Transcript
- 0:00Welcome to the Humanistic Leader Podcast. This is Dr.
- 0:04Craig Nathanson, and in today's short reflection, I want to invite you to slow
- 0:09down for a few moments and think more deeply about leadership,
- 0:12life, work, and what it means to remain human in a rapidly changing world.
- 0:19Today, I want to talk about attention, not time, attention.
- 0:24Increasingly, attention may be our most valuable human resource,
- 0:30You know, every day, thousands of things compete for it News alerts,
- 0:34emails, social media, algorithms, advertising, notifications And without realizing
- 0:40it, we can spend hours reacting to things we never intentionally chose to focus on,
- 0:46Remember that where your attention goes, life follows Attention shapes our experience,
- 0:52our relationships, our memories, our emotions, and ultimately who we become.
- 0:59Think about the things you remember most from your life. You remember what captured
- 1:03your attention, the people you loved, the places that mattered,
- 1:08the experiences that changed you.
- 1:11Attention is deeply connected to memory, and memory is deeply connected to identity.
- 1:18In last week's podcast, I discussed how I answered my son's phone call in the
- 1:23restaurant And I realized that at that time, that phone call deserved my attention in that moment,
- 1:30Sometimes, the greatest gift we can offer another human being is our undivided,
- 1:36attention Like that phone call Not advice, not solutions, not fixing, just attention.
- 1:44You know, when another person feels really heard, something powerful happens.
- 1:49They feel respected. They feel valued. They feel understood.
- 1:54Many people are surrounded by, you know, communication and yet starving for this connection.
- 2:01In many ways, attention is becoming the new currency of the modern world.
- 2:04Companies compete for it. Media platforms compete for it.
- 2:09Advertisers compete for it. Now AI systems compete for it.
- 2:14Attention, though, is limited. Every time we give attention to one thing,
- 2:18we choose not to give it to something else.
- 2:21The question is whether we are investing wisely. Are we investing attention
- 2:27in relationships, in learning, in reflection, in meaningful work?
- 2:34On a recent trip to Washington, D.C., I was at Dulles Airport.
- 2:38It's a very old, beautiful airport.
- 2:41And to go from one terminal to the other. There's like this old shuttle that
- 2:45you have to take. And my wife and I were on the shuttle and we were kind of
- 2:48jammed in with a bunch of people.
- 2:51And I accidentally bumped into this woman and I said, you know,
- 2:55I'm so sorry. She said, oh, no problem.
- 2:57And normally I would have left it at that. But for some reason,
- 3:00I asked her, how are you doing? Where are you going?
- 3:03And this led to a 20 minute conversation. She was on her way to her 60th high
- 3:09school reunion And she was excited But at the same time she said Well this might
- 3:14be my last I'm not sure if we'll get together again,
- 3:17Turns out she was from the city where I was born And we made this like Wonderful you know connection,
- 3:24In the past I wouldn't have paid Really attention to the person next to me.
- 3:29So are we investing attention in, you know, the people that we run into?
- 3:35You know, as artificial intelligence becomes more capable, one of the defining
- 3:39human strengths of the future may not be access to information because machines will have information.
- 3:45The defining strength may be wisdom, discernment, reflection,
- 3:51and the ability to determine what really matters.
- 3:54AI can help us process information, but human beings decide what information
- 4:00deserves our attention and what has meaning.
- 4:04Attention sets really at the doorway, as I think about it, between information and wisdom.
- 4:11Every day we're making conscious attention decisions.
- 4:16Some are conscious and, you know, many are unconscious. Each decision seems
- 4:21small, But over time, those decisions become our lives,
- 4:26One conversation One relationship One walk One quiet moment at a time The good
- 4:35news is that our attention can be reclaimed,
- 4:40The fact that you're choosing to listen to this podcast right now Shows your attention,
- 4:47Every time we listen deeply Every time we take a walk with, you know,
- 4:51distractions Every time we become fully present with another human being We
- 4:57reclaim a small piece of ourselves,
- 5:01So today I want to leave you with a simple question What has been receiving
- 5:07most of your attention lately?
- 5:10And does it deserve it?
- 5:14Because ultimately our lives become what we repeatedly pay attention to. Choose wisely.
- 5:21This is Dr. Craig Nathanson. Wherever you are on your journey,
- 5:26remember to be your own best friend,
- 5:29learn to lead yourself before leading others, and keep becoming more human in
- 5:35a rapidly changing world. Until next time.
