- 2:12and welcome to Gatesleepers, the pop culture game show that shines a spotlight
- 2:16onto everyone's favorite fandoms. I am your games master and bold hyper capitalist Matt
- 2:22Watson's obviously not true, but of course we couldn't play these games. Jeff
- 2:28Bezos real life like Uther Jeffer, you know you know what? I was
- 2:30more focused on the bold thing than being staunchly anti capitalist. So yeah,
- 2:35but of course we couldn't play these games without our pair of Kryptonian captains.
- 2:39Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No, it's or Dres
- 2:42Stevenson. It's me in the sky inexplicably, and he's truth, Justice and
- 2:50the British way, sorry, the American way. It's Jason Owyn mat In
- 2:57the edit put the John Williams Superman at dav A. You're doing a bit.
- 3:06Oh this is for the patrons. I'm in a Superman shirt. I'm
- 3:10ready. Motherfucker's you kept that so well hidden? Here I go. Look
- 3:15at how ripped he is. Look at a shaded muscle. Oh yeah,
- 3:21so hello captains. I can see you're very much ready, Jason for this
- 3:24episode, so I don't even need to ask you. Are you ready for
- 3:28a series of games about one of the first superheroes but sort of a middle
- 3:31period alien. You're ready for that period? Yeah, it'd be louds aliens
- 3:37before. Yeah, I guess that makes sense. Yeah, I'm really ready.
- 3:39I'm really Oh yeah, I oh the glasses gone, whether Asian tile
- 3:47floor and cheer. I think I'm as ready as I'm gonna be sure not
- 3:53not a Superman fan, Audra, Oh, I mean I like him.
- 3:55He's Superman is not. I haven't watched enough to be confident. Okay,
- 4:02well have you watched of Superman? That's an incredible I haven't. Okay,
- 4:12nothing, I haven't watched any. But I did do Drinkipedia episodes on Red
- 4:18Sun. Yeah, that is true. Yeah, and they were good and
- 4:21oh gosh, what was the one where it wasn't him but it was him?
- 4:26Oh midnight? And Superman and Batman? But if they were gay for
- 4:30each other? Yeah, or just in general and specifically we're dating. Yeah,
- 4:34I don't remember what the what the context there was? And Batman aren't
- 4:39gay for each other? Misunderstood that, Zack Snyder? Maybe? Um yeah,
- 4:45sorry, I'll dry. So I haven't watched anything, but I have
- 4:47been in a lot of Wikipedia and yeah, fan, you know kyle Pedia,
- 4:57wikis that's the that's the half of that word that is used commonly.
- 5:00But I've been in a lot of those. So I'm hoping that helps me.
- 5:04Yes, I'm sure it will. But I'm sure what will help you
- 5:08more is to have some teammates, because to play these games about Superman,
- 5:12you'll each need to call on a member of the Justice League to fight by
- 5:15your side. Jason, who is your teammates today. He is a comic
- 5:19book writer, a podcaster, and a regular player here at gate Leaper's it's
- 5:24been of the Geekspiration podcast. Hello, Ben Howdy, welcome back to the
- 5:29podcast. Love having you here. I love being here. I love the
- 5:33transition of calling on a member of the Justice League because a little fun fact
- 5:36about Ben as well, A little more appropriate than you think. Ben has
- 5:41a glorious beard, glorious mustache and goatee combo. Yes, where some people
- 5:47might be like, there's some all the raqueen vibes here and Ben, you
- 5:51have cosplayed amazingly as Green arrow and I just love that fact I have.
- 5:57Yeah. I think I posted a picture of you as India as John as
- 6:00Indiana Jones and me is as a Green Arrows. I forgot that John was
- 6:05Indiana Jones because I kept looking at you. I was flabbergasted. It was
- 6:10those It was those underpants outside my tights, green tidy whities. So Ben,
- 6:18Superman are you Are you a fan of the old super Guy? I
- 6:24am? Yeah, Yeah, Superman. He's uh, he's the quintessential hero,
- 6:29you know, Yeah, always it always does the right thing. He's
- 6:31got all the superpowers, he can do all the things. Um is a
- 6:36tough character to write for because of all those things, because he's so overpowered.
- 6:41But there's been some folks that have written some fantastic material for him.
- 6:46So yeah, it's a good dude. Yeah, spanning a whole long time.
- 6:50So yeah, if you if you consumed it all, if you consumed
- 6:54everything, not even close. I was a Marvel kid growing up, so
- 7:00I didn't read as much DC as some people. Speaking of some people,
- 7:10Ultra, who is joining you today. He's a comic book writer, a
- 7:14podcaster, and also a returning player. He's gonna help me out a lot.
- 7:19It's John of the Gee Exploration Podcast. Hello, John, Welcome to
- 7:24the podcast. So get to have you back. Yeah, I'm happy to
- 7:27be back. It was a lot of fun the first time, and I'm
- 7:30always jealous when I get to hear about Ben's good times on the show.
- 7:35But I'm really looking forward to this. This is this is the right one
- 7:39for me to be on. Hopefully, hopefully I can give you a reasonable
- 7:43amount of help, Autra, so you'll know more than me. That's all
- 7:48I can ask in this crazy Galaxy. So so John huge Superman fan.
- 7:57Yeah, Yeah, he's He's my favorite. He's always been my favorite as
- 8:03long as I can remember. I was running around in Superman pj's and you
- 8:07know, cutting my teeth on on drawing Superman and reading Superman comics. You
- 8:11know, I've I've always been a humongous fan, despite you know, him
- 8:16never being really received as like, you know, the cool guy, which
- 8:20I'm actually kind of surprised to hear all the love here, like I expected
- 8:24somebody to be talking shit. I think I want to expand on this a
- 8:26little bit more because going into this episode, we're gonna talk a lot about
- 8:28Superman, and people I think right off the back are going to have this
- 8:31opinion of, yes, he is really hard to write for. I think
- 8:35a lot of normal people, oh you've you've, you've dropped that very early,
- 8:39and the norm Yeah. I think a lot of Norman's think that Superman
- 8:43is boring, and it is an opinion that is valid to some extent.
- 8:46I think the thing that makes Superman interesting is not his power set, but
- 8:50the fact that he is like a symbol, right and like the gravitas of
- 8:54his character is really interesting. Good people to a lot of people are not
- 8:58interested. To me, they are because I think it's harder to be a
- 9:01good person. I think it's harder to like bear that weight and like remain
- 9:07like a moral compass. So because it's so easy for him to snap right,
- 9:09it's so easy for him to just flip that coin and just say effet
- 9:13with his like power set, and I think that's yeah, yeah, And
- 9:18that's where interesting Superman stories come from, though, is yeah, how does
- 9:22he you know? Because he can punch his way through anything, but how
- 9:26you know that's not in his character to do. He's not just gonna fucking
- 9:30punch someone's head off and wins like he's got to win with out compromising his
- 9:35character. Yeah. One of my favorite stories of as of recent times with
- 9:39Superman was Son of Superman, where we get to see Clark Kent kind of
- 9:43be a dad, and that was one of the most interesting aspects I've ever
- 9:46seen a Superman ever, was just him being a dad, like not fighting
- 9:50a crazy alien, just like having a baseball cap and taking his son to
- 9:54the local county fair was like really sweet. And it sounds like he's been
- 9:58around for along that he can now be the backdrop for almost any storyline,
- 10:03and because he is kind of like a blank canvas of he's all powerful,
- 10:05Yeah, has all these powers. Yeah, you can write any Superman story
- 10:09right, Like it's I think so. And I think that's why they expanded
- 10:13the Superman family too, is like, right, how do we know the
- 10:16small town farm boy from Kansas? What are other aspects of Superman that can
- 10:22be explore personality wise? And that's where the Superfamily comes in. Yeah,
- 10:26yeah, do you mean with all that, John, Yeah, I mean
- 10:30that that's something that's that's been tough being a Superman fan in the age that
- 10:33I have been, you know, coming from the eighties and through the nineties
- 10:35and everything. Is that as much as I love the character, like he
- 10:39can get kind of stale, you know, and and there there's it is
- 10:43hard to write like you're not going to reinvent the characters of Clark Kenner Superman.
- 10:48So I'm glad that they finally took the step to to progress him further
- 10:54in life, you know, like you said, Jason, like giving him
- 10:56a family and having him take on the dad role, like it's it's something
- 11:00that hasn't been done and that is totally logical. To do. And you
- 11:05know, there's nobody alive now, I mean, well, hardly anybody alive
- 11:09now that knows a world where Superman didn't exist, right, So it's so
- 11:15it's it's it's sort of I think everybody's kind of ready for it. Yeah,
- 11:18we want a Zaddi. Yeah, okay, yeah, I'm pretty sure
- 11:24that is all of Superman's right, just becomes a z. There's that meme
- 11:31of like, what because Henry Cavill Superman, he's like on my world,
- 11:35the S stands for hope. It doesn't look like blah blah blah. Right,
- 11:39the S stands for daddy, daddy. Um, So let's well,
- 11:45let's see if we can turn Superman into a offbeat pop culture game show.
- 11:48Let's let's see if we can do that with Superman. Well, look,
- 11:50players, the planet Crypton is dying, and as they're loading a super Baby
- 11:54into an intergalactic car seat, I'd like our pez to come up with a
- 11:58Superman the team name please, so let speak him with Jason and Ben?
- 12:03Have you got a Superman themed offering? Ben, if you don't mind,
- 12:05I'm really bad at these. I'd like to just start off with all the
- 12:09bad stuff first We're gonna end up with what you ever, whatever you say.
- 12:15I know that for a fact. Some ideas I have is the S
- 12:20shields, but the STA means simp on my planet. Like that, I
- 12:22just did that joke. That's not as good the daily Planets. Uh,
- 12:28Shack's left shoulder tattoo, it's a it's a Superman John Henry Irons. I
- 12:37really just wanted to say that because I really love John Henry Iron as a
- 12:41character. He's steel also related to Shack. That's how my brain works.
- 12:45He's a great character because he's essentially black Superman in a world where Superman is
- 12:50synonymous with America and John Henry Irons is based on John Henry the tale of
- 12:58a man of a black man who I don't I don't think he's a slave,
- 13:03but definitely definitely close. And then he kills himself for labor of America
- 13:07and then he becomes Superman. Like that's that's I know, you one and
- 13:11fifty year old folks away to make him Superman. Anyways, what do you
- 13:16have? Yeah, well I what do you have? So one of my
- 13:20first I'll start with my bad idea first, h Like I wanted to do
- 13:24a play on unmixed Spitlick and I was thinking about, like, you know,
- 13:28doing it backwards. I wasn't sure, I'll say, And then then
- 13:28I thought about the quick fireal around and I'm like, there's no fucking way
- 13:33I want to be trying to say. But it's because backwards kill tips he's
- 13:37him yes kind of, yeah, but not if you spell it like It
- 13:41depends on like it was like, it depends on if you, like I
- 13:45do sound it out as it spelled backwards or do you just know that's what
- 13:48they did in the in the animated series and that's good enough? Yeah,
- 13:52yeah, that's enough. Yeah, because do you say in these things I'm
- 13:54aware of how do you say it? Again? It's bits I'm not gonna
- 14:01say because it might come up in a question later, but still whoops.
