- 0:02This weekend wasn't long enough. We blinked and here we are.
- 0:07It is such a joy to see you. It is such a joy to see the
- 0:11wider Maranatha community here to be with us for this Lord's
- 0:15Day service. As most of you are aware, we
- 0:18spent our time together this weekend to explore the amazing
- 0:22legacy and life of the great Apostle Paul.
- 0:28And I believe it is fitting that as we've come to this final
- 0:31moment of our conference, though our time in these past few
- 0:34meetings have only scratched the surface of this man's legacy,
- 0:39it's fitting to consider some of his final thoughts from the
- 0:43final epistle that the Holy Spirit has preserved for us to
- 0:48consider. And you know that epistle very
- 0:50well. I'm sure it is the book of
- 0:52Second Timothy. And I invite you to turn there
- 0:55with me briefly. It is in this letter that we
- 1:00have one of the most astounding faith installing, joy, exalting
- 1:07crescendos in all of the Bible. Most of us know it by heart,
- 1:13where Paul near the end of this letter tells us by the Spirit in
- 1:18Second Timothy 47. I have fought the good fight.
- 1:23I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.
- 1:27Henceforth there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness,
- 1:31which the Lord, the righteous judge, will award to me on that
- 1:36day, not only to me, but also to all who have loved His
- 1:40appearing. Can you think of better words to
- 1:44be your final recorded words on this side of eternity?
- 1:49What more needs to be said? Why would you need to add
- 1:53anything further? And yet, to our surprise, the
- 1:59Holy Spirit shows us that there are 14 verses that follow this
- 2:05incredible pronouncement. And if you just look at it, you
- 2:09can see it right beginning in verse nine.
- 2:13And we see these names mentioned, name upon name.
- 2:17And then you come even to verse 19, and what do you find?
- 2:19More names. What does the Holy Spirit have
- 2:23to teach us these inclusions? I believe this is a glance that
- 2:31the Spirit of God desires to give concerning Paul's dynamic
- 2:35relationships, Paul's incredible love that he had for the people
- 2:41of God. Let's read some of these names.
- 2:43Look at verse nine. Do your best to come to me soon.
- 2:47For Demas in love with this present world has deserted me
- 2:50and gone to Thessalonica. Christians has gone to Galatia,
- 2:54Titus to Dalmatia. Luke alone is with me.
- 2:58Get Mark and bring him with you, for he is very useful to me for
- 3:01ministry. Take a kiss I have sent to
- 3:04Ephesus. When you come, bring the cloak
- 3:07that I left with Carpus at Troas.
- 3:09Also the books and above all the parchments.
- 3:12Look at verse 19. Greek, Prisca and Aquila in a
- 3:16household of Anissa Forrest, Erastus remain at Corinth, and I
- 3:19left Trophemus, who is ill at my leaders.
- 3:22Do your best to come before winter.
- 3:24Ubilis sends greetings to you as the Putin's and Linus and
- 3:28Claudia and all the brothers. The Lord be with your spirit.
- 3:32Grace be with you. You would think that this letter
- 3:38will come to a full stop, what we just read earlier.
- 3:42I fought the good fight. I have finished the race right.
- 3:45I've kept the faith. Yet in the mind of God, the
- 3:50wisdom of the Spirit, we get a glimpse.
- 3:54We get a glimpse of Paul and what he thought about near the
- 3:58end of his life. And it's because I believe the
- 4:02Holy Spirit wants to show us that the genuine Christian life,
- 4:07from beginning to end, is experienced with and defined by
- 4:13the intricacy of relationships. Paul loved God, and because Paul
- 4:22loved God, Paul loved God's people.
- 4:28And Paul proved to us this weekend that it is absolutely
- 4:31impossible to claim to serve God and yet not open your life to
- 4:36serving His people. And that way of life opens up
- 4:42our souls to one of the greatest joys that we can experience, as
- 4:47well as some of the most painstaking aches that we can
- 4:50undergo. Paul proves that by how he
- 4:53mentions these names. And as much as he was compelled
- 4:57in his final recorded words to ensure of the emotional,
- 5:02physical, more importantly, the spiritual well-being of some of
- 5:05the people he knew. I mean, this man was an expert
- 5:09at remembering names, right? And he he could he could recall
- 5:13some of the things that some of these brethren were going
- 5:16through and he would check up on them.
- 5:18And despite the selflessness we see here Paul also making
- 5:22personal request, he makes these wishes.
- 5:25And there is one particular wish that is tucked perfectly in
- 5:29between the final list of names in this letter.
