- 0:08SPEAKER_00: I am Jen.
- 0:09SPEAKER_00: I'm Rachel.
- 0:10SPEAKER_00: And we are so excited to be here with Nikay of Planted Tea.
- 0:15SPEAKER_00: And um, we're here in the Mulberry Gallery, which is inside of Revolution off Central.

- 0:21SPEAKER_00: It's really cool.
- 0:23SPEAKER_00: We'll go ahead and we'll grab some footage of some of the art.
- 0:26SPEAKER_01: Yes, it's on the upper level.
- 0:27SPEAKER_01: You guys are looking for it.
- 0:30SPEAKER_01: Upper level.
- 0:31SPEAKER_00: Upper level of Revolution.
- 0:33SPEAKER_00: Yes, like right across, like right up above Fidelity.
- 0:36SPEAKER_00: Is it Fidelity mate?
- 0:37SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 0:37SPEAKER_00: And across from Ashconga, you've got yes.
- 0:40SPEAKER_00: Awesome.
- 0:41SPEAKER_00: Dig it.
- 0:42SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 0:42SPEAKER_00: This I feel like this place is always like shuffling around and becoming more cool.
- 0:47SPEAKER_00: I love Revolution so much.
- 0:49SPEAKER_00: Um, all right.
- 0:50SPEAKER_00: So we have a lot to go over tonight, but first we got to give a shout out to our sponsors.
- 0:55SPEAKER_00: New events, color therapy, backspace media.
- 0:58SPEAKER_00: We can't do it without you guys.
- 0:59SPEAKER_00: Thank you so much.
- 1:00SPEAKER_00: Thank you.
- 1:01SPEAKER_00: And tonight we're doing something a little different.
- 1:04SPEAKER_00: We're trading in wine glasses for teacups.
- 1:08SPEAKER_00: We're at Mulberry Gallery, like I mentioned at Revolucia.
- 1:11SPEAKER_00: This amazing, amazing little world made entirely out of shipping containers, which is so cool.
- 1:17SPEAKER_00: And we are just gonna sit down and have a great conversation with Nikayla, learn a little bit more about her business and her pop-ups and Tea Fest, which is coming up September 12th.
- 1:27SPEAKER_01: Yeah, what day of the week is September 12th?
- 1:28SPEAKER_01: That's gonna be Saturday.
- 1:29SPEAKER_01: A Saturday.
- 1:30SPEAKER_01: So yeah, so the Saturday after this comes out should be September 12th, correct?
- 1:34SPEAKER_00: No, I think we got a week and a half after.
- 1:37SPEAKER_00: A week and a half.
- 1:37SPEAKER_00: We can have plenty of time to prepare.
- 1:39SPEAKER_00: Yeah, make those plans.
- 1:40SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:41SPEAKER_00: And and what is admission to tea fest?
- 1:43SPEAKER_00: It's free.
- 1:46SPEAKER_00: Absolutely.
- 1:47SPEAKER_00: It's free to tea.
- 1:49SPEAKER_00: Free to tea fest.
- 1:51SPEAKER_00: And all right.
- 1:52SPEAKER_00: So before we get too far into anything, of course, we have to break the ice with our fun little game of this or that.
- 1:58SPEAKER_00: Tonight, of course, it's going to be herbally and tea themed.
- 2:03SPEAKER_00: So lots of fun with that.
- 2:04SPEAKER_00: I don't think we've ever used this theme before.
- 2:06SPEAKER_00: So news to us.
- 2:08SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 2:09SPEAKER_00: Okay, so first off, let's just start.
- 2:12SPEAKER_00: What I'll do is I'll give a this or that um two prompts, this thing or that thing.
- 2:16SPEAKER_00: And Nikay, you'll give your answer and a little explanation of why.
- 2:20SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 2:20SPEAKER_00: Then we'll go to Rachel, then I'll finish this off, and then I'll give us some new prompts and we'll go around probably three, four times, maybe five, you never know.
- 2:27SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it depends.
- 2:29SPEAKER_00: It just depends.
- 2:30SPEAKER_00: All right, so loose leaf or tea bag.
- 2:34SPEAKER_00: Loosely.
- 2:35SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 2:36SPEAKER_01: I mean, I gave him an answer.
- 2:38SPEAKER_01: Why?
- 2:39SPEAKER_01: Loosely.
- 2:39SPEAKER_01: Um, a lot of the tea bags have chemicals, the leaves are so little that's really just tea dust and not actual leaves to absorb water.
- 2:48SPEAKER_01: Loose leaf is just big leaves and flowers and absorb the water.
- 2:53SPEAKER_01: You don't have to deal with the bags.
- 2:55SPEAKER_01: So loose leave all the way.
- 2:56SPEAKER_00: Nice.
- 2:57SPEAKER_00: Okay, that makes a lot of sense.
- 2:58SPEAKER_00: I didn't think I didn't think about that.
- 2:59SPEAKER_01: Yeah, um, that's one I guess I have an actual answer for.
- 3:02SPEAKER_01: Usually I say both, but um I say loose leaf all the way.
- 3:07SPEAKER_01: I like uh doing sun tees and just big jars.
- 3:09SPEAKER_01: It's so much prettier.
- 3:11SPEAKER_01: Like, and I feel like you get so much more out of it for less that you use.
- 3:15SPEAKER_01: And maybe it is because I didn't think about it's just you know, more space surface area to absorb the water.
- 3:21SPEAKER_01: And so when you wring it out, and I just strain mine out with like a fine metal strainer, I pour it through into another jar.
- 3:27SPEAKER_01: Yep.
- 3:27SPEAKER_01: So yeah, I think it's just so much prettier, especially when you get the fruits in there and stuff, and you can watch it just like you know, dye the water.
- 3:34SPEAKER_01: It's so so fun.
- 3:36SPEAKER_01: And I have used bags before, but when I was like taking my loose leaf tea on the go for traveling, but they're like bag it yourself bags, the disposable bags.
- 3:44SPEAKER_01: Yeah, well, you can reuse them.
- 3:45SPEAKER_01: Oh, nice, yeah.
- 3:46SPEAKER_01: You can wash them out and reuse them too.
- 3:47SPEAKER_01: So I like that too because that feels graceful, but how about sometimes I just throw them away.
- 3:52SPEAKER_01: But just traveling or I was camping or something, you know.
- 3:56SPEAKER_01: Right, yeah.
- 3:56SPEAKER_01: So, but yeah, I agree with that for sure.
- 3:59SPEAKER_00: I think you guys have convinced me that loose loose leaf is best, the nutrients, you know, yeah, and of course the uh the prettiness.
- 4:06SPEAKER_00: I'm always a big fan of anything pretty, but and an experience.
- 4:10SPEAKER_00: I like the way that you explain, like you can see the you know, the ingredients kind of I've seen that before, and I do think that that's magical.
- 4:18SPEAKER_00: Or like when they have those buds, the flowers.
- 4:21SPEAKER_00: We can kind of see some of that in here too.
- 4:24SPEAKER_00: We just think that's so gorgeous.
- 4:26SPEAKER_00: You know, I buy I buy uh my mom loves tea and my mother-in-law loves tea, and so I I do love to tea shop for them.
- 4:33SPEAKER_00: It's a lot of fun around Christmas time.
- 4:35SPEAKER_00: There used to be a cute little tea shop over in Clifton Square.
- 4:39SPEAKER_00: I think now it's something else.
- 4:40SPEAKER_00: But and I've yet, I it sounds like I'm going to have an encounter with the tea shop too pretty easily.
- 4:48SPEAKER_01: Believe it or not, Christmas is just around the corner.
- 4:51SPEAKER_01: Santa's gonna be wearing a bikini this year, but he's coming.
- 4:55SPEAKER_01: He's shopping for tea.
- 4:56SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 4:57SPEAKER_00: In more ways than one.
- 4:59SPEAKER_00: But loosely for sure.
- 5:00SPEAKER_00: So that's my answer.
- 5:01SPEAKER_00: You guys have me talked into it.
- 5:03SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 5:03SPEAKER_00: I'm uh like I think I'm more of a coffee drinker, but I do.
- 5:08SPEAKER_00: Oh my gosh, I can definitely enjoy a nice little cup of tea.
- 5:12SPEAKER_01: And good point with the chemicals, because I bet a lot of companies die their bleached.
- 5:17SPEAKER_01: Yeah, probably because if they're white or something, then they probably are bleached or I don't know.
- 5:23SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 5:23SPEAKER_00: Well, okay, let's do it this way morning tea ritual or an afternoon wind-down cup.
- 5:29SPEAKER_00: Oh, that's hard.
- 5:31SPEAKER_01: I probably do the morning ritual more.