- 14:05But the only good one I could come up with was the Otisville Kryptonians.
- 14:09Okay, what is Otisville? Otis Burg was an otis Burg? Yeah,
- 14:20so yeah, what is otis Berg? Is it based on the otis character
- 14:24from the first film? Yes, otis Berg apparently. I'm still sticking with
- 14:26the Otisville Kryptonians. I don't give a shit. I'll be wrong. I
- 14:30like it. But yeah, basically, uh otis want you know, in
- 14:35Lex's big real Estates scheme, he wanted his own little ton. That's good.
- 14:39That's good. I like cut. So the otis Berg Kryptonians. Yeah,
- 14:43I mean the only good one I had was Daily Planets. It's not
- 14:48great, So I think this is a more specific yes, he culture reference.
- 14:52Sure, it sounds like a mascot. I like. Also the sounds
- 14:56like a baseball team to John. Um, so we're gonna keep it.
- 15:01Okay, So the vill otis Ville Crypotonian's lovely stuff and moving on over to
- 15:07Ultra and John, I'm assuming John's going to be the well of knowledge here
- 15:11for a team name. Yeah, I'll probably just skip my bad ideas.
- 15:18Sorry that man. Everyone's talking about their bad ideas, and it's like everyone
- 15:24has great ideas that all of a sudden I'm like, well, crap,
- 15:26I thought mine was okay, but now I'm I'm certain it's going to be
- 15:30a bad idea. Also, no, I refuse to have this negativity honestly.
- 15:35I mean, I thought of the eradicators because that's a Kryptonian artifact and
- 15:41that sounds kind of badass. But the one that I was that I was
- 15:43most excited about was the overpants. Controversial, Yeah, iconic, Yeah,
- 15:54controversial. Yeah. Well it's interesting because in in art, because John's an
- 16:00artist, uh right, the design of Superman over pants for a long time.
- 16:04New fifty two completely took the overpants. People didn't like it so much,
- 16:10paneling blah blah blah. Rebirth was a homage that the classics. He
- 16:14went back to the Raiko costs him no overpants. Then people were up in
- 16:18arms the overpants. We want the overpants, the yellow belt and the overpants.
- 16:22And I think now after so much time, he does have in fact
- 16:26the yellow belt and the overpants or not. Yeah, who knows. Maybe
- 16:27it took. He's got the trunks on there. And to be honest,
- 16:30like I'm a I'm a fanboy purist. But that costume they had from Rebirth,
- 16:36with that that red belt and that uh that yellow pentagon, I thought
- 16:41that was perfect. I thought they they updated it, but still super respected
- 16:45the old one. It felt right and kind of a bummer that they got
- 16:48rid of it. Mike, are you do you are you a big fan
- 16:51of We're geeking out? Let us do No? This goes against the whole
- 16:55philosophy. Um, the art by Jorge Menez too, is that the Is
- 17:02that the art that you're referring to as well? Oh yeah he was,
- 17:04he was in there. That's where that's where I really fell in love with
- 17:07his stuff. Oh my god, like the anime influence, but also the
- 17:11sketchy Oh god, like that suit was perfect. Oh, Matt, can
- 17:15you write down on your sheet for our scores if you could just write over
- 17:18pants? Yes? Yeah, if you just write that down, you happy
- 17:22to go with? Yeah, yeah, over pants? Yeah. Just I
- 17:26mean, it's too late to switch teams. It sounds like Jason and John
- 17:29really want to be on the same team. No, I'm just fine.
- 17:33Yeah, appropriate for Superman. You'd you just completely stomped, we'd be overpowered.
- 17:40Then we just call you Team Batman. I got a bigger laugh from
- 17:45Jason because it is a deeper reference to well, hey, look if you
- 17:51like me and you're thinking what the hell is going on here, and you're
- 17:55thinking something along the lines of, well, actually I don't know anything about
- 17:59Superman. Is the olden DCU has butchered the property, and so he hasn't
- 18:03remained as much din the zeitgeist as say Batman, don't worry his order with
- 18:07a little segment we like to call passing knowledge. Superman is a DC comic
- 18:15superhero first created by Jerry Siegel and Joe Schuster. He debuted in nineteen thirty
- 18:21eight. Just like your Grandma, but unlike your grandma, he has superhuman
- 18:26strength, the ability to fly, and X ray vision, although the last
- 18:30one would have helped with an earlier diagnosis, wouldn't it, oh, Grandma
- 18:34Jesus Chris? Is that how a work brain like yours get to kicks?
- 18:37Superman is really an alien named cal L and was sent to Earth as a
- 18:42baby to escape a dying planet. As a note for our reality, we
- 18:47cannot just shoot babies into space instead of addressing the environmental apocalypse. Looking at
- 18:53you, Elon, I was not saying the Fast Way has dropped the nuclear
- 18:59weapons over the poles. You're a super villain. Cal L crash landed on
- 19:04Earth and was raised by the Kents, making him Clark Kent, his mild
- 19:08mannered alter ego that looks exactly the same as him, but now he wears
- 19:12these like special glasses that make him look completely different to people he works around,
- 19:18but not the audience. What a superpower. In twenty twenty one,
- 19:26he stood for truth, justice and the American way. But how are you
- 19:30going to make money from the rest of the world with a slogan like that,
- 19:33So now he stands for truth, justice and a better tomorrow, which
- 19:37could be anywhere in the world except America. Probably you're gonna end up fighting
- 19:44every elect an official in this country. Over the last eighty five years,
- 19:48the comic books have become TV serials, movies, dramas, video games,
- 19:52Saturday Morning cartoons, and even NFTs remember them with a strong comics following a
- 20:00rebooted cinematic universe on the way and generational market penetration. Superman isn't going anywhere.
- 20:07You'd have to go back in time to nineteen thirty eight and uncreate him.
- 20:12And to do that you need to go back around the Earth one hundred
- 20:17and seventy nine trillion, yes, trillion times. Did you do the math
- 20:22on that you used to work that out in your head? Yeah, obviously
- 20:26I'm a scientist for non video viewers right now, Audre just like looked up
- 20:30into the sky and said that, like you did the calculations, because I
- 20:34did? Did you really? No, I'm saying it checks out. I
- 20:40mean, I didn't have anything wrong with that. No one can prove you
- 20:44wrong. Thank you, Audre. I hope that caught everyone up on Superman,
- 20:48and if not, this will still be a blast. So just before
- 20:52we get to the games, I've asked each player to bring in a muse
- 20:55that's something that inspires them or something they love from this particular fandom. Superman
- 21:00himself can be inspiring. He once said, you're much stronger than you think
- 21:04you are, But of course he'd say that he's got he's got super strength,
- 21:10Jason. I can very clearly see that lots of things inspire you from
- 21:14the world of Superman, but what specifically inspires you from the world muscles No.
- 21:18I have a specific story that I'd like to call it to attention,
- 21:22and it is very much inspiring me. It's a story called Superman Smashes the
- 21:26Clan, written by Jean lun Yang, one of my favorite combook writers of
- 21:30all time. I think long time listeners in the show I've name dropped him
- 21:33a couple of times. This particular story takes one of the earliest, like
- 21:37circa nineteen thirties forties stories of Superman. Ever and reimagines it as a story
- 21:45where Superman one fights the Ku Klux Klan. It's not specifically reference as the
- 21:49Kukuk clan. We know it's the Ku Kuk clan and it's fucking sick.
- 21:53Two, the protagonist that he follows are these two young Asian Americans who have
- 21:59just grated to America and are finding their way and navigating that world and landscape.
- 22:04And it's really amazing because again it calls into attention to the things that
- 22:07we've said that makes Superman great. It's not the fact that he punches the
- 22:11Cucoxan, which again it's fucking awesome. It's it's it's the fact that he
- 22:17is an immigrant. He's he's quite literally an alien our planet and to share
- 22:22and to inspire similarly, Immigrants of America is the American way. It's the
- 22:27American story. It's the great part about Superman. And that's awesome. And
- 22:32then just a quick shout out to one of our great great fans here Jp.
- 22:36He sent me over fan art ever we were doing this episode, and
- 22:41he made like a comic book of things. It will be on Twitter when
- 22:45this episode, well we'll share that and that's awesome, So thank you.
- 22:48Very much on that great muse, great piece of fan ut. Yeah,
- 22:52it's cool that we have that. Now, Okay, moving on over to
- 22:55your teammates, Ben, what's inspiring you from Superman? Mine is also a
- 23:00Superman story, lovely and it's uh, it's all star Superman by nice Grant
- 23:06Morrison with Frank Quietly on art is. It's it was like a send off
- 23:11to Superman because it was right before they did New fifty two, right or
- 23:15maybe a little earlier, they did a big reboot on Superman and basically gave
- 23:19him the opportunity to kill Superman in a way that was considerably more tasteful and
- 23:26interesting than the first time around. That is a great story, yeah,
- 23:32yeah, and it encapsulates for me, like everything that is Superman because he's
- 23:37you know, he you know, Lex Luthor sets him up and he's basically
- 23:41long on the short of it, he's dying and he knows he's dying,
- 23:44and so he's got to go around and kind of just prep things for the
- 23:48world to not have him anymore. And interesting premise, Yeah, yeah,
- 23:52and he handles it with all the the grace and supermanitude that you would hope
- 23:56he would. Yeah, And He's still into some fun high jinks there,
- 24:00you know. He goes to Bizarre World and and as like a date off
- 24:06with was it Samson and Alas? Yeah, and like like Lois Lane gets
- 24:15his powers for a day, Like it's just got this whole. It's like
- 24:17a bunch of little vignettes, but they all kind of fit together for the
- 24:21greater narrative of you know, the death of Superman state Yeah, kill him.
- 24:26Yeah, And it's it's like Grant Morrison's like love letter to the entire
- 24:30history of Superman. He pays respect and homage to everything without it being you
- 24:36know, just turbo obnoxiously cheesy, even though he's doing things from the sixties
- 24:41when it was that isn't there the panels of him saving cats from trees and
- 24:45stuff. Yeah, and like these bumbling Clark Kent Yeah, it's awesome and
- 24:49one of my favorite Lex luthors too. Yeah, in that book, barn
- 24:53One fantastic. I love that it seems to be the stories of Superman that
- 24:57seems to be inspiring for you one that's not often something I've found within the
- 25:03within the superhero genre, and most people seem to go it's cool that he
- 25:06does the thing. But yeah, the story is actually actually being important I
- 25:11found in my research and something that I'm finding here today. But let's move
- 25:14on OVA to the Ova Pens and we'll start with John. John, what's
- 25:17inspiring you from the world of Superman. Well, I'm sorry to break the
- 25:22chain here, but it's not a story there. There's too many stories.
