- 0:06This is the AST Space Mobile podcast and.
- 0:10We just basically come your phone and be seamless regardless
- 0:14of where you are. We don't want the user even to
- 0:16know that it's connected by satellite.
- 0:21Listen, the opportunity that we have is very, very, very large.
- 0:26Hi, we are live in the booth with Via Satellite at the SAT
- 0:30Show. I'm Rachel Jewett, Senior
- 0:31Managing Editor of Via Satellite.
- 0:33I'm here with my colleague Mark Holmes, Senior Editorial
- 0:35Director, and we're thrilled to be interviewing Scott
- 0:38Wisniewski, President and Chief Strategy Officer of ASC Space
- 0:41Mobile. Scott, thanks for joining us
- 0:42today. Thank you for having us.
- 0:43Yeah. So ASC Space Mobile, you've
- 0:46recently unfolded the Bluebird 6 satellite, which is the largest
- 0:49commercial communications array antenna truly a while to to see
- 0:55that in space. What's the status of the
- 0:57satellite in orbit and can you talk us through the launch plans
- 1:00coming up this year? Sure.
- 1:02Well, this is our first next generation satellite.
- 1:05When you think about the director of ice industry that
- 1:08we're creating, you know we want to be broadbands, you know
- 1:10broadband is our strategy and you get to broadband with big
- 1:12satellites. So that's why we designed and
- 1:14built out of Texas this satellite, it's the biggest
- 1:18ever. It's 3 1/2 times larger than our
- 1:19last five satellites, which were also the biggest ever.
- 1:22So it's going great. We launched it just before
- 1:24Christmas out of India and we unfolded it successfully several
- 1:29weeks ago, a little over a month ago.
- 1:31And that satellite is performing very well.
- 1:34It's done everything it's supposed to do.
- 1:36The hardest part is unfolding well and that's the that went
- 1:39successfully, which is great. And, and next, we're getting
- 1:42ready to release it for customer use.
- 1:44And so it's, it's this, this challenge of communicating with
- 1:49a big satellite moving 4 miles a second, 500 miles away to a
- 1:55regular phone with no changes of phone.
- 1:56It's a very significant one. And getting all that calibrated
- 1:59within our architecture is a key effort.
- 2:01And so this is really the, the first big satellite that we're
- 2:04able to do that with and build on that.
- 2:06And then throughout the year, we're going to be launching more
- 2:08and more birds. OK, we can go on to the to the
- 2:12next question. Spectrum for D to D has been
- 2:14such a key topic of conversation in the last few months after
- 2:18Spacex's Spectrum purchase an AST Space Mobile owned deal with
- 2:22Legato for Spectrum. Can you talk about why this
- 2:25Spectrum deal was important and will AST Space Mobile be looking
- 2:29for access to even more MSS Spectrum?
- 2:32Sure. So spectrum is critical in
- 2:35telecom, right. We all know that.
- 2:38And from the beginning of the company we designed our strategy
- 2:41around using cellular spectrum, the spectrum of our partners and
- 2:44we've been really good at building the ecosystem and
- 2:47building our partner base. We think we're the partner of
- 2:49choice with indirect device. And so we've done that with an
- 2:52add on product that can grow revenue for the operators and
- 2:55improve the network characteristics from reducing
- 2:57churn. And in doing that we can also
- 3:00use stranded spectrum or or loose spectrum assets and kind
- 3:03of recycle it through our our large array.
- 3:05And so that's been our strategy from the beginning and it's
- 3:08still our core strategy. However, if you could have more
- 3:11spectrum, you would right. And so that's why a little over
- 3:14a year ago we signed an agreement for long term access
- 3:16rights with the L band in the United States and Canada.
- 3:19And since then, we also acquired a, a company with I2 rights to
- 3:23the S band globally. And the at the core of it is
- 3:26more spectrum is better, It means more services, more
- 3:29subscribers and it's also strategic asset that we can
- 3:32control within our company and bring the bear through our
- 3:34partners. So it's a key part of our
- 3:36strategy now. I think it was one that we got
- 3:39out ahead of and when we did our deal, which is great and it's
- 3:42clear that that's the right strategy for the industry is to
- 3:45combine both backwards compatible 3 GPP spectrum access
- 3:49with our partners while also bringing spectrum to the party
- 3:51to improve services. Absolutely.
