- 0:00Speaker 1: Chapter twenty one, that we must rest in God above
- 0:05Speaker 1: all goods and gifts, above all things, and in all things,
- 0:12Speaker 1: Thou shalt rest always in the Lord, O my soul,
- 0:17Speaker 1: for he himself is the eternal rest of the Saints.
- 0:23Speaker 1: Grant me most sweet and loving Jesus, to rest in
- 0:27Speaker 1: thee Above every creature, above all health and beauty, above
- 0:34Speaker 1: all glory and honor, above all power and dignity, above
- 0:40Speaker 1: all knowledge and skillfulness, above all riches and arts, above
- 0:47Speaker 1: all joy and exaltation, above all fame and praise, above
- 0:55Speaker 1: all sweetness and consolation, above all hope and promise, above
- 1:02Speaker 1: all merit and desire, Above all gifts and rewards which
- 1:08Speaker 1: Thou canst give and pour forth, Above all joy and
- 1:14Speaker 1: tribulation which the mind is able to receive and feel
- 1:20Speaker 1: in a word, Above angels and archangels, and all the
- 1:25Speaker 1: army of Heaven, above all things visible and invisible, and
- 1:31Speaker 1: above everything which Thou, O God, art not. For Thou,
- 1:38Speaker 1: o Lord, my God, art best above all things. Thou
- 1:44Speaker 1: only art the most High, Thou only the Almighty, Thou
- 1:50Speaker 1: only the all sufficient and the fullness of all things.
- 1:55Speaker 1: Thou only all delightsome and the all comfort thou alone,
- 2:02Speaker 1: the altogether lovely and altogether loving, Thou alone, the most
- 2:08Speaker 1: exalted and most glorious above all things, in whom all
- 2:14Speaker 1: things are and were, and ever shall be, all together
- 2:19Speaker 1: and all perfect. And thus it faleth short and is insufficient,
- 2:25Speaker 1: whatsoever thou givest to me without thyself, or whatsoever thou
- 2:30Speaker 1: revealest or dost promise concerning thyself, while thou art not
- 2:36Speaker 1: seen or fully possessed. Since verily my heart cannot truly
- 2:42Speaker 1: rest nor be entirely content except it rest in THEE
- 2:47Speaker 1: and go beyond all gifts and every creature. O, my
- 2:54Speaker 1: most beloved spouse, Jesus Christ, most Holy lover of my soul,
- 3:00Speaker 1: Ruler of this whole creation, Who shall give me the
- 3:04Speaker 1: wings of true liberty that I may flee to THEE
- 3:08Speaker 1: and find rest? O When shall it be given me
- 3:12Speaker 1: to be open and to receive THEE to the full,
- 3:16Speaker 1: and to see how sweet thou art, O, Lord my God?
- 3:21Speaker 1: When shall I collect myself altogether in THEE, that because
- 3:26Speaker 1: of Thy love I may not feel myself at all,
- 3:29Speaker 1: but may know THEE only above every sense and pleasure
- 3:34Speaker 1: in measure not known to others. But now I ofttimes
- 3:40Speaker 1: grown and bear my sad estate with sorrow, because many
- 3:45Speaker 1: evils befall me in this vale of miseries, which continually
- 3:49Speaker 1: disturb and fill me with sorrow, and encloud me, continually
- 3:56Speaker 1: hinder and fill me with care, allure, and enter hangle me,
- 4:01Speaker 1: that I cannot have free access to THEE, nor enjoy
- 4:05Speaker 1: that sweet intercourse which is always near at hand to
- 4:09Speaker 1: the blessed spirits. Let my deep sighing come before THEE
- 4:15Speaker 1: and my manifold desolation on the earth, O Jesus, light
- 4:23Speaker 1: of eternal glory, solace of the wandering soul. Before THEE.
- 4:28Speaker 1: My mouth is without speech, and my silence speaketh to THEE.
- 4:35Speaker 1: How long will my Lord delay to come unto me?
- 4:39Speaker 1: Let him come unto me, his poor and humble one,
- 4:43Speaker 1: and make me glad. Let him put forth his hand
- 4:47Speaker 1: and deliver his Holy One from every snare. Come, O, Come,
- 4:53Speaker 1: For without THEE shall be no joyful day or hour.