- 25:26I mean, honestly, Ben's mus there is the best Superman story ever,
- 25:29and in my opinion, if I had to recommend one story, it would
- 25:32be that. But now I'm going with something that has inspired me outside of
- 25:37just viewing and reading and um, you know, like if if I'm having
- 25:41a little bit of writers or artist block, or I just need something to
- 25:45to get me going creatively, I throw on John Williams. Sorry, and
- 25:49it's I'm trying not to pander, you know, I'm sharing the name.
- 25:52But the soundtrack to Superman the movie, it is almost the entire length of
- 25:59the entire film, Like there's there's almost always music playing in that in that
- 26:03movie, and it goes everywhere. You've got the main Superman march, You've
- 26:07got the eerie Krypton music, You've got the the the all American you know,
- 26:15soft horns, of the Smallville stuff. Yes, I mean, it's
- 26:18just it is a gorgeous soundtrack and I can just I can just put it
- 26:22on. It's like the movies playing in my head because I know exactly where
- 26:26it is in the movie. I've seen that movie more times than than probably
- 26:30any other single movie and any respectable manh Yeah, that's that's fantastic. It's
- 26:40it's such a good soundtrack. I know. It's What I'm about to say
- 26:42is kind of redundant because John Williams went on to do the soundtrack for All
- 26:47of Cinema, but it was ahead of its time as a soundtrack in that
- 26:49it's one of those first soundtracks that you can put on the complete thing and
- 26:52be like, yeah, this is telling a story from start to finish.
- 26:56Like I know, John Williams reinvented that and and did that whole thing.
- 27:00But yeah, it's a fantastic soundtrack. Great mus Absolutely think it's I don't
- 27:06know a ton about Superman, but if you put on that soundtrack, I'd
- 27:08be like that Superman m hmm. Yeah. And sometimes Star Wars, Yeah,
- 27:12sometimes separate the two. It's the there's aliens, it's John Williams.
- 27:18It's all it's all very the same. Um okay, Ultra, if you
- 27:25if I can possibly trouble you from for a muse from the Superman world,
- 27:29oh my god, you could. I am being inspired today by the trope
- 27:37in film of the glasses have got to Go Okay. So basically, this
- 27:42is the trope in cinema that someone is a different person with and without their
- 27:48glasses. We have Clark Kent, we have Superman. This is one that
- 27:51we we It's a Superman episode, that's the one we've been talking about.
- 27:56But it is very prevalent in a lot of the films that I grew up
- 28:02with that were marketed to like young girls. So like the Princess Diaries,
- 28:07she takes off her glass, she straightens her hair, she is unrecognizable,
- 28:11she's all that um my big fat Greek wedding. Also like a key spot
- 28:17is out there given her contacts and now she's hot. Yeah, it is
- 28:21parodied in a lot of films this trope, and this is not the only
- 28:26instance in UM Superheroes as well. Um Peter Parker in one of the Spider
- 28:34Man films, his eyes get better and that's when the girl notices him.
- 28:40That's when Mary Jane is like, yeah, she even calls out his eye
- 28:42color. So the official trope is the glasses have got to go. That's
- 28:48yes, that's the name of it. Um. I think there's like a
- 28:51related one that because I don't think like pretty woman, I don't think she
- 28:55has glasses. Um, so there's a there's a related trope that is like,
- 29:00is that the same person like before and after a makeover? There's also
- 29:06um, now when she takes her eyeballs out, Yeah, the eyeballs have
- 29:11got to go. I'm sorry. Yeah. To its credit, though,
- 29:18I think as Superman does it best, I've always been blown away by Chris
- 29:22Reeves. Uh, Like it's not just the glasses in Superman one, like
- 29:26when he like there's a scene where he's gonna where he's gonna tell Lois that
- 29:30he's Superman and he takes the glasses off, and like you see him,
- 29:33like he straightens up and gets all confident and tall. Yeah yeah, and
- 29:36then like decides against it and like puts him back, like his performance,
- 29:38and it kind of sold me on the idea that he could sell himself as
- 29:42someone else because he's so it is he has like all different personality and his
- 29:48his moteway moves and the way he stands in his voice all changes that could
- 29:52have been my mus geez if I had thought about that. Wow, you
- 29:56know, to touch back on All Stars Superman, like, if you look
- 29:59at that, you will bel leave that that that that Clark Kent in That
- 30:03is not Superman. Oh yeah, because he's like a burly like hunched over
- 30:07guys and yeah, his clothes are all bagging and his hairs disheveled and he's
- 30:11yeah, you know, it's like a dope. Yes, definitely, there's
- 30:15no way he's Superman. Yeah. No. People have done studies about this
- 30:19too, where Henry Cavill they use this as a prime example because he is
- 30:23in fact Superman. But one time he just wore regular clothes, wore a
- 30:26Superman T shirt in the middle of Time Square with a billboard with his fucking
- 30:32face on it. That's Superman. Yeah, and no one came up to
- 30:33him. Wow, So there's there's absolutely precedence. It was this idea.
- 30:38Yeah, I've worn contact a couple of times at work. People had no
- 30:45idea who I was. They walked right past me or said, oh hey,
- 30:52oh wait is atra did anyone did anyone hit on you? Because apparently
- 30:56that that's essentially you gain like five numbers on the scale. Wild shit.
- 31:04Alright these things for audio listeners. John just removed his glasses. My glasses
- 31:15are staying off. I'm driving home like this. Yeah, the Outfit will
- 31:21protect you. Yeah, that's fantastic music, Aldra, I feel just as
- 31:26inspired by it because you thought about it and you you've researched the tropes and
- 31:30that's fantastic. Yeah. Yes, I love this. I genuinely I've learned
- 31:34everything I know about Superman in the last two weeks. I watched the first
- 31:37Superman movie for the first time this week. It's great. The pace is
- 31:42slow. I feel like Marvel should take a lesson from that. Like,
- 31:45it's just so much better. You can actually learn about the characters and pay
- 31:48attention to what's happening. It's fantastic anyway. That's me gushing over you guys,
- 31:52gushing. Let's play some games, right, teams, Let's head on
- 31:59over to the Daily Planet to collect our first assignments. It's round one.
- 32:09Round one is called Rogues Gallery. In turn, I will offer our teams
- 32:13a lineup of villains. One of them will be a real enemy of Superman.
- 32:19One will be from that pesky other universe Marvels, and the other will
- 32:25be a fabricated name for this very game show at gate Leap, as original
- 32:30as it happens. It's up to our teams to discuss and decide which faux
- 32:34Superman really fought and if you can describe the real villain as well, I'll
- 32:38give you a bonus point if you can describe enough about them. I'm just
- 32:44feeling generous today, that's all. So we will begin with the Otisville Kryptonians,
- 32:51the otis Ville Cryptonian so much more now. So here is your first
- 33:00rogues gallery. Lois London, Manchester Black, and Steve Milton Keynes. Fuck
- 33:07I think Manchester Black is a Marvel villain. Ben, Yeah, I've got
- 33:12nothing on any of these. What was the last one? Sorry? Uh?
- 33:16Steve Milton Keynes, I have no idea who that is? Uh?
- 33:21Lois London? I think is made up only because God he has another interest,
- 33:30love interest who grew up with him in Smallville Launa? Is it Lawanna
- 33:38Lane? I'm trying to look at John's face turning all the way around.
- 33:46Uh yeah, yeah, I don't. I mean it seems a bit alliterative.
- 33:52Uh, that's right, which is the classic thing that Matt would do,
- 33:54because he knows Marvel does that. Yeah. Yeah, stan Lee's never
- 33:59done anything that wasn't all. Yeah, And I feel like that one's made
- 34:00up. So I'm inching towards the last one only because I do. I
- 34:05have heard of Manchester Black, and I swear he's Marvel, but he also
- 34:09could be freaking DC. Dude, he's a guy. I know that Manchester
- 34:15is real. I'm gonna go with your gut on this one. You're the
- 34:16one where in the god all right, Matt reveal the answer is Manchester Black,
- 34:23Marvel or DC. You the last one. It's the last one.
- 34:29OK, that's what we're saying. Oh you'll say it, last one.
- 34:30You're saying it's Steve milton Kens. Yeah, all of our British listeners are
- 34:36having a good chuckle. Steve milton Keyes is not the correct answer. That's
- 34:39the one I made up. Damn it. Just Milton Keynes is a random
- 34:43town. The correct answer is Manchester Black. Fuck is a DC villain who
- 34:49fought Superman. You've still got a chance at a bonus point, if you
- 34:51want to tell me about Manchester Black, If you can any ideas Ben I
- 34:57was about to start talking. I'm glad I didn't to be fair. Manchester
- 35:01Black also sounds like some British cities. Yeah, they all do. Oh
- 35:07yeah, that's yeah, that's damn it. Um let's uh. He's like,
- 35:17I mean, Jason, you seem to know something like do you know
- 35:21anything deeper than the name from okay, from memory? He's a general superpower
- 35:25being uh in the fact that and this is not going to help, but
- 35:29he has general super speed, super strength, blah blah blah blah blah,
- 35:32flight, he might have a power that's associated with sapping, slash stealing powers.
- 35:40Marie, look at fucking John's face on one all right one, listeners,
- 35:45I get really riled up and really serious about comic book based ones.
- 35:50The fact that John which is which goes against the entire premise of but this
- 35:54is a return curring gag as well, is that it happens every single time.
- 36:00But also I get competitive and I lose a lot, and it doesn't
- 36:02help that John fucking knows theason. I'm crying inside, right, I don't
- 36:07think you've hit on the things that I was looking for about Manchester Black.
- 36:10So no bone is point that I've got that he's the leader of the elites.
- 36:14That's the key thing I was looking for, and is a powerfully skilled
- 36:16telepath. That's the that's the main thing about Manchester Black. So I'm sorry
- 36:22he first showed up. And I think it's Action seven seventy five. It's
- 36:27a legend. It's a legendary story, like if you're looking for a way
- 36:31like somebody proving that Superman is relevant in modern times, like it's it's well
- 36:36known for that it was written by never Mind. But yes, yeah,
- 36:43yeah, if I didn't mess this up so bad, i'd be super impressed
- 36:46by you. And it's very happy. But I'll see your son of a
- 36:50bit. No, it's funny that you messed it up. Okay, let's
- 36:52let's test John's knowledge. Let's let's offer rogues. Yeah now, now I'm
- 36:55gonna suck this one up here. Yeah better, Oh god, I hope.
