- 0:03Speaker 1: It's back. Friday Power Rankings before Labor Day weekend. Todd, father,
- 0:08Speaker 1: are you mentally prepared for this?
- 0:11Speaker 2: Yes and no. Yes and no.
- 0:13Speaker 3: Okay.
- 0:14Speaker 1: Well, treat this like you're sitting on the couch during
- 0:17Speaker 1: a therapy session and tell me what you felt good about,
- 0:20Speaker 1: what you didn't feel good about.
- 0:21Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 0:22Speaker 1: One deep breath in.
- 0:23Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 0:24Speaker 6: Right.
- 0:25Speaker 1: You can do this with your eyes closed if you
- 0:26Speaker 1: memorize the list, but if not, you can.
- 0:28Speaker 2: Open them up.
- 0:31Speaker 1: Just give me the deep breath in deep breath out
- 0:35Speaker 1: get ready for people to throw absolute poison at you
- 0:39Speaker 1: in the comments and tell me what you have one
- 0:41Speaker 1: through ten.
- 0:43Speaker 7: All right i gotta go back into my list here
- 0:45Speaker 7: all right there she is i like the colors here
- 0:48Speaker 7: this is pretty cool so i am going brewers number
- 0:51Speaker 7: one uh you can see it on the screen right
- 0:53Speaker 7: or wrong no not yet okay it will be up
- 0:57Speaker 7: there at some point Yeah, so I'm going to go
- 0:59Speaker 7: Brewers at number one. I think they deserve that spot.
- 1:02Speaker 7: They've had a fantastic year. I don't care where the
- 1:05Speaker 7: Dodgers are at. They're going to be number two for
- 1:07Speaker 7: sure just because of their prowess and what they've been
- 1:10Speaker 7: doing throughout these last couple years and who they have
- 1:14Speaker 7: on the team. I'm going four straight National League Braves
- 1:18Speaker 7: and then Phillies. Everybody's like, oh, why the Phillies? Well,
- 1:21Speaker 7: the Phillies are a really good team. They're right there.
- 1:23Speaker 7: They're right where they need to be. Then I'm going Yankees.
- 1:26Speaker 7: Yankees got to figure it out just a little bit.
- 1:29Speaker 7: They're hit or miss right now. A couple injuries are
- 1:31Speaker 7: barring them from being very elite. Tampa Bay, I'm going
- 1:35Speaker 7: right behind them just because Tampa Bay is in front.
- 1:38Speaker 7: I still think the Yankees have a really good shot
- 1:39Speaker 7: of winning that division. Cubs have been dominant this last
- 1:43Speaker 7: couple weeks, if not months. Astros right behind them. White Sox,
- 1:48Speaker 7: then Red Sox are my top 10 right now. Any
- 1:54Speaker 7: problems with that, you let me know and we'll talk.
- 1:58Speaker 8: I'm going to tweet it out right now. I'm going
- 2:00Speaker 8: to tweet it out. Todd, you're such a loser. What
- 2:05Speaker 8: is your problem? My only.
- 2:09Speaker 1: Yeah, go ahead. Pick at it and then I'll help.
- 2:12Speaker 8: I have a hard time believing that you have the
- 2:20Speaker 8: Astros in the top 10. I don't think any... American
- 2:23Speaker 8: League West team has a shot of being there. But
- 2:27Speaker 8: I would question this. Are you a homer to the
- 2:29Speaker 8: Rays and the Yankees? The fact that you have the
- 2:32Speaker 8: Rays at six and the Yankees at five, even though
- 2:35Speaker 8: you said, ah, you know, they have some injuries. Did
- 2:38Speaker 8: you want to put the Yankees higher? Because the Rays
- 2:41Speaker 8: are winning this division. You wanted to.
- 2:44Speaker 3: That's a little homer.
- 2:46Speaker 2: I wanted to, but I'm being truthful.
- 2:51Speaker 8: That's who I need you to be.
- 2:52Speaker 7: When the Yankees are healthy, I think they're top three.
- 2:57Speaker 7: But they're not. There's no Aaron Judge. They're losing against
- 3:02Speaker 7: teams that they should be dominating against. You know, there's
- 3:06Speaker 7: some guys that aren't playing to their capabilities. So, yeah, no,
- 3:11Speaker 7: I still think they're top five for sure. But, you know,
- 3:15Speaker 7: when everybody's there, I mean, Cam Schlittler, beast. I mean,
- 3:20Speaker 7: how could you not? Cy Young Award, top five.
- 3:24Speaker 2: Let's go.
- 3:25Speaker 1: You think the Yankees are better than the Rays?
- 3:27Speaker 2: I do.
- 3:29Speaker 7: They might not have shown it, but I think in
- 3:32Speaker 7: a playoff game, if they had to face off each other,
- 3:35Speaker 7: I think the Yankees win.
- 3:36Speaker 9: Okay.
- 3:37Speaker 1: Kratz, do you feel the same way?
- 3:39Speaker 9: I do.
- 3:40Speaker 3: Okay.
- 3:40Speaker 1: So then lay it out for us. Give us your rankings.
- 3:43Speaker 2: Let's go, Kratz.
- 3:44Speaker 8: My rankings are very similar. To Todd's, they're mixed around
- 3:49Speaker 8: a little bit. I think the mixing around, I think,
- 3:51Speaker 8: is a little bit more important than maybe we put on.
- 3:55Speaker 8: Because these are the playoff teams here. I don't have
- 3:58Speaker 8: any American League West teams. I go Brewers, Dodgers, Braves, Yankees,
- 4:04Speaker 8: then Phillies. I think the Yankees have a little bit
- 4:08Speaker 8: of a deeper lineup, totally different type of lineup. Aaron
- 4:11Speaker 8: Judge is going to be back. Aaron Judge is going
- 4:13Speaker 8: to be healthy by the end of the year. So
- 4:15Speaker 8: I think that's... That's a huge thing. I think the Phillies...
- 4:18Speaker 8: I bumped the Phillies above the Rays because of the
- 4:22Speaker 8: adjustment that their guys have made at the plate. We
- 4:24Speaker 8: could go into a whole 15-minute session about the adjustment
- 4:27Speaker 8: that that lineup has made together. And Tom McCarthy talked
- 4:32Speaker 8: about it quite a bit, just about how they have made...
- 4:34Speaker 8: And it's worked. It's totally worked. It looks different. We'll
- 4:39Speaker 8: see if it plays in the playoffs or not. I
- 4:41Speaker 8: have the Cubs after the Rays. I have the Red
- 4:44Speaker 8: Sox as... the leader of the kind of the also-ands,
- 4:52Speaker 8: the also-runs. I think they're the best team that's not
- 4:55Speaker 8: winning a division, that's not the Yankees, that's not in
- 4:58Speaker 8: a National League team. And then the Guardians. For me,
- 5:01Speaker 8: the Guardians not being in the top 10, to me,
- 5:05Speaker 8: says you're not into pitching and defense. Does that pitching
- 5:09Speaker 8: and defense play in the playoffs? I don't know. Everybody
- 5:12Speaker 8: says they need homers. I think they may have made
- 5:15Speaker 8: one of the most underrated trades if this team pushes
- 5:19Speaker 8: deep into the playoffs with that pitching and defense, and
- 5:22Speaker 8: it's Joe Adele. Joe Adele, I'm not saying he's a
- 5:27Speaker 8: ridiculous all-star type of player, but since he's gone over
- 5:30Speaker 8: to Cleveland, I think the change of scenery has helped
- 5:33Speaker 8: him kind of recapture a little bit of what he had,
- 5:37Speaker 8: and he's been a very, very positive player for this
- 5:40Speaker 8: team that they don't need to rely on his, quote,
- 5:44Speaker 8: poor defensive metrics that he has, even though he steals
- 5:47Speaker 8: what four or five home runs a year. And then
- 5:49Speaker 8: obviously I have the white socks at the end. I
- 5:51Speaker 8: think they're probably, they're going to win. They're going to
- 5:54Speaker 8: get that by in the first round. And I, I
- 5:57Speaker 8: just don't believe in them to push them any closer
- 6:01Speaker 8: or any higher up in the, in the top 10 rankings.
