Transcript
- 0:18Hello, and welcome to Gatesleepers, the pop culture game show that shines a
- 0:22spotlight onto everyone's favorite fandoms. I'm your games master and lawyer who will gladly
- 0:28commit murder for land rights, Matt Watson. And that's a big pumpkin.
- 0:33But of course we couldn't play these games without our team captains, a pair
- 0:37of amateur sleuths, which just means I don't have to pay them first.
- 0:42It's up to her. It's Audra Stephens. That near rhyme, near rhyme.
- 0:47Maybe I'll give it to you. Okay, it's closer now, thank
- 0:50you, thank you. And he's a solid, sturdy, hardy boy.
- 0:54It's Jason Lynn. I don't like the context of that dependable yes, yeah,
- 1:02absolutely. And then also, as someone who's English is my second language,
- 1:04that didn't rhyme at all. Matt, that was bad. I know
- 1:10she's your wife and she has to me be a nice to you, but
- 1:11that was bad. That's also true. Okay, Hello, captains, are
- 1:18you ready for a series of games about a teenage detective who has been a
- 1:22pot of pop culture for nearly a century? Jesus Christ? Really, yeah,
- 1:27no, no, you're not ready. Jackson I know nothing about Nancy
- 1:30Drew. Oh fantastic, shure not. I never try to research a thing
- 1:33because I think it's cheating. I try to research Nancy Drew for like four
- 1:37hours, and I got nothing. I know who Nancy Drew is. She
- 1:42is not kind of a character. She just solves mysteries. Yeah. The
- 1:45thing I was like is that she has a platform for mystery solving. Yeah,
- 1:49that that's what I gathered from this. I will say I did learn
- 1:53she's not Juny B. Jones, and I thought that there's that's good.
- 1:57We're starting off on it, okay foot Yeah, so I'm just gonna stop
- 2:02talking to you, Jason Oldra. This is this is your fandom, right,
- 2:07this is your thing? Yeah, I well my thing. I have
- 2:09not played every game. I have read a few of the books. Growing
- 2:14up, I was one of those girls. I was a Nancy Drew nice
- 2:16girl, and I started playing them pretty early, like just even watching older
- 2:24friends like from church play them until I was of an age where I felt
- 2:29competent. Oh so this is the thing you can do. Oh you're allowed.
- 2:32Yeah, this wasn't banned in childhood for you. It was not.
- 2:37There is one where they do a seance, and I refuse to tell my
- 2:42parents about that section of the game because they would never let me touch Nancy
- 2:46Drew again. Even though the seance was fake, they would never let me
- 2:52touch it again. Yeah, just like locking the door blanket over the screen.
- 2:58Yeah, yeah, I'm playing ninety Thurio Okay. But ultimately, this
- 3:06is one of the media properties I was allowed to play in my youth.
- 3:09And that's so great. That is great. And have you played any of
- 3:15the games recently? I have, It's been a while since I had played
- 3:19anything. So I got the most recent one, Midnight in Salem, which
- 3:24Matt commented when he was doing research that on the subreddits, the like ACRONYMO
- 3:30not just the subredits, everywhere everywhere am I d And after me playing it,
- 3:35he was like, is that because it's mid I was like, I
- 3:39think it's for midnight but appropriate. No. I did like the fall vibes.
- 3:45I didn't hate the like three D element of it as much as I
- 3:49think the rest of the internet at the time did. But I really enjoyed
- 3:53it. But you're glad to be leaping back into a phantom yam And I've
- 3:57watched a few of the games, rewatched a few of the game that I
- 4:00did play in my youth. Nice in excitement. Nice. What you're saying
- 4:04is your team will win. I'm not gonna say that. Okay, come
- 4:09on, I'm the confidence of Nancy. I'm fully confident. I'm not rude.
- 4:18Okay. Well, to play these games about Nancy Drew, you'll each
- 4:23need to pair up with your closest friends, your best George, sorry best
- 4:28or George. So Jason, who is your teammates today? She's an actor,
- 4:32a podcaster, host of It's Lucked, and a returning player. It's
- 4:36Carolina. Hello, Caroline, welcome by, Thank you for having me back.
- 4:42In great job pronouncing my last name, Jason. No, you you
- 4:49said Isla and I was like, yes, that's the coaching that that was
- 4:56the coaching that happened. I love that. Amazing. Hello, thank you
- 5:00for having me. I'm so excited to be back. Thank you for being
- 5:01here. Were so excited to have you back. I mean, look,
- 5:04you host a Nancy Drew podcast, so it would be kind of crazy if
- 5:09I asked, are you a Nancy Drew fan? So instead I'll ask how
- 5:12long have you been a Nancy Drew fan? Oh, that's a great question.
- 5:16Well, I played the first game when I was like ten, oh
- 5:20wow or nine? Yeah, and I had a similar experience to Odro,
- 5:25where I like, there were certain things I wasn't allowed to play for very
- 5:29similar reasons, I'm sure. And so because of that, Nancy Drew was
- 5:33okay, because you know, it's Nancy Drew and it's educational, you know
- 5:38all that stuff. So yeah, but yeah, so since I was ten
- 5:41and I'm twenty four, so fourteen years day, ie, that's the that's
- 5:47a good length of fandom, quite a lot of knowledge. Played a little
- 5:50games, it's true. Yeah. Yeah, and I read the books too
- 5:55growing up. I couldn't tell you like which ones I read, you know
- 5:58what I've they're all like serialized, so many of them, you know,
- 6:03I know. Oh my god, yeah, so hones. I'm sure it
- 6:06won't come up later. Oh no, Okay, you'll make a great team.
- 6:13You'll help Jason, I'm sure, I mean you'll you'll have to.
- 6:17Yeah. And Audre who is joining you today. She is a writer,
- 6:23a podcaster, also the host of It's Locked and a brand new player.
- 6:27It's Emily Hunt. Hello, welcome to the podcast. Oh hi, thank
- 6:30you so much for having me I'm stoked. Good to hear. Thank you,
- 6:36thank you for joining us first time on the podcast. I hope we're
- 6:40not going to be too weird. Oh maybe maybe we already have been.
- 6:45Again. Also the co host of It's Locked, the Fantastic Nancy Drew Fan
- 6:48Podcast, so I'll ask the same question, how long have you been a
- 6:51fan of Nancy Drew? Emily, I'm just realizing that it's going on twenty
- 6:57years. Oh, I mean to say it out loud, because I still
- 7:00feel like I'm twenty years. But yeah, like Carolina got into them when
- 7:06I was nine or ten, and I'm gonna be thirty in a few months,
- 7:11so nice. Yeah, yeah, hell, I've just recently turned thirty
- 7:18ten months ago at this point. But it's fine, it's all right,
- 7:23it's great, Okay, it's honestly, it's fantastic. It's better than Honestly,
- 7:26these people in their twenties, they don't they don't know. I don't
- 7:30know, I don't know. I feel yeah, well, that's great.
- 7:33He hasn't right here a long time fan, like, well, we'll say
- 7:41two decades. That sounds like we're reducing the number, right, instead of
- 7:44saying twenty years. Two decades of being a fan. Heck yeah, heck
- 7:47yes, awesome. I think you and Oldra will make a good team.
- 7:51I think we will too. Lovely stuff. Okay, teams, you've stumbled
- 7:58into your father's study and found to the files to yet another mystery. How
- 8:01does this keep happening? But before we get to the slew thing, I'd
- 8:05like each pair to come up with a Nancy Drew themed team name. Please,
- 8:09let's start with Jason and Caroline. Any ideas well, Caroline, As
- 8:16you know, I'm just brimming with ideas here. I was gonna ask Jason,
- 8:22what are you? What's what's your idea? I mean doing bad names?
- 8:26But I couldn't think of any except for one because I just realized that
- 8:31the hardy boys are part of this universe. I did, Yeah, I
- 8:35didn't know. So the soft boys or the people either way, the soft
- 8:41boy, I'm good with the How about the softy boys? All the softy
- 8:48is good? That is a good, good name. I'm good with this.
- 8:52I'm good to be a boy just for the length of this podcast.
- 8:58Yeah, I didn't love saying well, Matt loves saying and I love saying.
