- 0:04Speaker 1: Welcome, moms. Welcome to Inside the Mom's Club. I'm your host,
- 0:06Speaker 1: Monica Samuels. Here I am with Julie or get my
- 0:09Speaker 1: co host. Hello Julie. Hey Monica, this is this is
- 0:13Speaker 1: going to be a very fun show. I mean we
- 0:15Speaker 1: are so honored today.
- 0:17Speaker 2: I mean, listen, how can you not have fun.
- 0:19Speaker 3: We've got like runds and you've got those pig you know,
- 0:24Speaker 3: stuffed animals.
- 0:25Speaker 2: So I'm excited exactly.
- 0:27Speaker 1: Yeah, no, this is fun. So we're having a superstar,
- 0:30Speaker 1: I mean, superstar of children's music is with us today.
- 0:34Speaker 1: We couldn't be more honored if we had Barney himself
- 0:38Speaker 1: right here sitting in the studio. I mean, this couldn't
- 0:40Speaker 1: be any very true. So we are so excited. And
- 0:43Speaker 1: actually I'm much more excited. No offense to Barney, but
- 0:46Speaker 1: I think this interview will be much more interesting. Yeah,
- 0:49Speaker 1: I mean, because I'm not sure how much I can
- 0:52Speaker 1: tell you.
- 0:52Speaker 2: So much fun this morning.
- 0:53Speaker 1: It has been fun because we've been remembering the children's
- 0:56Speaker 1: songs that our kids. Because our kids are older, they've
- 1:00Speaker 1: moved on to other music. But remember what was your
- 1:03Speaker 1: favorite song when your kids are a little.
- 1:05Speaker 3: Well, okay, so in my brain that plays over and
- 1:07Speaker 3: over because I used to drive to North Carolina all
- 1:10Speaker 3: the time. Is Little Einstein and that was you know,
- 1:14Speaker 3: I have a twenty three year old and an eighteen
- 1:16Speaker 3: year old and that plays in my head over and over.
- 1:19Speaker 3: And we also did music class, and I can honestly
- 1:22Speaker 3: say everything that we did when they were children that
- 1:27Speaker 3: was absolutely pivotal. It was they still to this day
- 1:30Speaker 3: remember it well.
- 1:31Speaker 1: What I loved was I love that they taught important
- 1:35Speaker 1: lessons in some of these songs. So we enjoyed Joe
- 1:37Speaker 1: McDermott and he had a song called don't drop a
- 1:41Speaker 1: brick on your No, don't drop a brick on your foot,
- 1:45Speaker 1: it will hurt. And so my kids learned that lesson.
- 1:49Speaker 1: They never dropped a brick on their foot. That was great.
- 1:51Speaker 1: But I only wish that he had put a show up,
- 1:53Speaker 1: put a song out called don't throw a baseball at
- 1:56Speaker 1: Mommy's head when she's not ready for it yet, that
- 2:00Speaker 1: it would have been really coo.
- 2:01Speaker 2: That would have been really helpful.
- 2:03Speaker 1: Or my niece who's daughters in cheer, said she'd rather
- 2:06Speaker 1: she's like a song that says, yeah, don't do a kick,
- 2:09Speaker 1: don't practice your headstand in front of Mommy's face. So,
- 2:13Speaker 1: but there's all kinds of things. The great thing about
- 2:16Speaker 1: kids music is there's so much you get out of it,
- 2:18Speaker 1: and there's so many things like my mom, who's eighty
- 2:20Speaker 1: seven years old to this day, when she comes to
- 2:23Speaker 1: visit us, every morning with my mother starts with oh,
- 2:26Speaker 1: mister son, son, mister golden son, please shun down on me.
- 2:32Speaker 1: And so every morning, I mean, I just sing that
- 2:35Speaker 1: to myself because it's so cheerful. Well, I remember that.
- 2:39Speaker 1: And then there's some things about kids music that sticks
- 2:41Speaker 1: with you that's kind of a little bit, sometimes a
- 2:44Speaker 1: little sad and emotional. Like when I was practicing law,
- 2:47Speaker 1: our recruiting coordinator's son was two. He passed away and
- 2:51Speaker 1: the funeral they played at the end of the funeral,
- 2:54Speaker 1: I Love You from Barney and everybody was in tears.
- 2:59Speaker 1: All know that song. And so it's like kids music
- 3:03Speaker 1: is just.
- 3:04Speaker 3: Oh, I think it's critical all the way around to
- 3:07Speaker 3: have that going on.
- 3:08Speaker 1: So it is so we are so thrilled.
- 3:10Speaker 2: Oh we gotta get rid of this is one.
- 3:12Speaker 1: This is in honor of our guests.
- 3:14Speaker 2: I got to reach for my peg here, hold on, yes.
- 3:16Speaker 1: Hang on, get yourself set here. I want to make
- 3:18Speaker 1: the biggest introduction. We are so honors to have today
- 3:21Speaker 1: with us. A woman recognized as the Queen of Kids
- 3:25Speaker 1: Music by People magazine. She is a singer, songwriter, performer,
- 3:29Speaker 1: and author. She has more than one point seven billion
- 3:34Speaker 1: total streams and five hundred and seventy eight million YouTube views.
- 3:38Speaker 1: Her songs have become beloved classics for children music worldwide.
- 3:43Speaker 1: She's about to release her eighteenth album, Walking with the Penguins.
- 3:46Speaker 1: It'll be released in June of twenty twenty six. Please
- 3:50Speaker 1: welcome Lourie Berkner. Welcome to the Mom's Club.
- 3:52Speaker 4: Lori Hi, thank you so much, thank.
- 3:55Speaker 1: You for joining us. Mean, and for those moms out
- 3:59Speaker 1: there who don't know, tell them of one of your
- 4:03Speaker 1: big songs is Pig on My Head?
