- 0:07This is Finding God at Work.
- 0:14Just a reminder that Finding God at Work
- 0:16isn't just a podcast, it's also an online
- 0:18course.
- 0:19Check it out at findinggodatwork.org.
- 0:27Our current series is Meaningful Work, Calling, Formation,
- 0:31Service, and Love.
- 0:33Is there anything that you do pretty regularly
- 0:36at your job that you just dislike doing?
- 0:40Just gets on your nerves, it's not your
- 0:42favorite thing.
- 0:43I have something that I did, so not
- 0:45my current job, but previous job that was
- 0:47like this.
- 0:48We had a database with a lot of
- 0:51information that multiple teams needed.
- 0:53And when I came in, I was asked
- 0:55to kind of help with cleaning up the
- 0:56database and seeing if there were processes that
- 0:58could be improved.
- 0:59And one thing I noticed was that there
- 1:02was somebody who was spending several hours every
- 1:03week copying and pasting information from the database
- 1:08into this Excel spreadsheet.
- 1:10And so I thought, couldn't we automate this
- 1:12in some way?
- 1:13And so they did eventually say, well, how
- 1:15would you figure it out?
- 1:15So what was frustrating, though, was that I
- 1:18could never fully automate it.
- 1:21I kind of half automated it, I got
- 1:22an export from the database that would then
- 1:24go into Excel and there were some, you
- 1:26know, pre-created formulas that would then feed
- 1:28things.
- 1:28But then I still had to do copying
- 1:30and pasting by hand.
- 1:31And it was so frustrating because I'm like,
- 1:32I know there's a way that this could
- 1:34be fully automated, but I don't know who
- 1:35to ask.
- 1:36And I would go to other Excel people
- 1:37at work and be like, do you have
- 1:39an idea of how this could be automated
- 1:40further?
- 1:41And part of the problem was that people
- 1:42were so used to using that Excel spreadsheet
- 1:45that it couldn't be recreated each week from
- 1:49scratch.
- 1:49There were other teams and other departments that
- 1:51were making manual updates based on the information
- 1:54in there over several weeks.
- 1:56And so if you come and do a
- 1:57weekly update and wipe out what they've done,
- 1:58it wouldn't work.
- 1:59So anyways, I found myself every Friday having
- 2:02to take a couple hours and do these
- 2:03manual steps to a process that I knew
- 2:05in theory should just be a couple of
- 2:07clicks and fully automated.
- 2:09With my personality, that really gets under my
- 2:12skin, like this idea of like if we
- 2:14just could do it the right way, this
- 2:16job would be way easier.
- 2:17And yet here I am stuck just, you
- 2:20know, shoveling the poop out of the barn
- 2:22is what it feels like copying and pasting
- 2:24in the Excel spreadsheet.
- 2:26So what's like that for you in your
- 2:28work?
- 2:29As we've been talking about the meaning that
- 2:33we can find in our work, again, meaning
- 2:35that may already be there, we've talked about
- 2:38calling quite a bit.
- 2:40How do we hear the voice of Jesus
- 2:41and distinguish his voice from every other voice?
- 2:45How do we listen to our own desires
- 2:47while also having an openness to doing difficult
- 2:49and unpleasant things?
- 2:51How do we make those decisions with the
- 2:53help of community and people around us?
- 2:55How do we pursue a call on our
- 2:57lives that may be bigger than just what
- 2:59we do for paid work while also taking
- 3:01up that responsibility to provide for ourselves and
- 3:03our loved ones?
- 3:05Lots of different aspects of calling.
- 3:08As we've looked at all those different aspects
- 3:10of calling, I hope that it's become clear
- 3:12that as disciples of Jesus, we should not
- 3:15expect to always love every single aspect of
- 3:18the work we do.
- 3:19We should, in fact, expect work to sometimes
- 3:21be annoying, unpleasant, distasteful, unlikable, not all the
- 3:26time.
- 3:26Right.
- 3:27And I'm not saying we should ignore our
- 3:28feelings or how we respond, but realistically, every
- 3:31job is going to have some things that
- 3:33you just dislike about it.
- 3:34That's just life.
- 3:35And that doesn't change even when we're we're
- 3:37following the call of Jesus.
- 3:38In fact, Jesus may call us to do
- 3:40unpleasant things.
- 3:41And a part of our obedience to him
- 3:43is being willing to lean into those things.
- 3:45So in this episode, I kind of want
- 3:47to turn the corner from calling to formation.
- 3:50And we're kind of looking at four aspects
- 3:52in this series, calling, formation, service and love.
