAKER_00: So, like I love that.
- 10:11SPEAKER_00: I love everything you said.
- 10:13SPEAKER_00: But for me, I I wonder how much truth there is in this whole, you know, debate with physical exfoliation versus chemical.
- 10:21SPEAKER_00: Like, I mean, do you have some insight into that?
- 10:23SPEAKER_00: Because I mean, I've been using the device and I my skin absolutely loves it.
- 10:27SPEAKER_00: So for all those skeptics out there, they're like, well, physical exfoliation shouldn't be a thing.
- 10:31SPEAKER_00: I I want to actually, you know, open that up and see what your advice is.
- 10:35SPEAKER_02: It's so interesting.
- 10:36SPEAKER_02: What I haven't said is that, you know, we're not using this 10S blade when we're dermaplaning at home, obviously.
- 10:44SPEAKER_02: The the in-spot treatment, you know, we used to prep the skin, and I'm not kidding, with acetone, because where men have to lubricate their beards, when we're when we're dermaplaning or derma flashing, we need your skin to be squeaky clean and very bone dry, because we need all of the hair and all of the dead skin cells to actually come to the surface to stand up.
- 11:09SPEAKER_02: If somebody says, I used your device and nothing happened, I know that they didn't use my pre-flash cleanser because our cleanser, I had to come up with a way to, I've obviously wasn't going to give you a nail polish remover to collect.
- 11:26SPEAKER_02: So we came up with a clean, efficacious way to prep the skin with a cleanser that kind of gives you, if you remember being a teenager and your skin being really dry and taught, like after you would use like a clear cyl or something like that.
- 11:42SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 11:43SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 11:43SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 11:45SPEAKER_02: We want you to feel like taught and and almost, you know, dry to get that, to get that perfect canvas for the treatment.
- 11:55SPEAKER_02: But we also, Dermaflash is powered by sonic technology.
- 12:01SPEAKER_02: So we have this sonic um technology that powers the device that eases the glide across your face, that actually gives you this microcirculation boost.
- 12:14SPEAKER_02: And it it just becomes this really elegant treatment.
- 12:17SPEAKER_02: And there are also multiple safety features built in so that you know you're not using this raw blade that we used to use, you know, in spa.
- 12:27SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 12:28SPEAKER_00: I mean, I love that.
- 12:29SPEAKER_00: I love that.
- 12:29SPEAKER_00: I mean, well, you know, one of the biggest hurdles I think um that I see with you know at-home devices for skin health um is that idea of can the consumer use it properly, you know, and and when I think of that, I think back to like, you know, like the really bad, like um like the derma rollers that were like they had the little things at the end, like what do you call those?
- 12:52SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah, you know what I mean?
- 12:53SPEAKER_00: And and people were just overdoing it and they were just ruining their face.
- 12:57SPEAKER_00: And so, you know, when I look at your device, I'm I'm like, you know, this is a well-done product.
- 13:02SPEAKER_00: You've got a lot of technology here.
- 13:04SPEAKER_00: So, you know, I want to talk more about that technology, and I want to talk, make sure people understand that, you know, there's a huge difference between, you know, a physical device like a roller with needles on it, and what you have here, you know, which is yeah, and on top of that, you know, aside from we have a safety cage.
- 13:21SPEAKER_02: So we never we have we call our blade, what the blade in our device an edge because we're not shaving, right?
- 13:28SPEAKER_02: We're exfoliating.
- 13:29SPEAKER_02: And we have a beautiful safety cage that encases that blade that is in that edge to really make it so safe and so effective.
- 13:41SPEAKER_02: But the the magic of the device, it was inspired not only by in-spot derma planing, but it was inspired by my spirit animal, which is the hummingbird.
- 13:51SPEAKER_02: Oh, if you look, there's hummingbirds on the box and on the side of the device, and yeah, the hummingbird is the only bird that can fly forwards, backwards, upside down, sideways, and hover in space.
- 14:06SPEAKER_02: And just like dermaflash, there's really no wrong way to use it.
- 14:11SPEAKER_02: You can go up, you can go down, you can go in, you can go out.
- 14:14SPEAKER_02: There are just a few little tricks.
- 14:16SPEAKER_02: Like you have to use my cleanser, and you want to hold your skin taut with a finger from the opposite hand because you want to create like a nice taut surface, right?
