Speaker 1: Hi, Catherine, Hi Chelsea, Hi here, we are here, we
0:04
Speaker 1: are It's what day is it?
0:06
Speaker 2: Is it Thursday? Yes, it's Thursday. Must be Thursday. It's
0:08
Speaker 2: our podcast day.
0:09
Speaker 3: And you're back in Whistler.
0:10
Speaker 2: I am, I'm back. I'm home.
0:13
Speaker 4: How has the skiing, I mean, as much as you've
0:15
Speaker 4: been able to be there, how's the skiing been this year?
0:16
Speaker 1: Well, the skiing's been good. I mean a couple of
0:20
Speaker 1: dry spells or rain spells. Whistle gets wet so it
0:23
Speaker 1: kind of ruins the snow. But there's a lot of
0:25
Speaker 1: snow right now. I mean, I'm still recuperating from my
0:27
Speaker 1: shoulder stitch, so I'm not really skiing, but I just
0:30
Speaker 1: love being here, you know, in the snow. And I've
0:32
Speaker 1: been reunited with Doug, my dog trainer. Up here was
0:36
Speaker 1: with him. She moved into my house. Abbey from Tail
0:40
Speaker 1: Tail Tails from Whistler. I don't know what the company is,
0:43
Speaker 1: hot Tails from Whistler Dog, but she's so awesome. I mean,
0:47
Speaker 1: she really saved me when I had found out I
0:49
Speaker 1: had to get that shoulder surgery. So Doug now thinks
0:53
Speaker 1: she's her mother, his mother, so I have to contest
0:56
Speaker 1: with that, but I'll fucking take it, you know what
0:58
Speaker 1: I mean.
0:58
Speaker 2: She's so good with him, and he's so I mean,
1:01
Speaker 2: you should eat.
1:01
Speaker 1: When I he sees me, he puts my hand in
1:03
Speaker 1: his mouth and he's not biting, but he's playing, and
1:06
Speaker 1: he just like and she goes. That's when he is
1:08
Speaker 1: so overwhelmed with emotion that he can't express himself, like
1:12
Speaker 1: he just and he when I got home, I mean,
1:14
Speaker 1: he had my hand in his mouth for like almost
1:17
Speaker 1: forty minutes. I could not get it out.
1:19
Speaker 3: And cute aggression you ever get that where he's just.
1:21
Speaker 2: Like, look at me, look at me. I'm like, oh, dog,
1:23
Speaker 2: I didn't want to leave you. I didn't want to.
1:27

1:30

3:14
Speaker 1: I'm coming to Dublin. I'm coming to the UK. I'm

3:28

3:38
Speaker 3: That sounds like fun. I'm going to go see you abroad.
3:41
Speaker 1: I know I want to go see me abroad, and
3:43
Speaker 1: there all be, there, all be. We have a best
3:46
Speaker 1: selling New York Times author on today, her new book,
3:50
Speaker 1: Dare I Say It? Everything I Wish I'd known about Menopause,
3:53
Speaker 1: debut at number four on the New York Times Bestsellers List.
3:56
Speaker 1: Please welcome, actor, author, and entrepreneurs are my friend, Naomi Watts.
4:02
Speaker 5: Oh hello, oh.
4:03
Speaker 2: Hello menopause lady.
4:06
Speaker 1: Hi, Hi are you excited to continue your talking about menopause.
4:15
Speaker 2: I know that you have.
4:16
Speaker 1: I've seen you everywhere. I know I feel very exposed. Yeah,
4:22
Speaker 1: definitely Billy too.
4:25
Speaker 2: Poor Billy, Poor hot Billy.
4:27
Speaker 1: She's married to Billy Krudup, who I've a very intense
4:31
Speaker 1: crush on. I've expressed such to him and Naomi together,
4:35
Speaker 1: and luckily he's very gracious at my advances, but also
4:40
Speaker 1: keeps his distance.
4:41
Speaker 2: First of all, on behalf of my sister.
4:43
Speaker 1: I want to say thank you for sending all of
4:45
Speaker 1: your products to my Sistershana, and she got all of
4:48
Speaker 1: your products. She fucking loves them and I love them too,
4:53
Speaker 1: and I have to say so, dare I say? It
4:56
Speaker 1: is this book and this is perfect for our audience
4:59
Speaker 1: because we have so many women listening, and all of
5:02
Speaker 1: you women are going to get to experience the joy
5:05
Speaker 1: of menopause and the great advantage and the bravery that
5:09
Speaker 1: Naomi is bringing to the subject matter by discussing it
5:12
Speaker 1: so openly and encouraging so many other women that are
5:16
Speaker 1: now discussing it so openly, is that we don't have
5:19
Speaker 1: to go through this without having the information like women
5:23
Speaker 1: fifty years ago did. We don't have to go through
5:26
Speaker 1: all of this without talking about it like women fifty
5:28
Speaker 1: years ago did.
5:31
Speaker 6: We?
5:31
Speaker 1: And there are so many tools, and there are so
5:33
Speaker 1: many brands, including Stripes, which is Naomi's brand, that has
5:38
Speaker 1: so many ways to help you deal with all of
5:41
Speaker 1: the experiences that you will go through during perimenopause. And
5:46
Speaker 1: you also mentioned which is very funny because my sister
5:48
Speaker 1: Sir Shana, who is a nurse, said on the podcast
5:51
Speaker 1: she goes, you know, menopause is just actually one day.
5:54
Speaker 2: It's a year from the day of your last period.
5:57
Speaker 2: Is that right? Is that what it is?
5:58
Speaker 5: That's exactly right.
6:00
Speaker 1: I said to her, you don't know what the fuck
6:01
Speaker 1: you're talking about. This was this was a couple of right,
6:04
Speaker 1: This is a couple of years ago, right, right. And
6:08
Speaker 1: while she's an urn, so clearly she always knows the
6:10
Speaker 1: way more than I do. But you also talk about
6:13
Speaker 1: that in the book, which is which I think a
6:15
Speaker 1: lot of people didn't know, right.
6:17
Speaker 7: Yeah, And that also, you know, it's basically a third
6:21
Speaker 7: of our lives that we will be in this menopause, perimenopause,
6:26
Speaker 7: postmenopause state. You know that, So not to say that
6:32
Speaker 7: the doom and gloom of your symptoms will last did that.
6:34
Speaker 7: There's you know, many decades, but you could still have
6:39
Speaker 7: some menopause related symptoms that you know, unless you're getting treatment,
6:45
Speaker 7: and that is obviously everyone's choice, whatever is safe for them.
6:49
Speaker 5: So it is something to prepare for, but not with fear.
6:53
Speaker 7: And we don't have to flail around trying to piece
6:56
Speaker 7: it all together by ourselves anymore, because it's now can open.
7:00
Speaker 7: We can talk to our friends, we can go to
7:02
Speaker 7: our doctors with the right questions and explore it with
7:08
Speaker 7: feeling armed with what's available now out there on the
7:12
Speaker 7: on the internet. I mean, there's that fantastic New York
7:15
Speaker 7: Times Susan Dominus article that was written a couple of
7:18
Speaker 7: years ago that really goes granular into how to.
7:22
Speaker 5: Approach treatment if you want to. It's a different time.
7:26
Speaker 1: And one of the things that you talk about in
7:28
Speaker 1: your book that I think is so people don't really
7:31
Speaker 1: realize is that you can be going through perimenopause and
7:35
Speaker 1: also becoming a mother, like motherhood can be in conjunction
7:39
Speaker 1: with perimenopause.
7:40
Speaker 2: So, which is something that happened to you?
7:43
Speaker 7: Yes, I well, the news came to me that I
7:46
Speaker 7: was close to menopause quote unquote at thirty six, when
7:50
Speaker 7: I was not getting pregnant. My doctor said, let's take
7:53
Speaker 7: some blood work and I did, and then the results
7:57
Speaker 7: suggested that I was you know, I had a high
8:00
Speaker 7: FSH level, which is follicle stimulating hormone. And I kind
8:05
Speaker 7: of ran out of the office, not ran, but like
8:07
Speaker 7: walked out of the office in pieces, feeling terrified.
8:11
Speaker 5: Oh my god, two bits of bad news.
8:13
Speaker 7: My fertility was done, possibly and I was going to
8:17
Speaker 7: be going into menopause, which just felt like the end
8:20
Speaker 7: of everything. I called my mom right away and said,
8:23
Speaker 7: why didn't you tell me more? She had told me
8:26
Speaker 7: that she went into it at forty five, but when
8:29
Speaker 7: I asked her, why shouldn't give me more detail, she said, well,
8:33
Speaker 7: these were the conversations I never had with you, because
8:36
Speaker 7: my mother never had them with me, Like there was
8:39
Speaker 7: some code of silence that was just agreed upon. We
8:43
Speaker 7: suck it up, we suffered through, we sold youer on,
8:46
Speaker 7: and yeah, that's just the way it goes. And this
8:50
Speaker 7: made no sense when we're half the population that is
8:55
Speaker 7: going to get there, God willing that we lived that long,
8:58
Speaker 7: and and yeah, why should we suffer? Why why should
9:03
Speaker 7: we have to deal with any kind of conversation that
9:07
Speaker 7: is taboo or stigmatized. It didn't make any sense, especially
9:12
Speaker 7: now that we're living longer, so we need to optimize
9:14
Speaker 7: our health. And you know, if you don't get things
9:17
Speaker 7: under control, you it can lead to other issues.