- 4:57Speaker 1: For Thou art my joy, and without THEE is my
- 5:02Speaker 1: table empty. I am miserable and in a manner imprisoned
- 5:07Speaker 1: and loaded with fetters. Until Thou refresh me by the
- 5:12Speaker 1: light of Thy presence, and give me liberty and show
- 5:17Speaker 1: thy loving countenance. Let others seek some other things instead
- 5:24Speaker 1: of THEE. Whatsoever it shall please them. But for my part,
- 5:30Speaker 1: nothing else pleaseth or shall please save Thou, my God,
- 5:35Speaker 1: my hope, my eternal salvation. I will not hold my
- 5:40Speaker 1: peace nor cease to implore until thy grace return, and
- 5:46Speaker 1: until Thou speak to me within. Behold here I am, Behold,
- 5:54Speaker 1: I come to THEE. For thou didst call me. Thy
- 5:59Speaker 1: tears and the longing of thy soul, Thy humbleness and
- 6:03Speaker 1: contrition of heart have inclined me and brought me to THEE.
- 6:09Speaker 1: And I said, Lord, I have called upon THEE, and
- 6:13Speaker 1: I have longed to enjoy THEE, being ready to reject
- 6:17Speaker 1: everything for thy sake. For thou didst first move me
- 6:22Speaker 1: to seek THEE. Therefore blessed be thou, O Lord, who
- 6:27Speaker 1: has wrought this good work upon thy servant, according to
- 6:32Speaker 1: the multitude of thy mercy, What then hath thy servant
- 6:37Speaker 1: to say in thy presence, save to humble himself greatly
- 6:41Speaker 1: before THEE, being always mindful of his own iniquity and vileness.
- 6:48Speaker 1: For there is none like unto THEE in all marvels
- 6:52Speaker 1: of heaven and earth. Excellent are thy works, true? Are
- 6:58Speaker 1: thy judgments, and by Thy providence are all things governed. Therefore,
- 7:04Speaker 1: praise and glory be unto THEE, O wisdom of the Father.
- 7:10Speaker 1: Let my mouth and my soul and all created things
- 7:15Speaker 1: praise and bless THEE together, Chapter twenty two of the
- 7:24Speaker 1: Recollection of God's Manifold Benefits. Open, O, Lord, my heart
- 7:32Speaker 1: in thy law, and teach me to walk in the
- 7:36Speaker 1: way of Thy commandments. Grant me to understand Thy will
- 7:41Speaker 1: and to be mindful of Thy benefits, both general and special,
- 7:47Speaker 1: with great reverence and diligent meditation, that thus I may
- 7:52Speaker 1: be able worthily to give THEE thanks. Yet I know
- 7:57Speaker 1: and confess that I cannot render THEE due praises for
- 8:02Speaker 1: the least of thy mercies. I am less than the
- 8:06Speaker 1: least of all the good things which Thou gavest me.
- 8:11Speaker 1: And when I consider Thy majesty, my spirit faileth. Because
- 8:15Speaker 1: of the greatness thereof all things which we have in
- 8:21Speaker 1: the soul and in the body, and whatsoever things we possess,
- 8:26Speaker 1: whether outwardly or inwardly, naturally or supernaturally, are Thy good gifts,
- 8:33Speaker 1: and prove THEE from whom we have received them all
- 8:37Speaker 1: to be good. Gentle and kind. Although one receiveth many
- 8:43Speaker 1: things and another fewer, yet all are thine, and without THEE,
- 8:49Speaker 1: not even the least thin can be possessed. He who
- 8:54Speaker 1: hath received greater cannot boast that it is of his
- 8:59Speaker 1: own merit, nor lift himself up above others, nor condemn
- 9:04Speaker 1: those beneath him. For he is the greater and the better.
- 9:10Speaker 1: Who ascribeth least to himself, and in giving thanks is
- 9:15Speaker 1: the humbler and more devout. And he who holdeth himself
- 9:20Speaker 1: to be viler than all, and judgeth himself to be
- 9:24Speaker 1: the more unworthy, is the aptor for receiving greater things.
