- 0:07experience of alcoholic. If you know of anyone is
- 0:11struggling with alcohol, please call Alcoholics Anonymous on
- 0:151300 double 22222 or check out the website aaorg.org dot AU and
- 0:27I'll just do the preamble of Alcoholics Anonymous.
- 0:30Alcoholics Anonymous is a fellowship of men and women who
- 0:34share the experience, strengthen up with each other that they may
- 0:38solve their common problems and help others to recover from
- 0:41alcoholism. The only requirement for
- 0:43membership is a desire to stop drinking.
- 0:46We are no dues or fees for a membership.
- 0:49We are self supporting through our own contributions, is not
- 0:53allied with any sex denomination, politics or
- 0:55organization, does not wish to engage in any controversy,
- 0:59neither endorses or oppose any causes.
- 1:02Our primary purpose is to stay sober and other Alcoholics
- 1:06achieve sobriety. Hi, my name is Heather, I'm an
- 1:09alcoholic and I've been asked to share my story today.
- 1:16I always find it a little bit difficult about my story because
- 1:22I guess I have two parts. I have the part, you know, when
- 1:24I first was introduced to Alcoholics Anonymous, I was in
- 1:31my early 30s and I moved to Cairns to start a new
- 1:36relationship and had a, a breakdown And through through
- 1:42that breakdown ended up in a psych ward and it was suggested
- 1:46that I get some support. And so I was reading a book at
- 1:52the time, Women Who Love too Much.
- 1:54And part of at the back of the book, it suggested another
- 1:57fellowship. And so I went along and there
- 2:01was a girl there and she suggested that I come with her
- 2:05to an AM meeting and, and to be honest, I think I went thinking
- 2:09that I could help my partner at the time.
- 2:11And anyway, I went to this meeting and there were three
- 2:15young girls there who shared their story, you know, and
- 2:19basically their story was, you know, what happened when they
- 2:22drank, drank. And, and I identified with some
- 2:27of that stuff and thought, oh, is there alcoholic?
- 2:29Maybe I am too. And so for me at that time, I
- 2:33think I had a suspicion, but at some point an IA member came up
- 2:39to me and said, you know, Are you sure you're alcoholic?
- 2:42Because I've never heard your story.
- 2:44And it wasn't until I relapsed and I went back out that and and
- 2:49came back in that I was able to say to him, the reason I never
- 2:55remembered my story was because most of the time I would black
- 2:59out and people would tell me what I did and I could not
- 3:03believe I thought they were lying because that wasn't who I
- 3:07thought I was. I thought I was this nice girl
- 3:10that didn't do the things I did when I drank.
- 3:13And so, you know, my guilt and shame was thought was that I
- 3:18would just completely go into denial and didn't want to
- 3:22believe that that that was the truth.
- 3:24And but one of the things that happened when I did relapse and
- 3:29what, you know, I picked up the drink was that they talk about
- 3:34in a a that, you know, experience that ease and
- 3:36comfort. And, you know, for me, being
- 3:39sober, especially the first time was like doing time, you know, I
- 3:43felt like I was trying to be something that I was.
- 3:48It was impossible to be. I was trying not to drink, you
- 3:51know. But I, you know, for me, part of
- 3:54drinking alcoholism is having an obsession.
- 3:57So although I was trying not to drink, I was obsessed in my mind
- 4:02with thinking that maybe one day I could.
- 4:05And, and so when when I finally picked up a drink, I
- 4:09experienced, you know, that relief that came from drink from
- 4:13alcohol and, and went on for nearly another nine years.
- 4:18And, and most of that second time around was I would control
- 4:22it. So and which was exhausting.
- 4:24I was trying to control drinking.
- 4:26And by this time I moved from Cairns to Townsville with three
- 4:32young children. And, and then eventually my, my
- 4:38kids were growing up and, and I didn't know, you know, like for
- 4:42me, part of drinking was because I didn't know, didn't know how
- 4:46to deal with myself as a parent because I wanted to be this
- 4:51parent that, you know, got up and took her kids to school and
- 4:55made the lunches and, and was the good mother.