9:20
Speaker 1: Yeah, there's a lot of like suffering, like the subject
9:23
Speaker 1: of women suffering and women being tough and having to deal.
9:26
Speaker 1: First of all, we're juggling more than most men are
9:28
Speaker 1: on a daily basis. You know, we're able to multitask,
9:31
Speaker 1: we're able to do all of these things. But the
9:33
Speaker 1: idea of like female suffering is just it's so crazy
9:37
Speaker 1: that people, I mean, there are certain people who think
9:40
Speaker 1: you have to suffer, that it is part of the journey,
9:42
Speaker 1: that it is part of the game. You have to
9:44
Speaker 1: suffer in order to get stronger, you have to suffer
9:47
Speaker 1: in order to you know, be the body weight you
9:49
Speaker 1: want to be. You have to suffer. It's like that's
9:50
Speaker 1: all bullshit. You don't have to suffer. You have to
9:54
Speaker 1: work hard and be determined.
9:56
Speaker 5: I know, it's like it's part of our programming.
9:58
Speaker 7: I mean, and you know, even going back to the
10:00
Speaker 7: first time we had our periods and there was pain
10:03
Speaker 7: and it was like come on, everyone has period pains.
10:06
Speaker 5: Just suck it up, You're fine. And then you find
10:07
Speaker 5: out ten years later, this young woman's got endometriosis, and
10:12
Speaker 5: you know it, has been complaining about it, but everyone
10:15
Speaker 5: around her has said, you know, you can deal. So
10:19
Speaker 5: I think it's just part of our wiring that we
10:24
Speaker 5: think that we miss just soldier through. And I don't
10:27
Speaker 5: think we need to do that.
10:29
Speaker 7: And I think as we get to this point in
10:31
Speaker 7: our life, as you know, older women who have experienced
10:36
Speaker 7: a few things, we get to say no, actually not,
10:39
Speaker 7: I'm not gonna I'm not just going to roll through this.
10:42
Speaker 7: I'd like some support and I'd like to have some
10:46
Speaker 7: compassion and empathy from all those around me.
10:49
Speaker 2: So what was like, what was the issue for you?
10:51
Speaker 2: Because I mean, coming up with this.
10:53
Speaker 1: Product line is incredible, it's incredibly helpful for so many women.
10:56
Speaker 1: What was the issue for you that made you develop
10:59
Speaker 1: your first product?
11:00
Speaker 2: In which one was the first one?
11:02
Speaker 7: Okay, So I developed this company called Stripes Beauty because
11:06
Speaker 7: we've owned our stripes. I wanted this woman to feel
11:09
Speaker 7: seen that it was not the end that she should
11:12
Speaker 7: head into this time with support and agency unapologetically so,
11:18
Speaker 7: and I really wanted to create a brand that recognized
11:23
Speaker 7: her symptoms, her age, exactly where she's at, and not
11:29
Speaker 7: promise the world that you could look like a twenty
11:31
Speaker 7: five year old, because frankly, when I was twenty five,
11:33
Speaker 7: I didn't like how I looked. I want to look
11:35
Speaker 7: my best in this moment, right now.
11:37
Speaker 1: And also that this is a part of your life.
11:40
Speaker 1: This isn't the end of your life, and there is
11:42
Speaker 1: more to be excited about after, after you're done with menopause,
11:46
Speaker 1: and quite possibly during the whole process of menopause, which
11:49
Speaker 1: I would argue is something that you can go through
11:52
Speaker 1: with the right help and the right support and the
11:54
Speaker 1: right products, while enjoying the time that you're going. It's
11:58
Speaker 1: not like a funeral. You have a whole life ahead
12:00
Speaker 1: of you after exactly. It's just it's a whole new chapter.
12:06
Speaker 7: Yes, some changes take place, and not just physically emotionally.
12:10
Speaker 7: You know, your household emptying out perhaps, or about to
12:14
Speaker 7: your ailing parents, job pressures, marriage issues, you know like that.
12:19
Speaker 7: So many things can happen it at this exact time,
12:23
Speaker 7: and it's kind of a cruel trick that you do
12:25
Speaker 7: get that zinger of the old metopause thing. But we
12:28
Speaker 7: can get through challenges again with support systems and good doctors,
12:36
Speaker 7: good community, all of it. But to go back to
12:40
Speaker 7: your question, Magevanna if I may is one of our
12:44
Speaker 7: best seller and you've got it right there. It's one
12:48
Speaker 7: of the curve Yer bottles. I think that's the loop.
12:51
Speaker 2: This is oh my glide, that's the play oil. I'm
12:53
Speaker 2: going to use that for butts.
12:55
Speaker 7: So I wanted to create a product line that was
12:57
Speaker 7: from scalp to thatch because we need extra hydration at
13:02
Speaker 7: all of those points. And that's a deep hydration level
13:08
Speaker 7: for your skin, for your hair, for your body, and
13:11
Speaker 7: the badge.
13:12
Speaker 1: And so you can put this anywhere, right, you can
13:14
Speaker 1: put it on your scalp or your vadge.
13:16
Speaker 5: Oh no, wait, what do you you've got them. That's
13:19
Speaker 5: just for the badge. The power move, oh, the power move.
13:22
Speaker 5: It's just for the face.
13:24
Speaker 2: Just face. You don't put the face on your vagina. No,
13:30
Speaker 2: you can put it on.
13:31
Speaker 5: The face of your lover and then maybe.
13:33
Speaker 1: He's and then he can put it on your vegel,
13:35
Speaker 1: on the base, on the base of your vagina.
13:38
Speaker 2: This one is.
13:38
Speaker 5: Called face debate.
13:40
Speaker 2: Face debase.
13:41
Speaker 1: This is called rest and clean face, very clever I
13:44
Speaker 1: love that, which is a nourishing and calming face wash.
13:47
Speaker 2: And then there is lube. And then what do you
13:49
Speaker 2: have for night sweats?
13:51
Speaker 7: Well, there's different things you can do for for night sweats.
13:54
Speaker 7: And if you are into supplements, we have something called
13:57
Speaker 7: inside Edition. Is that what you have there?
13:59
Speaker 1: I have inside it. Yeah, I think that's it right there.
14:01
Speaker 1: Oh yeah, that's right here.
14:03
Speaker 5: Yeah, that's going to help you with.
14:05
Speaker 2: I've taken these. I've taken these for my night sweats
14:07
Speaker 2: and they work.
14:08
Speaker 3: I've taken good.
14:09
Speaker 5: Yes, good, I'm glad to heart. Yeah.
14:11
Speaker 7: People in perimenopause, I have really had a great time
14:15
Speaker 7: with those that that is a great way to start
14:17
Speaker 7: when you don't know what's going on. But certainly the
14:19
Speaker 7: sweaty nights is a big one and something that I
14:23
Speaker 7: ticked on medical forms for years and years and years
14:26
Speaker 7: before I was told I was in menopause. Anyway, I
14:30
Speaker 7: have since gone on HRT, which is working for me.
14:34
Speaker 7: It's a great conversation with my doctor. He went through
14:37
Speaker 7: my medical history. We talked about my symptoms. If I
14:41
Speaker 7: wasn't getting enough sleep, it was going to lead to
14:44
Speaker 7: other things depression, anxiety, memory, you know, brain fog, all
14:48
Speaker 7: those kind of issues. So based on my medical history,
14:52
Speaker 7: he felt it was safe from me.
14:54
Speaker 2: And what kind of HRT are you on?
14:56
Speaker 7: Estrogen and progesterone. So there are so many different delivery methods.
15:02
Speaker 7: I have pretty much tried them all. It's all trial
15:05
Speaker 7: and error. Whatever works for you, different doses, different methods
15:09
Speaker 7: of delivery. I am currently on the gel, but I
15:13
Speaker 7: before that, I was on the patch. I kind of
15:16
Speaker 7: missed my patch, and before that I was on the pill.
15:20
Speaker 7: I don't know, I may have the chronology off here,
15:22
Speaker 7: but I've tried the pill, the spray, the ring that
15:26
Speaker 7: you insert inside, they're all great things. The pill is
15:31
Speaker 7: meant to be the least safe one because it goes
15:33
Speaker 7: through your liver and can cause blood cloths.
15:36
Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm on the patch.
