Transcript
- 0:00[SPEAKER_00]: You listen into a dead bug, bar cast, so sit back, smoke him if he got him, shut the fog up, and enjoy.
- 0:18[SPEAKER_00]: Janet Brown was a 50-year-old English nurse who was murdered by an intruder in their home
- 0:27[SPEAKER_00]: She lived in Radnitch, Buckinghamshire, with her husband and three children.
- 0:33[SPEAKER_00]: To this day, the case remains unsolved.
- 0:37[SPEAKER_00]: Now regarding this murder, what strikes the investigators the most is the brutality of the crime.
- 0:46[SPEAKER_00]: She was naked, handcuffed, and hanging from a chandelier.
- 0:58[SPEAKER_00]: and an investigate his own words.
- 1:01[SPEAKER_00]: There was an awful lot of blood.
- 1:03[SPEAKER_00]: And when you hear an investigate a say, an awful lot, keeping in mind how many crime scenes they must have seen, or then you know that there's an awful lot.
- 1:16[SPEAKER_00]: It's interesting to note that there are several investigators who believe that there are possible links to the murder of one Carolyn Jackson.
- 1:25[SPEAKER_00]: I was murdered two years later, but then miles away and would bone green.
- 1:31[SPEAKER_00]: The 50-year-old jewelry dealer who worked from home, she'd also been beaten to death and to die to head injuries and was found bound in the kitchen of her home.
- 1:43[SPEAKER_00]: She complained at least twice to the police that she was being stopped.
- 1:48[SPEAKER_00]: They didn't take a seriously now.
- 1:50[SPEAKER_00]: No disrespect to this woman, but if you saw a picture, you'd understand why the police didn't take a two serious.
- 1:57[SPEAKER_00]: Investigate his figure that whoever killed her, followed a home, wanted access to her safe.
- 2:03[SPEAKER_00]: You know this girl?
- 2:04[SPEAKER_00]: The only difference in the two crimes is when they found Carolyn Jackson she had a close arm, but to...
- 2:10[SPEAKER_00]: As I said earlier, if you saw the women, you understand why they probably decided to go against the nudity.
- 2:16[SPEAKER_00]: Now I say they, but investigators are unsure if it was a single perpetrator, more and more than one.
- 2:22[SPEAKER_00]: It's interesting to note that the earlier complaints that she had made the police, of course, there was the ones that she was being followed, but also that a man had showed up at her place, and knocked on a door, and she didn't let him in, obviously.
- 2:37[SPEAKER_00]: The only thing investigators could ascertain that we're missing was Jackson's 2,000 pound Rolex watch that she'd worn every day for 30 years, and a car GA bracelet, otherwise the contents of the safe remain there as they couldn't open it.
- 2:55[SPEAKER_00]: Other of the house had been ransacked, investigators split down the middle over the years on whether or not these two crimes are related to.
- 3:03[SPEAKER_00]: I personally don't think they are.
- 3:06[SPEAKER_00]: Gender Brown was found naked, handcuffed from the ceiling, and although there was no sign that there was sexual interference here, there was certainly an aspect of whoever did it, it was a power play.
- 3:19[SPEAKER_00]: There was some, they got off on it.
- 3:23[SPEAKER_00]: The humiliation, I just don't think that, I just don't think the crimes are related, and nothing was taken from gender Brown's home.
- 3:31[SPEAKER_00]: There are similarities, like I said, and I've mentioned, and also both homes had heavy security, but there was money in the area, so being security conscious wouldn't have been unusual.
- 3:43[SPEAKER_00]: And there had been breakins in the area, and the Browns certainly weren't the only ones who had security.
- 3:48[SPEAKER_00]: And for those reasons on this episode, I'm going to concentrate solely on Janet Brown's murder.
- 4:01[SPEAKER_00]: In modern-day media, we are inundated by stories of clickbait, twisted facts, the me two, the me three, the me form movement.
- 4:09[SPEAKER_00]: And nothing really is made to make sense.
- 4:12[SPEAKER_00]: Just to keep us clicking like rats at their kibble balls.
