Latest / Gil I Am / Billy Graham On Marriage
Transcript
- 0:05Speaker 1: From our archives, the Billy Graham classics.
- 0:08Speaker 2: Now tonight I want to talk on the subject of
- 0:11Speaker 2: the home, how to save your.
- 0:13Speaker 3: Marriage, how to have a happy home.
- 0:16Speaker 2: Now, many of these servicemen here haven't gotten married yet,
- 0:20Speaker 2: but they come from homes and they're looking forward someday
- 0:23Speaker 2: to having a home. So you can listen with interest
- 0:27Speaker 2: as well, because every man and every woman is interested
- 0:31Speaker 2: in the home and the problems involved in the home today.
- 0:36Speaker 2: And our text is found in Matthew the nineteenth chapter,
- 0:40Speaker 2: beginning at verse three these words. The Pharisees also came
- 0:46Speaker 2: unto him, tempting him and saying unto him, is it
- 0:50Speaker 2: lawful for a man to.
- 0:51Speaker 3: Put away his wife? For every cause?
- 0:54Speaker 2: And the unset and said into them, have you not
- 0:58Speaker 2: read that he which made them at the beginning made
- 1:00Speaker 2: the male and female? And said, for this cause, shall
- 1:05Speaker 2: a man leave his father and mother, and shall cleave
- 1:08Speaker 2: to his wife, And the twain shall be one flesh.
- 1:13Speaker 2: Wherefore they are no more twain but one flesh.
- 1:17Speaker 3: What therefore God hath joined together?
- 1:20Speaker 2: Let not man for asunder is your marriage successful?
- 1:26Speaker 3: Is your home happy?
- 1:28Speaker 2: Is your home free from tension that possesses so many homes? Today, Oh,
- 1:35Speaker 2: is your home turmoil and strife? Why is it a
- 1:38Speaker 2: broken home? Why is it a home about to break up?
- 1:41Speaker 2: One out of every four American marriages breaks up. But
- 1:47Speaker 2: during the last three years, the statistics are shooting up
- 1:50Speaker 2: again after leveling off for about five years. And now
- 1:54Speaker 2: the big thing is wife swapping. And a magazine said
- 1:59Speaker 2: the other day several million couples in America practice wife swapping,
- 2:06Speaker 2: searching for happiness. And because broken homes and divorce are
- 2:14Speaker 2: now played up in so much of our mass media
- 2:19Speaker 2: that we assume that most homes are unhappy, but that's
- 2:23Speaker 2: not truth. I'm here to tell you tonight that the
- 2:26Speaker 2: majority of the American homes stay together and they are
- 2:31Speaker 2: happy homes. We only read about the bad ones, the
- 2:37Speaker 2: broken ones, the ones with turmoil and strife. Nearly all
- 2:43Speaker 2: of our domestic problems faced for the nation begin.
- 2:48Speaker 3: In the home.
- 2:50Speaker 2: We see on our screens, the riots, the crime. Where
- 2:56Speaker 2: does it begin? Most of our sociologists and criminologists tell
- 3:01Speaker 2: us it begins in the home. A nation can never
- 3:05Speaker 2: rise higher than it's home life.
- 3:09Speaker 3: And on a.
- 3:09Speaker 2: Radio network last week, they had a study of crime
- 3:12Speaker 2: in America and they said that the largest single contributor
- 3:16Speaker 2: to murder is marital turbulous, bitterness, crime, alienation, and even war.
- 3:30Speaker 3: Begins in the home.
- 3:33Speaker 2: Now, the first thing that God did after creation was
- 3:36Speaker 2: to establish the home.
- 3:39Speaker 3: He said, it's not good that man should be alone.
- 3:42Speaker 2: I will make an associate to help him.
- 3:45Speaker 3: And God created the woman to help man.
- 3:51Speaker 2: Before the government, before the church, before any other institution,
- 3:58Speaker 2: he established the home. And yet today the home in
- 4:04Speaker 2: our country is in danger. And the Bible says, if
- 4:08Speaker 2: the foundations are destroyed, what can the righteous do?