- 6:06Speaker 1: Can I ask a question to you guys? So in
- 6:10Speaker 1: the playoffs these days we have, three division winners, three
- 6:16Speaker 1: wild cards, six per side, right? So 12 teams make
- 6:20Speaker 1: the playoffs. And when we're this late in the season
- 6:23Speaker 1: and we know who the playoff teams are, you're going
- 6:25Speaker 1: to include the teams that are either in or very
- 6:27Speaker 1: close to being in, right? Like the most borderline I
- 6:29Speaker 1: think that was included on both your lists was probably
- 6:32Speaker 1: the Guardians, right? In terms of, hey, there's a chance
- 6:35Speaker 1: that we get to the end of the season and
- 6:37Speaker 1: they're not in, right? So there's 12 teams. 10 of
- 6:43Speaker 1: them are going to make the power rankings for you.
- 6:46Speaker 1: For example, on the other side, Kratz, did you have
- 6:48Speaker 1: any consideration for the Diamondbacks, the Padres? I know you're
- 6:54Speaker 1: talking about how you're thinking through things here, but if
- 6:56Speaker 1: the National League is so much better than the American League,
- 6:59Speaker 1: then why wouldn't you include all of the potential playoff
- 7:03Speaker 1: teams in the NL? We're really only talking about... And
- 7:07Speaker 1: I get it. You still probably would have had to
- 7:08Speaker 1: make a call, right? Let's say if... I mean, you
- 7:10Speaker 1: don't even have the Guardians on. You have the Guardians 10.
- 7:11Speaker 1: You have the Guardians ahead of the White Sox, which
- 7:13Speaker 1: is fine. That's your power rankings. That's your right. But
- 7:17Speaker 1: to not have, say, the Padres or the Diamondbacks when
- 7:20Speaker 1: one of them will likely make the playoffs is definitely
- 7:22Speaker 1: going to bother some people.
- 7:25Speaker 8: And I'm not going to discount that. I definitely thought
- 7:30Speaker 8: about it. I don't think either of those teams are
- 7:32Speaker 8: better than the Red Sox. I don't think... They are
- 7:37Speaker 8: as competitive as the Guardians are because of that pitching
- 7:41Speaker 8: and defense. I think there's too many flaws. I really
- 7:45Speaker 8: thought about the Padres. I know currently as we stand,
- 7:48Speaker 8: the Padres are a half game out behind the Diamondbacks,
- 7:51Speaker 8: but they're going to flip-flop for the rest of the season.
- 7:54Speaker 8: I thought about the Padres, and I would have said, okay,
- 7:58Speaker 8: no Guardians. I would have pushed the White Sox to
- 8:01Speaker 8: nine and put the Padres at ten. But I think
- 8:04Speaker 8: the Guardians are better than the White Sox. I know
- 8:07Speaker 8: I'm probably going to get ripped on that. The Guardians
- 8:09Speaker 8: may not even make the playoffs. When I watch those
- 8:12Speaker 8: two teams play, my opinion right now and the trajectory
- 8:17Speaker 8: that they're going, I feel like the Guardians are a
- 8:19Speaker 8: better team than the White Sox. I know what the
- 8:22Speaker 8: records are, and I know the White Sox could cruise
- 8:25Speaker 8: to that– You get the off week with missing the
- 8:29Speaker 8: wild card, but I just couldn't put that in there
- 8:34Speaker 8: without saying the Guardians, in my opinion, look like a
- 8:37Speaker 8: better team.
- 8:40Speaker 7: Also, for me, two things. I don't see the Diamondbacks
- 8:44Speaker 7: getting in. One, in the playoffs, I don't see that.
- 8:47Speaker 7: And two, it's the rankings right now. And I think,
- 8:51Speaker 7: you know, if people are looking at this, they need
- 8:53Speaker 7: to understand the rankings now. There's still 22 games left.
- 8:56Speaker 7: But we're going off these power rankings as of now. Yeah,
- 9:00Speaker 7: this is what we have. And again, I'll repeat, I
- 9:03Speaker 7: just don't see the Diamondbacks getting into the playoffs.
- 9:08Speaker 2: That's your team, Scotty. I know.
- 9:10Speaker 5: I know.
- 9:10Speaker 1: No, I mean, I'm just asking the questions. But, I mean,
- 9:13Speaker 1: you didn't have the Padres in here. What did they
- 9:16Speaker 1: do to you?
- 9:17Speaker 2: And it's not because I don't like them.
- 9:21Speaker 3: What?
- 9:22Speaker 2: You texted me.
- 9:23Speaker 1: You don't love them enough. I mean– You guys, I
- 9:26Speaker 1: think we all agree that the American League is not
- 9:30Speaker 1: great this year. I think we can all agree on that, right?
- 9:33Speaker 3: Yes.
- 9:34Speaker 1: Yeah, it's a bad, bad American League this year compared
- 9:37Speaker 1: to most years. So then if I'm looking, just trying
- 9:41Speaker 1: to be a neutral party here, I'm like, well, how
- 9:44Speaker 1: come you're leaving out a playoff team or two in
- 9:47Speaker 1: the National League?
- 9:50Speaker 8: This is the heaviest American League power rankings I think
- 9:54Speaker 8: I've done. I would agree with you. And I'm not sure.
- 9:57Speaker 8: I don't know if I'm going Kevin Pillar style here where.
- 10:00Speaker 8: I have a little more recency bias. I just feel
- 10:04Speaker 8: like I feel like those two teams. I feel like
- 10:07Speaker 8: I had to have the White Sox in, but I
- 10:09Speaker 8: also had the feeling that the Guardians were better. And
- 10:14Speaker 8: so that's where I pushed out the Padres, who I
- 10:17Speaker 8: think will get that third wild card spot. and be
- 10:20Speaker 8: an absolute, I mean, it could be devastating. It could
- 10:23Speaker 8: be a menace to whoever they have to go up
- 10:26Speaker 8: against because of how good that bullpen is.
- 10:29Speaker 1: So basically you're telling me you had the Padres 11
- 10:31Speaker 1: if you could extend this. Is that fair?
- 10:34Speaker 8: Yes. I would honestly would have loved to, and this
- 10:36Speaker 8: is what I thought of sending to Claude, and she
- 10:38Speaker 8: would have given me the knife emoji. I would have
- 10:41Speaker 8: loved to have gone 9A and 9B and then Padres.
- 10:50Speaker 8: And it would have been Guardians and White Sox.
- 10:53Speaker 2: Can't do it.
- 10:55Speaker 4: No.
- 10:57Speaker 8: Can't do it.
- 10:58Speaker 5: Mr.
- 10:58Speaker 2: Drama. That's your name, Mr.
- 11:00Speaker 1: Drama.
- 11:01Speaker 2: Let's make more drama.
- 11:02Speaker 1: There's no A's and B's in power rankings. That's like
- 11:05Speaker 1: March Madness college hoops when a team's like, oh, it's
- 11:08Speaker 1: so unfair. It's like, yo, how many teams are in
- 11:10Speaker 1: it nowadays in March Madness? What's the number at?
- 11:14Speaker 8: 68.
- 11:15Speaker 5: 68?
- 11:15Speaker 1: Hey, you didn't make the top 68? You're not in
- 11:19Speaker 1: the playoffs. Sorry guys.
- 11:20Speaker 8: Enjoy the NIT. Okay. Enjoy the NIT of my power rankings.
- 11:25Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 11:25Speaker 1: You can get ripped off at the team above you
- 11:27Speaker 1: made it and you feel like you didn't, but the
- 11:29Speaker 1: complaint ultimately has to come down to, it's not like
- 11:32Speaker 1: we're deciding the old BCS when there'd be like four
- 11:35Speaker 1: undefeated teams and you're just playing random games in football.
- 11:38Speaker 1: Like this is, you know, like random mind games to
- 11:41Speaker 1: figure out who actually deserves it.
- 11:42Speaker 3: But Yeah.
- 11:44Speaker 1: Top tens, top tens. So good stuff. Just challenging you guys,
- 11:47Speaker 1: just having a little fun, just making sure the pop
- 11:48Speaker 1: quiz is playing. And then also it's not just for
- 11:52Speaker 1: who's on the show. We definitely have to give a
- 11:54Speaker 1: little bit of a jab to our buddy, Kevin Pillar
- 11:57Speaker 1: for last time he was on.
