- 0:00Hi and welcome to the Curve Weekly. The podcast that keeps you up to date with all the money,
- 0:06business and stock market tea. Everyone should experience for us at least once in their lives
- 0:10and Annie shouldn't miss out just because she can't afford it. Help me, I'm poor.
- 0:15So just to set the same, I am currently drinking a corona, well, well,
- 0:20all of it has a limit. You look like you just got home from like being out on the town.
- 0:24I have. I'm just going to record a podcast with a fork and tap. I'm an arrow down visiting my
- 0:33mum. You know that real cute pub down on the main street. Just for, and I was like wandering
- 0:40home, like a little bit tiddly and I was like, I really, this is irresponsible. I shouldn't be
- 0:44recording a podcast after three drugs. Oh gosh. Oh gosh.
- 0:50Maybe I should do a drunk podcast. But I think it would be better if we're both drunk. I don't
- 0:56want to be. Yes. I know. I like the silver one. Yeah. Yeah. Also, why pubs always called
- 1:02the fork and tap, the crown and shuttle. You know, like there was something in something.
- 1:08I should remember my mum telling me a story about. It was like a family friend or someone that
- 1:14had an accent. And they're like, can I have my fork and knife? But it sounded like I did. Can I
- 1:20have my fork and knife? But they were saying, can I have my fork and my knife? And I thought
- 1:25the fork in tap reminds me of that. That's quite funny. Can I have my fork and knife?
- 1:30And they were like, we don't really play that in the sound. Yeah.
- 1:34Like I want my fork and knife. Oh my god. We've made money in the crypto space.
- 1:42Yes, we have. But how much do we put in? We put in $3,000. So yours is $2,000. Mine was on
- 1:50your thousand. So you only put a thousand and crack up. Because when we first spoke about this,
- 1:54I was like, let's put two. And that was like, I only want to do that. So you, you text me and
- 1:59you were like, let's put two thousand and I was like, well, well, well, no, let's do it. Let's
- 2:02just do a thousand for now. And then we do a thousand later. And you're like, too late. I
- 2:04already transferred it to your bank account. That's right. Oh gosh. Okay. So I was like, okay,
- 2:08well, I'll invest yours. And then I'll put in a thousand dollars of mine. And
- 2:13lo and behold, should I listen to Sophie? All right.
- 2:15Shake yeah. So I've doubled my money. It is done. So well. It's like crazy. Like I
- 2:20see it. So for a little bit of the price chart. And it has just gone bananas. But yeah,
- 2:25it's up 150% in the last six months. It's about to be like, wow. I kind of want to take my,
- 2:31no, I want to take my money out though. That's kind of what I wanted to talk to you about. I was
- 2:34like, is it stupid to take my money out? Because I'm in a bit of a dire situation at the moment. So
- 2:39I was thinking, maybe this is a good time. If it's doubled, like isn't that great? Yeah. I know.
- 2:44It is, it's, it's quite crazy because we kind of bought it and then it dropped and then it's
- 2:49kind of went back up. So I was sitting here thinking, oh, we haven't probably made any money. And then
- 2:54Cha-ching. Check the bank account. So we've made full grant. Yeah. It's quite great. Well, I
- 3:00yeah. Yeah. Yeah. I have made two. Shit. Yeah. So we can sell. I want to invest more. Yeah. I
- 3:06know. I knew this would happen. Oh, this is the thing. I get so caught up in the heart. Exactly.