- 4:06Speaker 2: Is that correct?
- 4:07Speaker 1: Oh? Yes, so I love it.
- 4:10Speaker 2: Yeah, you're doing a great job.
- 4:11Speaker 4: He stays in there.
- 4:13Speaker 1: I know. I'm not kidding.
- 4:15Speaker 4: They're gonna need to keep it up there all day.
- 4:17Speaker 1: Oh that's right, You're supposed to keep it up there
- 4:19Speaker 1: all day. That's right.
- 4:21Speaker 3: Didn't you play a guitar with a pig on your head?
- 4:23Speaker 3: At least we could do, is you know? I mean, seriously, well,
- 4:27Speaker 3: we are so thrilled to have you here.
- 4:29Speaker 1: I know that every kid and mom out there are
- 4:33Speaker 1: just excited to hear have you. Have you here with
- 4:36Speaker 1: us today. Tell us a little bit about So how
- 4:38Speaker 1: did you start playing and singing children's music?
- 4:43Speaker 4: I actually started because I got a job about a
- 4:46Speaker 4: year out of college as a music teacher for preschoolers.
- 4:51Speaker 4: I wasn't the classroom teacher, but I taught all of
- 4:54Speaker 4: the classes at the preschool as their music teacher over
- 4:57Speaker 4: the course of the week. It was a part time job,
- 5:01Speaker 4: and I I had done like some music at a
- 5:05Speaker 4: camp as a camp counselor. I was the music counselor
- 5:08Speaker 4: at a camp up in Vermont, and I had worked
- 5:11Speaker 4: at a daycare and I'd done some babysitting, and so
- 5:14Speaker 4: I thought I could do this. And I was horrible,
- 5:19Speaker 4: Like I was the worst, the worst. I didn't I like,
- 5:23Speaker 4: had didn't bring in anything that they had fun with.
- 5:26Speaker 4: They didn't like any of the songs I sang. I
- 5:29Speaker 4: couldn't control anything that was happening in the class, Like
- 5:33Speaker 4: the kids just ran all over the room. And then
- 5:37Speaker 4: eventually I felt kind of at my wits end, and
- 5:40Speaker 4: the person who hired me the head of the school said,
- 5:43Speaker 4: why don't you go and observe the woman who we
- 5:47Speaker 4: had for ten years before you and maybe you can
- 5:49Speaker 4: get someone. So I did and she I watched her
- 5:54Speaker 4: at the piano, go like, won't you please stand up?
- 5:57Speaker 4: You know, and the kids would go, these three year
- 5:59Speaker 4: old but everyone, everybody just seemed to be having fun,
- 6:05Speaker 4: enjoying the music. And afterwards I went up to her
- 6:08Speaker 4: and I said, how you're like magical? How did you
- 6:11Speaker 4: do that? I don't even know how to speak to
- 6:15Speaker 4: these kids. I don't think I speak the same language.
- 6:17Speaker 4: And she said, you shouldn't be talking, just put it
- 6:20Speaker 4: in the music. And that was when I thought, oh, well,
- 6:25Speaker 4: I write songs. Maybe I could just write some songs
- 6:28Speaker 4: that tell them what I want them to, you know,
- 6:32Speaker 4: encourage them to do with their bodies and how to
- 6:35Speaker 4: sing things. And just so I started doing that.
- 6:38Speaker 3: I mean, I think that the crowd that you had,
- 6:40Speaker 3: these three year olds, people don't realize that's a lot
- 6:43Speaker 3: tougher than you think, right, Like, I mean tough crowd here.
- 6:46Speaker 3: You got to do, you know, kind of go along
- 6:49Speaker 3: and play their game and do that. Do you enjoy
- 6:52Speaker 3: the writing process or you have audio books, Like, what
- 6:56Speaker 3: is your favorite part about being a singer?
- 7:00Speaker 4: I mean, there's I like a lot of parts of it.
- 7:02Speaker 4: I do. I love having written a song sometimes I
- 7:07Speaker 4: love actually the writing. It's sort of when I'm in
- 7:09Speaker 4: it and it's working, I love it. Not I don't
- 7:12Speaker 4: love it so much. And I love being in the studio.
- 7:18Speaker 4: I really feel like that's just such a beautifully artistic
- 7:23Speaker 4: place to be. There's so much like audio sculpting that
- 7:28Speaker 4: happens in there, and imagination building and world building. So
- 7:32Speaker 4: I love that. I love doing the shows. I love
- 7:36Speaker 4: the meet and greets after the shows, Like the performing
- 7:38Speaker 4: is really yeah, it's really fun to perform, but it
- 7:42Speaker 4: also is so personal and special to actually meet the
- 7:47Speaker 4: families and kids who some of them who came to
- 7:50Speaker 4: the show afterwards and get to hear like what the
- 7:53Speaker 4: kid's favorite song is, what some of their experiences are.
- 7:57Speaker 4: Just so I have that connection. I mean, I have
- 8:00Speaker 4: a huge connection when we're actually singing together in the
- 8:03Speaker 4: space and moving around together. But when I'm getting a
- 8:07Speaker 4: little sense of how my music fits into someone's life,
- 8:11Speaker 4: that is just very beautiful and rewarding for me.
- 8:16Speaker 3: Do you have something that sticks in your head when
- 8:18Speaker 3: you talk to a child, have they said anything to
- 8:21Speaker 3: you that really like digs In? And you're like, ooh,
- 8:24Speaker 3: that hit you know about one of your songs.
- 8:28Speaker 4: It's funny. I feel like the very young kids don't.
- 8:30Speaker 4: They don't talk so much about the songs. It's just
- 8:34Speaker 4: this is my favorite song. I want to hear this song.
- 8:36Speaker 4: I want to hear it again. I want to hear
- 8:37Speaker 4: it again and again. But then when they get older.
