- 0:00Zephaniah chapter 2 First let's pray.
- 0:04Dear God, please give us wisdom and insight as we read through
- 0:07this chapter in Jesus name. It starts out chapter 2.
- 0:13Gather together, gather yourselves together, you
- 0:16shameful nation, before the decree takes effect and that day
- 0:21passes like windblown chaff. Before the Lord's fierce anger
- 0:26comes upon you, before the day of the Lord's wrath comes upon
- 0:31you. Seek the Lord, all you humble of
- 0:35the land, you who do what he commands.
- 0:38Seek righteousness. Seek humility.
- 0:41Perhaps you will be sheltered on the day of the Lord's anger.
- 0:46So I think you know, this is something that all of us, you
- 0:49know, this is written to Judah, but I think this is something
- 0:53all of us should think about because God will treat everyone
- 0:57the same. And if we are not right with the
- 1:00Lord, these are warnings like the prophets back then were
- 1:03saying that before the Lord's anger comes, before the day of
- 1:09the Lord's wrath, seek the Lord, seek righteousness, seek
- 1:14humility. And then here's what the reward
- 1:16is for that. Perhaps you will be sheltered on
- 1:19the day of the Lord's anger. So there is a reward for that.
- 1:23And anyone who puts this off is really being foolish because
- 1:31we're just going to make ourselves subject to God's wrath
- 1:34if we don't get right with God. So then it goes on to talk, it
- 1:40says Gaza will be abandoned and Ashkelon will left in ruins.
- 1:46Now this is really interesting. I had a note because I had read
- 1:49this before in the Bible and I thought about I wrote down 10723
- 1:56after this question mark because it's talking about the day of
- 2:00the Lord. The day of the Lord has not come
- 2:02yet. So this is a future prophecy.
- 2:05And then it says Gaza will be abandoned.
- 2:09Does anybody pay attention to what's going on right now in
- 2:12Gaza? If you've seen any footage of
- 2:15it, Little by little, it's being destroyed because of Hamas,
- 2:19because of what Hamas did on October 7th, 2023.
- 2:24And it's just very interesting that these things are occurring
- 2:28and Hamas is not willing to give up the hostages.
- 2:33Therefore, more war is coming at them because they won't give up
- 2:38the hostages. If they would give up the
- 2:40hostages, then all this would stop.
- 2:43But apparently, it isn't going to stop because at some point in
- 2:48the future, and could this be now?
- 2:49I mean, if you look at the pictures of what's happening
- 2:51there, I mean, high rise buildings are getting flattened.
- 2:55And, and I just don't, you know, especially when you see this
- 2:59prophecy here talking about the future, talking about before the
- 3:03day of the Lord and it's talking about Gaza being will be
- 3:07abandoned and Ashkelon and Ashkelon is not left in ruins
- 3:12today, but Ashkelon exists, it's in Israel and it says it's left
- 3:16in ruins. So again, these are things that
- 3:21have not happened yet. But is this prophecy alluding to
- 3:25sometime? You could see it play out this
- 3:28way today in 2025. And it's just I, I think it's
- 3:32just a word of warning to all of us that it's, it's really
- 3:36important for us to get right with God.
- 3:39Then it says at midday, Ashdod will be emptied again.
- 3:43Ashdod is in Israel and everything's fine there right
- 3:47now. At midday, Ashdod will be
- 3:49emptied and Akron uprooted. Woe to you who live by the sea,
- 3:56you Karathite people. Now I looked up Karathite in the
- 4:01blue letter Bible and it talked about if there was AI guess a
- 4:06definition or a word, it was in quotation marks of who they were
- 4:10and they were the executioners. I really find that, you know,
- 4:15woe to you who live by the sea. That's where Gaza is by the sea
- 4:20and they are called executioners.
- 4:23Don't you think that's really interesting?
- 4:25Now knowing everything that's happened over the last couple
- 4:27years, the word of the Lord is against you.
- 4:32Canaan, land of the Philistines. So the land of the Philistines
- 4:36is where Gaza is. He says I will destroy you and
- 4:41none will be left. So right now I mean nobody.
- 4:46I haven't seen anybody referencing Zephaniah 2, but
- 4:50this really sounds interesting. Based on current events, literal
- 4:54events happening today, the land by the sea will become pastures,
- 4:59having wells for shepherds and pens for flocks.
