- 0:00Speaker 1: In the summer of twenty ten, on an otherwise quiet
- 0:03Speaker 1: and calm Sunday afternoon near Saint Petersburg, Florida, two men
- 0:07Speaker 1: placed frantic emergency calls for help. One calls placed by
- 0:10Speaker 1: a son, the other from his stepfather. Both men accused
- 0:16Speaker 1: the other of a murder, with a wife and mother
- 0:21Speaker 1: dead in her home and only her son and husband present.
- 0:25Speaker 1: One of them had to be lying, Hi everyone, I'm
- 0:31Speaker 1: Kevin and this is just Thought Lounge. We're the true
- 0:34Speaker 1: crime channel that delivers serious, well balanced coverage of the
- 0:37Speaker 1: cases that really make you think. Today we're examining the
- 0:41Speaker 1: bewildering murder of Diane Kine. This case takes us from
- 0:44Speaker 1: a chaotic disturbance in front of the kind family home
- 0:47Speaker 1: in Seminole, through conflicting interviews, perplexing physical evidence, and leads
- 0:52Speaker 1: us to not one, but two murder trials. Let's take
- 0:57Speaker 1: a look. The city of Seminole is in Pinellas County, Florida,
- 1:11Speaker 1: only a short drive from the beach and containing a
- 1:13Speaker 1: few lovely parks. It is a beautiful area and popular
- 1:17Speaker 1: amongst retirees. It was here that William Kine, who goes
- 1:20Speaker 1: by Bill, was living with his wife, Diane and her
- 1:23Speaker 1: twenty three year old son, Kevin. He had met Diane
- 1:26Speaker 1: in the early two thousands after he spotted Diane through
- 1:29Speaker 1: the window of the nail salon that she ran with
- 1:31Speaker 1: her twin sister. After using his daughter as an excuse
- 1:34Speaker 1: to frequent the business, he finally worked up the courage
- 1:37Speaker 1: to ask Diane out.
- 1:38Speaker 2: On a date.
- 1:39Speaker 1: It had been a whirlwind romance. After dating for not
- 1:42Speaker 1: quite two years, the couple married in two thousand and two.
- 1:46Speaker 1: At that time, her son Kevin was fifteen years old.
- 1:50Speaker 1: By twenty ten, young Kevin was twenty three and Bill
- 1:53Speaker 1: was over sixty. Bill was the owner of five Star
- 1:57Speaker 1: Automotive in Saint Petersburg for a time, and Diane had
- 2:00Speaker 1: started a business on eBay. She had filled the bedrooms
- 2:03Speaker 1: of their home with her merchandise. Diana adored animals and
- 2:06Speaker 1: kept two Yorkshire Terriers, two Malteses, and a goat named Lacey,
- 2:11Speaker 1: named after Lacy Peterson, the California woman who was murdered
- 2:14Speaker 1: by her husband. Outwardly, the family appeared happy. Four years
- 2:20Speaker 1: after the marriage, Kevin had chosen to take his new
- 2:22Speaker 1: stepfather's family name, Kevin Karrakesh became Kevin Kine. August fifteenth,
- 2:30Speaker 1: twenty ten was a Sunday. The day began relatively normally
- 2:34Speaker 1: in the kind family's quiet, Seminole neighborhood. The calm of
- 2:37Speaker 1: this pleasant Sunday afternoon would not last, however. At just
- 2:41Speaker 1: before three pm, baffled neighbors peered through their windows in
- 2:45Speaker 1: shock and confusion to view young Kevin and his stepfather,
- 2:48Speaker 1: Bill tumble from their house and continue a physical, chaotic
- 2:52Speaker 1: struggle with each other on their front lawn. Articles of
- 2:56Speaker 1: clothing were being discarded on the ground as the two fought.
- 2:59Speaker 1: Bill was able to get a hold of Kevin for
- 3:01Speaker 1: a time, but it would not last. At one point,
- 3:04Speaker 1: the two appeared to struggle while Kevin reached for his
- 3:07Speaker 1: cell phone. Witnesses later recounted that the altercation seemed to
- 3:10Speaker 1: go on forever, but in retrospect, the stepfather and son
- 3:14Speaker 1: likely struggled for only a few minutes. Kevin managed to
- 3:18Speaker 1: break free of Bill's grip. He ran two doors down
- 3:20Speaker 1: to a neighbor's home, dressed only in his boxer shorts. Bill,
- 3:24Speaker 1: also only partially dressed, returned to the house. There were
- 3:28Speaker 1: two nine to one one calls placed, which brought police
- 3:31Speaker 1: to the home within minutes of the scuffle outside. The
- 3:33Speaker 1: first call was placed by Kevin on his cell phone
- 3:36Speaker 1: as he fought with Bill. The older man had managed
- 3:38Speaker 1: to get Kevin into a chokehold intermittently, but not to
- 3:41Speaker 1: fully restrain him. The police, fire or medical emergency? What's
- 3:58Speaker 1: going on?
