Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: So Seymour's new immigration policy reckons the current settings are too.
- 0:04Speaker 2: Weak, allowing hundreds of thousands of people that led and
- 0:08Speaker 2: to have residency and eventually citizenship with no questions asked.
- 0:12Speaker 2: That is the route of many people's dissatisfaction.
- 0:15Speaker 1: So the just a six dollars daily levy on temporary
- 0:18Speaker 1: work visas, a five year welfare ban and more enforcement
- 0:22Speaker 1: on overstays plus English language requirements get a bit tougher two.
- 0:26Speaker 1: Marcus Beveridge, immigration lawyer at Queen City Law, joins us
- 0:29Speaker 1: this morning.
- 0:29Speaker 3: Hey, Marcus, morning rain.
- 0:32Speaker 1: Pretty sensible, No.
- 0:34Speaker 3: Mate, I just see it.
- 0:36Speaker 4: It's not really worth getting out of bed for this
- 0:38Speaker 4: because most of it's already here a superfluous it's post
- 0:41Speaker 4: during Minister stam is actually tidied most of us up already,
- 0:46Speaker 4: And I.
- 0:47Speaker 3: Thought mister Sima could have done much better helping.
- 0:50Speaker 4: To refine the business categories rather than sort of talking
- 0:53Speaker 4: around with something that's already been fixed.
- 0:55Speaker 1: We don't have a levy on temporary work visas at
- 0:57Speaker 1: the moment to pay for infrastructure, do we?
- 1:00Speaker 3: No?
- 1:00Speaker 4: But that's just means spirited and shortsighted, because we you know,
- 1:04Speaker 4: we capture them here before they get citizenship of five years,
- 1:06Speaker 4: we're talking about making that ten years before they can
- 1:08Speaker 4: go across the ditch with the rest of our best
- 1:11Speaker 4: and brightest to the land of Milk and honey. But look,
- 1:13Speaker 4: it's it's small money compared to what these people are taxed,
- 1:19Speaker 4: and so who cares.
- 1:21Speaker 3: Why wouldn't we do it?
- 1:22Speaker 1: We need roads when in hospitals, we need police stations,
- 1:24Speaker 1: and the Aussies do this over there.
- 1:27Speaker 4: Well, I think it's because we can actually be sort
- 1:31Speaker 4: of have a bit more pride about coming to this
- 1:33Speaker 4: country than bringing people six dollars a day that I
- 1:35Speaker 4: just said it is.
- 1:36Speaker 3: I don't think it'll ever happen. I think it's a joke.
- 1:40Speaker 1: Do you think we need more infrastructure for the people
- 1:42Speaker 1: who do come?
- 1:44Speaker 3: Oh, we certainly do. And that's why who's going to
- 1:46Speaker 3: pay for that? Well, there's a good answer there.
- 1:49Speaker 4: We've got billions of dollars flowing through under the Golden
- 1:52Speaker 4: Visa program, and there are specialist infrastructure funds that have.
- 1:55Speaker 3: Been set up. And an actual fact, going way.
- 1:57Speaker 4: Back to the days of Lendel's eel, she said, you know,
- 2:00Speaker 4: business markerants wanted to contribute to stuff that they could
- 2:03Speaker 4: see and feel in touch. It's always been there, this opportunity,
- 2:07Speaker 4: and it's finally about to be exploited by us, So
- 2:09Speaker 4: you know that's the reality.
