- 0:36This is the Eat More Carbs podcast.
- 0:38We're Riley Beatty Sports Nutrition, and we're a team of
- 0:40dietitians and we talk every Thursday about sports nutrition
- 0:43for the girlies. I'm Jenna and I'm the host of
- 0:45this podcast. And I'm Riley.
- 0:46I'm the founder of Riley Beatty Sports Nutrition, we like to
- 0:48call it around here RBSN. Happy 2026.
- 0:51Before we get in today's episode, we are going to do our
- 0:53high and low. So sharing just a little bit
- 0:55about our week, the good and the parts we wish have gone a little
- 0:57bit differently. Riley, as always, can you kick
- 0:59us off? I cannot believe it's 2026.
- 1:01That's not going to be my high or my low, but this is like
- 1:03actually insane. You know what's even crazier is
- 1:06that we're coming up on 10 years of knowing each other.
- 1:09I love that for us because I love you, but I'm unwell.
- 1:12You know, it seems almost impossible, right?
- 1:15I'm like, there's no way. There's no way.
- 1:17But yeah, wow. Look at us now.
- 1:20I know, I know man. Timeshare does fly.
- 1:23It does fly and that actually is related a little bit to my high
- 1:27and my low. So if you are a new listener to
- 1:29the Eat More Carves podcast, I have a daughter named Charlie
- 1:33who is going to be two in a couple of weeks, which I'm
- 1:36unwell also for that, but both my high and my low are kind of
- 1:39the same story and they have to do with her.
- 1:42So recently I've shared on the podcast a couple of times that
- 1:46like Charlie is really developing her vocabulary.
- 1:49We're chattering away all of the time and something that she
- 1:52started to do recently and this is the high.
- 1:54Part of the story. Is she started to walk around
- 1:58and go. I'm strong.
- 2:00Wait. And it's that.
- 2:01It's like literally the cutest thing because she'll be like
- 2:03it's heavy, but I strong and I'm like, heck yeah, you are strong
- 2:07girly, like let's. Go.
- 2:08Let's get it. I love that.
- 2:10The low part of the story is she also likes to say strong.
- 2:15And the way that it kind of developed is when she's like
- 2:17almost fighting me on something. So like when I'm trying to
- 2:20change her diaper and she like doesn't want her diaper to get
- 2:23changed and she's like trying to kick me in a loving way.
- 2:25We're OK, everybody. But she'll be like, I strong and
- 2:29I'm like, I love this for you. Like, yeah, you're independent.
- 2:32I love that you're strong but like can you not be strong
- 2:35against me please? Can you let me change your
- 2:37diaper? Oh my gosh.
- 2:39I love like hearing her personality kind of like
- 2:42developing. Is that the right way to say
- 2:43that? Like, just like her developing
- 2:44her personality, Obviously like I'm not there to see it, but
- 2:47just hearing the updates from you about like what she's picked
- 2:49up from, I don't know, it's just so cute.
- 2:51Like, I love it. It's so crazy too, because like
- 2:54I am like, I don't say, like, I don't walk around being like I'm
- 2:58strong and but like she's like I'm strong and I'm like, yeah.
- 3:02You are you're. Like you go, girl.
- 3:04Update on the sloth. Does she still hate it or is she
- 3:06OK with the sloth yet? The sloth is now her is now dad
- 3:10does like that's Dada's sloth. So like, OK, we don't like it,
- 3:14but it's not ours. OK, so it's fine because it's
- 3:17Dad Sloth. Daddy sloth yeah.
- 3:19So she went through something recently where she started doing
- 3:23there's like different developmental milestones, which
- 3:26before I had a child, I didn't know any of this.
- 3:27But one of the things that she kind of just worked through is
- 3:30the understanding of mine. She walks around and goes my dad
- 3:34or like my Bunny, my mom, mom. And so like she walks around
- 3:38like literally everything in the house is hers.
- 3:40So my car, you can't drive like my oat.
- 3:43I'm like, yeah, he Yep. And so she'll like she's
- 3:47learning that. And then now she started to
- 3:49understand like I or she'll say like Char Char's mom, mom.
- 3:52I'm like, Yep, that's me. I'm Char Char's mom, mom.
