- 0:00For Christ himself has made peace between us
- 0:04Jews and you Gentiles by making us all one
- 0:08people. He has broken down the wall of hostility
- 0:11that used to separate us. By his death he ended the
- 0:16whole system of Jewish law that excluded the Gentiles.
- 0:20His purpose was to make peace between Jews and Gentiles
- 0:24by creating in himself One new person from
- 0:29the 2 groups. What is this one new man?
- 0:33What is the wall of hostility between Jews and Gentiles?
- 0:38How does Christ take that wall down?
- 0:41Listen in as we unpack the whole concept of the one
- 0:45new man. Welcome to the Daily Audio
- 0:50Torah. Today is September 23rd. Now let's continue
- 0:53our journey reading through the entire Bible in one year.
- 0:57This week we are reading from the New Living Translation for the Old
- 1:01Testament and for the New Testament.
- 1:07Deuteronomy 30:11-20.
- 1:18This command I am giving you today is not too difficult for you
- 1:22to understand, and it is not beyond your reach. It is not
- 1:26kept in heaven, so distant that you must ask, who will go up to heaven
- 1:30and bring it down so we can hear it and obey? It is not kept
- 1:34beyond the sea, so far away that you must ask, who will cross
- 1:37the sea to bring it to us so we can hear it and obey?
- 1:41No, the message is very close at hand. It is
- 1:45on your lips and in your heart so that you can obey it.
- 1:48Now listen! Today I am giving you a choice
- 1:52between life and death.
- 1:55Between Prosperity and Disaster.
- 1:58For I command you this day to love the Lord your God and to keep
- 2:02His commands, decrees, and regulations by walking in
- 2:05His ways. If you do this, you will live and multiply,
- 2:10and the Lord your God will bless you and the land you are about to
- 2:13enter and occupy. But if your heart turns away and
- 2:18you refuse to listen, And if you are drawn away
- 2:22to serve and worship other gods, then I warn you now that
- 2:26you will certainly be destroyed. You will not live a long,
- 2:29good life in the land you are crossing the Jordan to occupy.
- 2:34Today I have given you the choice between life and death,
- 2:38between blessings and curses. Now I call on heaven
- 2:42and earth to witness the choice you make. Oh, that you would
- 2:46choose life so that you and your descendants
- 2:50might live! You can make this choice by loving
- 2:54the Lord your God, obeying Him, and committing
- 2:58yourself firmly to Him. This is the key to your
- 3:02life. And if you love and obey the Lord,
- 3:05you will live long in the land the Lord swore to give
- 3:09your ancestors Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.
- 3:18Isaiah 41:17-43,
- 3:2313. When the poor and needy search for water and there is none,
- 3:27and their tongues are parched from their thirst, then I, the Lord,
- 3:31will answer them. I, the God of Israel, will never forsake
- 3:35them. I will open up rivers for them on high plateaus.
- 3:39I will give them fountains of water in the valleys. In the
- 3:43deserts they will find pools of water. Rivers fed by springs
- 3:46will flow across the dry, parched ground. I will
- 3:50plant trees— cedar, acacia,
- 3:53myrtle, olive, cypress, fir, and pine— on
- 3:57barren land. Everyone will see this miracle and understand
- 4:01that it is I, the Lord, the Holy One of Israel, who did it.
- 4:05Can your idols make such claims
- 4:09as these? Let them come and show what they can do,
- 4:12says the Lord, the King of Israel. Let them try to tell
- 4:15us what happened long ago or what the future holds. Yes,
- 4:19that's it! If you are gods, tell what will
- 4:23occur in the days ahead. Or perform a mighty miracle
- 4:27that will fill us with amazement and fear. Do something!
- 4:31Whether good or bad. But no, you are less
- 4:34than nothing and can do nothing at all. Anyone who chooses you
- 4:38becomes filthy, just like you. But I
- 4:42have stirred up a Leader from the north and east. He will come against the
- 4:45nations and call on My name, and I will give Him victory over kings and
- 4:49princes. He will trample them as a potter treads
- 4:54on clay. Who but I have told you this would happen?
- 4:57Who else predicted this, making you admit that he was right?
- 5:01No one else said a word. I was the first to tell Jerusalem,
- 5:05look, help is on the way! Not one of your idols
- 5:09told you this. Not one gave any answer when I asked.
- 5:13See, they are all foolish, worthless things.
- 5:17Your idols are all as empty as the wind.
- 5:21Look at my servant whom I strengthened. He is my chosen
- 5:24one, and I am pleased with him. I have put my Spirit
- 5:29upon him. He will reveal justice to the nations. He will
- 5:33be gentle. He will not shout or raise his voice in public.
- 5:37He will not crush those who are weak or quench the smallest hope.