- 4:17[SPEAKER_00]: But what I do is I attempt to cut through the fatty layer of bullshit, because I just present the facts and let you know.
- 4:35[SPEAKER_00]: Janet Brown was born in Southampton, England, 1944.
- 4:38[SPEAKER_00]: And only child, she was a popular kid, good looking, who grew up into a popular teenager and a popular woman.
- 4:50[SPEAKER_00]: She eventually met a doctor at a hospital where she was a nurse.
- 4:55[SPEAKER_00]: And they married net three kids.
- 4:58[SPEAKER_00]: At this point, she decided to be a stay at home, mom.
- 5:02[SPEAKER_00]: and left her work and focused on the children for about 16 years.
- 5:06[SPEAKER_00]: Before returning the work as a research nurse in the public health and primary care department at Oxford University, Janet's husband Graham now was a senior executive at a pharmaceutical company working at a Switzerland so he was a whale on.
- 5:24[SPEAKER_00]: And with the two oldest children now attending university, it was just her and a
- 5:43[SPEAKER_00]: On the night of April 10th, 1995, Janet Brown was home alone.
- 5:49[SPEAKER_00]: A youngest daughter, Roxanne, was having a sleepover to friends' house, with her older brother Ben, away at university, and the oldest Zara, working and living in London.
- 6:02[SPEAKER_00]: No one at the John Radcliffe hospital remembers exactly what time Janet copped off.
- 6:16[SPEAKER_00]: Home to the family was a remote, 11-acre estate.
- 6:22[SPEAKER_00]: Just outside of Rattonich, valued easily over a million pounds.
- 6:27[SPEAKER_00]: It's said to say the family were well-off.
- 6:30[SPEAKER_00]: But with that kind of money, there were safety concerns that had been several break-ins in the area.
- 6:36[SPEAKER_00]: And Janet had helped form a neighborhood watch, and she had security systems installed in the house.
- 6:42[SPEAKER_00]: as well as a panic button in a bedroom closet and safety room.
- 6:47[SPEAKER_00]: Very similar to the 2002 movie panic room, with Jodie Fauston, where there's an impenetrable room where you can lock yourself away from intruders.
- 6:57[SPEAKER_00]: Set the alarm off, grab a soda, put your feet up, and just wait for the cavalry to arrive.
- 7:06[SPEAKER_00]: The only witness to that evening after Janet had left the John Ratcliffe to hospital was a neighbor.
- 7:13[SPEAKER_00]: She said that she saw Janet speeding down the road around 6 o'clock, heading away from her home and the town.
- 7:22[SPEAKER_00]: The neighbor, outriding a horse, said the Janet would usually slow down for safety concerns.
- 7:28[SPEAKER_00]: Say hi, but this time was different.
- 7:31[SPEAKER_00]: She sped by and rarely acknowledged the neighbor, who said the Janet looks stressed the upset about something, and it says the maid of the Janet Brown was murdered that evening between eight and eight, 30, so why was Janet going?
- 7:48[SPEAKER_00]: What upset her and why was she speeding away from the town?
- 7:51[SPEAKER_00]: Why there was no shopping area, a gas station, a place to get food, a seemingly remote area.
- 8:20[SPEAKER_00]: No one can save for sure what time Janet returned to home.
- 8:24[SPEAKER_00]: As the last witness to see her, was the horse rider, around six.
- 8:30[SPEAKER_00]: We can only assume wherever Janet was going.
- 8:33[SPEAKER_00]: She didn't make it or she turned around, changed her mind.
- 8:36[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, she meeting someone on the roadside rendezvous.
- 8:40[SPEAKER_00]: Police believe this could be the case and that someone saw Janet that evening.
- 8:46[SPEAKER_00]: and who now offer her 20,000 pound reward, because they suddenly believed that she'd gotten to her calm was driving in that direction for some reason.
- 8:56[SPEAKER_00]: But what was it?
- 8:57[SPEAKER_00]: And to this day, it still baffles investigators.
- 9:02[SPEAKER_00]: There have been some who've suggested that she was possibly having an affair going to meet someone.