- 5:35SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 5:35SPEAKER_01: Because that's a pretty consistent ritual I have.
- 5:38SPEAKER_01: Uh-huh.
- 5:38SPEAKER_01: So the afternoon is amazing too.
- 5:41SPEAKER_01: Yeah, much needed.
- 5:43SPEAKER_01: But probably the morning.
- 5:44SPEAKER_01: That's more of a consistent thing I've got going on.
- 5:47SPEAKER_01: Yeah, okay.
- 5:48SPEAKER_01: What's your like go-to morning tea?
- 5:51SPEAKER_01: It's often has a little bit of caffeine in it.
- 5:54SPEAKER_01: I like my um blackberry sage.
- 5:56SPEAKER_01: It's an ool.
- 5:57SPEAKER_01: That sounds good.
- 5:57SPEAKER_01: So we do that one.
- 5:59SPEAKER_01: For this morning, I had like a green tea blend.
- 6:02SPEAKER_01: Um, so something that has a little bit of perk in it.
- 6:05SPEAKER_01: Oh, yeah.
- 6:05SPEAKER_01: A little bit of caffeine.
- 6:06SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 6:07SPEAKER_01: Um, generally.
- 6:10SPEAKER_01: What about for nighttime?
- 6:11SPEAKER_01: Which one do you drink an eye?
- 6:12SPEAKER_01: Nighttime, it's ease into it all the way.
- 6:15SPEAKER_01: It has a lot of your nerving, so really get you relaxed.
- 6:18SPEAKER_01: Like your chamomile, your valerian, but I think the star of that one is Valerian uh root, or I said chamomile lavender.
- 6:25SPEAKER_01: Valerian root is the star of that one.
- 6:27SPEAKER_01: Okay, it's a mild sedative, so it really gets you relaxed.
- 6:32SPEAKER_01: Nice.
- 6:32SPEAKER_01: I love it.
- 6:33SPEAKER_01: That one's definitely I'm gonna have to check that one out.
- 6:36SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 6:38SPEAKER_01: It kind of depends for me.
- 6:40SPEAKER_01: I do it for different reasons.
- 6:41SPEAKER_01: Like in the morning, I feel like if I'm gonna drink tea in the morning, I want it cold.
- 6:45SPEAKER_01: So it's like if I already have my sun tea prepped and in the fridge, then I'll put definitely, especially on the hot days.
- 6:51SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I'd rather go for tea than coffee.
- 6:54SPEAKER_01: Um, and then I'll just, you know, get me an icy tea to go.
- 6:57SPEAKER_01: And then I have it throughout the day too, and it keeps me going with that slight caffeine burst, especially for these the heat of these days.
- 7:05SPEAKER_01: But at night, even when it is like hot outside, once my iC has pulled me off enough.
- 7:10SPEAKER_01: I before bed, I definitely like a bedtime tea, like chamomile.
- 7:14SPEAKER_01: Um, I still have a jar of some chamomile from my mom's garden that we have from her that she harvested forever ago in our like I don't remember which garden it was, but it was forever ago, and she still has it, and it just smells so much better, like even than some of the other chamomiles.
- 7:30SPEAKER_01: And I think it's because it's nostalgic.
- 7:31SPEAKER_01: Like, I think that particular chamomile, because I think we found it somewhere in the wild, it's actually in our garden.
- 7:37SPEAKER_01: It smells better, but it's so it was so good.
- 7:39SPEAKER_01: So, yeah, yes, I for different reasons like both.
- 7:41SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 7:42SPEAKER_01: One gives to go and one calm to down, but yeah, that makes that makes a lot of sense.
- 7:48SPEAKER_00: I mean, for me, I guess the the way that I can relate to this is I have a matcha set in a matcha and so I do that a lot at my house, and I do it in the mornings.
- 7:58SPEAKER_00: Sometimes I'll make it like an iced matcha latte, um, which I really like, and then put a little lavender syrup in there.
- 8:05SPEAKER_00: I love a lavender matcha so much.
- 8:07SPEAKER_01: I do too, but I've never made one, I've never mastered it.
- 8:14SPEAKER_01: Yeah, you'll be going all day.
- 8:18SPEAKER_01: I've got definitely tried it.
- 8:20SPEAKER_01: That's what we get a lot when we get a coffee break.
- 8:22SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 8:23SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 8:24SPEAKER_01: I bought some one time, I think it's from the spice merchant, some matcha, but then I just couldn't get it right.
- 8:28SPEAKER_01: And then I had for too long, and I was like, I'm not gonna do anything with this because it kept clumping, but I didn't have one of the special.
- 8:34SPEAKER_01: Yeah, you gotta invest with it.
- 8:35SPEAKER_01: I did like the little frother thing, you know, but I think it went like too fast because it's so clumpy.
- 8:42SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it was like foamy and clumpy though.
- 8:43SPEAKER_01: So the powders, I haven't messed with the powders or the concentrated teas.
- 8:48SPEAKER_01: I just loose sleeve is easy for me.
- 8:50SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 8:51SPEAKER_00: And it's so crazy.
- 8:53SPEAKER_00: Those little bags, I just oh, they're so pretty tea bags.
- 8:57SPEAKER_01: So you are a bag, tea bag, baby.
- 8:59SPEAKER_01: We got you.
- 9:00SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I knew it didn't take long.
- 9:05SPEAKER_00: Okay, so what and you know, another thing that like when I think of tea at night, it's always for me, unfortunately, always because I'm sick.
- 9:14SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 9:15SPEAKER_00: When I'm having tea, and it's always warm and it's always loaded with honey, and it feels good and it tastes amazing, but it's always because I'm sick.
- 9:21SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I need to maybe shift that a little bit.
- 9:24SPEAKER_01: Yeah, just to enjoy and yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 9:26SPEAKER_01: I need to, you know, get to in the circadian rhythm, like moon to go to bed, yeah, relax.
- 9:33SPEAKER_01: Why didn't your horizon of the you know, the reasons you uh favor tea for sure.
- 9:38SPEAKER_01: Or just go for preventative so you don't feel sick.
- 9:41SPEAKER_01: Oh my god, all about that idea for sure.
- 9:44SPEAKER_01: Let's go.
- 9:45SPEAKER_01: Especially because we need it.
- 9:46SPEAKER_01: So immune supportive.
- 9:48SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 9:50SPEAKER_00: I'm all about that.
- 9:51SPEAKER_00: Yes, nobody's got time to be sick.
- 9:53SPEAKER_00: That's not cool.
- 9:54SPEAKER_00: I don't like it.
- 9:55SPEAKER_00: It's like the least, but okay.
- 9:58SPEAKER_01: I mean, I agree.
- 9:59SPEAKER_01: I do love a hot toddy if I have a sore throat.
- 10:01SPEAKER_00: Oh my gosh, yeah.
- 10:04SPEAKER_01: It's crazy how the hot warm tea, you just need one tiny little splash of whatever whiskey, but then it's like it intensifies up.
- 10:11SPEAKER_01: I love it.
- 10:11SPEAKER_00: I do like that too.
- 10:13SPEAKER_00: And that for some reason, adding the whiskey to it makes me feel it just adds a little bit more.
- 10:19SPEAKER_00: It's doing well, I'm definitely doing more because I'm gonna get my cheeks going, but it adds a little holiday reminiscence for me too.
- 10:27SPEAKER_00: I don't know if it's because I'm always sick just historically the last few years.
- 10:30SPEAKER_00: That's been what's happened.
- 10:31SPEAKER_00: Oh my.
- 10:32SPEAKER_00: Um, so clearly I need to look into the preventative tea and nightly ritual, romanticized my life a little bit.
- 10:38SPEAKER_01: Yes, romanticize tea in my life.
- 10:41SPEAKER_00: I can definitely get down for that.
- 10:43SPEAKER_00: Okay, so okay, I like this question.
- 10:46SPEAKER_00: So, are you more for hot brew or cold brew?
- 10:49SPEAKER_01: Um, well, it depends on what herb or roots I'm using.
- 10:53SPEAKER_01: Because some of them, if I'm using like roots, like I have a sweet detox, and that needs to be hot brewed because since the roots are so hardy, they need the hot to get the medicinal constituents out.
- 11:06SPEAKER_01: Uh-huh.
- 11:07SPEAKER_01: But some herbs actually do better with cold infusion, like silvery elm, because that usilogenist stuff needs to come out with cold.
- 11:17SPEAKER_01: And so it really just depends on what I'm doing.
- 11:19SPEAKER_01: But like today, this cold termic island is super.
- 11:24SPEAKER_01: I prefer it cold right now because it's so hot.
- 11:29SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 11:29SPEAKER_01: But it is really nice hot too.
- 11:32SPEAKER_01: Um, I have I have some people who some customers that just love it hot, and they don't make it cold, but I like it either way, depending on my mood.