- 5:42He will bring full justice to all who have been wronged.
- 5:46He will not stop until truth and righteousness
- 5:50prevail throughout the earth.
- 5:54Even distant lands beyond the sea will wait for His instructions.
- 6:00God the Lord created the heavens and stretched them out. He created
- 6:04the earth and everything in it. He gives breath and life to everyone
- 6:08in all the world, and it is He who says, I the Lord
- 6:12have called you to demonstrate My righteousness. I will guard
- 6:17and support you, for I have given you to My people as the personal
- 6:20confirmation of My covenant with them.
- 6:24And you will be a light to guide all nations to Me. You will
- 6:28open the eyes of the blind and free the captives from prison.
- 6:32You will release those who sit in dark dungeons.
- 6:36I am the Lord. That is My name. I will not
- 6:40give My glory to anyone else. I will not share My praise with carved
- 6:44idols. Everything I prophesied has come true.
- 6:47And now I will prophesy again. I will tell you the
- 6:51future before it happens. Sing a new song to
- 6:55the Lord. Sing his praises from the ends of the earth.
- 6:59Sing, all you who sail the seas, all who
- 7:03live in distant coastlands.
- 7:07Join in the chorus, you desert towns. Let the villages of
- 7:11Kedar rejoice. Let the people of Selah sing
- 7:14for joy; shout praises from the mountaintops!
- 7:17Let the coastlands glorify the Lord; let them sing His
- 7:21praise! The Lord will march forth like a mighty
- 7:24man; He will come out like a warrior full of fury.
- 7:29He will shout His thundering battle cry, and He will crush
- 7:32all His enemies. He will say, I have long been
- 7:36silent; yes, I have restrained myself.
- 7:40But now I will give full vent to my fury. I will
- 7:43gasp and pant like a woman giving birth. I will level the mountains
- 7:48and hills and bring a blight on all their greenery.
- 7:51I will turn the rivers into dry land and will dry up all the
- 7:55pools. I will lead blind Israel down a new path,
- 7:59guiding them along on an unfamiliar way. I will make
- 8:03the darkness bright before them and smooth out the road ahead of them.
- 8:07Yes, I will indeed do these things. I will not forsake
- 8:11them. But those who trust in idols, calling them their gods,
- 8:15they will be turned away in shame.
- 8:20Oh, how deaf and blind you are toward me! Why won't you
- 8:24listen? Why do you refuse to see? Who in
- 8:27all the world is as blind as my own people, my servant?
- 8:32Who is as deaf as My messengers?
- 8:35Who is as blind as My chosen people, the servants of
- 8:39the Lord? You see and understand what is right, but refuse
- 8:43to act on it. You hear, but you don't really
- 8:47listen. The Lord has magnified His Law and
- 8:51made it truly glorious.
- 8:54Through it He had planned to show the world that He is righteous.
- 8:58But what a sight His people are, for they have been robbed,
- 9:01enslaved, imprisoned, and trapped.
- 9:05They are fair game for all and have no one to protect them.
- 9:09Will not even one of you apply these lessons from the
- 9:12past and see the ruin that awaits you? Who allowed Israel to
- 9:17be robbed and hurt? Was it not the LORD? It was the
- 9:21LORD whom we sinned against, for the people would not go where
- 9:24He sent them. Nor would they obey his law.
- 9:28That is why he poured out such fury on them and
- 9:31destroyed them in battle. They were set on fire and burned,
- 9:35but they refused to understand.
- 9:39But now, O Israel, the Lord who created you says,
- 9:43do not be afraid, for I have ransomed you. I have called
- 9:47you by name. You are mine. When you go through deep waters and great trouble,
- 9:52I will be with you. When you go through rivers of difficulty,
- 9:56you will not drown. When you walk through the fire of
- 10:00oppression, you will not be burned up; the flames will
- 10:04not consume you. For I am the Lord your God,
- 10:08the Holy One of Israel, your Savior. I gave
- 10:12Egypt, Ethiopia, and Seba as a ransom for your
- 10:16freedom. Others died, that you might live. I traded their
- 10:20lives for yours because you are precious to Me. You are
- 10:24honored, and I love you. Do not be
- 10:28afraid, for I am with you. I will gather you and your children
- 10:32from east and west and from north and south.
- 10:35I will bring My sons and daughters back to the Land of Israel
- 10:39from the distant corners of the earth. All who claim
- 10:43Me as their God will come. For I have made them for my glory;
- 10:47it was I who created them.
- 10:52Bring out the people who have eyes but are blind, who have ears
- 10:56but are deaf! Gather the nations together.
- 11:00Which of their idols has ever foretold such things?