- 5:32So look here with me at verse 21.
- 5:36He says to Timothy, do your best to come before winter.
- 5:45The Bible doesn't waste any words.
- 5:49The Holy Spirit doesn't waste any real estate in the
- 5:53Scriptures. Paul tells Timothy, I'll do your
- 5:57best to come to me before winter.
- 5:59And this was an appeal that he made throughout this letter.
- 6:01He says in the beginning of this book, I long to see you look at
- 6:06verse 9 here in the same chapter.
- 6:08Do your best to come to me soon. This man yearned and longed for
- 6:14the personal company of his spiritual son, and he puts a
- 6:19time stamp. He puts this urgency on the
- 6:21matter come before winter. Why did Paul say that?
- 6:26I want to present to you 3 brief reasons why.
- 6:30The first one is because of the inconvenience of winter.
- 6:34All you have to do is read the latter portion of the book of
- 6:37Acts to see how difficult it was to travel during the winter
- 6:40months. And so Paul is reminding
- 6:43Timothy, look, you're going to have a much more graceful
- 6:45journey if you just come sooner than later.
- 6:49But it wasn't just the timing of the seasons.
- 6:51It was the timing of Paul's life.
- 6:54The sand and the hourglass of his days was dwindling.
- 6:58His departure was near. His graduation into glory was
- 7:03soon. And so he tells Timothy, listen,
- 7:08it's either before winter or never.
- 7:10In a sense, you can't afford to delay this, Timothy.
- 7:13I need to see you. I want to see you.
- 7:16And before I get to the third reason why Paul mentions the
- 7:18winter, allow me to pause here and provide a universal
- 7:22principle from this command. This is this is specific to yes,
- 7:27Timothy, and to Paul's experience.
- 7:30But oh, is there a theme of urgency in it?
- 7:35Well, Paul proves to us here is that in our brief lives there
- 7:40are opportunities that arise that cannot be delayed without
- 7:43the risk of forfeiting them all together.
- 7:49And that is certainly true when it comes to the call for
- 7:52salvation. There is a spiritual winter, you
- 7:56know. There is a time limit, you know,
- 8:03and the Spirit of God in his Word never, ever, ever suggests
- 8:08that we can postpone repentance or that we can stall in our
- 8:14surrender to the lordship of Jesus Christ.
- 8:16Last night there was a call for people to be saved, and it's
- 8:20very possible that people, even in that call, delayed it.
- 8:23And by God's grace, you woke up this morning and you're
- 8:26breathing. But I want to let you know, as
- 8:30one person said, that procrastination is the
- 8:33recruiting Sergeant of hell. And many will be in hell.
- 8:40I know that's not a word you hear often in church anymore,
- 8:43but there will be many who will be in hell because they delayed
- 8:50in dying to self and receiving the free gift of salvation in
- 8:54the person of Jesus Christ. And this is a tendency that is
- 8:58found in the earlier portions of our Bible.
- 9:01You remember that stubborn man, Pharaoh, do you not?
- 9:06And we think Pharaoh was uniquely stubborn.
- 9:08Perhaps you can make that case, but I believe Pharaoh is a
- 9:11reflection on millions specifically in this matter of
- 9:16procrastination. And you see it.
- 9:19You see it so clear, specifically with the plague of
- 9:22the frogs. And you don't have to turn
- 9:24there, but listen to these words unless you want to see with your
- 9:26own eyes. Because it's almost hard to
- 9:28believe that while the frogs were sitting in the beds and in
- 9:32people's pots and in people's sandals and in their purses.
- 9:37Finally, Pharaoh comes to Moses in Exodus 88, and we're told
- 9:43here. Then Pharaoh called Moses and
- 9:46Aaron and said, Plead with the Lord to take away the frogs from
- 9:50me and from my people, and I will let the people go to
- 9:54sacrifice to the Lord. Moses said to Pharaoh, Be
- 9:58pleased to command me when I am to plead for you and for your
- 10:02servants and for your people, that the frogs be cut off from
- 10:05you and your houses and be left only in the Nile.
- 10:09Pause Moses saying, When do you want it?
- 10:13When would you like the frogs to stop harassing you?
- 10:16What would you think would be the same answer?
- 10:20No, why are you even suggesting another day?
- 10:25Let's get this thing going and you can just imagine as he's
- 10:28saying that the frogs are there crogging.
- 10:31But look what he says in verse 10 and he said tomorrow tomorrow
- 10:42Moses said be it is as you say so that you may know that there
- 10:47is no one like the Lord our God tomorrow.
