- 0:00SPEAKER_02: Moses specifically, that nudge, that burning bush, came after the children of Israel were slaves for like 400 years.
- 0:08SPEAKER_02: So when you think about timing, I don't, I don't, I don't know that I've ever actually waited for, I know I have not waited for 400 years for anything.
- 0:16SPEAKER_02: Right?
- 0:16SPEAKER_02: Like I just have not, thank God.
- 0:19SPEAKER_02: But many times there's a question of God's timing.
- 0:24SPEAKER_02: He it feels like he's late.
- 0:27SPEAKER_02: It feels like this moment is now too late for God to intervene.
- 0:37SPEAKER_02: Welcome back to the Refuse to Settle podcast where we tackle hard topics, hard directions for our life, where we refuse to settle for less than God's best.
- 0:47SPEAKER_02: I'm excited about today's conversation because uh there's lots of words that the world uses for what we're gonna talk about today.
- 0:53SPEAKER_02: So we're gonna talk about the nudge, but some of the ways this is described is maybe as like um intuition, gut feeling, uh, you know, those kinds of things.
- 1:04SPEAKER_02: And so for the sake of just jumping into it, how are we defining the nudge?
- 1:09SPEAKER_00: Well, I'd say the working definition, we did a whole several series on this, and it had a tons of ton of traction.
- 1:15SPEAKER_00: And uh so our working definition was a sudden deep down sense from God that you ought to do something inconvenient in the moment.
- 1:24SPEAKER_00: And, you know, obviously we know our God is one God existing in three persons: God the Father, God the Son, God the Holy Spirit, and the role of the Holy Spirit or the nudger is uh you know comes from scripture, John 16, 13, to guide us or to nudge us into all truth.
- 1:42SPEAKER_00: Uh Jesus would say in Acts 1.8 that we would receive power when the Holy Spirit, the nudger, uh comes upon us, right?
- 1:50SPEAKER_00: And so the the whole idea uh is is God gives us these little nudges, which seem little at the time, but they have huge in implications.
- 2:00SPEAKER_00: And it guides us into truth, it guides us into to to right living, it helps us, it saves us, it redeems us.
- 2:08SPEAKER_00: And uh, you know, people people say, well, like you know, is it really important?
- 2:13SPEAKER_00: Do I really need to be nudged?
- 2:14SPEAKER_00: And and the truth is it there's so many things in scripture that are black and white.
- 2:21SPEAKER_01: Yeah, right?
- 2:22SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 2:22SPEAKER_00: And then there's those things in scripture, man, like that there's some gray area.
- 2:27SPEAKER_00: And and what I always tell people is is the Holy Spirit is the God of our gray area.
- 2:33SPEAKER_00: Yeah, you know, um so good.
- 2:34SPEAKER_00: Yeah, man, like who are you gonna marry?
- 2:36SPEAKER_00: Where are you gonna work?
- 2:37SPEAKER_00: Where do you live?
- 2:38SPEAKER_00: Some of those things that aren't explicitly uh identified in scripture.
- 2:42SPEAKER_00: We got principles, of course, right?
- 2:44SPEAKER_00: Uh and we got principles on right living, but there's so many things that that are our gray area, and it's like, how do we know some of these things?
- 2:52SPEAKER_00: Well, the answer is through the person of the Holy Spirit, through that nudge.
- 2:57SPEAKER_00: Uh, and and the only way, you know, we're gonna we're gonna refuse to settle is if we're we allow that the God of the gray area, the nudger, to really guide us into all truth.
- 3:07SPEAKER_00: And and what's so sad, Tommy, is that we have this, you know, this proclivity to settle for less.
- 3:14SPEAKER_00: Like, you know, we all know God the Father, we all know Jesus, but as Francis Chan says in this book, and I'll put this in the uh the description, uh, this is it's called the forgotten God.
- 3:26SPEAKER_00: And its whole premise is this the this God of the Holy Spirit, this nudger, is is so instrumental for us living the lives we're called to live for refusing to settle.
- 3:38SPEAKER_00: And yet so many people try to live life, even Christians who accepted Jesus and are going to heaven, yea, God, but they they settle for a clear path to a lesser goal and they don't step into the living that God's called them to because they don't understand the importance of responding and listening to and carrying out those uh nudges that God so eloquently gives us.
