- 0:02This is an Unspoiled Network podcast. This is spoil Me covering one piece episodes
- 0:13five oh four and five oh five to live up to the promise departures of
- 0:18their own and I want to see them Lufy's mournful cry. In these chapters,
- 0:28we are still getting a little bit of flashback, but for the most
- 0:31part, it seems like we're moving back into the present and it's a lot
- 0:36more agonizing after the flashbacks, to be honest. Welcome to spoil Me,
- 1:00Welcome to the show everyone. I am Natasha. Thank you very much to
- 1:06Florian for commissioning this episode. This time it really is Florian, not Michael,
- 1:10So thank you Florian. Yeah. I think that I was a little
- 1:17taken aback actually after there being so much in the flashbacks, and I think
- 1:23just last episode I was saying like that I had expected the flashbacks to be
- 1:30shorter, for that to take up less time, and that there had been
- 1:34way more of a story there than I'd been expecting. In a similar vein,
- 1:40once we had like really gotten into it, I thought that would continue
- 1:46and was not ready for us to jump back into the present at this point.
- 1:53So it's kind of funny. I feel like I keep getting sort of
- 1:56Blindsided's too strong a word, but I just keep getting like the unexpected surprise.
- 2:02So yeah, let's let's start with five oh four to live up to
- 2:06the promise, because it is. This one is a really surprisingly like moving
- 2:15one. We start off with Ace as usual, just with his fucking you
- 2:25guys. He is so angry all the time. I don't know why he
- 2:34has to have this attitude, but lord almighty, he really does. And
- 2:42oh my god, you guys, I'm so sorry. Okay, full disclosure,
- 2:46y'all. You know how I put the episode on in the background so
- 2:47that I can refer to it when I'm recording. I don't know how I
- 2:53miss this, because like I didn't take my phone out while I was recording
- 2:59or while I was watching this episode. The only thing that I was doing
- 3:02was like petting Pippin who was sitting with me. And I don't know how
- 3:07I missed the fact that there's like a tiny Zoro here doing weightlifting. And
- 3:17I had a moment while I was recording just now where I saw this and
- 3:22I thought I had started the wrong episode because I completely missed it, and
- 3:28the boys who were talking about I bet he needs the biggest ship to hold
- 3:30his giant head. They're talking about Eva, you know, out on the
- 3:37ship with Dragon. I don't know how the fuck I missed the Zoro was
- 3:45here as a little kid. Is Zorro going to turn out to actually be
- 3:49like related to Louvi? Like? What is going on with Dragon being here?
- 3:53Where Zoro is? Uh? He? There's like this moment where on
- 4:02the ship Zoro or not Zoro? Sorry? Dragon is talking to Eva and
- 4:09just says sorry, and Eva says, goodness, is that someone get help?
- 4:15This doesn't look good. Let's prepare treatment, Roger and I don't know
- 4:19what they're referring to because Dragon doesn't look injured to me, and I don't
- 4:27know the fact that there's saying treatment makes me think like he contracted some sort
- 4:31of disease. I don't know. But whatever it was that he was doing,
- 4:36he went without Eva, who is resentful. And I love the fact
- 4:41that when Eva says, why didn't you take me? And Dragon replies because
- 4:46you would attract too much attention. Obviously, Eva's internal dialogue is could it
- 4:54be that I'm too fabulous? Which is honestly what I need to tell myself
- 5:00every time, like I am just too much for something. It's just I'm
- 5:03simply too fabulous. I'm so sorry. So yeah, this moment with Zorro,
- 5:13Why is Dragon here? And with Zorro on the same island they like
- 5:19they've left where Ace and Loofy were already right, this isn't the same place.
- 5:28I don't even know what to think here. How did I miss that?
- 5:30You guys? I'm so sorry. If you're listening like Jesus Christ,
- 5:33Natasha, apologies, I really was paying attention. I swear, I don't
- 5:38know how I missed it. I must have just been too enraptured in Pippins's
- 5:42adorable face, and I won't apologize for that. So we go from that
- 5:46little interlude back to Gray Terminal, and it's really funny, honestly to me,
- 5:50you guys, I couldn't help but laugh at this, because despite the
- 5:56burning of Gray Terminal being truly awful, I'm not trying to dismiss that at
- 6:00all. It was unconscionable. Everybody is right to be outraged. However,
- 6:06despite that, they very quickly have just a new influx of trash and a
- 6:15new influx of scavengers. So really, their whole goal here of getting rid
- 6:21of all of them just goes to shit like right away, and I just
- 6:28think that's very very funny. I mean, I'm sorry that is like all
- 6:33of that and all of the ill will that you brought upon yourselves and for
- 6:39what reason, what did you actually accomplish? Oh, there is something so
- 6:43embarrassing about that. So yeah, things are kind of back to normal,
- 6:48and we also see Loofy and Ace fighting, and there is this moment here,
- 6:57you guys, I have been an I'm kind of loath to take this
- 7:03back, but the scene is about Loofy and Ace coping with the fact that
- 7:13Sabo is gone, and the two of them, like Ace is just straight
- 7:18talking about talking as if Sabo is standing right there, and when he does,
- 7:27Loofy sort of picks up and does the same thing, and it's like,
- 7:30yeah, tell him. And then they both realize that what they're talking
- 7:34to is just like a lump of stone that happens to be around the right
- 7:40height, and that they're so used to Sabo being there out of the corner
- 7:44of their eye that they took it for granted it was him and talked to
- 7:47it. And they're brought up short realizing, you know, of course,
- 7:51that that is not a person. And I was so how to say this.