- 3:14And this is exactly what happens with so many people. They're like, oh gosh, I've dealt my
- 3:17money. I'm going to keep it in there. I'm going to add more, you know, very really to people go,
- 3:22oh, no, you know, that's a lot that I've made. I'm going to sell it. But as you can see, you
- 3:26mean, so I feel very different in terms of, I'm probably more risk of this. Hence, I only put in
- 3:30a thousand dollars. But this is all because, and we spoke about this thing a few weeks ago around
- 3:37how now there's ETFs. So you can buy Bitcoin ETFs. And so there's been a huge, huge surge in demand
- 3:42for Bitcoin. And BlackRock who is the largest fund manager and they do most of the ETFs. So they
- 3:48do your S&P 500 ETF. They're the biggest ETF creator. Their Bitcoin ETF reached 10 billion dollars
- 3:58of investment in two months. So that's 10 billion dollars. That's the fastest new ETF ever. So there
- 4:06is such a demand for this. It's crazy. I feel like the reason maybe that's successful is because
- 4:13it's less risky if you're in any situation, if you're buying an ETF, because you're getting
- 4:18diversification. I think there's very a lot of people that don't back themselves to pick the next
- 4:22coin, but they sort of want to have access to cryptocurrencies. And I think it's also, also just
- 4:30the fact that it's all in one place, you know, like ETFs, most of them are usually housed on
- 4:35trading platforms where you can buy stocks and shares. And so not having to go to where we have
- 4:42hours at Coinbase, transferring money, buying Bitcoin, selling it in different platforms, all housed
- 4:48and say, shearsies, for example, where you can buy ETFs by stocks. So it's kind of all in my place,
- 4:54just gives it creates this friction, which means that more people can buy it. So yeah, I think it's
- 5:00cool. It's going to be quite interesting to see what happens because stock charts that go like this,
- 5:04you know, they go straight up, they go vertical, they really, really scare me because if we're looking
- 5:09at Bitcoin, for example, it is reached all time highs. So everyone who has ever bought a Bitcoin,
- 5:16or part of a Bitcoin is now has now made a profit. So if everyone is thinking like you, oh, I've made
- 5:22a profit, I'm going to sell because it's now reached, so the previous high was $64,000 into
- 5:2921. And now it's 67,000. So even if you bought at 64,000 and you saw your price, if you're a bit
- 5:37coin full, full, full, full, full, it's now back and it's made a profit. So those people are going,
- 5:41oh gosh, I'm probably going to sell because I've been waiting so long and now I, you know, so if
- 5:46you want, there's people who know that now there's an ETF, now it's available in a more. Yeah,
- 5:52it's more accessible. Yeah, I almost feel like maybe there's a chance for it to continue to go up
- 5:59because it's so much more accessible now. Yeah, no, I mean, that's the thing, there's a constant
- 6:03thing with investing as you're weighing up the psychology, I guess, of human behavior. And you're
- 6:09like, this is the first time I've ever made a win. So I'm like, holy shit, do I sell? Do I keep it?
- 6:16Do I put more in? So I think my position is because I've used my entire emergency fund, I think
- 6:23that I should take profits, create a new emergency fund. And then what about selling half? No,
- 6:30you don't really do things about halves. No, I think I'll sell it all. Okay, I'll put it in my
- 6:36emergency fund and then I'll just watch it. And if it goes up gutted, but also at least I have an
- 6:42emergency fund now, true, that more than double than what I would have put in, you know? Yeah.
- 6:48And in terms of your mental health and having that money set aside would be much more beneficial
- 6:55than, oh, damn it, I could have made a bit more money. But the other bad thing is that gold,
- 7:00the price of gold is also heading records. So we have got stock markets around the world,
- 7:04we spoke about how the Japanese stock market is heading record, record highs, the S&P 500,
- 7:10the US stock market is heading highs, we talk about Bitcoin. Like everything is going up,
- 7:15it's like, what is happening to the world? It's like, but also gold is heading record highs.
- 7:20Now this is quite interesting because gold is considered like a safe haven. So when the world
- 7:26is capitulating, everyone's like, I want to own gold because it's like, it holds its value.
- 7:32It's, you know, literally if the world went to, we took like crumble tomorrow and you had a bar
- 7:38of gold, you'd be okay in terms of, you'd be financially okay. This is caveman energy.
- 7:44Yes. So that's why when the world is in turmoil, people buy gold. And so it's almost like,
- 7:51and it's an inflation hedge as well. So if the world is, you know, inflation is all over the show,
- 7:57then gold holds its value anyway. So it's weird to see stock markets and Bitcoin and really
- 8:04risky assets or investments doing well. When gold is also doing well, because it's like, hang on,
- 8:10people invest in risky things and take that risk and would invest in the stock market because
- 8:16that means as companies are growing, the world's growing, the economy's doing really well. And people
- 8:21hold gold for the opposite reason. So yeah, but people are scared of like the politics in the US,
- 8:26how that's unfolding, what could happen there. Maybe that the stock market could correct,
- 8:32because everything is at all time highs. So that's why there's been this increase in price of gold.