- 9:09[SPEAKER_00]: A friend has ruled that out saying it's impossible.
- 9:13[SPEAKER_00]: And so if the police have to investigate it, but I'm not too sure that's a good idea because of my opinion.
- 9:19[SPEAKER_00]: No one knows no one not well.
- 9:21[SPEAKER_00]: And if you really want to hide something, you can hide it.
- 9:25[SPEAKER_00]: Husband was away, good looking woman, home alone.
- 9:29[SPEAKER_00]: She said we had plenty of opportunities.
- 9:32[SPEAKER_00]: But I guess until someone comes forward and says something different, all it is is a theory.
- 9:44[SPEAKER_00]: With the horse ride of being the last person to see Janet, we can only hide part of the size, what happened next.
- 9:57[SPEAKER_00]: She must have returned shortly before 8, and when she said someone was waiting for, well someone or someone to which has never been established.
- 10:10[SPEAKER_00]: She never made anything to eat.
- 10:12[SPEAKER_00]: Her purse was on the kitchen counter, and that seems to be, at the point where she was jumped or confronted.
- 10:18[SPEAKER_00]: At this point, it appears that she had run into the bedroom and pressed the panic button and the closet and attempted to get in there and lock herself away to which she failed, and she was beaten.
- 10:36[SPEAKER_00]: The autopsy showed that she had been struck over the head over 40 times by what appeared to be a crowbar, although this has never been found.
- 10:47[SPEAKER_00]: But with the measurements of the wounds, that's what they figured.
- 10:52[SPEAKER_00]: She was then stripped naked and handcuffed and hung from the ceiling, a light fixture in the living room.
- 11:05[SPEAKER_00]: And although the alarm was now sounding, the killer or killers were in no hurry to leave the scene to the crime.
- 11:13[SPEAKER_00]: Although investigators have been given a lot of details, what we do know is that who may have a bludgeon Janet Brown to death had washed their hands in the bathroom.
- 11:25[SPEAKER_00]: and proceeded to go into the kitchen and make themselves something to eat.
- 11:29[SPEAKER_00]: Keeping in mind they did this while the intruder alarm was sounding set and maximum volume.
- 11:44[SPEAKER_00]: Janet's body was discovered the next morning by a builder, Nick Marshall, and his teenage son.
- 11:53[SPEAKER_00]: We're doing some renovation work on Janet's garage.
- 11:58[SPEAKER_00]: She was discovered about 8 a.m. hearing the alarm and no one answering the front door that went around to the backslight doors.
- 12:07[SPEAKER_00]: So they've been smashed, and when they looked in, there was Janet, nude, hanging from the ceiling, or thing like a goddamn religious icon.
- 12:21[SPEAKER_00]: Realizing it was a crime scene, the father told us I'm not to touch anything, and they left, and they went to the neighbor's house, or whether the police were called.
- 12:35[SPEAKER_00]: The first thing that police noticed that there were no defensive wounds, it's almost like Janet let it happen.
- 12:45[SPEAKER_00]: Friends and family say she was passive, easy going, and she wouldn't have put up a fight.
- 12:51[SPEAKER_00]: She would have tried to talk away out of it and plead.
- 12:55[SPEAKER_00]: Back even.
- 12:58[SPEAKER_00]: But I guess it didn't work.
- 13:00[SPEAKER_00]: Police noted that although it looked like a burglary,
- 13:04[SPEAKER_00]: It seemed too planned.
- 13:05[SPEAKER_00]: The intruder had used glass cutting equipment to get through the first panel of a double glaze party of Thor, and then it smashed the second panel, and what Buggler brings handcuffs and mask and tape.
- 13:18[SPEAKER_00]: It appeared that nothing had been taken from the home, although there was a television and a video recorder that were unplugged.
- 13:26[SPEAKER_00]: Which begs the question, why go through all that trouble?
- 13:30[SPEAKER_00]: Going to a house, torture, and murder, it's occupant.
- 13:34[SPEAKER_00]: Take the time to wash your hands, go in the fridge, and then heat up leftovers in the microwave, beat them, then leave, without taking a goddamn thing.
