- 0:00Speaker 1: Kai and I brought her on stage.
- 0:01Speaker 2: Oh my god, that's really special.
- 0:05Speaker 1: Yeah, and she proposed to her husband, who said yes.
- 0:10Speaker 3: Hi, guys, welcome back to another episode of Clyde Confidential. Today,
- 0:21Speaker 3: I have my dear friend Justin Jesso, who is a
- 0:25Speaker 3: very talented musician, on my couch with his two employees.
- 0:30Speaker 3: I've got Julie Dawson, who is his head of social
- 0:33Speaker 3: and Dylan Owen, who is his chief of staff. So
- 0:35Speaker 3: we've got a full house today. Hi, guys, Oh my gosh,
- 0:40Speaker 3: it's my pleasure.
- 0:40Speaker 2: I'm so excited.
- 0:41Speaker 1: We're so excited. It's just so much fun.
- 0:44Speaker 2: It's going to be very fun.
- 0:46Speaker 3: And I think I get more excited, of course, when
- 0:48Speaker 3: it's one of my friends who comes over who I
- 0:50Speaker 3: also have a working relationship with.
- 0:51Speaker 2: So it's gonna be good.
- 0:53Speaker 1: It's going to be good.
- 0:54Speaker 2: Okay, So you've got two on your team.
- 0:57Speaker 1: I have, well, there's a couple more, but these are
- 0:59Speaker 1: the well, I don't know who's going to see this,
- 1:02Speaker 1: these are the ones I brought today. So these are
- 1:04Speaker 1: the best ones. Yes, yes, So I talked to them
- 1:08Speaker 1: most every day. So Dylan is actually my college buddy
- 1:13Speaker 1: and a fantastic artist himself, and he also has a
- 1:17Speaker 1: lot of experience working as a label manager. He was
- 1:20Speaker 1: the label manager for Fat Mike, Fat Mike, Fat Mike,
- 1:24Speaker 1: I said, Fat Joe, I forgot Mike somebody Punk Rock World, Ye,
- 1:30Speaker 1: so yeah. So Dylan is my chief of staff and
- 1:32Speaker 1: he has run a label before. He's run a bunch
- 1:35Speaker 1: of fan communities before, including his own, because he's a
- 1:38Speaker 1: fantastic artist. And I guess I just kind of missed
- 1:42Speaker 1: you man. And I was in college and.
- 1:45Speaker 4: We saw each other downtown at Jones on Third and
- 1:49Speaker 4: we had like we've been hanging out and stuff. But
- 1:52Speaker 4: then I was looking for a new artist to kind
- 1:56Speaker 4: of like get involved with because my Yeah, I was like,
- 1:59Speaker 4: look for something new with the new year and everything,
- 2:02Speaker 4: and yeah, it just worked out. It was like serendipit
- 2:05Speaker 4: as timing, you would just yeah, launched your label.
- 2:08Speaker 1: So yeah. So I was in the process of launching
- 2:11Speaker 1: my label and figuring out how I wanted to run it.
- 2:14Speaker 1: So it felt kind of like a sign because I
- 2:18Speaker 1: ran into him and I had just started interviewing people.
- 2:22Speaker 1: I started this process with a friend of mine named Rajesh,
- 2:27Speaker 1: and Rajesh is a C suite executive over at Ogilvy,
- 2:30Speaker 1: and he has been a bit of a mentor in
- 2:34Speaker 1: helping me get my head around just general marketing practices
- 2:38Speaker 1: and how to employ that across my label and you know,
- 2:42Speaker 1: try to think outside the box. And he was the
- 2:45Speaker 1: one who actually helped me find Julie. He originally helped
- 2:50Speaker 1: me source people to help staff the project that I
- 2:55Speaker 1: was starting with the label. So that's how I came
- 2:57Speaker 1: across Julie. And she is freaking awesome. She's literally the best,
- 3:04Speaker 1: uh And she's my head of social She basically is
- 3:08Speaker 1: in charge of anything that happens on social media and
- 3:13Speaker 1: and production as well. And she I feel like she's
- 3:17Speaker 1: a better version of my brain where she'll like very
- 3:21Speaker 1: because you'll think of things before even when. So we
- 3:25Speaker 1: have another team that we've hired that does ideation and
- 3:29Speaker 1: shooting and posting, and we'll be going through the edits
- 3:32Speaker 1: together and I'll send it to her first to go
- 3:35Speaker 1: over and she'll she'll hit me with notes and I'll
- 3:39Speaker 1: be like, that's exactly what I was thinking with better
- 3:41Speaker 1: take hell yeah, yeah.
- 3:42Speaker 3: I mean the page has been looking pretty good. Do
- 3:44Speaker 3: you also do his personal yeah? Yeah, everything.
- 3:47Speaker 1: So the way that we're set up across socials at
- 3:51Speaker 1: the moment is she's in charge of everything. We have
- 3:52Speaker 1: another team that has probably half of the things that
- 3:56Speaker 1: you see on social they've shot and edited and posted
- 3:59Speaker 1: through her guidance, and then the other half she's actually
- 4:03Speaker 1: across and Dylan's across some of this as well, where
- 4:06Speaker 1: you know, we'll get together probably once a week or
- 4:09Speaker 1: once every two weeks and do a whole shoot day
- 4:11Speaker 1: just us getting additional content. Hell yeah, yeah.
- 4:15Speaker 3: And do you also go on tour with justin manifesting
- 4:18Speaker 3: that okay yet gone there yet?
- 4:21Speaker 2: Okay?
- 4:22Speaker 5: Yeah?
- 4:22Speaker 3: Who's doing all your content on tour? Do you have
- 4:24Speaker 3: a tour pa or a tour son who helps.
- 4:27Speaker 1: You when I go out myself, which I haven't mounted
- 4:30Speaker 1: a tour yet since I've had these guys, then we
- 4:33Speaker 1: would discuss who comes and what that role looks like
- 4:36Speaker 1: when I'm out with Caigo, which is my day job
- 4:39Speaker 1: for those of you who don't know. On the pod, Yeah,
- 4:43Speaker 1: I started making as a songwriter. I always wanted to
- 4:46Speaker 1: be an artist. Wrote a song called Stargazing, got placed
- 4:48Speaker 1: on a DJ named Caigo, and that was about eight
- 4:51Speaker 1: years ago. The song blew up. I became an artist
- 4:54Speaker 1: and my day job for the past eight years, which
- 4:57Speaker 1: very rarely happens during the day, is being with Caigo
- 5:01Speaker 1: and singing those songs all over the world.
- 5:03Speaker 2: How did that happen?
- 5:04Speaker 3: You just said you got placed with the DJ named
- 5:06Speaker 3: Caigo in the most casual way.
- 5:10Speaker 1: My buddy Kigo I wrote the song. I was in
- 5:12Speaker 1: a session and I wrote the song called Stargazing with
- 5:16Speaker 1: a couple of friends of mine and we wrote it
- 5:20Speaker 1: on a Monday. On Tuesday, it was sent to Kigo
- 5:23Speaker 1: through my publisher. On Wednesday, we had a version back
- 5:27Speaker 1: and by Friday it was a confirmed single. That's crazy,
- 5:30Speaker 1: and then it came out two months later. It was
- 5:31Speaker 1: the fastest thing ever.
- 5:32Speaker 2: I was just going to say, is that normal? That
- 5:34Speaker 2: feels very quick.
- 5:36Speaker 1: Very quick.
- 5:37Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 5:37Speaker 1: The label tried to put different artists on it. It was
- 5:41Speaker 1: actually Caigo who stood up to the label and said, no, no,
- 5:44Speaker 1: I want Justin's voice on it. He wrote it, that's
- 5:46Speaker 1: authentic and that's the music I want to put out.
- 5:48Speaker 6: Wow.
- 5:48Speaker 1: So I owe him a lot. Our king, our king, Caigo,
- 5:51Speaker 1: our king. Yeah.
- 5:53Speaker 2: And when was that? That was two.
- 5:55Speaker 1: Thousand, That was two thousand and I was about to
- 5:58Speaker 1: say two thousand and eight. Like, that's way too early.
- 6:00Speaker 1: I was thinking too that I don't know everything great happened.
- 6:04Speaker 3: Yeah, I feel like music also back then it was
- 6:06Speaker 3: like the peak of DJs, Like that would have made
- 6:09Speaker 3: sense in my brain.
- 6:10Speaker 1: So that was when I graduated high school.
- 6:13Speaker 2: I was in high school. And I'm not going to
- 6:15Speaker 2: tell you what good for.
- 6:17Speaker 1: No, it's been about eight years. And that's that's my
- 6:20Speaker 1: day I call it my day job, which is touring
- 6:22Speaker 1: the world with Caigo. And I was just in Bangkok
- 6:25Speaker 1: and we just did a South America run and world
- 6:30Speaker 1: and I really do get to go all over the world,
- 6:31Speaker 1: which is a lot of fun.
- 6:33Speaker 6: So sick, so sick.
- 6:35Speaker 3: So when you're on tour with him, you don't just
- 6:37Speaker 3: perform stargazing, You've sing.
- 6:38Speaker 1: Other I sing other songs too.
- 6:39Speaker 3: Yeah, how did you transition from that one song to
- 6:43Speaker 3: a bunch of songs with him?
- 6:44Speaker 1: Someone got sick? Someone got sick, and I got a
- 6:47Speaker 1: frantic phone.
- 6:48Speaker 2: Call TOOS and his drink. What happened? No, I did it?
- 6:52Speaker 1: No, and and and he's fantastic. I mean, this version
- 6:54Speaker 1: of Firestone Conrad school is he's an insane entertainer. He
- 6:59Speaker 1: is so good.
- 7:00Speaker 5: Uh.
- 7:00Speaker 1: And there was one day where unfortunately he got sick
- 7:04Speaker 1: and I actually didn't tell them that I was sick
- 7:06Speaker 1: as well, but I just had a cold. And they
- 7:09Speaker 1: called me and they were like, because that's the closing number, right,
- 7:12Speaker 1: and we do it with an orchestra, and it's a
- 7:14Speaker 1: lot of fun. It's pretty big. And I got a
- 7:16Speaker 1: frantic call from from UH management being like, you know, hey,
- 7:20Speaker 1: he can't do it, like do you know the song?
- 7:23Speaker 1: And I was like, I didn't know the song. I
- 7:25Speaker 1: like I knew it, I knew it, but I didn't
- 7:27Speaker 1: know it like confidently enough to perform it that night.
- 7:31Speaker 1: And I just said yeah, sure, and so he said okay, great,
- 7:35Speaker 1: you're doing it. I'm like, okay, fine. So then I
- 7:40Speaker 1: got on stage that night and I did it and
- 7:42Speaker 1: and he crushed and yeah, and they were like that
- 7:44Speaker 1: was that was pretty good. Make it till you make it, baby,
- 7:47Speaker 1: take it, Fake it till you make it. And then
- 7:49Speaker 1: and then Conrad is a very successful artist in his
- 7:52Speaker 1: own right, and he ended up doing some other things,
- 7:54Speaker 1: and you know, then they asked me to come in
- 7:56Speaker 1: and sing that song, and so I said, And then
- 8:01Speaker 1: we also do a song called Fragile, which was originally
- 8:03Speaker 1: labyrinth that I also love because it's a really fun
- 8:06Speaker 1: show piece, and we generally do that when it's a
- 8:09Speaker 1: Caigo show as opposed to a festival. So that's the Yeah,
- 8:15Speaker 1: that's the nitty gritty of.
- 8:16Speaker 3: How you'll go on tour with Caigo and then you
- 8:18Speaker 3: go to all the Palm Street Group festivals with him
- 8:20Speaker 3: as well.