- 8:03I can't help but wonder how real this is? Like how much?
- 8:15How is it true that Sabo is really dead? Because the more I think
- 8:20about it, he was so close to shore that if he had died,
- 8:26or if he had if he hadn't died and were floating in the water,
- 8:31he would be able to swim to shore, and he the place he would
- 8:35naturally swim would be the island. They're right there. The only alternative that
- 8:43I could see is that he somehow got scooped up by the marines from the
- 8:48wreckage of his ship. And I don't I don't think if he were like
- 8:56a if he were actually a pirate, if they saw him that way,
- 9:01which they had to have done to fire on him the way that they did,
- 9:07I don't know that they would keep him prisoner or not, you know
- 9:11what I'm saying. And so now I'm starting to wonder if it really is
- 9:16that Sabo is dead. I just took it for granted, I'll be totally
- 9:20honest with you guys, that he was going to turn up eventually and be
- 9:28fine, and that it would be a very unexpected thing, but that he
- 9:33had managed to make his way in the world by himself, and I just
- 9:39the more that this sort of goes on the way that it does, the
- 9:43less certain I become that's how it's going to go. I don't know.
- 9:50I don't know whether I want for him to for that death to have been
- 9:54real or not, because you guys know that, like I appreciate there being
- 9:58genuine stakes, I think that I like Sabo enough that I would really prefer
- 10:05he weren't dead. So I'm really torn on this one, y'all. But
- 10:11I'm curious if anybody else out there when listening had the same reaction that I
- 10:18did, where you just assumed, of course he's still alive and he's still
- 10:20out there, because I just feel like, due to the track record of
- 10:28this show really not killing people off, usually if there's no body, there's
- 10:33no death. I absolutely took it for granted that he was still alive.
- 10:37But one of the when I say that, like, people don't die in
- 10:43this show for the most part, the only exceptions to that have been in
- 10:46flashbacks, and this has been a flashback, So maybe he is gone,
- 10:52which makes the whole thing like much sadder. So anyway, the two of
- 10:58them sort of get into an argument Lufy and Ace because they are just butting
- 11:07heads without the sort of middling influence of Sabo, who managed to be the
- 11:13peacekeeper a lot of the time. Lufy says something about how Sabo was way
- 11:18nicer than you, which Ace takes as are you saying I should have been
- 11:22the one who died, which, like, granted is not what Lufy said,
- 11:28but I can understand how he takes it to that place right away.
- 11:33And Lufy is like, well, I didn't say anything like that. I'm
- 11:37just saying that you can just like not be as mean to me, and
- 11:43Ace is just like, yeah, whatever, And the next scene is the
- 11:46two of them declaring separate kingdoms to Dedan with their little like it's They've got
- 11:54these stalls built in the yard with signs that look almost like a weird lemonade
- 11:58stand kind of vibe, and they are ignoring one another very studiously, to
- 12:07the point that in the next scene, when Lufy is about to fight a
- 12:11bear and he asks for Ace's help, Ace just straight up says, what
- 12:20the mighty king Loofy needs help and doesn't lift a finger. And then when
- 12:26Lufy attempts to fight this bear, and gets walloped with those claws. Ace
- 12:33is fucking surprised. I get it, he's a child, but the fact
- 12:39that he's like, oh my god, he told you that bear was like
- 12:43twenty five times his size, Sir, what does the matter with you?
- 12:48You have got to get over this anger. You've got to set it aside.
- 12:52And eventually he clearly does, but it's just like really difficult to watch
- 12:58in the moment. So yeah, he brings Lufy back to the cabin to
- 13:03Magra is the name of the guy with the mohawk. I will never remember
- 13:07his name. But he takes care of Lufy and says something like if that
- 13:13cut had been any deeper, he would probably have died on the spot.
- 13:16And Ace is flipping out, you know, he's sobbing, crying, and
- 13:22he says, it's all my fault. I knew better. Even if you're
- 13:28a captain, fighting alone doesn't make you any stronger. I'm still no good
- 13:33I'm still not good enough. I'm so weak. And this is what Lufy
- 13:41is saying. Like later in the present when we return to him, he
- 13:46is just like, I just I'm still so weak. So I think this
- 13:56moment is sort of the unifying moment for the two of them, the fact
- 14:01that they manage to get through this together, that Ace left him by himself
- 14:09fucked up, acknowledges that he fucked up and is prepared to try and work
- 14:16with Lufy, And I wish I think this is the issue for me when
- 14:22I say that, like, we come back to the present a little sooner
- 14:28than I had anticipated. I think I was hoping to get a little bit
- 14:33more time with the boys, watching them actually working together, because we mostly
- 14:39get to see them at odds, butting heads all the time. And then
- 14:45Ace has this kind of revelation, and then we jump ahead like five years
- 14:50and he is seventeen years old and Loofy is what is he at that point?