- 14:26SPEAKER_02: Right, and then you want to use short little feathery strokes.
- 14:30SPEAKER_02: And obviously, the device is ergonomically correct for both left hand and right hand.
- 14:36SPEAKER_02: So you hold the device at a 45-degree angle.
- 14:39SPEAKER_02: You never want to come in straight, right?
- 14:42SPEAKER_02: Okay, other than that, and you use it all over your face, your forehead, your your chin, above your mustache area.
- 14:50SPEAKER_02: You can use it on your neck, and the only counter, the only thing we say not to do is don't go over active acne because you know there is a blade in there, so it would open up like a you know, an active blemish.
- 15:04SPEAKER_00: But that's what I was gonna ask you, actually.
- 15:06SPEAKER_00: Yeah, that's that's perfect, and that's obvious.
- 15:08SPEAKER_00: You know, you shouldn't be doing that, anyways.
- 15:10SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 15:11SPEAKER_02: And I will tell you that, you know, from from day one, this device was made for women.
- 15:19SPEAKER_02: Men can use it above their beard line and on their forehead, but not in their bird beard line where they grow terminal hair because it actually will like snap and crack and popple, it won't feel good.
- 15:32SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 15:32SPEAKER_02: Um, and but it really creates this like absolutely flawless canvas for makeup, because when you remove that debris, makeup just glides on to this smooth, even canvas.
- 15:49SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 15:50SPEAKER_02: But more excitingly for me, like in I don't know about you, but since this pandemic hit, I literally have not put makeup on.
- 15:59SPEAKER_00: Yeah, me neither.
- 16:00SPEAKER_02: So, what I want to do is I want to empower women of all ages, skin types, tones, ethnicities.
- 16:08SPEAKER_02: They all, you know, this is for every woman, regardless of who she is.
- 16:14SPEAKER_02: If she has skin, she needs this device.
- 16:17SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 16:17SPEAKER_00: So um, you know, I want to ask you some questions about the technology because I know you run into the differences of the two types of hair, and that was very fascinating.
- 16:26SPEAKER_00: Um, now is there something built into where there's a certain like size of the hair that's um, you know, it it's like a certain size.
- 16:34SPEAKER_00: Like I want to talk about the actual like the physics and the technology behind it a little bit.
- 16:39SPEAKER_02: I don't think I don't understand what you mean by size.
- 16:42SPEAKER_00: Okay, so for example, like um I know women, but our peach fuzz is um much smaller in terms of like the hair diameter and stuff, right?
- 16:49SPEAKER_00: So like it's a different type of um, you know, you're removing a different size in terms of width.
- 16:56SPEAKER_00: So are some of like what were some of the parameters that you had to keep in mind when you created this technology um in terms of those like level filters?
- 17:06SPEAKER_02: You know, women have been hiding forever in the closet or in the bathroom with the water running, using their husband's razors to remove, like you said, this dirty little secret of peach buzz.
- 17:19SPEAKER_02: When in reality, we're human beings, we grow hair.
- 17:23SPEAKER_02: That's what we do, right?
- 17:25SPEAKER_02: Um, but there, but it's been literally a dirty little secret.
- 17:30SPEAKER_02: And it is counterintuitive to use a razor designed by men for the terminal hair and the rougher skin on a man's face, right?
- 17:40SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 17:40SPEAKER_02: So we had to take into consideration, like I said, this device was invented for women specifically for the delicate skin and vellous hair that we grow as women.
- 17:52SPEAKER_00: I see.
- 17:53SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 17:53SPEAKER_02: And also, and it it needed to work on perfectly dry, dry skin, because as I said, we do not lubricate our skin before dermoplaning, because what that would do, like when you use like today's cleansers are beautiful, they have humectants and moisturizers and oils and great ingredients that work to maybe cleanse you, but it also tamps down all of the debris and peach fuzz.
- 18:24SPEAKER_02: It makes it inaccessible to removal.
- 18:27SPEAKER_00: Right, it's like matting it down, like you don't want something to be matted down.
- 18:30SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 18:31SPEAKER_00: No, I wonder, did you ever um explore the idea of wipes, like like a wipe form to prep your skin before you can use some device?
- 18:39SPEAKER_02: It's so funny that you ask me that because I love that idea.
- 18:44SPEAKER_02: And we have definitely gone down that path as far as pro and the product innovation pipeline.