- 3:57And so as we turn the corner from
- 3:58calling to formation, I want to look at
- 4:01how can we respond to those aspects of
- 4:06our work that we just really dislike?
- 4:08And is there actually a spiritual opportunity there?
- 4:12Because if you're like me, the way that
- 4:15you respond is just sort of like by
- 4:17gritting your teeth and white knuckling through it.
- 4:18Right.
- 4:19My tendency for anything that I dislike about
- 4:21my job is just to get it over
- 4:22with.
- 4:22Right.
- 4:23Figure out how to how to motivate myself
- 4:25enough to get it done and then forget
- 4:26about it.
- 4:27I don't necessarily look at it as something
- 4:29with deep meaning to be probed.
- 4:30It's just sort of like, well, it's there
- 4:32and it has to be done.
- 4:32Right.
- 4:32It's poop in the barn that you got
- 4:34to shovel out.
- 4:35You know, there's nothing more to it.
- 4:38But I think even though, you know, sometimes
- 4:41just being like, OK, let's get this done
- 4:42might be the right attitude.
- 4:43We might be missing on something that God
- 4:46intends to do in us and through us
- 4:50if we don't reckon with the things we
- 4:52dislike about our jobs with a little bit
- 4:55more sensitivity and openness to what the Holy
- 4:57Spirit might do through them.
- 4:58So I want to go to a couple
- 5:00of different scripture passages as part of this.
- 5:02So first, a really familiar scripture passage.
- 5:05This is when Jesus talks about taking up
- 5:07your cross.
- 5:08I'll read the one from the Gospel of
- 5:09Luke.
- 5:10So this is Luke chapter nine, starting in
- 5:12verse twenty three.
- 5:14And Jesus said to all, if anyone would
- 5:16come after me, let him deny himself and
- 5:19take up his cross daily and follow me.
- 5:21For whoever would save his life will lose
- 5:23it.
- 5:24But whoever loses his life for my sake
- 5:26will save it.
- 5:28We've talked about this verse before.
- 5:30It's a classic verse of just the nature
- 5:32of discipleship that just as Jesus went to
- 5:35the cross in obedience to his father for
- 5:37our sake and for the sake of the
- 5:39world, he calls us to take up our
- 5:42cross and follow him.
- 5:43But I want to focus on that phrasing.
- 5:45Sometimes you hear people talking about bearing a
- 5:47cross, you know, as though a cross is
- 5:49something that's kind of imposed on us and
- 5:50we just have to kind of tolerate it
- 5:52or put up with it.
- 5:53That's not what Jesus says.
- 5:55Jesus says, if anyone would come after me,
- 5:58let him deny himself and take up his
- 6:00cross daily and follow me.
- 6:03Take up is an active verb.
- 6:06So Jesus is saying that the cross, again,
- 6:08an image of suffering, an image of dying
- 6:10to himself, that's something that we actively engage.
- 6:14We take it up.
- 6:15We don't just tolerate it.
- 6:16We don't just white knuckle and grit our
- 6:18ways through it.
- 6:18We embrace it.
- 6:20We take it up.
- 6:22OK, what does that mean?
- 6:23Well, I want to go to another passage,
- 6:25probably a less familiar passage.
- 6:27This is from First Corinthians chapter three.
- 6:30And Paul is addressing a lot of issues
- 6:32in the life of the church in First
- 6:34Corinthians, and he's addressing the kind of factionalism
- 6:37that had arisen in the Corinthian church where
- 6:39some people said, like, hey, we're part of
- 6:41the Paul faction.
- 6:42And other people said we're part of the
- 6:43Apollos faction, Apollos being another early apostolic leader
- 6:47alongside Paul.
- 6:48Other people were saying other things.
- 6:51And so Paul's kind of addressing this and
- 6:52saying, that's not how it's supposed to work.
- 6:53You're not supposed to divide into these different
- 6:54personality led factions.
- 6:57Seems like it might be relevant for us
- 6:59here, even in the 21st century in the
- 7:01United States, right?
- 7:02Like, don't devolve into personality oriented movements where
- 7:06it's focused on someone other than Jesus.
- 7:08But what does Paul say?
- 7:10And we're going to kind of get to
- 7:11this idea of suffering in the workplace as
- 7:13we go through this passage.
- 7:15So this is, again, First Corinthians three, starting
- 7:18in verse six.
- 7:21Paul writes, I planted, Apollos watered, but God
- 7:25gave the growth.
- 7:26So neither he who plants nor he who
- 7:28waters is anything but only God who gives
- 7:30the growth.