- 8:38And it's what we call a flight to safety. So it's like, you're like, oh, good, some finance
- 8:44jagged in terms of like people switching out into much more safer investments. But it's weird,
- 8:50because we're kind of not seeing that. We're seeing the risky investments do well and the
- 8:54safe investments do well. So I don't know the world's very confused place right now. I honestly just
- 8:58reckon all the investors are totally full of shit, to be honest, like no one has any idea what's
- 9:02going on. No one's ever going to know what's going on. You know, you're saying, it's a tiny bit of
- 9:07money. But when she's like, investors are all shit. No one knows what they're talking about.
- 9:14X one good return. Yeah, she knows her shit. But I just mean there's like, you can never really
- 9:20ever predict anything actually. And I think all it's really teaching me is what you said before,
- 9:25have you made the money that was right, helping you reach your goals? Are you making decisions
- 9:30that are right for you rather than doing what you think everyone's going to do or what you think's
- 9:34going to happen? It's much easier if you focus in on yourself rather than nitpicking or putting
- 9:41a microscope to what you think's going to happen globally or with your local economy or whatever.
- 9:45It's kind of just like, what you think's going to happen could be totally different to what
- 9:49Thomas down the road thinks is going to happen. So it's an honestly, it's been of a much
- 9:53much. And you have people like, sitting there analyzing data of like, what is going to happen
- 9:59to the world? And they don't even get it right. And they seem like, they're full time.
- 10:03It's like me. I think the job is redundant. Yeah. I just don't think there's a job for analysts.
- 10:08I actually think that we're all analysts. But also we had international women's day last week.
- 10:15Awesome. Sorry, it's actually today's. I'm kind of like trying to be like, I know you just
- 10:21don't so so I guess. So we are going on it. This is going out on Monday and she's trying her best
- 10:29so genuine. So international women's day. So there was actually some really big news out of
- 10:35Australia, which kind of ties into international women's day. So is this what I shared to our
- 10:40Instagram group? I didn't see that. Super, super stuff. Yeah. Yeah. You realize that I wait up
- 10:46and if I come straight into this record. So officially, I think it's like, yeah,
- 10:51it's just kind of like, oh, did you see Emily's day? I was like, no, no, it's 7.30 in the morning.
- 10:55I literally got out of bed record this morning. We're on different time zones. It's really
- 10:59not a strength of mine, okay? Sorry, little rant over. But no, I didn't see that.
- 11:05You're okay. Does you get that one out? Are you feeling all right?
- 11:08I'm like, I haven't had a coffee. Okay. I'm trying to try again. You live in
- 11:13what I was doing. Oh, shit. Obviously not working.
- 11:19Anyway, yes. So big news in Australia. So people who receive government funders pay
- 11:25parental leave. So this isn't this isn't companies that pay parental leave. This is when
- 11:30because there are some companies that don't pay parental leave, which I find still crazy in 2024.
- 11:35But there is a government. None at all. None at all. So only 60 percent of large companies in
- 11:41Australia pay parental leave. So there's still 40 percent that don't, which I'm just like,
- 11:47I'm sorry, but why would I ever want to work at one of those firms? How do they even get staff?
- 11:51I'm at anyway. The thing is, I understand if it's a small company, I think it's really hard.
- 11:57Totally. Really hard. Like if you're a startup with not a lot of money and one of your key people,
- 12:02like I understand, but if you're a lion brewery or some bank or like you leave it. Yeah.
- 12:09Yeah. And you can't afford to pay people while they're taking time off to have kids. It's like,
- 12:14I know. Surely people will stop working for those companies.
- 12:17But although they'll just have to change it. Yeah. But anyway, so yeah, there are still 40
- 12:21percent of companies that don't. But anyway, so in Australia, yes, the government announced that
- 12:26they will be paying superannuation on top of that page parental leave. So that's effectively an
- 12:32extra 12 percent because super in Australia is 12 percent. It's 3 percent in New Zealand,
- 12:38which is crazy that it's like, the savings rate in Australia is massive and it's great.
