1:23
Speaker 3: lot of breaking news overnight in this morning. Go ahead
1:25
Speaker 3: and get your stuff in there. As the show goes on,
1:27
Speaker 3: we will be checking in with you, because what's the
1:30
Speaker 3: point of us talking if you're not listening. We'd love
1:32
Speaker 3: to hear from you. Let us know what you have
1:34
Speaker 3: to say out there. We're going to go right to
1:37
Speaker 3: a thing, Dale Cooper sitting in with me in the
1:39
Speaker 3: pal Mars Studios. Now you we're on the opposite ends
1:42
Speaker 3: of the parenting spectrum here, Coop, you're at the bottom
1:46
Speaker 3: end of the thing. You have a young child, My
1:49
Speaker 3: kids are mostly grown. Have you had the cell phone?
1:52
Speaker 3: What age is appropriate for our cell phone conversation?
1:54
Speaker 4: Yet? I guess it depends on My kid's only six
1:57
Speaker 4: and uh being homeschooled. She does, have you got them exactly?
2:03
Speaker 4: She does have a tablet or a device that we
2:07
Speaker 4: use for like our schooling and stuff, which also is
2:09
Speaker 4: an entertainment device and stuff like that, so she does
2:11
Speaker 4: have one, but it's not a quote unquote phone. She
2:14
Speaker 4: doesn't have like uh, texting abilities or unless it's like
2:18
Speaker 4: online controlled through like a messenger or something where she
2:20
Speaker 4: could get a parent, but it's not. It's like a
2:22
Speaker 4: closed garden that she uses that that we allow her
2:25
Speaker 4: permission to use a couple of her games, and then
2:27
Speaker 4: all of her learning software that she can use anytime
2:30
Speaker 4: that she wants to. So with us, it was a
2:32
Speaker 4: little bit different. I can and I can definitely see
2:35
Speaker 4: where it's going to be a problem in the future,
2:36
Speaker 4: but I mean that's that's the way we have to
2:38
Speaker 4: do our teaching right now with homeschooling. So it's a
2:41
Speaker 4: fine line to walk as far as that goes.
2:43
Speaker 3: Well, brace yourself, Bridget, because that digital dunkirk is coming
2:46
Speaker 3: for you and your household. Let's talk about this though,
2:49
Speaker 3: because three we're getting in it. We've gotten through the niceties,
2:52
Speaker 3: we've gotten to the laptops handed out, we've got the
2:54
Speaker 3: first couple of days of school out of the way.
2:56
Speaker 3: Three counties in West Virginia have already done restrictions on
2:59
Speaker 3: cell phones. But this is a nationwide debate. I'm sure
3:02
Speaker 3: you've seen it on social media. It also goes to
3:04
Speaker 3: the larger debates that everybody's been having in West Virginia
3:07
Speaker 3: and nationally on things like parental rights, school choice. This
3:11
Speaker 3: stuff all goes together. So we reached out to a
3:13
Speaker 3: friend of our, Gary and Frankel, who's been writing about
3:16
Speaker 3: this nationally. I send him what West Virginia's doing We're
3:19
Speaker 3: curious to. He's joining us on the phone. He's a
3:21
Speaker 3: young voices contributor, really good writer, good guy Frank Howard.
3:25
Speaker 3: See I called you, Frank and it's Gary. It's all
3:27
Speaker 3: this Chicano texts and stuff with you. I just can't
3:29
Speaker 3: do your name, my friend, How are you this morning?
3:33
Speaker 3: Not bad?
3:33
Speaker 5: How about yourself?
3:35
Speaker 3: If I see? I was telling him, here's what happens
3:37
Speaker 3: a little inside baseball to radio. Your name is Gary
3:40
Speaker 3: and Frankel. Your Twitter handle is Gary and Franklin. When
3:43
Speaker 3: I look at it, my little Somersville mind tries to
3:46
Speaker 3: say them both at the same time, and really bad
3:47
Speaker 3: stuff happened. So I apologize, my friend, but you give
3:50
Speaker 3: good information house things.
3:51
Speaker 5: With you not too bad?
3:53
Speaker 6: Not too bad.
3:55
Speaker 3: I sent you this. What is what's going on in
3:57
Speaker 3: West Virginia with the cell phone bands? Matching what's going
4:00
Speaker 3: on nationally, because this is one of those things, and
4:03
Speaker 3: I know because I've talked to you. You just kind
4:05
Speaker 3: of wrote a piece about this a couple of months ago,
4:07
Speaker 3: and this thing has just blown up since, especially with
4:09
Speaker 3: the start of the new school year.
4:12
Speaker 5: Absolutely, and it's one of those situations where nobody wanted
4:17
Speaker 5: to be the first person to implement a particular policy
4:22
Speaker 5: because they were worried about backlash or how people would react,
4:25
Speaker 5: what it would do. But it's been something that's been
4:29
Speaker 5: on everybody in education's minds for a couple of years now,
4:33
Speaker 5: and I've forget who was first, But as soon as
4:36
Speaker 5: a couple of states, couple districts, a couple regions in
4:38
Speaker 5: the country started doing it, it started spreading nationwide like
4:43
Speaker 5: a firestorm, and for a very good reason.
4:46
Speaker 3: Yeah, garyan Frankel joining us. Let's get to the nomenclature
4:50
Speaker 3: though here, because we've debated this, I lean a little
4:52
Speaker 3: bit more towards schools. You need to train kids for
4:55
Speaker 3: the world as it is, not as the world as
4:57
Speaker 3: you think it should be. So I'm a little more
4:59
Speaker 3: lax with things like, yes, of course you want to
5:01
Speaker 3: have some discipline about it, but I kind of veer
5:04
Speaker 3: away from bands and things like this because learning how
5:07
Speaker 3: to deal with this stuff is is life skilled these
5:09
Speaker 3: kids are going to need going forward. And my kids
5:10
Speaker 3: are older, they've all grown up in the digital age
5:13
Speaker 3: and the COVID distance learning age. Do we need to
5:16
Speaker 3: make a distinction with the nomenclature? Hear though, because and
5:19
Speaker 3: I've noticed in some of these policies, I think there's
5:22
Speaker 3: a difference between having the device restricted for in classroom
5:26
Speaker 3: teaching and banning it from the school building altogether. I
5:29
Speaker 3: think we do need to make a distinction there because
5:31
Speaker 3: that's a lot of the pushback because the parents are like, well,
5:33
Speaker 3: if there's an emergency, if there's something my kid's doing
5:37
Speaker 3: a split hybrid where they go to the community college
5:38
Speaker 3: on the bus half today, they're traveling halfway across town,
5:41
Speaker 3: They've got to have their cell phone. Is that a
5:43
Speaker 3: distinction we need to start with before we get into
5:45
Speaker 3: the nuts and bolts of this debate.
5:48
Speaker 5: I can definitely see where you're coming from on that one,
5:50
Speaker 5: and I think there is, at least at the district level,
5:55
Speaker 5: very good reason to tell parents exactly what the policy
5:59
Speaker 5: is and not just saying world banning phones because that
6:03
Speaker 5: is a very important way that schools can be transparent
6:08
Speaker 5: and build trust with their local communities. Because you're right,
6:12
Speaker 5: there are some districts where they say, you just can't
6:14
Speaker 5: have your phone out in class. You have to leave
6:16
Speaker 5: them in your locker, or you have to put them
6:18
Speaker 5: in a cubby hole in front of the classroom and
6:21
Speaker 5: you don't have.
6:22
Speaker 7: Access to it.