- 4:01SPEAKER_00: And I guess one one example that comes to my mind was um this girl that goes to our church named April, and uh she's written in and shared this publicly, and so I'm allowed to share it here.
- 4:11SPEAKER_00: Um, but it was uh one time in the weight room.
- 4:14SPEAKER_02: I was at the gym, and of course, of course that's where you were.
- 4:18SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and it was back, dude.
- 4:19SPEAKER_00: It was back in 2020, so you remember that.
- 4:20SPEAKER_00: It was that was a nightmare for for so many people.
- 4:23SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 4:23SPEAKER_00: Um, it was December 18th, uh, 2020, and so that this this girl named April, she had three kids.
- 4:30SPEAKER_00: Her husband of eight years had just recently died.
- 4:32SPEAKER_00: She had lupus, and there she was at the gym, and she saw me.
- 4:36SPEAKER_00: And she had gone to uh she had didn't go to our church at that time, she had gone to a previous church where I was at.
- 4:43SPEAKER_00: And she's like, Oh, I think that's that's Pastor John.
- 4:46SPEAKER_00: And so she had this nudge, you know, she you know, she was getting ready to leave, and she's like, you know what?
- 4:50SPEAKER_00: Felt the Holy Spirit just nudge her, yeah, her words, to come and to talk to me.
- 4:55SPEAKER_00: And so she comes and she, you know, says hi, and she's asks, you know, are you this person?
- 4:58SPEAKER_00: Blah, blah.
- 4:59SPEAKER_00: Well, anyways, I ended up through, she wasn't going to church at the time, and she was obviously struggling with all the stuff going on in her life, losing her husband and the medical condition.
- 5:07SPEAKER_00: And so I said, Come to church.
- 5:08SPEAKER_00: Well, based on that nudge, she talks to me.
- 5:11SPEAKER_00: I invite her to church, she comes to church.
- 5:13SPEAKER_00: She ends up um just breaking down at church that day, and we got her in a group that night.
- 5:19SPEAKER_00: She goes to a group that night, and she confesses at that group that night that she has a gun and was suicidal and was talking about killing herself, taking her own life that very night.
- 5:28SPEAKER_00: And so we would have someone from the church go over and get the gun.
- 5:31SPEAKER_00: And long story short, fast forward, uh, she's doing great today.
- 5:35SPEAKER_00: She's she's remarried, she's in biblical community, she's thriving, you know.
- 5:39SPEAKER_00: And it and you traces back to one simple little Holy Spirit-induced nudge that literally God used to save her life, man.
- 5:49SPEAKER_00: So, you know, it's and not that all nudges leave to something life uh life saving, but I believe every life every nudge leads to something life-changing.
- 5:59SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 5:59SPEAKER_00: And so that's the importance of what we're talking about.
- 6:02SPEAKER_02: So good, so good.
- 6:03SPEAKER_02: Uh the the other side of this, and again, like you said, there's so many examples of this in scripture.
- 6:09SPEAKER_02: Once you realize it's the nudger that's doing the work, even in the life and ministry of Jesus, he needed those nudges and so so many examples.
- 6:18SPEAKER_02: But here's a question that some people um might even be a little bit harder to identify, right?
- 6:24SPEAKER_02: So it's it's go, oh, who's asking you to do something uncomfortable?
- 6:29SPEAKER_02: That's the nudging of the Holy Spirit.
- 6:31SPEAKER_02: You wouldn't normally go talk to that person who you don't know or go give something, whether it's even a cup of cold water.
- 6:37SPEAKER_02: Yep.
- 6:37SPEAKER_02: But what about that nudge of when you need to grow in an area?
- 6:42SPEAKER_02: So now it's an is how does that nudge get internalized, or is there a place for that internal nudge that nobody else even knows about?
- 6:50SPEAKER_00: Yeah, no, that's a great question.
- 6:51SPEAKER_00: Because I I, you know, I I think it's one thing when God nudges us to do something else, but I think a lot of nudges, um, I I can tell you from my life, most of my nudges are nudges for me personally to grow.
- 7:06SPEAKER_00: Uh, you know, it it says in in John 16.8 that the this the Holy Spirit will come and convict the world of sin and righteousness and judgment, right?
- 7:17SPEAKER_00: And so there is this sense, and that Greek word convict, it means to to bring to light.
