- 0:00Speaker 1: Scotty, it's been a minute since we saw you c
- 0:02Speaker 1: m a fest Darius. Obviously, we saw you at the
- 0:05Speaker 1: Rhyman show for Saint Jude again.
- 0:07Speaker 2: This year again. Man, dude, it's it's an absolute pleasure. Man.
- 0:11Speaker 2: Uh let me, Scotty.
- 0:13Speaker 1: I'm gonna start start with you, because anytime a song
- 0:17Speaker 1: is referenced, I'm gonna use the word older, but no
- 0:20Speaker 1: offense to the band, Okay, But anytime a song that
- 0:24Speaker 1: is I almost said classic. Anytime a song that is
- 0:31Speaker 1: referenced that was impactful, that's.
- 0:33Speaker 2: What we're gonna say. Uh uh.
- 0:36Speaker 1: Usually like it's just referenced, or it's sampled, or it's covered.
- 0:40Speaker 1: At what point did you know that that this song
- 0:43Speaker 1: was gonna fit into Bottle Rockets?
- 0:46Speaker 3: Yeah?
- 0:46Speaker 4: Well, you know, I mean I grew up in North Carolina,
- 0:49Speaker 4: and I mean these guys right here are huge everywhere,
- 0:51Speaker 4: but in the Carolina's especially all the royalty, you know.
- 0:54Speaker 4: So I grew up hearing their songs in restaurants and bars,
- 0:57Speaker 4: at baseball games wherever you go. There UI was playing,
- 1:00Speaker 4: So I heard cracked review everywhere I went. So we
- 1:04Speaker 4: were writing Bottle Rockets. We were talking about reminiscent on
- 1:07Speaker 4: summers and the soundtracks of those summers, and I was
- 1:09Speaker 4: the one that blurted out. I mean I listened to
- 1:11Speaker 4: Hooti and the Blowfish when I was growing up. And
- 1:13Speaker 4: then Frank Rodgers is the one that kind of went
- 1:15Speaker 4: in to hold my hand after the chorus, and we
- 1:17Speaker 4: were like, well that kind of works, so.
- 1:20Speaker 2: We went with it.
- 1:22Speaker 1: But why include the band? You could have easily just
- 1:24Speaker 1: covered it, Like why were you?
- 1:26Speaker 3: Like?
- 1:26Speaker 2: No, do I want these guys a part of this project?
- 1:28Speaker 5: Yeah?
- 1:29Speaker 4: I don't think we ever even thought about just pulling
- 1:32Speaker 4: it from the record or sampling it. I mean to
- 1:34Speaker 4: us that I did the demo just myself singing it
- 1:37Speaker 4: and it didn't quite have the magic. But I just
- 1:41Speaker 4: wanted to see if they'd be willing to come on
- 1:43Speaker 4: the song. And you know, I know this song's got
- 1:45Speaker 4: to be one of y'all's babies, so I was kind
- 1:46Speaker 4: of nervous to ask, if I'm honest, But luckily they
- 1:50Speaker 4: loved it and wanted to jump on, and it took
- 1:52Speaker 4: it from a song I really loved to one of
- 1:54Speaker 4: my favorite things I've ever done.
- 1:56Speaker 2: It's it's such a great song.
- 1:57Speaker 1: And now, Darius, you guys, when when the call came
- 1:59Speaker 1: in that Scotty didn't just want to sample it. He
- 2:02Speaker 1: wanted you guys to physically get together and be a
- 2:05Speaker 1: part of it. What did that mean to you guys
- 2:07Speaker 1: as a whole?
- 2:08Speaker 6: Oh, Frank Frank Cole Frank called me in and said
- 2:12Speaker 6: they had the idea, you know, And I told him,
- 2:16Speaker 6: you know, Scotty and I were friends a long time,
- 2:18Speaker 6: and I was like, you know, I love the idea.
- 2:20Speaker 7: You know, we got to send this a song. And uh,
- 2:23Speaker 7: he said a song. I loved it. And then he
- 2:25Speaker 7: said to these guys and it was just like it
- 2:27Speaker 7: made sense.
- 2:29Speaker 6: It just made sense.
- 2:31Speaker 4: I was recorded to you were saying you are already
- 2:33Speaker 4: in the studio, I mean together as a hole in
- 2:36Speaker 4: Charleston when when we were in the studio about to cut.
- 2:39Speaker 4: So kind of just worked out and I sure did.
- 2:43Speaker 3: And let me just put on record that this Bottle
- 2:46Speaker 3: Rockets is a great song. We didn't need to help
- 2:48Speaker 3: him hold my hand on its sou So the fact
- 2:50Speaker 3: that you guys included us is just such an honor.
