Latest / Foul Territory / Ken Rosenthal's Inside Scoop: NL East trade race, Angels selling soon? Padres quiet star bats
Transcript
- 0:05Speaker 1: Let's hit the inside scoop with the FT senior insider
- 0:07Speaker 1: Ken Rosenthal. So, Ken, let's talk about trades and starting pitching.
- 0:11Speaker 1: I have a question for you and it relates to
- 0:13Speaker 1: the two teams we're going to bring up first. So
- 0:14Speaker 1: I love when teams are like, oh, yeah, we're not
- 0:16Speaker 1: really looking for pitching. You're not looking for pitching until
- 0:18Speaker 1: you are right. We just talked about how Aaron Nola
- 0:20Speaker 1: had another bad outing, and for the Braves, they've had
- 0:23Speaker 1: their rotation kind of fall apart quickly among other ball clubs.
- 0:26Speaker 1: But let's start with the NL East and those two teams.
- 0:28Speaker 1: Your thoughts on how this is shaping up right now,
- 0:31Speaker 1: this race and how it could affect their trade deadline plans.
- 0:34Speaker 2: Matt Gilban Charlotte Varnes of The Athletic have already reported
- 0:38Speaker 2: Scott about the Phillies search for more of a back
- 0:43Speaker 2: end starter swing type, a person or pitcher who could
- 0:47Speaker 2: pitch in long relief and also give you occasional spot starts.
- 0:50Speaker 3: That would seem to be enough for them.
- 0:53Speaker 2: They have three great starters, of course, in Sanchez.
- 0:56Speaker 3: And Wheeler and Lozarto. Nola struggling obviously.
- 1:00Speaker 2: So maybe now they need a little bit more than
- 1:02Speaker 2: what they thought initially. But that type of pitcher that
- 1:05Speaker 2: they described to Matt and Charlotte would have been the
- 1:10Speaker 2: replacement for Painter, or theoretically was the replacement for Painter.
- 1:13Speaker 2: They haven't acquired that picture yet, but that is what
- 1:16Speaker 2: they were looking for. The question with them now becomes, Okay,
- 1:20Speaker 2: do you need maybe someone a little bit more established
- 1:23Speaker 2: as well as that swing type.
- 1:26Speaker 3: So that's the Phillies.
- 1:28Speaker 2: The Braves are in a different place because right now,
- 1:31Speaker 2: and Mark Bowman of MLB dot Com put this really
- 1:33Speaker 2: well the other day, you start a playoff service with
- 1:36Speaker 2: the Atlanta Braves right now, Chris Selle, of course pitches
- 1:39Speaker 2: game one. Martin Perez would probably be game two at
- 1:44Speaker 2: this moment. And he's a guy they DFA, they re
- 1:47Speaker 2: signed him. He's not anyone's idea of a game to starter. Necessarily.
- 1:53Speaker 2: Lewis pitched quite well this year. Bryce Elder has regressed,
- 1:58Speaker 2: Grant Holmes has done hey, but he's a guy with
- 2:01Speaker 2: the potential for injury at any time. He has an
- 2:05Speaker 2: UCL issue. I believe that he's kind of just maintaining
- 2:08Speaker 2: things with and while they've got Smith Shavor coming on
- 2:11Speaker 2: a rehab assignment and Hurston Wald rep and they.
- 2:13Speaker 3: Have some pieces.
- 2:15Speaker 2: They clearly need what they talked about getting in the
- 2:19Speaker 2: off season, which is a starting pitcher who could start
- 2:23Speaker 2: a playoff game. They need that more urgently now than
- 2:26Speaker 2: they did even in the offseason when we didn't know
- 2:29Speaker 2: yet that some of the pictures they had Schwellenbach, Strider,
- 2:33Speaker 2: et cetera would be injured.
- 2:36Speaker 4: Is that gonna speed And I feel like I asked
- 2:38Speaker 4: you this every other week, but is that gonna speed
- 2:41Speaker 4: up the timing? And you always say that's just gonna
- 2:43Speaker 4: be like right until the end. But you talked about
- 2:46Speaker 4: a team in the Phillies who wants maybe like a
- 2:48Speaker 4: four or five, a back end type of person that
- 2:50Speaker 4: feels like, Okay, I'm gonna go and get that at
- 2:53Speaker 4: you know, at any time and we'll get three extra starts.
- 2:56Speaker 4: Will any of this speed up the timing of these moves,
- 2:59Speaker 4: especially since they're both in the East and it's like
- 3:01Speaker 4: we could be vine for the same person.
- 3:04Speaker 3: Eric, It's not out of the question.
- 3:05Speaker 2: And just look to last week when the Cubs acquired
- 3:08Speaker 2: David Peterson.
- 3:09Speaker 3: From the Mets.
- 3:10Speaker 2: He is not a front of the rotation guy at
- 3:12Speaker 2: this point. He is not someone you would necessarily count
- 3:15Speaker 2: on to start a playoff game, but can he get
- 3:18Speaker 2: you through the season, which is what we're talking about
- 3:20Speaker 2: with the Phillies in particular, but also the Braves. Yeah,
- 3:23Speaker 2: he's that kind of pitcher. So I would not be
- 3:27Speaker 2: shocked to see either one of these teams, particularly the Braves,
- 3:31Speaker 2: make that kind of move. But you're not going to
- 3:34Speaker 2: see Freddy Parolta traded in the next two weeks. You're
- 3:37Speaker 2: not going to see Cheric Scoogle traded.
