- 0:00Individuals who take up spiritual practice are generally
- 0:04advised that they have to overcome the ego and free
- 0:07themselves from its desires, ambitions, wants, or needs.
- 0:12As the practice advances, the seeker begins to recognize that
- 0:17he is not that ego personality, either as the specific person or
- 0:23in the larger formations of the ego, the family, the community,
- 0:28the nation, the religion. At the same time, we can
- 0:34recognize that the development of the individuality associated
- 0:38with what we understand to be the ego is actually part of the
- 0:42advancement of the evolution of consciousness.
- 0:47Consciousness in matter is not differentiated.
- 0:50Much of the creation prior to the advent of the more highly
- 0:54evolved forms that incorporate a well defined mental awareness is
- 0:59undifferentiated as well. Progress in these levels is
- 1:03slow, taking place across millennia.
- 1:07With the advent of the individualized consciousness, we
- 1:11experience the opportunity for what might be seen as parallel
- 1:15processing, where different individuals are able to work on
- 1:19development from different standpoints and with different
- 1:22tools at their disposal, thus creating an engine of progress.
- 1:29As with everything, there are benefits but also limitations.
- 1:34At a certain point the limitations need to be overcome.
- 1:39Sri Robindo described this in his aphorism quote.
- 1:43When we have passed beyond individualizing, then we shall
- 1:48be real persons. Ego was the helper.
- 1:52Ego is the bar. End Quote The next stage in
- 1:57spiritual development is to be able to utilize the
- 2:00differentiation, the individualization, without the
- 2:05limitations of being tied to the desires and wants of a specific
- 2:09ego formation. A disciple inquires in What does
- 2:15a psychic being's progress consist?
- 2:19The Mother replies quote individualization, the capacity
- 2:25to take up all experiences and organize them around the divine
- 2:29centre. The aim of the psychic being is
- 2:32to form an individual being, individualized, personalized
- 2:37around the divine centre. Normally, all the experiences of
- 2:42the external life, unless one does yoga and becomes conscious,
- 2:47pass without organizing the inner being.
- 2:50While the psychic being organizes these experiences
- 2:53serially, it wants to realize a particular attitude towards the
- 2:58divine. Hence it looks for all
- 3:00favourable experiences in order to have the complete series of
- 3:05opportunities, so to say, which will allow it to realize this
- 3:09attitude towards the divine. Take someone, for example, who
- 3:15wants to have the experience of nobility.
- 3:18A nobility which makes it impossible for you to act like
- 3:21an ordinary person, which infuses into you a bravery, A
- 3:26courage which may almost be taken for rashness, because the
- 3:30attitude, the experience, demands that you face danger
- 3:35without showing the least fear. I was telling you a while ago
- 3:39that I would explain to you what one could acquire by entering
- 3:42into the body of a king. A king is an ordinary man, isn't
- 3:47he? Like all others, he does not
- 3:50have a special consciousness, but through the necessities of
- 3:54his life, because he is a kind of symbol to his people, there
- 3:59are things he is obliged to do which he could never do if he
- 4:03were an ordinary man. I know this by experience, but I
- 4:08saw this also while looking at photographs which represented a
- 4:12king In actual circumstances. Something had happened which
- 4:16might have been an attempt on his life, but was averted.
- 4:20The photograph showed the king inspecting A regiment.
- 4:25All of a sudden, someone had rushed forward, perhaps with a
- 4:28bad intention, perhaps not, for nothing had happened.
- 4:33In any case, the King had remained completely impassive,
- 4:37absolutely calm, the same smile on his lips, without moving the
- 4:42least from the place where he was, and he was quite within
- 4:46sight, an easy target for one who wanted to rush forward and
- 4:50hurt him. For all I know, this king was
- 4:53not a hero, but because he was a king, he could not take to
- 4:58flight. That would have been ignoble.
- 5:02So he remained calm without stirring, without showing any
- 5:07outward fear. This is an example of what 1 can
- 5:11learn in the life of a king. There is also a true story about
- 5:17Queen Elizabeth. She had come to the last days of
- 5:21her life and was extremely ill. But there was trouble in the
- 5:24country and about questions of taxation.
- 5:28A group of people, merchants I believe, had formed a delegation
- 5:33to present a petition to her in the name of a party of the
- 5:36people. She lay very ill in her room, so
- 5:40I'll that she could hardly stand, but she got up and
- 5:45dressed to receive them. The lad who was attending upon
- 5:49her cried out. But it is impossible you will
- 5:51die of this. The Queen answered quietly.
- 5:56We shall die afterwards. This is an example from a whole
- 6:00series of experiences one can have in the life of a king, and
- 6:04it is this which justifies the choice of the psychic being when
- 6:09it takes up this kind of life. It is memories of this kind
- 6:14which prove the authenticity of the experience.
- 6:17For what generally happens when people tell you about their past
- 6:20lives is this. In these lives there is always a
- 6:24progress, naturally, so they become more and more splendid
- 6:28people in more and more marvellous circumstances.
- 6:32It is wrong. Things never happen like that.
- 6:35The psychic being follows a certain line of existence which
- 6:38develops certain qualities, certain powers, etcetera.
- 6:43But the psychic being always sees what it lacks and it can
- 6:47choose the opposite line in a future life.
- 6:50A negation, so to say, of this experience in order to have
- 6:55complementary experiences. End Quote Reference Sri Orobindo