- 9:03It's just us girls here, and it feels good. Yeah, so
- 9:07I'm all for that. Yeah. Yeah, be flexible with gender, that's
- 9:09the lesson. Yeah, it's true. Yeah, so the softy boys,
- 9:13I mean, is there anything softy boys? And I stronger than that?
- 9:16Carolina or I really was thinking like, yeah, I'm happy with that.
- 9:22I was gonna say amateur detectives, perhaps because Jason's an amateur. I don't
- 9:31know softy. I know, I'm also a softy boy, you know,
- 9:37I think I think we can be softy boys with that. Just please don't
- 9:41call me amateur softy boy because that starts a double level. Yeah. Yeah,
- 9:48images that you go a bit too much. So we have the softy
- 9:52boys, but let's find out who they'll be facing, Uldra Emily. Oh
- 9:56couple ideas, okay, throw them at me. I first off went on
- 10:01this train of rhyme. So Nancy drew. It became like Nancy took you
- 10:09one of us. If one of us draws, I don't know, Nancy
- 10:13Nancy drews. If one of us can fly, it's Nancy flew if if
- 10:24to be able to fly. And then I just settled on team Frank because
- 10:30I am team Frank. Over ned. We'll have to have a long discussion
- 10:33about that at a later point in time, if you haven't stirred the pot
- 10:41because I also agree for what I think are very nuanced reasons. Okay,
- 10:48but yes, can we be? Can we be Team Frank against the Softy
- 10:54Boys like a double dip? Okay? I like having the Nancy Drew episode
- 11:05was our mail coat. I think I think Nancy would approve. We could
- 11:15potentially save this, Emily. Do you have any ideas for team names?
- 11:18Rash I listen. I am a writer. I'm horrible at naming things.
- 11:24It's tough, it's very difficult. I'm trying to think if there is anything
- 11:30that's like named in the games, like a team or anything, and I'm
- 11:35not doing a good job at that. I kind of like Team Frank.
- 11:39But maybe can we make it like Frank? Something like Frank? Should we
- 11:43be Frank Drew? He would take her last name? Okay, Frank Drew.
- 11:52Frank Drew and the Softy Boys a great band name. If I can
- 11:58see myself going to the gigs, fantastic. Yes, So we have the
- 12:05Softy Boys versus Frank Drew. A couple of good team names there, Yes,
- 12:09I love it all right? And if you're listening to this and thinking
- 12:13you'll seem pleasant, But I don't know myn Nancy Drew from my Nancy Pelosi.
- 12:18Don't worry his order with a little segment we like to call passing knowledge.
- 12:22Nancy Drew is a fictional detective intended as a female counterpart to the Hardy
- 12:28Boys, because it takes two guys to be as good as one girl.
- 12:31Nice Ah, Now I remember you. If life were a good book,
- 12:37you would be my favorite reoccurring character. Originally introduced as novels in the nineteen
- 12:43thirties, Nancy Drew has appeared in comics, films, and TV shows.
- 12:48But most importantly to me and every other millennial woman I have ever spoken to,
- 12:52a series of cult computer games made by her Interactive It's Locked, It's
- 12:58Locked, It's Locked. There are thirty three games in total so far,
- 13:01and each game features Nancy cracking cases in unique locations and solving a ton of
- 13:07fun puzzles along the way. The games began releasing in nineteen ninety eight and
- 13:11boy can you tell, with the most recent release in twenty nineteen, and
- 13:16boy can you not tell? One spoon of baking powder? We're getting there
- 13:26that looks great, Let's tackle the next step. Like all great protagonists,
- 13:30Nancy Drew has an amazing set of undefined and consistently evolving skills that allow her
- 13:35to thwart crimes in Cells. Might refer to her as a Mary Sue,
- 13:39but if she is, so is Sherlock Holmes, Superman at James Bond and
- 13:43honestly, literally every other male character from the first half of the twentieth century
- 13:48equality can't check that off yet, do you hear something? Excuse me,
- 13:56I have to defuse this bomb. Now. Let's get our magnifying glasses and
- 14:01sleuth our way to the next mystery. Alleh, bye bye, ohiering,
- 14:07that was so good. But yes, triggering, Oh that was fantastic.
- 14:16Audright now. I normally asked, Haya, did you have fun researching this
- 14:20fandom? But I'm guessing you didn't have to do much research for this.
- 14:22I did a bit for the specific like in the thirties, and I thought
- 14:28that she was intended as a counterpart for the hardy boys, considering mystery solving
- 14:35youth. The hardy boys are in the games like things like that, but
- 14:39specifically it was written as girl hardy boys go yes, sell the books some
- 14:46of the like specific details nailing down but I knew, yah, I knew
- 14:50you know. It wasn't as big as researching Transformers No. Fifty. Just
- 15:00before we get to today's games, I've asked each player to bring in a
- 15:03muse. It's something that inspires them or something they love from this particular fandom.
- 15:09Nancy Drew is inspiring to me because the games have given order of the
- 15:11skills. She needs to find my killer. I know you're out there.
- 15:16I know you're miss Night. Jason. We'll start with you, because that's
- 15:22the format is we go to Jason first. It is inspiring you from the
- 15:26world of Drew Common Nancy uh So, I, like I said, tried
- 15:31to do four hours of research and Nancy Drew came up with not much more
- 15:33information than when I started. However, what I did start with in Nancy
- 15:39Drew. My only touchstone to Nancy Drew in my life is co Captain Drew
- 15:43Stevenson. You're my muse. Oh nice, You've told me a lot about
- 15:48this. You've told me a lot about your childhood. How you are also
- 15:52like an intelligent girl and labeled as precocious because of that. I don't know
- 15:56if Nancy is even precocious. But like something cool, I'll make it a
- 16:00little emotional. Something cool about being friends with Adra and my extension Matt is
- 16:06for the longest time in my life, I was the smartest person in the
- 16:10room, or at least in my friend group. And then when I became
- 16:12friends with them, that quickly not didn't become true. And that's really bad
- 16:18news, because I wouldn't really consider myself smart. No, but the great
- 16:21thing about I don't know if you guys were ever told this in life,
- 16:23but the great thing about not being the smartest person in the room is you
- 16:26only have room to grow because of that. And so being friends with you,
- 16:30guys, I've learned so much about Nancy Drew No, but so much
- 16:37my best effort, so Adre is my music. That's I can't say that's
- 16:44not adorable. So I've got to say I'm very adorable, which is what
- 16:48I bring to my team, the softy boys. I will I will say
- 16:52just because I cannot, I cannot be complimented. And then I have learned
- 16:56so much from you as well. I don't all right, alright, each
- 17:00other performative competition, Okay, okay, it's a fantastic ammuse, Jason,
- 17:08thank you. Let's move on over to your teammates, Caroline. What's inspiring
- 17:11you from Nancy Drew? I mean, there is so much to be inspired
- 17:17by. There's the impeccable theming of every game. I think that there's just
- 17:22that's one of the places that it shines. But I have to mention and
- 17:26I'm wearing my shirt I did this last time, worring do it of George
- 17:30Paine George Faine, Hi, wo is my muse today because when I played
- 17:37Secret of Shadow Ranch when I was ten years old. You never even meet
- 17:42her, you never even see her. You just hear her talk on the
- 17:45phone, and I knew that I was in love. That's enough. You
- 17:51just need to hear her voice. That was all I needed. So I
- 17:56love her and your friend Nancy's friends too. Yeah, yeah, thank you.
- 18:03It's Look, it's always always good to be inspired by a character,
- 18:06and always good to be inspired by a character that makes you realize something about
- 18:08your sexuality. That's true. So early, I don't think I even knew
- 18:12or understood. I was just like, wow, I really love the way
- 18:15she sounds. Yeah, and not knowing it was the gadar pinging like,
- 18:23you know, yeah, it excites twenty twenty. It is, It is
- 18:29absolutely fantastic. Muse Let's let's move on over to team Frank Drew and we'll
- 18:36start with Emily. What's inspiring you from Nancy Drew? You know, I
- 18:40saw that you were going to ask me this question, so I was thinking
- 18:42about it and I was like, I don't know, and it feels very
- 18:48cliche, but I would have to say Nancy herself is very resource Yes,
- 18:55always thrown into situations where she doesn't have a hand book on what to do.