- 11:59Speaker 9: I'm actually going to remove the Yankees from the list
- 12:01Speaker 9: and I'm going to put the Blue Jays at number
- 12:04Speaker 9: 10 because of the recent news of some of the
- 12:07Speaker 9: injuries to the Yankees. And I do think they're a
- 12:10Speaker 9: top 10 team, but I'm going to move them out
- 12:11Speaker 9: of five and I'm going to put them towards the
- 12:13Speaker 9: bottom of that list right now yankees are off yankees
- 12:18Speaker 9: are off yankees are off.
- 12:22Speaker 1: See this is what i do i don't even participate
- 12:24Speaker 1: anymore i just ask questions that i know my friends
- 12:28Speaker 1: in the comments are going to ask and next time
- 12:30Speaker 1: we have kp on we will make sure we do
- 12:32Speaker 1: another power rankings to make sure he makes up.
- 12:34Speaker 8: For You have to go back and look at it
- 12:36Speaker 8: because during that time, we got the news that Max
- 12:40Speaker 8: Freed was going on the IL with the same elbow
- 12:44Speaker 8: contusion thing that he's getting. And so KP's like, I
- 12:47Speaker 8: don't even know. I don't even know. They're out of
- 12:51Speaker 8: my top 10.
- 12:52Speaker 3: We're like, what?
- 12:54Speaker 8: What, KP?
- 12:56Speaker 2: Can't be mad at him.
- 12:58Speaker 1: It's an opinion show. You can say whatever you want
- 13:00Speaker 1: to say. You just have to deal with the consequences.
- 13:03Speaker 8: Do it with your chest.
- 13:05Speaker 1: Yeah, we've all said things on this show that have
- 13:07Speaker 1: spread around and received positives, and we've said things that
- 13:10Speaker 1: have spread around and received vitriol.
- 13:14Speaker 5: Yes, all of us.
- 13:18Speaker 3: Call me!
- 13:19Speaker 1: The most common we get is vitriol that eventually turns
- 13:23Speaker 1: into those fans disappearing and not coming back. Not saying
- 13:28Speaker 1: we're always right. Not saying you guys are always right.
- 13:30Speaker 1: Definitely we're wrong plenty, but there is a lot of like, oops,
- 13:32Speaker 1: I said this. And then a year later, it looked
- 13:35Speaker 1: like it was exactly true.
- 13:36Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 13:37Speaker 1: But we're not petty at all. Hey, just an update
- 13:40Speaker 1: because we did cover this story a few times when
- 13:43Speaker 1: there was heat to it, the Alec Boehm lawsuit with
- 13:46Speaker 1: his parents, which is just terrible to have to deal
- 13:48Speaker 1: with any kind of legal happenings with your fam. That
- 13:52Speaker 1: one's done.
- 13:53Speaker 2: They settled.
- 13:54Speaker 1: You don't get any details if they don't want to
- 13:56Speaker 1: share it. So I don't think we're going to get
- 13:58Speaker 1: any details, but we did get a lot of, I guess,
- 14:01Speaker 1: public word from the court case on what was going
- 14:03Speaker 1: on there and it was not pretty. So I feel
- 14:06Speaker 1: for Alec, you know, if what was thrown out there
- 14:09Speaker 1: had any truth to it, it sounded absolutely awful for
- 14:12Speaker 1: him to have to deal with during a season. And
- 14:14Speaker 1: it sounds like it can be behind him now. I mean, Kratz,
- 14:17Speaker 1: you know him a little bit. We've had some good
- 14:18Speaker 1: run-ins with him and conversations. And again, I don't, we
- 14:22Speaker 1: don't know everything. We're never going to because it wasn't released,
- 14:25Speaker 1: but And if there was even a semblance of truth
- 14:27Speaker 1: to some of the stuff that was coming out in
- 14:29Speaker 1: that case, I feel for a player having to deal
- 14:31Speaker 1: with that when, I mean, you're essentially suing your parents
- 14:34Speaker 1: for stealing money from you during the season. That's really tough.
- 14:38Speaker 8: It's so tough. And obviously we only played together for
- 14:41Speaker 8: a few weeks, but when you go to another country
- 14:44Speaker 8: like Japan and you're playing with teammates, like you get
- 14:47Speaker 8: closer because you Todd knows like there's not a lot
- 14:51Speaker 8: of English speaking around. So it's not like you're like
- 14:53Speaker 8: connecting in different ways at different places and you're distracted.
- 14:56Speaker 8: So I got to know him really well. He's a
- 14:57Speaker 8: great kid. He was right out of school early draft.
- 15:00Speaker 8: You know, he just drafted. But I've seen this before
- 15:04Speaker 8: with other of my teammates and guys like actually have.
- 15:08Speaker 8: catastrophic major injuries because there's a mental stress that becomes physical.
- 15:16Speaker 8: And for people to say, well, you've just got to
- 15:18Speaker 8: be able to play through it.
- 15:19Speaker 3: You're right.
- 15:20Speaker 8: He does have to play through it. But if you
- 15:22Speaker 8: say it didn't affect him, I would call you a
- 15:25Speaker 8: liar 10 times out of 10 because in some way
- 15:28Speaker 8: it affects you because mentally you have to be locked in.
- 15:31Speaker 8: And hopefully this being alleviated has kind of been the
- 15:35Speaker 8: time that he's been you don't six having more success
- 15:39Speaker 8: as the season goes on. And his numbers are going
- 15:42Speaker 8: to still be sneaky good going into his free agent year.
- 15:46Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 15:46Speaker 7: And I, you know, anything with family and issues now
- 15:51Speaker 7: that this, this right here, like what, what's the next
- 15:54Speaker 7: steps for him and his mom and dad? Like, is
- 15:57Speaker 7: this repairable? Is this something where, you know, good luck,
- 16:03Speaker 7: you know, bye, like, this is what you did to me.
- 16:05Speaker 7: I don't want to talk to you again. Like, I
- 16:07Speaker 7: don't know what that answer is, but ultimately it's not
- 16:11Speaker 7: a good one.
- 16:12Speaker 2: And it's pretty sad because you only get one mom
- 16:14Speaker 2: and dad.
- 16:15Speaker 7: And, you know, to hear all this kind of going on,
- 16:19Speaker 7: it does put a little stain on the relationship.
- 16:22Speaker 2: Hopefully it's repairable, but I'm not sure.
- 16:24Speaker 6: I'm along with Isaac Azut. We're here with Miami Marlins catcher,
- 16:28Speaker 6: Joe Mac. Joe, thank you for taking the time out
- 16:30Speaker 6: of your busy schedule. I know you guys are in
- 16:32Speaker 6: the middle of a playoff hunt. How's everything going?
- 16:34Speaker 5: It's going great. It's going good. Thanks for having me.
- 16:38Speaker 2: Of course.
- 16:39Speaker 6: I want to start with that. You guys, you know,
- 16:41Speaker 6: in the playoff hunt right now, two and a half
- 16:42Speaker 6: games out of that final wild card spot, just entering
- 16:45Speaker 6: this final month of the season. Just what's the feeling
- 16:48Speaker 6: like in the clubhouse right now? Does it feel like
- 16:49Speaker 6: you guys are in that playoff mindset chase, you know,
- 16:53Speaker 6: trying to hunt for one of those final wild card spots?
- 16:56Speaker 5: For sure.
- 16:57Speaker 4: You know, the past couple of games have been, you know,
- 16:59Speaker 4: coming down to the wire and we're really playing some
- 17:02Speaker 4: good baseball. And it feels like it's, you know, the
- 17:05Speaker 4: beginning of playoff baseball, you.
- 17:07Speaker 5: Know, clubhouse vibes are good, of course.
- 17:09Speaker 4: And, you know, everybody's going out there and trying, trying
- 17:13Speaker 4: to do our best, help the team win in whatever
- 17:14Speaker 4: way we can.
- 17:16Speaker 10: Joe, I want to go back just a little bit
- 17:18Speaker 10: and take us to the night. I believe it was
- 17:20Speaker 10: May 4th.
- 17:20Speaker 1: I'm correct.
- 17:21Speaker 10: Just take us to the night you were called up initially.
- 17:24Speaker 10: What did you, what do you remember the most about
- 17:26Speaker 10: that day? And who did you tell first about your
- 17:28Speaker 10: major league promotion?
- 17:30Speaker 4: I remember being pretty tired, but I remember calling my
- 17:35Speaker 4: mom and dad first and telling them that I wasn't
- 17:39Speaker 4: going to be going back to Jacksonville.