- 4:12Speaker 3: The home is the very foundation of our society.
- 4:17Speaker 2: Our men are fighting in Vietnam. Many of you men
- 4:21Speaker 2: that are sitting before me tonight will go to Vietnam
- 4:24Speaker 2: to fight. I've been in Vietnam. I've seen something of
- 4:28Speaker 2: the war there. You may have to fight on other
- 4:30Speaker 2: battlefields on other continents.
- 4:32Speaker 3: I don't know, but I know this.
- 4:37Speaker 2: That we have a battle going on at home in
- 4:40Speaker 2: America and it's being fought in the home. And if
- 4:46Speaker 2: the enemy wins the battle in our homes to break
- 4:49Speaker 2: our homes, we are not going to have anything worth
- 4:51Speaker 2: fighting for. We've got to re establish the home as
- 4:57Speaker 2: the basic unit of our society. And what are some
- 5:02Speaker 2: of the elements in a successful and happy marriage. First,
- 5:08Speaker 2: there must be a divinely ordered marriage. The Bible says,
- 5:14Speaker 2: if a house is divided against itself, that house or
- 5:17Speaker 2: that home cannot stand. The Bible says, be not unequally
- 5:22Speaker 2: yoked together with unbelievers.
- 5:24Speaker 3: Now this applies only to Christians.
- 5:28Speaker 2: If you're a Christian, we are to marry another Christian.
- 5:34Speaker 3: That's what that is said.
- 5:37Speaker 2: And in the Old Testament God said to the people, Oh,
- 5:41Speaker 2: that there was such a heart in them, that they
- 5:43Speaker 2: would fear me and keep all my commandments always, that
- 5:47Speaker 2: it might be well with them and with their children,
- 5:50Speaker 2: and that they might have happy homes forever. The fear
- 5:56Speaker 2: of the Lord, in obedience to his plans and regulations
- 6:00Speaker 2: for marriage, almost guarantees a successful marriage. And it must
- 6:05Speaker 2: begin in courtship. Start dating the right girl or the
- 6:10Speaker 2: right fellow. Have prayer together, you say, Billy, don't be
- 6:16Speaker 2: such a square.
- 6:17Speaker 3: You know, today we don't pray on dates. In fact,
- 6:20Speaker 3: they don't even call them dates anymore. Why not pray
- 6:27Speaker 3: if you're both Christians? Then, when you.
- 6:30Speaker 2: Start talking seriously, how about asking God to lead into direction.
- 6:35Speaker 2: So many marriages today on the basis of physical attraction
- 6:40Speaker 2: rather than that inner beauty of character, because I want
- 6:43Speaker 2: to tell you that physical attraction soon passes unless there's
- 6:48Speaker 2: something to back it up with called Christian character.
- 6:54Speaker 3: Yes, it has to start in courtship.
- 6:58Speaker 2: Did you know It's a very interesting thing that I
- 7:01Speaker 2: was reading the other day, something that was almost unbelievable.
- 7:04Speaker 2: It said in this a survey was taken in the
- 7:08Speaker 2: Middle West, and they could only find one divorce in
- 7:12Speaker 2: four hundred homes where the family went to church regularly
- 7:17Speaker 2: and where they read the Bible every day, and where
- 7:19Speaker 2: they had prayer in the home every day.
- 7:22Speaker 3: One divorce in four hundred. The national average is one
- 7:26Speaker 3: in four.
- 7:27Speaker 2: This indicates to me that if you go to church
- 7:30Speaker 2: and read your Bible and pray and believe in Christ
- 7:34Speaker 2: and our disciple of Christ, it's a guarantee, almost totally,
- 7:41Speaker 2: a guarantee of.
- 7:43Speaker 3: A completely successful marriage.
- 7:48Speaker 2: It seems to me that our sociologist and psychiatrist and
- 7:53Speaker 2: all of our family counselors would understand that one thing.