- 9:31Speaker 1: But he who hath received fewer gifts ought not to
- 9:35Speaker 1: be cast down, nor to take it amiss, nor to
- 9:40Speaker 1: envy him who is richer. But rather ought he to
- 9:43Speaker 1: look unto THEE, and to greatly extol thy goodness. For
- 9:49Speaker 1: thou poorest forth thy gifts, so richly, so freely, and
- 9:54Speaker 1: largely without respect of persons. All things come THEE. Therefore
- 10:01Speaker 1: in all things shalt thou be praised. Thou knowest what
- 10:06Speaker 1: is best to be given to each, and why this
- 10:09Speaker 1: man hath less, and that more is not for us,
- 10:14Speaker 1: but for thee to understand, for unto THEE, each man's
- 10:19Speaker 1: deservings are fully known. Wherefore, o, Lord God, I reckon
- 10:25Speaker 1: it even a great benefit not to have many things,
- 10:29Speaker 1: whence praise and glory may appear outwardly and after the
- 10:33Speaker 1: thought of men. For so it is that he who
- 10:38Speaker 1: considereth his own poverty and vileness ought not only to
- 10:42Speaker 1: draw therefrom no grief or sorrow or sadness of spirit,
- 10:48Speaker 1: but rather comfort and cheerfulness. Because thou Lord hast chosen
- 10:54Speaker 1: the poor and humble, and those who are poor in
- 10:58Speaker 1: this world to be thy friends and acquaintance. So give
- 11:04Speaker 1: all Thine apostles witness whom thou hast made princes in
- 11:08Speaker 1: all lands. Yet they had their conversation in this world blameless,
- 11:15Speaker 1: so humble and meek, without any malice or deceit, that
- 11:20Speaker 1: they even rejoiced to suffer rebukes for thy name's sake
- 11:26Speaker 1: Acts five verse forty one. And what things the world
- 11:30Speaker 1: hateth they embraced with great joy. Therefore ought nothing so
- 11:38Speaker 1: much to rejoice him who loveth THEE and knoweth thy
- 11:41Speaker 1: benefits as Thy will in him, and the good pleasure
- 11:46Speaker 1: of Thine eternal providence. Wherewith he ought to be so
- 11:51Speaker 1: contented and comforted, that he would, as willingly be the least,
- 11:55Speaker 1: as any other, would be the greatest, as peaceable and
- 12:00Speaker 1: contented in the lowest, as in the highest place, and
- 12:05Speaker 1: as willingly held of small and low account, and of
- 12:09Speaker 1: no name or reputation, as to be more honorable and
- 12:14Speaker 1: greater in the world than others. For thy will and
- 12:20Speaker 1: the love of thine honor ought to go before all things,
- 12:25Speaker 1: and to please and comfort him more than all benefits
- 12:29Speaker 1: that are given or may be given to himself. Chapter
- 12:36Speaker 1: twenty three of four things which bring great peace? My son?
- 12:45Speaker 1: Now will I teach thee the way of peace and
- 12:48Speaker 1: of true liberty? Do o, my Lord, as thou sayest,
- 12:54Speaker 1: For this is pleasing unto me to hear drive my
- 13:00Speaker 1: son to do another's will rather than thine own. Choose
- 13:06Speaker 1: always to have less rather than more, seek always after
- 13:12Speaker 1: the lowest place, and to be subject to all wish always,
- 13:18Speaker 1: and pray that the will of God will be fulfilled
- 13:22Speaker 1: in THEE. Behold such a man as this entereth into
- 13:27Speaker 1: the inheritance of peace and quietness, O, my Lord, this
- 13:34Speaker 1: thy short discourse hath in itself much of perfectness. It
- 13:40Speaker 1: is short in words, but full of meaning and abundant
- 13:44Speaker 1: in fruit. For if it were possible that I should
- 13:48Speaker 1: fully hope it, disturbance would not so easily arise within me.
- 13:55Speaker 1: For as often as I feel myself disquieted and weighted down,
- 14:00Speaker 1: I find myself to have gone back from this teaching.
- 14:04Speaker 1: But Thou, who art almighty and always lovest progress in
- 14:09Speaker 1: the soul, vouchsafe more grace that I may be enabled
- 14:14Speaker 1: to fulfill Thy exhortation and work out my salvation. A
- 14:22Speaker 1: prayer against evil thoughts, O, Lord, my God, be not
- 14:28Speaker 1: thou far from me. My God, Haste THEE to help me,
- 14:34Speaker 1: Psalm seventy one, verse twelve. For many thoughts and great
- 14:41Speaker 1: fears have risen up against me, afflicting my soul. How
- 14:46Speaker 1: shall I pass through them unhurt? How shall I break
- 14:50Speaker 1: through them? I saith he will go before THEE and
- 14:57Speaker 1: make the crooked places straight Isire forty five, verse two.
- 15:04Speaker 1: I will open the prison doors and reveal to THEE
- 15:08Speaker 1: the secret places. Do Lord, as thou sayest, and let
- 15:14Speaker 1: all evil thoughts fly away before thy face. This is
- 15:19Speaker 1: my hope and my only comfort to fly unto THEE.
