A Sitting President, an Alleged Forgery, and No Investigation (6/19/26) · The Epstein Chronicles

0:00
Speaker 1: What's up, everyone, and welcome to another episode of the
0:02
Epstein Chronicles. Ever since The Wall Street Journal reported that
0:08
Donald Trump sent a birthday greeting to Jeffrey Epstein, Donald
0:11
Trump has denied that that letter or note was ever
0:16
sent by him. And if that's true, then where did
0:19
this letter come from? And even more importantly, is somebody
0:24
trying to frame the president? In this episode, we're going
0:28
to talk a little bit more about the alleged birthday
0:31
note that Donald Trump sent to Jeffrey Epstein. When we're
0:35
talking about the birthday message, the central issue is not
0:38
merely whether that message attributed to Donald Trump is genuine,
0:42
but whether the administration's response is consistent with its claim
0:46
that the document was fabricated. The message appeared in a
0:49
birthday album reportedly assembled for Jeffrey Epstein's fiftieth birthday in
0:53
two thousand and three and later obtained from Epstein's estate
0:56
by congressional investigators. Trump has denied signing or drawing the
1:01
message and has repeatedly described it as fake. The White
1:05
House has likewise treated the document as another political and
1:08
media attack against the President. Yet calling the document fake
1:12
is not the same thing as demonstrating that it was forged.
1:16
A forgery of this magnitude would represent far more than
1:19
an inaccurate newspaper story or an embarrassing political prank. It
1:23
would mean that somebody manufactured evidence to connect a sitting
1:27
president to the most notorious sex trafficking scandal of the
1:30
modern era. Such conduct could potentially involve fraud, identity theft, obstruction,
1:36
false statements, evidence tampering, or a coordinated attempt to manipulate
1:41
Congress and the public. It would also create an urgent
1:45
national security and law enforcement question about who possessed Epstein's
1:49
records and who was altering them. The striking fact is
1:53
that the administration has generated far more noise about the
1:56
publication of the message than about identifying the person who
2:00
supposedly forged it. If the document is fraudulent, investigators should
2:04
begin with the most elementary question, where did it come from?
2:08
The reported chain of custody does not begin with an
2:11
anonymous social media account or an envelope mysteriously delivered to
2:15
a newsroom. The message was reportedly contained in a bound
2:19
album assembled decades ago and eventually produced by Epstein's estate.
2:24
That chain of custody does not automatically prove Trump authored
2:27
the message, but it makes the forgery theory considerably more complicated.
2:31
Someone would have needed to create the message, imitate or
2:35
reproduce Trump's signature, place it among authentic contributions, and ensure
2:39
that it remained undetected for years. Investigators would therefore need
2:43
to determine when the page was produced, when materials were used,
2:47
and whether it was physically incorporated into the original album.
2:51
They would also need to interview the people who collected
2:53
the birthday submissions, handled the book, stored Epstein's property, and
2:57
transferred the material to his estate. Handwriting specialists could compare
3:01
the signature with authenticated Trump's signatures from the same period,
3:05
rather than relying upon political spokespeople and television surrogates. Paper
3:11
ink printing methods, metadata, fingerprints, and an archival photograph might
3:16
further establish whether the page originated in two thousand and
3:19
three or was inserted later. None of those investigative measures
3:23
require speculation about Trump's guilt or innocence, because they are
3:27
precisely how a serious forgery allegation should be tested, and
3:32
that's why for me, the White House's failure to publicly
3:35
demand such an inquiry creates a glaring contradiction. In its position,
3:39
Trump's not alleging that a reporter merely misunderstood a conversation
3:43
or misquoted a confidential source. He is effectively alleging that
3:47
a physical document bearing his name was manufactured and inserted
3:52
into the historical record. Presidents have ordered or encouraged investigations
3:57
over matters carrying far less potential consequence than that. Trump's
4:01
administration has repeatedly portrayed hostile actions against him as conspiracies, hoaxes, weaponization,
4:08
or attempts to interfere with the presidency. In this instance, however,
4:13
the supposed conspiracy would come with an identifiable piece of evidence,
4:17
a chain of custody, a limited group of possible custodians,
4:21
and numerous forensic avenues for examination. This should make the
4:25
alleged defense unusually attractive to an administration that regularly promises
4:30
to expose wrongdoing against Trump. Instead, the principal response has
4:35
been political denunciation and civil litigation against the newspaper that
4:39
reported the document's existence. That choice attacks the messenger while
4:44
leaving the alleged fabricator untouched. It also permits the White
4:47
House to repeat the word fake without submitting the underlying claim.
