Transcript
- 0:01Speaker 1: All right, folks, welcome back to another episode of the
- 0:04Speaker 1: Wired to Hunt podcast, and we are back for another
- 0:08Speaker 1: season of our rut Fresh radio mini series. This is
- 0:12Speaker 1: like season eight, maybe it's been a long time running.
- 0:16Speaker 1: It's a fan favor every season. Come the fall, we
- 0:21Speaker 1: do this extra drop, which if you are not familiar,
- 0:24Speaker 1: I want to give you a very fast rundown of
- 0:26Speaker 1: what this show will entail this week and every week
- 0:29Speaker 1: from now on through the rest of the season. What
- 0:31Speaker 1: we're doing is we are chatting with a handful of
- 0:34Speaker 1: different deer hunters from across the country every single week
- 0:38Speaker 1: to find out what they've been seeing in the woods,
- 0:41Speaker 1: what kinds of behavior they have been noticing, how recent
- 0:45Speaker 1: weather factors or conditions or atmospheric conditions, whatever be, how
- 0:49Speaker 1: that stuff's impacting deer movement, how the changing habitat out
- 0:53Speaker 1: there is impacting deer movement, deer behavior and hunting strategy,
- 0:57Speaker 1: and how all of this can help you he was
- 1:00Speaker 1: a hunter in your coming hunts over the next three,
- 1:03Speaker 1: four or five, six, seven days. That's what we do,
- 1:06Speaker 1: quick hits with people all across the country to get
- 1:08Speaker 1: the most recent relevant information to help you as a
- 1:11Speaker 1: deer hunter. This week. So that's what the show is.
- 1:15Speaker 1: And it's been like that for like I said, seven
- 1:16Speaker 1: or eight or nine years now. Now what is different
- 1:19Speaker 1: this year is that we have a new captain for
- 1:23Speaker 1: the rot Fresh ship. This year, my good buddy mister
- 1:27Speaker 1: j Koefer is taking the reins from our palace Tyler
- 1:30Speaker 1: and Casey, who've ran the show for the last two
- 1:32Speaker 1: or three years. Jake just ran an awesome mini series
- 1:36Speaker 1: called the Back forty Podcast, which hopefully you heard, that
- 1:39Speaker 1: is wrapping up and now rutfresh is kicking off. So Jake,
- 1:44Speaker 1: great work with a Back forty and welcome to rot
- 1:47Speaker 1: Fresh Radio.
- 1:48Speaker 2: Hey, it's great to be here, and it's gonna be
- 1:51Speaker 2: an exciting fall and it's gonna be a roller coaster.
- 1:54Speaker 2: There's gonna be things that we can predict and there's
- 1:56Speaker 2: gonna be things we can't predict, and it's gonna be
- 1:58Speaker 2: great to get and idea what's going on across the country.
- 2:01Speaker 2: And I would say this too, key weather fronts. You
- 2:05Speaker 2: can listen to a guy that's maybe further west and
- 2:07Speaker 2: what was he seeing just a couple of days ago,
- 2:08Speaker 2: and how can it apply to your neck of the
- 2:10Speaker 2: woods or north to south.
- 2:12Speaker 3: So really excited for it.
- 2:14Speaker 1: Yeah, and so you've heard this episode, You've heard this
- 2:18Speaker 1: show as a listener, You've tuned in as a listener
- 2:20Speaker 1: over the year, so you know what it's all about.
- 2:22Speaker 1: But you've never been in the captain's seat having to
- 2:25Speaker 1: find these people, talk to these people, extract useful information
- 2:29Speaker 1: from them. How are you feeling about this new responsibility
- 2:32Speaker 1: that you bear, having to be the conduit for tens
- 2:36Speaker 1: of thousands of people to get the information they need
- 2:39Speaker 1: this week to have success in the field.
- 2:40Speaker 2: Do you feel that pressure maybe a little bit now.
- 2:44Speaker 2: I mean, I think it's gonna be a lot of fun.
- 2:46Speaker 2: It's going to be great to hear the success of
- 2:48Speaker 2: you know, people having throughout the season, or maybe the
- 2:51Speaker 2: struggles or just the anticipation of the season builds up.
- 2:54Speaker 2: I mean, I feel like it's going to be contagious
- 2:56Speaker 2: and I'm looking forward to it. I mean, we have
- 2:59Speaker 2: some really good guests here for this week, and we
- 3:00Speaker 2: actually have one if a guy that shot a really wide,
- 3:03Speaker 2: awesome buck and so as a as a deer hunting fan,
- 3:06Speaker 2: I'm excited to hear the story firsthand and see what
- 3:09Speaker 2: he keyed it on. And so it's great to be here,
- 3:11Speaker 2: grateful for the opportunity, and it's gonna be a lot
- 3:14Speaker 2: of fun.
- 3:15Speaker 1: So is there anything new that we should be watching
- 3:19Speaker 1: for this year? With you running the show? And you know,
- 3:22Speaker 1: I'm here this episode, but I'm I probably won't be
- 3:24Speaker 1: around for most of the episodes. You'll be running the
- 3:26Speaker 1: whole show from here on out. I'll drop in as
- 3:28Speaker 1: a guest here and there. But do you have any
- 3:31Speaker 1: changes you're wanting to make? Is there anything new coming
- 3:34Speaker 1: down the pipeline that we should be watching.
- 3:35Speaker 2: For The plane is gonna get built in the air,
- 3:39Speaker 2: so as it sits expect some really good information.
- 3:45Speaker 3: You know why.
- 3:45Speaker 2: It's been a favorite in the past. And I feel
- 3:48Speaker 2: like once I get my sleeves up and maybe ankle
- 3:50Speaker 2: deep in some mud, there's very possible there's gonna be
- 3:54Speaker 2: some audibles or some different approaches here. So that's that's
- 3:57Speaker 2: my foreshadowing without an idea of what the foreshadowy really is,
- 4:01Speaker 2: and for there that's fair.
- 4:04Speaker 3: Now.
- 4:04Speaker 1: One thing, though, am I right? Are you still planning
- 4:07Speaker 1: on having video for all of these interviews? This is
- 4:09Speaker 1: that right?
- 4:09Speaker 4: Yeah?
- 4:10Speaker 3: All of them are still gonna be video.
- 4:11Speaker 2: There'll be some challenges, yeah, there'll be some challenges throughout here,
- 4:14Speaker 2: so that is one of the biggest changes. And I
- 4:17Speaker 2: feel sometimes it's crazy just how many people watch podcasts
- 4:20Speaker 2: on YouTube now. And I think that audio is great.
- 4:24Speaker 2: But to see the excitement or maybe see the dark
- 4:26Speaker 2: circles under my eyes or guest eyes. They've been out,
- 4:31Speaker 2: you know, in the in the woods chasing deer for
- 4:33Speaker 2: three weeks, four weeks or a week slid, it's going
- 4:35Speaker 2: to be fun to look at my face. I guess
- 4:39Speaker 2: week one here in September, September, and then by the
- 4:42Speaker 2: end of December, see what I look like.