- 8:20Speaker 1: Yes, yeah, cool, yeah, yeah, I go whenever they call me,
- 8:24Speaker 1: I'm I'm there. I've probably done most of the shows
- 8:28Speaker 1: over the last eight years.
- 8:29Speaker 2: So cool, good for you. That's how it started, and.
- 8:32Speaker 1: That yeah, and that gave me my career as an artist.
- 8:34Speaker 1: And then I signed a Sony and released a bunch
- 8:39Speaker 1: of records that did really well on radio, particularly in Europe,
- 8:43Speaker 1: and then I toured and then the pandemic hit, and
- 8:49Speaker 1: then I toured again, and then my deal with Sony
- 8:53Speaker 1: ended and I went. I bounced around to a couple
- 8:56Speaker 1: of other little label entities and then decided to take
- 8:58Speaker 1: the reins myself. And at the top of this year,
- 9:01Speaker 1: I said, Okay, I'm going to start to figure out
- 9:04Speaker 1: all of the things that I loved about my experiences
- 9:08Speaker 1: with major labels, minor labels, indie labels, and swirl that
- 9:12Speaker 1: into how I would do it, and I felt like
- 9:14Speaker 1: it was time to take the reins myself. So I
- 9:16Speaker 1: did a distribution deal and said, Okay, how do we
- 9:20Speaker 1: create my own team and run this the way I
- 9:23Speaker 1: want to run it? Because inevitably, as I'm sure you know,
- 9:26Speaker 1: when you're working with other partners, you have to do
- 9:30Speaker 1: it in a way that works for both of you,
- 9:32Speaker 1: in a way that they sometimes they dictate, especially if
- 9:35Speaker 1: they're the ones that are holding the purse strings. And
- 9:38Speaker 1: I wanted to really get out from under that and
- 9:42Speaker 1: start to build it in the way that I thought
- 9:44Speaker 1: it would translate best for the rest of my career.
- 9:47Speaker 1: So that's why I ended up doing it the way
- 9:49Speaker 1: I did it, and that's how I found these guys.
- 9:51Speaker 3: What was your thought process like when you had the
- 9:54Speaker 3: moment of Okay, I'm going to make a switch.
- 9:55Speaker 2: I need to start from scratch ish with a new team.
- 9:59Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean it feels in a way like scratch,
- 10:03Speaker 1: you know. I think my thought process was I wanted
- 10:10Speaker 1: to find a way. I think my thought process was twofold.
- 10:13Speaker 1: The first thing is that the industry is shifting, right.
- 10:16Speaker 1: So I had been offered distribution deals before and quite
- 10:22Speaker 1: frankly distributions for deals for a lot more money that
- 10:24Speaker 1: I turned down because I didn't feel like going the
- 10:29Speaker 1: distro route made sense at the time, that it felt
- 10:33Speaker 1: too independent when I was looking at the landscape, even
- 10:35Speaker 1: though people were saying this was a way to go
- 10:37Speaker 1: when you look at when you looked at the landscape
- 10:40Speaker 1: of the music industry two or three years ago, there
- 10:42Speaker 1: were really only a handful of names that had broken
- 10:46Speaker 1: through that story, and everybody else was signed to a
- 10:49Speaker 1: major label. And today that's just not the case, and
- 10:53Speaker 1: we have major stars, we have minor stars, we have
- 10:55Speaker 1: people that are up and coming that are self distributed,
- 11:00Speaker 1: and it's allowed them, you know, someone like Ray to
- 11:04Speaker 1: take the reins into her own hands. I mean, she
- 11:07Speaker 1: and I have a slightly similar story, where for her,
- 11:10Speaker 1: she was signed to a major and she was doing
- 11:13Speaker 1: well in kind of the pop EEDM space, and that's
- 11:16Speaker 1: what she was known for, and she had all of
- 11:19Speaker 1: this music that she loved that she wanted to release,
- 11:21Speaker 1: but the label kind of went, we don't, that's not
- 11:25Speaker 1: what we see for you, and you're doing this and
- 11:27Speaker 1: this is working over here, so keep doing that. Interesting
- 11:30Speaker 1: and she that wasn't you know, where her heart was,
- 11:33Speaker 1: so she took a step back and started releasing the
- 11:37Speaker 1: music that we now know her for. I mean, I
- 11:39Speaker 1: don't even know if you associate Ray with the massive
- 11:42Speaker 1: dance hits that she's had, but that's where she started.
- 11:45Speaker 1: And you know, I'm hoping that I have a bit
- 11:48Speaker 1: of a similar trajectory where you know, I've had my
- 11:50Speaker 1: success in that lane and the label wanted me to
- 11:54Speaker 1: do one thing, and we did some of that, but ultimately,
- 11:59Speaker 1: you know, I have other music that I want to
- 12:01Speaker 1: put out there, and maybe it's not you know, the
- 12:04Speaker 1: most commercial down the radio, down the middle radio record.
- 12:08Speaker 1: And you know, traditionally they've always been scared of ballads.
- 12:11Speaker 1: Every label I've ever been signed to is like, ooh,
- 12:14Speaker 1: ballads are tough, justin and I fucking love ballads, you know.
- 12:18Speaker 2: So now you have a little bit more freedom.
- 12:20Speaker 1: Not freedom, to do what I want, and you look,
- 12:22Speaker 1: if it fails, it fails, that's fine. But especially in
- 12:25Speaker 1: today's environment, I think it's less about the old model
- 12:30Speaker 1: and the old way of doing things, which is, you know,
- 12:34Speaker 1: release one single and push it for six to eight
- 12:36Speaker 1: months and try to get radio play and do all
- 12:37Speaker 1: these things, and more about they're at bats. You build
- 12:41Speaker 1: from the ground up, you build a community, and you
- 12:45Speaker 1: know the music is you keep swinging it out there
- 12:49Speaker 1: every couple of weeks, and you never know when something's
- 12:52Speaker 1: gonna catch fire. So you know, that's why I have
- 12:56Speaker 1: Julie and Dylan and they're looking at the numbers and
- 13:00Speaker 1: looking at what's happening in the community and on socials
- 13:04Speaker 1: and going, Okay, what's moving the needle, And then that's
- 13:08Speaker 1: a better way for us to think about how to
- 13:09Speaker 1: move the needle forward for my career as opposed to
- 13:13Speaker 1: doing it the old way.
- 13:14Speaker 3: And that's putting a lot of trust in these two
- 13:17Speaker 3: because you're no longer attached to a label and you're
- 13:19Speaker 3: doing everything on your own, and that's new territory for you, right,
- 13:22Speaker 3: So you want to make sure that you have a
- 13:24Speaker 3: really bomb asked team behind.
- 13:26Speaker 1: You, bomb ass team.
- 13:27Speaker 2: Yes, yeah, no pressure, no pressure at all.
- 13:30Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 13:32Speaker 3: Okay, So you came through your old manager reminding me, okay.
- 13:40Speaker 2: Okay, to justin as a referral through Okay, we love
- 13:43Speaker 2: a referral.
- 13:44Speaker 3: Yeah, less work for me. Yeah, I have clients, Honestly,
- 13:47Speaker 3: less work for everyone. Whenever I give a client referral
- 13:49Speaker 3: it's music to their ears.
- 13:51Speaker 5: It's Oh, I've got very blessed where I just seem
- 13:54Speaker 5: to attract the right people in my life.
- 13:57Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 13:57Speaker 5: So I got connected with Justin just before the holidays
- 14:02Speaker 5: this last year. We had a meeting and then we
- 14:05Speaker 5: had a couple of phone calls and then.
- 14:07Speaker 1: I think I cried in our first meeting.
- 14:08Speaker 8: Actually he did a little bit.
- 14:10Speaker 1: You know, I know what it was about.
- 14:13Speaker 8: I remember what you're tearing up.
- 14:15Speaker 5: I appreciated how open and vulnerable he was, and he
- 14:18Speaker 5: was talking about I think it's I don't want to
- 14:20Speaker 5: say her name.
- 14:22Speaker 9: Fan who really was so moved by his music and
- 14:27Speaker 9: just the way that Justin is able to connect with
- 14:30Speaker 9: his fans, and you know, I thought that was really special.
- 14:33Speaker 7: I was like, you're in a safe space.
- 14:35Speaker 6: It's okay.
- 14:36Speaker 1: So there is a story. I think we I think
- 14:40Speaker 1: she asked me like why do I do this? And
- 14:42Speaker 1: like what about this is the most exciting And.
- 14:45Speaker 2: I was going to ask you that, So thank you
- 14:46Speaker 2: for that.
- 14:49Speaker 1: So there's this, there's there's these two stories that have
- 14:53Speaker 1: really resonated with me over the years. But I've started collecting.
- 14:56Speaker 1: I have a folder of it called Inspired by Music
- 14:59Speaker 1: and and It's basically a folder of all of these
- 15:03Speaker 1: dms and texts that I get from from people who
- 15:06Speaker 1: listen to my music who have been genuinely affected by it.
- 15:10Speaker 1: And you know, I have people that say it's helped
- 15:11Speaker 1: them get sober, and I have people that, you know,
- 15:14Speaker 1: really I've had life changing events through my music. And
- 15:19Speaker 1: I think the one I was telling you or I
- 15:22Speaker 1: teared up, which I'm gonna maybe not do this time,
- 15:26Speaker 1: was there's this woman and her name is Kendra, and
- 15:30Speaker 1: she is a mom, and she has a ten year
- 15:32Speaker 1: old and her ten year old is autistic, and that
- 15:36Speaker 1: child hadn't ever really been able to connect words and feelings,
- 15:41Speaker 1: so like she would say I love you to him,
- 15:43Speaker 1: and he wouldn't know how to say it back. Right,
- 15:45Speaker 1: But he fell in love with the song of mine
- 15:47Speaker 1: called four hundred trillion, which is about how there's a
- 15:50Speaker 1: one in four hundred trillion chance that we're alive today
- 15:53Speaker 1: and how beautiful that is, and so he loved it
- 15:58Speaker 1: because of the numbers, right, he could get his head
- 16:01Speaker 1: around the numbers, and he asked his mom what it meant,
- 16:03Speaker 1: and she said, there's a one in a four hundred
- 16:05Speaker 1: trillion chance that you're alive today and that's really beautiful.
- 16:08Speaker 1: So when you find people that you love, you should
- 16:11Speaker 1: cherish that and tell them that you love them. And
- 16:15Speaker 1: he looked up at his mom and for the first
- 16:16Speaker 1: time said I love you, mom. And so she wrote
- 16:22Speaker 1: me this letter about how this had happened. And it's
- 16:26Speaker 1: moments like that that make me love what I do.
- 16:31Speaker 1: And funnily enough that you know, that song for a
- 16:33Speaker 1: Trillion didn't even do much like it was it. You know,
- 16:37Speaker 1: it wasn't a grand success as a single, And.
- 16:41Speaker 6: That's a success right there.
- 16:43Speaker 1: That's the success. The success is the idea that it
- 16:47Speaker 1: reached the person that it was supposed to reach. Yeah,
- 16:51Speaker 1: and did I cry telling that story? It was a
- 16:54Speaker 1: different story? No?
- 16:55Speaker 6: Is that one?
- 16:56Speaker 1: Is that one?
- 16:56Speaker 5: Okay?
- 16:57Speaker 1: Yeah? So that's why I do what I do. And
- 17:00Speaker 1: that's what's the most exciting, is being able to really
- 17:03Speaker 1: impact people in their lives through music.
- 17:05Speaker 3: And I love that you guys went there on your
- 17:08Speaker 3: first interview that that obviously.