6:23
Speaker 5: Some districts are even getting these fancy magnetic pouches that
6:27
Speaker 5: lock the phone for essentially the entire school day, and
6:31
Speaker 5: students can carry that around with them, but they can't
6:33
Speaker 5: access the magnetic pouch because it's controlled from somewhere else.
6:37
Speaker 5: And then you have some other places that are saying no,
6:40
Speaker 5: you can't bring phones into the schools at all, and
6:42
Speaker 5: that just depends on the district, it depends on the
6:45
Speaker 5: state in some cases. But parents do have a right
6:49
Speaker 5: to know exactly what the policy is and how they
6:53
Speaker 5: can get in contact with their kids if need be.
6:56
Speaker 3: One of the things that's interesting, too, is because school
6:59
Speaker 3: debates go a lot like political debates and cultural debates.
7:02
Speaker 3: They break down real quick over things like class, race, demographics,
7:05
Speaker 3: social strata, that sort of thing, and then people kind
7:08
Speaker 3: of diverge. This debate doesn't seem to do that. This
7:11
Speaker 3: seems to be pretty black and white on how people
7:13
Speaker 3: feel about this, and it's got people really fired up.
7:16
Speaker 3: Whether it's in a huge school district like Houston, where
7:19
Speaker 3: you wrote your original piece, which is one of the
7:21
Speaker 3: I think top seven or eight districts in the entire
7:23
Speaker 3: country for amount of students, or if it's a smaller
7:26
Speaker 3: district in West Virginia. Why do you think this cuts
7:29
Speaker 3: through so many lines and get.
7:31
Speaker 5: Them is that our elected officials tend to be on
7:34
Speaker 5: the older side, and older individuals don't always like technology
7:38
Speaker 5: as much. But I think the real heart of the
7:41
Speaker 5: problem is that there is some really good research now
7:44
Speaker 5: that cuts that educational priorities that both sides of the
7:50
Speaker 5: education of the political and educational divide have that really
7:55
Speaker 5: speak to how destructive of phones and other technological devices
8:00
Speaker 5: have been in schools. I came across one study that
8:05
Speaker 5: found that if a student uses their phone in class
8:08
Speaker 5: for five hours a day, which is not unheard of.
8:12
Speaker 5: It's not the majority, but there's a good number of
8:14
Speaker 5: students that are on their phone that often, it does
8:18
Speaker 5: more damage to their educational prospects than the learning loss
8:22
Speaker 5: from the COVID nineteen pandemic. And even as the average
8:27
Speaker 5: student does spending about forty five minutes an hour on
8:30
Speaker 5: their phone a day over a one hundred and eighty
8:33
Speaker 5: day school year, that's a lot of lost time that
8:36
Speaker 5: they should be used to be learning. And when we
8:38
Speaker 5: look at persistent declines and academic achievement and test scores
8:43
Speaker 5: and all these problems that our school systems are having,
8:47
Speaker 5: it seems like getting the phones out is i don't
8:51
Speaker 5: want to say, low cost, but low effort way of
8:56
Speaker 5: starting to try and turn some of those trends around.
9:01
Speaker 3: And here's the thing too, We hear all the time,
9:03
Speaker 3: will studies say this, study say that you're an academic?
9:06
Speaker 3: You got all those fancy letters after your name. Studies
9:10
Speaker 3: can do a lot of things, but studies also take
9:12
Speaker 3: a lot of time. How much has the COVID era
9:15
Speaker 3: kind of changed people's perceptives on this, because, let's be honest,
9:18
Speaker 3: one of the big problems with education during the COVID
9:20
Speaker 3: was the communication was awful on all sides everybody involved.
9:24
Speaker 3: Now we've got a year, two, three, four school years
9:26
Speaker 3: coming out of COVID. The data is probably going to
9:29
Speaker 3: keep growing. But when we say studies, How solid is
9:32
Speaker 3: this data? Is it going to continue to change? Plus
9:34
Speaker 3: the technology is changing, so we got to factor that in.
9:37
Speaker 3: You do this academic, hardcore research, because you study K
9:39
Speaker 3: through twelve. Just break that down because people say, studies
9:43
Speaker 3: say this, Studies say that, how does the studies actually
9:45
Speaker 3: keep up with something that's as dynamic as this is.
9:49
Speaker 5: And that's a very good and important point and one
9:53
Speaker 5: thing that you look for when you're researching in a
9:57
Speaker 5: rapidly changing, rapidly developing sort of problem. And absolutely the
10:03
Speaker 5: COVID nineteen pandemic factors into this. What you look for
10:06
Speaker 5: is consistency if one study, If one study is absolutely
10:11
Speaker 5: explosive in one way and another study is explosive in
10:15
Speaker 5: another way, that doesn't really tell you much. But what
10:18
Speaker 5: we're seeing is regardless of when the study took place
10:22
Speaker 5: pre or post COVID, regardless of the type of technology
10:26
Speaker 5: you're looking at, regardless of the country, the state, locality
10:30
Speaker 5: you're looking at, every single bit of research we're seeing
10:35
Speaker 5: finds persistent problems with kids and technology. It startin's attention spans,
10:43
Speaker 5: it's a distraction. It can sometimes facilitate misbehavior in really
10:50
Speaker 5: destructive ways that upset other students learning opportunities, even if
10:55
Speaker 5: they're not the ones who have their phones out, because
10:58
Speaker 5: the teacher has to spend so much, so much time
11:00
Speaker 5: policing kids that they can even really teach. And every
11:07
Speaker 5: single bit of data we have coming in just build
11:11
Speaker 5: and build and build this case for getting the phones out.
11:16
Speaker 5: And this is something that's very consistent and if anything,
11:20
Speaker 5: what indicators we have show the problem is getting worse
11:23
Speaker 5: rather than better or different.
11:26
Speaker 3: Yeah, Gary and Frankel joining us. You just touched on
11:28
Speaker 3: it there though, But is there a danger here because
11:31
Speaker 3: we tend to have like a character of the year
11:34
Speaker 3: for school years, especially starts school years for the news cycle.
11:37
Speaker 3: Is there a danger though, that we start scapegoating the
11:40
Speaker 3: phones on some of the existing problems in the school system, because,
11:43
Speaker 3: like you just said, school discipline has been an increasingly
11:46
Speaker 3: bad problem for several years now. It's been getting really worse.
11:50
Speaker 3: Teachers being unhappy in the classroom because they feel like
11:52
Speaker 3: they lose control, and they also feel sandwich between the
11:55
Speaker 3: parents and the students and the administrative levels of schools.
11:57
Speaker 3: Increasingly that's causing problems with teach Those are just a
12:01
Speaker 3: couple of the examples, but there's a lot of ongoing issues.
12:04
Speaker 3: This is an issue that exacerbates those existing problems. Is
12:08
Speaker 3: there a danger that we end up scapegoating and not
12:10
Speaker 3: dealing with the existing problems that this is just bringing
12:12
Speaker 3: up to the surfaces a little bit more.
12:15
Speaker 5: There's absolutely a risk of scapegoating. And you know, when
12:18
Speaker 5: I wrote my original article for the Houston Chronicle, I
12:21
Speaker 5: was very careful to make it clear that this is
12:28
Speaker 5: not going to solve any of our educational problems forever
12:32
Speaker 5: and ever. We can all be happy in sing kumbaya.