- 3:58Speaker 2: Where are you at, sir?
- 4:03Speaker 3: He's outside of the rock, he stoke. Okay, calm down, Okay,
- 4:10Speaker 3: what's going on there, sir?
- 4:12Speaker 2: What's going on?
- 4:14Speaker 3: I can't believe?
- 4:15Speaker 2: Okay, all right, and I'll throw an appartment.
- 4:20Speaker 1: Kevin told the operator that he had been taking a
- 4:22Speaker 1: nap when he was awoken by his stepfather and told
- 4:25Speaker 1: that his mother needed to speak with him immediately. But
- 4:28Speaker 1: when he approached the bedroom where his mother was lying down,
- 4:31Speaker 1: her face appeared discolored. It was black and blue. He
- 4:35Speaker 1: knew something was wrong, but in that moment Bill approached
- 4:38Speaker 1: him from behind. The older man managed to restrain Kevin
- 4:41Speaker 1: in a chokehold, he claimed while he struggled to break free.
- 4:45Speaker 1: The altercation then overflowed onto the front lawn, and Kevin
- 4:48Speaker 1: made desperate attempts to flee from his stepfather.
- 4:52Speaker 4: Laying on the couch.
- 4:53Speaker 1: So when I went into the room, he started choking
- 4:55Speaker 1: me out.
- 4:56Speaker 3: And I tried to wake her up as he was
- 4:57Speaker 3: delos to her face and her face was black.
- 5:00Speaker 1: Four minutes after Kevin placed his call accusing his stepfather
- 5:03Speaker 1: of killing his mother, Bill Kind returned to the house
- 5:07Speaker 1: and also phoned nine to one one.
- 5:24Speaker 4: Listen, we've got help on the way, but I needed
- 5:25Speaker 4: to do a couple of things for me.
- 5:26Speaker 3: Okay, okon, are you right there with her?
- 5:30Speaker 4: Okay, I want you to check it she awake?
- 5:37Speaker 3: Is she breathing at all?
- 5:38Speaker 1: So okay, I want you to stay in the line
- 5:40Speaker 1: with you and say, I'm gonna walk you through something.
- 5:43Speaker 3: Do you have a the fibrillator available?
- 5:48Speaker 1: In Bill's version of events, he walked into the bedroom
- 5:51Speaker 1: to find Kevin leaning over Diana strangling her. Acting quickly,
- 5:55Speaker 1: he placed Kevin in a chokehold and pulled him from
- 5:57Speaker 1: the room. The struggle continued as Bill pursued Kevin outside.
- 6:01Speaker 1: Bill said he was then overpowered by the younger man,
- 6:04Speaker 1: who threw him around like a rag doll as Kevin
- 6:07Speaker 1: ran from him down the street. Bill returned to the
- 6:09Speaker 1: house and called nine to one one. He went into
- 6:12Speaker 1: the kitchen to place the call. To that point, he
- 6:16Speaker 1: had not paused to check on his wife or to
- 6:18Speaker 1: see if she was still breathing. Bill met with police
- 6:23Speaker 1: when they arrived at the house at about three pm.
- 6:26Speaker 1: Kevin Kine was still at the neighbors when the deputies arrived.
- 6:29Speaker 1: He was located quickly in the house. They found Diane,
- 6:33Speaker 1: forty nine years old, deceased in the bedroom, laying face
- 6:36Speaker 1: up on her bed, and autopsy would later reveal that
- 6:39Speaker 1: she had either been strangled or smothered. The EMT that
- 6:43Speaker 1: first responded to the scene noted that Diane was already
- 6:46Speaker 1: cold to the touch, which should indicate that she had
- 6:48Speaker 1: been murdered some time before the emergency calls were placed.