- 3:39Speaker 3: In the next two weeks.
- 3:39Speaker 2: Those deals, the bigger ones would come closer to the deadline.
- 3:45Speaker 1: Hey, Ken, I want to take you to the Angels,
- 3:48Speaker 1: and you know you covered this on fair territory in
- 3:50Speaker 1: terms of the actual move, miss alac Perry, whatever, I
- 3:54Speaker 1: want to go to the trade assets. Do you think
- 3:56Speaker 1: that this ups the percentage chance that a team like
- 3:59Speaker 1: the Angels get it's more aggressive with their deals, And
- 4:02Speaker 1: this is a team that we already know is out
- 4:04Speaker 1: of it, So maybe this is a team that does
- 4:06Speaker 1: some flyers a little bit early. It seems like the
- 4:09Speaker 1: Giants are doing that too on the National League side,
- 4:11Speaker 1: So curious what you think this could look like with
- 4:14Speaker 1: someone who I think will be a little tougher with
- 4:17Speaker 1: those ahead of him, right president and owner being like, Hey,
- 4:20Speaker 1: this is what we need to do. This why you
- 4:21Speaker 1: brought me in? Did you get that feel at all?
- 4:22Speaker 1: From what Mozzelac said with Moreno, he's too much of
- 4:25Speaker 1: a fan.
- 4:25Speaker 2: He kind of said, Scott, you're asking me to read
- 4:29Speaker 2: Artie Moreno's mind, and that is something that I'm clearly
- 4:32Speaker 2: not capable of doing. I don't know that anyone is,
- 4:34Speaker 2: maybe even his own wife. So seriously, I don't know
- 4:38Speaker 2: what they're going to do. And it's interesting to me
- 4:41Speaker 2: that they brought in John Mozzelac, who clearly is experienced
- 4:44Speaker 2: as a head of baseball operations. The three previous people
- 4:48Speaker 2: that Moreno hired for that job, Jerry Depoto, Billy Eppler,
- 4:52Speaker 2: and of course Perrimanezien, those guys were first time GM's.
- 4:56Speaker 2: Now the Poto had had like two months as an
- 4:59Speaker 2: interim with Arizona, but this is something of a departure
- 5:03Speaker 2: for them, and that is what is so intriguing about
- 5:06Speaker 2: the hiring of Mazaalak. Will it actually change their method
- 5:10Speaker 2: of operation? Now, what we know from the past is
- 5:14Speaker 2: that Artie Moreno does not like to sell, does not
- 5:16Speaker 2: like to rebuild, also does not like to spend enough
- 5:18Speaker 2: to put a quality product on the field.
- 5:21Speaker 3: So these teams, whoever the head of base operation.
- 5:25Speaker 2: Is, is inevitably caught in the middle.
- 5:28Speaker 3: They are inevitably caught in the middle.
- 5:30Speaker 2: And that's where the Angels have been now for quite
- 5:31Speaker 2: some time, and they haven't been very good at it,
- 5:33Speaker 2: because they really have not even been a mediocre team.
- 5:36Speaker 3: They've been a bad team.
- 5:38Speaker 2: So the question then becomes, well, Okay, what is it
- 5:41Speaker 2: going to be with this dynamic? And I don't know
- 5:45Speaker 2: that any of us can predict with any confidence what
- 5:50Speaker 2: Artie Moreno might be thinking.
- 5:52Speaker 3: Right, and let's say he is.
- 5:54Speaker 4: Let's say let's say Artie Moreno says, Okay, Monna, you're
- 5:58Speaker 4: gonna do what you do. I want you to make
- 5:59Speaker 4: this organization better. I trust you. It is obviously a theory.
- 6:04Speaker 4: Do they have somebody outside of the big the big
- 6:07Speaker 4: three that we're talking about Joe Adele, det Meers and
- 6:10Speaker 4: Jose Soriano, that a GM who's aggressive to really push
- 6:15Speaker 4: a plan that would help the organization move forward? To
- 6:18Speaker 4: the Angels have somebody like that.
- 6:22Speaker 3: I'm not sure I understanding to.
- 6:23Speaker 4: Trade somebody to trade outside of outside of a Dell.
- 6:28Speaker 2: Dak netto three more years of control after this one.
- 6:31Speaker 2: He's a shortstop, and most teams are relatively set at
- 6:34Speaker 2: short so that's not a move you seek. You often
- 6:37Speaker 2: see it the deadline position. Players are a little bit
- 6:40Speaker 2: more difficult in some cases to trade at the deadline,
- 6:42Speaker 2: except when a team a buyer has an obvious need.
- 6:46Speaker 2: And I don't know that there are many teams out
- 6:49Speaker 2: there where shortstop would be the position that they're trying
- 6:52Speaker 2: to upgrade. Most teams, not all. I'm sure I'm missing
- 6:55Speaker 2: someone is, or most teams are set at that position.
- 6:59Speaker 3: So Netta would be the guy.
- 7:01Speaker 2: But you've mentioned the ones that are the most intriguing,
- 7:04Speaker 2: and that would be Detmer's and Soriano. And those two
- 7:07Speaker 2: guys both left handed starters with two I'm sorry, both
- 7:10Speaker 2: starting pitchers not left handed necessarily, Soriano is not with
- 7:14Speaker 2: two years of additional control remaining. That is something that
- 7:17Speaker 2: could move the needle.