- 10:52Do you know how many people I've met who said tomorrow Jesus told
- 11:01people to repent and believe today.
- 11:06Paul emphasize that and whenever anyone try to follow Jesus on
- 11:10their terms. They were never taken seriously
- 11:13by the Lord. We have to understand here that
- 11:19if you're in this place and you have not yet given your heart to
- 11:21the Lord Jesus Christ, do so before winter.
- 11:29Not literally, of course, before your time runs out.
- 11:32But what about the believer? Does this principle of taking
- 11:36advantage of a reasonable time apply even to the Christian?
- 11:40Absolutely, and in so many ways. There are various examples of
- 11:45this in the Bible. Let's consider one of the
- 11:46strongest charges from the wise words of King Solomon.
- 11:49You know this very well in Ecclesiastes 12/1.
- 11:52Remember also your Creator in the days of your youth, before
- 11:57the evil days come and the years draw near, which you will say I
- 11:59have no pleasure in them. What?
- 12:02What's happening here? You have Solomon near the end of
- 12:06his sermon. It's really a sermon and the
- 12:08Holy Spirit turns the attention to the young reader and he tells
- 12:13the young man, he tells the young woman, remember your
- 12:17Creator in the days of your youth.
- 12:19Why do you think that is a special temptation for young
- 12:21people? Because in their strength,
- 12:23because in the sense of all the opportunities that lie ahead of
- 12:27them, their vigor, their energy, they face the greater
- 12:31temptation. I'm not considering eternal
- 12:34matters. God, His glory, even serving
- 12:38him, and countless people even bargain with God in their faith
- 12:43and determined that they will give the leftovers of their
- 12:46years. But even the world recognizes
- 12:48the preciousness of your youth. I'm talking to the young people
- 12:51today as though I'm old or anything, but I'm talking to the
- 12:55young people here. Listen very carefully.
- 12:58The world understands that there's a segment of your life
- 13:02that should be used in a special way.
- 13:04They tell you to study. They tell you to travel the
- 13:07world. They tell you to invest.
- 13:10They tell you to take risk. But oh, where are the teachers?
- 13:15Where are the parents who can look their children dead in the
- 13:18eye and say, would you give your best to God, give the best years
- 13:26to God? And Solomon later on in this
- 13:29chapter gives his reason why. Before the sunsets on your
- 13:33strength, before you accumulate growing responsibilities through
- 13:38the natural courses of life, before you come into contact
- 13:43with a failing body that betrays you year after year after year,
- 13:48remember your Creator in the days of your youth.
- 13:52Serve God, if I may say, before winter, before it gets harder.
- 14:01And it's important for all of us to seize the opportunity of
- 14:04every season in life to give our best to the Lord Jesus Christ.
- 14:08But that's not the main point of the message, though it can be a
- 14:11message on its own. I told you that there are three
- 14:14reasons I believe Paul told Timothy to come to him before
- 14:17winter. The 1st is because of the
- 14:19obvious ease of spring, summer, maybe fall.
- 14:23Secondly, there is an urgency concerning Paul's life.
- 14:26The days of his life were ticking.
- 14:30But lastly, Paul saying, come to me before winter is connected to
- 14:33what he said a few verses earlier.
- 14:35So I hope you're still in Second Timothy.
- 14:36Four, look with me here again at verse 13.
- 14:39We read through it. I wonder how many who have read
- 14:42these verses didn't consider the awesome implications of what he
- 14:47commands in verse 13. He says here, when you come,
- 14:53bring the cloak that I left with Carpus at Troas.
- 14:59Also the books and above all the parchments.
- 15:07Paul had personal belongings and he desired it before a certain
- 15:12time. And you might be wondering, what
- 15:15in the world does that have to do with me?
- 15:19All Scripture is breathed out by God and all scripture is useful
- 15:25for your instruction and your transformation.
- 15:27Even when Paul says bring me my jacket, my books, and especially
- 15:35my parchments. I present to you today in this
- 15:38brief message 4 lessons from Paul's request for his cloak,
- 15:44his books, and his parchments. If you're a note taker, here it
- 15:49comes #1 Paul's request shows the reality of Christian
- 15:57relationships. So we see this man here making
- 16:02this request to Timothy. And later on, with a heart free
- 16:06from bitterness, he reveals something quite sad in verse 16.