- 4:58But most of the time I found it exhausting.
- 5:02I didn't, you know, like I didn't want to, I didn't want to
- 5:04be looking after my kids, but I didn't want to be being, you
- 5:11know, like the idea of being, say a housewife or something,
- 5:14Just I, I didn't want to be it. I just wanted to be someone that
- 5:17could go out and party and have a good time.
- 5:19And so I resented, you know, I guess what was my idea of
- 5:26normality? And so like I said, I eventually
- 5:30picked up a drink. By this time, my kids were older
- 5:33and some of my kids ended up, you know, that they were
- 5:37starting to do those things themselves.
- 5:39And, and at some point I moved back to Adelaide because it will
- 5:45actually, one of my kids has come back to Adelaide.
- 5:47And so I thought I'd come back to Adelaide and catch up with
- 5:51her. And, and through that, I found
- 5:56myself back in these rooms and it wasn't something I intended
- 6:00to do. You know, I, I thought that I
- 6:04tried sobriety and I tried a A and it didn't work.
- 6:07But the thing for me was that my emotions and you know how I like
- 6:15I was erratic and one of the things I'd learned is that, you
- 6:19know, a A seemed to, to stop that.
- 6:23So, you know, so I came back to a A and, and I, as I said, I
- 6:30didn't really want to be here. I didn't, you know, I guess
- 6:33after, you know, because I had had picked up a drink, that
- 6:37obsession was really strong. And, you know, I didn't know
- 6:41whether I could stop. I certainly didn't know whether
- 6:44I could get any, you know, feel different.
- 6:48And so I would just go to meetings and, you know, it's
- 6:53just the next meeting. And, and when I wasn't doing
- 6:56meetings, I, because I didn't know how to deal with free time,
- 7:00I would walk a lot. I would try and find things to
- 7:05keep me occupied and, and just kept doing meetings and, and I
- 7:11did that for a while and, and I still didn't feel, I didn't feel
- 7:18very different in some ways. And you know, I guess for me,
- 7:25there was a lot of things from my past that I had to slowly
- 7:31like I had to slowly thought out.
- 7:33And you know, the problem with drinking is that, you know,
- 7:39because I'm, I'm drinking and I'm behaving in ways that I
- 7:42don't want to be behaving. I believe that I those things
- 7:47kind of become emotional things that I've got to, you know, at
- 7:50some point go back and revisit and deal with.
- 7:53And, and so that took me a long time.
- 7:55And yeah, so I, I guess what I'm saying is, you know, for a
- 8:02while, that's all I did was I went to meetings.
- 8:04But one of the things that like they talk about in a a is that
- 8:08it's not just about meetings. There's a, a 12 step program,
- 8:12which is the steps. And I, for me, the steps seem to
- 8:18be like, I never really understood them, you know, and
- 8:21definitely one of the problems with the steps is that they
- 8:24talked about God. And because of my, my childhood
- 8:29and the things that had happened in the past, the, the thought of
- 8:33God just was like, I didn't want to borrow of it.
- 8:36And I thought that it was a really, you know, somehow I
- 8:39thought even though they said it wasn't a religious program, I
- 8:42thought deep down that possibly it was.
- 8:45And so I had a lot of problems with that.
- 8:47But at about 13 years where I hadn't picked up a drink, but I
- 8:52was still, I still had that obsession.
- 8:54I was still, you know, constantly thinking, you know, I
- 8:58still think about drinking and thinking that I was, it was
- 9:01never going to be any different. I got to a place where I believe
- 9:05that I completely got to that jumping off point where I had to
- 9:10do something different. And, and some things happened at
- 9:15that time. There was a guy in the
- 9:17fellowship and he was coming to a meeting that I was coming to
- 9:20and he would always share about being a recovered alcoholic.
- 9:25And, and that, you know, the solution was in the book.
- 9:29And I kind of, to be honest, I thought that if you, you were
- 9:34recovered from alcohol that you could drink successfully.