15:38
Speaker 1: I just started the patch, and I take the progesterone
15:40
Speaker 1: when I go to bed at night.
15:41
Speaker 2: But it really has helped.
15:43
Speaker 1: I mean that the inside edition stripes really helped me
15:46
Speaker 1: with the night sweats. The progesterone and the estradioltest dial
15:52
Speaker 1: that is that's helping with the sleep, because the sleep.
15:57
Speaker 2: We've talked about this.
15:58
Speaker 1: When you drink and you can't, I mean it's like
16:01
Speaker 1: you can't drink anymore, because you if you drink and
16:04
Speaker 1: go to bed.
16:05
Speaker 5: Yeah, you need a few hours before you go to bed.
16:08
Speaker 7: It's gonna it's gonna what the sugar's gonna spike in
16:12
Speaker 7: the night and wake you up, I think.
16:14
Speaker 5: But yeah, takes the joy out of it's.
16:16
Speaker 1: Day drinking from here on out, girls day drinking. You're
16:19
Speaker 1: not there yet, Catherine, Yeah, no, no, I'm questing right now,
16:23
Speaker 1: I'm questing.
16:26
Speaker 4: Yes, yes, when you talk about hormone replacement therapy or
16:29
Speaker 4: like bioidentical hormones, like that's a buzz word I've heard
16:32
Speaker 4: a lot. Is there a difference between those? Are those
16:35
Speaker 4: like two terms for the same thing?
16:37
Speaker 7: Basically, Yes, it's as I understand it, it's a marketing term.
16:42
Speaker 5: They're basically the same thing. But yeah, I mean I again,
16:47
Speaker 5: I'm not a doctor. I don't know why I said again.
16:50
Speaker 5: It was like I was in the last meeting.
16:52
Speaker 3: Sorry, it's still not a doctor'.
16:54
Speaker 2: Sure what happens when you're on the treadmill, or to
16:59
Speaker 2: keep repeating to people I'm not a doctor. I'm not
17:01
Speaker 2: a doctor.
17:02
Speaker 5: Yes, I have not even played one.
17:06
Speaker 4: So, but you do have a story in the book
17:09
Speaker 4: about someone who kind of went with some info from
17:12
Speaker 4: the internet and then used some hormones and used way
17:15
Speaker 4: too much of them and then found out she was
17:17
Speaker 4: using maybe way too much of the testosterone.
17:20
Speaker 7: Yes, she had a terrible experience, and she didn't get
17:23
Speaker 7: enough instruction from her doctor or at the pharmacy, and
17:29
Speaker 7: she googled it and she looked up I think the
17:31
Speaker 7: dosage of what the male what men were doing, and
17:35
Speaker 7: she blew through this testosterone at a rate that was
17:39
Speaker 7: just not safe and as a result, like started losing
17:43
Speaker 7: her mind and almost her marriage because it, you know,
17:48
Speaker 7: she started making stuff up and it was a big problem. So, yeah,
17:52
Speaker 7: you do really need to be on top of this
17:55
Speaker 7: and beat the CEO of your body and your whole
17:59
Speaker 7: menopausal journey. Because we're just watching doctors get educated in
18:04
Speaker 7: real time about this with the conversation not being open.
18:08
Speaker 7: Nobody was saying I've got a problem, so the research
18:12
Speaker 7: wasn't there. So it's just on the you know, on
18:16
Speaker 7: the on the on the prespoe of change in the
18:18
Speaker 7: last five years, it's only going to get better, and
18:21
Speaker 7: I think your generation or the next generation is going
18:25
Speaker 7: to be much better set up for success.
18:27
Speaker 1: Yeah, thankfully, I mean, I mean we could at least
18:30
Speaker 1: do them that favor after what we did to the climate.
18:33
Speaker 5: Yeah, that's true.
18:34
Speaker 1: What are some other things, knowing that you're not a
18:37
Speaker 1: doctor and Iaomi, what are some other things that progesterone
18:40
Speaker 1: and estrogen do provide you?
18:42
Speaker 6: Well?
18:42
Speaker 7: I find progesterone is it helps me sleep. I find
18:47
Speaker 7: it takes away anxiety, and I've found that that has
18:51
Speaker 7: been a game changer in my in my sleeping. You know,
18:56
Speaker 7: I know that some people might even take higher dose
19:00
Speaker 7: than I do. I've heard that and I'm definitely curious
19:04
Speaker 7: about that at some point for myself.
19:06
Speaker 5: But it's definitely helped me with sleep and anxiety.
19:10
Speaker 1: I'm curious as too, Like when you were starting this
19:14
Speaker 1: kind of you know, research for yourself and then started
19:18
Speaker 1: to become more outspoken about it, Like when did you
19:21
Speaker 1: decide you were going to write this book? With this
19:23
Speaker 1: book you have to get if you're a woman, you
19:25
Speaker 1: have to read this. You have to understand what your
19:27
Speaker 1: body's going through so that you can get ahead of it,
19:29
Speaker 1: like arm yourself with information. Information is so powerful with everything,
19:34
Speaker 1: like and it's just so easy to pick up this
19:36
Speaker 1: knowledge you know, and then have once you have a
19:40
Speaker 1: like a base of knowledge about something to be able
19:43
Speaker 1: to talk to other people about it, it's just so advantageous.
19:46
Speaker 1: But when did you think because it is not a
19:49
Speaker 1: sexy topic.
19:50
Speaker 2: It's not hot.
19:51
Speaker 1: You know, you're not talking about youthfulness, which is, you know,
19:55
Speaker 1: what everyone wants to be talking about.
19:57
Speaker 2: So how did you how did you feel about take
20:00
Speaker 2: this on?
20:00
Speaker 1: I know Billy wasn't so excited about you talking about
20:03
Speaker 1: this publicly, but like, when did you decide to take
20:06
Speaker 1: this on and become kind of an ambassador for such
20:09
Speaker 1: an un sexy subject.
20:12
Speaker 7: Okay, so when after my second child, I was able
20:15
Speaker 7: to get pregnant naturally, mercifully, and after my second child,
20:20
Speaker 7: I went into hardcore symptoms, and in my early forties,
20:25
Speaker 7: I was like trying you know, the internet was barely active.
20:29
Speaker 7: I was trying to piecemeal information together. I was like,
20:32
Speaker 7: this should be a guide book, a manual of how
20:36
Speaker 7: to navigate this time. That is not telling me it's
20:39
Speaker 7: the end. It should be sexy and funny and informative
20:44
Speaker 7: and warm and cozy. Where is that book? And I
20:48
Speaker 7: had a book to support me through my fertility that
20:51
Speaker 7: I was It was like my private little bible in
20:54
Speaker 7: a way that I would read.
20:56
Speaker 5: And it was called Inconceivable.
20:59
Speaker 7: It was a fantast plastic book written by Julia in Dachova,
21:03
Speaker 7: and it was my everything that gave me hope. And
21:07
Speaker 7: I wanted the same kind of book for this topic
21:12
Speaker 7: and it just wasn't there. And I remember talking to
21:15
Speaker 7: a friend of mine and she was like.
21:16
Speaker 5: You should write that. I was like, oh, come on,
21:18
Speaker 5: I'm an actor. I'm not a writer, and.
21:20
Speaker 7: There's no way I'm going to say that out loud
21:23
Speaker 7: in my industry. God talk about you know, career suicide.
21:28
Speaker 7: And so I just left it. And that idea came
21:32
Speaker 7: to me first. Then I came to Stripe's Beauty. That
21:36
Speaker 7: idea came about I guess, you know, ten years later,
21:41
Speaker 7: and I guess being fifty, where I'm suddenly the average
21:46
Speaker 7: age quote unquote of menopause, you know, which is fifty one.
21:51
Speaker 7: And so you know, I just thought, Okay, maybe I
21:53
Speaker 7: can just actually own this now. Maybe it's just too
21:56
Speaker 7: exhausting to keep carrying this secret. Maybe I'm going to
21:59
Speaker 7: do it. And you know, I went and cold pitched
22:02
Speaker 7: the idea to a company that partnered with me right away,
22:06
Speaker 7: and then you know, I just got more and more
22:09
Speaker 7: into it, and yes, even talking about the vaginal offerings.
22:13
Speaker 7: I was like, I'm not going to speak about that though,
22:16
Speaker 7: I'm just going to talk about what a woman needs,
22:18
Speaker 7: which is hydration, hydration from scalp to badge.
22:21
Speaker 5: But you know, you can't do this in half measures.
22:24
Speaker 7: You have to just be all in and the chances
22:26
Speaker 7: are what's happening to me are going to be happening
22:28
Speaker 7: to several other women out there too. So it got
22:31
Speaker 7: to the point where it just got more and more
22:33
Speaker 7: comfy with being you know, more personal and exposing my
22:40
Speaker 7: secrets in service of in the hope.
22:43
Speaker 5: That I would heal or soothe other women.