- 17:42Speaker 5: So I'm talking with them.
- 17:43Speaker 4: And, you know, remembering that moment brings up a lot
- 17:47Speaker 4: of good, good memories about that. So, yeah, I'm just
- 17:51Speaker 4: excited to be in the position that we're in now. And,
- 17:54Speaker 4: you know, all the things that, you know, the team's
- 17:55Speaker 4: done that, you know, we've all done to, be put
- 17:59Speaker 4: in this position.
- 17:59Speaker 5: So it's, it's very awesome.
- 18:03Speaker 6: Looking back at that day in May, when you debuted
- 18:05Speaker 6: against the Phillies up until now, you know, you guys
- 18:07Speaker 6: in Kauffman stadium, just where do you feel like you've
- 18:09Speaker 6: improved the most? Where do you still think you may
- 18:11Speaker 6: be need to improve, you.
- 18:13Speaker 1: Know, your game.
- 18:13Speaker 6: And obviously you're still a young player. You've got a
- 18:15Speaker 6: lot of time left in the league, but just throughout
- 18:17Speaker 6: this year, where do you think you've made the most strides?
- 18:20Speaker 4: I would say on both sides of the plate. First
- 18:23Speaker 4: one is blocking. I feel like I've been a good
- 18:26Speaker 4: blocker this year. Comparative, comparative to the last couple of years.
- 18:32Speaker 4: That is something that I took a lot of pride in,
- 18:35Speaker 4: took a lot of work in for the offseason and
- 18:37Speaker 4: made sure that this year I was going to be a.
- 18:40Speaker 5: Lot better of a blocker.
- 18:41Speaker 4: So for that aspect, I would say for the defense
- 18:46Speaker 4: and then for the offensive side, I would say kind
- 18:50Speaker 4: of understanding situations, understanding certain pitchers and You know, if
- 18:55Speaker 4: it's runners on second and third, one out, you know,
- 18:58Speaker 4: how are they going to attack me versus nobody on, nobody,
- 19:01Speaker 4: no out or vice versa, you know. So just kind
- 19:04Speaker 4: of understanding both of those aspects and, you know, just
- 19:07Speaker 4: improving on both of those.
- 19:09Speaker 10: Joe, you've had the opportunity to catch a pretty talented staff.
- 19:12Speaker 10: And I don't think it's a coincidence that, you know,
- 19:14Speaker 10: a lot of these guys are having some of the
- 19:15Speaker 10: best years of their career. Is there one pitcher on
- 19:17Speaker 10: the staff that you feel you've developed a really strong
- 19:20Speaker 10: connection with or a really good camaraderie with? And what
- 19:23Speaker 10: sort of makes that relationship work?
- 19:25Speaker 4: Um, yeah, I mean, a lot of the guys I
- 19:28Speaker 4: think I have a pretty good relationship with. And, you know,
- 19:31Speaker 4: I think one, one is probably is probably Gusto, Ryan Gusto.
- 19:38Speaker 4: We've definitely, like, worked together throughout last year as well.
- 19:43Speaker 4: And also at the beginning of this year, and then
- 19:45Speaker 4: throughout um my big league career so far this year
- 19:48Speaker 4: we've just gotten a lot closer um we've gotten we've
- 19:52Speaker 4: talked a lot about baseball a lot about what he
- 19:54Speaker 4: likes to do um and certain attack plans and things
- 19:58Speaker 4: that you know he's good at so um i would
- 20:00Speaker 4: i would say ryan gusto is for sure a good candidate.
- 20:04Speaker 10: You earlier in your minor league career you went through
- 20:06Speaker 10: some rough stretches um offensively i'm just curious what did
- 20:09Speaker 10: you learn during those rough stretches that you could sort
- 20:11Speaker 10: of maybe incorporate uh at the big league level as
- 20:14Speaker 10: well whenever you face adversity.
- 20:16Speaker 4: Yeah i mean you know i would say this kind
- 20:19Speaker 4: of sounds cliche a little bit but you know you're
- 20:21Speaker 4: only one swing away um i think that just remembering
- 20:25Speaker 4: that and having the confidence in that and knowing that
- 20:27Speaker 4: you're doing all the right work and you know you
- 20:30Speaker 4: might just be getting unlucky or whatever that is you
- 20:32Speaker 4: know Instead of it being, you know, a couple weeks or,
- 20:36Speaker 4: you know, a month, maybe, you know, how.
- 20:38Speaker 5: Can we shorten that? How can we make it only
- 20:40Speaker 5: a week?
- 20:41Speaker 4: Or how can we make it only a couple days
- 20:43Speaker 4: instead of it being a prolonged lull.
- 20:46Speaker 1: I guess?
- 20:47Speaker 6: I guess when you look back at that time in 23, when,
- 20:49Speaker 6: you know, you just finished a season in Beloit, didn't
- 20:51Speaker 6: go well for you, probably not what you wanted. Just
- 20:54Speaker 6: how tough was that for you? Did you ever think
- 20:55Speaker 6: you'd be in this position after that? And just, you know,
- 20:58Speaker 6: what was that offseason going into 24 like for you
- 21:01Speaker 6: in terms of, just making sure you found a way
- 21:03Speaker 6: to bounce back from what happened that previous year?
- 21:06Speaker 5: For sure. I mean, it's a great question.
- 21:08Speaker 4: I honestly, it was either going to be, you know,
- 21:12Speaker 4: being here or, you know, probably not playing baseball. Honestly,
- 21:16Speaker 4: it just, it was one of those times where, you know,
- 21:18Speaker 4: you're at your lowest of lows and you have so
- 21:21Speaker 4: many expectations and you don't do those things. And, you know,
- 21:26Speaker 4: it really is a, a, a knock in the head and,
- 21:29Speaker 4: it was a very big wake up call and, you know,
- 21:31Speaker 4: didn't want to have that happen again. So that 2023
- 21:36Speaker 4: to 2024 year in that off season was mostly like
- 21:40Speaker 4: making sure that I'm doing the right stuff for mom,
- 21:44Speaker 4: for myself, like to make myself the best hitter, catcher,
- 21:49Speaker 4: base runner, all of those things that I could possibly be.
- 21:53Speaker 6: Just talk about this recent stretch of games, obviously dropped
- 21:56Speaker 6: three out of four against the Nats, but You guys
- 21:59Speaker 6: come back and you get a huge win against the
- 22:00Speaker 6: Royals and puts you guys in a really good spot
- 22:03Speaker 6: in the wild card. Just what do you think went
- 22:04Speaker 6: wrong in that series against Washington and just how big
- 22:06Speaker 6: for you guys as a team was it to bounce
- 22:08Speaker 6: back against a Royals team that's been playing some really
- 22:10Speaker 6: good baseball recently?
- 22:13Speaker 5: For sure.
- 22:13Speaker 4: I mean, you know, knowing that we're in the playoff
- 22:15Speaker 4: run and we're in contention of, you know, really having
- 22:19Speaker 4: something special here, you know, just keeps us all locked in,
- 22:23Speaker 4: keeps us all together, keeps us all working hard and
- 22:26Speaker 4: going out there each day, you know, whether we want
- 22:28Speaker 4: or not to go out there that day and go
- 22:30Speaker 4: out there and try and win. So, you know, it's
- 22:34Speaker 4: continuing to get improved, continuing to go out there with,
- 22:38Speaker 4: you know, a winning mindset and continuing to go out
- 22:40Speaker 4: there knowing that, you know, we're close and we're right
- 22:43Speaker 4: there and.
- 22:44Speaker 5: You know, we have the team to do it. So
- 22:47Speaker 5: it's just going out there and doing it.
- 22:50Speaker 10: I want to talk a little bit really quick about
- 22:52Speaker 10: some ABS stuff because I remember your Major League debut.
- 22:54Speaker 10: I believe Kevin and I were both there. You were
- 22:56Speaker 10: a little bit tentative in wanting to challenge right away
- 22:58Speaker 10: in your first game, which is obviously understandable. I'm curious,
- 23:01Speaker 10: how much more comfortable are you with it now, now
- 23:04Speaker 10: that you're, I guess, somewhat seasoned in your rookie year?
- 23:08Speaker 5: For sure.
