- 0:00Chapter thirteen, Turgon, the Panthon the face of Carthoris of Helium, gave
- 0:08no token of the emotions that convulsed him inwardly, as he heard from the
- 0:12lips of hal Vas that Helium was at war with Dusar, and that fate
- 0:17had thrown him into the service of the enemy. That he might utilize this
- 0:22opportunity to the good of Helium scarce sufficed to outweigh the chagrin he felt that
- 0:27he was not fighting in the open at the head of his own loyal troops.
- 0:32To escape the Dusarians might prove an easy matter, and then again it
- 0:37might not, should they suspect his loyalty, and the loyalty of an impressed
- 0:42Panthon was always open to suspicion. He might not find an opportunity to elude
- 0:47their vigilance until after the termination of the war, which might occur within days,
- 0:53or again only after long and weary years of bloodshed. He recalled that
- 0:59his re recorded wars in which actual military operations had been carried on without cessation
- 1:06for five or six hundred years, and even now there were nations upon Barsoom
- 1:11with which Helium had made no peace. Within the history of man. The
- 1:15outlook was not cheering. He could not guess that within a few hours he
- 1:21would be blessing the fate that had thrown him into the service of dussar Ah.
- 1:26Exclaimed, hal vas here is my father, now cow Or vas Kor,
- 1:33here is one you will be glad to meet. A dody Panthon He
- 1:38hesitated, Turgeon interjected Carthoris, seizing upon the first appellation that occurred to him
- 1:46as he spoke, His eyes crossed quickly to the tall warrior who was entering
- 1:49the room. Where before had he seen that giant figure, that taciturn countenance
- 1:57and the livid sword cut from temple to mouth. Vas Kor repeated Carthoris mentally,
- 2:07vast Kor, where had he seen the man before? And then the
- 2:12noble spoke, and like a flash at all came back to Carthoris, the
- 2:16forward servant upon the landing stage at Ptarth, that time that he had been
- 2:21explaining the intricacies of his new compass to thuvon Din, the lone slave that
- 2:27had guarded his own hangar. That night he left upon his ill fated journey
- 2:30for Ptarth, the journey that had brought him so mysteriously to far Anthor vas
- 2:38Kor. He repeated aloud, blessed be your ancestors for this meeting. Nor
- 2:44did the Dusarian guess the wealth of meaning that lay beneath that hackneyed phrase with
- 2:49which a Barsoomian acknowledges an introduction, and blessed be yours. Turjen repeated Vaskor.
- 2:58Now came the introduction of kar Koma to vas Kor. And as Carthoris
- 3:01went through the little ceremony, there came to him the only explanation he might
- 3:06make to account for the white skin and auburn hair of the bowmen, For
- 3:09he feared that the truth might not be believed, and thus suspicion be cast
- 3:14upon them both from the beginning car Coomac, he explained, is, as
- 3:20you can see, a Thurn, he has wandered far from his ice bound
- 3:24southern temples in search of adventure. I came upon him in the pits of
- 3:29Anthor. But though I have known him so short a time, I can
- 3:32vouch for his bravery and loyalty. Since the destruction of the fabric of their
- 3:38false religion by John Carter, the majority of the Thurns had gladly accepted the
- 3:43new order of things, so that it was now no longer uncommon to see
- 3:47them mingling with the multitudes of red men in any of the great cities of
- 3:51the outer world. So vast Kor neither felt nor expressed any great astonishment.
- 3:58All during the interview, Carthoris watched catlike for some indication that Vaskort recognized in
- 4:04the battered panthan the erstwhile gorgeous Prince of Helium. But the sleepless nights,
- 4:11the long days of marching and fighting, the wounds and the dried blood had
- 4:15evidently sufficed to obliterate the last remnant of his likeness to his former self.