- 17:10Speaker 1: Meant that you had allow of coffee.
- 17:12Speaker 3: Comfortable to share that with her and that there was
- 17:14Speaker 3: an instant connection, because I think most bosses wouldn't go
- 17:18Speaker 3: in like that unless they were like Okay, we're probably
- 17:20Speaker 3: going to work to thether let me share this, or
- 17:22Speaker 3: she seems like a safe space and I'm going to
- 17:24Speaker 3: be vulnerable for a second.
- 17:26Speaker 1: Right, So to be completely honest, No, I think it's
- 17:30Speaker 1: just me being an idiot. I you were, you were
- 17:34Speaker 1: my first.
- 17:35Speaker 5: A lot of questions, good deep ones and then but
- 17:39Speaker 5: he's just open and available to just let it.
- 17:41Speaker 3: Out when you're interviewing. What are some questions that you
- 17:45Speaker 3: asked him? Or or I think this actually would be
- 17:47Speaker 3: helpful for some folks listening.
- 17:50Speaker 5: Yeah, well, I think having a very clear idea what
- 17:53Speaker 5: it is that you want to get across on your platforms,
- 17:56Speaker 5: like who do you see yourself as as an artist
- 18:00Speaker 5: is huge, and like.
- 18:01Speaker 7: Creating a branding strategy.
- 18:03Speaker 8: From that, what what what? How do you want people.
- 18:06Speaker 6: To perceive you?
- 18:07Speaker 5: And so just kind of kind of starting there and
- 18:11Speaker 5: like what is it that you really want to get
- 18:12Speaker 5: out of your socials because I feel like so many
- 18:15Speaker 5: people will try and chase trends and they're not really
- 18:18Speaker 5: in their authenticity. But in my opinion and from what
- 18:21Speaker 5: I've seen over the years working with clients, anyone who
- 18:24Speaker 5: is really in their genuine authenticity, they skyrocket.
- 18:28Speaker 7: Because you're attracting the right people to you.
- 18:30Speaker 6: So I just like some questions like that.
- 18:33Speaker 3: I mean, this guy is very authentic, so it must
- 18:35Speaker 3: be it makes your job easy, right.
- 18:38Speaker 5: Oh definitely, And I appreciate that he's so open and
- 18:40Speaker 5: willing to do like concepts like if you went to
- 18:43Speaker 5: his page today, he's like sliding into the bathroom like
- 18:46Speaker 5: risky business, Tom cruises in his underwear. So yeah, we
- 18:50Speaker 5: posted that it's actually performing really well, Oh great, okay,
- 18:55Speaker 5: check it out if you want to see Justin in
- 18:56Speaker 5: his underwear.
- 18:59Speaker 2: I love it you come up with all these bits
- 19:01Speaker 2: for him or is it like a.
- 19:02Speaker 8: Mutual all that on that one?
- 19:05Speaker 7: Well, but I did say you should do it, so
- 19:08Speaker 7: you did put the risky business.
- 19:10Speaker 1: So we have this other team that we've come and
- 19:14Speaker 1: he's like, no, Justin, don't show the underwear.
- 19:16Speaker 4: U No, no, no, Well.
- 19:21Speaker 1: One idea.
- 19:22Speaker 2: I've known Justin long enough too quiet in the corner.
- 19:25Speaker 4: He's like, well, I have a lot to say about
- 19:27Speaker 4: the like the artist stuff, but I've known Justin long
- 19:30Speaker 4: enough that like you can't you can't restrain this guy,
- 19:33Speaker 4: like he's just gonna he's gonna be himself and like
- 19:35Speaker 4: do and show who he is on camera?
- 19:37Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, no, So we had a team that came
- 19:40Speaker 1: up with the ideation of doing something in the bathroom
- 19:43Speaker 1: because they did pull. I have this other team that
- 19:46Speaker 1: pulls trends and then tries to funnel them through like
- 19:50Speaker 1: a brand like my brand lens. So we found this
- 19:53Speaker 1: this is working over here. Let's reinterpolate that for you.
- 19:59Speaker 1: And it was you who added like.
- 20:01Speaker 5: This looks like Tom Cruise and Risky business.
- 20:03Speaker 8: Are you open to being your button down shirt? Like, yeah,
- 20:06Speaker 8: let's do it.
- 20:07Speaker 2: They never thought you asked. I never asked.
- 20:09Speaker 1: They said do this, and and my employee, Julie said
- 20:11Speaker 1: take your pants off, and I said sure. So that's
- 20:14Speaker 1: how we got there. Yeah, we don't have an HR
- 20:17Speaker 1: person who is Elvis is HR?
- 20:22Speaker 2: Your dog is so chill I can't get over it.
- 20:24Speaker 1: Yeah, he's employee the monk.
- 20:26Speaker 2: How old is he?
- 20:27Speaker 1: He's fourteen?
- 20:27Speaker 2: That's nuts he is. He's like such a sophisticated sir.
- 20:31Speaker 1: I know I pulled fourteen.
- 20:33Speaker 2: Come over any time you want to come?
- 20:34Speaker 1: You want to be here? Do you want to come
- 20:36Speaker 1: to the greenmy house?
- 20:38Speaker 10: Uh?
- 20:38Speaker 1: Sometimes? Usually not, it's usually usually he stays with Julie
- 20:42Speaker 1: when I go on to her and Dylan's watched him once,
- 20:47Speaker 1: but Dylan couldn't watch him last time because he said
- 20:50Speaker 1: he had to watch his fiancee. Because I'm really because
- 20:55Speaker 1: I'm really sorry, I can't watch Elvis. I have to
- 20:56Speaker 1: watch Molina and I got it, spent some time with her. Yeah, no,
- 21:05Speaker 1: it's great. It was very funny outakes.
- 21:09Speaker 2: It's going in.
- 21:10Speaker 1: You can't edit it. It's going in well, Dylan, So
- 21:15Speaker 1: Dylan's so funny. We had I wish we had the footage,
- 21:18Speaker 1: but we shot something a couple of days ago where
- 21:21Speaker 1: it's a video where I'm throwing a ball behind me
- 21:26Speaker 1: to somebody and the idea is like the ball is
- 21:28Speaker 1: in slow mo, but I'm slip singing the song and
- 21:31Speaker 1: the ball is supposed to be caught by someone behind
- 21:34Speaker 1: me with it like a pan, And he was like, bro,
- 21:39Speaker 1: that's that's really lame. I'm not doing that well.
- 21:42Speaker 4: They wanted me to stand with a pan and catch it,
- 21:46Speaker 4: and like the idea is supposed to be like a
- 21:48Speaker 4: ball into a basketball. Who so it's like now we're
- 21:50Speaker 4: like one step away from that. We're throwing a ball
- 21:53Speaker 4: into a pan, you know. And then I'm like standing
- 21:55Speaker 4: in the street, like it was just like too many.
- 21:57Speaker 4: So somebody on set used the expression like a on
- 22:00Speaker 4: a hat, like it's like a too many jokes stuffed
- 22:02Speaker 4: into one joke, and I was like, yeah, that's that's
- 22:05Speaker 4: what I.
- 22:05Speaker 3: Think about, to have some different opinions, right, Yeah, how
- 22:09Speaker 3: often do you guys disagree or feel comfortable chiming in
- 22:14Speaker 3: on things when you feel like.
- 22:16Speaker 2: It's not.
- 22:18Speaker 5: Well.
- 22:18Speaker 1: We ultimately just did the idea and told him he
- 22:20Speaker 1: was wrong and it turned out.
- 22:21Speaker 4: Right, and I just didn't have to do it somebody
- 22:23Speaker 4: else somebody else.
- 22:25Speaker 8: Usually I'll give people my two cents, yeah, not freedom.
- 22:27Speaker 3: So you guys are both comfortable to give feedback on
- 22:29Speaker 3: thousand percent.
- 22:30Speaker 4: I feel like the whole point of me, like being
- 22:33Speaker 4: involved in Justin's music is to like offer a counter
- 22:36Speaker 4: opinion on things. You know. It's like he's already a
- 22:38Speaker 4: confident performer, Like he doesn't need people to just say
- 22:41Speaker 4: like good job or whatever. It's like he needs to
- 22:43Speaker 4: look at it.
- 22:43Speaker 2: I think that's very important.
- 22:44Speaker 5: Yeah, and we also don't need to be recycling trends
- 22:47Speaker 5: that have happened like a bunch of times through other artists,
- 22:50Speaker 5: which I mean, if it's working for an adjacent artist.
- 22:52Speaker 5: That's not necessarily an incorrect strategy. If it's working, it's
- 22:56Speaker 5: good to test it. But we also don't want to
- 22:58Speaker 5: be like rinse and repeat and have them be doing
- 23:01Speaker 5: the same content everybody else is right.
- 23:05Speaker 8: Out and like break through.
- 23:06Speaker 5: All that noise and what you can take a trend
- 23:09Speaker 5: and maybe adapt it a little bit or coming up
- 23:12Speaker 5: with different content.
- 23:14Speaker 7: So and I.
- 23:15Speaker 1: Appreciate and welcome the differences of opinion. I mean, that's
- 23:17Speaker 1: that's one of the reasons that I want them here,
- 23:20Speaker 1: is because if I had all the answers, then I
- 23:22Speaker 1: would have all the answers, but I don't.
- 23:23Speaker 3: Right, And I think having your internal team be the
- 23:27Speaker 3: ones to give you those opinions are that's important because
- 23:30Speaker 3: I think everyone else you work with is probably just
- 23:32Speaker 3: going to agree with you and tell you what you
- 23:35Speaker 3: want to hear. But I think to have people who
- 23:38Speaker 3: are opinionated who you really trust and you obviously have
- 23:42Speaker 3: such a great dynamic. Like I turn to my team
- 23:44Speaker 3: all the time and ask them for feedback, And I
- 23:46Speaker 3: think that bosses who ask for feedback are the best bosses,
- 23:50Speaker 3: and it just helps you be better at your own
- 23:52Speaker 3: job too.
- 23:53Speaker 1: Collaboration is such a big part of what it is
- 23:55Speaker 1: to be a songwriter, and so it feels similar, you know,
- 23:58Speaker 1: Like when I'm working on a song with a bunch
- 24:00Speaker 1: of different writers in a room, we're trying to get
- 24:02Speaker 1: the best for the song, and that's kind of how
- 24:05Speaker 1: I feel with these guys. It's the same thing. It's
- 24:07Speaker 1: it's a it's a collaboration to get the best ideas across,
- 24:11Speaker 1: to get the best strategies across, to figure out how
- 24:14Speaker 1: to translate my brand on socials, to figure out how
- 24:17Speaker 1: to streamline our processes. And one of the reasons that
- 24:21Speaker 1: I love them is because they both have great ideas.
- 24:23Speaker 1: I've also been given permission to tell you my nickname
- 24:26Speaker 1: for Dylan, which has been the same nickname since college.
- 24:29Speaker 1: It's not that crazy. It's just dil deal. But no one,
- 24:32Speaker 1: no one else is allowed to call him that.
- 24:34Speaker 4: I guess my high school girlfriend and her friends would
- 24:39Speaker 4: like call me dial.
- 24:40Speaker 1: But your high school, your high school friends owen got it.
- 24:46Speaker 1: It could be.
- 24:48Speaker 4: I don't like that.
- 24:49Speaker 1: I don't like that, but not on it's abused. No,
- 24:54Speaker 1: I like Bildal. That's cool.
- 24:58Speaker 4: You're the only one who's got from.
- 24:59Speaker 2: You guys to college together. Yeah, we went to college
- 25:01Speaker 2: and then you Rea.