- 6:52Speaker 1: There was some physical evidence collected at the scene which
- 6:55Speaker 1: would prove pivotal to the investigation. First, five small droplets
- 6:59Speaker 1: of blood were located in two locations in the bedroom,
- 7:03Speaker 1: a few small specks on the comforter that lay on
- 7:05Speaker 1: the bed as well as on Diane's thigh. A single
- 7:08Speaker 1: sandal was on the floor at the end of the bed,
- 7:10Speaker 1: its pair was found by the door, and a pair
- 7:13Speaker 1: of eyeglasses were sitting next to the bed. DNA testing
- 7:17Speaker 1: was also conducted in the room and swabs taken to
- 7:20Speaker 1: match that of Diane, Bill and Kevin. The two men
- 7:24Speaker 1: were brought in by the police for questioning. Both of
- 7:27Speaker 1: their stories are inconsistent not only with each other, but
- 7:30Speaker 1: with their nine to one one calls and the physical evidence.
- 7:33Speaker 1: In both nine to one one recordings, the callers imply
- 7:36Speaker 1: that they entered the bedroom with Diane at some point.
- 7:39Speaker 1: Kevin when he claims to have approached his deceased mother,
- 7:42Speaker 1: and Bill when he claims to have encountered the murder.
- 7:45Speaker 1: Kevin stated clearly that he went into the room and
- 7:48Speaker 1: that he had been in the process of trying to
- 7:50Speaker 1: wake his mother when Bill attacked him.
- 7:52Speaker 3: So when in the room, he started choking me out
- 7:55Speaker 3: and I tried to wake her up well.
- 7:57Speaker 1: When questioned by police, he denied entering the room at all,
- 8:00Speaker 1: claiming instead that he only paused at the doorway before
- 8:03Speaker 1: Bill came up behind him. Bill was interviewed on three
- 8:07Speaker 1: separate occasions. In the first two instances, he also denied
- 8:11Speaker 1: entering the room after the encounter with Kevin, but on
- 8:13Speaker 1: his nine to one one call, he very clearly sounded
- 8:16Speaker 1: as though he was right next to his wife trying
- 8:18Speaker 1: to assist her.
- 8:19Speaker 4: Are you right there with her? Okay, I want you
- 8:25Speaker 4: to take a she awake.
- 8:27Speaker 1: Confronted with this recording, Bill's third and final statement to
- 8:31Speaker 1: police was that he thought it would sound better if
- 8:34Speaker 1: he had not re entered the room.
- 8:37Speaker 2: I wish you'd have gone back and shack daughter instead
- 8:39Speaker 2: of chasing him.
- 8:41Speaker 1: I thought it would look better if I didn't make
- 8:43Speaker 1: it back into the room, that Kevin was the only
- 8:45Speaker 1: one in the room.
- 8:47Speaker 5: Why would that look better?
- 8:50Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 8:52Speaker 1: When the DNA testing was returned, the blood found inside
- 8:55Speaker 1: the room was determined to be Kevin's. It was not
- 8:57Speaker 1: clear how it came to be there. Police at the
- 9:00Speaker 1: filmed that he had visible cuts on his neck after
- 9:02Speaker 1: the struggle with Bill, but he did not re enter
- 9:05Speaker 1: the house after that altercation. DNA testing on the sandal
- 9:09Speaker 1: matched Kevin as well. He initially denied to law enforcement
- 9:12Speaker 1: that these were his shoes. Bill insisted that he and
- 9:15Speaker 1: Diane had purchased them for Kevin a year prior, and
- 9:18Speaker 1: that he frequently wore them around the house. The eyeglasses
- 9:22Speaker 1: were also determined to be Kevin's. Investigators believed that all
- 9:26Speaker 1: this placed Kevin inside the room before his mother's death.
- 9:30Speaker 1: The sun was almost certainly lying as I pushed her
- 9:35Speaker 1: door open, he grabbed me from the back of the
- 9:38Speaker 1: neck and started choking me. And I saw my mom
- 9:41Speaker 1: on her back. Her face was absolutely blue.
- 9:44Speaker 5: Did you kill your mother?
- 9:45Speaker 3: No, sir, I did not.