- 18:51SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 18:51SPEAKER_02: But you know, today we really um are taking a very clean, green, environmentally mindful approach to how we create everything.
- 19:01SPEAKER_00: Love that.
- 19:02SPEAKER_02: So, you know, wipes are a real hot button issue today, and it, you know, it have been for quite a few years, but even more so today.
- 19:11SPEAKER_02: And while we have thought about that as a potential treatment, we're adding to landfill with that with that packet that's holding the wipe and the wipe itself.
- 19:22SPEAKER_02: And you know, we've we've explored it, we've studied it.
- 19:25SPEAKER_02: I can't tell you how much work we've done on it, but we really we've we've decided that number one, if it ain't broke, don't fix it, right?
- 19:34SPEAKER_02: Like our cleanser really works as the perfect prep.
- 19:40SPEAKER_02: Um, but you know, there's too many, there's too many negatives that go along with that route that we actually opted against it.
- 19:48SPEAKER_02: And and we're even, you know, I've brought on um a new person for all of our product innovation, and she's brilliant.
- 19:58SPEAKER_02: She comes from Glossier and um Victoria Seckham.
- 20:03SPEAKER_02: And um we're we're even going cleaner and greener and coming out with exciting new innovations that really um you know take us to the height of of the new revolution of being environmentally mindful and you know, kind of having a holistic approach to product development.
- 20:25SPEAKER_00: Well, Dara, I think you guys are, you know, it's built into what you've created because you have a device that is reusable.
- 20:32SPEAKER_00: I mean, that is the I mean, we talk about sustainability, right?
- 20:35SPEAKER_00: I mean, it's it's a product that's you can really invest in and it's gonna keep delivering over and over again.
- 20:41SPEAKER_00: And you're not creating waste.
- 20:44SPEAKER_02: I love that you said that because you know, when when I from the beginning, from the inception of derma flash, we you know, to go into a medical spa and get a dermal planning treatment, it's at least$125 for a single treatment.
- 21:02SPEAKER_02: In New York, it can be up to$400, but it's one treatment, and you go back and do that, you know, month every four to six weeks.
- 21:11SPEAKER_02: With Dermaflash, you buy the device, it's$199, and then we have our edges, our essentials, basically.
- 21:20SPEAKER_02: We call them the essentials, which comes with our pre-flash cleanser, four edges, and our post flash moisturizer.
- 21:28SPEAKER_02: So basically, for the cup, you know, for like a latte a week, your replenishing.
- 21:35SPEAKER_02: We would never ever want you to use an edge more than one time.
- 21:40SPEAKER_02: And I always say this, but you know, you're removing all the bacteria and debris from the skin surface.
- 21:47SPEAKER_02: You wouldn't eat next Sunday's dinner on last Sunday's unwashed dinner plate.
- 21:52SPEAKER_00: Exactly.
- 21:53SPEAKER_00: Exactly.
- 21:54SPEAKER_00: Yeah, no, I hear you.
- 21:55SPEAKER_00: And but you know, here's the thing like, I know so many people that love.
- 22:00SPEAKER_00: You know, exfoliating wipes.
- 22:02SPEAKER_00: I know, you know, I'm not gonna lie, Dr.
- 22:03SPEAKER_00: Dennis Gross makes some of the most amazing, you know, wipes.
- 22:07SPEAKER_00: But it's like, I mean, the amount of waste that I'm creating, you know, you're right, it's a huge thing.
- 22:12SPEAKER_00: But I the exfoliation I get from you know, derma flash, it's literally the same, if not better, you know.
- 22:19SPEAKER_00: And so that's why I said that is like if for me, exfoliating comes into that step where I'm prepping my skin, like you said, you know, yeah, makeup hasn't really been a thing, but who doesn't like a smooth face?
- 22:30SPEAKER_00: You know what I mean?
- 22:31SPEAKER_00: Who doesn't like feeling like just like you're glowing and you're radiant?
- 22:34SPEAKER_00: So exfoliation is definitely something that's part of my routine.
- 22:38SPEAKER_00: But if I can do it in a way that I know I'm not creating more waste, that's very important for that specifically in skincare.
- 22:44SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and I think, you know, the savvy consumer is going to care more and more and more as time goes by.
- 22:52SPEAKER_02: But more than that, you know, dermaflesh literally changes your skin.