- 36:59So, hey we go for the overpens. Here are your three names.
- 37:02Ultra Humanite, UltraMantis, Black, Captain, Ultra Okay um, I
- 37:09know for a fact, Audra that Ultra Humanite is DC amazing. That's where
- 37:15we'll go with. That's what I'm gonna lock in that is the correct answer.
- 37:22Yeah, it is. Captain Ultra is from Marvel and Ultramantius Black is
- 37:25fake but also an independent professional wrestler. Saw a point for the over pens.
- 37:32But John, can you tell can you tell me more about Ultra Humanite?
- 37:37Why are you asking him and not? Audra is massively unfair as the
- 37:42Ultra Can you tell me all about Ultra Humanite? So Ultramantius Black is No,
- 37:50I've gotten nothing back to you, John Um the ultra Humanite, I
- 37:54mean, geez, he was a Justice Society villain, but he he's He's
- 38:00also got mental powers. He's also put his brain into different bodies over time,
- 38:06including like a fat bald man and a giant white gorilla with a huge
- 38:12brain. That isn't That isn't I've heard enough. That's in it for a
- 38:16bonus point. That's what I've got here. That is ultra Humanite. Good
- 38:19stuff. Look, superhero comics, Jason, they're all about redemption. So
- 38:23let's let's give you. This is part of the hero's journey. Man.
- 38:29We got a fail. One question name, Good job, John Long quiz
- 38:37Long quis indeed? Okay, here we go. Sorry, here are your
- 38:42next three names. Emerald Banshee, Silver Banshee or Banshee Jason, are you
- 38:51gonna suck this up again? Banshee is a Marvel character unless his name is
- 38:57fucking Siren. Do you agree with that? Ben there, I'm nearly certain
- 39:00there is a Marvel character named Banshee, but that's generic enough to swing both
- 39:05ways, right, Um, If I were to this is not part of
- 39:07the game. Banshee is an X man, he died, he's Irish.
- 39:12Uh So that leaves Silver Banshee. You said, yes, Emerald Banshee and
- 39:17Silva Banshee Silver Banshee because I think I saw her in a cartoon one time.
- 39:25Maybe let's do it, unless, okay with with Silva Banshie you trusting
- 39:30me on this? Do you have any MP's No, I'm of the same
- 39:34mind that Silver sounds like the right. Silva Banshee is indeed the real Superman
- 39:38villain. And for a bonus point, do you remember anything from that cartoon?
- 39:43She screamed? She screams. She maybe maybe she's a ghost, but
- 39:45she screamed, because that's what Banshees do, right, right man? Good?
- 39:49Yes? Yeah, I mean yeah, that's generally Banshee. Does she
- 39:52do? I get extra points that I got the ex gender right. Yeah,
- 39:55it's a it's a lady that screams, and uh, she's got silver
- 40:00hair. Yeah, there's there's three key things I've got down here if you
- 40:05can, if you can give me one of them, then I'll give you
- 40:07a bonus point. She cheats on her texts. She oh, yeah,
- 40:15that's for Superman. And uh. The third one is of course that she
- 40:22likes poker so close, so close. So no bonus point that I was
- 40:28looking for. I would have taken skull face paints because that's kind of the
- 40:30identifying feature as she's got superhuman strength and also resistance to injury. She cannot
- 40:37be cannot be harmed. She don't scream, that's she made. That's not
- 40:42one of the Keith Oh she does. That's John's confirming that it wasn't one
- 40:45of the main things that was at the top of the the Wikipedia. I
- 40:50guess instead of cheating on Texas, I should have gone with generic superhero powers.
- 40:53Yeah, yeah, this is Superman. Yes, so that was you
- 41:00have the gender right and everything. Okay, let's have another lineup of villains
- 41:04for the overpens. Mister Mitzel plick you son him a bitch, Doctor Tucks
- 41:08a Lottle or the Impossible Man. Do you do you do you have any
- 41:15any guesses? Adre No. I was here at the beginning of the episode,
- 41:21and I'm still here and I am playing well. The Impossible Man's Marvel,
- 41:28the middle One's made up, and mister Mix is bit like his Superman.
- 41:31There we go, There we Go. That is definitely gonna be a
- 41:34point. Can you describe him, John, there we go? He's a
- 41:37and an imp from the fifth dimension who has reality altering powers that basically are
- 41:45like magic. That is the first sentence you said. That is almost exactly
- 41:49what I happen in. He even got the dimension number right, Yeah,
- 41:52damn you perfect? Perfect? Where are softballs? Sorry? Okay, Ultra
- 41:58Humani isn't like almost every card too of Justice League Unlimited? What is going
- 42:01on? I'm so sorry. Manchester, Black and Silver Banshee have appeared in
- 42:07every single TV version of Superman's in the last twenty years. I didn't watch
- 42:12small Ville, Okay, so sucked. I watched small Ville and it sucked.
- 42:17Right, Yeah, sounds good. Never, that's flew once and he's
- 42:23Superman. That's a gap in my knowledge. So so hopefully there's a there's
- 42:28a small Ville question. You can give him a small Ville question. Well,
- 42:31it's your it's your question next, Jason, Oh, the Otisville Kryptonians.
- 42:38Here are your three names? Give you let's give you three puns.
- 42:43Oh, you've got Braykin Proxima Midnight or a Moss Fortune, a mass fortune
- 42:52as fortune? What are your thoughts? Ben Proxima Midnight sounds familiar. It's
- 42:57from Marvel, but I think it's a Marvel character her. Yeah, she's
- 43:00one of the Black Order for Thanos. So yeah, yeah, yeah,
- 43:04yeah, exactly, that's what That's what I was thinking there. You know
- 43:07that, shut up, shut up, hold on, hold on. We
- 43:10got a fifty fifty fall could be the real answer next time too. Yeah,
- 43:17you might as well, said iron Man. All right, so we
- 43:20had Amos Fortune and bray Ken, Yes, I mean those are both good,
- 43:25No idea, it's fifty fifty. I've steered us wrong so far.
- 43:30I'm gonna go with Amos Fortune, all right, Okay, go with Amos
- 43:34Fortune. Yes, that is the real Superman villain bad. Definitely a point
- 43:39there. Can you describe Amos Faultune? Uh? Yeah, he's really taxes
- 43:50strong he's uh, yeah, they're villains. None of them are paying taxes
- 43:55and they're ill gotten gains. Um, let's say he wears a hat.
- 44:00Maybe, um again, does he maybe? Maybe he has like powers that
- 44:07make you have bad luck. I'm gonna take it. I'm actually gonna take
- 44:10it as one of the things that he's obsessed with luck, the concept of
- 44:14luck. So and does he have a hat? John? Does he also
- 44:16wear I honestly don't know the character, like I recognize the name, but
- 44:21for some reason, it does feel right that he's got a hat. Yeah,
- 44:24it feels like when Ben said that, I was like, good call.
- 44:29I don't think someone named Amos is allowed to not wear Yeah, yeah,
- 44:32it sounds like it. It's just sound like I'm really loving this.
- 44:37Also ahead of the Royal Flush Gang just a few o. The Royal Flush
- 44:40Gang is also an alternating gang. Okay, so that doesn't give us a
- 44:45lot. All right, Well you got the bonus point and yeah it's a
- 44:46good Let's have another lineup the Overpence Metal Leak Misstik or plastic my gut my
- 44:58heart says plastic because Grand Metal Leak is a professional wrestler. Yeah, mystique
- 45:06is definitely an X Man. Yeah, yeah, Ultra. You got a
- 45:09point in the Superman episode. Wow stuff that was good and Ultra, would
- 45:19you like to take a take a step at the who they might be,
- 45:22what they might do. God, I've waited too long now I do need
- 45:25to have an answer. Um, you can consult your teammates. Yeah,
- 45:30that sounds like a great idea. I'm I'm a little I'm a little rusty,
- 45:36but I know she's a female character that that explodes things, whether it's
- 45:42with her own power or the ability to make explosive or you know, like
- 45:45like actual physical explosives. I don't remember what, but that's that's what I've
- 45:50got here, like plastic explosives. Yeah, yep, killing it. Good
- 45:55stuff. Oh my god, way to downplay that deep pull there. It
- 46:00just like I don't know, I mean a little rusty, but I know
- 46:02exactly. I mean, if you ask me, like one story she's been
- 46:07a part of, I don't know, So that'sn't part of the question.
- 46:12She's just she's she's around. I love her. Whatever. Okay, I've
- 46:15got one last pass of villains for each pair. These ones are a little
- 46:20more dastardly as I'm removing the Marvel aspect, it's just going to be two
- 46:23made up names and one real Superman villain. So here we go for the
- 46:29otis Fille Kryptonians. Whisper a Dare, sing a song or tell me O
- 46:36tale something. Whisper Dare? Yeah right, yeah, that that struck me.
- 46:44I like it more than the others. We like it. You like
- 46:46whisper a day? Yeah you don't want to sing a song or tell me
- 46:50O tale? No? No, okay, yeah you spot on it is
- 46:52it is Superman is Whisper a Day is Superman's villain? But can you tell
- 46:58me anything more about them? See? It sounds like a lady's name.
- 47:05Maybe, of course we didn't get any points for a soft spoken woman,
- 47:12soft spoken but daring vicious works in the experimental accounting office for all the tax
- 47:28fraud. I don't know. Maybe she maybe she's able to like uh like
- 47:34con like convince people of things like you, like mind control, or like,
- 47:37yeah, whisper something in the air and then they can whisper sweet.
- 47:40Nothing crime with that. You'd think, wouldn't you. You'd think with a
- 47:45name like that, that's that's what it would be. But no, what
- 47:47I have here is this. None of your key points a soft spoken woman.
- 47:51No, no, none of them. I'm not even she it's female
- 47:53character. I'll be um secondary leader of the Into gang and an immortal ape
- 48:00shifter is on the fandom wiki there pretty much. Nope, good I would
- 48:07I would have guessed the name, but nope. Okay, so let's have
- 48:13one last rogues gallery for the overpants. Here we go, doctor now t
- 48:21O Morrow or test Thursday, Test Thursday, Thursday Thursday, Doctor now t
- 48:35omorrow or test Thursday. It's it's t Morrow. Okay, let's go with
- 48:40it to play coy bend, you know, John, John, Sorry,
- 48:47and all my glasses on. This is a mistake. It is indeed t
- 48:55O Morrow. And John, do you also have some some knowledge to follow?