- 7:22SPEAKER_00: And I know personally, man, there has been so many things in my life, so many times um in my life, including last night.
- 7:29SPEAKER_00: No kidding, Tommy.
- 7:30SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I'm at the Mac store.
- 7:32SPEAKER_00: Um, and it's embarrassing to tell, but it's a it's a true story.
- 7:36SPEAKER_00: I was I was there and I was waiting.
- 7:37SPEAKER_00: She said it's gonna be 15 minutes to exchange my phone.
- 7:40SPEAKER_00: You know, I'm like 15 minutes, okay, I can do this.
- 7:42SPEAKER_00: I wait 30 minutes and I finally go up to the lady and she's oh yeah, no, um, sorry, we thought you left.
- 7:47SPEAKER_00: And I'm like, Well, I was waiting exactly where you told me to wait, you know?
- 7:50SPEAKER_00: And she's like, Oh, well, yeah, but the girl who told you to wait there, she left and we didn't know who you were.
- 7:55SPEAKER_00: I'm like, as if it was my fault.
- 7:56SPEAKER_00: So I'm starting to get kind of amped up, right?
- 7:58SPEAKER_00: And all of a sudden I just feel the Holy Spirit chill.
- 8:02SPEAKER_00: It's not a big deal, John, because you know, I'm I'm impatient.
- 8:04SPEAKER_00: You know what I'm saying?
- 8:05SPEAKER_00: And um, and sure enough, this girl we didn't talk, and she's like, What do you do?
- 8:09SPEAKER_00: I said, Oh, I'm a pastor.
- 8:10SPEAKER_00: She's like, What church?
- 8:11SPEAKER_00: I said, The gathering.
- 8:12SPEAKER_00: She's like, Oh, I've been to your church.
- 8:14SPEAKER_00: In fact, my friend uh got baptized, and she pulls up the picture of the baptism at our church and all this stuff.
- 8:21SPEAKER_00: And I'm thinking myself, had I been in the flesh, had I not listened to that nudge, dude, I would have embarrassed myself.
- 8:28SPEAKER_00: And more importantly, I would embarrass the God that I represent.
- 8:31SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 8:32SPEAKER_02: I I would say for me, um, where there's an area that I need to grow in, it's probably a blind spot, and I really am not uh susceptible or open to the counsel or teaching or somebody I'd probably reject it if you came up and told me.
- 8:49SPEAKER_02: But when the nudge of the Holy Spirit comes in and he's like, hey son, I need to talk to you about this, right?
- 8:55SPEAKER_02: You're like, how are you gonna argue with him?
- 8:58SPEAKER_02: So, like those internal nudges that nobody else even sees, it's like he's wooing me to a better way, a better life, a better uh, you know, breakthrough, you know, whatever word you would want to use there.
- 9:09SPEAKER_02: But almost all of my spiritual growth, well, I definitely believe in pastors because I are one, right?
- 9:16SPEAKER_02: Like I believe in that gift.
- 9:18SPEAKER_02: I believe in coaches and teachers and education.
- 9:22SPEAKER_02: Nothing develops me better, uh efficiently, um uh thoroughly than that nudge of the Holy Spirit of like, hey, you're walking in the flesh here.
- 9:34SPEAKER_02: Hey, you're you I'm gonna change your heart, I'm gonna change your attitude, I'm gonna change your approach.
- 9:38SPEAKER_02: So it's one of those things where uh eventually people see the difference, right?
- 9:43SPEAKER_02: You know, where he's nudged me, but it's not like, oh, go and do, right?
- 9:47SPEAKER_02: It's look and change.
- 9:48SPEAKER_00: Oh, yeah.
- 9:48SPEAKER_00: Like blind spots, man.
- 9:50SPEAKER_00: Like, you know, uh Thomas Merton, I love this quote.
- 9:52SPEAKER_00: He said, We're not very good at recognizing illusions, least of all the ones we cherish about ourselves.
- 9:58SPEAKER_00: You know what I'm saying?
- 9:59SPEAKER_00: Like there's things that we haven't.
- 10:00SPEAKER_00: I know, it's convicted, right?
- 10:01SPEAKER_00: There's things that we can't see apart from the Holy Spirit.
- 10:04SPEAKER_00: And of course, we have we have people in our life that can, you know, help hold us accountable, but there's things that are that only God knows about us and that only he can speak to us.