4:51
To the discipline of an independent criminal investigation. The absence
4:56
of an aggressive forgery inquiry does not prove authenticity on
5:00
questionably weakens the administration's performance of certainty, and the lawsuit
5:05
against the Wall Street Journal must also be understood for
5:08
what it can and cannot establish. A defamation complaint is
5:11
not itself proof that the disputed reporting is false. Wealthy
5:15
and powerful people routinely file lawsuits to challenge damaging stories,
5:20
control public narratives, impose legal costs, obtain discovery, and discourage
5:25
further reporting. Trump's original complaint was dismissed after a federal
5:29
judge concluded that he had not plausibly alleged that the
5:32
journal published the report with actual malice. The dismissal did
5:36
not produce a judicial finding that Trump wrote the message,
5:40
but neither did the lawsuit vindicate his denial. Trump subsequently
5:44
filed an amended complaint, continuing a legal battle that keeps
5:47
attention focused on the newspaper's conduct rather than on a
5:51
forensic examination of the document. That distinction is critical because
5:56
defamation litigation asked whether the publisher acted with the legally
6:00
required degree of fault. It does not automatically resolve who
6:04
created the page, when it was created, or how it
6:07
entered Epstein's birthday album. The Journal's report also disclosed Trump's denial,
6:12
which makes it harder to betray the publication as in
6:15
an effort the hide his side of the dispute. Consequently,
6:19
the lawsuit may function more effectively as communications and a
6:23
pressure campaign than a mechanism for determining the document's authorship.
6:28
There is also a practical reason a political figure might
6:31
prefer litigation to a government forgery investigation. A lawsuit can
6:35
be shaped, delayed, amended, narrowed, appealed, publicized, or voluntarily abandoned,
6:40
according to the plaintiff's legal and political calculations. A legitimate
6:44
criminal investigation is far less controllable once agents begin collecting records,
6:49
interviewing witnesses, commissioning forensic tests, and documenting their findings. Such
6:54
an investigation could confirm the president's account, but could also
6:58
produce evidence contradict it. It might reveal that the page
7:02
is contemporaneous with the album, that the signature resembles authenticated examples,
7:08
or that witnesses remember soliciting or receiving Trump's contribution. It
7:13
could require testimony from people connected to Epstein, Maxwell Trump,
7:16
the estate, and the Birthday book project. It could also
7:19
expose additional communication or social interaction that neither of the
7:23
White House nor Trump's attorneys want examine publicly. By contrast,
7:28
a defamation lawsuit permits Trump to present himself as the
7:31
injured party while arguing over journalistic standards and legal pleading requirements.
7:37
That does not establish that the lawsuit was filed solely
7:40
to suppress her delayed disclosure, but it explains why litigation
7:44
may be politically safer than forensic scrutiny. The unanswered question
7:48
is why a president proclaiming total confidence in his innocence
7:52
would choose the less conclusive path. Trump's known social relationship
7:56
with Epstein gives a dispute additional context without pre authorship
8:00
of the message. The two men move within overlapping social
8:04
circles in New York and Palm Beach during the period
8:08
relevant to the Birthday album. Trump publicly praised Epstein in
8:11
two thousand and two, describing him as a longtime acquaintance
8:14
and commenting on his interest in women. Photographs and video
8:18
footage have also documented the men attending social events together.
8:22
None of that proves that Trump participated in Epstein's crimes
8:26
or composed a disputed birthday greeting. It does, however, make
8:30
the existence of a birthday contribution less inherently implausible than
8:34
the White House rhetoric suggests. A forged message normally requires
8:39
an explanation for why the forger selected a particular person, format, tone,
8:44
and historical setting. Here, the alleged author was someone who
8:48
undeniably knew Epstein and had publicly spoken warmly about him
8:52
near the time the album was created. The administration therefore
8:56
cannot dispose of the document merely by treating any association
9:00
between Trump and Epstein as an invented political narrative. The
9:04
historical relationship raises the evidentary stakes and makes independent authentication
9:10
more necessary, not less, The forgery theory also suffers from
9:14
an unresolved problem of motive. Who supposedly created the page
9:18
and what did that person expect to accomplish by placing
9:21
it in a private birthday album in two thousand and three.
9:25
If the document was forged at the time, the forger
9:28
would have needed to anticipate that Epstein would later become
9:31
internationally infamous and that Trump would later return to the
9:34
White House. If it was forged, more recently, the perpetrator
9:38
would have needed access to the album or the ability
9:40
to replace, insert, or reproduce a page without detection. Either
9:45
scenario should leave witnesses documentary traces, physical inconsistencies, or communications
9:51
that competent investigators could pursue. The White House is not
9:55
publicly supplied a coherent narrative identifying when the forgery occurred,
10:00
or who have the opportunity to commit it. Instead, the
10:03
accusation frequently operates as a conclusion that requires no mechanism, culprit,
10:08
or evidence beyond Trump's denial. Now, that may be sufficient
10:12
for partisan messaging, but it is inadequate as an investigative explanation.
