- 0:00Speaker 1: All right, let's see is this a sponsor spread you
- 0:04Speaker 1: by Nightingale College. Oh, yes, it would be, wouldn't it.
- 0:07Speaker 2: Yes, Yes, because it's it's time to talk to Elena
- 0:10Speaker 2: Wood from Nightingale College.
- 0:12Speaker 1: Good morning, good moarning.
- 0:15Speaker 3: Hello.
- 0:16Speaker 2: This is uh how to reduce screen time? And you
- 0:21Speaker 2: do you mean specifically your phone or any kind of screen.
- 0:26Speaker 3: I'm focusing mostly specifically on the phone, but you could
- 0:31Speaker 3: you could use these for other screens as well.
- 0:34Speaker 2: Yeah, well, you know the best way I find. I
- 0:37Speaker 2: find I don't get caught up in it too much
- 0:39Speaker 2: because I don't look at social media very often.
- 0:43Speaker 3: And if you that's such a big one.
- 0:45Speaker 2: If you start looking at Instagram, it just sucks you
- 0:49Speaker 2: in and you an hour goes by and you don't
- 0:51Speaker 2: realize it.
- 0:51Speaker 1: But let's let's start. Let's start where you where you
- 0:54Speaker 1: want to start here? How do you reduce screen Yeah?
- 0:58Speaker 3: The first tip I have is before picking up your phone,
- 1:02Speaker 3: say out loud the reason you're picking it up. It
- 1:06Speaker 3: might be something like checking this text message because I'm bored,
- 1:12Speaker 3: just because I.
- 1:13Speaker 1: Want to play solitaire.
- 1:15Speaker 3: Yes, yes, So this does a couple of things. It
- 1:19Speaker 3: helps to keep us honest. So if I am picking
- 1:22Speaker 3: up my phone and I say I'm checking this text message,
- 1:26Speaker 3: I'm more likely to check the text message and then
- 1:29Speaker 3: be done. It also helps us realize how many times
- 1:33Speaker 3: we're picking up the phone for kind of no reason,
- 1:37Speaker 3: actually just to keep ourselves busy. And I've been doing
- 1:42Speaker 3: this for a few weeks and it has helped so much.
- 1:46Speaker 1: You know, a good way to avoid picking up the phone.
- 1:49Speaker 2: They should start making the phones weigh likes.
- 1:55Speaker 1: I love.
- 1:55Speaker 3: That would be huge.
- 2:01Speaker 1: Yeah, hey, what's what's next?
- 2:04Speaker 3: I mean, next recommendation is when you're reaching to pick
- 2:07Speaker 3: up the phone, stop and count to ten. This pause
- 2:12Speaker 3: gives us the opportunity to kind of recalibrate and go
- 2:16Speaker 3: from autopilot into being intentional. So just that ten second break,
- 2:23Speaker 3: it can really help us to not lose that hour
- 2:26Speaker 3: to Instagram all of a.
- 2:27Speaker 2: Sudden, and then my wife will say, why didn't you
- 2:31Speaker 2: answer my text message?
- 2:34Speaker 3: I would buy counting to ten?
- 2:35Speaker 1: Yeah right, all right, what's next?
- 2:40Speaker 3: The next recommendation is to create distance, and I mean
- 2:44Speaker 3: physical distance between you and your phone. Leave it in
- 2:48Speaker 3: the other room, resist the urge to carry it in
- 2:51Speaker 3: your pocket everywhere you go. Just things like that where
- 2:55Speaker 3: it's not always within arms reach.
- 2:58Speaker 2: And again if you made it thirty pounds, but also help.
- 3:01Speaker 2: But yeah, okay, what's next?
- 3:03Speaker 3: Absolutely I would not be putting that in my pocket.
- 3:07Speaker 3: What's next next is to fill the gap, replace the
- 3:12Speaker 3: time that you want to scroll with something that is
- 3:15Speaker 3: maybe more helpful. Take a walk, chat with a friend,
- 3:19Speaker 3: write in your journal, whatever it is that just kind
- 3:22Speaker 3: of pulls you away from that mindless screen time.
- 3:25Speaker 1: I don't take my phone when I go on a walk.
- 3:28Speaker 1: I leave it at home.
- 3:29Speaker 2: Oh wait a minute, that's your that's crazy. Why because
- 3:33Speaker 2: who knows what's going to happen to you out there?
- 3:36Speaker 1: You could fall. I'm probably okay, you need.
- 3:39Speaker 2: To you need you know, but if you want to distract,
- 3:42Speaker 2: distraction and you should do what I do.
- 3:43Speaker 1: I've taken up whittling.
- 3:46Speaker 3: Wow, yeah, I love that.
- 3:48Speaker 2: Get not a knife and a hunk of balts of wood.
- 3:50Speaker 2: And I made an elephant the other day.
- 3:53Speaker 1: Wow, he didn't, Elena, don't let I don't.
- 3:57Speaker 3: Believe this is real or not.
- 3:59Speaker 1: It's not. It's not true. That's not true.
- 4:02Speaker 3: I was so impressed for a minute.
- 4:06Speaker 1: It's barrows of soap. I made a borrow soap look
- 4:09Speaker 1: like a gun. Geez Okay, what's next?
- 4:13Speaker 3: Oh my goodness. My next recommendation is to go analog,
- 4:18Speaker 3: grab a notebook, get a hard copy of a book
- 4:22Speaker 3: from your library, start knitting or whittling, just doing things
- 4:28Speaker 3: that maybe you would typically do on your phone. Do
- 4:31Speaker 3: that on a piece of paper instead of on the phone.
- 4:35Speaker 2: Yeah, I always can't have it. I always have a
- 4:37Speaker 2: pen and a notebook with me almost always.
- 4:39Speaker 3: Yeah, I love that, even on my walk, always prepared.
- 4:46Speaker 1: Yeah, you know, what's next.
- 4:50Speaker 3: My next recommendation is to limit exposure first thing in
- 4:54Speaker 3: the morning and the last thing at night. We often
- 4:58Speaker 3: book and our days with scrolling on the phone, checking
- 5:02Speaker 3: the email, right for speeding in the morning. This is
- 5:05Speaker 3: one that I am working on and struggling with quite
- 5:09Speaker 3: a bit.
- 5:09Speaker 2: Well, it's kind of hard to break that because your
- 5:12Speaker 2: your phone is also your alarm clock.
- 5:14Speaker 3: Yeah yeah, yeah, So if you can get like an
- 5:19Speaker 3: old fashioned i'll call it alarm clock, that can definitely help,
- 5:23Speaker 3: if you can leave the phone outside of the bedroom.
- 5:26Speaker 3: But yeah, this one is one that is difficult for me,
- 5:29Speaker 3: so I'm working on it.
- 5:30Speaker 1: Might I suggest the clock radio?
- 5:33Speaker 3: Yeah?
- 5:35Speaker 2: Wake Elena, that's all very nice. What what do you recommend?
- 5:40Speaker 2: How do people get to get some more information on
- 5:43Speaker 2: all of this.
- 5:44Speaker 3: You can learn more about this as well as Nightingale's
- 5:46Speaker 3: amazing programs by visiting Nightingale dot edu.
- 5:50Speaker 2: All right, and if you want to find out about whittling,
- 5:51Speaker 2: get a hold of me.
- 5:54Speaker 3: Sounds good.
- 5:54Speaker 1: All right, thanks Elena, thank you.
- 5:57Speaker 3: All right, I was