12:36
Speaker 5: This isn't going to solve all our problems. It's the
12:39
Speaker 5: first step at getting at larger systemic issues within our
12:44
Speaker 5: educational system. Because if you're not going to stop the
12:49
Speaker 5: bleeding in some way, if you're not going to stop
12:52
Speaker 5: some of these problems from getting worse than they already
12:54
Speaker 5: are for a number of other reasons, many of which
12:57
Speaker 5: you pointed out, then we have very little opportunity of
13:03
Speaker 5: tapping really any of the problems within education. And I
13:06
Speaker 5: mean we talked about this before. You know, I'm a
13:08
Speaker 5: big school choice guy. School but even schools of choice
13:12
Speaker 5: have these types of problems too, And if we can't
13:19
Speaker 5: mitigate them right away. We can at least stop them
13:23
Speaker 5: from getting worse in the meantime, and I think that's
13:26
Speaker 5: what these restrictions on phones accomplished.
13:29
Speaker 3: Yeah, Gary and Frankel joining us. You just kind of
13:31
Speaker 3: said it. So let's just lay it out there, though,
13:33
Speaker 3: because here's how these things go. The individual school boards
13:36
Speaker 3: or school districts however you have in your area, they
13:39
Speaker 3: start doing something, Then it becomes a state issue. Then
13:42
Speaker 3: it becomes a national issue. So at some point state
13:44
Speaker 3: legislators are going to want state wide policy. At some
13:46
Speaker 3: point people are going to want a federal policy. That's
13:48
Speaker 3: going to be the next fight, and then it'll all
13:50
Speaker 3: go to court and around and round. We'll go give
13:53
Speaker 3: folks something to look for in the news cycle going forward,
13:56
Speaker 3: because this is going to escalate. It's going to go
13:57
Speaker 3: to the state level, and then congress people wi get
13:59
Speaker 3: involved and so on. What should they be looking for
14:02
Speaker 3: in the headlines going forward on this issue, beyond just
14:04
Speaker 3: the Facebook posts of whether we're going to ban schools
14:07
Speaker 3: and cell phones or not.
14:09
Speaker 5: There have already been a couple of states that have
14:12
Speaker 5: tried to or have implemented restrictions on cell phones statewide.
14:19
Speaker 5: I'm based in Texas. I imagine that this is going
14:23
Speaker 5: to be a topic of discussion in Texas's next legislative session,
14:28
Speaker 5: and as the second most populous state in the Union,
14:30
Speaker 5: will be probably by far the biggest states to do
14:33
Speaker 5: something like that. There are already similar pieces of legislation
14:38
Speaker 5: being discussed in the Midwest. I imagine it will start
14:44
Speaker 5: spreading to the South before long. I actually don't expect
14:48
Speaker 5: the federal government to get too involved in this one
14:51
Speaker 5: because it would probably require them to offer money attached
14:57
Speaker 5: to it, and this is not necessarily money that a
15:01
Speaker 5: lot of states would want to take for a number
15:03
Speaker 5: of reasons. But at the state level, if you're interested
15:07
Speaker 5: in state level policy, and you were the type of
15:11
Speaker 5: person to look at legislative bulletins and keep tabs, it's
15:15
Speaker 5: going to spread in the next two three years around
15:20
Speaker 5: the country, regardless of political party at the state level.
15:23
Speaker 3: Sure feels that way. Garyan Frankel, Young Voices contributor, a
15:26
Speaker 3: good friend of ours. Glad to have you on. Let
15:28
Speaker 3: folks know where they can follow you. We'll put up
15:30
Speaker 3: a link to that Houston Chronicle piece, very important piece
15:32
Speaker 3: on banning cell phones in school. He took the meme
15:36
Speaker 3: and brought it to life and said, no, the children
15:38
Speaker 3: are wrong on this one. Good job on that. Let's
15:40
Speaker 3: folks know how anything follow you and keep up with
15:42
Speaker 3: you on this issue.
15:43
Speaker 5: Thanks for having me. I'm most active on Twitter or
15:47
Speaker 5: x or whatever you call it now at f R
15:50
Speaker 5: A n K E.
15:52
Speaker 3: L G A R I O N and he's spelling
15:55
Speaker 3: it out because I keep mispronouncing it. Gary and Frankel,
15:58
Speaker 3: Good job, buddy, appreciate your time. Thank you, sir.
16:00
Speaker 5: Thanks for having me.
16:02
Speaker 3: I appreciate that a lot to react to. People get Look,
16:05
Speaker 3: you start messing with people's kids and messing with their
16:07
Speaker 3: ability to communicate with their kids. People get fired up.
16:10
Speaker 3: But people are also concerned about education. Jump on to
16:13
Speaker 3: Tony the Taylor text line and let us know what
16:16
Speaker 3: you think about this, and also visit him in person.
16:19
Speaker 3: Tony the Taylor, He's over on Virginia Street and Charleston
16:21
Speaker 3: Bestmaster Taylor dot com. Coop. What do you think you
16:25
Speaker 3: good with schools with cell phones? You go with bane?
16:27
Speaker 3: I remember going into briefings when I was in the
16:29
Speaker 3: military fifteen twenty years ago. We'd have to put them
16:30
Speaker 3: in the little plastic thing at the door before you
16:32
Speaker 3: went in the room. This is not a new thing,
16:33
Speaker 3: but now it's involving people's kids.
16:35
Speaker 4: Yeah, it's a little bit. I don't know where technology
16:38
Speaker 4: takes us. By the way, that text line number three
16:39
Speaker 4: zerre four non three five five zero zero eight three
16:41
Speaker 4: zerre be four non three five five zero zero eight
16:43
Speaker 4: is a text line number if you want to get
16:44
Speaker 4: in on that. He give us call this morning as
16:45
Speaker 4: well if you want thro three zero four three four
16:47
Speaker 4: five fifteen fifty eight three four five fifteen to fifty eight.
16:50
Speaker 4: It's hard for me because my kid, I'm fifty, but
16:53
Speaker 4: my kid's only six, so there's a huge gap between
16:56
Speaker 4: when I was in school and what she's going to
16:58
Speaker 4: be coming to. And we've decided to home school her
17:00
Speaker 4: through second grade. We're going to start putting her in
17:02
Speaker 4: school probably next year. So we have a lot of
17:04
Speaker 4: these decisions that we're going to make, and frankly, I'm
17:07
Speaker 4: still gathering information. Man, I don't have really a hot
17:09
Speaker 4: take on it. It's hard for me because I can
17:11
Speaker 4: see kind of both ends of the perspective. We definitely like,
17:15
Speaker 4: is there technology that couldn't resolve some of this? Like
17:17
Speaker 4: could you have phones that you like, you know, how
17:20
Speaker 4: you go to concerts and you can't use your phones
17:21
Speaker 4: at concerts because they suppressed the Wi fi. Said, well,
17:26
Speaker 4: could you do something like that to where you only
17:27
Speaker 4: have like an internal network that works with maybe a
17:29
Speaker 4: couple of pass through numbers for approved numbers from parents
17:32
Speaker 4: or something. I don't know. Is there some way that
17:35
Speaker 4: we can use technology to get around this so you
17:38
Speaker 4: can kind of have a good compromise in there. I'm
17:39
Speaker 4: not sure.
17:40
Speaker 3: I'm thinking like the hospitals have like dedicated Wi Fi
17:43
Speaker 3: that has blockers on this stuff like that. I think
17:46
Speaker 3: that's kind of where this is going to go. We're
17:47
Speaker 3: going to go and we'll see. We'll continue to talk
17:50
Speaker 3: about this. We're gonna take aquay break and we come back.
17:51
Speaker 3: We're going to talk about these stranded astronauts in space.
17:53
Speaker 3: I can't believe this isn't a bigger story than what
17:55
Speaker 3: it is that we've got astronauts that can't come back.