- 3:54And the just seeing the different operate like before it
- 4:00was just working with telco spectrum, but there's really
- 4:03been a shift to companies wanting to have their own
- 4:06spectrum rights for DVD. So it's been interesting to
- 4:08watch. And Mobile World Congress, you
- 4:11announced an agreement with Orange covering both Europe and
- 4:13the rest of the world. Can you talk about the
- 4:15significance of this? And I know you have a lot of
- 4:17mobile network operators, but the significance of this
- 4:20particular one with Orange? Yeah.
- 4:23And we really do view ourselves as the partner of choice for
- 4:26mobile network operators as they think about direct to device and
- 4:29that's because we help build their business together.
- 4:33We are have a very friendly architecture with how we build
- 4:36work broadband on narrowband. These are all things that are
- 4:38very valuable as they build their network.
- 4:40And so we have over 50 mobile network operators and many of
- 4:44them are investors who have nearly 3 billion subscribers
- 4:46amongst them. So that brings us to Orange.
- 4:48So Orange is one of the most significant players in Europe as
- 4:51well as Africa. And so we've had a long term
- 4:54relationship with Orange and they've been very eager to
- 4:56develop our services with us. And so this new agreement
- 5:00through Satco in Europe, which is our joint venture as well as
- 5:04in Africa is very significant because what it means is that we
- 5:08can bring more operators to bear.
- 5:09It's not just Vodafone in Europe and it's not just one player in
- 5:12Africa. So I think our desires to be
- 5:15have Open Access with all operators, we think we're the
- 5:18partner of choice for that and Orange is another step in that
- 5:21direction. We also signed Telefonica vote
- 5:24of Cone Ukraine, which is different than Vodafone and
- 5:27several others across Europe and during that important
- 5:30conference. I just want to, I just want to
- 5:33follow up on that. I mean, you mentioned you signed
- 5:36a number of deals at Mobile World Congress this year.
- 5:39Given the deals that you've already done, what does the deal
- 5:42flow look like for AST over say the next 12 months?
- 5:45And if we're having this conversation in 12 months time
- 5:48live in the booth, how many sort of contracts deals would you
- 5:51expect to do within that time frame?
- 5:54And just to refresh, you know, we have signed deals and got an
- 5:58investment with AT&T and Verizon in the US, Bell and Telus in
- 6:01Canada, Vodafone in Europe, rackets and in Japan, American
- 6:05Tower and Google are also investors.
- 6:07So these are pretty significant moves that we've made including
- 6:11signing a a large 10 year deal with STC across the Middle East
- 6:16and North Africa. So these are all really
- 6:19important to how we think about building the ecosystem.
- 6:21We can't go it alone, we don't want to.
- 6:23The 6 billion phones in circulation represents an
- 6:25enormous market opportunity that we're very excited about.
- 6:28So how to think about that with us?
- 6:29So we are planning to roll out our network this year, more next
- 6:34year, but but a significant amount of it this year in order
- 6:36to launch Commercial Services this year.
- 6:38And as we do that market by market, we need to think about
- 6:41how we're bringing operators onto the network.
- 6:42So today we have signed definitive commercial agreements
- 6:46with AT&T and Verizon and Vodafone and STC.
- 6:49And So what you're going to see from us is going in deeper with
- 6:53our relationships with our customers, bringing more people
- 6:55onto the network with very detailed legal contracts that
- 6:59allow them to basically offer this to all their subscribers
- 7:03and give us a vehicle to improve their network.
- 7:05So you're going to see us getting in deeper with all of
- 7:08our relationships today. You'll see a few new ones.
- 7:11There's a few that aren't aren't yet on the network.
- 7:13But primarily, you're going to see us going deeper throughout
- 7:15the course of 2026 with our existing base.
- 7:18Is there a particular region of the world that you think has
- 7:20really like particularly strong potential for consumer adoption
- 7:24for deity? Yeah, it's a great question
- 7:27because the world is very large, right?
- 7:29And The funny thing about space is you'll see a lot of companies
- 7:33that say, well, I'm going to build a network, but it's, it's
- 7:35global. You need 10 years, $10 billion
- 7:38and it's a very probable problematic challenge.
- 7:40And so as we think about prioritizing markets, we've gone
- 7:43in deep with our partners, obviously, and some of our
- 7:45partners are in the US and Canada and Europe and Japan, the
- 7:48US government. And so those are very logical
- 7:50places to start. But what we found is that that
- 7:54the consumer wants to be connected.
- 7:56We all know this. In the last 30-40 years, we've
- 7:59all gotten a computer on our desk and a phone in our pocket.