- 15:24Speaker 1: In all tribulation to hope in THEE. To call upon
- 15:29Speaker 1: THEE from my heart, and patiently wait for Thy loving kindness,
- 15:36Speaker 1: a prayer for enlightenment of the mind. Enlighten me, blessed
- 15:43Speaker 1: Jesus with the brightness of thy inner light, and cast
- 15:47Speaker 1: forth all darkness from the habitation of my heart. Restrain
- 15:53Speaker 1: my many wandering thoughts, and carry away the temptations which
- 15:58Speaker 1: strive to do me hurt. Fight thou mightily for me,
- 16:04Speaker 1: and drive forth the evil beasts. So call I alluring lusts,
- 16:11Speaker 1: that peace may be within thy walls, and plenteousness of
- 16:15Speaker 1: praise within thy palaces. Psalm one hundred and twenty two,
- 16:21Speaker 1: verse seven. Even in my pure conscience command thou the
- 16:27Speaker 1: winds and the storms, say unto the sea be still,
- 16:32Speaker 1: say unto the stormy wind, Hold thy peace. So shall
- 16:37Speaker 1: there be a great calm. O Send forth thy light
- 16:43Speaker 1: and thy truth Psalm forty three, verse three, that they
- 16:49Speaker 1: may shine upon the earth. For I am but earth
- 16:53Speaker 1: without form and void, until Thou give me light. Pour
- 16:58Speaker 1: forth thy grace from above water my heart with the
- 17:02Speaker 1: dew of Heaven. Give the waters of devotion to water
- 17:06Speaker 1: the face of the earth, and cause it to bring
- 17:09Speaker 1: forth good and perfect fruit. Lift up my mind, which
- 17:15Speaker 1: is oppressed with the weight of sins, and raise my
- 17:18Speaker 1: whole desire to heavenly things, that, having tasted the sweetness
- 17:24Speaker 1: of the happiness which is from above, it may take
- 17:28Speaker 1: no pleasure in thinking of things of earth. Draw me
- 17:33Speaker 1: and deliver me from every unstable comfort of creatures, for
- 17:39Speaker 1: no created thing is able to satisfy my desire and
- 17:43Speaker 1: to give me comfort. Join me to thyself by the
- 17:48Speaker 1: inseparable bond of love. For thou alone art sufficient to
- 17:53Speaker 1: him that loveth THEE, and without THEE, all things are
- 17:58Speaker 1: vain toys. Chapter twenty four of avoiding of curious inquiry
- 18:08Speaker 1: into the life of another, My son, be not curious
- 18:15Speaker 1: nor trouble thyself with vain cares. What is that to THEE?
- 18:22Speaker 1: Follow thou me John twenty one, verse twelve. For what
- 18:28Speaker 1: is it to THEE whether a man be this or that,
- 18:33Speaker 1: or say or do thus? Or Thus? Thou hast no
- 18:37Speaker 1: need to answer for others. But thou must give an
- 18:40Speaker 1: answer for thyself. Why therefore dost thou entangle thyself. Behold,
- 18:48Speaker 1: I know all men, and I behold all things which
- 18:52Speaker 1: are done under the sun, and I know how it
- 18:55Speaker 1: standeth with each one what he thinketh, what he willeth,
- 19:01Speaker 1: and to what end his thoughts reach. All things therefore
- 19:06Speaker 1: are to be committed to me. Watch thyself in godly peace,
- 19:12Speaker 1: and leave him who is unquiet to be unquiet as
- 19:16Speaker 1: he will. Whatsoever he shall do or say, shall come
- 19:21Speaker 1: unto him, For he cannot deceive me trouble not thyself
- 19:28Speaker 1: about the shadow of a great name, nor about the
- 19:31Speaker 1: friendship of many, nor about the love of men towards THEE.
- 19:37Speaker 1: For these things beget distraction and great sorrows of heart.
- 19:42Speaker 1: My words should speak freely unto THEE, and I would
- 19:46Speaker 1: reveal secrets if only thou didst diligently look for my appearing,
- 19:52Speaker 1: and didst open unto me the gates of thy heart.
- 19:57Speaker 1: Be sober, and watch on them to prayer one Peter four,
- 20:04Speaker 1: verse seven, And humble thyself in all things Chapter twenty five,
- 20:14Speaker 1: wherein firm peace of heart and true prophet consist. My son,
- 20:22Speaker 1: I have said peace, I leave with you. My peace
- 20:27Speaker 1: I give unto you, not as the world giveth, give
- 20:31Speaker 1: I unto you. John fourteen, verse twenty seven. All men
- 20:38Speaker 1: desire peace, but all do not care for the things
- 20:43Speaker 1: which belong unto true peace. My peace is with the
- 20:48Speaker 1: humble and lowly in heart. Thy peace shall be in
- 20:52Speaker 1: much patience. If thou heardest me and didst follow my voice,
- 20:58Speaker 1: thou shouldest enjoy joy much peace. What then shall I do, Lord?