- 4:44Speaker 1: Well, you know what you should try to do. Here's
- 4:46Speaker 1: a little stretch goal for you. If we could somehow
- 4:50Speaker 1: get some of our successful guests, you know who just
- 4:53Speaker 1: kill the deer. We got to get some of these
- 4:54Speaker 1: guys to like take us out to the truck or
- 4:57Speaker 1: to the barn, or to wherever they've got there. Did
- 5:00Speaker 1: I want to see some of these deer in real life.
- 5:01Speaker 1: That'd be pretty fun, a great story. So if that
- 5:05Speaker 1: works for anyone, try to get that. I'd love to
- 5:08Speaker 1: see some video of these deer that we're getting the
- 5:11Speaker 1: recent stories and recent information from or another good one.
- 5:16Speaker 1: Maybe we can get someone to report to us from
- 5:19Speaker 1: a tree. I don't think that's ever happened before. We've
- 5:21Speaker 1: never hit anyone calling before from a hunt where they
- 5:25Speaker 1: can actually show us what things are looking like right now.
- 5:28Speaker 3: I don't know.
- 5:28Speaker 1: Maybe that won't work because they'll be whispering on a podcast,
- 5:31Speaker 1: which doesn't sound ideal.
- 5:32Speaker 3: But brainstorming here I'm supposed to do.
- 5:35Speaker 2: I might be hosting from the tree at one point,
- 5:38Speaker 2: so we'll see what happens.
- 5:42Speaker 1: I love it, so okay, so that's the game plan.
- 5:45Speaker 1: That's what we have to look forward to. What else
- 5:48Speaker 1: do you want to cover here before we get to
- 5:50Speaker 1: the interviews?
- 5:51Speaker 3: I think that's that's the premise. I'm excited.
- 5:53Speaker 2: Hopefully everyone is just chomping at the bit for this
- 5:57Speaker 2: upcoming season. I know some folks are still waiting for
- 5:59Speaker 2: that October one date to hit the calendar, but there's
- 6:02Speaker 2: people that are up and going and we've been talking
- 6:04Speaker 2: with them, and uh, that's pretty much all the housekeeping
- 6:07Speaker 2: I can think of for the time being. And I
- 6:09Speaker 2: know you recently just got back from a trip and
- 6:11Speaker 2: I haven't I don't know how it went, and so
- 6:14Speaker 2: I'm really eager to hear your Western Adventures slash Fishing
- 6:18Speaker 2: trip too like Hunting and Fishing trip.
- 6:20Speaker 1: Yeah, the cast and the last we're going to be
- 6:22Speaker 1: doing a full podcast on it, so I won't give
- 6:24Speaker 1: away too much, but I can tell you that probably
- 6:30Speaker 1: one of the big things that we experienced on this
- 6:32Speaker 1: trip is something that a lot of folks are going
- 6:33Speaker 1: to be experiencing over the next week as they're listening
- 6:36Speaker 1: to this, which is still a lot of these hot
- 6:38Speaker 1: and dry conditions. And I'm really curious to hear from
- 6:41Speaker 1: the other guests that you have on the show today
- 6:43Speaker 1: about how they are dealing with this weather, don't I
- 6:47Speaker 1: don't think this is unique to me. I think that
- 6:49Speaker 1: this has been a very dry, hot, you know, late
- 6:52Speaker 1: summer and early fall for a lot of people, and
- 6:54Speaker 1: I gotta believe that's going to be impacting deer and
- 6:57Speaker 1: deer hunting strategies. I'm I'm, you know, seeing this with
- 7:01Speaker 1: my food plots. I've never had a worse food plot year.
- 7:03Speaker 1: I don't know if you had the same problem, but
- 7:05Speaker 1: it has been horrible by us. So I'm just very
- 7:09Speaker 1: curious how is that going to impact people's food plots
- 7:11Speaker 1: and they're hunting strategies around green plots and stuff like that.
- 7:14Speaker 1: How is this dry weather going to impact people with
- 7:18Speaker 1: mass crops this year? Are the mass crops going to
- 7:20Speaker 1: be impacted by that? What about water sources? Are the
- 7:23Speaker 1: little isolated water holes and maybe people usually depend on
- 7:27Speaker 1: in the early season, are those going to be dried
- 7:29Speaker 1: up and not you know, available for us to hunt over?
- 7:33Speaker 1: What about EHD? I've been hearing more and more reports
- 7:35Speaker 1: of EHD in certain parts of the country. Is that
- 7:38Speaker 1: going to be popping up and really impacting people's seasons?
- 7:42Speaker 1: All of that is very much on my mind right now,
- 7:44Speaker 1: based on what I've seen and heard. I don't know
- 7:47Speaker 1: if you've heard any of this with your interviews so far,
- 7:49Speaker 1: but I'm curious.
- 7:51Speaker 2: Yeah, that's that's already been a common occurrence. EHD has
- 7:54Speaker 2: been brought up the just the level of dryness from
- 7:57Speaker 2: failed food plots, potentially acorn dropping maybe a little bit earlier.
- 8:03Speaker 2: In some parts of the country, crops got in late,
- 8:05Speaker 2: so they say that crop's going to be out, you
- 8:06Speaker 2: know a little bit later this fall, and obviously that
- 8:08Speaker 2: can change things.
- 8:09Speaker 1: And then.
- 8:11Speaker 2: For some of it too, it's so dry that some
- 8:13Speaker 2: of the crops are going to come out early, So
- 8:15Speaker 2: it's it feels like we're getting a little shaky start
- 8:19Speaker 2: to the season, like the stage is not set as
- 8:21Speaker 2: of right now to be.
- 8:22Speaker 3: This amazing thing. We had a really wet July.
- 8:25Speaker 2: You know, It's like there was a lot of things
- 8:26Speaker 2: that we're setting up a really exciting year, and now
- 8:30Speaker 2: mother nature seems to be even the playing field as
- 8:32Speaker 2: we get closer to a lot of these season openers.
- 8:35Speaker 1: Yeah, I'm I hate I feel like many seasons we're
- 8:40Speaker 1: kicking it off with a lot of excitement, and for
- 8:42Speaker 1: some reason, I'm kicking off this season with like some apprehension. Yeah,
- 8:47Speaker 1: because of some of those things we just talked about.
- 8:48Speaker 1: So I just don't know. I'm a little bit nervous.
- 8:51Speaker 1: I'm feeling nerves from people right now given some of that,
- 8:54Speaker 1: especially the EHD thing, I think, yeah, it's getting that's
- 8:57Speaker 1: getting scary for a lot of folks.
- 8:58Speaker 2: So I actually I call. I called my local game
- 9:01Speaker 2: boarden yesterday just to see have you heard any rumblings
- 9:03Speaker 2: of a BHD in this area?
- 9:05Speaker 3: And he said no, not at this time.
