- 0:29Speaker 2: start a training school for those people.
- 0:31Speaker 4: Why shouldn't I be that person?

- 0:42Speaker 2: Parcells says, listen to me. Everybody has a price. My
- 0:45Speaker 2: wife has a price, and if the price is good enough,
- 0:48Speaker 2: she's gone.
- 0:49Speaker 5: But that's a tough line about your wife, man, I
- 0:50Speaker 5: wouldn't I want to.
- 0:51Speaker 2: I know he's the one that said my wife doesn't
- 0:53Speaker 2: know if it's puffed or stuff.
- 0:56Speaker 4: But they're a playoff team if the quarterback is healthy.
- 0:58Speaker 4: They went seven and ten without PLAYA.

- 2:31Speaker 4: I kind of like that, all.
- 2:32Speaker 3: Right, just made the newsletter last week.
- 2:35Speaker 6: Yeah, the cartoons lukewarm reception.
- 2:38Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, she came around to I liked it.
- 2:40Speaker 4: I thought it was good. I thought that was a
- 2:41Speaker 4: good cartoon, good stuff.
- 2:42Speaker 5: That's it's always a good joke when Ivan's thinking about
- 2:45Speaker 5: football and Jess is wondering what is he thinking?
- 2:46Speaker 6: But she must know you're thinking, Oh no, she's not ding.
- 2:49Speaker 4: What's it called? Like an entertainment when you do that,
- 2:51Speaker 4: like you have like the same punchline, you know, that's
- 2:55Speaker 4: you use for a lot of different jokes, and it
- 2:57Speaker 4: always gets back to the same thing.
- 2:59Speaker 5: That's not gonna called That's not a callback? Is one?
- 3:02Speaker 5: Like that's a but I don't know if that's what
- 3:03Speaker 5: you're talking speaking of.
- 3:04Speaker 2: That we were talking before the show. When you get
- 3:06Speaker 2: rejected for a job in like Hollywood, Like, what what
- 3:09Speaker 2: do they call that? What do they call the piece
- 3:11Speaker 2: of paper that they give you that they mail you?
- 3:14Speaker 5: Oh, I don't know, a rejection slip a rejection. Let
- 3:17Speaker 5: I don't know.
- 3:17Speaker 2: I was totally were pink slips because I actually literally
- 3:20Speaker 2: have pink slips from Saturday Night Live and The Letterman Show.
- 3:24Speaker 5: Really yeah, now, I don't know, I don't know.
- 3:26Speaker 6: That's you guys. You guys are peppering me with I
- 3:28Speaker 6: don't think.
- 3:29Speaker 2: Also, as Paul said, when you get fired, you get.
- 3:31Speaker 5: A pink slip, you know, right, you know, yeah, it
- 3:34Speaker 5: sounds right.
- 3:35Speaker 6: No, I wouldn't know.
- 3:36Speaker 2: I only uh, only gut jobs.
- 3:38Speaker 4: So it's so it's not a Hollywood thing that Fred,
- 3:40Speaker 4: you know, maybe just special for you guys.
- 3:43Speaker 5: Had heard, but those might be creative jobs. And I
- 3:45Speaker 5: was more at that point on the haven't.
- 3:47Speaker 2: You heard people say I have a drawer full of
- 3:48Speaker 2: pink slips when I was looking for jobs?
- 3:51Speaker 5: No, not really.
- 3:52Speaker 4: I mean Mike was in charge of handing out the pink.
- 3:54Speaker 6: That's that's that's probably pretty cool.
- 3:56Speaker 4: He was crushing dreams. No, I mean, it's not not chasing,
- 4:00Speaker 4: it's not being an.
- 4:01Speaker 5: Actor and having to go on counless auditions and just you.
- 4:04Speaker 3: Know, everybody everybody in LA thinks they're an actor or
- 4:08Speaker 3: right screen, they're like your waitress, your uber driver, you're like, oh,
- 4:12Speaker 3: what do you do? I'm an actor?
- 4:14Speaker 2: Would you like an appen? Would you like to look
- 4:15Speaker 2: at my script?
- 4:16Speaker 6: A special st that's it. That's it. But that's also
- 4:19Speaker 6: I say business.
- 4:20Speaker 5: One of the cool things about that I liked living
- 4:22Speaker 5: about out there, you know, initially, was just there are
- 4:24Speaker 5: a lot of people out there chasing their dreams and
- 4:26Speaker 5: trying to do stuff like that, whether they're musicians or
- 4:29Speaker 5: actors or screenwriters. So you do meet a lot of
- 4:31Speaker 5: people like that who have you know, left their hometown
- 4:33Speaker 5: and are trying for something, and a lot of them
- 4:36Speaker 5: end up moving back to their hometown, most of them.
- 4:38Speaker 2: I mean.
- 4:39Speaker 3: It does bring a nice creative energy to the area though,
- 4:42Speaker 3: because everybody's kind of you know, trying to make it
- 4:45Speaker 3: and has, like some.
- 4:47Speaker 2: Be exhausting after a while. Just like everybody you talk
- 4:50Speaker 2: to is like, well, I'm you know, waiting tables, but
- 4:52Speaker 2: I really want it. You know.
- 4:53Speaker 5: Well, you go into like any coffee shop at ten
- 4:55Speaker 5: am on a Tuesday.
- 4:56Speaker 6: When most people are at work, and it's just packed
- 4:58Speaker 6: with you know, people like, where are you people do?
- 5:00Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, that's for a callback, that's there.
- 5:04Speaker 2: You go, all right, So what's on people's minds something
- 5:08Speaker 2: that is on my mind. And I know we've talked
- 5:11Speaker 2: about it before and he has talked about it before,
- 5:14Speaker 2: but Tom Brady had again statements about the quarterback protections
- 5:18Speaker 2: in the league and how he's very strong about you know,
- 5:21Speaker 2: once you become a runner, you should lose those protections.
- 5:24Speaker 2: It's just not fair to the defense. And I you know,
- 5:27Speaker 2: I think most people agree with that. But I understand
- 5:31Speaker 2: like the need to protect the quarterback and the ability
- 5:34Speaker 2: to still be able to give yourself up. But I
- 5:37Speaker 2: think maybe you tweak that sliding role rule a little
- 5:40Speaker 2: bit because it really is unfair. I don't know if
- 5:42Speaker 2: anyone else heard what he had to say yesterday.
- 5:44Speaker 4: I didn't hear what Brady had to say, but yeah,
- 5:47Speaker 4: I mean I largely I would agree with the premise.
- 5:50Speaker 4: I mean, I think you can still allow quarterbacks to slide,
- 5:53Speaker 4: but can maybe they not be so willing to throw
- 5:57Speaker 4: the flag if there's contact, you know, and I think
- 6:00Speaker 4: that there were times that they did that, you know,
- 6:04Speaker 4: even in the playoffs. This week we were talking about
- 6:06Speaker 4: you know, Lamar Jackson took a couple of hits. But
- 6:08Speaker 4: I feel like people look at it as Mahomes is
- 6:12Speaker 4: afforded protection that like Drake May didn't get when he
- 6:15Speaker 4: slid late and got a concussion against the Jets, he
- 6:18Speaker 4: didn't get the penalty. Yeah, does anybody doubt that Mahomes
- 6:22Speaker 4: would have gotten a penalty on that same kind of
- 6:24Speaker 4: a play.
- 6:24Speaker 2: Well, the helmet's read so like it showed.
- 6:27Speaker 4: That's good. You can see it. It's a good point.
- 6:29Speaker 2: It's a good point.
- 6:30Speaker 5: Now, I did see Mahomes, I think too, said you know,
- 6:32Speaker 5: I shouldn't have done that a little bit earlier. Today
- 6:34Speaker 5: you walk back his his diving a little bit.
- 6:36Speaker 6: But I agree.
- 6:37Speaker 5: I mean, I think I just think it's funny coming
- 6:39Speaker 5: from Brady, who I think a lot of people attribute
- 6:41Speaker 5: to him being the quarterback where a lot of these
- 6:43Speaker 5: protections started to go.
- 6:44Speaker 2: He ran four times in his career, afforded this protection. Well,
- 6:49Speaker 2: you didn't need it.
- 6:50Speaker 4: You were in the pocket, and they wouldn't And by
- 6:52Speaker 4: the way, they changed a rule for you right in
- 6:53Speaker 4: the pocket.
- 6:54Speaker 6: Well, that's what I mean.
- 6:55Speaker 5: Like he was kind of the start of the influx
- 6:57Speaker 5: of rules to really protect the quarterbacks right before or
- 7:00Speaker 5: two thousand and one, two thousand and three, you know,
- 7:02Speaker 5: those areas it was kind of free for all mean,
- 7:04Speaker 5: some of those hits you see on some of these quarterbacks,
- 7:06Speaker 5: now get it.
- 7:07Speaker 2: You're in the problem, your eyes are fixed down field,
- 7:10Speaker 2: you're in a vulnerable position. Plus you're the most important
- 7:15Speaker 2: player on you know, whatever team it is. So I
- 7:17Speaker 2: get the behind the line of scrimmage protection when throwing,
- 7:20Speaker 2: but I agree when you're when you're running, you become
- 7:23Speaker 2: a runner. Now, I still believe that the quarterbacks should
- 7:26Speaker 2: have the ability to give themselves up.
- 7:27Speaker 4: It doesn't have to be said you can keep the slide.
- 7:30Speaker 2: Yeah, it doesn't even have to be a slide if
- 7:31Speaker 2: you go down the ground. But maybe they tweak the
- 7:33Speaker 2: rule to say you have to give yourself up with
- 7:37Speaker 2: at least five yards between you and the nearest defender.
- 7:40Speaker 4: So that's how you're going to adjudicate.
- 7:42Speaker 2: Well, I know, I know, but I'm just trying to
- 7:44Speaker 2: think of ways to still give the ability for the
- 7:47Speaker 2: quarterback to give themselves up and but still have to
- 7:51Speaker 2: give the defense some chance. Like you're going at full speed.
- 7:55Speaker 2: Quarterbacks going at full speed, and all of a sudden
- 7:57Speaker 2: he goes down, and like, how do you stop yourself?
- 7:59Speaker 2: Admit it?
- 8:00Speaker 4: You know, And that's why I say you can allow
- 8:02Speaker 4: the guy to slide, but you need to be a
- 8:04Speaker 4: little bit more lenient for the defenders when they make
- 8:06Speaker 4: contact on those.
- 8:07Speaker 5: Situations, not so much to the what als Shazier is
- 8:10Speaker 5: that the guy's name from Houston there? Oh no, you know,
- 8:13Speaker 5: but it's hard. I mean, you feel for the defenders.
- 8:15Speaker 5: I mean, like I said, like last show, so many
- 8:17Speaker 5: of the rules have been for offense and to try
- 8:19Speaker 5: to make these protect these quarterbacks, and you know, at
- 8:22Speaker 5: some point it has to come back a little bit
- 8:24Speaker 5: just to give them a little bit of leeway because
- 8:26Speaker 5: it's you know, it's all for the quarterbacks. Now, like
- 8:28Speaker 5: you know, Mahomes kind of knows what he's doing. He's
- 8:30Speaker 5: kind of taking advantage of it. So I'm a defense guy.
- 8:33Speaker 3: Like to say, I don't like that Mahomes takes advantage
- 8:35Speaker 3: of it. But I do like the protections on the
- 8:37Speaker 3: quarterback because I'm not here to watch your backup quarterback.
- 8:39Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 8:40Speaker 3: True, you know, I'm not here.
- 8:41Speaker 4: That's why it's there.
- 8:42Speaker 3: I'm not here in the the NFC Championship game on Sunday.
- 8:45Speaker 3: If Jayden Daniels gets hurt, We're all going to be bumped.
- 8:47Speaker 2: What I don't like is, you know, the defensive player
- 8:52Speaker 2: going in with We talked about this with arms to
- 8:55Speaker 2: the side, helmet for like a missile. He's going for
- 8:57Speaker 2: a hit rather than a tackle. Now I get it.
- 9:01Speaker 2: I forget what it might have been. Brady again talking
- 9:05Speaker 2: about listen, you want to jar the ball loose. You're
- 9:08Speaker 2: not gonna do that by just waving at the guy.
- 9:11Speaker 2: You need to hit him to try to jar the
- 9:12Speaker 2: ball loose. So it's a tough.
- 9:15Speaker 5: One unless you're trying to inflict punishment on the quarterback
- 9:18Speaker 5: and you know, get a hit on him. And I
- 9:19Speaker 5: mean those places we've talked about a lot. Those players
- 9:21Speaker 5: are so frustrating. When you got great coverage on a
- 9:24Speaker 5: third and twelve and it looks, oh, we got him,
- 9:26Speaker 5: we got him, and then you know he just squeaks out.
- 9:28Speaker 5: Those are those are really hard ones for the defense.
- 9:30Speaker 3: It's funny though, delictit to Brady talk about it, because
- 9:33Speaker 3: he talked about it, said something about it in the
- 9:35Speaker 3: game the other day. They called a design quarterback run
- 9:38Speaker 3: on like a third down and he's like, I don't
- 9:40Speaker 3: like those calls. I don't like running the quarterback. And
- 9:42Speaker 3: it's like, well, because you didn't run, Like yeah, this
- 9:46Speaker 3: is Jalen Hurts like you know whoever. It was like
- 9:48Speaker 3: that's part of his game. Like he's a running quarterback.
- 9:51Speaker 3: So every once in a while and third and four,
- 9:53Speaker 3: they're going to call a quarterback draw and he's gonna
- 9:55Speaker 3: run the ball. So I just I look at it though,
- 9:58Speaker 3: and I do agree with a lot of what Deuce
- 10:00Speaker 3: is saying and that you know, this is not going away.
- 10:03Speaker 3: Like these quarterbacks in college, they all are mobile, they
- 10:06Speaker 3: all can run. They all running offenses where that feature
- 10:10Speaker 3: their running ability. So it's all coming up. You know,
- 10:12Speaker 3: Jaden Daniels and Drake May and Caleb and those guys
- 10:15Speaker 3: are just the start. This is going to be Every
- 10:18Speaker 3: quarterback from here on out is going to have some
- 10:20Speaker 3: sort of running element. So this is gonna be a
- 10:22Speaker 3: big part of the game.
- 10:23Speaker 4: And it's just like another thing that's different. You know, Fred,
- 10:26Speaker 4: when you and I, you know, we're watching football when
- 10:29Speaker 4: we were younger, weather helmets, you know, I mean, everybody
- 10:32Speaker 4: ran the ball predominantly, but when they threw it, it
- 10:35Speaker 4: was almost all down the field. Yeah, you know, Stanley
- 10:38Speaker 4: Morgan averaged twenty yards a catch for like his career, right,
- 10:41Speaker 4: you know, did people say when Joe Montana started the
- 10:45Speaker 4: West Coast offense, and it was all dunk and dunk
- 10:47Speaker 4: and timing stuff that, well, that's that's not fair, Like
- 10:50Speaker 4: the defenders are too far back and they're just taking it.
- 10:54Speaker 4: It's just it's just it's another way to outthink, right,
- 10:56Speaker 4: what other with your opponents trying to do? And now
- 11:00Speaker 4: almost everybody has a quote unquote efficient passing game. I mean,
- 11:04Speaker 4: if you're under say sixty five percent completion percentage, you
- 11:07Speaker 4: had a really bad year, or you're one of the
- 11:10Speaker 4: few that actually does throw the ball downfield. Evan will
- 11:12Speaker 4: give you his epas and whatnot, but everybody does that now,
- 11:17Speaker 4: you know, like is that not fair? Like like, could
- 11:19Speaker 4: Joey Bosa go back? I always go back to that
- 11:21Speaker 4: Joey Bosa quote from the eighteen Divisional round. He's like
- 11:26Speaker 4: I kept getting there in a second and the ball
- 11:27Speaker 4: was already gone. Like is that not fair to the
- 11:29Speaker 4: defensive Linelan right that Brady was so good and so
- 11:33Speaker 4: smart and so well prepared that the ball was out
- 11:35Speaker 4: before any defenders could get to him. Right, of course not.
- 11:38Speaker 2: He was better than you, yep.
- 11:41Speaker 4: And as Evan said, like you know, Jalen hurts and
- 11:43Speaker 4: Jayden Daniels, They're going to be running all over the
- 11:46Speaker 4: place on Sunday. Both of those guys and.
- 11:48Speaker 2: The more slight quarterbacks run the risk of getting hurt more.
- 11:51Speaker 2: I mean, you know, Josh Allen has more bulk to him.
- 11:54Speaker 2: He invites contact and Lamar Jaccent has a different style
- 12:01Speaker 2: where he is able to, you know, for the most part,
- 12:04Speaker 2: avoid contact when he runs. So you're gonna have to
- 12:06Speaker 2: develop your style as a quarterback. But that's up to you.
- 12:08Speaker 2: And as Brady said, you need to learn to protect yourself.
- 12:12Speaker 2: Don't don't count on the rules to protect your protect yourself.
- 12:16Speaker 3: I think that's a really fascinating part for the Patriots
- 12:19Speaker 3: as we move forward because watching Lamar and watching Jayden
- 12:22Speaker 3: Daniels last weekend, I can help but think, you know,
- 12:25Speaker 3: Drake May got dinged up a lot, you know, as
- 12:27Speaker 3: a rookie running around and things like that, and those
- 12:30Speaker 3: two guys are two hundred pounds soaking west Lamar and
- 12:33Speaker 3: they're they're kind of perfectly fine, right, you know, And
- 12:35Speaker 3: I'm just like, how do you get to that point?
- 12:38Speaker 3: Because being able to run the ball is such an
- 12:40Speaker 3: advantage for Drake May that you can't just not do it,
- 12:43Speaker 3: you know, and you can't hide that part of his
- 12:45Speaker 3: game because you know, talking about Josh McDaniels. And I've
- 12:49Speaker 3: had some pushback from people saying, you know, they can't
- 12:51Speaker 3: run him like that, like it's gonna get him killed.
- 12:53Speaker 3: And I'm like, well, if you don't, then he's playing
- 12:56Speaker 3: left handed, like you're taking away one of his his
- 12:58Speaker 3: real attribute sets ever strength to his So maybe he
- 13:01Speaker 3: watches a little bit of Lamar Jackson and Jayden Daniels
- 13:04Speaker 3: and figures out how they kind of like dance around
- 13:06Speaker 3: contact and you know, stuff like that, because you have
- 13:09Speaker 3: to be able to do that, like you can't hide them.
- 13:12Speaker 2: Justin in New Hampshire says Hollywood Talk and no mention
- 13:14Speaker 2: of the coordinator hires off season pu and full effect.
- 13:18Speaker 2: It's funny, you know, because the news cycle is so
- 13:21Speaker 2: fast now to us it happened so long ago. But
- 13:25Speaker 2: he's Justin's right, we should be leading off with the
- 13:28Speaker 2: fact that Rabel has filled out his coordinator staff.
- 13:31Speaker 5: Yep, yep, I mean, I mean, I got a lot
- 13:34Speaker 5: of thoughts. I just you know, it's I think my
- 13:38Speaker 5: biggest takeaway from the last week is that these were
- 13:40Speaker 5: just obvious, easy moves and we're in a media market
- 13:44Speaker 5: where he can't.
- 13:45Speaker 6: Just have easy obvious moves.
- 13:46Speaker 5: You have to have you can't do that, you gotta
- 13:49Speaker 5: have you know, you know, and it's it's, well, you know,
- 13:52Speaker 5: Tom Brady carried Josh McDaniels and so he never did
- 13:55Speaker 5: anything here and then he never did anything elsewhere either.
- 13:58Speaker 5: And you know, meanwhile, it's like, this guy's a really
- 14:00Speaker 5: good football coach, and I'm excited to have him back.
- 14:03Speaker 5: I'm excited to see what he does with Drake. But
- 14:06Speaker 5: you know, just some of the narrative, it's just everybody,
- 14:08Speaker 5: you know, I think everything gets prefaced with like, well, yeah,
- 14:10Speaker 5: it was obviously the right choice, but let me tell
- 14:12Speaker 5: you all the reasons why I hate it.
- 14:14Speaker 2: I mean, that's it takes nowadays. Did you post your yes? Yes?
- 14:18Speaker 2: So I think I would suggest people read Evans analysis
- 14:22Speaker 2: of mcdaniels's offenses and he I think he makes a
- 14:26Speaker 2: good case of what he did with Cam Newton. Now, listen,
- 14:29Speaker 2: Cam Newton at that point couldn't throw the ball, he
- 14:31Speaker 2: wasn't at his prime. But I think Josh McDaniels did
- 14:35Speaker 2: some things and the numbers reflect that that were positive.
- 14:39Speaker 2: With a lesser quarterback. Now he's got a quarterback who
- 14:42Speaker 2: can throw and run. So let's see, let's let's, you know,
- 14:47Speaker 2: port some of those numbers over to May, and I
- 14:50Speaker 2: think we should see some positive results.
- 14:52Speaker 3: I just don't think.
- 14:53Speaker 6: Josh is rigid.
- 14:54Speaker 5: You know, I have the feeling that he's willing to adjust,
- 14:56Speaker 5: and you know, I think that's the way the signs
- 14:59Speaker 5: are pointing towards. And I mean that's a lot of
- 15:00Speaker 5: a lot of the reporting is right now that it's
- 15:02Speaker 5: going to be about Drake May. You know, yesterday you
- 15:04Speaker 5: heard Chicago's new coach talking about it's going to be
- 15:07Speaker 5: about Caleb Williams. We're going to we're tearing it down
- 15:09Speaker 5: to the studs and we're going to build it up
- 15:10Speaker 5: around him. And I hope and I think that that's
- 15:12Speaker 5: what Josh is going to do for Drake as well.
- 15:14Speaker 3: Yeah, you just look at that Cam offense in twenty twenty,
- 15:17Speaker 3: and you know Cam ran in one hundred and thirty
- 15:19Speaker 3: seven times. Drake May is not going to run it
- 15:20Speaker 3: one hundred and thirty seven times. But a lot of
- 15:23Speaker 3: the schemes that they were running, the RPOs and things
- 15:25Speaker 3: like that are all right there on the film. In
- 15:27Speaker 3: twenty twenty of Josh McDaniels doing the stuff that we
- 15:30Speaker 3: all look at Buffalo and Josh Allen and say, why
- 15:33Speaker 3: not with our guy? Right, you know, why can't we
- 15:35Speaker 3: do some of the stuff they're doing with Joe Brady?
- 15:38Speaker 3: And they did it all in twenty twenty with Cam,
- 15:41Speaker 3: so you know, you bring that stuff in. He has
- 15:43Speaker 3: the traditional offense that it has been successful at different times.
- 15:47Speaker 3: But I don't look at Josh McDaniels and say he's
- 15:50Speaker 3: going to try to turn Drake May into Tom Brady.
- 15:52Speaker 3: I think he is going to do some things that
- 15:54Speaker 3: are different and are really not that different for him
- 15:59Speaker 3: going back to the Cam year, So I'm excited about it.
- 16:02Speaker 3: I hear a lot of stuff, you know, kind of
- 16:05Speaker 3: along the lines of Deuce about Josh McDaniels, and I
- 16:09Speaker 3: don't necessarily agree with any of it. Like I think
- 16:11Speaker 3: that he's one of those guys that has a lot
- 16:14Speaker 3: of different ways that he's called offenses, a lot of
- 16:17Speaker 3: different things that he has shown offensively that he can do,
- 16:21Speaker 3: and hopefully the Cam offense is like just a starting point,
- 16:24Speaker 3: you know, hopefully they can expand on those elements. But
- 16:27Speaker 3: to do that in a season where they basically didn't
- 16:30Speaker 3: have a training camp because of COVID and didn't have
- 16:32Speaker 3: a preseason. There were no preseason games that year. Cam
- 16:35Speaker 3: signs in July and they were up and running by
- 16:38Speaker 3: Week one with an option package that beat the Dolphins
- 16:41Speaker 3: and the opener there with Cam Newton, I mean that
- 16:44Speaker 3: was impressive like that, that's hard to do, yep.