- 19:00She just has like a giant broom that she keeps in a Mary Poppin's
- 19:04bag, and she makes it useful in some way. And I love that
- 19:11resourcefulness that she has to be able to get the job done even with the
- 19:15forces of evil working against her a lot of the time. So yeah,
- 19:22yes, yeah, very very resultful. Yeah, nice cliche, but like,
- 19:27honestly, again, to be inspired by a character, even if it's
- 19:30the main character, that's what they're full. Yeah, it's called true,
- 19:34it's not called girls history. Inspired by the main character. Yeah, so
- 19:41good. I think for a lot of main characters. Barbie, we see
- 19:45and yes, she does have computer games, but not in the same way
- 19:49like I saw it as I started to say it, But Nancy Drew in
- 19:55gaming in general, there is this extra layer of you can do this,
- 19:59like, oh, Nancy Drew is resourceful. I'm resourceful, I am intelligent,
- 20:03I can figure this out. That is at the core of Nancy Drew.
- 20:08That's the power of the protagonist. So yeah, absolutely a great muse
- 20:11that something good to be inspired by. And finally, oudro, what's inspiring
- 20:15you from the world of Nancy Drew Jesson. I'd like saying it because it's
- 20:19Rhyme's Jason me No, not you, because of I am inspired by Ned,
- 20:32Nancy's boyfriend, to not put myself in a relationship with someone who has
- 20:37a negative amount of interest in the things that are my whole life. Oh.
- 20:42Ned has no interest in mystery solving, He has no interest in anything
- 20:49that is Nancy's entire world other than pouting that Nancy's not with him. And
- 20:56thank you to Ned for teaching me to enter into those relationships. Also,
- 21:03puzzle games. I like puzzle games and I still do, and they have
- 21:07introduced me to a whole new world, but mainly mainly putting ned on blast.
- 21:11Yeah, no, that's that's good. Call out the characters that.
- 21:17It's why I didn't want to link it to you. I'm the net of
- 21:21this podcast. No, no interest in solving mystery. Okay, fair there,
- 21:27No, that's that's that's great. It's a good mews. You can
- 21:30also mention in the puzzles there. That's a huge aspect of the Nancy Drew
- 21:33games. Uh. They that's the part where I could see myself like,
- 21:37I've watched you play a handful of games and I remember looking over your shoulder
- 21:40and being like, have you tried have you tried this? Okay? But
- 21:42if you flip these too? Have you tried flipping these two? Okay?
- 21:45Yeah, let's go for that. Because I am interested in in solving mysteries,
- 21:53crucially fantastic stuff. I think we're all feeling suitably inspired. Okay,
- 21:59right, teams, let's gas up the blue roadster that Daddy bought us and
- 22:03cruise into round one. Round one is called can check that off yet doesn't
- 22:14work grammatically, but it is a reference. Nonetheless, this is a classic
- 22:18Gates Leapers game one where I'll give our teams a Nancy Drew themed category,
- 22:22followed by a list of five things from said category. It's up to our
- 22:26teams to select the real ones without picking the ones that I made up.
- 22:30If they select a fake, they'll be frozen out of the list. There's
- 22:34one point per correct answer. Are we ready? Yes? Yes, excellent.
- 22:41Now the first category that each team will have a list for is Nancy
- 22:44Drew video Games. So these are the titles of Nancy Drew video games.
- 22:48Are they real or are they fake? And the Softy Boys. Here is
- 22:52your first list of five Danger on Deception Island, The Phantom of Venice,
- 23:00The Mystery of the Hidden Castle, The Final Scene, and Secrets of Violet
- 23:07Manner. All right, Jason, I have great news for you because I
- 23:17always under the impression that they all have alliteration, and as soon as the
- 23:19first one or the second one did it, you lost me. Flue.
- 23:23I just thought that that was supposed to be all for all of them.
- 23:26But yeah, go ahead, currently, just pop off. Just sure whatever
- 23:30they say, slay girl, that's me okay. So I'm saying the ones
- 23:36that are correct, right, Yes, that is correct. So Danger,
- 23:41you said Danger on Deception Island, that is correct, That is correct.
- 23:45That's the points Boom, Phantom of your is correct. You find some of
- 23:51Venice that is also correct. And then what was the fourth one? You
- 23:55said? The fourth one I said, was the final scene. Yes,
- 23:57that's the other one. Yeah, that's three for three. Boom on titles
- 24:03of and there are thirty three games, as Udra mentions, there's a lot
- 24:07of titles to remember them. Yeah, The Mystery of the Hidden Castle,
- 24:11Secrets of Violent Manner, not even tempted, No, no, sorry,
- 24:17I think was a book I was playing on lilac in and then going with
- 24:21Violet Manner instead. But you can't see. You can't trick Nancy Drew fans.
- 24:25That's what I'm learning. We're too hardcore, too hard, too hard.
- 24:32And with that, let's have a list for Frank true and let's see,
- 24:36let's see if Emily can get three for three, and maybe Oordra,
- 24:37I shouldn't. I shouldn't treat you like you were a Jason Hello, boom
- 24:45hype man. Yeah, here is your list of five games. The Forgotten
- 24:48Clue, Mystery in the Hollywood Hills, The Deadly Device, Legend of the
- 24:56Crystal Skull, Ghosts of Blackwater by you. So I'm saying the correct ones,
- 25:06Yes, yes, I do have to say I sorry. Can you
- 25:11say the first two again? Absolutely? The Forgotten Clue and Mystery in the
- 25:17Hollywood Hills. So, unless I'm wrong, I believe the only two on
- 25:22this list are correct. Okay, there are three that are correct, but
- 25:26one is a little bit tricksy because they did. Oh you're trying to trick
- 25:33me. This is so deadly device and Legend of the Crystal Skull, the
- 25:41legend of the Chrystal Skull, the one that Jason left at Israel. Two
- 25:47points there, very good stuff. So okay, can I hear the other
- 25:51three again? Yeah? Absolutely? You have the Forgotten Clue, Mystery in
- 25:56the Hollywood Hills, and Ghosts of Blackwater? Buy You Adre? Do you
- 26:02know? I don't, I do not know. I'm leaning. I'm leaning
- 26:07towards the first one, and I have no I am as well, So
- 26:11let's go with that. The Forgotten Clue, Yes, the Forgotten Clue.
- 26:17I'm so sorry I made that one up. What was it? It was
- 26:21Mystery in the Hollywood Hills that was released for the very short lived handheld console,
- 26:26the leap Frog. Did You was an official canonical game book. It's
- 26:36obviously hard to find now A full disclosure. I knew this is what the
- 26:40teams were going to be, and so I kind of stuck hard ones.
- 26:44I will say that was a little sneaky, but I'm more than confident that
- 26:48we can make it up good stuff. I like that. Yes, we
- 26:55like it, we like to see it. Yes, we'll come back for
- 26:59sure. And don't be afraid to call Matt out on this bullshit. If
- 27:02I know anything about Nancy Drew, that's very Nancy Drew thing to do.
- 27:04Maybe should I say sassy is what we I cried? Why did you think
- 27:11that was appropriate? I can't call it. I'll crumble. I cried,
- 27:15and then I ended up being wrong. So now I just looked back,
- 27:21keep going. It's okay, we love it. It's a fantastic first past
- 27:25there. But now we're going to move back in time a little bit and
- 27:27we're going to talk about Nancy drew original novel titles. So we're talking about
- 27:33the books release between nineteen thirty and nineteen seventy nine, comfortably before all of
- 27:38us were born. Comfortably Okay, So back on over to the Softy Boys.
- 27:47Here is your list of five. The Secret of the Wooden Lady,
- 27:52The Mystery of the Checkerboard Sign, The Clue of the Whistling Bagpipes, The
- 27:57Mystery of the fire a Dragon, and the Secret of Albatross Cove. Oh
- 28:04man, okay, I know one. Oh is it the Secret of the
- 28:10Whistling Bag Pipes. That's definitely one. It absolutely is one. That's a
- 28:15point right there. Nice. Nice. I lean towards Albatross Cove because that
- 28:21just feels like a book title. Am I wrong in that? Yeah?