- 11:41SPEAKER_01: So right now it's cold.
- 11:42SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 11:42SPEAKER_00: I think I think when we when you had the pop-up, you were serving, were you serving this warm?
- 11:48SPEAKER_00: Both.
- 11:48SPEAKER_00: I had this one both to try it out.
- 11:50SPEAKER_00: Okay, I think I was sticking to the warm one and I was going on and on.
- 11:53SPEAKER_01: I loved it.
- 11:54SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and someone actually that day um tried both, and she she liked the hot, she didn't like the cold.
- 12:00SPEAKER_01: Yeah, this version of it.
- 12:02SPEAKER_01: Oh, that's so it brings a different flavor profile.
- 12:07SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 12:08SPEAKER_00: Very cool.
- 12:09SPEAKER_00: What about you?
- 12:09SPEAKER_00: Are you more of colder or hot brew?
- 12:11SPEAKER_01: Oh, I'm definitely cold brew right now.
- 12:15SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 12:15SPEAKER_01: For sure.
- 12:16SPEAKER_01: I feel like I drink more of it when it's cold.
- 12:18SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 12:19SPEAKER_01: When it's hot, it's usually like I'm drinking it hot in the morning or when I'm chit-chatting with gals and I'm just sipping on it.
- 12:25SPEAKER_01: Or if it's a nighttime tea, I'm chugging it before bed.
- 12:27SPEAKER_01: So it fits me, puts me out.
- 12:30SPEAKER_01: I'm like fast line, streamline this.
- 12:33SPEAKER_01: Probably cold just because I drink more when it's cold.
- 12:36SPEAKER_01: But and I can drink it throughout the whole day and it stays colder longer.
- 12:40SPEAKER_01: Versus like if I have a hot cup of tea, I like it at that perfect temperature hot, and then you know, yeah, it just goes away.
- 12:48SPEAKER_01: So I and then I'm too lazy to get back up and like do it again.
- 12:54SPEAKER_01: I have a cup warmer that electric like I have one of those cats that you can do.
- 12:59SPEAKER_01: Yes, but it's never exactly where I need it.
- 13:04SPEAKER_01: I know I bought two, one for work and one for a mug that does.
- 13:09SPEAKER_01: I guess I could, but then you put them in a metal mug and it's too hot.
- 13:13SPEAKER_01: You know?
- 13:14SPEAKER_01: So I don't know.
- 13:16SPEAKER_01: Both though, but definitely cold for more throughout the day and everything.
- 13:22SPEAKER_00: I think for me, it's it's I well, because I really like the ice matcha.
- 13:27SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I definitely lean more towards the ice.
- 13:30SPEAKER_00: But again, like when I'm sick or it's nighttime, or it's gonna be a hot toddy of some sort.
- 13:35SPEAKER_00: It's definitely gotta be hot.
- 13:36SPEAKER_00: I like I really like that feeling.
- 13:38SPEAKER_00: I just crazy.
- 13:41SPEAKER_01: I matcha to me, like I never really thought of it as a tea when I first got into the tea world.
- 13:47SPEAKER_01: Because it's not a it's not usually given anywhere as a leaf.
- 13:50SPEAKER_01: It's always a powder, right?
- 13:51SPEAKER_01: Yeah, is that right?
- 13:51SPEAKER_01: It's a concentrated green tea.
- 13:54SPEAKER_01: So it's just yeah, a powder form of green tea, so it's very stimulating.
- 13:59SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it's too stimulating for me.
- 14:01SPEAKER_01: I'm a little caffeine sensitive, so I have to be careful, but it it gets you going.
- 14:05SPEAKER_01: It makes my palms sweaty.
- 14:11SPEAKER_01: I never really knew.
- 14:12SPEAKER_01: I guess I was a little intimidated by it.
- 14:14SPEAKER_01: Because it's a powder, yeah.
- 14:15SPEAKER_01: And man, you don't want to breathe that stuff in.
- 14:17SPEAKER_01: It's like and the taste, but but you have to sometimes it's acquired taste, you know, because it is strong.
- 14:25SPEAKER_01: You have to figure out what you like to put it with syrups or whatever, you know, milk or however you like it.
- 14:30SPEAKER_01: It's crazy for not being a tea person, you go to the strongest, most betrayed.
- 14:34SPEAKER_02: Because I'm a coffee freak.
- 14:39SPEAKER_01: It's like, yeah, that one's like in between.
- 14:41SPEAKER_01: I you might like black tea then.
- 14:42SPEAKER_01: Yeah, okay.
- 14:44SPEAKER_01: Caffeine of the teas.
- 14:48SPEAKER_00: You got me laughing.
- 14:50SPEAKER_00: I have more time to try things out, and I'm definitely down for that.
- 14:53SPEAKER_00: Try some black tea.
- 14:54SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I think that would be fun.
- 14:55SPEAKER_00: See if they could see the same thing.
- 14:57SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
- 14:58SPEAKER_00: That would be interesting to find out for me.
- 15:01SPEAKER_00: Okay, so let's see.
- 15:06SPEAKER_00: Okay, let's do this.
- 15:08SPEAKER_00: I feel like I know the answers here, but I feel like it could also be a bit challenging.
- 15:11SPEAKER_00: But this will be our last one.
- 15:12SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 15:13SPEAKER_00: Tea date or coffee date?
- 15:15SPEAKER_00: Tea date or coffee date?
- 15:16SPEAKER_00: Well, yeah.
- 15:18SPEAKER_00: Coffee for tea or you mean for coffee.
- 15:20SPEAKER_00: Tea, of course.
- 15:22SPEAKER_01: No coffee for me.
- 15:23SPEAKER_01: No coffee for me.
- 15:25SPEAKER_01: I um I have to say coffee because I go on coffee dates all the time with tea.
- 15:30SPEAKER_01: Yeah, true.
- 15:31SPEAKER_01: We have a whole series about it.
- 15:33SPEAKER_01: But to be fair, we get matcha lattes.
- 15:36SPEAKER_01: I love me.
- 15:37SPEAKER_01: So I do tea.
- 15:38SPEAKER_01: It's kind of both.
- 15:39SPEAKER_01: I guess you're right.
- 15:40SPEAKER_01: And the last time I went to like a tea house for an actual tea party or tea brunch situation, I don't even remember where it was, but it was a lot of fun because it was like actually the classical vintage tea cup since he's like all of like the ruffly stuff, like super curly, like almost a lady-ish in there, and this little like house that was a cute little cottage house or something.
- 16:01SPEAKER_01: And they put the little biscuits and little sandwiches.
- 16:03SPEAKER_01: Yeah, was it Delano?
- 16:04SPEAKER_01: I don't think it was even here in town.
- 16:06SPEAKER_01: Okay, because we have, yeah.
- 16:08SPEAKER_01: Uh Delano, bed and breakfast.
- 16:09SPEAKER_01: They do little tea parties.
- 16:11SPEAKER_01: Um, they're gonna be T Fest, actually.
- 16:13SPEAKER_01: And I just found out that they did that because they signed up for Tfest.
- 16:16SPEAKER_01: So I'm like, I'm gonna have to go and maybe check it out.
- 16:19SPEAKER_01: I'll have to go to check that out.
- 16:20SPEAKER_01: That sounds amazing.
- 16:21SPEAKER_01: It was like when I was a child that my one of my ex-stepmothers took us there.
- 16:24SPEAKER_01: So I don't even remember.
- 16:26SPEAKER_01: But you remember that memory.
- 16:27SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I remember that it was in that little PT shop, but maybe it was there because I don't know where we would have done that out of town.
- 16:34SPEAKER_01: But yeah, yeah, I'll have to go and see if it sparked that that's where it was at.
- 16:38SPEAKER_01: But it was fun to actually like get in the like play tea set, you know.
- 16:43SPEAKER_01: All little girls had a tea set.
- 16:44SPEAKER_00: I was just that reminded me.
- 16:46SPEAKER_00: So when I was in Washington, DC last year, I was I was out there for work, but I was out there for a while.
- 16:52SPEAKER_00: So I had a little time to do tourist tea things.
- 16:54SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 16:55SPEAKER_00: And so I was kind of deciding the things that I wanted to do, and I saw one of the things that popped up was a double decker tea party box.
- 17:03SPEAKER_00: I've seen that looked incredible.
- 17:07SPEAKER_00: I almost signed up for that, but it clashed with it, ended up clashing with I needed to be at one of our hotels in the time that I wanted to go to.
- 17:14SPEAKER_00: Oh my gosh, it looked like it was an amazing place.
- 17:17SPEAKER_00: Yeah, because we have sightsy and empty and little pastries, and there were like stops you could get out and do stuff, and then you come back in and yeah, yeah, and there were add-ons.