- 16:48Speaker 2: And then of course defense Terrell Williams.
- 16:50Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, Well, Evan and I were talking a bit
- 16:53Speaker 5: about him. I mean, he's been available for a long time.
- 16:54Speaker 5: He's a long time defensive line coach. You know, I
- 16:58Speaker 5: think what they added to his title his last year
- 17:00Speaker 5: with Rabel, but I think he's a little bit of
- 17:01Speaker 5: an unknown commodity. And that's what Evan and I were
- 17:03Speaker 5: kind of talking schematically of, you know, the Belichick tree
- 17:07Speaker 5: and even what they ran last year, it always kind
- 17:09Speaker 5: of felt in line with that. But these guys in
- 17:11Speaker 5: Tennessee and and you know what they were doing in Detroit,
- 17:13Speaker 5: it's it's a little different. It's a little bit more
- 17:15Speaker 5: like these Foeman fronts get upfield, which you know, we
- 17:18Speaker 5: both were kind of saying, it's kind of appealing of
- 17:20Speaker 5: just playing fast, getting after it, not trying violent.
- 17:23Speaker 6: You know, yeah, I like I like that too, But.
- 17:25Speaker 5: I just I think I think he's a little bit
- 17:26Speaker 5: of an unknown commodity right now, to be honest.
- 17:28Speaker 2: That's but I think it's just if you just focus
- 17:31Speaker 2: on defensive line. I don't know who the defensive line
- 17:33Speaker 2: coach will be. We don't have one yet, but I'm
- 17:36Speaker 2: sure he'll have input in there. And that's good news
- 17:39Speaker 2: for key On White, I think, you know, because it
- 17:41Speaker 2: sounds like he might have been unhappy with not just
- 17:45Speaker 2: his role, but maybe how he was being coached. I
- 17:47Speaker 2: don't know, but obviously if Barmore comes back, having him
- 17:54Speaker 2: in the in the room, I think can only help
- 17:56Speaker 2: those guys.
- 17:57Speaker 5: I mean, I'm with you on Barber. I just I
- 17:58Speaker 5: still don't know where Keon White fits. It's kind the
- 18:00Speaker 5: same thing for two years. I just I don't know
- 18:01Speaker 5: in any kind of defense where he's a three down
- 18:05Speaker 5: kind of player, you know. I mean, I think he's
- 18:06Speaker 5: a good interior pass rusher on you know, sub packages,
- 18:09Speaker 5: but you know, if they're going to run a four
- 18:11Speaker 5: man front, I don't mean.
- 18:13Speaker 2: On White can be the guy.
- 18:14Speaker 5: I don't think he's meant to be the guy, which
- 18:16Speaker 5: is unfortunate because I mean I do think he's he's
- 18:18Speaker 5: got some juice and you know.
- 18:20Speaker 2: Some use funds coming out of college. In college, he
- 18:23Speaker 2: wasn't the guy, right, Yeah, So why do we think
- 18:26Speaker 2: that he's going to go to a higher level and
- 18:28Speaker 2: all of a sudden become.
- 18:29Speaker 4: The guy now?
- 18:31Speaker 2: But I mean probably it does happen, but it's happened,
- 18:34Speaker 2: it's not a lot. Well. I mean, Seema was a
- 18:37Speaker 2: Hall of Famer, but he still wasn't a high sat
- 18:39Speaker 2: volume guy.
- 18:40Speaker 4: Oh no, no, no, yeah, if you're talking about pass rushers,
- 18:43Speaker 4: it just run. I misunderstood.
- 18:45Speaker 5: Yeah, but I would say, you know, with the bar
- 18:47Speaker 5: more of it all, like if they were to go
- 18:48Speaker 5: more to you know, just a four man front, like
- 18:51Speaker 5: easy fit like barmore, get upfield like go you know,
- 18:53Speaker 5: like that was the big thing with him, to learn
- 18:55Speaker 5: him to stop the run and the two gap and
- 18:56Speaker 5: to do all the stuff that the Bill defense asked
- 18:59Speaker 5: him to do. But he's an example on the other
- 19:01Speaker 5: end of the spectrum for me, where yeah, that's that's
- 19:02Speaker 5: an easy fit for me. But at the same token,
- 19:05Speaker 5: who are your defensive ends? I mean everyone's pointing out
- 19:08Speaker 5: on Twitter, you know, the big wide nine guy, you know,
- 19:10Speaker 5: lining up with hand down, just going after the thing.
- 19:12Speaker 6: They never really had those guys, you know.
- 19:14Speaker 5: I mean, let's make me Mark Anderson going way back
- 19:16Speaker 5: as somebody who you know, was kind of that come
- 19:18Speaker 5: on and you're just gonna put your hand down and
- 19:19Speaker 5: go rush the quarterback.
- 19:20Speaker 2: But Chandler Jones that they don't have.
- 19:22Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, I mean that's close, sure, but they just
- 19:24Speaker 5: don't have those guys on the roster right now. So
- 19:26Speaker 5: that's a big question I have of what direction are
- 19:28Speaker 5: you going to go in? And are they going to,
- 19:31Speaker 5: like Paul's thing, kind of clean house a little bit
- 19:33Speaker 5: and re establish the personnel, or are they gonna do
- 19:36Speaker 5: what you know, We're gonna just try to see what
- 19:38Speaker 5: we have and and you know, do do our scheme
- 19:41Speaker 5: towards what we have right now?
- 19:43Speaker 3: Yeah, just watching back in twenty three, and I watched
- 19:46Speaker 3: a little bit of twenty two as well, because I
- 19:48Speaker 3: was surprised that they weren't playing more three four just
- 19:50Speaker 3: knowing Rabel's background with the Patriots and as a player
- 19:53Speaker 3: and everything.
- 19:54Speaker 5: And under Cornell and and yeah and danps too, those.
- 19:57Speaker 3: Are right, and they were playing they are playing even
- 20:00Speaker 3: four man down, you know, overfronts, overloads, like all those
- 20:04Speaker 3: types of things that those types of defenses do, and
- 20:07Speaker 3: they get after it. Like that's the one thing that
- 20:10Speaker 3: I think really was exciting to me watching even in
- 20:13Speaker 3: twenty three where they didn't have a good season, like
- 20:15Speaker 3: that defense was flying around like they were competing, they
- 20:18Speaker 3: were violent, they were getting up the field. Now it's
- 20:20Speaker 3: a little bit boom or busts right, Like they'll make
- 20:22Speaker 3: a play behind the line of scrimmage and then they'll
- 20:24Speaker 3: give up a chunk run because they're all up the field,
- 20:27Speaker 3: and you know, if you let it go, you let
- 20:29Speaker 3: it go. But I do like the idea, and we
- 20:31Speaker 3: were talking about this earlier, dude, with the fact that
- 20:36Speaker 3: on early downs, if you're always penetrating, now you pass
- 20:40Speaker 3: rush on early downs as well as it's much easier
- 20:42Speaker 3: and more seamless, Whereas in a two gapping defense you
- 20:45Speaker 3: kind of have to read, okay, is it a run,
- 20:47Speaker 3: is it a pass? And now we have to react,
- 20:49Speaker 3: Whereas with this defense, it seems like they're just gonna
- 20:52Speaker 3: let guys team off a little bit, and whether it's
- 20:54Speaker 3: run or pass, we're just gonna try to make plays.
- 20:57Speaker 2: You just have to be careful because offenses aren't stupid
- 21:00Speaker 2: and they have you know, whether it's a blitzpeed or whatever.
- 21:03Speaker 2: If it's a straight up pass rush, it's very easily
- 21:06Speaker 2: beatable these days, you know, so you have to kind
- 21:08Speaker 2: of mix it up. You have to confuse the quarterback
- 21:11Speaker 2: depending on who the guy is. You want to not
- 21:14Speaker 2: you want to keep him in the pocket as opposed
- 21:16Speaker 2: to letting him out, you know. So you just have
- 21:18Speaker 2: to be careful with how you're doing it. And it's
- 21:21Speaker 2: not one size fits all every game.
- 21:23Speaker 3: Yeah, and you know Shane Bone is not here, so
- 21:25Speaker 3: he was the one calling the plays in Tennessee over
- 21:27Speaker 3: the last couple of years. Uh, Terrell Williams, I don't
- 21:30Speaker 3: think has ever called plays as a defensive coordinator. So
- 21:33Speaker 3: I'm interested to see how that shakes out. Like, is
- 21:36Speaker 3: Rabel going to have influence in calling plays potentially, you know,
- 21:39Speaker 3: with Josh running the offense, like he doesn't have to
- 21:42Speaker 3: have as much of an eye probably on what's going
- 21:44Speaker 3: on offensively. Uh, you know Stretch will be here to
- 21:47Speaker 3: run the clock for Paul, right.
- 21:48Speaker 4: So like you're looking forward to meet Stretch.
- 21:50Speaker 3: Yeah, so maybe maybe Rabel is going to be really
- 21:55Speaker 3: involved in hands on with the defense, because that's a
- 21:58Speaker 3: tough part of this is you know, he's the only
- 21:59Speaker 3: guy and Terrell Williams who doesn't have experience calling plays
- 22:03Speaker 3: in the role that he's going to be in, So
- 22:05Speaker 3: how that shakes out is still important. I think he's
- 22:08Speaker 3: gonna be able to run the front, and he's gonna
- 22:10Speaker 3: be able to run the defensive line. But does he
- 22:12Speaker 3: know the secondary? Does he know coverage? Does he know
- 22:14Speaker 3: how to marry it up with the back end?
- 22:16Speaker 2: Like?
- 22:16Speaker 3: Does he know all those things? It remains to be seen.
- 22:19Speaker 2: And then of course rounding it out, Jeremy Springer is
- 22:22Speaker 2: the one holdover at the coordinator level, and he'll be back.
- 22:27Speaker 2: They had a good year special teams in an overall
- 22:30Speaker 2: bad year for the team, so uh.
- 22:34Speaker 3: Well it was okay, they're middle of the pack.
- 22:36Speaker 2: Yeah yeah, But I guess they saw you know, Rabel
- 22:39Speaker 2: must have saw something in him or was told of
- 22:41Speaker 2: things that he liked to hear.
- 22:44Speaker 4: I think there's a connection with Rabel and the assistant
- 22:47Speaker 4: Tom Quinn. Tom Quinn, I think they had a connection.
- 22:50Speaker 4: I think that probably was the the impetus there to
- 22:53Speaker 4: keep it as is. I mean, they had a pretty
- 22:55Speaker 4: uneven season and special chance they had kicks blocked, turns allowed.
- 23:00Speaker 5: I don't know what PFF grade was, PFF high.
- 23:03Speaker 4: PFF had him too. Yeah, everybody else said middle of
- 23:06Speaker 4: a package.
- 23:07Speaker 3: Well, like in terms of efficiency and great is obviously
- 23:10Speaker 3: two different things. But I I would say with their
- 23:13Speaker 3: special teams, tom Quinn being involved still, it kind of
- 23:17Speaker 3: feels like Tom Quinn was Verbel's guy to coach special teams. Anyways,
- 23:21Speaker 3: and so Quinnon probably vouched for Springer and said, you know,
- 23:25Speaker 3: this guy did a good job. We should keep them.
- 23:27Speaker 3: And so they're going to keep the nucleus together there.
- 23:29Speaker 5: Evan and I were laughing though, we were talking about
- 23:31Speaker 5: the stretch guy, and I said, I'm like, imagine if
- 23:33Speaker 5: like Paul just loves this stretch guy, Like this stretch
- 23:35Speaker 5: guy is just like killing every situational thing, like no, no,
- 23:38Speaker 5: they're pulling out like these like random weird like they
- 23:41Speaker 5: took a penalty but.
- 23:42Speaker 6: It was the right thing to do, and balls like
- 23:44Speaker 6: this guy's the best.
- 23:45Speaker 2: We're all.
- 23:47Speaker 4: It's like impossible, so you could hire him. Professions thirty
- 23:52Speaker 4: thirty three seconds left, you know, first and ten from
- 23:55Speaker 4: the twelve. No need to spike here, right, yeah, right,
- 23:58Speaker 4: I agree, you're.
- 23:59Speaker 6: Just sitting there jump no notes, notes kids.
- 24:04Speaker 4: This stretch guy is my favorite.
- 24:05Speaker 2: So uh internal. We had a chance to sit down
- 24:08Speaker 2: with the three coordinators this morning. Were you guys there?
- 24:10Speaker 2: When they did that, we briefly said.
- 24:12Speaker 4: Hello, We did not go in for the interviews.
- 24:15Speaker 2: So you didn't get a chance to listen to any
- 24:17Speaker 2: of the questions or answer.
- 24:18Speaker 4: No, no, no.
- 24:18Speaker 5: We were too much pressure on no socks.
- 24:20Speaker 6: We don't, you know, we want to let him do
- 24:22Speaker 6: his thing.
- 24:22Speaker 4: Yeah, okay, I did help, and I know you did
- 24:27Speaker 4: as well.
- 24:28Speaker 7: Well.
- 24:28Speaker 2: I wanted One of the questions I submitted for Josh
- 24:31Speaker 2: is what did you take away from your visits to
- 24:33Speaker 2: these colleges?
- 24:34Speaker 6: Was that confirmed? Did that really happen with Paul?
- 24:36Speaker 3: And with Paul and the thing you made up?
- 24:39Speaker 2: You mean, oh, oh, you know, so I just, you know,
- 24:42Speaker 2: I don't know if it got to ask, so I haven't.
- 24:44Speaker 2: But those will be on patriot dot com today and
- 24:47Speaker 2: other platforms.
- 24:48Speaker 6: Now I'm gonna nerd out for a second.
- 24:50Speaker 5: But like just getting the chance to see Rabel and
- 24:52Speaker 5: McDaniel's like back in the in the Elvis and the
- 24:54Speaker 5: Patriots stuff, I'm like, all right, let's go, let's go.
- 24:56Speaker 3: We got our boys back.
- 24:57Speaker 5: We got our guys a little but well, you know,
- 25:01Speaker 5: we saw Rabel the other morning, comes in with you know,
- 25:03Speaker 5: his his vable outfit which no, you know he's got
- 25:05Speaker 5: a style the windbreaker with no sleeves and the tight
- 25:07Speaker 5: shirt underneath, but you know, had the had the elvis
- 25:10Speaker 5: on and yeah, it was back home, buddy, back home,
- 25:13Speaker 5: welcome home.
- 25:13Speaker 3: Talking a little fourth down with Josh for two seconds.
- 25:17Speaker 3: But you know he's he's ready to go. It's good
- 25:21Speaker 3: to see him.
- 25:21Speaker 6: I say, thought we should.
- 25:22Speaker 5: Josh looked great, he's lost some weight.
- 25:25Speaker 2: He turned down and shave ready to go. Yeah, yep,
- 25:29Speaker 2: all right, so exciting times here and now I guess
- 25:33Speaker 2: the next step is to fill out the rest of
- 25:35Speaker 2: the assistance. Now that you have your coordinators, I'm sure
- 25:38Speaker 2: they'll have input on who they hire.
- 25:41Speaker 4: Ah, your line coach, right, biggest, biggest hire. It's a
- 25:45Speaker 4: big hire.
- 25:46Speaker 2: It's a big higher What is what assistant or position
- 25:51Speaker 2: coach is filled? Right now?
- 25:52Speaker 5: Do we have any There was a report of a
- 25:54Speaker 5: running back.
- 25:56Speaker 3: It was with the Jets this past season. He apparently
- 26:01Speaker 3: the report is that he's gonna have the same role
- 26:03Speaker 3: with the Patriots. So he's going to coach running backs
- 26:05Speaker 3: with the Patriots, but as of right now, there's some
- 26:08Speaker 3: you know, Twitter rumor type stuff that I don't think.
- 26:10Speaker 2: Is so the only position right now reportedly filled is
- 26:15Speaker 2: running back.
- 26:15Speaker 6: Yeah, reportally Yeah yeah. I mean, I don't know.
- 26:18Speaker 5: Maybe we'll see how these games go this weekend and
- 26:20Speaker 5: maybe you'll get another florry, but I assume they're going
- 26:22Speaker 5: to get the coordinators in position. And now these guys
- 26:24Speaker 5: are interviewing right and now is when it really starts
- 26:26Speaker 5: to come together.
- 26:27Speaker 3: I just think it's refreshing that clearly the because of
- 26:31Speaker 3: the types of coaches these guys are, they all have connections,
- 26:34Speaker 3: and they all have like people lined up for a
- 26:37Speaker 3: lot of these positions ahead of time. And it's not
- 26:40Speaker 3: like last year where they interviewed twelve different offensive coordinator
- 26:43Speaker 3: candidates and you know, had guys kind of leave them
- 26:46Speaker 3: at the altar a little bit there with Nick Kaylee
- 26:48Speaker 3: and stuff like that. Like this has all been pretty seamless.
- 26:51Speaker 3: And Terrell William's clearly a Rabel guy being with him
- 26:54Speaker 3: in Tennessee, and you know, we all know about Josh McDaniels,
- 26:58Speaker 3: but it just feels like it's, you know, you have
- 27:00Speaker 3: that networking ability with this group, and I think that
- 27:03Speaker 3: you're going to see some familiar faces on the on
- 27:06Speaker 3: the staff, especially offensively, Like I'm sure Josh is calling
- 27:10Speaker 3: all the whole band to get it back together.
- 27:12Speaker 5: I wonder is a lot of the guys that were
- 27:13Speaker 5: here earlier that maybe some of the ones that went
- 27:15Speaker 5: to the Raiders with them they come back. Yeah, I
- 27:17Speaker 5: think so, I don't know's you know.
- 27:19Speaker 3: I would assume Bohart agree Micklembardy. I mean if I
- 27:24Speaker 3: would call Carmen Bricelo yesterday, like please come back and
- 27:28Speaker 3: coach the offensive line. So he's with the Giants, he's
- 27:31Speaker 3: their offensive line.
- 27:32Speaker 2: So do you have to give him a promotion to
- 27:34Speaker 2: get him over here? Is the under cont They don't.
- 27:36Speaker 4: The other team wouldn't have to give you permission, right
- 27:38Speaker 4: unless it's a promotion.
- 27:39Speaker 3: Yeah, so that that will be interesting. I don't usually
- 27:43Speaker 3: they don't count like run game coordinator or something like
- 27:46Speaker 3: that as the promotion. It's just coordinator would be the promotion.
- 27:50Speaker 3: So I who they hire for offensive line coach to
- 27:53Speaker 3: me is the biggest hire left.
- 27:54Speaker 2: Yeah, that's asat one. I agree, that's a critical one.
- 27:57Speaker 2: It's a critical one because those guys have to Dante
- 28:00Speaker 2: play together.
- 28:01Speaker 5: I wish I know, well, I mean just I mean
- 28:02Speaker 5: I said it the other day. I mean, this is
- 28:03Speaker 5: I've been here, what five seasons now, There's been a
- 28:05Speaker 5: different offensive line coach every single year I've been here.
- 28:08Speaker 5: I mean Michael and Winu came here twenty twenty. He's
- 28:10Speaker 5: had a different o line coach every single year he's
- 28:12Speaker 5: been here. They got to find a way to break that,
- 28:14Speaker 5: and I mean, hopefully this year they land with that
- 28:16Speaker 5: offensive or offensive line coach that can stick around and
- 28:20Speaker 5: you know, really build something. That's what I was hoping
- 28:21Speaker 5: last year with Peters, that you know that this would
- 28:24Speaker 5: be the guy and you know he's a young guy
- 28:25Speaker 5: and it's getting his.
- 28:26Speaker 6: Chance, and you know, it didn't work out, pedigree and
- 28:28Speaker 6: all that.
- 28:29Speaker 5: It's crazy, though, the Bengals hire both the offensive line
- 28:31Speaker 5: coach and the defensive line coach from the Patriots, both
- 28:34Speaker 5: who you know, were kind of under a lot of
- 28:35Speaker 5: you know, flak this year for not great performance. But
- 28:38Speaker 5: they they jumped right on them. So I guess we'll
- 28:39Speaker 5: see how the boy Sweet Lou went to the Colts.
- 28:42Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, it was. It's interesting that you didn't get
- 28:46Speaker 3: hired by Ben Johnson. I know there was a big
- 28:48Speaker 3: connection there between the two of them going back to Miami,
- 28:51Speaker 3: but it seemed like Dennis Allen's head coaching experience is
- 28:54Speaker 3: what put him over the top. To give him to
- 28:57Speaker 3: to Ben Johnson.
- 28:58Speaker 4: I think that's a good move. Yeah, I mean sweet
- 29:00Speaker 4: Little would have been too. I'm not saying he wouldn't
- 29:02Speaker 4: have been. I mean they had a terrible year. I'm
- 29:05Speaker 4: not sugarcoating, and clearly, you know, you know, he didn't
- 29:10Speaker 4: have any answers. I know it's largely on personnel, but
- 29:13Speaker 4: it seems like they have better personnel than those results indicated.
- 29:17Speaker 5: Strange and that happens though a guy was very respected
- 29:19Speaker 5: and you know, had a couple of good years and
- 29:22Speaker 5: you know, and that wasn't like it was this complex
- 29:24Speaker 5: crazy defen.
- 29:24Speaker 4: I mean it was they kind of do what they
- 29:26Speaker 4: really really struggled all year.
- 29:27Speaker 3: I hate when that happens because it's it's so clear
- 29:31Speaker 3: that Zach Taylor needed a head to roll for the
- 29:33Speaker 3: fact that they didn't make the playoffs, and he somehow,
- 29:36Speaker 3: you know, skated and didn't lose his job. So it's
- 29:39Speaker 3: like someone's got to pay for the fact that we
- 29:40Speaker 3: missed the playoffs with Joe Burrow and it ends up
- 29:43Speaker 3: being a really good coach.
- 29:44Speaker 4: Someone was forget who I heard it, but you know
- 29:46Speaker 4: talking about like changing coordinators, and you know, you know,
- 29:50Speaker 4: the Eagles changed their coordinators, and like the Eagles fired
- 29:53Speaker 4: their coordinators and moved on to two different ones. That's
- 29:56Speaker 4: not the same thing.
- 29:57Speaker 2: It's like.
- 30:00Speaker 4: The Lions losing Ben Jonson and Aaron Glenn was the premise.
- 30:03Speaker 4: You know, you don't know, you can lose your coordinate.
- 30:05Speaker 4: But they didn't lose him.
- 30:06Speaker 2: On purpose, right, They wanted to keep those They wanted
- 30:08Speaker 2: to keep them.
- 30:09Speaker 5: In the defensive lane. Coach, I mean, really interesting to see.
- 30:11Speaker 5: Whats gonna happen to Detroit next year?
- 30:12Speaker 4: Well, I think the offensive coordinator is going to be
- 30:14Speaker 4: the guy that wean Yeah, I can't close. Yeah, that's
- 30:19Speaker 4: the chance. It seems like that one would be because
- 30:22Speaker 4: that's the one that got the Patriots in last year.
- 30:25Speaker 2: Get your fingers out, because that windows really fast.
- 30:28Speaker 5: Well, I mean, they're really.
- 30:28Speaker 4: Talented team that windows not closed.
- 30:30Speaker 6: I mean, Detroit, you got all the pie done.