- 28:26I'm open to having that be the next one that we we get. Do
- 28:30you have a do you have an if you have like zero shot like I
- 28:33have, could you read them again? Absolutely? We've got just the Yes,
- 28:40we've got Wooden Lady, which you've got I know, which you don't
- 28:42have. We've got Wooden Lady lady. Okay, play it for the audience.
- 28:48It's all right. Yeah, we've got Wooden Lady, we've got checkerboard
- 28:52sign, we've got fire Dragon and Albatross Cove. Okay, So I think
- 28:59maybe we should do the Wooden Lady. Okay, Oh, why have it?
- 29:02Would you choose that? I don't know, just the hunch. Well,
- 29:10it's a good hunch. I'm gonna have to leave that in now.
- 29:15Yes, you've got that all right now, Now Jason gets a point a
- 29:22wooden Lady, fire dragon, Oh, checkerboard sign. They're all very good.
- 29:26Albatross Cove speaks to me. M M big fan of Albatros. Sound
- 29:30for that they have the longest that span. Yeah, I think so.
- 29:34In fact, I know things my animals, not Nancy Drew. So you
- 29:38go move do the Secrets of Albatross Cove. Yeah, it's made up.
- 29:45I'm so sorry you the other one. The other one was The Mystery of
- 29:49the Fire Dragon. I was leaning towards that. That's why you said it
- 29:56like Alvatros. I thought like a fire dragon. I knew it was like
- 30:00a real dragon. It was probably like on a flag or something like that.
- 30:03Sure, yeah, yeah, you don't know it in Wales. Okay.
- 30:08I got a couple of two out of three. Yes, yeah,
- 30:12that's pretty good. I'll try and make it fair and give one away to
- 30:15the other. Okay, Frank Drew, here is your list of five Nancy
- 30:22Drew novels. The Clue of the Dancing Puppet, The Secret of Mirror Bay,
- 30:29The Mystery of the Roman Centurion, The Clue behind the Fireplace, or
- 30:36the Message in the hollow Oak. So that one message of the whole you
- 30:49want to go with. Oh, absolutely, that's correct. There's the pes.
- 30:53Yes, yes, I know the other two for sure. Oh wow,
- 31:02amazing, incredible, but only because I don't even know if I've read
- 31:07them. But sorry, can you say the first two for me again?
- 31:11Absolutely? Yes, it's the Clue of the Dancing Puppets and the Secret of
- 31:15Mirror Bay. Yeah, it's those two. It's those two. Yes,
- 31:21it is those two. Gosh, I probably would have gone for the fireplace
- 31:26one because of like that feels like, yeah, a prime hidden passage location.
- 31:32I was wondering about this one until I heard the last one and then
- 31:37and I knew the first two. Then I was like, oh, I
- 31:38should have coughed on the first one. Look, it's all fair now,
- 31:45it's fine. Yes, Emily said you guys would catch up, and that's
- 31:49kind of crazy that it has happened. Sure she is. Now, it's
- 31:53all fair and good knowledge, good knowledge. Okay. We will move on
- 31:59to our final category. It is original recurring game characters. So these are
- 32:05these are game characters that appear in more than one Nancy Drew game, and
- 32:08these are their names, and we will we will start with the Softy Boys,
- 32:13and here is your list of five characters. Dwayne Powers, Oh my
- 32:19god, sorry, yeah, yes, Britt Shepley, Prudence Rutherford, Ned
- 32:29Nickerson, and Constance Drake. Okay, Jason and I have great news for
- 32:35you. We know all. I know all the answers. The first one,
- 32:42Dwayne Powers is yes, he bears in two games and absolutely true.
- 32:46Ye. Could I ask why you laughed at Dwayne Powers other than it is
- 32:50kind of a funny name. Well you can have. There's one Nancy Drew
- 32:53game that was discontinued back in twenty twenty due to the rise of the Black
- 33:00Lives Matter movement, and it is because Dwayne Powers decides to do blackface in
- 33:05this game. Wow, what the hell did you know that that I read
- 33:10about the discontinued thing, I did not make the connection between it being Dwayne
- 33:14Powers on this lifestyle Jesus, It's more of a knock on the creators.
- 33:20Also, everyone like it's yeah common, it's not a gotten that it was
- 33:24included. So if that is any reassurance, Crazy Crazy discontinued at least,
- 33:31yeah, right exactly. So that's why I laugh, because that's really funny.
- 33:37Okay, and then Prudence Rutherford of them a good impression, issume,
- 33:47yes, thank you, Yes, that is absolutely correct. Prudence for the
- 33:52foot is real. Yeah, she is real, and I wish she was
- 33:55actually real. And then lastly we have well Ned Nickerson because he's the boyfriend
- 34:05and he's on a phone contact for most of the games. Yeah, he's
- 34:08been referenced already that there he is. There's Ned is three for three.
- 34:15I thought you would know potentially all three of them because on your Guys' show
- 34:21you have like a section dedicated just to the characters and generally speaking the voice
- 34:27actors who play them. So that's like in there and that's sick. Yeah,
- 34:31okay, thank you. Also, I'm here and I'm participating. Next
- 34:37time I'll have you get like try to guess and then I'll a child you
- 34:43can try. You can have a little turn. Yeah. And although that
- 34:46was the last list of Okay, the final list is for Frank Drew and
- 34:54here is your list of five characters. Hannah Gruin, Freddie Herringham, Beatrice
- 35:01Hotchkiss, Samantha Quick and peeps. I know Beatrice hash Kiss. I know
- 35:09hotch Kiss for sure. Okay, both confident I can give you the other
- 35:15two. That's the point. Kiss, it's getting hard to trick people with
- 35:22these games. This is a fandom fit. We go hard. Yes,
- 35:29twenty years I've served. The other ones are Hannah Gruin and Samantha Quick.
- 35:42So if I may say, Samantha Quick is multiple people, so it gets
- 35:45kind of complicated, really like multiple personality. How sensitive should we be around
- 35:52this? Oh? I mean it depends she It depends on how you feel
- 35:59about dancing in a leather cat suit. How do we feel about that?
- 36:06I mean it's like a great time. And then she's a fun girl to
- 36:08be around, excellent interest. We like Samantha Quick, not not tempted by
- 36:15Lucinda peeps alas. It's great. Yeah, points for creativities. Someone's given
- 36:28me a point on this. Just give myself a point there. Okay,
- 36:34that is the end of round one. Let's ask Nancy to calculate the scores.
- 36:37She's the main character, but she's also the smart one, and those
- 36:42scores are it's all tied up. Both teams are on eight points. That's
- 36:47crazy. That's crazy, wild, incredible. Oh and I have one point.
- 36:52Even crazy. You're considering someone has me on the team, so that's
- 36:58crazy. Yeah, he so let's see where it goes. Yes, step
- 37:00it up, Frank Drew? Is that okay? Up? Next this round
- 37:06two, But first we have to play some ads. There are clues to
- 37:09the quick Fire around hidden in commercials one and three, so make sure you
- 37:14listen to those ads as many times as possible. Yeah, back in a
- 37:17bit. Round two is called flash Fiction. It's the improvisation game that asks
- 37:29our teams to make some new, interesting, and hopefully hilarious fan fiction with
- 37:32a twist. It must be composed one word at a time, so I
- 37:37will give our teams an opening phrase, then going back and forth as a
- 37:42pair, saying one word at a time, they must compose an original piece
- 37:45of flash fiction. However, their captains must first roll the Vibe Cube TM
- 37:54and you've got to think about the branding. It actually sounds like a sex
- 37:57toy. On this cube are six different words that have kind of like themes
- 38:02tones vibes to them. And if you get bonus points if you can make
- 38:07your flash fiction take that sort of direction. If you don't, you could
- 38:12still score points. This is just the new thing that we're trying that could
- 38:15be fun. I like it. Yeah, Yeah, Sometimes the prompts won't
- 38:20match the tone. But now I'm just explaining the joke to this round,
- 38:23so let's get on with it. The themes on the dice, I guess
- 38:25we'll just find out as we roll them. So let's begin with the softy
- 38:30boys. Jason, if you'd like to you'd like to roll the cube?