- 4:21And then Vaskor had seen him but twice in all his life, little wonder
- 4:27that he did not know him. During the evening, vas Kor announced that
- 4:31on the morrow they should depart north toward Dusar, picking up recruits at various
- 4:35stations along the way. In a great field behind the house, a flier
- 4:42lay a fair sized cruiser transport that would accommodate many men, yet swift and
- 4:47well armed. Also here Carthoris slept, and Karkomak too, with the other
- 4:54recruits, under guard of the regular Dusarian warriors that manned the craft. Toward
- 5:00midnight, vas Kor returned to the vessel from his son's house, repairing at
- 5:04once to his cabin. Carthoris, with one of the Dusarians, was on
- 5:10watch. It was with difficulty that the Helium might repressed a cold smile as
- 5:15the noble passed within a foot of him, within a foot of the long,
- 5:19slim heliumitic blade that swung in his harness. How easy it would have
- 5:25been, how easy to avenge the cowardly trick that had been played upon him,
- 5:30to avenge Helium and Ptarth and Thuvia. But his hand moved not toward
- 5:35the dagger's hilt. For first, vas Kor must serve a better purpose.
- 5:41He might know where Thuvia of Ptarth lay hidden now if it had truly been
- 5:45Dusarians that had spirited her away during the fight before Anthor. And then too,
- 5:50there was the instigator of the entire foul plot. He must pay the
- 5:56penalty. And who better than vas Kor could lead the Prince of Helium to
- 6:00Astok of Dusar. Faintly out of the night, there came to Carthoris's ear
- 6:05the purring of a distant motor. He scanned the heavens. Yes, there
- 6:12it was, far in the north, dimly outlined against the dark void of
- 6:16space that stretched illimitably beyond it, the faint suggestion of a flier passing unlighted
- 6:24through the Barsoomian night Carthoris, knowing not whether the craft might be friend or
- 6:30foe of Dusar, gave no sign that he had seen, but turned his
- 6:34eyes in another direction, leaving the matter to the Dusarian who stood watch with
- 6:39him. Presently, the fellow discovered the oncoming craft and sounded the low alarm,
- 6:45which brought the balance of the watch and an officer from their sleeping silks
- 6:48and furs upon the deck. Near by. The cruiser transport lay without lights,
- 6:56and resting as she was upon the ground, must have been into highly
- 7:00invisible to the oncoming flyer, which all presently recognized as a small craft.
- 7:06It soon became evident that the stranger intended making a landing, for she was
- 7:11now spiraling slowly above them, dropping lower and lower in each graceful curve.
- 7:17It is the Thuria, whispered one of the Dusarian warriors. I would know
- 7:21her in the blackness of the pits among ten thousand other craft. Right you
- 7:28are, exclaimed vas Kor, who had come on deck, And then he
- 7:31hailed Kowor Thuria. Kowor came presently from above, after a brief silence.
- 7:40Then what ship cruiser transport Kalsus vast core of Dusar good came from above?
- 7:49Is there safe landing alongside? Yes, close in to starboard. Wait,
- 7:56we will show our lights. And a moment later, the smaller craft settled
- 8:00close beside the Chalcus, and the lights of the latter were immediately distinguished.
- 8:05Once more, several figures could be seen slipping over the side of the Thuria
- 8:09and advancing toward the Chalcus. Ever suspicious, the Dusarians stood ready to receive
- 8:16the visitors as friends or foes, as closer inspection might prove them. Carthoris
- 8:22stood quite near the rail, ready to take sides with the newcomers, should
- 8:26chance have it that they were Heliumites playing a bold stroke of strategy upon the
- 8:31lone Dusarian ship. He had led like parties himself and knew that such a
- 8:35contingency was quite possible. But the face of the first man to cross the
- 8:41rail undeceived him with a shock that was not at all unpleasurable. It was
- 8:46the face of Astok, Prince of Dusar, scarce. Noticing the others upon
- 8:52the deck of the Chalxus, Astok strode forward to accept Vaskor's greeting. Then
- 8:56he summoned the noble below. The warriors and officers returned to their sleeping silks
- 9:01and furs, and once more the deck was deserted except for the Dusarian warrior
- 9:07and Turgen, the Panthon, who stood guard. The latter walked quietly to
- 9:13and fro. The former leaned across the rail, wishing for the hour that
- 9:18would bring him relief. He did not see his companion approach the lights of
- 9:22the cabin of Vaskor. He did not see him stoop with ear close pressed
- 9:26to a tiny ventilator. May the white apes take us all, cried Astok
- 9:33ruefully. If we are not in as ugly a snarl as you have ever
- 9:37seen, Nudis thinks that we have her in hiding far away from Dusar.