- 22:56SPEAKER_02: So what I love the most is the first time you use it, you literally are your before and after.
- 23:03SPEAKER_02: You do one side of your face and you look thinner and you look toned and tighter and more vibrant and compared to the other side.
- 23:12SPEAKER_02: But this is a once-a-week treatment.
- 23:15SPEAKER_02: And in a clinical trial that we ran, 76% of women in four weeks, so that's once a week, you know, under 10 minutes a week, reported a significant reduction in fine lines and wrinkles.
- 23:28SPEAKER_02: Well, that's just in four weeks.
- 23:30SPEAKER_02: Imagine you do this every week for a year, two years, like your your skin changes.
- 23:38SPEAKER_02: Like it, uh you know, everyone, you know, says beautiful things about my skin, and I'm humbled and and delighted.
- 23:46SPEAKER_02: But I just turned 60, and I'm this is my secret weapon, literally.
- 23:54SPEAKER_00: I love that.
- 23:54SPEAKER_00: I absolutely love that.
- 23:56SPEAKER_00: And I think that, you know, um, one thing I wanted to point out, I think, you know, as consumers, we often think that somebody else knows what our skin, like the what's best for our skin or knows our skin better.
- 24:07SPEAKER_00: But I disagree in that, you know, we know ourselves the best.
- 24:11SPEAKER_00: And when you can have something like this at home, you're able to understand where your areas are that you want to really, you know, start seeing differences.
- 24:19SPEAKER_00: And I think that's very important, you know.
- 24:21SPEAKER_00: For if you're trying to improve the way your skin looks through skincare, you should be able to monitor it.
- 24:26SPEAKER_00: And to be able to bring this kind of a device into a home, I think that's huge.
- 24:31SPEAKER_00: That's absolutely huge, you know.
- 24:33SPEAKER_02: But when you think about what you're saying with skincare, another really important thing to think about is you're putting skincare on top of all of this built-up debris and pizza.
- 24:44SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 24:45SPEAKER_02: It can't do its job, it can't penetrate that layer of garbage on your skin to do what it's meant to do.
- 24:54SPEAKER_02: So all of your skincare is going to work more effectively.
- 24:58SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 24:58SPEAKER_02: And it, you know, it's really a one-two punch.
- 25:02SPEAKER_00: So now, do you have any like are are there certain things that we shouldn't use after we do the geroslash?
- 25:08SPEAKER_00: Like, for example, acids.
- 25:10SPEAKER_00: You know, I know people love using acids at nighttime, but you know, like certain things that you shouldn't use.
- 25:17SPEAKER_02: It's really, I really ask you not to use retinol the the day of.
- 25:21SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 25:22SPEAKER_02: Um, just because you know, it's pretty aggressive and a lot of people, you you might have a reaction.
- 25:28SPEAKER_02: I have to tell you, it's a really personal thing.
- 25:31SPEAKER_02: I love to do like a tingly exfoliant, like um, you know, the P50 by um yeah.
- 25:40SPEAKER_02: I mean, but it's intense.
- 25:42SPEAKER_02: I do that occasionally after I flash just to have, you know, that kaboom moment.
- 25:50SPEAKER_02: I don't exactly like I like that.
- 25:53SPEAKER_02: That's me.
- 25:54SPEAKER_02: And I don't do it every time, just like when I feel like I really, you know, want to give it a little extra push.
- 26:01SPEAKER_02: And um, so it's it's perfectly okay to use a mild exfoliating acid, like a mild AHA, BHA, lactic acid, malic acid afterwards.
- 26:13SPEAKER_02: Actually, in spa, we would do a five percent lactic immediately after dermaflash.
- 26:20SPEAKER_02: And um it I loved it, and it it's you know, non, it it really doesn't, it's gentle.
- 26:28SPEAKER_02: And I think gentle is key.
- 26:31SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 26:31SPEAKER_02: Um but I think that it's really it's personal choice, but I would always say, you know, I would, I would advise caution, and I wouldn't, you know, it's a very personal thing, but retinols, I say stay away from.
- 26:46SPEAKER_02: I wouldn't use like even a 10% glycolic or something like that.
- 26:50SPEAKER_02: I think that would be a little bit too much.
- 26:52SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 26:53SPEAKER_02: Um, so I also ascribe to when in doubt, don't right.
- 26:59SPEAKER_00: No, I mean, I I think it makes uh common sense as well.