- 14:56Fourteen? I think, And they are like best pals at that point.
- 15:05And I just would have liked a montage or something of Ace actually figuring
- 15:11out how to encourage Loofy, how to work with him and develop the rubber
- 15:18abilities and make them work for him, rather than jumping immediately from him having
- 15:26a sort of breakdown to the two of them getting along amazingly and not having
- 15:33seen anything in between. I just I think that I was so taken aback
- 15:39at how angry Ace was throughout all of these flashbacks that I didn't expect we
- 15:46would spend so little time with Ace when he had begun to come to terms
- 15:56with his anger and direct it in a more oh it's the word, a
- 16:00productive place. I guess like I thought that I would get the reward of
- 16:07seeing the two of them working well together because I had suffered through aces bouts
- 16:14of anger and taking it out on Lufy. And I just feel like I
- 16:18didn't get the reward I wanted. I wanted to see the way that they
- 16:22eventually bonded and worked together over this I don't know. And it's the way
- 16:33that this eventually goes, So like I'm jumping back into the flashback. Machino
- 16:44has come to visit Ace, and she says, you want to know how
- 16:48to properly say thank you? And what's this about paying respects? And he
- 16:52says, as a pirate and is Lufy's big brother, I need to pay
- 16:56my respects to this Shanks guy. Lufy says, he owes the man his
- 17:00life, so it's the least I can do. This is like the closest
- 17:03that we get to the two of them working together amiably. Is this weird
- 17:11like learning to respect elders and be polite thing, And it's just such a
- 17:21departure from what their priorities had been that I feel like that's why it felt
- 17:25unsatisfying to me. But I suppose you could count this as them showing the
- 17:30two of them working together. I don't know, but Machino is looking at
- 17:37Ace, and when when he says that he wants to pay Shanks back,
- 17:42she gets a sort of expression and looks at him and then tilts her head
- 17:47and puts it on her hand. And I couldn't tell what I was supposed
- 17:51to read from that motion. I feel like it looks almost as like if
- 17:56he weren't a literal child, I think I would have taken this as her
- 18:02being like, oh, you're so dreamy, a sort of flirty kind of
- 18:06vibe. But I don't think that's it. So the way I'm taking it
- 18:11instead is sort of, oh my god, you're growing up. You're interested
- 18:17in like showing gratitude and what progress for you, You know what I'm saying.
- 18:22I don't know that that's what is supposed to be the takeaway here,
- 18:30So I'm really curious anybody listening if you feel like chiming in on the discord.
- 18:36Just it's a small moment, but I just was sort of curious if
- 18:41there was something that I was missing or is it the fact that he says
- 18:45that he's going to thank Shanks and is she sort of like hot for Shanks
- 18:49and the mention of him kind of makes her go huh, you know,
- 18:53like I really wasn't sure the interpretation of that little moment, and it's not
- 19:02important, it's just my curiosity. So anyway, uh, Machino winds up
- 19:07being the one that's sort of instructing them on how to do this for starters
- 19:11after a meal, and we get to see the two of them dine and
- 19:18dash again in like Upper the Uptown and then as they're dining and dashing,
- 19:25loofy and a say, oh god, hold on, we've got to pay
- 19:29our respects. They stop running from the chef and just bow and say thank
- 19:34you for the meal, sir, keep your thanks. Are you Brad's gonna
- 19:38pay me or what? And that is what it like cuts, It just
- 19:45immediately cuts from there. That shit killed me, you guys. The fact
- 19:49that they thank this guy, I kind of wanted him to be like,
- 19:52oh, that's kind of adorable, but I don't blame him as a business
- 19:56person. Like so, okay, you know what, guys, I forgot
- 20:06about the part where they fight the bear together. I'm seeing that now,
- 20:11So I've got to give credit for this because I was feeling like, come
- 20:14on, I want more of this, but I'm lying. We get them
- 20:18fighting some things, and it's not exactly what I was imagining was less than
- 20:26just fighting side by side and more Ace gassing Loofy up and learning how to
- 20:33encourage him in a more like guidance older brothery type of way. But I
- 20:41get what this is that this is supposed to sort of be that for the
- 20:45two of them. So I still maintain that I would have liked to see
- 20:49that simply because so little positive reinforcement has come off of Ace toward Loofy.