- 16:12He says that no one, no person attended to him at his first
- 16:17defense. So when he went to court,
- 16:20because he's in jail while he's writing this, not one believer
- 16:23came to his side, not one Christian testified of his
- 16:26character or his innocence. And that news was especially
- 16:33disheartening since it is believed that this epistle was
- 16:35written in Rome and Paul wrote a letter to Roman Christians.
- 16:42Did he not? Paul even encountered these
- 16:45Christians and stayed with them for a few years.
- 16:49And we read this in in the past few days together of how Paul
- 16:52long to go to Rome. And that prayer was answered at
- 16:55the end of the book of Acts. And so I'm not going to turn
- 16:58there, but if you need a reference, it's in Acts 2814 and
- 17:0115 where Paul finally gets to Rome and he was given royal
- 17:06treatment. People traveled from miles to
- 17:09meet him, and they escorted him into their land.
- 17:14That's what people did for kings when they came into their
- 17:17presence. Paul received kingly respect.
- 17:21And yet now you come to the end of this letter and you get the
- 17:24sense that the honor he received when he arrived at Rome, there's
- 17:30nowhere to be found, as he was ready to go from Rome into
- 17:33glory. The people that Paul never
- 17:40forgot, always remembered, seem to have abandoned him, so much
- 17:49so never mind his first defense. But by way of inference, we can
- 17:55also say that no one thought to provide the spiritual giant a
- 17:59garment as the seasons were changing.
- 18:03I wonder why nobody in Rome ever thought maybe we should bring
- 18:07Paul the proper clothing. As the air got chillier and as
- 18:14people were preparing for the aggressive weather, here's Paul
- 18:20in a frigid, dark, wet dungeon and he has to make a long
- 18:26distance call for a jacket to be delivered to him.
- 18:33And throughout this letter, what you really see here is that the
- 18:37apostles account of his friendships and ministry
- 18:41partners is somewhat of a model of what every single Christian
- 18:44can expect in their own journey with others.
- 18:48I want you to see here quickly that the attitudes and the
- 18:50actions that he brings up about certain individuals is almost a
- 18:53preview of general realities that you and I can expect as we
- 18:59seek to obey the Lord and walk hand in hand with other blood
- 19:02bought Christians. So let me give you just a quick
- 19:04surface level understanding of that.
- 19:06Again, look at verse nine. Do your best to come to me soon.
- 19:09He's talking to Timothy. So let me tell you this, that
- 19:11there are going to be Christians in your life who bring you great
- 19:14joy and comfort. That's a gift from God.
- 19:17Timothy was a gift to Paul. But then he noticed here in
- 19:21verse 10 that demons in love with the present world walks
- 19:24away from the cause of Christ. And you better believe it, too,
- 19:27that you might see Christians that once served with you and
- 19:31were in leadership who will also abandoned the cause of Christ.
- 19:37We're seeing that more and more, especially with leadership in
- 19:40the church in the West. But we also see here that he
- 19:44mentions interesting characters like Christians and Titus,
- 19:48showing us that not everybody in our lives will depart because
- 19:51they abandoned the faith. Some will be sent elsewhere to
- 19:53serve God in other areas. And that's still painful, right?
- 19:57Because we want to hold on to all the people that we know and
- 19:59love. But Paul shows here that even in
- 20:01Providence, some other believers will leave you.
- 20:04Not because they're leaving God or the cause of Christ, but
- 20:06because they're serving him elsewhere.
- 20:08You have here Luke verse 11. Luke alone is with me.
- 20:12Isn't it a joy to know that there are some Christians in
- 20:14your life that will stick with you until the end?
- 20:18They will be with you until the end and there will be guys like
- 20:22Mark. Get Mark and bring him with you
- 20:25for he is very useful to me from in ministry.
- 20:28That wasn't true always from Mark.
- 20:30Mark disappointed Paul a lot, and there will be Christians in
- 20:35your life who will disappoint you.
- 20:37They will, but like Paul, be ready to forgive them when they
- 20:42repent. There also be men like Alexander
- 20:49the coppersmith in verse 14, who don't, in moments of weakness,
- 20:55hurt you or betray you or disappoint you, but
- 20:58intentionally will seek out your harm.
- 21:06But don't be mistaken here. Paul is not fishing for pity,
- 21:09especially in this letter, because this shabby clothed man
- 21:13reveals to us a secret. He reveals to us the best
- 21:17relationship, a relationship that will never fail you, a
- 21:19relationship that is capable of sustaining you until the end.
- 21:23Look here at what he says at verse 17.
- 21:26But the Lord stood by me and strengthened me.