- 23:08Speaker 4: I mean, I was definitely nervous to rip it for
- 23:10Speaker 4: the first at least two or three games. You know,
- 23:15Speaker 4: I didn't really, I guess, want to. see myself tap
- 23:19Speaker 4: and it'd be a ball. So I was just kind
- 23:21Speaker 4: of a little nervous, but we've done a lot of
- 23:23Speaker 4: good work with the ABS system. We've done a lot
- 23:26Speaker 4: of training with that. When we go out to the field,
- 23:30Speaker 4: have a pitching machine on the mound and just throws
- 23:32Speaker 4: balls and strikes too. And we have to challenge if
- 23:36Speaker 4: we think it's a strike. And that also got my
- 23:38Speaker 4: confidence way up as well. And also like the differences
- 23:42Speaker 4: between moving up and back with certain hitters to get
- 23:45Speaker 4: closer to them. and get the bottom third of the
- 23:48Speaker 4: zone and having more confidence of where that zone actually is,
- 23:53Speaker 4: I think helped me a lot with being able to
- 23:57Speaker 4: just rip the challenges whenever.
- 23:59Speaker 10: I'm curious, has there been a situation where maybe your
- 24:02Speaker 10: pitcher wanted you to challenge? I know the pitchers generally don't,
- 24:05Speaker 10: but where he really wanted you to, but you were like, hey,
- 24:08Speaker 10: you know what, it's off, it's off.
- 24:09Speaker 1: Are there situations like that?
- 24:11Speaker 4: I can actually remember specifically, it was actually in Washington
- 24:15Speaker 4: the last time we were there. calvin fauchet was pitching
- 24:17Speaker 4: and like he was like yeah challenge challenge he threw
- 24:22Speaker 4: a single like up and in he was like challenge
- 24:23Speaker 4: he didn't actually tap his head so the guy looked
- 24:26Speaker 4: back and i was like all right i'll challenge whatever
- 24:28Speaker 4: i was like i didn't think it was a strike
- 24:30Speaker 4: and then i was well then the umpire said all
- 24:32Speaker 4: right pitchers challenging the call and it was a ball
- 24:35Speaker 4: i think and at that point on he was like
- 24:38Speaker 4: all right i'll leave it up to you.
- 24:41Speaker 10: I guess it gets a little bit tough for the
- 24:42Speaker 10: pitchers to figure that out. But also going back a
- 24:45Speaker 10: little bit, you were drafted in 2021, so you're sort
- 24:47Speaker 10: of pretty long-tenured here in the Marlins organization. I want
- 24:50Speaker 10: to see if there's any differences that you've noticed since
- 24:53Speaker 10: Peter Bendix joined the organization and took over the Baseball
- 24:56Speaker 10: Operations Department compared to when Kim Eng was running things.
- 24:59Speaker 10: Just any differences that you've seen organizationally or developmentally?
- 25:05Speaker 4: I mean, I would say one thing is we're very
- 25:07Speaker 4: keen on getting better, very keen on you know, working
- 25:12Speaker 4: on what the game's telling us for pitchers, you know,
- 25:16Speaker 4: if the pitch isn't working, switch the grips, try it
- 25:18Speaker 4: out in a PD or whatever it is and, you know,
- 25:21Speaker 4: see if they like it. You know, for, for me
- 25:25Speaker 4: as a hitter, as a catcher, you know, it's building
- 25:27Speaker 4: off my strengths and, you know, making sure those are
- 25:30Speaker 4: really good.
- 25:30Speaker 5: And then also working on the things that I need
- 25:33Speaker 5: improvement on.
- 25:33Speaker 4: So I would say like the development side behind it
- 25:36Speaker 4: has been very, very good.
- 25:43Speaker 6: Um joe obviously you're well known for your defense just
- 25:46Speaker 6: where did that come from for you who kind of
- 25:48Speaker 6: told you you know not even told you just like
- 25:50Speaker 6: the passion for it like just knowing like this is
- 25:52Speaker 6: what you know you want to be a defensive catcher
- 25:54Speaker 6: you're known as a defensive first catcher like where did
- 25:56Speaker 6: that come from just how how big has that been
- 25:59Speaker 6: for you you know just being able to develop that
- 26:01Speaker 6: behind the plate and because since you've gone here it's
- 26:03Speaker 6: it's been a huge huge help for this team.
- 26:05Speaker 4: For sure i mean throughout my minor league career i've
- 26:09Speaker 4: known that the defensive position is pretty difficult and it
- 26:13Speaker 4: takes a lot. And I've, I've seen it where some
- 26:17Speaker 4: catchers would just be in the big leagues or whatever
- 26:21Speaker 4: it is just purely because their defense. And, you know,
- 26:24Speaker 4: I've always thought to myself, you know, I can, I
- 26:26Speaker 4: can do that. And, you know, I want to be
- 26:28Speaker 4: the best defensive catcher that I can be so that,
- 26:31Speaker 4: you know, I can go out there and help the
- 26:33Speaker 4: team out on, you know, the defense side and then
- 26:36Speaker 4: let the offense side take over as well when it does. Um,
- 26:40Speaker 4: But I would say my coach, catching coach Chris Briones
- 26:43Speaker 4: in AA and also in high A as well, was really,
- 26:47Speaker 4: really good about telling me all that stuff and really,
- 26:50Speaker 4: really good about emphasizing, you know, how important defense is
- 26:54Speaker 4: and all the work that we put in and all the,
- 26:55Speaker 4: you know, drills that we've done and things that we've,
- 26:59Speaker 4: you know, talked about to figure out, you know, how
- 27:01Speaker 4: am I going to be my best self when I
- 27:02Speaker 4: go out there? So I would say that he definitely
- 27:05Speaker 4: helped me out a ton with that.
- 27:07Speaker 2: Okay.
- 27:09Speaker 10: I'm curious, Joe, what was your honest initial reaction when
- 27:12Speaker 10: you were in the minors that the Marlins were sort
- 27:14Speaker 10: of turning towards the direction of not calling pitches or
- 27:17Speaker 10: calling pitches from the dugout rather than letting their catchers
- 27:19Speaker 10: do it?
- 27:20Speaker 5: Sure.
- 27:21Speaker 4: I mean, yeah, at first it was definitely a little weird,
- 27:23Speaker 4: a little odd. Obviously, it's not really normal. It wasn't even.
- 27:28Speaker 5: A thought, I guess, in the game.
- 27:30Speaker 4: And so when I started getting pitches called for me
- 27:36Speaker 4: and all that stuff.
- 27:37Speaker 5: It was a little like, I was kind of.
- 27:38Speaker 4: Fighting it, but more and more that I worked with
- 27:41Speaker 4: it and more that I allowed that to like be
- 27:44Speaker 4: a part of it and be how it is, you know,
- 27:46Speaker 4: the more it was actually like, Oh wow, wait, this
- 27:48Speaker 4: is a lot better. I have a lot less stress
- 27:51Speaker 4: that I have to worry about during the game. You know, my,
- 27:54Speaker 4: my mental side where it's like, I got to think
- 27:56Speaker 4: about each individual pitch.
- 27:58Speaker 5: I know I can do that, but it also.
- 28:01Speaker 4: Saves me things that I need to do in order to,
- 28:05Speaker 4: throw out a guy, block a pitch, frame a pitch,
- 28:08Speaker 4: whatever that might be. So I continue to say it. And,
- 28:12Speaker 4: you know, it's how it is, and it's part of
- 28:15Speaker 4: our organization. And, you know, I've learned to love it
- 28:18Speaker 4: over the years.
- 28:20Speaker 1: Last one before I let Kevin wrap it up.
- 28:22Speaker 10: Your favorite catcher growing up defensively to watch as a fan?
- 28:26Speaker 4: I mean, it was like I had two. It was
- 28:30Speaker 4: Buster Posey and Yadier Molina.
- 28:32Speaker 3: Okay, of course.
- 28:34Speaker 1: Perfect.
- 28:35Speaker 6: Can't go, can't go wrong with us. So Joe, thank
- 28:37Speaker 6: you so much. We're going to wrap it up here.
- 28:38Speaker 6: I know you got to get ready for a big
- 28:40Speaker 6: game in Kansas city. So from Isaac, myself, we'll see
- 28:43Speaker 6: you guys on the next one. As always, peace out
- 28:45Speaker 6: and go fish.
- 28:58Speaker 2: Let's talk.