- 9:38You know, you could drink like normal people, but I could go
- 9:40out and have a drink and nothing would happen.
- 9:42But what I understand today is that, you know, we talk about
- 9:47alcoholism as a seemingly seemingly hopeless condition of
- 9:52mind, body and spirit. And, and I certainly was in that
- 9:57place. And, and so, yeah, for me, the
- 10:01steps became the solution where I was able to admit that, you
- 10:07know, I can't do this on my own because I, I guess because
- 10:10again, because of where I'd come from, I had a lot of resentments
- 10:14and a lot of, you know, ideas about being dependent on
- 10:19anybody. I thought that dependence meant
- 10:22that I was needy and I was weak and, and those were all the
- 10:26things I thought about myself and I thought they were a bad
- 10:29thing. And I didn't want to be like
- 10:30that. I wanted to be a really, you
- 10:32know, like, I suppose growing up in the 80s, nineties, it was all
- 10:37about women's live and being a strong independent woman that
- 10:41doesn't need anybody. And so to reconcile that and
- 10:45learn to, for me to become dependent on, on God, who I,
- 10:51which is what I believe today is that that just seems completely
- 10:58I, I, I sort of say almost like it felt like someone kicking me
- 11:02in the gut of me coming out fighting because I found that
- 11:06just, I can't think of the word, but you know, I was repulsed by
- 11:10it. And, and today that's different.
- 11:13Like I, you know, I don't see a, a as religious.
- 11:17I just see that as, you know, that I don't have to do this
- 11:20stuff on my own, that I have, have something that looks after
- 11:24me and takes care of me. And, and my life today is, is so
- 11:29different. You know, like the things that
- 11:32I've gone through in recovery have at times been scary.
- 11:38I mean, I've had kids in active addiction and I've had to, you
- 11:43know, let go of them, like let go of trying to make them
- 11:47different or want them to be different.
- 11:50And, and yet, you know, today my kids are all doing really well
- 11:54and they've been able to turn their lives around through.
- 11:56No, really not much help from me in the past.
- 12:01I mean, I helped them today. But, you know, at times it's
- 12:04just being able to trust in something that, again, I, you
- 12:09know, I don't actually understand, but it gives me
- 12:13comfort and. And yeah, you know, I was the
- 12:19person that did not like I, I didn't like who I was.
- 12:23You know, like I grew up always fantasizing about being somebody
- 12:28different. You know, like, if only I was
- 12:29rich or if only I was better looking or, you know, a
- 12:35different weight or, you know, which I, I, today I understand
- 12:39as those were all the external things that I thought that if
- 12:43those things were different, then I would be happy.
- 12:46And today I, I understand that happiness is just a byproduct of
- 12:51being OK with who I am. And, and, and, you know, I, I'm
- 12:57OK with who I am today. I, I don't need things to be
- 13:00different. You know, and I, I mean, I'm not
- 13:02rich and I'm OK, but because my richness is not about finances.
- 13:07It's about, you know, the love of my grandchildren, living in
- 13:12a, in a country that is relatively safe and I feel safe,
- 13:18you know, having really good friends that I'm, you know, that
- 13:23they call me out of the blue. I've been able to travel all
- 13:27around Australia at times. I mean, I've travelled up the
- 13:30middle of Australia on my own with nobody.
- 13:33And, you know, those things, especially when I was drinking,
- 13:38would have terrified me. And I, you know, I'm like, I, I
- 13:43was traveling up one year and you know, like things happen,
- 13:47you know, but I'm always like, someone will help me out or, you
- 13:52know, like, I never feel like I'm less stranded.
- 13:55And, you know, I mean, I, I was the person that was always, like
- 14:04I said, wanting things to be different.
- 14:05And today, yeah, definitely my life is full of gratitude.
- 14:09You know, I'm grateful that my kids are clean today.
- 14:12I'm, I'm grateful I don't have to worry about my kids.
- 14:15I'm, I'm certainly grateful that I have, you know, these
- 14:19beautiful grandchildren that just love me unconditionally.