- 30:34Speaker 4: I'm okay, yeah, but you're very consistent with this. You're
- 30:38Speaker 4: not just like you hate Dan Campbell. I think he
- 30:40Speaker 4: has no I don't hate I liked him. I don't
- 30:45Speaker 4: ever thinks it's all about motivation, and I think you're
- 30:48Speaker 4: very consistent. This is not criticism at all.
- 30:50Speaker 2: So what's my what? What's my motivation? According to Paul Parillo.
- 30:54Speaker 4: Jared Goff had a bad game in a big stage,
- 30:56Speaker 4: so he can never recover from.
- 30:57Speaker 2: That, right right, thank you? He was never that good.
- 31:01Speaker 4: Let me know who else you need me to analyze?
- 31:03Speaker 2: He and he and uh, what's his name? From the Vikings?
- 31:07Speaker 2: Donald Donald is a reason.
- 31:09Speaker 4: Yeah, but Donald didn't have like six good years in
- 31:11Speaker 4: a row like Donald had six good weeks in a
- 31:14Speaker 4: row and then he turned into a pumpkin now. And plus,
- 31:18Speaker 4: I don't think that Donald is done either. I think
- 31:20Speaker 4: he'll come back next year. Now. Will he play as
- 31:22Speaker 4: well as he did under Kevin O'Connell. Probably not. They
- 31:25Speaker 4: had clearly that's at least partly due to a great system,
- 31:29Speaker 4: justin Jeffers.
- 31:29Speaker 2: That's as as the Lions Jordan Adison.
- 31:32Speaker 4: These guys are kind of good.
- 31:33Speaker 6: A lot of talent there though.
- 31:33Speaker 4: I mean that's but that team is too good to
- 31:35Speaker 4: just fall apart. I'm not telling you they're gonna win
- 31:38Speaker 4: the super Bowl next year, but they're not going to
- 31:40Speaker 4: fall apart.
- 31:41Speaker 5: I don't know what their free agent class looks like.
- 31:43Speaker 4: A lot of guys now, no key guys that are
- 31:46Speaker 4: that are free They have some role guys here and there.
- 31:50Speaker 6: I know there.
- 31:50Speaker 5: I just can't say his name on Zorki. Some of
- 31:53Speaker 5: the defensive lineman, I don't know, but he's you know,
- 31:55Speaker 5: just having played under our new defensive coordinator.
- 31:57Speaker 4: I mean there's a chance that the team that they
- 31:59Speaker 4: put on the field there's a lot better just by
- 32:01Speaker 4: pure health. I mean, they lost so many guys.
- 32:07Speaker 2: Prediction time will tribute to have a full back this
- 32:10Speaker 2: year on the roster, Yes.
- 32:13Speaker 4: Yes, Will it be like a traditional true fullback or
- 32:17Speaker 4: will be Jahean Bell playing fullback?
- 32:20Speaker 3: That could go either way. I Jacob Johnson's just kicking
- 32:24Speaker 3: around waiting for the phone call at this point. But
- 32:26Speaker 3: I I would say that there's a couple of guys
- 32:28Speaker 3: in this draft to that boom that play full back
- 32:32Speaker 3: that not skataboo but that or maybe more on your
- 32:35Speaker 3: your side of things, Paul, that can catch them and
- 32:40Speaker 3: be a little bit more athletic at that position. Uh,
- 32:44Speaker 3: the kid from Alabama who I'm blanking.
- 32:45Speaker 2: On more athletic than Scataboo.
- 32:48Speaker 3: Well, skaboos are running.
- 32:49Speaker 2: I know he's pretty athletic, Yeah, but he.
- 32:51Speaker 3: Doesn't play full back.
- 32:52Speaker 2: It's like five eight he could, yeah, but he goes
- 32:55Speaker 2: about thirty eight or he's not tall squad.
- 33:01Speaker 3: But I just coder with some respect with Josh.
- 33:04Speaker 5: I mean, in response to I love when you hate
- 33:07Speaker 5: your question Fred that you had for Matt for Josh
- 33:10Speaker 5: was you know, did he evolve a little bit and
- 33:12Speaker 5: does he still see the full back the same way
- 33:13Speaker 5: he did? And I'd say blocking tight end too as
- 33:15Speaker 5: part of that. I mean, maybe it's the same player,
- 33:17Speaker 5: but has he evolved does Drake May's potential make him think?
- 33:21Speaker 4: I'm curious to see how it looks because now you know,
- 33:23Speaker 4: when you guys are all talking about the different things,
- 33:25Speaker 4: I would agree that he has been very flexible when
- 33:30Speaker 4: it comes to game plans. I think that Bill was
- 33:32Speaker 4: a game plan guy to his core, and Josh did
- 33:36Speaker 4: a really good job of as Evan pointed out with
- 33:40Speaker 4: Cam Newton as the example, but he did a really
- 33:42Speaker 4: good job of that throughout his time with the Patriots,
- 33:46Speaker 4: of being able to win games in a variety of
- 33:48Speaker 4: different ways with different plans and different you know, focuses
- 33:52Speaker 4: with the offense. I'm less convinced that he is as
- 33:57Speaker 4: flexible with his system and that I'm really going to
- 34:00Speaker 4: be interested in. I kind of wish we had a
- 34:02Speaker 4: chance to maybe have a little small talk with.
- 34:04Speaker 6: Him to you hugged him. Maybe less hugging.
- 34:09Speaker 3: Let's keep that off the air, let's keep that off
- 34:11Speaker 3: Welcome back.
- 34:12Speaker 4: Well, I mean there's that's that is now two coaches
- 34:15Speaker 4: that I've hugged publicly now in the last two weeks
- 34:17Speaker 4: of the Ills. It's not given my back, Like, wow,
- 34:23Speaker 4: they actually called me Sunshine dot com.
- 34:25Speaker 2: I know.
- 34:26Speaker 3: There's just so many advantages to the full back from
- 34:30Speaker 3: a blocking perspective in the run game that I mean,
- 34:33Speaker 3: I'm a big fullback guy, so I love the full back.
- 34:35Speaker 3: But there's just so many different advantages that that brings
- 34:38Speaker 3: to the table that I think are are good advantages
- 34:42Speaker 3: that go beyond just all we're just going to run
- 34:44Speaker 3: it downhill at people and stuff like that. I mean,
- 34:47Speaker 3: he's far from the only guy that that utilizes a
- 34:49Speaker 3: full back that's a great offensive coach. I mean, the
- 34:52Speaker 3: Rams do it, the forty nine ers do it, the
- 34:55Speaker 3: Dolphins do it. Like all those trees that we all
- 34:57Speaker 3: are obsessed with, they all do it too.
- 34:59Speaker 5: So you think, uh, I just thought of this throwing
- 35:02Speaker 5: it off for the group, you know, with you know,
- 35:03Speaker 5: when Brady was here and you put the full back in,
- 35:06Speaker 5: they're going to run the ball. But do you think
- 35:08Speaker 5: that like Drake May's ability to run the ball as well,
- 35:11Speaker 5: Like it just gives them a little bit more variation
- 35:13Speaker 5: on that where you know, you know, you're if the
- 35:15Speaker 5: fullbacks out there with Brady, he's probably handing off to
- 35:17Speaker 5: the running then they're you know, running ball or whatever.
- 35:19Speaker 5: But you know, with Drake, I don't know. It just
- 35:21Speaker 5: gives you a little bit more options to play with.
- 35:22Speaker 5: I feel like with the full back maybe you could
- 35:24Speaker 5: be a little bit less predictable with.
- 35:26Speaker 4: But they're gonna run it well unless I'll see you
- 35:29Speaker 4: with the full back like Yaka Johnson, they're gonna run
- 35:32Speaker 4: it right. If it's James Devlin, they're going to run it.
- 35:34Speaker 4: Now if they have a guy like Evan like you know,
- 35:38Speaker 4: some of these more versatile guys, the Chargers, I would
- 35:41Speaker 4: put in that category. They have a couple of different
- 35:44Speaker 4: size and ship to those guys and the Ravens guy
- 35:47Speaker 4: is a defensive lineman, but he's a behemoth. Yeah, he's great,
- 35:52Speaker 4: and they're gonna run, and you kind of know the
- 35:53Speaker 4: Ravens are gonna run anyway.
- 35:55Speaker 3: But they even though they ran it a lot with
- 35:57Speaker 3: the fullback on the field that they're they're action passing
- 36:00Speaker 3: was so effective with the full back on the field too,
- 36:03Speaker 3: And that's a big part of it as well as
- 36:06Speaker 3: just you can mimic the same run plays. You know,
- 36:08Speaker 3: the blocking schemes look exactly the same to the defense,
- 36:11Speaker 3: and that's what pulls guys out of passing lanes and
- 36:14Speaker 3: displaces defenders to open play action. And some of the
- 36:17Speaker 3: cam stuff that they did in twenty twenty where it
- 36:19Speaker 3: was just Cam and the full back and the backfield,
- 36:22Speaker 3: now the full back is like a lead blocker for
- 36:24Speaker 3: a quarterback run or something like that. I thought those
- 36:27Speaker 3: are really nice and creative, Like now you're all sorts
- 36:29Speaker 3: of numbers advantages to the play side because you have
- 36:32Speaker 3: a lead blocker and then Cam's plus one, Like, you
- 36:34Speaker 3: have all sorts of advantages when you do stuff like that.
- 36:37Speaker 3: So I just I can't imagine that a Josh McDaniel's
- 36:40Speaker 3: offense won't have a full back. I think that's a.
- 36:42Speaker 2: Lock Mark and fall. River writes in at podcasts at
- 36:47Speaker 2: Patriots dot Com he's excited about the new hires, he
- 36:51Speaker 2: has questions on both sides of the ball. Mike, my
- 36:53Speaker 2: memory of the Titans defense is Jeffrey Simmons being a centerpiece,
- 36:57Speaker 2: aside from the questions about his health. Do you think
- 36:59Speaker 2: Christian baum Wore can play a similar role?
- 37:02Speaker 8: Uh?
- 37:03Speaker 5: Not really, to be honest, I mean, I like Christian Barmore,
- 37:05Speaker 5: but I just I see him a little bit different,
- 37:08Speaker 5: a little bit different than than Simmons, who, like I said,
- 37:11Speaker 5: I mean, I think Simmons can do it all, and
- 37:12Speaker 5: I think Barmore is still a little bit of a
- 37:14Speaker 5: work in progress against the run. That they switch schemes, maybe,
- 37:17Speaker 5: but I don't know. I see Simmons as a as
- 37:20Speaker 5: more of a just every down impact run impact, the
- 37:23Speaker 5: passing game, just a nightmare inside. But maybe with a
- 37:26Speaker 5: scheme shift maybe, But I would say not really, Okay,
- 37:28Speaker 5: I'd still want to target a guy, you know, put.
- 37:30Speaker 3: Him in that three technique, like, yeah, you know Jeffrey Simmons,
- 37:33Speaker 3: Like when you put him at the three technique, you
- 37:35Speaker 3: just let him get up the field and not worry
- 37:37Speaker 3: about gap integrity and pocket integrity and all that stuff,
- 37:41Speaker 3: and just maybe, you know, I think that that would
- 37:44Speaker 3: be a good role for him. For Christian Barber, I
- 37:46Speaker 3: do too.
- 37:47Speaker 4: I understand what Mike is saying. I just I don't
- 37:50Speaker 4: know that I'm willing to say that Barbour can be
- 37:52Speaker 4: as good as Jeffrey Simmons. Yeah, I think that's you know,
- 37:54Speaker 4: where I would separate.
- 37:55Speaker 3: But why not just get in style?
- 37:59Speaker 4: Yeah, I think yeah, And I think he's improved a
- 38:02Speaker 4: little bit. You know, it's kind of hard because he
- 38:05Speaker 4: lost a whole year. Yeah, but I think I think
- 38:07Speaker 4: he had shown improvement, you know, in the Run game
- 38:10Speaker 4: two years ago, when you know, when we last saw
- 38:12Speaker 4: him on a regular basis. I think he's more. I
- 38:15Speaker 4: think he's closer to a three down player, you know,
- 38:18Speaker 4: than than maybe we remember.
- 38:19Speaker 5: But he might be a zero down player. I mean,
- 38:22Speaker 5: right now, there's so much there's so many questions around
- 38:24Speaker 5: him and his health and then you know, kind of
- 38:26Speaker 5: having the relapse of the of the problem.
- 38:28Speaker 2: Like I just I think he's even when he came
- 38:29Speaker 2: back this year, he wasn't the same, right, but he
- 38:32Speaker 2: didn't seem to have that leg strength and that put.
- 38:34Speaker 4: But I don't necessarily I'm not gonna say that's why
- 38:37Speaker 4: he's not as good as Jeffrey Simmons, Like, yeah, I
- 38:39Speaker 4: mean he shouldn't have been like it was three months
- 38:42Speaker 4: probably without really doing any football.
- 38:44Speaker 2: Yeah. On the offensive side, my questions are for Fred
- 38:47Speaker 2: and Paul. When Josh last coached here, he worked with
- 38:50Speaker 2: a young quarterback, and both of you could be classified
- 38:53Speaker 2: as unhappy with the results. Fred didn't like that they
- 38:56Speaker 2: held back on some of what they did, and Paul
- 38:58Speaker 2: just didn't think it was as good as a lot
- 39:00Speaker 2: of other people. My question is, do each of you
- 39:03Speaker 2: expect similar results or do you have higher expectations? And then, lastly,
- 39:06Speaker 2: has anyone figured out what Fred was talking about on
- 39:08Speaker 2: Tuesday with the Micah Parkson's JJ McCarthy thing.
- 39:12Speaker 4: No one knows. I don't even know, So I would
- 39:16Speaker 4: expect it to be better. I think Drake May is
- 39:18Speaker 4: a lot better player than Mac Jones. I would expect
- 39:21Speaker 4: Josh McDaniels to have more success with Drake May than
- 39:25Speaker 4: he did with Mac jecks.
- 39:25Speaker 2: And you know, it's a good question because but you
- 39:29Speaker 2: have to take it in context, so you go back
- 39:31Speaker 2: to that time. Belichick's the head coach Mac Jones is
- 39:35Speaker 2: the quarterback that you just drafted. There's a question as
- 39:38Speaker 2: to whether even Belichick wanted this guy. I don't know,
- 39:41Speaker 2: but maybe he didn't. So maybe he's thinking he's not
- 39:44Speaker 2: that good. Number one thing is protect the ball. We're
- 39:47Speaker 2: not gonna let this guy do what they did this
- 39:51Speaker 2: year with Drake May or in twenty twenty four, which
- 39:53Speaker 2: is allow him to make mistakes. They certainly coddled him.
- 39:57Speaker 2: And it's Belichick, you know, I want to win football games.
- 40:00Speaker 2: I'm not here to develop this young guy. I want
- 40:03Speaker 2: to win football games.
- 40:04Speaker 5: Yeah what I mean.
- 40:04Speaker 2: And I think that had a lot to do with it.
- 40:06Speaker 2: And so you know, then you ask yourself how much
- 40:10Speaker 2: influence did Belichick have on Josh that year?
- 40:14Speaker 4: Yeah?
- 40:14Speaker 5: Well, I mean look at how Mac did once they
- 40:16Speaker 5: did let him start throwing around the ball, and there
- 40:17Speaker 5: were a lot of resources. But I thought Paul made
- 40:19Speaker 5: a good point yesterday and your your shows with valgar Maz,
- 40:23Speaker 5: you know, talking about Drake may taking on the Josh offense.
- 40:27Speaker 5: I mean, that puts a lot on the quarterback and
- 40:29Speaker 5: I think, you know, Paul made a point that you know,
- 40:31Speaker 5: Drake may seems pretty bright and I have hope and
- 40:34Speaker 5: confidence that he'll be able to handle everything it seems
- 40:37Speaker 5: like Josh is going to put on him. But I
- 40:38Speaker 5: do think that that's a big question mark of you know,
- 40:41Speaker 5: is he ready to really get it?
- 40:43Speaker 6: You know, the whole offense is going to run through him.
- 40:44Speaker 4: Now that would have been my you know, you got
- 40:47Speaker 4: time for like one quick question, just simplistically. Do you
- 40:51Speaker 4: plan on running a similar system that you've always run
- 40:54Speaker 4: or are you going to transition a little bit more
- 40:56Speaker 4: to whatever West Coast version that everybody else is running. Yeah,
- 41:00Speaker 4: that's that's really all I need to know.
- 41:02Speaker 6: You're going to tailor it to your quarterback, right.
- 41:05Speaker 4: But not necessarily tailoring it to my quarterback. The system
- 41:08Speaker 4: that he's run forever has been deemed to be pretty
- 41:13Speaker 4: tough on quarterbacks. The West Coast system is deemed to
- 41:17Speaker 4: be a little bit easier on quarterbacks. Which, you know,
- 41:20Speaker 4: which one of those two are you going to follow?
- 41:22Speaker 4: I mean, I expect him to be all the things
- 41:25Speaker 4: that Evan talked about in terms of creative with his
- 41:27Speaker 4: play calling and game planning and all that stuff, because
- 41:30Speaker 4: I saw Josh mcdinals do that, you know, the entire
- 41:34Speaker 4: time he was here. There always going to be a
- 41:36Speaker 4: game plan. Whatever offense they run, it's not always going
- 41:40Speaker 4: to look exactly the same depending on the opponent. I'm
- 41:43Speaker 4: pretty confident in that. I'm just wondering what he's going
- 41:46Speaker 4: to do for the basis of his system, the terminology,
- 41:50Speaker 4: what he's asking the quarterback to do in terms of
- 41:52Speaker 4: protections and calling out the mic stuff that we saw
- 41:56Speaker 4: for twenty five years that we didn't see at all
- 41:59Speaker 4: last year. Yeah, And I don't know. I don't have
- 42:02Speaker 4: the answer to that. I have no idea.
- 42:03Speaker 3: I mean, that can be that is simple though, like that,
- 42:05Speaker 3: that's just it's on the center and other systems, it's
- 42:08Speaker 3: on the quarterback here. I mean, I think that's an
- 42:11Speaker 3: easy fix. I don't I don't expect him to all
- 42:13Speaker 3: of a sudden start running a Sean McVay Kyle Shanahan
- 42:16Speaker 3: offense like and nor would I want him to do that,
- 42:18Speaker 3: Like would I would like to see him do what
- 42:21Speaker 3: he does best. And do you know, if you're gonna
- 42:24Speaker 3: hire Josh McDaniels and let him be Josh McDaniels, don't
- 42:26Speaker 3: try to turn him into Kyle shanahan, like, do what
- 42:29Speaker 3: you do. But there are little tweaks to it that
- 42:31Speaker 3: I'm sure he will make, and I think he did
- 42:33Speaker 3: make at times with Mac Jones to kind of water
- 42:35Speaker 3: it down a little bit on a young quarterback, you know,
- 42:39Speaker 3: the being in the headset until fifteen seconds, you know,
- 42:42Speaker 3: with the play clock and things like that. It allowed
- 42:45Speaker 3: Mac Jones to get through that rookie season. So I
- 42:48Speaker 3: don't expect Josh McDaniels to throw.
- 42:50Speaker 4: First half of it anyway.
- 42:51Speaker 3: I don't think that I don't expect Josh to throw
- 42:54Speaker 3: Drake May into the deep end of the pool in
- 42:55Speaker 3: terms of the information that he's thrown at him.
- 42:57Speaker 4: It's certainly not going to be where Tom Brady was,
- 43:00Speaker 4: you know he and I think he had a quote
- 43:02Speaker 4: that I heard this is going on one of those
- 43:06Speaker 4: for Cocta podcasts. I don't know when he's talked about,
- 43:10Speaker 4: you know, we have buckets full. You know, you guys
- 43:13Speaker 4: had buckets full of knowledge, and obviously you're going with
- 43:15Speaker 4: a young quarterback, it's like a cupful. I think he
- 43:18Speaker 4: recognizes that. I wouldn't, to use Evans's term, He's not
- 43:22Speaker 4: going to throw him into the deep end.
- 43:23Speaker 2: He just hasn't seen it.
- 43:24Speaker 4: But I do kind of wonder if the system is
- 43:28Speaker 4: maybe in the past its due date.
- 43:30Speaker 5: Yeah, when we talked to I don't know if we're
- 43:32Speaker 5: on there talking about this, but like David Andrews, coming
- 43:34Speaker 5: back knows, Josh's system knows everything. I mean, it's probably
- 43:37Speaker 5: even if it's not so much during the play or
- 43:39Speaker 5: calling out the micro you know, calling out the protections
- 43:42Speaker 5: all that stuff is different, but you know, just understanding
- 43:44Speaker 5: the offense and being kind of a tutor for him,
- 43:47Speaker 5: you know. I think there's been some speculation. Well, you
- 43:48Speaker 5: got Brian Hoyer being around, you.
- 43:50Speaker 4: Know, it's another alignment that has you know, familiarity, and
- 43:54Speaker 4: he was here too.
- 43:55Speaker 2: So see, all right, my food's here, take a break,
- 43:59Speaker 2: we come back. I have a new rule change for
- 44:03Speaker 2: the NFL that I think would be intrigued. All right,

- 45:08Speaker 11: It's time now for another episode of Patch from the
- 45:10Speaker 11: Past podcast Matt Smith and Paul Parrello joined by the
- 45:13Speaker 11: newest member of the Patriots Hall of Fame, Mike Rabel
- 45:15Speaker 11: and boy for two people. I know you think we're
- 45:17Speaker 11: gonna be BSU, but we were on the table, Mike
- 45:20Speaker 11: pounding every single year, give Rabel in, give rabel in,
- 45:23Speaker 11: finally year in.
- 45:24Speaker 4: What was the experience like for you yesterday, Mike, Well.
- 45:28Speaker 12: It was amazing. It just to come up in the
- 45:30Speaker 12: reception that we received, my family received, that I received
- 45:34Speaker 12: from the first of all, the fans that were here
- 45:37Speaker 12: in the rain, and again I know that I wish
- 45:40Speaker 12: that we could have had the fans, but we didn't.
- 45:42Speaker 12: I think it was an intimate reception, just a lot
- 45:47Speaker 12: of emotion. I don't think I've given myself a chance
- 45:49Speaker 12: to just to go back and reflect on that, on
- 45:53Speaker 12: the eight years here and the success and the teammates,
- 45:55Speaker 12: and I think that was probably the coolest thing was
- 45:59Speaker 12: to see them and see Dante and and be able to,
- 46:03Speaker 12: you know, just catch up and you know, just see
- 46:05Speaker 12: how excited everybody is for.
- 46:07Speaker 4: You can we go back to the start of that
- 46:09Speaker 4: eight years and you know, sort of run us through
- 46:12Speaker 4: your free agent visit here. We've heard a lot of
- 46:14Speaker 4: stories about how it's not overly glamorous when in.
- 46:18Speaker 11: The line that they wind in dynam at the ground round.
- 46:21Speaker 12: I don't know if you were, well, I was with
- 46:22Speaker 12: Anthony Pleasant and so we probably got a little nicer experience.
- 46:26Speaker 12: I think we actually went to the Capitol Grill in
- 46:30Speaker 12: Chestnut Hill, and yeah, so because I think Bill had
- 46:36Speaker 12: had history with with Anthony Pleasant, so he was probably like, well,
- 46:40Speaker 12: let me take Anthony for for a nice meal. And
- 46:44Speaker 12: but it was just you know, visit at the stadium
- 46:46Speaker 12: in old Foxboro Stadium, and you know, again this isn't
- 46:51Speaker 12: These aren't recruiting trips. These are trips to to make
- 46:53Speaker 12: sure that you know, this is the player that we
- 46:55Speaker 12: want to target, and the player can ask questions and
- 46:59Speaker 12: get it from and then make a decision. And so
- 47:02Speaker 12: didn't have a whole lot of options, and this one
- 47:05Speaker 12: was certainly, you know, you know, the best one for me.