- 7:31He who plants and he who waters are
- 7:33one and each will receive his wages according
- 7:36to his labor.
- 7:37For we are God's fellow workers.
- 7:39You are God's field, God's building.
- 7:42Okay, we'll stop there.
- 7:43We've got a few more verses to go
- 7:44through, but there's a lot even right there.
- 7:46So so one thing is Paul's kind of
- 7:48using two different images here, right?
- 7:50An agricultural image of like the church community
- 7:52as a field where something is growing.
- 7:55And then he also at the end, he
- 7:56talks about God's building.
- 7:58And, you know, you need outbuildings when you've
- 7:59got a farm and fields growing things, barns.
- 8:01And, you know, like we said, if we're
- 8:03going to muck out the barns, we need
- 8:04barns in the first place.
- 8:04So there's this kind of rural image that
- 8:07that Paul seems to have in mind.
- 8:08We've got some outbuildings.
- 8:09We've got the plants themselves.
- 8:11And what are we doing?
- 8:12Well, we're planting, right?
- 8:15I planted, he says.
- 8:17We're watering.
- 8:18Apollos watered, he said.
- 8:19We're seeing it grow, he says.
- 8:21But God gave the growth.
- 8:23So this image of the church, like as
- 8:24the plants in this field that are kind
- 8:26of growing up because of God's grace in
- 8:29them.
- 8:30And what Paul's saying is like, look, the
- 8:32point is not who does which task.
- 8:34The point is not who waters or who
- 8:36plants or who's mucking out the barns.
- 8:38Right.
- 8:38The point is that God is doing something
- 8:40in the community and we get to participate
- 8:41in it.
- 8:42And then he says these things at the
- 8:44end that are really key.
- 8:45He says, each will receive his wages according
- 8:48to his labor.
- 8:50And for we are God's fellow workers.
- 8:53Okay.
- 8:54Each will receive his wages according to his
- 8:56labor.
- 8:56Really important here in the bigger context of
- 8:58Paul's writing, this is not about earning something
- 9:01from God in terms of our salvation.
- 9:03We know salvation is a gift.
- 9:05That's part of the whole grace that's being
- 9:06announced that that causes this farm to exist
- 9:08in the first place.
- 9:09So that we are saved by grace through
- 9:11faith, as Paul says in Ephesians chapter two,
- 9:15and yet there is this sense of receiving
- 9:17something according to your labor, each will receive
- 9:20his wages according to his labor.
- 9:22And it goes with the second part for
- 9:24we are God's fellow workers.
- 9:26What Paul is saying is that even though
- 9:28God is the one who's bringing the You
- 9:31have a role to play.
- 9:32You have a task.
- 9:33You have a job to play in maintaining
- 9:35this farm.
- 9:36It's like a family farm where we're somehow
- 9:38we're the plants that are growing, but we're
- 9:40also the ones who are growing plants alongside
- 9:41God and God expects you to, to put
- 9:45in, you know, the, the sweat equity on
- 9:47the family farm and he will reward you
- 9:49for doing so.
- 9:51God wants to reward us.
- 9:52God wants to give us more of his
- 9:54life, more of himself over time.
- 9:57So we were meant to be motivated in
- 10:00the work that we do by this sense
- 10:01that God sees our work.
- 10:03He's pleased with it and he will reward
- 10:05it with more of his grace.
- 10:07There are certain graces that we can only
- 10:09experience if we put in the effort by
- 10:12God's grace and us to get to that
- 10:15place of, of God saying, well done here,
- 10:18come and share in this experience of working
- 10:20with me, we'll never know the grace of
- 10:22working with God if we refuse to work
- 10:24with him.
- 10:26Okay.
- 10:26So it's a very interactive image of us
- 10:29working.
- 10:29Now I do want to clarify this work
- 10:31is not limited to what we do at
- 10:32our job, right?
- 10:33The work that Paul has in mind here
- 10:35is anytime that we're putting out effort and
- 10:37obedience to God and obedience to Jesus' teachings
- 10:39to love God and love neighbor.
- 10:41So it includes more than our work at
- 10:43our paid jobs if we have a paid
- 10:45job, but if we have a job, it
- 10:47doesn't include less, right?
- 10:48The work that we're doing at work is
- 10:50also part of this work where we're God's
- 10:52coworkers, where we're going to receive this reward
- 10:55from the Lord.
- 10:57Okay.
- 10:58Let's keep going.
- 10:58So this is starting in verse 10.
- 11:00According to the grace of God given to
- 11:02me, like a skilled master builder, I laid
- 11:05a foundation and someone else's building upon it.