- 12:44People paying 12 percent of their salary to this super amazing. But if you're not getting that
- 12:49because you're on paid parental leave from the government, your savings are a time and
- 12:54give me a lot, lot less. So this is great, great news. And it's just going to do wonders for helping
- 13:00the gender pay gap, women in the workforce and participating more just everything. So
- 13:06and the motherhood penalty as well. I mean, isn't that mainly the reason why so many women,
- 13:12when it comes to retirement or going back into the workforce, have so much leases because
- 13:16it's not only just earning less, but it's also not contributing to your super or your
- 13:19kiwi saver or whatever. And your salary comes down and your expenses go up because you've now
- 13:23got a child. Like it's, of course, your contributions to a super are the last thing that you're
- 13:28thinking of. And so, but I'm also like, who put this policy in the first place? This paper rental
- 13:34policy. I didn't think about super or didn't think about superannuation. I was just like, oh no,
- 13:41it kind of baffles me sometimes and these policies get put in. But also Australia only has
- 13:4520 weeks of paid for rental leave from the government. So how much is that month to four to five
- 13:51months? Five months. So so they get five months of paid leave now plus on top of it that they get
- 13:5912%. Yeah. Yeah. But government paid for rental leave is still very low. So a lot of companies
- 14:05will top it up to your salary. I don't I don't know the exact figures, but say you were earning,
- 14:10I don't know, $800 a week in your job. And the government paid for rental leave was on the
- 14:16400. You know, you're still getting a significant reduction if your company doesn't pay it up.
- 14:21Top up the difference. So yeah. But yeah, this is just great in the scheme of things. It's
- 14:25really going to help that. And you know, in the case it's going to take 250 years to close the
- 14:31junior pay gap, hopefully that might show a few years off, which would be great. New Zealand.
- 14:36Where you at? Yeah. Where you at New Zealand? America. Where you at? Canada? Where you at?
- 14:40The country. We are at every country. Yes. And in other news, so do you remember weight watches?
- 14:49Yeah. I used to love their bars. You know, those little ones with the eight broccot in the middle.
- 14:55Yeah. So anyway, Oprah went free. She joined the board of weight watches 10 years ago. And
- 15:02the share price did amazingly well. Then I said, oh my god, she's going to be an ambassador and
- 15:06advocate. And you know, if Oprah is there, people want to join weight watches and all of this.
- 15:11And she has just announced that she is leaving weight watches board after 10 years. Because.
- 15:20And I'm just like, oh no, why? Because she started to take weight loss pills.
- 15:25I know. And I'm just like, I'm sorry. And then she said that outright. Yeah, outright. Yeah.
- 15:31And she's like, so I'm like, firstly, you're just saying that the business that you've been on the
- 15:35board for the last 10 years hasn't worked because like, and B, you're kind of saying that the whole
- 15:42business model is screwed because if you can't lose weight, you're going to take these weight loss
- 15:47medication. I'm just like, honestly, I was. Hold on, hold on, hold on. Is she saying I'm taking weight
- 15:54loss pills or I'm taking weight loss medication? She goes. And then the board, the rest of the
- 16:00board comes out. It's like the chairperson of the board comes out and says to eliminate any perceived
- 16:04conflict of interest around her taking weight loss medication. Oprah has decided to leave the
- 16:09board of weight watches. I was just like, what is, and then I said, then I said, what would it
- 16:13be like? And I said, it would be like, you're using your Samsung phone and you're the CEO of Apple
- 16:18or something. Or you turn up in 80s and you work at Nike. I think what's more important is the
- 16:26fact that she is publicly talking about taking weight loss medication. When she is the icon for
- 16:33self-love and self-acceptance and self-growing and then you're going and taking weight loss pills,
- 16:40I don't know if that's giving young women the most great things to look up to. Yeah.