- 9:47Speaker 1: Bill further explained to investigators that Kevin had grown increasingly
- 9:51Speaker 1: angry and volatile with his mother, which had culminated in
- 9:54Speaker 1: multiple violent incidents. On the day of the murder, the
- 9:58Speaker 1: three of them had been arguing over kevin use of
- 10:00Speaker 1: the computer, a small issue, perhaps, but one that was
- 10:04Speaker 1: representative of the already embedded animosity in the household. Bill
- 10:08Speaker 1: and Diane had wanted twenty three year olds Kevin to
- 10:11Speaker 1: leave the house and get a job, not to spend
- 10:13Speaker 1: all day on the computer. Kevin's behavior had been unstable,
- 10:17Speaker 1: but was that enough to lead to murder. Bill's DNA
- 10:24Speaker 1: was also found inside the room, and, perhaps most crucially,
- 10:27Speaker 1: a match of Bill's DNA was found on Diane's neck.
- 10:31Speaker 1: Aside from the blood droplets, Kevin's DNA was not found
- 10:34Speaker 1: anywhere on his mother. Law enforcement largely disregarded the match
- 10:38Speaker 1: to Bill. However, despite its location on the neck. It
- 10:41Speaker 1: was not unreasonable, after all, to find the husband's DNA
- 10:44Speaker 1: on his wife and in their shared bedroom, but Bill
- 10:48Speaker 1: had also failed to be upfront with the investigators. Both
- 10:51Speaker 1: men were given polygraph tests. Kevin passed his test without issue. Bill, however,
- 10:59Speaker 1: tested as to sept on three questions, two of which
- 11:02Speaker 1: pertain to Diane's death. The first question that registered as
- 11:06Speaker 1: deceptive asked Bill directly if he caused the death of
- 11:09Speaker 1: his wife. The second inquired as to whether he had
- 11:12Speaker 1: lied to law enforcement about finding Kevin on top of Diane.
- 11:16Speaker 5: I have told you what really have Which version are
- 11:21Speaker 5: we supposed to believe you have been truthful to us
- 11:26Speaker 5: at this point? You see how this is going? M M.
- 11:29Speaker 2: You fail a polygraph?
- 11:31Speaker 5: Your DNAs on our neck isn't.
- 11:34Speaker 1: As Bill stuck to his story, police were left with
- 11:37Speaker 1: little to go on. Polygraphs may serve as a useful
- 11:40Speaker 1: indicator of deception, but may just as likely prove false.
- 11:44Speaker 1: Investigators turned their attention towards the Kind family history, the
- 11:48Speaker 1: dynamic amongst family members, and any potential motive these two
- 11:52Speaker 1: men may have had for murder. The third question that
- 11:58Speaker 1: Bill Kind failed on his polya did not directly address
- 12:01Speaker 1: Diane's murder, but rather the death of his first wife,
- 12:05Speaker 1: Christa by the year of her death. In two thousand,
- 12:10Speaker 1: Bill and Christa had been married for twenty two years.
- 12:13Speaker 1: The two were raising five children in the same seminole
- 12:15Speaker 1: house where Bill and Diane would later reside with Kevin.
- 12:19Speaker 1: At the age of forty four, Christa was found drowned
- 12:22Speaker 1: in the family swimming pool with what was described as
- 12:24Speaker 1: gardening equipment tied around her neck. She was found by
- 12:28Speaker 1: her husband, then forty two years old, at nine am
- 12:31Speaker 1: the next morning, a Sunday. Their daughter called nine one
- 12:34Speaker 1: one while Bill pulled Christa from the pool, but it
- 12:37Speaker 1: was too late. She was no longer conscious. It was
- 12:40Speaker 1: unclear how long she had been in the water. Investigators
- 12:46Speaker 1: determined that Christa had tripped, hit her head, and fell
- 12:49Speaker 1: into the pool. Bill was never considered a suspect. The
- 12:53Speaker 1: death was deemed a tragic accident. He would tell the
- 12:58Speaker 1: examiner in his polygraph that he did not cause the
- 13:01Speaker 1: death of his first wife, and the examiner assessed that
- 13:04Speaker 1: he was lying. After Chris's death, Bill received a life
- 13:08Speaker 1: insurance payout of two hundred and fifty thousand dollars, and
- 13:12Speaker 1: this was just one of multiple insurance payouts that Bill
- 13:14Speaker 1: would receive over the years. It seems that Bill Kine
- 13:18Speaker 1: has had some exceptionally bad luck in both his personal
- 13:21Speaker 1: life and business ventures. Both Bill's autoshop as well as
- 13:25Speaker 1: a separate investment property burnt to the ground, leading to
- 13:28Speaker 1: additional insurance funds of undisclosed amounts, and at least one
- 13:33Speaker 1: of these cases, the cause was suspected arson, though nothing
- 13:37Speaker 1: was ever conclusively proven. Each one of these instances, taken individually,
- 13:42Speaker 1: were deemed unsuspicious, but taken as a whole, these payments
- 13:46Speaker 1: were a red flag. When investigators in Diane's murder case
- 13:49Speaker 1: looked into her life insurance, they found Bill had taken
- 13:52Speaker 1: out policies on her, totaling seven hundred and fifty thousand dollars.