- 25:02Speaker 3: After college, you guys didn't see each other for a
- 25:04Speaker 3: couple of years and then reconnected at Jones on Third.
- 25:07Speaker 4: Well, we were we like stayed friends for a while.
- 25:10Speaker 4: We would FaceTime and catch up. I would stay at
- 25:12Speaker 4: his place when I came to La Like, yeah, definitely friends.
- 25:15Speaker 4: And I saw you on tour too with Caigo, like
- 25:19Speaker 4: when you played Barclays, and then I also saw you
- 25:21Speaker 4: at Mercury, So we like stayed in touch both as
- 25:24Speaker 4: like friends and artists. And then yeah, this year, we're
- 25:27Speaker 4: kind of like building this indie label thing and I
- 25:30Speaker 4: was thinking about it with like my philosophy since I've
- 25:33Speaker 4: been like fourteen years old has been like it takes
- 25:36Speaker 4: a village to get music out into the world, and
- 25:41Speaker 4: the end result, like what you want to happen is
- 25:44Speaker 4: like the story that Justin described with Kendra, Like your
- 25:47Speaker 4: music actually affecting somebody, is that being the mom Yeah,
- 25:52Speaker 4: that's that's the goal, right, And like maybe a major
- 25:54Speaker 4: label artist with a huge operation behind them can have
- 25:59Speaker 4: that more scale or more of a volume of that,
- 26:01Speaker 4: but like I think it's so rewarding to have that
- 26:04Speaker 4: at all. So I've always been very diy I was
- 26:07Speaker 4: releasing music like back on MySpace and then during the
- 26:10Speaker 4: SoundCloud era, like whatever. I've always been kind of direct
- 26:13Speaker 4: to fan, you know, a believer in that, in that model,
- 26:16Speaker 4: like the chance the rapper model, let's call it. And yeah,
- 26:20Speaker 4: and then it's it's just dope to me that Justin
- 26:22Speaker 4: is like going this route now, and for me it's
- 26:24Speaker 4: like my bread and butter, like this's the only way
- 26:26Speaker 4: I really know how to do things, So I'm definitely
- 26:29Speaker 4: the guy to help.
- 26:31Speaker 1: It made a lot of sense when I was putting
- 26:34Speaker 1: this together and kind of shifting my mindset from okay,
- 26:37Speaker 1: the old way of doing things, the label system way
- 26:39Speaker 1: of doing things, the you know, how do we reach
- 26:41Speaker 1: as many people as broadly as possible, to how do
- 26:44Speaker 1: we get really specific about you know, who I am,
- 26:48Speaker 1: and how we move the needle forward person to person.
- 26:52Speaker 1: And that's something that he's specialized in for years.
- 26:54Speaker 3: I think that makes sense in an early career of
- 26:57Speaker 3: an artist, whether it's a musician or an actor, being
- 27:01Speaker 3: associated with a big agency or a big label at
- 27:05Speaker 3: the beginning, it's kind of necessary as you're getting yourself
- 27:08Speaker 3: out in the world and putting music out to have
- 27:12Speaker 3: that blanket, I think is very helpful and just in
- 27:15Speaker 3: terms of introducing you to people, and I think like
- 27:19Speaker 3: that's necessary actually, and then when you're a little bit
- 27:22Speaker 3: more established, it feels safer to go out and do
- 27:24Speaker 3: something like this.
- 27:26Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 27:26Speaker 1: I mean, it's also very interesting because you know, I
- 27:28Speaker 1: made an announcement the other day that I'm an independent artist, right,
- 27:31Speaker 1: and it was a weird thing for me because it's
- 27:34Speaker 1: like it's I think because I'm really really fortunate. I
- 27:41Speaker 1: get to stand on some of the biggest stages in
- 27:43Speaker 1: the world and sing songs that I've written, and I've
- 27:47Speaker 1: gotten to do that for the past eight years. And
- 27:49Speaker 1: I've played Coachella, and I've played Madison Square Garden, and
- 27:53Speaker 1: I've played Barclays and I've played the Hollywood Bowl and
- 27:57Speaker 1: I'm on all these big stages. So I think people
- 28:00Speaker 1: look at me and go, oh my god, like he's
- 28:04Speaker 1: so made it, he's so major, and like that's amazing.
- 28:08Speaker 1: But the truth is, at the same time, I'm really
- 28:12Speaker 1: fighting this indie game of getting my music out there,
- 28:15Speaker 1: getting my music heard, and you know, it's it's this
- 28:20Speaker 1: weird dichotomy of like figuring out how to translate, you know, yes,
- 28:24Speaker 1: it's amazing. I'm so grateful for all these things that
- 28:27Speaker 1: I get to do. But like, don't don't like pass
- 28:31Speaker 1: me over and go, oh, well, he doesn't need the
- 28:33Speaker 1: support or he doesn't you know, like take a second
- 28:37Speaker 1: look at the music, because you know I'm not I'm
- 28:40Speaker 1: not as much as I am that that's not all
- 28:43Speaker 1: that I am And there's more to offer than just
- 28:46Speaker 1: that shiny oh he plays the Madison Square Gardens. And
- 28:50Speaker 1: I want people to stop and take a look at
- 28:52Speaker 1: the music that I'm putting out and the new things
- 28:54Speaker 1: that I'm trying to say instead of just hear right,
- 28:57Speaker 1: which which they hear all the time and go okay,
- 28:59Speaker 1: well this all resonates with me. And I think sometimes
- 29:02Speaker 1: when you're looking at something that you think is you know,
- 29:08Speaker 1: has already gone, it's harder to feel like you're a
- 29:10Speaker 1: part of that journey, right. And for me, I'm like, no, no, no,
- 29:13Speaker 1: I need all of these people to be part of
- 29:16Speaker 1: that journey, and I want to connect with them as
- 29:18Speaker 1: deeply as possible, and that's authentically what we're trying to
- 29:21Speaker 1: Candres more Kendres, Yeah and deeper.
- 29:25Speaker 3: So important they do that and so special because the
- 29:28Speaker 3: reason why any artist makes it is because of fans.
- 29:30Speaker 1: Actually yeah, oh yeah. So I started this series it's
- 29:34Speaker 1: called Behind the Curtain, where we at the first of
- 29:38Speaker 1: every month or not, but the first Friday of every month,
- 29:41Speaker 1: I'm doing a zoom and I'm basically allowing I think
- 29:46Speaker 1: we're going to do like up to one hundred people,
- 29:50Speaker 1: but we might expand it. Last time, we had about
- 29:52Speaker 1: one hundred RSVPs people that have been following my journey
- 29:55Speaker 1: for years to come into this private zoom and for
- 30:00Speaker 1: me to really explain to them what it is to
- 30:03Speaker 1: be an independent artist. So I've introduced them to Julie,
- 30:06Speaker 1: I've introduced them to Dylan. I tell them what they're
- 30:08Speaker 1: working on. I tell them what we're working on. I
- 30:11Speaker 1: tell them I play the music before it's out, obviously
- 30:14Speaker 1: and amazing, you know, walk them through the plan of like, Okay,
- 30:16Speaker 1: we're releasing this here, and then we're doing this party,
- 30:19Speaker 1: and then we're releasing that here, and then this is
- 30:21Speaker 1: unannounced what we're going to do these tour dates here.
- 30:23Speaker 1: And I don't think there's another artist's that's doing that.
- 30:27Speaker 3: I've never heard of an artist doing that, and I
- 30:29Speaker 3: respect you so much for doing it.
- 30:31Speaker 2: And think it's amazing.
- 30:32Speaker 1: It's really cool, and it's been what's been very fun
- 30:36Speaker 1: about it is there are people that then say, you know, oh,
- 30:39Speaker 1: I actually bought a ticket. I'm coming to see you
- 30:41Speaker 1: in Kansas next week. I'm like, oh my god, that's
- 30:44Speaker 1: so cool. And then those are the people that I
- 30:47Speaker 1: know are kind of writing with me.
- 30:48Speaker 2: Those are the people that matter.
- 30:50Speaker 1: And those are the people that matter. So I want
- 30:51Speaker 1: to make sure that I'm hearing from them as to
- 30:54Speaker 1: what they want from me and then incorporating that into
- 30:57Speaker 1: my go forward plans as opposed to just dictating and
- 31:01Speaker 1: doing it really the old model, which is like okay,
- 31:03Speaker 1: we're doing this, this is this is like no, what
- 31:04Speaker 1: do what can I do for you? What do you want?
- 31:06Speaker 1: How can I and just like direct to the people.
- 31:10Speaker 4: Like yeah, no, no nonsense, no kind of like workaround
- 31:13Speaker 4: like no middlemen, you know, just like justin on zoom,
- 31:16Speaker 4: Like it doesn't get more direct than that.
- 31:18Speaker 7: There's an artist than reciprocity happening here.
- 31:21Speaker 2: So it's that's fantastic, join us, I will.
- 31:26Speaker 1: It's very early.
- 31:27Speaker 2: I'm thinking it's like it's like a live sub stack.
- 31:30Speaker 3: You know, some people send down a substack and give
- 31:32Speaker 3: updates and you subscribe to.
- 31:33Speaker 2: Emails, but you're just reading it.
- 31:35Speaker 3: That is, and it's it's better than going live on Instagram.
- 31:38Speaker 3: It's it's really it's like a direct.
- 31:41Speaker 2: Yeah, it's a direct.
- 31:43Speaker 5: Justine's personally inviting them, like especially looking at who is
- 31:47Speaker 5: engaging the most on in his comments. So if you're
- 31:50Speaker 5: watching this, start commenting and you'll get an invite from
- 31:54Speaker 5: Justin if you want to join.
- 31:55Speaker 1: Yeah, behind the come on, oh yeah, oh yeah. Kendrick
- 31:59Speaker 1: came on early. Kendra was the literal the first one
- 32:03Speaker 1: to do.
- 32:04Speaker 2: A segment with Kendra. Yeah, you should do like a
- 32:07Speaker 2: real with her and just talk about that. I mean,
- 32:09Speaker 2: that story is so beautiful.
- 32:11Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, it's there's a second one too that I
- 32:15Speaker 1: that I sent me to say I love, but it's
- 32:18Speaker 1: a crazy story. There was a a I do love
- 32:21Speaker 1: the entirety of the story, but the beginning of it's
- 32:23Speaker 1: very difficult. She was listening to stargazing, so she was
- 32:26Speaker 1: on a run and she was attacked and she couldn't
- 32:31Speaker 1: listen to anything, let alone the song that you know
- 32:35Speaker 1: was associated with the attack. And she did nine months
- 32:41Speaker 1: of rehab and therapy and then the first outing that
- 32:46Speaker 1: she went to which she came to my concert and
- 32:49Speaker 1: she actually bought a VIP ticket and I didn't know
- 32:52Speaker 1: this at the time, but you know, I puged people
- 32:54Speaker 1: and I went in to give her a hug, and
- 32:57Speaker 1: she DMed me afterwards and told me this story and
- 33:00Speaker 1: said that I was the first man that she had
- 33:02Speaker 1: let in her physical space bubble since the incident, and
- 33:07Speaker 1: she couldn't listen to stargazing, but she wanted to go
- 33:10Speaker 1: and felt like this was the final moment of her healing,
- 33:14Speaker 1: was hearing that song live, and then now she's able
- 33:17Speaker 1: to re listen to it and grow from it and
- 33:21Speaker 1: have that be part of her story. She then, a
- 33:26Speaker 1: couple of years later, we reconnected at a concert and
- 33:31Speaker 1: she had a boyfriend and he wanted to propose to her,
- 33:37Speaker 1: and she said she had told the boyfriend that because
- 33:41Speaker 1: of the incident, she would never be comfortable being proposed to,
- 33:46Speaker 1: but she told me that because she felt like she
- 33:49Speaker 1: had healed enough, she wanted to propose to him at
- 33:53Speaker 1: my concert, and so I said to her, come to
- 33:57Speaker 1: it on stage. So okay, it was a Kigo show, Kaigo,
- 34:01Speaker 1: and I brought her on stage. Oh my god, I
- 34:05Speaker 1: have the video. I can show you the video.