- 49:00You do? Don't even lie? Yeah, he's a he's a scientist
- 49:02that that builds evil robots. He I think he might have built a mazo
- 49:07and a member of the Jackson five. Yep. That's uh, that's that's
- 49:15good enough. I also had that he created specifically Red Tornado as well,
- 49:20but I mean you said definitely said enough um from that, and I don't
- 49:24even know who Red Tornado is. That's just information from Wikipedia. But everybody
- 49:28else whould ah yeah, okay, I've played a lot is also playing.
- 49:36That is the end of round one. Let's ask Lois Lane to type up
- 49:39the latest scores. That's pretty disrespectful. Actually, she's really quite an accomplished
- 49:44journalist, and I'm asking her to do basic typist duties. However, baded
- 49:47spelling in the first movie. Yes, yes, yes, always always asking
- 49:53people those those lines are so good, Marvel. That's how you do quips.
- 49:58Okay, that's how equips. Okay, those scores are The otis filled.
- 50:04Kryptonians are on four points, but the Overpants are well in the lead
- 50:07with eight points. Oh twice. It's well deserved. Okay. Up next
- 50:15is round two. But first we've got to cut to some pesky commercials.
- 50:19But then another exciting episode in the Adventures of Superman presented by gate Leapers.
- 50:32Round two is called fan Court. It's the game where I'll ask our teams
- 50:37to play the role of pop culture defense lawyers to defend some controversial Superman super
- 50:43fan takes. No matter how they themselves feel about the statement, they must
- 50:47defend it. And a huge thank you to JP, who Jason shouted out
- 50:52at j Pantaloon's on Twitter for helping me out with some of these controversial takes.
- 50:57Thanks man. The others are popular slash unpopular opinions from Reddit. So
- 51:01there we go. Um, so work as a duo to deliver your arguments.
- 51:06Points will be awarded for fandom accuracy, knowledge, convincing points, and
- 51:10for acting like you're a hot shot lawyer from the big city. See.
- 51:15I'll give each team around two minutes to defend their statement. It will be
- 51:19new statements each time, so there's no like team versus team kind of thing.
- 51:22This time. It's just defend that statement for two minutes and I'll give
- 51:25you some points. Are we ready? Yeah? Okay, So we will
- 51:31begin with the otis Fille Kryptonians and this this first statement is to do with
- 51:36the Superman movies. And your statement is Superman four, The Quest for Peace
- 51:43is really quite a good Superman film. I'm glad you don't hold on any
- 51:52contexts, any context Remind me Superman four is the one where he stops a
- 51:57nuclear exist the nuclear weapons. Yeah, it's got a nuclear or what's his
- 52:01name? He has nuclear man? Right? Yeah, it's nuclear. Really,
- 52:07this is not the one where he fights himself. Right, that's three
- 52:10Okay, got it? Ben? Do you want to lead this one?
- 52:14Do you want to take it away? And then Jason can pick up wherever.
- 52:16Sure, let's let's start some jurion. Ladies and gentlemen of the jury.
- 52:22You've heard, you've heard our case over the last few weeks. It's
- 52:25been it's been harrowing. No time, like the president, has nuclear war
- 52:31been more important. I mean, we we're at the highest nuclear threat that
- 52:37we've been since the nuclear or since the Cuban missile crisis. We've got a
- 52:40madman in Russia with his finger on the button, and uh, unfortunately we
- 52:45don't have Superman to save us. But we get head to the uh well
- 52:50not the theater, but like our living rooms and watch Superman, Uh,
- 52:55you know, defeat nuclear war. And you know it's aspirational, it's important,
- 53:04and a nuclear man was a very unique and interesting character. Oh,
- 53:12you're convincing that you're, ladies and gentlemen of the court. I think something
- 53:16that we need to look at when looking at any legal situation is precedent,
- 53:22and something that is precedented is the idea that one bringing up current events,
- 53:30uh certainly looks at and timeless events as well, looks at our world outside
- 53:37of us. Something we cannot fathom, something that we cannot really look at
- 53:43in our real world, is the idea that a singular man punches a nuclear
- 53:50explosion metaphorically, you know. But that's the beauty of film, is that
- 53:54we can see something that is disastrous or is even kind of a concept,
- 54:00something that that Superman has on precedence done. Superman is a character who can
- 54:06who can wrestle a tornado. He's someone who can reverse of flood by just
- 54:10punching it with sheer will. And this is a man. All those things
- 54:14happen in Superman. Fill not not Superman. This is precedence, precedents.
- 54:19Okay, please, you've interrupted me, jury, What the hell is that?
- 54:23Have five more seconds then? Okay? Uh, we want to look
- 54:27at the fantasy of things, right, Okay, yeah, okay, okay,
- 54:30So the statement was super Superman full. The Quest for Piece is really
- 54:35quite a good Superman film. I heard great context. You contextualized our times,
- 54:38the era we're in, Ben, and then Jason, you've looked at
- 54:42precedent and the aspirational aspect of defeating nuclear weapons. So I'm gonna give you
- 54:46some points because you at least made it relevant. Yeah, so I'm gonna
- 54:50be three points, all right, but it is out of one hundred,
- 54:52So three points out of five, you did good, You did good,
- 54:57all right. Let's say I don't care how many it's out of. That's
- 55:00still three points for us, Lovely Steph love As long as they get fewer,
- 55:07Well, let's find out. Because I have another statement about the Superman
- 55:10movies here. Superman shouldn't have turned back time to save Lois Lane in Superman
- 55:16one. That's the statement I've got in front of me. I've seen lots
- 55:21of fans argue about that online. I'd now like to hear that statement defended
- 55:24when I have a small point that I can do. Yeah, Joy,
- 55:31ladies and gentlemen of the jury. In these times, more than ever,
- 55:37we need to see evidence of men experiencing big feelings and then processing them and
- 55:44moving on without allowing those feelings to cause them to do something rash. And
- 55:51I think that that could have Superman could have had a really good like had
- 55:54a really good opportunity to do that in this situation. Um, I think
- 56:00that we could have saved a lot of a lot of heartache in the world.
- 56:05If we had more representation of like male emotional processing, and I think
- 56:10Superman, that's the real superpower is to be able to stare your emotions and
- 56:19stare him in the eyes, accept them, understand that that does not make
- 56:23you weak, and then move forward. You cannot you cannot be brave if
- 56:29you are not fearful. Oh you've brought this judge to teas. That's why
- 56:35I think he should have let Lane die. Thoughts John, Yeah, Yeah,
- 56:45I totally. I totally interpreted that backwards. So all of a sudden,
- 56:49I have to reformulate my thoughts um to be honest, you know,
- 56:53I agree, I agree with everything there. And also Luna Lange was a
- 56:58lot nicer than than Lois was, so maybe maybe maybe he should have ended
- 57:04up with her anyway instead of Lois. You can't mess with the future.
- 57:07Come on. Yeah, By not processing and allowing life to move on,
- 57:13he prevented something else good in his life. Yeah, yeah, No,
- 57:16it's true. It's actually very similar to a lot of a lot of the
- 57:20arguments I saw online. You done, you give them a time, this
- 57:28objection objection to speed at which Utra talks at. I can get down to
- 57:36a much smaller pace compared toitive rate that you talk at jas just a dumb
- 57:42talk. I say, I say good things, but it just takes them
- 57:45a long time. Hey, I think I also said significantly less than anyone
- 57:51else. Yeah, yeah, absolutely, absolutely, you've got more words in
- 57:55and if we're counting the words, um then and also i've you know what,
- 58:00I was going to actually score them three points for that, but you've
- 58:04been a bit cheeky. What do you mean being fair? I just got
- 58:08four point what chy? Two years? If this was this game has no
- 58:14friends calling you out, you'd be like, oh, that's funny. I'd
- 58:19like to petition for a change of venue. Okay, let's let's take this
- 58:24outside. We'll set will now be outside. Would you care to step outside?
- 58:35No? I only I give him three points three points for that one
- 58:37three points apiece on either side. I don't know why, but everyone on
- 58:42reddit is really mad about that, Like everyone on Reddit is like the whole
- 58:46Superman franchise is ruined because he flew backwards and saved Lowis Lane. And it's
- 58:52like, but if he can do that, why doesn't he do that every
- 58:54time? For every show? Love? I was more upset about the physics
- 59:00of the whole thing. Yes, I was like, this is not a
- 59:05like I mean, the guy flying in the freeze breath and the laser eyes.
- 59:08I get it, But come on, guys, I honestly thought that
- 59:15was gonna be the fan core question was like, explain the physics of right
- 59:19time and how that works making the Earth rotate backwards. Now he sent himself
- 59:24back in time and we're just watching him go back in time. He didn't
- 59:28spend the world. There we go, the actual explanation. Sure. He
- 59:34move on to two more statements, this time about the world of Superman comics.
- 59:38Oh okay, so the first one for the Otisville Kryptonians. Here's your
- 59:44statements. Superman is a more realistic and grounded character than Batman as long as
- 59:51you accept the aliens exist. Yes, absolutely, Oh that'll be easy for
- 59:55you to defend though. I agree. Damn, I thought you just made
- 1:00:00our argument for us. I thought we were done. Yeah, it's all
- 1:00:07time now if you want to, okay, are restarting. Okay, So
- 1:00:10the idea that that a Kryptonian exists is already within a fictional world of aliens,
- 1:00:15And so if you want to talk about aliens and how like the physics
- 1:00:20of biology work. We have to imagine a world that does not currently exist
- 1:00:23within our biology, and so we have to suspend disbelief on That's how he
- 1:00:27works. However, Batman is a real human being with zero metaphysical abilities.
- 1:00:32It's just a man. We have evidence of men and women who are alive
- 1:00:38now and their physical peak abilities. Someone like Batman existing in real life would
- 1:00:44be nothing but just bones sitting inside of meat best someone. Some would say
- 1:00:49that's more realistic and grounded, though, Yeah, if Batman, what do
- 1:00:52you say, if you were budding in the middle of argument what the fuck
- 1:00:55is going on? Then go what the fuck is going on about the bunch
- 1:01:00the judge? I mean, I mean with I'm with Jason on this one.
- 1:01:02I mean, like, yeah, it would be more realistic if Batman
- 1:01:06stayed crippled after Bain broke his back, like he's he's a normal guy.