- 7:21Speaker 1: People dehydration sucks. Quint's electrolyte stick packs to the rescue.
- 7:27Speaker 1: I order them, I use them all of the time.
- 7:31Speaker 5: Somebody who may or may not have had some adult
- 7:33Speaker 5: beverages in their life. The next day, you know what flavor?
- 7:35Speaker 5: I like watermelon and I don't like watermelon. I'll go
- 7:38Speaker 5: raspberry and it helps me to get my citrus salt in.
- 7:42Speaker 5: But if I do, it helps me to get back
- 7:44Speaker 5: to normal, feeling good and ready to go the next day.
- 7:47Speaker 1: Yep, tough workout or dry mom mouth in the morning,
- 7:49Speaker 1: whatever it is, this is going to help you out.
- 7:52Speaker 1: Quint always has the best deals for you. You can
- 7:54Speaker 1: go on their website and see a number of products.
- 7:57Speaker 1: We're talking about not only a product that tastes great,
- 7:59Speaker 1: but zero sugar options that are also Stevia free. Give
- 8:03Speaker 1: your body what it really needs to stay hydrated. Go
- 8:05Speaker 1: to quins dot com slash foul for free shipping on
- 8:07Speaker 1: your order in three sixty five day returns. That's Qui
- 8:10Speaker 1: n ce dot com slash foul for free shipping and
- 8:13Speaker 1: three sixty five day returns quins dot com slash foul.
- 8:15Speaker 1: These statements have not been evaluated by the FEUD and
- 8:17Speaker 1: Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure,
- 8:20Speaker 1: or prevent any disease.
- 8:22Speaker 4: All right, Well, the angels are out of it. In
- 8:24Speaker 4: a brutal American League. You wrote about how the Red
- 8:28Speaker 4: Sox are somehow in it. How do we evaluate the
- 8:31Speaker 4: American League and the teams that are actually in it?
- 8:34Speaker 4: Because the American League's not very good, and if you're
- 8:37Speaker 4: saying after a four game sweep, the Red Sox are
- 8:39Speaker 4: in it, I feel like everybody's got life.
- 8:42Speaker 3: Eric.
- 8:43Speaker 2: That was written a little bit tongue in cheek, and
- 8:45Speaker 2: I tried to make it as clear as possible for
- 8:47Speaker 2: the people out there who are quite serious and quite
- 8:51Speaker 2: literal often about what they're reading, and I had words
- 8:54Speaker 2: in there, like to think of them as a true
- 8:57Speaker 2: contender is kind of laughable. But some people still didn't
- 9:01Speaker 2: quite get it. What I was saying is that when
- 9:05Speaker 2: a team like the Red Sox suddenly plays a little
- 9:07Speaker 2: bit better, their roster is a little bit better place,
- 9:10Speaker 2: actually a much better place in some respects, and they're
- 9:13Speaker 2: four and a half games out in the wildcard in
- 9:15Speaker 2: a bad league.
- 9:16Speaker 3: Yeah, they can dream.
- 9:19Speaker 2: Now.
- 9:19Speaker 3: Are the Red.
- 9:20Speaker 2: Sox based on one week and that's what this is?
- 9:22Speaker 2: Actually it's five days, four against the Yankees, one against
- 9:25Speaker 2: the Nationals. Are they ready to be declared an absolute contender?
- 9:30Speaker 3: The answer to that, of course, is no.
- 9:32Speaker 2: But would you say that the six teams ahead of them,
- 9:36Speaker 2: including Seattle, the one holding the wildcard spot the third
- 9:39Speaker 2: one currently are that much better and are that loaded themselves. No,
- 9:44Speaker 2: you would not say that either every one of those teams.
- 9:47Speaker 2: Look below these standings, that those are the actual Ale
- 9:51Speaker 2: East standings. But if you look at the wildcard standings
- 9:54Speaker 2: and who is in that? Okay, here we go, right Houston, Minnesota, Toronto,
- 9:59Speaker 2: the A's there.
- 10:01Speaker 3: None of these teams is exactly set in the world
- 10:04Speaker 3: on fire.
- 10:04Speaker 2: In fact, the team holding the third wildcard spot in
- 10:07Speaker 2: the American League right now is a five hundred team.
- 10:10Speaker 2: We're talking about a league that only has six teams
- 10:15Speaker 2: with positive run differentials, and three of them I believe
- 10:17Speaker 2: are plus ten or below. So anything is theoretically possible here.
- 10:23Speaker 2: And that's why I just had some fun with the
- 10:25Speaker 2: Red Sox today, because, hey, I have written twice now
- 10:29Speaker 2: that Craig Breslow the President base Bar Operations, I'm sorry,
- 10:32Speaker 2: chief Baseball Officer.
- 10:33Speaker 3: The Red Sox have a different title.
- 10:35Speaker 2: I've written twice that he is likely to be gone,
- 10:37Speaker 2: and my first paragraph was only in the American League,
- 10:41Speaker 2: the ridiculous American League. Could this transform from a guy
- 10:46Speaker 2: who was effectively a sitting duck into a potential candidate
- 10:49Speaker 2: for Executive of the Year. It's theater of the absurd,
- 10:52Speaker 2: that is the point I was trying to make.