- 21:07Speaker 1: In everything? Take heed to thyself, what thou doest and
- 21:12Speaker 1: what thou sayest, And direct all thy purpose to this,
- 21:17Speaker 1: that thou please me alone, and desire or seek nothing
- 21:22Speaker 1: apart from me. But moreover, judge nothing rashly concerning the
- 21:29Speaker 1: words or deeds of others, nor meddle with matters which
- 21:33Speaker 1: are not committed to thee. And it may be that
- 21:37Speaker 1: thou shalt be disturbed little or rarely, yet never to
- 21:42Speaker 1: feel any disquiet, nor to suffer any pain of heart
- 21:47Speaker 1: or body. This belongeth not to the present life, but
- 21:51Speaker 1: is the state of eternal rest. Therefore, count not thyself
- 21:58Speaker 1: to have found true peace. If thou hast felt no grief,
- 22:03Speaker 1: nor that then all is well. If thou hast no adversary,
- 22:08Speaker 1: nor that this is perfect, if all things fall out
- 22:11Speaker 1: according to thy desire, Nor then reckon thyself to be
- 22:16Speaker 1: anything great, or think that thou art especially beloved. If
- 22:22Speaker 1: thou art in a state of great fervor and sweetness
- 22:25Speaker 1: of spirit. For not by these things is the true
- 22:29Speaker 1: lover of virtue known, Nor in them doth the prophet
- 22:33Speaker 1: and perfection of man consist. In what then, Lord, in
- 22:41Speaker 1: offering thyself with all thy heart to the divine will,
- 22:46Speaker 1: in not seeking the things which are thine own, whether
- 22:50Speaker 1: great or small, whether temporal or eternal, so that thou
- 22:56Speaker 1: remain with the same steady countenance, in give of thanks
- 23:01Speaker 1: between prosperity and adversity, weighing all things in an equal balance.
- 23:08Speaker 1: If thou be so brave and long suffering in hope
- 23:12Speaker 1: that when inward comfort is taken from thee, thou even
- 23:16Speaker 1: prepare thy heart for the more endurance. And justify not thyself,
- 23:22Speaker 1: as though thou oughtest not to suffer these heavy things,
- 23:26Speaker 1: But dost justify me in all things that I appoint,
- 23:31Speaker 1: and dost bless my Holy name. Then dost thou walk
- 23:35Speaker 1: in the true and right way of peace, and shall
- 23:39Speaker 1: have a sure hope that thou shalt again behold My
- 23:43Speaker 1: face with joy. For if thou come to an utter
- 23:47Speaker 1: contempt of thyself, know that then thou shalt enjoy abundance
- 23:53Speaker 1: of peace as much as is possible. Where thou art
- 23:57Speaker 1: but a wayfaring man, Chapter twenty six of the Exaltation
- 24:06Speaker 1: of a free Spirit, which humble prayer more deserveth than
- 24:11Speaker 1: doth frequent reading. Lord. This is the work of a
- 24:17Speaker 1: perfect man, never to slacken his mind from attention to
- 24:22Speaker 1: heavenly things and among many cares, to pass along, as
- 24:27Speaker 1: it were, without care, not after the manner of one indifferent,
- 24:32Speaker 1: but rather with the privilege of a free mind, cleaving
- 24:36Speaker 1: to no creature with inordinate affection. I beseech thee, my
- 24:43Speaker 1: most merciful Lord, God, preserve me from the cares of
- 24:47Speaker 1: this life. Lest I become too much entangled from many
- 24:53Speaker 1: necessities of the body, lest I be taken captive by
- 24:56Speaker 1: pleasure from all obstacles of the the spirit, lest I
- 25:01Speaker 1: be broken and cast down with cares. I say, not
- 25:06Speaker 1: from those things which the vanity of the world goeth
- 25:09Speaker 1: about after with all eagerness, but from those miseries which,
- 25:14Speaker 1: by the universal curse of mortality, weigh down and hold
- 25:19Speaker 1: back the soul of thy servant in punishment, that it
- 25:24Speaker 1: cannot enter into liberty of spirit, so often as it would, Oh,
- 25:30Speaker 1: My God, sweetness, unspeakable, turn into bitterness. All my fleshly consolation,
- 25:38Speaker 1: which draweth me away from the love of eternal things,
- 25:42Speaker 1: and wickedly allureth towards itself by setting before me some
- 25:48Speaker 1: present delight. Let not o, my God, Let not flesh
- 25:54Speaker 1: and blood prevail over me. Let not the world and
- 25:58Speaker 1: its short glory deceived me. Let not the devil and
- 26:02Speaker 1: his craftiness supplant me. Give me courage to resist, patience,
- 26:09Speaker 1: to endure, constancy to persevere. Grant, in place of all
- 26:16Speaker 1: consolations of the world, the most sweet unction of thy Spirit,
- 26:23Speaker 1: and in place of carnal love, Pour into me the
- 26:27Speaker 1: love of thy name. Behold food and drink, and clothing,
- 26:34Speaker 1: and all the other things appertaining to the support of
- 26:38Speaker 1: the body are burdensome to the devout spirit. Grant that
- 26:43Speaker 1: I may use such things with moderation, and that I
- 26:48Speaker 1: be not entangled with inordinate affection for them. To cast
- 26:53Speaker 1: away all these things is not lawful, because nature must
- 26:58Speaker 1: be sustained. But to require superfluities and things which merely
- 27:03Speaker 1: minister delight the Holy Law forbiddeth, for otherwise the flesh
- 27:10Speaker 1: would wax insolent against the Spirit. In all these things,
- 27:16Speaker 1: I beseech thee. Let thy hand guide and teach me
- 27:21Speaker 1: that I in no way exceed Chapter twenty seven. That
- 27:29Speaker 1: personal love greatly hindereth from the highest good, my son,
- 27:36Speaker 1: Thou must give all for all, and be nothing of
- 27:41Speaker 1: thine own. Know thou that the love of thyself is
- 27:46Speaker 1: more hurtful to THEE than anything in the world. According
- 27:52Speaker 1: to the love and inclination which thou hast, everything more
- 27:56Speaker 1: or less cleaveth to THEE. If thy love be pure,
- 28:01Speaker 1: sincere well regulated, thou shalt not be in captivity to anything.