- 7:57Speaker 2: And if you take a survey of America, you'll find
- 8:01Speaker 2: that among those that go to church and pray and
- 8:04Speaker 2: read their Bibles and live for Christ, divorce very rarely
- 8:13Speaker 2: takes place, and sometimes it does, and sometimes.
- 8:21Speaker 3: It may be necessary.
- 8:26Speaker 2: The scripture says, in the fear of the Lord is
- 8:29Speaker 2: strong confidence, and his children shall have a place of refuge.
- 8:34Speaker 2: A girl writing to a columnist signed her letter the
- 8:38Speaker 2: other day wondering, and here's what she said. I know
- 8:41Speaker 2: this sounds rather naive, but can you tell me how
- 8:44Speaker 2: a girl decides on who she's going to marry? Do
- 8:49Speaker 2: you know what the servant of Abraham said when he
- 8:52Speaker 2: was going out to look for a wife for Isaac.
- 8:54Speaker 2: He said, I being in the way the Lord led me.
- 9:02Speaker 2: You give your life to Christ. Receive him as your
- 9:06Speaker 2: Lord and savior. Put your life in his hand. Let
- 9:11Speaker 2: him fill your heart. You will be in the way.
- 9:15Speaker 2: God will lead you to the right girl or to
- 9:18Speaker 2: the right fellow, and it'll be God's choice, because you see,
- 9:22Speaker 2: God has someone picked out just for you. If you
- 9:26Speaker 2: try to find that girl of that fella on your own,
- 9:29Speaker 2: if you're gonna make a tragic mistake, you'll get less
- 9:32Speaker 2: than God's best.
- 9:33Speaker 3: Let Him help you in picking out the right person.
- 9:38Speaker 2: Secondly, a successful marriage is one that is a daily
- 9:43Speaker 2: fidelity to the marriage vow.
- 9:46Speaker 3: You promise to be faithful till death do you part.
- 9:50Speaker 2: The Scripture has put a fence around marriage, and God
- 9:55Speaker 2: is said, thou shalalt not what is THO shall not
- 10:00Speaker 2: commit adultery. The sex sin before marriage will break down
- 10:08Speaker 2: your character and your ideals, and it will certainly jeopardize
- 10:11Speaker 2: your future marriage.
- 10:13Speaker 3: Put that down.
- 10:15Speaker 2: Sex outside of marriage is a sin according to the Bible,
- 10:20Speaker 2: not because God doesn't want you to have a good time.
- 10:25Speaker 2: It's a sin because of what it does to you psychologically,
- 10:30Speaker 2: what it does to your future marriage. And many of
- 10:34Speaker 2: our sociologists and psychiatrists are now coming to say that
- 10:37Speaker 2: that is true, the sense of guilt that it leaves,
- 10:41Speaker 2: and especially among young women. But there are many other
- 10:45Speaker 2: things that I won't go into tonight. But the Bible
- 10:48Speaker 2: says thou shalt not commit adultery.
- 10:50Speaker 3: And after your marriage and you.
- 10:53Speaker 2: Commit this sin, the Bible says it's one of the
- 10:58Speaker 2: seven deadly sins and one of the worst sins that
- 11:02Speaker 2: you can commit before God.
- 11:03Speaker 3: And the Bible says it hardens your heart toward God
- 11:06Speaker 3: more than any other sin.
- 11:10Speaker 2: If you live in that kind of a life, you
- 11:12Speaker 2: can almost put it down, you're not going to come
- 11:14Speaker 2: to Christ.
- 11:16Speaker 3: Because you hearden your heart. It's possible to come to Christ.
- 11:22Speaker 3: It's possible to come and ask his forgiveness, and he
- 11:25Speaker 3: will forgive you.
- 11:27Speaker 2: But your heart heartens, and it's hard for you to
- 11:30Speaker 2: have a relationship to God. But if you tonight are
- 11:35Speaker 2: willing to turn from that sin and give it up,
- 11:38Speaker 2: willing to break off that relationship that God condemns. Christ
- 11:43Speaker 2: died on the cross for your sins, and you can
- 11:47Speaker 2: find forgiveness and you can put your wrecked life back
- 11:51Speaker 2: together again with God's help. He will forgive you, and
- 11:56Speaker 2: you can leave here as clean and as pure as
- 11:59Speaker 2: though you had never committed a sin. But this sin
- 12:03Speaker 2: was so terrible in God's sight that in the Old
- 12:05Speaker 2: Testament he demanded the death penalty.