- 21:32Some walk, some stage, some were sporadic, some were
- 21:35inconsistent. And Paul ends his thoughts on
- 21:38relationships by mentioning his best friend.
- 21:43The Lord stood by me, the Lord strengthened me.
- 21:47I think Paul was just saying random things here.
- 21:50Is he just trying to sound poetic?
- 21:51No, this man experienced it. That's one of the glories of the
- 21:56Christian faith. Your Savior, as splendid and as
- 21:59brilliant as he is, walks with you.
- 22:03And even though you live this journey long enough and you see
- 22:07crazy things from people that you thought would never be able
- 22:10to perform, all that does is provide a backdrop for Christ to
- 22:15shine all the more beautiful and glorious.
- 22:18I'll tell you this, walking with the Lord for 10 something years
- 22:22that with all the ups and downs, one thing has been sure, Christ
- 22:26is more attractive to me than ever.
- 22:29Christ has proven to be more faithful than ever and Paul is
- 22:33expressing that here. Paul's request for a cloak
- 22:37exposes the reality, the sobering reality of Christian
- 22:40relations. But #2 Paul's request reveals
- 22:44that servants of God are not spared from the natural courses
- 22:48of life. So look, if if you're not
- 22:51careful, you think that men even like Paul, spiritual giants,
- 22:56Trail Blazers, get special treatment in some way and that
- 23:01they get to escape common protocols and discomforts or
- 23:05delays. And serving the Lord does not
- 23:08promise that. Serving the Lord does not
- 23:10promise that we do not pursue things through the normal
- 23:14processes of life. Here's Paul and he, he in this
- 23:18letter ask something that a normal person would ask, hey,
- 23:23can you grab my jacket? Can you, can you make sure that
- 23:28you bring from carpet something that belongs to me?
- 23:32And it does us good to remember that men of God are men.
- 23:36Still, it's no different for Paul here because he's doing
- 23:41something that we can relate to men of the spiritual caliber.
- 23:45And I thought to myself when reading Paul, asking for a
- 23:47jacket could not have God materialize one out of thin air
- 23:50for him. Could not have God defied the
- 23:55natural law and warmed his body while he stayed there isolated.
- 24:03Could not have God sent a vision like he did to Ananias at Paul's
- 24:08conversion and said, hey, listen, you're a you're an
- 24:12apostle. My servant is freezing.
- 24:15Get up, take this jacket and go to him.
- 24:17Could have got that. He could have done that and much
- 24:19more. Just like God can do many things
- 24:22but often doesn't use the miraculous.
- 24:26Here's a hint of that. Look at verse 20 in your Bibles.
- 24:31The last part. And I left Trophemus, who was
- 24:35ill at my leaders. Paul saw miracles.
- 24:41Paul laid. I mean, never mind laying hands.
- 24:43There are people who saw the power surging from Paul, that
- 24:46they allowed his skin to touch handkerchiefs.
- 24:48They brought it to their sick, and they were healed.
- 24:50That's the kind of guy we're talking about.
- 24:53And what does Paul confess? Your Trophimus?
- 24:55I left him. I'll at my latest.
- 24:58Can't you have healed him? Oh, this is a sobering reality
- 25:03for those who claim that every time you pray for healing, it
- 25:07has to happen. If it doesn't, then your faith
- 25:09is weak. Also, is Paul's faith weak?
- 25:14No, Paul didn't perform miracles on demands.
- 25:16Paul proves here that he, just like you, depended upon the
- 25:20sovereignty in the Providence of God.
- 25:24And yes, he believed for the best, but he also trusted in the
- 25:27wisdom of God. And there are times when the
- 25:29Lord can heal in an instant. I believe he can do it.
- 25:32I've seen him do it. Paul's seen him do it many
- 25:36times. And there are also testimonies
- 25:39of God preserving the footwear and the clothing of his people,
- 25:46namely the people of Israelites. Have you ever considered that
- 25:50miracle in the Exodus? When you think about the
- 25:51miracles of the Exodus, what do you think about the man that
- 25:53coming from heaven, the water gushing from that rock, the
- 25:59miracles that were so unique to that journey?
- 26:02And I never hear this miracle being brought up when the Exodus
- 26:05is studied. It's one of my favorite
- 26:07miracles. Here's the reference.
- 26:08Let me read it to you from Deuteronomy, chapter 29, verse
- 26:12five. The Lord says I have led you 40
- 26:16years in the wilderness. Your clothes have not worn out
- 26:20on you and your sandals have not worn off your feet.