- 38:36We have? Yes, mysterious. Mysterious is the vibe? Okay, and
- 38:40your prompt that you will begin your flash fiction with is Nancy opened the door
- 38:47to the seller. We're already mysterious. Yeah, pretty serious? Could we
- 38:53could still mess it up? Though? Nancy opened the door to the cellar
- 38:58and there was wine. Mystery, So, Jason, would you like to
- 39:06kick us off? And the pair of you just go back and forth until
- 39:08we reach a natural conclusion. Okay? She looked down and saw stairs as
- 39:22one does, leading two nowhere. So mysterious, so mysterious, full stop,
- 39:34full period, a new sentence at midnight, the bell chimes period.
- 39:45Yes, do you want to continue? One more? One more? Screams?
- 39:52Did you just say screams? Yes, came out of Nancy. We
- 40:05have our original piece of fanfiction, beautifully composed. Nancy opened the door to
- 40:09the cellar, She looked down and saw stairs leading to nowhere. At midnight,
- 40:15the bell chimes. Screams came out of Nancy. It's very mysterious.
- 40:23It's mystery. You kept me guessing that it's great. I'm straight four points
- 40:29what I'm terrible? Give me the cube. Okay, yes, we will
- 40:38move over to Frank Drew. Let's find out what your vibe will be.
- 40:44I wanted to try to spin it between my fingers. That's not happening.
- 40:46Let's roll it. Thrilling. Oh, okay, thrilling. Okay, okay,
- 40:55you have thrilling, and here is your setup. You're prompt. Nancy
- 41:00questioned the housekeeper about I'm really bad at this. I'm just gonna let you
- 41:06know I'm a little too contemplative. Her scary. I saw the moment you
- 41:22realized you'd taken too long, and then when I take so long, it
- 41:27feels like the next word has to be a banger. You've got. So
- 41:30far, you've got. Nancy questioned the housekeeper about her scary energy. Nice
- 41:38asking. I'll open up quotation here. Yes, yes, how is your
- 41:49dead father? It was between father and son. Okay, so far we've
- 42:00got, Nazi questioned the housekeeper about her scary energy, asking how is your
- 42:04dead father? I'll give you you got one sentence to try and bring this
- 42:08around. She gasped, full stop. No, unless you want to full
- 42:20stop, I have no we need to. I have a good direction for
- 42:24this, so we just need to sync up. Are you ready? Okay?
- 42:28Nice? Nice? Take it away? Yes, okay, Sorry,
- 42:30what was the last word you said? I just said gasp. I was
- 42:34trying to make it a I'm just going to bring a shocking energy and we
- 42:37open up another quotation. Do I use a word absolutely? Okay, he's
- 42:43There's two ways that I can do. He's not gone yet, He's not
- 42:52dead. That is thrilling. Well, that really came around. You would
- 43:00say either not or still? Okay? Yes, nice, nice, and
- 43:06you made it work. Here is your piece of thrilling. Nancy Drew fan
- 43:08fiction. Nancy questioned the housekeeper about her scary energy, asking how is your
- 43:14dead father? She gasped, He's not gone yet. This guy is actually
- 43:20pretty thrilling. She does have a scary She refers and says, he's not
- 43:24dead yet. That's a scary energy. I think you brought it around a
- 43:30bit. At the end. I'm going to say three points three points for
- 43:32that one. No sounds fair. Absolutely brought it back side note to edit
- 43:38out. It was thrilling from an audience to point like the posits are gonna
- 43:46get edited out. But as I was thrilled, it's a mystery. It's
- 43:54so thrilling. Okay, if I mean we we're gonna to play one more
- 44:00pass at that we're gonna go again. So I'm sorry Audra and Emily if
- 44:05that was a struggle, that is okay. I enjoy it. For the
- 44:10amount of pain that is on my face. I am having fun. Okay,
- 44:16just some some more basic prompt this time, we're going to kind of
- 44:21let the cube decide if you'd like to roll the cube? Yes, gritty,
- 44:25gritty, gritty, got kind of the gritty Nancy drew story here,
- 44:30and the simple prompt is George cold, simple prompt. Oh yeah, you
- 44:37gotta make it gritty. So would you like to start? Caroline? I
- 44:39was just what to say. Sure, George called quotation, Yes, yes,
- 44:50hey, that's voice acting that we know and love. Quotation. Nancy
- 45:04said, wait did you end the quotation? I ended the quotation and then
- 45:07Nancy, yeah, Nancy said, hey, what are you sorry? I
- 45:19know that's gonna have a follow on. But it's just like friend, what
- 45:25I don't I don't know if this is gritty? What are you wearing?
- 45:30I don't know who George? I think there's another one on the cube for
- 45:34that. I like this vibe. Well, look we've got it. You've
- 45:38said it. Now, So what are you wearing? Nancy? Oh?
- 45:43End the quotation. Yes, yes it is George. Wait, hold on,
- 45:45is George asking this question? Is Nancy asking this question? Nancy asked?
- 45:49Or sorry, George asked the question? Oh? George asked the question.
- 45:52Nancy said, Hey, what are you wearing? Oh so Nancy?
- 45:54Oh? Nancy said, wait, oh I thought it was Hey. Nancy
- 45:59said, oh, so we've got George cold. Hey Nancy said, hey,
- 46:04what are you wearing? In this ritty story, we're definitely in sync.
- 46:14Yeah, speaking, which is it your turn? Of my turn?
- 46:19It's Caroline? Okay? Oh? Oh? Nancy said, uh, or
- 46:22no, sorry, Nancy, I'll do this. Nancy hung, oh no,
- 46:28wait, my brain went on a really bad I know, I know,
- 46:30I did, I know, I did. What the pause happened?
- 46:31It's like up? Nice? Uh okay, so Nancy hung up? Uh?
- 46:42Who is George? Should I know Nancy's friend. Yeah, this is
- 46:47George. Okay, shirt. Okay, now we're gonna do another one.
- 46:53George dot frantic and ran two the cellar. All right, I've got I'm
- 47:08gonna stop you there. I think you know it's going somewhere sentence. He
- 47:16ran to the cellar. The knife gleamed as he stabbed Ned first. Okay,
- 47:34I think that kind of does make sense. Just a woman if I
- 47:37swap and I think it makes sense, So I'll do the favor of that.
- 47:43Fine, So we've got George cold. Hey, Nancy said, hey,
- 47:47what are you wearing? Nancy hung up. George got frantic and ran
- 47:53to the cellar. The knife gleamed. She stabbed Ned. It's gritty.
- 48:00It makes sense in cannon if you say so. It's not as strong as
- 48:05your last outing. So I'm gonna say also three points for this one.
- 48:07But you brought it around a lot more than I thought you were. Well,
- 48:14she stabbed because she wanted him out of the picture. The cannon is
- 48:17there. A few of three of the points are for the cannon checks out.
- 48:22Thank god, Oh fantastic. Okay, Udra taking a big drink.
- 48:28Yes, would you like to roll the cue? Yes for Frank Drew's final
- 48:35piece of original flash fiction. Okay it is. It's horny. Yeah,
- 48:44it's horney, and it might be a might be a solid prompt kick things
- 48:50off. Ned confessed. Is the is the start of your piece of flash
- 48:55fiction? Would would you like to pick it up when you're ready? Emily?
- 48:59Okay, quotation Nancy, I've been thinking about do I take the big
- 49:13swing? Yes, Frank, I'm open. Oh of all the words could
- 49:30have chosen to us having a three sub Oah, amazing, let's should we
- 49:46have? Nancy's reply, Oh yeah, continue the story please. Okay,
- 49:52it's riveting. Sorry that was the word I was just saying. I'm riveted.