- 9:06Speaker 2: I talked to not in regard to refresh, but just
- 9:09Speaker 2: talk to some folks where not you know, southern Ohio
- 9:13Speaker 2: places outside of there that are experiencing them some EHD
- 9:15Speaker 2: or people getting nervous that deer are disappearing. And then
- 9:19Speaker 2: you know, we did that podcast on the back forty
- 9:21Speaker 2: about failed food plots and I had I had bragged
- 9:24Speaker 2: that I typically had don't have failed food plots. I
- 9:26Speaker 2: do have a failed food plot here where I live.
- 9:28Speaker 2: And I went out there last week and I said,
- 9:29Speaker 2: why is there no germination? But on some of the
- 9:32Speaker 2: other ones, they're they're coming up. Okay, But man, we
- 9:34Speaker 2: need we need some rite.
- 9:35Speaker 1: We need rain so bad, so bad. Well, I'll be
- 9:39Speaker 1: doing rain dances over here. I hope you'll be doing
- 9:41Speaker 1: the same. And maybe between all of us here, uh
- 9:44Speaker 1: listening to the Wired hunt podcast and deer hunters all
- 9:47Speaker 1: over the country, of all of our rain dances are
- 9:49Speaker 1: done at the right times, enough times, maybe we'll finally
- 9:53Speaker 1: get some of that pre sip that we so desperately need. So, uh, Jake,
- 9:57Speaker 1: who who are we hearing from today? Who are we
- 10:00Speaker 1: hearing from? Where are they from? What's coming up next?
- 10:03Speaker 3: We have Cameron Dirt.
- 10:04Speaker 2: He had success in North Dakota earlier this month, and
- 10:07Speaker 2: he's gonna be You had to listen on how excited
- 10:10Speaker 2: he is about the Ohio opener.
- 10:12Speaker 3: We have Joe Cater from Missouri.
- 10:14Speaker 2: Their season opened up September fifteenth, and his approach and
- 10:18Speaker 2: what he's keen in on. He's had success in the
- 10:20Speaker 2: early season when when conditions are right, and it doesn't
- 10:23Speaker 2: sound like he's as bullish as it sits right here now.
- 10:26Speaker 2: And then we have our gentleman from Wisconsin who killed
- 10:30Speaker 2: a beautiful deer is and his name is Mitch Stam
- 10:33Speaker 2: and the Deer Society posted recently it's a very very
- 10:36Speaker 2: impressive frame deer and he shot that on the first
- 10:38Speaker 2: sit of the season. So we're gonna hear how all
- 10:41Speaker 2: that came together, and it's gonna be a great kickoff
- 10:44Speaker 2: to refresh and I hope everyone tunes in every single
- 10:46Speaker 2: week because it's gonna get it's gonna get more exciting.
- 10:48Speaker 2: We're gonna things are gonna fall into our lap and
- 10:51Speaker 2: there's gonna be some positive bounces along the way.
- 10:53Speaker 3: And I'm very very excited. So we have some great guests.
- 10:56Speaker 1: Awesome, well, Jake, thank you for taking my baby and
- 11:00Speaker 1: stewarding it into this next phase of its life. I'm
- 11:04Speaker 1: excited for the Ja Koper era of Retfresh Radio, and
- 11:09Speaker 1: let's get to those interviews.
- 11:11Speaker 3: Thanks, Let's do it.
- 11:17Speaker 1: Real quick.
- 11:17Speaker 2: Before we get into the episode with the guests, I
- 11:19Speaker 2: want to let you know that Roughresh is brought to
- 11:21Speaker 2: you by land dot com, the leading online real estate
- 11:24Speaker 2: marketplace to find your perfect rural, recreational, agricultural, or hunting
- 11:28Speaker 2: properties here in the US. All right, we got Cameron
- 11:32Speaker 2: Der on the line. He recently tagged a buck in
- 11:35Speaker 2: North Dakota. He's back home in Ohio and your season
- 11:38Speaker 2: is opening up this weekend. But you kicked off the season.
- 11:42Speaker 2: How everyone dreams with a buck tagged out on an
- 11:46Speaker 2: out of state trip.
- 11:47Speaker 3: Where were you and what were you doing?
- 11:50Speaker 5: I was in Minnesota. I'm just kidding. I was in
- 11:53Speaker 5: North Dakota. Went out there for the archery opener.
- 11:56Speaker 6: This year.
- 11:56Speaker 5: It opened earlier than it's ever opened. August twenty ninth
- 12:01Speaker 5: was the opener, so we were like, man, we could
- 12:04Speaker 5: really hone in on a deer doing something consistency, with
- 12:09Speaker 5: some consistency, And I actually took a trip out there
- 12:11Speaker 5: in July at the end of July to hang cameras
- 12:14Speaker 5: and kind of figure out what the deer we're doing.
- 12:18Speaker 5: The way it goes is when you take those trips
- 12:22Speaker 5: out early and think you have something pinned down, you
- 12:24Speaker 5: get out there to hunt at that time deer shedding
- 12:27Speaker 5: and they start doing crazy things and you lose them.
- 12:30Speaker 5: So it was a game of game of glass and
- 12:33Speaker 5: a game of time, and I was able to connect.
- 12:37Speaker 2: What was one or two key things that put you
- 12:40Speaker 2: an opportunity but to be you know, sub twenty yards
- 12:43Speaker 2: with with a buck that you were happy to shoot,
- 12:45Speaker 2: you know, target buck.
- 12:46Speaker 5: So we've been going out there for five years and
- 12:49Speaker 5: I learned a lot in those progressions. But out in
- 12:53Speaker 5: those scenarios glasses, the time behind glass and really figuring
- 12:59Speaker 5: out what deer are doing. It's so open that it
- 13:02Speaker 5: may seem like a deer doesn't have a trail or
- 13:04Speaker 5: a pattern or something that you can hone in on.
- 13:07Speaker 5: But if you spend enough time behind the glass watching them,
- 13:10Speaker 5: there are areas where they're vulnerable. There will be some
- 13:14Speaker 5: type of terrain pinch or some type of something that
- 13:17Speaker 5: you can take advantage if you spend enough time behind glass.
- 13:20Speaker 5: If I watch this deer do something one time and
- 13:23Speaker 5: I was like, okay, well I'm gonna go kill him,
- 13:26Speaker 5: I wouldn't get it done and I learned that over
- 13:28Speaker 5: the time of being out there. So watch them do
- 13:31Speaker 5: the same thing on camera three times, physically watched them
- 13:34Speaker 5: with glass twice, and then I made my strategic move.
- 13:39Speaker 2: You come from a tree, come from the ground. What
- 13:41Speaker 2: is your strategy If it's really open, I have to
- 13:44Speaker 2: imagine traditional Midwest. I'm going to be getting a tree
- 13:48Speaker 2: or wise off twenty feet up. It's probably not in
- 13:50Speaker 2: your playbook.