- 2:52Speaker 3: And it's a little butter and gravy on top of
- 2:54Speaker 3: what is already a great song.
- 2:56Speaker 4: Yeah, I appreciate it, man.
- 2:57Speaker 2: Thank you knowing that you know.
- 3:00Speaker 1: And and I say this with all the respect in
- 3:02Speaker 1: the world for Hooting in the Blowfish, because that Cracked
- 3:04Speaker 1: Rearview album raised me more than my own parents did
- 3:06Speaker 1: at one point. So, but to know that when you
- 3:12Speaker 1: hear like like samples or songs that have inspired other people,
- 3:16Speaker 1: you're hearing George Straight, You're hearing you know, all these
- 3:20Speaker 1: all these legendary names, and then to hear an artist
- 3:22Speaker 1: go hey, like Hooting in the Blowfish, This is like
- 3:25Speaker 1: an inspiration to me. What does that mean to you
- 3:26Speaker 1: to be that George Straight to a guy like Scotty, Oh.
- 3:31Speaker 4: My gosh, it's an honor.
- 3:32Speaker 5: It's Darius was close. He said it was thirty years ago.
- 3:35Speaker 5: It was thirty six years ago when Blowfish first started
- 3:38Speaker 5: playing the song. Now, nobody in the world had heard
- 3:41Speaker 5: it because we had about eighteen fans, but it was
- 3:44Speaker 5: thirty six years ago we started playing it together. So
- 3:46Speaker 5: to hear something that feels old and by us recording
- 3:51Speaker 5: with Scotty, it feels nostalgic. Instead of feeling like it
- 3:56Speaker 5: was sample, it actually feels like we were there and
- 3:58Speaker 5: we were so I think that's what changes the vibe
- 4:01Speaker 5: a little bit. It throws back literally to another time
- 4:05Speaker 5: that we're all sort of trying to recapture.
- 4:08Speaker 6: And the thing that was really amazing to me was
- 4:11Speaker 6: Frank Rodgers.
- 4:12Speaker 7: I mean it sounds exactly like the record. Yeah, I
- 4:14Speaker 7: mean it's shocking for me, you know when people come
- 4:18Speaker 7: to me and said, that's a great samp hole, Like
- 4:19Speaker 7: that's not a sample when it's sung it again, but
- 4:22Speaker 7: it just sounds so great. It's also it's like the record.
- 4:25Speaker 7: It just fits in there so perfectly.
- 4:27Speaker 1: I love this all when it comes to to what
- 4:32Speaker 1: Hooty and the Blowfish have meant to so many people.
- 4:34Speaker 2: And obviously you're on the song with Scotty.
- 4:36Speaker 1: Every artist you don't have a you don't have a
- 4:39Speaker 1: song you dislike, right, Like there's no ugly babies is
- 4:42Speaker 1: what I always like to say. But if anybody was
- 4:44Speaker 1: going to bring a song back to life and make
- 4:46Speaker 1: it a part of country radio today, would you each
- 4:50Speaker 1: have picked this this to be the one with Scotti?
- 4:53Speaker 7: Oh?
- 4:53Speaker 6: I would probably pick learn Cry?
- 4:55Speaker 7: But yeah, yeah, but hold my hand.
- 4:57Speaker 4: Bits right, it's been raining all nay. I thought we
- 5:00Speaker 4: were going to school.
- 5:07Speaker 1: Is that the same for you guys as well? Like
- 5:08Speaker 1: you let her cry or hold my hand.
- 5:12Speaker 3: I think we you know, we have some actually pretty
- 5:14Speaker 3: cool cuts that were that lent themselves to the Americana
- 5:18Speaker 3: country role on our albums that we never really explored
- 5:21Speaker 3: as the time that we could pull back on.
- 5:23Speaker 5: That'd be fun.
- 5:24Speaker 3: But you know, as songwriters were, I was looking to
- 5:27Speaker 3: write the best new song ever that's ever been written
- 5:30Speaker 3: out there. So that's kind of where my head's out
- 5:32Speaker 3: a little bait, he goes, I mean, let her cry
- 5:35Speaker 3: definitely seeing.
- 5:37Speaker 5: I think, uh, anytime you hear an old song start
- 5:41Speaker 5: a new life again, whether it's.
- 5:42Speaker 3: Just the chorus or pre chorus or the whole.
- 5:44Speaker 5: Thing, it just gives a good feeling of your hard work.