- 49:58Yeah, Nancy replied, I've also been considering that possibility. Just like
- 50:16how real people talk. It's just a couple of people really having an open
- 50:25dialogue. It's a horny story, but it's also a healthy that's all good
- 50:34communication. Yes, honestly, Like this is this is how you ask for
- 50:38a reason. I mean, if you want to add a third sentence to
- 50:42it, I'll offer it, like if you feel like you want to want
- 50:45it to round it out anywhere, or we can end it there. It's
- 50:47up to you. We could if you wanted to, We could round it
- 50:51out with just kind of a non dialogue sentence that sets the scene. Shall
- 50:58we say? Yeah? Okay, this is thinking Horney. Frank entered Jesus
- 51:10and whipped God out? All right? Rented it there? We can't it
- 51:30can't get any horror in this room. Okay, you're the piece of flash
- 51:35fiction, Ned confessed Nancy. I've been thinking about Frank. I'm open to
- 51:38us having a threesome. Nancy replied, I've also been considering that possible.
- 51:44Frank entered and whipped it out. Really, I've got to give you the
- 51:49full five points. It's horn dog, Frank Jesus. Oh fantastic. Okay,
- 51:58let's move on from flash fiction now, God bless us everyone. That's
- 52:04the end of the round. I believe the latest scores are inside this safe.
- 52:08It's locked, It's locked, It's locked. Is the Nancy Drew fan
- 52:14podcast that you should subscribe to today? Nice? Okay, those scores are
- 52:20The Softy Boys are on fifteen points, but Frank Drew are just in the
- 52:23lead with sixteen points. Oh yeah, baby? Round three? Next?
- 52:30Where wait? Is that a secret passage to the next round? Let's take
- 52:36it to see what we find. Oh, it's full of commercials. Round
- 52:45three is called reddit on Reddit. Didn't mean for it to rhyme, but
- 52:49there I said it. In this game, I will read genuine anonymous Reddit
- 52:54comments from the Nancy Drew fandom. Our teams must then decipher those comments to
- 52:59try and work account which game in the series the user is describing. It's
- 53:04a game about how well you know your fans, your fellow fans, but
- 53:07in a specific order of the Internet. Yes, nice, and I've changed
- 53:12the user names of everyone for anonymity. We will start with the Softy Boys.
- 53:17This comes from user queer coded Bess and they had to say most people
- 53:24don't like it. In my opinion, there's still some enjoyable aspects of it.
- 53:30The Hardy Boys and Deirdre are great in it, and there's some good
- 53:32scares, for instance, But it's definitely not the strongest Nancy Drew game.
- 53:37I would suggest picking it up when it's on sale. All right, Jason,
- 53:43you have any ideas is Deirdre in Midnight in sale? Because that's the
- 53:46only game I know she is And I actually think that that is the correct
- 53:52answer, because I am dialed into the community of the jet you understand feeding
- 54:00you knowledge? Yes, yes, yes, yes, I know this.
- 54:04Let's walk in Midnight and Salem it absolutely midnight. I'm kind of curious Caroline.
- 54:13As a host of a Nancy Tree podcast, what were your opinions on
- 54:16Midnight in Salem? Oh Man, there were so many that we had to
- 54:22make a whole episode talking about it, which you can find on their feet
- 54:28you can't. No, I thought that it was kind of boring, if
- 54:34I'm being honest. That was how I felt about it. It was boring,
- 54:37and there was too much talking not enough puzzling it. That was how
- 54:40I felt about it. There were fewer puzzles than I had remembered. Yeah,
- 54:45I think. Yeah, I think it got a couple extra points for
- 54:49me because it was my first one back, and so there was like a
- 54:52yes, I'm inning right right. But then you'll go back and play the
- 54:58ones in that chunk that you haven't played, and you're going to be like,
- 55:00oh, wow, these are so much better. There really is.
- 55:05There is a little sweet part of games that you missed that you haven't played.
- 55:12Yeah, I would say like games seventeen through maybe twenty three or twenty
- 55:17four. Yeah, yeah, thank you. The Golden Age. The best
- 55:22is yet to come for me. Yeah, I know you have so much
- 55:27forward to I feel like I'm being entered into a cold right now. Watch
- 55:35That's exactly what just fandom pull you in like one. Okay, we will
- 55:40move over to Frank Drew. Here is your Reddit comments and it comes from
- 55:45user da ned and they had to say, even though the remaster has a
- 55:51slightly different story than the original, I found the quality of life too good
- 55:55to pass up. I remember my parents buying me this game and being far
- 55:59too young to properly understand the final puzzle without any of their help. Is
- 56:04this one Secrets Can Kill? If you did the remaster on that one?
- 56:08Secrets Can't Kill remastered? Baby, I think that's the only one they've remastered.
- 56:15Yeah, it absolutely is, and it is Secrets can Kill Emily.
- 56:19If you played Secrets Can Kill, of course you have. Of course you
- 56:22have. Oh yeah, oh yeah, both of them. Both the guys,
- 56:28do you prefer the original being a two decade long fan That's a good
- 56:32question because when so, it's if you're listening and you don't know about the
- 56:38Nancy Drew series. Secrets Can Kills the very first game that they released in
- 56:43nineteen ninety eight, and it's so funny going even just from the first to
- 56:49the second game. The first game is very cartoon graphics, like, very
- 56:52very point and click. There's not a lot of integration into the environment,
- 56:58and the ending isn't hold up. In the ending, do you care if
- 57:01I spoil it? Anybody? He's from ninety eight? If they don't know,
- 57:07what if you want to play and they don't know? So in the
- 57:12end, a gun appears in Nancy's inventory and she gets to shoot someone the
- 57:22first video, Yeah, baby, they never do that, Nancy. I
- 57:28know, Yes, give Nancy a gun has become something that we say relatively
- 57:36regularly, the child of a lawyer just with a gun. I know how
- 57:43she's cry she's going around because she's committing the crime for tat. So I
- 57:53think I have to say I if I was playing them both for the first
- 57:58time and had no bias, I would probably prefer the remastered. However,
- 58:01the first one is just so iconic. It's just iconic. It started it
- 58:07all, Yes, it started all, and now here we are today,
- 58:09So yeah, recording a highly specific game show podcast. Okay, back on
- 58:17over to the Softy Boys. Here is your Reddit comment from user Fancy Drew
- 58:23and they had to say it was undoubtedly my favorite so far. I have
- 58:28always been curious about mystical subjects like astrology and alchemy, and this game tied
- 58:34together mystics and puzzling in a beautiful way. The setting was beautiful and had
- 58:38so many damn secrets. It's crazy. All right, Jason, you have
- 58:44a guess. I want you to show him a list of title and I
- 58:49should I get him my list If I have a list, I feel like
- 58:52otherwise Jason's just going to make one up. The Winds of what Toomb,
- 58:57the Egosts of Hoorograph. These are names of doctor Strange items scroll on this
- 59:07list. Really, it doesn't matter, Jason, just just curious what your
- 59:13guests might be based on the titles. Very descriptive. Yeah, I mean
- 59:19there's nothing more spooky than the ghost Dogs of Moon Lake. Okay, it
- 59:23horrified me as a child, So yeah, it is a scary scene,
- 59:29is terrifying. Yeah, dog dies, no you Jesus, the way around
- 59:37Lost Queen, the Silent Spy. Yeah, I've got I've got really nothing
- 59:44here. But the other things I'll say is usually it's Matt focuses on.
- 59:51This is the popular opinion as well. This this comment is quite descriptive and
- 59:54so you probably already know it off the top of your head. But one
- 59:58thing to to know is it's got to be the popular opinion. Maybe not
- 1:00:02necessary yours, because I don't know if there's multiple Nancy games with alchemy and
- 1:00:07warnings at Waverley Academy. We've talked about a lot, and that's just happened
- 1:00:10in my eyeballs. So she saw it and remembered it. Get distracted by
- 1:00:16colors and shapes in front of the pumpkin? Is that going to violence on
- 1:00:21that? Is that good? It's yeah, So I'll defer to you and
- 1:00:25trust you solely. Well, I think this is talking about Curse of Black
- 1:00:30more manner. Oh, it absolutely is talking about the Curse of Black Momenta.
- 1:00:36Amazing, amazing. Is that extra spooky than the others, especially Ghost
- 1:00:42Dogs of Blackla like it is? I said, when when looking at like
- 1:00:45a list of like the scariest Nancy Drew games, it usually comes up.