- 13:44[SPEAKER_00]: I've given a spastic a calculator, and getting them to do your income tax, but just doesn't add up.
- 13:52[SPEAKER_00]: It's the only ones buying the narrative of this storyline.
- 13:56[SPEAKER_00]: were the ones who needed to be home by six and had a healthy retirement package.
- 14:13[SPEAKER_00]: Living away in Switzerland, making all that money, he could only see his wife as a financial train with all that money sitting in a Swiss back account.
- 14:24[SPEAKER_00]: He hired someone to take care of his problem, make it look like a robbery, and maybe just maybe, he'd hired a private deck to keep an eye on his wife, and she would play in a way, maybe on his last visit, he smelled another man's cock on a breath.
- 14:43[SPEAKER_00]: and he felt justified in the actions that he had to take.
- 14:46[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, who wouldn't be put out by this sort of behavior from your loving wife?
- 14:52[SPEAKER_00]: It's sinful.
- 14:53[SPEAKER_00]: Goes against the word of the Bible.
- 14:55[SPEAKER_00]: You know, all that stuff about adultery and whatnot, but apparently, just apparently the cops checked out the husband.
- 15:03[SPEAKER_00]: And he will clean it in the soul on a cripples boat.
- 15:07[SPEAKER_00]: And the only thing that they could pin on him
- 15:17[SPEAKER_00]: When Janet's family found out about her murder, they were shocked and distraught and equal meshes.
- 15:29[SPEAKER_00]: And when they were privately informed of the gruesome details, one could only imagine the pain they must have experienced.
- 15:38[SPEAKER_00]: After all, their mother was a high profile, popular member of the community.
- 15:44[SPEAKER_00]: And seemingly, at least on the outside, didn't have an enemy in the world.
- 15:49[SPEAKER_00]: So fish and chip-been cops set out to investigate the heinous crime.
- 15:56[SPEAKER_00]: Checking out the usual suspects, those suspects reacted in horror, because even burglars had a code, a community, when they had rules that they had to follow,
- 16:11[SPEAKER_00]: And it certainly didn't fit the M.O.
- 16:13[SPEAKER_00]: of anyone that they were running with.
- 16:17[SPEAKER_00]: Ground Brown was the police's number one suspect.
- 16:20[SPEAKER_00]: Ground must have known that he was an odd sea for killing his wife, but he cooperated fully.
- 16:26[SPEAKER_00]: And Cobbs had no reason to believe that he wanted to end his wife's life, especially in such a gruesome manner.
- 16:35[SPEAKER_00]: And that didn't appear to be any cracks in their marriage.
- 16:39[SPEAKER_00]: Nevertheless, that didn't mean that either he or his wife won play in a way.
- 16:44[SPEAKER_00]: It just means that investigators couldn't dig anything up, because at the end of the day, no one knows no one how well.
- 16:59[SPEAKER_00]: Although several autopsies revealed that the gender brown hadn't been sexually assaulted, while either alive or dead.
- 17:08[SPEAKER_00]: Investigate is still couldn't rule out a sexual aspect of the crime or motive.
- 17:14[SPEAKER_00]: Forensic psychologist said that the fact that she was bound naked and hung up like a sight of beef in a slight house shows a strong element of sexual sadism, and whoever did it, most certainly got off on it.
- 17:30[SPEAKER_00]: Which certainly doesn't sound like the typical M.O.
- 17:33[SPEAKER_00]: for a burglar.
- 17:35[SPEAKER_00]: but while we're on the subject of burglars and typical M.O.s.
- 17:40[SPEAKER_00]: There's several discrepancies that raise a flag on whether this wasn't actual burglary.
- 17:45[SPEAKER_00]: Number one, there were two cars in the driveway.
- 17:48[SPEAKER_00]: Number two, it wasn't even dark when the killer or the killers would have entered the home.
- 17:52[SPEAKER_00]: So this was a home invasion.
- 17:55[SPEAKER_00]: And for what?
- 17:56[SPEAKER_00]: Yes, sure the Browns lived in a nice area, but in no way with that millionaires, there was nothing screaming that there was wealth inside of that house.