- 13:51Speaker 5: No, No, this area, it doesn't have this particular farm
- 13:56Speaker 5: that we were on, there are no tree. There's not
- 13:57Speaker 5: a tree on the farms, a fourteen hundred acre piece
- 14:01Speaker 5: that does not have a single tree on it. There's
- 14:05Speaker 5: some shrubby brush things that would be like head high
- 14:09Speaker 5: that if they were in the right position, you could
- 14:11Speaker 5: make a hide out of it. But in this particular area,
- 14:14Speaker 5: I had a standing corn field behind me, standing beans
- 14:19Speaker 5: in front of me, and I had a draw that
- 14:21Speaker 5: was going down into a lake below me. In between
- 14:25Speaker 5: the beans and the corn there's a bunch of sage.
- 14:27Speaker 5: So the sage is like if you get into it,
- 14:29Speaker 5: it's like head high strategy we've used in the past
- 14:33Speaker 5: is taken like a t post or a fence post
- 14:35Speaker 5: or something in there with us and like zip tying
- 14:38Speaker 5: some of that sage to it, just to give you
- 14:41Speaker 5: some sort of structure in front of you. And then
- 14:43Speaker 5: the standing corn was kind of like my backdrop and
- 14:45Speaker 5: some sage. So it's a fantastic hide. It's worked for
- 14:50Speaker 5: me twice in the same exact little sage pinch. When
- 14:54Speaker 5: you get that crop rotation of corn and beans, you
- 14:57Speaker 5: have that edge out there, dynamite and below me was
- 15:02Speaker 5: a cattail slew. If you have cattails, standing corn, standing
- 15:07Speaker 5: beans in the first week of September in Dakota State,
- 15:11Speaker 5: you're in a pretty good situation.
- 15:13Speaker 2: What about you know we're near the end of the
- 15:16Speaker 2: month of September. Would you say that same strategy and
- 15:19Speaker 2: advice would ring true if someone had a tag in
- 15:21Speaker 2: their pocket and they're in the Dakota's or they're in
- 15:23Speaker 2: a plain state, you know, ready to go this weekend.
- 15:28Speaker 5: If there are trees in the area, like oak trees
- 15:30Speaker 5: and stuff, oaks are dropping and deer are are going
- 15:34Speaker 5: to prefer the oaks. But in those ag areas where
- 15:37Speaker 5: the beans are still green. The Dakota's were wet this year,
- 15:40Speaker 5: so they got a really good stand crop stand. If
- 15:44Speaker 5: the beans are still green. Yeah, that's that's exactly what
- 15:47Speaker 5: I would still be doing it. But if you are
- 15:49Speaker 5: in other areas that are going to have oaks, oaks
- 15:53Speaker 5: are dropping and bucks are switching for sure.
- 15:57Speaker 2: Okay, so now Ohio is going to be opening this weekend,
- 16:03Speaker 2: what's your what's your strategy? You know you already have
- 16:05Speaker 2: one down right, So what is your strategy an outlook
- 16:10Speaker 2: over the next seven days for Ohio's opener.
- 16:12Speaker 3: A lot of people are excited.
- 16:13Speaker 2: I'm sure there' given me a lot of people that
- 16:15Speaker 2: are gonna go out there and scratch that edge they've
- 16:16Speaker 2: been waiting a long time to hunt for the first time.
- 16:19Speaker 3: And their respective home state.
- 16:21Speaker 2: If it's Ohio, what would you say or what are
- 16:24Speaker 2: you paying attention to as the season is about to open.
- 16:28Speaker 5: Temperatures and oaks for this weekend? But depending on what
- 16:33Speaker 5: part of Ohio you're in right now, I severely fear
- 16:37Speaker 5: for you. If you're in the southeast portion, I don't
- 16:40Speaker 5: know what you do down there, I don't I don't
- 16:42Speaker 5: know what you plan to do. Do you even hunt
- 16:46Speaker 5: this year?
- 16:46Speaker 4: I don't know?
- 16:48Speaker 3: Is that Have you heard it being that severe?
- 16:50Speaker 5: Yeah? There was a report It's like on Facebook and
- 16:54Speaker 5: I didn't validate it, but they said they were over
- 16:56Speaker 5: seven thousand deer reported reported in ten Yes, that's not
- 17:02Speaker 5: what hasn't been reported or hasn't been found. So it's
- 17:06Speaker 5: really ugly in the southeast portion right now. So you
- 17:09Speaker 5: probably are gonna get yourself in a situation where you're
- 17:12Speaker 5: gonna travel or go somewhere new. And if you're in
- 17:16Speaker 5: that boat right now, I would be paying attention to oaks.
- 17:18Speaker 5: Oaks are starting to drop. It's been so dry there
- 17:22Speaker 5: seems like they're dropping a little earlier than maybe typical.
- 17:26Speaker 5: So yeah, oaks. For me, I'm going to pay attention
- 17:30Speaker 5: to the weather. I have that tag filled, so I'm
- 17:33Speaker 5: not itching or dying to get out there. And right
- 17:36Speaker 5: now the outlook doesn't look too great for temperatures mid
- 17:40Speaker 5: mid to high seventies. A couple of weeks ago it
- 17:43Speaker 5: was in the sixties and feeling right and then we
- 17:47Speaker 5: had this warm spell pop up. So in the outlook
- 17:50Speaker 5: that I have right now, there's not that cold front.
- 17:52Speaker 5: But when we get that cold front, if you have
- 17:54Speaker 5: a deer still doing some sort of pattern on on
- 17:58Speaker 5: some oaks, or if you still have green beans, they're
- 18:01Speaker 5: yellowing up really quick. But right now it's all bed
- 18:04Speaker 5: to food and temperatures.
- 18:07Speaker 2: If you had to put a scale one to ten
- 18:10Speaker 2: for the next seven days with your guys season opening Saturday,
- 18:14Speaker 2: ten being electric best it's ever been, and one being
- 18:18Speaker 2: you're not going to probably send an alarm on Saturday.
- 18:20Speaker 3: Where does it fall?
- 18:24Speaker 5: Time of year plays into a lot of this, But
- 18:25Speaker 5: I'm gonna say like a five. I'm in the middle.
- 18:29Speaker 5: I don't feel great about it because you're not getting
- 18:32Speaker 5: the most optimal temperatures. But if you're in a position
- 18:35Speaker 5: where you have a deer doing something with some sort
- 18:37Speaker 5: of consistency, he's not been pressured yet. This first week
- 18:42Speaker 5: of the season for a lot of people is go time.
- 18:44Speaker 5: It is the time to take advantage of that. So
- 18:47Speaker 5: for me personally, I don't have that situation. The deer
- 18:52Speaker 5: are switching into smokes and I got to move some
- 18:54Speaker 5: ultary cameras around and figure them out a little bit more,
- 18:58Speaker 5: spend too much time focusing on north of Yoda. But yeah,
- 19:02Speaker 5: I would put it at like a five. But if
- 19:04Speaker 5: you're in a situation where you have a deer pinned
- 19:06Speaker 5: down and you know what he's doing, it's probably a
- 19:08Speaker 5: little higher. On that scale for the first week of
- 19:10Speaker 5: the season.