- 1:00:49It's not the scariest, I think, but it's definitely got some spook It's
- 1:00:53a good good one for Halloween. Yeah, nice, another one for Roder's
- 1:00:58list. Yeah, it's one of the best. Yeah it is. It's
- 1:01:02like one of the best critically the ones I owned and I rewatched it recently.
- 1:01:08Oh it's so good, nice good stuff. Okay, back on over
- 1:01:15to Frank Drew and this comment comes from user Dancy Drew. That's Dancy Drew.
- 1:01:20I got bored rhyme. I'm so glad Audre you did the rhymes with
- 1:01:23the Drews. And because we don't compare notes before we start this, so
- 1:01:30I know, I almost did that almost was like Caroline, what about Barbara
- 1:01:35Blue and Tina too and things like that. Yeah. The one thing in
- 1:01:39my head was, don't say drawing, because that's already Nancy Drew and I
- 1:01:44did immediately. Okay, here's your reddit comment. I find it interesting how
- 1:01:51many people recommend this as someone's first game. I always wonder how much of
- 1:01:55that is due to their childhood nostalgia. Because of the clunky of the navigation,
- 1:02:00a boring culprit, and the touchiness of the end hot spot, I
- 1:02:05personally don't think it's a good way to introduce a first time player. I
- 1:02:09am oscillating between two and I'll tell you what my gut instinct says. My
- 1:02:17gut instinct is saying message in a haunted mansion, because I know that that's
- 1:02:25often recommended to first time players. However, all of those other things also
- 1:02:30apply. My second guest would be stay tuned for danger, but that's not
- 1:02:37super recommended. So do you have any thoughts as someone who I haven't been
- 1:02:45too big in, like, what is the community's opinion? My two that
- 1:02:50I feel like people might say would be either treasure in the Royal Tower or
- 1:02:54message in a haunted mansion. And so yeah, we have that one in
- 1:03:00the overlapping area of our venn diagram. Mm hmm, So I feel comfortable
- 1:03:05with that. Okay, let's go with message in the heart, message in
- 1:03:08the haunted mansion. It's not messaging a slightly tougher being. The two experts
- 1:03:15I give you is a treasure in the Royal Tower, because treasure in the
- 1:03:21Royal Tower. Yes, yeah, yes, oh I was That was my
- 1:03:27second guest after because I was with you both with message and mansion so awkward
- 1:03:34and they both do have they have weird ending hot spots. Yeah, yeah,
- 1:03:38that's true. That's tricky. Okay, yeah, tough tough one,
- 1:03:43tough one. But uh well, there's one more chance. There's one more
- 1:03:45comment. We should come back. We can come back. Yeah, you
- 1:03:49said that last time and you absolutely did. Okay the softy boys. Here
- 1:03:54is your final Reddit comment and it comes from Necromancy Drew. I'll defend this
- 1:04:00game. It's interesting as long as you've played Tomb of the Lost Queen first
- 1:04:05and you accept that the mystery is not the point. They took a risk
- 1:04:10and it's extremely different from the other games, but that doesn't make it bad.
- 1:04:15I won't defend Ransom of the Seven Ships though, that's an equivocal,
- 1:04:17unequivocally the worst, which I now know why. So the big clue in
- 1:04:26this is that it's after Tomb of the Lost Queen, which I think is
- 1:04:30a big clue, which means it's later. I mean thinking about the games
- 1:04:32that come after that, the big one that deviates from the like norm,
- 1:04:41and I would argue needs this much defense in you know, its format would
- 1:04:47be the Shattered Medallion. But I'm also I also there's something about Labyrinth of
- 1:04:54Lies that comes up for me as well with this one. I think I'm
- 1:04:57gonna go with my gut. Oh it's up. I was going to say,
- 1:05:00do either of those games are they specifically connected to Tom because not only
- 1:05:03is it after, but they say like it has to make sense behind Oh
- 1:05:09wait, okay, so yes, because I believe, Man, I really
- 1:05:14hope I'm remembering this correctly. I believe Jason's not going to know either way.
- 1:05:19I know. Listen, Oh god, I'm totally like blanking. Well.
- 1:05:25The big thing with Shatter Medallion is it introduces this character, Sunny June,
- 1:05:28who's been like a like low key character, but then he actually becomes
- 1:05:31like a physical, real character. But I can't remember his role in Tomb
- 1:05:35of Lost Queens specifically, So I don't know what Shatter Medallion is the one
- 1:05:42that you are going with, and if it's got it some connection point to
- 1:05:45toomb, it's our best bet. Yeah, I'm just gonna go at that
- 1:05:48cooling with Shats Shatter Medallion. It is the Shats Medallion. Good stuff.
- 1:05:55Oh I remember now why it connects? Yes, the Aliens? How does
- 1:05:59it? Yeah? Oh the Aliens? And yeah, Jamilla, she's Jamilla
- 1:06:04is the phone contact in that we did it? Good stuff and I was
- 1:06:11there, Jason. Okay. We got one final comment. One final comment
- 1:06:15from user It's locked. Great podcast for someone who played the games in order
- 1:06:23as they were released. This marked a sharp drop off from the Golden Years.
- 1:06:28It was the first chore heavy game, and at that time it was
- 1:06:31a major letdown. But yeah, compared to what was yet to come,
- 1:06:35it's not that bad in hindsight. I just don't want to collect any more
- 1:06:40shells. Ha ha ha ha ha. You haven't. This is the first
- 1:06:45one after where you ended. I don't know why I'm blanking on the new
- 1:06:55list. Oh yeah, you can probably use less direcon game number fifteen is
- 1:07:04that? If anything, that's even more specific than that. It wasn't Danger
- 1:07:09and Deception Island. Didn't you have to do a lot of shorts on that
- 1:07:12one? Yeah, but I would consider that to be very much during the
- 1:07:16Golden Age, And you don't really collect shells. You can play with shells,
- 1:07:21but you collect shells in the I'm scrolling. Yes, it's that that
- 1:07:29one's Hawaii. Yes, I believe it's that one, but I didn't.
- 1:07:33I haven't played it. I'm gonna go with your not very good but lets
- 1:07:40get in. Yes, it is Creature of Capu Cave. I saw that
- 1:07:44shells were featured in three different games, and I was hoping that would throw
- 1:07:46it up. Creature of Capu Cave. It is there is a point.
- 1:07:50Yeah, yeah, you say it's like the first one of the Golden Age
- 1:07:55or like the first one, so well, uh, it's not the first
- 1:08:01one after the Golden Age. It's the first one in order that you haven't
- 1:08:05played yet, Audre. But I would say, well, fun fact,
- 1:08:11game number I think thirteen, A Secret of the Old Clock was originally going
- 1:08:16to be the last game in the series, like they were going to end
- 1:08:20it there, which is why they did so. And then that's the first
- 1:08:24book in the Nancy Jerw series, so they kind of threw it back to
- 1:08:29that to pay homage to that. And then after that game, the next
- 1:08:33one is the France one that you have played. Yeah, Thegetts, Yes,
- 1:08:43that one exactly. Okay, I can say that, but the maybe'll
- 1:08:46sound danger by design design. Yeah, and then the next few games are
- 1:08:54like fine, but Creature of Copho Cave. If you play that and understand
- 1:09:00the mystery was and what happened and what the culprits did, please let us
- 1:09:03know because we're still ok yeah, listeners, do you let it's luck?
- 1:09:11No, we did not something about pied apples, Okay, and we'll leave
- 1:09:20it at that as the mystery that is the end of round three. Let's
- 1:09:26see if we can solve this point and click sliding number puzzle to reveal the
- 1:09:30latest scores. Surprisingly difficult without the YouTube guide. Okay, the Softy Boy
- 1:09:38it's all tied up again and Frank Drew are both on eighteen points. Because
- 1:09:43we enter the quick fire around, I feel like any team could win,
- 1:09:48because that's what a tied score means. But before we get to the quick
- 1:09:55fire around, let's talk prizes. This episode Star Prize. It is the
- 1:10:00concept of mystery. It's important to keep a little mystery in your life,
- 1:10:03but maybe just wear something unexpected once in a while and not like do a
- 1:10:09bunch of murders or something. But our winning team will so you get that,
- 1:10:14you get the concept of mystery. That's yours. But our winning team
- 1:10:17will also receive original first edition prints of the nineteen thirties and nineteen forties Nancy
- 1:10:24Drew book series from before they edited out all of the casual xenophobia. I'm
- 1:10:30so I'm so sorry. Did you know that was the thing thirties and forties?