10:18
A genuine claim of fabrication should become more detailed as
10:21
evidence is examined, not remain permanently suspended at the level
10:25
of accusation until the administration explains the alleged forgeries, origin
10:30
and mechanics. Fake remains a political assertion rather than a
10:35
demonstrated fact. It's therefore reasonable to consider whether Trump knows
10:38
the message is authentic and is using legal aggression to
10:42
create doubt, delayed consequence, or intimidate further publication. That remains
10:47
as an inference rather than an established fact, and I
10:50
think it's important to label it accordingly. Nevertheless, the inference
10:55
arises from a observable conduct rather than from fantasy. Trump
10:59
and I the message before the public had access to
11:02
the entire birthday album attack. The publisher filed an enormous
11:05
lawsuit and continued litigating after the original complaint was dismissed.
11:10
At the same time, his administration did not announce a
11:13
comparable effort to identify and prosecute the alleged forger. This
11:18
imbalance suggests that controlling the story may have received greater
11:21
priority than solving the supposed crime. Litigation also produces a
11:27
familiar political image in which Trump appears combative, persecuted, and
11:31
unwilling to retreat. Even an unsuccessful lawsuit can serve that
11:35
purpose by allowing his supporters to interpret adverse rulings as
11:39
proof of institutional hostility rather than weakness in the claim.
11:44
The longer the legal dispute continues, the easier it becomes
11:47
to tell the public that the matter remains unresolved and
11:50
should not be judged. That dynamic does not prove the
11:53
message is genuine, but it makes the lawsuit entirely compatible
11:57
with a strategy of delay and narrative matter. The administration's
12:02
credibility is further damaged by its selective approach to allegedly
12:06
fabricate Epstein material. When feral authorities have concluded that other
12:11
Epstein related writings were fraudulent, they have been capable of
12:14
announcing investigative findings and explaining why the material were considered fake.
12:19
That demonstrates that the government possesses both the expertise and
12:23
institutional machinery to examine question documents connected to Epstein. The
12:28
alleged Trump Birthday message should therefore be subjected to the
12:31
same transparent process. Agents could establish providence, laboratories could inspect
12:37
the physical page, and independent specialists could compare the handwriting
12:41
and signature. The results could then be released with appropriate documentation,
12:45
rather than filtered through political press statements. If the page
12:49
is fraudulent, such an investigation would provide Trump with far
12:52
stronger vindication than any social media denunciation or civil complaint.
12:58
If the administration refused, is that opportunity, the public is
13:02
entitled ask whether officials fear what a genuine examination might uncover.
13:07
The standard cannot be that Epstein documents are authentic when
13:11
politically useful and fake whenever they become inconvenient. A government
13:16
claiming to restore trust must apply consistent evidentiary rules even
13:20
when the president's reputation is at stake, and when you
13:24
chop it all up, the administration faces a simple credibility
13:28
test that no amount of partisan theater can erase. Either
13:31
the message is a forgery, in which case somebody committed
13:35
in an extraordinary act that warrants a full investigation, or
13:38
the message is authentic, in which case Trump's categorical denials
13:43
are false. There may be intermediate possibilities involving unauthorized assembly,
13:48
disputed authorship, or uncertainty about particular elements of the page.
13:53
Those possibilities also require evidence rather than slogans. What is
13:58
not persuasive is the current possible sure of declaring a
14:01
historic document fraudulent while displaying little a parent urgency about
14:04
discovering who forged it. The person falsely framing a sitting
14:09
president through Epstein's private records would represent a continuing threat
14:13
to the integrity of government, congress, journalism, and the justice system.
14:18
No responsible administration would treat such a perpetrator as less
14:21
important than the newspaper that reported the evidence Trump's decision
14:26
to pursue the journal while leaving the supposed architect of
14:29
the forgery unidentified, invites the conclusion that the litigation serves
14:34
as a strategic rather than truth seeking function. It's possible
14:39
that the president believes ordinary political combat will create enough
14:42
confusion that definitive authentication becomes unnecessary. Until Trump demands the
14:49
forensic investigation that his own accusation logically requires, suspicion will
14:54
remain that he is not trying to expose a forgery,
14:57
but trying to outrun a genuine document. All the information
