- 0:00Speaker 1: Stanzas, in youth, have I known one with whom the
- 0:04Speaker 1: earth in secret communing held, as he with it in
- 0:09Speaker 1: daylight and in beauty from his birth, whose fervid flickering
- 0:15Speaker 1: torch of life was lit from the sun and stars,
- 0:20Speaker 1: whence he had drawn forth a passionate light, such for
- 0:25Speaker 1: his spirit was fit. And yet that spirit knew not,
- 0:30Speaker 1: in the hour of its own fervor, what had o'er
- 0:34Speaker 1: it power. Perhaps it may be that my mind is
- 0:39Speaker 1: wrought to a fever by the moonbeam that hangs o'er,
- 0:44Speaker 1: but I will half believe that wild light fraught with
- 0:49Speaker 1: more of sovereignty than ancient lore hath ever told. Or
- 0:55Speaker 1: is it of a thought, the unembodied essence, and no more,
- 1:00Speaker 1: that with a quickening spell doth o'er us pass, as
- 1:05Speaker 1: do of the night-time o'er the summer grass? Doth o'er
- 1:10Speaker 1: us pass, when, as the expanding eye to the loved object,
- 1:16Speaker 1: so the tear to the lid will start, which lately
- 1:20Speaker 1: slept in apathy? And yet it need not be, that
- 1:25Speaker 1: object hid from us in life but common, which doth
- 1:30Speaker 1: lie each hour before us, but then only bid with
- 1:36Speaker 1: a strange sound, as of a harp-string broken, to awake us.
- 1:42Speaker 1: Tis a symbol and a token of what in other
- 1:46Speaker 1: worlds shall be, and given in beauty by our God.
- 1:52Speaker 1: to those alone who otherwise would fall from life and heaven,
- 1:57Speaker 1: drawn by their heart's passion, and that tone, that high
- 2:02Speaker 1: tone of the Spirit, which hath striven, though not with faith,
- 2:08Speaker 1: with godliness, whose throne, with desperate energy it hath beaten down,
- 2:15Speaker 1: wearing its own deep feeling as a crown.