- 47:08Speaker 11: Do you You said yesterday during your speech that it
- 47:11Speaker 11: was important for you to start. You know, in four
- 47:14Speaker 11: years you did a lot, but you wanted to start.
- 47:16Speaker 11: Did you get a sense, maybe on that visit or
- 47:18Speaker 11: early on Mike, that these guys had a good idea
- 47:21Speaker 11: of how to use you.
- 47:23Speaker 12: Well, I can remember having a conversation with Bill and
- 47:25Speaker 12: him saying, hey, really, all we need is what you
- 47:29Speaker 12: did in that preseason game last year against Miami. And
- 47:32Speaker 12: I'm thinking I don't even remember playing Miami in the preseason,
- 47:36Speaker 12: but Bill had gone back and he had watched and
- 47:38Speaker 12: there were clips that he must have seen that there
- 47:42Speaker 12: was a vision for probably an extended playtime at that
- 47:46Speaker 12: point in time in the preseason or whatever it was.
- 47:51Speaker 12: And so then I started thinking Okay, well, at least
- 47:54Speaker 12: you know they have an idea of how they want
- 47:55Speaker 12: to use me or what I maybe able to do there.
- 48:00Speaker 12: Bill had talked about the opportunity, not guaranteeing anything, but
- 48:04Speaker 12: saying that there would be a spot at you know,
- 48:06Speaker 12: available pretty much at outside linebacker, where you know they
- 48:09Speaker 12: would have some other players to compete with and then
- 48:12Speaker 12: see where things were.
- 48:14Speaker 4: When you look at the way your years unfolded, it's
- 48:17Speaker 4: almost like it was a perfect system for you. I mean,
- 48:19Speaker 4: did you catch that right away? Like they really want
- 48:22Speaker 4: to use me exactly to you know, I don't skill.
- 48:25Speaker 12: I wasn't being misused at Pittsburgh. I had just transitioned
- 48:28Speaker 12: from a couple of different positions, you know, was rotating
- 48:32Speaker 12: in and was getting some playing time three and four
- 48:36Speaker 12: years in special teams and third down packages, whatever that
- 48:39Speaker 12: may be. But this was a new opportunity, some carryover
- 48:46Speaker 12: from Pittsburgh, some different and then as things progressed and
- 48:49Speaker 12: it was you know, learn this position. I actually I
- 48:52Speaker 12: think I played two seasons inside linebacker or a season
- 48:57Speaker 12: and a half at some point in time, and you'll
- 48:59Speaker 12: find my at different spots, do you.
- 49:03Speaker 11: I've heard this from many ex players guys who you
- 49:05Speaker 11: played with and everything like that. Were you able to
- 49:07Speaker 11: get away with more as far as like maybe busting Bill's.
- 49:10Speaker 12: Paul, Well, I don't know. I think the timing was
- 49:12Speaker 12: always critical. No, I don't think it's overrated. I think
- 49:15Speaker 12: that there is. Like I said yesterday, I think I
- 49:18Speaker 12: said things that everybody wanted to say, and I probably
- 49:21Speaker 12: was just dumb enough to say it. I sometimes say
- 49:24Speaker 12: the quiet part out loud sometimes unfortunately. But it's all
- 49:28Speaker 12: timing and sometimes you know it. You know, it's it's
- 49:32Speaker 12: a it's a turn and to punch bowl and doesn't
- 49:34Speaker 12: always work, but sometimes it works out pretty good. But
- 49:38Speaker 12: but that takes a little bit of time, and it
- 49:40Speaker 12: takes you know, again, you have to be willing to
- 49:43Speaker 12: take it and if you want to give it. And
- 49:45Speaker 12: I think that Bill always was very conscious of that,
- 49:49Speaker 12: whether that's players to Bill or Bill to us. You know,
- 49:53Speaker 12: he knew that, you know, we had to sit there
- 49:56Speaker 12: and and take it when we got the low lights
- 49:58Speaker 12: and you know, we'd be on the illustrator and it
- 50:01Speaker 12: would be like, you know, what we can't do, and
- 50:04Speaker 12: so it just it was a good situation. We had
- 50:06Speaker 12: a bunch of really good teammates that that all kind
- 50:08Speaker 12: of rallied behind that.
- 50:09Speaker 11: Do you think maybe, I mean, you were able to
- 50:11Speaker 11: back it up with you play though, Mike, I don't
- 50:13Speaker 11: know if that's a fifty third or fifty fourth guy
- 50:15Speaker 11: that was trying to crack Wise, it might be different. Well,
- 50:18Speaker 11: you you were a communary eye on all three phases
- 50:20Speaker 11: of the game.
- 50:21Speaker 12: Yeah, I mean, but I think that that's what makes
- 50:24Speaker 12: a locker room. It's just different personalities. Again, you have
- 50:29Speaker 12: to perform on the field and then whatever your personality is.
- 50:33Speaker 12: I think that was there was no restrictions on, Hey,
- 50:36Speaker 12: we can just want a bunch of robots. That's I
- 50:38Speaker 12: think that was the impression that everybody had, and we
- 50:41Speaker 12: certainly weren't that.
- 50:42Speaker 2: Well.
- 50:42Speaker 4: The best thing about Mike, and I told you this
- 50:44Speaker 4: a million times, Mike didn't care who he was busting on. Professional.
- 50:48Speaker 4: I used to call you a professional ballbuster. Okay, that's
- 50:50Speaker 4: what you were. I'd come in with like a TV
- 50:53Speaker 4: shirt on one day and he goes, look at this fraud.
- 50:55Speaker 4: He's got TV and it didn't matter. He treated all
- 50:57Speaker 4: of us the same, And I think that's probably ated
- 51:00Speaker 4: the locker room and guarded respect in that way.
- 51:03Speaker 12: Well, again, I think the fact that if you have
- 51:07Speaker 12: a relationship with somebody, I think that's when you kind
- 51:09Speaker 12: of go back and forth with them. It's like having
- 51:11Speaker 12: a nickname. You don't have a nickname, you know, there's
- 51:13Speaker 12: no such thing as a bad nickname. Just be appreciative
- 51:15Speaker 12: that you have a nickname. That means that they know
- 51:18Speaker 12: who you are and that you're kind of a part
- 51:20Speaker 12: of the group. And if you don't have a nickname,
- 51:23Speaker 12: you know, you better try to figure out why. And
- 51:25Speaker 12: so it was whether it was the relationship with the media,
- 51:29Speaker 12: you know, it was a two way street, assistant coaches
- 51:33Speaker 12: and certainly teammates.
- 51:35Speaker 6: Much has been made.
- 51:36Speaker 11: You played in a different era, believe it or not,
- 51:38Speaker 11: where and as during your career the league was starting
- 51:41Speaker 11: to legislate against defenses hard hitting and everything like that.
- 51:46Speaker 11: When you look back at the Warner play ties interception,
- 51:49Speaker 11: I just thought it was very generous of Ty to
- 51:51Speaker 11: give you credit yesterday too. Are you going to get
- 51:54Speaker 11: flagged for that if that play happens today?
- 51:56Speaker 12: I don't know. I mean, I think that what we've
- 51:57Speaker 12: talked about is matching the hand, and they've they've they've
- 52:01Speaker 12: changed here in the last year or two about what's forcible? Hell,
- 52:05Speaker 12: I don't know, you know what I mean, I should
- 52:07Speaker 12: have gotten there sooner, to be honest with that. They
- 52:08Speaker 12: didn't block me. It was just a lucky play and
- 52:10Speaker 12: tied it all the work. And but whether it's you know,
- 52:14Speaker 12: as long as it's not forcible. You know, we've talked
- 52:16Speaker 12: about matching a hand and same thing that they teach
- 52:18Speaker 12: here and you know everybody else is trying to teach.
- 52:21Speaker 12: And didn't hit the football. I'm glad that I didn't
- 52:24Speaker 12: so that Ty was able to catch it and score.
- 52:27Speaker 4: Can we ask you a little bit about tight end too,
- 52:29Speaker 4: and just sort of how that transition, how did it
- 52:32Speaker 4: come about who's Who's I?
- 52:33Speaker 12: I think Drew put it best yesterday. I had a
- 52:35Speaker 12: bunch of energy. And they'd show up three hours before
- 52:37Speaker 12: the game and go out on the field and Drew
- 52:39Speaker 12: it would be out warming up and I would start
- 52:42Speaker 12: running routes and he'd say, well, this is this is one,
- 52:45Speaker 12: this is two, this is three, four, five, run this,
- 52:49Speaker 12: you know, different routes. And I'd run him on the
- 52:52Speaker 12: right and we'd flip around and run him on the left.
- 52:54Speaker 12: And then I'd go inside and wait for the game
- 52:57Speaker 12: and he must have had a conversation or Charlie was
- 53:01Speaker 12: outside and said, hey, this guy could probably do this,
- 53:04Speaker 12: and we had it in. We used it finally in
- 53:11Speaker 12: the Chargers game in San Diego. Scored, we lost the game,
- 53:16Speaker 12: so it did not get much attention, and then kind
- 53:20Speaker 12: of snowballed from there. Whether we had two tight ends
- 53:24Speaker 12: active or three, sometimes that that third tight end was
- 53:28Speaker 12: never very happy when we got down to the goal line,
- 53:31Speaker 12: and you know, so those tight ends probably hated the
- 53:35Speaker 12: fact that I would go in there at times.
- 53:36Speaker 11: Drew never got a chance to do that on the field.
- 53:39Speaker 11: Tom came in, Mike, was there a time that you
- 53:42Speaker 11: can think of We remember, like you guys, the defense
- 53:45Speaker 11: carried that team in OH one, for sure, no doubt
- 53:47Speaker 11: about it, no disgrace. But do you remember time you said,
- 53:49Speaker 11: you know what, this kid might have something? Not obviously
- 53:52Speaker 11: nobody saw where he was going to wind up, but
- 53:54Speaker 11: do you remember a time where you said, you know what,
- 53:56Speaker 11: this kid might have something?
- 53:58Speaker 12: I don't, you know specifically, It's just hard for me
- 54:02Speaker 12: to to think back, you know, the two minute drive
- 54:08Speaker 12: in the Super Bowl, and I just it's just hard
- 54:12Speaker 12: for me. I just remember his leadership is competitiveness. That
- 54:15Speaker 12: that's what I enjoyed at practice in the building, his
- 54:19Speaker 12: work ethic, you know, I would always see it. I mean,
- 54:21Speaker 12: this guy was you know, he was powerlifting in the
- 54:23Speaker 12: weight room. It wasn't you know the pliability that we
- 54:26Speaker 12: saw later on. I mean this this guy was in
- 54:29Speaker 12: there working and trying to train and get stronger, and
- 54:32Speaker 12: he knew that he needed to develop and he needed
- 54:34Speaker 12: to be a stronger player. That's what I recognized. I said,
- 54:38Speaker 12: then this guy's in here is squatting and power cleaning,
- 54:41Speaker 12: and you know, he's training differently than I think most
- 54:45Speaker 12: quarterbacks in the NFL would.
- 54:47Speaker 4: Be at that time when you had that streak, the
- 54:50Speaker 4: winning three out of four, I mean obviously winning back
- 54:53Speaker 4: to back hasn't been done since. You know, do you
- 54:55Speaker 4: look back at that and appreciate just how special it
- 54:58Speaker 4: was and what is it mean to you to be
- 55:01Speaker 4: part of those teams?
- 55:03Speaker 12: Well, I think that I don't look back enough. I don't.
- 55:07Speaker 12: But we expected to win, you know, I mean we did.
- 55:10Speaker 12: We We we had a feeling about us that when
- 55:13Speaker 12: we each week, it was like, Okay, what's the game
- 55:16Speaker 12: plan going to be and how are we going to win?
- 55:18Speaker 12: And we expected to win, and that is a you know,
- 55:22Speaker 12: that's a powerful mindset to be in. Now, we didn't
- 55:26Speaker 12: win every game, but you know, rarely did did we
- 55:30Speaker 12: you know, were we out of a game? Or did
- 55:31Speaker 12: we think that we weren't going to be able to
- 55:33Speaker 12: compete in each game?
- 55:35Speaker 4: Really quick? When you.
- 55:38Speaker 3: And now great moments in.
- 55:42Speaker 13: History and that I was still nice enough to invite
- 55:45Speaker 13: you along. Yes, very nice. You got there were like
- 55:49Speaker 13: six of us. I mean the place was was the
- 55:52Speaker 13: you know what block?
- 55:53Speaker 2: Why are you mad at me?
- 55:54Speaker 4: Why? Why?
- 55:55Speaker 2: He says, with the big grin across his face. Why
- 55:57Speaker 2: are you so upset?
- 55:59Speaker 3: I'm upset at you?
- 56:00Speaker 14: Why?
- 56:01Speaker 4: Yeah, just you?
- 56:02Speaker 2: All of our lives are open book. Why is it
- 56:04Speaker 2: you are? Why you purposely do these things?
- 56:08Speaker 4: Yes?
- 56:08Speaker 2: I do? Yes, yes I do. I heartlessly talk. We
- 56:11Speaker 2: all talk about things going on.
- 56:13Speaker 13: You make things out of thin air that are not there.
- 56:15Speaker 4: What's thin air?
- 56:16Speaker 2: You were with a lady friend? What's what's thin air
- 56:18Speaker 2: about that?
- 56:19Speaker 12: No?
- 56:19Speaker 13: A lady friend implies that there's something going on, and
- 56:23Speaker 13: she wrote that that's the end of it.
- 56:24Speaker 2: Dude, look like but it doesn't have to be.
- 56:26Speaker 9: It.
- 56:26Speaker 13: It is because I told you yesterday and I don't
- 56:29Speaker 13: like it when you make me repeat myself.
- 56:31Speaker 2: It sounds like my father. You think I'm screwing things
- 56:35Speaker 2: up for you. Just tell me you've been screwing things
- 56:37Speaker 2: up for me for twelve years.
- 56:38Speaker 4: Buddy.
- 56:39Speaker 2: Did you specifically tell him not to mention it? No?
- 56:42Speaker 13: I knew he was going as soon as he walked
- 56:43Speaker 13: up and saw us.
- 56:44Speaker 3: He had that stupid grin that he's got on his
- 56:45Speaker 3: face right now.
- 56:47Speaker 6: I can so see it.
- 56:49Speaker 2: I won't mention it again. But if when something happens,
- 56:52Speaker 2: could you let us.
- 56:53Speaker 3: Know nothing is going to happen.
- 56:56Speaker 2: You know, like if they hook, you know, if they decide.
- 56:58Speaker 6: To nothing, is there thing to happen? You morons?
- 57:04Speaker 3: I'm gonna go with And why are you yelling at me?
- 57:06Speaker 2: I didn't do anything because because you're.
- 57:08Speaker 3: Joking around to him on a little Yes, you.
- 57:10Speaker 2: Admit it, but this is all Fred, I don't Okay,
- 57:14Speaker 2: what'd you guys eat?
- 57:14Speaker 4: Did I miss that part?
- 57:16Speaker 2: I had swordfish? That's another great moment from all right
- 57:21Speaker 2: back here on Patriots Unfiltered eight five five pass five
- 57:24Speaker 2: hundred is the tpx houtline web no podcasts at Patriots
- 57:29Speaker 2: dot com.
- 57:29Speaker 4: Miss Can you call Eric just to get under his
- 57:32Speaker 4: skin for a second.
- 57:34Speaker 2: It must have been too quiet, like I haven't heard
- 57:36Speaker 2: hider hair of him. A little warried classic, I'm a
- 57:39Speaker 2: little warried check him. But before the break, I teased,
- 57:44Speaker 2: I have a rule change that I've been thinking.
- 57:46Speaker 4: About and I've been waiting with baited breath.
- 57:49Speaker 2: And it has to do with the communications in the helmet.
- 57:53Speaker 2: And my rule change is keeping on all games all players,
- 57:57Speaker 2: Like why not? Why not have your coach be able
- 58:01Speaker 2: to talk to the quarterback throughout the game? Like why not?
- 58:05Speaker 2: What what's the downside of that? So you don't like
- 58:09Speaker 2: car you're always talking to your pit room, but you.
- 58:11Speaker 4: Don't think that, like you just like you know, you
- 58:15Speaker 4: know deuce deuce is wide open, just a douce?
- 58:18Speaker 2: Why not?
- 58:20Speaker 4: Because are you playing or.
- 58:22Speaker 6: You play quarterback? Paul?
- 58:23Speaker 5: Would that be distracting for you as you're distracted?
- 58:25Speaker 2: Help you?
- 58:26Speaker 3: Well?
- 58:26Speaker 2: You worked out like some quarterbacks might like it. Other
- 58:29Speaker 2: quarterbacks might say, don't do that. But I think to
- 58:32Speaker 2: have communication available throughout the game. What's the downside of that?
- 58:35Speaker 5: I like it was an XFL thing, you know, like
- 58:37Speaker 5: one of the experimental leagues to try it, but it
- 58:39Speaker 5: would be interesting you get like a shorthand with somebody
- 58:41Speaker 5: where you know you have cold words, so you just
- 58:43Speaker 5: get one thing and you don't want to.
- 58:48Speaker 3: I would I would say it would be a really
- 58:51Speaker 3: huge advantage for certain coaches that are are better than
- 58:55Speaker 3: others okay, and so like you have Sean McVay in
- 58:59Speaker 3: the quarterbacks ear at all times, that's gonna be a
- 59:03Speaker 3: gigantic advantage. And if I was a coach, I would
- 59:06Speaker 3: then put my butt up in the booth so I
- 59:08Speaker 3: could see the overhead and then you can literally receivers.
- 59:13Speaker 2: Better coaches then, you know, make it, make it a difference.
- 59:16Speaker 3: Well, I just think that that's the players competition.
- 59:22Speaker 4: I mean, now it's just the smartest guy wins because
- 59:24Speaker 4: he sees it before something.
- 59:26Speaker 2: In every other in every in every other sport, pretty
- 59:28Speaker 2: much there's open communication during the game. Like you know,
- 59:32Speaker 2: like an NBA you don't need headphones because obviously you
- 59:35Speaker 2: don't have helmets, but the coaches on the sideline barking
- 59:39Speaker 2: out things to players throughout the game.
- 59:42Speaker 4: And the coaches on the sideline of the NFL game
- 59:45Speaker 4: barking out there.
- 59:46Speaker 2: You can't hear them but football, so you're.
- 59:48Speaker 4: Telling me if you're down this end in the NBA
- 59:50Speaker 4: game and the balls down that end.
- 59:52Speaker 2: They know they can't, Yes they can't. They run to
- 59:54Speaker 2: the edge of the table.
- 59:55Speaker 4: They can screaming and they can't get hurt. They're not
- 59:58Speaker 4: heard either.
- 59:58Speaker 2: But all I'm saying is why not? What's the downside
- 1:00:01Speaker 2: of that?
- 1:00:02Speaker 4: Like, I just don't want to. I don't want a
- 1:00:04Speaker 4: league decided by the like the chess masters, who are
- 1:00:08Speaker 4: just telling the coach orchestrating all of them, not the nerds,
- 1:00:11Speaker 4: just because I don't think it really takes a nerd
- 1:00:13Speaker 4: to see that that guy's open. I would not call
- 1:00:16Speaker 4: myself a nerd, and I do that in the press box.
- 1:00:18Speaker 2: Every ding he's wide open, just throw it to him.
- 1:00:23Speaker 5: There's progressions.
- 1:00:24Speaker 2: I still I still think that. I think it would
- 1:00:28Speaker 2: elevate the play. I think it would make it better
- 1:00:31Speaker 2: play on the field. Maybe less mistakes. I don't know,
- 1:00:34Speaker 2: you still have to execute.
- 1:00:35Speaker 4: I like competition, but that's me. I think I like
- 1:00:38Speaker 4: guys competing against one another.
- 1:00:40Speaker 2: I think I think this is still in the spirit
- 1:00:43Speaker 2: of competition.
- 1:00:43Speaker 5: That did you mean Fred just the quarterback or like everybody?
- 1:00:46Speaker 6: Everybody?
- 1:00:47Speaker 4: Everyone loving guys on both sides of the ball, and
- 1:00:49Speaker 4: they all have a thing. It's mass hysteria. Is he
- 1:00:51Speaker 4: talking to me?
- 1:00:52Speaker 12: I don't know.
- 1:00:53Speaker 3: He's yelling like you know, that would be distracting.
- 1:00:56Speaker 2: But I think every team should have the ability to
- 1:00:58Speaker 2: do with the way they want to do it. Huh.
- 1:01:00Speaker 2: If they want to and everybody tell them they can.
- 1:01:02Speaker 2: It's just a couple of people on either side of
- 1:01:04Speaker 2: the ball. They can do it, but just let them
- 1:01:06Speaker 2: do it the way.
- 1:01:07Speaker 5: I mean, would you like clam up if you're a
- 1:01:08Speaker 5: wide receiver and you're like lined up and they're like, Hi,
- 1:01:10Speaker 5: can you go?
- 1:01:11Speaker 6: And you hear the coach.
- 1:01:12Speaker 4: Going pearls wide open, pearls wide open.
- 1:01:14Speaker 2: And you know, like that throw you off?
- 1:01:16Speaker 5: I don't, you know, like that's what you get used
- 1:01:18Speaker 5: to adjustment.
- 1:01:19Speaker 3: I feel like it would confuse me.
- 1:01:20Speaker 4: That's one of those things though you get if that's
- 1:01:22Speaker 4: the way it's done, you get us.
- 1:01:24Speaker 12: I don't know.
- 1:01:25Speaker 4: I feel like I want less of why not because
- 1:01:28Speaker 4: I want more like the players play deciding. That's why
- 1:01:31Speaker 4: I'm not a huge I'm very much in the minority,
- 1:01:34Speaker 4: but I'm not a huge fan of like the drastic
- 1:01:36Speaker 4: weather games.
- 1:01:37Speaker 5: I was just gonna say that along those lines, we're
- 1:01:39Speaker 5: talking to rule changes, like would you ever consider playoff
- 1:01:42Speaker 5: games being moved to neutral sites where they're where weather
- 1:01:45Speaker 5: is no longer a factor.
- 1:01:46Speaker 2: No.
- 1:01:46Speaker 4: I do like the fact that they're home field, all right.
- 1:01:51Speaker 4: I don't love it when the weather is a factor
- 1:01:54Speaker 4: in the game. I'm with you on this one, but
- 1:01:57Speaker 4: I do think that you win more games and you
- 1:01:59Speaker 4: get the right Now, how what I would tweak is
- 1:02:02Speaker 4: forget the divisions, Like, if there's going to be seven teams,
- 1:02:05Speaker 4: the seven best records should get seated one to So basically.
- 1:02:10Speaker 2: Do we need even conferences? Do we just have a
- 1:02:13Speaker 2: thirty two team league and every year the schedule is
- 1:02:16Speaker 2: a big surprise and then at the end of the
- 1:02:19Speaker 2: year it's just seating. Yeah, you know.
- 1:02:21Speaker 5: Well, I like rivalries though, I mean, I think there's
- 1:02:23Speaker 5: something good about, you know, playing certain teams twice a
- 1:02:25Speaker 5: year and always having home and homes, knowing you can
- 1:02:27Speaker 5: count on that.
- 1:02:28Speaker 3: But the hockey, like the hockey format in the NHL
- 1:02:31Speaker 3: is disaster. That's a terrible point and it's all messed up.