- 5:03So I thought, you know, well, maybe this happened before
- 5:05because obviously there were other entity, other nations that
- 5:10came against these areas and took them over and so forth.
- 5:14And maybe that could have been, you know, fulfilled at one time
- 5:18in the past. But the only thing that's
- 5:19throwing me off about saying, yes, that's what it is, is that
- 5:23it's talking about the coming day of the Lord.
- 5:26And the day of the Lord is usually referencing the final
- 5:31judgement day when Jesus returns and there is a judgement of all
- 5:35people. The land will belong to the
- 5:38remnant of the people of Judah. Now this is interesting too,
- 5:44because at one point I was looking at some old maps of, you
- 5:48know, where who owned what. Now at the time of Solomon,
- 5:53David and Solomon, the IT looked like that land of Gaza was under
- 5:58Judah, under the tribe of Judah. And that was the designated
- 6:02that's the tribe that would have that land.
- 6:05And and then it the Philistines kind of that sliver of land,
- 6:10right there was no longer a part of Judy Judah when the the
- 6:19nation split in half. So Judah and Benjamin were
- 6:22together and then the 10 tribes of Israel were in the northern
- 6:25portion. Now from a map, you could look
- 6:28it up yourself to check this out.
- 6:29There was still that sliver of land that's now called Gaza that
- 6:33was there and that was called the Philistines area.
- 6:36And so that land wasn't occupied by Judah at at that point.
- 6:42So it was then it wasn't. But then I looked at a map from
- 6:46the time of when Jesus was in his ministry, and it looked like
- 6:49that was part of Judah during Jesus's time.
- 6:53So I don't know when again, it, you know, went away from Israel.
- 7:02So I'm not really sure, but it's again, these sometimes these
- 7:06prophecies are really hard to completely understand.
- 7:09But when you're talking about the end times and you're talking
- 7:12about things that are happening in the, you know, that countries
- 7:15or nations or areas that are in the news all the time today, it
- 7:19certainly makes my, it takes my mind there.
- 7:23I'll just say that, OK, that land will belong to the remnant
- 7:28of the people of Judah. So who are the remnant of the
- 7:31people of Judah? It seems to me if we're talking
- 7:34about if this is end times, there's the 144,000.
- 7:38Well, actually, I guess there would probably be 12,000 people
- 7:41from the tribe of Judah. So there's 12,000 from each
- 7:46tribe. But the interesting thing is the
- 7:48tribe of Dan and the tribe of Ephraim is not mentioned.
- 7:52So there are two. Other than that there are 12,000
- 7:57from each tribe, and those are the remnant.
- 8:00There they will find pasture. In the evening they will lie
- 8:04down in the houses of Ashkelon. The Lord their God will care for
- 8:09them. He will restore their fortunes.
- 8:13So that makes sense. You know, there's this
- 8:15destruction and then there's a restoration.
- 8:17And that's very much like a pattern that we see in in Bible
- 8:21prophecy about what God does. Now listen to this.
- 8:25I have heard the insults of Moab.
- 8:27Well, Moab is a portion of Jordan.
- 8:30It's kind of the like on a map, if N is up, it's kind of on the
- 8:35left hand side, like towards the bottom.
- 8:37So I guess that's like the southwestern portion of Joda of
- 8:41Jordan. I have heard the insults of Moab
- 8:44and the taunts of the Ammonites who insulted my people and made
- 8:51threats against their land. Again, that's interesting.
- 8:55When we're talking about right now in a few days, this two
- 8:58state solution is being talked about with splitting the land or
- 9:05you know, dividing up the land, I don't know.
- 9:06But it's land that God gave to Israel.
- 9:09And the UN is having this meeting on the 23rd.
- 9:15Interesting that it happens to be Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish
- 9:19holiday that this is happening and they are talking about this
- 9:24this land. And the other thing that's
- 9:26interesting is they did some sort of preliminary vote, I
- 9:29guess a week ago and they had 100 and 42 countries that were
- 9:34for it and either 10 or 12 that were against it and either
- 9:38either 10 or 12 of them abstained from voting.
