- Lucas: Hey Luna, ready for episode 187? Today we're doing something super basic but essential: numbers from zero to ten in Spanish. Luna: Oh, I've been wanting to practice counting! I know some from before, but let's start from scratch. Lucas: Exactly. Let's begin with zero: cero. Say it with me: cero. Luna: Cero. That's easy. Like 'zero' but with a soft 'th' sound in some accents, right? Lucas: Yeah, in Spain it's often with a 'th', but in Latin America it's like 'seh-roh'. Both are fine. Now number one: uno. Luna: Uno. That's like 'uno' in Italian, easy. Lucas: Yes. Two: dos. Say it. Luna: Dos. Like 'dose' without the e. Lucas: Perfect. Three: tres. Luna: Tres. That's almost like 'trace'. Lucas: Four: cuatro. Luna: Cuatro. Ooh, that's a bit of a mouthful. Lucas: You got it. Five: cinco. Luna: Cinco. Like 'sink-oh'. Lucas: Six: seis. Luna: Seis. That sounds like 'says'. Lucas: Seven: siete. Luna: Siete. Like 'see eh tay'. Lucas: Eight: ocho. Luna: Ocho. Like 'oh-cho'. Lucas: Nine: nueve. Luna: Nueve. That's like 'noo eh veh'. Lucas: And ten: diez. Luna: Diez. Like 'dee-ess'. Lucas: Good. Let's say them all together slowly: cero, uno, dos, tres, cuatro, cinco, seis, siete, ocho, nueve, diez. Luna: Cero, uno, dos, tres, cuatro, cinco, seis, siete, ocho, nueve, diez. Lucas: Now let's try a little conversation. If I ask '¿Cuántos años tienes?' — how old are you? You can say 'Tengo' plus your age. For example, tengo diez años. Luna: Tengo diez años. I'm ten years old. Lucas: Right. Or if you have two apples, you say 'tengo dos manzanas'. Luna: Tengo dos manzanas. I have two apples. Lucas: Let's practice a bit more. I'll say a number, you repeat. Tres. Luna: Tres. Lucas: Siete. Luna: Siete. Lucas: Diez. Luna: Diez. Lucas: Now let's count backwards from ten to zero. Diez, nueve, ocho... Luna: Diez, nueve, ocho, siete, seis, cinco, cuatro, tres, dos, uno, cero. Lucas: You did it! You know, Fexingo is all about helping you make progress like this. If you're finding it useful, a few listeners help keep the show going through buy me a coffee dot com slash fexingo. It's totally optional, but it helps us keep making episodes. Luna: Yeah, it's nice that the show stays ad-free because of that. Anyway, let's practice one more time. Give me a random number, Lucas. Lucas: How about cuatro? Luna: Cuatro. Got it. Lucas: And now let's use numbers in a sentence. I'll say 'Tengo' and you finish with a number and something you have. Tengo... Luna: Tengo tres libros. Lucas: I have three books. Or 'Tengo cinco dedos en una mano'. Luna: Tengo cinco dedos en una mano. I have five fingers on one hand. Lucas: Great. So remember: cero, uno, dos, tres, cuatro, cinco, seis, siete, ocho, nueve, diez. Practice counting things you see around you. Luna: I'll count the cups in my kitchen. One cup, dos cups... no, una taza, dos tazas. Lucas: Exactly! See you next time for more Spanish. Keep practicing! Luna: Hasta luego!