- 1:02:34Speaker 3: The NBA does it Paul's way where it's just one
- 1:02:37Speaker 3: through eight now that play in but like you know, it's.
- 1:02:41Speaker 4: In the NHL. Used to do it that way, it
- 1:02:43Speaker 4: changed it like whatever, Yeah years ago. That's yeah, Like
- 1:02:48Speaker 4: I don't know. Again, I know I'm in the minority,
- 1:02:51Speaker 4: so I fully admit that I think of it differently.
- 1:02:53Speaker 4: I'm not a huge like division rivalry got like to me,
- 1:02:58Speaker 4: the Patriots in the the Brady era, in my view,
- 1:03:04Speaker 4: their rivals were Pittsburgh, Indie later Denver in Baltimore. It
- 1:03:13Speaker 4: was never the three divisional teams, right that you have
- 1:03:17Speaker 4: to play twice a year every year, like I you know,
- 1:03:22Speaker 4: I think back to you know, Green Bay Dallas games
- 1:03:25Speaker 4: with Brett Favre and Troy Aikman. You know San Francisco
- 1:03:29Speaker 4: Dallas in the Steve Young. You know, I don't think
- 1:03:33Speaker 4: of the remember that Bears Packers game. You might not
- 1:03:36Speaker 4: know which one I'm talking about because they played two
- 1:03:38Speaker 4: hundred times tier.
- 1:03:40Speaker 2: And you have to look at the origins of the
- 1:03:43Speaker 2: divisions in the A lot of it was geographic based.
- 1:03:46Speaker 2: It costs more money and time to get from places,
- 1:03:49Speaker 2: so they tried to a great point. They don't need
- 1:03:51Speaker 2: to do that anymore, right.
- 1:03:52Speaker 4: Just you know, if you want to have the two conferences,
- 1:03:54Speaker 4: so you still have like a super Bowl with the
- 1:03:56Speaker 4: two different conferences. Fine, yeah, one to six. Yeah, and
- 1:04:01Speaker 4: that's how that's how you play the conference.
- 1:04:03Speaker 5: I just when Kurt Warner was talking about it, though,
- 1:04:05Speaker 5: I just I what are these teams supposed to do?
- 1:04:07Speaker 5: You know, like they like you can't pick that you're
- 1:04:09Speaker 5: a Dome team or you're a Southern team, and I mean,
- 1:04:12Speaker 5: I guess you so we'll just win, find a way
- 1:04:14Speaker 5: to win, or you're gonna just have to suck it
- 1:04:15Speaker 5: up with Kurt Warner.
- 1:04:17Speaker 6: But you know, but what are they supposed to do? Like,
- 1:04:18Speaker 6: how are they supposed to prepare for that?
- 1:04:20Speaker 5: It just feels like in innate disadvantage that the warm
- 1:04:23Speaker 5: weather teams are on if they're gonna have to go
- 1:04:25Speaker 5: play in a snowstorm. And I know, like that kind
- 1:04:27Speaker 5: of weather can be a great level or for both teams,
- 1:04:30Speaker 5: but still you're practicing in every day, you're a little
- 1:04:32Speaker 5: bit more used to it, and.
- 1:04:33Speaker 2: It's just I don't know that you're not really practicing
- 1:04:36Speaker 2: in it every day.
- 1:04:37Speaker 3: But I'm with you. I mean I said that on
- 1:04:39Speaker 3: Sunday watching the Eagles Rams game, and I got attacked like, well,
- 1:04:44Speaker 3: you know, why don't you like weather games? And I
- 1:04:46Speaker 3: just I want to see the best team win straight up.
- 1:04:50Speaker 4: I want to see the players play to the best
- 1:04:51Speaker 4: of their abilities, right, I don't want to see a
- 1:04:53Speaker 4: guy fall down because he came out of his cut
- 1:04:56Speaker 4: too fast.
- 1:04:56Speaker 2: So you don't think a team that can adapt to
- 1:04:58Speaker 2: different elements makes them a bet team.
- 1:05:00Speaker 4: No, No, I think it's a team that adapted to
- 1:05:03Speaker 4: the elements better.
- 1:05:04Speaker 2: Why because they had the ability to do that? No,
- 1:05:07Speaker 2: they could, they could adapt. If you're a team that
- 1:05:09Speaker 2: can't adapt, doesn't that I don't doubt.
- 1:05:11Speaker 4: I don't think it's always the team, Like the home
- 1:05:13Speaker 4: team doesn't always adapt to the elements better. So like
- 1:05:16Speaker 4: if it was just about that, then the home team
- 1:05:18Speaker 4: would always win.
- 1:05:18Speaker 2: Right.
- 1:05:19Speaker 4: Buffalo when they played Cincinnati a couple of years ago,
- 1:05:22Speaker 4: Cincinnati adjusted better to the elements than Buffalo did. Right,
- 1:05:25Speaker 4: So that that's not because they were better, it's because
- 1:05:28Speaker 4: they adapted to the elements better that day.
- 1:05:30Speaker 2: Why were they able to adapt?
- 1:05:32Speaker 4: Because maybe they don't do things is in the same
- 1:05:35Speaker 4: manner that the other team does. And the weather caused
- 1:05:38Speaker 4: Pooka Nakou to drop a couple of passes that I've
- 1:05:40Speaker 4: never seen them drop before, Like, that's not because they
- 1:05:43Speaker 4: adapted or a Better or whatever. I don't like when
- 1:05:46Speaker 4: the weather impacts the way the game is played. I
- 1:05:50Speaker 4: don't care necessarily like the Better, No, that was terrible.
- 1:05:54Speaker 4: That was one of the worst games ever to watch.
- 1:05:57Speaker 3: You just want to see, you know. From my perspective,
- 1:06:00Speaker 3: it's always obviously about the strategy and the x's and o's,
- 1:06:03Speaker 3: and it's like, well that everything goes out the door
- 1:06:06Speaker 3: if it's a blizzard, right, like we're not. You're not
- 1:06:08Speaker 3: running your regular offense if if you have snow everywhere
- 1:06:11Speaker 3: and you can't execute that regular offense. And to Pall's point,
- 1:06:15Speaker 3: I just thought watching that Philly La game, I thought
- 1:06:18Speaker 3: the Rams had a really good chance to win that game,
- 1:06:21Speaker 3: but then the snow came and they just were making
- 1:06:23Speaker 3: uncharacteristic errors because of the weather, you know, And and
- 1:06:27Speaker 3: I think a big part of it too is like
- 1:06:28Speaker 3: footing and understanding.
- 1:06:29Speaker 4: I even think, but I even think it affected Philadelphia too.
- 1:06:32Speaker 4: And this is where like, yes, I want to full disclosure.
- 1:06:34Speaker 4: I wanted the Rams to win because I like the
- 1:06:36Speaker 4: RAM I like Sean mcvahin, and I like Matthew Stafford.
- 1:06:38Speaker 4: I don't really make any secret of that, but I
- 1:06:41Speaker 4: would I would say that I don't think the Eagles
- 1:06:44Speaker 4: played to their capabilities because of the weather. Also, like
- 1:06:47Speaker 4: they couldn't really throw the ball. Aj Brown looked lost,
- 1:06:50Speaker 4: like he couldn't Like he dropped a pass at the goal.
- 1:06:52Speaker 4: I've never seen him drop that pass, the one he
- 1:06:54Speaker 4: dropped at thelon. So this is not because my team lost.
- 1:06:57Speaker 4: I don't like the weather. I don't think the Eagles
- 1:06:59Speaker 4: played very well in the in the weather either.
- 1:07:01Speaker 5: Well, what if we tied it all together and you
- 1:07:02Speaker 5: had realignment and you have all warm weather teams and
- 1:07:05Speaker 5: all cold weather teams.
- 1:07:06Speaker 4: And that way mass steric line below.
- 1:07:11Speaker 5: Well think about Miami though, I mean that's you know,
- 1:07:12Speaker 5: when we think of it goes both ways. You're always
- 1:07:14Speaker 5: looking for that Miami game. Are we going down there
- 1:07:16Speaker 5: in September? Are they coming up here in December?
- 1:07:18Speaker 6: You know? For them?
- 1:07:19Speaker 5: What are they supposed to do?
- 1:07:21Speaker 4: And at least I would say with that, like a
- 1:07:23Speaker 4: Dome team that plays a team from the Northeast, Like,
- 1:07:26Speaker 4: I don't think that's a disadvantage for the team in
- 1:07:28Speaker 4: the Northeast, do you know what I mean? And it's
- 1:07:30Speaker 4: not necessarily geographic based. Some teams are just you.
- 1:07:34Speaker 6: Know, well, Minnesota is not as good.
- 1:07:36Speaker 4: As the other team, and the weather equalizes the playing field.
- 1:07:39Speaker 4: Like I don't like when that happens. I don't care
- 1:07:41Speaker 4: necessarily who wins ninety percent of the time because most
- 1:07:44Speaker 4: of the time these games are played between teams that
- 1:07:46Speaker 4: we don't really care about, let's be honest.
- 1:07:48Speaker 3: But like the win game is such a perfect example.
- 1:07:50Speaker 3: Like the Patriots basically got blown out the other two
- 1:07:53Speaker 3: games against Buffalo that season, but they won the game
- 1:07:56Speaker 3: in the win because it was wonky.
- 1:07:58Speaker 6: Yeah, you know, and that's.
- 1:07:59Speaker 4: Fine, Like that's you know, that's the team that I
- 1:08:01Speaker 4: worked for and they won the games. And the same
- 1:08:03Speaker 4: thing in the early two thousands with the playoff games
- 1:08:06Speaker 4: when they went to Indianapolis, they were like thirty eight
- 1:08:09Speaker 4: thirty four games they play here and it's like seventeen
- 1:08:12Speaker 4: to three, twenty to three, you know, Like it's a
- 1:08:14Speaker 4: whole different game that got played. Now, the Patriots, I think,
- 1:08:17Speaker 4: were better than the Colts, So it's not I'm not
- 1:08:21Speaker 4: saying the better team doesn't win. I want to see
- 1:08:23Speaker 4: the game played the way it was played in Indy
- 1:08:25Speaker 4: when the Patriots won. Yeah, thirty eight thirty four inside,
- 1:08:29Speaker 4: you know what I mean. Like I think that's showing
- 1:08:31Speaker 4: the teams playing to the best of their.
- 1:08:33Speaker 2: Abilities and they adapted. Yeah, they're right, they're right.
- 1:08:37Speaker 4: About the adapting thing. But the Patriots were better, I know.
- 1:08:41Speaker 4: But if they had lost a game because of the
- 1:08:43Speaker 4: weather and you felt like they were the better team,
- 1:08:45Speaker 4: you'd be upset. This is where I'm trying to be consistent.
- 1:08:49Speaker 4: The Patriots showed you they could beat you in an
- 1:08:50Speaker 4: indoor outdoor. The only thing that Brady couldn't win in,
- 1:08:54Speaker 4: for some unknown reason, was intense to eat.
- 1:08:56Speaker 2: I would like to know, like how many times the
- 1:09:01Speaker 2: favorite team in a bad weather game lost the game.
- 1:09:05Speaker 2: I would like to know that record.
- 1:09:07Speaker 4: But I'm like, to me, it's it's less about the
- 1:09:10Speaker 4: outcome of the game as it is the way the
- 1:09:11Speaker 4: game is.
- 1:09:12Speaker 2: Yeah, it's not as fun, it's to me.
- 1:09:15Speaker 3: It's not aesthetically pleasing.
- 1:09:16Speaker 4: Yeah, it's just I like to see the teams play
- 1:09:19Speaker 4: to their capabilities. I don't care if the outcome is
- 1:09:22Speaker 4: exactly the same, right, Like, if Philadelphia beats the Rams
- 1:09:25Speaker 4: by six and the snow never happened, that's fine. I
- 1:09:29Speaker 4: just think that both teams played better.
- 1:09:31Speaker 2: You want the outcome to be solely based on ability.
- 1:09:34Speaker 4: Yeah, Yeah. Now, coaching is part of ability, don't get
- 1:09:38Speaker 4: me wrong. You know, schemes and whatnot. You know, this
- 1:09:40Speaker 4: team had a better game plan. They they executed their
- 1:09:42Speaker 4: game plan better and they won the game. Not because
- 1:09:46Speaker 4: you know, well, they couldn't use half of their game
- 1:09:48Speaker 4: plan because if the weather wasn't conducive to being able
- 1:09:51Speaker 4: to in the wind wind game, have Josh Allen throw
- 1:09:54Speaker 4: the ball forty times like he did in the other
- 1:09:57Speaker 4: two games when they blew us out.
- 1:09:59Speaker 5: You know, like makes me realize we should probably check
- 1:10:01Speaker 5: the weather before we do picks today. Oh yeah, Kansas
- 1:10:04Speaker 5: City and Philadelphia.
- 1:10:05Speaker 2: Yep, last show I mentioned about you mentioned the picks
- 1:10:10Speaker 2: that I'm rooting when it comes to the Bills in
- 1:10:12Speaker 2: Kansas City. For Kansas City to win, Yeah, because I
- 1:10:16Speaker 2: can't have the Bills winning a Super Bowl.
- 1:10:17Speaker 4: Oh I can't even I can't even think you.
- 1:10:21Speaker 2: I can't have the Bill. So if they're out, then
- 1:10:23Speaker 2: they can't win the Super Bowl.
- 1:10:24Speaker 4: This is definitely I don't want Kansas.
- 1:10:25Speaker 2: City to win three in a row either. But of
- 1:10:28Speaker 2: those two, you know, Sophie's choices I would take.
- 1:10:33Speaker 4: If one of them has to win the Super Bowl
- 1:10:35Speaker 4: would be rather than Kansas City. Yeah than Buffalo. Yeah,
- 1:10:38Speaker 4: that's an interesting thing.
- 1:10:39Speaker 2: Yeah, and Avery says, I'm a fraud because I'm a
- 1:10:42Speaker 2: fraud Patriots fan. If you root for Kansas City, get out.
- 1:10:46Speaker 5: Well, I mean, I mean, I'm rooting for Buffalo, but
- 1:10:48Speaker 5: I still feel kind of icky about it, you know.
- 1:10:51Speaker 3: But I can't. I have nobody to root for, like
- 1:10:53Speaker 3: this is like like I can't in my heart of hearts,
- 1:10:57Speaker 3: I cannot root for Buffalo. I like Josh Allen for
- 1:11:00Speaker 3: the Commanders. Hope, I I can't that also has.
- 1:11:05Speaker 4: I just don't like the Commanders. Now, it's hard to
- 1:11:07Speaker 4: root against this team. I'll say that. You know what
- 1:11:09Speaker 4: Jayden Daniels.
- 1:11:10Speaker 6: Is doing pretty cool.
- 1:11:11Speaker 5: Yeah, I mean, I I just think it's a it'd
- 1:11:14Speaker 5: be good for the league.
- 1:11:15Speaker 6: I think a Buffalo won. I just you know, yeah,
- 1:11:18Speaker 6: you know somebody did.
- 1:11:19Speaker 4: When you say things like that, then that's when they
- 1:11:21Speaker 4: jump on your sho it's fixed.
- 1:11:24Speaker 2: Chad says, question for Paul, does that mean in your
- 1:11:28Speaker 2: weather stance that no one should play in Denver because
- 1:11:30Speaker 2: of the altitude, it's impossible to eliminate that as a bar.
- 1:11:33Speaker 4: Man's that's a good point.
- 1:11:35Speaker 6: A helmet, that's a good.
- 1:11:37Speaker 4: That's a good comeback. I would say that the weather
- 1:11:41Speaker 4: isn't necessarily you know, the same, like like I think
- 1:11:45Speaker 4: Mike brought up Miami, Like that's a little different to me. Yeah,
- 1:11:50Speaker 4: I mean, but it's I understand what he's saying. It's
- 1:11:53Speaker 4: not a you know, it's not completely right out of
- 1:11:56Speaker 4: left field. The altitude is that's part of home field.
- 1:11:59Speaker 6: Me.
- 1:12:00Speaker 4: You can kind not eliminate. Like the advantage is not.
- 1:12:02Speaker 4: The part that I'm necessarily having a problem with is
- 1:12:05Speaker 4: it doesn't cause you not to be able to do
- 1:12:08Speaker 4: the things that you do every other week. Yeah, Like
- 1:12:11Speaker 4: I don't think teams go to Denver and they normally
- 1:12:14Speaker 4: throw the ball thirty five times, and they go to
- 1:12:17Speaker 4: Denver and because of the altitude, they can't throw it
- 1:12:20Speaker 4: thirty five times. That's what That's what Like intense wind does,
- 1:12:24Speaker 4: an intense snow, stuff like that, it causes you not
- 1:12:28Speaker 4: to be able to have a game plan that you
- 1:12:29Speaker 4: have every other game.
- 1:12:32Speaker 2: Sam from Saint Catherine says, how does any Patriots fan
- 1:12:35Speaker 2: not like weather games? The dynasty doesn't happen without them.
- 1:12:39Speaker 5: No, that's fair, And I mean when it's when it's
- 1:12:41Speaker 5: your team and they're having Dome teams come in here,
- 1:12:43Speaker 5: you love it. But I just say, as an overall
- 1:12:45Speaker 5: football fan, you know, I just I would echo what
- 1:12:48Speaker 5: Paul says. I just I want it to be level
- 1:12:50Speaker 5: playing ground and it's not going to take it out
- 1:12:51Speaker 5: of what it should be, which is, you know, like
- 1:12:54Speaker 5: your thing, like the schemes and what they run and
- 1:12:55Speaker 5: what they do best, and let these two teams play
- 1:12:58Speaker 5: at their best and being you know, it's ever gonna
- 1:13:00Speaker 5: be ideal conditions.
- 1:13:01Speaker 3: But I also just watch games in aren't the Patriots
- 1:13:04Speaker 3: so much differently than I watched the Patriots?
- 1:13:07Speaker 4: Yeah, And that's what I'm trying to get it. And
- 1:13:09Speaker 4: I don't care who wins, right.
- 1:13:10Speaker 3: You know, we were talking the other the other day
- 1:13:12Speaker 3: about Lamar and people they don't allow you to criticize Lamar. Well,
- 1:13:16Speaker 3: I just don't care. Like I'm not rooting for the Ravens,
- 1:13:19Speaker 3: Like they're not the team that I care if they
- 1:13:21Speaker 3: win or lose. I just think he's a great football player.
- 1:13:23Speaker 3: I think he's great to watch, so I enjoy watching him.
- 1:13:26Speaker 3: Like if you want to get hot and bothered about
- 1:13:28Speaker 3: that he doesn't win in the playoffs, and that's fine,
- 1:13:31Speaker 3: But it's just It's the same thing with the weather games, Like,
- 1:13:33Speaker 3: I just want to watch good football. I don't think
- 1:13:35Speaker 3: football in a blizzard is good football. I don't think
- 1:13:39Speaker 3: it's played well.
- 1:13:40Speaker 4: I would argue that if Adam vannit Terry missed that
- 1:13:43Speaker 4: field goal against the Raiders, you would not look at
- 1:13:45Speaker 4: this the same way. That's why I'm separating. My take
- 1:13:51Speaker 4: is not about the team that I'm rooting for, because
- 1:13:54Speaker 4: obviously the email is absolutely right, one of the most
- 1:13:58Speaker 4: iconic games in the history of the franchise because you
- 1:14:00Speaker 4: won it and then you went on to win the
- 1:14:03Speaker 4: Super Bowl and it kicked off a dynasty.
- 1:14:07Speaker 2: I don't.
- 1:14:09Speaker 4: I can't separate that. That's like the greatest memory of
- 1:14:13Speaker 4: the time that I've worked here was the first Super
- 1:14:15Speaker 4: Bowl when we went down to New Orleans.
- 1:14:17Speaker 2: But you can make the argument in that particular game,
- 1:14:19Speaker 2: had it not been for the weather, you probably would
- 1:14:21Speaker 2: have got blown out.
- 1:14:22Speaker 4: Yeah right, I mean, I'm not willing to say that.
- 1:14:25Speaker 4: I'm not willing to say that. I think that the
- 1:14:27Speaker 4: Raiders had to play the week before. Who's to say
- 1:14:29Speaker 4: they might have come out and the Patriots made have
- 1:14:31Speaker 4: blown them out if they had had the ability. They
- 1:14:34Speaker 4: threw the ball fifty four times that night. Yeah, yeah,
- 1:14:38Speaker 4: they maybe if if the weather wasn't bad, they would
- 1:14:40Speaker 4: have scored a lot more points and not been in
- 1:14:42Speaker 4: trouble like that.
- 1:14:42Speaker 5: It's a cool game, but it's ridiculous, Like it was
- 1:14:44Speaker 5: ridiculous what they were playing that day.
- 1:14:47Speaker 4: I'm with Evan. It's more about when I watch a
- 1:14:49Speaker 4: game and I don't care who wins, I'd like to
- 1:14:52Speaker 4: see the teams play and play to their ability and
- 1:14:55Speaker 4: not have anything. You know, it's almost like you're playing
- 1:14:57Speaker 4: left handed.
- 1:14:58Speaker 3: Purely for entertainment when the Patriots are not playing in
- 1:15:01Speaker 3: the game. So I'd like to be entertained.
- 1:15:03Speaker 4: Emotionally, like when you're watching, like when you go down
- 1:15:06Speaker 4: to Miami, you wouldn't rather have it be seventy five
- 1:15:08Speaker 4: degrees than ninety five degrees so you can play a
- 1:15:11Speaker 4: little bit closer to your capabilities. Of course you would.
- 1:15:15Speaker 5: Yeah, it's one. I mean it's one of the reasons
- 1:15:16Speaker 5: too why I thought that the College Football Playoff was
- 1:15:18Speaker 5: pretty cool, because I mean, not really weather related, but
- 1:15:21Speaker 5: just go into those old stadiums playing the old bowl games.
- 1:15:23Speaker 4: You know, they I wouldn't be surprised that they like
- 1:15:25Speaker 4: another round of home field for next year's.
- 1:15:30Speaker 2: Eight five five Pats five hundred is the TPX hutline.
- 1:15:33Speaker 15: We got.
- 1:15:34Speaker 2: A couple of people have been holding on. Brandon is
- 1:15:36Speaker 2: in Indiana. What's up Brandon?
- 1:15:40Speaker 15: Hey, guys, first time caller here is soon.
- 1:15:42Speaker 7: To thank you for having me on.
- 1:15:43Speaker 2: Well, thanks for holding on quick, Thank you for you.
- 1:15:45Speaker 15: Yep, what receiver this offseason, whether it's in the draft
- 1:15:50Speaker 15: or free agency, do you guys think is the best
- 1:15:52Speaker 15: fit for the Patriots.
- 1:15:54Speaker 2: In the McDaniel's offense, for the in particular the McDaniel's offense.
- 1:15:59Speaker 4: I'm gonna go for that, Like you're probably looking at
- 1:16:04Speaker 4: a guy's skill set for mc daniel's offense in a
- 1:16:06Speaker 4: different way than me. I'm just gonna go talent and
- 1:16:08Speaker 4: say T Higgins.