- 34:07Speaker 2: It's really special.
- 34:08Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah, And she proposed to her husband, who said yes,
- 34:15Speaker 1: which is it's just the craziest to beyond this, the
- 34:19Speaker 1: stories of the fans and the people who are affected
- 34:22Speaker 1: by the music is so powerful. And to be alone
- 34:25Speaker 1: on that ride is.
- 34:27Speaker 2: You have the coolest job in that sense.
- 34:28Speaker 3: I mean also your authentic self engaging with your fans.
- 34:33Speaker 3: Not a lot of people do that, and I think
- 34:36Speaker 3: when you connect on that sort of deep level, you're
- 34:39Speaker 3: never going to forget that, Like they also change your life, right.
- 34:42Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, it's really cute.
- 34:46Speaker 2: Okay, I'm going to go back to Dylan for a second.
- 34:48Speaker 2: What are you tell the audience.
- 34:51Speaker 3: If you don't mind, what are your corresponsibilities in Justin's
- 34:55Speaker 3: strategy these days?
- 34:57Speaker 4: Well, it's pretty it can kind of change day to day,
- 35:01Speaker 4: I would say, But if I had to narrow it down,
- 35:04Speaker 4: I would say anything like digital and label operations. That's
- 35:08Speaker 4: like just behind the behind the scenes that maybe people
- 35:13Speaker 4: don't see. Like there's so much that an independent self
- 35:17Speaker 4: releasing artist needs to do, like so much, and there's
- 35:21Speaker 4: so much admin stuff, So I kind of just lend
- 35:25Speaker 4: a hand wherever I can with that and then I'm
- 35:27Speaker 4: also here as like a you know, a thought partner
- 35:29Speaker 4: in anything. And then design and yeah, and design, like
- 35:34Speaker 4: even just knowing how to use like the Adobe Suite
- 35:37Speaker 4: and all that stuff, and knowing how to edit videos
- 35:39Speaker 4: like all that is really handy. And there's so much
- 35:42Speaker 4: of that like boring admin type stuff that like I'm
- 35:45Speaker 4: just used to doing it at this point because I've
- 35:48Speaker 4: been doing it for myself for so many years and
- 35:50Speaker 4: now it has turned into like doing it for other artists.
- 35:52Speaker 4: And yeah, some of it is just like a pain,
- 35:54Speaker 4: Like if you haven't done it before, how do I
- 35:57Speaker 4: crop this photo to be like a perfect square when
- 36:00Speaker 4: it's off by like ten pixels or something, you know,
- 36:02Speaker 4: and make it like three hundred, you know, three hundred
- 36:06Speaker 4: pixels by three or three thousand by three thousands. The distributor, Yeah,
- 36:11Speaker 4: I can upload it. So this is just like in
- 36:12Speaker 4: the getting in the weeds, I guess. So that's kind
- 36:15Speaker 4: of I would say.
- 36:17Speaker 1: Primary role is design. Yeah, designed the last cover art.
- 36:21Speaker 1: He designed the posters for the event I'm throwing tomorrow.
- 36:23Speaker 1: Email marketing, Yeah, all that stuff.
- 36:26Speaker 4: Email marketing, giving ideas for how to connect with fans,
- 36:30Speaker 4: being like team support for like we have an event
- 36:34Speaker 4: this weekend or release party for justin single Ready to
- 36:36Speaker 4: Blow that's coming out next week by the way, and yeah,
- 36:40Speaker 4: like just helping, you know, helping him with that, so
- 36:43Speaker 4: kind of everything and anything. And that's I want to
- 36:46Speaker 4: say this that if you're listening to this and you
- 36:48Speaker 4: don't work in music, you might not know that like
- 36:50Speaker 4: running your own music operation, it's like running a startup
- 36:53Speaker 4: of any kind, Like it can be as expansive or
- 36:56Speaker 4: you know, as amorphous as as you want. So it's like,
- 37:00Speaker 4: if we had a hundred people who could work for us,
- 37:02Speaker 4: we would find.
- 37:03Speaker 1: Ways to keep them busy.
- 37:05Speaker 4: So it's like there's no shortage of stuff to do,
- 37:09Speaker 4: and yeah, I'm excited to just like see.
- 37:11Speaker 1: It grow and see where we can take it.
- 37:13Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, hell yeah.
- 37:14Speaker 1: Originally was when trying to figure out what exactly Dylan's
- 37:17Speaker 1: role was, I was like, Okay, is it you know,
- 37:21Speaker 1: head of the label? Is it? Is it? You know?
- 37:23Speaker 1: But that wasn't even expansive enough. You know, there's so
- 37:26Speaker 1: many special projects that Dylan ends up doing. So that
- 37:29Speaker 1: was how we kind of settled on chief of stuff.
- 37:31Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, and like label, what I've done in the past,
- 37:34Speaker 4: mostly for other artists, has been like label manager technically
- 37:38Speaker 4: like on paper, but that doesn't really describe it well
- 37:40Speaker 4: because these have been small, independent, mostly like punk adjacent labels,
- 37:45Speaker 4: so it's like pretty direct to the people, like we're
- 37:47Speaker 4: talking about like a label like running off band camp
- 37:49Speaker 4: and stuff like that, or yeah, all this stuff with
- 37:52Speaker 4: No Effects and fat Mic and this band the Code
- 37:55Speaker 4: Defendants that I did, like we did not do anything
- 37:57Speaker 4: by the book like we had. We did some crazy
- 38:00Speaker 4: kind of like guerrilla marketing stuff. So label manager doesn't
- 38:04Speaker 4: really yeah put it in the right way. So it's
- 38:06Speaker 4: a little more like I would say, just kind of
- 38:09Speaker 4: independent artist like support, you know, very cool jack.
- 38:13Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 38:13Speaker 2: Yeah, that's a horrible nickname, so.
- 38:21Speaker 1: Horrible.
- 38:24Speaker 3: Okay, But you guys were friends, so like I mean
- 38:30Speaker 3: from my personal experience, I know that I can't.
- 38:31Speaker 2: Do that again.
- 38:32Speaker 1: It's your friend. Could we work together? We're friends, can
- 38:36Speaker 1: we work together? I feel like we could work to yeh.
- 38:40Speaker 2: But I think it doesn't work for everyone. So why
- 38:43Speaker 2: does it work for you guys?
- 38:45Speaker 1: Okay?
- 38:45Speaker 4: I think I know why? Okay, why and and the
- 38:48Speaker 4: reason is like we're we're both such artists, like I'm
- 38:51Speaker 4: a rapper, that's that's my.
- 38:56Speaker 1: For most people. He released a single today, you're a rapper,
- 38:59Speaker 1: I'm a rapper.
- 38:59Speaker 2: Yeah, well that just threw me off.
- 39:01Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah, so we threw my mom off too, if
- 39:05Speaker 1: she's the best, like he loves Dylan too.
- 39:07Speaker 4: If anyone like from my side listens into this, like
- 39:09Speaker 4: they know me as as a rapper, right, But I've
- 39:12Speaker 4: been very direct to fans, So it's like all of
- 39:14Speaker 4: it kind of bleeds together, and that's how I've learned
- 39:16Speaker 4: to like do anything right. But the reason why I
- 39:18Speaker 4: think we could work together as friends is because as friends,
- 39:22Speaker 4: like it's just who we are as humans, Like we're artists,
- 39:24Speaker 4: you know, and so we know each other and respect
- 39:27Speaker 4: each other's work ethic and and talent and ambition in
- 39:30Speaker 4: that way. And that's how we were in college too,
- 39:33Speaker 4: Like it's kind of we've always been championing each other.
- 39:35Speaker 4: The same conversations we have in a in a quote
- 39:37Speaker 4: unquote work sense, Like that's exactly the same conversation we
- 39:40Speaker 4: have anyway. So it really is like it's kind of
- 39:43Speaker 4: so we're both so similar I think in that way
- 39:47Speaker 4: that it's just yeah, it's just what it is.
- 39:49Speaker 6: I don't know if you follow astrology.
- 39:51Speaker 5: But Justine's a Gemini and he's a Libra and they're
- 39:53Speaker 5: destined best friends.
- 39:56Speaker 9: We're all air elements.
- 40:00Speaker 1: What are you?
- 40:01Speaker 2: I'm Leo.
- 40:01Speaker 1: What does that mean?
- 40:04Speaker 3: Yes, a lot of fire energy. She can be the
- 40:06Speaker 3: loudest in the room, but she could also sit back.
- 40:08Speaker 3: Everyone loves Leo's okay that is.
- 40:11Speaker 1: Everyone says Leo. Yeah.
- 40:15Speaker 3: I told Justin when he first walked in here, I
- 40:17Speaker 3: went to see I was hanging out one of his
- 40:19Speaker 3: friends recently, and every new person I meet somehow we
- 40:23Speaker 3: get on the subject of psychics and astrology. And she
- 40:26Speaker 3: told me, oh my gosh, well, if you are into
- 40:28Speaker 3: this stuff, go see my psychic.
- 40:29Speaker 2: I drove to this man's house two days later.
- 40:31Speaker 1: Where was it?
- 40:32Speaker 2: Beverly would and I said.
- 40:34Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean I put my all my trust in
- 40:38Speaker 3: your friend. I drove up to this man's house. But
- 40:41Speaker 3: when I got there, he knew my two other psychics,
- 40:43Speaker 3: so I knew I was safe.
- 40:44Speaker 2: But it's like everything you're to tell you not to, don't.
- 40:47Speaker 1: Drive to stranger Now she claims to be a psychic.
- 40:51Speaker 2: I show my team I had an appointment. They were like, yeah,
- 40:53Speaker 2: we know where you're going.
- 40:54Speaker 1: So what did what did the psychic tell you to do?
- 40:56Speaker 3: So I walk into a Sylvan's home and there's all
- 40:59Speaker 3: these torahs, all like stacks of them, and he pulls
- 41:03Speaker 3: out a chair for me at his dining table. His
- 41:04Speaker 3: son's in the background, doors wide open, he's chain smoking,
- 41:08Speaker 3: and he had me flip to a random page in
- 41:11Speaker 3: the torah and then he just started writing things down
- 41:14Speaker 3: and it was all accurate.
- 41:16Speaker 1: What was it?
- 41:17Speaker 2: It was some.
- 41:18Speaker 3: Really exciting things about work and my personal life.
- 41:22Speaker 2: And just every time I talk.
- 41:23Speaker 3: To these psychics, I leave the sessions thinking, Okay, I'm
- 41:27Speaker 3: exactly where I'm supposed to be, and it just has
- 41:29Speaker 3: that's a great feeling.
- 41:30Speaker 1: Yes, that's a great feeling.
- 41:32Speaker 3: Alignment, Yes, and that's that's a wonderful feeling when you're
- 41:35Speaker 3: running your own thing and running a startup and running
- 41:38Speaker 3: your own company. To have that reassurance and validation has
- 41:41Speaker 3: really helped me as a leader.
- 41:42Speaker 2: That's why I'm so tapped into that shit.