- 5:48Speaker 5: And uh, in songwriting sometimes can last decades. You know,
- 5:51Speaker 5: sometimes nobody cares, but it's always nice when something gets
- 5:55Speaker 5: a new life every few years. I know the Award Show,
- 5:58Speaker 5: the Country Award Show years back, it was done as
- 6:01Speaker 5: the cold opening with with.
- 6:04Speaker 1: That, it's it's wild as well because when you guys
- 6:14Speaker 1: put that album out, it was more like rock ish
- 6:17Speaker 1: our our alternative or adult contemporary. But now you fast
- 6:20Speaker 1: forward to where it falls more in line with what's
- 6:23Speaker 1: happening with country. Is that weird to watch music you
- 6:26Speaker 1: created at one point, almost like change genres without your control.
- 6:31Speaker 3: It's funny, It's like it's it shows you that that's
- 6:34Speaker 3: just semantics, right. Music's what's what everybody feels, and that's
- 6:37Speaker 3: the most important thing. And so it's the fact that
- 6:40Speaker 3: we made such a timeless record.
- 6:42Speaker 4: Uh.
- 6:42Speaker 3: You know, I think we felt that while we were
- 6:44Speaker 3: making it. I don't think we knew it was going
- 6:46Speaker 3: to be uh, you know, to the extent that it
- 6:48Speaker 3: has been to our culture. It's so it's a wonderful feeling.
- 6:52Speaker 2: You know, Scotty, you are a guy who is no
- 6:54Speaker 2: stranger to the country radio.
- 6:56Speaker 6: Uh.
- 6:56Speaker 1: But you also know, sometimes things move quick, and sometimes
- 7:00Speaker 1: they move extremely slow.
- 7:02Speaker 7: Most of the time, most of the time they moved
- 7:05Speaker 7: extremely slow.
- 7:08Speaker 2: I wasn't trying to call us out like that, but.
- 7:10Speaker 4: I think at one point I had the record for
- 7:12Speaker 4: the longest chart run ever, the number one.
- 7:13Speaker 7: I was like, it got there.
- 7:15Speaker 1: Well, you know, it's okay, you've went from having a
- 7:18Speaker 1: baby to a middle.
- 7:19Speaker 2: Schooler, but it's got the number one.
- 7:22Speaker 1: What does it mean for you to see this song
- 7:25Speaker 1: moving It's one of your faster moving songs of your
- 7:27Speaker 1: career chart wise, and to be able to share it
- 7:29Speaker 1: with guys that you looked up to when you were younger.
- 7:31Speaker 4: It's not even closed. I think this has beaten my
- 7:33Speaker 4: next fastest song by like twenty spots, so from from
- 7:37Speaker 4: where we put it out to now. So I don't know,
- 7:40Speaker 4: I've just never gotten a response to a song like this.
- 7:42Speaker 4: I think, you know, like Sony said, we got a
- 7:44Speaker 4: new song, but it makes people kind of reminisce, you know,
- 7:46Speaker 4: and to go back in time and that nostalgia feel
- 7:49Speaker 4: to it. So I've had more people stop me on
- 7:51Speaker 4: the streets about bottle rockets, more people tweeting, more people
- 7:55Speaker 4: passing me on their boat on the lake just bumping
- 7:58Speaker 4: bottle rockets. I'm like, my word, like this song. He's
- 8:00Speaker 4: everywhere right now. So so it's it's been really cool
- 8:03Speaker 4: for me and for me as a fan to have
- 8:05Speaker 4: a song.
- 8:06Speaker 2: With these guys.
- 8:06Speaker 4: I've been I've been I never listened to my own music,
- 8:10Speaker 4: but I've been listening to.
- 8:13Speaker 7: For me, it's been crazy, you know, I've been out,
- 8:15Speaker 7: you know, playing some shows and summer and every you know,
- 8:17Speaker 7: talk to everybody in radio, all the fans and were saying,
- 8:20Speaker 7: you know, so and so on, and that's pretty cool
- 8:23Speaker 7: thing pink part of them.
- 8:26Speaker 1: But it's funny because, like y'all had mentioned, it had
- 8:28Speaker 1: been thirty plus years since this song came out.
- 8:30Speaker 2: Uh to Hoody and the Blowfish at any point where people.
- 8:34Speaker 1: Are like, oh, that's that's that's that Scotty McCreery's song,
- 8:36Speaker 1: and you're like, well, hang on.
- 8:37Speaker 4: No, I have not had that yet.
- 8:40Speaker 7: I'm sure we'll tell me. I'm sure there'll be some
- 8:43Speaker 7: twelve year old kids.