- 9:41So the majority of the countries are for this two state solution,
- 9:47which they want it because they talk about peace and security
- 9:53and that's another thing that prophecy says when they say
- 9:56peace and security or peace and safety, then comes sudden
- 10:00destruction. So it's again, I think we're
- 10:03just like setting ourselves up for the abomination of
- 10:06desolation is what to me that sounds like we're getting close
- 10:10to. Therefore, as surely as I live
- 10:14declares the Lord Almighty the God of Israel, surely Moab will
- 10:18become like Sodom and the Ammonites like Gomorrah, a place
- 10:24of weeds and salt pits. So those Moab is not, I don't
- 10:30think Moab is like that. I really didn't look that up on
- 10:32the map to see what it is today, like what towns are current
- 10:35Moab, but you could do that and just look on Google and see like
- 10:38what's there today. So I don't know if it's a place
- 10:41of weeds and salt pits right now, but it says a wasteland
- 10:44forever. The remnant of my people will
- 10:48plunder them. The survivors of my nation will
- 10:52inherit their land. So now it sounds like Israel at
- 10:56some point is going to have a portion of southwestern Jordan.
- 11:02So again, that's something else to look for because Bible
- 11:07prophecy will happen. This is what they will get in
- 11:11return for their pride. It's talking about Moab and
- 11:14Ammon for insulting and mocking the people of the Lord Almighty.
- 11:22The Lord will be awesome to them when he destroys all the gods of
- 11:27the earth. This is like final judgement and
- 11:30it says all the gods of the earth.
- 11:31It's like all these things that people worship.
- 11:33God's going to make everybody know that you are worshipping
- 11:37things that are completely useless.
- 11:40Distant nations will bow down to Him, all of them in their own
- 11:45lands. Then it talks about Egypt.
- 11:48Kush, you Kushites too will be slain by my sword.
- 11:52Then it talks about Assyria, which Assyria is really hard to
- 11:56figure out because it's kind of like Turkey, but it's also like
- 12:00part of Iraq. So, and especially when it talks
- 12:05about Nineveh, cause Nineveh is in Iraq.
- 12:07It's a little bit like, I guess southwestern of Mosul and Mosul,
- 12:12I think is modern day Babylon or that's where Babylon was.
- 12:16So it's really interesting that these ancient cities, that's
- 12:21where Babylon was when the tower of Babylon, I mean, that's where
- 12:24it was built and that was what made God angry.
- 12:27So it's it's kind of you're seeing the same area being
- 12:31talked about. So this is called like Assyria,
- 12:34but whether it's like Turkey is involved with it, but it's
- 12:38really about Iraq. I would say Iraq because it's
- 12:43brings up Nineveh. So he will stretch out.
- 12:46This is talking about the Lord. He will stretch out his hand
- 12:48against the north and destroy Assyria, leaving Nineveh utterly
- 12:54desolate and dry as the desert flocks and herds will lie down
- 13:00there, creatures of every kind. The desert owl and the screech
- 13:04owl will roost on her columns. Their hooting will echo through
- 13:09the windows. Rubble will fill the doorways.
- 13:12The beams of cedar will be exposed.
- 13:15This is the city of revelry that lived in safety, she said to
- 13:21herself. I am the one and there is none
- 13:25besides me. What a rune she has become a
- 13:30lair for wild beast. All who pass by her scoff and
- 13:34shake their fist. Now that's the end of chapter 2.
- 13:38But what I thought when I read this, the this quote of I am the
- 13:44one and there is none besides me.
- 13:47That's what God says often throughout Scripture.
- 13:51There is none besides me. Like he keeps saying that
- 13:55throughout Scripture. And then she said to herself,
- 13:59and it's interesting that it's a female.
- 14:02I am the one and there is none besides me.
- 14:06So then I thought about Mystery Babylon because there are there
- 14:13are numerous references to this and and then also to Nineveh.
- 14:19So Nineveh is referred to as the great city and Nineveh gets
- 14:24compared to Jerusalem, which is also called the great city at
- 14:28one point. So there's multiple pieces of
- 14:30Scripture, but like in Jonah, in the book of Jonah in chapter 1,
- 14:35chapter 3, chapter 4, many times Nineveh is referred to as the
- 14:41great city. And then it does talk about
- 14:45Jerusalem as the great city also.