- 19:11Speaker 3: I love it.
- 19:11Speaker 2: Well, the time is here. Congratulations once again on successful
- 19:16Speaker 2: Dakota's buck. It's always great to it's almost like is
- 19:19Speaker 2: the sun going to come up? Is camera going to
- 19:21Speaker 2: shoot a buck in the Dakota's it's almost you shoot it,
- 19:24Speaker 2: you show it in. So congratulations with that. Awesome, awesome
- 19:27Speaker 2: to hear that story. And good luck this season, good
- 19:29Speaker 2: luck this weekend if you head out, and thank you
- 19:31Speaker 2: so much.
- 19:32Speaker 4: Thank you.
- 19:33Speaker 3: All Right, we got Joe Cater on the line.
- 19:35Speaker 2: He's in Missouri and their season has already been opened.
- 19:41Speaker 2: How is everything going in Missouri? It's a little hot,
- 19:43Speaker 2: it's a little dry. What have you been seen or
- 19:47Speaker 2: not seen?
- 19:48Speaker 7: So it's kind of been all over the place. I've
- 19:52Speaker 7: got a couple of shooters that have been on my
- 19:56Speaker 7: dad's form, but it's one of those spots where it's
- 20:00Speaker 7: it's a duck hunt farm. He's a duck hunter, so
- 20:03Speaker 7: he's always up there being retired and doing whatever he wants,
- 20:06Speaker 7: scaring the hell out of everything. But so I haven't
- 20:10Speaker 7: those deer have not been regular in any way, shape
- 20:12Speaker 7: or form. And I'm really concerned that you know that
- 20:17Speaker 7: three letter word we all fear when the drought comes
- 20:19Speaker 7: is EHD. So I haven't had pictures either one of
- 20:24Speaker 7: those deer for three weeks, two three weeks at least,
- 20:29Speaker 7: and haven't had any rain of any measurable content over
- 20:34Speaker 7: there for probably six weeks.
- 20:36Speaker 4: I want to say, yeah, six weeks. My fault plot's
- 20:38Speaker 4: over there, complete loss.
- 20:40Speaker 7: So here at home, we had a half inch the
- 20:45Speaker 7: other day, but again before that, it.
- 20:47Speaker 4: Was I mean, I haven't had any rain since July.
- 20:51Speaker 7: So I redrilled fault plots Saturday when cereal grains because
- 20:58Speaker 7: they just I mean it's hard, you know, unless you have.
- 21:01Speaker 4: A really good way to irrigate.
- 21:02Speaker 7: And I'm busy trying to stay married and raising my family,
- 21:06Speaker 7: so that's uh, that's priority number one. So uh, it's
- 21:12Speaker 7: just been kind of tough. Uh had one years, probably
- 21:15Speaker 7: a shooter here at my house at least one, and
- 21:17Speaker 7: there's another one that it's kind of hard because at
- 21:20Speaker 7: my home home farm there, you know, I'm I'm kind
- 21:24Speaker 7: of in the hills off of the river bottoms, and
- 21:26Speaker 7: until they cut those crops in the bottom, I don't
- 21:28Speaker 7: see a whole lot of activity as far as mature
- 21:31Speaker 7: bucks go.
- 21:32Speaker 4: So that's kind of that's kind.
- 21:34Speaker 2: Of where we're Yeah, what would you say, are you
- 21:38Speaker 2: anticipating crops to get out on time this year? If
- 21:40Speaker 2: you had a guess when they might eventually get out?
- 21:42Speaker 2: I mean, what's kind of your prediction for that if
- 21:44Speaker 2: if for folks that have similar situation.
- 21:47Speaker 7: Yeah, they're gonna be a little bit behind of where
- 21:50Speaker 7: what we would consider normal here in north central Missouri.
- 21:53Speaker 7: We had a rotary club dinner Monday night, and I'm
- 21:56Speaker 7: surrounded by farmers at that thing, and you know, there's
- 22:00Speaker 7: probably gonna start cutting here this weekend, is the word
- 22:02Speaker 7: on the street. As far as cutting corn. There's you know,
- 22:07Speaker 7: because a lot of those crops we had a very
- 22:09Speaker 7: wet spring and summer. We had a very wet springing summer,
- 22:13Speaker 7: and you know, they didn't get a lot of those
- 22:17Speaker 7: crops in the time that they normally do.
- 22:20Speaker 4: So that's just kind of what the cars that we're
- 22:24Speaker 4: dealt right now.
- 22:25Speaker 2: So so looking you know, looking at the extended forecast,
- 22:29Speaker 2: looks like it's still going to be warm this upcoming weekend.
- 22:32Speaker 2: You know, your season at that point had been open
- 22:34Speaker 2: for you know, almost two weeks or so. Are you
- 22:38Speaker 2: are you going to be out and doing dope patrol.
- 22:41Speaker 2: Are you going to be sitting back and waiting? What
- 22:44Speaker 2: is your strategy going into this upcoming weekend, you know,
- 22:47Speaker 2: like the twenty fifth or twenty sixth of September.
- 22:50Speaker 4: Unless I got a deer that's doing something.
- 22:54Speaker 7: Silly on a fault plot that's doing well the first
- 22:58Speaker 7: few weeks of the season.
- 22:58Speaker 4: I'm just kind of a hurry up and wait kind
- 23:00Speaker 4: of guy.
- 23:02Speaker 7: I mean, if you're one of those guys that's got
- 23:04Speaker 7: a got deer on camera doing something in daylight, I mean,
- 23:08Speaker 7: get after him, because well, the deer on the wall
- 23:11Speaker 7: behind me, I killed him on September twentieth. You just
- 23:13Speaker 7: got to have you just got to have the right
- 23:15Speaker 7: cards played, and you know, the deer have to exist
- 23:18Speaker 7: and be in order to be able to hunt a
- 23:20Speaker 7: mature buck. So you know, if you're if you're getting
- 23:24Speaker 7: consistent pictures of one even though it's hot, I mean,
- 23:26Speaker 7: get out there, you know. But that's that's kind of
- 23:30Speaker 7: what's you know, I've had limited early season success only
- 23:34Speaker 7: because the opportunity was there. And if the opportunity is
- 23:37Speaker 7: there and you got cameras out or any MRI, you know,
- 23:39Speaker 7: get after him. But but I'm kind of My farm
- 23:42Speaker 7: is mostly CRP and it got sixty acre September, but
- 23:46Speaker 7: it's that's my home form. But it's just kind of
- 23:50Speaker 7: one of those spots to where once I get those
- 23:52Speaker 7: crops out, it really picks up after the first of
- 23:54Speaker 7: October tenth of October, that's kind of when things start
- 23:58Speaker 7: getting real. I just took my electric fin down off
- 24:00Speaker 7: my beans last week, so and they're the beans. Did
- 24:03Speaker 7: I mean the crop? The spring plots did incredible. I
- 24:08Speaker 7: think we I don't want to speak for the whole
- 24:11Speaker 7: entire area, but I lost something like twelve fourteen inches
- 24:14Speaker 7: of rain in July in Missouri.