- 28:59Speaker 1: Bravo is one of their new additions. Brent Suter joining
- 29:02Speaker 1: us right now. Suter B good to see you, man.
- 29:04Speaker 1: How's life with the Atlanta Braves, dude? Are you liking it?
- 29:09Speaker 3: Thanks for having me, guys. And, yeah, I sure am.
- 29:10Speaker 3: This is amazing.
- 29:12Speaker 11: I feel like I won the trade lottery here because
- 29:14Speaker 11: it's been great. And everyone is super welcoming and winning
- 29:19Speaker 11: culture like crazy. So we are in a good spot.
- 29:22Speaker 11: And we got a big series here this weekend coming
- 29:24Speaker 11: up in Philly. But we're all excited for it.
- 29:27Speaker 8: So, like, I was checking my phone because, like, you're
- 29:31Speaker 8: like 45 minutes from my house and you didn't even
- 29:33Speaker 8: once be like, Hey, Eric, I like to eat breakfast.
- 29:37Speaker 8: Would you like to eat breakfast with me sometime?
- 29:40Speaker 11: I snuck home yesterday for the off day. So I wasn't,
- 29:42Speaker 11: I wasn't here, but let's get something this weekend.
- 29:46Speaker 8: I love scrambled eggs. So that'll be perfect.
- 29:49Speaker 3: I'm in, I'm in there.
- 29:51Speaker 8: What you said about it, like you're so blessed to
- 29:54Speaker 8: be over it or exact words that you use to
- 29:56Speaker 8: be in the place where you're at. How refreshing is
- 29:59Speaker 8: it to go to a team that is not just
- 30:02Speaker 8: in it, but looking to do even more in the
- 30:05Speaker 8: Braves after you, you know, battled and fought with the
- 30:08Speaker 8: Angels earlier?
- 30:10Speaker 11: Yeah, I mean, it feels like a new lease on life.
- 30:12Speaker 3: You know, I love the Angels. I loved everything about it.
- 30:15Speaker 3: People were great.
- 30:15Speaker 11: Fans were great. It's a great place to live. My family,
- 30:18Speaker 11: we had a blast out there, but you play to
- 30:21Speaker 11: try to win a ring, right? And we were kind
- 30:23Speaker 11: of out of it a while ago with the Angels,
- 30:26Speaker 11: and come here and like you said, a chance to
- 30:28Speaker 11: do some serious damage in the post season, but we
- 30:30Speaker 11: all play for it. It's just a great opportunity. But
- 30:34Speaker 11: the fact that I didn't think I was getting traded,
- 30:35Speaker 11: the fact that they traded for me and brought me
- 30:38Speaker 11: in here is I just feel like the lucky, I
- 30:40Speaker 11: feel like a kid at the candy store, man.
- 30:42Speaker 3: It's, it's amazing.
- 30:43Speaker 11: I grew up in Atlanta for four years in the
- 30:45Speaker 11: nineties when they had the Mattis, Clavin, Smoltz, the Joneses, just,
- 30:49Speaker 11: I fell in love with baseball being a Braves fan
- 30:51Speaker 11: at that time. So yeah, it's really the full circle
- 30:53Speaker 11: moment for me being, being here wearing the a it's, it's,
- 30:57Speaker 11: it's awesome.
- 30:59Speaker 7: Good buddy of mine, Eduardo Perez. He brought up when
- 31:02Speaker 7: you guys came to the little league world series, that
- 31:05Speaker 7: the Braves just got their little league reset, meaning all
- 31:08Speaker 7: of a sudden it brought you back to where you were.
- 31:10Speaker 7: And then when you used to play, how much fun
- 31:12Speaker 7: you had and you guys kind of took off a
- 31:14Speaker 7: little bit, talk a little bit about your experience in Williamsport.
- 31:17Speaker 7: When I saw you, you were smiling from ear to ear,
- 31:19Speaker 7: like I do every time. And, Do you believe in
- 31:22Speaker 7: that Little League reset or what?
- 31:24Speaker 3: I'm in on it. I think there's something to it.
- 31:27Speaker 11: I think the Brewers have been playing well since then too,
- 31:29Speaker 11: so it's definitely real. But I think for me it
- 31:33Speaker 11: was re-falling in love with the game again or just
- 31:35Speaker 11: reaffirming your love of the game, seeing all these kids
- 31:38Speaker 11: and they're just playing ball with their friends, having a blast,
- 31:42Speaker 11: and you just see the love of the game ever-present
- 31:45Speaker 11: throughout that whole day. And me and Brewer even– slid
- 31:49Speaker 11: down the mudslide, the hill a little bit. We had
- 31:52Speaker 11: a little topsy-turvy accident there, but we were all good.
- 31:54Speaker 11: But it was certainly a lot of fun. And, I mean,
- 31:59Speaker 11: the venue too, the park we played in was really awesome.
- 32:02Speaker 11: And it was a really fun time. We won a
- 32:06Speaker 11: really good game. And, yeah, I wouldn't trade it for anything.
- 32:09Speaker 11: That was one of the coolest days of my big
- 32:11Speaker 11: league career.
- 32:11Speaker 3: All right.
- 32:13Speaker 8: Well, talk about that trade time. Talk about the trade because–
- 32:17Speaker 8: You were going to Todd's neck of the woods at
- 32:20Speaker 8: Trout National. Had you teed off, and what can you
- 32:26Speaker 8: tell us about the story, your reaction, and did you
- 32:29Speaker 8: guys finish the entire round?
- 32:32Speaker 11: It was a crazy day. We bused from Baltimore to
- 32:36Speaker 11: Trout's house that night. So we flew into Baltimore the
- 32:38Speaker 11: night before, bused to Trout's house. We all stayed there.
- 32:41Speaker 11: We got up in the morning, had a little weather
- 32:43Speaker 11: delay with the rain, but we were able to almost
- 32:46Speaker 11: tee off when i got the call so i was
- 32:48Speaker 11: on the putting green trying to sink some putts when
- 32:50Speaker 11: i got the call from the angels assistant gm saw
- 32:53Speaker 11: the number i go whoa i think i got traded
- 32:55Speaker 11: i wasn't expecting like i said but uh he said
- 32:57Speaker 11: hey man brent thanks for everything we're here we're gonna
- 33:00Speaker 11: trade you to the braves and i was like sick
- 33:02Speaker 11: you know i mean that's that's great news question for
- 33:05Speaker 11: you i'm about to tee off on trump's golf course
- 33:07Speaker 11: here uh can i finish the round can i play
- 33:10Speaker 11: what we got here and they're like oh the braves
- 33:12Speaker 11: are off you'll probably be able to get a later flight.
- 33:14Speaker 11: So just, uh, just hang tight. The Braves travel secretary
- 33:17Speaker 11: will get in touch with you. And yeah, so Mike
- 33:19Speaker 11: Shaw got in touch with me and I was able
- 33:21Speaker 11: to get the last flight out of Philly actually right
- 33:22Speaker 11: here about a month ago, um, off the trout score.
- 33:25Speaker 3: So I was able to play 15 of the holes.
- 33:27Speaker 11: There was another thunderstorm delay, uh, during which Ryan Zephyr, John,
- 33:32Speaker 11: my golfing partner got traded.
- 33:33Speaker 3: So, uh, to the Cubs.
- 33:35Speaker 11: So it was just a wild day. I think four
- 33:37Speaker 11: of us in the golf rounds got picked out, you know,
- 33:39Speaker 11: we got traded that day. Me, Joe Adele, Zephyr, John
- 33:42Speaker 11: and Kirby Yates. So, It was just a wild day,
- 33:45Speaker 11: unlike anything I've ever experienced. But it was a great
- 33:49Speaker 11: time to, like, spend the last couple hours with those
- 33:51Speaker 11: guys and enjoy, you know, hanging out with them, playing
- 33:54Speaker 11: golf at Trout's Unreal Course. And, like, just the amenities
- 33:57Speaker 11: there are amazing. So I highly recommend it to anyone who.
- 33:59Speaker 3: Can play it. But it was amazing and just a
- 34:03Speaker 3: really cool way to say goodbye.
- 34:05Speaker 8: Wait, Mike Shaw is the traveling guy for the Braves now?
- 34:09Speaker 3: Yeah, he used to be with the Blue Jays, yeah.