- 14:00Speaker 1: Kevin Kind also had a motive to kill his mother.
- 14:03Speaker 1: In fact, he had a history of being argumentative, abusive,
- 14:06Speaker 1: and threatening towards Diane, behaviors that were escalating in the
- 14:10Speaker 1: months prior to her death. According to witnesses and other
- 14:13Speaker 1: family members, including Bill's brother Jeremy, Kevin had a habit
- 14:17Speaker 1: of goading his stepfather, go ahead, hit me, then I
- 14:20Speaker 1: can call the police and you can go to jail,
- 14:22Speaker 1: he is quoted as saying, and the police were called
- 14:26Speaker 1: to the home many times. In each instance, the officers
- 14:30Speaker 1: would determine that although Kevin had called them out to
- 14:32Speaker 1: accuse his stepfather, he was the problem, and Kevin was
- 14:36Speaker 1: a problem to both of his parents. Kevin had dropped
- 14:40Speaker 1: out of Seminole High School, but later got a high
- 14:42Speaker 1: school equivalency. He had been arrested several times, starting at
- 14:46Speaker 1: age twelve, on charges that include battery, marijuana possession, resisting arrest,
- 14:51Speaker 1: and criminal mischief. According to Bill, Kevin liked pain pills
- 14:55Speaker 1: and the anti anxiety drug xanax, and he could become violent.
- 15:00Speaker 1: His mother and stepfather entered him into drug treatment, set
- 15:03Speaker 1: him up in jobs, and paid for his apartment. In
- 15:05Speaker 1: a documented case, Kevin had gotten into an intense argument
- 15:09Speaker 1: with his aunt, following which authorities had to arrest him.
- 15:13Speaker 1: He kept a job at a neighboring circle K for months,
- 15:16Speaker 1: but most jobs lasted just days or weeks. Without a job,
- 15:20Speaker 1: Kevin had no place to stay except home. Two years
- 15:24Speaker 1: before the murder, the living situation had gotten so bad
- 15:27Speaker 1: that Diane had a formal eviction notice served to her son,
- 15:31Speaker 1: and with the help of the Sheriff's office, he was
- 15:33Speaker 1: forced out. But Diane always took him back. It had
- 15:38Speaker 1: been a rough time for Kevin. A month prior, he
- 15:41Speaker 1: had an operation to remove a benine tumor from his brain.
- 15:44Speaker 1: On the day of the murder, he had been resting
- 15:46Speaker 1: on the couch as he was still in recovery. This
- 15:49Speaker 1: is counter to Bill's recollection of that day. Kevin and
- 15:52Speaker 1: Diane had been fighting on and off while Bill claimed
- 15:55Speaker 1: to be watching Nascar in another room. Kevin had changed
- 15:58Speaker 1: the access code to the computer so that no one
- 16:00Speaker 1: else could use it. Diane wanted access restored, and she
- 16:04Speaker 1: wanted her son out of the house. She had imposed
- 16:08Speaker 1: a deadline again and gave Kevin only a few weeks
- 16:11Speaker 1: to leave the house. After a few minutes, when he
- 16:14Speaker 1: heard the arguing turn to silence, Bill went to check
- 16:17Speaker 1: on Diane. That is when he found Kevin with his
- 16:20Speaker 1: hands on his mother's throat. The blood found in the
- 16:25Speaker 1: room and on Diane, coupled with Kevin's history of anger issues,
- 16:29Speaker 1: was enough to push for an indictment of first degree
- 16:31Speaker 1: murder against him. Speaking to the grand jury, Kevin did
- 16:36Speaker 1: himself no favors when he testified that he and his
- 16:38Speaker 1: stepfather had a good relationship with few issues. This was
- 16:42Speaker 1: demonstrably false. He was indicted in twenty eleven and went
- 16:46Speaker 1: to trial. Kevin's public defenders strongly suggested that it was
- 16:50Speaker 1: his stepfather, Bill Kind, that committed the murder for the
- 16:53Speaker 1: life insurance money, but with the motives and stories so
- 16:57Speaker 1: directly opposed, it was the physical evidence that weighed most heavily.