- 24:17Speaker 4: It is like crazy, it's crazy.
- 24:19Speaker 7: It's you know, so my soy beans are not up
- 24:24Speaker 7: to my chin, but you know they're incredible. And those
- 24:27Speaker 7: were late ones, just because I had I had a
- 24:32Speaker 7: wrong variety.
- 24:33Speaker 4: Of beans and I messed up and spray two four
- 24:35Speaker 4: D on them.
- 24:36Speaker 7: But just I when in the spring I'm like super
- 24:42Speaker 7: busy with all the different plots and things, and.
- 24:46Speaker 4: Draped the wrong bottle. That's all it was to it.
- 24:48Speaker 7: So I smoked them and had to replant them. I
- 24:51Speaker 7: replanted some for a buddy on July fourth, and they're
- 24:54Speaker 7: up almost up to my waist. So just because I
- 24:57Speaker 7: how much moisture and that's not very good dirt either,
- 25:01Speaker 7: So but just go go ahead.
- 25:05Speaker 2: Yeah, if you had to for someone listening, if there
- 25:08Speaker 2: was one specific food source with you know this warm
- 25:12Speaker 2: temperatures that's been dry or I guess one one terrain
- 25:16Speaker 2: feature one one a focal point to fill a tag
- 25:20Speaker 2: on a buck, and you had to and you had
- 25:22Speaker 2: to look at it over the next seven days, you know,
- 25:24Speaker 2: twenty second on what is the one thing that you'd
- 25:27Speaker 2: be keenan on the.
- 25:28Speaker 7: Most attentionally history in years past. If you've got that
- 25:32Speaker 7: white oakridge just dropping acorns, do not overlook that without
- 25:36Speaker 7: any MRI. If you're just one of those guys that's
- 25:38Speaker 7: got to get in the woods even though you don't
- 25:39Speaker 7: have any intel, got it, gostit and white overridge or
- 25:44Speaker 7: something were historically you've had acorns drop. Because even though
- 25:48Speaker 7: around here anyway, even though we didn't have a whole
- 25:51Speaker 7: heck of a lot of rain recently, you know, we
- 25:54Speaker 7: are still going to have a really good acorn drop
- 25:57Speaker 7: on timber farms. I don't have a ton of timber
- 25:59Speaker 7: on my form, but I've got some permission spots to do.
- 26:02Speaker 7: And if I get a wild hair and the family's
- 26:04Speaker 7: all good, you know, I'll still go sit in eighty
- 26:07Speaker 7: five degrees on a white oak bridge on a spot
- 26:09Speaker 7: that I got and which is actually not very far
- 26:13Speaker 7: from where that deer came from behind me. So yeah,
- 26:19Speaker 7: that's that's kind of something that I would key in
- 26:20Speaker 7: on if you're somewhere that just got to get in
- 26:22Speaker 7: the tree without the MRI so.
- 26:24Speaker 2: Love it all right, So in the next seven days,
- 26:28Speaker 2: ten being the best week of hunting of your entire
- 26:31Speaker 2: life and one being yeah, you'd be just fine if
- 26:35Speaker 2: you don't go.
- 26:36Speaker 3: H that would be one one to ten. Where does
- 26:38Speaker 3: the next seven days fall.
- 26:40Speaker 4: For me or for everybody? For you?
- 26:42Speaker 2: For you, and for Missouri. You're you're speaking for the
- 26:45Speaker 2: state of Missouri right now.
- 26:47Speaker 7: I mean three maybe, yeah, you know, I mean I did.
- 26:53Speaker 7: I did get into recurve a little bit.
- 26:55Speaker 4: I've got to recurve a.
- 26:56Speaker 7: Few months ago, and I've been jam and arrows into
- 26:59Speaker 7: the hay bill. With that, I might get a wild
- 27:00Speaker 7: hair to go try and spek a dough, But other
- 27:04Speaker 7: than that, I'm.
- 27:05Speaker 4: Kind of I'm kind of laid back in the early season.
- 27:07Speaker 7: You know, if something shakes out to where I got
- 27:09Speaker 7: some MRI, I got to make sure that Jesus is
- 27:11Speaker 7: worth the squeeze when I leave the family, you know,
- 27:14Speaker 7: with a four year old and an eight year old
- 27:16Speaker 7: to to finn for.
- 27:18Speaker 4: Let my wife fends for so well. I love it.
- 27:21Speaker 3: I love it.
- 27:22Speaker 2: Joe, Well, good luck, appreciate the insight, and uh, it's
- 27:26Speaker 2: gonna get better. So if so, hopefully someone doesn't get discouraged.
- 27:30Speaker 2: It's a long season and we're gonna get some cold fronts.
- 27:33Speaker 2: You know, everything's going to happen the way it's supposed
- 27:35Speaker 2: to do. But you know, we're in the very first
- 27:37Speaker 2: leg of the race here.
- 27:38Speaker 4: I mean, yeah, I still got dear.
- 27:39Speaker 7: They're packing velvet, so I mean, it's not you know,
- 27:41Speaker 7: it's kind of one of those things that where you know,
- 27:43Speaker 7: hurry up and wait and then go like hell when
- 27:45Speaker 7: it gets you right for you in your particular situation.
- 27:48Speaker 4: Love it.
- 27:48Speaker 3: Thank you so much, Joe. Good luck this season.
- 27:50Speaker 4: You bet you too, buddy.
- 27:52Speaker 2: Next up on the line, we have Mitch, and Mitch
- 27:55Speaker 2: is fresh off killing a giant in Wisconsin. How does
- 27:59Speaker 2: it feel, Mitch, You're kicking off the season with a
- 28:02Speaker 2: lot of intensity.
- 28:04Speaker 6: Feels pretty incredible and not gonna lie like getting her
- 28:07Speaker 6: done on eighty three degree weather is almost unheard of
- 28:12Speaker 6: without a cold front or anything that early. But got
- 28:14Speaker 6: lucky that he was still sticking to that summer pattern
- 28:17Speaker 6: kind of and got after him.
- 28:20Speaker 2: I love it, so give us set the stage for us.
- 28:23Speaker 2: So it was eighty eighty some degrees and he was
- 28:26Speaker 2: sticking to a summer pattern. Where was he going to?
- 28:29Speaker 2: How far do you think he was coming out of
- 28:30Speaker 2: a bedding area? And I'd love to hear those details.
- 28:34Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 28:35Speaker 6: So actually the night before I was filming a wedding
- 28:37Speaker 6: that Saturday of opening day, and he came through on daylight,
- 28:40Speaker 6: about an hour before like last legal shooting light. So
- 28:44Speaker 6: I'm sitting I'm like, oh man, he's still moving an
- 28:47Speaker 6: eighty three degree weather. So that's it's good to know.
- 28:49Speaker 6: I would get up there and maybe try to hunt him.