22:46
Speaker 7: And you know, it just felt ridiculous that women could
22:49
Speaker 7: come together and talk about every awkward moment in their life,
22:53
Speaker 7: whether it was their first kiss, their first period, their
22:57
Speaker 7: first you know, pregnancy, or you know all those things.
23:01
Speaker 7: We came together and we would talk and compare notes,
23:04
Speaker 7: but then suddenly there was this silence, like we're supposed
23:08
Speaker 7: to just manage this on our own. So that that's
23:12
Speaker 7: when I just went, I screw it. I'm going to
23:14
Speaker 7: write the book, and I want it to be informative.
23:18
Speaker 7: I want it to be like a cozy chat with
23:20
Speaker 7: my girlfriend on the couch. I want it to be
23:22
Speaker 7: hilarious and fun, other women's stories, knowledge information, you know,
23:29
Speaker 7: all peppers through it and hopeful and it's not the end.
23:34
Speaker 5: That was the point.
23:36
Speaker 3: Yeah.
23:37
Speaker 2: Okay.
23:37
Speaker 1: On that note, we're going to take a break and
23:38
Speaker 1: we'll be right back with Naomi Watts. And we're back
23:45
Speaker 1: with Naomi Watts, author of Dare I Say It? And Stripes,
23:49
Speaker 1: the company that offers all sorts of relief to people
23:51
Speaker 1: who are experiencing experiencing menopause, going through menopause, which, as
23:55
Speaker 1: we've learned, can be a long period of time, so
23:58
Speaker 1: you want to get your products. I personally like the
24:01
Speaker 1: Inside Edition, which is helps with night sweats because I too,
24:04
Speaker 1: And it keeps you regular as well, keeps you regular.
24:07
Speaker 1: Oh oh, I was like regular, What kind of regular?
24:10
Speaker 2: There's so many kinds of regular to I know, not regular.
24:13
Speaker 5: Period.
24:15
Speaker 2: I was like period.
24:16
Speaker 1: I was like, I already got an oblasion to map
24:17
Speaker 1: that you block that out, but oh, good good Keeping
24:21
Speaker 1: you regular is always a bonus.
24:22
Speaker 2: Wait.
24:22
Speaker 1: One question before we begin with callers. One question, Naomi,
24:26
Speaker 1: when you since you were experiencing menopause, when you were
24:29
Speaker 1: going through your fertility and then you had your children,
24:32
Speaker 1: and then the symptoms became even more exacerbated. Did you
24:38
Speaker 1: confuse that at all with postpartum or did that play
24:42
Speaker 1: did those two?
24:43
Speaker 2: Was it postpartum too, Well?
24:45
Speaker 7: It could have been, yes for sure. But I was
24:48
Speaker 7: pretty keyed into the menopause thing by this point, because
24:52
Speaker 7: at thirty six, you know, it had that message given
24:55
Speaker 7: to me, and then I understood that my night sweats
25:01
Speaker 7: were in fact menopause symptoms, that my irregular periods, thinning
25:05
Speaker 7: out and everything was also a symptom.
25:08
Speaker 5: I didn't join the dots until then.
25:10
Speaker 7: In fact, you know those medical history forms that you
25:12
Speaker 7: fill out, I'd written night sweats on them for years
25:14
Speaker 7: and years and years, and everyone just chalked it up
25:16
Speaker 7: to you, Oh, it's an allergy, or oh maybe it's
25:20
Speaker 7: you know, that extra glass of wine, or they just
25:23
Speaker 7: didn't ever say this could be menopause or perimenopause. In fact,
25:28
Speaker 7: that word was not a word I was familiar with
25:31
Speaker 7: until the last five years, which is a much nicer word,
25:35
Speaker 7: much gentler. So yeah, I was pretty understanding of the
25:41
Speaker 7: symptoms by the time my second baby came. Yeah, okay,
25:46
Speaker 7: but there was still more that I came to discover
25:49
Speaker 7: later which was itchy skin.
25:52
Speaker 5: That also led me to creating stripes. I was working
25:55
Speaker 5: on a TV show.
25:56
Speaker 7: And I had you know, long days under hotline with makeup,
26:00
Speaker 7: and I would come home and after having taken my
26:02
Speaker 7: makeup off and just be ripping the dry skin off
26:06
Speaker 7: my face. It was just angry and itchy, and I
26:09
Speaker 7: didn't understand what was happening. I'd go to the dermatologist.
26:13
Speaker 7: I'd get it a little you know, cortisone cream, which
26:16
Speaker 7: would work for a few days, and then the same
26:17
Speaker 7: thing would happen flare up, and you know, I was
26:21
Speaker 7: just running in circles.
26:22
Speaker 5: Again. No one connected the dots.
26:25
Speaker 7: And then I figured out later that indeed, as we
26:28
Speaker 7: lose estrogen, everything thins and dries out and you become
26:34
Speaker 7: irritated much easier with things like you know, retinoles or
26:38
Speaker 7: you know, things that I'd been using in my skincare regime,
26:42
Speaker 7: which was working perfectly for a number of years now
26:45
Speaker 7: was not going to not only not work, but it
26:48
Speaker 7: was going to aggravate me. So I had to really
26:51
Speaker 7: change out all of my skincare. And that's when I
26:53
Speaker 7: created the brand, because I wanted to have something that
26:56
Speaker 7: was ultra hydrating and good for sensitive skin.
27:01
Speaker 4: Well, that's interesting that you say retinals, because those are
27:04
Speaker 4: specifically marketed to like aging skin quote unquote, or like
27:08
Speaker 4: fine lines and wrinkles and that sort of thing. So
27:10
Speaker 4: it's like right at the same time that you're having
27:12
Speaker 4: this thinning.
27:13
Speaker 5: Yeah, well there's retinoids.
27:14
Speaker 7: We have retinoids in our evening where which I've got
27:18
Speaker 7: to get into your hands, Chelsea, because I see you
27:20
Speaker 7: don't have it there.
27:22
Speaker 5: And yes, so that's a gentler form. Okay, that will
27:25
Speaker 5: help with fine lines.
27:26
Speaker 3: Wonderful. Were we ready for some advice questions?
27:30
Speaker 2: Are they metapause advice questions?
27:33
Speaker 1: Okay, yes, we have to curtail everything to our special guests.
27:36
Speaker 4: Yes, well, obviously like blanket statement. As Naomi mentioned, you know,
27:42
Speaker 4: there are so many different variables for everyone, so talk
27:44
Speaker 4: to your doctor.
27:45
Speaker 3: But this is just some advice from our perspectives.
27:48
Speaker 1: So that's what we'll name the episode We are not Doctors, Diomi.
27:53
Speaker 1: You'd you'd be surprised how many times I have to
27:55
Speaker 1: say I'm not a doctor. Also really, yes, yes, you're
27:59
Speaker 1: very super cool for your advice. I have yeah, and
28:02
Speaker 1: then I doll out unsolicited medical advice as well.
28:05
Speaker 4: Pretty typically, our first question comes from Kelsey. She says,
28:09
Speaker 4: Dear Chelsea, I'm thirty six years old and stop taking
28:12
Speaker 4: my birth control two years ago. I had taken oral
28:15
Speaker 4: birth control since I was eighteen and would skip my
28:18
Speaker 4: placebo slash cycle every two months and maybe have a
28:22
Speaker 4: period every three months. Since stopping, I've had night sweats,
28:26
Speaker 4: dry skin, acne, rotator cuff pain without injury, and Jesus Christ,
28:31
Speaker 4: the low energy is killing me. My question is if
28:34
Speaker 4: I'm in perimenopause, what kind of supplements and skincare should
28:38
Speaker 4: I use? I tried a number of lotions and washes
28:40
Speaker 4: and nothing seems to help my dry skin. Note I
28:43
Speaker 4: have not been officially diagnosed with perimenopause.
28:45
Speaker 3: I'd like to be tested, but I work.
28:47
Speaker 4: In the medical field CMA, and I feel like getting
28:50
Speaker 4: tested or asking for help is pointless because there isn't
28:53
Speaker 4: much treatment from the MD perspective.
28:55
Speaker 3: With so much love, Kelcey.
28:57
Speaker 2: Hi, Kelcey Hi, Hello, Hi.
29:00
Speaker 1: This is our special guest, Naomi Watts, who just wrote
29:03
Speaker 1: a book called Dare I Say It, which is all
29:05
Speaker 1: about menopause. So you're in good hands today. So you're
29:09
Speaker 1: thirty six, right? Is that what you said, thirty six.
29:12
Speaker 8: Yeah, I just turned thirty six.
29:13
Speaker 1: That's how old Naomi was when she discovered. She was
29:16
Speaker 1: going exactly my age.