- 10:55Speaker 4: So those teams that you're just talking about, between between
- 10:58Speaker 4: the Mariners and the Red Sox, there's a lot of them. Yeah,
- 11:01Speaker 4: is there a team because when there's so much parody
- 11:04Speaker 4: in a certain league or in a certain race, what
- 11:08Speaker 4: if a team just says we're going out front and
- 11:11Speaker 4: we're going to do it. Is there a team that
- 11:12Speaker 4: could theoretically add to their mediocre or below average roster
- 11:20Speaker 4: and vault themselves out of that brutal, brutal group.
- 11:24Speaker 2: All of those teams could add, and as of now,
- 11:27Speaker 2: my belief or expectation is that all of those teams
- 11:30Speaker 2: want to add. Michaelias, the Oriols president base Operations, came
- 11:34Speaker 2: out a couple of days ago and said we want
- 11:36Speaker 2: to buy.
- 11:36Speaker 3: We intend to go for it. The Oriols have been.
- 11:40Speaker 2: Less than inspiring, to say the least, this season, and
- 11:44Speaker 2: yet that is his point of view, and they're at
- 11:46Speaker 2: the bottom of that group actually, So I would expect
- 11:50Speaker 2: all of those teams, at least for now, to be
- 11:53Speaker 2: in the mentality of we want to upgrade our rosters. Now,
- 11:57Speaker 2: some are different than others. Houston historically has gone for
- 12:01Speaker 2: it right and historically has been successful.
- 12:03Speaker 3: I would expect.
- 12:04Speaker 2: Dana Brown, in the final year of his contract, the
- 12:07Speaker 2: general manager is going to want to be under an
- 12:10Speaker 2: owner who always wants to win, going to be aggressive. Now,
- 12:14Speaker 2: the one team that's really interesting, and we talked about
- 12:16Speaker 2: them a little bit on Fair Territory yesterday, the Minnesota Twins.
- 12:21Speaker 3: For all this talk of Joe.
- 12:22Speaker 2: Ryan and even Ryan Jeffers Buxton to a lesser extent,
- 12:26Speaker 2: this is a team that's played better than expected, a
- 12:29Speaker 2: team that, under a new leadership with Tom Pohlad taken control,
- 12:35Speaker 2: wants to not go backwards again but go forward and
- 12:39Speaker 2: wants to upgrade.
- 12:40Speaker 3: Now.
- 12:41Speaker 2: Buxton got hurt last night, or at least was talked
- 12:44Speaker 2: about being injured last night, and that always is problematic
- 12:48Speaker 2: if that's serious.
- 12:49Speaker 3: But that's a team that I would think.
- 12:52Speaker 2: Might surprise some people, at least all of us who
- 12:54Speaker 2: have looked at them based on what they did last
- 12:57Speaker 2: year at the deadline as a likely seller.
- 13:00Speaker 3: I'm not sure that's true anymore.
- 13:02Speaker 6: Well, now you've you kind of got towards the AL Central,
- 13:05Speaker 6: which I was going to turn it being a little
- 13:06Speaker 6: biased towards that anyways. But first off, are the Twins
- 13:10Speaker 6: just gonna go for it so they can make the
- 13:12Speaker 6: playoffs and then sell off the rest of the team? Again,
- 13:14Speaker 6: is that they're their main goal because that seems to
- 13:16Speaker 6: be their pattern. But I want to talk to about
- 13:18Speaker 6: Cleveland and the White Soxes here, who are playing well
- 13:21Speaker 6: above expected. I think they're playing great, but they just
- 13:24Speaker 6: got all these prospects from that Crochet trade that are
- 13:27Speaker 6: starting to pan out, that are starting to come up.
- 13:29Speaker 6: They're talking about going for it. Where do where are
- 13:32Speaker 6: they going to find these pieces to go for it?
- 13:34Speaker 6: What are they going to give up? And where's this
- 13:35Speaker 6: pitching going to come from? Because Cleveland, no team in
- 13:38Speaker 6: the AL Central is really built to run away with it.
- 13:40Speaker 6: Nobody's nobody's has the roster to kind of win that
- 13:43Speaker 6: hundred games and kind of just take over. So I think,
- 13:46Speaker 6: what kind of moves do you see coming in that division?
- 13:48Speaker 7: Alone?
- 13:50Speaker 2: Agree Jason that none of those teams looks like it's
- 13:53Speaker 2: running away. And from that perspective, if you're the White Sox,
- 13:57Speaker 2: I look at them a little bit differently than I've
- 14:00Speaker 2: looked at some of.
- 14:00Speaker 3: The other surprise teams, the Nationals, the Cardinals.
- 14:04Speaker 2: Those teams, in my opinion, the Nationals and Cardinals, they
- 14:07Speaker 2: don't want to buy.
- 14:08Speaker 3: They want to sell now they may.
- 14:10Speaker 2: End up having to buy because they're in a competitive
- 14:12Speaker 2: position that dictates it.
- 14:14Speaker 3: But that was.