- 10:12SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 10:13SPEAKER_00: And uh, and you know, and and we're not, here's the bottom line.
- 10:16SPEAKER_00: This is a refuse to settle podcast.
- 10:18SPEAKER_00: We're not gonna be the people we're called to be if we don't allow that nudger to convict us of those things.
- 10:23SPEAKER_00: And again, he's not trying to beat us up with the baseball bat, he's trying to help us grow.
- 10:27SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 10:27SPEAKER_00: You know, we are designed, and I love this.
- 10:29SPEAKER_00: Uh, Dr.
- 10:30SPEAKER_00: Tim Elmore from his book Habitudes uses this comparison.
- 10:33SPEAKER_00: He says, We're not we we are designed to be thermostats, not thermometers.
- 10:39SPEAKER_00: Oh, this is so good.
- 10:40SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
- 10:40SPEAKER_00: You know, thermos thermometers reflect the climate, but thermostats set the climate, right?
- 10:47SPEAKER_00: And and we're supposed to be like people who go into a room and and literally by the by the power of the the the risen God living in us and the person of the Holy Spirit nudging us and directing us and guiding us into all the truth, like we're supposed to make people's lives uh better.
- 11:03SPEAKER_00: People are supposed to be different having interacted with us, right?
- 11:06SPEAKER_00: We are supposed to literally set the climate, be these thermostats.
- 11:10SPEAKER_00: And what's interesting about a thermostat, and I just had this happen last week, no joke.
- 11:15SPEAKER_00: I've got one of those smart thermostats.
- 11:16SPEAKER_02: Yep, same.
- 11:17SPEAKER_00: And sure enough, I it was reading the wrong temperature.
- 11:20SPEAKER_00: I'm like, what is going on?
- 11:21SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 11:22SPEAKER_00: And so it and I, you know, had to chat GPT, right?
- 11:25SPEAKER_00: I'm like, it was it was it had to be recalibrated.
- 11:28SPEAKER_00: So I had to shut it down and recalibrate it, boop, came, came right back up.
- 11:32SPEAKER_00: The thermostat was good to go.
- 11:34SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 11:34SPEAKER_00: In the same way.
- 11:35SPEAKER_00: That's what the Holy Spirit does to us.
- 11:37SPEAKER_00: It recalibrates us and leads us right back where we need to be.
- 11:42SPEAKER_00: And and again, Tommy, full disclosure, for me, is I need that in my life.
- 11:47SPEAKER_00: And in fact, um this past year I went through a thing where I had um unknowingly given uh access to the wrong voices, right?
- 11:58SPEAKER_00: And of course, we all know it's so important the circle you keep, right?
- 12:02SPEAKER_00: Jesus kept a very tight circle for that very same reason.
- 12:05SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 12:06SPEAKER_00: Not everyone had access.
- 12:07SPEAKER_00: He had the 12, and of the 12, he really had the three that had really close access to him.
- 12:12SPEAKER_00: Well, I I unknowingly had made a mistake of letting some people have access to my life, um, not bad people, probably well-intentioned people, but it was the wrong people for for the season I was walking through.
- 12:26SPEAKER_00: And uh, you know, I was what what I was ended up doing is I was letting the devil live rent-free in my mind.
- 12:32SPEAKER_00: Yeah, right.
- 12:32SPEAKER_00: By by having uh by allowing access to to people and to words from those people that I really didn't need at that time, didn't serve me, which is why God tells us to guard our heart, right?
- 12:44SPEAKER_00: Above all else.
- 12:46SPEAKER_00: And so the the Holy Spirit comes in, nudges me.
- 12:49SPEAKER_00: And this nudge was like a two by four upside to head.
- 12:51SPEAKER_00: You know what I'm saying?
- 12:52SPEAKER_01: It wasn't like a little more of a shove.
- 12:53SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
- 12:54SPEAKER_00: It was more like, hey, shot across your bow.
- 12:56SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 12:57SPEAKER_00: You need to change the voices.
- 12:59SPEAKER_00: And I'm gonna tell you what that did for my life and my family, and for even for our church, man, it was it was just so instrumental.
- 13:05SPEAKER_00: And so I can't tell people enough how important it is, man, to listen to the voice of the Holy Spirit.
- 13:12SPEAKER_00: Listen to that nudge because it has uh eternal implications.