- 17:28SPEAKER_00: That's adorable.
- 17:29SPEAKER_01: Oh my gosh, it looked like a drink.
- 17:31SPEAKER_01: Yeah, when people ask me to go to meetings and they say coffee, like tea for me, please.
- 17:37SPEAKER_01: Tea for me, please.
- 17:39SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I think well, I guess my answer is definitely gonna be the same as Rachel's because I I feel like it is usually yes, let's go get coffee.
- 17:47SPEAKER_00: I mean, even professionally, want to go get coffee?
- 17:50SPEAKER_00: Yeah, um, that's what it ends up.
- 17:52SPEAKER_00: But then, like Rachel said a lot of the time, it's yeah, yeah.
- 17:57SPEAKER_01: That's why I don't think of matcha as a tea too, because we always get it on our coffee brain.
- 18:02SPEAKER_01: Um wow, I've we are the problem.
- 18:05SPEAKER_01: We are the problem.
- 18:06SPEAKER_01: Matcha's getting kicked out of the tea crowd.
- 18:09SPEAKER_01: Oh my gosh.
- 18:11SPEAKER_01: What have we done?
- 18:12SPEAKER_01: Oh and that's the thing too, just with our verbiage around all of our culture, you know.
- 18:17SPEAKER_01: If like a guy or if anyone asks someone else on that, they want to go grab a coffee or you know, a meetup, meet for coffee.
- 18:23SPEAKER_01: What happened to tea?
- 18:25SPEAKER_01: Yeah, let's go get six, you know.
- 18:28SPEAKER_01: I guess we're in the wrong country for that.
- 18:30SPEAKER_01: Over overseas, they're like tea.
- 18:33SPEAKER_01: Yeah, now I hear tea time here.
- 18:35SPEAKER_01: I'm like, when are you golfing?
- 18:41SPEAKER_01: Wow, that should be a shirt.
- 18:44SPEAKER_01: All the different versions of tea.
- 18:47SPEAKER_00: It'd be amazing.
- 18:48SPEAKER_00: That's a good idea.
- 18:49SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 18:53SPEAKER_01: We got our tea tender over here.
- 18:55SPEAKER_01: Oh my gosh.
- 18:57SPEAKER_01: Thank you.
- 18:59SPEAKER_01: Yeah, so thank you.
- 19:01SPEAKER_01: Let's hear tell us about this tea again.
- 19:03SPEAKER_01: I know.
- 19:04SPEAKER_01: So this is turmeric island.
- 19:06SPEAKER_01: It's one of the most popular teas I have.
- 19:10SPEAKER_01: It has turmeric, some black pepper, apple pieces, so it has a little bit of sweetness to it.
- 19:16SPEAKER_01: Um, and this one will actually be featured at Tea Fest, but we're gonna make it into a tea mocktail, like a botanical refresher.
- 19:22SPEAKER_01: Um so we add a little bit of like coconut flavoring in there, and it makes it like into a tropical island spark is what we've called it.
- 19:33SPEAKER_01: It's a little spark of like some island flavors.
- 19:36SPEAKER_01: Yeah, so that you put pepper in there.
- 19:38SPEAKER_01: One of my friends who's a dietitian, she told me when she was making these antibiotic drinks that the pepper is what allows your body to absorb the turmeric.
- 19:46SPEAKER_01: Yeah, definitely.
- 19:47SPEAKER_01: And actually, turmeric is a fat soluble, so it um absorbs better with fat.
- 19:53SPEAKER_01: So if you make like golden milk with it, which I've done, and you add a milk or a full fat, you know, something, it helps even even more.
- 20:00SPEAKER_01: Yeah, okay, that's good to know.
- 20:02SPEAKER_01: I've been looking at a lot of recipes with turmeric, but where do you buy fresh turmeric?
- 20:06SPEAKER_01: It's fresh.
- 20:08SPEAKER_01: They have two the roof, whole foods, green acres, lots of places.
- 20:12SPEAKER_01: Or you can get it the dry um version, dry, you know, dry it out first, or you can do it fresh with the root.
- 20:18SPEAKER_00: Okay, nice.
- 20:20SPEAKER_01: Sweet.
- 20:21SPEAKER_01: You learn something every day.
- 20:22SPEAKER_00: I know, and I know turmeric is so good for you anyway.
- 20:25SPEAKER_00: It doesn't have anti-inflammatory.
- 20:28SPEAKER_00: It is good for you.
- 20:29SPEAKER_01: Yeah, but it will dye your fingers and clothes.
- 20:32SPEAKER_01: Oh, yes.
- 20:33SPEAKER_01: Yes, it is very potent in that way.
- 20:35SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it's always been one of my favorite flavors.
- 20:37SPEAKER_00: I I really love turmeric a lot.
- 20:39SPEAKER_00: Yeah, so I love it.
- 20:41SPEAKER_00: I yeah, this really stuck out to me when I was at the pop-up, so I love that it's here today.
- 20:45SPEAKER_00: And I noticed too, like now that my ice is melted, it it is like I the turmeric's a little bit sharper, and it can definitely get the black pepper in a little better too.
- 20:53SPEAKER_00: It's wild.
- 20:54SPEAKER_00: It's crazy how temperature changes the taste of things.
- 20:57SPEAKER_00: It really does.
- 20:57SPEAKER_01: Science is great.
- 20:59SPEAKER_00: Science is great.
- 21:02SPEAKER_00: All right, so we're gonna dive into uh the nitty-gritty.
- 21:05SPEAKER_00: We're gonna get to get to know you and your story a little bit better now.
- 21:08SPEAKER_00: So you've made it your mission to build tea and herbal knowledge here in Wichita, which we're doing a fantastic job of.
- 21:15SPEAKER_00: What did that landscape look like when you started and what's changed?
- 21:19SPEAKER_01: Yeah, so I think really I had moved back from Thailand and I wanted to just go somewhere, have a cup of tea, and get on my laptop and do some work or read a book.
- 21:32SPEAKER_01: And I really wasn't finding the space that I could do that or the spaces that mainly coffee shops that had some tea.
- 21:39SPEAKER_01: They just, you know, had like maybe one or two teas, bag teas, and it wasn't really like something that they could then share, like the properties of these herbs are in this or that.
- 21:49SPEAKER_01: And so I was like, okay, let's just create what I'm looking for, you know.
- 21:55SPEAKER_01: So I started just purchasing a bunch of herbs and blending and then just sharing that, and people were curious about it, and so I became more curious about could this be more than you know, just me.
- 22:07SPEAKER_01: Sharing this or that.
- 22:09SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 22:10SPEAKER_01: And then yeah, that's that's kind of where it became.
- 22:13SPEAKER_01: So I've done some pop-ups, I've done some educational workshops, and now doing T Fest.
- 22:19SPEAKER_01: That is so exciting.
- 22:20SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 22:22SPEAKER_00: It has been.
- 22:23SPEAKER_00: And so when how long ago did that start for you?
- 22:25SPEAKER_01: Well, it started quite a while ago.
- 22:28SPEAKER_01: I've been I've moved back here, I've been in Wichita for about five and a half, six years now.
- 22:33SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 22:33SPEAKER_01: So it was slowly, you know, just a learning process.
- 22:37SPEAKER_01: I mean, I took herbalism courses, I took uh a clinical herbalism course.
- 22:42SPEAKER_01: So we looked at labs too and herbs and just how you can hurt your own system with treating chronic or acute illnesses.
- 22:51SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 22:51SPEAKER_01: So it was, yeah, a long journey.
- 22:53SPEAKER_01: Um, and then you know, working on my own health challenges, and then just incorporating tea more as a ritual in your day-to-day, so it's not just when you're sick, you think about it.
- 23:06SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it's preventative or it's you know helpful with your mood or your energy.
- 23:10SPEAKER_01: Kind of make it a self-care thing, too.
- 23:13SPEAKER_01: A treat yourself moment.
- 23:14SPEAKER_01: Yes, yes, yes.
- 23:15SPEAKER_01: A reminder to slow down.
- 23:17SPEAKER_01: Yeah, just because tea's intentional like that.
- 23:19SPEAKER_01: It is you have to steep it, you know, or you have to wait for it.
- 23:23SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I mean, certain coffees, I guess you know that, but you know, that's their, you know, it's different.
- 23:29SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it doesn't have such a wide variety of healing aspects like tea does.
- 23:33SPEAKER_01: Um, because like you said, all the different herbs and everything.
- 23:37SPEAKER_01: So that's kind of yeah, it was a journey of just discovering and learning and then wanting to share it in more intentional ways.
- 23:45SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 23:45SPEAKER_01: Have you had something over the course of time that you've like over that span of time that you've like really surprised you to learn or come across in all the different like labs and stuff like that that you picked up?