- 28:09Speaker 1: Do not covet what thou mayest not have. Do not
- 28:13Speaker 1: have what is able to hinder THEE and to rob
- 28:17Speaker 1: THEE of inward liberty. It is wonderful that thou committest
- 28:22Speaker 1: not thyself to me from the very bottom of thy heart,
- 28:26Speaker 1: with all things which thou canst desire or have. Why
- 28:32Speaker 1: art thou consumed with vain sorrow? Why art thou wearied
- 28:37Speaker 1: with superfluous cares? Stand thou by my good pleasure, and
- 28:44Speaker 1: thou shalt suffer no loss. If thou seekest after this
- 28:49Speaker 1: or that, and wilt be here or there according to
- 28:53Speaker 1: thine own advantage or the fulfilling of thine own pleasure,
- 28:58Speaker 1: Thou shalt never be in quiet nor free from care,
- 29:03Speaker 1: because in everything somewhat will be found lacking, and everywhere
- 29:09Speaker 1: there will be somebody who opposeth THEE. Therefore, it is
- 29:14Speaker 1: not gaining or multiplying of this thing or that which
- 29:18Speaker 1: advantageth THEE, but rather the despising it and cutting it
- 29:24Speaker 1: by the root out of thy heart, which thou must
- 29:27Speaker 1: not only understand of money and riches, but of the
- 29:31Speaker 1: desire after honor and vain praise, things which all pass
- 29:37Speaker 1: away with the world. The place availeth little if the
- 29:42Speaker 1: spirit of devotion is wanting, Nor shall that peace stand long,
- 29:47Speaker 1: which is sought from abroad. If the state of thy
- 29:51Speaker 1: heart is without the true foundation, that is, if it
- 29:55Speaker 1: abideth not in me, Thou mayest change. But thou canst
- 30:02Speaker 1: not better thyself. For when occasion ariseth and is accepted,
- 30:08Speaker 1: thou shalt find what thou didst fly from yea more
- 30:16Speaker 1: a prayer for cleansing of the heart and for heavenly wisdom.
- 30:22Speaker 1: Strengthen me o, God, by the grace of thy Holy Spirit,
- 30:27Speaker 1: give me virtue to be strengthened with might in the
- 30:30Speaker 1: inner man, and to free my heart from all fruitless
- 30:35Speaker 1: care and trouble, and that I be not drawn away
- 30:39Speaker 1: by various desires after any things whatsoever, whether of little
- 30:45Speaker 1: value or great, but that I may look upon all
- 30:49Speaker 1: as passing away, and myself as passing away with them,
- 30:55Speaker 1: because there is no profit unto the sun, and all
- 30:59Speaker 1: is vanity and vexation of spirit Ecclesiastes two, verse eleven. O.
- 31:08Speaker 1: How wise is he that considereth, Thus give me, o, Lord,
- 31:14Speaker 1: heavenly wisdom, that I may learn to seek THEE above
- 31:18Speaker 1: all things, and to find THEE, to relish THEE above
- 31:23Speaker 1: all things, and to love THEE, and to understand all
- 31:29Speaker 1: other things, even as they are, according to the order
- 31:34Speaker 1: of Thy wisdom. Grant me prudently to avoid the flatterer,
- 31:40Speaker 1: and patiently to bear with him that opposeth me. For
- 31:45Speaker 1: this is great wisdom, not to be carried by every
- 31:49Speaker 1: wind of words, nor to give ear to the wicked,
- 31:52Speaker 1: flattering siren. For thus do we go safely on in
- 31:57Speaker 1: the way we have begun Chapter twenty eight. Against the
- 32:04Speaker 1: tongues of detractors, My son, take it not sadly to
- 32:11Speaker 1: heart if any think ill of THEE, and say of
- 32:15Speaker 1: THEE what thou art unwilling to hear thou oughtest to
- 32:20Speaker 1: think worse of thyself, and to believe no man weaker
- 32:24Speaker 1: than thyself. If thou walkest inwardly, thou wilt not weigh
- 32:31Speaker 1: flying words above their value. It is no small prudence
- 32:36Speaker 1: to keep silence in an evil time, and to turn
- 32:40Speaker 1: inwardly unto me, and not to be troubled by human judgment.