- 27:02SPEAKER_00: You know, it aligns with logic that if you're already um getting rid of all the dead skin cells and the and the debris, like you said, I don't think you would need another thing that's going to cause any kind of exfoliation.
- 27:14SPEAKER_02: You know, when you say that you love the Dr.
- 27:15SPEAKER_02: Dennis Gross pads, which I also think you know are beautiful product, um when you use dermaflash, you see all that dead skin that's coming off.
- 27:26SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 27:26SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 27:27SPEAKER_02: So I mean, my thing is this is exfoliation on steroids, but it's kinder, it's gentler, it's smoother, it does not cause any sort of disruption to your skin.
- 27:42SPEAKER_02: And I have, you know, in the olden days when I used to come to New York and do desk sides and meet with editors like right after the other, yeah.
- 27:50SPEAKER_02: I would flash people that have rosacea that said, no, no, I'm scared.
- 27:54SPEAKER_02: I have rosacea, or you know, I have very sensitive skin.
- 27:58SPEAKER_02: It it calms sensitive skin.
- 28:00SPEAKER_02: I can't tell you why, I can't tell you how.
- 28:02SPEAKER_02: I don't know.
- 28:03SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 28:04SPEAKER_02: But it is, it's really like I think it's a memory.
- 28:07SPEAKER_00: It's so interesting.
- 28:08SPEAKER_02: But it's like it was calming down like redness and stuff.
- 28:12SPEAKER_02: It comes for some reason.
- 28:13SPEAKER_02: Like I would never, you know, make those claims because I have no scientific data to back that up.
- 28:20SPEAKER_02: But it it's just, I mean, it truly is feeling is believing, you know.
- 28:28SPEAKER_02: And when I say that, I literally invented a new category in beauty, which is really exciting, but it's also incredibly challenging because the number one sort of wall that you know you we've hit forever is that debunking that hair growth myth tells a woman to actually take a blade to her face, it's a brand new paradigm in beauty.
- 28:52SPEAKER_02: And um, but it's an idea whose time has come because who doesn't want smooth, glowing, radiant skin?
- 28:58SPEAKER_00: Exactly.
- 28:59SPEAKER_00: And I think that also, you know, I can definitely say as a consumer that the myth has is definitely debunked for me because I, you know, my mother did the same thing.
- 29:08SPEAKER_00: She always told me it's gonna grow back thicker, and I and I definitely does not.
- 29:13SPEAKER_00: No, you know, it really does not.
- 29:14SPEAKER_02: So it doesn't, you might notice it as it's first coming back because it's coming in with a little bit of a blunt tip, right?
- 29:22SPEAKER_02: So you you're going from like I'm feeling my face.
- 29:26SPEAKER_02: I have absolutely nothing, no peach fuzz, nothing on my face.
- 29:30SPEAKER_02: But like, you know, when it starts to come in, you might have that sort of visceral when you when you touch it's like, oh yeah, that's peach fuzz.
- 29:38SPEAKER_02: But like to me, you're meant to use this device once a week.
- 29:43SPEAKER_02: Your peach fuzz will stay away forever if you stop using the device.
- 29:49SPEAKER_02: And I, you know, why would you?
- 29:51SPEAKER_02: Your peach fuzz will come back exactly as it was prior to using dermaflash.
- 29:58SPEAKER_00: That's awesome.
- 29:58SPEAKER_00: I love that.
- 29:59SPEAKER_00: And I think sorry, go ahead.
- 30:02SPEAKER_02: No, go ahead.
- 30:02SPEAKER_02: Have you experienced dermapore yet?
- 30:04SPEAKER_02: Because we have an another magic wand that is kind of taking the market.
- 30:08SPEAKER_00: Yeah, dermapore is the next one that I wanted to actually really dive into because um, you know, that I've never seen a device like that.
- 30:15SPEAKER_00: So I want you to tell us actually all about it and like what you were really aiming for when you created that.
- 30:21SPEAKER_02: You know, I what what we strive to do, ECTA, is to bring spa quality results into the comfort and most importantly, in you know, like into the safety of your own home.
- 30:36SPEAKER_02: Um, you know, women, men, everybody to go to a spa and and dedicate the time and the cab fare and everything else to getting there.
- 30:47SPEAKER_02: Um, it's a beautiful luxury, but a lot of people don't have that.