29:18
Speaker 7: Yeah, when I started having the symptoms, well, actually i'd
29:22
Speaker 7: had night sweats for a number of years, and I
29:25
Speaker 7: had migraines and irregular periods. I did have blood work done,
29:29
Speaker 7: and you're right, it's there's no one exact defining test
29:34
Speaker 7: except for if you've had a full year without a menstruation.
29:41
Speaker 5: But I think there are lots of other indicators.
29:44
Speaker 1: Like but there's also there's also a urine test that
29:46
Speaker 1: you can do that doctor Nigma told me about called
29:48
Speaker 1: the Dutch test.
29:49
Speaker 2: Naomi, do you know about that one?
29:51
Speaker 5: I don't. I heard that Clear Blue is doing one
29:54
Speaker 5: now as well.
29:55
Speaker 2: Yeah, there's something work.
29:57
Speaker 1: There's something called the Dutch test, and it requires you
29:59
Speaker 1: to like pee on this little stick like three or
30:01
Speaker 1: four times from like in a twelve hour period, and
30:05
Speaker 1: that they say is a better indicator than blood work
30:07
Speaker 1: will like indicate when you come back.
30:09
Speaker 2: Yeah, so you might want to look into that too.
30:13
Speaker 3: I've never heard of that.
30:14
Speaker 7: Yeah, the rotator cuff thing, I had a frozen shoulder.
30:18
Speaker 7: Many of my friends have had that and that can
30:21
Speaker 7: be very painful, particularly when you're sleeping. But you're in
30:25
Speaker 7: the medical field, I would say, can you talk to
30:28
Speaker 7: your colleagues, can you get some I mean, this is
30:30
Speaker 7: the thing is that it's so many doctors were not
30:34
Speaker 7: even trained in this area, specifically guynecologists. I've done panels
30:41
Speaker 7: and symposiums and with a great number of fancy doctors
30:46
Speaker 7: and they talk about their one hour specific lecture centering
30:52
Speaker 7: around menopause. It's mind boggling considering half the population will
30:56
Speaker 7: go through it. So I would just try and peace
31:00
Speaker 7: together all of your symptoms and go to your doctor
31:04
Speaker 7: and ask them what they think is best based on
31:07
Speaker 7: your medical history.
31:09
Speaker 1: And also frozen shoulder for that specifically, Like I've had
31:12
Speaker 1: a lot of conversations around this recently because I had
31:15
Speaker 1: shoulder issues and I thought maybe that was what I have,
31:17
Speaker 1: but I had an infection in my shoulder, so it
31:19
Speaker 1: wasn't give us me by a doctor who shall rename
31:22
Speaker 1: nameless for now until.
31:23
Speaker 2: I decided to blow his gasket.
31:26
Speaker 1: But frozen shoulder, I've had a lot of conversations about that,
31:29
Speaker 1: And you want to treat that like you would treat
31:31
Speaker 1: a shoulder in physical therapy. Like you really want to
31:34
Speaker 1: keep mobilizing it, You really want to keep moving that
31:37
Speaker 1: and just kind of doing daily exercises to increase mobility
31:41
Speaker 1: because the less you use it, the worse you're going
31:43
Speaker 1: to be.
31:44
Speaker 7: So that motion is lotion it needs. So basically, we
31:48
Speaker 7: have estrogen receptors all over our bodies, and you know
31:52
Speaker 7: that's what happens there. It just kind of locks up.
31:55
Speaker 5: And Chelsea's right.
31:56
Speaker 7: I was doing a lot of PT and I did
32:01
Speaker 7: suffer through it for a good year. Eventually I did
32:04
Speaker 7: something that I didn't want to do, but I ended
32:06
Speaker 7: up having to do it because the pain was too excruciating.
32:09
Speaker 7: I ended up having a cortisone shot and just giving
32:13
Speaker 7: it some relief was really helpful. And then I did
32:16
Speaker 7: hardcore PT, you know, grabbing a towel or a band
32:19
Speaker 7: and going up above your head and down and forward.
32:23
Speaker 7: That was really good. And you know, like car wash
32:26
Speaker 7: kind of round and round those kind of things to
32:30
Speaker 7: just increase mobility.
32:31
Speaker 2: And did you did that cortizone shot? That helped? Right,
32:34
Speaker 2: That gave you.
32:34
Speaker 5: Something really really helped.
32:37
Speaker 7: And it has not come back since and I'm knocking
32:40
Speaker 7: on word bit that has been a game changer.
32:43
Speaker 5: For me.
32:44
Speaker 8: Yeah, that's good to know. I ended up getting quartersoone
32:46
Speaker 8: shots too, because oh you did.
32:48
Speaker 1: Yeah.
32:49
Speaker 8: I did physical therapy for a long time, and even
32:51
Speaker 8: my physical therapist doctor was like, I don't know.
32:54
Speaker 3: Really what else to do for you.
32:56
Speaker 8: But I didn't think about doing PT after that because
32:59
Speaker 8: now it doesn't hurt so much, I might be able
33:01
Speaker 8: to like move it.
33:02
Speaker 2: Yeah, and that's also that's also the thing.
33:04
Speaker 1: When it doesn't hurt is the most important time to
33:07
Speaker 1: keep it up, you know what, I mean, to keep
33:10
Speaker 1: just that mobility going because like that, I don't know.
33:13
Speaker 1: I've talked to so many pets about frozen shoulder because
33:16
Speaker 1: it's my obsession since reading Naomi's book. I read Naomi's
33:20
Speaker 1: book and just had every symptom that she described like out.
33:23
Speaker 1: I'm like, and then I came back and I was
33:25
Speaker 1: like having night flashes. And I told my sister, I'm like,
33:27
Speaker 1: I'm having night flashes. And I tried this other over
33:29
Speaker 1: the counter stuff before Naomi you sent me this, and
33:32
Speaker 1: I was like, and they worked for my night sweats.
33:34
Speaker 2: And my sister's like, you are so you're so impressionable.
33:38
Speaker 1: She's like, you read a book about metopause. Then you
33:40
Speaker 1: decide you have metopause and then you cure it in
33:43
Speaker 1: one day with this.
33:44
Speaker 2: Over the counter drug.
33:45
Speaker 5: You are on it.
33:46
Speaker 1: I know I'm on it, but yeah, So the frozen
33:49
Speaker 1: shoulder thing is like, you really want to stay on
33:51
Speaker 1: that because it's when you ignore it or when you're
33:53
Speaker 1: in so much pain that you lose your mobility that
33:55
Speaker 1: you kind of can get stuck.
33:56
Speaker 2: So you want to stay on that too. And yeah,
33:58
Speaker 2: inquire about that Dutch test. That's very interesting. I haven't
34:02
Speaker 2: heard that because you know.
34:04
Speaker 8: You have like hormone level checks, but if they're not off,
34:07
Speaker 8: and it's kind of like, well.
34:08
Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah.
34:09
Speaker 7: The thing is is the hormone checks can change every
34:12
Speaker 7: single day. Yeah, they that's why they don't find them
34:15
Speaker 7: completely reliable because yeah.
34:18
Speaker 1: And a Dutch test, I think that was for my
34:20
Speaker 1: natura path So if you like look that up online,
34:23
Speaker 1: I'm sure you can order one, because you know, yeah,
34:25
Speaker 1: it's like your blood levels. They don't like you could
34:29
Speaker 1: be on your period and get them, or you could
34:31
Speaker 1: be two weeks into your cycle, which are going to
34:33
Speaker 1: have completely different results. So I think that's why they're
34:36
Speaker 1: not accurate. And we live in LA so we have
34:38
Speaker 1: doctors that are just willing to dole out anything at
34:40
Speaker 1: any moment for anything, you know. So it's like you
34:45
Speaker 1: don't really know what's working sometimes because I know, for me,
34:48
Speaker 1: I'm just taking so many different things, whether it's peptides
34:50
Speaker 1: or anti aging stuff.
34:52
Speaker 2: It's like I'm not sure what's working. I just know
34:54
Speaker 2: something is.
34:55
Speaker 7: Yeah, it's all.
34:56
Speaker 4: Now for someone like Kelsey who you know, maybe you're
34:59
Speaker 4: not getting the help that you need from your current doctor,
35:02
Speaker 4: your current obgyn. What are the sort of things that
35:05
Speaker 4: she should be looking for in a specialist?