- 11:07Let each one take care how he builds
- 11:10upon it.
- 11:12For no one can lay a foundation other
- 11:14than that, which is laid, which is Jesus
- 11:16Christ.
- 11:18Okay.
- 11:18So, so now Paul's like mixing the metaphor
- 11:21even a little bit more.
- 11:22And he's saying, if there's a foundation to
- 11:24this whole farm, if there's a foundation to
- 11:25the buildings, right, what's the foundation it's Jesus.
- 11:29Jesus himself is the foundation.
- 11:30So, so again, Paul loves mixing his metaphors.
- 11:33Um, I don't know if, if, uh, his,
- 11:34uh, high school English teacher would have given
- 11:36him critiques about that.
- 11:37Um, but it's what we've got inspired by
- 11:38the Holy spirit in scripture.
- 11:39And so we're imagining God's the one who's
- 11:41giving the growth, but Jesus is also the
- 11:43foundation of all the building that's happening.
- 11:46And again, Paul says, this is by grace,
- 11:48according to the grace of God, given to
- 11:49me, like a skilled master builder, I laid
- 11:53a foundation and someone else is building upon
- 11:55it, but each one take care how he
- 11:59builds upon it.
- 11:59So the starting place again, is the grace
- 12:02of God.
- 12:02The starting place is the good news about
- 12:04Jesus.
- 12:04The starting place is Jesus himself, his presence
- 12:06and life in the community.
- 12:07And then each of us has a task
- 12:09to do.
- 12:10We are called to build upon that foundation
- 12:12as God gives us grace.
- 12:13Paul's using himself as an example of that,
- 12:15but then he's also saying, this is true
- 12:17of you too.
- 12:18You also are building on this foundation.
- 12:21Take care then how you build.
- 12:24Now, what does it mean to take care
- 12:26how we build?
- 12:28Well, uh, Paul unfolds this starting in the
- 12:30next verse, verse 12.
- 12:31He writes now, if anyone builds on the
- 12:33foundation with gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay,
- 12:37straw, each one's work will become manifest for
- 12:40the day will disclose it because it will
- 12:42be revealed by fire and the fire will
- 12:44test what sort of work each has done.
- 12:46If the work that anyone has built on
- 12:48the foundation survives, he will receive a reward.
- 12:50If anyone's work is burned up, he will
- 12:52suffer loss, though he himself will be saved,
- 12:55but only as through fire.
- 12:58Okay.
- 12:59Whoa, suddenly we're dealing with a passage about
- 13:01divine judgment, but did you get what Paul
- 13:03did there?
- 13:03He said, there's different qualities of the work.
- 13:05You might do work with gold, silver, precious
- 13:08stones that when they're tested by the fire,
- 13:10they make it through.
- 13:12Or you might do work with wood, hay,
- 13:13straw.
- 13:14And when it's tested by the fire, it
- 13:14just burns up and you still may be
- 13:16saved.
- 13:17Again, it's not a works, righteousness, salvation.
- 13:19God still saves us if we've put our
- 13:20faith in him.
- 13:21But if we're not willing to, to make
- 13:23those sacrifices that the work requires, if we're
- 13:25not willing to join God in the work,
- 13:28then it might still be something, but it's
- 13:31not something very valuable.
- 13:32It's not something that passes the test.
- 13:34It's wood.
- 13:34It's hay, it's straw rather than gold, silver,
- 13:37precious stones.
- 13:38So what are the gold, the silver and
- 13:41the precious stones?
- 13:42Well, this is when we're going to get
- 13:43back to where we started the episode, which
- 13:46is how do you respond to those aspects
- 13:48of your work that you dislike?
- 13:50I would contend that we build with gold,
- 13:55silver, and precious stones when we respond to
- 13:58difficulties, to annoyances, even to suffering at work
- 14:03as instances of spiritual opportunity.
- 14:20Now, why would I think of these things
- 14:22as spiritual opportunity?
- 14:23Okay.
- 14:23We're going to go to the third passage,
- 14:25right?
- 14:25This is also from Paul, Romans five.
- 14:29What does he say starting in verse three?
- 14:31Not only that, but we rejoice in our
- 14:33sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance and strength.
- 14:36and endurance produces character, and character produces hope.
- 14:40And hope does not put us to shame
- 14:42because God's love has been poured into our
- 14:44hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been
- 14:46given to us.
- 14:48Why would even suffering at work be a
- 14:52spiritual opportunity?
- 14:53Because suffering produces endurance, and endurance produces character,
- 14:57and character produces hope, and hope does not
- 14:59put us to shame.