- 12:08Speaker 3: You know, it's very interesting to me that.
- 12:10Speaker 2: In the Old Testament, when God laid out the laws
- 12:13Speaker 2: of how society was to be regulated, there.
- 12:16Speaker 3: Was capital punishment.
- 12:18Speaker 2: And it's very interesting that capital punishment went to the
- 12:21Speaker 2: man and the woman who was caught in the act
- 12:26Speaker 2: of adultery. And God was shot wanting to show to
- 12:29Speaker 2: the world how serious the marriage vow is, because you see,
- 12:35Speaker 2: you take this vow before God.
- 12:39Speaker 3: The Bible talks about eyes full of adultery.
- 12:42Speaker 2: He then look at the bonne of woman, Jesus said,
- 12:44Speaker 2: and has lust in his heart. He is already guilty,
- 12:49Speaker 2: and Job said, I've made a covenant with my eyes.
- 12:52Speaker 3: Why should I look upon a maid.
- 12:55Speaker 2: Thirdly, a successful marriage not only has fidelity to the
- 12:59Speaker 2: marriage vow, but it's also a daily family altar. That
- 13:05Speaker 2: means having daily prayer. In Acts five, it says, and
- 13:09Speaker 2: daily in every house they cease not to teach and
- 13:12Speaker 2: preach Jesus Christ. The scripture continually talks about the church
- 13:17Speaker 2: in the house.
- 13:23Speaker 3: You had to have prayer in Bible reading in your home.
- 13:26Speaker 3: Do you have it in your home?
- 13:28Speaker 2: Do you say a blessing at the table before you eat?
- 13:32Speaker 2: Do you have a time when you get your family
- 13:34Speaker 2: together for a few minutes and you read them a
- 13:36Speaker 2: few verses and have a prayer. In our home, we
- 13:39Speaker 2: have prayer and Bible reading. We make it very brief
- 13:42Speaker 2: and very short. I've never had one of my children
- 13:46Speaker 2: rebel so far, at least against devotions in the home,
- 13:49Speaker 2: because we've tried to make it interesting. We've tried to
- 13:52Speaker 2: make it brief. And if we ever have a ministry
- 13:55Speaker 2: in and he prays too long, my little boy will
- 13:58Speaker 2: remind him right in front of all of us, to
- 14:00Speaker 2: our embarrassment, that it was a little long for the prayer.
- 14:07Speaker 2: Maybe you've never had Bible reading in prayer in your
- 14:10Speaker 2: home and you'd be a little embarrassed to talk to
- 14:12Speaker 2: your wife about it or your husband about it, and
- 14:14Speaker 2: you don't know how.
- 14:14Speaker 3: To bring it up. It's sort of an embarrassing subject.
- 14:17Speaker 3: And you know, I've never understood that.
- 14:18Speaker 2: Why it's embarrassing to talk about the King of Kings
- 14:21Speaker 2: and the Lord of Lord? Is it embarrassing to talk
- 14:25Speaker 2: about the Queen of England? Is it embarrassing to talk
- 14:29Speaker 2: about some famous film star? Is it embarrassing to talk
- 14:33Speaker 2: about some scientific discovery? Why is it embarrassing to talk
- 14:37Speaker 2: about the creative the whole universe? And why are we
- 14:42Speaker 2: timid about talking to him? We have the privilege of
- 14:47Speaker 2: coming into his presence every day, into the Throne room,
- 14:51Speaker 2: and it will do more to help solve your problems
- 14:54Speaker 2: as a family, and yet we don't use that privilege.
- 14:58Speaker 3: Why it has Satan.
- 15:03Speaker 2: Somehow trapped us into thinking that crad doesn't count.