- 14:23And, you know, I'm, I'm grateful at the moment.
- 14:28I've, I've got a friend that's just offered me a little granny
- 14:31flat down at Port Wilonga, you know, somewhere where I, I've
- 14:36always kind of wanted to live, you know, close to the beach.
- 14:40So I'm, I, as I said, I'm always taken care of.
- 14:43I've always find that, you know, sometimes I, there's a member,
- 14:48you know, passed away, but he always said that for him, a good
- 14:52thoughts, a prayer. And sometimes I find that, you
- 14:55know, like, I find that I might think something just, you know,
- 15:00might be something that I can keep kind of putting out there.
- 15:04And all of a sudden it happens. And I think, wow, how did that
- 15:07happen? And for me, that's my higher
- 15:09power, you know, that's God. And I so for me, that's how I
- 15:13give my thanks, you know, that. And that's what works for me,
- 15:16might not work for anybody else, but that, you know, and I think
- 15:19that's the thing for me has been finding, you know, finding out
- 15:23what works for me. I mean, there's a lot of people
- 15:26that, you know, like, I don't think that a a has to be for
- 15:29everybody. I mean, some people find, you
- 15:33know, find they'll they can change their life in religion,
- 15:37in in therapy, you know, it's what works for the individual
- 15:42and for me, this is what's worked.
- 15:44And so, you know, part of my gratitude, it definitely is
- 15:48towards, you know, a A and, and the founding members that, you
- 15:53know, a couple of guys that, who, who definitely struggled to
- 15:58get sober. And even their story is, is one
- 16:01of just, you know, being in the right place at the right time.
- 16:04And, and through, you know, and one person, through one of the
- 16:08guys, basically the reason he helped the other guy was because
- 16:12he just didn't want to drink. And so the only way he could not
- 16:16drink that day was to go and help someone else.
- 16:19And that's part of our philosophy is to, you know, give
- 16:22back what has been given to us, you know, and that, I mean,
- 16:26that's why I'm, I'm doing what I'm doing today.
- 16:29You know, I, I mean, it's out of my comfort zone.
- 16:31It's not something that I, you know, I feel like I can, I'm,
- 16:37I'm, I mean, I'm not, you know, anybody that feels quite this
- 16:42stuff easy to talk about or, or your, you know, especially, you
- 16:47know, to get on the radio and do it.
- 16:49But yeah, but I feel like, you know, whatever I can do, if that
- 16:55helps someone else out there, you know, my, my, you know, one
- 16:59of the things we have in, in a a is sponsors.
- 17:02And my very first sponsor, you know, years ago said to me, if I
- 17:09can help one person, my life has not been in vain.
- 17:13And I always think, well, she helped me.
- 17:15So, you know, that is that's what it's all about is passing
- 17:20it on. I guess my role today is just
- 17:23just to be 1 of many. I mean, a A is not about, you
- 17:29know, we don't, we don't sort of well, I, I don't, it's not, it's
- 17:34not like a, you know, you move up it up up sort of through the
- 17:37ranks or anything. But what, like I said, part of
- 17:42my role today, I mean, when I got first got sober, going to a
- 17:46a was about not drinking. You know, I did not want to
- 17:49drink. I was scared of that I might.
- 17:51And so I would go because I needed that today.
- 17:55Part of my role in A A is to help the newcomer, is to show
- 18:01that this program works, to show that, you know, you can you can
- 18:06get sober. It's to show that no matter what
- 18:10happens, you know, I mean, people die, you know, kids pick
- 18:14up, you know, bad things happen to good people and, and, and you
- 18:21know, so there's a lot of things that can happen that a lot of
- 18:24people feel they can't cope with those situations.
- 18:28So my, I guess part of my role is to say that, you know, you
- 18:32can, you can stay sober even though, you know, some terrible
- 18:37things can happen. I, I support other women, you
- 18:41know, I mean, I've been through relationship breakups.
- 18:46I, you know, like I've said, I've travelled a lot so I can
- 18:50support people to take risks and, and try different things.