- 17:02Speaker 1: The prosecution did not offer a logical explanation for the
- 17:05Speaker 1: small droplets of Kevin's blood inside the room, but they
- 17:09Speaker 1: did contend that this placed him in the room and
- 17:11Speaker 1: proved him a liar. The prosecution also pointed towards the
- 17:15Speaker 1: sandals that they claimed placed Kevin inside the room, though
- 17:19Speaker 1: he denied ever fully entering. In addition, the state of
- 17:23Speaker 1: Florida produced a jailhouse informant who claimed that Kevin had
- 17:26Speaker 1: admitted to the murder and provided details that they claimed
- 17:30Speaker 1: only Kevin could know. The jury found Kevin Kind guilty
- 17:36Speaker 1: of second degree murder, and he was sentenced to life
- 17:39Speaker 1: in prison. Juriors stated afterwards that they found no reasonable
- 17:43Speaker 1: doubt presented at trial, but two years into serving his sentence,
- 17:47Speaker 1: Kevin's appeal was heard by the court and his conviction
- 17:50Speaker 1: was overturned. The Second District Court of Appeals in Florida
- 17:55Speaker 1: found that it was unlawful to have allowed evidence of
- 17:57Speaker 1: Kevin's prior alleged violent or provocative incidents with his stepfather
- 18:02Speaker 1: as evidence against him at trial. The state sought to
- 18:05Speaker 1: prove a volatile pattern of behavior, and in doing so,
- 18:09Speaker 1: they introduced many disputes between Kevin and Bill that had
- 18:13Speaker 1: no connection to the anger that Kevin may have felt
- 18:15Speaker 1: towards his mother or the specific circumstances of her murder.
- 18:20Speaker 1: The state needed to try again. Kevin Kine's retrial commenced
- 18:24Speaker 1: in early twenty fifteen. There were a few key differences
- 18:29Speaker 1: between Kevin's first and second trial. First, of course, Kevin's
- 18:33Speaker 1: history of angry disputes with Bill was omitted. Second, the
- 18:37Speaker 1: defense team did not just suggest that Bill Kind was
- 18:39Speaker 1: responsible for Diane's death. They outright accused him of it.
- 18:44Speaker 3: Bill Kine has lied over and over and over again.
- 18:48Speaker 3: He's lied to save his own skin, he's lied to
- 18:51Speaker 3: protect himself. He's lied to set up my client for murder,
- 18:55Speaker 3: and the state expects you to convict Kevin based on
- 18:59Speaker 3: that man's word.
- 19:02Speaker 1: The third, and perhaps a crucial difference in this trial
- 19:04Speaker 1: compared to the first was that. Kevin chose to take
- 19:07Speaker 1: the stand in his own defense. When he did so,
- 19:10Speaker 1: the prosecution grilled him about his past behavior. He had
- 19:14Speaker 1: been a brat at the age of twenty three. He
- 19:16Speaker 1: admitted to acting immaturely. He had been rude and regularly
- 19:20Speaker 1: acting out against his mother. He also admitted that his
- 19:23Speaker 1: mother was all that he had, so why would he
- 19:26Speaker 1: kill her?
- 19:29Speaker 2: That's absolutely brady? Okay? But isn't brad a term usually
- 19:34Speaker 2: as applies to children. That's how I figure I was acting.
- 19:40Speaker 2: You're twenty three years old, right, correct, and so you'd
- 19:42Speaker 2: agree with you?
- 19:43Speaker 4: Would you not that a parent who has a brat
- 19:47Speaker 4: who's eight or ten years old, okay, would deal with that.
- 19:52Speaker 4: Then a parent that had a twenty three year old
- 19:54Speaker 4: that was still call himself a brat, right, correct? Because
- 19:57Speaker 4: you're old enough to be out of the house.
- 20:00Speaker 2: Correct. If your kids are brat when they're eight or ten,
- 20:03Speaker 2: you just got to live with it pretty much, don't you.
- 20:05Speaker 5: It's correct?
- 20:05Speaker 2: Okay? Your mother did not have to live with your behavior,
- 20:08Speaker 2: did she. She didn't have to know, but she had
- 20:12Speaker 2: no choice because you wouldn't leave, right. I was given
- 20:19Speaker 2: a date.