- 32:47Speaker 1: Let not thy peace depend upon the word of men,
- 32:51Speaker 1: for whether they judge well or ill of thee. Thou
- 32:54Speaker 1: art not therefore any other man than thyself. Where there
- 33:00Speaker 1: is true peace or true glory, is it not in me?
- 33:06Speaker 1: And he who seeketh not to please men, nor feareth
- 33:10Speaker 1: to displease, shall enjoy abundant peace. From inordinate love and
- 33:17Speaker 1: vain fear ariseth all disquietude of heart and all distraction
- 33:23Speaker 1: of the senses. Chapter twenty nine. How when tribulation cometh,
- 33:33Speaker 1: we must call upon and bless God. Blessed be thy name,
- 33:39Speaker 1: O Lord, for evermore, who hast willed this temptation and
- 33:44Speaker 1: trouble to come upon me? I cannot escape it, but
- 33:49Speaker 1: have need to flee unto thee, that thou mayest succor
- 33:53Speaker 1: me and turn it unto me. For good Lord, now
- 33:59Speaker 1: am I in tribute, and it is not well within
- 34:02Speaker 1: my heart. But I am sore vexed by the suffering
- 34:06Speaker 1: which lieth upon me. And now, Oh, dear Father, what
- 34:11Speaker 1: shall I say? I am taken among the snares? Save
- 34:16Speaker 1: me from this hour? But for this cause came I
- 34:20Speaker 1: unto this hour John twelve, verse twenty seven, that thou
- 34:26Speaker 1: mightest be glorified when I am deeply humbled and am
- 34:30Speaker 1: delivered through THEE. Let it be thy pleasure to deliver
- 34:35Speaker 1: me Psalm forty, verse sixteen. For what can I do,
- 34:42Speaker 1: who am poor and without THEE? Whither shall I go?
- 34:47Speaker 1: Give patience this time? Also help me, O Lord, my God?
- 34:53Speaker 1: And I will not fear how much soever I be
- 34:56Speaker 1: weighed down? Now amid these things? What shall I say? Lord,
- 35:05Speaker 1: Thy will be done? I have well deserved to be
- 35:10Speaker 1: troubled and weighed down. Therefore I ought to bear. Would
- 35:15Speaker 1: that it be with patience until the tempest be overpassed
- 35:19Speaker 1: and comfort return. Yet is Thine omnipotent, arm able also
- 35:25Speaker 1: to take this temptation away from me, and to lessen
- 35:29Speaker 1: its power, that I fall not utterly under it, Even
- 35:33Speaker 1: as many a time past thou hast helped me, O God,
- 35:37Speaker 1: my merciful God. And as much as this deliverance is
- 35:42Speaker 1: difficult to me, so much is it easy to THEE
- 35:47Speaker 1: O right hand of the most Highest Chapter thirty of
- 35:55Speaker 1: seeking divine help and the confidence of obtaining grace. My son,
- 36:04Speaker 1: I the Lord am a stronghold in the day of
- 36:07Speaker 1: trouble Naeum one verse seven, come unto me when it
- 36:15Speaker 1: is not well with THEE. This it is which chiefly
- 36:20Speaker 1: hindereth heavenly consolation, that thou too slowly betakest thyself unto prayer.
- 36:28Speaker 1: For before thou earnestly seekest unto me, thou dost first
- 36:32Speaker 1: seek after many means of comfort, and refreshest thyself in
- 36:37Speaker 1: outward things. So it cometh to pass that all things
- 36:42Speaker 1: profit THEE, but little until thou learn that it is
- 36:45Speaker 1: I who deliver those who trust in me. Neither beside
- 36:51Speaker 1: me is there any strong help, nor profitable counsel, nor
- 36:56Speaker 1: enduring remedy. But now recover courage. After the tempest, grow
- 37:02Speaker 1: thou strong in the light of my mercies. For I
- 37:06Speaker 1: am nigh saith the Lord, that I may restore all
- 37:10Speaker 1: things not only as they were at the first, but
- 37:14Speaker 1: also abundantly, and one upon another For is anything too
- 37:21Speaker 1: hard for me, Or shall I bel like unto one
- 37:24Speaker 1: who saith and doeth not? Where is thy faith? Stand
- 37:30Speaker 1: fast and with perseverance, be long suffering and strong consolation
- 37:39Speaker 1: will come unto THEE in its due season. Wait for me,
- 37:44Speaker 1: yea wait, I will come and heal THEE. It is
- 37:49Speaker 1: temptation which vexeth THEE, and a vain fear which terrifieth THEE.