- 28:51Speaker 6: So the next day we had a birthday party and
- 28:53Speaker 6: I was trying to get my dad to go all day.
- 28:55Speaker 6: I was like, Dad, I think we should go after him.
- 28:58Speaker 1: He's like, yeah, maybe we'll go.
- 29:00Speaker 6: And then after a while it kind of got hotter
- 29:02Speaker 6: and hotter out He's like you can go. I don't
- 29:04Speaker 6: know if I want to go. I'm like, well, I'm
- 29:06Speaker 6: gonna go after him. He's like, all right, well, good luck,
- 29:08Speaker 6: and we went up. The spot is actually where I've
- 29:12Speaker 6: killed my last couple of bucks. It's up on top
- 29:14Speaker 6: of a ridge. This is in Buffalo County, so the
- 29:17Speaker 6: infamous bluffs and everything around is pretty much right on
- 29:20Speaker 6: the top of one of those. Got a water hole
- 29:23Speaker 6: up there, and we have probably about a half acre
- 29:26Speaker 6: food plot, and actually a tree just went down in
- 29:30Speaker 6: that food plot. We had a big storm like a
- 29:32Speaker 6: month ago or so and a huge oak tree fell over.
- 29:34Speaker 6: So we had to get up there and reconstruct that
- 29:37Speaker 6: whole food plot. I think it was like August twenty
- 29:40Speaker 6: second or something like that. So we went in there
- 29:42Speaker 6: and planted a bunch of rye and clover and got
- 29:45Speaker 6: it coming up pretty well, and he was on it
- 29:48Speaker 6: almost immediately and got pretty excited right after that because
- 29:53Speaker 6: at Young Rye they love that this time year, especially
- 29:55Speaker 6: when I mean the opening week, and there's a bunch
- 29:58Speaker 6: not only that are or oak tree, there was a
- 30:01Speaker 6: bunch of other oak trees around. And that night when
- 30:05Speaker 6: I was sitting out there, there was six sols probably
- 30:07Speaker 6: fifteen yards away from me, just lunching on acorns. So
- 30:10Speaker 6: I'm sure that had quite a bit of a draw
- 30:12Speaker 6: as well, because I could hear him the whole night
- 30:15Speaker 6: when I was sitting there, just falling and hitting my
- 30:17Speaker 6: blind the whole night. It was pretty pretty comical just
- 30:20Speaker 6: hearing them just continue to hit the blind too.
- 30:23Speaker 2: Man, So it was raining acorns, you had fresh, tender,
- 30:25Speaker 2: new growth. How far do you think that buck went
- 30:28Speaker 2: from when he got up out of his bed that evening.
- 30:30Speaker 6: If you had a guess, Well, there's a huge cornfield
- 30:34Speaker 6: on the neighbors to the south there, and I'm almost
- 30:37Speaker 6: positive he came from out of there, And I wouldn't
- 30:40Speaker 6: say if he was betting in there somewhere. I don't
- 30:44Speaker 6: think he traveled less than one hundred yards. He was
- 30:47Speaker 6: better in that cornfield, and I kind of rolled the dice.
- 30:50Speaker 6: Normally we have a pond set up that we normally sit,
- 30:54Speaker 6: like early season or whatever. But southeast wind is almost
- 30:58Speaker 6: dead wrong for that spot, uh so, because of winds
- 31:01Speaker 6: blowing right to that pond, and normally they like to
- 31:04Speaker 6: come out on that point more.
- 31:06Speaker 3: But I from.
- 31:07Speaker 6: The pictures of the night before, I looked like he
- 31:09Speaker 6: was coming from the corn the other way instead of
- 31:11Speaker 6: that point. So I'm like, well, by go and sit
- 31:13Speaker 6: in this blind instead of down by that water hole.
- 31:16Speaker 6: I'll have a good shot at maybe seeing him, and
- 31:18Speaker 6: the wind would be perfect for that.
- 31:20Speaker 1: And ended up getting lucky.
- 31:22Speaker 6: And came out and then within the daylight and had
- 31:27Speaker 6: a quite the hassle getting drawn back in that blind.
- 31:30Speaker 6: I had to draw back three different times before I
- 31:32Speaker 6: shot him.
- 31:33Speaker 3: But what was going on?
- 31:35Speaker 6: Well, I was in this blind, It's well, this is
- 31:38Speaker 6: pretty much my gun stand that I only sit in,
- 31:40Speaker 6: and we have a tree stand probably fifteen yards away
- 31:43Speaker 6: from it, but it's hard to sell film out of.
- 31:46Speaker 6: So I was like, I don't know if on a
- 31:47Speaker 6: roll the dice go up there and it's a little
- 31:49Speaker 6: bit more self and the wind would have been a
- 31:52Speaker 6: little bit more wrong. So I was like, I got
- 31:54Speaker 6: a chance it out of that blind. And as soon
- 31:56Speaker 6: as I got in that blind that night, I wanted
- 31:58Speaker 6: to practice drawn back and everything. But twenty minutes probably
- 32:02Speaker 6: after I got in a dough in a fawn came
- 32:04Speaker 6: to that food plot and didn't give me a chance
- 32:06Speaker 6: to mess around with anything or draw back, and that
- 32:09Speaker 6: kind of screwed me over, but man, I got lucky
- 32:12Speaker 6: that I was able to finally draw back and release
- 32:15Speaker 6: an arrow at him.
- 32:17Speaker 2: No, that's that is amazing what you've had success early.
- 32:22Speaker 2: So for someone listening, you know, let's just say for
- 32:25Speaker 2: the last eight days of September, so you know, picture
- 32:28Speaker 2: the last eight days of September, last nine days of September.
- 32:32Speaker 2: What's one thing that you think would be very important
- 32:34Speaker 2: for people to key in on hopefully have a you know,
- 32:38Speaker 2: similar success to yourself.
- 32:39Speaker 6: Yeah, definitely, Uh, this time of year, a lot of times,
- 32:43Speaker 6: those Braskas are holding so much moistury yet in those leaves,
- 32:47Speaker 6: and they don't really need to go to the ponds
- 32:49Speaker 6: to get all that water but because they can just
- 32:51Speaker 6: get it right from the braska leaves. And actually Friday
- 32:54Speaker 6: night he was out daylight and a whole different food
- 32:56Speaker 6: plot munched in front of a big old Braskat plot
- 32:59Speaker 6: that we had. So I'd say definitely keying on those
- 33:02Speaker 6: Braskas especially. I think there's a cold front coming through
- 33:05Speaker 6: here in the next couple of days, so I'm sure
- 33:07Speaker 6: they'll be moving pretty well there. And definitely the acorns
- 33:10Speaker 6: were a drawing card. On Sunday night when I killed
- 33:14Speaker 6: my buck too.
- 33:15Speaker 2: How risky did the hunt feel based off of access?
- 33:18Speaker 2: Were you were you nervous about going in there or
- 33:20Speaker 2: did you feel that was a pretty bowlproof setup?