- 41:45Speaker 1: So that's that's a really good point, because I think
- 41:48Speaker 1: one thing that I've really worked hard on, I'm a
- 41:51Speaker 1: very forward thinking person. I think into the future, and
- 41:54Speaker 1: I live in the future sometimes as opposed to living
- 41:57Speaker 1: in the present and feeling like I on the path
- 42:01Speaker 1: and on the journey. Whether a psychic tells me or
- 42:04Speaker 1: not is so important to me being able to communicate
- 42:09Speaker 1: to them in a way that it can be received.
- 42:12Speaker 1: Because if I'm like, oh my god, we have to
- 42:13Speaker 1: get this done, oh my god, you know it doesn't
- 42:15Speaker 1: have you gone.
- 42:16Speaker 6: To see so lon?
- 42:18Speaker 1: No, I haven't should I Yeah, I think you should.
- 42:20Speaker 2: But I've got a couple that I.
- 42:21Speaker 1: Can was he the best? You have others?
- 42:23Speaker 2: I they're all different.
- 42:25Speaker 1: A marathon. I have a little psychic marathon.
- 42:28Speaker 3: I've got an entire soccer team of psychics. Like I
- 42:31Speaker 3: keep thinking, like, when I get married, I'm fucked because
- 42:34Speaker 3: my friends are going to just absolutely roast me with that.
- 42:37Speaker 2: There's no way that like every speech isn't going to
- 42:39Speaker 2: be like and then her period of her.
- 42:42Speaker 1: Psychics, you know, like did the psychic.
- 42:44Speaker 8: Tell you special table?
- 42:45Speaker 2: Oh my god, I mean psych invited they really like.
- 42:50Speaker 1: Table thirteen, Table thirteen. Did they tell the psychics tell
- 42:53Speaker 1: you that you're going to get married and they're going
- 42:54Speaker 1: to do Yeah?
- 42:55Speaker 3: They told me when to get married, and they said
- 42:56Speaker 3: that they see three kids for me and three three.
- 43:00Speaker 2: Yeah, I've always wanted three.
- 43:01Speaker 1: They all say the same thing, the same thing. Do
- 43:03Speaker 1: you think they call each other like double check their notes?
- 43:05Speaker 2: Well, I that's what I do. I double check their notes.
- 43:08Speaker 3: I write things down and record everything, and I make
- 43:10Speaker 3: sure that these guys aren't just scamming me.
- 43:13Speaker 1: So they don't think you're gonna dialog. I'm not gonna
- 43:15Speaker 1: think you're gonna get married. They think you're gonna have
- 43:17Speaker 1: three kids.
- 43:17Speaker 2: They said this is the year, So.
- 43:19Speaker 1: This is the year. Wow, that's not a pressure to
- 43:22Speaker 1: put on this year. Have you have you found it yet?
- 43:24Speaker 2: I'm not putting pressure on this year.
- 43:26Speaker 3: I'm just enjoying my life and and it actually takes
- 43:29Speaker 3: the pressure off because it made me realize it will happen.
- 43:32Speaker 2: Okay, I'm going to be fine.
- 43:33Speaker 6: She needs to come to your event tomorro night.
- 43:35Speaker 3: Oh it's a singles event, just in single release at
- 43:38Speaker 3: a singles just talk about the process behind this, and
- 43:41Speaker 3: let's also talk about your single.
- 43:43Speaker 1: Yes, so I have a single. It's like a very
- 43:46Speaker 1: fun summer single. It's called ready to Blow. It's about
- 43:49Speaker 1: being in a the beginning of a relationship and feeling
- 43:55Speaker 1: like you know that you're ready to take some version
- 43:58Speaker 1: of a plunge forward, and that person is not giving
- 44:02Speaker 1: you the signs, so they're like, sometimes they feel like
- 44:05Speaker 1: they're totally in, and sometimes they feel like they don't know,
- 44:08Speaker 1: and you're just like, hey, are you ready? Are you
- 44:11Speaker 1: going to do this? Are we going to do this?
- 44:13Speaker 1: I don't know if you've been there, but I have
- 44:15Speaker 1: been there.
- 44:16Speaker 2: Yeah many a time.
- 44:19Speaker 1: Yes, And funnily enough, that girl is not coming. I
- 44:24Speaker 1: don't well, actually I didn't invite her the event.
- 44:26Speaker 2: To my girl, you wrote the song about the girl I.
- 44:27Speaker 1: Wrote the song about. I should invite to the event.
- 44:29Speaker 2: This girl said girl.
- 44:31Speaker 1: No, okay, okay, no, no, no, no, you might know
- 44:33Speaker 1: she's she's well.
- 44:34Speaker 2: Well, we won't do that.
- 44:36Speaker 1: Yeah, I can tell you who she is, one of
- 44:38Speaker 1: your podcast.
- 44:38Speaker 2: Girls in New York. Sorry, but your ax I don't know.
- 44:44Speaker 1: Yeah, probably, Yeah, I like to be I'm friends with.
- 44:47Speaker 2: Most of my great songs about all of your exes,
- 44:49Speaker 2: like Taylor Swift.
- 44:51Speaker 1: I wrote, So I write songs about a lot of
- 44:52Speaker 1: my exes.
- 44:52Speaker 2: Yeah, that would make sense.
- 44:54Speaker 3: Though. I feel like if I was a musician and
- 44:55Speaker 3: had a good voice, that would also be a lot
- 44:57Speaker 3: of my.
- 44:59Speaker 1: Well, it's it's ru It's like a processing of you know,
- 45:02Speaker 1: how to how to, And there's one song that I
- 45:05Speaker 1: wrote about that particular ex that you know that might
- 45:09Speaker 1: come out at some point.
- 45:11Speaker 5: She does.
- 45:11Speaker 2: How does that conversation go, Hey, I wrote a song
- 45:14Speaker 2: about you to.
- 45:14Speaker 1: Approve, I mean kind of you know. It's so funny
- 45:17Speaker 1: because Stargazing is about my college acts. And before it
- 45:21Speaker 1: came out I called her. I was like, hey, I
- 45:24Speaker 1: wrote the song about you.
- 45:25Speaker 3: I wrote this huge hit about you.
- 45:30Speaker 1: Yeah, and and funnily enough, I then I've been working
- 45:33Speaker 1: on a screenplay about what if my ex sued me
- 45:37Speaker 1: for writing that song about her?
- 45:39Speaker 2: Could happen?
- 45:40Speaker 1: Technically, yes, the letter, the owner of a letter owns,
- 45:44Speaker 1: the writer of a letter owns the copyright. So technically,
- 45:47Speaker 1: if I verbatim, if she wrote the lyrics to Stargazing
- 45:50Speaker 1: in a letter to me and then I took that
- 45:53Speaker 1: and made it's not what happened. So it's a fictionalized
- 45:56Speaker 1: version of what could happen, and all the characters switch around.
- 45:59Speaker 1: But there's a fictionalized screenplay version of what if my
- 46:03Speaker 1: ex sued me for writing Stargazing about her? And I
- 46:06Speaker 1: probably have to call her again before that gets into theaters,
- 46:13Speaker 1: which is very far away. Yeah, I'm on pretty good
- 46:16Speaker 1: terms with most of my exes.
- 46:18Speaker 6: Okay.
- 46:18Speaker 3: So this new song called ready to Blow is an
- 46:22Speaker 3: ex as.
- 46:22Speaker 1: Well, it is technically about an ex okay.
- 46:26Speaker 2: And when's it coming out?
- 46:27Speaker 1: It's coming out on the fifteenth, okay, but tomorrow is
- 46:29Speaker 1: the Tomorrow's the release party, which we did a week early.
- 46:33Speaker 1: I wish I could come sad It's okay, next time,
- 46:35Speaker 1: there'll be more.
- 46:36Speaker 3: What was the thought process behind the singles party with
- 46:40Speaker 3: the single is?
- 46:41Speaker 1: So I got a call from a friend of mine
- 46:44Speaker 1: who works at a matchmaking service called Talkify okay, and
- 46:49Speaker 1: she wanted to feature me as like an eligible bachelor
- 46:54Speaker 1: on their new that they were going to call it
- 46:56Speaker 1: Man Crush Mondays but now they're calling it Matchmaker Mondays.
- 46:58Speaker 1: I was like, I'm flattered.
- 46:59Speaker 2: Sure, yeah, love feature.
- 47:01Speaker 3: You were the perfect person to be featured literally like
- 47:05Speaker 3: happiest guy come on, that would be epic.
- 47:08Speaker 1: So she's like, I want to feature you in this
- 47:10Speaker 1: in this Man Crushed Monday series. And then we got
- 47:12Speaker 1: talking and I was like, well, I have this new
- 47:14Speaker 1: I originally was for a closer. I was like, I
- 47:15Speaker 1: have the single, you know, maybe you could use that
- 47:18Speaker 1: and we could do like some cross promotional stuff. And
- 47:20Speaker 1: then we got down the line to she wanted to
- 47:23Speaker 1: throw an event, and I was like, Okay, well, why
- 47:26Speaker 1: don't we make it a release party because I have
- 47:28Speaker 1: the single coming out? And she's like, oh, I love
- 47:30Speaker 1: that a singles single event.
- 47:33Speaker 3: Love.
- 47:33Speaker 1: Great. So we're run a rooftop in Santa Monica, so
- 47:36Speaker 1: fun tomorrow and we're going to do thirty minutes talking
- 47:40Speaker 1: about I'm going to be in conversation with a matchmaker
- 47:42Speaker 1: about intentional dating and then and then I'm going to
- 47:45Speaker 1: do a little little performance.
- 47:47Speaker 2: Great.
- 47:47Speaker 1: Yeah, that's totally fun.
- 47:49Speaker 2: I'm sad you're not so bummed.
- 47:50Speaker 1: It's okay.
- 47:51Speaker 3: I love that you're also trying to be intentional about dating.
- 47:54Speaker 1: Yeah, how is that for You's? What should we switch
- 47:56Speaker 1: to gear? We're not going to This is about you
- 47:58Speaker 1: and your dating.
- 47:59Speaker 2: Life, exactly about you.
- 48:00Speaker 1: I can talk about mine intentionally. I'm an open book.
- 48:03Speaker 2: You're single, I'm single, Okay, everyone justin single?
- 48:08Speaker 1: Hello?
- 48:09Speaker 2: Okay, you three? What is what is the subject?
- 48:13Speaker 6: Real quick?
- 48:14Speaker 2: Before you try to go in on me again?
- 48:16Speaker 3: You three, what is the funniest thing that's ever happened
- 48:19Speaker 3: to you guys while working together?
- 48:22Speaker 6: Oh god?
- 48:25Speaker 2: Someone's biggest fuck up.
- 48:26Speaker 3: Yeah, we could go either biggest up that turned out
- 48:30Speaker 3: to maybe be funny at the end, or maybe not funny.
- 48:33Speaker 4: How do we talk about this without throwing throwing any
- 48:35Speaker 4: third parties under the bus?
- 48:37Speaker 1: You know that's kind of hard. Who are we?
- 48:39Speaker 3: Oh?
- 48:39Speaker 1: You want you don't want to throw the I think okay,
- 48:42Speaker 1: let me think about this, they asked me on the
- 48:44Speaker 1: way up here. Dylan was like, is there anything I
- 48:46Speaker 1: shouldn't say? And I was like, no, you can say
- 48:47Speaker 1: whatever you want.
- 48:49Speaker 3: I love when people come over and they go, can
- 48:51Speaker 3: we curse on this thing? Like, yeah, I had alo
- 48:56Speaker 3: on recently and this guy, like every other I love
- 48:58Speaker 3: him so much.
- 48:59Speaker 2: Every other word was.
- 49:00Speaker 1: Like what the fuck?
- 49:01Speaker 2: What the fuck? And then I did like it was crazy.