- 8:41Speaker 4: And I've been doing this for you know, thirty somes
- 8:45Speaker 4: long time now, for years now, and I get a
- 8:49Speaker 4: lot of messages from people who kids in college, people
- 8:54Speaker 4: who are parents now bringing their kids to my shows.
- 9:00Speaker 4: Just a week ago, I was in Indianapolis, and that
- 9:05Speaker 4: was like a tongue twister. I should in Indianapolis. Anyway,
- 9:09Speaker 4: I was there and one of the people I met
- 9:12Speaker 4: afterwards was their kids were hugging me and seemed, you know,
- 9:17Speaker 4: so excited to meet me. And the dad was like,
- 9:20Speaker 4: I just want you to know that I grew up
- 9:22Speaker 4: on your music, and so this is really really special
- 9:24Speaker 4: for me to finally like meet you. And I shared
- 9:27Speaker 4: the music with my kids because I loved it so much,
- 9:30Speaker 4: and now they loved it so much and like those
- 9:33Speaker 4: kinds of stories, or a teenager like especially during COVID
- 9:38Speaker 4: twenty somethings in college or would write and say, I'm
- 9:42Speaker 4: listening to your music because it's the only thing that
- 9:44Speaker 4: makes me feel safe right now. And you know it's
- 9:48Speaker 4: very moving.
- 9:49Speaker 1: Yeah, give them some comfort. It must be great, yeah,
- 9:52Speaker 1: sharing those family experiences with generations of families. Where do
- 9:59Speaker 1: you how do you decide what to write about? So
- 10:03Speaker 1: when you're deciding to write a kid's song, And I
- 10:05Speaker 1: noticed when I was when I was doing research for
- 10:07Speaker 1: this episode, I saw I listened to your song Waiting
- 10:12Speaker 1: for the Elevator, and I thought, I have a personal
- 10:15Speaker 1: fear of elevators that I've developed over my years. I
- 10:18Speaker 1: like what But I started looking. There's a lot of
- 10:20Speaker 1: songs about elevators for kids, and mostly to teach them
- 10:24Speaker 1: how to be safe on an elevator. Or there's even one,
- 10:27Speaker 1: I guess there was a Joe McDermott song about I
- 10:29Speaker 1: Got stuck on an elevator, which wasn't very comforting. But
- 10:33Speaker 1: so how do you how do you choose? Like do
- 10:35Speaker 1: you choose it to teach them lessons or are you
- 10:38Speaker 1: just trying to convey it's a sunny Day, or you
- 10:41Speaker 1: have the song about a pig on your Yeah, how
- 10:43Speaker 1: did you decide to write about a pig on your head?
- 10:45Speaker 1: Putting a pig on your britt What inspired you to
- 10:48Speaker 1: write some of your songs?
- 10:51Speaker 4: Well, a lot of different things, specifically with pig on
- 10:54Speaker 4: her head? Was I was. I was a music teacher
- 10:58Speaker 4: at the West Side Why in the sixties in New
- 11:01Speaker 4: York City, and I would come into the classrooms after
- 11:06Speaker 4: the teachers would have the kids all sit on a
- 11:09Speaker 4: circle or on the rug and than to like prepare
- 11:12Speaker 4: for me to come into the classroom, which meant that
- 11:15Speaker 4: I was coming into their space, right, so they would
- 11:17Speaker 4: have just been doing something else. So there are a
- 11:19Speaker 4: bunch of kids in this one group who had been
- 11:24Speaker 4: playing with plastic animals. And one of the kids I
- 11:28Speaker 4: still remember his name. This was, you know, more than
- 11:30Speaker 4: twenty years ago now, but his name was Marco. So
- 11:32Speaker 4: he's an adult now. He Marco wherever you are. He
- 11:38Speaker 4: had this little plastic pig and you put it on
- 11:42Speaker 4: his head. And when I said, okay, everybody, put your
- 11:44Speaker 4: animals away, we're going to start music, and he just
- 11:46Speaker 4: like sat there with that thing on his head, and
- 11:49Speaker 4: I looked at him, and I was like, Marco has
- 11:51Speaker 4: time to put the pig away. Marco's time to put
- 11:54Speaker 4: the big away, you know, And and he didn't. So
- 12:01Speaker 4: I had a choice to make. I was like, I
- 12:05Speaker 4: can I can either be kind of like more aggressively
- 12:11Speaker 4: disciplining and say like you have to do that one
- 12:14Speaker 4: two three or whatever, like kind of be an authoritarian
- 12:18Speaker 4: in that moment, or I can make a song about
- 12:21Speaker 4: it and then he can move from there. So I
- 12:25Speaker 4: just started singing, Marco has a pig on, is said,
- 12:29Speaker 4: and said, Marco has a pig on, he said, and
- 12:32Speaker 4: he keeps it there all day like he did when. Yeah,
- 12:38Speaker 4: the rest of the kids just they were like, I
- 12:39Speaker 4: want an animal, and they ran and they got their
- 12:42Speaker 4: animal and they sat really like quietly and like attentively
- 12:47Speaker 4: waiting for me to sing Monica mouse on her head,
- 12:52Speaker 4: Julie has a tiger on. Then make the sound you
- 12:55Speaker 4: know what does it sayink? Pink? And it just I
- 12:59Speaker 4: just started doing it.
- 13:01Speaker 1: Well.
- 13:01Speaker 2: I loved it because I saw your documentary.
- 13:03Speaker 3: Part of the documentary you know, I have you know
- 13:06Speaker 3: it And there you are and there's adults sitting in
- 13:09Speaker 3: the audience and they're just chilling, and they've got this
- 13:12Speaker 3: animal on their head and it's so fun. And I
- 13:15Speaker 3: was just like, look at everybody just hanging you know, turtles, monkeys, well.