- 20:19Speaker 4: I mean, well, you've been giving a date on a
- 20:21Speaker 4: number of occasions, hadn't you?
- 20:23Speaker 3: They kept letting me come back because I had nowhere
- 20:25Speaker 3: to go.
- 20:25Speaker 2: Well, you just kept arguing with him. You didn't want
- 20:28Speaker 2: to get out of the house, did you. I just
- 20:31Speaker 2: wanted somewhere to stay.
- 20:33Speaker 3: When you opened the door, did you take any steps
- 20:35Speaker 3: into the bedroom?
- 20:37Speaker 2: I might have took one or two steps just opening
- 20:39Speaker 2: the door. This is taking one or two steps. This
- 20:42Speaker 2: is the first time you said that in four and
- 20:45Speaker 2: a half years. Right, I was always saying that I've
- 20:49Speaker 2: opened the door and that's as far as I've went.
- 20:51Speaker 2: You were always saying you never went in the bedroom.
- 20:54Speaker 3: Right.
- 20:56Speaker 1: The secondary found a reasonable doubt that the first had not,
- 20:59Speaker 1: and kind supported by his paternal grandmother, Phyllis Karakesh was
- 21:04Speaker 1: found not guilty and released from custody after years of
- 21:07Speaker 1: imprisonment in.
- 21:09Speaker 4: The state of Florida.
- 21:10Speaker 1: Versus Kevin Lee Kine in a charge of murder in
- 21:12Speaker 1: the second degree, the defendant is found not guilty. Did
- 21:18Speaker 1: you kill your mother? No, sir, I did not.
- 21:20Speaker 3: For the first time ever, Kevin Kine answers that question
- 21:23Speaker 3: as a free man. Feels great.
- 21:26Speaker 1: It's been a long journey. Bill Kine was in court
- 21:29Speaker 1: with his new wife to hear the verdict, which delivered
- 21:32Speaker 1: a blow to him in more ways than one.
- 21:36Speaker 5: But I feel comfortable sitting here, and I feel comfortable
- 21:40Speaker 5: when I go to my grave that I didn't make
- 21:42Speaker 5: a mistake.
- 21:42Speaker 1: Geiger says he and the other jurors would have liked
- 21:44Speaker 1: to have heard testimony about the death of Bill Kine's
- 21:47Speaker 1: first wife in that same home. Bill Kine has been
- 21:51Speaker 1: cleared in the death of both of his wives. He
- 21:53Speaker 1: later remarried a woman named Tanya, who passed away of
- 21:56Speaker 1: cancer in twenty seventeen. Bill published an auto biography the
- 22:00Speaker 1: following year, detailing his many losses. It's entitled Love That
- 22:05Speaker 1: Lasts a Lifetime. The book description reads, through candid anecdotes
- 22:10Speaker 1: and inspirational advice, kind invites all of us to see
- 22:13Speaker 1: how with hope, love and faith, we too can reach
- 22:17Speaker 1: the highest mountaintops and survive the deepest valleys of despair.
- 22:22Speaker 1: The following year, Bill was charged with leaving the scene
- 22:24Speaker 1: of an accident after he drove his motorcycle through a
- 22:27Speaker 1: group of cyclists, sending one individual to intensive care. It
- 22:32Speaker 1: is not just Bill that found himself caught up again
- 22:35Speaker 1: with the law in the years after the second trial, Kevin,
- 22:38Speaker 1: who reverted back to his birth name Kara Kesh, was
- 22:41Speaker 1: arrested again in twenty sixteen on a felony battery charge
- 22:45Speaker 1: in relation to a fight in a pool hall. It
- 22:47Speaker 1: was reported that he struck a man with a triangle
- 22:50Speaker 1: rack as part of a brawl at a seminole pub.
- 22:57Speaker 1: The murder of Diane Kine remains unsolved. Her son and
- 23:00Speaker 1: husband continue to call the other a murderer, and there
- 23:03Speaker 1: is no doubt that one of them is correct. The
- 23:06Speaker 1: Penela's Pasco State Attorney's Office has stated publicly they were
- 23:10Speaker 1: confident that they put the right kind on trial. Thanks
- 23:16Speaker 1: for watching. I'm Kevin. This is just thot lounge and
- 23:19Speaker 1: I'll see in the next one.