- 3:55So it's really cute to kind of see how her develop, but it's
- 3:58just so wild because like one day something will like click
- 4:01and you're like, how did you learn that?
- 4:02Yeah, I feel like. It probably happened so fast.
- 4:05Yes. And then she like picks up on
- 4:07one thing and then like we are stuck with that and she's
- 4:09actually a very particular baby. I don't know if other children
- 4:12are like this because I don't have other children, but like,
- 4:15she's very particular. And I always joke that she's
- 4:17like, definitely Rob's child. Because like, if we do something
- 4:20for the first time, the next time that we do it, we have to
- 4:23do it the same way. So like if we, you know, eat new
- 4:27food and like our spoon is on the right side of our plate,
- 4:30then the next time we eat that food, the spoon has to.
- 4:32Be on the right side of the plate.
- 4:34Interesting. OK, Almost like patterns of like
- 4:36familiarity with things. Yep.
- 4:38Or like she puts her dirty clothes like when she's shower,
- 4:41like after she, you know, like she's on shock, she goes back
- 4:44and forth between shock showers and baths.
- 4:45We're on the shower right now, but she has to put her dirty
- 4:47clothes in the same spot. OK.
- 4:50And I'm like, and this might be a little OCD but good job.
- 4:52She's doing it her way and we love that.
- 4:54Yep, she's on a Princess phase right now.
- 4:56We're like, we have to wear a Princess dress at all times.
- 4:58And like also, that's fine, that's fine.
- 5:01So we're just going through phases right now.
- 5:03Enough about me and Char though. How was your week going?
- 5:05So good. My high is that my husband works
- 5:09with this young girl and she's recently married.
- 5:12She's super sweet. She follows me on Instagram and
- 5:14she makes so many of the recipes that I share.
- 5:17And then he always sends me a picture of like the lunches that
- 5:20she brings to work because it's something that she's meal
- 5:22prepped that I have shared online.
- 5:25So today was another day that my husband sent me a picture of her
- 5:28food at work and it just like makes me so happy.
- 5:30Like she'll send me a message on like Instagram being like, I
- 5:33loved this one. We made this one tonight.
- 5:35But then he always sends me a picture of them at work and
- 5:38she's having that for lunch. And it just makes my heart so
- 5:40happy that she follows along, supports and makes the recipes.
- 5:43And even if that's the only person in the world that makes
- 5:45the recipes that I make like, it makes me really happy.
- 5:48So that's my high. So cute.
- 5:50That's so. Sweet.
- 5:51She's such a sweet girl. Like she's so sweet.
- 5:53I shouldn't call her a girl. She's a grown woman, but you
- 5:56know, she's much younger than us.
- 5:57So she's a very, very kind though.
- 5:59We are 26. Yeah, that's right.
- 6:01According to my clients, she and I are basically the same age.
- 6:04She's probably like a solid 24. That's fine.
- 6:08That's my high. What's your low?
- 6:09My low is that usually in January I run a half marathon
- 6:13and I was planning running that same half marathon that I've run
- 6:17pretty much since we moved to Arizona.
- 6:19I was planning on signing up to run it on Black Friday, which if
- 6:23you're looking at a calendar, that was quite a bit of time
- 6:25ago. And since then the prices have
- 6:28increased so much. And I have not been as dedicated
- 6:32with my running recently that I don't know that I'm going to do
- 6:35it. And I'm kind of sad about that.
- 6:36But I didn't like prioritize that and make sure that I got to
- 6:39the starting line that day, even though it's a race that I would
- 6:41run like party pace, like I wouldn't be planning for any
- 6:44type of or anything like that. But I was really disappointed in
- 6:47myself. I don't, I don't know.
- 6:48I'm at a point where I'm like, I've waited too long because
- 6:51it's this month. It's a rock'n'roll, right?
- 6:53Yeah. Do you feel?
- 6:54Like those are kind of pricey they.
- 6:56Are like even on their Black Friday sale, I was like that's a
- 6:59lot for 1/2 marathon And I get it like we have to shut down
- 7:02public streets. There's a lot that goes into
- 7:04planning a race that I'm sure I don't even understand.