35:07
Speaker 7: Okay, so I think at a minimum, if the doctor
35:11
Speaker 7: is not willing to give you a full spectrum of
35:16
Speaker 7: what's available, if that conversation is not if he's blocking
35:20
Speaker 7: he or she's blocking that conversation, then that's not the
35:23
Speaker 7: right doctor. I think you have to go in with
35:26
Speaker 7: your list of symptoms, your list of questions, your medical history,
35:31
Speaker 7: and your families and if they're just flat out gatekeeping,
35:36
Speaker 7: then then it might not be the right provider. And
35:39
Speaker 7: it's a bummer to have to change because I know
35:41
Speaker 7: that takes works, work. But you can go on the
35:44
Speaker 7: Menopause Society and look for a doctor that's suitable in
35:48
Speaker 7: your area. And also there was a great article in
35:51
Speaker 7: the New York Times by Susan Dominus to two or
35:54
Speaker 7: three years ago called women have been Misled, and that
35:59
Speaker 7: is she goes really deep into the whole experience of
36:05
Speaker 7: treatment and how we've been misled because there was a
36:09
Speaker 7: study that went wrong in the media got ahead of
36:12
Speaker 7: the study, and basically everyone feared hormones for that from
36:16
Speaker 7: that day forward. Now, of course they're not going to
36:18
Speaker 7: be everyone's choice, nor are they safe for everyone, but
36:22
Speaker 7: they should not be ruled out. If you are in
36:26
Speaker 7: need of symptom relief and you're it's safe for you.
36:30
Speaker 7: So you do have to trust your doctor. You do
36:33
Speaker 7: have to make sure they're hearing you.
36:36
Speaker 8: Yeah, that's the way. We do have a natural path
36:38
Speaker 8: in town. I was actually thinking about.
36:40
Speaker 1: Yeah, I think nature paths have a better vibe on
36:43
Speaker 1: menopause than medical doctors, you know what I mean. Sometimes
36:47
Speaker 1: I mean not overall speaking, but like until we have menopause,
36:50
Speaker 1: specialists like naturopaths seem to have some better kind of elixir.
36:55
Speaker 7: There are some specialists it's like her md Alloy Midi Health. Ever,
37:01
Speaker 7: now these are all available, you know, they're not. That's
37:06
Speaker 7: telehealth places so I think we're up to navigating it.
37:12
Speaker 7: It's a bummer that we have to do a lot
37:13
Speaker 7: of it on our own, but I think the change
37:16
Speaker 7: is only just started and it'll be better for the
37:20
Speaker 7: next generation. But there's still a lot of work we
37:24
Speaker 7: have to do in order to get the right support
37:26
Speaker 7: and treatment that we need.
37:28
Speaker 8: I totally agree, because I feel like all my symptoms
37:30
Speaker 8: are like, oh, well, you know, try this or that,
37:33
Speaker 8: and I'm like, but when you add them all up,
37:35
Speaker 8: it come out and yeah, a good amount of these
37:39
Speaker 8: specific kinds.
37:40
Speaker 1: And it's also you have to understand, like you have
37:42
Speaker 1: to trust yourself and understand that you know how your
37:44
Speaker 1: body feels and if it feels off or if it
37:47
Speaker 1: feels regulated. Yeah, And like when we talk to other
37:49
Speaker 1: people sometimes that there's like this placebo effect of like, oh, well,
37:53
Speaker 1: they said, it's not this.
37:54
Speaker 2: It's like, you have to know your body.
37:56
Speaker 1: You're in the medical industry, be like, sit with yourself
37:59
Speaker 1: and actually feel what you're feeling, and you'll know, Okay,
38:02
Speaker 1: this doesn't feel right. I do want to do something
38:04
Speaker 1: about this, you know, regardless of what other people's opinions are.
38:09
Speaker 5: Have you considered HRT or have you mentioned it with
38:12
Speaker 5: your doctor. I know you said you were on birth control.
38:16
Speaker 2: I have.
38:17
Speaker 8: I haven't talked about any hormone replacement yet. I was
38:21
Speaker 8: actually even recently kind of thinking about going back on
38:24
Speaker 8: birth control. But I don't really want.
38:27
Speaker 5: To do that right right, Well, I mean, I know
38:30
Speaker 5: what you're saying, is Chelsea, that natural paths.
38:33
Speaker 7: There are lots of things available, and you get you know,
38:36
Speaker 7: it feels like you're getting a lot of focus. But
38:39
Speaker 7: I personally go for the FDA approved way because it
38:45
Speaker 7: just feels it feels certain and you know, things have
38:48
Speaker 7: been tested and but again it's it's got to be
38:51
Speaker 7: your choice. It's your body and obviously what's safe for you.
38:57
Speaker 3: All right, well, thank you, Kelsey.
38:58
Speaker 4: Will you report back in a few months and let
39:00
Speaker 4: us know if there's any any change.
39:02
Speaker 3: Yes, that sounds good.
39:03
Speaker 1: I will, all right, yes, report back and let us
39:05
Speaker 1: know if you get pregnant.
39:07
Speaker 2: We're interested.
39:08
Speaker 8: No, not whatsoever.
39:11
Speaker 1: I have a good day, Thank you, Thank you, Kelsey.
39:15
Speaker 1: I mean, just the irony of this woman working in
39:17
Speaker 1: a hospital calling into a podcast asking us about menopause
39:21
Speaker 1: is just like it's like.
39:24
Speaker 2: Hospital, you can't even get in a straight answer.
39:26
Speaker 4: Yeah, And I wonder if she does see a natural path,
39:29
Speaker 4: if they might suggest an MD that they, you know,
39:32
Speaker 4: have worked with, or that sort of thing too.
39:34
Speaker 3: So yeah, well.
39:36
Speaker 4: Our next caller is Karen and a little bit of
39:39
Speaker 4: a little bit of a to Phil and Naomian. A
39:42
Speaker 4: little while back, we had someone call in that was
39:44
Speaker 4: so annoyed that their friend kept sniffing constantly.
39:47
Speaker 3: Do you remember this?
39:48
Speaker 4: Like, oh, like they were sniffing, sniffing, sniffing, and they're like,
39:51
Speaker 4: how do I tell my friend to stop sniffing?
39:53
Speaker 3: I've tried. It's upsetting. It's a whole thing, a whole
39:56
Speaker 3: a whole thing.
39:57
Speaker 2: Is this kind of are we going to find out
39:58
Speaker 2: this is a symptom of menopause?
40:00
Speaker 3: Well we'll see, because.
40:01
Speaker 1: Wait, I just edited my next I just edited my
40:04
Speaker 1: stand up special and I was sniffing throughout the whole thing,
40:09
Speaker 1: and I was like, why am I sniffling this whole time?
40:11
Speaker 2: I see how I do like a coke head?
40:13
Speaker 1: And then and my manager goes, can you lift out
40:16
Speaker 1: the sniffling? And I was like, I just gave them
40:19
Speaker 1: that note too. I'm like, I don't know. I must
40:21
Speaker 1: have had a cold. And I'm like, do I do
40:22
Speaker 1: that all the time without knowlash well.
40:25
Speaker 4: Karen says, Dear Chelsea, of all the things I've wanted
40:30
Speaker 4: to write in and ask about my forty eight year
40:32
Speaker 4: old perimontopause symptoms, et cetera. Here I am responding to
40:36
Speaker 4: a recent POT episode about a friend's annoying sniffing. It's me,
40:40
Speaker 4: not literally, and I'm not snorting any drugs. I don't
40:43
Speaker 4: have seasonal allergies. I have inner ear congestion, and the
40:47
Speaker 4: sniffing helps clear my ears. I've caught myself doing it,
40:50
Speaker 4: and I annoy myself. I've even seen myself in videos
40:53
Speaker 4: doing it. I can't imagine what people think. I've seen
40:57
Speaker 4: at least two doctors, and they couldn't help no amount
40:59
Speaker 4: of decongestic's work. I feel like I'm underwater. I feel
41:04
Speaker 4: for these two friends, the sniffer and the sniffy, which
41:07
Speaker 4: got me thinking I have a host of seemingly random
41:11
Speaker 4: symptoms in addition to the sniffing. I'm exhausted, I have headaches,
41:14
Speaker 4: and I constantly feel like my head is in a
41:16
Speaker 4: fish bowl. My periods have changed, and I'm back on
41:19
Speaker 4: birth control to help with the heavy flow. I find
41:22
Speaker 4: myself wondering if it's something serious, But could it just
41:24
Speaker 4: be menopause?
41:25
Speaker 3: XO, Karen, I don't know.
41:28
Speaker 1: Ni Hi Hi, Karen, Hi. Welcome to Dear Chelsea. This
41:32
Speaker 1: is Naomi wats our special guest today.
41:35
Speaker 6: Thank you so much for having me.
41:37
Speaker 5: Yeah.
41:37
Speaker 7: I mean, look, as far as I've been told, I
41:41
Speaker 7: knew that fertility changes off to thirty five.
41:44
Speaker 5: But what I.
41:45
Speaker 7: Didn't know is that you can experience perimenopause symptoms right
41:49
Speaker 7: from then onwards. And certainly in my case, that's what
41:53
Speaker 7: was going on. So it sounds like with the with
41:57
Speaker 7: the exhaustion levels and the heavy periods. I mean, is
42:01
Speaker 7: that was that regular, the heavy periods or is it
42:03
Speaker 7: just suddenly or in the last.