- 1:01:12You know. So someone comes in like this guy he's been hit by cars,
- 1:01:15dropped from buildings, had his back broken, Like there is no fricking
- 1:01:19way this guy could keep going, Like you know, you look at NFL
- 1:01:22players who are thirty five and they can barely move, and this guy's been
- 1:01:25taken hits for long before that alien physiology. If you accept that aliens exist,
- 1:01:31you're pretty much taken the the the brakes off the train here, like
- 1:01:36they could do just about anything, and you can justify nearly anything. Also,
- 1:01:40the idea that a super smart, super fit billionaire is going to go
- 1:01:45around helping people is fucking ridiculous. Yeah is that time? Yep, that's
- 1:01:52about time? Okay, I thank you. I appreciate that noted. Yeah,
- 1:02:02good, good, strong arguments there. I think Ben got in just
- 1:02:07under the wire the key the key point there for you. Why well,
- 1:02:12why Batman isn't so much of a realistic and grounded character? Yeah? Um,
- 1:02:17some references that made me think, actually, no, Batman is more
- 1:02:20of a realistic and grounded character in the way that you were describing it.
- 1:02:22But overall pretty good four points, four points, Thank you, Thank you
- 1:02:27well deserved. Okay, final statements for the overpens. The death of Superman
- 1:02:32was just a marketing ploy to sell comics with special covers, And we are
- 1:02:37defending that statement, and you are defending that stated. I think that's just
- 1:02:42accurate. Yeah, just like yes, you part um, so that is
- 1:02:50absolutely a true statement. Like the writers would get together for summits and even
- 1:02:54say like okay, who's got ideas? And somebody who in the back would
- 1:02:58always say let's just kill them, or like let's just have Superman Low's get
- 1:03:01married. One time they actually decided to do it. They created a character
- 1:03:06that was devoid of any actual personality or any sort of character in himself and
- 1:03:15decided to punch Superman to death in or and And it was all a gimmick.
- 1:03:20You know, they had it all planned out. They each issue had
- 1:03:22one less panel per page to where the last one was all splash pages,
- 1:03:27which is basically all covers. They released it in, you know, four
- 1:03:31different printings. There was a poly bagged edition with stickers and arm bands and
- 1:03:37newspapers, there was a platinum edition, and thirty years later, this past
- 1:03:40November, I believe they did it all again, except they released it in
- 1:03:45more and more variant covers. We see this type of thing in a lot
- 1:03:50of different industries, So making this argument isn't isn't wild. Pro wrestling ratings
- 1:03:55are low. Have a wedding, ratings are low. The Taker comes back.
- 1:04:00You have a big you have a big gimmick thing, and it's talking.
- 1:04:03We're talking about Lana's wedding for three freaking weeks and people watched it.
- 1:04:09So if you add a gimmick, something big happening that's supposed to shake the
- 1:04:14whatever foundations of it and start everything anew, you're gonna make money. This
- 1:04:18is transcends comic books, and that's your time adding a cherry on top of
- 1:04:25already good fandom knowledge there from John. Yeah, I'm gonna give the full
- 1:04:29five points for that because it educated me fully on the situation. That argument
- 1:04:33should have totally been backwards, that it was not a cash strap and that
- 1:04:39it actually contained a deep and meaningful story. Oh, I would have talked
- 1:04:44about the importance the symbolism of Superman actually getting punched to death. Honestly,
- 1:04:49the mullet that they gave Superman was something that was really brave in terms of
- 1:04:55But the cherry on top was the chest hair, the idea that Superman was
- 1:05:00not flawless, He's just like you and me. No chest here. Okay,
- 1:05:09that is on that statement, that is the end of the rounds.
- 1:05:12Let's see if Darrell's big old floating head has calculated the latest scores, he
- 1:05:17has good head, and those scores are the Overpens are on sixteen points.
- 1:05:24Jesus Fucking crist The Otisville Kryptonians are a little behind on twelve points. All
- 1:05:28right, we broke ten. We could do this. Yeah, but still
- 1:05:32still two rounds to go. Anything could happen. Yeah, Okay, it's
- 1:05:36time for some ads now. Lex Corp Demands we play them, but for
- 1:05:41legal reasons, our partner company does not demand. They suggest see you in
- 1:05:45ninety seconds. Round three is called expanded universe. Superman is a media property
- 1:05:58that has spanned many different comics series and also TV shows streaming series ord recovered
- 1:06:02it. But if I described a version of Superman mostly from the comics,
- 1:06:09will our superfans be able to name the series that version of Superman belongs to?
- 1:06:14Fuck? Like that? Scary? I'm setting myself up for disappointment.
- 1:06:29And there's a bit of a gate leaper's twist in that each description was written
- 1:06:32by one of those snarky listical writing BuzzFeed interns. Like I know, I'm
- 1:06:38also snarky. That's how I was able to write them, But I've never
- 1:06:42written for BuzzFeed, so I can also say that previous thing yea devoid of
- 1:06:45creativity, though, thank you Ben, so you got a leg up.
- 1:06:50I hope at the very least this show proves that it doesn't doesn't prove much
- 1:06:55else. But there we go. We will begin with the otospill Kryptonians.
- 1:07:00Here is your first description. This story saw Superman land in Soviet Russia in
- 1:07:06the nineteen thirties instead of Kansas, where he was raised to be a communist
- 1:07:11and got the attention of Stalin Red Sun. There it is, right,
- 1:07:16Son, just simple as yep, yep, it absolutely is red Sun.
- 1:07:20That's a point. Thank you for that softball. You realize how it goes
- 1:07:25both ways. Now, well, no, I still can argue that,
- 1:07:29but I appreciate it. I argue last time, the last episode any fund
- 1:07:34memories of Superman, red Son, do you enjoy the communist aspects of it?
- 1:07:39It's great. I love that book, Like it's a cool, fun
- 1:07:42take on Superman. I like Batman's kind of like the counter revolutionary or I
- 1:07:45guess not counter revolutionary kind of yeah force in that book. It's yeah,
- 1:07:50it was a fun elseworld. Yeah. I like that Batman has a Russian
- 1:07:55hat but it's got ears on it. I also like that it's it's another
- 1:07:58Superman turned evil. More specifically, it's because he wasn't raised by the Kents
- 1:08:02that he became evil, so that right, yeah, he didn't get the
- 1:08:04values that set him up to be the Superman we know. And yeah,
- 1:08:09and it was an else Worlds that told a story and then was done,
- 1:08:12which I like, like, well, yeah, rather than carrying on forever
- 1:08:15and ever and ever. And I love that that he was still idealistic about
- 1:08:18the things he was. He was right like, he was still Superman,
- 1:08:21he was just raised with a different perspective, a different ideal Yeah. Yeah,
- 1:08:27interesting stuff. It honestly, out of all of the Superman ones,
- 1:08:30that would be the one I'd read based on the description, I was like,
- 1:08:32yeah you should. It's great right up my street. Okay, moving
- 1:08:38on over to the Overpants. Here is your description. Taking place in the
- 1:08:42far future with a weakened and grizzled Superman. This story sees the aged Man
- 1:08:47of Steel battle against clones of Hitler, Rocca, Santa Beard and use a
- 1:08:53massive gun. Oh my goodness, I've got the image in my head.
- 1:08:57That gun is like more ridiculous than any image gun ever. It's got like
- 1:09:01a thousand barrels on it. Um did you say image gun too. That's
- 1:09:06fucking hilarious. That's a stream yep, yep, I've I've got, I've
- 1:09:15got a It's just a shot in the dark. So do you got anything,
- 1:09:17Adre? No. I was gonna try to be like, can you
- 1:09:20think of an era or like try to like help. Oh see, I've
- 1:09:26I've I've got, I've got the comic in my head. I just I'm
- 1:09:30for some reason, I just can't pull it. I'm gonna I'm gonna guess
- 1:09:34Superman at World's End. Oh, you've left me in a tricky position.
- 1:09:40Job is it? I'm gonna I'm gonna force it to a democracy of of
- 1:09:45do we think we should give John the point? It's that Earth's end,
- 1:09:50Superman Earth's End, which is pretty much the world like that, not for
- 1:09:57an alien? What do we think should we make the game more spicy and
- 1:10:04not give the point? Here's the only thing. Here's I would not give
- 1:10:08the point if there's a comic called out at World's end that you were thinking
- 1:10:13of. No, no, no, yeah, yeah, in my head.
- 1:10:21I reckon. Even I'm kind of like Ben Ben was really funny,
- 1:10:26but even I'm kind of like, give him the point? Well, the
- 1:10:29fuck that's how democracy works in it, well, adres and voted, So
- 1:10:31I'm going to just assume you're going to vote no. Wouldn't it give us
- 1:10:39the point? But I may at a later date push for advocate for kindness.
- 1:10:45Yes, yeah, where's that integrity? The point is given? Okay,
- 1:10:50moving back on over, Superman gives up his never ending battle after the
- 1:10:56death of Lois Lane and the advent of a more violent type of hero.
- 1:11:00It's so weird to see Superman just give up on life. Giving up on
- 1:11:04life is not injustice Superman. And then there's the there's the comic where he
- 1:11:10goes into the sun and becomes Superman one million. It's not really that he's
- 1:11:14given up on life, but he's given up on the human race, and
- 1:11:19so he goes into the sun to soak up it's raised for a million years,
- 1:11:25and then in a Messiah like way, he says, now you're ready
- 1:11:29for me. And that's the only thing I can think of off the top
- 1:11:31of my head, because I don't think that's the plot of Kingdom Come either.
- 1:11:34No, okay, well, there is a more violent type of hero
- 1:11:38and Kingdom Come, and he's he's I don't know if he gives up so
- 1:11:41much. Is like, is like he is kind of disillusioned. It's the
- 1:11:47time and that one he's older. It's a long time since I read You
- 1:11:53need to read it. Yeah, I need to do an episode on it.
- 1:11:55Yeah, I remember enjoying it fifteen years ago when I read it.
- 1:12:00Yeah, I mean for this also, Alex Ross's art is, Oh yeah,
- 1:12:04he's a beast. Um, I mean, just for the sake of
- 1:12:08it, do you want to say Kingdom Come? I don't have anything better
- 1:12:13than that unless yeah. I think your description was a little bit closer than
- 1:12:15Superman one million. So this is why I love it is Kingdom come God.
- 1:12:26Ben Ben said, Kingdom come under his breath. And then you went
- 1:12:30into the DC one million thing and I was like, oh, yeah,
- 1:12:31go there. I was praying for chaos as well. I was hoping that
- 1:12:39would happen. But no, Kingdom come. Good job, good job,
- 1:12:42good team work. Yeah, Kingdom come. Okay. Next description, Captain
- 1:12:46Captivity. Superman was a skinny and scared man. He barely even played into
- 1:12:51the story other than as a mcguffin to look for. It was weird to
- 1:12:56have such a passive Superman in a DC story. I got it. Okay,
- 1:13:00yeah, I know you do. Do you have it? Uldra hutzpah
- 1:13:05Yes, wait Superman. I almost said locking it in as a joke,
- 1:13:15but I chose we used up all our mercy on the last one. No,
- 1:13:23this is a flash point. This is indeed flash points. Good stuff.
