- 0:00Speaker 1: Well, if you were listening to the show after eleven
- 0:02Speaker 1: o'clock yesterday, you would have heard here on the show,
- 0:05Speaker 1: well that a crocodile had attacked a little staffy down
- 0:09Speaker 1: at the Dripstone Cliffs just there at the beach at Casuarina.
- 0:12Speaker 1: It was pretty horrifying stuff to hear from Parks and
- 0:15Speaker 1: Wildlife about exactly what had gone on. But joining me
- 0:18Speaker 1: right now is the owner of that staffy, Banjo.
- 0:22Speaker 2: It is Tom Cummins. Good morning to you, Tom.
- 0:26Speaker 3: Good morning Katie.
- 0:27Speaker 1: Tom.
- 0:28Speaker 2: What happened with Banjo yesterday morning?
- 0:32Speaker 3: Well, we're just going for a normal, normal walk down
- 0:35Speaker 3: the beach and sort of on the way back, he
- 0:39Speaker 3: went for a bit of a paddle, like knee deep water,
- 0:43Speaker 3: and he went to a bit of a paddle and
- 0:46Speaker 3: thy sure, I had a yelp, and the crocodile had
- 0:48Speaker 3: a minute mark and it just happened in an instance,
- 0:53Speaker 3: and he must have thought it was a dog or
- 0:54Speaker 3: something attacking, so he just turned around and bit the crocodile,
- 0:58Speaker 3: and the crocodile let go.
- 1:01Speaker 2: Oh my goodness.
- 1:02Speaker 3: Well he came to the came back to the shore
- 1:05Speaker 3: and he was looking back. I don't wanted to go
- 1:07Speaker 3: back and have another go or not, you know, but
- 1:10Speaker 3: the crocodile can't go away. It was just floating away there.
- 1:14Speaker 1: Tom had Banjo run towards the crocodile or or what happened.
- 1:19Speaker 3: I think it was an active sight. I think he
- 1:23Speaker 3: went in the water and the crocodile just happened to
- 1:25Speaker 3: be there, you know, But not one hundred percent sure that.
- 1:29Speaker 3: But yeah, it was quite a nice looking like a
- 1:33Speaker 3: salted looking crocodile, and was a dark crocodile like you
- 1:36Speaker 3: see in the rivers and creeks, you know. So yeah,
- 1:40Speaker 3: any idea was a good looking crocodile.
- 1:44Speaker 1: Would be better looking if it stied away from your
- 1:46Speaker 1: dog though, Tom, Yeah, anydy do you have?
- 1:51Speaker 3: After that, he just we carried on walking and we
- 1:54Speaker 3: we crossed the bridge at Rapid Creek. He came back
- 1:56Speaker 3: to Rapid cree and went to swim and Rapid Creek
- 1:59Speaker 3: because it was a little and uh then I got
- 2:01Speaker 3: a closer look at him and I put him in
- 2:04Speaker 3: the veggles to drive him home. I could say, these guys,
- 2:08Speaker 3: they're pretty bad. So we took him down to the
- 2:10Speaker 3: vet tasmin Chin. He's a very good vet and.
- 2:15Speaker 2: Oh that's where I go to.
- 2:17Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 2:17Speaker 2: Yeah, and what did Tasman say? What was he you know, like,
- 2:21Speaker 2: what was the reaction from your vet?
- 2:23Speaker 1: Yeah?
- 2:24Speaker 3: Well, you know we were sort of first inime. We
- 2:26Speaker 3: sort of jumped a q a bit and uh, he
- 2:29Speaker 3: was he looked at it and he was quite amazed
- 2:32Speaker 3: that he got away with it so much. But I
- 2:34Speaker 3: think it was the pressure of its jawels too around him.
- 2:38Speaker 3: He was his bruised underneath. On the top he's got
- 2:41Speaker 3: some lacerations, but underneath, And Tuzan said, well, you know,
- 2:47Speaker 3: if the if we shave him and stitch him up
- 2:50Speaker 3: and whatever else, there's more than age of getting in
- 2:52Speaker 3: section by doing that and leaving the wounds open around
- 2:57Speaker 3: let him, let him heal, you know. So yeah, oh, it's.
- 3:03Speaker 1: Always girlfriends, you know, it's plenty of frightening tom Any idea.
- 3:10Speaker 2: How big that crocodile was regular three meters?
- 3:14Speaker 3: I know the rangers said it could have only been
- 3:16Speaker 3: two meters, but the rangers aren't there. Yeah, regre was
- 3:19Speaker 3: three meters, but it was a must of this sort
- 3:22Speaker 3: of a really broad crocoders a fairly similar and the
- 3:26Speaker 3: seagoing crocodiles probably been pushed out from wherever it may
- 3:30Speaker 3: be around this time of the year, the fairly active
- 3:32Speaker 3: only Tom, what.
- 3:34Speaker 1: Was going through your head when you were walking and
- 3:36Speaker 1: you see this crocodile lunch at your staffy Banjo?
- 3:41Speaker 3: Well, Katie has not a lockcows from my head at
- 3:43Speaker 3: the best of times. But it was it was without thinking,
- 3:50Speaker 3: you know what I mean. It's just it all happened
- 3:52Speaker 3: in a flash. Really, I probably would have even the
- 3:56Speaker 3: nose except to give a bit of a yelp, and
- 3:57Speaker 3: I grabbed hold of him, and yeah, I looked in
- 4:01Speaker 3: and then it was all over. Within thirty seconds. He
- 4:03Speaker 3: bit back and it let go, you know.
- 4:05Speaker 2: So yeah, a tough, tough What a morning fight? What
- 4:12Speaker 2: a morning walk? Were you just thinking to yourself? Goodness mate,
- 4:15Speaker 2: thank god we're all okay, they say, not a.
- 4:20Speaker 3: Lot calls from my mind of the best. So I
- 4:22Speaker 3: just we just carried on as normal. But he comes
- 4:25Speaker 3: from the he was born down the Daily River, crocodile
- 4:29Speaker 3: wranglings in his blood, you know. So we got him
- 4:32Speaker 3: from a fisherman down the Daily he uh five years
- 4:35Speaker 3: he's five years old now and we're going from a
- 4:38Speaker 3: fisherman down there. So yeah, he's he's a pretty easy
- 4:43Speaker 3: going dog. But this other dog sort of upseting me.
- 4:46Speaker 3: Can be that way, but he loves humans. As a
- 4:50Speaker 3: cameraman this morning from This is Today show came here,
- 4:55Speaker 3: yeah and yeah, the cameraman was busy with his camera
- 4:58Speaker 3: on his Shouldren banger de side to the humpy's leg.
- 5:06Speaker 1: Oh, Cah, Banjo sounds like an absolute legend, and now
- 5:18Speaker 1: that he's famous, he's going to get up to no
- 5:20Speaker 1: good on By the sounds.
- 5:21Speaker 3: Of it, well, surprising old yesterday he just stot up old, Yes,