- 16:46Yeah. No, I agree. With no context. If you're unhealthy and you're so overweight, then your doctor
- 16:51has said you need to get your stomach stable or whatever it's called or you need to take these
- 16:56weight loss pills because you're at risk from a health perspective. Definitely. But with no
- 17:01context, it sort of feels a bit off-brand. But I'm also like, wouldn't you just come out and say
- 17:07for personal reasons? Or I don't know, and then you can, I feel like there's something that's
- 17:12gone on at the board level and she probably hasn't been happy for a while or they haven't been happy
- 17:17with her. And I don't know. Yeah, it's quite interesting. Please don't leave a relationship
- 17:25like that with the board of directors that have been on the board with for 10 years and say,
- 17:29screw you, wait, watch this hasn't worked for me. So I'm taking weight loss medication. Do you
- 17:33know what I mean? There's kind of, it's like a kick in the guts. It's like someone leaving the
- 17:38board of Adidas and saying, I'm leaving because I prefer Nike clothing. It's like walking out with
- 17:43your Nike's on. Yeah, you can just leave and be like, I'm leaving for personal reasons or
- 17:47because I want to pursue something else. You don't have to leave and kick them while you're down,
- 17:51kind of. But anyway, so the sheer price of weight watches has plummeted and it fell about 20%
- 17:58in one day on that news. It has had a really shit time though. And I also think the big learning
- 18:03from this is like, weight watches also get up with the play. Like, oh, it's so 90s. Yeah.
- 18:09Weight watches, honestly, it's bizarre to even think about the ads that were in the 90s and how
- 18:16weight watches was being marketed to young women. Yeah. And also, like, weight watching,
- 18:21it's like, now there's all like, well, we're eating healthy, being strong, being fit. But
- 18:27you still have the name weight watches. I'm just, anyway, it's baffling. I was just seeing it.
- 18:32I saw a post on, I think it must have been an international woman's day,
- 18:36saying around the way that men work out comparatively to women and how they're basically just
- 18:41saying, like, take up space, like women can be strong and work out because they want to feel like
- 18:48they can run away from a lion or they can, you know, you're not working out for the purpose of how
- 18:54you look. You're working out to feel strong in your body and be capable. And it's just changing
- 19:00the narrative of what exercise looks like for women compared to why, you know, we're told,
- 19:05work out or eat less or like shape up. So, do you know what I'm incredibly sick of?
- 19:12My algorithm serving me, turn up, want to learn how you can get rid of your double chin or like
- 19:19wanting to know how you can suck in that tummy with a fucking skin suit. I'm like, honestly,
- 19:25shut up. Like, I'm so offered. And you're like, hold on up for like a few too many seconds. And then
- 19:29you're like, no, no, I'm going to get a feed heaps of this. You're like, honestly, I'm so
- 19:32offered. Yeah, so offered. I started reporting ads. I started reporting them because I'm like,
- 19:37still telling me what to look like. I started watching how to circumcise a penis and
- 19:42wait, sorry, sorry, I don't know why I got fed up. And where? I don't know why I got fed up.
- 19:47It was on my algorithm. Oh, it was like it. And my sister looked over and she was like, what are
- 19:50you watching? I was like, I don't know. But I'm kind of intrigued. And then I was like,
- 19:54oh my god, I hope I don't get a whole little circumcision ads now. Sorry, sorry, sorry. What do
- 19:58you mean how to circuit like as if that's a home job? No, no, no, no, no, it was like a procedure.
- 20:02It was like the procedure. It wasn't like how to do it as a home job. It was like, this is how
- 20:06it's done. Sorry. Okay. And I was like, how is it done? They just chop the end off. No, it's
- 20:12is I kind of got bored to be honest. I was like, okay, this is too long. I don't know. Yeah. But
- 20:16anyway, sorry, you're getting see right? Yeah. But then you're watching it and you're kind of
- 20:22intrigued. And then you're like, oh, no, no, I don't want to be fed a whole lot of circumcision
- 20:25content. But yes, it's back to Weight Watchers. So like you're saying, like the whole weight loss thing
- 20:32and like the yo-yoness of dieting, they're this company does super, super well at the beginning
- 20:38of the year when everyone's like, new year, new me. And they have so many subscribers to this
- 20:45to the Weight Watchers platform. Like honestly, their chart looks quite interesting. It's like
- 20:49this huge spike at the beginning of the year. And then it's just their revenue drops and drops
- 20:53and drops drop the year. And then a massive spike the next year. And then drop, drop, drop. And so
- 20:57they have to keep winning back these customers each year. And also if people are doing well,
- 21:02they're going to leave the platform. If they're not doing well, they're going to leave the platform.
- 21:05So you're kind of, I think the whole business model is a bit screwed, you know?