- 11:03Can any of them predict something even a single day in
- 11:07advance? Where are the witnesses of such predictions? Who can
- 11:11verify that they spoke the truth? But you are My witnesses,
- 11:15O Israel, says the Lord, and you are My servant.
- 11:19You have been chosen to know Me, believe in Me, and understand that
- 11:23I alone am God. There is no other God.
- 11:27There never has been and never will be. I am the Lord,
- 11:31and there is no other Savior. First, I predicted
- 11:35your deliverance. I declared what I would do. And then I
- 11:39did it. I saved you. No foreign god has ever done this
- 11:43before. You are witnesses that I am the only God,
- 11:47says the Lord. From eternity to eternity,
- 11:51I am God. No one can oppose what I do.
- 11:55No one can reverse my actions.
- 12:01Ephesians 2: 1-22.
- 12:06Once you believers were dead, doomed forever because of your many
- 12:10sins. You used to live just like the rest of the world, full of sin,
- 12:14obeying Satan, the mighty prince of the power of the air.
- 12:18He is the spirit at work in the hearts of those who refuse to
- 12:21obey God. All of us used to live that way,
- 12:24following the passions and desires of our evil nature.
- 12:28We were born with evil nature, and we were
- 12:32under God's anger just like everyone else. But God is
- 12:36so rich in mercy, and beloved, He loved us so
- 12:40very much that even while we were dead because
- 12:44of our sins, He gave us life when He raised
- 12:48Christ from the dead. It is only by God's special favor
- 12:52that you have been saved, for He raised us from
- 12:56the dead along with Christ and we are seated with Him in the
- 13:00heavenly realms, all because we are one with
- 13:04Christ Jesus.
- 13:08And so God can always point to us as
- 13:11examples of the incredible wealth of His favor and
- 13:15kindness toward us, as shown in all He has
- 13:19done for us through Christ Jesus.
- 13:23God saved you by His special favor when you
- 13:27believed. And you can't take credit for this. It is a
- 13:31gift from God. Salvation is not a
- 13:35reward for the good things we have done, so none of us
- 13:38can boast about it. For we are God's masterpiece.
- 13:43He has created us anew in
- 13:47Christ Jesus so that we can do the good things
- 13:50He planned for us long Don't
- 13:54forget that you Gentiles used to be outsiders by birth.
- 13:58You were called the uncircumcised ones by the Jews who were proud
- 14:02of their circumcision, even though it affected
- 14:06only their bodies and not their hearts. In those days,
- 14:10you were living apart from Christ. You were excluded from God's
- 14:14people Israel, and you did not know the promises God
- 14:19had made to them. You lived in this world without God and without
- 14:23hope, but now you belong to Christ.
- 14:27Though you were once far away from God, now you have been brought near
- 14:32to Him because of the blood of Christ.
- 14:36For Christ Himself has made peace between us Jews and
- 14:41you Gentiles by making us all one in
- 14:45people. He has broken down the wall of hostility
- 14:50that used to separate us. By his death, he ended the
- 14:53whole system of Jewish law that excluded
- 14:58Gentiles. His purpose was to make peace
- 15:02between Jews and Gentiles by creating in himself one
- 15:07new person from the two groups.
- 15:12Together as one body, Christ reconciled both
- 15:16groups to God by means of his death, and our
- 15:19hostility toward each other was put to death.
- 15:24He has brought this good news of peace to you Gentiles
- 15:27who were far away from him and to us Jews who were near.
- 15:31Now all of us, both Jews and Gentiles, may come to
- 15:35the Father through the same Holy Spirit because of what Christ
- 15:39has done for us. So now you Gentiles
- 15:43are no longer strangers and foreigners. You are citizens
- 15:47along with all of God's holy people.
- 15:50You are members of God's family. We are His
- 15:54house, built on the foundation of the apostles and
- 15:59the prophets, and the cornerstone is Christ Jesus Himself.
- 16:03We who believe are carefully joined together,
- 16:06becoming a holy temple for the Lord. Through him you
- 16:11Gentiles are also joined together as part of this dwelling
- 16:14where God lives by his Spirit.
- 16:22Psalm 67:1-7.
- 16:29May God be merciful and bless us; may his face shine
- 16:33with favor upon us. May your ways be known
- 16:37throughout the earth, your saving power among people everywhere.
- 16:41May the nations praise you, O God; yes, may all
- 16:45the nations praise you. How glad the nations will be,
- 16:49singing for joy, because you govern them with justice
- 16:52and direct the actions of the whole world. May the
- 16:56nations praise You, O God! Yes, may all the
- 17:00nations praise You! Then the earth will yield its
- 17:04harvest, and our God will richly bless
- 17:08us. Yes, God will bless us, and people all
- 17:12over the world will fear Him.