- 20:55But I feel like there was an effort made at least this like seeing you,
- 21:02guys when fucking Garb shows up and just like beats the shit out of
- 21:07them. Apparently. I know that this is part of the way media worked
- 21:15with like in the in the nineties early two thousands, especially with cartoons,
- 21:23and probably it's also like a cultural thing as well. But I have got
- 21:30to say out loud how troubling it is for me that all of the adults
- 21:37that care about kids in this series, like the men at least, tend
- 21:45to beat the shit out of those kids. Like I just feel like I
- 21:52understand that it's meant to be. They're tough love and getting them ready for
- 21:57the real but it's just it's so fucked up, and the fact that it's
- 22:04just been taken for granted, like I can't help but see as just really
- 22:11disturbing, you know. And this scene where he just shows up and like
- 22:15punches the hell out of them, in the context of knowing what happens later
- 22:21with Ace, and the fact that, like Garp doesn't do everything he could
- 22:25to save Ace, I can't help but feel a bit of a way about
- 22:29it, you know. So anyway, this is when we jump forward to
- 22:33in time and we have Ace getting into his little like skiff and saying goodbye
- 22:41to everybody. And I noted the fact that, like standing on the land,
- 22:45we don't see to Don and I was sort of like, where is
- 22:48she? Why didn't she come? And it turns out that she like stayed
- 22:53at the house and didn't want to go because I guess she was feeling like
- 23:00too intensely and didn't want to face it. And we have her smoking and
- 23:06just thinking back to when she was brought the baby. Ace the baby and
- 23:11her men come in and are like, believe it or not, he's gone,
- 23:15and she says, well, that's one less bratt to worry about,
- 23:18though I am sure Garb will give me hell for it. And one of
- 23:22them says, I've got a message for you from him, and she says,
- 23:27why should I carry? Probably just wants to tell me my feet smell
- 23:30or something. He said, thank you for taking care of me, and
- 23:37she just starts sobbing crying. I just I really liked this to don is
- 23:44a really really fun character. Like she's not a good caretaker. I would
- 23:52not say that, but I enjoy that she does her best. I really
- 23:59feel like she does her best, you know. So this is when we
- 24:06go to Loofy, who is practicing by himself at this point with the gum
- 24:12gum pistol, and it's really fun to watch him like finally beginning to get
- 24:18this down. I really wasn't ready for how satisfying it was going to feel
- 24:26to see him manage to finally nail this and Sabo is standing there like smiling
- 24:32at him, and I think the fact that Sabo keeps turning up as a
- 24:34sort of forced ghost, as if in Lufy's mind is what's making me think
- 24:40Sabo's genuinely dead. Like if he weren't gone, the two of them would
- 24:45be like imagine, like I feel like they'd be like what would Sabo say?
- 24:51But the show wouldn't depict him visually as a ghost the way that they
- 24:56are, and it just really out. I think he really is gone and
- 25:02I just wanted him to be around. Still sucks. So then we have
- 25:08Lufy getting the newspaper where Ace is mentioned and he's got a ship and crew
- 25:14and everything, and he says, oh, I'm so jealous, but he
- 25:17starts laughing and says I'm gonna do even better. And I just love seeing
- 25:22Lufy being happy for him. So then it says three years later, Loofy
- 25:27seventeen years old, and he goes up to the house and says, I'm
- 25:33leaving. You're not going to see me off, and de Don says,
- 25:37use your head. The mayor and Machino wouldn't mind us stopping by. But
- 25:41as for everyone else in Windmill Village, we'll probably scare the pants right off
- 25:47them. Don't make it awkward, just go already and lufy just for a
- 25:52minute. He looks sad, and then he's just like, all right,
- 25:56well by you guys, thanks for everything. I'm sure gonna miss you.
- 26:00And they all start crying as well, blushing what not. And one last
- 26:08thing, didan I still think mountain bandits are super lame, but you guys,
- 26:18you're great, And once again she begins sobbing crying. It's not enough
- 26:23to ruin my life. Now you've got to break my heart too. You're
- 26:26awful. I tell you all that you are good for nothing. Oh you
- 26:32guys, it's so good. I love her. She's such a goon.
- 26:38So then we get from the narration the edge of the Goa Kingdom. Why
- 26:44don't you take my old fishing boat instead, loofy. This thing is gonna
- 26:47sink as soon as you get out to sea. It's too small even for
- 26:49you. And he says, I want to start small, but I'll get
- 26:52a real big one soon, don't worry. And there's a lot of people
- 26:56out here cheering him on, a lot of people who are just like rooting
- 27:00for him, which I really, really liked, like I didn't expect all
- 27:03of these sort of random towns folk around here, you know. And he
- 27:11yells about how Sabo is like sort of looking down on him, like that's
- 27:18the way he's He's just like, I'm look at me, Sabo, you
- 27:22know. And it was really moving moment, unexpectedly, so he goes out
- 27:30and he immediately comes face to face with the fucking sea king that had threatened
- 27:38him all those years ago when he was with Shanks, and he uses his
- 27:45gungum pistol in sincerity for the first time and knocks the sea king out in
- 27:52a single punch, and everybody on the shore is just like, holy shit,
- 28:00and to Don gets all teary eyed and is just like, I'm so
- 28:03proud of him, and uh Loofy is talking to himself about how many people
- 28:10he wants for his crew and is thinking about ten, and it's just like,
- 28:14all right, let's get going. And that's the end of the episode,
- 28:19you guys, except for a brief, brief moment where we go back
- 28:27to the present. Lufy's optimism from that day is nowhere in sight, and
- 28:33we see him again sobbing, covered in bandages in the midst of this like
- 28:38clearing of trees that he's like uprooted and broken. And this is a real
- 28:45This one's like fucked up for me. He's sitting in front of uh,
- 28:52oh my god, I can't remember his name with the fishman, Oh my
- 28:56god, Jimbay Jimbei, and he says me, king of the Pirates,
- 29:04What a joke. I cannot tell you, guys, how shook I was
- 29:15hearing him say that. This entire city five hundred episodes. Granted I haven't
- 29:21watched every single one, but I've watched at least like four hundred and seventy
- 29:26five. This kid has been relentless and believing in himself, and then all
- 29:33of a sudden he's calling his dream a joke. I mean, shit is
- 29:40bad, real bad. Oh. This got me right in the heart,
- 29:45y'all, it really did. He says, look at me, I'm useless,
- 29:56and as he's saying this, there's like superimposed over his face the footage
- 30:00of Ace falling to the ground with a giant hole in his chest. Oh
- 30:07my god, it really got to me. I was not prepared, y'all
- 30:11for him to like just completely fall apart and to shows such a lack of
- 30:18faith in himself after all this time and everything that he has been through,
- 30:25and he's just yelling about how weak he is. So I just, you
- 30:33know, guys, this it's earned. I'll say that, like him having
- 30:37this sort of crisis of faith after every like all after the events of these
- 30:42last few episodes, in my opinion, it's exactly the right time for him
- 30:51to be feeling this way. I really think that this event was traumatic enough
- 30:57and a big enough deal, both to him and to the audience that this
- 31:03is when you want to have this sort of like what's it all for?