- 26:26That's a miracle. Imagine not having to change
- 26:28your shoes for decades, not having to worry to buy anything
- 26:33else for your back. God even says I preserved your
- 26:37clothing during that whole wilderness journey.
- 26:40Could God have provided Paul a cloak?
- 26:45Surely, But he doesn't. In the concluding chapter of
- 26:51this book, we learned that sometimes sickness stays and
- 26:57sometimes you and I have to endure inconveniences like Paul,
- 27:02who was cold and could have used a miracle with his raiment like
- 27:06the Israelites did with their clothing.
- 27:10Thirdly, Paul's request confirms that true contentment is found
- 27:14in Christ alone. Don't allow yourself to miss the
- 27:19concrete joy and satisfaction that Paul exudes even in this
- 27:25request. You're saying What do you mean?
- 27:27Notice again at verse 13, he says bring the cloak that I left
- 27:31with Carpus at Troas. You know what Paul could have
- 27:35said? Timothy, on your way to me, can
- 27:39you stop by the outlet mall and buy me a new jacket?
- 27:48Paul was very low maintenance. Paul even in other instances
- 27:53shares that he could have made demands as an apostle.
- 27:55He could have got royal treatment and asked for it and
- 27:58he could have gotten it, but he refused to do that.
- 28:01Paul was a true servant. I remember hearing this from
- 28:05somebody and I'll try to spare the details, but I'll give you a
- 28:08general idea because I believe so many are so far removed from
- 28:12Apostolic Christianity. This individual told me that
- 28:17they were hosting an event for a specific holiday of the year and
- 28:21so they reached out to a worship team that they have never met,
- 28:24but we're hoping they would come to help make this event an
- 28:28exciting 1A Worshipful one. And he told me that this worship
- 28:32team came back with a document listing all their requirements
- 28:37if they were to be part of this event.
- 28:40What do you think those requirements were?
- 28:42I'm not making this up. I'm what you're about the year.
- 28:44I'm not making this up. We want these specific colored M
- 28:48and Ms. in the green room and also these specific brands of
- 28:55potato chips, and those are only two of many.
- 29:00Sounds like Apostolic Christianity, right?
- 29:02Sounds like something Paul would do, right?
- 29:08Bring me the cloak that I left. Why?
- 29:13Why was Paul's cloak left? Why didn't he bring it with him?
- 29:18Have you read this man's life? It's so unpredictable.
- 29:22One day he's here, the next day he's there.
- 29:24One day he's stoned, the next day he seems to have a private
- 29:27resurrection. He's just everywhere.
- 29:29The rhythm, the rhythm of his life.
- 29:31I mean, he never knew the comfort of a routine.
- 29:34And so just as he was spontaneous, you can imagine
- 29:39what his possessions were like, where they were found, where
- 29:43they were left behind. This man was sold out for Christ
- 29:49and yet we see here that in his request he learned to be
- 29:52satisfied with the lot that God had ordained for him.
- 29:54And the beauty, the beauty of that is that there is a
- 29:57wonderful calmness that you enjoy and inherit with Christ
- 30:03centered satisfaction. It's helpful to realize that
- 30:09this is not something that you and I as Christians
- 30:11automatically learn. It's not like that contentment
- 30:14is realized the moment you come to Christ.
- 30:16Even Paul himself confessed that it wasn't something that he knew
- 30:19right away. You remember what he told the
- 30:21Philippians and Philippians 411, he says.
- 30:24Not that I'm Speaking of being in need, for I have learned in
- 30:28whatever situation I am to be content.
- 30:31Notice his words carefully. I have learned.
- 30:36It took time for me to understand it.
- 30:39It took time for me to grasp. It took time for me, trial and
- 30:41error, to realize that in the end, really it comes down to
- 30:45Christ, who brings permanent contentment.
- 30:51Whether I have the newest or not.
- 30:52It doesn't matter whether I get a new cloak or it's my old
- 30:55cloak. That doesn't determine the
- 30:57strength of my joy. And I argue that the only way
- 31:03you can grow in this quality of contentment is by One Ave.
- 31:08experiencing the fulfillment that comes from personal
- 31:12fellowship with Christ. And Jeremiah Burrows, a Puritan
- 31:19who wrote The Rare Jewel of Christian Contentment, would
- 31:22agree. I rarely do this, but from time
- 31:25to time I love to quote some of these men, and I believe his
- 31:28words are fitting for this time. Listen to what he says.