42:05
Speaker 6: It was new and it was so uncomfortable. I didn't
42:08
Speaker 6: want to leave my house and I went to my
42:10
Speaker 6: doctor to make sure everything was okay, and then I
42:14
Speaker 6: ended up going back on birth control pill and it helped.
42:18
Speaker 6: But there's so much stigma around the birth control pill.
42:23
Speaker 2: Why is that? Why is there so much stigma around
42:25
Speaker 2: birth control? Naomi? Do you know that?
42:28
Speaker 7: Yeah?
42:28
Speaker 5: They shouldn't be. Let's put it that way.
42:30
Speaker 1: Is it just such an adjustment when you get off
42:32
Speaker 1: of it? Is that the downside of it?
42:34
Speaker 7: I was on the birth control for gosh maybe and
42:38
Speaker 7: you know, of course, when I wasn't getting pregnant, I thought, oh,
42:40
Speaker 7: is it because I was on it for too long?
42:42
Speaker 7: But no, I don't. I don't think it was related
42:45
Speaker 7: at all. It's probably a big adjustment. How long did
42:49
Speaker 7: you say that you haven't been on.
42:50
Speaker 6: It for Well, I was on it for probably fifteen years,
42:55
Speaker 6: and I got pregnant like two months after I stopped
42:58
Speaker 6: with my first daughter, when I wanted to start a family,
43:02
Speaker 6: and then I went back on it, and when I
43:04
Speaker 6: wanted to have when I had my second daughter, and
43:06
Speaker 6: the same thing, I was able to get pregnant right away,
43:09
Speaker 6: and then after her I was like, oh maybe I
43:11
Speaker 6: should you know, do I have to give my body
43:13
Speaker 6: a break from it or you know. So I was
43:16
Speaker 6: off it for five years until just like fourteen months
43:21
Speaker 6: ago when I went in. I was like, this is miserable.
43:25
Speaker 6: I was getting like really bad headaches. And when I
43:27
Speaker 6: was young, I was like the only one of my
43:29
Speaker 6: friends that like took it. I'm very type A, so
43:31
Speaker 6: I was so good at taking it and it made
43:33
Speaker 6: my period like three days very light. I had a
43:37
Speaker 6: lot of friends that said be careful. You know that's
43:40
Speaker 6: not good for you. But here I am on it
43:42
Speaker 6: and it's helping me. But there was something in the
43:44
Speaker 6: back of my head like am I hurting myself? Like
43:46
Speaker 6: you know it's hard. Now.
43:48
Speaker 7: Look, I think HRT, as I understand it, lower levels
43:53
Speaker 7: of estrogen. So if you want to go to if
43:57
Speaker 7: you ask your doctor if it's safe for you, that
44:00
Speaker 7: would be maybe better for you. I mean, people stay
44:05
Speaker 7: on HRT till the very very end, you know. I
44:09
Speaker 7: know people that are in their seventies still taking it.
44:13
Speaker 7: So the old messaging about oh, you're only supposed to
44:17
Speaker 7: be on it for a certain amount of time, certain
44:19
Speaker 7: the lower dose, the least amount of time, that's old.
44:23
Speaker 7: That's old education right there. So I think you should
44:27
Speaker 7: maybe investigate. If you want to get your regular periods
44:31
Speaker 7: under control, you should investigate that.
44:32
Speaker 5: I sound like I'm pushing HRT on everyone.
44:35
Speaker 1: No, Buthow, I don't think so. I think that is
44:38
Speaker 1: exactly what you're dealing with right now. It sounds like
44:41
Speaker 1: you're going through early perimenopause.
44:44
Speaker 2: Yeah.
44:44
Speaker 5: I feel like it's just really helped me. And it's very.
44:49
Speaker 7: Confusing because this study that went wrong put the fear
44:54
Speaker 7: of God in not only women who were taking it
44:57
Speaker 7: and they literally flushed their hormones down the toilet, but
45:01
Speaker 7: doctors started doing the same thing.
45:03
Speaker 5: And that was it. They were They just stopped the research.
45:07
Speaker 1: But you're talking about the article that came out that's
45:09
Speaker 1: saying it caused cancer, right, yes, exactly, that it was
45:13
Speaker 1: leading to breast cancer.
45:14
Speaker 7: And this was in two thousand and two, and this
45:16
Speaker 7: is like more than twenty years ago now and we're
45:18
Speaker 7: still dealing with the fear of what happened there. I
45:23
Speaker 7: would say, look at the Menopause Society. That is a
45:26
Speaker 7: great website that it leads you to doctors and all
45:29
Speaker 7: kinds of education and get your.
45:32
Speaker 5: Symptoms under control.
45:33
Speaker 7: And the sniffing thing that that So that tell me
45:38
Speaker 7: more about this.
45:41
Speaker 6: You know. I I I had this. I had a
45:45
Speaker 6: doctor looking He's like, oh, yeah, it looks like you
45:47
Speaker 6: got some fluid in your inner inner ear.
45:49
Speaker 2: You know.
45:50
Speaker 6: Takes some decongestics, which I love taking. Honestly, I understand
45:53
Speaker 6: why they make them in the mess but or use
45:57
Speaker 6: them in math, but sometimes it wouldn't work. And so
46:00
Speaker 6: like I do this like this kind of like big
46:02
Speaker 6: sniff because it clears my ear. So I was taking
46:05
Speaker 6: a video of like bees in my garden, and I
46:07
Speaker 6: was watching the video back and I could hear myself
46:09
Speaker 6: and I'm like, oh my gosh, it's terrible. And then
46:11
Speaker 6: I hear the episode and I'm like, oh, I wish
46:15
Speaker 6: Chelsea could tell me, like, not that off, but it's
46:19
Speaker 6: really If I don't do it, then the congestion kind
46:22
Speaker 6: of builds and then I'm like leading my head over
46:24
Speaker 6: and people like what are you doing? And I just
46:27
Speaker 6: kind of wonder if it's just.
46:30
Speaker 2: Kind of well.
46:30
Speaker 6: Also, my ears would like they ring sometimes and then
46:34
Speaker 6: they started well tonight.
46:35
Speaker 7: Is is definitely a symptom. And I've definitely been there
46:39
Speaker 7: with sticking my fingers so far down my ear that
46:43
Speaker 7: I look like like because I.
46:46
Speaker 6: Started itching, and I'm like, I'm literally turning into a bitch.
46:49
Speaker 2: Yes, I feel like you need to go to a
46:51
Speaker 2: hormone doctor.
46:52
Speaker 1: I think you should go get some testing done, not
46:55
Speaker 1: just blood work, like to ask for the urine test,
46:58
Speaker 1: ask to just.
46:58
Speaker 2: Test all your level at the right time of.
47:01
Speaker 1: The month, like track when you're going to be in
47:03
Speaker 1: mid cycle or whenever. The most optimal time for hormone testing.
47:07
Speaker 7: Is forty eight is around the exact age for all
47:10
Speaker 7: of those symptoms to be taking place. And it's the
47:13
Speaker 7: not knowing what's going on with your body, the feeling
47:17
Speaker 7: of like, wait, I this didn't used to work like this.
47:21
Speaker 7: That kind of period, the transitional period from perimenopause through
47:25
Speaker 7: to that menopause day, which is one year after you've
47:28
Speaker 7: had your last menstrual cycle. You know that that is
47:32
Speaker 7: a confusing time. So I would definitely try to get
47:37
Speaker 7: in front of your doctor, a doctor that you trust.
47:40
Speaker 6: Yeah, I need to.
47:41
Speaker 1: And you have to advocate for yourself in these situations,
47:44
Speaker 1: Like you have to be a little bit more pushy
47:46
Speaker 1: and a little bit more you know, bold than you
47:48
Speaker 1: might feel comfortable with. But no one's going to advocate
47:51
Speaker 1: for yourself better than you are. So, like you want answers,
47:54
Speaker 1: especially with your nose and your pressure and your ear situation,
47:57
Speaker 1: Like you need to go to an E and T
47:59
Speaker 1: and go what is this and what can I do
48:01
Speaker 1: about it? There's got to be some solution out there
48:03
Speaker 1: that can at least abate the symptoms to a degree,
48:06
Speaker 1: you know, Like, so you're not feeling pressure in your ear,
48:09
Speaker 1: whether those are ear drops or what you know whatever,
48:12
Speaker 1: Like there are answers out there, but you kind of sometimes,
48:15
Speaker 1: especially with this, as Naomi has demonstrated, you really have
48:18
Speaker 1: to push and be pushy to get answers. You know,
48:22
Speaker 1: women's health is not a priority for anyone in the
48:25
Speaker 1: history of the world, so we have to make it
48:28
Speaker 1: a priority. And you have to go in there and
48:30
Speaker 1: ask for answers and demand to get them. And if
48:33
Speaker 1: you don't get them from a certain doctor, then you
48:34
Speaker 1: have to change doctors. And that can be an exhaustive process,
48:38
Speaker 1: but it's going to be worth it in the end
48:39
Speaker 1: for you.