- 13:16SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah.
- 13:16SPEAKER_02: So good and imperative, right?
- 13:18SPEAKER_02: And so here's here's where I want to take this next question because uh of everybody that I uh work with or encounter, this is where they struggle the most, right?
- 13:29SPEAKER_02: They're saying, okay, hey, I hear you, John.
- 13:31SPEAKER_02: I I hear what you're saying, uh, and they believe it, but then they're like, How do I know that it's the Holy Spirit?
- 13:37SPEAKER_02: How do I know how do I tell the difference between the Holy Spirit and the devil or some wrong?
- 13:42SPEAKER_02: And there's so many voices, and oftentimes it feels like the loudest voice is the leader, you know, and um uh you know, we can get into those scriptures as well.
- 13:51SPEAKER_02: But what what's some steps or some practicalities of how do you better recognize that it is the voice of the Holy Spirit that's nudging you?
- 14:00SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah, and that that's that's a great question.
- 14:03SPEAKER_00: I think it's the right question because you know sometimes it it for all of us, it's not, I mean, I don't care who whether you're a new Christian or you've been a Christian for your whole life, it it is it is tough to to to do that, especially in the world we live in, right?
- 14:16SPEAKER_00: Yeah um we live in a world that's so incredibly distracted.
- 14:20SPEAKER_00: And so I think one of the clear and obvious things is is decrease the noise, right?
- 14:25SPEAKER_00: I mean, you know, God is not going to compete for the space that is meant for him, right?
- 14:32SPEAKER_00: And so it is our job, you know, he talks in the Bible how God speaks in a still, small voice, right?
- 14:37SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 14:38SPEAKER_00: And he's not he loves us, but he's not going to change his voice just because we choose to be distracted, right?
- 14:45SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and so it's our job to do what Jesus did, to get alone with God, to spend time we talked about it in a previous podcast, to get away from people and just to you know to spend time with God.
- 14:58SPEAKER_00: In fact, I would say this to our leaders out there um it's it's imperative.
- 15:03SPEAKER_00: Great leaders do have two things, two things in common.
- 15:06SPEAKER_00: They they're great with people, right?
- 15:08SPEAKER_00: Yeah, uh, but they're they also get away from people.
- 15:12SPEAKER_00: And it sounds like it's counterintuitive.
- 15:14SPEAKER_00: It sounds like, well, wait a second, if you're great with people, you all you always want to be with people.
- 15:18SPEAKER_00: And Jesus modeled that to be great with people, you often need to get away from people so that you can spend time with the Holy Spirit.
- 15:26SPEAKER_00: He can speak to you, he can stir you, and he and you'll hear the very things that he wants to to uh to to share.
- 15:32SPEAKER_00: So I would say the answer it would be to decrease the noise.
- 15:36SPEAKER_00: And I think we also uh learn to better hear the voice of God by recognizing the scent, what I would call this the scent uh of a nudge.
- 15:45SPEAKER_00: What do I mean?
- 15:46SPEAKER_00: Um well John 10, Jesus the good shepherd, uh, and we he's the good shepherd, and we are the sheep, and it says the sheep recognize his voice, they recognize his nudge, they recognize the scent of that nudge.
- 16:00SPEAKER_00: Check this out, Tommy.
- 16:01SPEAKER_00: This is crazy.
- 16:02SPEAKER_00: A sheep's brain is one-tenth the size of human's, and yet the olfactory bulb, that is, the the the part responsible for smell, is two to three times the size of human brains.
- 16:14SPEAKER_02: That's hilarious.
- 16:15SPEAKER_02: Isn't that crazy?
- 16:16SPEAKER_00: It's like God's trying to say, listen, it's important that you recognize my voice.
- 16:20SPEAKER_00: It's a it's a it's important that you recognize the scent of this nudge, because how can we follow the sh good shepherd if we can't recognize his voice?
- 16:29SPEAKER_00: And so um, and and and here's the thing: God speaks in crazy ways.
- 16:34SPEAKER_00: I mean, he nudged people in crazy, uh, you know, Acts 10.
- 16:37SPEAKER_00: Peter, he was nudged by a food dream um in Exodus 3.
- 16:42SPEAKER_00: Moses, he's nudged by a burning bush, right?
- 16:45SPEAKER_02: That didn't burn.