- 49:05Speaker 2: It actually went the most viral because.
- 49:07Speaker 1: So we should start Yeah, we should start saying that. Yeah,
- 49:11Speaker 1: I don't think.
- 49:13Speaker 5: You got So when we get the concepts from another
- 49:18Speaker 5: partner that we work.
- 49:19Speaker 6: With that does some ideation with us, we'll have it.
- 49:23Speaker 7: Sometimes the night before, including like sourcing talent.
- 49:27Speaker 8: So I got the box of cardboard.
- 49:31Speaker 5: I was like cutting it into all these different sizes
- 49:34Speaker 5: to put the song lyrics on.
- 49:36Speaker 6: But I'm like they're they're off.
- 49:38Speaker 5: Shooting something in the street, and then I'm like trying
- 49:40Speaker 5: to get these signs done.
- 49:41Speaker 7: And then I ended up having the tent the other
- 49:44Speaker 7: talent that.
- 49:44Speaker 5: Was there, like here, help me with this, and we
- 49:46Speaker 5: got it done, thankfully. But it's just like sometimes it
- 49:50Speaker 5: just comes down to the last second and you just
- 49:52Speaker 5: have to roll with it or get creative the day
- 49:55Speaker 5: of or something's not working, just like make up hard
- 49:59Speaker 5: right and pivot. So I would say that was like
- 50:02Speaker 5: not quite a fuck up because we were able to
- 50:05Speaker 5: get it done. But I was like on the floor
- 50:08Speaker 5: with these markers, like hand drawing these signs, and I'm
- 50:11Speaker 5: just like I need some help, and I gave it
- 50:13Speaker 5: to the other guy like can you please just like
- 50:15Speaker 5: help me get through it, And then they went off
- 50:19Speaker 5: around the street to like shoot another concept, and I'm
- 50:22Speaker 5: running with the signs.
- 50:23Speaker 8: I'm like, wait, like, let's do this concept here.
- 50:26Speaker 5: I'm like waving the signs and then we yeah, we
- 50:29Speaker 5: would have maybe.
- 50:30Speaker 6: Not filmed it, but that was the location we could.
- 50:33Speaker 5: Have shot it at, So I'm like, wait a minute,
- 50:34Speaker 5: we just finished these and then just we got it done.
- 50:36Speaker 1: So I was getting I thought you were gonna go
- 50:39Speaker 1: with they give it us to us the night before,
- 50:42Speaker 1: and so sometimes they give it to us and they go, oh,
- 50:45Speaker 1: you need to cast this because we need And so
- 50:48Speaker 1: for the first shoot that we did, I was like,
- 50:50Speaker 1: well we don't. It's like twelve o'clock at night. We're
- 50:53Speaker 1: shooting tomorrow.
- 50:53Speaker 2: Always call me.
- 50:55Speaker 1: Would you come and be in it?
- 50:56Speaker 3: Yeah?
- 50:57Speaker 1: Are you sure?
- 50:58Speaker 2: Okay?
- 50:58Speaker 1: So what happened was Julie stepped up and she was
- 51:02Speaker 1: in all the content. I'm the content in the content, yes, yeah,
- 51:07Speaker 1: but that's that's also they're very melty talented. So she
- 51:10Speaker 1: actually is a fantastic actress. And so what what's so
- 51:14Speaker 1: funny is I'll get d MS from people being like,
- 51:16Speaker 1: is that your new girlfriend? Like she's so beautiful. I'm like, no,
- 51:19Speaker 1: that's that's Julie.
- 51:20Speaker 4: I have two I have two other funny stories. I
- 51:22Speaker 4: thought of.
- 51:23Speaker 1: One was when too odd for me? I can't know.
- 51:26Speaker 4: Two other stories that I feel like we were all
- 51:28Speaker 4: cracking up about. One is your dog, Elvis, who's here somewhere.
- 51:33Speaker 2: Elvis having a nice little Elvis.
- 51:34Speaker 1: Is just chilling.
- 51:35Speaker 4: Yeah, most chill dog ever. So we got breakfast burritos
- 51:39Speaker 4: last time on Joe and Elvis was jumping up on
- 51:44Speaker 4: the table trying to get two burritos that were like
- 51:46Speaker 4: fully weak working stuff. And I was like, I got it,
- 51:50Speaker 4: I got it. Don't worry, don't worry.
- 51:52Speaker 1: He's like, oh, I've got it. He goes, I just
- 51:54Speaker 1: I got this handled, Like okay, cool.
- 51:56Speaker 4: So I moved the burritos to the center right and
- 52:00Speaker 4: are fine, and Elvis can't get them. And then we
- 52:03Speaker 4: come back like half an hour later, and Justin had
- 52:08Speaker 4: left like a fully unwrapped half of his burrito open
- 52:13Speaker 4: on the edge of like sauce table that we couldn't
- 52:15Speaker 4: see with red and green sauces around, and Elvis ate
- 52:18Speaker 4: the entire burrito and also knocked the sauces onto like
- 52:22Speaker 4: a fancy white chair.
- 52:26Speaker 5: Say yes, oh, we made it into content. We made
- 52:29Speaker 5: a bit out of it, and we found it bit.
- 52:32Speaker 5: We were mortified because it's so unlike him.
- 52:34Speaker 3: We're like, I know, I mean, this dog is the
- 52:36Speaker 3: chillist dog I've ever.
- 52:37Speaker 5: Seen in my life unless you have Mexican around, and
- 52:40Speaker 5: then he's just.
- 52:41Speaker 1: And he ate it. It was like a large burrito
- 52:43Speaker 1: that it was huge.
- 52:45Speaker 2: Oh my god, your poor.
- 52:46Speaker 1: Chair, I know. So I think Dylan probably felt pretty awful.
- 52:49Speaker 1: I just felt felt really bad.
- 52:50Speaker 5: Yeah, I was also feeling bad for you because you've
- 52:54Speaker 5: got the blame.
- 52:54Speaker 6: For it, I know, Justin.
- 52:56Speaker 1: But then I can throw it back again. Why it
- 53:00Speaker 1: was fine. He was like, I'm going to clean the
- 53:03Speaker 1: I'm gonna make sure that the burritos.
- 53:04Speaker 2: And very had a character for the young.
- 53:08Speaker 4: So that was one, and then the other one was
- 53:10Speaker 4: with the tennis ball and the pan.
- 53:12Speaker 1: Oh yeah, you should have done it, man.
- 53:14Speaker 4: Yeah, So I knew I didn't want to be holding
- 53:17Speaker 4: the pan in this video. I just had a bad
- 53:18Speaker 4: feeling about it, like, oh, omen right, hold the pan.
- 53:23Speaker 4: Our buddy, our buddy who was on the crew who
- 53:25Speaker 4: was helping to film, He's like, oh, I'll stand in,
- 53:28Speaker 4: and he stands in, and I don't know what overtook Justin.
- 53:31Speaker 4: You can speak to it. But Justin took the tennis
- 53:34Speaker 4: ball and was like joking around throwing it at him,
- 53:37Speaker 4: but through like pretty fast rated his stomach and he
- 53:41Speaker 4: and he looked at me like yeah, and he was
- 53:43Speaker 4: just like shocked. He was so shocked that I threw
- 53:45Speaker 4: it at him, yeah, because I was just kind of
- 53:48Speaker 4: and it's a it was a hard throw, yeah, like
- 53:52Speaker 4: hit him but like I come from brothers, so for me,
- 53:55Speaker 4: like the idea of like you know, oh there's a
- 53:57Speaker 4: ball and like, oh you throw it at somebody, Like,
- 54:00Speaker 4: wasn't that crazy? But this guy was like I can't
- 54:02Speaker 4: believe you said and it rattled him for like twenty minutes.
- 54:05Speaker 1: Anyway, that was my fuck.
- 54:06Speaker 2: He never talked to me again.
- 54:07Speaker 1: No, and then he was even crazier. Later we did
- 54:10Speaker 1: some other Yeah, he was awesome.
- 54:12Speaker 4: No, he was a great sport.
- 54:13Speaker 6: He was a really really good sport.
- 54:14Speaker 2: That's very funny. He could have ended one of two ways.
- 54:17Speaker 1: Yes, yeah, I could have ended up we're trying not
- 54:20Speaker 1: to be sued.
- 54:21Speaker 3: That's kind of I was just gonna say, Dylan, what
- 54:24Speaker 3: advice would you give someone who's looking to become a
- 54:27Speaker 3: chief of staff to an artist?
- 54:29Speaker 4: Hmmm, Well, I think the advice I would give is
- 54:34Speaker 4: in music. I think every artist's operation is pretty unique,
- 54:37Speaker 4: so I don't think there's like any kind of one
- 54:39Speaker 4: size fits all advice. I would say I found ways
- 54:44Speaker 4: in music to help out other artists, just following my
- 54:49Speaker 4: gut in terms of like what I'm a fan of,
- 54:51Speaker 4: Like that's what has led me to an ultimately very
- 54:54Speaker 4: underground alternative hip hop music that has kind of led
- 54:58Speaker 4: me to like where I am now and this really
- 55:00Speaker 4: weird way, but with yees sparing you all kind of
- 55:03Speaker 4: like my life story, Like I would say, just follow
- 55:07Speaker 4: what's in your gut and what you're actually interested in.
- 55:09Speaker 4: Like we're talking about music, so you should work with
- 55:12Speaker 4: people whose music you actually love, you know.
- 55:15Speaker 1: Yeah, and I'm going to start making alternative hip hop music.
- 55:22Speaker 4: Yeah, I do love Justin's and I've seen like I
- 55:27Speaker 4: remember back in college. I'm pretty sure I saw you
- 55:30Speaker 4: play in like these dive bars in the Lower East Side,
- 55:33Speaker 4: like that kind of thing. So it's like it's been
- 55:34Speaker 4: really moving to see him play, Like I saw him
- 55:37Speaker 4: play a Barkleys with Kigo, and like it's it's just
- 55:39Speaker 4: kind of insane. Yeah, and it's inspiring, and so it's yeah,
- 55:44Speaker 4: it's cool.
- 55:45Speaker 1: It's cool to be a part of it.
- 55:47Speaker 7: Great answer, surround yourself with people that inspire you. You
- 55:50Speaker 7: can't go wrong.
- 55:52Speaker 1: Is that your official advice or is that your comment
- 55:54Speaker 1: on No, just.
- 55:55Speaker 2: My I think it's it's sort of what you just said.
- 55:58Speaker 3: It's it's working for people who you're aligned with and
- 56:01Speaker 3: who inspire you and are on a similar creative path
- 56:06Speaker 3: maybe and who you share the same goals with.
- 56:08Speaker 5: M H.
- 56:09Speaker 2: I feel like when I was working certain jobs, it
- 56:12Speaker 2: wasn't as motivated to be.
- 56:13Speaker 3: The best version of Megan if I wasn't aligned with
- 56:17Speaker 3: the person I was working.
- 56:18Speaker 5: For, right.
- 56:18Speaker 3: I think my last role, when I was there for
- 56:21Speaker 3: six years, that was different because I felt like that
- 56:24Speaker 3: was that was really when I started to find myself
- 56:27Speaker 3: in those years when I was supporting Jen. But if
- 56:30Speaker 3: I didn't have the company, I think I'd still be
- 56:31Speaker 3: someone's assistant. I loved it, and I loved supporting an
- 56:35Speaker 3: actor who I loved, producing someone's life who I really
- 56:38Speaker 3: respected and cared about.
- 56:40Speaker 2: I thought it was the best seat in the house.
- 56:42Speaker 2: You know. I learned so much and I would do
- 56:44Speaker 2: it all again and to.