- 7:06But I was like that's a lot for 1/2 marathon.
- 7:09I was like, I paid almost that much for a full marathon and so
- 7:12I didn't do it. And now I regret that because
- 7:14now it's even more expensive. Do.
- 7:16They have a 5K. Actually they might.
- 7:18I should check that. I know they don't have a full
- 7:20marathon. Like the furthest they have is
- 7:221/2. Could do a fun party pace 5K.
- 7:25That I could, yes, and it would be incredibly party pace.
- 7:28Yeah, but sometimes 5 KS are well, no, but a 5K is fun
- 7:31because I feel like people are more festive with a 5K that's.
- 7:34True. Yeah.
- 7:35You also typically don't have to be there as early to start
- 7:37depending on if they send you in waves, which is nice.
- 7:40But as of right now I am not running the race.
- 7:42I usually race because I procrastinated.
- 7:44Hello. On today's episode we have
- 7:46myself, Riley, and Lily to talk about what drives us bananas.
- 7:49First of all, happy 2026. Welcome back.
- 7:52Even though we've only been gone for a week, I can't believe
- 7:54we're in 2026. I don't know about y'all but I
- 7:57will still be writing 2025 on everything for the next like 6
- 8:00to 9 months. I'm writing like 2009.
- 8:02I like that better. I wrote 2024 the other day.
- 8:05We're getting there, yeah, a few months behind.
- 8:08We're trying. Riley, what did you see this
- 8:10week that drove you bananas? OK, this is from a friend.
- 8:14He was another dietitian, is another sports dietitian in the
- 8:16space and she, like my clients now send me what drives up
- 8:21bananas because they listen to the podcast.
- 8:23She had to share a story about one of the clients that she is
- 8:26currently working with, one of the athletes that she's working
- 8:28with who is a 16 year old soccer player who recently tore their
- 8:31ACL. They're no longer playing
- 8:33because they're rehabbing. They have gained 8 lbs and they
- 8:36went to their checkup with their physician and their physician
- 8:40recommended that they go on a GL P1 to lose the weight that they
- 8:44had gained while rehabbing their ACLA. 16 year old with a history
- 8:50of disordered eating. Holy.
- 8:52Cow. Oh my gosh.
- 8:53I am so concerned about the intervention there for one, but
- 8:58I'm also so concerned about how that made that person feel
- 9:01because 8 lbs is a normal fluctuation that happens when
- 9:04we're rehabbing an injury. My goodness.
- 9:06Like we see a couple pounds of fluctuation during different
- 9:09points in our cycle. If we're views the bathroom, if
- 9:11we have hydrated well, if we had a lot of salty food, like we can
- 9:14see changes and weight just from that, that can be several
- 9:16pounds. So 8 lbs.
- 9:18It's not a, it's not a concerning amount of weight.
- 9:21Change I'm just concerned because of what the conversation
- 9:23that was had that that physician and that athlete felt because I
- 9:27mean from our a lot of our understanding and a lot of our
- 9:29training is like you never recommend weight loss under 18
- 9:32And so now we're recommending weight loss, but we're not
- 9:34recommending it from like a dietary standpoint.
- 9:36And then also like you gained a little bit of weight because
- 9:40you're injured. I actually would rather you gain
- 9:42a couple pounds than lose weight because it shows that you're
- 9:44feeling enough to heal the injury versus under feeling
- 9:47yourself and prolonging your recovery.
- 9:49Let alone the fact that they had surgery to repair this injury
- 9:52that they could be experiencing some like inflammation that
- 9:54could also be contributing to the number change.
- 9:57And that wouldn't be something that we want to have an
- 9:59intervention of any type of weight loss regardless of the
- 10:01age of the patient. But this particular person, like
- 10:04Riley mentioned, is underage and we should not be recommending
- 10:08weight loss for pediatric patients.
- 10:10Also like you mentioned too, like there's so much variation
- 10:12here and like 8 lbs could easily be like some fluid shift and
- 10:16like a different scale. Like is it the same scale?
- 10:19Probably not. Like, there's no way.
- 10:21Like it's the same scale. You know, you think about error.