48:40
Speaker 5: Yes, exactly what she said.
48:42
Speaker 6: Yeah, I agree.
48:44
Speaker 2: And then we're in the meantime, we're going to rename
48:46
Speaker 2: Naomi's book to I Am Not a Doctor. Okay, do
48:53
Speaker 2: you feel better equipped?
48:54
Speaker 1: You just needed a little bit motivational speaking, motivational push right.
48:57
Speaker 6: Here, I think.
48:58
Speaker 2: Yeah, we'll be as squeaky Karen.
49:00
Speaker 6: Yeah, well, my name's Karen.
49:03
Speaker 2: I know, live up to your potential, don't worry. That's
49:07
Speaker 2: that's the name. That's my alias.
49:08
Speaker 1: I have to travel with an alias, like when I'm
49:10
Speaker 1: in hotels and stuff.
49:11
Speaker 2: I don't have to, I choose to, but M Karen.
49:13
Speaker 1: Is my alias, and everyone thinks that's the funniest thing
49:15
Speaker 1: that my name is Karen. She's sitting right here, so
49:19
Speaker 1: we're sisters.
49:21
Speaker 5: Hilarious.
49:22
Speaker 6: All right, thank you so much.
49:23
Speaker 2: Bye, take care of thank you.
49:26
Speaker 1: Bye.
49:27
Speaker 4: All right, we just have a couple more minutes, so
49:28
Speaker 4: we'll take a quick break and come back to wrap up.
49:31
Speaker 1: Okay, we'll take a break and we'll be right back
49:33
Speaker 1: to wrap up with Naomi.
49:38
Speaker 2: And we're back with Naomi.
49:39
Speaker 1: Watts, who's written this new book called Dare I Say It,
49:42
Speaker 1: which every woman should read and most men should read too,
49:45
Speaker 1: quite frankly, so you can understand what women are going
49:47
Speaker 1: through since you guys don't really have to go through
49:48
Speaker 1: fucking anything except getting us pregnant. And there's a quote
49:51
Speaker 1: for there's even a blurb for me on the back.
49:53
Speaker 1: I hear a man laughing in the background.
49:55
Speaker 7: Ha ha ha.
49:56
Speaker 5: He goes ha ha ha ha.
49:58
Speaker 2: To show us what you go through. Moved to us
50:00
Speaker 2: what you're dealing with.
50:01
Speaker 1: I was always like, Oh, what's what's something embarrassing that
50:04
Speaker 1: a man has to deal with? Like periods we can't
50:06
Speaker 1: control when we get them. We could be on a plane,
50:09
Speaker 1: bleed out through clothing. I've told the story of meeting
50:12
Speaker 1: my sister on Safari after she was on a plane
50:14
Speaker 1: in like bled for seventeen hours and she had she's
50:17
Speaker 1: luckily she had those zip Safari pants that I had
50:20
Speaker 1: sent her as a joke that she had zipped off
50:23
Speaker 1: and then taken her and taken them and wrapped them
50:25
Speaker 1: around her waist. And I was like, God, what is
50:27
Speaker 1: comparable to like the woman's humiliation of getting our periods
50:31
Speaker 1: in school and in public places? And then I was like, oh,
50:35
Speaker 1: boners like those are embarrassing, But a boner, it's like, first,
50:39
Speaker 1: yeah you can, I mean unless it's a really big one,
50:42
Speaker 1: But I mean that's embarrassing for your boner to get
50:45
Speaker 1: hard all of a sudden, because then everyone knows exactly
50:47
Speaker 1: what you're thinking, you know. But also it's just like
50:51
Speaker 1: that's that also could be argued, you know what I mean.
50:53
Speaker 1: There's no evidence with a period, there's evidence with it,
50:56
Speaker 1: Like with a boner, there's no evidence, like you just see,
51:00
Speaker 1: you think you see something and someone can kind of
51:02
Speaker 1: push it away. But yeah, I can't think of anything
51:04
Speaker 1: that men go through that is comparable to all of
51:07
Speaker 1: the levels of pain, childbirth, child rearing, all of it,
51:13
Speaker 1: and then a menopause on top of it.
51:16
Speaker 5: So we have to educate them.
51:17
Speaker 7: We have to bring them into the conversation and say,
51:20
Speaker 7: this is what's going on. And I find that most times,
51:24
Speaker 7: if they're included into the conversation, they don't have to
51:27
Speaker 7: like imagine what's going on and nothing's a mystery. Then
51:30
Speaker 7: they will want to help, They will want to be empathetic.
51:34
Speaker 7: They just need greater understanding, and sadly that's our job
51:38
Speaker 7: to make them understand. But you know, again, this is
51:42
Speaker 7: the changes happening in real time.
51:45
Speaker 5: Then I'm certain that this is not going to be
51:48
Speaker 5: the case. For the next generation.
51:50
Speaker 7: Everything will be more normalized and humanized, and it'll be
51:54
Speaker 7: something that everyone knows how to talk to. You know,
51:58
Speaker 7: we can talk to our children and say, Mummy having
52:00
Speaker 7: a bad day. I didn't mean to snap, you know,
52:03
Speaker 7: And this is why, you know hormonal shifts. Just like
52:07
Speaker 7: when a teenager slams the door in your face, we
52:10
Speaker 7: know what that's about and we empathize. So we've got
52:14
Speaker 7: to bring everyone into the conversation. We have to tell
52:17
Speaker 7: our bosses at work. If you know you're suddenly in
52:19
Speaker 7: a boardroom meeting and you know you're doing a power
52:23
Speaker 7: point with ten men and you have a memory blip
52:27
Speaker 7: when you forget something that kind of suddenly unravels the
52:30
Speaker 7: whole meeting.
52:32
Speaker 5: That can happen. I've heard countless.
52:34
Speaker 7: Stories of women, you know, which can lead to greater
52:38
Speaker 7: anxiety and retreating. And you know, nobody understands what's going
52:44
Speaker 7: on until you tell them. And so if we bring
52:47
Speaker 7: them in and say, hey, this is what's happening. I'm
52:50
Speaker 7: going to need a few hours, or I'm going to
52:52
Speaker 7: need a day, they can adjust and.
52:55
Speaker 5: Figure out how to behave hopefully.
52:57
Speaker 3: I love that.
52:58
Speaker 1: I want to say, Naomi, really proud and impressed by
53:01
Speaker 1: you for bringing this subject to the four and the
53:03
Speaker 1: way that you have. And I really want to say, like,
53:06
Speaker 1: especially in our industry, because I have so many friends
53:09
Speaker 1: that have gone through menopause before me, who were very
53:13
Speaker 1: loathed to even admit that that was an issue, who
53:16
Speaker 1: are very secretive about it. Like, I really feel like
53:19
Speaker 1: this is the dawn of a new era and you
53:21
Speaker 1: are someone who can really be credited with bringing that
53:25
Speaker 1: conversation forward. So thank you for doing that for women
53:29
Speaker 1: and for doing that for people within this industry to
53:32
Speaker 1: make people more comfortable with the idea of talking about
53:35
Speaker 1: it and not being so ashamed at getting older, like
53:38
Speaker 1: it doesn't have to be a dirty word.
53:40
Speaker 2: It doesn't have to be a dirty thing.
53:42
Speaker 1: And I think by welcoming men into these conversations as well,
53:46
Speaker 1: it's just another opportunity to get more educated for all
53:49
Speaker 1: of us.
53:50
Speaker 5: Exactly exactly, Yeah, it was.
53:54
Speaker 7: It had to happen, and I'm glad to be a
53:57
Speaker 7: part of it, and along with a lot of other people.
54:00
Speaker 7: It's all things coming from every angle. All the doctors
54:03
Speaker 7: now who genuinely want to care for people, who are
54:07
Speaker 7: coming together and making sure the conversation is not only open,
54:11
Speaker 7: but the treatment is available. And we need to optimize
54:15
Speaker 7: our health because if you don't get your health under
54:18
Speaker 7: control at this point in time, it can lead to
54:21
Speaker 7: other issues later. We're living longer, so we need to
54:25
Speaker 7: stay strong and that means, you know, protecting our bones
54:29
Speaker 7: and things. I've seen you do it, Chelsea. You're lifting
54:34
Speaker 7: weights that right, that's what you do, and that's protecting
54:38
Speaker 7: your bone health.
54:39
Speaker 5: And you know there's.
54:41
Speaker 7: So many We don't want to be fragile, No, I
54:44
Speaker 7: know that's exactly right.
54:46
Speaker 1: We don't want to be fragile. We don't want to
54:48
Speaker 1: be feeble, we want to be strong enough to take
54:50
Speaker 1: care of ourselves right to the end. Yeah, so, thank
54:53
Speaker 1: you Naomi. Congratulations on your book. And her product line