- 23:58SPEAKER_01: I mean so many things.
- 23:59SPEAKER_01: Or like your favorite fact.
- 24:00SPEAKER_01: Plants are just so amazing.
- 24:03SPEAKER_01: Um so many things.
- 24:05SPEAKER_01: I guess one would be that lavender, you know, we think of as you know, aromatherapy and relaxing, but it actually is a pain reducer as well.
- 24:14SPEAKER_01: And I use it for crayons lavender on me.
- 24:18SPEAKER_01: For um PMS crayons lavender does help.
- 24:23SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 24:24SPEAKER_01: Because I think that's why they put it in a lot of rice packs and stuff, too.
- 24:27SPEAKER_01: You know, fast and all of that.
- 24:29SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it's one of my favorites.
- 24:31SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 24:32SPEAKER_00: Sweet, love it.
- 24:33SPEAKER_00: All right, so what's the most common misconception misconception that people have about herbal tea when they first experience what you're offering and what you have to teach them?
- 24:43SPEAKER_01: Um, I get a lot of questions, really basic, like how do you even use loose sleeves?
- 24:49SPEAKER_01: Um, there's sometimes an intimidation with it's not in a bag, what do I do with it?
- 24:55SPEAKER_01: So I mean, just teaching the basics of it's really simple.
- 24:58SPEAKER_01: Once you get it down, you know, get a steeper, or just throw it in a cup and um then just strain it.
- 25:04SPEAKER_01: Um, or the intimidation of feeling like you have to have so many herbs if you're wanting to like have a more restful sleep, or you know, you can use just one herb, but you don't have to have a blend of seven or ten things to feel like you're you know you're helping your system or supporting whatever you're going through.
- 25:23SPEAKER_01: It literally can be better just to start with one so that you know, okay, this is affecting me this way versus we have a blend, you don't know what's working.
- 25:32SPEAKER_01: What made you have a headache or you know, you don't know.
- 25:34SPEAKER_01: Or if you start a blend right off the bat and you don't like it, you're just gonna be like, I don't like any of you, I don't like teen.
- 25:39SPEAKER_01: I just want it to have sense.
- 25:41SPEAKER_01: So that's a good starting point for anybody that wants to get into teens.
- 25:45SPEAKER_01: Well, of course, if they get to sample teams, yeah, like a defest or whatnot, then sample teams.
- 25:50SPEAKER_01: Yeah, then they can find out what they like.
- 25:53SPEAKER_01: So I think that's a really good way to go about it and start if you're a newbies.
- 25:56SPEAKER_01: I mean, just like a lot of people are intimidated by news before.
- 25:59SPEAKER_01: I'm intimidated by powders, like like this doesn't look like this looks suspicious.
- 26:06SPEAKER_01: It's a powdery substance, it's green.
- 26:09SPEAKER_01: And I would say always keep trying because I've had it so many different pop-ups.
- 26:13SPEAKER_01: I remember this couple so vividly, they came up and she loves tea, and she was like, He does not.
- 26:20SPEAKER_01: And I had like three three different samples, and I was like, You gotta just try it.
- 26:24SPEAKER_01: You got to.
- 26:24SPEAKER_01: So he tried to and he looked at her and he was like, actually, and he bought two for himself.
- 26:31SPEAKER_01: I always say when someone comes up and was like, I don't like tea.
- 26:33SPEAKER_01: I was like, You just have not found the tea that you like.
- 26:35SPEAKER_01: Yeah, keep trying, keep trying.
- 26:37SPEAKER_00: Because there's so many, just you know, now that I think about it, that has been like I watched Ted Lasso, and this has been the one thing that kind of drives me a little bit crazy about Ted Lasso, just because I have experienced multiple teas before, and I know that there are a lot of teas to go.
- 26:55SPEAKER_00: And the fact that he's like, No, like he absolutely will not have the tea, or and he talks, he he just insists that he does not love tea or even like tea.
- 27:04SPEAKER_00: Yeah, like I always think about that.
- 27:06SPEAKER_00: I'm like, you know, there's there's gotta be something out there that you like.
- 27:11SPEAKER_00: There, not all tea is the same, right?
- 27:13SPEAKER_00: So at least I know enough to know that.
- 27:16SPEAKER_00: Yes, there's so many plants, so many plants.
- 27:18SPEAKER_00: And well, and I've never even really sat down and thought about all the things that can go into tea.
- 27:23SPEAKER_00: Like you were talking about just start adding roots, start adding herbs.
- 27:27SPEAKER_01: Like, I've never even make mushroom tea if you want.
- 27:31SPEAKER_01: You're crazy.
- 27:32SPEAKER_00: I'm just like, so I you know, I've seen the tea bags, I know you can get them on Amazon or anywhere, and I have one of those cage ball things you have to drop.
- 27:41SPEAKER_00: So you just put six, eight minutes, and then is that yeah?
- 27:44SPEAKER_01: Yeah, so I my favorite steeper is I have one that's it's a little ball on the end of this the metal stick, so I just turn the end so it opens I can use it as a scoop and just close it.
- 27:55SPEAKER_01: And then it's so much easier, you can use this to stir it around, and then it's easy to empty and clean.
- 28:00SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 28:00SPEAKER_01: So you just open it up and tap it on the track.
- 28:02SPEAKER_01: So you so sometimes you don't even need the bags?
- 28:04SPEAKER_01: Is that correct?
- 28:05SPEAKER_01: You don't need bags.
- 28:05SPEAKER_01: If you have loose leaf, you can just put it in a metal little the ball you're talking about.
- 28:09SPEAKER_01: It's a steeper ball.
- 28:10SPEAKER_01: You don't need a bag for that.
- 28:11SPEAKER_01: Just put it in there.
- 28:13SPEAKER_00: I have the tools.
- 28:15SPEAKER_00: I just need the knowledge.
- 28:18SPEAKER_00: And there we are.
- 28:19SPEAKER_01: Speaking of knowledge, so actually, what we're a lot of what we're talking about is actually herbal infusions, not really even tea.
- 28:26SPEAKER_01: Oh, wow.
- 28:27SPEAKER_01: Because a true tea is only if it's made with the Camellia Smensis plant.
- 28:32SPEAKER_01: Oh.
- 28:32SPEAKER_01: Which is green tea, black tea, white tea, oolong tea.
- 28:36SPEAKER_01: Those are all true teas.
- 28:37SPEAKER_01: So we're not drinking a true tea.
- 28:39SPEAKER_01: We're drinking an herbal infusion.
- 28:40SPEAKER_01: Oh, I love that.
- 28:42SPEAKER_01: I've never heard of that.
- 28:43SPEAKER_01: I love it.
- 28:44SPEAKER_01: But we call it tea because it looks like we think of it.
- 28:47SPEAKER_01: If you say herbal infusion, people might get the wrong idea.
- 28:50SPEAKER_01: That is funny.
- 28:51SPEAKER_01: I actually brought, I've stopped and got a tea.
- 28:53SPEAKER_01: I don't really count that as tea.
- 28:56SPEAKER_01: That's a black tea.
- 28:58SPEAKER_01: Yes, yes, it's just cool.
- 29:00SPEAKER_01: Every time I get to like fast food tea, I was like, this is not real tea.
- 29:04SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 29:04SPEAKER_01: Because I guess I'm used to herbal infusions.
- 29:07SPEAKER_01: I don't know what they make, what they use.
- 29:09SPEAKER_01: Probably like folders or something.
- 29:11SPEAKER_01: It's not like a syrup or something.
- 29:13SPEAKER_01: I don't know.
- 29:15SPEAKER_01: Probably a powdered version.
- 29:17SPEAKER_00: Probably.
- 29:18SPEAKER_00: You know, it's not just good stuff, right?
- 29:21SPEAKER_00: No.
- 29:21SPEAKER_00: Okay, well, I think that's a fun thing to talk about.
- 29:24SPEAKER_00: Like, maybe like when I was I when I was thinking about drinking the tea, I think also about hydration.
- 29:29SPEAKER_00: Like, I know if you're drinking taco, yeah, it dehydrates you a lot of the time.
- 29:33SPEAKER_00: But what what is are there hydration effects when it comes to drinking tea versus coffee, probably?
- 29:38SPEAKER_01: Oh, yeah, definitely.
- 29:39SPEAKER_01: I mean, depending on what kind of herbs, like green tea, black tea, they have caffeine in them, they're oxidized.
- 29:45SPEAKER_01: So um, you've got to, you know, be mindful of that.
- 29:48SPEAKER_01: But there's a lot of um tea blends that are helpful for your hydration and they're mineral rich, you know.