- 10:23That happens, too. Was this person, like, on
- 10:25crutches? And they were still leaning on a
- 10:27crutch when they were weighed previously and now you know what
- 10:30I mean? Like, there's so much
- 10:31variability. Yeah.
- 10:32Yeah. A brace.
- 10:33Like, my goodness. I mean, we don't know the whole
- 10:35situation like, you know, and it's easy for us to kind of like
- 10:38just hear facts and things about that.
- 10:40But I just know that that's not the only situation like that
- 10:43that's happening right now because there's there's just so
- 10:45much conversation and I feel like so much misuse a lot with
- 10:48these medications makes. Sense and like you said, we
- 10:50don't know the full picture. We're not part of that person's
- 10:52medical team. It's still concerning from the
- 10:54outside perspective. Because those conversations are
- 10:56happening, right? And like, even if like that
- 10:58athlete doesn't go through with that, like that was a
- 11:00conversation that was had. And I just remember like when I
- 11:03was 16 and I went through puberty and I gained weight, I
- 11:07was having a lot of those conversations to me and they
- 11:09were very negative and they have a lasting impact on my life.
- 11:12And if somebody had told me that, like I should use the GOP
- 11:15when I was 16 because I had gained weight and now my coaches
- 11:18were mad at me, I would have 120% taken that medication and I
- 11:21would never. Alone in that I think it's.
- 11:22Just a such a sensitive time period one.
- 11:26It's different for everyone like we just said, but you are still
- 11:30developing. So there are going to be shifts
- 11:32and things like weight. Lots of people are already
- 11:35self-conscious about those shifts.
- 11:37And so to be offered what is a medication that is going to
- 11:42induce weight loss, it breaks my heart a little.
- 11:45I'm with you on that. I think that's so sad.
- 11:47Of course, again, here I am speculating that this was a
- 11:49female, but males and females both experience puberty and both
- 11:52should experience shifts during that time.
- 11:54But I think I always view things from the female perspective
- 11:56because I am female. And so when I think about like
- 11:59that time in life, just like Lily mentioned, being very like
- 12:02delicate already, because there's a lot of things
- 12:04happening for a lot of people that's around at the time that
- 12:06we experience our first cycle. And we don't want to encourage
- 12:09like drastic weight loss during that time for a number of
- 12:12reasons, but one especially because we want normal growth
- 12:15and development and we should be educating rather than
- 12:19discouraging. Think when we think about it
- 12:21from like a society standpoint, I just feel like female growth
- 12:24and development during puberty is seen as like a negative,
- 12:27right? And then with males, it's seen
- 12:28as a positive. There's so much conversation
- 12:30about, well, when you're, you know, you go through poverty,
- 12:32you gain weight and like you're going to become a worst athlete.
- 12:35There's so much like negative stress, I think on this period
- 12:38of time and like personally speaking, right?
- 12:40Like when I played club soccer and then I transitioned to
- 12:43college soccer, it is a completely different sport.
- 12:45Like it's the same sport. But I just remember like being a
- 12:48little freshman and like the first time I went to practice or
- 12:50whatever and like an upperclassman came at me, I was
- 12:54like knocked on my butt. Because the speed and the power
- 12:57and the strength that these athletes have when they're a
- 12:59little bit older compared to where you are when you're 161718
- 13:02is completely different. And we always think that like,
- 13:06you have to be in a smaller body or you, you know, these changes
- 13:09are a bad thing, but like you have to change and you have to
- 13:11grow and you have to get stronger in order to continue to
- 13:13be successful in sport. But like, I know I'm rambling
- 13:16now. I'm just, I get so mad because
- 13:18we, we focus so much on like how growth is a problem, especially
- 13:22with female athletes. And it's not, I mean, that's.
- 13:24Really well said. Major mic drop moment.
- 13:26All right, I'm done with what drives me bananas because
- 13:28obviously it drove me bananas. So what are you guys seeing this
- 13:30week? I want to share a story that
- 13:32actually happened. I think my last bananas had to
- 13:34do with my gym, but this also happened in my gym.
- 13:37I was on the Stairmaster and there was a young man who got on
- 13:41the machine right next to me and he was on the phone.