- 9:41He has bidden me bring her here, he paused. No man should have
- 9:46heard from his lips the thing he was trying to tell. It should have
- 9:50been forever. The secret of Nudus and Astok, for upon it rested the
- 9:56safety of a throne. With that knowledge, any man could wrest from the
- 10:01Jadak of Dusar whatever he listed. But Astok was afraid, and he wanted
- 10:07from this older man the suggestion of an alternative. He went on. I
- 10:11am to kill her, he whispered, looking fearfully around Nudas merely wishes to
- 10:16see the body, that he may know his commands have been executed. I
- 10:20am now supposed to be gone to the spot where we have her hidden,
- 10:24that I may fetch her in secrecy to Dusar. None is to know that
- 10:28she has ever been in the keeping of a Dusarian. I do not need
- 10:31to tell you what will befall Dusar should Ptarth and Helium and Cowl ever learn
- 10:37the truth. The jaws of the listener at the ventilator clicked together with a
- 10:43vicious snap. Before he had but guessed at the identity of the subject of
- 10:48this conversation. Now he knew, and they were to kill her. His
- 10:54muscular fingers clenched until the nails bit into the palms. And you wish me
- 11:00to go with you while you fetch her to do Sar Vaskor was saying,
- 11:05where is she? Astok bent close and whispered into the other's ear. The
- 11:11suggestion of a smile crossed the cruel features of Vaskor. He realized the power
- 11:18that lay within his grasp. He should be a jed at last. And
- 11:24how may I help you, my prince, asked the older man, suavely.
- 11:31I cannot kill her, said Astok, isis, I cannot do it.
- 11:35When she turns those eyes upon me, my heart becomes water. Vaskor's
- 11:41eyes narrowed, and you wish he paused, the interrogation unfinished yet complete,
- 11:52Astok nodded. You do not love her, he said, But I love
- 11:58my life. Though I am only a lesser noble, he concluded, meaningfully,
- 12:05you shall be a greater noble. A noble of the first rank,
- 12:09exclaimed Astok. I would be a Jed, said vas Kor. Bluntly.
- 12:16Astok hesitated. A Jed must die before there can be another Jed, he
- 12:20pleaded. Jeds have died before, snapped Vaskor. It would doubtless be not
- 12:28difficult for you to find a Jed. You do not love, Astok.
- 12:33There are many who do not love you already, Vaskor was commencing to presume
- 12:39upon his power over the young prince. Astok was quick to note and appreciate
- 12:45the subtle change in his lieutenant. A cunning scheme entered his weak and wicked
- 12:50brain. As you say, vas Kor, he exclaimed, you shall be
- 12:56a jed when the thing is done, and then to himself. Nor will
- 13:01it then be difficult for me to find a jed I do not love.
- 13:05When shall we return to Dusar, asked the noble at once replied Astok.
- 13:13Let us get under way. Now, there is nought to keep you here.
- 13:16I had intended sailing on the morrow, picking up such recruits as the
- 13:22various dwars of the roads might have collected for me as we returned to Dusar.
- 13:28Let the recruits wait, said Astok. Or better still, come you
- 13:33to Dussar upon the Thuria, leaving the Kalsis to follow and pick up the
- 13:37recruits. Yes, acquiesced Vaskor, that is the better plan. Come,
- 13:46I am ready, and he rose to accompany Astok to the latter's flier.
- 13:52The listener at the ventilator came to his feet slowly, like an old man.
- 13:56His face was drawn and pinched, and very white beneath the light copper
- 14:00of his skin. She was to die, and he helpless to avert the
- 14:05tragedy. He did not even know where she was imprisoned. The two men
- 14:11were ascending from the cabin to the deck. Turgen the Panthon crept close to
- 14:16the companionway, his sinuous fingers closing tightly upon the hilt of his dagger.
- 14:22Could he dispatch them both before he was overpowered? He smiled, He could
- 14:28slay an entire uton of her enemies in his present state of mind. They
- 14:33were almost abreast of him. Now Astoc was speaking, Bring a couple of
- 14:37your men along, Vaskor, He said, we are short handed upon the
- 14:41Thuria. So quickly did we depart. The Panthon's fingers dropped from the dagger's
- 14:46hilt. His quick mind had grasped here a chance for succoring Thuvia of Ptarth.