- 1:13:28Yeah, give me Superman one million? Next? Okay, okay,
- 1:13:30you want Superman one million? Next show show okay, okay, your next
- 1:13:36one. Basically, Superman splits himself into two to be a more efficient hero,
- 1:13:43and the whole thing was just bizarre. Um, so this technically wasn't
- 1:13:48an else world story. This is Superman Red and Superman Blue, And this
- 1:13:51came out of the post death of Superman situation. It was like a nineties
- 1:13:58revitalization to try and make him interesting by splitting his personalities. Do you remember
- 1:14:02what it was called? No? But like the idea is that it's supposed
- 1:14:06to be like an else world story and we're supposed to name the title of
- 1:14:10the else world story. But this was main like Earth Prime one before rebirth
- 1:14:16or New fifty two for memory were they supposed to And then yeah, yeah,
- 1:14:20I don't think. I think they're not all else worlds. They're not
- 1:14:24all else world. Then if we have to name the world reality, it's
- 1:14:29the name of the run, the name of the run. Oh, then
- 1:14:31it's Superman Red and Blue. Uh, post death of Superman. I mean,
- 1:14:36if that's what you're saying, I don't know about post death of Superman.
- 1:14:40I've got imaginary story Superman Red and Superman Blue. Okay, it's from
- 1:14:44the sixties and seventies apparently. Oh really, yeah, so maybe it was
- 1:14:46like a redo the oh, but they just again Yeah, honestly, I'm
- 1:14:51gonna give you the point for sure. All that matters is the name was
- 1:14:55right, ye, yeah, yeah, it's Superman Superman I had, I
- 1:14:58had red and Blue. Yeah, that's good enough for me. When it
- 1:15:03was an electric Superman, yeah yeah, when he had that and then he
- 1:15:08split himself into then but yeah, yeah electric and then the design has been
- 1:15:13rebooted recently too, right. Yeah, John Kent is going to have a
- 1:15:15version of that coming up. I know, I know kind of what I'm
- 1:15:20talking about. Yeah, yeah, yeah, definitely, definitely. I don't
- 1:15:25think anyone listening is thinking otherwise. Jason. Jason's really the weakest link in
- 1:15:31this episode. John. So I'm sitting here, like right, John,
- 1:15:36like that's gonna be right right, forty year old Superman fan, It's okay.
- 1:15:44Another one for the overpens, a universe where Superman wasn't found by the
- 1:15:49Kents but the Amish. He had to overcome being taught pacifism and to turn
- 1:15:55the other cheeks so he could be an effective hero Amish Superman. How bizarre.
- 1:16:00This is not what it's called, but I'm gonna just call it rum
- 1:16:02Springer. But with with the s is this Superman? They missed an opportunity
- 1:16:11if that's not what it's Yeah, yeah, yeah, this was Justice League
- 1:16:15the Nail godhwa, it's just this League the Nail. Did he have the
- 1:16:21beer? Yeah, he didn't show up until the very end, but with
- 1:16:26the beer, oh yeah, oh yeah yeah he was. And somebody blasts
- 1:16:30him with with heat vision and then all of a sudden he's like Superman there
- 1:16:32but without a suit on. Did say? I don't think so we did.
- 1:16:38He got like blasted with a laser beam and I thought that he was
- 1:16:42going to move back like three or four feet, but his beard was going
- 1:16:44to remain stationary. Okay, this this got one more for each of you.
- 1:16:51This is no longer the world of comics. These are versions of Superman
- 1:16:56or properties from outside of the comics. Beer in a moment like that one
- 1:17:00time in that one movie, Well maybe let's find out Okay, almost called
- 1:17:06it was, Oh, so this is for the Otisville Kryptonians. A uniformally
- 1:17:14boring version of a Superman story, as opposed to before when it was a
- 1:17:17fractured, disjointed, boring story. Apparently the creator wanted Superman to have a
- 1:17:23realistic arc and develop as a character and not be a quote one dimensional boy
- 1:17:29scout. Ah god, a one dimensional boy scout. It almost makes me
- 1:17:35think, yeah, this screams Zack Snyder. It screams Zack Snyder. It
- 1:17:42also but the which one could right, right, right right, Well,
- 1:17:45there's a Man of Steel as a solo film. Could you read the comment
- 1:17:48one more time? Please? Yes, A uniformally boring version of a Superman
- 1:17:53story, as opposed to before when it was a fractured, disjointed, boring
- 1:17:57story. The creator wanted Superman to have a realistic arm can develop as a
- 1:18:00character and not be a quote one dimensional boy scat. Yeah that does scream
- 1:18:04Man of Steel. The more I'd like listen to that comment, I was
- 1:18:08gonna say Curveball. Is it something like small Ville just because we mentioned it
- 1:18:13before two? But that's pretty disjointed, um and all over the place.
- 1:18:17As I'm trying to figure out the clue I'm seeing here is he says as
- 1:18:20before, Right, it's got to either be something that's that's remaking or retouching
- 1:18:28on something. Oh, is it fucking Superman Returns? Because that's super boring.
- 1:18:32It is un it's so boring, boring, like it's it's but it's
- 1:18:35a good But the thing is it's a callback to Superman one, which I
- 1:18:40don't think i'd call disjointed. No, but comments like they might be referencing
- 1:18:45that universe, which is certainly disjointed, right, Like we gotta jump yeah,
- 1:18:47I guess by the time you get to four. Yeah, after yeah,
- 1:18:50I think I think we jump on that? Is that shit is so
- 1:18:55boring? I liked Superman Returns. I left that Poles as well. We're
- 1:19:03disjointed. Yeah. Can I pull the trigger please? Or do you want
- 1:19:10to pull the trigger on Man of Steel? Because I also kind of agree
- 1:19:12with Man of Steel? I mean I think it can yeah, not to
- 1:19:15throw another you pull the trigger, You pull the trigger, so I don't
- 1:19:18feel bad. Somebody shoot me, for God's say, the eyeball is a
- 1:19:23clue because for the uh the other uh I mean, because there's also like
- 1:19:28the Snyder cut, which Superman doesn't really have much of an arc in it,
- 1:19:31but it is like a redo of something that was I'm gonna rule out.
- 1:19:35As captain, I don't rule out the Snyder cut. I don't think
- 1:19:38that's just because vot Man of Steel. But you did just do that.
- 1:19:46But dyah you, But since since you're my captain, I'm gonna have to
- 1:19:49defer. No, no, no, no. I just wanted to rule
- 1:19:53out Snyder cut because I strongly don't feel like it's Snyder cut based on the
- 1:19:57comment. But let's go with Man of Steel. Please with Man of Steel.
- 1:20:00Yeah, and you strongly don't feel like it's the Snyder cut. It
- 1:20:05is Zack Snyder's Justice League is, and it's actually official. This one's official
- 1:20:11reviews of it from top critics. God the fuck is Superman's arc in either
- 1:20:15of those? Right? Well, that that's exactly the point is that Zack
- 1:20:18Snyder thinks there is one God, Jesus Christ. That's how that original Justice
- 1:20:24League was for Action as Hell, I thought you guys were on something with
- 1:20:28with Superman Returns. You had me sold yeah yeah, yeah, yeah we
- 1:20:31got closer. Yeah you had me sold with Man of Steel as well.
- 1:20:35Yeah yeah, I had the answer in front of you. Yeah yeah yeah
- 1:20:38yeah. I don't feel bad about that. I just feel bad that I
- 1:20:40got it wrong. Remember, remember, so sorry. None of this matters.
- 1:20:45Literally, none of this matters. Yeah. It's not like love and
- 1:20:48friendship and stuff like that. Yeah. Yeah, it's a man in pens.
- 1:20:51Speaking of pens, the overpens here is your final one. What piece
- 1:20:57of Superman media is being described here? Although he's secretly performed heroic feats as
- 1:21:01a moody teenager and young man before moving to Metropolis. He meets Lois at
- 1:21:05a younger age and maintains a complicated friendship with Lex Luthor into young adulthood.
- 1:21:12Oh shit, it's going to be Smallville, right, clearly it's Lois and
- 1:21:15Clark. Agree with my captain. I think it's probably going to be small
- 1:21:21Ville. Yeah, it's definitely small It is small Ville. This is what
- 1:21:24Smallville appears in the quiz. It's there for you Smallville fans. Somebody saved
- 1:21:29me, isn't Lana laying in that one too. Interest Okay, yeah,
- 1:21:33the first several seasons, big time, big time. Oh did you watch
- 1:21:38Smallville? Of course I watched Smallville. You are slightly older than me.
- 1:21:42Yeah. It was just as a child when I had no control over what
- 1:21:45was on TV. Yeah, that was the Superman film that was on of
- 1:21:47course, of course Young Series. So yep, okay, I'm feeling Jason's
- 1:21:54rage. That's the three. I'm going to need some help calculating the scores.
- 1:21:59So just this League assemble. Nice. Apparently that Verbus property of the
- 1:22:03Walt Disney Company, so I'll try that again. Justice League gather in the
- 1:22:06same area for the same purpose. Not as catchy, not have a catch
- 1:22:13phrase? Do they do? They have a catch phrase? Teen Titans do?
- 1:22:15I checked it? Teen Titans go? Yeah, yeah yeah, that's
- 1:22:18literally yeah, yeah, they don't need a catch phrase, Justice League.
- 1:22:25Okay, here are those scores. The Otisville Kryptonians are on fifteen points,
- 1:22:30but the Overpants are still in the lead with twenty points, big lead,
- 1:22:34and it's the quick fire rounds, so anything could still happen. Anything could
- 1:22:38happen if if John is bad at pop culture, we could have this,
- 1:22:43you know, Ben, Yeah, anything could happen, yeah if. But
- 1:22:50before we get to the final round, let's talk prizes. This episode,
- 1:22:55Star Prize is the concept of justice. Justice belongs to those who are will
- 1:23:00to uphold it, even when they're not affected by the powerful and unjust.
- 1:23:04So there you go. You'll get to go home with a bit of justice
- 1:23:06in your pocket. Just that, Yeah, just this. Oh but I'll
- 1:23:15let the police know that next time they pull me over. Yeah, play
- 1:23:20them that audio clip that. Yeah, I'll calm them down. It was
- 1:23:25a men's a white man. It will calm them down. That's worked so
- 1:23:30far. I mean, if you ever get pulled over. But a winning
- 1:23:38team will also receive a gem mint copy of Action Comics number one rated PSA
- 1:23:45ten and oh my god, it's just gone in the shred right you.
- 1:23:50I shouldn't have left out there. I'll get you for this bank scene.
- 1:23:56Up next is our quick fire round, where it's all to play for.
- 1:24:00But first we've got to play one last set of ads. You know what,
- 1:24:03I'd skip forward and not listen to them, but that's just me.