- 31:07Kind of moment from a character like him who has been so single minded and
- 31:12assured this whole time. But I just wasn't prepared for how upsetting it was
- 31:19going to be to hear those words come out of his mouth. It just
- 31:25sounds wrong. You know. He's just been the guy this entire time who
- 31:32has believed, and so for him to be not just like having a lack
- 31:37of faith, but to be like laughing at himself and not in a good
- 31:42way, mocking himself, it just is unfair. And I think we've all
- 31:52been here, you know, had moments like this where we've stepped back and
- 31:56sort of looked at the place we are in comparison to where we had thought
- 32:02we would be, and just have a moment of like, I cannot believe
- 32:08I ever thought it was going to be any different than it is right now
- 32:12in our darkest moments, when we're just like see, I said everything was
- 32:15going to fall apart, and I was fucking right, you know, But
- 32:20God, I just really hate this for him, because he earned so much
- 32:29more than this from himself, and I wish he was giving himself the credit
- 32:34he had built up anyway. All right, So we go to Garp here
- 32:40and he's fucking blowing up a bunch of pirate ships that are off the coast
- 32:47of this island and evidently just going the whole energy with Garp and the way
- 32:57that he is coming at them. As much as I understand that the are
- 33:00bad pirates, there's also a big part of me that kind of felt like,
- 33:06I, after everything, I don't want to see him blowing up pirates
- 33:10because I have feelings about him at this point, and I am pissed.
- 33:16So we come into the bar and Dedan is downing like yet another beer,
- 33:27and she is putting her glass down and asking for another one, and Machino
- 33:31is that her name is like, I think you've had enough, and de
- 33:36Done says something like so what. But then it's mentioned that Garp is here
- 33:40and she gets up and he comes into town. Everybody is talking to him
- 33:45about how like things with the pirates have gotten really bad, and he explains
- 33:50that I took out the ones that were coming heading this way, a bunch
- 33:55of blowhards, and to top it off, in addition to taking them down,
- 34:01I'm also going to give you this because the Navy isn't gonna say it
- 34:07out loud, but white Beard was really helping keep things like in check.
- 34:12And he points to this huge sign that says security by Vice Admiral Garp,
- 34:19and they're like, all right, yeah, that'll keep scare them off for
- 34:22sure. I hope that's true. You know, it seems like we're meant
- 34:27to believe that these signs do work. For the most part, I feel
- 34:30like that sort of thing probably doesn't. But then this guy comes up to
- 34:35him and says, there's one more problem. A bunch of Mountain bandits have
- 34:38come into the village and taken over Machino's bar, and they refuse to leave.
- 34:44And this is when Machino backs out and Da Don comes out, and
- 34:51this for me was so satisfying. She says, how dare you show your
- 34:59face here after what you've done? And she bashes him in the head with
- 35:06her fucking mace and Garp tells his men to back off because of course they
- 35:14start to step in to defend him, and he says she's a friend,
- 35:19and she says, the hell I am. You were right there on that
- 35:23battlefield with those poor boys, and you didn't do a damn thing to help
- 35:28them. Why did you have me raise ace? Why did you have me
- 35:32take care of them? If this was going to be how it ended?