- 21:11But yeah, yeah. Anyway, so the lack of that revenue visibility is for me what personally scared
- 21:19me about investing in this business. And I have to admit, I haven't been in Weight Watchers
- 21:26years ago, years ago. I know. It was when I pre-joined the board and they did a rebrand.
- 21:33They rebranded from Weight Watchers to WWU. Yeah, I can't even remember the rationale that I invested
- 21:38in it, but it was a terrible investment. Was this personally or through work? Yeah, so it wasn't
- 21:43my finest moment. They probably did quite a decent amount. No, didn't. Yeah, no, it was, I mean,
- 21:50the last 12 months, this year price is down 60%. And the Eastern people hundreds up 30% in the last
- 21:56six months. So totally last 12 months. So that's like, this is gone, down, down, down, down, down. And
- 22:02the overall market has gone up, up, up. So yeah, I don't know, I was going to have it to Weight Watchers,
- 22:08I think it's really off. I think the past is not, it's not in. I also want to go for
- 22:15or invest in companies that are doing good stuff in the world. And I feel like this is an example
- 22:20of a company that I don't believe in the ethos of what they're doing. And for sure, there's obviously
- 22:25people who need, who need help losing weight because they are, they're unhealthy and their
- 22:30docks have said you need to go down a dress size or whatever, different. And if they need that help
- 22:35fine, I'm not saying there's no space for that. But when you're praying on the insecurity,
- 22:41mainly of women, because they need to look a certain way for me, that's not a company I want to
- 22:46support with my money. No, I agree. But yeah, I think it's, it's always good to look back at your
- 22:50investments as well. Like I would never invest in that now. But it's easy to say that when the
- 22:54ship price is fallen so much, but yeah, it's, it's like you said, do your values align with this
- 22:59business? Do you like what it does? Do you see it being successful? Do you see it surviving in the
- 23:04next 15 years? Like this company has to have a massive rebrand, almost become a new company,
- 23:10which is expensive and time consuming and takes so long to turn around a business. I'd be like,
- 23:15you know what? No, there's so many other businesses that I admire, that I want to see grow,
- 23:19that I want to see you successful. So do you know what I kind of like about what you just said as
- 23:24well? It's similar to how you grow and change with your fashion or the people you spend time
- 23:31with, all the kind of work you want to do, let you grow and change. And some things that you might
- 23:35have invested in 10 years ago will be very different to how you invest in 10 years. Which I want
- 23:40to see is exactly why I've never got a tattoo because if I was made to wear three-quarter,
- 23:46bright orange jakees that I wore when I was 10, at 30, I'd be gutted. Do you know what I mean?
- 23:53But because you can sell your investments when they're dated or no longer serviced, you can leave
- 23:59when you're like, yeah, I'm done with that, right? Yeah, that's always good. Yeah, you're about,
- 24:04you're, yeah, I'm just going to shut up. Didn't really have anything good to say from that one.
- 24:13Okay, very well, go for a sec. Corona. Yeah, go for it. Do you know what? I might just whip on a bit
- 24:17of gossip girl, have a shower, put a face mask on, finish my corona on bed. Well, I have to commute
- 24:23from East to West London in Russia. So wish me luck for you. You know,
- 24:30sweeties, sweeties, humans. Wait, she's not sweetie, it's a free thing. But yeah, I will be
- 24:35saddened. Yeah, I kind of like it. I like being saddened. You're so weird. I know. Love that
- 24:40everyone has to line up on the bright side of the, you know, off the escalator down, you know,
- 24:45it's so orderly and everyone's just doing the same thing. Whereas there's like me on the left side
- 24:49being like, okay, coming through, coming through. I'm so weird. If you could have a briefcase,
- 24:57you would, you know, if you would be saying that with your briefcase, like, I'm going to be
- 25:02actually be looking at these lines. It's quite funny. Not briefcases, but like, it's real funny.
- 25:08I'm going to show you a day in your life. Oh my god. Yes, and just mock each other.
- 25:13We've got to be quite mean. I feel like it would be, you would just be late everywhere for me,
- 25:18turning up sweaty and stressed. And I'd be wearing bright clothes. You want to join your meeting?
- 25:22Sorry, no, that she'd been in the diary for two weeks. We're not able to do that.
- 25:28Oh my god, we're going to be in a suck of law. Okay. Anyway, I will check you later.