17:57
Speaker 3: Doctor Michael Siegel, you've heard him on other programming. We're

20:52
Speaker 3: be with you. I'm just shocked that this isn't a
20:55
Speaker 3: bigger story. We have astronauts that are stuck in space
20:58
Speaker 3: and we can't get them back until spring. Just stop
21:01
Speaker 3: and think about that a second. How does that even happen? Coop?
21:04
Speaker 3: Have you followed this story at all?
21:06
Speaker 4: Only a little bit? I mean I followed it because
21:08
Speaker 4: I have the space news that's in my stream and
21:12
Speaker 4: I follow space and sciences, So I've been following this
21:14
Speaker 4: a little bit. But as far as the nuanced details,
21:17
Speaker 4: I don't have a lot of the nuanced details behind it.
21:19
Speaker 3: Well, I know who to talk to about it, because
21:20
Speaker 3: I only have one guy in my entire rolodex and
21:22
Speaker 3: contact list that actually flies a spacecraft. But he's a
21:25
Speaker 3: familiar voice on these airwaves. He's been on a couple
21:27
Speaker 3: of different programs. Doctor Michael Siegel up at Penn State astronomer, astrophysicist.
21:34
Speaker 3: I have to say it slowly because one time I
21:36
Speaker 3: called him an astrologist, and that's a whole different thing.
21:39
Speaker 3: But I don't know, buddy, Maybe is Boeing's Jupiter not
21:43
Speaker 3: in retrograde? Is that why Boeing's having so many problems
21:46
Speaker 3: with their spacecraft and domestic aircrafts are.
21:50
Speaker 4: Well.
21:51
Speaker 11: I guess there has to be some explanation. So just
21:55
Speaker 11: to update your audience, that's what's happened. So Boeing's Starliner
22:00
Speaker 11: supposed to be a capsule that will go to the
22:02
Speaker 11: space station and be used for other purposes. It's a
22:04
Speaker 11: partially reusable launch vehicle, and after years of delays and
22:09
Speaker 11: cost overruns, they finally did launch in the spring. But
22:12
Speaker 11: when they got to the space station, they discovered they
22:14
Speaker 11: were having problems with the flow of helium and all
22:17
Speaker 11: the space station in I believe June, and they have
22:21
Speaker 11: not returned yet. The reason is because NASA is still
22:25
Speaker 11: not confident that they've worked out their problems with the
22:28
Speaker 11: maneuvering jets, and if you're going to re enter the atmosphere,
22:31
Speaker 11: that's kind of important to be able to maneuver. If
22:35
Speaker 11: you remember the movie Apollo thirteen, they talk about this,
22:39
Speaker 11: how you know you have to enter at a certain angle.
22:41
Speaker 11: If you enter too shallow, you're going to burn up.
22:44
Speaker 11: If you enter two or too shallow, you're going to
22:47
Speaker 11: bunce off the atmosphere. If you enter two deep fast,
22:49
Speaker 11: you're going to burn up. You want to land in
22:51
Speaker 11: a specific area, and so NASA has been weighing the risk,
22:55
Speaker 11: and this week they announced they've decided that they're not
22:58
Speaker 11: going to put the astronauts back on the liner. They're
23:00
Speaker 11: going to return it unmanned, and that the astaurants will
23:04
Speaker 11: returning on a SpaceX Dragon capsule in the spring. And
23:07
Speaker 11: that also just come with some risks because the Boeing
23:10
Speaker 11: spacesuits are not compatible with the Dragon X capsule, so
23:13
Speaker 11: they will have to be in the capsule without spacesuits.
23:16
Speaker 11: But after weighing the factors, now have decided that was
23:18
Speaker 11: less of a risk than bringing them back in starliner.
23:22
Speaker 11: Now it's possible starline or return just fine, But they
23:25
Speaker 11: didn't think that it was certain enough to do that.
23:28
Speaker 3: This where do we put this? Because obviously what they're
23:31
Speaker 3: trying to avoid here is one of the most dangerous
23:33
Speaker 3: parts of space trial is actually coming back into the atmosphere.
23:36
Speaker 3: Those of us that are enough to remember the Columbia disaster,
23:39
Speaker 3: give us a list of work. They're obviously leaning towards.
23:42
Speaker 3: Let's not lose life because we still haven't technically lost
23:44
Speaker 3: somebody in space. We've lost them going up, we've lost
23:46
Speaker 3: them on the pad. We lost Columbia coming back in,
23:49
Speaker 3: so that's paramount. But this isn't Apollo one. It's not
23:52
Speaker 3: those two things, so it's not going to be a
23:54
Speaker 3: loss of life. How big of a disaster is this?
23:56
Speaker 3: Because you mentioned Apollo thirteen, most people have seen the
23:59
Speaker 3: move that was described in the prologue as a successful failure.
24:05
Speaker 3: What level of failure are we dealing with here, because
24:08
Speaker 3: on the aggregate, it's like, well, we just stranded astronauts
24:11
Speaker 3: in space with noncompatible space suits. This sounds really bad,
24:13
Speaker 3: even though they're not in physical danger at the moment.
24:16
Speaker 3: Give us some kind of a scale here on how
24:18
Speaker 3: bad this really is of a problem.
24:21
Speaker 11: I don't think it's as big a it's certainly not
24:24
Speaker 11: as big as Challenger a Columbia like that, but that's
24:27
Speaker 11: what they're trying to avoid You could probably return the
24:29
Speaker 11: astronauts safety in the star Liner capsule, but the potential
24:34
Speaker 11: for that being.
24:34
Speaker 7: That kind of disaster is very real, and.
24:37
Speaker 11: So they've evaluated the options and decided this is the
24:41
Speaker 11: least risky course of ask action. Now the astronauts are
24:44
Speaker 11: aren't in danger on the space station.
24:47
Speaker 7: They have plenty of food, they have plenty of oxygens.
24:49
Speaker 11: The space station can be replenished as needed from other
24:52
Speaker 11: manned capsules, and so that's they're perfectly safe up there.
24:57
Speaker 11: It's just a matter of getting this return.
25:01
Speaker 3: Yeah, Doctor Michael Siegole, he's an astrophysicist and astronomer up
25:04
Speaker 3: at Penn State. What's the part of space travel because people,
25:08
Speaker 3: you know, we just see them go up and go down.
25:10
Speaker 3: What's the part that's really hard here? You talked about compatibility,
25:14
Speaker 3: you talked about the re entry. The science of those
25:18
Speaker 3: things are very separate kind of disciplines, almost right, because
25:21
Speaker 3: you got to get up through the atmosphere one way,
25:23
Speaker 3: you got to come back through the atmosphere another way.
25:25
Speaker 3: We just see the rockets blasting out off. But there's
25:28
Speaker 3: a lot of details and a lot of science into
25:31
Speaker 3: the ins and outs give us one or two things
25:32
Speaker 3: just for the normal person like me. So even I
25:34
Speaker 3: can understand it of just how difficult the science of
25:38
Speaker 3: this kind of stuff is. Because we're banging on Boeing,
25:41
Speaker 3: but we've just gotten used to space travel and we
25:43
Speaker 3: think it's routine. This stuff is really really hard and
25:45
Speaker 3: really cutting edge technology even today.
25:48
Speaker 11: Well yeah, I mean, when you're talking about things in orbit,
25:50
Speaker 11: orbital dynamics are very counterintuitive. It's very because you're moving
25:56
Speaker 11: around the Earth in a circle. You're in this microgravity environment,
26:00
Speaker 11: so your instincts to move this way to get to
26:05
Speaker 11: this location are not going to be very accurate. If
26:09
Speaker 11: you move a certain way, you might actually move towards
26:12
Speaker 11: the space station actually move away from it because of
26:15
Speaker 11: the way that orbits work. When you have a re entry,
26:18
Speaker 11: you have to slow down to speed up, is the
26:20
Speaker 11: joke that they always use. So it's extremely complicated and counterintuitive.