- 30:52SPEAKER_02: And certainly over the last year, we haven't been able to do that.
- 30:56SPEAKER_02: So we're not looking just to bring to market, like, you know, an idea that may or may not work.
- 31:04SPEAKER_02: Everything that we do was born in the spa, and we're bringing it home.
- 31:10SPEAKER_02: So we actually used an ultrasonic cleansing device in my spa.
- 31:18SPEAKER_02: You know, it's basically sort of a hands-off, especially today, we're told keep your hands off your face.
- 31:24SPEAKER_02: You don't want to spread germs.
- 31:26SPEAKER_02: And what dermapore does, it's kind of a again, it's a magic wand.
- 31:31SPEAKER_02: You keep your face wet.
- 31:32SPEAKER_02: We have a patented spatula that is rounded, that easily goes around the nooks and crannies of your face, specifically around your nose and chin in hard-to-reach areas.
- 31:46SPEAKER_02: You keep your face wet, it needs to be wet through the whole treatment.
- 31:50SPEAKER_02: And the ultrasonic vibrations create this water force when combined with the water that actually drives the impurities from deep in your pores out to the surface.
- 32:02SPEAKER_00: I love that.
- 32:03SPEAKER_00: That's so cool.
- 32:05SPEAKER_02: It really is, and it's you know, it's kind of got that gross factor where you can't look away, you can't believe the it's like, yeah, I know I did that with pore strips whenever I use pore strips.
- 32:16SPEAKER_00: But oh my gosh, like I just, you know, I'm sitting here just thinking about this as from the technological standpoint, and I just absolutely love how you know detailed everything is like, you know, and I wanna I want to ask you, like when you were creating um everything from the engineering standpoint, yeah, um, what were some of the hurdles and stuff that you had to go through?
- 32:35SPEAKER_00: Like, you know, can you walk us through that journey a little bit?
- 32:38SPEAKER_00: Because I'm really, really curious.
- 32:39SPEAKER_02: Well, you know, primarily I would say one of the biggest hurdles for me was in dealing with industrial designers and you know, factories.
- 32:50SPEAKER_02: You're dealing with men for the most part that don't have any kind of visual kind of reference of, you know, again, new new ideas.
- 33:03SPEAKER_02: So for me, it was super important that you would proudly display our devices on your countertop, right?
- 33:10SPEAKER_02: Like we didn't want this hiding in a drawer somewhere.
- 33:12SPEAKER_02: I always want your devices charged and ready to go.
- 33:16SPEAKER_02: Which I do, by the way, Dara.
- 33:18SPEAKER_02: I'm gonna say I'm a huge teacher's pet like that.
- 33:21SPEAKER_02: Like thank you.
- 33:22SPEAKER_02: But they're pretty, you know, they're gorgeous.
- 33:25SPEAKER_02: No, they aren't.
- 33:26SPEAKER_02: Yeah, they're gorgeous.
- 33:28SPEAKER_02: Thank you.
- 33:28SPEAKER_02: Aside from the obvious need for them to be effective in the to the highest degree, and I am a perfectionist, and you know, my a lot of people that, you know, my manufacturers along the way would be tell me perfection is the enemy of okay.
- 33:45SPEAKER_02: And I'm like, I'm sorry, I don't care.
- 33:48SPEAKER_02: Like, I want perfection.
- 33:50SPEAKER_02: Yes, exactly.
- 33:52SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 33:52SPEAKER_02: So for me, you know, they needed to be beautiful.
- 33:57SPEAKER_02: They needed both tactily and visually, you know, we're we've got this beautiful silicone finish that feels amazing in your hand.
- 34:06SPEAKER_02: The lights, those five lights actually are indicators of charge.
- 34:10SPEAKER_02: So each light indicates 20% of charge on derma flash.
- 34:14SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 34:15SPEAKER_02: And um dermaflash it's almost like ergonomic.
- 34:18SPEAKER_02: Like I like when I hold it, I'm like, this feels really nice.
- 34:21SPEAKER_02: Like, yeah, well, that was super important.
- 34:24SPEAKER_02: And if you put it in your left hand or your right hand, it's is ergonomically correct for all you know, lefties or righties, which is super important to us as well.
- 34:35SPEAKER_02: And also, I feel the ergonomics kind of position it for you so you are naturally at that 45 degree angle that's so important, right?