- 18:04[SPEAKER_00]: And when they went inside, they unplugged the TV and the VCR.
- 18:09[SPEAKER_00]: And all they took was a top-of-war container of lasagna, hardly the heist of the century.
- 18:16[SPEAKER_00]: So the biggest unanswered question here was where was Janet Brown driving to that evening in an agitated state?
- 18:24[SPEAKER_00]: So agitated that she almost ran her friend on the horse out the road.
- 18:29[SPEAKER_00]: Had a husband confronted her about her avenue and affair, and Janet was after Warner Lover that the gig grew up, it had already been noted in print as well as witnesses, which maybe can't be translated in photographs, but Janet Brown was an attractive woman who had a sexual way about her, and she'd had many suitors in the past before settling, and maybe she'd got re-acquainted with one of those suitors, paste them off.
- 18:54[SPEAKER_00]: Something police may be uncomfortable about investing in this leafy, well-heeled community occupied by CEOs and bankers and actors.
- 19:06[SPEAKER_00]: But whatever the reason there has been no viable explanation of where Janet Brown was driving that night at 6 o'clock away from our home, away from the town, and yet...
- 19:19[SPEAKER_00]: Two hours later, she's dead.
- 19:21[SPEAKER_00]: By all of these facts, the general consensus is still that it's a bungled burglary.
- 19:27[SPEAKER_00]: It just doesn't make sense.
- 19:28[SPEAKER_00]: At least not to me.
- 19:32[SPEAKER_00]: But what does make sense is industrial espionage.
- 19:36[SPEAKER_00]: A failed kidnapping or contract killing.
- 19:40[SPEAKER_00]: And several investigators thought the same thing, although the higher-ups shut it down pretty quickly for reasons that are unclear.
- 19:49[SPEAKER_00]: After all, it's no secret that if you work in the pharmaceutical industry, yes women with shocks, and industrial spies are creative with trade secrets being worth their waiting gold, and with their number one competitor being China.
- 20:06[SPEAKER_00]: Show me a Chinaman you can trust and I'll show you a leprechaun or a pot of gold, and with every pharmaceutical head office being
- 20:18[SPEAKER_00]: One particular case that investigators are now looking at was in 2024 to Chinese medical device company executives were kidnapped and murdered in the Philippines.
- 20:29[SPEAKER_00]: The individuals who arrived in the Philippines for a business venture were abducted by an unknown group after their arrival.
- 20:36[SPEAKER_00]: Their families received ransom demands before the remains would discover four days later, as it's so crazy to think that Jenna Brown took the rap for a husband's sins, and that Graham Brown knew who his wife's killer or killer's were, but there was no point saying anything, because it weren't gonna put the egg yolk back into its shell.
- 21:04[SPEAKER_00]: In 2015, police announced that they'd isolated a DNA sample from the scene of the crime, and although they haven't released where, or how, we can only conclude that the DNA sample from the killers was taken from when they decided to get themselves a snack.
- 21:22[SPEAKER_00]: When they ran a check on their database, nothing came up.
- 21:26[SPEAKER_00]: and police tested 700 men in the area, and they were all cleaner than a spastic spoon at the eight-knob bowl of strawberry ice cream.
- 21:36[SPEAKER_00]: All while admitting at the same time that the perpetrator now may very well beat dead with the person at the time.
- 21:43[SPEAKER_00]: The lead investigator at the time detectives superintendent Martin Short commented, there is no theory to explain what happened that night which makes perfect sense.
- 21:54[SPEAKER_00]: There are aspects of every theory, which are contradicted by the facts and policemen deal in facts.
- 22:01[SPEAKER_00]: The intruder showed a fair amount of planning, yet Nyan Bar or a Trungeon.
- 22:07[SPEAKER_00]: Two types of tape, handcuffs, a glass cutter, and probably a torch.
- 22:12[SPEAKER_00]: I have a gut feeling that it wasn't a burglary.