- 33:23Speaker 6: I thought, I mean I was a little nervous because
- 33:25Speaker 6: of where he was coming from the corn I kind
- 33:27Speaker 6: of got to well, I literally gotta drive our ranger
- 33:30Speaker 6: all the way up that bluff and come around from
- 33:32Speaker 6: the opposite side. We park up kind of on this
- 33:35Speaker 6: hillside and walk in that way. But I knew it's
- 33:39Speaker 6: kind of hidden from the top of the cornfield. It's
- 33:42Speaker 6: probably like thirty forty feet down below, so you can't
- 33:46Speaker 6: really see the ranger if they're better than that corn there,
- 33:49Speaker 6: And I had multiple different times we'd be out working
- 33:52Speaker 6: this year. We made a new pond for him and
- 33:56Speaker 6: put in a blind, and he seemed to not care
- 33:58Speaker 6: at all. He came out a couple hours after after
- 34:00Speaker 6: we were all messing around and digging in a new
- 34:02Speaker 6: water hole. So I think he got pretty used to
- 34:04Speaker 6: the ranger over time, because he just still come up
- 34:09Speaker 6: and daylight and act like nothing was new. But uh, yeah,
- 34:12Speaker 6: I think it was kind of risky, but I figured
- 34:15Speaker 6: I had to give it a chance because the night
- 34:17Speaker 6: before he was out there broad daylight.
- 34:19Speaker 2: Yeah, so you know, conventional wisdom would say, man, it's
- 34:22Speaker 2: eighty some degrees, don't even bother. But you went out
- 34:24Speaker 2: there and made it happen. You had really good intel
- 34:26Speaker 2: that you had, You had a really real chance, and
- 34:29Speaker 2: you made it happen. How have you measured the inside
- 34:31Speaker 2: with it that deer yet?
- 34:33Speaker 1: I did?
- 34:33Speaker 6: Actually I took it over to a good friend of mine,
- 34:36Speaker 6: Shane Innerbow. He does a lot of antler stuff with
- 34:39Speaker 6: sheds and scores a lot of deer, and he I
- 34:42Speaker 6: think he got it at twenty five and seven a'es.
- 34:45Speaker 3: Oh my gosh.
- 34:47Speaker 1: Yeah, pretty unreal.
- 34:49Speaker 3: I called him.
- 34:50Speaker 6: I had nicknamed him the two footer last year when
- 34:51Speaker 6: I first got pictures of him, I'm like, holy crap,
- 34:54Speaker 6: that's got to be the widest deer I've ever had
- 34:56Speaker 6: on camera. And I guess I was underplane how wide
- 35:00Speaker 6: he was. It was pretty awesome getting that tape on
- 35:03Speaker 6: him after we got him all tracked down and got
- 35:06Speaker 6: him out of the woods. That's the first thing we
- 35:08Speaker 6: were we got to get a tape on him. See
- 35:10Speaker 6: how why this guy is?
- 35:12Speaker 4: Yeah?
- 35:12Speaker 3: Unreal, No, totally totally unreal.
- 35:15Speaker 2: Congratulations if you had to skit, you know, give a
- 35:18Speaker 2: scale one to ten on what the last eight days
- 35:22Speaker 2: of September may look like, ten being to kill a
- 35:26Speaker 2: deer's widest two feet wider than two feet wide, and
- 35:31Speaker 2: one being it's going to be really tough.
- 35:33Speaker 3: Where would you rank that one to ten September?
- 35:37Speaker 6: I mean they're still kind of in their summer patterns
- 35:39Speaker 6: before they start breaking up, and normally around this time
- 35:42Speaker 6: here we get new bucks that are showing up from
- 35:45Speaker 6: I don't know, a mile a mile and a half away,
- 35:47Speaker 6: kind of getting out of their summer ranges. But it
- 35:50Speaker 6: seems like there's another drawing card that I was on.
- 35:53Speaker 6: I put a mock scrape rub and got a couple
- 35:57Speaker 6: oak branches hanging off there too, And he was coming
- 36:00Speaker 6: line right for that scrape tree too, And I kind
- 36:02Speaker 6: of noticed in trail camera pictures that he was a
- 36:05Speaker 6: certain his dominance. Whenever he'd come up to the plot,
- 36:07Speaker 6: you get all a little bristled up and show off
- 36:10Speaker 6: the other younger bucks what he's made of.
- 36:12Speaker 3: And yeah, he game be lined right for that scrape
- 36:15Speaker 3: tree too.
- 36:15Speaker 6: So those scrapes are starting to heat up now too,
- 36:18Speaker 6: now that all the velvet's.
- 36:19Speaker 1: Gone and I don't know.
- 36:21Speaker 6: That's one thing that I know everybody's starting to key
- 36:23Speaker 6: in on more is those scrapes because they're not only
- 36:25Speaker 6: good for pictures and hunting over but they're just yeah,
- 36:29Speaker 6: they're a game changer.
- 36:31Speaker 3: So one to ten, you gotta give us a number.
- 36:36Speaker 6: If you get a cold, good cold front in late October,
- 36:39Speaker 6: late September, I give it's high up there. I give
- 36:42Speaker 6: it to probably a eight or nine. I really liked
- 36:45Speaker 6: late September.
- 36:47Speaker 3: Awesome man.
- 36:47Speaker 6: Well, I hadragulas, I had another buck that I shot
- 36:51Speaker 6: a couple of years ago. I probably had one of
- 36:53Speaker 6: my best hunts hover and that was on September twenty
- 36:56Speaker 6: second in a cloverfield on a cold front and probably
- 37:00Speaker 6: saw fifteen to twenty deer that night, including that giant buck.
- 37:04Speaker 1: Never got a shot at him that night, but it
- 37:07Speaker 1: was awesome night. O.
- 37:09Speaker 3: That's that's super cool.
- 37:10Speaker 2: Well, those great advice, congratulations once again, and yeah, just
- 37:15Speaker 2: an incredible deer. And I encourage everyone to go check
- 37:17Speaker 2: out that they have to see this deer to believe it,
- 37:20Speaker 2: because when I saw it, I said, I got to
- 37:21Speaker 2: talk to Mitch and thank congratulating, so thank you so much,
- 37:24Speaker 2: and good luck the rest of the year.
- 37:26Speaker 3: Appreciate it, Jake, thank you here. You guys have it.
- 37:29Speaker 3: Welcome back to rtfresh.
- 37:31Speaker 2: We had some common advice of if you have a
- 37:34Speaker 2: buck that is doing the same thing, you can take
- 37:36Speaker 2: advantage of it. Go out and do it, even if
- 37:38Speaker 2: the conditions aren't perfect. Mitch is the example of this
- 37:41Speaker 2: and I hope you guys have a great week And
- 37:44Speaker 2: if you're waiting on the sideline for October first, your
- 37:47Speaker 2: time is coming.
- 37:48Speaker 3: Stay strong, keep scouting.
- 37:50Speaker 2: And get ready to enjoy a fun and exciting fall.
- 37:54Speaker 3: We will see you next week on retfresh. See you