- 14:15Speaker 2: Never their idea coming into the season. Wasn't the White
- 14:18Speaker 2: Sox idea either. But the White Sox are in a
- 14:21Speaker 2: weak division, as you mentioned, and they have in recent
- 14:25Speaker 2: years struggled mightily, to say the least, So they would
- 14:30Speaker 2: like to obviously honor what the current team is doing
- 14:34Speaker 2: and upgrade it if they can. The way to do
- 14:36Speaker 2: that bullpen needs help, but yeah, man, a veteran starter
- 14:41Speaker 2: to add to what they have, which isn't bad, would
- 14:43Speaker 2: really be impactful in my opinion anyway. So I see
- 14:48Speaker 2: them a little bit differently at least right now, than
- 14:51Speaker 2: I see the Nationals and Cardinals, because it seems.
- 14:54Speaker 8: Their hunger is a little bit greater to maybe just
- 14:57Speaker 8: get to the playoffs, which would be an amazing ACCOMPLI
- 15:01Speaker 8: Cleveland is a fascinating team, and I wrote about this.
- 15:06Speaker 3: I don't know it's about it.
- 15:07Speaker 2: Maybe a month six weeks ago, Jason, and what I
- 15:10Speaker 2: wrote was they could turn over their team quite a
- 15:14Speaker 2: bit over the months of June and July simply by
- 15:19Speaker 2: bringing up players from their farm system, and we've seen
- 15:21Speaker 2: it happen now Bazana, Khalil Watson, and Cooper Ingle.
- 15:27Speaker 3: They just added.
- 15:27Speaker 2: They keep bringing these guys up and they're probably just
- 15:30Speaker 2: in some ways Bazan is a fixture I would think
- 15:33Speaker 2: for years to come, but in some ways they're taking
- 15:35Speaker 2: a look and seeing what they have and where they
- 15:37Speaker 2: need to upgrade. The Guardians always seem to need offense.
- 15:41Speaker 2: This year is no different. They obviously need Jose Ramirez
- 15:44Speaker 2: back badly, and on Hell Martinez as well, but that
- 15:49Speaker 2: would be I would expect where they might look to upgrade,
- 15:52Speaker 2: But I don't know that they'll do much because they
- 15:54Speaker 2: are I don't want to say wedded to their internal options,
- 15:58Speaker 2: but they're committed to them away and this is why
- 16:02Speaker 2: they didn't do much last offseason. Now, the other reason
- 16:04Speaker 2: they don't do much in the off season is because
- 16:06Speaker 2: they don't typically spend money. But they have these guys
- 16:10Speaker 2: coming and there are more, so it's gonna be really
- 16:13Speaker 2: interesting to see how this team continues to evolve with
- 16:17Speaker 2: all of the young talent that they are capable of
- 16:20Speaker 2: incorporating ken Is.
- 16:22Speaker 4: There any glaring reason of why the superstars in San
- 16:26Speaker 4: Diego are all struggling for the most part? Is it
- 16:31Speaker 4: is it Craig Stammon. I feel like, how's the manager
- 16:33Speaker 4: gonna make all of them struggle? Is it a they
- 16:37Speaker 4: played too much? They've played too little? Is there something
- 16:39Speaker 4: that you can put your finger on?
- 16:41Speaker 3: I can't, and it isn't all of them.
- 16:44Speaker 2: Xander Bogarts has been pretty good, Tatise has come around.
- 16:48Speaker 2: Even Meryl's been a little bit better lately. I know
- 16:50Speaker 2: Manny is still kind of in a weird place, and
- 16:54Speaker 2: he too, has shown signs at various points of late,
- 16:57Speaker 2: but it's not the consistent Manny Machado we've seen for.
- 17:00Speaker 3: Years on end.
- 17:02Speaker 2: I can't put any one finger on it. And people
- 17:05Speaker 2: might say, well, what's with the hitting coach? And this
- 17:07Speaker 2: is the hitting coach new one, Steven Sousa, and maybe
- 17:11Speaker 2: he's in jeopardy because of all this. That's typically what
- 17:14Speaker 2: teams do, right, But at the same time, these are
- 17:17Speaker 2: players with long track records, not Merril so much, but
- 17:19Speaker 2: he's got something of a track record. And it's just
- 17:22Speaker 2: curious to me that they have not ignited, and I
- 17:26Speaker 2: kind of keep waiting for it to turn. I don't
- 17:28Speaker 2: believe Manny Machado is done by any stretch of the imagination,
- 17:32Speaker 2: and Jackson Merrill certainly is not done.
- 17:35Speaker 3: So we'll see what happens here. That's a really interesting team.
- 17:39Speaker 2: At the deadline for any number of reasons. One because
- 17:42Speaker 2: of the way they've played, which has been disappointing. And
- 17:46Speaker 2: their biggest need, you would think, and really is starting pitching.
- 17:50Speaker 2: Because their position lineup is pretty good, they have some
- 17:53Speaker 2: areas they can go get.
- 17:54Speaker 3: Yes and upgrade.
- 17:56Speaker 2: But the other X factor is aj Preller where he
- 18:00Speaker 2: generally operates at the deadline, which.
- 18:02Speaker 3: Is in a frenzy.
- 18:03Speaker 2: And then there's a third X factor, which is new
- 18:06Speaker 2: ownership and what kind of latitude from a payroll standpoint
- 18:11Speaker 2: does Preller have. Other teams have told me he is
- 18:14Speaker 2: signaling that he will have financial latitude and flexibility, but
- 18:19Speaker 2: we won't know that until we actually see it.