- 35:38And I got to tell you, guys, I fucking loved this. What
- 35:46a real one asking the questions that need answers. I am just saying this
- 35:52bitch is right, and I need her to say it. I was so
- 36:00oh glad that she just decided to fucking get in his face over this,
- 36:05because I can't let go of the fact. She even says, a little
- 36:13bit later, you stood there and watched him die. You care more about
- 36:20your damn job than your family. And then she just starts punching him repeatedly
- 36:27in the face, calling him a heartless piece of crab. And that's honestly,
- 36:31like, the main takeaway that I also had from that was that he
- 36:37was more worried about losing his position with the Marines than he was about the
- 36:42life of Ace. And I mean, I can't respect that. I absolutely
- 36:49cannot. I don't know. I don't know if there's anything that can retroactively
- 36:57be told to me that would change the way I feel about this situation,
- 37:04you know what I'm saying, Like, I feel that the point I am
- 37:07currently at with the way I feel about Garp and how let down I am,
- 37:15I don't feel like there is going to be something that you can like
- 37:20retcon where I'm like, all right, well, I guess I understand then,
- 37:23And I may be wrong. Somebody, you know, may have come
- 37:27up with a thing when I say somebody obviously am talking about ODA. But
- 37:35it's just really hard for me to picture there being any sort of circumstance where
- 37:43I understand the fact that he like just stayed his hand. There's so many
- 37:51things that I imagine that he could say, like, you know, he
- 37:54was he was grown, I wasn't meant to fight his battles anymore. He
- 38:00wouldn't have wanted me to, Like, there's all kinds of things that you
- 38:02could say, but I just won't accept them. I'll be perfectly honest,
- 38:07I just don't think that I'm at a point where I would accept them.
- 38:13So you know, maybe, uh, I'm underestimating Oda's creative genius and he'll
- 38:19come up with something and I'll be like, God, damn it, he
- 38:21figured one out. But from where I'm standing right now, I am just
- 38:24so irritated with him, and I'm so glad that that Don just fucking calls
- 38:29him out, because that was exactly what I was thinking when I saw her
- 38:35face and the way she was crying. My exact reaction was like, Yeah,
- 38:40I imagine that he like foisted these kids on you. You didn't even
- 38:45really want to take them in or deal with them, but you did it
- 38:47because you were being blackmailed basically. And then he has the chance to like
- 38:53save one of their lives and he just doesn't do it. I would be
- 38:59so pied. I just like, and you've grown to like really love them,
- 39:05Oh my god, I hated it, And good for her. Eventually
- 39:10Machino comes and like stands between the two of them, because to Don is
- 39:15not letting up, and Machino says, how do you think he feels he's
- 39:20their grandfather? He's suffering too. He was right there and he couldn't do
- 39:24a thing, and I was like, couldn't he though, you know,
- 39:30my immediate response is like I don't think that's true. And again, to
- 39:35Don just says, you're wrong, and I was like, thank you,
- 39:40Garp is suffering. No, the only one who's really suffering here is Loofy.
- 39:50Damn it. I loved it. Don I love her. I love
- 39:55her so much, just like, for the record, you know, I
- 40:00enjoyed her a lot to begin with, but these episodes just made me a
- 40:06fucking to Don stand for life, just absolutely the only person who has her
- 40:12head on straight about this whole thing, you know. And then we have
- 40:16Machino's eyes tearing up and her remembering this moment between her Ace and Lufy where
- 40:24this is so funny, you guys. Ace is supposed to be thanking her
- 40:34for these lessons and what he says, because she says, let's learn some
- 40:37manners today, and he says thank you for the lesson, and Mufy's like,
- 40:42hey, nice one, and Machino says, well, close says,
- 40:46we haven't actually started. You should say thank you in advance, and Lufy
- 40:52says, really, that was wrong. It sounded polite to me. That
- 40:57may be true, but it's a special situation. Every detail has to be
- 41:00perfect. After all. Ace wants to pay respects to a very impressive captain,
- 41:06a friend of yours. So Ace, this is so funny, you
- 41:13guys, I love this so much. As a pirate and big brother,
- 41:16I've got to thank him for saving your life or we're both gonna look bad.
- 41:21So she says, let's pretend Shanks is here with you right now.
- 41:23What do you say? Hi? I'm Ace? Who the hell are you?
- 41:31I know you're pirates, but I don't think you'd be impressed, So
- 41:36then fancy meeting you here? She's boo, and then Lufy suggests trash talk,
- 41:45Hey, Punk, what's your deal? Boo? Mister, what's your
- 41:50deal? Can't he because he didn't and she says boo, and Lufy chimes
- 41:54in because he didn't say punk. Oh my god, this was so much
- 42:00fun. I really really enjoyed this. So eventually, Ass, I'm gonna
- 42:09learn some manners if it kills me. And louviy over here is like totally
- 42:15distracted over the fact that he has found an Anacondon nest and there are all
- 42:20these eggs that they could eat, and she is accusing Lofy of distracting Ace,
- 42:25and Luviy's like, I'm not distracting him. I just can't get these
- 42:29eggs all by myself. Classic add Loofy. And when we come back to
- 42:34the present, Machino is like just crying outright, and de Don says,
- 42:39Louviy loved Ace more than anything in the world, and everyone around her is
- 42:47also crying like the other bandits as well, watching this whole thing. Garb
- 42:53throughout by the way, is just kneeling in front of her, bleeding,
- 43:00and the mayor comes and is just like, what happened to Lufy? They
- 43:04say he just went missing after the war ended, and Garp says, that's
- 43:08true. A submarine carried him away. The admirals attacked and tried to stop
- 43:15him from escaping, and afterwards they held a search but they couldn't find a
- 43:20single trace of him. There was no shipwreck, so he's probably alive.