- 18:55And yeah, so I guess that's part of my role.
- 19:01Part of it was when I was living in Cairns and my first, you
- 19:05know, when I first got sober the first time and my kids were
- 19:08really little, you know, Cairns been so transit, you know, there
- 19:13were a lot of people going backwards and forwards or moving
- 19:16all over Australia really. And I always thought wouldn't it
- 19:20be good to be able to drive from Cairns back to Adelaide to see
- 19:24my family, but the idea just petrified me.
- 19:29And so, you know, latest down the track, one of the good
- 19:34things about a A is we have tagalong.
- 19:37So basically there are a lot of people that during the year will
- 19:40meet up at, at a different, at different places.
- 19:44And we go, you know, we'll travel around for a few months.
- 19:49We, we'll pull up at night, we'll do meetings around
- 19:52campfires and some of those tagalongs will go to towns where
- 19:58a a is there isn't any a A and do public relations.
- 20:03So we'll have a like a public meeting where we invite doc, you
- 20:08know, whoever is interested in coming along and sort of
- 20:11spreading the words. That way.
- 20:14And so, yeah, I was doing a few of those.
- 20:18And that's one of the ways that Dennis and I became friends was
- 20:22that, you know, one of the times I was travelling back and I was
- 20:26really scared to come back on my own.
- 20:29And he just happened to be having to come back as well.
- 20:32And he followed me all the way back to Adelaide, which I was,
- 20:36you know, that for me was kind of almost unheard of that
- 20:38someone cared enough to, you know, just make sure you got
- 20:41home safely. And.
- 20:44And so then, yeah, the next time I was determined to like, I
- 20:50traveled with other members, but when I got to Cairns, I decided
- 20:54to drive from Cairns back to Adelaide on my own just to see
- 20:58if I could do it, which I did. And then the next year I was
- 21:03meeting up with friends, but some stuff happened and in the
- 21:08end I just decided I'm going on my own.
- 21:11So I drove basically from Adelaide up up the guts to
- 21:15Lightning Ridge. And then I had to meet my
- 21:18daughter in Cairns. So I drove from Lightning Ridge
- 21:20up to Cairns through the middle and I, I was just doing it, you
- 21:25know, because I had to do it for the thing.
- 21:27I wasn't really thinking about whether it was faith or
- 21:30whatever, but you know, because once I got to Cairns I was like,
- 21:33oh, I did that. But the problem is I would do it
- 21:37all the time. But I, I got 3 kids here who
- 21:41have decided that they want mum here and my grandkids don't like
- 21:45me going too far. So at the moment I'm having to
- 21:49sit still. And like I said, I mean, I've
- 21:51sort of been just moving from kids house to kids house
- 21:55supporting them. But I've just had this
- 21:57opportunity to get, get this new place and be on my own.
- 22:00So I'm going to try that for a little while.
- 22:04So we'll see how we go. You've obviously got lots of
- 22:08stories on your travels. And, yeah, a bit like you, you
- 22:13know, Alcoholics Anonymous gives you a life beyond your wildest
- 22:17dreams. And some of the things that
- 22:20happened to us and some of the coincidences are just
- 22:25unbelievable. But none of it would have
- 22:28happened, of course, if we we hadn't become members of
- 22:31Alcoholics Anonymous. Well.
- 22:33Absolutely. And the fellowship, you know,
- 22:35and just touching on what you were saying about the word God
- 22:40in the programme as we try to emphasize the fact that it's not
- 22:45a religious programme, it's a spiritual programme.
- 22:48And I think some of the things you talked about, you know, in
- 22:52your in your, in your share is that you just touched on the
- 22:57spiritual side and the goodness and things that are in people
- 23:02that we can connect with. And, and that's what we have in
- 23:06Alcoholics known as we have a connection.
- 23:08So thanks for sharing with us today.
- 23:12No worries, Dennis. Thank you for asking me.
- 23:14No worries. Welcome back.
- 23:18We have a number of local meetings in the area.