- 22:15[SPEAKER_00]: Paid in React like a normal burglary, more than 99% of burglars would have run, upon hearing
- 22:24[SPEAKER_00]: This one not only continued his murderous attack, but Cooley washed his hands, and then one upstairs again.
- 22:30[SPEAKER_00]: We don't know the motive.
- 22:34[SPEAKER_00]: In most murders, once you've got the motive, then you're a long way to crack in it.
- 22:39[SPEAKER_00]: There are no indications that Mrs. Brown had a boyfriend, everything points to the fact that she was a respectable woman who doded on a family.
- 22:48[SPEAKER_00]: Her husband was definitely in Switzerland when she was killed, and he had nothing to gain by her death.
- 23:01[SPEAKER_00]: Now what makes this case that more frustrating is that one police announced in 2015 that they were reopening the case.
- 23:10[SPEAKER_00]: They made a statement that they were solely concentrating on the bungled burglary theory.
- 23:16[SPEAKER_00]: the Chief Investigating Officer in 2015, Peter Bienne, stated, "...my working hypothesis at the moment is that it was a burglar, or burglar's, a weren't particularly proficient.
- 23:29[SPEAKER_00]: They mistakenly came across Janet, and in an attempt to control her the handcuffeda, and when she broke free, ran into the bedroom and
- 23:43[SPEAKER_00]: Now for me, I don't even understand how the police have the balls to release a statement like this, because even the most armchair of detectives can pull this meaty ochre of theories into strips.
- 23:59[SPEAKER_00]: It is so off-target in every single way when you look at the details of the crime.
- 24:07[SPEAKER_00]: So these are a couple of non-profession burglars who show up with glass cutters, handcuffs, masking tape.
- 24:16[SPEAKER_00]: They enter a home where they know there's two cars.
- 24:19[SPEAKER_00]: So they know someone's gonna be home.
- 24:21[SPEAKER_00]: You're gonna be dealing with at least two people.
- 24:24[SPEAKER_00]: And when the home alarm goes off and steady running, you strip off the home owner, handcuff it to the chandelier and beat it at that.
- 24:32[SPEAKER_00]: And then they go microwave, left over, lasagna, and eat it with the victims bloodpooling around the feet.
- 24:38[SPEAKER_00]: I ain't buying it.
- 24:40[SPEAKER_00]: And you say in the Jones' irrespectable woman, so she wouldn't have an affair.
- 24:44[SPEAKER_00]: So let me get this straight.
- 24:46[SPEAKER_00]: Only non-respectable women have a face.
- 24:48[SPEAKER_00]: It seems incredibly naive to me.
- 24:50[SPEAKER_00]: Well, what if what investigating have you done on this?
- 24:54[SPEAKER_00]: This is my question to the police.
- 24:56[SPEAKER_00]: What investigating have you done on the fact that there was or was not in a fair, except for you saying that she was a respectable woman who cared for kids?
- 25:06[SPEAKER_00]: To me, it sounds like these are incredibly outdated views that are steering this investigation.
- 25:11[SPEAKER_00]: And what about the industrial espionage theory that runs rampant in the pharmaceutical industry?
- 25:18[SPEAKER_00]: A husband with a high-powered job living in Switzerland, head of this pharmaceutical company, and charge all these industrial secrets.
- 25:25[SPEAKER_00]: What better way to send the message than to hang your trophy away from a seal and like a side of beef?
- 25:32[SPEAKER_00]: Make sure the dot is not at home.
- 25:33[SPEAKER_00]: The message is clear.
- 25:36[SPEAKER_00]: Now hand over your secrets before we fuck with the rest of your family.
- 25:52[SPEAKER_00]: In 2020, a 20,000-pound reward was offered to anyone, a group-provide tips that would lead to an arrest.
- 26:01[SPEAKER_00]: A joint effort between crime-stoppers in Thames Valley Police has uncovered nothing.
- 26:08[SPEAKER_00]: No notable tips have come forward.
- 26:12[SPEAKER_00]: And to this day, the murder of Janet Brown remains unsolved.
- 27:45[SPEAKER_00]: This has been at that bug podcast, which I hope you enjoyed, until the next time.