- 13:44I couldn't hear the the other end of the conversation because
- 13:46he had on his earbuds, so I couldn't hear the other person,
- 13:48but he was talking to someone and he said, what do you mean?
- 13:52Why am I at the gym? You told me that I'm fat.
- 13:55I'm here on the stairmaster. Obviously, it's really sad to
- 13:58hear this for such a young person.
- 14:00I think this kind of like plays into what Riley just mentioned
- 14:02too, about like someone growing and developing and like hearing
- 14:05really negative comments about shifts and changes and growing.
- 14:08But especially coming off of the holiday season, we see a lot of
- 14:11people that maybe we don't interact with on a day-to-day
- 14:13basis. Like there's a chance that this
- 14:15young man could have been talking to like a family member
- 14:17that he saw over the Christmas break and now he's back at
- 14:21school or something like that. And it just made me so sad that
- 14:24that person had pushed him to a point to do something or create
- 14:27a relationship with Exercise that wasn't 1 of enjoyment, it
- 14:29was one that was driven off of somebody else's comment about
- 14:32him. Made me so sad that his
- 14:35interaction with Exercise was 1 driven by someone else's
- 14:38comments about his body. I think it also just serves as a
- 14:42good reminder in general for as we're coming off of the holiday
- 14:46season, for everyone listening, but especially those that have
- 14:50younger ears around, that any comments you make, even about
- 14:53your own body, like kids, pick that up.
- 14:56And just being aware of how you word things and things on your
- 15:01own plate and how you view yourself is drastically going to
- 15:06impact the younger ones around you and how they view.
- 15:08Themselves. Oh my gosh, Lily, thank you for
- 15:11saying that. It's insane now being a mom
- 15:13because Charlie, she is so impressionable, so
- 15:17impressionable. The other day she was doing
- 15:18something and the people on the Internet are probably going to
- 15:20cut for me. But like I don't think I'm a bad
- 15:22moms carry me. Out Mom.
- 15:24Just wait to hear the story. Charlie has an attitude, right?
- 15:28And so she was doing something where like this is what she was
- 15:31doing. Like she wasn't eating like her
- 15:33food. She wanted to eat my food, which
- 15:35is fine, right? We share every like, if you're
- 15:37gonna eat my food, I'm gonna eat your food.
- 15:38But like, I think she was eating something of mine.
- 15:40And then like, instead of eating it, she was just giving it to
- 15:42the dog, right? So like, I was like, stop being
- 15:44a butt head. Like you're being a butt head
- 15:46right now. And she goes butt head, butt
- 15:48head, butt head, butt head. And then like starts walking
- 15:50around like saying butt head. And I was like, but I can't say
- 15:52stop saying butt head because when I'm saying the word,
- 15:55because she's so impressed to like everything I say.
- 15:58So like anytime I say one thing, she like repeats it and she
- 16:00picks it up. And so I think even though we
- 16:03think like maybe kids don't have recall or they're not paying
- 16:06attention, like they're paying attention.
- 16:08And talking about yourself in a negative way, even if you're not
- 16:10talking about your child or a person in the room that is
- 16:13younger, still impacts how they view themselves.
- 16:16If you are talking negatively about yourself, that child
- 16:19interprets that talking negatively about themselves as
- 16:21something that we do and that there are things that we should
- 16:23want to change. Or if they consider themselves
- 16:25like you and you want to change, that also means they should
- 16:29change. And it is so important, like
- 16:31Lily said, to be cognizant about who is around when you are
- 16:34saying things. Well, and I think to tie it back
- 16:36into what drives you bananas, Jenna, is that clearly an
- 16:39environment which we don't know that child situation, but
- 16:43clearly an environment was made where comments like that are OK.
- 16:46And so that likely does come from the person who said it to
- 16:50them, like talking about bodies in a way that they feel like
- 16:53they can make that comment to a child.
- 16:55And it could even be a friend that had said it to him.
- 16:58But it all goes. Kids learn something from
- 17:01somewhere. Lily, I'm so glad that you said
- 17:03all of that. I hope a lot of people hear
- 17:04that. Me too, I think it needs to be
- 17:06more out there. Of a sad world we live in when
- 17:08we're so hyper fixated on our own bodies that we forget that
- 17:11there's someone else that's impressionable in the room.