- 13:20Speaker 1: And it's it's so interactive because of course you are
- 13:23Speaker 1: waiting for your turn, like, hey, I got I gotta
- 13:26Speaker 1: pick on my head.
- 13:26Speaker 3: Jimmy would have a sloth on her head, but yeah,
- 13:31Speaker 3: sloth on your head.
- 13:32Speaker 2: Well that's her favorite stuff to answer.
- 13:34Speaker 1: Oh, okay, I guess.
- 13:36Speaker 4: That's harder because I don't know what a sloth says. Oh,
- 13:40Speaker 4: I don't things. I mean I try to make like
- 13:43Speaker 4: have fun with that. At my shows, I will ask
- 13:47Speaker 4: I usually in the press about the shows, I say,
- 13:50Speaker 4: bring an animal for your head. And so when the show,
- 13:52Speaker 4: when we get to that part of the show, I've
- 13:55Speaker 4: already talked to the lighting person to bring the lights
- 13:57Speaker 4: up so that I can look out and see like
- 14:00Speaker 4: who's got a sloth and who's got a giraffe which
- 14:02Speaker 4: definitely makes no sound, and who's a narwhal? And so
- 14:07Speaker 4: I'm like, I see I see snoopy, I see whatever,
- 14:12Speaker 4: I see Bluey, and and then I try to sing
- 14:15Speaker 4: about some of them in the song. So that song
- 14:18Speaker 4: is always different at every show.
- 14:20Speaker 1: Well, and you also are challenged to keep up to
- 14:21Speaker 1: date with everything happening in kid world because you just
- 14:25Speaker 1: mentioned you know, blue and everything, and I hate to
- 14:28Speaker 1: may I could see blue, I might not recognize it
- 14:30Speaker 1: right off the bat. I probably would now, yeah, but
- 14:33Speaker 1: originally or there what was that shark? That shark shark song?
- 14:38Speaker 1: I don't know my old baby shark. Oh yeah yeah.
- 14:43Speaker 4: So I'm just I love that that's what you called it.
- 14:47Speaker 3: I mean, Laurie, I'm picking you as my leader, as
- 14:51Speaker 3: the cool hip grandma that I will be one day.
- 14:54Speaker 2: I'm not going with anyone else.
- 14:56Speaker 3: I love your style and I I love the creative
- 15:01Speaker 3: process that you have because I do. I am an
- 15:03Speaker 3: empty nester right now and I was dancing in my
- 15:06Speaker 3: house this morning and my dogs are like, what's happening?
- 15:09Speaker 4: You know?
- 15:10Speaker 3: So it's very catchy. And so you see the adults,
- 15:14Speaker 3: I mean, do they come up to you. And you
- 15:16Speaker 3: may have some adults that are like, oh my gosh,
- 15:19Speaker 3: if I hear pig on my head one more time
- 15:21Speaker 3: in my car, or that you have it that they
- 15:24Speaker 3: love it, love to see their child so happy. I mean,
- 15:26Speaker 3: is there a meet in the middle kind of thing?
- 15:29Speaker 3: Because like if I drive a thousand and one miles
- 15:32Speaker 3: and I hear a little Mermaid go on in my
- 15:34Speaker 3: back seat one more time, you know what I mean?
- 15:38Speaker 2: Do you ever get that from adults?
- 15:41Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, definitely, I don't. They're kind, Yeah, don't. Usually
- 15:49Speaker 4: when they meet me, that's not the first thing they'll say.
- 15:52Speaker 4: But definitely. I have, like in like one hundred comments
- 15:58Speaker 4: on a social media post of everybody saying I love
- 16:00Speaker 4: the song, this song's abop, I you know this music
- 16:03Speaker 4: is was the soundtrack to my kid's childhood. That'll be
- 16:05Speaker 4: one person saying no offense. But if I hear you
- 16:08Speaker 4: know whatever Victor Vito one more time, I'm gonna blow
- 16:11Speaker 4: my brains up.
- 16:14Speaker 2: Yeah, right right. I think that's natural sometimes with being
- 16:18Speaker 2: a parent.
- 16:18Speaker 1: But for some are so catchy, like I know it,
- 16:21Speaker 1: I know a chicken. I love that song. I could
- 16:23Speaker 1: sing that all day. Look so yeah, you get you
- 16:26Speaker 1: get kind of excited about it. Well, we would love
- 16:28Speaker 1: love love. I'd be amazing, as we say on the
- 16:31Speaker 1: Mom's Club, if you could sing a little for us.
- 16:34Speaker 1: I know your new album is coming out Walking with Penguins,
- 16:37Speaker 1: Is that you're going to be singing a little bit
- 16:39Speaker 1: for us here today.
- 16:39Speaker 2: Oh wow, this is.
- 16:40Speaker 4: I just happened to have a guitar here.
- 16:43Speaker 5: Today, I happen to have a penguin when I yes,
- 16:49Speaker 5: I'm just gonna say, yeah, it was meant to be today.
- 16:55Speaker 4: I'm just gonna I'll just play you a little bit
- 16:57Speaker 4: of it because otherwise it'll probably be too long. But
- 17:00Speaker 4: it's yeah, it's called Walking with the Penguins. And I
- 17:02Speaker 4: want to say something about it, which is that when
- 17:05Speaker 4: I came up with this song, it just responding to
- 17:09Speaker 4: your question before about what how do I come up
- 17:12Speaker 4: with ideas? This was like, first of all, I get
- 17:15Speaker 4: lots of requests from parents and teachers, what can you
- 17:19Speaker 4: please write a song about X? And I actually started
- 17:22Speaker 4: getting requests for penguin songs because a lot of teachers
- 17:26Speaker 4: do like a cold weather unit at school, and they
- 17:30Speaker 4: were like, there are no penguin songs? Can you please
- 17:33Speaker 4: write a penguin song? Which is I think Raffi has
- 17:37Speaker 4: a penguin album out, Penny the Penguin he just brought recently.