26:25
Speaker 7: But that having been said, we have.
26:28
Speaker 11: Been doing this for sixty plus years and so it's
26:32
Speaker 11: something that we usually are able to do routinely and
26:36
Speaker 11: we haven't had an incident like this where we weren't
26:39
Speaker 11: able to Well, now that's not quite accurate. In the
26:42
Speaker 11: early days of Mercury, we had incidents where we weren't
26:45
Speaker 11: sure if things had ejected, if the heat shields were intact,
26:50
Speaker 11: and so forth. But we're not in the Mercury days.
26:52
Speaker 11: We're really advanced here, and so to have a failure
26:55
Speaker 11: like this on orbit is quite a black eye for
26:59
Speaker 11: a company that has had more black eyes than an
27:01
Speaker 11: Olympic boxing team.
27:03
Speaker 3: Yeah, doctor Michael Siegel joining us? Is star Liner done?
27:07
Speaker 3: Here's the problem star Liner's got now, it's a pr problem. Now,
27:11
Speaker 3: So why are we spending our tax dollars on this problem?
27:14
Speaker 3: SpaceX makes them look bad, That's just the reality of it,
27:16
Speaker 3: because they're going to get compared, and it was over budget,
27:20
Speaker 3: over promising, has under delivered to this point. I think
27:23
Speaker 3: that's fair to say. Is this going to be the
27:25
Speaker 3: end of star Liner or at least a long pause
27:27
Speaker 3: and then a bureaucratic death five or ten years from now?
27:30
Speaker 3: Where do you think star Liner and Boeing goes from here?
27:33
Speaker 11: I think they have to really go back to the
27:35
Speaker 11: drawing board and see what they're doing here. I don't
27:37
Speaker 11: think Starliner is. There's a lot of money invested, a
27:40
Speaker 11: lot of reputation at stake, and I don't think the
27:45
Speaker 11: pup are unfixable. But the bigger problem here the owing
27:52
Speaker 11: where we've seen We've seen it in the airlines in airplanes.
27:56
Speaker 11: Now we're seeing it with Starliner where they just aren't.
28:00
Speaker 11: It's shocking for me to be saying that Boeing is
28:03
Speaker 11: doing something like the Titan of American industry. This is
28:06
Speaker 11: one of those companies you invest in when you're there
28:11
Speaker 11: maybe safe and to have a you know, something like this,
28:15
Speaker 11: one of the biggest companies in the world have this
28:19
Speaker 11: kind of failure is I think an indictment of everything.
28:23
Speaker 11: They sort of apotheosis if everything that's been going wrong
28:26
Speaker 11: for the company lately.
28:28
Speaker 3: Is it fair? Doctor Michael Siegel. We hear it all
28:30
Speaker 3: the time, like, hey, we put a man on the
28:32
Speaker 3: moon and now we can't even do this, and then
28:34
Speaker 3: they'll point to Boeing Starline or whatever else is going on.
28:38
Speaker 3: There's real questions about, you know, the space station is
28:40
Speaker 3: saving Boeing on this one. There's real questions how much
28:43
Speaker 3: longer we're going to be able to keep that thing
28:44
Speaker 3: up there. We're already talking about when are we going
28:46
Speaker 3: to cycle it down? And there's no real replacement on
28:49
Speaker 3: the horizon. What's a fair and not fair comparison, because
28:53
Speaker 3: that's then there is like, hey, we put a man
28:54
Speaker 3: on the moon fifty years ago, and now we can't
28:56
Speaker 3: do anything that's unfair. Scale that back down to something
29:00
Speaker 3: that is fair of like, yes, we're probably not doing
29:02
Speaker 3: everything we can, but here's the reality of it.
29:05
Speaker 11: I mean, the reality is we are in entering a
29:08
Speaker 11: golden ange of space exploration. It's different from what we
29:11
Speaker 11: were doing before. In the Apollo era, we had a
29:14
Speaker 11: massive government program where basically they would just they just
29:18
Speaker 11: threw as much money as they could at the program
29:20
Speaker 11: until the problems were solved. And to be fair, we
29:23
Speaker 11: did get a bit lucky. Many you may you know,
29:26
Speaker 11: probably some.
29:27
Speaker 7: Of your listeners know Nixon.
29:28
Speaker 11: Actually prepared speeches prepared as the Apollo astronauts didn't make it,
29:33
Speaker 11: and because at that point we didn't really know, it
29:35
Speaker 11: was still a huge risk. We are now getting into
29:37
Speaker 11: an era where space more commercialized, it's more routine. We
29:40
Speaker 11: have more launches every year now than we had in
29:44
Speaker 11: decades before, and so you know, this is a failure,
29:50
Speaker 11: but we have many more success stories, not just with SpaceX,
29:53
Speaker 11: but with other corporate developed reusable launch vehicles. Cheaper launch
29:58
Speaker 11: vehicles were lying launching tons of supplite. There's so much
30:03
Speaker 11: progress being made on a very practical, down to Earth
30:08
Speaker 11: tended level of getting things into space and making this
30:12
Speaker 11: an industry that is sustainable and commercial and a huge
30:16
Speaker 11: part of our economy. So it's a different thing that
30:19
Speaker 11: we're doing now. And NASA's still trying to push the
30:22
Speaker 11: envelope to get us back to the Moon, to get
30:25
Speaker 11: us to Mars the next century. But that's all cutting
30:29
Speaker 11: edge stuff.
30:30
Speaker 3: Yeah, let's get up and back a time or two
30:32
Speaker 3: before we start worrying about the moon though. Doctor Michael
30:34
Speaker 3: Siegel appreciate your time. Got a great YouTube channel, by
30:37
Speaker 3: the way. He was on with Coop and Weekly about
30:39
Speaker 3: that last week about he reviews things from a scientific
30:41
Speaker 3: perspective like Back to the Future and my favorite most
30:44
Speaker 3: scientific movie ever, Armageddon, which he just loves. I know,
30:47
Speaker 3: doctor Michael Siegel, really appreciate your time, sir.
30:51
Speaker 7: Thanks for having me on again.
30:52
Speaker 3: Andrew, Yes, sir, we'll talk to you soon. Make sure
30:54
Speaker 3: you're following him on social media and YouTube. Amazing story
30:58
Speaker 3: that you know, this is where we are and people
30:59
Speaker 3: get real upset about it. But I'm just shocked cooped
31:03
Speaker 3: that this story isn't bigger than what it actually is.
31:05
Speaker 3: It just really surprised me. We really are complacent with
31:08
Speaker 3: where we at our own space travel, aren't we.
31:10
Speaker 4: I think we've lost the plot a little bit on
31:12
Speaker 4: space exploration. I don't know. You talk to a lot
31:15
Speaker 4: of people, and it seems like, you know, we walked
31:17
Speaker 4: on the Moon before I was born, But even when
31:19
Speaker 4: I was a kid and I was first getting into
31:22
Speaker 4: you know, building space shuttle models and things like that,
31:25
Speaker 4: it seems like that there was a you know, like
31:28
Speaker 4: a combined spirit of space act. It was almost like
31:31
Speaker 4: a patriotic endeavor, you know, it was like something that
31:33
Speaker 4: you really rooted for. Now when you talk to people,
31:36
Speaker 4: it's like the it's like almost a lot of people
31:39
Speaker 4: can't be bothered by the idea or like we can't
31:43
Speaker 4: fund multiple things in the country. Why are we exploring
31:46
Speaker 4: the moon again when there's people going hungry on Earth
31:48
Speaker 4: or whatever it might be. And I don't know, I
31:50
Speaker 4: get kind of I mean, I get it, but also
31:52
Speaker 4: there's a million things going on. I mean, we we
31:54
Speaker 4: walk into gun on a bunch of things at the
31:56
Speaker 4: same time, and exploration of space and our oceans and
32:00
Speaker 4: things like that, that the unknown. That's what human nature
32:03
Speaker 4: is all about. We can't live in stasis. We have
32:06
Speaker 4: to explore and to learn more, and otherwise we just
32:09
Speaker 4: I think you atrophy and dial. We have to explore.