- 17:13Lily, what's driving you bananas right now?
- 17:15So good old TikTok it always supplies.
- 17:18Me is our TikTok correspondent. Thank you for your good work,
- 17:22your service. After the cleanse one that I had
- 17:26a couple drives us bananas. I've limited my doom scrolling
- 17:29so trying to be better about it, but I'll still be the
- 17:32correspondent. This one came from just a
- 17:34popular Wellness influencer who frequently pops up on my feed
- 17:39and I actually have not had issues with her content before
- 17:43and I do enjoy some of her content.
- 17:45However, she posted something talking about how people don't
- 17:49need rest days and that the majority of the population does
- 17:54not exercise hard enough to need to recover.
- 17:57And I think that where she's coming from in that I don't
- 18:00agree with it at all, but I do see like where her line of logic
- 18:05was going. However, her target market are
- 18:08those girls who do need a rest day and do not need to be
- 18:11hearing that they are not working hard enough to need a
- 18:15rest day. So that drove me bananas.
- 18:17I think this has like a lot of the same tones as what you said
- 18:21about like knowing who's listening and understanding that
- 18:24what you say to them is going to have an impact.
- 18:26If your audience is primarily young women who are over
- 18:29exercising, under fuelling, like maybe encouraging them to not
- 18:32take recovery days is not what we should be doing.
- 18:35Even if you think that, you know, that's some advice that
- 18:38other people could follow, which I think is why blanket advice or
- 18:41giving advice for everyone all at once can be kind of tricky.
- 18:44A. 100%. We always talk about it because
- 18:46like, this is the more carbs podcast and we are targeting
- 18:49people who are not eating enough carbohydrates, which is a lot of
- 18:52female athletes, right? And that's why they don't have
- 18:54their their period. That's why they don't have a
- 18:55regular menstrual cycle. But this information isn't
- 18:58applicable to everybody. Right.
- 18:59We say at the beginning of every episode like it may or may not
- 19:02apply to your situation. This isn't for every single
- 19:05person who we're talking to is we're encouraging to eat more
- 19:07carbohydrates. So we're definitely not walking
- 19:09around being like, eat less carbohydrates, Don't take
- 19:11recovery days, minimize your rest.
- 19:13Like that's no, yes. Especially in the influencer
- 19:16world, you do pick a target market like you do have specific
- 19:20people you are chasing after getting their content.
- 19:23And so for this person to come didn't say that, it's just
- 19:27completely opposite of what all of her other content is.
- 19:30So you know it's going to reach the people who see the other
- 19:34content who probably shouldn't be listening to what she's
- 19:36saying. I don't say it's good that you
- 19:38saw it, but I think it's good for us to understand that.
- 19:40Like that's the messaging that young women are seeing when they
- 19:42go online. And I also think it's wonderful
- 19:44that like you have the ability to sift through that and see
- 19:47that that's something that we shouldn't be actually following.
- 19:50But not everybody has that guidance to know that like
- 19:53that's not information that was intended.
- 19:54For them, 100%, yeah. And I think that that's why we
- 19:58have a lot of girlies who get stuck in habits and having a
- 20:03hard time changing is because the media they're consuming is
- 20:06constantly telling them one thing.
- 20:08And it's because they make their algorithm, they make their feed.
- 20:12And so if it's curated to not look like what they actually
- 20:15need, it's going to be really hard for them to break out of
- 20:17that because that's what everyone else is telling them to
- 20:19do. Especially with these big
- 20:21accounts too, because what happens is you have a big
- 20:23influencer almost at like the top of the pyramid, and then the
- 20:26other influencers, because they want to be like that influencer,
- 20:30start to then share the same messaging because that's what's
- 20:33trending, that's what's popular. So then it just spreads like
- 20:35wildfire and then people are confused because it's not
- 20:40working for them, even though these influencers and their feed
- 20:43is completely covered with that message.
- 20:45That's why we do these bananas episodes.
- 20:46We gotta get it out there. Happy 2026 everybody.
- 20:49We're. So pumped and there are things
- 20:51that you saw this week, the beginning of 2026.