- 1:16:09Speaker 3: But like, yeah, I don't think it necessarily I'm kind
- 1:16:14Speaker 3: of with you, Paul, Like I don't think it necessarily
- 1:16:16Speaker 3: sways me one way or the other where I'd prioritize
- 1:16:19Speaker 3: this player over that player, And in fact, I just
- 1:16:22Speaker 3: learning from their mistakes, Like I feel like that's how
- 1:16:24Speaker 3: they got into this mess. At wide receiver to an extent,
- 1:16:27Speaker 3: was searching for a certain type of receiver versus just
- 1:16:31Speaker 3: taking the best overall player at that position. I think
- 1:16:34Speaker 3: that's why you ended up with Jalen Polk over Lad
- 1:16:36Speaker 3: McConkie is because you were looking for a certain type
- 1:16:39Speaker 3: of receiver. I mean, if I had to pick one,
- 1:16:42Speaker 3: you know the guy that I look at and I say,
- 1:16:44Speaker 3: you know that that's a really good fit in this offense,
- 1:16:48Speaker 3: Matthew Golden from Texas would probably be my pick. Reminds
- 1:16:52Speaker 3: me a lot of like Dion branch or Troy Brown,
- 1:16:54Speaker 3: like that type of receiver. But I don't I don't
- 1:16:57Speaker 3: think it's necessarily necessarily like say, I'm taking Matt the
- 1:17:02Speaker 3: Golden over Ted McMillan just because he fits the system better.
- 1:17:05Speaker 2: If you could trade for any receiver realistic trade AJ
- 1:17:11Speaker 2: Brown a J Brown?
- 1:17:13Speaker 4: Yeah, anything nudging him to the realistic category for the
- 1:17:18Speaker 4: sake of this argument, will it will.
- 1:17:19Speaker 3: It to be a J. Brown? I think? Is you
- 1:17:21Speaker 3: know you can't go wrong with AJ Brown, like he's
- 1:17:23Speaker 3: going to fit any system.
- 1:17:24Speaker 4: Do we mention that that that sort of report about
- 1:17:28Speaker 4: the Tyreek kill thing. Jeremy, according to an NFC expects
- 1:17:32Speaker 4: the Patriots Brandon if they can't get a receiver in
- 1:17:35Speaker 4: free agency, they can't get t Higgins. You know they
- 1:17:39Speaker 4: would be interested in making a trade for Tyreek Hill.
- 1:17:41Speaker 4: I am not overly interested in that. Yeah, I'm not either,
- 1:17:44Speaker 4: but although the price would be right.
- 1:17:46Speaker 5: I mean, he did quit on the field, right, It's like.
- 1:17:50Speaker 2: Do I really want that? And like maybe he comes
- 1:17:52Speaker 2: here and he's a perfect citizen.
- 1:17:54Speaker 5: You know, it was like and I would I mean,
- 1:17:57Speaker 5: I it was Jyalen Waddle who was like to you
- 1:18:00Speaker 5: out and like it was just him on the field,
- 1:18:02Speaker 5: like during the game, being like I'm out, I'm out,
- 1:18:04Speaker 5: like like I mean literally having a conversation like on
- 1:18:06Speaker 5: the field.
- 1:18:08Speaker 4: I don't know, I look at that something relevant Cheatah.
- 1:18:12Speaker 3: Yeah. I love Tyreek Hill. I think he's one of
- 1:18:15Speaker 3: the best receivers in the NFL. I just I don't
- 1:18:18Speaker 3: for a team that's trying to rebuild culture and rebuild
- 1:18:21Speaker 3: the lot. You know, all these receivers come with a
- 1:18:25Speaker 3: little bit of that baggage at times, but you just
- 1:18:27Speaker 3: want it to be constructive, like you want it to
- 1:18:30Speaker 3: be pointed in the right direction.
- 1:18:31Speaker 2: Yeh. Let's see Kale is in Iowa. Hey Kale, Hi, guys.
- 1:18:38Speaker 8: I wanted to say thanks for all you guys do
- 1:18:41Speaker 8: and all the hard work and time you put in,
- 1:18:43Speaker 8: especially over your lunch breaks, which I know Hardy will
- 1:18:46Speaker 8: never understand.
- 1:18:47Speaker 2: No, they they'd rather take six breaks per hour.
- 1:18:51Speaker 3: Right Exactly.
- 1:18:55Speaker 8: My question today and I hope it doesn't gain any
- 1:18:57Speaker 8: in trouble is about ownership and their decision making process
- 1:19:01Speaker 8: when it comes to hiring coaches. I feel like over
- 1:19:05Speaker 8: the time the Crafts have owned the team, they have
- 1:19:09Speaker 8: made some snap decisions when it came to hiring coaches
- 1:19:13Speaker 8: that have really panned out. And I think that without
- 1:19:18Speaker 8: Tom Brady, Bill Belichick would have been another one of
- 1:19:20Speaker 8: those coaches, which I know is a big ask, but
- 1:19:23Speaker 8: I feel like drafting him in the sixth round wasn't
- 1:19:27Speaker 8: like they identified bad talent. So ied ton't know what
- 1:19:31Speaker 8: you guys felt like, If Mike Brabell doesn't pan out,
- 1:19:35Speaker 8: should the craft look at a different way to hire
- 1:19:38Speaker 8: coaches or somebody else to be in that process.
- 1:19:43Speaker 2: Well, listen, I can understand. I mean, certainly with Mayo,
- 1:19:46Speaker 2: they it was a colossal mistake. You know, I'm not
- 1:19:50Speaker 2: going to be a fraud. At the time, I was
- 1:19:52Speaker 2: hoping it could work out, but it was based on faith.
- 1:19:56Speaker 2: It wasn't based on track record or anything else. It
- 1:19:59Speaker 2: was just based on faith and faith in Robert Craft's instincts,
- 1:20:06Speaker 2: you know, because that's all it was. That's all it
- 1:20:09Speaker 2: was based on, and that is not a way to
- 1:20:11Speaker 2: hire a head coach. And he admitted that afterwards.
- 1:20:14Speaker 4: Uh that, But I would just push back a little
- 1:20:16Speaker 4: bit and say, I don't think Bill Belichick was a
- 1:20:18Speaker 4: snap decision. I think that was a decision four years
- 1:20:21Speaker 4: in the making.
- 1:20:21Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:20:22Speaker 2: I think what Cale might be saying is, had Tom
- 1:20:24Speaker 2: Brady not come along and they continued to kind of
- 1:20:27Speaker 2: found or would they have given up on him early?
- 1:20:29Speaker 1: Oh?
- 1:20:29Speaker 4: I think they might. I think he might have been
- 1:20:31Speaker 4: in trouble.
- 1:20:31Speaker 2: Is that what you're saying, Cale?
- 1:20:33Speaker 12: Yeah?
- 1:20:34Speaker 8: And also with Bill Belichick, you can look at the
- 1:20:37Speaker 8: when he was talking to believe Her edwards, he made
- 1:20:39Speaker 8: a comment about how he thought he was on the
- 1:20:41Speaker 8: chopping block.
- 1:20:42Speaker 4: No, I know he was in trouble. I mean, that's
- 1:20:44Speaker 4: that's a fact.
- 1:20:45Speaker 8: Because you traded a first round pick. So not only
- 1:20:48Speaker 8: did you make that decision, and maybe it was four
- 1:20:50Speaker 8: years in the making, but if that had been a failure,
- 1:20:54Speaker 8: not only did you make that decision based on instinct,
- 1:20:58Speaker 8: but you traded something very valuable for the franchise.
- 1:21:03Speaker 4: Yeah, and Cale, but I'm having a hard time getting
- 1:21:06Speaker 4: a guy in trouble for making that move, like you
- 1:21:10Speaker 4: got the greatest coach has ever done it.
- 1:21:12Speaker 2: I know. But but Cale, here's the thing, And I
- 1:21:14Speaker 2: get what you're saying, like maybe they limited the pool
- 1:21:18Speaker 2: of people they talked to, even in the Belichick case,
- 1:21:21Speaker 2: but if you look around the league, most of these
- 1:21:25Speaker 2: teams when it comes to the head coach know who
- 1:21:27Speaker 2: they're going to get. I mean, you look at the Bears.
- 1:21:30Speaker 2: The minute that the Lions were out of contention, they
- 1:21:33Speaker 2: hired Ben Johnson. You know, it's not like they did
- 1:21:36Speaker 2: this extensive shirt. They could talk to a million people
- 1:21:39Speaker 2: before the Bears, but they knew they wanted Ben Johnson
- 1:21:43Speaker 2: and that's why they waited. And most teams are like that.
- 1:21:45Speaker 2: Don't A lot of this is nonsense.
- 1:21:48Speaker 4: You know, take of this argument. You probably don't want
- 1:21:50Speaker 4: to compare yourself to the Bears.
- 1:21:52Speaker 2: No, But I'm just saying most teams identify the head
- 1:21:55Speaker 2: coach that they want pretty early on, pretty early on.
- 1:22:00Speaker 8: Agree with that. I would push back a little bit
- 1:22:03Speaker 8: with the Belichick thing, where if you look at it
- 1:22:05Speaker 8: in a vacuum, it looks the way it does, but
- 1:22:08Speaker 8: when stacked up with all the other ones, I'm not
- 1:22:11Speaker 8: saying I more think maybe they should look at a
- 1:22:14Speaker 8: different way. I'm not saying they have got interview a
- 1:22:18Speaker 8: thousand candidates or twenty, but maybe the things that they're
- 1:22:22Speaker 8: looking for they should adjust.
- 1:22:26Speaker 2: Yep. I mean you could make the case that maybe,
- 1:22:28Speaker 2: you know, they take people who they're comfortable with, people
- 1:22:31Speaker 2: who they're knowledgeable about it. Maybe, you know, maybe the world.
- 1:22:35Speaker 4: I don't know any other way to do it.
- 1:22:38Speaker 2: It's not like we've had a lot of head coaches
- 1:22:40Speaker 2: since Kraft bought the team. You know, you had Carsels,
- 1:22:43Speaker 2: who he inherited, he hired Carol went to Belichick, who
- 1:22:47Speaker 2: last for twenty years, and then you had Mayo and
- 1:22:49Speaker 2: now Vrabel.
- 1:22:50Speaker 4: You know, so I would say that, you know, you
- 1:22:53Speaker 4: definitely understand the criticism of how they went about the
- 1:22:56Speaker 4: Mayo situation, and I think you could understand that people
- 1:22:59Speaker 4: thought this was sort of a set up with Rabel.
- 1:23:02Speaker 4: I would kind of compare this a little bit more
- 1:23:04Speaker 4: to check in that I think they kind of really
- 1:23:07Speaker 4: thought thought long and hard about Rabel last year and
- 1:23:09Speaker 4: felt like they couldn't do it because they had already
- 1:23:12Speaker 4: done that contractual thing with Mayo and didn't want to
- 1:23:15Speaker 4: go back on it. But I think that they they
- 1:23:17Speaker 4: thought long and hard about Rabel last year. Yeah, I
- 1:23:19Speaker 4: think because I don't think they expected him to be available.
- 1:23:22Speaker 12: Yeah.
- 1:23:22Speaker 3: I think about the.
- 1:23:23Speaker 5: Jets process because they interviewed everybody under the sun, but
- 1:23:25Speaker 5: then they ultimately went to back to a player who
- 1:23:28Speaker 5: had played under them.
- 1:23:29Speaker 4: Jets.
- 1:23:31Speaker 3: Coach they've hired for twenty years, but it's the.
- 1:23:33Speaker 4: Guy that wanted them too, Like that's the big difference
- 1:23:36Speaker 4: to me.
- 1:23:36Speaker 2: And don't remember, don't forget that they hired this outside
- 1:23:40Speaker 2: firm led by Mike Tannenbaum to do this search.
- 1:23:44Speaker 4: Like I said, I just don't know how different ways
- 1:23:45Speaker 4: there are to do.
- 1:23:46Speaker 2: Earn his money. He's got to earn his money.
- 1:23:48Speaker 5: Well that's what it like like that, And that's a
- 1:23:51Speaker 5: good comparison, because would it make you know, people like
- 1:23:53Speaker 5: kill feel better if they had hired a search firm,
- 1:23:56Speaker 5: gone through all this and then ultimately just ended up
- 1:23:58Speaker 5: with Rabel. But hey, we interviewed twenty six guys. Does
- 1:24:00Speaker 5: that make you feel better the way? Or do you
- 1:24:03Speaker 5: think that they probably were gonna end up with Aaron Glenn?
- 1:24:05Speaker 5: Probably no matter who they interviewed.
- 1:24:07Speaker 3: I just think in this process to the Patriots were
- 1:24:11Speaker 3: the number one destination. I think they had the best
- 1:24:15Speaker 3: opening available on the market. So in my mind, they
- 1:24:19Speaker 3: they interviewed the two best candidates, Mike Rabel and Ben Johnson,
- 1:24:23Speaker 3: and they had to pick of the litters. So why
- 1:24:25Speaker 3: they don't have to go all the way down to
- 1:24:27Speaker 3: Liam Kohane and you know, Joe Brady at end point,
- 1:24:31Speaker 3: why would they waste Why would anybody waste each other's
- 1:24:34Speaker 3: time in that situation. So you could definitely make the
- 1:24:38Speaker 3: case that maybe they should have looked harder at Ben Johnson.
- 1:24:41Speaker 3: But Ben Johnson took the Bears job sight unseen. He
- 1:24:44Speaker 3: didn't They didn't even meet in person. They did the
- 1:24:46Speaker 3: virtual thing and they just gave him the job off
- 1:24:49Speaker 3: of the virtual interview. So it would have been quick
- 1:24:52Speaker 3: anyways if it was Ben Johnson after the Lions were eliminated,
- 1:24:55Speaker 3: and I think the Lions were eliminated a lot sooner
- 1:24:58Speaker 3: than people expected, which also in acted that. But at
- 1:25:01Speaker 3: the end of the day, they had the best job.
- 1:25:04Speaker 3: They knew it. They had two prime candidates. They interviewed
- 1:25:08Speaker 3: both guys and they yes, they went with the guy
- 1:25:10Speaker 3: that they were a little bit more comfortable with and
- 1:25:12Speaker 3: more familiar with. But I can't fault them for not
- 1:25:16Speaker 3: having this whole exhaustive, extensive search because they're not. Thankfully,
- 1:25:20Speaker 3: they're not the Raiders. They're not the Jaguars who nobody
- 1:25:23Speaker 3: wants to coach the Jaguars like they can't get Liam
- 1:25:26Speaker 3: Cohone to take the job, like they want to give
- 1:25:28Speaker 3: him the job.
- 1:25:29Speaker 2: Happened there because they after he pulled out, then they
- 1:25:32Speaker 2: fired Bulky.
- 1:25:33Speaker 4: Yeah, because he probably said they're having a hard time
- 1:25:36Speaker 4: getting people really interested because.
- 1:25:38Speaker 3: Of right, and then the Raiders are. I wonder if
- 1:25:40Speaker 3: get back in the mix now he could.
- 1:25:42Speaker 4: I think, well, I think he well, not that it
- 1:25:44Speaker 4: prohibits him. I think he signed an extension on Tampa,
- 1:25:47Speaker 4: but I would be I think Robert Sala might be
- 1:25:51Speaker 4: in line there now. But you know, to Evan's point
- 1:25:53Speaker 4: about the Jets, it is like they there's like four
- 1:25:56Speaker 4: or five first time defensive minded coaches offensive orient to
- 1:26:00Speaker 4: coll It's Rex Ryan, it's Todd Bowles, it's Robert Sala.
- 1:26:05Speaker 3: My whole life, they've had the same coach except Adam
- 1:26:07Speaker 3: Gasee for two years.
- 1:26:08Speaker 4: Adam gaze was the one outlier. He was an offensive Yeah, but.
- 1:26:11Speaker 3: They herm Edwards, Rex Ryan.
- 1:26:14Speaker 2: That's funny.
- 1:26:15Speaker 3: Todd Bowles.
- 1:26:16Speaker 4: What do you think that is?
- 1:26:17Speaker 5: They got a tight go al grow for one year?
- 1:26:20Speaker 3: Yeah, Bart and I did this on Catch twenty two yesterday,
- 1:26:23Speaker 3: were like the Jets just hired the same head coach
- 1:26:25Speaker 3: over and over again. Like you could argue that Aaron Glennon,
- 1:26:27Speaker 3: Todd Bowles and Rex Ryan and like all these guys
- 1:26:31Speaker 3: are the same guy.
- 1:26:31Speaker 4: First time coach is defensive coordinators. Yeah, that's what they
- 1:26:36Speaker 4: maybe maybe Robert Salad like they all Robert Sala, Todd Bowles,
- 1:26:41Speaker 4: Rex Ryan.
- 1:26:42Speaker 2: Yea is interesting. Patty's an aga? What's up? Patty?
- 1:26:48Speaker 15: Everyone?
- 1:26:49Speaker 12: Hey?
- 1:26:49Speaker 2: Hey Patty?
- 1:26:51Speaker 9: Uh?
- 1:26:52Speaker 15: Two part Senior Bowl question, Evan, are you going by yourself?
- 1:26:56Speaker 15: Are you taking deuce with you? Because I know Alex
- 1:26:58Speaker 15: isn't going and position group aside from like receiver and
- 1:27:03Speaker 15: offensive lineman, are you most interested to see down there?
- 1:27:06Speaker 15: I'm interested to hear what you have to say about
- 1:27:08Speaker 15: the tight end because I think it's not a break class,
- 1:27:11Speaker 15: but it's got a few good tight ends. And fred
- 1:27:14Speaker 15: I went through at least just the NFC and AFC
- 1:27:18Speaker 15: championship history, the only real underdog that I saw that
- 1:27:23Speaker 15: won in a cold weather game. I mean, there's a
- 1:27:27Speaker 15: two thousand and seven Giants, but they're a cold weather
- 1:27:29Speaker 15: team that won in Green Bay, but was the tow
- 1:27:32Speaker 15: Tampa Bay Buccaneers. They were four point underdogs and they
- 1:27:35Speaker 15: had never prior to winning that game in Philly. I
- 1:27:37Speaker 15: don't think they had ever won a game where the
- 1:27:40Speaker 15: temperatures were below freezing. And that's all I got. I'll
- 1:27:43Speaker 15: take the stuff air.
- 1:27:44Speaker 12: Yeah.
- 1:27:44Speaker 4: I appreciate the research because, as Patty knows, I'm too
- 1:27:47Speaker 4: lazy to do it myself. But I think that that
- 1:27:49Speaker 4: Giants Packers game would be an example of one. Now,
- 1:27:53Speaker 4: that game was not played as it would normally be
- 1:27:55Speaker 4: played very cool. That hurt the better team.
- 1:27:57Speaker 2: Man, Green Bay, hurt Tom Copplin's face.
- 1:28:00Speaker 4: Even even though both of those teams are cold weather teams.
- 1:28:03Speaker 4: You did not play that game like you would play
- 1:28:06Speaker 4: again in the middle of November.
- 1:28:08Speaker 6: Brandon Jacob, I just.
- 1:28:09Speaker 3: Remember watching that game, being like, the Giants are gonna win,
- 1:28:13Speaker 3: and they're gonna beat us in the Super Bowl again.
- 1:28:15Speaker 3: He just knew, like you knew, You're like, I was
- 1:28:18Speaker 3: rooting hard for the Packers. I was like we can
- 1:28:20Speaker 3: take the Packers. That's fine.
- 1:28:22Speaker 4: The tenor the tenor in the offices stadium with us
- 1:28:26Speaker 4: not not football was a lot different, you're.
- 1:28:29Speaker 5: Saying because you beat them once and you felt like
- 1:28:31Speaker 5: we got these guys.
- 1:28:31Speaker 6: It's Eli Manning.
- 1:28:33Speaker 4: I just didn't think they go to the team.
- 1:28:35Speaker 3: Man I just thought we were cursed against the Giants.
- 1:28:38Speaker 2: I knew it.
- 1:28:39Speaker 6: They played good.
- 1:28:40Speaker 2: Uh Teas in Virginia. Hey, Tea Higgins t yeah, Hey, hey.
- 1:28:47Speaker 8: Hey, this is more of all season question, but.
- 1:28:52Speaker 14: It's more for you.
- 1:28:53Speaker 8: You're you're close to my age. Sorry, got everybody first,
- 1:28:57Speaker 8: But has anybody ever been able to convince their spouse,
- 1:29:01Speaker 8: you know, to give your child a Patriots and spirname.
- 1:29:05Speaker 8: My oldest child is thick and either boy, and I
- 1:29:08Speaker 8: was able to convince my wife to name him Julian,
- 1:29:11Speaker 8: and then she wasn't gonna go for Tom or Brady.
- 1:29:15Speaker 3: No.
- 1:29:15Speaker 5: No, still early if you evant, though you have some
- 1:29:18Speaker 5: I don't have any children, well probably Kyle, right, maybe.
- 1:29:21Speaker 3: One name dogs after Patriots. No, I I don't. I
- 1:29:26Speaker 3: don't have anybody in my family that that did that. No,
- 1:29:30Speaker 3: and I don't plan on doing that.
- 1:29:32Speaker 2: I was named after my dad. He was named after
- 1:29:34Speaker 2: his dad. That's the way it goes. My son grandfathers
- 1:29:39Speaker 2: also Zach in New Hampshire. On one of the more
- 1:29:43Speaker 2: recent episodes, a caller asked Evan specifically to explain what
- 1:29:47Speaker 2: an XY slot, et cetera means from an X and
- 1:29:50Speaker 2: NO standpoint, and it seemed that Mike was a bit
- 1:29:52Speaker 2: offended that the caller singled out Evan because Mike could
- 1:29:55Speaker 2: also explain that concept. Could Perhaps every time Evan explains
- 1:29:59Speaker 2: things from in depth perspective, if you all didn't bust
- 1:30:02Speaker 2: his balls for being a ball knower, callers might be
- 1:30:05Speaker 2: more likely to look for everyone's input. We all have
- 1:30:08Speaker 2: football opinions, but not all of us know ball, and
- 1:30:11Speaker 2: we look to those that do in order to be
- 1:30:13Speaker 2: more informed in our opinions.
- 1:30:15Speaker 4: Correct so it alone, I know one of them.
- 1:30:19Speaker 3: I knew Mike knew what he was talking that I
- 1:30:21Speaker 3: said no for it.
- 1:30:22Speaker 5: No, But you know that's uh, I mean, that's one
- 1:30:24Speaker 5: of the things I loved when I got into writing
- 1:30:26Speaker 5: ball football was trying to learn and I haven't like
- 1:30:28Speaker 5: dove into it at the level of Evan, who's you know,
- 1:30:31Speaker 5: getting playbooks and you.
- 1:30:32Speaker 6: Know, breaking it down.
- 1:30:33Speaker 5: But you know, there's a base level of knowledge that
- 1:30:35Speaker 5: you know, understanding what the positions are called, and you
- 1:30:37Speaker 5: know generally, I mean, I'm alread of the defensive side
- 1:30:39Speaker 5: of the ball, but I talked to Evans defensive guy.
- 1:30:41Speaker 4: I don't know if you know that.
- 1:30:42Speaker 5: No, we we had we talked to a little defense
- 1:30:44Speaker 5: ball today because I was, you know, interested, uh, you know,
- 1:30:46Speaker 5: I know the Patriots traditional three fourths usually two gappers
- 1:30:49Speaker 5: up front, and I always wondered, you know, do you
- 1:30:51Speaker 5: do you mix and match that?
- 1:30:52Speaker 4: Do you have?
- 1:30:53Speaker 5: You know, this side of the ball is going to
- 1:30:54Speaker 5: two gap and then over here we're going to have
- 1:30:56Speaker 5: a you know guy one gap and getting up the field.