- 16:46SPEAKER_00: That didn't burn.
- 16:47SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it wasn't consumed, right?
- 16:48SPEAKER_00: Uh or Numbers 22.
- 16:50SPEAKER_00: Balaam, he was nudged through a stubborn donkey.
- 16:52SPEAKER_00: Like God can nudge us in whatever way he wants.
- 16:55SPEAKER_00: So it's important we don't put the Holy Spirit in a box.
- 16:58SPEAKER_00: Like God can be God and reveal himself to us in just numerous ways.
- 17:03SPEAKER_00: It's our job to be quiet and to recognize the scent of that nudge because God is speaking.
- 17:10SPEAKER_02: What's so powerful is, and we don't always make this connection, right?
- 17:14SPEAKER_02: In the Old Testament, there was incense, the incense of God's presence that was in the Holy of Holies, right?
- 17:20SPEAKER_02: And so there still is that aroma of his presence.
- 17:24SPEAKER_02: But uh something we don't necessarily talk about in modern day church, modern day Christianity is just the practice of silence and solitude.
- 17:33SPEAKER_02: You know, just sitting there.
- 17:34SPEAKER_02: And it and it's uh a discipline that that maybe we need to preach a little bit more on or something because we're so we're cramming every minute of every day with noise.
- 17:45SPEAKER_02: I read a statistic not that long ago about how much music uh people are consuming uh uh on a monthly basis.
- 17:54SPEAKER_02: And and the the statistics are astronomical.
- 17:57SPEAKER_02: Now I think probably people are listening to music in their sleep based off the numbers that are coming back.
- 18:01SPEAKER_02: And it's like we're we're so afraid of the silence that we just fill it with these noise, and so we go, oh, we don't don't fall for that scheme of the enemy of like, but learning his voice in that silence and solitude is so such a key to feeling his nudge and sensing his nudge.
- 18:20SPEAKER_02: And what do we here's the dangerous part.
- 18:22SPEAKER_02: What am I missing out on when I miss that nudge?
- 18:26SPEAKER_02: You know, we're talking about refusing to settle for anything less than the best and all that God has for us when we don't have his nudge.
- 18:34SPEAKER_02: Yeah, you know, he's he's nudging us to good things, he's nudging us to breakthrough, he's nudging us to transformation.
- 18:40SPEAKER_02: And are we are we missing out on that?
- 18:42SPEAKER_02: Would I be further along in my in my spiritual journey, right?
- 18:46SPEAKER_02: So let me ask you this question about the nudge, especially since you brought up some really big biblical ones, you know, with Moses, with uh, by the way, Moses specifically, that nudge, that burning bush, yeah, came after the children of Israel were slaves for like 400 years.
- 19:04SPEAKER_02: So when you think about timing, I don't I don't I don't know that I've ever actually waited for, I know I have not waited for 400 years for anything, right?
- 19:13SPEAKER_02: Like I just have not, thank God.
- 19:15SPEAKER_02: But many times there's a question of God's timing.
- 19:21SPEAKER_02: He it feels like he's late.
- 19:23SPEAKER_02: It feels like this moment is now too late for God to intervene.
- 19:27SPEAKER_02: So is there is there a specific timing to the nudges of the Holy Spirit?
- 19:31SPEAKER_02: What's your thoughts or takes on that?
- 19:33SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah, no, I think I think God is a you know, he's he's an on-time God, right?
- 19:37SPEAKER_00: Like we hear that, uh, although we always think he's late, right?
- 19:41SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 19:41SPEAKER_00: And it seems like he's late, but there is a chronic chronology to to God's nudges.
- 19:46SPEAKER_00: Um I think of Galatians 5, 25, where it talks about uh it says, let us keep in step with the spirit, right?
- 19:54SPEAKER_00: There's like this this this this cadence that we gotta move with and be in sync with.
- 20:00SPEAKER_00: Um and and and the challenging thing for us, man, if we're honest, especially men, yeah, is the spirit doesn't sprint, right?
- 20:08SPEAKER_00: It's more of a a step.
- 20:10SPEAKER_00: And and and we gotta stay in in step with uh his step.
- 20:14SPEAKER_00: And I think that's I don't know for you, but if for for me, that's hard uh because the default is to get ahead of God.