- 17:40Speaker 4: But anyway, so I'm jumping on there. I jumped in
- 17:43Speaker 4: there with the penguin song, and I was thinking about
- 17:45Speaker 4: it and like, how do I make it, What what
- 17:48Speaker 4: do I what's you know? It will be fun? What's interesting?
- 17:51Speaker 4: I always like to think from the child's point of view.
- 17:54Speaker 4: And someone who I work with, Michelle Ash, who actually
- 17:57Speaker 4: dances with me a lot of times. She's happy as
- 18:00Speaker 4: a dancer as well as often my tour manager, she
- 18:04Speaker 4: showed me this picture of in a Basel, Switzerland, they
- 18:08Speaker 4: take the penguins out at the zoo and they walk
- 18:12Speaker 4: them around the zoo for a walk, and I was like,
- 18:15Speaker 4: oh my god, walking with the penguins. That would be
- 18:19Speaker 4: a really fun song. So so, and one more thing
- 18:22Speaker 4: about it, which is like thinking about from the child's
- 18:25Speaker 4: point of view, I thought, well, what if it's a kid.
- 18:28Speaker 4: What if I'm this person singing as a kid at
- 18:31Speaker 4: school or somewhere where they have to be sitting and
- 18:34Speaker 4: they don't want to be because they're like fidgety and
- 18:36Speaker 4: they just want to get up, and they keep imagining
- 18:39Speaker 4: they're a penguin and they can't stop themselves from jumping
- 18:42Speaker 4: up and walking with the penguins. So that's what this
- 18:45Speaker 4: song is about. I'm sitting down, but I feel kind
- 18:54Speaker 4: of funny. I shake my dark back and I rub
- 18:58Speaker 4: my wife Tommy I try, I stay still, but my
- 19:02Speaker 4: body won't listen, and suddenly I'm in up penguin poses
- 19:12Speaker 4: with the penguins.
- 19:15Speaker 6: With the penguins, don't heal you?
- 19:19Speaker 4: Waa, I don't heal.
- 19:20Speaker 6: You hip hop the penguins, the penguins don't heal you,
- 19:31Speaker 6: heal you, but heal you. We don't want to stop.
- 19:36Speaker 4: Oh my gosh.
- 19:38Speaker 1: Yeah, I'm gonna be singing that all day.
- 19:40Speaker 2: I can't.
- 19:41Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 19:41Speaker 1: If you ever segue to like, as we're all getting older,
- 19:45Speaker 1: senior citizen music, maybe you can have one called walking
- 19:48Speaker 1: like a Penguin, because I feel like some days I'm
- 19:50Speaker 1: more like that.
- 19:51Speaker 2: Are you walking with your walker?
- 19:52Speaker 1: Yeah? Yeah, but no, I love that. I love that.
- 19:56Speaker 1: Now I understand.
- 19:57Speaker 3: Did you?
- 19:57Speaker 1: Are you releasing also an them completely in Spanish of
- 20:01Speaker 1: your songs? Is that coming out soon?
- 20:03Speaker 4: A five song ep? Oh?
- 20:05Speaker 7: That's awesome, incredible, right, Because a few years ago I
- 20:09Speaker 7: recorded one of my more well known songs, We Are
- 20:13Speaker 7: the Dinosaurs, in Spanish.
- 20:16Speaker 4: I thought that it just was so nice to have
- 20:19Speaker 4: something in another language so that more kids and families
- 20:23Speaker 4: could listen. I thought it would be really nice to
- 20:25Speaker 4: do some other songs, and I had also written a
- 20:27Speaker 4: song about the Spanish alphabet or the alphabet in Spanish.
- 20:31Speaker 2: Are you fluent in Spanish?
- 20:34Speaker 1: Not at all.
- 20:36Speaker 4: I took French, but I had I had someone translate
- 20:40Speaker 4: them for me, and of course I know what I'm
- 20:42Speaker 4: singing when I'm singing those songs. And she she coached
- 20:47Speaker 4: me in the studio and she I was like, can
- 20:52Speaker 4: I is this credible? Like does this seem like I
- 20:55Speaker 4: actually can speak Spanish? And she was like yes, So
- 21:00Speaker 4: I did it. It was so exciting. I mean, I
- 21:03Speaker 4: have taken Spanish lessons as an adult actually because I
- 21:06Speaker 4: I can't believe that I don't know how to speak Spanish.
- 21:09Speaker 4: But they're the same, right, right, But French only gets
- 21:13Speaker 4: you so far in so many anyway, so it was exciting. Yeah.
- 21:17Speaker 1: Yeah, I took French in college and we went to
- 21:20Speaker 1: Napoleon's tomb and we were kind of lost, and so
- 21:22Speaker 1: I walked up to the guy and I said, oohe
- 21:25Speaker 1: la tomb and he said, it's down the road, It's
- 21:28Speaker 1: down the hall to the right. I mean, it was
- 21:30Speaker 1: clear that I didn't know what I was doing. So, yes,
- 21:32Speaker 1: French is beautiful, but yeah, Spanish would probably be a
- 21:34Speaker 1: little bit.
- 21:35Speaker 3: More Practiceah and I was an our inn in the er.
- 21:37Speaker 3: It would have been super helpful to be able to
- 21:41Speaker 3: speak Spanish.
- 21:42Speaker 2: Yeah, Well, do you have.
- 21:43Speaker 1: A favorite song? I mean, I mean they're probably all
- 21:45Speaker 1: your babies, But do you have one that you're like
- 21:48Speaker 1: you hum in the shower, You're like, I love this song.
- 21:50Speaker 1: This this kind of like oh mister Son's Son that
- 21:54Speaker 1: my mom keeps singing all the time. Is there a favorite?