- 15:01Suffering produces endurance.
- 15:04Now remember, a couple episodes ago, I introduced
- 15:06that Dallas Willard quote, that what God gets
- 15:08out of your life is not the achievements
- 15:10you accomplish, it's the person you become.
- 15:12I think that's really relevant when we think
- 15:14about all the annoying things at work, all
- 15:16the difficult things at work, even suffering at
- 15:19work.
- 15:19Because what if God is using those things
- 15:22to shape our character?
- 15:24Let's just think about the character we might
- 15:26aspire to.
- 15:27Could you become a more patient person?
- 15:29I sure could.
- 15:30Well, how do you become a more patient
- 15:31person?
- 15:32Is it by being in an environment where
- 15:33everybody around you is just lovely all the
- 15:35time and never tests your patience?
- 15:38No, you become a more patient person by
- 15:41having to deal with human beings who are
- 15:43annoying sometimes.
- 15:44And so what if that coworker that's annoying,
- 15:47or that task that's difficult, or even that
- 15:49experience of pain in your vocation that's a
- 15:51form of suffering, what if that's an opportunity
- 15:54that God is using to produce endurance in
- 15:57you, to produce a Christ-like character in
- 16:00you?
- 16:02And again, what's the invitation?
- 16:03It's to take up the cross, to say
- 16:05yes, to say, I'm going to be present
- 16:07in this difficulty.
- 16:09And rather than just gritting it out and
- 16:10trying to get through it, I'm gonna receive
- 16:12what God might be doing in me and
- 16:14through me in this difficulty.
- 16:19Okay, again, I would contend that's what it
- 16:21means to build with precious work, to build
- 16:24with gold, with silver, with precious stones, to
- 16:28build in a way that will lead to
- 16:29the reward that we deeply desire from God.
- 16:33So what could that look like for you
- 16:35this week?
- 16:36What could it look like for you to
- 16:37take up your cross at work?
- 16:39To have confidence that suffering produces endurance and
- 16:43endurance produces character and character produces hope, to
- 16:46build with gold, with silver, with precious stones,
- 16:50to be God's coworker, to join him in
- 16:52the work with that view that he will
- 16:54reward you.
- 16:55What could that look like in your work
- 16:57this week?
- 16:58I wanna encourage two ways to think about
- 17:01it.
- 17:01One is a metaphor, and this is spiritual
- 17:04sandpaper.
- 17:05As we're talking about building and building work,
- 17:08could it be that God is giving some
- 17:10abrasion to your life, right, so some abrasive
- 17:13experiences, so that you can sand down some
- 17:16rough edges in your character.
- 17:18So when you're facing a difficulty, don't just
- 17:21think about the difficulty, think, oh, could this
- 17:24be spiritual sandpaper?
- 17:25What could this be sanding down in me?
- 17:27If you find that you're losing your patience
- 17:29with something, oh, maybe God is sanding down
- 17:32my impatience.
- 17:33And see it not just as the task
- 17:35that needs to be done, the barn that
- 17:36needs to be mucked out, but as a
- 17:37spiritual opportunity to grow in Christ-like character,
- 17:41in patience, in that example.
- 17:43Because that's the first way, is when you
- 17:44face the difficulty, when you face the annoyance,
- 17:47to ask, could this be spiritual sandpaper, right?
- 17:51And the second thing is, once you've asked
- 17:53that, to ask for God's presence.
- 17:56I find it helpful even to just put
- 17:57my hands open, take them off the keyboard,
- 17:59put them open and up, and say, God,
- 18:01I welcome you here in this, fill in
- 18:04the blank, in this annoying task, in this
- 18:06copying and pasting in Excel that should be
- 18:08automated if I just knew how to do
- 18:09it better, I welcome you.
- 18:12And even just that little posture, that little
- 18:14pivot of welcoming God's presence, that can help
- 18:17you take up your cross, that can help
- 18:19you engage the work, that can help you
- 18:20be God's fellow worker, building in his field,
- 18:25in his building.
- 18:28Lord Jesus, thank you that you make us
- 18:31women and men who are full of your
- 18:35grace, full of your power to do work
- 18:38with you that matters in the world.
- 18:41And that you know our frailty and our
- 18:43weaknesses and how easy it is for us
- 18:45to get tripped up and annoyed and impatient.
- 18:48Show us how to greet those moments of
- 18:51friction and abrasive experiences at work as moments
- 18:56where you are working on us.
- 18:59Jesus, do your work in us as we
- 19:00do our work with you.
- 19:06Thanks for listening.