- 29:55SPEAKER_01: So, so definitely like Tulsi or nettle, you know, those are really great and helpful.
- 30:02SPEAKER_01: Even the turmeric we're drinking today.
- 30:04SPEAKER_01: I mean, it has apple pieces in it.
- 30:05SPEAKER_01: Oh, yeah.
- 30:06SPEAKER_01: Yeah, we love that.
- 30:08SPEAKER_01: It feels like it's more hydrating.
- 30:09SPEAKER_01: So definitely in the summer I do, I do drink more tea because I'm just always so like dehydrated by the sun.
- 30:15SPEAKER_01: Yeah, just like flavored water.
- 30:18SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
- 30:19SPEAKER_01: Exactly.
- 30:20SPEAKER_01: I love it.
- 30:21SPEAKER_00: So, tea culture in a lot of places is transactional.
- 30:25SPEAKER_00: So you grab and go.
- 30:27SPEAKER_00: You've built something that feels more like kind of a gathering or a ritual type situation.
- 30:33SPEAKER_00: How intentional was that?
- 30:35SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it was really intentional because, like I mentioned about trying to find a place that I could go to and just hang out and grab a cup of tea.
- 30:45SPEAKER_01: I really wasn't finding that like educational or that conversational piece around it.
- 30:49SPEAKER_01: So I really wanted it to feel like you can ask questions, you can be curious, and we can have a conversation about the tea or the herbs or what you're looking for while you're grabbing some loose leaf or while you're sampling, and we can talk about that.
- 31:03SPEAKER_01: I get so many questions and what would be good for this, or or I'm trying to get better in this aspect.
- 31:09SPEAKER_01: Um, so I I really did want the educational piece to be a part planted tea in that way.
- 31:15SPEAKER_00: I think that's so important.
- 31:17SPEAKER_00: I mean, just like what we're doing right now.
- 31:19SPEAKER_00: Like I'm about to switch up an entire routine.
- 31:22SPEAKER_00: Yeah, just a little bit of knowledge.
- 31:24SPEAKER_00: I know how to use a little metal ball.
- 31:26SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 31:27SPEAKER_00: Just give me a thing.
- 31:28SPEAKER_01: Don't go work.
- 31:30SPEAKER_01: I hate you flu.
- 31:32SPEAKER_01: Don't come out.
- 31:33SPEAKER_01: I was actually, I've been on this like tea lounge tour.
- 31:37SPEAKER_01: Wow, and I've traveled.
- 31:39SPEAKER_01: I went to California, I went to a tea lounge, I've gone to one in Oklahoma.
- 31:43SPEAKER_01: There's one in Atlanta I really want to go to.
- 31:46SPEAKER_01: So I'm just seeing, you know, how they have created.
- 31:49SPEAKER_01: And the one in actually Kansas City that I most recently went to, she first it's newer, it's only like a couple months opened, and I loved it, TNT House.
- 31:59SPEAKER_01: But she um originally did not even want to have to go cups, like only like mugs.
- 32:06SPEAKER_01: Yeah, she only wanted you to come in and enjoy it and sit and be intentional.
- 32:11SPEAKER_01: But you do have to, you know, do what your customers, you know, react to to the market, and so she does offer to go now.
- 32:20SPEAKER_01: But she had that intention of I want you to enjoy the tea and not grab it and rush and go.
- 32:25SPEAKER_00: Yes, that is so funny because that is.
- 32:27SPEAKER_00: I remember back when Reverie Roasters started here in Wichita, and it was the opposite.
- 32:32SPEAKER_00: They wanted to be known as a roasters and not a coffee shop.
- 32:36SPEAKER_00: And the customers ended up saying, you know, you're you're basically you're gonna be a coffee shop.
- 32:41SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and now they are, now they've expanded.
- 32:43SPEAKER_00: Yeah, oh yeah, and the reverie is huge now, and it is like I know that if I go to Reverie at a certain time of day during the week, I'm not gonna be able to work because there's gonna be so many people that are there networking.
- 32:56SPEAKER_00: Yeah, uh, it's just how it is.
- 32:58SPEAKER_00: It's definitely a sit and linger and you know, enjoy the community type of place.
- 33:03SPEAKER_00: So it's wild how that happens.
- 33:04SPEAKER_01: Yeah, you gotta find that little balance.
- 33:06SPEAKER_01: But they she does amazing stuff there, and I love it.
- 33:10SPEAKER_01: So that's really the intentional um intentionality of bringing the education to to what you're doing, and I think that makes it taste better too.
- 33:22SPEAKER_00: They're actually tasting it instead of you know, grab and go and do my thing, yeah.
- 33:26SPEAKER_01: Yeah, or at least the coming, even if it is grab and go, but if it's coming from a place where someone does care about their customers and you have those good intentions, I think that that really does like add to it.
- 33:35SPEAKER_00: But I think yeah, you know, it does.
- 33:38SPEAKER_00: I think you're right, too.
- 33:39SPEAKER_00: So, what does it look like when someone becomes part of your tea community versus just a customer?
- 33:44SPEAKER_01: Yeah, so my well, my newsletter, my community.
- 33:48SPEAKER_01: I love it, love it, hello fun.
- 33:52SPEAKER_01: I share a little bit more about just the behind the scenes of oh, just like the one of the last, I think, little blog posts in there that I shared was like a stack of herbal books that I had gotten from my grandpa, and just how you know that type of knowledge was passed down generation to generation.
- 34:13SPEAKER_01: And it seems like it's kind of a skipped some generations, or we're not sharing, you know, that information like that.
- 34:19SPEAKER_01: And and just remembering, you know, that we used to go to our um herbal cabinet or in the backyard to grab things that we needed.
- 34:27SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 34:27SPEAKER_01: Um, so I share a little bit of that, and uh, my education workshops, uh-huh, of course, are part of that conversation, and then just being able to ask questions and learn together and and do all those good things.
- 34:39SPEAKER_01: So I think that it becomes more of just like we're helping each other, yeah.
- 34:43SPEAKER_01: And versus just, oh, you need that, and you go, like it's uh it's really nice because uh some this this lady came back and I've got some of the medicinal green again for me, and I remembered her from a couple of weeks ago before at the pop-up, and I was like, Oh, you wanted that for your digestion.
- 35:00SPEAKER_01: How are things going?
- 35:01SPEAKER_01: She's like, it's helpful, it's helping me.
- 35:03SPEAKER_01: I love that.
- 35:04SPEAKER_01: That is wonderful.
- 35:05SPEAKER_01: And so it it's really it's really great to be able to share and then check in, yeah, and um yeah, and then share that story and on with other people so someone else comes in, or if she finds someone that has a similar issue to you then, go here, get this tea, talk to Mila.
- 35:21SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 35:22SPEAKER_01: Oh gosh, oh that too.
- 35:25SPEAKER_01: Homeopathic healing is my favorite.
- 35:27SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it's like I agree, it's preventative, it's helpful, it's awesome.
- 35:32SPEAKER_01: I love it.
- 35:33SPEAKER_00: I'd love it.
- 35:34SPEAKER_00: I'm learning to love it a lot more, and then I'm learning so much more about it.
- 35:38SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 35:39SPEAKER_00: Rachel's my first friend that I had that was very much all about that stuff.
- 35:44SPEAKER_00: Every gift was an oil learner.
- 35:47SPEAKER_00: I know it's so true.
- 35:49SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and I love that.
- 35:50SPEAKER_00: And so I've learned a lot from Rachel, and now I'm learning a lot from you.
- 35:53SPEAKER_00: But I love to learn too.
- 35:56SPEAKER_00: Growing the better, we're growing our people.
- 35:58SPEAKER_00: Absolutely.
- 35:59SPEAKER_00: So you touched on your workshops.
- 36:01SPEAKER_00: Let's let's talk a little bit about those.
- 36:03SPEAKER_00: So tell us about the workshops you're running right now.
- 36:06SPEAKER_00: What can people expect to walk away with?
- 36:08SPEAKER_01: So the next one I have coming up is actually the day after T Fest on the 13th on the Sunday.
- 36:15SPEAKER_01: Um, we'll be making Fire Cider.
- 36:17SPEAKER_01: Oh, yeah.
- 36:18SPEAKER_01: I didn't want to make it.
- 36:19SPEAKER_01: It's time to make fire cider.
- 36:20SPEAKER_01: Yes, it is.
- 36:21SPEAKER_01: I actually just wrote my grocery list for it yesterday.
- 36:23SPEAKER_01: Yes, it's time to make it.
- 36:26SPEAKER_01: Not just fire cider.
- 36:27SPEAKER_01: I don't even know.
- 36:29SPEAKER_01: So it's a oxmol, which is actually it's just a bunch of herbs, roots, and vegetables, and then you soak it and infuse it in vinegar for um four to six weeks, and then you strain it, and you're left with a mineral medicine.