- 21:59Speaker 4: I mean, you're right, that are they are on my babies.
- 22:02Speaker 4: But I do really enjoy singing Chipmunk at the gas pump.
- 22:07Speaker 3: Oh my god, stop Lori. I mean, I can't take it.
- 22:13Speaker 3: I love that so much. Yeah, I love that so much.
- 22:16Speaker 2: I love it. I'll be listening to that one on
- 22:18Speaker 2: the way home for sure.
- 22:20Speaker 1: Are there are there any songs that you thought, oh,
- 22:23Speaker 1: this is gonna be a big hit with the kids
- 22:26Speaker 1: it and it didn't go like you thought? And there
- 22:28Speaker 1: are there any of that surprised you, like, oh wait,
- 22:31Speaker 1: I didn't think that was gonna be so as popular.
- 22:32Speaker 1: Now they're jumping up and down and they're so excited.
- 22:35Speaker 4: Yes, yes, and yes, Like I I feel like I'm
- 22:39Speaker 4: actually not very good at being able to tell a song.
- 22:42Speaker 4: It's gonna hit or not, Like I have a one.
- 22:45Speaker 4: I have one called Just like the Sun that I
- 22:47Speaker 4: wrote years ago, and I think like once in the
- 22:52Speaker 4: twenty five or whatever years that it's been out, somebody
- 22:55Speaker 4: has mentioned it to me, and it was like one
- 22:58Speaker 4: of my favorite songs. And it was basically like, I
- 23:01Speaker 4: went out today and I saw the sun, saw the
- 23:04Speaker 4: sun rise open up its size. I saw the sun rise,
- 23:08Speaker 4: and then it's I'm just like the sun, and I
- 23:10Speaker 4: saw it go to bed, I saw the sun set.
- 23:13Speaker 4: I saw the sun shine, and I shine like the sun.
- 23:15Speaker 4: And I like that song made me cry every time
- 23:18Speaker 4: I sang it, and like nobody ever mentions it, but
- 23:21Speaker 4: I had to have one yoga teacher who was like,
- 23:24Speaker 4: this one's great with hula hoops.
- 23:26Speaker 3: So that I'd need to know where everyone's demanding bananas?
- 23:30Speaker 2: Did I say that?
- 23:31Speaker 4: Right? Like that?
- 23:32Speaker 2: I mean, where did that come from?
- 23:36Speaker 8: That?
- 23:36Speaker 6: Was?
- 23:37Speaker 4: I mean? Really, the best songs come from things that
- 23:39Speaker 4: kids say. I will just put that out there. It's
- 23:42Speaker 4: nothing to do with me. Every one's demanding bananas, Well
- 23:46Speaker 4: it was, I guess it was the parent, but it
- 23:47Speaker 4: was because of the kids. I was working with Cas Berger,
- 23:53Speaker 4: who is this incredible illustrator who also has a wonderful
- 23:57Speaker 4: kid's book.
- 23:57Speaker 9: Out actually who I was on a Zoom call with
- 24:04Speaker 9: her talking about some illustrations and she has two young kids,
- 24:09Speaker 9: and she was like, you know when people walk through
- 24:11Speaker 9: the house on zoom and they're like.
- 24:12Speaker 4: Okay, okay, okay, I'll get that for you in a second,
- 24:14Speaker 4: like trying to have a meeting, and you're trying to
- 24:17Speaker 4: have a meeting, and she was like, okay, just hold on.
- 24:18Speaker 4: She's like, everyone's demanding bananas.
- 24:21Speaker 2: I don't And I was.
- 24:23Speaker 4: Like, oh my god.
- 24:27Speaker 3: Yeah, I think that's gonna be one of my favorites
- 24:30Speaker 3: that's coming out on the album.
- 24:31Speaker 1: Correct, yes, oh yeah. So what are some others that
- 24:35Speaker 1: they can look forward to? What are some other titles
- 24:37Speaker 1: we should listen to on the new album?
- 24:40Speaker 4: Yeah? Another another one that has been doing really well
- 24:44Speaker 4: is My Bunny goes Hop, which is a little of
- 24:48Speaker 4: like my Bunny goes My money goes Hop Hop? Up,
- 24:51Speaker 4: My Money goes Hop Hop?
- 24:52Speaker 8: Up?
- 24:52Speaker 4: Does my gun Bunny go a rough? Rough rough?
- 24:54Speaker 9: No.
- 24:55Speaker 4: That's a lot from those you know, those books that
- 24:59Speaker 4: are like my dog is that my dog?
- 25:01Speaker 8: No?
- 25:01Speaker 4: My dog is fluffy? You know. So yeah, and I
- 25:04Speaker 4: had this was actually Michelle's daughter would do that like that,
- 25:10Speaker 4: mom My buddy doesn't say rough rough rouff, my bunny
- 25:13Speaker 4: doesn't say now now. And so I and her bunny's
- 25:16Speaker 4: name was hop and I thought, oh, that would be
- 25:18Speaker 4: a really fun song to write. So that's on there.
- 25:21Speaker 4: Onyxy Octopus had a lot of requests for octopus songs.
- 25:25Speaker 4: These are there are a lot of animal songs, which
- 25:27Speaker 4: is always good, and that one's more like some octopus
- 25:32Speaker 4: facts because people should know about octopus.
- 25:36Speaker 1: They should.
- 25:37Speaker 4: Yeah, So those those are someones that are coming up
- 25:41Speaker 4: on that.
- 25:42Speaker 1: Well that but we're looking forward to it as well
- 25:44Speaker 1: as some ladies that want to join us and ask
- 25:46Speaker 1: you some questions. And those are our zoomer moms. Welcome,
- 25:50Speaker 1: Zoomer moms, Welcome to the Mom's Club. Hello ladies. Well,
- 25:53Speaker 1: I'm going to introduce you. Tell us a little bit
- 25:56Speaker 1: about yourself, where you're from, and if you have a
- 25:59Speaker 1: question for Lori, Lisa, welcome to the Mom's Club.