- 14:54He might be chosen as one to accompany the assassins, and once he
- 14:56had learned where the captive lay, he could dis batch Astok and Vaskor as
- 15:01well as now to kill them before he knew where Thuvia was hid, was
- 15:07simply to leave her to death at the hands of others, for sooner or
- 15:11later Nutus would learn her whereabouts, and Nutus Jeddak of Dusar could not afford
- 15:18to let her live. Turgeon put himself in the path of vas Kor,
- 15:22that he might not be overlooked. The noble aroused the men sleeping upon the
- 15:28deck, but always before him the strange Panthon, whom he had recruited that
- 15:31same day, found means for keeping himself to the fore. Vaskor turned to
- 15:37his lieutenant, giving instruction for the bringing of the Chalxus to Dusar and the
- 15:43gathering up of the recruits. Then he signed to two warriors who stood close
- 15:46behind the padwar You two accompany us to the Thuria, he said, and
- 15:52put yourselves at the disposal of her Duar. It was dark upon the deck
- 15:58of the Chalxus, so Vaskor had not a good look at the faces of
- 16:02the two he chose, but that was of no moment, for they were
- 16:06but common warriors, to assist with the ordinary duties upon a flier, and
- 16:10to fight if need be. One of the two was kar Komak, the
- 16:15bowman. The other was not Carthoris. The Heliumite was mad with disappointment.
- 16:22He snatched his dagger from his harness, But already Astok had left the deck
- 16:26of the Chalcus, and he knew that before he could overtake him, should
- 16:30he despatch Vaskor, he would be killed by the Dusarian warriors, who now
- 16:34were thick upon the deck. With either one of the two alive, Thuvia
- 16:40was in as great danger as though both lived, it must be both.
- 16:45As vas Kor descended to the ground, Carthoris boldly followed him, nor did
- 16:51any attempt to halt him, thinking doubtless that he was one of the party.
- 16:56After him came kar Komak and the Dusarian warrior who had detailed to duty
- 17:00upon the Thuria. Carthoris walked close to the left side of the ladder.
- 17:06Now they came to the dense shadow under the side of the Thuria. It
- 17:10was very dark there, so that they had to grope for the ladder.
- 17:15Krkomak preceded the Dusarian. The latter reached upward for the swinging rounds, and
- 17:19as he did so, steel fingers closed upon his windpipe, and a steel
- 17:25blade pierced the very center of his heart. Turgin, the Panthon, was
- 17:30the last to clamber over the rail of the Thuria, drawing the rope ladder
- 17:33in after him. A moment later, the flier was rising rapidly, headed
- 17:38for the north. At the rail, kar Komak turned to speak to the
- 17:45warrior who had been detailed to accompany him. His eyes went wide as they
- 17:48rested upon the face of the young man whom he had met beside the granite
- 17:52cliffs that guarred mysterious Lothar. How had he come in place of the Dusarian.
- 17:59A quick sigh, and Carkomac turned once more to find the Thuria's Duir,
- 18:03that he might report himself for duty. Behind him followed the Panthon.