- 43:25And the crowd is just like, oh good, somebody in the crowd,
- 43:32what's up with this bandit? Why did garp let her punch him like that?
- 43:38And Dedawn turns around and she says, Lufy's been a little more on
- 43:46since the day I met him, But no matter what he does, I'm
- 43:51always on his side. As much as I'm hurting, I know he's got
- 43:54it worse and it breaks my heart and I just, you, guys,
- 44:05this is just so good. She just stands there in the midst of everything
- 44:10and yells, loofy, I know things are hard right now, but don't
- 44:15you dare give up? And it's so prescient because that's exactly what he's on
- 44:21the verge of doing. And I love the fact that she seems to have
- 44:23like she understood that somehow. So then we go to the New World and
- 44:37we see this amazing memorial that has been built for both Ace and white Beard,
- 44:47and there is a massive group of people here paying their respects, lots
- 44:53of flower petals fluttering about, And I have to say that as much as
- 44:59I loved the there was a big part of me that felt really bad that
- 45:02Lufy couldn't be here for this. I just and this is often the way
- 45:08that the people who were closest to the person who died are still like in
- 45:16such grief that they can't even attend the wake or funeral or memorial or whatever
- 45:22it is that you decide to do. So I understand, and Lufy is
- 45:28also a wanted man. I'm not sure how much he could be out here
- 45:32anyway, but like I definitely felt like I wished he was here, And
- 45:40it was such a peaceful and beautiful spot with so many people paying their respects
- 45:47that I feel like Lufy would have been really gratified to see how many friends
- 45:52Ace had made and the way that he was being remembered. And there's a
- 46:05moment here where Shanks is talking about as for white Beard and Ace, I'm
- 46:12sure you won't object to their friends taking care of the burial, and we
- 46:17see Sengoku saying, let me take responsibility. This is like a little flashback.
- 46:22So that's why these things are so sort of over the top, these
- 46:25these memorials, gravestones, Shanks and I really liked this. Shanks is thinking
- 46:37about Ace and is like he died like a true man, and honestly,
- 46:46a part of me felt like that wasn't true. Ace died for pride.
- 46:55He didn't die for a good reason. He died because he was trying to
- 47:00make a point, and he could have walked away and this could have been
- 47:06over, but he didn't decide to handle it that way, and I personally
- 47:10feel like that actually makes him really immature. Still, I have a hard
- 47:16time with the ways in which this show tries to demonstrate masculinity because it can
- 47:28feel like we're all over the place a little bit. And that's sort of
- 47:31the way I felt in this scene, because you know, the Ace.
- 47:37Sorry, Shanks is talking about this as though he admires the way that Ace
- 47:45went out, but then he talks about how Ace was a lot like his
- 47:52father, because his father also was the type that like refused to back down,
- 47:57refused to walk away from a fight, and was like too bold to
- 48:01cry. And I wish that he had known that there's nothing wrong with walking
- 48:07away and there's nothing wrong with crying. And so it was sort of confusing
- 48:13for me because I think Shanks is right, but it also felt like he
- 48:21was sort of proud of Ace, and I was like, I don't know,
- 48:25Ace is. I understand that he died for something that he believed in,
- 48:31but ultimately it was just pride, really, you know, it wasn't
- 48:39I don't know I don't know, you guys, what do you think?
- 48:45But yeah, he says eventually, there's no shame in backing down, and
- 48:51there's no shame in tears. And uh, Shanks is probably the most well
- 49:00balanced out of all the pirate captains, you know the fact when he says
- 49:05like, as long as you can overcome it, and remembering the way that
- 49:09he was when that pirate came into town and he didn't fight back the way
- 49:14that Lufy wanted him to, and he was just like all he did was
- 49:16poor beer on me. And it doesn't matter. Like Shanks is truly elevated
- 49:23in a way that none of the other captains are. And it's a good
- 49:29thing that Loofy had him as a mentor. And I wish that he were
- 49:34like around more. I wish he were around right now. I wish he
- 49:37had been around for Ace and that Ace got to meet him and have somebody
- 49:40better to model his behavior after. So, coming back to the area in
- 49:49the forest where Jimbey and Lufy are, Lufy is just beating his fist into
- 49:54the ground, and Jimbay is like, you've got to stop this, dude.
- 49:58You can't keep injuring yourself and Lufy says, it's my body, so
- 50:05it's none of your business. And Jinbe says, what about Ace, who
- 50:09sacrificed his body for your safety? What about that? And Loofy gets big
- 50:16mad over that and is like, if you fucking say anything else, I
- 50:22am going to crush you. And Jimba is like, you're welcome to try,
- 50:25but in your current condition, that shit is not going to work.