- 26:03Speaker 2: Thank you, Lisa wins in here.
- 26:06Speaker 8: I'm from an area near Fort Worth, Texas. And Laura,
- 26:11Speaker 8: I'm just so inspired with what you're doing with all
- 26:14Speaker 8: of your music, and I know that there's a lot
- 26:16Speaker 8: of children who think, oh, I want to do that.
- 26:20Speaker 2: So if a child is interested in.
- 26:22Speaker 8: Learning how to play the guitar learning music, at what
- 26:25Speaker 8: age would you suggest would be the best age to
- 26:30Speaker 8: start introducing them and letting them take.
- 26:33Speaker 4: That on guitar is I'm just thinking about it because
- 26:39Speaker 4: there's some different aspects to it. One is that if
- 26:41Speaker 4: you play an acoustic guitar, it's actually kind of painful
- 26:45Speaker 4: when you start. You have to build calluses up on
- 26:48Speaker 4: your fingers. So I used to teach kids starting around
- 26:52Speaker 4: eight years old, and they about half of them would
- 26:56Speaker 4: give it up because it hurt. And so one thing
- 26:59Speaker 4: to do, you can electric guitars don't really hurt, so
- 27:04Speaker 4: if that's okay in your household too quiet, if you're
- 27:08Speaker 4: not using a nap. The other thing is if they
- 27:12Speaker 4: start on piano, there is a much more visual kind
- 27:17Speaker 4: of map of how chords work on a piano, and
- 27:21Speaker 4: if you play a little piano first, it's very easy
- 27:24Speaker 4: to move to guitar. That's I mean, I played a
- 27:26Speaker 4: bunch of instruments. I didn't ever even pick up guitar
- 27:29Speaker 4: until I was seventeen, but I had played violin in
- 27:33Speaker 4: middle school I had played piano since I was seven.
- 27:37Speaker 4: I played clarinet, like I had learned a lot of
- 27:39Speaker 4: other instruments that made it very easy. And I taught
- 27:43Speaker 4: myself guitar when I started. So but I'm not saying
- 27:47Speaker 4: you shouldn't do it with young kids. I think absolutely,
- 27:50Speaker 4: if someone's interested, you want to follow that excitement, right.
- 27:53Speaker 4: You just don't also want it to die too early
- 27:56Speaker 4: if it is they're not like physically ready for the
- 28:00Speaker 4: demanding this of it.
- 28:02Speaker 1: That's a great question.
- 28:03Speaker 2: That's interesting, you know, and it becomes painful. So they well,
- 28:06Speaker 2: I played the guitar for a year, you did.
- 28:09Speaker 1: I did. I took guitar lessons. I know what she's
- 28:11Speaker 1: talking about, the calluses because I was one of those quitters.
- 28:14Speaker 1: You know, I want you to do that.
- 28:17Speaker 4: Really, it's so sad, yeah, I mean, and also even
- 28:20Speaker 4: the pick part, like if you're not holding pick, or
- 28:22Speaker 4: even if you are, you can get a blister on
- 28:23Speaker 4: your finger. Like all of it goes away from practice,
- 28:27Speaker 4: but you do have to kind of push through that.
- 28:30Speaker 1: Janine, welcome to the Mom's Club. Tell us a little
- 28:33Speaker 1: bit about yourself, and do you have a question for Laurie.
- 28:35Speaker 8: Oh?
- 28:36Speaker 10: Absolutely, Hi, I am Janine and I'm from Austin, Texas,
- 28:40Speaker 10: and i am the mother of a wonderful daughter and
- 28:44Speaker 10: the stepmother to a phenomenal, phenomenal lady who happens to
- 28:49Speaker 10: be the mom of our grandsons. And I'm just happy
- 28:53Speaker 10: to be here with you. I am coming to my
- 28:56Speaker 10: question from my experiences having been an el elementary teacher
- 29:00Speaker 10: for many years, and over the years, I've had many
- 29:05Speaker 10: students who have had a wide range of special needs.
- 29:11Speaker 10: Could be you know, it could be neurological, it could
- 29:14Speaker 10: be straight physical, it could be just so many different things,
- 29:18Speaker 10: and experiencing music with these kiddos can be similar to anybodies,
- 29:28Speaker 10: but then there there are some ways that children respond
- 29:33Speaker 10: to music differently. I'm curious as to what maybe some
- 29:38Speaker 10: of your experiences have been with children who maybe the
- 29:43Speaker 10: approach to music might look a little different, and how
- 29:47Speaker 10: you've been able to relate to that.
- 29:49Speaker 4: I definitely have a lot of fans who are have
- 29:55Speaker 4: all different kinds of support needs, and from like very
- 30:02Speaker 4: young children to young adults who have been listening to
- 30:05Speaker 4: my music since they were little kids and are still
- 30:08Speaker 4: huge fans and come to the shows and are Patreon
- 30:10Speaker 4: members and like are really like very involved. So and
- 30:14Speaker 4: some of them are you know, have a lot of
- 30:19Speaker 4: have cannot move parts of their bodies or can't you know,
- 30:22Speaker 4: can't control them in the same way that somebody else might.
- 30:24Speaker 4: And and some of it is anyway, so many different things.