- 17:17Proverbs 23:29-35. Who has
- 17:21anguish? Who has sorrow? Who is always
- 17:24fighting? Who is always complaining?
- 17:27Who has unnecessary bruises? Who has bloodshot
- 17:32eyes? It is the one who spends long hours in the taverns
- 17:35trying out new drinks. Don't let the sparkle and smooth taste
- 17:40of wine deceive you, for in the end it bites like a poisonous serpent;
- 17:44it stings like a viper. You will see hallucinations and
- 17:49you will say crazy things. You will stagger like a sailor tossed at
- 17:53sea clinging to a swaying mast, and you will say,
- 17:56they hit me, but I didn't feel it. I didn't even know it when they
- 18:01beat me up. When will I wake up so I can have another drink?
- 18:08I want to speak to you today from our reading from Ephesians chapter 2,
- 18:12and we're going to zoom in on Ephesians 2:14-15,
- 18:18and we have a thought, a very important concept
- 18:22about the one new man.
- 18:25So verse 14 reads, for Christ Himself has made peace between
- 18:29us Jews and you Gentiles by
- 18:33making us all one people. He has
- 18:37broken down the wall of hostility that used
- 18:40to separate us. By His death, He ended the whole system
- 18:45of Jewish law that excluded
- 18:48the Gentiles. His purpose was to make peace between
- 18:52Jews and Gentiles by creating in Himself one
- 18:57new person from the 2 groups.
- 19:01Together as one body, Christ reconciled both groups
- 19:05to God by means of His death, and our hostility toward each other
- 19:09was put to death.
- 19:13So I found a YouTube explanation
- 19:18of the one new man from Ephesians chapter 2,
- 19:22verses 14 and 15 that I thought was really excellent,
- 19:26and I'm going to share that with you here in just a moment. It's from
- 19:30Zetzi Torah Ministries, so I'll go ahead and
- 19:34let you give it a listen, and hopefully this will bring
- 19:38some clarity for you.
- 19:57Welcome to A Minute or Two with the Word. I am your host,
- 20:00Torah Teacher Ariel, where every few days we take a look at a relevant passage
- 20:04of Scripture that I find very fascinating and important for us to consider
- 20:08us Jews and Gentiles in Messiah. Let's talk about Ephesians 2:14-15.
- 20:13Let's read the ESV English and then the SBL GNT Greek.
- 20:17For he himself is our peace, who has made us both
- 20:21one and has broken down in his flesh the dividing wall
- 20:24of hostility by abolishing the law of commandments expressed in ordinances,
- 20:29that he might create in himself one new man in place
- 20:33of to so making peace. I will start with Ephesians
- 20:372:14 to build context and then work towards Ephesians 2:15.
- 20:41It is commonly taught that the dividing wall of hostility being broken down was
- 20:45the Law of Moses, the Torah. In my study and teaching
- 20:48of the Bible, I firmly maintain that the barrier being destroyed
- 20:52cannot possibly be the Torah because the Torah never commanded a
- 20:56dividing wall of hostility between Jews and Gentiles.
- 21:00The dividing wall of hostility in Ephesians 2:14 was the vile
- 21:04man-made social class caste system set in place by oral
- 21:08Torah and Jewish leaders seeking to keep a social and
- 21:12religious difference between Jews and Gentiles. Religious Jewish pride and Gentile
- 21:17resentment of that pride fostered the shared social hostility.
- 21:21Jesus came to establish once and for all that
- 21:24Jews and Gentiles in him constituted a spiritual Israel
- 21:28within national Israel. Israel. Read Romans 9:6-8,
- 21:329:23-24, and Romans 11:1-7.
- 21:36The remnant of Israel is this spiritual Israel within national
- 21:40Israel. In the remnant, Jews and Gentile believers were
- 21:43equal, something Paul states later in Ephesians 2:18-22.
- 21:49Using the whole context of Ephesians 2 to bolster my argument,
- 21:52I would paraphrase Ephesians 2:14-15 thusly:
- 21:56For he himself is our peace, who has made
- 21:59both Jews and Gentiles in Messiah into fellow
- 22:03citizens with one another, and both into members of Israel,
- 22:07and has broken down in his flesh the dividing wall of hostility
- 22:11created by the class-caste system, by abolishing the laws of
- 22:14oral commandments found in man-made dogma, that he might create in
- 22:18himself one new redeemed humanity in
- 22:22place of the fractured and separated too, so making
- 22:26peace.
- 22:51Yeah, yeah.
- 23:36The Aaronic Blessing from Numbers chapter 6,
- 23:3924 to 26.
- 23:43Adonai bless you and keep you. Adonai make his
- 23:47face to shine upon you and be gracious
- 23:50to you. Adonai lift up his countenance upon you
- 23:55and give you peace.
