Lucas: Exactly. We'll learn five zoo animals: de leeuw, de olifant, de aap, de giraf, and de pinguïn. Luna: Let me guess... de leeuw is lion? That sounds close. Lucas: Yes! De leeuw. The lion. Say it with me: de leeuw. Luna: De leeuw. Lucas: Perfect. Next, de olifant. That's the elephant. Luna: De olifant. That's pretty similar to English too. Lucas: Right. Now de aap. That's monkey. Luna: De aap. Short and sweet. Aap. Lucas: Exactly. Then de giraf. Giraffe. Luna: De giraf. That sounds like the English word but with a Dutch twist. Lucas: And finally, de pinguïn. Penguin. Luna: De pinguïn. Oh, that's fun! Pinguïn. Lucas: Now let's put these into a simple sentence. 'I see a lion.' In Dutch: Ik zie een leeuw. Luna: Ik zie een leeuw. Lucas: Good. So if you see an elephant, you say: Ik zie een olifant. Luna: Ik zie een olifant. Lucas: And a monkey? Ik zie een aap. Luna: Ik zie een aap. Lucas: Great. Now imagine we're at the zoo. What do you see? Luna: Let me think... Ik zie een leeuw! No, wait, I see a giraffe. Ik zie een giraf. Lucas: Ooh, almost. You said 'giraf' correctly, but the sentence is: Ik zie een giraf. Try again. Luna: Ik zie een giraf. Lucas: Excellent. And what about penguins? There's a whole group of them. Luna: Ik zie een pinguïn? But there are multiple... Lucas: For now, we're just using 'een' for one. So Ik zie een pinguïn works. But if you want to say 'I see penguins', that would be Ik zie pinguïns. We'll cover plurals another time. Luna: Okay, so for now I'll stick with Ik zie een pinguïn. You point and say: Ik zie een aap! Luna: Ik zie een aap! Lucas: And your friend says: Oh, wat leuk! Aapjes zijn grappig. That means 'How fun! Monkeys are funny.' Luna: Wat leuk! Aapjes zijn grappig. I like that. Lucas: Now you point to the elephants: Ik zie een olifant! Luna: Ik zie een olifant! Lucas: And your friend says: Ja, de olifant is groot. Yes, the elephant is big. Luna: De olifant is groot. That's easy. Lucas: Let's do one more. You see the penguins: Ik zie een pinguïn. Luna: Ik zie een pinguïn. Lucas: Your friend: Pinguïns zijn schattig! Penguins are cute. Luna: Schattig! That's a new word. Schattig. Lucas: Yes, schattig means cute. So you could say: De pinguïn is schattig. Luna: De pinguïn is schattig. Aww. Lucas: All right, let's wrap up. Today we learned five animals at the zoo. Can you list them for me? Luna: Sure! De leeuw, de olifant, de aap, de giraf, en de pinguïn. Lucas: Wow, you remembered them all! And the sentence?