- 30:28Speaker 4: So one of the things that I think about a lot,
- 30:32Speaker 4: I mean part of it is when I'm singing a
- 30:35Speaker 4: song live, I do think a lot about encouraging and
- 30:40Speaker 4: talking about different ways that any way that anyone can
- 30:45Speaker 4: be get involved with the song, because I do write
- 30:48Speaker 4: it's say eighty to ninety percent of my songs to
- 30:51Speaker 4: be almost like physically interactive, that like they can do
- 30:57Speaker 4: it any way that works for them, you know, if
- 30:59Speaker 4: I might be jumping up and down, but like when
- 31:02Speaker 4: I'm singing rocket Ship Run and we're blasting off, but
- 31:05Speaker 4: I'll always start that song saying if you want to
- 31:08Speaker 4: move your head to blast off, or your arms or
- 31:11Speaker 4: jump with us, or have someone help you or lift you, like,
- 31:14Speaker 4: any way you do it is the right way to
- 31:16Speaker 4: do it. So that's one thing that I try to
- 31:18Speaker 4: think about and model lots of different ways. Also for
- 31:23Speaker 4: people who have sight problems. If I'm doing hand motions,
- 31:30Speaker 4: I try to say what I'm doing at the same
- 31:33Speaker 4: time as actually doing them so that they can imagine
- 31:37Speaker 4: it and also participate if they want to. And then
- 31:41Speaker 4: in terms of writing songs, I do also try to
- 31:44Speaker 4: think about writing songs in ways that are as inclusive
- 31:48Speaker 4: as possible, so, you know, and the more that I
- 31:51Speaker 4: learn about different needs that people have, the better I
- 31:56Speaker 4: can be at writing songs like that. But that's also
- 31:59Speaker 4: been a long learning process for me and and kind
- 32:04Speaker 4: of an exciting one honestly, because it feels so good
- 32:08Speaker 4: to be able to create a song that I know
- 32:10Speaker 4: somebody is going to say, like, this song made me
- 32:13Speaker 4: feel included.
- 32:14Speaker 1: You know, that's great and thank you zoomer moms. Those
- 32:18Speaker 1: are as always great great questions. So, Laurie, I know
- 32:23Speaker 1: you started your career in rock music. Do you do
- 32:27Speaker 1: you ever if you could pick an artist in another
- 32:30Speaker 1: genre to write with, who would it be and what
- 32:35Speaker 1: do you think the sound would what would you be
- 32:37Speaker 1: looking for, like a cool kids song or a country
- 32:42Speaker 1: song like do you what would that be?
- 32:47Speaker 4: I mean, it's so funny. I'm actually collaborating with song
- 32:50Speaker 4: right now Who's Who's a rapper? And so that's sort
- 32:53Speaker 4: of been interesting. I mean he raps kids music. But
- 32:59Speaker 4: also the first person who came to mind just from
- 33:02Speaker 4: my like love growing up and of someone who is
- 33:07Speaker 4: still really doing amazing things in music is David Byrne,
- 33:11Speaker 4: just because it's such a broad range kinds of music
- 33:15Speaker 4: that he has created, and he's so inventive and also
- 33:21Speaker 4: a very I mean, I don't know, I heard some
- 33:24Speaker 4: not so great things about some Broadway stuff, but anyway, yeah,
- 33:28Speaker 4: and that he's perfect, and I would love to and
- 33:33Speaker 4: do something like just I mean, anything that came out
- 33:36Speaker 4: of it. It doesn't have to be anything specific. I
- 33:38Speaker 4: think when I write, I mean, I have an entire
- 33:41Speaker 4: album of dance remixes of my songs that are you know,
- 33:46Speaker 4: and it's just like been that was so fun to
- 33:49Speaker 4: try exploring what it felt like to be in the
- 33:53Speaker 4: studio and create music that was outside of me sitting
- 33:57Speaker 4: there playing my guitar that basically had nothing to do
- 33:59Speaker 4: with a guitar. And so I feel open to just
- 34:04Speaker 4: like whatever I would enjoy, you know, I'd be interested
- 34:07Speaker 4: to find.
- 34:07Speaker 2: That, first of all, excellent choice.
- 34:10Speaker 3: Anything he does would be magic, and especially with you,
- 34:15Speaker 3: I mean, that would be That's a good question, Monica.
- 34:18Speaker 1: Thank you. Thank you, Julie.
- 34:20Speaker 2: You problem.
- 34:20Speaker 1: That's why I'm the host now I'm kidding anyway, this
- 34:24Speaker 1: is true, that is true. Well, no, we've really really
- 34:27Speaker 1: enjoyed this. This has been amazing. As we say here
- 34:30Speaker 1: on the Mom's Club, Where can where can our audience
- 34:33Speaker 1: find you? Like, are you going to be touring soon?
- 34:36Speaker 1: And where can they find you in social media? And
- 34:38Speaker 1: when exactly is your next album going to drop so
- 34:40Speaker 1: they can be looking for it.
- 34:43Speaker 4: Yeah, so the album's coming out in June. I think
- 34:46Speaker 4: it's June twenty sixth I should have looked that up
- 34:48Speaker 4: before I got here, but I think it's the end
- 34:50Speaker 4: of June. And I'm on the best places the videos
- 34:56Speaker 4: that I make probably on YouTube or listening to music
- 34:59Speaker 4: streat on all you know, Apple Music, Spotify, anywhere that
- 35:02Speaker 4: you listen to streaming music you can find me. But
- 35:06Speaker 4: and on social media TikTok, Instagram, Facebook are sort of
- 35:11Speaker 4: the main places that I hang out and I'm when
- 35:14Speaker 4: I play live all the time. So like this weekend,
- 35:17Speaker 4: these shows are sold out in Maryland. We have a
- 35:19Speaker 4: couple of shows I play, sometimes by myself solo, sometimes
- 35:23Speaker 4: I'll have Michelle joined me dancing on stage. And this
- 35:26Speaker 4: weekend we're playing with the whole band and Michelle, which
- 35:30Speaker 4: is going to be super fun. But then I'll be
- 35:31Speaker 4: in in Fort Lauderdale and Atlanta the following weekend. Actually,
- 35:36Speaker 4: I'm coming to Texas in April.