- 1:10:35I mean, oh, yeah, that's true, that's fair. Yeah,
- 1:10:39up, next is our crucial quick fire around, but first one final
- 1:10:43set of ads. It's up to you what those ads are, as they're
- 1:10:46based on your algorithm. Our final quick fire around will test your broader pop
- 1:10:58culture knowledge and it's coal detecting detectives. The mystery genre is filled with amateur
- 1:11:03sleuths and professional detectives alike, but would our players be able to recognize them
- 1:11:09from a series of clues? In this game, I will give our players
- 1:11:12clues to a detective from pop culture history. Those clues will be given in
- 1:11:15the style of Nick George and or Best giving you clues because guys, you
- 1:11:20could really use a hint. Yes, oh, and there's a classic Gates
- 1:11:28Leapers twist. In order to score the points, you need to say it's
- 1:11:31up to you as and then the answer. So whatever the detective it is,
- 1:11:36So it's up to you as Nancy Drew. It's quick fire, So
- 1:11:43buzz in by yelling out your team name. Let's practice that now, boys,
- 1:11:49Yes, perfect, this is exactly how it will work. So let's
- 1:11:54do an example to put all this madness together. If I said, have
- 1:12:00you tried talking to the man at two to one b Baker Street, he
- 1:12:03looks. Yes, Caroline, Charlotte Combs, it's up to you to me.
- 1:12:11Yes, so yes, Charlock Combs, absolutely correct answer. But if
- 1:12:15you don't say, it's up to you as damn and that I won't.
- 1:12:18I won't give you the points. I'm so sorry. Okay, but feel
- 1:12:23free to interrupt me at any point as I'm reading. Are we ready?
- 1:12:27Yes, yes, let's start the timer. Have you tried talking to the
- 1:12:30man with the eggs? His mustache is exquisite, Drew, Yes, Ordra,
- 1:12:38it's up to you as heircule. Yes, that is correct. It's
- 1:12:46one of her dudes. Oh yeah, Murder on the Orient Express. I
- 1:12:55see Queen of the Nile. I didn't watch that one, okay, for
- 1:12:58various reasons. Have you tried speaking to the retired school teacher I think she
- 1:13:03writes murder mystery novels now oh softy, Yes, Caroline, it's up to
- 1:13:09you, as Jessica Fletcher. Yes, it is murder, she wrote,
- 1:13:14Oh good stuff. Have you tried talking to that bullheaded pair of lads?
- 1:13:19They may have been doing this for longer than us, but our little guest,
- 1:13:23yes, Jason, is this It's up to you as the hardy boys.
- 1:13:31Too long on that. Have you tried speaking to that impossibly old lady
- 1:13:39she works with that cop, Sir Henry Clic No, sorry, Sir Henry
- 1:13:43Clithering. I think that's his real name. I think Agatha Christie based her
- 1:13:47on her crew. Oka this, I'm gonna let. I'm gonna let it's
- 1:13:56lucked aside because from our perspective, you both said that at the exact same
- 1:13:59time. Zached. Oh no, okay, well, Emily, we'll go
- 1:14:05with you. Yeah, yeah, that's that's true. Okay, you can
- 1:14:09go. I also might be wrong, but it's up to you as miss
- 1:14:13Marple. It is Miss Marple. Kay, Okay, I don't know any
- 1:14:18more pop culture to well, good job, we've got eight more. Have
- 1:14:28you tried chatting to that sarcastic southern gentleman great fashion boys? Yes, Jason,
- 1:14:34it's it's up to you as it's LeBlanc from glass Onion, isn't Isn't
- 1:14:43that his name's LeBlanc? That's not. If that was one of his names,
- 1:14:46I'd give you it, but it's not. It's not one of his
- 1:14:48names. No, I cannot remember his name. Oh I thought it was
- 1:14:50Leblu, yes, Uldra, I do remember his name? What is his
- 1:14:56name. It's up to you as Ben wah Blanc, Ben ye Ben,
- 1:15:00I've got Yeah. I think you're thinking of Matt LeBlanc from Friends, the
- 1:15:06Greatest technic question. I'm sorry, I fucked up. It's okay, I
- 1:15:12was I was being very picky. Have you tried speaking to that high school
- 1:15:15student, the one who's sort of a mid two thousands rip off of you.
- 1:15:19They've tried to revive her show a couple of times, but I don't
- 1:15:23know. I think the internet hates her actress, or maybe just her husband.
- 1:15:27I'm not online enough. A surname is a planet? Oh softy?
- 1:15:33Yes, Caroline is up to you as Veronica Mars. Yes, oh nice,
- 1:15:40nice. I've never seen that teen girls. I don't think many people
- 1:15:47have. Have you tried talking to that guy in the rubber suit. He's
- 1:15:51the richest guy in the city, and even though his parents in front of
- 1:15:56him, how do you call it a rubber suit? By the way,
- 1:15:59it's up to you you as Batman, Yes, Batman, Batman, the
- 1:16:02Ultimate Detective, the world's greatest detective. Yes. Have you tried chatting with
- 1:16:06the vampire, the one from la but who was born Yes, Caroline,
- 1:16:13it's up to you as Angel. It is it's Angel. Wow. Wow,
- 1:16:18I that was a nice little callback there. Have you tried talking to
- 1:16:25that very phobic man. I think he may also have OCD. It's hard
- 1:16:30to trill. Oh, I think it's just going to be Audra. Yeah,
- 1:16:33okay, it's up to you. As Monk. It is Monk,
- 1:16:36yes, from from Monk. Have you tried chatting with the man who started
- 1:16:43it all? That's right, the creation of Edgar Allan Poe, who all
- 1:16:45of the British authors copied off of. We're going way back for this one,
- 1:16:53way back. I just learned this two days ago. Oh wow,
- 1:16:59So gaunt man, whoever he is, and we want to take the nineteenth
- 1:17:03century detective's name, I'm not going to think of it. Okay, we'll
- 1:17:08pass on this one. It is a character called Sea Auguste Dupinto. Basically,
- 1:17:14is it written by Edgar Allan Poe, like twenty years before Sherlock Holmes,
- 1:17:18and he's essentially Sherlock Holmes, like the same characteristics. Another thing you
- 1:17:24credit for, Yeah, just another thing that Britain stole. Next one,
- 1:17:29have you tried speaking with the high school sleuth with purple eyes? She's stoic,
- 1:17:33intelligent, and mysterious. Oh softy, Yes, Caroline, it's up
- 1:17:40to you. It is Kyoko Kirie Geary. Yes, absolutely, whoa dang
- 1:17:48wo. Sorry was a good one. No that I wouldn't have got that
- 1:17:53either, but that was a good one. And quick before the buzzer.
- 1:17:57And finally, Nancy, have you tried talking to your own goddamn father?
- 1:18:01True? Yes, really, it's up to you as Carson drew. Yes,
- 1:18:09that's the that that went back and forth all throughout that round. I'll
- 1:18:16tease that we definitely have a definitive winner, but it could have been either
- 1:18:19team throughout all the time. But before we get to the final scores,
- 1:18:24I'd like to thank our players. You've all been super sluthor's. Although I'm
- 1:18:29so sorry you didn't notice that the first letters in all the answers in the
- 1:18:32quick fire around spell out the clue to where you can find the hidden emeralds.
- 1:18:39So sorry, you'll never find those emeralds. Does it actually spell some
- 1:18:43that? No, of course it's you. Dare you make me think that?
- 1:18:45For a second, I was like, that's why he didn't put Detective
- 1:18:48Pikachu in there. Exist. I don't believe I forgot Detective Pikachu. Yeah.
- 1:18:55Literally, I was waiting for that. I know, Okay, we're
- 1:18:57in sick because I was like, he's going to in here for some I
- 1:19:00should have thought, Okay, you're good. It's my favorite little detective.
- 1:19:05Okay, Caroline Emily, you host the brilliant Nancy Drew fan podcast, It's