- 34:43SPEAKER_00: And it's so easy to use.
- 34:44SPEAKER_00: I mean, I know you're going into like the real nitty-gritty, and I love that, but it's like for everyone listening out there, it's very easy to use.
- 34:51SPEAKER_00: Like the 45 degree angle, like you don't even have to think about it.
- 34:54SPEAKER_00: Like it happens, you know, when I when I put it on my face, I'm doing it the right way.
- 34:58SPEAKER_00: And like, I know I love what you said earlier, Dara, when you said, like, you know, you can really be, you can go in any direction.
- 35:05SPEAKER_00: You know, I think that's so wonderful because you know, we don't have time to be like, well, am I going perfectly against the grain or not against the ground?
- 35:13SPEAKER_00: You know, whatever.
- 35:14SPEAKER_02: So with devices in general, I think that the biggest like sort of barrier for devices to be effective is that you have to take a hurry up and wait attitude with everything.
- 35:28SPEAKER_02: It's like you have to do this three times a week, and in six weeks you'll have a 30% reduction in wrinkles and a 40%.
- 35:38SPEAKER_02: Well, number one, who's complying and who remembers what they're doing.
- 35:42SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and who's keeping a diary?
- 35:43SPEAKER_00: Like, okay, my 30% comes from this and my 20% comes from this.
- 35:47SPEAKER_02: Right, exactly.
- 35:48SPEAKER_02: And what I love with Dermaflesh, a hundred percent of women resorted, like a visible difference in their tone, texture, radiance immediately after using dermaflesh.
- 35:59SPEAKER_02: Well, what is that?
- 36:00SPEAKER_02: That's the hook, right?
- 36:02SPEAKER_02: You want to come back, you want to use it again because you know that your skin is just going to keep improving.
- 36:08SPEAKER_00: Well, you know, I think for me, I always say, you know, data is the queen of any industry.
- 36:13SPEAKER_00: And I think, you know, if you have the data and you obviously do the clinical trials, as well as obviously all the consumer data, I'm sure that you your company has collected.
- 36:22SPEAKER_00: I mean, that speaks for itself, right?
- 36:23SPEAKER_00: I mean, at the end of the day, you know, consumers have to understand that we have to become more mindful.
- 36:28SPEAKER_00: We have to look at companies like yours that are showing us that this is working.
- 36:32SPEAKER_00: Like, here's the proof, you know, like uh we're being transparent, we're letting you guys know that that's important.
- 36:38SPEAKER_00: And I think, you know, like as a consumer, I can't, you know, echo that enough to anyone listening.
- 36:44SPEAKER_00: Is like, do your homework, make sure that you're supporting brands that are actually being innovative because we have 50 hyaluronic acids already, right?
- 36:52SPEAKER_00: You know, and like, you know, five million of the same things going around in this industry.
- 36:57SPEAKER_00: But something like what you've created is one of a kind, it stands out, your vision is beautiful.
- 37:02SPEAKER_00: I mean, that's the kind of stuff that you should want to support.
- 37:04SPEAKER_00: Yeah, absolutely.
- 37:05SPEAKER_00: And I'm not saying that for any other reason, except I really believe in what you've created, and engineering-wise, it's brilliant.
- 37:11SPEAKER_00: So sweet.
- 37:12SPEAKER_02: And you know, and the other thing is like if you look on the side of the box, all of those women work for me at one point or another or another, they were all my employees.
- 37:22SPEAKER_02: Like, I have we are a female powered organization, and you know, it's just this group of like really brilliant, like-minded gals that are changing the face of beauty, I feel, you know.
- 37:40SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and you know, one thing I want to say that that reminds me of, Dara, is like when I was I was interviewing um Diane Vavra a while ago, and we were talking about this this idea of woman, like women coming together and really being like supportive.
- 37:56SPEAKER_00: And she was talking about how in her generation it was just more common.
- 37:59SPEAKER_00: And I feel like people like you are really leading the way in that because you know, we like as a woman who's just started home business, it is so important, and I realize more than ever how important it is to have that built in to whatever brand you have, you know.
- 38:13SPEAKER_00: So I love that you just said what you said because you know, so many people say that, like, oh yeah, we we support female entrepreneurs, and I'm like, Where?
- 38:20SPEAKER_00: You know, like where?
- 38:21SPEAKER_02: Right, yeah, and I will tell you that in a lot of cases, you know what women need to support each other, and I think sometimes they don't.