- 14:48And remember, it was also talking about Jerusalem being,
- 14:55you know, it the compared to like Sodom and well, actually,
- 15:01no, that wasn't that was like Moab would become like Sodom and
- 15:04Gomorrah. But there is a there is
- 15:06scripture where it does say that to say that about Jerusalem as
- 15:11well. So I'm going to just search
- 15:14great city because like I said, it's interesting when you see
- 15:19it. So back in the book of Genesis,
- 15:23chapter 10, verse 12, and it says and resin, which is between
- 15:27Nineveh and Kala, which is the great city.
- 15:31So it's somewhere in that area of Iraq.
- 15:34And it actually occurs in the Bible like 74 times in 34
- 15:38verses. So I won't really read all of
- 15:40these, but in Jonah it says go to the great city of Nineveh in
- 15:44chapter 1, chapter 2, the great city of Nineveh.
- 15:48And then in Revelation 8 it says the bodies this is talking about
- 15:52the two witnesses will lie in the public square of the great
- 15:57city which is figuratively called Sodom and Egypt where
- 16:03their Lord was crucified. So this is talking about
- 16:07Jerusalem because that's where Jesus was crucified and it's
- 16:11figuratively called Sodom. And Egypt, well, Egypt is known
- 16:16for a lot of things that are, oh gosh, you know, a lot of things
- 16:22that are against God. Maybe let's just say idolatry.
- 16:26And then Sodom is we all know about Sodom.
- 16:29So both of those areas that you know, like a very sinful place
- 16:34and and idolatrous. And so it it's doing these
- 16:40comparisons. And then in Revelation 1619, it
- 16:44says the great city split into three parts and the cities of
- 16:48the nations collapsed. God remembered Babylon the great
- 16:54and gave her the cup filled with the wine of the fury of his
- 16:59wrath. Then in Revelation 17, verse 18,
- 17:03it says the woman you saw is the great city that rules over the
- 17:09kings of the earth. Now, when I read this, this is
- 17:12what makes me think this is spiritual because it's symbolic
- 17:17and it's this great city that rules over the earth.
- 17:20Is it something that's been around for a long time that no,
- 17:24you know, like it's spiritual, like it actually affects the
- 17:28world today, but we don't see it.
- 17:30But that's the entity. That's the entity that wants to,
- 17:34you know, be God. And is that, I mean, I'm
- 17:39probably going to stretch it a little bit here, but is that,
- 17:41you know, Satan or related to Satan?
- 17:44I've mentioned this before. If you go back into the beliefs
- 17:47of ancient Mesopotamia and if you look up Inanna, she was like
- 17:53a goddess and she was this androgynous being.
- 17:57And then I think about what's happening in the world today,
- 17:59androgynous, you know, not being male or female, and about the
- 18:03things that people are doing through their bodies today.
- 18:06And I just think there seems like there is spiritual
- 18:10significance in this. And the Bible talks about the
- 18:13woman you saw is the great city that rules over the kings of the
- 18:18earth. So that's just, but you know,
- 18:21there's coming destruction to that city.
- 18:24Now whether that literally means it's going to be in Iraq or this
- 18:27to something that is spiritual, I don't know and we won't know
- 18:31until it actually happens. But it, you know, it talks about
- 18:37terrified at her torment, they will stand far off and cry.
- 18:41Woe, woe to you great city, you mighty city of Babylon.
- 18:46In one hour your doom has come. Now we know Babylon was
- 18:50destroyed. But this is a future event.
- 18:53And This is why it's called Mystery Babylon.
- 18:56And so it's like it's like an imitation.
- 19:01And in Revelation 1816 it says and cry out woe, woe to you
- 19:07great city dressed in fine linen, purple and scarlet and
- 19:12glittering with gold, precious stones and pearls.
- 19:16It's like a copy of if you look up linen, purple and scarlet.
- 19:22A lot of the the Tabernacle was designed like that and and so
- 19:29could this be a false religion that is being referred to
- 19:36because God instructed Moses when he was on Mount Sinai, he
- 19:41gave him details of how he was going to build the Tabernacle
- 19:43and everything. So then some of these details,
- 19:47if you look up fine linen, purple and scarlet, you will see
- 19:50that reference so many times in the, the design of the
- 19:56Tabernacle where God was going to, you know, be how the ark of
- 20:00the covenant and all of that. Like in the very beginning of of
- 20:05a place of worship that moved with the Israelites as they were
- 20:09wandering around. I mean, this Tabernacle moved
- 20:12with them. So again, it's just like a
- 20:14copycat of God. And that's a lot what we see.