- 15:08Speaker 3: You know, a lot of people wait until their children
- 15:11Speaker 3: are grown are half drowned before they start trying to
- 15:13Speaker 3: teach them anything, and then it's too late.
- 15:19Speaker 2: Unless you have your child pretty well for the time
- 15:21Speaker 2: he's five or six, it's.
- 15:23Speaker 3: Almost too late.
- 15:26Speaker 2: The Bible says, here a little there, a little precept
- 15:29Speaker 2: upon precept, a little bit here, a little bit there.
- 15:32Speaker 2: You can't wait till he gets to be about twelve
- 15:34Speaker 2: or thirteen, and sudden they try to jam religion down
- 15:36Speaker 2: his throat.
- 15:37Speaker 3: It won't work.
- 15:40Speaker 2: You've got to start when they're small, and do it
- 15:42Speaker 2: a little bit over time. But you say, Billy, I've
- 15:44Speaker 2: already been such a failure as a perry.
- 15:47Speaker 3: Start now a.
- 15:49Speaker 2: Little bit now, ask God to forgive you.
- 15:51Speaker 3: In the past. Say oh God, I've been a failure.
- 15:54Speaker 3: You please help me and forgive me. He will. And
- 15:59Speaker 3: if you have.
- 15:59Speaker 2: Since in your heart about it, and you really make
- 16:02Speaker 2: a turn and a change tonight, I believe that God
- 16:05Speaker 2: will help you with those children, no matter what age
- 16:07Speaker 2: they are, you can start tonight. And then, fourthly, for
- 16:12Speaker 2: a successful marriage, there must be a dedicated father and
- 16:16Speaker 2: a husband, the scripture says, and the Lord said, for
- 16:21Speaker 2: I know Abraham that he will command his children and
- 16:24Speaker 2: his household after him, and they shall cheap the way
- 16:29Speaker 2: of the Lord.
- 16:30Speaker 3: Wouldn't it be wonderful if God could say that about me?
- 16:35Speaker 2: For I know Billy Graham that he will command his
- 16:38Speaker 2: children and his household after him, and they shall keep
- 16:43Speaker 2: the way of the Lord.
- 16:44Speaker 3: Wouldn't you like that to be said about you?
- 16:48Speaker 2: The Bible says Moses was faithful in all his house.
- 16:52Speaker 3: Now, sometimes that takes help from the wife.
- 16:54Speaker 2: One man looked very depressed as he came out of
- 16:57Speaker 2: his office after the first day with his new secretary,
- 17:01Speaker 2: and he was asked why, and he replied that he
- 17:04Speaker 2: had entrusted the hiring of a new secretary to his wife.
- 17:08Speaker 3: Very interesting, replied his friend. Is she a blonde of brunette?
- 17:13Speaker 3: She's falls snapped the man. But it takes a dedicated
- 17:24Speaker 3: husband and father for a successful home.
- 17:27Speaker 2: And the Bible holds the man accountable and responsible.
- 17:31Speaker 3: In our home.
- 17:32Speaker 2: My wife has had to be father and mother, and
- 17:37Speaker 2: she's done a magnificent job.
- 17:40Speaker 3: I give her credit tonight.
- 17:44Speaker 2: She's ridded them with a Bible in one hand and
- 17:46Speaker 2: a hickory stick in the other, and.
- 17:49Speaker 3: So far it's worked.
- 17:53Speaker 2: The Bible talks about people in the church, and it
- 17:55Speaker 2: says one that ruleth well his own house having his
- 17:58Speaker 2: children in subjection. You know, we're developing in this country
- 18:03Speaker 2: sort of a matriocal society.
- 18:05Speaker 3: In certain segments of our society.
- 18:08Speaker 2: Where the husband is failed, this is not the failure
- 18:10Speaker 2: of the The wife has to take over.
- 18:14Speaker 3: As almost in the case of.
- 18:15Speaker 2: My home, because I've traveled so much, I'm thankful for
- 18:19Speaker 2: a Christian wife who, in all humility has tried to
- 18:23Speaker 2: build a place of husband and father and wife and mother.