- 31:32Quote. Contentment is not by addition,
- 31:37but by subtraction. Seeking to add a thing will not
- 31:41bring contentment. Instead, subtracting from your
- 31:44desires until you are satisfied only with Christ brings
- 31:48contentment. My brethren, the reason why you
- 31:52have not got contentment in the things of the world is not
- 31:55because you have not enough of them.
- 31:58That is not the reason, but the reason is because they are not
- 32:01things proportionable to that immortal soul of yours that is
- 32:06capable of God himself. Yeah, that's why it's like a
- 32:13vacuum in there. You stuff it and you think it's
- 32:16going to stay and it disappears because that soul of yours was
- 32:22made to know the one who made it.
- 32:27Paul at the end of his life shows that you can no
- 32:30contentment in Jesus till your final moments.
- 32:39Lastly, Paul's request defines what we should treasure more
- 32:47than anything. The cloak is not the solitary
- 32:52item on Paul's mind. He mentions books and he says
- 32:56above all the parchments. We're not told what content the
- 33:01books in the parchments contained, so we are limited to
- 33:04our sanctified imagination. But some would say that these
- 33:08books may have included blank materials for Paul to write more
- 33:11things That could be so. Some say that there were copies
- 33:16of his writing so that he can spread them and share them to
- 33:19others or plan to preserve them in some way.
- 33:24Some also believe that Paul, being the genius that he was, as
- 33:28you see in Acts, he was acquainted and educated with
- 33:31philosophers and poets, and so that was the genre that he was
- 33:34asking for when demanding for his books.
- 33:37We're not, we're not certain, but we have more confidence.
- 33:41There is more consensus about the parchments.
- 33:46The parchments, which were made of more expensive material, were
- 33:49very likely copies of the Hebrew Scriptures, and very likely
- 33:55records of the very words of the Lord Jesus Christ.
- 34:01And if that is true, then what a thing Paul does, and making that
- 34:06the emphasis of his request. Look at it again.
- 34:10Bring the cloak that I left with Carpus at Troas.
- 34:12Also the books, and above all, above all, the parchments.
- 34:19So Paul here would have been OK, I think, if Timothy had
- 34:23forgotten the cloak. See, the cloak would be used to
- 34:25preserve the warmth of his body, but the parchments would have
- 34:28been used to kindle his soul. Are we all that surprised that
- 34:36this man wanted the word of God in such confining, intense
- 34:42circumstances? That doesn't shock me at all.
- 34:47And although Paul felt a chilling breeze from the lack of
- 34:52support from his companions, he knew that there was a fellowship
- 34:55that he could know, the greatest fellowship, as he took the word
- 34:58of God and ate them and breathed them in and meditated on them.
- 35:07Above all, bring me the parchments.
- 35:14I've heard from some that they can't get themselves to read the
- 35:17Bible because they're not readers.
- 35:20And from my humble observation, most of those people who say
- 35:24that are also experts in politics and they read all the
- 35:27articles they can get their hands on and they've memorized
- 35:30sports statistics. And can I ask you a question?
- 35:34If you struggle to read your Bible, let me provide an
- 35:36illustration. Imagine a deceased multi
- 35:38billionaire who for some reason included your name in their will
- 35:44along with the contingencies for accessing their estates and
- 35:48their treasures. What would you do with such a
- 35:50document once it arrived at your front door?
- 35:55I know I'm not a prophet. You would set aside time.
- 36:01You don't wear glasses, but you're going to wear glasses.
- 36:05You might even hire a lawyer to help you interpret the legal
- 36:08jargon. Why?
- 36:09Because you want to make sure that if your name is on this
- 36:13thing that you don't miss out on the least of the rewards that
- 36:17I've been preserved for you, right?
- 36:20And yet God gave you a document intended for you with treasures
- 36:27and rewards beyond this life. And I wonder how many of us are
- 36:32eager to discover not just some, not just the surface level, not
- 36:35just the first few pages, but all that God has promised you
- 36:41with all the contingencies that are required for us to walk in
- 36:45them. Is that true of you?
- 36:46Above all, give me the parchments.
- 36:51Above all, give me the Word of God.
- 36:56This is an example that this man sets the Greek word for above
- 37:01all there is chiefly, most of all, above all.
- 37:03You see, Timothy could have forgotten the cloak, he could
- 37:06have forgotten the books. But as long as he did not leave
- 37:10behind the parchments. And if Timothy did not have room
- 37:14to bring all the items, then bring the parchments.
- 37:18I'm willing to face this winter without my cloak, but don't
- 37:21leave behind the Bible, you said.