- 20:18His enemy wants to be God. He wants, he wants that
- 20:21recognition. When they see the smoke of her
- 20:24burning, they will exclaim, Was there ever a city like this?
- 20:30Great city, they will throw dust on their head, and that yet they
- 20:33will throw dust on their heads, And with weeping and mourning
- 20:36cry out woe. Woe to you.
- 20:39Great city, where all who had ships on the sea became rich
- 20:43through her wealth. In one hour she has been brought
- 20:48to ruin. And then there's Revelation 18,
- 20:53verse 21. It says, then a mighty Angel
- 20:55picked up a boulder the size of a large millstone and threw it
- 20:59into the sea and said with such great with such violence, the
- 21:04great city of Babylon will be thrown down, never to be found
- 21:09again. So all of those things seem to
- 21:15make me question about Mystery Babylon.
- 21:19I mean, it kind of it, it ties into there is what my conclusion
- 21:24is. Now I'm going to read the
- 21:25questions and answers from the study Bible and then we'll wrap
- 21:28it up. So on chapter 2 it says, how can
- 21:33one feel safe in a world that's being destroyed?
- 21:37In the midst of horrible destruction?
- 21:39There's no shelter apart from God.
- 21:41That is why prophets were brutally honest about dark
- 21:45times. They remind us that so many of
- 21:48the things in which we put our trust, nations, armies, material
- 21:52things, idols, crumble before the wrath of God.
- 21:56There is only one thing that lasts, the steadfast love of
- 22:01God. Why was God against the
- 22:04Philistines? God regarded the Philistines as
- 22:07enemies because like many other nations, they had oppressed and
- 22:12opposed His people for hundreds of years.
- 22:15Like other nations of the earth, they had abandoned the faith of
- 22:18their forefather Noah. They had rejected God's self
- 22:23revelation, made obvious through creation, and had worshipped
- 22:29false gods and idols. Why reward Judah?
- 22:35Judah had broken his covenant with God and deserved nothing
- 22:37but punishment. But after the judgment, God
- 22:41would fulfill His promise to redeem and restore His people.
- 22:45How had Judah been insulted and taunted?
- 22:48The Moabites and the Ammonites were perennial thorns in the
- 22:52side of Israel. As neighbors of Israel, they had
- 22:55consistently threatened the people of God.
- 22:59The particular issue at hand here was the verbal threats from
- 23:03the two people groups. Shame was often associated with
- 23:06such threats, but the prophet assured the people that God had
- 23:09not turned a deaf, deaf ear to those thought those insults.
- 23:16And then it's it refers to Sodom and Gomorrah.
- 23:19Both cities were destroyed when burning sulfur rained down on
- 23:22them. That was in Genesis chapter 19.
- 23:25Did Moab and Ammon eventually worship the Lord?
- 23:28Moab and Ammon are not necessarily the only nations in
- 23:32view here, though this verse appears in the section directed
- 23:35to them. The nations mentioned mentioned
- 23:38in this chapter may symbolize the four points of the compass,
- 23:43Moab and Ammon to the east of Judah, Philistia to the West,
- 23:48Cush to the South, and Assyria to the north.
- 23:52This speaks of a time when, because of God's judgment, Moab,
- 23:57Ammon, and all the people of the earth will recognize God's power
- 24:01and will worship Him as the one true God.
- 24:08Why would Assyria say I am? The phrase could also be
- 24:13translated. Who says?
- 24:15Who says in their heart I Assyria's claim was that she was
- 24:21the center of the world, with no others vying for the position.
- 24:25This national egocentricism came under the scrutiny of God, the
- 24:30only true I Why would others shake their fists at Assyria?
- 24:35This gesture of contempt expresses the satisfaction
- 24:39others would feel that vengeance had been accomplished against
- 24:43the Assyrians, who were hated by many for their brutal treatment
- 24:47of conquered nations. And that is the end of chapter
- 24:512. We will get to chapter 3 next
- 24:54time.