- 36:45SPEAKER_01: And you'll need it for the spawn since you always get sick.
- 36:47SPEAKER_01: I do always.
- 36:48SPEAKER_01: I was actually thinking of you too, when I get a shot of it a day during the winter or you know, a couple more couple shots of it.
- 36:56SPEAKER_01: If you're feeling, you know, something's coming, or if you've been around someone, and it's just really immune-boosting, it's fire cider, so it's warming into your digestion.
- 37:05SPEAKER_01: And oh, your throat hurts.
- 37:07SPEAKER_01: It's really a really helpful in that way, and it's just a traditional herbal medicinal product.
- 37:13SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it's in every grain witch's cookbook.
- 37:16SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 37:17SPEAKER_01: I love that.
- 37:18SPEAKER_01: So we'll be making that.
- 37:19SPEAKER_01: Um September 3rd.
- 37:21SPEAKER_01: There's two times for that.
- 37:22SPEAKER_01: September 3rd and then October, or September 13th, and then October 3rd.
- 37:26SPEAKER_01: Um, do people need to bring their own jar?
- 37:28SPEAKER_01: No, nothing.
- 37:29SPEAKER_01: The the the registration, you'll be provided with your jar, all the ingredients will be ready for you.
- 37:35SPEAKER_01: Um, you'll get a chop it up, we'll get a talk about what ingredients I brought because there's different variations.
- 37:42SPEAKER_01: Um, and we like last year, not last year, but the year before when I did it, someone was sharing to know what their family recipe is and what they usually include.
- 37:51SPEAKER_01: Um and so it's good just to hear and share how you use it in your household or your family, or if you're new to it, how you could think about using it.
- 37:59SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and then I send the recipe off with you all.
- 38:01SPEAKER_01: And so, yeah, if you get a leave with your own fireside or to sit on the cabinet and let infuse for a couple weeks and then it's ready to go.
- 38:10SPEAKER_01: So this is the perfect time to make it because you need it to infuse for a few weeks for it to be ready.
- 38:14SPEAKER_01: Yeah, so it's ready by official fall.
- 38:16SPEAKER_01: Yes, yeah, fall.
- 38:18SPEAKER_01: When flu season comes, so you're ready.
- 38:19SPEAKER_01: Yeah and prepared.
- 38:21SPEAKER_00: So, how do people find like where can people register for the workshops?
- 38:26SPEAKER_01: Yeah, so on my website, planint shop.com, um, or my Facebook page, Planned Tea Shop.
- 38:31SPEAKER_01: Uh, there uh it's both shared on on those regularly or Instagram as well.
- 38:36SPEAKER_01: Okay, awesome.
- 38:37SPEAKER_01: Very cool.
- 38:38SPEAKER_01: That sounds so much.
- 38:39SPEAKER_01: You might see us there if I'm in chat.
- 38:40SPEAKER_01: I know.
- 38:41SPEAKER_01: I looked at Rachel, like, uh funny that came up.
- 38:45SPEAKER_01: What a full cycle.
- 38:46SPEAKER_01: Because I literally wrote my grocery list just yesterday for everything I needed to get.
- 38:51SPEAKER_01: And that's why I was like, where do you get raw turmeric?
- 38:54SPEAKER_01: Because I want to add raw turmeric in mine this year.
- 38:56SPEAKER_01: Yes, yeah.
- 38:57SPEAKER_01: That's so cool.
- 38:58SPEAKER_00: So so people have all experiences of taking this.
- 39:03SPEAKER_00: Oh, yeah.
- 39:03SPEAKER_01: Beginners never made it before, you don't really know what it is, or if you have a tradition, like someone said, Oh, I she makes it yearly.
- 39:11SPEAKER_01: Um, but she was like, This would be fun.
- 39:13SPEAKER_01: So I think I'm gonna come here instead of you know doing it on my own this year.
- 39:17SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 39:18SPEAKER_00: And where do you host these?
- 39:20SPEAKER_01: The workshop.
- 39:21SPEAKER_01: So this one, these two will be at the old Espresso Tagogo, which is just across the street from Master Park, right there on St.
- 39:29SPEAKER_01: Francis and Douglas, right there in the corner.
- 39:31SPEAKER_00: Cool, perfect.
- 39:32SPEAKER_00: I love that place under the big disco ball.
- 39:34SPEAKER_01: Yeah, where still the tea was.
- 39:36SPEAKER_00: Yeah, that was such a fun pop-up.
- 39:38SPEAKER_00: That was so much fun.
- 39:39SPEAKER_00: My I brought my sister-in-law and my niece to that, and we just had a great time.
- 39:44SPEAKER_00: We were doing all kinds of girly stuff that day.
- 39:47SPEAKER_00: Okay, let's get down to Tea Fest.
- 39:49SPEAKER_00: It's coming up September 12th.
- 39:52SPEAKER_00: What is it?
- 39:53SPEAKER_00: And what made you want to bring something like that to Woods Fly?
- 39:56SPEAKER_01: So I've thought about wanting to do something like this for a couple years now, but just, you know, it wasn't the right time, or it was just like, what, how, you know.
- 40:06SPEAKER_01: And then after spill the tea, and it was such a success, and I was just like, I love it, I want to do it again.
- 40:14SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that's right.
- 40:15SPEAKER_01: Do it.
- 40:16SPEAKER_01: And then I just looked across the street and was like, Napster Park.
- 40:20SPEAKER_02: Right there again, right in front of my face.
- 40:23SPEAKER_01: So um, that's where it kind of came and grew from.
- 40:26SPEAKER_01: And then I actually have downtown Wichita and the Wichita Area Arts Council and Festivize TT are all sponsors.
- 40:33SPEAKER_01: So really helped me make it come to fruition um with funding.
- 40:39SPEAKER_01: And so we'll have over 20, about 25 vendors will be there.
- 40:44SPEAKER_01: That's a million events.
- 40:45SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 40:46SPEAKER_01: And so uh quite a bit.
- 40:48SPEAKER_01: I think on one at one side of the park, there will be all like the tea and herbal vendors.
- 40:54SPEAKER_01: Um have like tea products or herbal products, you know, lotions or oils, um or tea.
- 40:59SPEAKER_01: And then on the other side, there will be more of the like just wellness-oriented vendors, like the Phoenix will be there with crafted, crafted, created, and she has syrups and cookies because you have to have sweet treats with tea.
- 41:17SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and then just some artists for like their pottery, handmade pottery, so searching.
- 41:23SPEAKER_01: That sounds like such a wholesome event.
- 41:25SPEAKER_01: It really does.
- 41:25SPEAKER_00: Yeah, a little bit of an artisan market twitch too.
- 41:29SPEAKER_00: So that's really cool.
- 41:29SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and then right in the middle of the park we'll have a community art installation, so kind of a play on Skill the T community tree wall we have, or the roots wall will have leaves of Wichita.
- 41:41SPEAKER_01: Oh my god.
- 41:42SPEAKER_01: So everyone can paint a leaf and leave like some inspiration or encouragement for Wichita, and then of course a little painting station for the kiddos.
- 41:49SPEAKER_01: Cute.
- 41:49SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and then live music at 1 p.m.
- 41:52SPEAKER_01: So a lot of food trucks, of course, Seattle, Kintos, Thai food, and then tea kings, barbecue food.
- 41:58SPEAKER_01: So I think we covered everything.
- 42:01SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it's awesome.
- 42:03SPEAKER_01: Food drinks, painting, yeah.
- 42:07SPEAKER_01: Yes, a lot of stuff going on.
- 42:08SPEAKER_01: Yeah, so what time of day is that?
- 42:11SPEAKER_01: So yeah, September third, September 12th, Saturday from 11 to 3.
- 42:16SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 42:16SPEAKER_01: Uh so come hungry right around lunchtime.
- 42:19SPEAKER_01: And yeah, you could, you know, come in.
- 42:22SPEAKER_01: The first 50 that come to the planted tea shop booth will get a passport, a TFS passport.
- 42:28SPEAKER_01: So then you can go to all of the booths and get a stamp, and then you can turn that back into the booth for a prize.
- 42:34SPEAKER_01: We've got some really good prizes, like tickets to Botanica, some painting, like number by painting, t-shirts, like just a bunch of dicks over it all.
- 42:43SPEAKER_01: I know.
- 42:44SPEAKER_01: This is so well put together.
- 42:46SPEAKER_01: I love that.
- 42:48SPEAKER_01: Heck yeah.
- 42:50SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 42:50SPEAKER_01: Oh my gosh, my mom's maybe gonna be in town that day.
- 42:53SPEAKER_01: Oh, she would be in the town.