- 56:46Speaker 1: Be able to influence that growth.
- 56:47Speaker 3: Yeah yeah, I mean it was such a great partnership.
- 56:50Speaker 3: So I love your guys partnership. It's nice to see.
- 56:55Speaker 1: Thanks.
- 56:55Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 56:56Speaker 4: Yeah, it's been so fun like this is. I've only
- 56:58Speaker 4: been in LA a couple of years.
- 56:59Speaker 1: And I'm loving it.
- 57:00Speaker 4: I'm loving this this year.
- 57:02Speaker 1: Yeah, the best so far.
- 57:04Speaker 3: To Julie, what would your advice be to someone who's
- 57:06Speaker 3: trying to be a head of social.
- 57:08Speaker 2: For an artist.
- 57:09Speaker 5: Well, I do have a college degree, but I don't
- 57:11Speaker 5: necessarily believe that you have to.
- 57:14Speaker 6: Have one this day and age.
- 57:16Speaker 5: As long as you have a really good grasp on
- 57:19Speaker 5: you know, you're tuning into social media every single day.
- 57:22Speaker 5: Social changes in a blink of an eye.
- 57:24Speaker 6: Really even keeps people.
- 57:25Speaker 5: Like me on my toes and to be engaging in
- 57:28Speaker 5: the community communities, knowing the different trends, following certain accounts
- 57:32Speaker 5: like I'll just throw Gary V out there like powerful
- 57:34Speaker 5: people in the social space, know what's going on.
- 57:36Speaker 6: Be ahead of the curve.
- 57:38Speaker 7: Sorry, I'm doing a lot of this right now, but
- 57:39Speaker 7: I just mean business, Okay.
- 57:41Speaker 8: Mean business.
- 57:43Speaker 5: So I would also be very proactive. Don't wait for
- 57:46Speaker 5: somebody to say yes to you. Go out and get
- 57:49Speaker 5: client accounts like some of my early client accounts, or
- 57:53Speaker 5: like mom and pop kind of restaurants and filming their
- 57:55Speaker 5: food content, going into the kitchen and doing almost like some.
- 58:00Speaker 2: U GC work.
- 58:00Speaker 5: Start a portfolio because then that's going to grow and
- 58:03Speaker 5: expand your business and then potentially pitch to new clients.
- 58:07Speaker 6: So you need a portfolio to get more clients and
- 58:12Speaker 6: get more work.
- 58:13Speaker 5: Right, So I would I would suggest that and then
- 58:17Speaker 5: keep track of all of your metrics. Because there's one
- 58:20Speaker 5: thing to make content, it's another thing to actually make
- 58:23Speaker 5: content that's expansive and engaging and why would someone.
- 58:27Speaker 6: Pay you money where it's not going anywhere. There's so
- 58:30Speaker 6: much that goes into it.
- 58:32Speaker 8: But what's built into the platform is.
- 58:34Speaker 5: Everything that you need to succeed, including the algorithm. Take
- 58:37Speaker 5: a look at the insights, get the numbers, see what's
- 58:40Speaker 5: working and what's not, and then make pivots with your
- 58:43Speaker 5: content and provide that for your client so that you
- 58:45Speaker 5: know you can make certain adjustments on your next shoot
- 58:48Speaker 5: and help them grow and expand. And that's what's going
- 58:50Speaker 5: to grow and expand your business.
- 58:52Speaker 7: So I'm I'm a really big data nerd.
- 58:56Speaker 5: Love numbers because that's ultimately like what is going to
- 58:59Speaker 5: feed you into like the best content that you can
- 59:02Speaker 5: possibly get for your audience.
- 59:04Speaker 7: So that would be my advice, like.
- 59:06Speaker 8: Just there, I go get it, Go get it.
- 59:08Speaker 5: Don't stop working and just put yourself out there and
- 59:11Speaker 5: build your portfolio.
- 59:13Speaker 1: I thought you were going to say, only work with
- 59:14Speaker 1: people who cry when you first meet them.
- 59:16Speaker 8: Oh, well that too, Yeah, I was sold.
- 59:19Speaker 2: I also love the well you don't technically have to
- 59:21Speaker 2: go to college.
- 59:22Speaker 3: Now you having on here to talk to all the
- 59:24Speaker 3: younger kids yet to college.
- 59:26Speaker 2: Let me gip it.
- 59:27Speaker 8: Having a degree does help, because it does.
- 59:29Speaker 5: It does give you, like my my degrees and journalism
- 59:32Speaker 5: and public relations.
- 59:33Speaker 6: I is in theater, but it's like getting to know.
- 59:35Speaker 5: The psychology between the consumer and like having a background
- 59:38Speaker 5: and strong knowledge and marketing is very helpful in the
- 59:41Speaker 5: social space.
- 59:42Speaker 1: I'm sure.
- 59:43Speaker 3: I mean as a recruiter, I'm going to now tell
- 59:44Speaker 3: you guys, definitely go to college because when I look
- 59:46Speaker 3: at your resume, I need to see a college degree.
- 59:49Speaker 2: It will separate you. Go to college. But that's amazing advice.
- 59:54Speaker 1: Go to college because you'll meet people that you want
- 59:56Speaker 1: to work with in college.
- 59:57Speaker 2: Yes, yes, way to tie it back justin.
- 1:00:00Speaker 1: Yeah, I always trying to figure it out.
- 1:00:02Speaker 2: Yeah, okay, justin.
- 1:00:03Speaker 3: What's your advice to someone who wants to grow up
- 1:00:06Speaker 3: and become a musician or tap into the music industry
- 1:00:08Speaker 3: or be a justin Jesso and posting on stage.
- 1:00:11Speaker 1: With Kaig going to finance. No, I'm kidding. I have
- 1:00:14Speaker 1: two pieces of advice that I generally give, and the
- 1:00:17Speaker 1: first one is fitting in this context, which is work
- 1:00:23Speaker 1: with people around you. I think one of the things
- 1:00:26Speaker 1: that not that I made the mistake of early, but
- 1:00:29Speaker 1: that I think everybody thinks is that they need Oh
- 1:00:33Speaker 1: if I just had that big manager, or if I
- 1:00:36Speaker 1: just had that big writer that I could work with,
- 1:00:39Speaker 1: if I could just get in the room with Ryan Tedder,
- 1:00:41Speaker 1: I'd be great, right And for me, I learned very
- 1:00:45Speaker 1: early on working with actually a colleague of ours, that
- 1:00:49Speaker 1: the music that I did and the projects that I
- 1:00:53Speaker 1: worked on with the people who were my peers, who
- 1:00:56Speaker 1: were around me, who were climbing that same journey, that passion,
- 1:01:02Speaker 1: and that whatever that product ended up being, was the
- 1:01:06Speaker 1: thing that moved the needle for me. So the advice
- 1:01:09Speaker 1: that I have is, if you have a friend, if
- 1:01:13Speaker 1: you're trying to be an artist and you have a
- 1:01:14Speaker 1: friend that's a producer, don't go and work with them.
- 1:01:18Speaker 1: Don't go, oh, well, I don't know because of this,
- 1:01:19Speaker 1: that or the other. I'm going to save my time
- 1:01:21Speaker 1: to try to get to this next run. Like, work
- 1:01:24Speaker 1: with the people around you, because you're going to create
- 1:01:26Speaker 1: something really special and meaningful that moves the needle with
- 1:01:30Speaker 1: those people, because they're going to care as deeply as
- 1:01:32Speaker 1: you do. So that's the first piece of such good advice.
- 1:01:36Speaker 1: And the second piece of advice is, funnily enough, also
- 1:01:41Speaker 1: very fitting for this, which is get an internship. One
- 1:01:44Speaker 1: of the ways that I was able to forge my
- 1:01:48Speaker 1: way through this industry was I was an intern and
- 1:01:52Speaker 1: I worked at Emi Music Publishing and I worked for
- 1:01:54Speaker 1: Jake Apman and Rich Christina, and those were my first
- 1:01:56Speaker 1: two bosses, and I was a kick ass intern and
- 1:01:59Speaker 1: when I graduated, those were the guys who started putting
- 1:02:02Speaker 1: me in sessions as a writer. And so you need
- 1:02:05Speaker 1: to be able to make the work with creative people
- 1:02:08Speaker 1: that have the same vision and passion and drive you have,
- 1:02:11Speaker 1: and then you need to be able to manifest that
- 1:02:14Speaker 1: work into the I don't think manifest their word. You
- 1:02:17Speaker 1: have to be able to leverage that work with industry connections.
- 1:02:22Speaker 1: And the way that you do that is by being
- 1:02:24Speaker 1: of service. And so if you are in a position
- 1:02:27Speaker 1: where you're of service and people respect the service that
- 1:02:30Speaker 1: you're giving them, then ultimately those people are going to
- 1:02:34Speaker 1: turn around and say, Okay, what do you want and
- 1:02:36Speaker 1: how can we help? And that's where my career started,
- 1:02:40Speaker 1: when I was able to make that work and make
- 1:02:43Speaker 1: that content with peers of mine and then leverage the
- 1:02:46Speaker 1: connections that I had because I was of service to
- 1:02:48Speaker 1: them period.
- 1:02:49Speaker 3: I mean, I think going to work for someone who
- 1:02:52Speaker 3: you respect in that same industry that you would like
- 1:02:54Speaker 3: to eventually be in, and put in all the years
- 1:02:57Speaker 3: of the annoying admin work and do the things that
- 1:02:59Speaker 3: you don't want to do orn the trust, and then
- 1:03:01Speaker 3: when you graduate from that job, they're here to help.
- 1:03:04Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:03:05Speaker 1: Yeah, and I know that. I'm sure you have a
- 1:03:07Speaker 1: very similar story or stories.
- 1:03:10Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:03:10Speaker 1: I mean we even talked about our mutual friend.
- 1:03:13Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:03:13Speaker 3: I have so many mentors and I labeled them that
- 1:03:16Speaker 3: I said, you're my mentor. But I talked to all
- 1:03:19Speaker 3: of my mentors on.
- 1:03:20Speaker 2: A weekly basis.
- 1:03:22Speaker 3: They've sent me clients, they've sent me business, they recommend
- 1:03:25Speaker 3: me to people, they connect me to people, and that's all.
- 1:03:28Speaker 2: That's the majority of my job is to meet.
- 1:03:29Speaker 3: People and earn their trust so they would like and
- 1:03:32Speaker 3: give them the best experience. But I wouldn't be in
- 1:03:34Speaker 3: the seat without my mentors at least opening the door
- 1:03:38Speaker 3: a little bit for me saying Okay, go talk to me.
- 1:03:40Speaker 1: Because you're so good at what you do. It's because
- 1:03:43Speaker 1: you demonstrated that you're so good at what you do
- 1:03:45Speaker 1: that they have that implicit trust with you to trust
- 1:03:48Speaker 1: you to continue to fill that role for them.
- 1:03:49Speaker 2: Yeah, it's been fun.
- 1:03:51Speaker 3: But anyways, at the end of this we usually either
- 1:03:54Speaker 3: brank phone, call someone, or do like a little bit.
- 1:03:56Speaker 1: So oh great, we could want to call my mom.
- 1:03:59Speaker 2: We could brank your or you could I don't know.
- 1:04:02Speaker 2: Do you want to like sing something? It's up to you.

- 1:04:09Speaker 1: do both?
- 1:04:10Speaker 2: We could do both?
- 1:04:10Speaker 10: Yeah?
- 1:04:10Speaker 2: Do you want to do a little bit from your
- 1:04:13Speaker 2: from your new single?

- 1:04:18Speaker 1: Do you want me to like cube the track? What