32:11
Speaker 4: That's what we do.
32:12
Speaker 3: Yeah, I think we're losing. I don't think we need
32:16
Speaker 3: to spend every dime we got, like the Space race,
32:18
Speaker 3: where it's an all effort all the time. I think
32:20
Speaker 3: we do lose something as a country and the people
32:22
Speaker 3: when we don't aspire to stuff. I think that's a
32:24
Speaker 3: fair way to put it. But the thing, the biggest
32:27
Speaker 3: problem NASA's got is SpaceX makes them look bad because
32:29
Speaker 3: SpaceX is doing it differently, and at some point they're
32:32
Speaker 3: gonna have to, you know, reconcile those two things. Dave

35:48
Speaker 3: today is the day we are going to have some
35:50
Speaker 3: high school football tonight. Wcchsnetwork dot Com Slash Sports has
35:54
Speaker 3: you covered as a high school football season kicks off tonight.
35:59
Speaker 3: Independent it's Herbert Hoover. It's been pushed back to eight
36:02
Speaker 3: pm because of heat, but it'll be over on ninety
36:04
Speaker 3: six point one FM. Make sure you listen to that
36:07
Speaker 3: Friday night right here on five eighty Hurricane and Huntington.
36:10
Speaker 3: That's a game people already talking about that might have
36:12
Speaker 3: playoff implications. Hard to believe on the very first game,
36:15
Speaker 3: but that one might do. It should be a good one.
36:17
Speaker 3: And of course the big one WU Game Day. Metro
36:19
Speaker 3: News has you covered almost dust till dawn. Eight am
36:22
Speaker 3: covered starts for the big Penn State game. Of course,
36:25

36:30
Speaker 3: Game Day, make sure you're listening to the radio. My
36:32
Speaker 3: mom will be because she loves it. She radio and listens.
36:35
Speaker 3: We talked about that yesterday, Coop. You're a football guy.
36:39
Speaker 3: You like the NFL draft, right sure? You and Weekly
36:43
Speaker 3: were talking yesterday on hotline about the roto drafts and
36:45
Speaker 3: fantasy drafts. Oh yeah, Well it got me thinking though,
36:49
Speaker 3: because yesterday the governor is at the Chamber. We actually
36:51
Speaker 3: talked to Larry Pack yesterday on program and if you
36:53
Speaker 3: miss any of these programs, whether it's US guest hosting
36:56
Speaker 3: the normal Dave Allen Show, when Dave gets back off
36:58
Speaker 3: his well earned vacation, wh network, get the podcast shared
37:02
Speaker 3: on your social media, listen to Well we talked to
37:03
Speaker 3: Larry Pack from that conference yesterday, Hoppies broadcasting live from it.
37:07
Speaker 3: But the governor came out and does what governors do.
37:10
Speaker 3: He announced a bunch of more business investments. And it's
37:12
Speaker 3: the Chamber of Commerce, so this is a good time
37:14
Speaker 3: to bring up and talk business stuff. Got me thinking, though,
37:17
Speaker 3: it's a lot lot like the NFL draft or the
37:20
Speaker 3: NBA draft or the base you're hoping it works out.
37:23
Speaker 3: You're thinking it'll work out. Some of the investments you
37:25
Speaker 3: just know are going to work out because they're number
37:27
Speaker 3: one picks. They're blue chip. You know, Babcock and Wilcox
37:31
Speaker 3: is a company has been around for hundreds of years.
37:33
Speaker 3: They know what they're usually doing. Some of them are
37:35
Speaker 3: places you don't really know about, and you're like, I,
37:37
Speaker 3: I don't know if they're gonna make it or not.
37:40
Speaker 3: I'm all for these business investments. I'm excited about them.
37:43
Speaker 3: But I'm always of the mind because look, I didn't
37:46
Speaker 3: start in media. I started in transportation logistics in the military.
37:49
Speaker 3: That's an A to B for C time, for D
37:51
Speaker 3: amount of money. It's a very point A to point
37:54
Speaker 3: B thing, right, I like, is this going to work?
37:57
Speaker 3: So when I hear these announcements, Coop, I tend to
37:59
Speaker 3: start treating them a little bit like I treat the
38:01
Speaker 3: NFL draft, or like trying to watch our boy Beanie
38:04
Speaker 3: Bishop make the series, Like I hope it's gonna work,
38:06
Speaker 3: but I'm not sure until the contract gets signed. We
38:08
Speaker 3: hand out a jersey, right.
38:11
Speaker 4: I think that we've seen some recent examples of this
38:13
Speaker 4: where there's been announcements that haven't quite taken off in
38:16
Speaker 4: and there's there's oftentimes a lot of reasons behind that.
38:20
Speaker 4: Sometimes the reasons are simply that there's not much infrastructure
38:23
Speaker 4: beyond the announcement, and you know, you can announce a
38:26
Speaker 4: lot of things, you know, and it's not always easy
38:28
Speaker 4: to h to make the back end of it work.
38:31
Speaker 4: But yeah, I'm kind of like you with it. We've
38:33
Speaker 4: seen some of the promises that we that have been
38:36
Speaker 4: made over the course of I mean, however long you
38:38
Speaker 4: want to go back. We've seen some of those come
38:39
Speaker 4: to fruition. Some of them that you knew were pyeing
38:42
Speaker 4: the sky and weren't going to work to begin with
38:44
Speaker 4: the hyperloop in West Virginia, for example. Anybody that the
38:48
Speaker 4: attention knew that that was not going to be a starter,
38:51
Speaker 4: and I was surprised that there were people that were
38:53
Speaker 4: surprised and disappointment when that project ultimately became obviously wasn't
38:57
Speaker 4: going to happen. I mean, there's some things that should
38:59
Speaker 4: be fairly off that are sort of headline burners, and
39:03
Speaker 4: there's other things that should work under the hood. It's
39:06
Speaker 4: yet to be determined on some of these initiatives that
39:08
Speaker 4: we're mentioned on how well it's going to work. But
39:10
Speaker 4: some of them will, you know, some of them will,
39:12
Speaker 4: and we just have to make the most of the
39:14
Speaker 4: opportunities that come.
39:15
Speaker 3: Yeah, I think trust but Verify is pretty much undefeated
39:18
Speaker 3: at this point, and I'm all for all these investments.
39:20
Speaker 3: I just think we need to be very careful, especially
39:22
Speaker 3: when we have these public private partnership kind of deals,
39:25
Speaker 3: because now you got money involved. But that's how I
39:28
Speaker 3: tend to treat like. We've covered a couple things that
39:30
Speaker 3: get people fired up. The cell phone school and band
39:33
Speaker 3: gets people fired up. We talked about space yesterday we
39:36
Speaker 3: talked a little more West Virginia politics.
39:38
Speaker 16: Coach.
39:38
Speaker 3: What's going on the text line? What are the people
39:40
Speaker 3: saying that they want to talk about?