- 34:11Speaker 8: That's tremendous. That's tremendous. But did you ride the bus
- 34:18Speaker 8: back with the team? And was that awkward? Because you're like, bro,
- 34:21Speaker 8: I'm not even one of your teammates anymore. So don't
- 34:24Speaker 8: even talk to me.
- 34:26Speaker 11: We took cars from the golf course back to Mike's house.
- 34:29Speaker 11: And from there, a car picked me up to take
- 34:31Speaker 11: me to the Philly airport. So it was all love, man.
- 34:34Speaker 11: The guys were great. Like I said, I loved every
- 34:36Speaker 11: one of those guys with the Angels. And I wish
- 34:39Speaker 11: it would have gone better for us in between the lines.
- 34:40Speaker 11: But It was just everyone was so cool about it.
- 34:43Speaker 11: We we enjoyed those last couple hours together and hope
- 34:47Speaker 11: to see all those guys again soon. But it was
- 34:49Speaker 11: it was just a crazy, crazy, awesome, but busy day
- 34:54Speaker 11: and a lot of a lot of stuff going on.
- 34:56Speaker 3: And I wouldn't trade it for anything. No pun intended.
- 34:59Speaker 2: All right.
- 35:02Speaker 8: So now that you hear the news that Artie Moreno sold.
- 35:06Speaker 8: As a player, how much do you see that, know that?
- 35:10Speaker 8: But then also, you're high up, you're executive. I'm not
- 35:14Speaker 8: exactly sure what your title is with the Players Association.
- 35:18Speaker 8: But when you hear that news, what kind of ramifications
- 35:23Speaker 8: or what's your feeling when you hear about Artie Moreno
- 35:26Speaker 8: selling the team?
- 35:29Speaker 11: Yeah, I think overall it's a good thing for the Angels.
- 35:33Speaker 11: I was definitely... interested in that news. Uh, I knew
- 35:38Speaker 11: already a little bit in spring, but, um, didn't get
- 35:41Speaker 11: to interact with him too much, but I just know
- 35:43Speaker 11: that the group who bought him, the Cronky group has
- 35:46Speaker 11: a really good history of doing great things with organizations.
- 35:49Speaker 11: So really happy for the angels and their fans and,
- 35:52Speaker 11: and the players for, uh, you know, that, that kind
- 35:54Speaker 11: of ownership group coming in for sure. And yeah, it was, uh,
- 35:58Speaker 11: it was crazy news.
- 35:59Speaker 3: Everyone was talking about it for sure.
- 36:00Speaker 11: It's, it's big time news and, uh, price tag was,
- 36:03Speaker 11: seems like it's really good for baseball too. So, We'll, uh,
- 36:06Speaker 11: we'll take that. I'm, I am executive subcommittee with the union.
- 36:09Speaker 11: So we definitely are, um, good to, you know, it's good,
- 36:12Speaker 11: good to see that franchise valuations are high and that
- 36:15Speaker 11: the game is moving in a good direction financially.
- 36:17Speaker 3: So that was good. But, uh, yeah, it was, it
- 36:20Speaker 3: was crazy.
- 36:21Speaker 11: I was just talking about the angels with a couple
- 36:24Speaker 11: of guys with the Braves and then we popped up
- 36:26Speaker 11: on the screen that they sold. We're like, Whoa, crazy, crazy.
- 36:30Speaker 3: So, um, good for them. Now I'm, uh, I'm happy
- 36:33Speaker 3: for the angels.
- 36:34Speaker 8: Talking about the financial part of it, the CBA obviously
- 36:37Speaker 8: coming up, you're a dude in this. You're a guy
- 36:40Speaker 8: that's at the table. You're very intelligent, but you're not
- 36:43Speaker 8: a star. And my argument has always been stars are
- 36:47Speaker 8: the ones that get paid, and I think the owners
- 36:50Speaker 8: are trying to pit the stars against the Brent suitors.
- 36:54Speaker 8: The Brent suitors have the opportunity to sign one-year deals
- 36:58Speaker 8: and kind of accumulate money as you play, and it's
- 37:01Speaker 8: a great career, but... Do you feel like the union
- 37:07Speaker 8: is doing you, your type of player, enough of a
- 37:11Speaker 8: service in this next CBA? And is that one of
- 37:15Speaker 8: the hinge points for these negotiations?
- 37:19Speaker 3: Yeah, I do.
- 37:20Speaker 11: I think one of the big drawbacks of any cap
- 37:23Speaker 11: system is that it squeezes out the middleman. So I
- 37:26Speaker 11: would be squeezed right out of there because why would
- 37:28Speaker 11: they spend a little bit extra money on me and
- 37:30Speaker 11: take away from their superstars or when they can just
- 37:32Speaker 11: replace me? with a younger guy and just kind of rifle,
- 37:36Speaker 11: you know, shuffle the roster around during, throughout the season.
- 37:40Speaker 11: So I think the cap would squeeze the middleman out.
- 37:44Speaker 11: And I, I really, I think that the.
- 37:47Speaker 3: Union, obviously we don't do, do not want the cap.
- 37:51Speaker 11: And that was a, is a big time reason for
- 37:54Speaker 11: it among many, many other reasons. But I think for
- 37:57Speaker 11: me being a guy, like you said, is I'm revolving on,
- 38:02Speaker 11: you know, rotating one-year deals, trying to get to 10-year
- 38:06Speaker 11: service time, trying to get, you know, all these things
- 38:09Speaker 11: taken care of, just pitch by pitch, day by day.
- 38:11Speaker 11: I call it survive and advance kind of career, but
- 38:13Speaker 11: it is what it is. And I think for me,
- 38:15Speaker 11: the cap system, I don't think I'd be playing still.
- 38:18Speaker 11: If I'm being honest, I don't know. But it's been
- 38:24Speaker 11: a blessing.
- 38:24Speaker 3: To be a part of the union. I'll tell you that.
- 38:26Speaker 3: The honor of being able.
- 38:27Speaker 11: To represent the player group and the people and and
- 38:30Speaker 11: people have come into contact with the union staff, the
- 38:33Speaker 11: kind of the solidarity you get being a, being a
- 38:36Speaker 11: member of the union is, is amazing. So very, very
- 38:39Speaker 11: grateful for the union and everything it stands for.
- 38:41Speaker 2: No doubt. No doubt. I love that. And I think
- 38:44Speaker 2: you hit that perfectly. Union has been fantastic.
- 38:47Speaker 7: My question for you is, you know, regarding all this too,
- 38:51Speaker 7: like we understand that, you know, at the end of
- 38:54Speaker 7: the year, what is it?
- 38:55Speaker 2: December 5th. Is that when?
- 38:57Speaker 3: December 1st.
- 38:58Speaker 1: First. Okay.
- 39:00Speaker 7: That's when basically you got to figure it out or not.
- 39:02Speaker 7: And it most likely not going to get figured out
- 39:04Speaker 7: by them. But has there been talks of like, for me,
- 39:07Speaker 7: like the only thing that drives me crazy is why
- 39:10Speaker 7: haven't like every week or every like 10 days, there's
- 39:12Speaker 7: been conversations. Has there been meetings going on? Has there
- 39:15Speaker 7: been conversations or lack of like, I think that's, that's
- 39:18Speaker 7: the problem that probably drives fans crazy too. Like why
- 39:21Speaker 7: isn't there, you know, the union and MLB coming together,
- 39:25Speaker 7: at least trying to get this done. Like now is there,
- 39:27Speaker 7: is there a reasoning behind that?
- 39:29Speaker 11: I dare have, conversations there have been uh basically every
- 39:32Speaker 11: week there's been talks and meetings um cva you know
- 39:35Speaker 11: with the other side and so we have been have
- 39:37Speaker 11: been communicating i think this week's was you know every
- 39:40Speaker 11: now and then it gets moved a couple days or
- 39:42Speaker 11: whatever but there yeah we have been in talks and
- 39:44Speaker 11: some of them have been publicized you know we've kind
- 39:47Speaker 11: of laying out some things for the media. Both sides
- 39:50Speaker 11: have been kind of laying out their sides on some
- 39:53Speaker 11: of the meetings, but not all the meetings are getting
- 39:56Speaker 11: publicized like that. It's, it's more or less the, we're
- 39:59Speaker 11: trying to lay out as many proposals and both sides
- 40:02Speaker 11: are trying to lay out as many kind of for
- 40:05Speaker 11: every issue where we stand, what we'll accept, what we won't.