- 37:56Speaker 1: What doth care about future events? Bring THEE? Save sorrow
- 38:02Speaker 1: upon sorrow sufficient for the day is the evil thereof
- 38:09Speaker 1: Matthew six, verse thirty four. It is vain and useless
- 38:15Speaker 1: to be disturbed or lifted up about future things, which
- 38:19Speaker 1: perhaps will never come. But it is the nature of
- 38:24Speaker 1: man to be deceived by fancies of this sort. And
- 38:28Speaker 1: it is a sign of a mind which is still
- 38:31Speaker 1: weak to be so easily drawn away at the suggestion
- 38:35Speaker 1: of the enemy. For he careth not whether he deceive
- 38:39Speaker 1: and beguile by true means or false, whether he throw
- 38:44Speaker 1: THEE down by the love of the present or fear
- 38:47Speaker 1: of the future. Therefore, let not thy heart be troubled,
- 38:52Speaker 1: neither let it be afraid. Believe in me, and put
- 38:57Speaker 1: thy trust in my mercy John fourteen, verse twenty seven.
- 39:03Speaker 1: Psalm thirteen, verse five. When thou thinkest thyself far removed
- 39:10Speaker 1: from me, I am often the nearer. When thou reckonest
- 39:15Speaker 1: that almost all is lost, then often is greater opportunity
- 39:19Speaker 1: of gain at hand. All is not lost when something
- 39:24Speaker 1: goeth contrary to thy wishes. Thou oughtest not to judge
- 39:29Speaker 1: according to present feeling, nor so to take or give
- 39:34Speaker 1: way to any grief which befallth THEE, as if all
- 39:37Speaker 1: hope of escape were taken away. Think not thyself totally abandoned,
- 39:45Speaker 1: although for the time I have sent to THEE some tribulation,
- 39:49Speaker 1: or have even withdrawn some cherished consolation, For this is
- 39:55Speaker 1: the way to the Kingdom of heaven. And without doubt
- 39:59Speaker 1: it is better for THEE and for all my other servants,
- 40:03Speaker 1: that ye should be proved by adversities, than that ye
- 40:07Speaker 1: should have all things as ye would. I know thy
- 40:11Speaker 1: hidden thoughts, and that it is very needful for thy
- 40:15Speaker 1: soul's health that sometimes thou be left without relish, lest
- 40:21Speaker 1: perchance thou be lifted up by prosperity and desirest to
- 40:25Speaker 1: please thyself in that which thou art, not what I
- 40:31Speaker 1: have given. I am able to take away and to
- 40:35Speaker 1: restore again at my good pleasure. When I shall have
- 40:40Speaker 1: given it is mine. When I shall have taken away,
- 40:45Speaker 1: I have not taken what is thine. For every good
- 40:49Speaker 1: gift and every perfect gift is from me James one,
- 40:55Speaker 1: verse seventeen. If I shall have said upon THEE grief
- 41:02Speaker 1: or any vexation, be not angry, nor let thy heart
- 41:06Speaker 1: be sad. I am able quickly to lift THEE up
- 41:10Speaker 1: and to change every burden into joy. For I am
- 41:15Speaker 1: just and greatly to be praised. When I do thus
- 41:18Speaker 1: unto THEE. If thou rightly consider and look upon it
- 41:24Speaker 1: with truth, thou oughtest never to be so sadly cast
- 41:28Speaker 1: down because of adversity, but rather shouldst rejoice and give thanks.
- 41:34Speaker 1: Yea verily to count it the highest joy, that I
- 41:38Speaker 1: afflict THEE with sorrows and spare THEE. Not as my
- 41:43Speaker 1: father hath loved me, so love I you John fifteen,
- 41:49Speaker 1: verse nine. Thus have I spoken unto my beloved disciples,
- 41:56Speaker 1: whom I sent forth, not unto worldly joys, but to
- 42:00Speaker 1: great strivings, not unto honors, but unto contempt, Not unto ease,
- 42:07Speaker 1: but to labors, not unto rest but to bring forth
- 42:12Speaker 1: much fruit with patience. My son, remember these words. End
- 42:22Speaker 1: of Chapter thirty