- 38:32SPEAKER_02: And you know, I feel that if we don't support each other, nobody's gonna support us.
- 38:39SPEAKER_02: So it I that's a really huge tenet of how we how how we operate this business and you know what we do and and how we do it, and it's very inclusive and um sort of, you know, it in a in a way it's a bit of a you know grown-up sorority because we are sisters uh, you know, in this journey towards creating beautiful skin.
- 39:04SPEAKER_00: I love that.
- 39:04SPEAKER_00: I really love that.
- 39:06SPEAKER_00: So I want to ask you um a kind of an umbrella question for all the young female entrepreneurs out there, um, especially because your your product is so unique.
- 39:15SPEAKER_00: And I I would love for you to offer some advice.
- 39:18SPEAKER_00: Um, anything that you know you've learned along your way in your entire career that could maybe help somebody out there who's starting a new business or you know, like wants to go into like uh creating amazing devices or you know, something like that.
- 39:31SPEAKER_00: So I would love for you to share anything, any nuggets of knowledge.
- 39:34SPEAKER_02: I mean, I think um I really, really, really believe that your attitude in life dictates your success or lack of it in every area of your life, be it relationships, you know, anything.
- 39:50SPEAKER_02: Um I I I'm a very big believer in sort of universal energy and putting out what you want to get back.
- 39:58SPEAKER_02: And when you think, I always say, if you say you will, if you say you can, you will.
- 40:05SPEAKER_02: And if you say you can't, you definitely won't because you're you're putting, you're prescribing the outcome by your attitude and the energy that you put out there.
- 40:16SPEAKER_02: So I I'm a really positive, I try to be, and of course, you know, I'm human and I have my moments where negative thoughts creep in, but like I really try to be as positive as possible.
- 40:30SPEAKER_02: And I also try to really, you know, kind of be put surround myself with like-minded thinkers, right?
- 40:40SPEAKER_02: Because that determines, you know, the sort of that collective energy is super important.
- 40:48SPEAKER_02: So if somebody is telling you, no, you can't do this, go find somebody that says, yes, you can.
- 40:55SPEAKER_00: Absolutely.
- 40:56SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and and if you believe in yourself, I really do honestly think that that's 90% of the journey because you're putting your best foot forward and you're you're thinking your best thoughts.
- 41:10SPEAKER_02: And I know it's not that easy, and it's you know, it's much, it's it life is is much more complex than that.
- 41:18SPEAKER_02: But you know, before I go to bed every night, I I thank the universe for you know, all of the wonderful things, the health, happiness, and love that my children are going to enjoy, and the success of my business.
- 41:32SPEAKER_02: And you know, I just I try to put really positive thought out to the universe, and it it works.
- 41:39SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I love that.
- 41:40SPEAKER_00: Gosh, I love that.
- 41:41SPEAKER_00: I'm a huge believer in like, you know, we really do create what we want in this life, and I love manifest, you manifest your destiny.
- 41:49SPEAKER_02: My Bible is The Power by Rhonda Byrne.
- 41:52SPEAKER_02: I um it's a great book, I highly recommend it.
- 41:56SPEAKER_00: I'm gonna check it out.
- 41:57SPEAKER_00: I haven't I haven't read it.
- 41:58SPEAKER_00: That's amazing.
- 41:59SPEAKER_02: It's amazing.
- 42:00SPEAKER_00: I'm a huge student actually of Abraham Hicks, and I um, you know, when I got into that, I I really believe everything you said, and I and I've seen it in my own life as well.
- 42:10SPEAKER_00: And I I think that's the best advice you could ever give anybody, you know.
- 42:13SPEAKER_02: Totally agree, and I love that.
- 42:15SPEAKER_02: I'd love to hear that because the more people, you know, think that way, the more collective good energy is out there, which is what we need.
- 42:24SPEAKER_00: Absolutely.
- 42:25SPEAKER_00: Well, Dara, I want to thank you so much for your time.
- 42:27SPEAKER_00: This has been extraordinarily wonderful.
- 42:29SPEAKER_00: So thank you so much.
- 42:31SPEAKER_02: Uh it was great speaking with you as well.
- 42:34SPEAKER_00: Thank you.
- 42:34SPEAKER_00: And everyone listening out there, please go check out Dermaflash if you have not already.