- 18:22Speaker 1: Yeah, I just think back to last year. Of course,
- 18:24Speaker 1: it's like, oh, we didn't think Mason Miller is going
- 18:27Speaker 1: to be dealt up. He's dealt and he's a Padre. Oh,
- 18:29Speaker 1: it's Ramon Lariano, it's Ryan o'haren, it's I mean, they
- 18:32Speaker 1: were even surprised they were dealt. And that's that's what
- 18:35Speaker 1: I love, Ken, just being a baseball fan when they're like,
- 18:38Speaker 1: you know, we don't like parts of our offense. We're
- 18:40Speaker 1: just going to start bringing in position players to replace
- 18:42Speaker 1: our guys. I know you can't replace Machadaw and Merrill
- 18:44Speaker 1: so quickly, but I'm excited to see what the Padres do.
- 18:47Speaker 1: Thanks for the time. We'll catch you later this week.
- 18:50Speaker 1: Thanks guys, Thank you Ken Rosenthal on Fair Territory on Thursday.
- 18:54Speaker 1: If you have questions we didn't do fan questions today,
- 18:56Speaker 1: you can do them live during his show twelve thirty
- 18:58Speaker 1: Eastern time. We'll try and do some fan questions for
- 19:00Speaker 1: the next ten appearance. Also a reminder, actually I haven't
- 19:03Speaker 1: mentioned this until just now, Foul Territory won't be live
- 19:06Speaker 1: on Friday. We'll be observing the July fourth holiday, which
- 19:09Speaker 1: goes down on a weekend. This year with over thirty
- 19:15Speaker 1: five million downloads, Seageek is the number one rated ticketing
- 19:18Speaker 1: app and krats there are many many baseball games on
- 19:23Speaker 1: the inventory to check out all summer long. This is
- 19:26Speaker 1: the season now, it is baseball, baseball season. Not many
- 19:29Speaker 1: other options for you sports wise. I know you can
- 19:31Speaker 1: go anywhere you want to go with Seakeek. There's so
- 19:33Speaker 1: many tickets to choose from. But baseball's center stage now
- 19:36Speaker 1: for the next couple months.
- 19:38Speaker 7: School's out.
- 19:39Speaker 4: I'm going to watch some baseball games, some big league games,
- 19:42Speaker 4: all in my area, and I want to know exactly
- 19:44Speaker 4: what it looks like. And I also want the best deal,
- 19:46Speaker 4: so I'm looking for the green, not the red.
- 19:49Speaker 1: That's right. The green hooks you up with the best
- 19:51Speaker 1: deals on the app. Of course, we have the code
- 19:54Speaker 1: it's Territory ten for ten percent off your next set
- 19:56Speaker 1: of tickets at Sea Geek. That's ten percent off any
- 19:59Speaker 1: mL B tickets with the promo code Territory one zero.
- 20:04Speaker 1: Make sure you click the link in the description of
- 20:06Speaker 1: this episode that'll download the app if you don't have
- 20:09Speaker 1: it already, and you'll have the code automatically added to
- 20:11Speaker 1: your account so that you can use that code later.
- 20:14Speaker 1: Thank you. See Geek. Hey, we're doing trade predictions as
- 20:17Speaker 1: we have. Our guest hosts. This week, Keeps back, so
- 20:21Speaker 1: he's going to follow what KP did in the prior episode, Kip,
- 20:25Speaker 1: you have some trade predictions for us on some destinations
- 20:28Speaker 1: where you think stars could land, and why I do.
- 20:31Speaker 6: And I'm sure you've talked about a bunch of these
- 20:33Speaker 6: guys and probably even maybe have some of them already
- 20:35Speaker 6: for yours too. But let's start with the obvious one.
- 20:38Speaker 6: We think Treik Schooble is going to get traded. I
- 20:41Speaker 6: have the Yank stealing him this time instead of the Dodgers.
- 20:45Speaker 6: Well that's my first one.
- 20:47Speaker 1: They I don't know, starters what they have a lot
- 20:50Speaker 1: of good starters.
- 20:52Speaker 6: So so the Dodgers, I think it's just I think
- 20:54Speaker 6: they're going all in. I think that's their main move.
- 20:57Speaker 6: They have the ability to resign him, to pay him,
- 20:59Speaker 6: to hold on to him after his contract. I think
- 21:02Speaker 6: so maybe that's they're they're what they're leaning towards.
- 21:04Speaker 7: What do you guys gotten that one? First off?
- 21:07Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean you're you're adding a strength to a strength,
- 21:09Speaker 1: which I'm always okay with krats, like you can have
- 21:11Speaker 1: too many of these.
- 21:13Speaker 6: But I mean we just time talking about the Phillies
- 21:15Speaker 6: needing a starter at Cauz of Nola, but they have
- 21:17Speaker 6: three bona fide starters. You can never have too many
- 21:20Speaker 6: good starting pitching in the major leagues.
- 21:23Speaker 3: No, kidnus. I liked you when you were with Cleveland,
- 21:25Speaker 3: but yo, we need some offense. Have you seen the
- 21:27Speaker 3: team in the last five days?
- 21:28Speaker 1: Yo?
- 21:29Speaker 3: Yo, they can't even hit.
- 21:33Speaker 1: Good analysis that was?
- 21:35Speaker 4: That was? That was Tony from New York calling in Okay.