- 50:30And Loofy decides to throw a punch and Jimbae grabs his arm and just flips
- 50:37him onto his back immediately. And you would think that it would be sort
- 50:44of Loofy going all right, well, I guess that's not gonna work,
- 50:46but it just is a moment the dust settles and Lufy is about to go
- 50:52for it again. He is so full of rage here, and this is
- 50:58when we get the flashback with Bay talking to Ace back in the cells,
- 51:04and Ace is saying, back on Alabasta, I saw my brother for the
- 51:08first time in three years. As soon as I saw his face, a
- 51:13weight lifted from my heart and do you know why? And it sort of
- 51:17pauses here, but what he winds up saying is it wasn't seeing that he
- 51:22was safe. It was seeing that he had friends, you know, people
- 51:27who had his back, and I really really liked that, you know,
- 51:31seeing it's one thing to trust the person, but you got to know,
- 51:36like one person can only do so much and defend themselves against so much.
- 51:42But Jim Bay starts talking to Loofy in the moment he's like because Luvi goes
- 51:46after him, and he finally has to hold Loofy by the throat against a
- 51:51rock and be like, I get it. Everything seems bleak and dark right
- 51:57now. And you had confidence that came from your relationship with him, and
- 52:00now it's nothing but doubt everywhere you look. I understand. And we see
- 52:09a sort of montage of some of Lufy's like worst losses, which is really
- 52:17interesting. It's almost like he's having a bit of like a PTSD flashback,
- 52:22you know, and it's all done like there are bubbles that are sort of
- 52:27closing in on him. It's weird imagery, but in very extreme like color
- 52:34gradients that make everything look crazy, and he's he comes back to himself and
- 52:44Jim By says, as long as you are consumed by regret and guilt,
- 52:49you will never find your way forward. Your pain may be great but you
- 52:52mustn't let it devour you. There is yet joy be beyond your sorrows.
- 53:00What's gone maybe gone, but you still have something left in this world to
- 53:06treasure, don't you. And there's a long pause, and then all of
- 53:14a sudden, Loofy opens his eyes and he realizes what Jimbei is saying.
- 53:22And he begins to think about his crewmates and his friends and counting them on
- 53:30each hand, and it's so sweet, you guys. He's like putting one
- 53:34finger down for each one that he thinks of and the memory that he has
- 53:38of each of them. First we have Zorro, who's doing weightlifting. Hey,
- 53:45you want to screw around, go do it somewhere else. I'm trying
- 53:49to build some muscle here. Then we go to Nami. Loofy, we've
- 53:57got a big storm on the horizon. Make preparations quick. And as he's
- 54:02counting down each of these and he is thinking remembering each of his friends,
- 54:10one of the huge bubbles that's sort of like inching closer and almost consuming him
- 54:17disappears in this weird, sort of like other space of trauma that's going on
- 54:24in his head. It's I really really loved this you guys, like the
- 54:31having it be his friends that he is able to sort of regroup for and
- 54:37remember and prioritize, even if it's like his own life feels so bleak and
- 54:46empty right now, there are people in it who matter still, and even
- 54:52if just for their sakes, you know, I really really loved this.
- 54:55It was so sweet and you see like the cracks forming in the sort of
- 55:02shell that had developed around him, and all this light pouring in and each
- 55:07of his friends saying his name and smiling at him, and it was just
- 55:13so sweet. It was just adorable. It's interesting, though, because he's
- 55:19got ten fingers. He's only got nine crewmates, and he had said that
- 55:23he wanted ten in the flashback, so there's still room for one more.
- 55:29And I really wonder who's gonna be that last one. But yeah, he
- 55:35starts sobbing, crying and saying all of their names. They're still out there
- 55:40waiting for me, and Jimmy says, now do you see? And Lucy
- 55:46says, I have to get back on the ship no matter how long it
- 55:50takes me. So I'm really excited. I'm wondering how this is gonna work,
- 55:59Like, is he gonna have to sail around and find them. Is
- 56:02there going to be a way that they just somehow like wind up at the
- 56:06same place. That's going to be sort of kismet. I don't know,
- 56:10because he's saying he wants to go back to Sabayoti because he thinks that they
- 56:14will be there, but they are so far from SABAOUTI most of them.
- 56:17I don't know how that would even happen, you know, Yeah, I
- 56:23really don't know. Uh So Jimmy says, I don't have to worry anymore,
- 56:30like in the present, remembering what Ace had said about Lufy having a
- 56:35crew that he could depend on, and Lufy just starts saying, I miss
- 56:38them. I miss my crew, and that is the end of the episode.
- 56:45So this was just a really good couple episodes, guys. I really
- 56:47liked these, and I enjoyed Lufy having an arc that was like all him
- 56:54where we really didn't see everybody else. It was very focused in a way
- 56:59that the others haven't been. But I am really ready for everybody to start
- 57:04getting back together, So I'm looking forward to that. I'm a little undertime,
- 57:09but only a couple of minutes, and I feel like I've said everything
- 57:12I'm gonna so, I'm gonna wrap this up. Thank you Florien again for
- 57:15commissioning this. Appreciate it, Thank you guys for joining me, and until
- 57:21next time to the LU motherfuckers. That was an Unspoiled Network podcast.