- 18:31Speaker 2: But it's a dangerous trend in a society when it
- 18:33Speaker 2: becomes a matriocal society. Because God is ordained that the
- 18:37Speaker 2: man shall be the head of the house, and a
- 18:40Speaker 2: man is to be the bread winner in the family.
- 18:43Speaker 2: This is a man's responsibility, and if the man is
- 18:46Speaker 2: not meeting that responsibility, God is going.
- 18:48Speaker 3: To hold him responsible. At the judgment.
- 18:53Speaker 2: You say, well, I haven't been the right kind of
- 18:55Speaker 2: a husband, and I haven't been the right kind of
- 18:57Speaker 2: a father. What am I going to do? Get on
- 18:59Speaker 2: your knees right now and ask God to forgive you,
- 19:02Speaker 2: and determine from this moment on that you're going to
- 19:05Speaker 2: live a new life. You're going to let Christ into
- 19:07Speaker 2: your heart. You're going to ask him to forgive your
- 19:09Speaker 2: sin and come into your life and make you the
- 19:12Speaker 2: right kind of a husband and the right kind of
- 19:14Speaker 2: a father. And then fifthly, to have a successful marriage,
- 19:22Speaker 2: there must be a devoted wife and mother. The Bible says,
- 19:27Speaker 2: let mothers first show piety at home, for that is
- 19:31Speaker 2: good and acceptable before God. The Bible says women should
- 19:36Speaker 2: guide the house and give none occasion to the adversary
- 19:39Speaker 2: to speak reproachfully. And you know, sometimes on a television interview,
- 19:45Speaker 2: we'll see a housewife that's being interviewed and they say,
- 19:48Speaker 2: what do you do? She says, well, I'm just a housewife,
- 19:53Speaker 2: sort of apologizing. I'm no star, I'm no glamour person.
- 19:57Speaker 2: I'm just an ordinary housewife. What I want to say
- 20:00Speaker 2: that to be a housewife and to be a mother
- 20:03Speaker 2: is the greatest calling in the world. Now you men
- 20:07Speaker 2: ought to applaud that because that is life. And then sixthly,
- 20:21Speaker 2: there must be disciplined children. The apostle Paul said that
- 20:25Speaker 2: one of the signs of the latter days will be
- 20:28Speaker 2: disobedient to parents, and we see today disobedient children. Absalom
- 20:37Speaker 2: was brought to the judgment of God in his later
- 20:40Speaker 2: life because he dissobated his father, and in the Bible,
- 20:44Speaker 2: in the Old Testament, children were severely punished for rebelling
- 20:49Speaker 2: against their parents. Now there's a strange teaching going on
- 20:54Speaker 2: today that children naturally rebel against their parents at all.
- 20:58Speaker 3: Children reach an age when they were against their parents.
- 21:01Speaker 3: Don't you believe it. I never really.
- 21:04Speaker 2: Felt rebellion against my parents in the sense we're talking
- 21:07Speaker 2: about today. My wife says she never felt any rebellion
- 21:12Speaker 2: against her parents, nothing but love and reverential fear of
- 21:16Speaker 2: her parents, according to the Bible. And I've talked to
- 21:19Speaker 2: hundreds of people asking them, did you rebel against your parents?
- 21:22Speaker 3: They said, no, I didn't have time. I was working
- 21:26Speaker 3: too hard.
- 21:28Speaker 2: And then sixthly, I determined destiny. Get your house in order,
- 21:35Speaker 2: the scripture says, is your own house in order? Have
- 21:40Speaker 2: you made a decision for Christ? The scripture says, choose
- 21:44Speaker 2: you this day whom you will serve. But it's for
- 21:46Speaker 2: me and my house. We will serve the Lord. Believe
- 21:49Speaker 2: on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved
- 21:52Speaker 2: and thy house tonight. You can receive Christ, fathers, husbands,
- 21:59Speaker 2: why lives, mothers, young people, children.