- 37:27Why are you telling me this? Because if you were here at the
- 37:28beginning of the conference, you know how we opened up.
- 37:30This man dared to say, imitate me as I imitate Christ.
- 37:36Imitate not just my actions, not just my attitudes, imitate my
- 37:41appetites. It's so obvious here, is it not?
- 37:47We've been challenged these past few days and seeing Paul's love
- 37:50for people. But can I add another challenge
- 37:52to you? Consider and reflect on His love
- 37:55for the sacred writings. I want you to leave this
- 38:00conference with an insatiable desire for the Word of God.
- 38:04This book, every page of it, breathes, speaks, and God can
- 38:13use this book to speak to you in ways as though He is speaking to
- 38:17you audibly. It's amazing what He has given
- 38:21to us. What visual are we left as I
- 38:24conclude today about this man Paul, as we've been studying him
- 38:30to the natural mind. What we find perhaps, is a
- 38:32lonely, worn out man who is in a foul dungeon awaiting his unjust
- 38:38execution, eagerly expecting the speedy arrival of his spiritual
- 38:43son, hopefully to bring with him very simple things.
- 38:48Not many possessions left in Paul's name, and those who do
- 38:53not have the eyes of faith might look at this man and be sad for
- 38:56him. That would perhaps be the
- 39:01thoughts of some. You have to remember who Paul
- 39:04was before he followed Christ. He was a man of great repute.
- 39:07Saul of Tarsus, the revered Pharisee.
- 39:11It's very likely that he was a wealthy man.
- 39:12It was very likely that wherever he stepped foot into it, he
- 39:15demanded the reverence of everybody in that place.
- 39:21And this is what he has come to as a follower of Jesus Christ.
- 39:25See, here's how the natural mind would think.
- 39:27This is what you get for following an invisible Messiah.
- 39:34But you cannot look at this with the eyes of the flesh.
- 39:38You have to see it the way Paul saw himself.
- 39:42You might see a dignified man to a despised man.
- 39:45You might see a cold man, a lonely man, but Paul in this
- 39:49final moments instead invokes us to behold a man who was
- 39:53imprisoned, yes, but was not shackled by sin or unforgiveness
- 40:00because the same people that he mentioned that hurt him and
- 40:04betrayed him and left him, he says, may the Lord not hold it
- 40:06against them. In the very same chapter you
- 40:09might see a man here who have lost the loyalty and the respect
- 40:13of even even Christians. But I see a man who is
- 40:17experiencing the unbroken faithfulness of the Lord Jesus
- 40:20Christ in his life. You might see a man who who has
- 40:24pathetically, pathetically poor in this world.
- 40:29But this man was also rich, rich in love, rich in contentment and
- 40:36all. Very shortly after this, he
- 40:39would be clothed with eternal robes and an eternal crown, and
- 40:45enjoying the eternal fellowship of the master that he loved up
- 40:49to his dying breath. Bring the cloak that I left with
- 40:57Carpas at Troas, also the books, and above all the parchments.
- 41:03Let's pray, Lord, we thank you that you've
- 41:16allowed us in these past few days to study someone that you
- 41:22intended to be studied. But we thank you that every bit,
- 41:27every morsel of the Bible is pregnant with practical truth.
- 41:35And Lord, we've got a glimpse of that today.
- 41:37We give you glory for that. We give you thanks for that.
- 41:39Lord, help us remember these truths.
- 41:43Help us to realize, not to be cynical, but help us to realize
- 41:49the reality of Christian relationships, that we're going
- 41:52to know the good and the bad, but ultimately we have you.
- 41:57Lord, help us realize that as servants of God, we are subject
- 42:02to the natural courses of life. Not every day is going to be a
- 42:05miracle, and that's OK Help us remember to trust you in the
- 42:10mundane. Lord.
- 42:13Help us remember also that there is true contentment in Christ
- 42:18alone. And if we find ourselves itchy
- 42:23and unstable, always looking for the newest, always looking for
- 42:28the best, help us remember that contentment is not by addition,
- 42:34but subtraction. And lastly, Lord, help us
- 42:38treasure the Word of God. Lord, your word says, I will run
- 42:43in the way of your commandments when you enlarge my heart.
- 42:47So Lord, we pray that you enlarge our hearts for the
- 42:49scriptures this day. And we believe that as we pray
- 42:53these things, you will indeed help us as you strengthen Paul,
- 42:58strengthen each of us in Jesus name, Amen.
- 43:02Amen. Can we stand and worship the
- 43:05King of Kings and the Lord of Lords?