- 8:01That's how we stay connected to the world.
- 8:03And what we see is market by market.
- 8:06The demand shape might be a little different, but the desire
- 8:11to have connectivity both as a marking ploy and as a network
- 8:14solve is very significant. Whether that's people with
- 8:17ability to pay who want the convenience factor, people who
- 8:20legitimately don't have good connectivity and will pay as a
- 8:23portion of their disposable income or people that just want
- 8:26to have that promise fulfilled of being connected all the time,
- 8:29which increasingly we need and are desperate to have.
- 8:31So that's really what we see in every market really we with very
- 8:35with limited exception, we've seen significant demand from
- 8:38from all, all the major markets. We of course are going to
- 8:41prioritize the big markets first, but we see a demand curve
- 8:45that we can monetize and, and and help the operators support
- 8:49their network across the world. Yeah.
- 8:51So we've been talking about commercial and I want to ask a
- 8:53little bit about the defense business.
- 8:54So the company recently got a big Space Development Agency
- 8:58contract and the first overall award for the SDA's Europa
- 9:01effort. So can you give us a little bit
- 9:04more contacts on what AST Space Mobile will be doing for Space
- 9:07Development Agency and then kind of the significance of what this
- 9:10award means? Sure.
- 9:12And the the defense market is a good one for space.
- 9:17You know, we've been primarily built our business around the
- 9:19commercial market. But if we if we were a space
- 9:23company to build only around the commercial market would be the
- 9:24first ever. So the defense market has made a
- 9:27lot of sense over the last couple years as we've deployed
- 9:30network and they've seen what this kind of brand new
- 9:33one-of-a-kind architecture can do because when you have a large
- 9:35array in low Earth orbit, it facilitates a number of
- 9:38communications and non communications use cases.
- 9:40So today what you've seen is over 10 contracts that was
- 9:43signed over the last two years, including testing we're doing on
- 9:46orbit today for radar applications for many different
- 9:50type of communications applications, some that are
- 9:53solved today, others that are not solved today.
- 9:55Anytime you want to do radar, you want to have a big antenna
- 9:59and we have a very big array in low Earth orbit.
- 10:02And anytime you want to talk to something that's more than just
- 10:05a, a backpack or an antenna on a, on a, on a plane, you want to
- 10:10have something that's low profile that is 3 GPP
- 10:12compatible. I can do number of different
- 10:14waveforms. So what you're seeing from us is
- 10:16a number of contracts, several of the SDA including the more
- 10:20recent, most recent one for Europa, which will develop a
- 10:23number of specific secure communications capabilities that
- 10:28ultimately will feed large contracts.
- 10:30And so for us, the vision that we've painted is 1 where we have
- 10:34up to 10 different use cases and communications and non
- 10:36communications, each of which could be a a future program of
- 10:39record for the US government and a very valuable asset for
- 10:43Americans. Just one very, very quick
- 10:46question before we we wrap up. You talked about the defence
- 10:49market there and I'm just sort of curious in terms of like the
- 10:53revenue balance between defence and commercial maybe in three
- 10:57years time, what would you expect that balance to be?
- 11:00Yeah. So it's a, it's a great
- 11:01question. And and we we're building a new
- 11:03market and the market sizes put forward for direct device are,
- 11:07are quite astronomical. So we we know that we're going
- 11:10to be leading that market. We're going to be pushing that
- 11:12market. We're going to be developing the
- 11:13market in a very good way with our partners.
- 11:15But the split between we, we think both commercial and
- 11:18government could be billion dollar businesses for us, multi
- 11:20billion dollar businesses for us over the long run.
- 11:23And in the near term, we'll probably see a balance kind of
- 11:255050 maybe even skewed a little towards the fence.
- 11:28But over time, we expect commercial to outpace it and
- 11:31that's a key part of our strategy in 2027 and 2020.
- 11:34Eight OK well, Scott it's been an absolute pleasure to to talk
- 11:37to you today It's great to talk to a company with such big and
- 11:40bold ambitions like AST space mobile We wish you a great rest
- 11:44of that show and and all the best for the rest of the year

- 12:15technology we can really affect billion lives.
- 12:18AFT Space Mobile is the only company that has good technology
- 12:23to deliver cellular broadband connectivity directly from space
- 12:27to do everyday smartphone. People will just basically turn
- 12:30their phone and be seamless, regardless of where you are.
- 12:34We don't want the user even to know that it's connected by