- 21:38Speaker 1: Well, I mean I grew up listening to to talk
- 21:41Speaker 1: radio in New York and they'd be like, yeah, we
- 21:43Speaker 1: want the Schooble guy. We'll take him like and they'll
- 21:46Speaker 1: name like. They'll go on you know, Baseball America and
- 21:48Speaker 1: find like their eighteenth ranked prospect and be like, yeah,
- 21:50Speaker 1: we'll give him Smith Smith for Schoogle Right, Yeah.
- 21:54Speaker 3: That's one.
- 21:55Speaker 1: Here's my next deal. Yeah, straight up, it's fine. He's
- 21:57Speaker 1: supposed to be really good. He's got like six homers
- 22:00Speaker 1: enable so uh, I'm not saying it's it's impossible, and
- 22:04Speaker 1: for me, I would love it still if I'm a
- 22:06Speaker 1: Yankee fan. Add to it, right, what is what does
- 22:08Speaker 1: the playoff rotation look like for you? Schlitler has been
- 22:10Speaker 1: their best pitcher this year. Cole's back should be pitching
- 22:13Speaker 1: a playoff game. Max Freez should come back at some point.
- 22:16Speaker 1: And pitch a playoff game and then Trek scoogle along
- 22:19Speaker 1: with that. Four That sounds great to me. There's others
- 22:21Speaker 1: obviously that can pitch, that have pitched ye fast.
- 22:25Speaker 6: There's other playoff teams that can use him and need
- 22:28Speaker 6: him and would make their rotation look just as good too.
- 22:30Speaker 6: So I mean, listen, I'm not saying I'm right. I'm
- 22:32Speaker 6: just saying that's a that's a guess. That's a guess.
- 22:36Speaker 1: Okay, next up, uh.
- 22:39Speaker 3: Next one.
- 22:40Speaker 6: I got a rolled as chatman to the Cubs. I
- 22:41Speaker 6: think just following them along a little bit closer. They
- 22:45Speaker 6: need some bullpen help, they need some stability back there.
- 22:47Speaker 6: I know there's that something that was talked about their
- 22:50Speaker 6: relationship a little bit between him and whether it was
- 22:53Speaker 6: Ricketts or or Jed I couldn't. I can't remember what
- 22:55Speaker 6: the story was, but I know that they needed they
- 22:58Speaker 6: need a closer or someone in the back end with
- 23:00Speaker 6: Plancia to help out and kind of bring some a
- 23:02Speaker 6: little bit more.
- 23:03Speaker 7: Stability for that one. But they could use the starter too.
- 23:05Speaker 6: Cubs would definitely need a starter as well, But I
- 23:08Speaker 6: don't know if they're gonna be the ones.
- 23:09Speaker 7: Who go after Schooble.
- 23:11Speaker 1: I like this idea, try to find the match up again,
- 23:14Speaker 1: Trek Scooble. Yeah, like Eric with the t but I
- 23:17Speaker 1: like this idea. Kip. I mean, he's done it before
- 23:20Speaker 1: with the Cubs. He was part of the Glabor Torres
- 23:22Speaker 1: for Trapman deal that would I mean, he's he's part
- 23:25Speaker 1: of ultimate Cubs history.
- 23:28Speaker 6: Yeah, I'm aware, but just I know they have the
- 23:30Speaker 6: relationship that I think has been there before. But I
- 23:33Speaker 6: think that that fit and him go well together. I
- 23:38Speaker 6: just see them like it.
- 23:41Speaker 3: I like it.
- 23:41Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean I think Chapman will fit on a
- 23:44Speaker 4: lot of teams that don't have a bona closer yet.
- 23:47Speaker 1: Okay, next up.
- 23:49Speaker 6: My next ones were just kind of like could be interchangeable.
- 23:52Speaker 7: I think.
- 23:53Speaker 6: I just I know the Dodgers will always go out
- 23:55Speaker 6: and go get pitching, so I kind of look at
- 23:56Speaker 6: some teams that we're doing well. But I know, we
- 23:58Speaker 6: just talked about the twins kind of being in the middle.
- 24:00Speaker 6: Joe Ryan just seems like a controllable starter that they
- 24:03Speaker 6: like getting. That seems like right up the alley of
- 24:05Speaker 6: the Dodgers. They like having controllable starters. Obviously, uh Luisa.
- 24:10Speaker 6: Rias to the Mariners. I think they need some contact
- 24:12Speaker 6: and hitting. And then Taylor Ward's kind of that Swiss
- 24:15Speaker 6: Army Knight for the Padres.
- 24:18Speaker 7: I think the.
- 24:20Speaker 1: Yep yep, and and that would mean the Orioles maybe
- 24:23Speaker 1: fall back a little bit more. I mean, not that
- 24:26Speaker 1: they're playing well, they're not.
- 24:27Speaker 6: I wanted to put him. I wanted to get the
- 24:29Speaker 6: Orioles somewhere, but I couldn't land on someone.
- 24:33Speaker 3: Right.
- 24:33Speaker 1: So you think they might be sellers when we get
- 24:35Speaker 1: to the trade deadline.
- 24:37Speaker 6: If they I mean, if they're that, if they fall
- 24:39Speaker 6: that far, if they keep dropping, I know, the third
- 24:41Speaker 6: Wildcard obviously opens up to everyone. I mean, if you
- 24:43Speaker 6: look at the AL the third wildcard teams of five
- 24:45Speaker 6: hundred team we just talked about that, but you fall
- 24:48Speaker 6: that far behind uh Tampa Bay and Yankees, You're yeah,
- 24:54Speaker 6: You're just you're not putting yourself in that much a
- 24:56Speaker 6: good position to have success near the back the end
- 24:58Speaker 6: of the season.