- 40:08Speaker 11: So there's definitely stuff getting done, but yeah, like I
- 40:11Speaker 11: would always like to see more. I mean, I want to,
- 40:13Speaker 11: I want to have my phone, And my Zoom calls
- 40:16Speaker 11: getting blown up by meetings because we're meeting so much.
- 40:19Speaker 11: So hopefully that starts turning up a little bit. But
- 40:22Speaker 11: there have been definitely calls either once a week or
- 40:26Speaker 11: twice a week.
- 40:27Speaker 3: For a while now.
- 40:29Speaker 1: Brent, back to a Braves question for you. I've wanted
- 40:32Speaker 1: to ask this to one of the acquisitions on the Braves.
- 40:35Speaker 1: So you're the guy, okay? So you know how the
- 40:37Speaker 1: deal is when the trade deadline goes down, grades are
- 40:40Speaker 1: given out, fans look at expectations, all of that, right?
- 40:43Speaker 1: I don't think it's a secret. Some fans are like, oh,
- 40:45Speaker 1: I wanted Scooble or some other big name starter or
- 40:48Speaker 1: whatever it is. I mean, I would say no fan
- 40:50Speaker 1: base should feel like they got enough at the trade
- 40:52Speaker 1: deadline if you're demanding of your team and you want
- 40:54Speaker 1: them to win. So my question is. For trade acquisitions,
- 40:57Speaker 1: how much do they pay attention to that chatter? Tyler
- 41:00Speaker 1: Molle is absolutely shoving right now. And some fans are like, cool,
- 41:04Speaker 1: I wanted Molle, but I wanted something else. And Molle's like, no,
- 41:06Speaker 1: you wanted me right now.
- 41:07Speaker 3: I look like a playoff starter.
- 41:09Speaker 1: So I'm like, how much does the locker room, the clubhouse,
- 41:12Speaker 1: and the new acquisitions see that? I know you're not
- 41:15Speaker 1: like dialed into every show and all that, but I'm
- 41:17Speaker 1: sure you at least know like, hey, some fans and
- 41:19Speaker 1: the media are critical of what the Braves did. And
- 41:20Speaker 1: you're like, screw that.
- 41:22Speaker 3: We look good.
- 41:24Speaker 8: Right, right.
- 41:24Speaker 11: That was a great question. Um, certainly, you know, get
- 41:27Speaker 11: some extra chips on the shoulder. Never hurts, I guess. But, uh,
- 41:31Speaker 11: I could, I think I could speak for the other
- 41:32Speaker 11: trade guys throughout the league. Like you just want to,
- 41:34Speaker 11: you want to show up and you want to help
- 41:36Speaker 11: the team win. Like you want to do your job,
- 41:38Speaker 11: help the team win. Uh, there's going to be some
- 41:40Speaker 11: highs and lows, but in general, you just want to,
- 41:43Speaker 11: you want to help the new, your new team, your
- 41:45Speaker 11: new brothers, uh, go out there and compete as, as
- 41:49Speaker 11: best you can. So, uh, the fan chatter, maybe I
- 41:52Speaker 11: don't really, honestly, I'm pretty unplugged from it at this point. Um,
- 41:56Speaker 11: you know, the good and the bad, I just kind of,
- 41:58Speaker 11: at this point, I'm just trying to go out there
- 42:00Speaker 11: and be a professional and do my job and try
- 42:03Speaker 11: to be as good of a teammate as I can. But, um,
- 42:06Speaker 11: I'm sure some guys feed off it a little bit. Like,
- 42:08Speaker 11: you know, they didn't think they get enough from me here.
- 42:09Speaker 11: I am kind of thing, or they didn't think they
- 42:12Speaker 11: got enough, but, uh, certainly that's not really my mindset.
- 42:15Speaker 11: My mindset is just like, let me show up and
- 42:17Speaker 11: do my job and help the Braves hopefully win a
- 42:20Speaker 11: world series.
- 42:21Speaker 8: Suter B two minutes of quick, quick hitter questions.
- 42:24Speaker 3: You ready? I'm ready. Okay.
- 42:28Speaker 8: What hitter do you fear the most when they're in
- 42:30Speaker 8: the box?
- 42:33Speaker 3: Numbers-wise, it probably should be Nolan Arnauto.
- 42:35Speaker 11: He hit another tank off me a couple weeks ago.
- 42:38Speaker 11: It's been bloody. It's been bloody. I think his OPS
- 42:40Speaker 11: is over 2,000 and a pretty significant sample size. So, yeah,
- 42:45Speaker 11: you know, I was doing okay with him the last
- 42:48Speaker 11: couple years, and then he took me deep.
- 42:50Speaker 3: So, yeah, he's back right there at number one.
- 42:54Speaker 8: All right. Well, that one I threw in there. Now
- 42:55Speaker 8: we have some real, we have some real, because I
- 42:58Speaker 8: knew that's who, I assumed that's who it was because
- 43:01Speaker 8: he's hit a few hard. That's totally fine. It's totally fine.
- 43:04Speaker 8: I've seen the numbers. It's bloody. But besides you, who
- 43:09Speaker 8: was your family's favorite player in Major League Baseball?
- 43:13Speaker 11: My kids really change based on what team I am.
- 43:16Speaker 11: So they were just big Mike Trout guys. Now they
- 43:19Speaker 11: are huge Ronald Acuna and Matt Olsen fans. When Cincinnati,
- 43:22Speaker 11: they were Elie de la Cruz and my middle was
- 43:26Speaker 11: a big Matt McClain guy, big Matt McClain guy. Like
- 43:29Speaker 11: he would get so starstruck when Matt McClain was even
- 43:32Speaker 11: like on my FaceTime, you know, when I was FaceTiming.
- 43:34Speaker 11: So he just couldn't, he couldn't speak and he can't
- 43:37Speaker 11: get that kid to stop speaking a lot of times.
- 43:38Speaker 11: So it just depends on what team I am. But
- 43:41Speaker 11: right now it's Ronald Acuna Jr.
- 43:42Speaker 3: And Matt Olsen.
- 43:44Speaker 8: Okay. Famous person that you'd want to have dinner with.
- 43:48Speaker 3: Oh, alive or like they have to be alive or anywhere. Anytime. Ever.
- 43:55Speaker 3: JC for sure. Number one, Jesus Christ.
- 43:57Speaker 11: But I think another one for sure is to come
- 44:01Speaker 11: to the Shawnee chief leader random, but just, I really
- 44:06Speaker 11: want to want to get to know him.
- 44:07Speaker 3: He seemed like an amazing dude.
- 44:10Speaker 8: All right. Last one. Favorite movie.
- 44:15Speaker 3: Favorite baseball movie is For Love of the Game, for sure.
- 44:18Speaker 11: I love that. I think the baseball scenes are amazing.
- 44:21Speaker 11: Favorite movie overall, maybe Gladiator. It's a great, great star.
- 44:26Speaker 11: Shawshank Redemption and Gladiator, like those redemption stories, I just,
- 44:30Speaker 11: you know, they definitely fire me up.
- 44:31Speaker 3: So either Shawshank Redemption or Gladiator.
- 44:34Speaker 8: Top fives. Top fives. You did it. You nailed it.
- 44:37Speaker 1: Wow, he's good. Those were like A-plus answers on every front.
- 44:42Speaker 1: And actually, I'm with you, dude. I really loved For
- 44:44Speaker 1: the Love of the Game. I loved what it represented.
- 44:47Speaker 1: I loved the baseball scenes, too. I'm with you, dude. Underrated.
- 44:49Speaker 3: Yeah. Underrated baseball. A little cheesy romantically, but it's a
- 44:53Speaker 3: great movie.
- 44:53Speaker 8: You are cheesy.
- 44:54Speaker 3: You are cheesy.
- 44:55Speaker 11: One third of movies are.
- 44:57Speaker 1: 100%.
- 44:57Speaker 3: It's right in my bread box. Right.
- 45:00Speaker 1: Kill me for liking a feel-good story with a little
- 45:03Speaker 1: love to it. Sorry about it.
- 45:04Speaker 3: Right? I like it. I'm there. Yeah. You're the man, dude.
- 45:08Speaker 1: Keep doing your thing. We really appreciate the time. Love
- 45:10Speaker 1: having you on.
- 45:11Speaker 3: You guys are the best. Thanks for having me.