- 1:30:58Speaker 4: So you know, we we have we talked about all
- 1:30:59Speaker 4: time favorite memories in the locker room. So when I
- 1:31:02Speaker 4: came here, I didn't really know a lot of those
- 1:31:04Speaker 4: terms at all. Like I don't really five techniques, I
- 1:31:08Speaker 4: don't use a lot of that stuff twenty five, twenty
- 1:31:11Speaker 4: six years later or whatever it is, but like two
- 1:31:14Speaker 4: gapping and all that stuff, I had never heard that
- 1:31:16Speaker 4: term in my life when I started working here. And
- 1:31:19Speaker 4: then you know, Pete Carroll had the old elephant position
- 1:31:22Speaker 4: and remember all that stuff, and you sort of learn
- 1:31:24Speaker 4: those things. Belichick comes two gap Anthony Pleasant. You know,
- 1:31:30Speaker 4: he's a bill guy. He's like one of those you know,
- 1:31:32Speaker 4: gotta circle the wagon guys. Anthony Pleasant talking to him
- 1:31:36Speaker 4: about two gapping, he gives me this look and I
- 1:31:39Speaker 4: just stopped in the middle of just me and him,
- 1:31:41Speaker 4: and I go, uh, did I get that really wrong?
- 1:31:43Speaker 4: He goes, no, no, no, you're pretty good. You're pretty good.
- 1:31:45Speaker 4: Keep going. I go, that's about all I got. It
- 1:31:47Speaker 4: was like we had this like just like looking at it.
- 1:31:50Speaker 4: He's like he could tell that I was faking it
- 1:31:53Speaker 4: and that I didn't know what I was talking about.
- 1:31:54Speaker 4: He could absolutely.
- 1:31:55Speaker 5: I would say for me, I understand more than I'm
- 1:31:58Speaker 5: comfortable trying to express and explained to people, if that
- 1:32:01Speaker 5: makes sense, Like I'm not really comfortable of rattling off
- 1:32:04Speaker 5: things and like that. Like I but I think I
- 1:32:06Speaker 5: understand enough that I feel pretty colm.
- 1:32:08Speaker 4: I think people that cover the game, for the most part,
- 1:32:11Speaker 4: understand enough. I don't think you have to have sort
- 1:32:14Speaker 4: of a PhD, you know, like Evan. I don't say
- 1:32:16Speaker 4: that disrespectfully. I say it honestly. I mean, I think
- 1:32:20Speaker 4: that's great if that's something that really interests you and you.
- 1:32:23Speaker 2: But I think it's changed now with the access to
- 1:32:25Speaker 2: the All twenty two that used to be forbidden.
- 1:32:28Speaker 6: Yeah, no, I remember pushing back.
- 1:32:30Speaker 2: I want to get access to that. Now writers and
- 1:32:32Speaker 2: ball Knower's are allowed to watch the All twenty two, right, And.
- 1:32:38Speaker 4: I think a lot of people are interested in that,
- 1:32:40Speaker 4: and that's great for those people. I'm more interested in
- 1:32:43Speaker 4: reporting and analyzing what I'm seeing as opposed to breaking
- 1:32:48Speaker 4: down like if I if I covered the White House,
- 1:32:51Speaker 4: I wouldn't necessarily be overly interested in, you know, sort
- 1:32:54Speaker 4: of all the processes that go on within Congress and
- 1:32:58Speaker 4: you know, filibustering and and all that. I want to
- 1:33:01Speaker 4: report on what's going on. I want to report on
- 1:33:03Speaker 4: the results I think what it means.
- 1:33:06Speaker 3: I think the biggest reason why I steered towards the
- 1:33:09Speaker 3: other stuff is because nowadays, especially that side of it
- 1:33:14Speaker 3: has become really, really difficult to break into because you
- 1:33:18Speaker 3: have you have to have sources, and you have to
- 1:33:20Speaker 3: be connected, and you have to have you know, a
- 1:33:23Speaker 3: network and all that kind of stuff, and it's it's
- 1:33:26Speaker 3: difficult to build that, whereas on the outside, when you're
- 1:33:30Speaker 3: not here every single day, you can watch All twenty
- 1:33:33Speaker 3: two in your your you can learn about the game
- 1:33:37Speaker 3: I and you can do it that way, right, So
- 1:33:39Speaker 3: I think that's why it's become more popular. But lately
- 1:33:41Speaker 3: I've been getting down the rabbit hole of cadence and
- 1:33:45Speaker 3: like the importance of cadence, and I find it fascinating.
- 1:33:50Speaker 3: And I won't give out any state secrets, but like
- 1:33:52Speaker 3: obviously the Patriots with McDaniels will now have a whole
- 1:33:57Speaker 3: how do they get the offense started? Like how you
- 1:34:00Speaker 3: actually get to like cadence And it's it's fascinating to me.
- 1:34:04Speaker 3: And like sometimes it's just first sound, sometimes there's words.
- 1:34:08Speaker 3: Sometimes it's you know, we're going on the second sound,
- 1:34:11Speaker 3: and you know, there's all sorts of different things about
- 1:34:13Speaker 3: the cadence and like it's so important because the time
- 1:34:17Speaker 3: it's all timing right, it's like all timing up, like
- 1:34:19Speaker 3: you know, when you snap the ball, like these everybody's
- 1:34:22Speaker 3: got to be firing off the ball at the same time,
- 1:34:24Speaker 3: otherwise the play doesn't work. And it's fascinating.
- 1:34:28Speaker 5: Here we go, Oh jeez, I'm the basic one onto.
- 1:34:34Speaker 1: Uh.
- 1:34:34Speaker 5: The comparison I always make though, is the weather. You know,
- 1:34:36Speaker 5: some people will tell you what the baramount metric pressure
- 1:34:39Speaker 5: is and all this, and other people just want to
- 1:34:41Speaker 5: know if it's raining, you know, that's you know, like
- 1:34:43Speaker 5: that's but you know, some people the weather interesting, you know, Right,
- 1:34:49Speaker 5: So this is going.
- 1:34:50Speaker 4: To come as a big surprise. But I tend to
- 1:34:52Speaker 4: like drama I kind of created. But so that's kind
- 1:34:57Speaker 4: of what more interests me, Like sort of when you
- 1:35:01Speaker 4: know this particular year and it's obviously it's stunk for
- 1:35:05Speaker 4: us because we went four and thirteen, But when you're
- 1:35:08Speaker 4: hearing stuff out of the locker room, you know, almost
- 1:35:11Speaker 4: on a weekly basis, you get some really good stuff
- 1:35:14Speaker 4: out of the locker room. And I'm not telling you
- 1:35:15Speaker 4: I want to lose to get that, That's not what
- 1:35:17Speaker 4: I'm saying. But as a reporter, you sort of separate
- 1:35:21Speaker 4: yourself from the wins and losses. Well you should. It
- 1:35:24Speaker 4: doesn't happen often enough, but you should separate yourself from
- 1:35:28Speaker 4: the wins and losses. And now and you're like, okay,
- 1:35:30Speaker 4: if you're going to lose, I mean, obviously it's more
- 1:35:32Speaker 4: fun to go to Super Bowls and cover super Bowls
- 1:35:34Speaker 4: and have that success.
- 1:35:35Speaker 5: Give me the drama.
- 1:35:37Speaker 4: Give me the drama.
- 1:35:38Speaker 6: Tell me what's going on, and the story.
- 1:35:40Speaker 4: And that's the LIFEbeat. I think. You know, a guy
- 1:35:42Speaker 4: like Andrew Callahan, I thought did a good job of
- 1:35:44Speaker 4: getting some of that drama out of the locker room
- 1:35:47Speaker 4: this year that you can't get necessarily to do that.
- 1:35:50Speaker 5: Yeah, it's why I like football because there's so many
- 1:35:52Speaker 5: different ways to approach it, to cover it, to talk
- 1:35:54Speaker 5: about it. I mean, I love the game of hockey,
- 1:35:56Speaker 5: but I just I couldn't ever analyze it. It's just
- 1:35:59Speaker 5: like it's kind of a fluid game and you're not
- 1:36:00Speaker 5: going to sit there and break down plays. It's you know,
- 1:36:02Speaker 5: little moments.
- 1:36:03Speaker 6: It's like it just kind of happens. It's organic.
- 1:36:05Speaker 4: You know, he's better than the guy, right he's and he.
- 1:36:08Speaker 5: Skated through everyone and the scores. You know, it's not
- 1:36:11Speaker 5: you know, Evan can get into the schemes of it all.
- 1:36:13Speaker 4: You know, you can talk about all the different.
- 1:36:15Speaker 5: Situations and clock management and now it's it's what makes
- 1:36:18Speaker 5: it such a great support.
- 1:36:19Speaker 3: But I feel like that's what you know, makes us
- 1:36:22Speaker 3: and like me and Barth, like Paul and you guys
- 1:36:25Speaker 3: like kind of see the big picture sometimes that I
- 1:36:27Speaker 3: don't see because you know.
- 1:36:29Speaker 4: Why the kingmaker brought you in.
- 1:36:30Speaker 3: Yeah, because like that happens to me all the time.
- 1:36:33Speaker 3: It used to be drags, Like Drags would be like
- 1:36:35Speaker 3: they just got beat and I'd be like, no, like
- 1:36:37Speaker 3: there's this seventeen million x's and those things that happen.
- 1:36:40Speaker 3: He's like, Nope, they were just better.
- 1:36:41Speaker 4: You're and you're probably right right, but there are a
- 1:36:44Speaker 4: million different things. That's what you always you know, like
- 1:36:46Speaker 4: when you hear the cooking, we just got to execute better. Yeah, yeah, right,
- 1:36:50Speaker 4: really you mean when you ran that play you thought
- 1:36:52Speaker 4: it was going to lose three yards? Of course you
- 1:36:55Speaker 4: have to execute better.
- 1:36:56Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 1:36:57Speaker 5: Plus, it's like twenty two guys on the field, and
- 1:36:59Speaker 5: it's like, you know, you can pick up something new
- 1:37:01Speaker 5: every time you watch it.
- 1:37:02Speaker 6: Stop callers, All.
- 1:37:05Speaker 2: Right, little programming note. I have to leave early because
- 1:37:08Speaker 2: I have a meeting at two, So we'll get get
- 1:37:11Speaker 2: to the pits and then you guys can continue. There's
- 1:37:13Speaker 2: a lot of emails that came in. We want to
- 1:37:15Speaker 2: get to them, so we're gonna do. Yeah, we have to.
- 1:37:19Speaker 2: I have to get going.
- 1:37:20Speaker 4: What time you're leaving pretty soon? Pretty soon?
- 1:37:26Speaker 2: Gotta hurry, all right, Paul, what happened last week? All right?
- 1:37:30Speaker 4: So what do I got here? Last week, Mike and
- 1:37:35Speaker 4: Paul went three and one, Evan and Fred went one
- 1:37:39Speaker 4: and three. Alex got an incomplete she did not show up.
- 1:37:46Speaker 4: Uh with the spread Mike three oh and one. Wow,
- 1:37:52Speaker 4: good job, Mike, Paul and Fred won two in one
- 1:37:57Speaker 4: and Evan oh three and one.
- 1:37:59Speaker 3: I just started picking with my heart.
- 1:38:01Speaker 6: You got cocky.
- 1:38:03Speaker 4: So overall for the playoffs, Mike and Paul are eight
- 1:38:06Speaker 4: and two. Let's see Evan is five and five, Fred
- 1:38:10Speaker 4: is four and six. With the spread. This is pretty impressive.
- 1:38:14Speaker 4: Michael seven to two and one playoff money, followed by Paul
- 1:38:18Speaker 4: at five to four and one, then Fred at three
- 1:38:22Speaker 4: six and one, and Evan two seven and one, and
- 1:38:26Speaker 4: we all hit on the national championship.
- 1:38:30Speaker 2: I have a lot this week.
- 1:38:32Speaker 4: I'm getting to that. I'm getting to that. Sorry the folks,
- 1:38:37Speaker 4: this is your lock of the week. Pick was a
- 1:38:39Speaker 4: push push push. Fred had the Rams getting six. They
- 1:38:45Speaker 4: lost by six. Interesting, So all right that that catches
- 1:38:50Speaker 4: us up.
- 1:38:51Speaker 2: So let's get to Sunday's games. Two games left before
- 1:38:55Speaker 2: the Super Bowl. Three o'clock on Sunday, Fox and Fox
- 1:38:59Speaker 2: the Fortes. It's the twelve and five Commanders visiting the
- 1:39:04Speaker 2: fourteen and three Eagles.
- 1:39:07Speaker 4: The Iggles by six six.
- 1:39:10Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 1:39:11Speaker 5: I mean, Washington's a great story and I just was
- 1:39:13Speaker 5: really impressive with with Jayden Daniels and just the way
- 1:39:16Speaker 5: he throws the ball. It's pretty pretty to watch. Smooth,
- 1:39:18Speaker 5: smooth athlete can run. But I think they run out
- 1:39:21Speaker 5: of gas this week. I don't trust Jalen Hurts entirely though.
- 1:39:24Speaker 5: I'm gonna take Philly to win, but I'm gonna take
- 1:39:27Speaker 5: Washington to cover. I think it's a close game. I
- 1:39:29Speaker 5: think Jayden Daniels continues to play well, execute under pressure,
- 1:39:33Speaker 5: but I just I think Philly's got a little bit
- 1:39:35Speaker 5: too much, especially on the defensive side of the ball.
- 1:39:37Speaker 5: My only wild card is Jalen Hurts and his performance
- 1:39:40Speaker 5: throwing the.
- 1:39:40Speaker 8: Ball through the year.
- 1:39:43Speaker 3: Yeah, I feel the same way. I feel like I
- 1:39:46Speaker 3: can't pick the Eagles in a lot of ways because
- 1:39:48Speaker 3: I do think that the Commander's offense is just gonna
- 1:39:51Speaker 3: put points up, even if it's not as many as
- 1:39:54Speaker 3: last week. But I don't know if Philly can do
- 1:39:56Speaker 3: the same. I don't know if they can score it
- 1:39:58Speaker 3: with a run first offense, not a ton of passing game.
- 1:40:01Speaker 3: But I'm gonna take the Eagles. I I just I
- 1:40:05Speaker 3: keep on coming back to the fact that I feel
- 1:40:07Speaker 3: like the commanders are like a year ahead, maybe even
- 1:40:10Speaker 3: two years ahead with this run of where they really
- 1:40:13Speaker 3: should be, and I feel like that's eventually going to
- 1:40:15Speaker 3: catch up to them. That there may be a little
- 1:40:17Speaker 3: bit premature to be at this point.
- 1:40:22Speaker 4: It sounds like Evan was really close to picking the
- 1:40:25Speaker 4: upset outright, and I was too, And and like Evan,
- 1:40:28Speaker 4: I'm gonna wimp out and not do it. I just
- 1:40:31Speaker 4: in the back of my mind.
- 1:40:33Speaker 2: He's a rookie.
- 1:40:34Speaker 4: He's gotta he's got to be a rookie at some point, right,
- 1:40:37Speaker 4: He's got to have a mistake, and he's.
- 1:40:39Speaker 3: And everything is on his shoulders.
- 1:40:41Speaker 4: Like it's not that defense is pretty good. Philly's defense
- 1:40:43Speaker 4: is pretty good. Jalen Carter, Baby, Yeah, I mean at
- 1:40:47Speaker 4: some point I think there's a mistake I'm gonna take Philly.
- 1:40:50Speaker 4: I'm gonna take the.
- 1:40:50Speaker 6: Point trying to talk yourself.
- 1:40:51Speaker 4: I want to take the upset, but I'm I'm not
- 1:40:55Speaker 4: going to.
- 1:40:56Speaker 2: Yeah, I think the nice story continues. I sense a
- 1:41:00Speaker 2: quiet confidence among the commanders. I do respect Philly's defense.
- 1:41:05Speaker 2: I think it's going to be a close game in
- 1:41:06Speaker 2: the first half. But I think that Philly defense kind
- 1:41:10Speaker 2: of runs out of gas, believe it or not, in
- 1:41:12Speaker 2: the second half. And I think down the road the
- 1:41:14Speaker 2: commanders keep putting up points, and they went out right.
- 1:41:18Speaker 2: They went out right.
- 1:41:19Speaker 4: So can I ask, like in aside here talking about
- 1:41:23Speaker 4: the commanders, the quiet confidence and all this stuff. Any
- 1:41:26Speaker 4: does anybody look at Dan Quinn any differently? I mean
- 1:41:30Speaker 4: I always have to, I have to admit I do.
- 1:41:33Speaker 3: I always thought he was a decent coach.
- 1:41:34Speaker 2: Anyway, He's probably better than I thought. But you got
- 1:41:36Speaker 2: to turn that captain.
- 1:41:37Speaker 6: That's it for me.
- 1:41:38Speaker 4: The calf remember at the indort, recognized by Paul wants
- 1:41:45Speaker 4: to have an intelligent discussion.
- 1:41:47Speaker 3: I'm pretty, I'm pretty.
- 1:41:51Speaker 4: Who's here for the nonsense more than come on?
- 1:41:54Speaker 3: Deuce and I were sitting in the Indie airport coming
- 1:41:56Speaker 3: home from the combine, and we're sitting down to eat
- 1:41:59Speaker 3: some lunch, and I see this guy at the at
- 1:42:01Speaker 3: the bar and I jokingly said, oh, it's Dan It's
- 1:42:05Speaker 3: Dan Quinn. Because he had to have background.
- 1:42:06Speaker 4: It was Quinn. I just looked at it. Look. He
- 1:42:11Speaker 4: took the Falcons.
- 1:42:12Speaker 6: To the Super Bowl.
- 1:42:14Speaker 3: Kyle Shannon probably.
- 1:42:15Speaker 4: Should have won it right, But I think that's what
- 1:42:17Speaker 4: a lot of people said. He just wanted you guys.
- 1:42:19Speaker 4: You know, he's a Dan Campbell, Dan Campbell lights. You know,
- 1:42:22Speaker 4: he's bullied by his offensive coordinator. So he's within, you know,
- 1:42:27Speaker 4: a ridiculous sequence of plays from winning a Super Bowl
- 1:42:29Speaker 4: with the Falcons. That's like, that's no easy task, right.
- 1:42:34Speaker 4: He goes to Washington, which has been the worst franchise
- 1:42:37Speaker 4: in football for thirty years, and he had an hour
- 1:42:42Speaker 4: in the NFC Championship. I have to admit, I think
- 1:42:45Speaker 4: maybe he's got a little bit more going on than
- 1:42:46Speaker 4: I gave him credit for.
- 1:42:47Speaker 2: Yep. I just think if he just turned the cap around,
- 1:42:49Speaker 2: I thought.
- 1:42:50Speaker 4: It was just an uninspired retread higher.
- 1:42:53Speaker 12: Yeah.
- 1:42:54Speaker 3: No, I think, well, he definitely knows how to hire
- 1:42:56Speaker 3: offensive coordinators, that's for sure. But also he But I
- 1:43:00Speaker 3: would say the other thing though with him, that separates him,
- 1:43:02Speaker 3: in my opinion, from a guy like Dan Campbell's Dan
- 1:43:05Speaker 3: Quinkin can call a defense like Dan Quinn is a legitimate,
- 1:43:08Speaker 3: well in Dallas defensive coordinator. I did, I mean in
- 1:43:11Speaker 3: Seattle he was the guy. So like that's the difference,
- 1:43:15Speaker 3: I think, But you know, I hope is the same
- 1:43:17Speaker 3: thing with Rabel is, like those guys could be defensive
- 1:43:20Speaker 3: coordinators as just as easily as they could have been
- 1:43:22Speaker 3: the head coach. So it's not just a culture higher
- 1:43:25Speaker 3: like you're not just a raw, raw guy. You have
- 1:43:27Speaker 3: that ability, all right.
- 1:43:29Speaker 2: The six thirty game is on CBS and Paramount Plus.
- 1:43:33Speaker 2: It's the thirteen and four Bills visiting the fifteen and
- 1:43:36Speaker 2: two Chiefs.
- 1:43:39Speaker 4: Chiefs by one and a half.
- 1:43:41Speaker 5: Ooh, Moses, Yeah, I'm going I'm going for Buffalo on
- 1:43:44Speaker 5: this one.
- 1:43:45Speaker 6: I think it's their time.
- 1:43:46Speaker 5: I mean, just at some point, since you can't see
- 1:43:50Speaker 5: you can't keep winning these games like this, like where
- 1:43:52Speaker 5: they're just doing just barely enough to get by. I
- 1:43:55Speaker 5: think it's Josh Allen's time. I think they're confident. I
- 1:43:58Speaker 5: think they got something to prove. And I'm gonna take
- 1:44:00Speaker 5: the Bills.
- 1:44:02Speaker 3: My heart wants to take the Bills, but the fixes
- 1:44:05Speaker 3: in for the Chiefs, So I'm going to take Kansas
- 1:44:08Speaker 3: City and the Swifties, and I just I don't know, man,
- 1:44:13Speaker 3: they just until they lose. I just feel like I
- 1:44:15Speaker 3: can't pick against the Chiefs, and they just find a
- 1:44:17Speaker 3: way to win these games. And I just wonder if
- 1:44:20Speaker 3: that's going to happen again. But I think Bubbo is
- 1:44:22Speaker 3: the better team. Like I think they're the better team
- 1:44:24Speaker 3: on paper. It's just something about Kansas City.
- 1:44:28Speaker 4: Yeah, I understand where Evan's coming from. I think Buffalo
- 1:44:31Speaker 4: has just flat out better and I think that they
- 1:44:33Speaker 4: will win this game. I do think it's their time.
- 1:44:36Speaker 4: As Mike said that said, you better not make it
- 1:44:43Speaker 4: let it be close at the end. If you do
- 1:44:45Speaker 4: your little thing that Joe Brady did last week and
- 1:44:47Speaker 4: allow the other team to get back in the game,
- 1:44:49Speaker 4: you're not going to luck out because Mahomes will find
- 1:44:52Speaker 4: a way to get that two point conversion. So don't
- 1:44:54Speaker 4: leave it up to a player or two at the end,
- 1:44:56Speaker 4: because Mahomes will make it. I have unbelievable respect for
- 1:44:58Speaker 4: Andy Reid and Mahomes. We'll catch that and Kelsey won't
- 1:45:01Speaker 4: drop the ball that Mark Andrews dropped. So do what
- 1:45:04Speaker 4: you did in Buffalo. Instead of kicking a field goal
- 1:45:07Speaker 4: to go up five, you go for fourth and two
- 1:45:09Speaker 4: when you're up to when you make it a nine
- 1:45:11Speaker 4: point game and ended. That's what they That's the mentality
- 1:45:14Speaker 4: that Buffalo needs to bring. Will Sean McDermott and Joe
- 1:45:17Speaker 4: Brady do it. I think they will, but if it's close,
- 1:45:20Speaker 4: I don't like it.
- 1:45:22Speaker 2: Folks, this is your lock of the week. Kansas City
- 1:45:27Speaker 2: wins the game outright out covers that point and a half.
- 1:45:32Speaker 2: I'm not saying easily. I have a lot of respect
- 1:45:35Speaker 2: for the Bills, but the window was closing. They cannot
- 1:45:39Speaker 2: upset the laws of nature by winning a super Bowl.
- 1:45:42Speaker 2: And the best way to not win a super Bowl
- 1:45:44Speaker 2: is not get to the super Bowl. So the chief
- 1:45:47Speaker 2: the Chiefs do me a solid. They beat the Bills
- 1:45:50Speaker 2: and then lose in the super Bowl. We'll deal with that.
- 1:45:53Speaker 4: I was gonna do one of those lame gifts and
- 1:45:56Speaker 4: send it to you after they won last week and
- 1:45:58Speaker 4: just put the window.
- 1:46:02Speaker 2: If I knew how to do that, I will. I'll
- 1:46:04Speaker 2: teach it, so I I But in all seriousness, the
- 1:46:07Speaker 2: Chiefs not how to win.