- 25:00Speaker 4: You're digging too of a hole. My favorite one is
- 25:03Speaker 4: the Taylor Award to the Padres. Taylor Ward has not
- 25:07Speaker 4: has not dipped into his power. And this is the
- 25:10Speaker 4: dude that hit some pumps last year out on the
- 25:13Speaker 4: West coast.
- 25:13Speaker 7: Maybe there's something who knows.
- 25:16Speaker 4: He goes back out to Anaheim and he hits a
- 25:18Speaker 4: homer with the Orioles, Like some people play a little
- 25:22Speaker 4: bit more, you know, relaxed on one.
- 25:25Speaker 3: Of the coasts.
- 25:25Speaker 4: Who knows, But that would give them some extra power.
- 25:30Speaker 4: Not a lot of athleticism in the outfield, but look,
- 25:33Speaker 4: the athleticism has gotten them thirtieth in offense for the
- 25:37Speaker 4: entire year so far.
- 25:38Speaker 3: So they got to try to add a bat somehow.
- 25:42Speaker 6: I figured, like I was thinking a ry as to
- 25:44Speaker 6: the Padres. I mean, he was just there and they
- 25:45Speaker 6: got rid of him a little bit though, so but
- 25:47Speaker 6: like he hits a single in front of guys who
- 25:49Speaker 6: aren't hitting it. So I thought, Taylor Ward can get
- 25:52Speaker 6: some pumps in and get that a little bit more
- 25:53Speaker 6: cooking numbers for the Padres offense.
- 25:56Speaker 7: So I kind of flipped those two.
- 25:58Speaker 1: Yeah they need thump, You're right, Yeah they need them.
- 26:01Speaker 1: They need to find themb but even if it does
- 26:03Speaker 1: sacrifice something else, they need more power to be able
- 26:06Speaker 1: to go the distance, you know, get yourself a regular
- 26:09Speaker 1: season spot and then eventually a playoff spot. Arise is
- 26:11Speaker 1: a whole different player this year. Kip have you ever
- 26:14Speaker 1: seen something like this. Right, he's the contact guy, but
- 26:17Speaker 1: his offense numbers are back up. Right, he's had a
- 26:20Speaker 1: little bit more slug he's on base more than he
- 26:22Speaker 1: was last year. Right, Like his offense was declining a
- 26:25Speaker 1: little bit, and then now he's having one of his
- 26:27Speaker 1: better years in terms of getting on base and even
- 26:29Speaker 1: driving the ball here and they're not homers but doubles.
- 26:32Speaker 1: But the revelation is he was one of the worst
- 26:35Speaker 1: defenders and now all of a sudden, he's a great defender.
- 26:39Speaker 7: Put in the work, and you tip the cap to
- 26:40Speaker 7: people who do that.
- 26:42Speaker 6: I think I was talking about it with We mentioned
- 26:44Speaker 6: Michael Brandley earlier, Like, there's not many guys who just
- 26:47Speaker 6: give you that professional.
- 26:49Speaker 7: At bat anymore in this league. It's just not the
- 26:51Speaker 7: way the league's played.
- 26:52Speaker 6: I think you can name a couple Freddie Freeman, Soto
- 26:55Speaker 6: it a lot of times. But ariahs just gives you that,
- 26:58Speaker 6: Like he chokes up with two strikes, he gets jammed.
- 27:00Speaker 6: I just love the way that he makes it tough
- 27:02Speaker 6: on the picture to get him out. And I mean,
- 27:04Speaker 6: look at his average, it shows why. It shows that
- 27:06Speaker 6: their success there. But that's a professional at bat every
- 27:09Speaker 6: time he comes up.
- 27:11Speaker 7: Not much power prof.
- 27:13Speaker 1: Yeah, no, and that's good. He's a locker. I mean,
- 27:15Speaker 1: he's definitely getting dealt on a on a bad Giants
- 27:18Speaker 1: team when his stock is high to what is that
- 27:21Speaker 1: one year deal crats we talked about, So it's a
- 27:23Speaker 1: it's a no brainer here.
- 27:25Speaker 6: There's another way I thought about it would be like
- 27:27Speaker 6: a because I was just looking at the Giants a lot,
- 27:29Speaker 6: just because I know they're kind of starting the trend
- 27:31Speaker 6: of getting rid of guys a little bit earlier than
- 27:32Speaker 6: everybody else. Is like a chapman to the Brewers something
- 27:37Speaker 6: like that.
- 27:38Speaker 1: Just I mean, he was paying for that contract, though.
- 27:42Speaker 7: I did.
- 27:42Speaker 6: Someone with the san Fane will eat a little bit
- 27:45Speaker 6: of it. I guess they'd have to, Yeah, for an
- 27:46Speaker 6: extra prospect.
- 27:48Speaker 7: There you go. There's always ways to work around it.
- 27:50Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, you have to pay more in prospects, which
- 27:52Speaker 1: the Brewers have the probably the best farm system in
- 27:54Speaker 1: baseball right now, so certainly capable. Yeah, Okay, I like it.
- 27:58Speaker 1: Good stuff. If you're watching after the facult ius know
- 28:01Speaker 1: your thoughts on some of Kip's moves and trade deadline predictions.