- 1:24:05You do you boos you? After this, our final quick fire around is
- 1:24:17called et Elements Test in this game, I'll reveal the name of an alien
- 1:24:24from pop culture history. It's up to you too, then name the mineral.
- 1:24:28They'd be vulnerable too if they followed the Superman rule of being weak to
- 1:24:32a mineral named after the planet they're from. So, for example, if
- 1:24:38I said, look up in the sky, is it a member of staffleet?
- 1:24:43Is it a science officer? Yes, it's mister Spark, you would
- 1:24:46say Vulcan night, Vulcan nights exactly that on the end of the planets.
- 1:24:55That's the trickier, Okay. I was going in totally a different direction with
- 1:24:58that. Gona dilithium, a mineral from the Star Trek universe. I like
- 1:25:06it. That's just the whole of the game for another episode. So they're
- 1:25:11not real minerals. It's just yeah, it's the it's the planets that you're
- 1:25:15looking for that the alien is from, and then adding it to the end
- 1:25:18of that, And you can interrupt me at any time during the clue.
- 1:25:21It will all be in the style of look up in the air, and
- 1:25:25then I'll reveal more things and then the name at the end. You can
- 1:25:29buzz in at any time by saying your team name. Let's practice that now.
- 1:25:32Over pants, over pants? Otis Phil? I was trying to read
- 1:25:39Matt's hand, right, Kryptonian, I'll go yeah, yeah, I'd take
- 1:25:45otis Phil or Kryptonian. Either of those is good. Yeah me, okay,
- 1:25:47we'll start the timer. Now. Look up in the sky. Is
- 1:25:51it a time traveler? Is he in a police box over pants? Yes,
- 1:25:57oldra Oh shit, I have no clue what planet he's from. I
- 1:26:02do, but I couldn't remember the name of my team. So you named
- 1:26:11us soldier Gallifrayite is yeah, I've t happened. No, you called top
- 1:26:23out now after one question. Look up in the sky? Is it an
- 1:26:27annoying prequel star? Is it culturally insensitive? Yes, it's jaw Jaw Banks
- 1:26:33over Pryptonite? Oh yeah, I'm Kryptonian. Yeah yeah, it's gonna be
- 1:26:38John with the overpants. Is it Nabu White? It is Nubu Whites totally
- 1:26:45from. Look up in the sky. Is it protecting Spice? Is it
- 1:26:48a fan? Yep, that's gonna be John again. Holy shit? Why
- 1:26:54am I spacing out? Oh my goodness, it is the quick fire round
- 1:26:57Kryptonian. I'll just put that in there. Just I'm gonna I'm gonna throw
- 1:27:01it. It is arakasite noise. I was gonna say do night. Yeah,
- 1:27:11the word dune cup in my head when I said overpants colloquially. Yeahs
- 1:27:17an argument we made, but we got the correct answer. That's fine.
- 1:27:20Look up in the sky. Is it a truck? Is it an autobot
- 1:27:25Kryptonian? Yes, Jason cybertron night, it is Cybertronight. You mess with
- 1:27:32me on this. We're never doing a Transformer episode. Rise of the Beast
- 1:27:41comes up this summer. Never not happening ever. Look up in the sky.
- 1:27:47Is it a civil servant? Is it reading poetry? Yes, it's
- 1:27:51prosthetic. Vogue on jelts that. Yeah, it's gonna be John with overpants.
- 1:27:58Vogue Night. I'm not quite not the name of the planet. Actually,
- 1:28:03Oh, I'm gonna I'm gonna throw it over if if Ben thinks he
- 1:28:08might be bad bad. So it's not Vogon. I thought they were from
- 1:28:13Vogan. It's not Vogon. They are Vogons. They are the Vogons.
- 1:28:17Oh this is that's that's saddening. I'm embarrassed. Hey, you're the big,
- 1:28:23big Hitchhikers fan. So it's I don't feel so bad. For a
- 1:28:30second, it's not Vokesphia is the name of that planet? Right? Was
- 1:28:39what I was looking for. I know I'm being pedantic, but it is
- 1:28:41the quick fire arms. Okay, you're British. Where's my mercy? Do
- 1:28:45you all show you the same mercy the Vogon showed Earth. Look up in
- 1:28:53the sky. Is it the anthropomorphic embodiment of entropy? Is it on the
- 1:28:58back of a giant space turtle? Yes, it's death Kryptonians. Yes,
- 1:29:03ben Oh doesn't have cheeze um ring World eight. It's it's not it's not.
- 1:29:14I'm so sorry. Are you looking Yeah? Yeah, yeah, Well
- 1:29:20I'm not gonna. I already gave it wrong, so I'm not gonna says
- 1:29:25grace and kindness token thing that she put out for John doesn't fucking know it's
- 1:29:30you know what? You know what? Fine, well, because that will
- 1:29:32balance it out, right, Yeah, I was gonna. I was going
- 1:29:35to try to institute it for the last oh, the oh, the Hitchhiker's
- 1:29:41one. Yeah, I'm gonna give you it's Discworld eyed. And then everyone
- 1:29:55was like, no, don't give it. No, No, that's what
- 1:29:57I'm saying. This is part of the mercy because you've given it to them
- 1:30:01is a part of an entirely different franchise. Now I'm gonna pull a Jason
- 1:30:04here, like, nah, that's yeah, that's the wrong answer. When
- 1:30:11I when I thought like, maybe it was the name of the turtle instead,
- 1:30:15then then I was gonna be like, all right, which I can't
- 1:30:17remember it all right now, but like if that was the case, be
- 1:30:19like, all right, yeah, that's close enough. But no, it's
- 1:30:21definitely Discorreld. That's that's that's that's the wrong circular thing. I'm gonna go,
- 1:30:26Okay, I'm gonna I'm gonna go Superman here and do the right thing.
- 1:30:30Okay, very nice, very nice, very the matic. I'll move
- 1:30:32on with the next question as I'm more confused about the skulls than ever to
- 1:30:36look up in the sky. Is it a puppet? Is it a sitcom?
- 1:30:41Sta? Yes, Crytonians, Oh yes, Ben mel mackheite, it
- 1:30:47is mel Mackeite. Good Alf knowledge, Oh oh, we just watched the
- 1:30:54first I was like, the Muppets live on Earth and we are of the
- 1:30:58right age to no Alf. Yeah you guys, yeah, yeah, you
- 1:31:01guys are probably a little young for Elf. I'm aware of him. In
- 1:31:04pog form. Yeah, oh yeah, Look up in the sky. Is
- 1:31:11it a secondary animated cartoon character. Is it Futurama's favorite invader? Yes,
- 1:31:16it's Lure oh Cryptotian. Yes, yep, it's let's go with Jason open
- 1:31:26you take it. I mean it's Omicron perci a tight exactly spots on that
- 1:31:31brings me joy. Look up in the sky. Is it a boy with
- 1:31:36high Mida Clareans. Is it a sith Lord? Yes, it's Darth Vader
- 1:31:42Kryptonian. I think that's gonna be overpans with John. Oh, Tattoin eight,
- 1:31:47it is Tattoin nice. Look up in the sky. Is it a
- 1:31:51victim of space colonialism? Is it blue? Because that's what James Cameron wishes
- 1:31:56all women were Kryptonian? That's Joe on again. Yeah, it's uh oh
- 1:32:03shit, yeah, yeah, oh my goodness. Yeah five, you weren't
- 1:32:11on the guitar? Yeah no, I completely lost it. Gosh, throw
- 1:32:17it on over pandorite It is pandor I mean it could be unobtainium. Yeah,
- 1:32:27John slamming is uh head into his hand, as I've been doing all
- 1:32:30episode long. So this is poetic for me. Luck Up in the Sky
- 1:32:41is this a living planet? Is it a deadbeat sauce steel father? But
- 1:32:45Kryptoniantian? Yeah, it's all Yeah, that's on you. Yeah, Ego
- 1:32:49the living planet? I yeah, I'll take it. Yeah, the full
- 1:32:54name. To cover my bases, I could said ego, yeah I know
- 1:32:58that, but yeah yeah, no can he's the living planet? I egoite
- 1:33:01what Ego White would have would have if he called you wrong for that?
- 1:33:05I would have that would have been a mercy one. Okay quick before the
- 1:33:12buzz up? Look up in the sky? Is it a bird? Yes?
- 1:33:16Ben, Kryptonite. I'm so sorry. I was pretty hoping someone to
- 1:33:24fall into that track. Yes, I'll finish the line for the other table.
- 1:33:29I want to I want to give I want to give respects to Ben
- 1:33:30though. Oh yes he jumped the gun definitely just try to catch you on
- 1:33:33it method. Yeah, I forgot. This was season three and now you're
- 1:33:39changing the format up. Oh, we're changing all the rules used to the
- 1:33:43rule Now is it a bird? Is it a plane? No, it's
- 1:33:46lowest lane, so over Pence, this it is just earth, it is.
- 1:34:00What's the buzz Oh it was going to be a trick question. Yeah
- 1:34:03it was. Actually there's a comic, whereas from Krypton and he's like Superman's
- 1:34:10cousin, and so they're really fucking each other and that's gross. Okay,
- 1:34:13but like's face Alabama, that was so close that that actually got pretty.
- 1:34:23But before we get to the final scores, i'd like to thank our players.
- 1:34:27You've all been am I going to say it. It's the obvious thing
- 1:34:30to say, but in it being so obvious, I don't want to say
- 1:34:33it. Fine, here it goes. You've all been super Man, Ben
- 1:34:44John, your podcast Exploration returns this month. Yes, yeah, I've actually

- 1:36:36a note here from Adam that says more gate Leapers, so that. Okay,
- 1:36:42let's get to the scores. It really got tight. There was like
- 1:36:45one or two points in it at one point during that and it was very
- 1:36:48exciting and it really came down to the last two questions. It was quite
- 1:36:53the comebacks. But you can tell from the way I've worded my sentence.
- 1:36:57Yeah, your winners today are the overpens. What a fantastic It's phil Kryptonians
- 1:37:06finish on twenty two even Okay, oh, it's Berg is the correct thing.
- 1:37:10But that's what we have that we came into that episode with that knowing
- 1:37:14that, and uh, it really reflected our performance to two points. Also,
- 1:37:21like strong up the gate, John just fucking saving those villains man.
- 1:37:27Yeah, that was great knowledge, great great knowledge. I was really hoping
- 1:37:30I could best him in some Superman quiz game here, just to rub that
- 1:37:33in his face for the rest of our friendship. Yeah, like when I
- 1:37:36beat my fiance friends seen it? Oh wow, she hated me for a
- 1:37:41while. Oh we gotta we gotta do a friends episode. Oh yeah,
