- 0:00Dot com Welcome to the Daily Quote, a podcast designed to
- 0:06kick start your day in a positive way.
- 0:10I'm your host Andrew McGivern for August 8th.
- 0:13Now today is a tough one. There's so many good holidays to
- 0:17choose from. It's international beer day for
- 0:20one, and I can definitely celebrate some international
- 0:23beers. It's also Happiness Happens Day
- 0:27and National Tarantula Appreciation Day.
- 0:30These are great holidays worthy of recognition on the daily
- 0:33quote for sure. And let's not forget National
- 0:37sneak some zucchini on your neighbor's Porsche day, which is
- 0:40awesome too. But I covered that one last
- 0:43year. With all these great contenders,
- 0:47I bet you're wondering which one wins.
- 0:50Well, none of them. Because today is International
- 0:55Cat Day, and if you're a cat owner, you already know that
- 0:59every day is basically Cat Day in your house anyways.
- 1:03But today makes it official. A global celebration of our
- 1:08feline friends and their mysterious, wonderful ways.
- 1:13International Cat Day was created in 2002 by the
- 1:17International Fund for Animal Welfare to raise awareness about
- 1:20cat welfare and to celebrate the bond between humans and these
- 1:24fascinating creatures. And honestly, it's about time
- 1:28cats got their due recognition. I can't believe I just said
- 1:33that, but the truth is, cats have been putting up with us
- 1:37humans for thousands of years. From being worshipped as gods in
- 1:42ancient Egypt to becoming the undisputed rulers of the
- 1:45Internet, there are over 600 million cats in the world.
- 1:50Pets, strays, and feral cats, each one with their own distinct
- 1:54personality. Some are lap cats who purr like
- 1:58tiny engines, others are aloof observers who judge you from
- 2:02across the room, and some are playful acrobats who somehow
- 2:06defy the laws of physics on a daily basis.
- 2:10But here's what's remarkable about cats.
- 2:13They teach us something profound about independence, self respect
- 2:17in the art of being comfortable in your own skin.
- 2:20Plus, they go to the washroom in little boxes with wood pellets
- 2:24in them all by themselves automatically.
- 2:28They just do it. Amazing.
- 2:32Which brings us to today's quote from Ernest Hemingway, who was
- 2:36famously a cat lover and once said a cat has absolute
- 2:43emotional honesty. Human beings, for one reason or
- 2:48another, may hide their feelings, but a cat does not.
- 2:54Hemingway understood something essential about cats that many
- 2:57of us could learn from. Cats don't pretend.
- 3:01They don't fake enthusiasm, they don't laugh at jokes that aren't
- 3:05funny, and they certainly don't stick around if they're not
- 3:07interested in your company. When a cat purrs, they mean it.
- 3:12When they walk away from you, they mean that, too.
- 3:16When they bring you a dead mouse at 3:00 AM, well, that's their
- 3:19version of a love letter, whether you appreciate it or
- 3:23not. There's something refreshing
- 3:26about that level of authenticity.
- 3:28In a world where we're often encouraged to be diplomatic, to
- 3:32smooth over our feelings, to be polite even when we're
- 3:35frustrated, cats remind us that there's value and honest
- 3:39expression. Not rudeness, but genuine
- 3:43authenticity. Think about it.
- 3:46Cats have mastered the art of setting boundaries.
- 3:50They'll come to you when they want affection, and they'll
- 3:53retreat when they need space. They don't feel guilty about
- 3:58their needs, and they don't apologize for being who they
- 4:01are. I used to hate cats.
- 4:03I think I can trace this back to my cousin's cat when I was a
- 4:06kid. I woke up at their house 1
- 4:09summer and his cat was on the bed.
- 4:12I reached out to Pettit and it scratched me across the face.
- 4:16After that and a couple other incidents I decided cats were
- 4:20evil assholes. I even went so far as to wear a
- 4:23pin that said I hate cats with a picture of a cat with crosshairs
- 4:28on it. I got in many friendly arguments
- 4:31with one of my best friends, the late, great Ian Cooper, who was
- 4:35a genuine cat lover. I said dogs are better.
- 4:40He disagreed. Years later, we had a serious
- 4:44mouse problem in the townhouse we were living in, and we
- 4:46decided to get cats. Not that my views had changed, I
- 4:52just disliked mice more. But the cats turned out to be
- 4:57pretty cool, and not just because they quickly solved the
- 5:00mouse problem. They had their own personalities
- 5:03and were authentically cool. Needless to say, when my friend
- 5:08Ian saw on Facebook that I actually liked our cats, he said
- 5:14I knew this day would come. But just for the record, I do
- 5:20admit that cats are cool, but dogs are still better.
- 5:27So today, whether you have a cat, love cats, or just admire
- 5:31them from afar, take lessons from Hemingway's observation and
- 5:36try a little more emotional honesty in your own life.
- 5:39Maybe that means speaking up when something bothers you, or
- 5:43allowing yourself to show genuine enthusiasm when
- 5:46something excites you. Be more like a cat, authentic,
- 5:50self respecting, and unafraid to ask for what you need.
- 5:55That's going to do it. For today.
- 5:57I'm Andrew McGivern, signing off for now, but I'll be Bach
- 6:01tomorrow. Same pod time, same pod station
- 6:06with another daily quote.