- 18:08Carthoris blessed the chance that had caused Vascor to choose the bowmen of all others,
- 18:14for had it been another Dusarian, there would have been questions to answer
- 18:18as to the whereabouts of the warrior who lay so quietly in the field beyond
- 18:22the residence of hal Vas, Duar of the Southern Road, And Carthoris had
- 18:26no answer to that question other than his sword point, which alone was scarce
- 18:32adequate to convince the entire crew of the Thuria. The journey to Dusar seemed
- 18:37interminable to the impatient Carthoris, though as a matter of fact it was quickly
- 18:42accomplished. Some time before they reached their destination, they met and spoke with
- 18:48another Dusarian war flier. From it they learned that a great battle was soon
- 18:52to be fought southeast of Dusar. The combined navies of Dusar, Ptarth,
- 18:59and Coool had been intercepted in their advance toward Helium by the mighty Heliumitic Navy,
- 19:03the most formidable upon Barsoom, not alone in numbers and armament, but
- 19:08in the training and courage of its officers and warriors, and the Zidadaric proportions
- 19:14of many of its monster battleships. Not for many a day had there been
- 19:18the promise of such a battle. Four Jeddaks were in direct command of their
- 19:23own fleets, Kulan Tith of Cowol, Fuvon Din of Ptarth, and Nudus
- 19:30of Dusar upon one side, while upon the other was Tardos Moor's Jeddak of
- 19:34Helium. With the latter was John Carter, Warlord of Mars. From the
- 19:41far north, another force was moving south across the Barrier cliffs. The new
- 19:47navy of Talu, Jeddak of Okar, coming in response to the call from
- 19:51the war Lord. Upon the decks of the sullen ships of war, black
- 19:56bearded yellow men looked over eagerly toward the south. Gorgeous were they in their
- 20:00splendid cloaks of oorloc and apt fierce, formidable fighters. From the hot house
- 20:07cities of the frozen North, and from the distant South, from the Sea
- 20:11of Omean and the cliffs of Gold, from the temples of the Ferns and
- 20:15the garden of Isis. Other thousands sailed into the north at the call of
- 20:19the great Man that they had all learned to respect and respecting love. Pacing
- 20:26the flagship of this mighty fleet, second only to the navy of Helium,
- 20:32was the Ebon Zodar Jeddak of the First Born, his heart beating strong in
- 20:37anticipation of the coming moment when he should hurl his savage crews and the weight
- 20:41of his mighty ships upon the enemies of the war Lord. But would these
- 20:47allies reach the theater of war in time to be of avail to Helium,
- 20:52or would Helium need them. Carthoris, with the other members of the crew
- 20:56of the Thuria heard the gossip in the rumors. None knew of the two
- 21:02fleets, the one from the south and the other from the north, that
- 21:04were coming to support the ships of Helium, and all of Dusar were convinced
- 21:10that nothing now could save the ancient power of Helium from being wiped forever from
- 21:15the upper air of Barsoom. Carthoris, too loyal son of Helium that he
- 21:21was, felt that even his beloved navy might not be able to cope successfully
- 21:25with the combined forces of three great powers. Now, the Thuria touched the
- 21:32landing stage above the palace of Astok. Hurriedly, the Prince and Vaskor disembarked
- 21:37and entered the drop that would carry them to the lower levels of the palace.
- 21:42Close beside it was another drop that was utilized by common warriors. Carthoris
- 21:48touched Karkomac upon the arm. Come, he whispered, You are my only
- 21:52friend among a nation of enemies. Will you stand by me to the death?
- 21:59Replied Krkomac. The two approached the drop, a slave operated it.
- 22:06Where are your passes, he asked. Carthoris fumbled in his pocket pouch,
- 22:11as though in search of them. At the same time, entering the cage.
- 22:15Krkomak followed him, closing the door. The slave did not start the
- 22:19cage downward. Every second counted. They must reach the lower level as soon
- 22:25as possible after Astok and vas kor if they would know whither the two went.
- 22:30Carthoris turned suddenly upon the slave, hurling him to the opposite side of
- 22:33the cage. Bind and gag him, Karkomak, he cried. Then he
- 22:38grasped the control lever, and as the cage shot downward at sickening speed,
- 22:42the bowman grappled with the slave. Carthoris could not leave the control to assist
- 22:48his companion, for should they touch the lowest level at the speed at which
- 22:52they were going, all would be dashed to instant death. Below him,
- 22:56he could see the top of Astok's cage in the parallel shaft, and he
- 23:00reduced the speed of his to that of the other. The slave commenced to
- 23:03scream. Silence him, cried Carthoris. A moment later, a limp form
- 23:11crumpled to the floor of the cage. He is silenced, said Karkomac.
- 23:17Carthoris brought the cage to a sudden stop at one of the higher levels of
- 23:19the palace. Opening the door, he grasped the still form of the slave
- 23:25and pushed it out upon the floor. Then he banged the gate and resumed
- 23:29the downward drop. Once more he sighted the top of the cage that held
- 23:33Astok in Vaskor. An instant later it had stopped, and as he brought
- 23:37his car to a halt, he saw the two men disappear through one of
- 23:41the exits of the corridor beyond end of chapter thirteen,