39:42
Speaker 4: Well, well, let's see the most recent. We'll go in
39:44
Speaker 4: reverse order, so we'll hit our most recent topic first.
39:47
Speaker 4: This is from the seven six zero non zero zero.
39:49
Speaker 4: What if we aspired to make sure American children had
39:51
Speaker 4: access to healthy food, healthcare, and quality education before trying
39:55
Speaker 4: to put people on the moon Again, I know it's
39:57
Speaker 4: a socialist idea, but it's in the spirit of Labor Day.
40:00
Speaker 3: Okay, but here's here's two things on this. We can
40:03
Speaker 3: walk in chew gum on the same time. But if
40:05
Speaker 3: you go down the list of things that we got
40:07
Speaker 3: from the space race technology wise, a lot of the
40:09
Speaker 3: cell phone stuff, communication stuff, microwaves, the way we prep
40:14
Speaker 3: food fuel the technology list that we got from the
40:17
Speaker 3: space race. There is an argument to be made that
40:19
Speaker 3: when you invest in something that big, it has a
40:22
Speaker 3: trickle down effect to the rest of the world. That's
40:24
Speaker 3: one of the reasons NASA's having a problems with SpaceX
40:26
Speaker 3: because SpaceX is blowing them away on the innovation side
40:29
Speaker 3: of it, and those things matter. So I think we
40:31
Speaker 3: can walk in chew gum. There should be a balance.
40:33
Speaker 3: You got a point there, but it's also can't be
40:36
Speaker 3: an overriding philosophy. I think that's a fair way to
40:38
Speaker 3: do it.
40:38
Speaker 2: Coop.
40:38
Speaker 4: What else is on the text line, Well, the very
40:39
Speaker 4: next one was how can we afford nastas? And this
40:43
Speaker 4: is sarcasm. I want to just preface this with this
40:45
Speaker 4: is sarcasm, So read this with a sarcastic voice. How
40:48
Speaker 4: can we let me see if I can do it?
40:50
Speaker 4: How can we afford NASA spending in this country? I mean,
40:52
Speaker 4: it's an astronomical point two percent of the federal budget.
40:56
Speaker 4: Defense spending, on the other hand, is a meager thirteen
40:58
Speaker 4: to fifteen percent of the federal busk.
41:00
Speaker 3: Yeah, the servicing of the national debt is more than
41:04
Speaker 3: the DoD budget now, by the way, So if you
41:06
Speaker 3: want to go down that road, I'll go there. But
41:07
Speaker 3: most people don't really want to have that conversation. Again,
41:11
Speaker 3: our spending is out of control and needs to be
41:13
Speaker 3: reeled in. But a lot of that spending on things
41:15
Speaker 3: that we really don't need. The space program is a
41:17
Speaker 3: small part of that that we could probably. Yeah, of
41:19
Speaker 3: course there's fraud, wasting, abusing the space program. There is
41:21
Speaker 3: an education, there is in the military. There isn't everything. However,
41:24
Speaker 3: that's not a reason to not do it at all.
41:26
Speaker 3: I don't think give us one more coup.
41:27
Speaker 4: Yeah, and by the way, I think the point here
41:28
Speaker 4: was that we invest so little in this exploration anyway
41:32
Speaker 4: that maybe we could afford a little bit more aspirational exploration.
41:37
Speaker 4: Let's see, and we got another moon landing skeptic. You know,
41:42
Speaker 4: did we really land on the moon fifty years ago?
41:44
Speaker 4: I wish we had Michael. I wish we held over
41:46
Speaker 4: Michael for that one, because that's one that kind of
41:49
Speaker 4: drives me nuts a little bit, to be honest with you.
41:51
Speaker 3: Yeah, have you ever seen the video of buzz Aldron,
41:53
Speaker 3: and I think he was in his late seventies at
41:54
Speaker 3: a time, just decking the guy. Don't do that. Don't
41:57
Speaker 3: go around punching people. But one of the fake landing
42:00
Speaker 3: people got up on buzz Aldron and that did not
42:02
Speaker 3: go well for him. And buzz Aldron won that fight
42:04
Speaker 3: with one swing, I will put it that way. But yeah, no,
42:06
Speaker 3: they didn't fake the moon landing. There's just no way
42:08
Speaker 3: to do that. But I don't know we're going to
42:11
Speaker 3: actually go back to the Moon. I think it may
42:12
Speaker 3: be more of a robotic thing. I know SpaceX is
42:14
Speaker 3: really pushing it, but I mean, I'm forty five. Am
42:16
Speaker 3: I going to see it in my lifetime? I don't know.
42:18
Speaker 3: I'm a little skeptical, you know.
42:19
Speaker 4: There there was a series of books that the that
42:22
Speaker 4: the SAFI series on. I think it started on sci fi.
42:25
Speaker 4: I forget where it ended up, but the Expanse was
42:26
Speaker 4: based on had a lot of really militaristic and business
42:31
Speaker 4: aspects in near science fiction, but very kind of hard
42:35
Speaker 4: science fiction, realistic. I thought it had a pretty decent
42:39
Speaker 4: idea of what the Solar System could look like at
42:41
Speaker 4: some point in the future. You have minors on planets
42:44
Speaker 4: that extract valuable minerals and things like that that get
42:49
Speaker 4: turned into rocket fuel and materials to make ships and
42:52
Speaker 4: stuff like that. But you know it, it's not like space.
42:55
Speaker 4: It's not like star trek travel where everybody's zipping around
42:58
Speaker 4: at faster than the speed of light stuff like that.
43:00
Speaker 4: It's a very inclusive within our Solar System where people
43:04
Speaker 4: move around and I've always felt like the books. I've
43:07
Speaker 4: read several of the books, and I've watched the first
43:09
Speaker 4: season of the TV series. I always felt like that
43:12
Speaker 4: was a fairly realistic representation of what could happen in
43:15
Speaker 4: our future.
43:16
Speaker 3: We've I've talked to doctor Siegel about it before on
43:18
Speaker 3: my other programs, on my podcast Hotel Show you can
43:20
Speaker 3: find out wherever podcasts are. I've talked to him before.
43:23
Speaker 3: Something like a moon base or a Mars base isn't
43:25
Speaker 3: what Elon Musk is talking about. It's a factory. It's
43:29
Speaker 3: going to be a factory that produces oxygen and minerals
43:33
Speaker 3: and things that you need to grow food, and things
43:35
Speaker 3: that you need to create water on a unlucular level
43:38
Speaker 3: and create nitrogen and hydrogen and oxygen and all the
43:40
Speaker 3: various gases you need when you think space stuff, and
43:43
Speaker 3: some SciFi does really good with this, and some sifi
43:45
Speaker 3: does really bad with this. When you talk about like
43:48
Speaker 3: a lunar base or a Mars base, it's not going
43:50
Speaker 3: to be a resort. It's going to be a factory.
43:52
Speaker 3: And I think thinking of that way kind of helps
43:54
Speaker 3: dial it back in a little bit. Data Island Shows

46:27
Speaker 14: And Alex.
46:30
Speaker 2: Hey, Alex, how did the interview go?
46:32
Speaker 18: I did it?
46:33
Speaker 5: I got the jump.
46:34
Speaker 12: I can't believe it.
46:35
Speaker 15: I knew it.
46:36
Speaker 9: Let's meet up later to celebrate and.
46:38
Speaker 17: Diego Mom, I go first visit the Science Frold with

47:12
Speaker 3: Fivety live for Dave Allen showing WCHS. I am Andrew
47:15
Speaker 3: Donaldson pilling in for the vacationing Dave Allen. You can
47:18
Speaker 3: find me on Twitter for the fire on Twitter or
47:20
Speaker 3: Andrew Donson just typing my name, that'll all come up.