- 20:21SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 20:21SPEAKER_00: Typically we don't lag behind God, uh, we often get ahead of God.
- 20:25SPEAKER_00: Um but I but honestly, man, I think God gets blamed for a lot of nudges that just weren't simply obeyed.
- 20:34SPEAKER_00: Because I think while there is a chronology to to to being in step with God, and I think that there's a ton of merit there.
- 20:41SPEAKER_00: I do think our our biggest issue isn't always not hearing, um, it's not obeying.
- 20:47SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 20:47SPEAKER_00: You know, again, uh Francis Chan, one of my favorite quotes is our our knowledge of scripture far exceeds our willingness to obey.
- 20:54SPEAKER_01: Sure.
- 20:54SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 20:55SPEAKER_00: And so, like, we know I got oh, I got a verse for you, Tommy.
- 20:57SPEAKER_00: You know, don't you worry, I I can quote scripture all day long.
- 21:01SPEAKER_00: Yeah, but will you obey it, right?
- 21:03SPEAKER_00: And so, yes, timing is is crucial, and yes, there are things that that are that we need to hear in step and in time, but I think the a question I would have for for our our our viewers um is are you interruptible?
- 21:18SPEAKER_00: Right?
- 21:19SPEAKER_00: So good.
- 21:19SPEAKER_00: When God interrupts us with a nudge, uh, you know, will we obey it?
- 21:23SPEAKER_00: Or do are or are we so like you were just talking about earlier, are are we so busy, so consumed with our life, that we we we just simply don't either we don't hear it or we hear it and don't obey, right?
- 21:38SPEAKER_00: I think that's more dangerous, yeah.
- 21:40SPEAKER_00: And I I could give you uh an example of a guy in our church, man, who by by the God's grace he became interruptible and and it had huge implications in his life.
- 21:49SPEAKER_00: Um guy named Jim uh was asked several years ago to go on a side-by-side trip.
- 21:55SPEAKER_00: There's a sat four people, and there he would, he'd have been the fourth person.
- 21:59SPEAKER_00: And for some reason, Tommy, he had a check in his spirit.
- 22:02SPEAKER_00: And he and he was really looking forward to this this side-by-side day.
- 22:05SPEAKER_00: You know, they're going out all day, and and so he's like, ah no, I just one out.
- 22:09SPEAKER_00: And they're like, Really?
- 22:10SPEAKER_00: Uh you know, okay.
- 22:11SPEAKER_00: And it seemed, and he didn't even have a good reason.
- 22:13SPEAKER_00: He told me, it's like, I didn't have a good reason, I just I had a check in my spirit.
- 22:17SPEAKER_00: Well, they they go, the other three go on the trip, and they were up on a mountain, they were in reverse, you know, making a turn, and the person driving actually reversed too far and went off the cliff, and all three of them lost their life.
- 22:29SPEAKER_00: He would have been there had he not allowed himself to be interruptible by a nudge that saved his life.
- 22:36SPEAKER_00: And so I just wonder, you know, how many, how many lives would be saved, how many marriages would be saved, how many mental health issues could be rectified, how many people would like like like the hat says, would refuse to settle if they became interruptible and allowed the voice of the Holy Spirit to rule over their life and to speak timely, um, timely words that that have huge implications in their life.
- 23:02SPEAKER_00: And so I guess as we kind of wrap it up, man, I I just I just hope that every viewer that's watching um this this day, this week, this month, this year, you begin to uh to to to set in in your life patterns of being interruptible and allowing this God who loves us so much, it's not it's not for anything other than our good and our future and our families and the betterment of ourselves that we listen to this voice called the Holy Spirit and we allow those life-changing nudges to transform us.
- 23:37SPEAKER_02: Yeah, so good, so good.
- 23:39SPEAKER_02: Once again, in the description is Francis Chan's The Forgotten God.
- 23:43SPEAKER_02: It's we get nothing out of that.
- 23:44SPEAKER_02: It's not sponsoring this, it's just a tool that we wanted, a resource we wanted to make sure we gave you.
- 23:49SPEAKER_02: But uh thanks for being with us today.
- 23:52SPEAKER_02: Continue, hit the subscribe button and the like button, that sort of thing, because we want to continue this journey of refusing to settle.
- 23:59SPEAKER_02: And my challenge to you is where is the Holy Spirit nudging you?
- 24:03SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