- 1:46:08Speaker 6: They know, no question about that.
- 1:46:09Speaker 2: Absolutely. I think they've been getting better every week over
- 1:46:12Speaker 2: the last month.
- 1:46:13Speaker 4: I agreed that they know how to win, and that
- 1:46:15Speaker 4: would worry me a little bit if I was a
- 1:46:17Speaker 4: Bills fan. I mean, if I was a fan, and
- 1:46:19Speaker 4: everything would borrow me.
- 1:46:21Speaker 5: I mean, it's like Brady, it's it's like you said.
- 1:46:22Speaker 5: I thought you laid it out so well.
- 1:46:24Speaker 6: It's like you got to score score.
- 1:46:25Speaker 2: You mentioned you're going to look at the weather, and
- 1:46:27Speaker 2: you didn't, sugar plumbs do that.
- 1:46:29Speaker 4: Well, it's not gonna affect my parents, Philly.
- 1:46:32Speaker 3: It looks like the weather is going to be fine.
- 1:46:34Speaker 3: And then uh looks like both games it should be
- 1:46:38Speaker 3: relatively fine.
- 1:46:39Speaker 2: All right, I have to run. There's still another fifteen minutes.
- 1:46:43Speaker 4: You guys, take your guy first.
- 1:46:44Speaker 2: I can't. I gotta go. I gotta go.
- 1:46:46Speaker 4: Punch them up, touch them up.
- 1:46:48Speaker 2: You do it and I'll be I'll see you next Tuesday.
- 1:46:51Speaker 4: What you got, Christian?
- 1:46:54Speaker 14: Happyth anniversary with the New England Patriots organizations. I keep
- 1:46:59Speaker 14: track of these things, spread you.
- 1:47:00Speaker 3: Know, and I want to call you Freddy.
- 1:47:02Speaker 4: You listeners to this. This is unbelievable. This is unbelievable.
- 1:47:09Speaker 4: This is why we can't have nice things, Christians, not
- 1:47:12Speaker 4: your phone. What are you saying today is.
- 1:47:13Speaker 14: What thirtieth anniversary? We's been with the Patriots for thirty years?
- 1:47:20Speaker 5: Yeah, why don't we talk about it? Because now Fred's
- 1:47:22Speaker 5: gone so we can we can. This is great, Christian,
- 1:47:24Speaker 5: You did nothing wrong. Christian, Thank you very much, for
- 1:47:27Speaker 5: calling in.
- 1:47:28Speaker 6: We tried, We tried.
- 1:47:30Speaker 5: Fred gave it one of the hold on, hold on,
- 1:47:33Speaker 5: he's coming back, he's coming back.
- 1:47:38Speaker 4: Well, it's been brought to our attention that this is
- 1:47:40Speaker 4: your thirtieth anniversary with the organization.
- 1:47:42Speaker 2: I think it's actually a twenty fifth, but thank you Christian.
- 1:47:45Speaker 2: Thirtieth Yeah, no, no, it happens on the twenty fifth,
- 1:47:50Speaker 2: But thank you Christian. I appreciate that you've been with
- 1:47:53Speaker 2: me from the start.
- 1:47:57Speaker 14: It's such a community and a place for us to connect,
- 1:48:00Speaker 14: and you put up with a complete nonsense. I mean
- 1:48:03Speaker 14: we put up with yours too.
- 1:48:05Speaker 4: Okay, he's non plusty, he has a meeting.
- 1:48:10Speaker 14: I love the show.
- 1:48:11Speaker 3: Thanks Christian, Thank you Christian.
- 1:48:14Speaker 4: All right, ah right, well.
- 1:48:16Speaker 5: Paul, should we tell that the audience what what was
- 1:48:18Speaker 5: going on right there?
- 1:48:19Speaker 3: That is the most Fred reaction too.
- 1:48:21Speaker 4: So I knew the reaction was going to be what
- 1:48:23Speaker 4: it was. Obviously we had Christian, you know, deliver that
- 1:48:27Speaker 4: news for us, because we knew Fred would be all
- 1:48:30Speaker 4: pissy if we did it ourselves and made a big
- 1:48:33Speaker 4: deal out of it. But just it's the most Fred
- 1:48:35Speaker 4: thing ever thirty years to just get up and walk out.
- 1:48:38Speaker 5: Yeah, He's like, no, it's a twenty fifth.
- 1:48:40Speaker 4: There is a meeting. I happened to know what his
- 1:48:42Speaker 4: meeting is. He is a meeting at two o'clock. Like,
- 1:48:46Speaker 4: it's one forty eight. We got to prepare.
- 1:48:49Speaker 6: Maybe you don't want.
- 1:48:51Speaker 2: To be late, please damn skippy.
- 1:48:55Speaker 4: Well, so thank you Christian for doing that. And I
- 1:48:58Speaker 4: picked Christian to deliver that news because I am relatively
- 1:49:03Speaker 4: certain that he has been part of this show since
- 1:49:06Speaker 4: its inception.
- 1:49:07Speaker 6: That's crazy, so he would know that it's thirty.
- 1:49:10Speaker 5: Thirty years for could we do a little like Cursed
- 1:49:12Speaker 5: story time now, you know, in his honor since he's
- 1:49:15Speaker 5: not here. But when I came in to do my
- 1:49:16Speaker 5: just if you got a if you got a story
- 1:49:18Speaker 5: about it, I got I got one or you know
- 1:49:19Speaker 5: when how you got When I.
- 1:49:20Speaker 4: Came in to do my interview and he had a
- 1:49:22Speaker 4: a like a meatball staying on his on his shirt,
- 1:49:25Speaker 4: and I was like, I'm gonna be able to work here.
- 1:49:27Speaker 4: I don't have to dress up. This is I can
- 1:49:28Speaker 4: do this.
- 1:49:29Speaker 5: Yeah, I'll tell my story real quick because I I mean,
- 1:49:32Speaker 5: I've told you before when I got this job, I
- 1:49:34Speaker 5: really needed a job.
- 1:49:35Speaker 6: I needed a job bad. I was freelancing.
- 1:49:37Speaker 5: I was just desperate for work, and you know, all
- 1:49:40Speaker 5: of a sudden, out of the blue, Fred calls me.
- 1:49:42Speaker 5: I like, Andy left, and I was like, I like,
- 1:49:44Speaker 5: who are you gonna hire? I've been blogging about this
- 1:49:46Speaker 5: team for ten years on my own emailed Fred and
- 1:49:48Speaker 5: you know, We'll conversed a couple of times, and I
- 1:49:51Speaker 5: was in like an auto part store and Fred called me.
- 1:49:52Speaker 5: He's like, hey, why don't you to come on the show.
- 1:49:54Speaker 5: So I came on the show with you guys, which
- 1:49:56Speaker 5: was crazy, and uh, you know, here I am sitting
- 1:49:58Speaker 5: with Paul Perillo and Eric and f you know, they
- 1:50:00Speaker 5: were they're the famous, you know, the great PF. I mean,
- 1:50:02Speaker 5: I knew you more as the PFW guys after you rebranded.
- 1:50:05Speaker 5: But so a couple of weeks didn't hear. And the
- 1:50:08Speaker 5: funny thing was, and finally I'm like, hey, you know,
- 1:50:10Speaker 5: I email Fred.
- 1:50:10Speaker 4: I'm like, what's going on?
- 1:50:11Speaker 2: You know?
- 1:50:12Speaker 5: He's like So finally then HR calls and they're like, well,
- 1:50:14Speaker 5: we want you to come in for an interview. And
- 1:50:15Speaker 5: I was like, whoa, I just did a two hour
- 1:50:18Speaker 5: radio show. Does that count as an interview?
- 1:50:20Speaker 6: So I went in with.
- 1:50:20Speaker 5: Fred and we were actually waiting for no Socks to
- 1:50:22Speaker 5: come up, and you know, a little nervous, like I said,
- 1:50:24Speaker 5: really needed the job bad, and and he's like, oh,
- 1:50:27Speaker 5: you know what, So would you do this weekend? I
- 1:50:28Speaker 5: was like, oh, I was just you know, down Cape
- 1:50:30Speaker 5: Cod at my mom's house. And he's like, well, wh
- 1:50:31Speaker 5: where are you from? I was like East Dennis.
- 1:50:33Speaker 6: He's like, I grew up in East Dennis.
- 1:50:35Speaker 5: And so right at that point, I was like, this
- 1:50:38Speaker 5: is this is where we started talking restaurants, we started
- 1:50:40Speaker 5: talking beaches.
- 1:50:41Speaker 6: Uh, and so that point I knew it as well.
- 1:50:43Speaker 5: So I'm for part of this part of the interview
- 1:50:45Speaker 5: that was what they were already.
- 1:50:46Speaker 6: They were already cutting they were already cutting you out
- 1:50:48Speaker 6: of But no.
- 1:50:50Speaker 4: I I was actually I was actually a way for
- 1:50:52Speaker 4: that second.
- 1:50:53Speaker 14: Well.
- 1:50:54Speaker 5: What other side note was that after I did my
- 1:50:56Speaker 5: radio appearance, Paul like we ended, we wrapped the PU
- 1:50:58Speaker 5: show and Paul looks at me and he's like, so,
- 1:51:00Speaker 5: what happened to your sophomore year? And I was like
- 1:51:03Speaker 5: what I'm thinking. I'm like, oh, my hockey stats, you know,
- 1:51:05Speaker 5: because my hockey stats it was like played a bunch
- 1:51:07Speaker 5: of my freshman year and I only played half the season.
- 1:51:10Speaker 5: My suffare because I had Mono and so I was like, oh,
- 1:51:12Speaker 5: I have Mono. So it was that was kind of
- 1:51:14Speaker 5: a funny, funniest side. But but I'll always be so,
- 1:51:17Speaker 5: you know, grateful to Fred for forgiving me this job
- 1:51:19Speaker 5: because like I really needed it, and I you know,
- 1:51:22Speaker 5: it was getting ready to go work at the grocery
- 1:51:23Speaker 5: store or something, trying to figure out how to make
- 1:51:25Speaker 5: ends meet and and provide for my family. So now
- 1:51:28Speaker 5: it's a it's pretty cool thirty years. That's amazing in
- 1:51:31Speaker 5: what a trailblazer he's been with the paper and the
- 1:51:33Speaker 5: radio and the internet shows and everything that he's done.
- 1:51:36Speaker 6: So I'm glad we got to say all this without.
- 1:51:37Speaker 4: Him here, yeah, because he would be mad. Right, you
- 1:51:40Speaker 4: got anything, you get a story.
- 1:51:42Speaker 3: I have a couples, but I want yelling at you. Yeah,
- 1:51:47Speaker 3: but one of them that goes like I had just
- 1:51:50Speaker 3: started here and I came to my desk and on
- 1:51:53Speaker 3: my desk was pads of football plays and like you
- 1:51:59Speaker 3: could like you know, like to pad plays, like you
- 1:52:01Speaker 3: could actually had the formations and you could draw. And
- 1:52:04Speaker 3: I'm just sitting there and I'm like, who who put
- 1:52:06Speaker 3: these on my desk and he comes out of his
- 1:52:09Speaker 3: office and he goes, oh, Evan, I put those on
- 1:52:11Speaker 3: your desk because I thought maybe you'd want to pad
- 1:52:13Speaker 3: some play. At this point, I like, you know, I
- 1:52:19Speaker 3: didn't know well enough to to like, you know, he's
- 1:52:22Speaker 3: my boss, So I was like, oh, yeah.
- 1:52:24Speaker 4: Totally yeah, right, Mesh.
- 1:52:28Speaker 3: As it turns out, he was Mesh, did you drop power?
- 1:52:31Speaker 3: Definitely probably busting my chops, And.
- 1:52:34Speaker 4: I was too nervous.
- 1:52:36Speaker 3: I was too nervous to at that point to just
- 1:52:39Speaker 3: bust back.
- 1:52:39Speaker 4: So I got these pads, Like, I don't know if
- 1:52:41Speaker 4: he wants me to actually come up with different plays?
- 1:52:44Speaker 3: Yeah, I was like, am I supposed to draw?
- 1:52:46Speaker 1: Like?
- 1:52:46Speaker 3: Do I have to present help?
- 1:52:48Speaker 4: Like?
- 1:52:48Speaker 5: He always clean out his desk and he's like, what
- 1:52:50Speaker 5: is this.
- 1:52:52Speaker 3: That you'd want those?
- 1:52:54Speaker 6: But you've been with him how long?
- 1:52:55Speaker 2: What?
- 1:52:55Speaker 6: Twenty five years now?
- 1:52:56Speaker 4: Twenty six seasons? I believe, wow? Yeah, And Fred's always
- 1:53:02Speaker 4: been great. What you hear on the on the radio
- 1:53:05Speaker 4: is I mean, that's not that far off of what
- 1:53:07Speaker 4: he is, you know. Off he gives us a lot
- 1:53:10Speaker 4: of freedom to do our jobs, which I really appreciate.
- 1:53:14Speaker 4: It's probably the biggest reason why I stayed here as
- 1:53:16Speaker 4: long as I have is because they make it very
- 1:53:19Speaker 4: easy to work, and I would say Fred and Matt
- 1:53:21Speaker 4: both do that very well. So I'm not as happy
- 1:53:27Speaker 4: about Fred as you guys because my entire time here
- 1:53:30Speaker 4: and I've been looking for something that maybe you know,
- 1:53:32Speaker 4: as much as I enjoy working here, it means something
- 1:53:35Speaker 4: a little bit more lucrative, shall we say? Right?
- 1:53:39Speaker 2: Shall we?
- 1:53:40Speaker 4: Shall we say? And somehow he finds that opportunity for
- 1:53:44Speaker 4: everybody else who's worked here, but not me, So I'm
- 1:53:49Speaker 4: not as high on Fred for everybody else.
- 1:53:53Speaker 5: I The other thing I like well Fred though, was
- 1:53:55Speaker 5: like he's not afraid to play the fool. I mean,
- 1:53:56Speaker 5: he's really obviously very sharp, very smart guy, but has
- 1:54:00Speaker 5: a way about, you know, being able to be the
- 1:54:02Speaker 5: butt of the joke and kind of.
- 1:54:03Speaker 6: A pure aloof and goofy.
- 1:54:06Speaker 5: But at the same time, you know, when it really
- 1:54:07Speaker 5: gets down to brass tacks and there's serious stuff going on,
- 1:54:10Speaker 5: you know, he knows what's going on. He knows how
- 1:54:12Speaker 5: to push things, push the envelope, I mean, as he's
- 1:54:14Speaker 5: done many times.
- 1:54:15Speaker 4: And I'll just say, like, behind the scenes, there's been
- 1:54:18Speaker 4: a lot of sort of memorable things that have gone
- 1:54:20Speaker 4: on here, you know, with the organization, whether it be
- 1:54:25Speaker 4: you know, They're not done Network at the super Bowl
- 1:54:27Speaker 4: in Minnesota, or Brady Knight, you know, just this past.
- 1:54:32Speaker 4: You know, the the level of involvement that Fred has
- 1:54:36Speaker 4: at the highest level, and I'm not saying this is
- 1:54:39Speaker 4: not like a joke like what Mike and Tony do
- 1:54:42Speaker 4: to me on Sunshine dot Com. At the highest levels
- 1:54:45Speaker 4: of the organization. The stuff that the Craft family not
- 1:54:48Speaker 4: only wants Fred's input but respects Fred's input on would
- 1:54:54Speaker 4: blow people away. The amount of things that he's had
- 1:54:57Speaker 4: his hands on, and not all of them have been
- 1:54:59Speaker 4: home runs. You know, sometimes we try some things. I
- 1:55:02Speaker 4: remember we had like a Digital Gold Club, you know,
- 1:55:04Speaker 4: DVDs and stuff like that with behind the scenes you
- 1:55:07Speaker 4: know special you know, kind of like a version of
- 1:55:10Speaker 4: the newsletter that we were trying to like special interviews
- 1:55:12Speaker 4: and stuff didn't work. You know, they're not all home runs,
- 1:55:15Speaker 4: but most of them have worked, you know, from the
- 1:55:17Speaker 4: paper to the website, the World's Original podcast, the podcasts
- 1:55:21Speaker 4: that we do. You know, Fred was instrumental in all
- 1:55:24Speaker 4: of it, and the Crafts really respect his opinions on
- 1:55:28Speaker 4: all of this stuff and that's why they've given him
- 1:55:30Speaker 4: the latitude that they do.
- 1:55:31Speaker 3: Yeah, I think he's like the best ideas man that
- 1:55:35Speaker 3: I've maybe ever been around, where like you just you
- 1:55:38Speaker 3: might have even like a half bake idea yourself, and
- 1:55:41Speaker 3: then like all of a sudden, he like brings it
- 1:55:43Speaker 3: out into this like whole, like big thing and they're like,
- 1:55:46Speaker 3: it's you know, pretty crazy. Like I think the like
- 1:55:49Speaker 3: Brady Knight's kind of a good example where that was
- 1:55:51Speaker 3: something that was just sort of kicked around and then
- 1:55:53Speaker 3: all of a sudden it becomes like this amazing you
- 1:55:56Speaker 3: know night for the organization, And I'll just say really
- 1:55:59Speaker 3: quick to you know, just allowing me to do Catch
- 1:56:03Speaker 3: twenty two with barth in like when I got here
- 1:56:06Speaker 3: and giving me that opportunity to bring the podcast with
- 1:56:09Speaker 3: me was was just a tremendous like I really appreciate that.
- 1:56:13Speaker 4: That's a great example of what I'm talking about. You know,
- 1:56:17Speaker 4: he you know John Rooks playbook that we did for
- 1:56:19Speaker 4: you know a long time. I know, you know, you know,
- 1:56:21Speaker 4: some of the things have changed over the years. He
- 1:56:23Speaker 4: had a fantasy football podcast that he did for a while,
- 1:56:27Speaker 4: you know with Banks, right with a couple of Don
- 1:56:29Speaker 4: Banks would do like a sort of an NFL at large,
- 1:56:32Speaker 4: you know, column online in podcasts. Like I said, some
- 1:56:37Speaker 4: of them lasted for decades. Some of them, you know
- 1:56:40Speaker 4: it didn't work. But the fact that he's always willing
- 1:56:43Speaker 4: to try some different things and the Catch twenty two
- 1:56:46Speaker 4: is a great example of it. So again, thirty years
- 1:56:50Speaker 4: is not an insignificant amount of time to be at
- 1:56:53Speaker 4: one one organization, and this is a business that choose
- 1:56:57Speaker 4: people up and spits them out. Yeah, so I consider
- 1:57:00Speaker 4: myself lucky to have work for him for as long
- 1:57:02Speaker 4: as I have. I say these things because he's not here,
- 1:57:06Speaker 4: and he won't He won't know how.
- 1:57:08Speaker 3: Long we just went on about him.
- 1:57:10Speaker 4: He wouldn't be happy about it, but just we love him.
- 1:57:14Speaker 4: He's been a great, great boss for a long time
- 1:57:17Speaker 4: for me.
- 1:57:17Speaker 5: And he's kissed Tom Brady. Let's jump over here. One
- 1:57:21Speaker 5: last call on the TPX hotline with Mark and Connecticut.
- 1:57:23Speaker 7: Heymark, Hey Evan, I was trying to get a hold
- 1:57:26Speaker 7: of you yesterday, but I know you.
- 1:57:27Speaker 14: Guys are really busy on the Catch twenty two podcasts.
- 1:57:30Speaker 14: I just had one real quick one for you, which
- 1:57:33Speaker 14: you would.
- 1:57:33Speaker 7: Post it on Twitter. Slash x Jacobe Myers, great guy,
- 1:57:39Speaker 7: great chain mover on third down. Any possible way that
- 1:57:43Speaker 7: we could try and try him away from the Las
- 1:57:46Speaker 7: Vegas Raiders with a trade or something of those lines.
- 1:57:51Speaker 3: Yeah, I posted about that, maybe a little bit tongue
- 1:57:54Speaker 3: in cheek, just because they brought back Josh. I was like, Wow,
- 1:57:57Speaker 3: we just get the whole band back together. But really,
- 1:58:00Speaker 3: and you think about it, Jacoby Meyers last year had
- 1:58:03Speaker 3: a thousand yards with Gardner Minshew and Aidan O'Connell throwing
- 1:58:06Speaker 3: him passes in Vegas. The Patriots haven't had a thousand
- 1:58:09Speaker 3: yard receiver since Julian Edelman in twenty nineteen. Wow, on
- 1:58:13Speaker 3: the roster like period, like not even just a thousand
- 1:58:17Speaker 3: yard receiver here. I think DeVante Parker was the only
- 1:58:19Speaker 3: other guy that's had in his entire career has had
- 1:58:22Speaker 3: in a thousand yard season.
- 1:58:23Speaker 6: I didn't realize that. Yeah, I just.
- 1:58:26Speaker 3: Yeah, So it's you know, Snagalo never gotten just to
- 1:58:31Speaker 3: kind of like put your nose up to Jacoby. I
- 1:58:33Speaker 3: think now I'm not saying he's the savior. He's obviously
- 1:58:36Speaker 3: only a piece and not the piece. But with the
- 1:58:39Speaker 3: Raiders also changing regimes and potentially changing offenses and all
- 1:58:44Speaker 3: that kind of stuff. I just thought, you know, maybe
- 1:58:46Speaker 3: he would want to come back here with Josh.
- 1:58:48Speaker 5: You know, it just stands out to me about him,
- 1:58:50Speaker 5: it's just reliability, and I think that's a big thing
- 1:58:52Speaker 5: that was missing around here. And I know we could
- 1:58:54Speaker 5: get into talking about and look, we want dynamic guys.
- 1:58:56Speaker 3: I want speed.
- 1:58:57Speaker 5: I want to really get a one two and guys
- 1:58:59Speaker 5: that move the needle. But I think there needs to
- 1:59:01Speaker 5: be an element of Jacoby Myers what he brought with
- 1:59:04Speaker 5: just tough catches on third down. You knew he was
- 1:59:07Speaker 5: gonna be where you needed him to be. That really
- 1:59:09Speaker 5: didn't exist last year.
- 1:59:10Speaker 3: Yeah. I mean he's a volume slot. Like we talked
- 1:59:12Speaker 3: about it earlier, like that, that's not really what we
- 1:59:14Speaker 3: see the Mario Douglas being. But he is a true
- 1:59:18Speaker 3: volume slot. Yeah, you need the DeVante Adams or something
- 1:59:22Speaker 3: like that on the outside to be the more dynamic guy.
- 1:59:25Speaker 3: But he's one of those guys that you could target
- 1:59:27Speaker 3: one hundred and twenty five times in a season and
- 1:59:29Speaker 3: he'd be able to play seventeen games.
- 1:59:32Speaker 4: I like Jacoby Myers, always have, always will. I'd like
- 1:59:35Speaker 4: to do better.
- 1:59:36Speaker 5: Yeah, that's all one of his dad still listens to
- 1:59:38Speaker 5: the podcast. I love mister Myers probably and probably still listens,
- 1:59:42Speaker 5: but you know.
- 1:59:42Speaker 4: I love all of the families that we've heard from
- 1:59:45Speaker 4: over the years. Again, that's a testament to Fred Marcus.
- 1:59:48Speaker 4: People care about there you go, people care about listening
- 1:59:51Speaker 4: to us.
- 1:59:51Speaker 5: All right, I think that's going to do it for us.
- 1:59:54Speaker 5: Stay tuned for the big NFC and AFC championship games
- 1:59:57Speaker 5: this week, and I'll be in an AHL Hockey game
- 1:59:59Speaker 5: for the first one.
- 2:00:01Speaker 6: No problem with that. But thank you for listening.