47:23
Speaker 3: I also write for a commentary for West Virginia Watch
47:26
Speaker 3: Fate Tribune. Always happy to get to do West Virginia stuff.
47:29
Speaker 3: Appreciate coop and whs. Letting me say in all right,
47:32
Speaker 3: if you're my age, you're older, and you are a
47:34
Speaker 3: WU fan and you're excited about Penn State, get ready
47:37
Speaker 3: because you're about to get all up in your fields.
47:39
Speaker 18: Ryan hit it nighttime and Morgan John West Virginia on
47:44
Speaker 18: the campus at West Virginia University Halloween weekend and the
47:47
Speaker 18: goblin riding in on a broom is wearing a sport coat,
47:50
Speaker 18: a sweater and a red tie. His gray hair is
47:53
Speaker 18: part of neatly on the left side and topping off
47:56
Speaker 18: a prominent nose, and the persistent prom is a pair
47:59
Speaker 18: of eye glasses the trademark of one of the nation's
48:02
Speaker 18: most successful football coaches, Joe Paternos. Joe is accompanied here
48:07
Speaker 18: by a frightening group a fight flant ghosts, the number
48:11
Speaker 18: two ranked and undefeated netde Lions of Penn State. A
48:14
Speaker 18: frightening scene, but Don Neeland's Mountaineers enjoy walking in where
48:18
Speaker 18: angels fear to tread. So tonight, in ideal autumn weather,
48:22
Speaker 18: they will meet the invaders. They will do battle as
48:25
Speaker 18: a prohibitive underdog, but they will play this game with
48:27
Speaker 18: the knowledge that anything can happen in football. On any
48:30
Speaker 18: given night, on any given field, it can happen, and
48:33
Speaker 18: they want it to happen tonight. The state of West
48:36
Speaker 18: Virginia is wired in on MSN for this effort, and
48:38
Speaker 18: it will be our the action as these two old
48:41
Speaker 18: rivals get together. So light up your pumpkins, but on
48:44
Speaker 18: your scariest Halloween mask and keep that radio close by.
48:48
Speaker 18: Has the hills of West Virginia resound on the souths
48:51
Speaker 18: of cold blue football and the West Virginia University Mountaineers
48:55
Speaker 18: are on the air.
48:57
Speaker 3: I'm not only ready to run to the effort, I'll
49:00
Speaker 3: callably crawl the whole way through and how good is that?
49:03
Speaker 4: Oh my goodness, man, there there's just something I mean
49:06
Speaker 4: that's growing up, right. I mean, I've been listening to
49:08
Speaker 4: Tony Credy forever and I know Tony and Tony's a
49:10
Speaker 4: great guy, the Playboy play voice of the Mountaineers. But
49:14
Speaker 4: there's something that from my childhood that just recalls Jack
49:17
Speaker 4: Fleming's voice on the radio in our little living room
49:21
Speaker 4: on a fall day with the windows open in our house,
49:24
Speaker 4: breeze going through, and that usually you know, those those
49:27
Speaker 4: pre big East Days noon kickoffs or one o'clock kickoffs,
49:30
Speaker 4: you know, and just get ready for those. Man, yeah,
49:33
Speaker 4: I feel it down to my down to my bones,
49:36
Speaker 4: no doubt about it.
49:37
Speaker 3: And West Virginia used to do when they first started
49:39
Speaker 3: doing those ESPN Thursday night games, West Virginia did a
49:42
Speaker 3: ton of them because that was the only national TV
49:43
Speaker 3: games I could get on back then, right, And they
49:45
Speaker 3: do that, so we would mute the ESPN feed and
49:48
Speaker 3: just listen to Jack Fleming from the radio and it
49:50
Speaker 3: never sinked up just right. But man, that that that
49:53
Speaker 3: crescendo from apple Atchian Spring, that's the piece of music
49:56
Speaker 3: the band's playing there. That's the crescendo for you know,
49:58
Speaker 3: simple thing boy that hits and heat timed to just
50:01
Speaker 3: every single freak doing my prep work. Listen to that,
50:04
Speaker 3: and I sent it to you. I was getting goosebumps,
50:06
Speaker 3: getting all emotional about it. It just it just hits you.
50:09
Speaker 3: WU Penn State Saturday. It's as big as it gets.
50:13
Speaker 3: Fox crews all there, McAfee's there today. They called off
50:17
Speaker 3: school for it today. Up there. That's good work if
50:19
Speaker 3: you can get it. Metro News is going to be
50:21
Speaker 3: covering basically does still done eight am until however long
50:24
Speaker 3: it takes to get it done in the evening kickoff
50:26
Speaker 3: in noon fall it. I'm excited about it, Coop. Do
50:29
Speaker 3: you got a prediction?
50:30
Speaker 4: Man, I'm not. I'm trying to not fall on the
50:33
Speaker 4: side of what scares me a little bit. Earlier in
50:36
Speaker 4: the in spring, this was targeted by a lot of
50:39
Speaker 4: West Virginia fans, of course, saying hey, we can get
50:41
Speaker 4: Penn State. And then you started hearing some other people
50:43
Speaker 4: saying this might be a good place for an upset.
50:46
Speaker 4: The problem that I'm seeing now is it's on everybody's
50:49
Speaker 4: upset watch. Like you look at every single outlet that
50:53
Speaker 4: has their upset watch for week one and it's one
50:55
Speaker 4: of the top games on upset Watch. That bothers me
50:58
Speaker 4: a little bit much. Yeah, that bothers I like to
51:01
Speaker 4: be more under the radar than that. That means that
51:02
Speaker 4: Penn State's going to be aware of us. If everything
51:05
Speaker 4: is right in the world, the good guys will win,
51:07
Speaker 4: which is obviously West Virginia in this case over ten State.
51:10
Speaker 4: But we'll see. I think this will be a close game.
51:12
Speaker 4: I think if West Virginia plays well when special teams
51:16
Speaker 4: and on defense, that it's just going to be down
51:18
Speaker 4: to the offense. Everybody wants for Garrett Green to have
51:21
Speaker 4: the ability to show that he should be in the
51:23
Speaker 4: national limelight. That they feel he's been a little bit disrespected.
51:26
Speaker 4: This is his opportunity to shine, to show that.
51:28
Speaker 3: Yeah, it's tough because first games are always sloppy and messy.
51:31
Speaker 3: So I think just whoever doesn't make the most mistakes
51:33
Speaker 3: and comes the most prepared, dat's going to do it.
51:34
Speaker 3: And the weather might be a factor. We were talking
51:36
Speaker 3: about that yesterday on the hotline. Hey, it's been fun.
51:39
Speaker 3: This is really an honor for me to get to
51:41
Speaker 3: do this. Really appreciate Cooper, appreciate Dave Allen. He does
51:45
Speaker 3: such a great job. I hope he enjoys his vacation.
51:47
Speaker 3: Thanks for letting us keep the microphone warm. Thank you,
51:50
Speaker 3: sir Coop for helping me out. Really enjoy it. Five
51:53
Speaker 3: eighty Live is a special program and I thank you
51:56
Speaker 3: so much for letting us sit in so hang in there.
51:59
Speaker 3: Hobbies coming up next. He's coming from the Chamber of Commerce.
52:02
Speaker 3: I'm Andrew Donson for Dale Cooper WCHS. The great production staff.
52:05
Speaker 3: Thank you all so much. Have a good day, Stay hydrated.
52:07
Speaker 3: It's hot out there. We hope you're well. We hope
52:09
Speaker 3: you're well fed. Take care.