- 42:54SPEAKER_01: Because my sister-in-law uh baby shower is the 13th.
- 42:57SPEAKER_01: So actually, I probably can't go to the 13th Sunday thing, but I just remembered that.
- 43:02SPEAKER_01: Yes, giving your mom's a tea pack.
- 43:05SPEAKER_01: Saturday, that would be great.
- 43:06SPEAKER_01: You guys don't have plans.
- 43:08SPEAKER_01: Yes, she taught me herbs.
- 43:09SPEAKER_01: So thanks, mom.
- 43:14SPEAKER_00: Yeah, that'll be nice.
- 43:16SPEAKER_00: All right, so now it's time to talk about farm and art market.
- 43:20SPEAKER_00: Oh, yes, and actually, is that it?
- 43:22SPEAKER_00: Talk to us about those.
- 43:24SPEAKER_00: And how does that tie into what you're building?
- 43:26SPEAKER_01: Yeah, so I this is my first season at the Old Town Farm and Art Market, and it has been amazing.
- 43:33SPEAKER_01: It's such a wholesome community of small businesses and the vendors are just so helpful.
- 43:39SPEAKER_01: I've learned so, so, so much by being there and like looking at my neighbors, like, oh, I need to get that.
- 43:44SPEAKER_01: Okay, where did you get that?
- 43:46SPEAKER_01: And just so helpful of of what I need to think about, you know, having like your own little mini mini shop once a week Saturday mornings in Old Town Square from eight to eight to noon.
- 43:57SPEAKER_01: Um I'm there most Saturdays.
- 43:59SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 43:59SPEAKER_01: You can find me there.
- 44:01SPEAKER_01: And it's just it's it's amazing.
- 44:03SPEAKER_01: Um such good vendors out there.
- 44:05SPEAKER_01: I always leave with something.
- 44:08SPEAKER_01: And I know I'm always like, okay, I'm not gonna spend all my money today.
- 44:11SPEAKER_01: And then I go around and I always get something.
- 44:14SPEAKER_01: So like the eggs, I get I always get my eggs from there.
- 44:18SPEAKER_01: And then, you know, this just little things here and there.
- 44:22SPEAKER_00: I love the farmer's market.
- 44:23SPEAKER_00: It's really grown over the last several years, too.
- 44:26SPEAKER_00: It is huge now.
- 44:27SPEAKER_01: Yeah, because it used to be just in that little area, but now it's like both sides of the street on Rock Island and Mosley as well.
- 44:34SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it's it's crazy.
- 44:36SPEAKER_00: It is absolutely crazy.
- 44:37SPEAKER_00: A lot of times, so I get my hair, well, we get our hair done with Jennifer Color Therapy.
- 44:43SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 44:44SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it's sponsor.
- 44:46SPEAKER_00: Some Saturdays though, when I'm driving by, because I usually try to get my appointment around 10 o'clock, and I'm driving by, and oh, it is so incredibly active down there.
- 44:55SPEAKER_00: It is incredible to see.
- 44:56SPEAKER_00: And then usually when I'm leaving is when everyone's tear tearing down.
- 44:59SPEAKER_00: I'm driving back the other way down three street.
- 45:01SPEAKER_00: I'm like, oh my gosh, this is really it's it's fascinating how much it's grown.
- 45:07SPEAKER_01: Yes, and it's new people like every week.
- 45:10SPEAKER_01: I mean, there's this, you know, some of the same customers come through, but it's new people with new questions, and I get to learn so much about what they're looking for and think of other blends to make.
- 45:20SPEAKER_01: And and it's I love being a part of that community.
- 45:24SPEAKER_00: It's really cool.
- 45:25SPEAKER_00: I am so my son, my younger son, Nathan, uh used to want to go almost every week.
- 45:32SPEAKER_00: He was so obsessed with the honey vendors, he loved those honey straws so yeah, that makes sense.
- 45:37SPEAKER_00: Oh my gosh, the amount of times that we would go to.
- 45:39SPEAKER_00: I think this started during the pandemic maybe a little above us, but he used to just love it so much.
- 45:44SPEAKER_00: Now he wants to sleep in because you know, he's a teenager, a teenager in their life.
- 45:49SPEAKER_00: They love to sleep in.
- 45:51SPEAKER_00: Oh my gosh.
- 45:51SPEAKER_00: But I, you know, I kind of miss having that.
- 45:53SPEAKER_00: Um let's go, let's go.
- 45:55SPEAKER_00: Yeah, let's go, let's go.
- 45:56SPEAKER_00: Because when I drive by, I'm like, oh my gosh, this is why why do I never think to do this?
- 46:01SPEAKER_00: My prompt isn't here anymore.
- 46:02SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yes.
- 46:05SPEAKER_00: I mean, Nathan to come to this to the farmer's market with me again is so much fun.
- 46:09SPEAKER_00: Um, okay, for someone who's intimidated by tea herbs, what's one easy way to start incorporating them into daily life?
- 46:18SPEAKER_01: I would say pick a time or a ritual that you could incorporate it.
- 46:23SPEAKER_01: If you know the mornings, you have a good routine to see if you could add it there.
- 46:28SPEAKER_01: Or your evenings if you're, you know, wanting to get more relaxed.
- 46:32SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 46:32SPEAKER_01: Turn, get the lights low, and sit down with a cup of tea.
- 46:36SPEAKER_01: So try to think of a time where it'd be easy for you to incorporate it.
- 46:40SPEAKER_01: That's what I would suggest.
- 46:42SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 46:42SPEAKER_01: Uh just to try it out and see how you like it.
- 46:45SPEAKER_00: Nice.
- 46:46SPEAKER_00: I love that.
- 46:46SPEAKER_00: I think that's exactly what I'm gonna start doing.
- 46:49SPEAKER_00: I am definitely excited about the preventative measures of this, and you know, and of course, uh, firesider or something.
- 46:56SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yes.
- 46:57SPEAKER_00: Okay, yeah, I've learned so much today.
- 47:00SPEAKER_00: I will be a teenager.
- 47:01SPEAKER_00: Get your nose pad.
- 47:02SPEAKER_00: Here we go.
- 47:04SPEAKER_00: Um, I'm so excited.
- 47:06SPEAKER_00: Um, it's been fantastic hosting you today.
- 47:09SPEAKER_00: So why don't you tell people where they can find you and plant and tea, and of course, our lovely uh mulberry gallery.
- 47:16SPEAKER_00: Yes, and thank them for hosting us.
- 47:18SPEAKER_01: Yes, I love Mulberry.
- 47:20SPEAKER_01: I've actually done a First Friday with them, and we did a little um, it paired so well with Dominique.
- 47:25SPEAKER_01: She was doing a Alice in Wonderland theme.
- 47:28SPEAKER_01: I love that.
- 47:30SPEAKER_01: Yes, she was painting Alice in Wonderland, and then we decided we would do the tea, and we did it over in the little area and had the lights and the color.
- 47:39SPEAKER_01: It was amazing.
- 47:40SPEAKER_01: Oh, that sounds perfect.
- 47:42SPEAKER_01: So I love mulberry.
- 47:43SPEAKER_01: Um, but yeah, you can find them on their their Facebook social media mulberry art mulberry art gallery.
- 47:49SPEAKER_01: Okay, um, and then for Planted Tea Shop, I'm on Facebook, Instagram, uh, and that's Planted Tea Shop.
- 47:55SPEAKER_01: And then PlantedT Shop.com is my website.
- 47:58SPEAKER_01: And you can, I am in a few retail spaces.
- 48:02SPEAKER_01: Um, like I do have some blends here at Mulberry.
- 48:04SPEAKER_01: Um, and then Sunflower Cafe and Collective on the west side.
- 48:08SPEAKER_01: I have some blends there.
- 48:09SPEAKER_01: And she just started serving two of the tea.
- 48:11SPEAKER_01: So you can go in there and get the turmeric island or the ease into it.
- 48:15SPEAKER_01: Oh, nice.
- 48:16SPEAKER_01: Get it, grab a glass of tea.
- 48:18SPEAKER_01: Um, but yeah, so just check me out on social media and the website, and I post all of the workshops or the events that I'm doing there.
- 48:26SPEAKER_01: If you have any questions, I'm always open to have a conversation about what's going on with within the tea and herbal world.
- 48:33SPEAKER_01: It's amazing.
- 48:34SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I'm I'm still blown away by how much I've learned today.
- 48:37SPEAKER_00: This has been so much fun.
- 48:39SPEAKER_00: This has been so much fun.
- 48:40SPEAKER_00: So thank you again.
- 48:41SPEAKER_01: So everything you've said, I'm just like, oh, yeah, let's talk about that more.
- 48:45SPEAKER_01: Let's talk about that more.
